India lost six decades under Cong regime: PM

NEW DELHI, FEB 9

(AGENCIES): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched a fresh offensive against the Congress, this time in Rajya Sabha, amid heavy and constant sloganeering by the opposition parties demanding JPC probe against Adani group.

Replying to the Motion of Thanks on President’s address in Rajya Sabha, Modi accused the Congress of slowing India’s progress by resorting to tokenism in the name of development and wasting six decades of the country. “Congress never tried to solve India’s problems. Country is with us, people have rejected Congress party and punished them from time to time,” Modi said taking a dig at the grand old party’s decline.

Though PM’s speech in the Upper House was disrupted by constant sloganeering by the opposition parties, Modi, however, continued with his speech and highlighted the various development measures undertaken by the NDA government in the last 9 years.

With the opposition chanting “Modi-Adani bhai bhai”, Modi took a swipe at the protesting members saying their acts help the BJP flourish further.

The more “keechad” (dirt) you will fling, the bigger “kamal” (lotus) will bloom, PM said.

The Prime Minister alleged that the opposition is using half truths to create new narratives, spread falsehood. He said the opposition is against science, technology; they are not bothered about country,

but only about their politics.

“Attempts being made to show in bad light Indian scientists who produced indigenous vaccine in Covid times,” Modi said. He accused the Congress of pracitising appeasement politics, saying: “Congress party’s economic, social and political policies were based on vote bank politics.”

“True secularism is making sure that the benefits of different government schemes reach all eligible beneficiaries,” he said. Modi also slammed the Congress for questioning the renaming of old government schemes.

“Congress named schemes are Nehru-Gandhi family, but our government has named schemes after the achievers of India,” PM said.

“If Nehru was such a great person, why the family shies away from using ‘Nehru’ surname,” Modi said in a dig at the Gandhis.

With a united opposition sloganeering right through his speech, Modi tried to drive a wedge in their ranks by reminding the regional parties of how the Congress dismissed their governments in the past.

“Congress created problems for regional leaders of opposition parties,” Modi said and added “Congress govt

Indira Gandhi ‘misused’ Article 356 of Constitution 50 times to dismiss elected state governments, Modi said. He also targeted Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who had launched a scathing attack on the government over the Adani issue on Wednesday.

“Khargeji complains that I visit Kalaburagi too often. He should see the work done there. As many as 1.70 crore Jan Dhan bank accounts have been opened in Karnataka, including over 8 lakh in Kalaburagi,” Modi said

Modi said that Congress never tried to find solutions to the permanent problems faced by the people. “Mallikarjun Kharge said that Congress built a strong foundation in 60 years. In 2014, when I saw minute details, I saw that in 60 years, the Congress family has only built potholes on the path,” he said.

“Despite being in power from the Panchayat level to the Parliament they never, ‘thought or tried’ to bring solutions to permanent problems,” he said.

Modi then highlighted the achievements of NDA in the last six years and said “our government’s polices are focused on finding permanent solutions for issues facing country.”

Amid constant sloganeering by the opposition during his address, PM said that he is “proving too much for so many” and has been overpowering their voices during the course of his speech.

KOHIMA, FEB 9 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio said failure to come to a final settlement on the Naga political issue had led the State to face the Assembly ensuing election.

Kicking-off the election campaign for NDPP candidate from 10 Northern Angami-II Assembly constituency (AC) at Kohima village ground here on Thursday, he also admitted that the inability to resolve the Naga issue was a big stumbling block to development activities. And he attributed the failure to come to a settlement to the differences among people, noting that the negotiations following ceasefire had entered the 26th year now.

Rio said the proposed visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that could not materialised had also left numerous projects in a limbo.

However, he revealed that during his recent meeting with Union Home Min-

ister Amit Shah, the latter proposed that whatever project could not be completed would be taken up through Common Minimum Programme (CMP) of NDPPBJP alliance.

He mentioned that he would meet BJP leaders in order to chalk out all the projects that were yet to be completed or formulated.

Rio stated that one of the major projects was the medical college that required funds from the Centre. He disclosed that the academic session of the college would begin this year and hoped that the

State government’s request to upgrade the college into AIIMS-like regional institution would be met.

Rio said upkeep of the institution could be around Rs 15 crore to Rs 20 crore annually and therefore there was a need for the Central government to take care of the expenses.

In his speech, NDPP candidate Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome sought people’s support to work together with the government to bring development to the village. He said it was time to stop discussing about petty issues and focus on

the major ones that were hampering development. The programme was chaired by 10 Northern Angami-I AC president V Neiba Pienyü, while invocation was pronounced by Khonoma parish priest, the Rt. Rev Vizosieo Solomon Vizo.

8-Western Angami campaign: Starting the election campaign for NDPP candidate Salhoutuonuo Kruse from 8-Western Angami Assembly constituency (AC) at Khonoma, Rio remarked that Khonoma being a historic village, it was befitting to kick off the campaign from there. Rio asserted that the NDPP-BJP alliance would form the next government, but assured that if the Naga political issue got resolved, they would step down and pave way for a new arrangement. He further attributed the delay in solution to the division among Nagas and underground groups, that led to holding of the Assembly polls.

KOHIMA, FEB 9 (NPN):

In tune with deputy chief minister Y Patton’s claim that NDPP-BJP alliance would win not less than 45 seats, chief minister Neiphiu Rio too expressed confidence that the alliance would get absolute majority. Speaking to media persons on the sideline of an event at Khonoma on Thursday, he said though he could not give an accurate figure, he endorsed Patton’s assertion. It may be recalled that Patton had recently told Nagaland Post during a rally in Wokah that the alliance would win not less than 45 seats and form the next government.

To a query, Rio disclosed that he would be accompanying Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union ministers during their campaign in Nagaland as NDPP was an alliance partner.

Christians under attack in country: Cong

Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, FEB 9 (NPN):

All India Congress Committee (AICC) media coordinator Sujata Paul has alleged that Christians were under attack in the country due to BJP rule.

Addressing the media at Congress Bhavan here on Thursday, she pointed out the recent demand by RSSbacked Janajati Dharma Sanskriti Suraksha Manch (JDSSM) to delist tribals who have undergone a religious conversion from the Schedule Tribe (ST) status that entitles them for reservation in jobs. She said JDSSM was also demand-

ing that the Central government amend Article 342 (A) of the Constitution of India.

Paul further claimed that plans were afoot at the behest of BJP to take away special status granted to Nagaland, which had 95% tribal Christians, under Article 371 (A). She said com-

mittees had already been formed by BJP-ruled governments in Uttarakhand and Gujarat to implement Uniform Civil Code (UCC) at the earliest.

She questioned BJP how it would implement UCC in Nagaland, which was enjoying a special status under Article 371 (A).

Warning that the threat to Nagaland was real and looming large, Paul narrated how BJP crept into Jammu & Kashmir, formed a government with People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and then brought it down, before taking away the State’s special status.

with Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio including state BJP representativesdeputy chief minister Y. Patton, State BJP president Temjen Imna Along, BJP North East co-coordinator Rituraj Sinha, BJP national spokesperson and Nagaland in-charge Nalin Kohli. The sources said Himanta who has become the BJP’s trouble shooter in the North East and in particular for Nagaland, was sent by the BJP central high command to tackle the threat of likely fissure within the NDPP-BJP alliance.

According to the sources, the alliance has been under strain after the

recent ticket distribution when NDPP and BJP denied party tickets to several sitting MLAs and aspirants. This has led to several NDPP aspirants contesting as NCP candidates, while some NDPP and BJP ticket aspirants are contesting as Lok Janshakti Party (Ram

Vilas) candidates.

Sources claimed that those former NDPP legislators and some Rio loyalists who could not be given tickets have been accommodated in NCP and are contesting as party candidates.

On the other hand, several former NDPP legislators and BJP ticket aspirants have also been accommodated in the LJP (RV) and are contesting as party candidates.

Sources said the several candidates both former NDPP and others who are contesting as LJP (RV) candidates are being patronised by BJP to checkmate Rio.

Earthquake death toll in Turkey, Syria crosses 20,000 PVC bans setting up of mess, camps by political parties

ANTAKYA, FEB 9 (AP): Tens of thousands of people who lost their homes in a catastrophic earthquake huddled around campfires in the bitter cold and clamored for food and water

Thursday, three days after the temblor hit Turkey and Syria and killed more than 20,000.

Emergency crews used pick axes, shovels and jackhammers to dig through twisted metal and concrete-- and occasionally still pulled out survivors. But in some places, their focus shifted to demolishing unsteady buildings.

While stories of miraculous rescues briefly buoyed spirits, the grim reality of the hardship facing survivors cast a pall over devastated communities. The number

of deaths surpassed the toll of a 2011 earthquake off Fukushima, Japan, that triggered a tsunami, killing more than 18,400 people.

In northwest Syria, the first U.N. aid trucks to enter the rebel-controlled area from Turkey since the quake arrived, underscoring the

difficulty of getting help to people in the country riven by civil war. In the Turkish city of Antakya, dozens scrambled for aid in front of a truck distributing children’s coats and other supplies.

In the Turkish town of Elbistan, rescuers stood atop the rubble from a collapsed home and pulled out an elderly woman. Teams urged quiet in the hopes of hearing stifled pleas for help, and the Syrian paramedic group known as the White Helmets noted that “every second could mean saving a life.”

But more and more often, the teams pulled out dead bodies. In Antakya, over 100 bodies were awaiting identification in a makeshift morgue outside a hospital.

DIMAPUR, FEB 9 (NPN): Padam Pukhuri village council (PVC) has decided to ban setting up of mess or camp by any political party within the village jurisdiction.

PVC chairman Aheto Yeputhomi and secretary Yanpothung Yathan said that the decision was taken with the aim of creating clean and fair election and also to maintain peaceful atmosphere and tranquillity in the village.

The signatories said that the resolution was adopted at the village council meeting on January 24, 2023 resolved the following for the ensuing State Assembly election 2023. PVC also banned putting up posters and banners

within the village regardless of any political parties. The village council has cautioned that any GB or VCM found indulging in any form of electoral unfair means would be penalised.

It also resolved that on the polling day outsiders would not be allowed to enter village except polling related officials, observers, security personnel, medical emergency, candidates and agents with identity card. Further, PVC cautioned that any individual(s) found creating havoc or disturbing the peaceful atmosphere of the village during or on the day of polling would be “penalised sternly by the council.”

BJP promises greater autonomy to tribals in Tripura

AGARTALA,

FEB 9

(IANS): A week ahead of the Tripura assembly election, the ruling BJP on Thursday promised greater autonomy to tribals, increase in farmers’ financial assistance and setting up of rubber, bamboo and agarbased industries to make ‘Unnato Tripura, Sreshtho Tripura’.

The BJP said that if it returns to power after the February 16 assembly polls, it would establish the Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya Tribal University, provide cooked food three times a day at Rs 5 per meal under the PM Kisan -- increase the financial assistance from Rs 6,000 to Rs 8,000 per annum, double the per-family annual cap from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana and housing to all registered beneficiaries.

Releasing the party’s manifesto - ‘Sankalp Patra 2023’, BJP president J.P. Nadda also announced setting up a Regional Institute of Medical Sciences hospital in Agartala.

Saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised HIRA (Highway, I-way, Railway and Airway) to Tripura and in this direction, the state has developed a lot, he announced that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would take Tripura on the path of DTH - development, transformation and harmony.

The manifesto promised a Balika Somriddhi Scheme, a bond of Rs 50,000 to each family belonging to the financially weaker sections on the birth

of a girl and Mukhyamantri Konya Atmonirbhor Yojana to provide free scooty (two wheeler) to meritorious college-going female students.

The BJP also promised to provide two free LPG cylinders to all the beneficiaries under the PM Ujjwala Yojana, distribute land pattas to all eligible landless citizens, provide affordable housing to all registered beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin and Urban by 2025.

The ‘Sankalp Patra 2023’ promised to provide

Meghalaya Cong manifesto promises

Rs 3,000 a month to single BPL mothers

free rice and wheat to all eligible PDS beneficiaries every month and provide edible oil at a subsidised rate, four times a year through the Public Distribution Systems.

It also promised to restructure the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) to provide it with greater autonomy and additional legislative, executive, administrative, and financial powers, within the framework of the proposed 125th Constitution Amendment Bill.

The saffron party also promised, under the proposed Matsya Sahayak Yojana -- annual financial assistance of Rs 6,000 to all fishermen, provide access to tap water in all households under the Jal Jeevan Mission by 2024, invest an amount of Rs 500 crore to provide collateral-free loans of up to Rs 10 lakh to MSMEs and Entrepreneurs with a 100 per cent credit guarantee cover.

The party also assured to provide smartphones to around 50,000 meri -

torious college-going students under Mukhyamantri Yuva Yogayog Yojana, and launch the Tripura Road Maintenance and Upgradation Programme with an investment of Rs 1,000 crore to upgrade and modernise road infrastructure in the state over the next 5 years.

If the BJP comes to power in the ensuing elections, Rs 600 crore would be invested in the Tripura Unnata Gram Fund for further developing rural infrastructure, ensuring last-mile delivery of caste certificates by providing caste certificates within 15 days of submission of the application.

Establish Sachin Debbarman Performing Arts Academy to focus on popularising the state’s folk dance, music and theatre, expand the tourism economy of Tripura by investing Rs 1,000 crore and launch the Tripura Tourism Skill Mission to provide skill development training and employment to one lakh people, are the other promises made in the BJP election manifesto.

CPI(M) lashes out at BJP’s ‘Amrit kaal’, calls it ‘Jahar kaal’

AMARPUR (TRIPURA),

FEB 9 (PTI): The CPI(M) on Thursday lashed out at BJP’s slogan of ‘Amrit kaal’ (Golden age), and claimed that the right-wing party’s term in office should be described as ‘Jahar kaal’ (Poison age).

The Left party which is locked in a keenly contested battle in the northeastern state with the BJP, also alleged that its rival had launched an attack on the country’s constitution besides trying to use religion as a tool for political gain.

“Prime Minister Modi has said that his government has been giving free rations to the poor, but we find that the food subsidy in this year’s budget has been slashed by Rs 90,000 … This is not Amrit kaal, it is Jahar Kaal,” said CPI(M) politburo member Brinda Karat at a rally in Amarpur, 70 kms south from state capital Agartala.

Amarpur, a mixed populated subdivision of Gomati district, has three Assembly constituencies,

two of which - Birganj, Ampinagar - are set to witness triangular fights with all the three major political forces – Left-Congress alliance, Tipra Motha and BJP - contesting.

Interestingly, both BJP and its ally IPFT have fielded candidates in Ampinagar Assembly constituency, an ST-reserved seat.

“They are indulging in politics over religion. Their ideology of Hindutva has nothing to do with Hinduism as a religion. It is a political tool to divide our people for electoral gains,” the firebrand Communist leader said. She also claimed that the ruling BJP “has run a bulldozer over the constitution by destroying our constitutional institutions.”

The Left has long been alleging that BJP has been undermining institutions like the courts and media.

Alleging that the BJP has been destroying the democratic foundation of the country, she said the saffron party has been garnering crores of rupees by issuing anonymous electoral bonds. “The big industrial houses are pumping in huge money into the electoral bonds which are being used for election purposes,” she claimed.

Karat also said the Left parties have urged the Tipra Motha to fight alongside it in the election but the tribal party launched by a former member of the princely family which earlier ruled Tripura, did not respond.

“We told them to join hands with the Left Front which is fighting for the rights of indigenous people but they did not respond. The BJP will try to take advantage of division between them and the Left-Congress alliance in this election”, she added.

Meghalaya polls: BJP not against Christians, asserts party leader

Correspondent

TURA (MEGHALAYA),

FEB 9: “The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is not against Christians or any other religion, but is against corruption like a “true Christian should be,” Meghalaya BJP Vice President, Bernard N Marak said on Thursday.

Meghalaya Congress at a press conference.

SHILLONG, FEB 9 (PTI):

The Congress in Meghalaya on Thursday promised monthly assistance of Rs 3000 to single BPL mothers and a job each to every household if the party comes to power in the northeastern state in the February 27 election.

In the Congress’ manifesto, which was released here, the party also promised to provide an uninterrupted electricity supply to commercial and domestic users, and bring in a law which will make it mandatory for the government to upload all files related to development and infrastructure on portals.

“If the Congress forms the government, it will transfer Rs 3,000 per month to single BPL mothers raising their children alone. This will empower women giving them financial independence and helping them run their houses in a better way. This translates to Rs 36,000 a year which is a substantial amount,” state Congress president Vincent H Pala said.

Single mothers face plenty of problems. As a

large number of them have little or no education, it is difficult for them to get decent jobs in the state. The rate of child marriage and teenage pregnancy is also high in Meghalaya.

“Lack of decent employment opportunities in the state has fuelled the desperation amongst our youngsters and they are compelled to migrate to far-flung cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata to make both ends meet. Our second commitment is to provide one job to deserving candidates from every household in Meghalaya,” Pala said.

The Congress also asserted that the party would bring in a transparency law.

“The Congress government brought the Right to Information Act to empower common citizens but the (Narendra) Modi government at the Centre and the NPP regime in the state diluted the law step by step and ultimately left it inconsequential,” said Manish Chatrath, AICC General Secretary in charge of Meghalaya.

The new law would

mandate the government to upload all files related to development and infrastructure on portals six months after their closure, which will reduce corruption to a great extent and bring in more transparency in governance, he said.

Large-scale unemployment is leading to smuggling of drugs from across the border “worsening the law and order situation,” said Chatrath insisting that the Congress is committed to make Meghalaya a drug-free state.

Pala said the Congress’ commitment to an uninterrupted power supply will not only boost the state’s industrial growth but also ensure children’s all-round development.

The Congress lost power in Meghalaya to an NPPled coalition in 2018.

Marak’s statement is significant in the wake of the RSS-affiliate Janajati Dharma- Sanskriti Suraksha Manch (JDSSM) that has decided to intensify its agitation demanding to delist converted tribals from the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list that entitles them for reservation in jobs.

“Meghalaya is a Christian state and all our candidates are by and large Christians or pro Christians. Does it mean that any of these candidates are anti-Christian or less Christian? If BJP candi -

dates win elections, it is a boon to Christianity and BJP MLAs will always be at the frontline to protect, preserve and flag the issues of Christians before the Centre should the need arise,” Marak, who is contesting against chief minister and president of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), Conrad K Sangma for the South Tura assembly seat, said. He said BJP’s manifesto gives equal opportunities to all sections of the society, namely, cast, creed, religion, culture and tribes.

“It is under this foundation that the party has been able to reach out to every person, every voter, and every common man within the community,” the former militant leader-turned politician explained.

Noting that the programmes and objectives of the BJP government in Delhi are designed to cater

to all the citizens of the country, the state, urban and rural irrespective of their caste, creed or community, the party leader said, “the BJP government has been able to attain success in all fronts and with all programmes, especially for the welfare of the poor and the backward communities. With this background, there is no scope to deviate from its goal and objective which has been enlisted in the manifesto and the whole approach is to ensure development reaches out to all.”

Rubbishing the allegation that BJP is anti-Christian, Marak said, “there is no substance to allege the BJP on this ground. One example can be illustrated, where we have a BJP-run government in Nagaland, a state dominated by Christians. There is no confrontation to be seen or experienced by the people of Nagaland when the government is a BJP-run one. It shows that the party does not interfere with the lifestyles, culture, which includes food habits of the people of Nagaland.”

Marak, who was arrested on charges of human trafficking and was subsequently released on bail, justified that the Government of India has extended lots of projects through the Ministry of Minority Affairs to strengthen local infrastructure and traditional establishments in the state.

Meghalaya, BJP is a coalition partner in the MDA (Meghalaya Democratic Alliance) government. It is the BJP which has helped the state receive various projects from the Centre. These projects and schemes have been distributed fairly without any bias,” Marak maintained.

“Never have beneficiaries been asked about their religion while receiving benefits from schemes. Moreover, we have all experienced that while we are part of the government the party has worked handin-hand with the local and traditional institutions, all faith organizations to strengthen the needs whenever there is a need to do so. There is nothing to show on record whether in public domain, media or church congregations where they had expressed reservations about BJP,” he underscored.

NEW DELHI, FEB 9 (PTI): Over 69,000 cases are pending in the Supreme Court while there is a backlog of over 59 lakh cases in the country’s 25 high courts, Rajya Sabha was informed on Thursday. Citing details available on the SC website, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said in a written reply that 69,511 cases were pending in the top court as on February 1.

Tiwari contended before the bench that a separate petition has been filed on the issue, which is listed for hearing on February 10, and requested to hear his petition along with that petition.

Tiwari’s plea sought directions to set up a special committee to supervise the sanction policy for loans of over Rs 500 crore given to big companies.

The other PIL filed by advocate M.L. Sharma contended that the US resident Nate Anderson of Hindenburg Research and his Indian entities “hatched a criminal conspiracy, did short sale in hundreds of billion dollars prior and

Bombay Court rejects request seeking action against Vice Prez, Law Minister

lous, a waste of the court’s time and nothing but a publicity stunt. Exemplary cost should be imposed,” he said.

“We are not against debate and criticism but it should be held in Parliament and not in such public domain. This is lowering the judiciary’s reputation and image and affecting the faith people have in judiciary,” Abdi said.

MUMBAI, FEB 9 (PTI):

The Bombay High Court on Thursday dismissed a public interest litigation filed against Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar for their remarks on judiciary and the collegium system for the appointment of judges,.

The plea filed by Bombay Lawyers Association had claimed Mr Rijiju and Jagdeep Dhankhar showed lack of faith in the Constitution with their remarks and conduct. It had sought for orders to restrain Dhankhar from discharging duty as the vice president, and Rijiju from discharging duty as cabinet minister for the central government.

The PIL claimed the “frontal attack not just on the judiciary but the Constitution” by the two executive officials has lowered the prestige of the Supreme

Court in public. A division bench of Acting Chief Justice S V Gangapurwala and Justice Sandeep Marne briefly heard the petitioner’s lawyer, Ahmed Abdi, and Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Anil Singh for the respondents.

“We are not inclined to grant any relief. The petition is dismissed. Reasons would be recorded later,” the court said. While Abdi argued that Dhankhar and Rijiju had lowered the reputation of the judiciary with their remarks, ASG Singh said the plea was frivolous and a publicity stunt.

Singh said the respondents (Dhankhar and Rijiju) respect the Constitution of India which is the supreme and there was no question of them attacking the Constitution.

“The petition is frivo-

This was a very dangerous trend that would ultimately lead to anarchy, he claimed.

“Respondent 1 (Dhankhar) and Respondent 2 (Rijiju) as constitutional functionaries are supposed to have faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India,” the PIL had said.

“The Vice President and the Law Minister are attacking the collegium system as well as the doctrine of basic structure openly in a public platform. This kind of unbecoming behaviour by respondents who are holding constitutional posts is lowering the majesty of the Supreme Court in the eyes of the public at large,” claimed the petition, filed through advocate Eknath Dhokale.

Rijiju recently said the collegium system of appointing judges was “opaque and not transparent”.

Sharma’s plea further added, “They secured billions of profits by butchering citizens of India. However, SEBI did not suspend trading in the stock specially qua to the Adani group of the companies and allowed short sellers to exploit innocent investors.”

The plea said, “Issue writ of mandamus to the respondents to conduct inquiry to prosecute & register F.I.R. u/s 420 & 120-B of IPC r.w. HOWRAH, FEB 9 (PTI):

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday expressed concern over the plight of people’s deposits in banks, post offices and the LIC, claiming that the existence of such institutions might be at stake in future.

Banerjee’s comments come in the wake of the Hindenburg Research report that made a slew of allegations of wrongdoing against the business conglomerate led by industrialist Gautam Adani, in which stateowned lender SBI and Life Insurance Corporation have exposure.

“Some day, they will say wind up LIC, banks and post offices; so where will the people go?” she said, in an indirect reference to the BJP-led central government.

Banerjee was speaking at a programme at Panchla

here for laying the foundation of various projects, and extending government services to people.

The general public make investments in life insurance and bank deposits, which are provided as loans to various business houses, the CM claimed.

She reiterated that the Centre has not released funds for the 100-day job guarantee scheme to West Bengal. “We are yet to get Rs 7,000 crore for the Mahatma Gandhi National

Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS),” Banerjee said.

Raising concern over proper utilisation of funds granted in the past, the BJPled NDA government has withheld money for various welfare schemes in the state.

“I urge the central government not to deprive poor people and provide the dues,” she said. The chief minister also claimed that her government has created 10 lakh workdays and made payments form the the state’s funds.

“Funds for 11 lakh houses (under Prime Minister Awas Yojana) are also pending,” Banerjee said.

The Trinamool Congress supremo said though the state government bears 40 per cent share of the funds meant for the scheme, the Centre claims bulk of the credit.

HP Excise inspect Adani Group warehouse

HIMACHAL, FEB

9 (PTI): The Himachal Pradesh Excise and Taxation Department inspected an Adani Group company, scrutinising records and checking the stock at the Adani Wilmar warehouse in Parwanoo, officials said on Thursday.

The department was apparently investigating possible Goods and Services Tax violations by the company, a 50:50 joint venture between the Adani conglomerate and Singaporebased Wilmar.

The inspection on Wednesday evening in the Congress-ru n state comes when the group finds itself in the middle of a political row at the Centre, triggered by a scathing report by US-based Hindenburg Research.

But a Himachal Pradesh excise department official told PTI that it was a “routine” exercise, a point also made by an Adani Wilmar statement later.

Adani Wilmar sells cooking oil and other food products like rice, wheat flour, sugar, besan and soya chunks under the Fortune brand. In Himachal Pradesh, it is a major source of these products for the Civil Supplies and police departments.

A state excise department official said the company’s entire GST input was

NEW DELHI, FEB 9

(PTI): Amid an ongoing tiff between the Executive and the Judiciary over the procedure to appoint judges, the government has asked the Supreme Court Collegium to reconsider 10 proposals reiterated by it, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju told Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

Out of these 10 proposals, the SC Collegium has reiterated its earlier recommendation for appointment in three cases. On the remaining seven reiterated proposals, the collegium has sought additional inputs from the high court collegium, he said in a written reply to a question.

“Ten proposals reiterated by SCC (Supreme Court Collegium) were recently referred back to the

SCC for reconsideration,” he said.

In view of various reports and input received by the government, which in its opinion warrant further consideration by the Collegium, the Centre has sent such reiterated cases for reconsideration as was done in the past as well, Rijiju explained. “There have been instances in the past when the SC Collegium had agreed to the views expressed by the government and recalled its reiterated recommendations,” he said.

According to existing Memorandum of Procedure on appointment of high court judges, the proposal is initiated by the chief justice of the high court in consultation with two senior most judges of that high court.

land is retrieved.

“A massive anti-encroachment drive in all tehsils of the district is on and over 2,86,875 kanals and 14 marlas (35,859 acres) encroached state land has been retrieved so far,” he said.

The state land retrieved from the illegal occupants includes 7,671 kanals and 5 marlas of kacharai

adjusted through tax credit but no payment was made in cash. But, in its statement, Adani Wilmar cited the Goods and Services Tax rules and claimed “the company is not required to pay tax liability in cash”. An excise official said the Adani Wilmar recorded a turnover of about Rs 350 crore during the last three years. It disclosed a GST liability of about Rs 20 crore and claimed refunds amounting to a little under Rs 2 crore for that period,

land and 2,79,204 kanals and 9 marlas of state land, including the Roshni Land, Kundal said.

As per the eviction plan and on the directions of the deputy commissioner, a series of anti-encroachment drives have been conducted across the district in the past one month, the officials said.

according to the official.

During the inspection no variation was found between the physical stock and the stock according to the records maintained by the company, the official said.

Another Adani company, which produces cement, has been facing a tough time in Himachal Pradesh.

Two cement plants, in Solan and Bilaspur districts, remain closed since December 14 following a dispute with truckers over freight rates.

CIHSR ANNOUNCES

The new government in the state has intervened, trying to break the stalemate.

The Adani Wilmar statement claimed that officials who visited the warehouse did not find any irregularities. All operations by the company are in full compliance with the relevant laws and regulations, it said.

It said depot operations are functioning normally after the inspection.

“This was a routine inspection carried out by the relevant authorities and there was no raid as previously stated or reported in the media,” it said.

The staff extended their support during the inspection, fully cooperating with officials and local authorities, the company spokesperson said.

Adani Group stocks took a severe beating after Hindenburg Research accused it of share price manipulation and other irregularities last month. The conglomerate has dismissed the allegations as lies.

Parliament has been repeatedly disrupted over the row, with the Opposition questioning the rise of the Adani Group over the past decade and demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the allegations in the Hindenburg report.

Restart to economy

Despite having had a head start with a people’s mandated government and also the exclusive constitutional guarantee under Article 371 A, Nagaland as the second oldest state after Assam in the region, is today still trying to find a foothold in the fast changing socio-economic environment. It may be reminded that Nagaland officially became the 16th state under the Indian union on December 1,1963. Other states such as - like Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura -came into existence only ten years later but today they are a decade ahead of Nagaland by surpassing it in many development fields. Though development in Nagaland had undergone changes during the past five decades or so, yet it has not been able to go beyond putting in place some infrastructures. Several factors have combined to create an impediment which has slowed down progress to a grinding halt. Development concept comes to the fore and various concepts have been adopted to propel progress in a world driven by human resource and information and technology revolution. The challenges for change also comes with increase in population, improved education and growth of consumerism. Nagaland has been a recipient of massive central funds since the late sixties till the early 90s when development was progressing quite well. However, the rising challenges posed on socio-economic development from corruption and extortion took a heavy toll on development of infrastructures such as good road connectivity, uninterrupted power, water and health services began to take their toll. Nagaland has made some meaningful progress during the seventies to eighties when, despite grave threats to peace owing to ‘unsolved’ and ‘unresolved’ political issue; there was a period of peace and progress due to a committed bureaucracy and the public’s intense desire to move forward along with the rest of the country. In the mid-90s, the pace suffered as the system began to give in to various pulls and pressures and all of which resulted in loss of purpose and inadequacy in matters of management . After having tried its best to promote trade and industry, the state suffered on account of poor governance which forced progress into a grinding halt as evidenced by the fate of government corporations such as the paper mill, sugar mill, veneer mill and similar ventures of the state government. There are lessons to be learnt from these experiences. The failures have accentuated the problem of growing unemployment, an issue that threatens to multiply. Unemployment is not in the fifty or sixty thousand registered as educated unemployed or a much greater number of unregistered drop outs. The problem is also not only the inadequate economic foundation, where no viable industry exists or the fact that most of the unemployed lack basic skills which render them unemployable. If employment is about job then it goes no farther than saying that it is all about making the literate qualify for salaries as babus and babunis and that this is what development is all about and like mistaking the wood for trees. What affects the economy is when the socio-economic environment, like climate is vitiated and this calls for creation of a pro-growth climate and removal of weeds of extortion, lawless elements, corrupt system. Somehow and quite disturbingly, the current social syndrome seem to suggest that people have to pass through a few more decades before the refiner’s fire brings out the best.

Are You Exhausted Spiritually?

The everlasting God…neither faints nor is weary. —Isaiah 40:28

Exhaustion means that our vital energies are completely worn out and spent. Spiritual exhaustion is never the result of sin, but of service. Whether or not you experience exhaustion will depend on where you get your supplies. Jesus said to Peter, “Feed My sheep,” but He gave him nothing with which to feed them (John 21:17). The process of being made broken bread and poured-out wine means that you have to be the nourishment for other people’s souls until they learn to feed on God. They must drain you completely— to the very last drop. But be careful to replenish your supply, or you will quickly be utterly exhausted. Until others learn to draw on the life of the Lord Jesus directly, they will have to draw on His life through you. You must literally be their source of supply, until they learn to take their nourishment from God. We owe it to God to be our best for His lambs and sheep, as well as for Him.

Have you delivered yourself over to exhaustion because of the way you have been serving God? If so, then renew and rekindle your desires and affections. Examine your reasons for service. Is your source based on your own understanding or is it grounded on the redemption of Jesus Christ? Continually look back to the foundation of your love and affection and remember where your Source of power lies. You have no right to complain, “O Lord, I am so exhausted.” He saved and sanctified you to exhaust you. Be exhausted for God, but remember that He is your supply. “All my springs are in you” (Psalm 87:7).

India’s security lies in strong nationalism

India’s national security has been weakened because an ill-conceived narrative has been built by elements in the political opposition, that the country was ruled by a ‘Hindu’ government, not a BJP government - denying the fact of the BJP has come to power through an established electoral process. Also, notwithstanding the principle of ‘one man one vote’, they projected a legitimate rule by the majority as a movement towards ‘majoritarianism’.

Ignoring the constitutional test that all citizens continued to have the same opportunities and protection of the law, the narrative further alleged that the minorities in the country - principally the largest one of Muslims - had been put in jeopardy by the present regime.

The concept that India represents ‘unity in diversity’ is being misinterpreted to claim that beyond ‘freedom of worship’ there was also freedom for ‘communities’ and ‘regions’ not to consider themselves as a part of the common nationhood denoted by democratic India.

In some or the other form, the subversive idea

that India was a land of multiple ‘sub-nationalities’ is being still propagated.

Ranging from a deliberate dilution of the declaration by our Constitution that India was a Union of states and disregard of the express mention of the word ‘Nation’ in the Preamble, to the political stand of sections of the Opposition that in vital matters like saluting the national flag or standing up during the singing of the national anthem, minorities should be allowed an option, there is a constant denial of national unity of India. Diversity of customs, social practices and festivities is being presented as proof that India could never have a shared culture of national pride, common recognition of India’s friends and adversaries and a feeling of joint participation in the national effort for economic advancement and defence consolidation. The anti-India narrative is backed by a set of historians who marshalled ‘evidence’ to emphasise that India was never a nation in the past - forgetting that what is important is to build India of the present, into a strong nation for the benefit of all its citizens.

The internal security and stability of India are clearly threatened by external forces operating in collusion with elements inside, to whip up the issue of ill-treatment of the Muslim minority in India under the present regime and thus create a situation where communal militancy could be exploited for fomenting faith-based terrorism. They are doing this even though the average Muslim knew that schemes for the poor would benefit the community as well and realised that any case of public violence by extremist elements had to be blamed on the law & order failure of the concerned state administration - not on the Modi government at the Centre.

The majority-minority divide is being escalated out of political motives with the opposition making the calculation that since Hindus were in any case splintered because of caste, region and ideology, the consolidation of Muslim votes behind it would be electorally rewarding.

Those indulging in ‘Minority politics’ carry distorted notions of what would ‘please’ the Muslim minority - like question -

ing the authenticity of the ‘surgical strike’ against Pakistan, alleging that the Modi government was pushing India towards becoming a ‘Hindu Rashtra’ even though they knew that the Constitution did not permit any denominational stamp being carried by the elected political executive and projecting CAA as a move against Indian Muslims whereas it was specifically meant only to accommodate non-Muslim subjects of ‘Islamic’ states around India facing violent suppression there.

All this propaganda could encourage Indian Muslims to identify themselves with Islamic regimes elsewhere and subscribe to the idea of Ummahwhich is a notion being promoted once again by Pakistan in its National Security Policy. Pakistan has declared India as its principal adversary and reaffirmed Pakistan’s right to ‘protect’ the interests of India’s Muslim minority.

For reasons of electoral gains, political lobbies in India aided by anti-India forces outside are even questioning the security strategy of the Modi government of having no talks with Pakistan until that

country gave up the use of cross-border terrorism as an instrument of its state policy. India has to handle the serious situation that was being created by those players in our domestic politics who would not place national security above politics.

As India proceeds with comprehensive measures during its chairmanship of G20, to establish its place as a world power and put it in the lead of the Global South in general and South Asia in particular, certain international lobbies are also stepping up their campaign to show that India was a highly divided nation lacking in internal cohesion. They are even deprecating the democratic content of the Indian state. This has to be effectively countered with the help of Think 20, Women 20 and Civil 20 and through further activation of diplomacy and outreach.

Pakistan, backed by China, is raking up the issue of Kashmir and repeating the call for resumption of talks between India and Pakistan- with Shehbaj

4 out of 5 glaciers may be lost by 2100: Study

Over 80 per cent, or 4 out of every 5 glaciers by number, could well disappear by the end of this century, if fossil fuel use continues unabated, according to a study.

The findings showed that the world could lose as much as 41 percent of its total glacier mass this century - or as little as 26 percent - depending on today’s climate change mitigation efforts.

Assistant Professor David Rounce of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University, US, led an international effort to produce new projections of glacier mass loss through the century under different emissions scenarios, according to the study.

The projections were aggregated into global temperature

change scenarios to support adaptation and mitigation discussions, such as those at the United Nations Conference of Parties (COP 27), held in Egypt, the study said.

Even in a best-case, lowemissions scenario, where the increase in global mean temperature is limited to +1.5 degrees Celsius relative to pre-industrial levels, over 25 per cent of glacial mass will be gone and nearly 50 per cent of glaciers by number are projected to disappear, the study said.

A majority of these lost glaciers are small (less than one sq km) by glacial standards, but their loss can negatively impact local hydrology, tourism, glacier hazards, and cultural values, the study said. Rounce’s work provided better context for regional glacier modelling, and he hoped it will

spur climate policymakers to lower temperature change goals beyond the 2.7 degree Celsius mark that pledges from COP-26, held in Glasgow, UK are projected to hit.

Smaller glacial regions like Central Europe and Western Canada and the US will be disproportionately affected by temperatures rising more than 2 degrees Celsius C. At a 3 degrees Celsius rise, glaciers in these regions almost disappear completely, the study said. Rounce noted that the way in which glaciers respond to changes in climate takes a long time.

He described the glaciers as extremely slow-moving rivers.

Cutting emissions today will not remove previously emitted greenhouse gasses, nor can it instantly halt the inertia they contribute to climate change, meaning

3 money rules women should follow in 2023

We as women need to acknowledge that having economic independence requires great financial planning, good research, time management, risk tolerance, and wise investments. We need to understand that there are differences between how men and women use, feel, and speak about money and as an empowered woman, you must know your money and know how to manage your financial independence.

Your financial health is dictated by the ability to follow habits, change your mindset around money and stick with your goals and money-related decisions in the short, medium, and long run.

Here are 3 sexy brilliant money tips outlined by Devina Kaur, author of Too Fat Too Loud Too Ambitious, you should think about adding in 2023 to step up your game, regain control of your finances and feel more comfortable with how much you’re saving, spending and investing.

Make money your new best friend: Talking about money is not easy but the more we remove the shame and stigma around taboo conversations the more power we have. Money is a topic that impacts almost every aspect of our lives in some way. It’s too important to ignore and sweep under the rug. Have those uncomfortable conversations with your friends, family, and colleagues just like you discuss

sports, politics, and travel. Know that you deserve to be friends with money as it is only an energy exchange tool. So empower yourself, and get comfortable with knowing that you deserve to live an abundant, gracious, and full life. Financial empowerment could include different things for different women. For some it could include asking your boss for a yearly raise, for others, it could mean negotiating the interest rate on your loan. Understand your level of risk tolerance, ask for help, and use those skills that you learned in college to make money with your new best friend.

Know your money: To know your money, you need to know yourself. You need to know about your financial personality. There are 3 most common types of personalities:

Spenders: Love to have the latest and greatest of everything.

Savers: Savers are the exact opposite of spenders, they are mindful of how much things cost.

Shoppers: Much like spenders, shoppers can’t resist spending money.

Once you know which type you belong to, you can modify your money habits and you can start spending money more wisely. Spending wisely means understanding your everyday routine with short, mid, and long-term goals. Be aware of the source of your income and keep tabs on where you are using your money

and how. Getting used to an accounting system to track your spending habits early on in life is always a good idea.

Planning: Start planning your monthly budget. Divide your financial goals into the short, medium, and long term. Short-term goals could include taking a trip with your friends or getting married. Mediumterm goals could include buying a home or a new vehicle. Long-term goals could include retiring by the age of 50. You are never too young or too wise to think about your future and how soon you can gain financial freedom. Study the market, know your investment style, and start investing money toward your future as soon as you receive your first paycheck. This could include a direct deposit into your retirement savings account. Do your research, learn, and watch from other successful people in your social circle. Speak to trusted mentors and professionals who can guide you toward better financial health and independence.

To think and plan around money can be a very heavy and stressful topic. It is very important to not judge yourself or others for any spending, investing, and saving habits. Always be realistic and honest with yourself, having a financial cushion or emergency fund might give you some assurance and comfort during those stressful moments. IANSlife

not want another war with India, and desperately trying to earn some weightage with the US.

Unsurprisingly, Shehbaz Sharif kept silent on cross-border terrorism against India and advanced the familiar plea that Pakistan was itself a ‘victim’ of terror- possibly referring to the doings of TTP but clearly covering up for Pak ISI’s known collusion with Taliban, Al Qaeda and ISIS. The forums of G20 under India’s Presidency should find a way of getting the participating countries to condemn ‘extremism and radicalisation’ and while highlighting the importance of inter-faith harmony, persuade global Islamic organisations and their Indian counterparts to clearly reiterate that there was no place for Jehad for solving any disputes in today’s world. The role of Think 20 and Civil 20 in particular is going to be extremely important in this- they must receive guidance from the NSCS functioning under the National Security Advisor. D.C. even a complete halt to emissions would still take between 30 and 100 years to be reflected in glacier mass loss rates, the study said.

Many processes govern how glaciers lose mass and Rounce’s study advances how models account for different types of glaciers, including tidewater and debris-covered glaciers, the study said.

Tidewater glaciers refer to glaciers that terminate in the ocean, which causes them to lose a lot of mass at this interface. Debris-covered glaciers refer to glaciers that are covered by sand, rocks, and boulders.

Prior work by Rounce has shown that the thickness and distribution of debris cover can have a positive or negative effect on glacial melt rates across an

entire region, depending on the debris thickness.

In his newest work, he found that accounting for these processes had relatively little impact on the global glacier projections, but substantial differences in mass loss were found when analyzing individual glaciers.

The model is also calibrated with an unprecedented amount of data, including individual mass change observations for every glacier, which provide a more complete and detailed picture of glacier mass change, the study said. The use of supercomputers was essential to support the application of state-of-the-art calibration methods and the large ensembles of different emissions scenarios, the study said.

Serious fallout of dirty hands in election

In the past, surgeons used to do surgery without using hand gloves. In most cases, the operations were successful, but mortality rate was always high. Doctors were baffled for a long time. When finally a doctor claimed and argued that the high mortality was due to operating with dirty hands, he was ridiculed by the medical fraternity. They said that surgeries were always done after washing of hands with utmost hygienic care.

However, later on, it was found that infection from hands was the main reason for high mortality.

Since then, doctors started using hand gloves and, lo and behold, the mortality rate went down drastically.

This analogy is comparable to our election practice. During election, we use alcohol, money, women, gun, proxy, and all other evils, imaginable and unimaginable. The goal is to win by hook or by crook. Our hands are stained with dirt beyond recognition without any shame.

Thus nothing good comes forth after election, and this vicious cycle continues unabated for almost six decades.

No wonder Nagaland has hit rock bottom and

lags far behind all Northeastern states. The remedy for dirty election is simply, FREE & FAIR CLEAN ELECTION with purity of conscience and action. Those who advocate clean election may be ridiculed by wise fools. But unless election practice is made clean, the future is bleak and common people will continue to suffer. Clean election is doable. Only wise fools say that it is impossible – for where there’s a will there’s a way!

Electing leaders with integrity

As election season draws near, it is essential that we take a step back and evaluate what is truly essential. We have observed the impact of elections on communities and relationships, causing division and hostility even between the families and relatives. This year, unfortunately, we are still witnessing instances of violence between parties during elections, which is completely unacceptable. No one is going to win a prize for fighting on behalf of someone else. Individuals who engage in violence and conflicts during elections will have to live with the consequences of their actions long after the election is over. This should not be the outcome of elections. It is crucial that we remember that elections are a time to select leaders who will serve the public with honesty and integrity. These leaders must possess a vision for a better future and work tirelessly to make it a reality. Regrettably, many leaders focus only on their personal gain, disregarding the well-being of the people. As we cast our votes, we must examine the

actions of our leaders, not just their promises. Have they made a significant impact in their communities in the past? Have they taken steps to improve the lives of those they aspire to serve? If they truly care about their constituents, they should have addressed their needs and made a positive impact before seeking election. Leadership is not about throwing large amounts of money to purchase votes during elections. It is about serving the people and making a difference in their lives. Genuine leaders will have spent time in their communities, listened to their needs, and worked to support them. Let us choose leaders who genuinely desire to serve and make a difference. Leaders who have demonstrated their commitment to their communities and have a plan for the future. These leaders must have a stake in the success of the community they hope to serve. Let us make our votes count and select leaders who will lead with integrity, purpose, and a genuine commitment to the people.

(PTI): National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Thursday held extensive bilateral talks with his Russian counterpart Nikolai Patrushev in Moscow focusing on issues relating to bilateral cooperation and regional and international developments.

In a late night statement, the Ministry External Affairs (MEA) said that Doval also called on Russian President Vladimir Putin and agreed to continue work towards implementing the India-Russia special and privileged strategic partnership.

It said that the NSA also met Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov and discussed issues pertaining to bilateral defence and economic cooperation.

The MEA said Doval participated in the fifth multilateral meeting of secretaries of security councils/National Security Advisers on Afghanistan on Wednesday.

“NSA Ajit Doval also called on the President of the Russian Federation

NEW DELHI , FEB 9

NEW DELHI, FEB 9 (PTI): President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday said the mindset that bringing up children and managing home are the responsibility of women only has to change while noting that in spite of their increased participation they fail to make the cut above a certain level owing to family responsibilities.

Inaugurating a national convention on ‘Women as Foundation of Valuebased Society’ and launching an all India awareness campaign ‘Empowering the Family’ at the Om Shanti Retreat Centre of Brahmakumaris at Gurugram, she

Vladimir Putin and had wide-ranging discussions on bilateral and regional issues,” the MEA said.

“It was agreed to continue work towards implementing the India-Russia special and privileged strategic partnership,” it added.

The MEA further said: “On February 9, NSA Ajit Doval held a bilateral dialogue with Secretary of the Russian Security Council, Nikolai Patrushev, and discussed issues, including bilateral relations, regional and international developments.”

In his remarks at the

security dialogue on Afghanistan, Doval stressed the need to ensure that the territory of Afghanistan does not become a source of radicalization and terrorism, regionally or globally, it said.

He also underlined the need to intensify intelligence and security cooperation to deal with terror outfits, including those designated under the UN Security Council resolution 1267.

“He also pointed out that the well-being and humanitarian needs of the Afghan people is India’s foremost priority,” the

“These countries will create this under the pretext of countering international terrorism, but they are not doing anything that is really necessary in the real counterterrorism struggle,” he said.

“Obviously, the situation in the country is not improving and we see this. The humanitarian situation is worsening,” Putin added.

Besides Russia and India, the meeting was attended by representatives from Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

On Monday, Russian Ambassador to New Delhi Denis Alipov said that Russia wants to further diver-

India to host tourism activities under SCO presidency

The NSA’s visit to Russia came three months after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar travelled to the country during which the two sides vowed to expand their economic engagement including India’s import of petroleum products from its “timetested” partner. Doval’s visit to Moscow also took place ahead of the G-20 foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is expected to travel to India to attend the meeting on March 1 and 2. The ties between India and Russia remained strong notwithstanding Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. India’s import of Russian crude oil has gone up significantly in the last few months despite increasing disquiet over it in many Western countries. India has not yet condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine and it has been maintaining that the crisis must be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue.

(IANS): Amid declining Covid cases in the country, the Center on Thursday relaxed the travel norms for passengers from China and other six countries. However, the random testing of 2 per cent travelers coming to India will continue.

Updating the ‘Guidelines for International Arrivals’, the Health Ministry has dropped the existing requirements of pre-departure Covid-19 testing and uploading of Self-Health Declaration for international travellers coming from/via China, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Thailand, and Japan.

In a letter to the Civil Aviation Ministry, the Health Ministry has said: “As has been witnessed in the last 4 weeks, these countries are witnessing a sustained and significant decline in trajectory of Covid-19 cases.

“Meanwhile, India has continued to witness a declining trajectory, with less than 100 new cases/ day are being reported. In view of the above, this

Ministry is updating its ‘Guidelines for International Arrivals’, and dropping the existing requirements of pre-departure Covid-19 testing and uploading of Self-Health Declaration on Ministry of Civil Aviation’s ‘Air Suvidha’ portal applicable for international travellers coming from/via China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Republic of Korea, Thailand and Japan,” it said in the letter.

Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan has said in the letter, “In order to monitor infections due to mutated variants of SARSCoV-2 among international travellers to India, the present exercise of random testing of 2 per cent travellers to India (irrespective of country of origin) upon arrival India shall continue.”

It has been observed that in the middle level management of the private sector, there has been a decrease in women participation above a certain level,” a statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan said.

said women have played a very important role in shaping values and ethics in Indian society.

Lauding the Brahmakumaris organisation for reviving Indian values by keeping women at the centre, Murmu said this is the world’s largest spiritual institution run by women and more than 46,000 sisters of this organisation are carrying forward the tradition of spirituality and Indian culture in about 140 countries.

She said when women get equal opportunities, they perform on par with men and sometimes better than them in every field.

Protest against recruitment exam paper leaks turns violent

DEHRADUN, FEB 9 (PTI): A protest by youths against recruitment examination paper leaks in Uttarakhand turned violent when the protestors clashed with police personnel and hurled stones at them here on Thursday.

The police resorted to a lathicharge to disperse the protestors. Some youths were injured in police action.

The clash between the protesters and the police caused a long traffic jam from Clock Tower to Rajpur Road.

Unemployed youths had staged a dharna here on Wednesday demanding a CBI probe into alleged irregularities in different recruitment examinations held by the Uttarakhand Public Service Commission.

Reacting to the police lathicharge on protesting youths, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said they

were subjected to brutality for raising their genuine demands.

“The BJP government’s corruption in Uttarakhand is ruining the lives of youths. They were brutally lathicharged when they were staging a demonstration with their genuine demands against paper leak of recruitment examinations,” Gandhi said in a statement.

The youths were angry as police had allegedly forced them to lift their dharna on Wednesday. The Uttarakhand Congress too reacted sharply to the “coercive manner in which the voice of youths was being silenced” by the state government.

The party will hold demonstrations in every district on Friday in protest against the atrocity against the youths, PCC vice president Mathura Dutt Joshi said.

The president attributed family responsibilities as the main reason for the phenomenon behind women not able to participate above a certain level in the private sector. “Generally working women have to shoulder the responsibility of home too along with the office. We need to change the mindset that bringing up children and managing home are the responsibility of women only,” she said. Murmu said women should get more support from the family so that they can reach the highest position in their career without any hindrance. She said that families would be empowered only by the empowerment of women and empowered families would make an empowered society and empowered nation.

NEW DELHI, FEB 9 (PTI): A number of tourism-related activities will be held in India in the next few months under the country’s presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), officials said on Thursday.

Uzbekistan, in September last year, had handed over the rotating presidency of the eight-member SCO to India in the historic city of Samarkand.

As part of the tourism track activities under India’s chairship, the Ministry of Tourism has planned various activities such as SCO Tourism Mart during SATTE (South Asia’s Travel and Tourism Exchange) from February 9-11, they said.

An SCO Expert Level Tourism Working Group Meeting and SCO Tourism Minister’s Meeting in Varanasi will be held from March 13-17 and SCO Food Festival in Mumbai from April 13-19, they said.

India has conceptualised an SCO Tourism Mart along with SATTE to promote the SCO brand of tourism.

(IANS): Opposition members, cutting across party lines, in the Lok Sabha on Thursday expressed their disappointment that the Union Budget for 2023-24 has failed to provide adequate funds for significant components like education, health, and agriculture, with some terming it “antipeople” and “anti-poor”.

Participating in the discussion on the budget, Trinamool Congress member Sougata Roy criticised the budget, saying that it had no roadmap for tackling unemployment, inflation and inequality, and also described it as antipoor and anti-people.

NCP’s Supriya Sule said that topics such as unemployment, recession, poverty, inflation, growth versus inflation and imbalances in import and export were not touched upon in the budget.

BJD’s Bhartruhari

Mahtab observed that though the revised estimate of 2022-23 for the PM-KISAN scheme was reduced to Rs 60,000 crore, but in 2021-22, an external

Sougata Roy

expenditure of Rs 68,825 crore, was incurred on it.

“The figure is there for all of us to see (of reduced allocation). Should we believe that people have moved from farming to some other avenues for better? Or, should we believe that they have been pauperised and have become daily wage earners?” he asked.

Referring to MGNREGA, Mahtab said that “this generated an all-time

high of 389 crore person days of employment in 2021-22, and 363 crore person days in 2020-21. Even this fiscal’s projection of 290 to 300 person days will exceed the 265 crore plus generated in 2019-20 and 2018-19. It is a demanddriven scheme. Whenever we make this point, it is always said that ‘it is a demand-driven scheme.’

But here, the figure shows how it has met. The budgeted amount this year is Rs 60,000 crore. The question is how realistic is the assessment? If the next SouthWest monsoon is normal, and the non-farm economy recovers timely, the MGNREGA may not require any additional funding. Till then, do we have to keep our fingers crossed?”

NEW DELHI, FEB 9

(IANS): During a virtual meeting with IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday said that debt discussions will be at the forefront during the forthcoming meeting of the G20 Finance Ministers Central Bank Governors (FMCBGs) slated to be held in Bengaluru later this month. India will continue to support the ongoing efforts for orderly and timely implementation of the common framework, the Minister said during the meeting.

Along with addressing debt vulnerabilities, Sitharaman and Georgieva also discussed the role of IMF and other relevant international

LIC’s net income jumps to Rs 8,334.2 cr in Q3

MUMBAI, FEB 9 (PTI): Public sector insurer LIC on Thursday reported manifold jump in net income at Rs 8,334.2 crore during the three months ended December 2022 as against Rs 235 crore a year ago. The Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) earned Rs 1,11,787.6 crore in net premium income during the reporting quarter as against Rs 97,620.34 crore in the year-ago period, it said in a regulatory filing. The numbers are strictly not comparable as the insurer was not a publicly traded company earlier.

LIC’s income from investments rose to Rs 84,889 crore from Rs 76,574.24 crore a year ago, the filing said. Its investments into the crisis-ridden Adani Group has been under tremendous criticism even though the value of the investment of close to Rs 36,000 crore are still in the green despite those shares losing almost 60 per cent of their value since January 25.

During the post-earnings call, LIC Chairman M R Kumar said that after provisioning for transferring Rs 2,000 crore from the surplus to the shareholders fund, the net income is Rs 6,334.2 crore.

thanked the IMF for the support that it had been providing to the G20 Indian Presidency on various work streams under the G20 Finance Track. Both the leaders also expressed solidarity with those affected by the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. Sitharaman conveyed India’s immediate support to the natural disaster through deployment of NDRF and medical teams under Operation Dost. Georgieva deeply appreciated India’s contribution of $50 million for South Asia Regional Training and Technical Assistance Centre (SARTTAC), which is a partnership between IMF and India.

She feared that Nagaland would face the same fate since BJP was riding piggyback on NDPP and formed the government. She claimed that the party wanted to weaken and wipe out NDPP by forming alliance with other parties.

She also accused Rio of having ties with Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma whom she alleged was attacking tribals and Christians. She pointed out that this was the true face of BJP-NDPP combine.

She declared that Congress would fight against such forces till the end and appealed to people of Nagaland to open their eyes and realise that this time they should vote for her party because it was the only secular party that always stood for people of Nagaland and every community.

She also questioned why Rio and Sarma did

not speak to Central leaders and urge them to take action against JDSSM.

Paul further accused BJP-RSS and their affiliated organisations of attacking churches and minority community members and cited several incidents of alleged BJP attacks on Christians like in Meghalaya on October 6, 2019, Legal Rights Observatory (LRO), a legal rights body affiliated with RSS, urging Union Housing & Urban Affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri not to allot land to Presbyterians to build a church in New Delhi, LRO launching a massive campaign against Christianity in Meghalaya on October 3, 2021 and attack on a prayer house at Roorkee, Uttarakhand, where a mob of about 250 people, including members of BJP, Bajrang Dal and Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), ransacked the prayer house.

Elon Musk-run Twitter is also offering a discounted annual plan of Rs 6,800 per year in India, which translates to approximately Rs 566.67 per month. With India launch, Twitter Blue is now available in 15 global markets including the US, Canada, Japan, the UK and Saudi Arabia.

Earlier this month, the micro-blogging platform Twitter expanded its Blue service subscription service to six more countries.

In December last year, Twitter relaunched its Blue subscription service with verification, costing $8 for Android users and $11 for iPhone owners per month globally.

Twitter has now begun allowing Blue subscribers in the US to create long tweets of up to 4,000 characters. Twitter Blue subscribers will also see 50 per cent fewer ads in their home timeline.

With Blue checkmarks, Twitter Blue features offer subscribers a way to enhance and customise their Twitter experience which include custom app icons, custom navigation, top articles, undo tweet, longer video upload and more. NEW DELHI, FEB 9 (IANS): If international gas prices come down, the government could give relief to consumers on cooking gas through subsidy, the Parliament was told on Thursday.

Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri said in Lok Sabha during Question Hour on Thursday that the government imports 60 per cent of the total domestic requirement of gas.

“There is a (existing) subsidy of Rs 200. What is this subsidy? It is tax payer’s money... The ones who are most vulnerable, we are always ready to help if it is left to this House and the honourable Prime Minister. It would be ideal if the international or the Saudi Contract Price could further come down from $750.

It would enable domestic LPG to be sold at even more economical rates,” he said.

“The import price is linked to what is called the Saudi Contract Price.

“The interesting thing is that the Saudi Contract Price during the last two years or so - if we have to use this as a reference period - has gone up from $250 per metric tonne to something like $900 per metric tonne. Today also, I think

it is around $751 per metric tonne,” Puri added, while replying to a starred question on providing greater subsidy to people on cooking gas.

Despite rising international gas prices, the minister said the government is sensitive to the requirements of the consuming population.

“We did not allow the cost of domestic LPG to increase. Saudi Contract Price went up by 333 per cent and yet the price increased was very small for the domestic LPG,” Puri said in his response.

Even during the pandemic, when the poor were suffering due to the lockdown, the government gave three cylinders free of cost to them, he told the House.

Failure in negotiations led to Assembly polls: Rio

(From p-1)

However, with the political groups coming together and issuing statement, he said solution seemed to be getting closer and everyone was feeling positive about that.

He said development was hindered in the State and talented people deprived from the opportunity to realise their potential due to Naga political issue.

Meanwhile, narrating the sequence of allotting two tickets to women candidates, Rio claimed that NDPP believed in giving equal opportunities to everyone, gender equality and women empowerment.

He also emphasised on women empowerment and gender equality.

Citing the example of Rano Shaiza, the first Naga woman to represent the State in Lok Sabha in 1977 from Khonoma village, he expressed joy to see Salhoutuonuo from Khonoma standing on behalf of the people.

He commented that history would be created if women members got

elected to Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA), adding that “this is just the beginning.”

He asserted that electing women as legislators would herald a major change in policy and decision-making process.

Stating that NDPP had allotted ticket to Salhoutuonuo with the hope that people of 8-Western Angami AC would elect her, he pointed out that it was every individual’s responsibility to elect an able leader.

On Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation’s (ENPO) demand for Frontier Nagaland, Rio admitted that the demand had started in November 2010 and that the State cabinet held meetings and constituted a fact-finding committee headed by chief secretary which found that the organisation’s claims of poor infrastructure and lack of development were true.

Empathising with ENPO’s grievances, he pointed out that the State government had recommended an autonomous council in

2011 and had even written a letter to the Central government in this regard.

He claimed that the organisation had decided to participate in the election process after conclusion of talks, though he refused to divulge the contents due to the Model Code of Conduct and assured that the State government would do whatever possible to ameliorate the eastern region. He admitted that injustice was done because of the previous census and hoped that with delimitation, justice would be delivered by increasing the number of Assembly constituencies to 80 and parliamentary seats (3 Lok Sabha seats, one each for Eastern Nagaland area, Central Nagaland and Tenyimia area).

Alleging that the Central government did not sanction funds for maintaining roads, while the State did not have resources, Rio assured that more ways and means would be explored to generate revenue when the next govern-

ment was formed.

He informed that during the last cabinet meeting, it was decided to give priority to roads by setting aside Rs 50 crore for road maintenance.

For developments to take place, he advocated a cordial relation with the Centre and proper allocation of State funds.

Further, Rio pointed out that oil exploration could not be carried out in the State due to Naga political issue and though it was done once, it had to be put on halt since 1994. He remarked that if Nagas had to wait for freedom, they would end up with nothing and therefore called for taking up the issue on priority.

Referring to NDPP’s manifesto of focusing on merit and transparency, he assured that all appointments would be made through proper channel

He clarified that Nagaland Staff Selection Board’s (NSBB) exam result could not be declared because of elections, but claimed that it was conducted in a transparent manner. He pointed out that people who wanted jobs had to strive hard and not depend on backdoor appointments. He noted that if anything went wrong, the matter would be taken to court and everything would come to a halt.

In her address, Salhoutuonuo shared her vision for youth, women empowerment, equal infrastructure development and representation of both urban and rural areas, skill development and employment, improvement in quality of life of the people through good governance, peace and security and creating a model constituency.

Zelenskyy asks EU for more weapons

BRUSSELS, FEB 9 (AP): Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelenskyy on Thursday addressed the European Parliament as he seeks more military aid, saying Ukraine and the European Union are fighting together against Russia — in his words “the most anti-European force” in the world.

Zelenskyy received standing ovations before, during and after his speech to European lawmakers. He held up an EU flag after his address and the entire legislature stood in sombre silence as the Ukrainian national anthem and then European anthem “Ode to Joy” were played.

“Europe will always be, and remain Europe as long as we are together and as long as we take care of our Europe, as we take care of the European way of life,” he said.

Zelenskyy added that Russia wants to destroy the European way of life, but “we will not allow that.”

Before Zelenskyy spoke, European Parliament President Roberta

Metsola said allies should consider “quickly, as a next step, providing long range systems” and fighter jets to Ukraine. Metsola said the response to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine “must be proportional to the threat, and the threat is existential.” Zelenskyy’s highprofile pursuit of more Western military aid came as evidence mounted that Russia’s anticipated offensive around the anniversary of the invasion is starting to take shape.

The Kremlin’s forces “have regained the initiative in Ukraine and have begun their next major

offensive” in the eastern Luhansk region, most of which is occupied by Russia, the Institute for the Study of War, said in its latest assessment.

“Russian forces are gradually beginning an offensive, but its success is not inherent or predetermined,” the US-based think tank said.

Zelenskyy is wrapping up a whirlwind tour of his major European backers, already heading home with heaps of goodwill, promises of more military aid and, as hardware goes, France’s highest medal of honour.

at the European Union’s legislature in Brussels on Thursday. The Ukrainian anthem was played at the protocol entrance, followed by the European anthem.

The bloc’s 27 leaders were hoping to impress on the president that the powerful bloc is steadfast in its support of embattled Ukraine as Russia is feared to be making moves for a new offensive around the February 24 one-year anniversary of the war.

Flying in from Paris with President Emmanuel Macron, who honoured him with the Grand Cross of France’s Legion of Honor, Zelenskyy will be stepping up from a half-dozen video addresses to the EU leaders over the past year to use his impressive aura and oratory skills in person to make sure that nothing stalls in Europe’s unwavering backing.

“The European Union will stand by Ukraine with steadfast support for as long as it takes,” said the latest draft of the summit conclusions seen by The Associated Press.

Earthquake stuns Syria’s Aleppo even after war’s horrors

BEIRUT, FEB 9 (AP): For years, the people of Aleppo bore the brunt of bombardment and fighting when their city, once Syria’s largest and most cosmopolitan, was among the civil war’s fiercest battle zones. Even that didn’t prepare them for the new devastation and terror wreaked by this week’s earthquake.

The natural disaster piled on many humanmade ones, multiplying the suffering in Aleppo and Syria more broadly.

Fighting largely halted in Aleppo in 2016, but only a small number of the numerous damaged and destroyed buildings had been rebuilt. The population has also more recently struggled with Syria’s economic downslide, which has sent food prices soaring and residents thrown into poverty. The shock of the quake is all too much.

Hovig Shehrian said that during the worst of the war in Aleppo, in 2014, he and his parents fled their

Beijing calls US claims over balloons ‘information warfare’

BEIJING, FEB 9 (AP): China on Thursday said US accusations that a downed Chinese balloon was part of an extensive surveillance programme amount to “information warfare against China.”

The Pentagon on Wednesday said the Chinese balloon shot down off the South Carolina coast Saturday was part of a programme involving a number of such airships that China has been operating for “several years.”

At Thursday’s daily briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning re -

peated China’s insistence that the large unmanned balloon was a civilian meteorological airship that had accidentally blown off course and that the US had “overreacted” by shooting it down.

“It is irresponsible,” Mao said at a daily briefing. The latest accusations “may be part of the US side’s information warfare against China.”

US officials have dismissed China’s claims and agents from the FBI and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service are cataloguing debris recovered from the ocean and transporting it for

MOSCOW, FEB 9 (AP): Russia-US relations are in a state of “unprecedented crisis” without any sign of improvement, a senior Russian diplomat said Thursday.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov argued that the White House’s emphasis on increasing weapons supplies to Ukraine to ensure Russia’s defeat leaves no room for diplomacy.

“I don’t see any prospect for a productive political and diplomatic process,” Ryabkov said at a briefing. “We have a very deep and unprecedented crisis in Russia-US relations. The Biden administration has driven them into a deadlock.”

Ryabkov warned that the US and its allies must carefully assess the risks stemming from supplying increasingly powerful Western weapons to Ukraine.

“The Americans need to thoroughly and deeply weigh the risks linked to their unabashedly cavalier course,” he said.

Ryabkov noted that Moscow doesn’t trust Western statements about selfimposed restrictions on a

range of weapons supplied to Ukraine in order to avoid escalation, adding that such assurances in the past have served as cover for a steady expansion of the assortment of arms deliveries.

“We don’t see any sign of reason in any of the NATO and EU members’ capitals,” Ryabkov said. “What they are doing isn’t going to strengthen their security.”

He rejected the US argument that Russia’s refusal to allow the resumption of inspections of its nuclear facilities represents a breach of the New START treaty, the last remaining nuclear arms control pact between the two countries.

The New START treaty, signed in 2010 by President Barack Obama and

Kim Jong Un’s daughter appears at military parade; sparks succession talk

SEOUL, FEB 9 (AGENCIES): North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attended a grand night time parade organised by the country’s military, where it showcased its largest number of intercontinental ballistic missiles. ABC News reported that the parade was held at Kim Il-Sung Square, in central Pyongyang, with over 30,000 soldiers participating. But the centre of attention was Kim’s daughter, which ABC News said is nine-year-old Kim Ju Ae, reports world news. The girl has been spotted in several important military related events since November last year, raising speculations

that she may be the future of Pyongyang’s leadership.

“Kim Jong Un seems to be taking advantage of the international attention from the public whenever he brings his daughter to military photo ops,” Professor Park Won-gon of Ewha Womans University, told

ABC News. “She also has a symbolic significance as the next generation, as Kim Jong Un has been referring to its ICBM Hwasong-17 as a source of well-being and happiness of the next generation.”

Ju Ae even inspected a guard of honour alongside her father. The photos were also beamed live by state television during the broadcast of the military parade. For years, North Korean state media never mentioned Kim’s children, although Seoul’s spy agency has said he has three with his wife. They are believed to be aged around 13, 10 and six.

further processing. When similar balloons passed over US territory on four occasions during the Trump and Biden administrations, the US did not immediately identify them as Chinese surveillance balloons, said Brig Gen

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, limits each country to no more than 1,550 deployed nuclear warheads and 700 deployed missiles and bombers. The agreement envisages sweeping on-site inspections to verify compliance.

Just days before the treaty was due to expire in February 2021, Russia and the United States agreed to extend it for another five years.

Russia and the US have suspended mutual inspections under New START since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, but Moscow last fall refused to allow their resumption, raising uncertainty about the pact’s future. The US State Department last week said that Russia’s refusal to allow the inspections “prevents the United States from exercising important rights under the treaty and threatens the viability of US-Russian nuclear arms control.” It noted that nothing prevents Russian inspectors from conducting inspections of the US facilities.

Pat Ryder, the Pentagon press secretary. But he said “subsequent intelligence analysis” allowed the US to confirm they were part of a Chinese spying effort and learn “a lot more” about the programme.

“I can assure you this was not for civilian purposes ... We are 100 per cent clear about that,” Ryder said.

Top administration officials were briefing members of Congress on the Chinese balloon surveillance program in classified sessions on Wednesday and Thursday.

COLOMBO, FEB 9 (PTI): President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Thursday said Sri Lanka was in the final stages of negotiations with the IMF on the muchawaited USD 2.9 billion bailout package that could help the debt-trapped island nation recover from the unprecedented economic crisis. Wickremesinghe also said that his government was having “direct discussions” with Beijing to restructure the country’s debts with China. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) in September last year approved Sri Lanka the USD 2.9 billion bailout package for over 4 years pending the island nation’s ability to restructure its debt with creditors -- both bilateral and sovereign bond holders.

By the end of June 2022, Sri Lanka owed nearly USD 40 billion to bilateral, multilateral and commercial loans, according to the figures released by the Sri Lankan Treasury. With assurances from creditors, the USD 2.9 billion facility could get the IMF board approval in March, officials said.

More than 360 people were killed in the city and hundreds of others were injured. Workers were still digging three days later through the rubble, looking for the dead and the survivors. Across southern Turkey and northern Syria, more than 11,000 were killed.

The brutal battle that

Director Siddharth

in the boulevard around the Burj Khalifa which no Hollywood film has been able to do this.”

“To shoot this sequence in Dubai, it just looked impossible. But the Dubai police and the authorities made it happen for us.”

He adds, “My friends, who live at the Boulevard, came and told me that they got circulars saying on this day between this time, you will not be able to access the boulevard so please plan

that’s for my film!”

Siddharth further states, “I said I can’t believe it and this wouldn’t have been possible if they had not agreed to our vision and supported us wholeheartedly. So

I want to thank the Dubai police and the authorities in Dubai.”

Slideshow: 8 digestive health supplements

Probiotics: Friendly Bacteria

Probiotics contain living organisms -- mainly bacteria and one type of yeast. These resemble good bacteria in the gut that help with digestion. The supplements are used to treat certain GI problems and for general digestive health. Some types of probiotics may provide relief from diarrhea and may also relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Consider adding them to malted milk or yogurt.

DGL (Licorice): Cooling Heartburn

Licorice has long been used to treat symptoms of indigestion like heartburn and acid reflux. These uses aren’t backed by scientific evidence, though. In its unpurified form, licorice can also have side effects, including contributing to high blood pressure in some people. DGL is a specific extract of licorice with a certain chemical removed, and it doesn’t seem to have as many side effects. Still, pregnant women should not take DGL -- or any other supplement -- without consulting their doctor.

Peppermint Oil: To Ease IBS

While the jury’s still out, several studies suggest that peppermint oil may lessen pain and bloating that comes with IBS. Enteric-coated capsules of it don’t dissolve in the stomach. They pass through to the small and large intestines, where the oil is released. In small doses, peppermint oil appears to be safe.

Chamomile: More Than a Soothing Tea

Chamomile is widely used for multiple ailments. Naturalists have tried chamomile in an effort to treat digestive problems such as upset stomach, colic, and nausea, as well as anxiety and insomnia. People with some plant allergies like ragweed, though, could possibly have an allergic reaction to chamomile. Always discuss your use of any supplement with your doctor.

Ginger: Comfort for the Stomach

Asian medicine uses ginger to treat stomachaches. In the West, ginger is used to relieve nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Ginger is available as a powder, in capsules or tablets, or as freshly cut root. It’s generally considered safe when taken in small doses -- 1 to 2

grams per day.

L-Glutamine: The Intestinal

Helper

Glutamine is found naturally in your body; it supports the intestines and other organs. Some experts believe that the supplement L-glutamine may help relieve diarrhea induced by surgery, infections, or stress. It may help some people better absorb nutrients. That includes people with too much unfriendly bacteria in their digestive tracts, people who are taking cancer drugs, and people who’ve had part of their intestines removed. But more research is needed.

Psyllium: Fiber for Constipation

Psyllium is used as an ingredient in bulk laxatives. Because of its high fiber content, it’s able to absorb water in the intestines. That makes the stool bulky and easier to pass. It’s important when treating constipation to drink plenty of fluids. This helps you avoid dehydration or a worse case of constipation. People allergic to English plantain pollen, grass pollen, or melon could have a serious allergic reaction when taking psyllium.

Artichoke: Relief of Stomach

Upset

Artichoke leaf extract may relieve symptoms of indigestion. When used daily, the extract seems to lessen nausea, vomiting, gas, and abdominal pain. It also might help treat IBS and reduce cramps and abdominal pain. The extract has no known interactions with drugs. But it can cause allergic reactions in people who are allergic to ragweed and related pollens.

Check With Your Doctor First

Dietary supplements are not strictly regulated by the FDA. That means there is no guarantee of their quality, effectiveness, or safety. It’s important to always read the labels. It’s also important to talk with your doctor before starting any new supplement. That’s especially true if you’re pregnant, have an existing medical condition, or are taking other drugs, herbs, or supplements.

Dwayne Johnson went to “great lengths” to make sure Adele was “authentically surprised” at the Grammy Awards.

The actor stunned the singer, who has expressed multiple times how much of a fan she is of the former wrestler, during host Trevor Noah’s opening monologue at Sunday’s, February 5, when he appeared from behind her to give her a hug, and he insisted the 34-year-old singer’s shock was genuine, reports aceshowbiz.com.

He told Variety, “We wanted to do something special for Adele. I know that she is a very big fan of mine and has made that clear publicly many times. But I’ve got to tell you, I am a huge fan of hers, as wellher music, her journey, her openness and directness in how she speaks.”

“I’ve always admired that about her. We were trying to figure out something to do that was going to be fun and surprise her, and we had kicked around ideas all week. The key to a surprise like that is to actually keep it a surprise.”

He added: “Myself and the Grammys went to great lengths to make sure that Adele was authentically surprised in the moment, and she was. It was just a great surprise and I was able to chat with her a

little bit and her boyfriend, Rich Paul.”

Later in the show, the ‘Jungle Cruise’ actor presented the Best Solo Pop Performance award, and he was delighted when he read that the gong was going to Adele for ‘Easy on Me’. He said, “And talk about the universe meeting our friendship halfway: I get up onstage and I open that Grammy envelope and it said ‘Adele.’ So that’s why I was able to say, ‘Get up here best friend, Adele!’”

Although this week was the first time the pair had met, it’s unlikely to be the last because they had so much fun together. Johnson said, “It was such a special night. And she’s such a special iconic brilliant inspiring artist who has inspired a generation and who will continue to inspire generations to come. I love that woman. We had a really great time... I think probably the best part about it is she’s just cool - and I had never met her before.” (IANS)

1st Test, Day 1: India bowl out Aus for 177;77/1 in reply

NAGPUR, FEB 9 (IANS): Skipper Rohit Sharma struck a breezy half-century as India reached 77/1 at stumps against Australia on the first day of the first Test of the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series after bowling out the visitors for 177 on an engrossing day of cricket at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, here on Thursday.

Rohit batted aggressively and raced to his fifty off 66 deliveries as he and K.L Rahul raised 76 runs for the opening wicket as India set themselves for a big total in their first innings. However, they let slip some of that advantage when Rahul got out just an over before stumps, raising Australia’s hopes after they failed to reach even 200 in their first innings on a spin-friendly track on which the ball was staying low occasionally.

Rahul, who looked

a flick as Cummins strayed to the leg side. He struck another four off the fourth ball of the over as India scored 13 runs off the first over. NEW DELHI, FEB 9

(IANS): Budding hockey stars in the country vying to make their way into the national program will gear up for the marquee domestic championships, where national selectors will be present to find fresh talent.

The domestic season for this year will begin with the all-important 13th Hockey India Senior Women National Championship 2023 scheduled to begin on February 15 in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.

Last year’s winners Odisha will be looking to defend their title, while runners up Karnataka will hope to avenge their 0-2 loss in the Final. A total of 29 teams will arrive in Kakinada to participate in the prestigious tournament.

Hockey buffs in Bengaluru will be treated to exciting action with country’s best PSUs turning up for the 3rd Hockey India Senior Men Inter-Department National Championship 2023 scheduled for February 26. In the previous edition held in New Delhi, Railway Sports Promotion Board had defeated Petroleum Sports promotion Board 3-1 in a thrilling shootout to bag the top honours while Services Sports Control Board beat Punjab National Bank to claim the third place. It was after the first edition of this newly-introduced National Championships exclusively for PSUs that players like Jugraj Singh and Sukhjeet Singh got a call-up for the Senior National Coaching camp in 2022 and subsequently made their debut with the National team.

Sakariya (3/73) and Kushang Patel (3/109) picked up three wickets apiece for Saurashtra. In reply, Saurashtra scored 76 for 2 in 30 overs at the close of play, still trailing Karnataka by 331 runs with three days play remaining in the match.

Wicket-keeper Harvik

Desai and Sheldon Jackson were unbeaten on 27 each. While Desai held one end up, Jackson looked in attacking mood, accumulating his runs off just 31 balls with the help of six boundaries.

Snell Patel and Vishvaraj Jadeja (22) were the two Saurashtra batsmen who got out on Thursday.

Right-arm fast bowler Vidwath Kaverappa (2/24) accounted for the two Saurashtra batsmen, cleaning up both.

Saurashtra Ist Innings: 76 for 2 in 30 overs (Harvik Desai 27 batting, Sheldon Jackson 27 batting; Vidwath Kaverappa 2/24).

But that did not happen and continued to bat aggressively, hitting Cummins for two fours in the fifth over Rahul helped himself to a four with a driving square through the covers.

Lyon, the best Australian off-spinner of his time who has taken 460 wickets in 116 matches, bowled well and did cause some trouble for the Indian batters but with Rohit in aggressive mode and KL Rahul very cautious, the Aussies failed to create many chances. Sharma launched him down the ground for

Sharma intended to get onto the front foot at every opportunity, unlike the Aussie openers who were both caught on the crease. He completed his half-century off 66 balls, hitting eight fours and a six. However, just when the Indians were looking forward to ending the day with 10 wickets in hand, Rahul was out and thus giving Australia a foothold into the proceedings. Brief scores: Australia 177 all out in 63.5 overs (Marnus Labuschagne 49, Steve Smith 37, Alex Carey 36, Peter Handscomb 31; Ravindra Jadeja 5-47, Ashwin 3-42) v India 77/1 in 24 overs (Rohit Shama batting 56; Kl Rahul 20, Murphy 1-13).

It was a dream come true for wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat when he was presented with his Test debut ahead of the first Test against Australia at the VCA Stadium in Jamtha, Nagpur. Bharat, who plays for Andhra in domestic cricket, got to make his Test debut alongside Suryakumar Yadav and was watched by his family as well as childhood coach J Krishna Rao when Cheteshwar Pujara gave him his cap. Bharat had been the second keeper in the Test team and with Rishabh Pant out of action for an indefinite period due to injuries sustained in a horrific car accident on December 30, there was a slot open in the side. He then got the nod ahead of Ishan Kishan to be India’s wicketkeeper in the Border- Gavaskar Trophy opener at Nagpur.

“It was a lot of joy to go back over the years from where it all started. Coming all the way long here and watching my (Test) jersey. It’s a very proud moment, lots of emotions. It is not just my dream, so many people have dreamt about me playing for India and doing well for India.”

“So much of hard work behind me, a lot of support and strength over

the years right from my teammates, my family, my wife, my parents, my friends, coaches. Without their support, it wouldn’t have been quite possible for me to share this stage today. I think a lot of credit goes to them for putting in all they had behind me and making me reach where I am today,” he said in a video posted by the BCCI on their official website.

Formula E World C’ship: ‘We are well prepared but no scope for complacency,’ says Jaguar TCS’ Barclay

HYDERABAD, FEB 9 ( AGENCIES): Jaguar TCS Racing driver Sam Bird will enter the Hyderabad E-Prix as the only driver to claim four wins in Asia, and the previous new city that hosted Formula E saw Jaguar’s Mitch Evans win the race, reports Sportsstar. With both drivers gunning for glory in India’s maiden Formula E World Championship, team principal James Barclay doesn’t want complacency to set in and is aware of the challenges the new circuit will pose. “We have two amazing drivers in Mitch and Sam and Mitch to me is the standout driver in the last two years. He has fought for the championship in the two years and narrowly just lost out on the championship. He is a phenomenal driver and has got great skills. He has been with us

since the first day and he was the first driver that we signed as a team. Overall we are well prepared but there is no scope for complacency,” Barclay told Sportstar.

Pressure is a privilege, and I believe in the theory that pressure makes diamonds. We love the big stage with all the fans there, with the spotlight on

Championship. The bigger the moment, the better it is for us,” he added.

‘Adapting quickly to the fastest circuit’ Jaguar enters Round four of the championship as fifth in teams’ standings after a podium finish and recording the fastest lap in the Diriyah double-header.

The 2.83km Hyderabad

street circuit comprising 32 laps is one of the fastest in the world and Barclay said that adapting to the track will be a challenge for his team.

“The key factor to a new track is adapting quickly and when we roll out for free Practice 1, we need to see that our simulation is accurate and is matching to new-look track. If it is not the case, you have to adapt quickly and find a way to deal with the track. Another factor will be the weather and temperature will play a role as in 35 degrees and above we need to manage the tyres, control their temperature and take into consideration other factors also. We are equipped and have to take quick decisions,” Barclay said.

Teams racing in Formula E don’t have much time for preparedness as

the race and qualification happen on the same day. The team principal acknowledged the fact that teams do race against time but that’s the challenge that Formula E poses. In the Hyderabad E-Prix, the free Practice 1 is scheduled to take place on Friday from 16:00-17:00 followed by Practice 2 on Saturday scheduled from 8:10-8:40. The Qualifying is slated to be held from 10:40-12:05 followed by the race starting at 15:00 (All Timings IST).

“In a one-day format honestly speaking we don’t have much time and have just two practice sessions within an hour of running and that’s where the simulation preparations are going to be really important. But that’s what makes Formula E unique as the teams that adapt quickly have an advantage.”

Ukraine should drop threat of boycott: IOC

PARIS,

FEB

9 (AGEN-

The International Olympic Committee has urged Ukraine to drop threats of boycotting Paris 2024 if Russian and Belarusian athletes compete, reports BBC Sports.

CIES):

IOC president Thomas Bach has told Ukraine’s Olympic Committee that such threats are “extremely regrettable”.

Ukraine is hoping to gain international support for a ban on athletes from the two countries over Russia’s invasion.

The IOC has said it will “explore a pathway” for Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete as neutrals. Ukraine’s sports minister, Vadym Guttsait, who is also president of its Olympic Committee, responded by saying the country could boycott the Paris Games, with several other European nations

IOC president Thomas Bach.

since also calling for the ban to be upheld.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has said allowing Russian athletes to compete at the 2024 Olympics would amount to showing that “terror is somehow acceptable”.

In a letter from Bach to Guttsait, which has been seen by the BBC, the IOC president says comments from Ukrainian officials suggesting allowing Russian and Belarusian ath -

letes would promote the war are “defamatory”.

Bach added that threatening a boycott is “premature” because the IOC has not discussed the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes as neutrals in “concrete terms yet”.

He also accused Ukraine of “pressuring” international federations, IOC members and future Olympic hosts “in an attempt to publicly influence

their decision making” and claims this has been “perceived by the vast majority of them as, at the very least, extremely regrettable”.

Bach said Ukrainian athletes have the “unanimous support” of the Olympic movement and that “we all feel the pain and suffering of the Ukrainian people in this cruel war”.

After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the IOC called on sports federations to exclude athletes, officials and teams from Russia and Belarus from international events but Bach has also said he is conscious of the impact such sanctions have on the athletes.

In his letter, he cited a United Nations resolution that said “any form of discrimination is incompatible with the Olympic movement” and two UN

special rapporteurs expressing concerns over a total ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes being discriminatory. Bach said these were reasons for considering their inclusion as neutrals.

He added that a boycott would be a “violation of the Olympic charter” and goes against the “fundamentals” and “principles” of the Olympic movement.

In response to Bach’s letter, Athletes for Ukraine and athlete association Global Athlete said the IOC had an “inverted stance toward the aggressor and the victim of this war” which they believe contravenes the Olympic charter.

They added that by being so critical of the boycott threat, the IOC is “denying Ukraine’s right to sovereignty”.

World Club Cup: Real Madrid beat Al Ahly to reach final

RABAT, FEB 9 (IANS):

Real Madrid will play Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal in the final of the World Club Cup here on Saturday after beating Egyptian outfit Al Ahly 4-1 in the second semifinal on Wednesday night.

A first-half goal from Vinicius Jr and strikes from Fede Valverde at the start of the second period and Rodrygo and Arribas in injury time gave Carlo Ancelotti’s men the win against a rival that had the European Champions under pressure in the closing minutes, reports Xinhua news agency.

Real Madrid went into the game without Karim Benzema, Thibaut Courtois, Ferland Mendy and Eder Militao and had Marcos Asensio added to their injury list ahead of kick-off with a slight muscle problem.

Madrid controlled the first half, but apart from an

effort that Vinicius flicked wide from a narrow-angle with his right foot, the Al Ahly defense was able to control them with relative ease. The Brazilian did put Madrid ahead four minutes before halftime after taking advantage of a defensive error to clip the ball over Mohammed El Shenawy in the Al Ahly goal. Valverde doubled Madrid’s lead at the start of the second half when he followed up a rebound from

Rodrygo’s shot. Al Ahly got a penalty in the 65th minute when El Shatat was brought down by Eduardo Camavinga, allowing Ali Maaloul to score from the penalty spot. Luka Modric saw a penalty saved by El Shenawy after Vinicius went down in the Al Ahly area, but Rodrygo assured the win in injury time after a flick from Dani Ceballos. Arribas added a fourth in the eighth minute of injury time.

EPL: Sancho earns Man Utd point in thrilling Leeds draw

GREATER MANCHESTER, FEB 9 (AGENCIES): Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho combined to deny managerless Leeds a rare Old Trafford victory as Manchester United came back from two goals down to snatch a point from a thrilling Roses clash, reports BBC Sports. The hosts looked finished when Raphael Varane turned Crysencio Summerville’s cutback into his own net to put Leeds two ahead after Wilfried Gnonto had given them a first-minute lead.

German Cup: Dortmund beat Bochum to reach last 8

BOCHUM, FEB 9 (AGENCIES): Borussia

Dortmund captain Marco

Reus snatched a 70th-minute winner as they battled past gutsy VfL Bochum in a 2-1 win on Wednesday to book a spot in the German Cup last eight, reports Sportsstar. Dortmund, who faces Chelsea in the Champions League Round of 16 next week, has now won all five matches it has played this year, including its four league games.

It had the upper hand in the first half but came up against a disciplined Bochum backline.

Julian Brandt went close with a free kick and Sebastien Haller slipped and sent the ball flying over the bar with only Bochum keeper Manuel Riemann to beat in the 43rd.

Dortmund needed a bit of luck to open the scoring as Riemann charged out of the box to clear with the ball landing at the feet of Dortmund’s Emre Can on

the halfway line. Can took a chance with a shot from 50 metres out and the ball rolled into goal before Riemann could scramble back in first-half stoppage time.

Bochum was the better side after the break and earned a 64th-minute penalty following a lengthy VAR review for a hand ball and Kevin Stoeger sent keeper Gregor Kobel the wrong way

since October. ( BBC Sports).

duties after recovering from physical and mental issues, scored his first Premier League goal since September when he drove home from 10 yards after Luke Shaw’s initial shot had been blocked.

Varane brought an

excellent save out of Illan Meslier as Manchester United hunted a goal to extend their 13-match winning streak on home soil. Anything less than a point would have been extremely harsh on Leeds, who sacked manager Jes-

se Marsch on Monday, and they also hit the post through Brenden Aaronson in between the home side’s two goals.

The result moves them a point clear of the relegation zone and above West Ham into 16th, although after this superb contest, the Elland Road rematch in four days’ time will be an occasion to relish.

Leeds claim a precious point

The general narrative around Elland Road in the wake of Marsch’s dismissal has been that the Leeds’ hierarchy would use a week that features two games against Manchester United to recruit a repl acement

before key clashes with relegation rivals Everton and Southampton later this month. Leeds had not won a league game at Old Trafford since 1981 and before kick-off many of their fans were speculating about what their margin of defeat would be, rather than whether they could get something from the game. That assessment reckoned without a super motivated Leeds team, led by former England futsal head coach Michael Skubala and lethargic hosts, who began with a sloppiness seldom seen under Ten Hag since that woeful opening to his tenure that featured defeats to Brigh ton and Brentford.

to level. Reus, who came on as a substitute in the 67th, tapped in the winner three minutes later after Jude Bellingham had charged through and laid the ball off for his captain in the box.

Indian Open returns after four years

NEW DELHI, FEB 9 (PTI):

The Hero Indian Open golf returns later this month after a four-year hiatus with a bevy of national and international stars in action and a bigger prize purse as the organisers aim for normality to be restored to the premier event following the COVID-19 disruption.

The tournament, to be held at the DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurgaon from February 23 to 26, was last played at the same venue in 2019 after which it could not be held due to pandemicrelated restrictions.

But with the situation normalising and air travel back to pre-pandemic days, a field of 120 national and international players, including several top-100 foreign and Indian stars such as Shubhankar Sharma and Shiv Kapur, will vie for the

USD two million prize purse. The tournament gains significance with its 2,750 ‘Race to Dubai’ ranking points and 2,000 Ryder Cup points on offer. And with the top-10 players from the DP World Tour, who are not otherwise exempt, also getting a card to the PGA Tour, there is an added incentive for players to compete here.

A total of 28 Indians, including Shubhankar, Manu Gandas -- who earned a card in the DP World Tour because of the latest alliance between PGTI, DP World Tour and PGA Tour -- and two-time Indian Open win-

ner SSP Chawrasia -- who has received a sponsor invite -- will rub shoulders with the best in the world.

Shubhankar, who got off to a flying start at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship -- the first strokeplay event of the year on the DP World Tour -- will spearhead the Indian challenge and hope to bag his maiden Indian Open trophy. The title triumph could provide the perfect motivation to the 26-year-old to compete in the 151st Open to be held at Royal Liverpool in July.

Among the international players, defending champion Stephen Gallacher of Scotland, 2018 Ryder Cup-winning captain Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn, his country-mate and fellow Ryder Cup team-mate Thorbjorn Olesen, besides top Sc ottish golfer Robert

MacIntyre (OWGR rank 87) will vie for the top prize of USD 3,40,000 (Rs 2.80 crore approximately). The runnerup will be richer by USD 2,20,000 (Rs 1.80 crore). Olesen, the winner of the British Masters in May 2022, will be one of the favourites for the top purse, given the 33-yearold’s current form and his tied-4th finish in the recent DP World Tour event at Ras Al Khaimah Championship. Europe’s rising star, Nicolai Hojgaard, will make his maiden visit to India, as will Olesen. With two DP World Tour (originally European Tour) titles to his name, the 21-year-old Hojgaard will turn 22 a little over two weeks after the Indian Open and a win at the DLF Golf and Country Club will be an early birthday present for the Dane, currently ranked 133rd in the world.
