PM inaugurates National Mayors’ Conference
SAYS CITIES CANNOT BE DEVELOPED WITH ELECTION-CENTRIC APPROACH
GANDHINAGAR, SEP 20 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday asked mayors of BJP-ruled urban bodies to plan a holis tic development of cities and said the elected representa tives should not think just in terms of winning polls as cities cannot be developed with an election-centric ap proach. He also urged the may ors to focus on urban plan ning, creation of satellite towns and development of Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities to ease the burden on large cities.Modi was speaking after virtually inaugurating an all India conference of mayors of BJP-ruled cit ies held in Gujarat capital Gandhinagar.Asmany 118 mayors and deputy mayors of BJPruled urban local bodies from 18 states and Union Territories are participating in the two-day event.
The PM also urged mayors and other local elect ed representatives to spend
time with the poor ben eficiaries (of government schemes) to understand their issues and also work on the beautification of their respective cities.
“The elected represen tatives should not think just in terms of winning elec tions. You cannot develop your city with an electioncentric approach. Many times, decisions which could prove beneficial for the cities are not taken just out of the fear that such decisions can result in election loss,” the PM said at the inaugural ses sion of the conference.
He said states should take the lead in urban plan ning instead of just depend ing on the RecallingCentre.his days as Gujarat chief minister, Modi said the state was ahead of other states in adopting the latest urban transport systems and utili ties, such as the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, app based auto-rickshaw ser vices and multi-modal trans port systems
He said the Metro rail network in different cities of India was less than 250 kilometres in 2014 and has now increased to more than 750 km, while work is going on for another 1,000 km.
“Today, we are devel oping 100 smart cities across the country and so far, we have completed projects worth Rs 75,000 crore. Ur ban housing is a major chal lenge for cities. Under our PM Awas Yojna (urban), we have so far allotted 1.25 crore houses to the poor,” the PMThesaid.budget for housing projects has been increased from Rs 20,0 00 crore in
2014 to Rs 2,00,000 crore today, he “Thissaid.shows our com mitment towards the urban poor population,” Modi said.
“Do you (mayors) sit with them and discuss their issues? We only assume that since it has been published in newspapers, the work must have been done. The more you meet the poor and work for them, they will return it with a bonus. I urge you to finish projects in time and without any com promise on quality,” he said.
The prime minister also appealed to mayors to ensure registration and training of all street vendors so that they can avail loans under the PM Svanidhi scheme. He also urged the may ors to focus on urban plan ning and creation of satellite towns as well as developing Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities to ease the burden on large cities.“You all need to think about the future. Urban
planning should not be adhoc. We can standardise urban planning through for mulating policies. This will also eliminate grey areas,” he said. The PM also stressed on increasing people’s par ticipation in maintaining public assets, such as gar dens.“Not everything can be achieved by spending mon ey. People’s participation is also necessary. People’s participation is necessary for development. We have to change their habits like throwing garbage in the open and wasting water,” he said.He stressed on the “beautification of cities”, which can be achieved by organising competitions among wards as to which one is cleaner and more beautiful than the other.
The prime minister also urged mayors to think of setting up a “city mu seum” to showcase the heri tage, history and what is unique to the city.

Subsequently, it had been clarified that any area recorded in any gov ernment record irrespective of ownership would invite applicability of the Forest (Conservation) Act. He said the State gov

If you have the support of 10 PCC delegates, you can file the nomination papers and the election will be held on Oc tober 17,” Ramesh said.
The senior Congress leader also added that if there are no nominations and a consensus has reached on the candidate, then the new president will be an nounced on October 1.
“I would prefer a con sensus to evolve around a candidate and if that is not possible then let’s go for election. 9,000 delegates will elect the president,” he said.

dc-1096/22 NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2022 NATIONAL/STATE 5
Magical solution
There has been a clamour for imposition of President’s Rule in Nagaland by various politi cal parties including CSOs on various counts. Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) and Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) based their demands on the necessity of ensuring removal of impediments to early solution to the Naga political issue under the current ruling oppositionless United Democratic Alliance(UDA). The parties believed that under PR, a neutral authority will be in place to ensure speedier move towards Naga political solution. Another political party, the Rising Political Party(RPP) on the other hand maintained that owing to financial crisis due to alleged misman agement by the ruling UDA, coupled with failure on all fronts, the situation in Nagaland called for imposition of PR. Various other organisations have alleged that the opposition-less UDA government has been using the plea of being facilitator for Naga political solution as a cover while in reality, the UDA leaders including the Core Committee On Naga Political Issue (CCoNPI) are merely in motion but without any headway. Since 2003, various regional party –led governments(NPF to NDPP) in coalition with the BJP, have been projecting and pushing themselves to centre stage as facilitator for secur ing early solution to the Naga political issue but having no direct role to play in the negotiations. The government of India after Narendra Modi became prime minister in 2014, had made a serious attempt to clear the deck by having agreements signed with the two Naga political groups-NSCN(I-M) on August 3,2015(Framework Agreement) and WC,NNPGs on November 17,2017(Agreed Position). The political parties and CSOs (including NGBF, CNSA, NPAC) have only sounded the need to secure final agree ment since there has been prolonged and unending negotiations for the past 25 years. These organisa tions have only spoken of the fact that this is per haps, the longest ever negotiation in recent memory which has reached a conclusive stage(as per the statements of the various organisations as well as the government of India) but has yet to see the light of day. The stage appears set for holding elections and this brings to mind various slogans associated with it. Earlier in 1998 Nagaland Post coined the slogan ‘Solution Not Election’ based merely on the assumption, that there was nothing to lose in post poning polls but much to gain by securing solution. Nothing happened even after change of guard which came to power on the promise of solution within three months in 2003. Then came the BJP slogan ‘Election for Solution’, purportedly coined by its then national general secretary in-charge of North east, Ram Madhav in 2018. The demands for president’s rule presently, has added the slogan ‘President’s Rule For Solution.’ However, there is another slogan that has also found mention in recent times – ‘No Solution Is Solution’. Anyway, the demand for presi dent’s rule in Nagaland cannot override various fac tors. One crucial and very unfortunate aspect is that elected members feel like fish out of water without power. Even voters and supporters don’t relish the idea of their elected members being in opposition. That is why there is an opposition-less government that enables power without responsibility. Since BJP is part and parcel of UDA, there is no way in which the Centre (read home ministry) will commit a politi cal hara-kiri. Therefore, the Suspension of Opera tion for Solution or SoS in Nagaland has more to do with political power and less with political principle.

The Divine Commandment of Lif
…be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect. — Matthew 5:48
Our Lord’s exhortation to us in Matthew 5:38-48 is to be generous in our behavior toward everyone. Beware of liv ing according to your natural affections in your spiritual life. Everyone has natural affections— some people we like and others we don’t like. Yet we must never let those likes and dislikes rule our Christian life. “If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another” (1 John 1:7), even those toward whom we have no affection.
The example our Lord gave us here is not that of a good person, or even of a good Christian, but of God Himself. “… be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.” In other words, simply show to the other person what God has shown to you. And God will give you plenty of real life opportunities to prove whether or not you are “perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.” Being a disciple means deliberately identifying yourself with God’s interests in other people. Jesus says, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:34-35).
The true expression of Christian character is not in good-doing, but in God-likeness. If the Spirit of God has trans formed you within, you will exhibit divine characteristics in your life, not just good human characteristics. God’s life in us expresses itself as God’s life, not as human life trying to be godly. The secret of a Christian’s life is that the supernatural becomes natural in him as a result of the grace of God, and the experience of this becomes evident in the practical, eve ryday details of life, not in times of intimate fellowship with God. And when we come in contact with things that create confusion and a flurry of activity, we find to our own amaze ment that we have the power to stay wonderfully poised even in the center of it all.

Post-mortem
Indian performance at Samarkand
During the last fort night, India has asserted itself dip lomatically by refusing to join an important pillar of the U.S.-led IPEF, and at the same time PM Modi in Sa markand has demonstrated his government’s resolve to act glocally and resolutely in interactions with regional leaders. The 22nd summit of the eight-nation Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) took place in Uzbeki stan’s capital Samarkand, last week. The summit was held amid the growing geopolitical turmoil set-off by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and China’s ag gressive military posturing in the Taiwan Straits.
China which initiated this regional grouping as Shanghai Five in 1996, has transformed the forum into an influential grouping of 8 nations, with many more like Iran to join as a perma nent member and diverse countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkiye, Belarus and Mongolia being given Ob server status, which shows its transformation into an influential regional forum, besides challenging to other western regional alliances.
In his address at the summit, PM Modi obdu rately touched every rel
evant aspect of the cur rent geo-political situation.
He urged SCO to strive to develop reliable, resil ient and diversified supply chains in the region. For this, better connectivity will be required, besides giv ing full rights of transit to each other, he asserted, in a veiled reference to Pakistan.
He also batted for making India a regional manufac turing hub. On tackling the challenges of food security, he spoke of India’s efforts to popularise millets as an al ternative and cheap option.
In a speech that was otherwise free from refer ences to India’s regional issues on terrorism with Pakistan and on territorial sovereignty with China, Mr. Modi called for greater cooperation in the Eurasian region. He also focused on initiatives on manufacturing that India is willing to pilot in the next year, when India assumes the chair of the SCO and hosts the Summit in mid-2023.
Modi-Xi Jinping meeting
The most important meeting from India’s stand point was a possible meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese Presi dent Jinping. Everyone wondered whether road blocks have been cleared
and temperaments cooled after the recent success of commander level talks be tween two countries on the issues of Chinese ag gression in Indian Ladakh region in May 2020. But, officially the MEA men tioned no such meetings. In fact, Samarkand offered the perfect opportunity for two leaders to reset the ties. But there seemed little willing ness from the two sides, to compromise. In fact, if the reports are to be believed, the exchange between the two leaders, reminded one of the cold treatment meted out by Mr Modi to former Pakistan’s prime minister, Nawaz Sharif at the 2014 SAARC summit, though it eventually ended with a handshake at the last mo ment, but nothing such hap pened in Samarkand. But the moot question here is whether China is in a mood to mend ties with India?
Well, it seems no, not at the moment perhaps. Modi and Xi have met twice earlier but that is not enough to read each other’s thoughts and also make a convincing and principled case, though both the countries stand to gain much economically, if ties areForeignimproved.Secretary Vi nay Kwatra, when asked about a meeting that never
happened said that he did not “think there is anything more to read into that”.
Modi-Putin meeting PM Modi’s bilateral meeting with Russian Presi dent Putin at the summit also received a lot of atten tion. The two leaders shared the customary diplomatic greetings, with Modi spe cifically emphasising that the modern era was not a time of war. According to reports, Putin acknowl edged India’s position on the Ukrainian conflict and reaffirmed his commitment to a speedy resolution. India and Chinese leaders expressing their concerns directly with the Russian leader about the war in Ukraine is reflective of global concerns about the effects of its aggression, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said last Friday.
The mainstream American media on Fri day praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for telling Russian President Vladimir Putin that this is “not the time for war” in Ukraine. It was the lead story on the webpages of both The Washington Post and The New York Times, and was widely carried by the main stream American media.
Modi-Erdogan bon homie
Among other im promptu meetings was the one important one between PM Modi and Turkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which was held unannounced on Friday. After the meeting, Modi un derlined that the focus was on economic ties between the twoThecountries.MEA,in a state ment, described the meeting as a review of current IndiaTurkiye relations. While noting the increase in recent years in economic relations, particularly bilateral trade, it acknowledged the potential for further enhancement of economic and commercial partnerships. Erdogan last visited India in 2017.
While India-Turkiye’s economic and commercial cooperation constitutes an important dimension of the bilateral relationship, diplomatic ties have been adversely impacted over Turkiye’s public criticism of the revocation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and the February 2020 riots in north-east Delhi.
Modi-Raisi meeting, looking ahead Another important meeting at Samarkand was between PM Modi and Iranian President Ebra him Raisi. Both the lead ers took the opportunity
to discuss boosting ties in areas like energy, commerce and connectivity. They also reviewed progress of the Shahid Behesti terminal at Chabahar Port and there are indications that the Iranian president also discussed a new mechanism to supply crude oil to India on rupee payment basis, instead of American dollars. This may bring the two countries closer on the trade and economic fronts.
The manner in which Mr Modi and his diplomatic team carried the business at Samarkand shows the maturity and coming of age of the Indian diplomacy under PM Modi. India will be hosting the next SCO Summit in 2023, and this will offer Mr Modi an op portunity to develop the organisation into a more meaningful and cohesive organisation. A fact evident by the number of countries, which are desirous of join ing it, due to its regional potential.

like the first-quarter GDP data had less than a fortnight ago. Headline retail inflation, 7 percent year-onyear in August, did not deviate as much from the consensus, 6.9 percent, as the 13.5 percent real GDP growth did, missing forecasts including the central bank’s, by 2.5-3 percentage points. Concerns about the growth deficit have also been compounded by July’s industrial output that rose a bare 2.4 percent year-on-year.
The latest data continue the doubt if the current inflation epi sode has concluded. This picked up compared to July’s 6.7 percent, while there are no convincing signs of a stabilising recovery. Which side of the equation will the cen tral bank prioritise at its review meeting this month end is compli cated by macro stability consider ations? There are no easy choices. The weaker-than-expected growth in the April-June quarter showed a sequential contraction of -1.4 per cent in seasonally adjusted terms that, according to the OECD, was the second-worst amongst G20 na tions (overall contraction of -0.4 percent) and lagged only China’s
A surprisedrisehigher-than-anticipatedinpriceslastmonthanalysts,much-2.6 percent.Netexports pulled down the most; this drag could accentuate from a further slowing of the world economy ahead. Supply-side weaknesses showed up in sequen tial declines in manufacturing, construction, trade, hospitality, transport, and communication services’ segments. In fact, the shrinkage in the trade, hospitality, transport category is considerable over April-June 2019, whose level it trailed at 84.5 percent with con struction rising 1.2 percent.
Progress in industrial output is also best compared to AprilJuly 2019 due to distortions in Q1:FY21 and Q1:FY22. In this year’s first quarter, industrial production has risen 5 percent above Q1:FY20, slowing to 2.1 percent in July. The use-based production data is a good gauge of consumer demand strength. Here, signs are disappointing: Consumer durables’ output contracted -7.9 percent over April-June 2019, or at 92.1 percent of its level then; nondurables’ output, which proxies lower-end consumption demand more closely, still lagged at 98.8 percent of its size in the quarter three years ago; while capital goods contracted -4.4 percent.
No visible improvements were seen in July 2022 over 2019 — durables contracted -6.8 percent, non-durables -2.5 percent, and capital goods output growth of 6.5 percent was upon a -7 percent yearon-year contraction in July 2019.
Many questions surface about the recovered demand strength, if the recovery is exhausting itself even before complete restora tion, of an uncertain and uneven revival as substantial parts of the services’ economy lag behind, to cite some. The growth deficit in the trade, hospitality, transport category, and weak growth of construction is significant from the standpoint of aggregate demand — these are comparably informal economic segments employing large numbers of un- and semiskilled persons; diminishment over a three-year period could reflect permanent damage or lowered potential output. In this context, the strong persistence of infla tion, elevated unemployment and anecdotal evidences of K-shaped recovery, create uncertainty about the size of the output gap.
The August inflation data shows fairly broad-based price pressures, not restricted to food prices subject to much intervention
and manipulation. Retail food and beverages inflation accelerated to 7.6 percent annually, that in cere als jumped to 8.6 percent from 6.8 percent in both categories in July; the impact of lower acreage, insuf ficient buffer stocks to influence prices, and incentives needs to be seen. Core inflation is unmoving around 6 percent, prices of both goods and services components rose in August, the sequential momentum in different coreinflation measures was either firm or rose, services’ inflation shows signs of comeback pressures, while firms continued to pass-on costs and ease their burdened margin. Wholesale inflation data released on September 14 showed it moderating to 12.41 percent in August 2022 compared to 11.64 percent one year ago, from 13.93 percent in July and 16.23 percent in June. It remains high and in double-digit nonetheless; coupled with pipeline pressures, prospec tive passthroughs of costs to retail levels with the inception of festival demand this quarter and beyond cannot be ruled out.
The feeling that inflation is under a firm grip owes a lot to the passed peak of 8.3 percent in April that hasn’t resurfaced. But
that does not diminish the fact that 7 percent inflation is way above target, that it looks neither low nor stable; and that inflation surprises, in both directions, can not be ruled out. This doubts if the present inflation incident is durablyTheover.trade-off is more com plicated because the external envi ronment has turned much riskier. The US central bank is expected reacting aggressively as US infla tion and demand both remain strong; a 75-basis point increase is expected at the FOMC meeting on September 20-21. Preserving macroeconomic stability at a time of extraordinary and fundamental realignments assumes impor tance, especially for the currency. Although supporting a recovery may have precedence, a growing divergence in monetary policy, negative real rates, would not be easy to sustain in a hazardous en vironment of unknown duration. Most expect the RBI, which will also revise its growth forecast the second time this year, to adjust the repo rate by 35-50 basis point this month. We should know soon.

Reforming the civil services to make it people-friendly and result-oriented has been on the agenda of various governments since the be ginning of independence.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also been reiter atingTheit. Indian civil service system is one of the oldest administrative systems in the world. In India, it had its origin in the Mauryan period. Kautilya’s Artha shastra laid down the basic principles for the selection of civil servants, the meth ods of their performance evaluation, and the code of conduct to be followed by them.During the medieval period, Akbar expanded the ambit of the civil service. The Mughals expanded their civil service system centered on the management of land revenue etc. The British civil service was a late entrant. It arrived on the Indian scene only after the takeover of the East India Company, by the British government in the 1860s. On the recommenda tions of Macaulay’s report, in 1854, the Civil Services Commission was set up to recruit civil servants. The British government set up the Indian Civil Service in
1911, primarily with the objective of strengthening the British administration. From 1922 onwards, the examination was conducted in India as well, first in Al lahabad and then in Delhi, with the setting up of the Federal Public Service Com mission. The Indian civil service differed from other imperial services- primar ily manning top civil posts under a rigid hierarchy of a bureaucratic system that for mer British Prime Minister Lloyd George had dubbed the “Steel Frame” of the BritishAfterRaj. independence, our leaders decided to con tinue with the “steel frame” and renamed it the Indian Administrative Service. Nat urally, the culture of ICS continued within the IAS. However, in the new demo cratic ecosystem, the IAS was envisaged as becoming subservient to the people and eschewing its autocratic tradition. But habits die hard and for our omnipotent civil servants, it was harder. It took some time to adopt to the culture of democracy with our written constitu tion mandating the people’s elected representatives to be the tativesdecision-makers.Thepeople’srepresenandthemembersof
the bureaucracy are a part of the same society- they cannot behave like Rajas lording over a hapless praja. The aura of invincibility ex uded by the powerful Rajas in our country and by the “brown sahibs” has had a deep-rooted impact on our deferential janta – who even after decades of inde pendence, looks towards the ruling classes as their “Maibaap” and pays obeisance to them. They have not enforced accountability of the rul ing classes, and have still not recognized them as their servants/sewaks, as the nomenclature Public servants demanded, but on the contrary, continue the colonial legacy of treating them as their masters. This has created an overinflated and distorted ego in the bu reaucratic-politico class, the deleterious effects of which are still evident. Whereas the political class desires to rule as per their whimsical selfish agendas and not as per the rule of law mandated by our constitution, the civil servants also delude them selves that they are there to’ rule’, instead of serving the masses. For this culture to change irrevocably, both the political class and civil
servants have to shun their old mindset and come to terms with the democratic ethos. Both of them cur rently are public servants in name only- their conduct and behavior display, in every way, their autocratic mindset. Several committees and commissions have been set up from time to time to reform the bureaucracy and make it honest, efficient and people-centric. The two Administrative Reforms Commissions, the Sarkaria Commission, and various other committees have made a plethora of recommenda tions to transform the civil services and to make them accountable to the people and result-oriented, but not much progress has been made.Undoubtedly politics is also responsible to a large extent for the mess that we are in today. However, the bureaucracy and par ticularly the civil servants occupying senior positions must shoulder a large part of the blame. Even if the inept politicians are busy playing nefarious politics of caste, religion, language, and region and are mired in corruption, it is incum bent upon the permanent bureaucracy -which has the bounden duty towards the
nation and the people, to do their best to ensure that the rule of law prevails. For this to happen, they need to introspect and cleanse the rot created by the corrupt and self-serving elements within.Acountry cannot boast of having a Just “Rule of Law” regime when people serving in the premier ser vices like Indian Adminis trative Service are allowed to be inefficient and corrupt.
The larger blame for this malaise has to be put on the IAS service itself, whose officers man the im portant positions in the administrative structures. These are the people who are supposed to ensure that nobody-irrespective of their rank/position, including the political class, is allowed to violate the “Rule of Law” with impunity, and those violating it are not allowed to remain in public service.
The members of these services should have striven to ensure that the country remained steadfast on the path of virtue and rule of law instead of protecting the errant and the corrupt.
Public services are the key pillars of any gover nance structure and unless they develop and inculcate the virtue of integrity and
selfless service towards the people, the nation can never attain its full potential. The political class must become aware of the incessant de generation of the system because of their myopic and selfish behavior over the past severalThedecades.rulershave created an intimidatory ecosystem. Loyalty to the reigning pow ers is the sine qua non of governance. Honesty, integ rity, impartiality, service to the people, and justice -the very essence of administra tion, are all regarded as troublesome vices by every reigningThisdispensation.mustchange. For India to prosper and march on the path designated by the “rule of law”, errant behavior displayed by mem bers of the highest civil services must be corrected stringently. They have to become accountable to the public and fearlessly serve to promote sabka vikas. When they have made the choice to serve the public, public service, then they have to dedicatedly serve the public, not themselves.
Let us always meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.

NEW DELHI, SEP 20 (PTI): Vice President Jag deep Dhankhar on Tuesday said he was pained by any adverse comment against India that is totally discon nected from the ground reality and is picked up by the media in high decibel.
Addressing the All In dia Management Associa tion’s (AIMA) 49th National Management Convention, Dhankhar recounted the government’s achievements in dealing with the CO VID-19 pandemic, ease of doing business, economic reforms and the upcoming G-20 presidency of India.
“The executive leader ship has attained on ground what we never imagined ear lier,” the Vice President said.
Dhankhar said the pan demic made everyone aware of the strength the country possessed and it was re flected in every facet of life when people came forward to alleviate the suffering of those in need of help.
“It pains my heart sometimes when anywhere from the globe there will be a voice totally disconnected from the ground reality of
this country saying some thing adverse and that is picked by the media in high decibel,” the Vice President said. Dhankhar said such remarks were an affront to industry leaders attending the convention, who pos sessed much more maturity than the “gentleman speak ing from“Thatanywhere”.kindofpolitics has to be contained and that containment can take place only in the peer group which
is before me. I wouldnt re flect more on this,” the vice presidentDhankharsaid. also lauded the government’s efforts in vaccination against Covid in spite of the great hurdles generated without any ratio nale or “Thosepremise.who did that challenge were unaware that they were distancing themselves from the genius of the Indian mind and were not sharing India’s growth story,” the vice president said, referring to his tenure as the Governor of West Bengal. The Vice President noted that the government had taken great efforts on account of ease of gover nance, an area that used to give industry leaders “sleep less nights”.“Itisa matter of time that the optimisation that is taking place will fructify in a more soothing ecosystem.
The response is amazing,” Dhankhar said.
He said India has never received the attention glob ally as it does now.
“It is a matter of pride that the image the Indian prime minister has, the im age the Indian foreign min ister has, the image every Indian has abroad is very different. We are a nation on the rise, and why not, centuries ago we were lead ers in every sphere of human activity and we need to take pride in this,” Dhankhar said. The Vice President said India was assuming the presidency of G-20 later this year, which would give the country an opportunity to shape the global economic and political Dhankharagenda.also called upon business and industry leaders to take a proactive role in India’s mission to become self-reliant.

India poised to grow at 7% this year: CEA
NEW DELHI, SEP 20
(AGENCIES): India’s economy is well poised to grow at a sustained rate of seven per cent “as we go into 2023” and for the rest of the decade, chief economic advisor V Anantha Nag eswaran said on Tuesday. His projections are lower than the estimate of 8-8.5 per cent GDP growth in the current financial year pro vided in the government’s Economic Survey in Janu ary 2022, Business Standard reported.“India recently sur passed the United Kingdom to become the world’s fifth largest economy in abso lute terms. While that is a creditable achievement, it is not exactly a surprise,” Nageswaran said in a virtual address at the Global Fin tech Fest in Mumbai.
“I think this decade-whether we call it a decade or something more than that--India looks at the mo ment well poised to repeat a sustained growth rate of around seven per cent for
the remainder of the decade as we go into 2023 and be yond,” he said.
The Reserve Bank of India’s forecast for GDP growth in the current fi nancial year is 7.2 per cent. Many analysts, however, expect the central bank to lower its GDP forecasts as the growth in the first quar ter of the year far undershot projections.India’s GDP grew 13.5 per cent in April-June, lower than the RBI’s projection of 16.2 per cent.
For the previous finan cial year as a whole, GDP growth was at 8.7 per cent, according to the govern ment’sSpeakingestimate. about the future scope of financial
technology in India, Nag eswaran said a shift was now being observed from the creation of the infrastruc ture to the creation of the “superstructure”.“Thenextphase that happened even as the pan demic was raging was about increasing access to finan cial services. Credit, insur ance, investment (have been) driven by digital platforms and also propelled by fin techs in banking innova tion,” he said.
The chief economic ad visor stressed upon the cru cial need for interoperability in the financial technology space and said India and Singapore would be work ing to smoothen processes related to remittances and bring down costs.
“…we are going to en able interoperability with Singapore’s e-nets platform so that our workers living in Singapore can remit money back to India instantaneous ly. This has been facilitated with the UAE as well be cause remittances from In
dian workers overseas is an important component for their families back home,” he said. While acknowledging the vast scope of financial technology in furthering financial inclusion, Nag eswaran however, flagged risks, particularly for those with a low level of financial literacy.“We’re talking about credit guarantee funds for MSMEs (which) are also cash-flow based lending without any collateral and that is what is both a plus and minus because non-col lateral based lending can be done through digital apps. It has also created abuse of the system,” he “Theresaid.isa need to make sure that cash-flow based lending apps do not exploit borrowers especially if they are financially illit erate. That is why making these things available in the local language is critical in bridging the financial divide and the digital divide,” he said.
India to see record smartphone sales worth Rs 61,000 cr this festive season
NEW DELHI, SEP 20 (IANS): India is likely to witness record sales of smartphones this festive season, at around $7.7 billion (over $61,000 crore), and 1 out of every 3 smartphones sold during the fes tive season will be 5G enabled, a report showed on E-commerceTuesday.channels are expected to capture 61 per cent of the overall sales, down from 66 per cent last year, according to Counterpoint Research.
The smartphone retail aver age selling price (ASP) during the festive season will grow 12 per cent to reach its highest ever at $242, although the unit sales may decline by 9 per cent (on-year).
India’s smartphone market is entering this festive season with the highest ever channel inventory of over 10 weeks, the report noted.
“The festive season has been the highlight of India’s smart phone market where almost 20 per cent of the annual sales happen over four-five weeks. Hence, this
festive period is important for all the players in the value chain,” said senior analyst Prachir Singh. This year, the sales will start on September 23 with Amazon’s Great India Festival and Flipkart’s Big Billion“AccordingDays. to our forecast, the festive season smartphone sales will account for around $7.7 bil lion, the highest ever. However, we estimate a 9 per cent YoY decline in terms of shipments. We have seen a similar trend in China’s 618 festival this year, where shipments declined 10 per cent YoY,” Singh noted. The festive shopping season will end with the Diwali sale.
According to Research Direc tor Tarun Pathak, the retail ASP (average selling price), similar to the total value, will be the highest ever and may record 12-15 per cent YoY
Thegrowth.consumer demand is likely to be high, especially in the mid-tier and premium segments.
The various promotions and offers targeting the Rs 15,000 segments have already been announced by the brands and channels on social media.“The increasing affordability of these devices due to promotions and offers will drive their sales. This will be further supported by the 4G-to-5G migration. Accord ing to our estimates, one out of every three smartphones sold dur ing the festive season will be a 5G smartphone,” said Pathak.
In terms of channels, the of fline market players are pushing promotions and offers that are on par with their online counterparts.
“The entry-tier and budget segments have witnessed a consid erable decline in recent quarters. However, we expect these seg ments to grow during the festive season, though the growth may be limited as the consumers in these segments have been under pressure due to macroeconomic headwinds,” Pathak added.

Gujarati film ‘Chhello Show’ isIndia’s official entry for Oscars
Gujarati coming-ofage drama “Chhel lo Show” is India’s official entry for the 95th Academy Awards, the Film Federation of India (FFI) announced on Tuesday.
Titled “Last Film Show” in English, the mov ie, directed by Pan Nalin, will release in theatres countrywide on October 14.
“’Chhello Show’ is India’s official entry for Oscars 2023,” FFI Secre tary General Supran Sen told PTI.The film, which will represent the country in the best international feature film category at the Oscars, is produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur’s banner Roy Kapur Films, Jugaad Mo tion Pictures, Monsoon Films, Chhello Show LLP, and Marc Duale.
The story is inspired by Nalin’s own memories of falling in love with movies
as a child in rural Gujarat. Set in a remote rural village of Saurashtra, the film follows the story of a nine-year-old boy who begins a lifelong love affair with cinema when he bribes his way into a rundown movie palace and spends a summer watching movies from the projection booth.
“Chhello Show”, which features Bhavin Rabari, Bhavesh Shrimali, Richa Meena, Dipen Raval and Paresh Mehta, had its world premiere as the open
ing film at the Tribeca Film Festival in June last year.
It won multiple awards during its festival run, in cluding the Golden Spike at the 66th Valladolid Film Festival in Spain where it also enjoyed commercial success during its theatri cal run.Last year, Tamil drama “Koozhangal” (“Pebbles”), directed by filmmaker Vi nothraj PS, was India’s of ficial entry at the Oscars but didn’t make the shortlist.
The last Indian film that made it to the final five was Aamir Khan-led “Lagaan” in “Mother2001.India” (1958) and “Salaam Bombay” (1989) are the other two Indian movies to have made it to the top five.
The 95th Academy Awards are scheduled to take place on March 12, 2023 in Los Angeles. (PTI)

India’s frailties with the ball were laid bare as Australia gunned down a formidable 209-run target rather com fortably for a four-wicket win in the first T20I here on Tuesday.KLRahul (55 off 35 balls) and Hardik Pandya (71 not out off 30) helped India post a daunting 208 for six after Australia put the hosts in to bat.

Dinesh Karthik was picked ahead of Rishabh Pant. After Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli fell cheap ly, Rahul and Suryakumar shared a 68-run stand off 42 balls. It was raining sixes when they were in the middle.Rahul’s walk across the stumps to dispatch
Josh Hazlewood over the cow corner made his intent clear before he whipped Cameron Green for a mas sive six over deep square leg. Suryakumar’s style of play is often awe-inspiring and the Mohali crowd got to see him at his lethal best.
Of his four sixes, his swat over fine leg off a good length ball from Cummins stood out.
India were able to maintain their tempo in the middle overs as Suryaku mar picked up leggie Adam Zampa for two successive sixes over long on and deep midwicket.Hardik then took over and pushed India past 200. He was quick to punish anything short from the pacers and his pick-up shot off Pat Cummins in the 18th over was the highlight of his entertaining knock.
He smashed three consecutive sixes off Green in the 20th over including a flat one in the mid wicket region. The last five overs yielded 67 runs.
