Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, AUG 27 (NPN): Eastern Naga land People’s Organisation (ENPO) has thrown a span ner in the works by declaring a boycott to the scheduled State Assembly elections ex pected to be held in the early part of 2023 or speculated to be held by end of 2022. There are 20 assem bly constituencies under Tuensang- 4, Mon-9, Long leng-2, Kiphire-2, Noklak-2 and Shamator-1. The ruling NDPP (after 21 NPF legisla tors merged with it), has 15 MLAs while BJP has four and one Independent. If the boycott takes effect, it would mean a con stitutional crisis on one hand and also a big setback for the NDPP. However, in the pres ent political scenario, NDPP is the dominant party with a total of 42 MLAs in a house of 60. BJP has 12, NPF 4 and two Independents. The threat to boycott the assembly election is to press for the ENPO demand for a separate Frontier Na galand State. A decision to this effect was taken at a joint consultative meeting held on August 26 at Hotel Saramati Dimapur attended by ENPO functionaries, selected lead ers from Eastern Nagaland, Talk team members and seven tribal bodies and fron tal organizations.Inastatement issued by ENPO, the house, after a day-long deliberation on the issue of its demand for a separate state, unanimously resolved that “people of Eastern Nagaland shall not participate in any election process of the State and Cen tral” unless their demand for a separate State– “Frontier Nagaland” was fulfilled, as demanded by the people of EasternAccordingNagaland.to ENPO, the seven tribal bodies–Chang Khulei grassrootstoCouncilcilPumji,UnitedPhomCouncil,KhiamniunganSetshang,TribalKonyakUnion,People’sCouncil,SangtamLikhumTikhirTribalCounandYimkhiungTribalhavebeenendorsedmobilisesupportatthetoensurethatthe decision was implemented. The union has also pointed out that the pri mary section in both the villages has been neglected thus far by the concerned authority by not deploying adequate teachers, which it said was another factor for students not acquiring quality education thereby resulting in nil result so far.

NEW DELHI, AUG 27 (PTI): The Twitter spat be tween Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his As sam counterpart stretched on to Saturday with the AAP chief asking Himanta Biswa Sarma when should he come to see the schools of the northeastern state. The argument between the two leaders in the virtual space began after Kejriwal had on Wednesday tweeted that a closure of schools is not a solution and there is a need to open more schools across the country, and shared a link to a news report claiming a “closure” of some schools in Assam. Both Kejriwal and Sar ma have exchanged several virtual verbal volleys in the past three days. On Saturday, the AAP supremo tweeted in Hindi, “There is a saying we have -- If someone asks ‘When should I come’ and they say ‘Come whenever you can’, then it means ‘Don’t come ever’. I had asked you -‘When should I come to see your government schools’, you didn’t tell me. Tell me, when should I come, only then I can come.” His fresh tweet came in response to the remarks made by Sarma on Friday on the microblogging site. In a series of tweets, he had shared some of the differences between Delhi and Assam, mocking Ke jriwal.“Dear @ArvindKejri wal Ji, Your ignorance is painful. Let me help you. Assam is 50 times bigger than Delhi! Our 44521 govt schools teach 65 lakh stu dents - against your 1000+ odd schools. Our army of dedicated teachers number 2+ lakh; Midday meal work ers 1.18 lakh. Fathom it?” he tweeted.Inanother tweet, Sar ma said, “And yes, when you’re in Assam, which you so desperately wish to, I will take you to our Medical Col leges, 1000 times better than your Mohalla Clinic. Also meet our bright Govt school teachers and students.” He added in Hindi “quit both ering about making India no.1, Modiji is doing that”. Sarma had taken to Twitter on Thursday to lash out at Kejriwal over the amalgamation of schools and asked him to “do his homework” before com menting.“Dear @Arvind Kejriwal Ji-as usual you commented on something without any homework! Since my days as Education Minister till now, please note, the Assam government has established/taken over 8,610 new schools,” he had tweeted.Hehad also asked how many schools did the Delhi government start in the last sevenTheyears.Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief had responded to Sarma’s tweet on Friday. “Oh, it seems you took offence. My intention was not to point out your faults. All of us are one country. We have to learn from each other, then only India will become the number one country,” Kejriwal said in a tweet in Hindi.

AMSU president Hao bijam Challamba claimed that Manipur had produced food grains enough to feed its population until the erst while Kingdom was merged to Indian union. It was after the merger with the Indian union that Manipur became dependent on others, he said, express ing scepticism that there was a hidden policy to create artificial food scarcity in the state. He said non-availabil ity of fertilizers, particularly Urea during the peak season of paddy crop and failure of the paddy crops due to water scarcity, which farm ers are facing today was not a newTheone.AMSU president alleged that though these problems were a regular feature in the last few years, the state government did not come with a concrete long term plan to ease the problem.Instead of addressing the plights of the farmers, MLAs continued politics with the rice the Centre pro vided at Rs three a kg under National Food Security Act (NFSA), he added. “This is nothing but to create a sense that Manipur cannot attain self-sufficiency and have to remain depen dent on others,” the AMSU president said. The current artificial fertilizers scarcity being faced by the farmers of the state appeared to be an intentional one, he doubted. If the government was committed to making the state self-sufficient in food production, a concrete long term policy to ease the prob lems facing the farmers would have been imple mented, he said. Other yesteryear lead ers of the AMSU and CSOs echoed the same and said that the way the government treated the farmers made themIfinefficient.thepresent govern ment was sincere enough to get rid of food scarcity in the state, the people in governance should not delay in addressing the plights of the farmers, they added. All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) which was founded as fallout of the 1965 incidents has been ob serving the day as “Hunger Marchers’ Day” every year to remember the sacrifice made by the three students, Nabakumar, Chaobhal and Pramodini Devi and a driver of the AIR, Imphal Nila mani. The four were slain by police and security forces that fired gunshots towards students were agitating against artificial food scar city allegedly created by over export of rice of the state outside the Hundredsstate.of students from various schools and colleges who converged in Imphal’s Pishum Ch inga to pay floral tributes to the slain students also participated in the rally that marched on the streets in Imphal. The formal observance function began with the hoisting of the flag of the students’ body by its presi dent Haobijam Challamba at the student martyrs’ complex at Pishum Chin gamacha.

BENGALURU, AUG 27 (PTI): Rahul Gandhi would be pursued to return as Con gress President as there is none in the party other than him who has a pan-India ap peal, veteran leader M Mal likarjun Kharge has said. The Leader of Oppo sition in the Rajya Sabha said anyone aspiring to lead the party should be known throughout the country and enjoy support from Kan yakumari to Kashmir and West Bengal to Gujarat. “He should be wellrecognised, accepted man to the entire Congress party”, Kharge told PTI here on Friday. “So, no body is there (in the party with such a stature). He recalled that all senior leaders had “forced” Sonia Gandhi to join and work for the party, and had requested Rahul Gandhi to “come and fight”. “You tell me the al ternative. Who is there? (in the party other than Rahul Gandhi)”, Kharge asked. BENGALURU, AUG 27 (PTI): Veteran BJP leader B S Yediyurappa on Sat urday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has agreed to his request of visiting Karnataka, where the party is aiming to come back to power, at least once a month, in the run-up to the 2023 Assembly polls. The former Chief Min ister who was in New Delhi on Friday to meet the party’s central leadership said, no force can stop the BJP from coming back to power in Karnataka. “I had a de tailed discussion with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party national President J P Nadda. They tried to know about the political situation in Karnataka. I have re quested the Prime Minister to frequently visit the state and have assured him that the BJP will win more than 140 seats (out of the to tal 224) and come back to power,” Yediyurappa said. The unfathomable agony of being Bilkis Bano

Viketo Nihokhe Sumi Purana Bazar, viketo06@gmail.comDimapur

In self-destruct mode India’s oldest and globally well-known political party– the Indian National Congress (INC)- has been on downslide since 2012 but became consistent since 2014 after the party seemed to be in free fall as the leadership went into a coma. Many renowned political commentators and veteran politicians have been giving valuable inputs on what is happening within the Congress after its disastrous defeat in 2014 and repeated by another devastating blow in 2019. Political analysts have also been commenting on the factors that had led Congress to face a string of defeats in assembly and parliamentary elections and the contributory factors. Congress was doing fine when Sonia Gandhi led the party organization with consensus through consultations. However, once she decided to hand over the baton to her son Rahul, the rot set in at a faster rate. Ghulam Nabi Azad, one of seniormost Congress leaders since Nehru, who rose through the ranks under Indira Gandhi and Rajiv and also under Dr. Manmohan Singh, has decided to get off the bus that is hurtling towards the abyss. Many other leaders of the Congress before Azad such as Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh, Sunil Jakhar, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sushmita Dev, party spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill Congress media in-charge, Haryana leader Kuldip Bishnoi, Kerala Congress leader Vijayan Thomas also quit. Earlier in 2019 Tom Vadakkan Congress spokesperson also joined BJP. Earlier this year in May, senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal, a prominent Supreme Court lawyer who fought cases for the party resigned from the party. RPN Singh, star campaigner for Uttar Pradesh resigned as he was ignored by Priyanka Vadra. Former Union Law Minister Ashwani Kumar resigned in February after giving 46 years of service to the party. Back in May, Gujarat Patidar leader Hardik Patel who was foisted to the party by Rahul, resigned. Former Goa Chief Minister Luizinho Falerio resigned in December 2021 and joined TMC. Other notable Congress leaders who left the party include- veteran Congress leader PC Chacko, UPCC chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi (2016), former Uttarakhand chief minister Vijay Bahuguna (2016), former Chhattisgarh chief minister Ajit Jogi (2016), Tripura leader Sudip Roy Barman (2016) and Uttarakhand leader Harak Singh Rawat (2016). Veteran Assam Congress leader Bhubaneswar Kalita and Assam Congress chief Ripun Bora also resigned. In Maharashtra, Narayan Rane, and Priyanka Chaturvedi joined BJP. Azad in his resignation letter, blamed Sonia for over turning a blind eye on every costly mistake by her son Rahul. He led the Congress to its epic disaster in 2014 but was rewarded when he as eventually elected unopposed as president in 2017. After leading the party to another humiliating defeat in May 2019, Rahul resigned in a huff in July 2019 but still continues to call the shots through remote control. For the Congress, the Gandhis are a symbolic link with the past but the family needs to play a more positive role as guardians instead of trying to run the party as a family firm. Even if a party president is elected, as Azad predicted, that the next president will only be a family puppet. The Congress has to come out of the shadows of the Gandhis but this can happen only if the family courtiers and sycophants are shown their place. But this is easier said than done and therefore, the Congress party will continue to be irrelevant till it is reduced to a small regional party or eventually fulfills BJP’s vow of CongressMukht Bharat. Quotes I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best. Living Your Theology Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you… —John 12:35 Beware of not acting upon what you see in your moments on the mountaintop with God. If you do not obey the light, it will turn into darkness. “If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” (Matthew 6:23). The moment you forsake the matter of sanctification or neglect anything else on which God has given you His light, your spiritual life begins to disintegrate within you. Continually bring the truth out into your real life, working it out into every area, or else even the light that you possess will itself prove to be a curse. The most difficult person to deal with is the one who has the prideful self-satisfaction of a past experience, but is not working that experience out in his everyday life. If you say you are sanctified, show it. The experience must be so genuine that it shows in your life. Beware of any belief that makes you self-indulgent or self-gratifying; that belief came from the pit of hell itself, regardless of how beautiful it may sound. Your theology must work itself out, exhibiting itself in your most common everyday relationships. Our Lord said, “…unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:20). In other words, you must be more moral than the most moral person you know. You may know all about the doctrine of sanctification, but are you working it out in the everyday issues of your life? Every detail of your life, whether physical, moral, or spiritual, is to be judged and measured by the standard of the atonement by the Cross of Christ.

S ince I.S.B.T. (Inter State Bus Terminal) was built and stationed in Purana Bazar, Sir, I fear no Deputy Commissioners posted in Dimapur has ever graced their presence to even glance or peer around to know the mechanism deployed to service. I presume they felt no subjection nor any accountability in their job’s prospect, but I deem that they were bound by directive principle to know the functioning aspects of all major bodies under their province, on their fingertips. It is unconventional, Sir, to invite a District Head to look into the conditions of certain public stations through “public column” in local newspaper, but Sir, previous channels which were considered customary had futile outcome. In addition, I’ve expected law enforcers to right this infringing nuisance act of insubordination, but none are even intrigued. And henceforth, this unorthodox. Sir, through this reputed column, I am inclined to inform the abusive natures the highway to I.S.B.T. has been enduring under the unmindful Authority and as a result, it has become one of the worst impediment to the passengers commuting to bus station, and even worst for the people living in these areas who have to commute everyday through this discarded highway, full of upheavals.Sir,allow me to take you in this sojourn of bumpy corrugated ride, bit-by-bit. To begin, unlike I.S.B.T.s in other plain states, there is no definiteforked road that leads to the station from the highway. After you are eventually directed by helpful standbys, you come across potholes that are filled with blackish stagnant of human waste, channeled down from the petrol station that lies along the highway. The petrol station-master has taken the privilege to consider I.S.B.T highway for dumping ground of human’s urine and fecal matters. Since the pump’s public toilet is particularly and conveniently located where drivers of various public lorries assemble to procure business, also, since it is essentially located along NH29 for all people to utilize these units, station highway is always stagnant throughout the year with humanThenwastes.you shall come across a reinforced concrete drainage pipe of abnormal size - half buried under and half above the road. The outcome is ever presence of puddle ponds during rainy seasons. Whoever laid this pipe had the presence of mind to cover it with sand gravel, the upper half portion of the pipe that was visible to commuters’ naked eyes, hoping commuters are insane to notice his shoddy job. And then, you will come across series of buildingsand dealers stretching along the highway winding for I.S.B.T. This is absolutely absurd, and I don’t know whoever issued permits to these sand-dealers, enabling them to set up shops at the most inappropriate location, despite of ill assured consequences they could foresee. I cannot postulate if the actions of these dealers are the consequences of anarchy or if they are fearless rogues who heed no jurisdiction. I am haplessly biased to assume that no actions of penalty have been imposed since these acts haven’t come across our Administration’ sight. I prefer not to theorize the culpability is not the other way around.Sir,the presence of this sand dealers stocking sand along the road have been a total menace to the locals and passengers alike. Dissimilar to sand stockists along NH29, there is no drainage system that separates the sand stocks from the highway; and no settled open area between the highway and sand stocks. The stocks have literally covered one-third area of the highway. The aftereffect of this is, the metalled highway now lies few feet under the sand. It is a foregone truth that when you stock mountains of sands along the road without dividers, any natural effects of wind or rain coupled with gravity will bring down sands to lower altitudes. This is the aftermath here Sir. I.S.B.T Highway has become loading ground for these orderrevImuddyafrontmonsoonsuchbutallowanIstuckcarsrelativelymonsoons,depictunprovisionedsand-dealers.abusedpublicsincedrivepropertiessafeguardingareponderlorries.labourersroad,parkedabnormalsand-dealers.noncompliantItisnolongertoseeheavytrucksinthemiddleofthehorizontallywhileloadsandsontoIwonderifpeoplewhethertheregovernmentofficialspublicwhenevertheythroughthissectiontheywitnesshowroadisrampantlybythesewaywardTheseactssimplyandspellanarchy.Duringheavytheroadbecomesimpassableforcityastheytendtogetinthismuddyroad.haveencounteredsuchincidenttwice.Pleasemetorelateasatiricalamorbidironyofoneincident.Onceonamorning,mycar’swheelcouldn’tgettractiononknee-deephighway,andsohadtobackmycarandittothemaximumintoreachtheother end. Once I had crossed the hurdle, I stepped down from my car and barked at those dealers how they had turned a perfectly metalled road into a disaster and told them to rectify it. Few hours later, I found them dumping freshly dug earthly soil from dumper trucks and leveling it with backhoe. They didn’t realise that they were only compounding the issue. Poor salesmen wallas! They know that they don’t have a defining solution and all they can do is pour more oil into burning flames to assuage the irks of commuters. Now,inorder to know how deep the original road lies, you have to dig at least two feet below. Sir, I will not be able to let you know the severity of it through mental drawings unless you would kindly take the initiative to practically drive by once during dry day and another on incessant monsoon day. Sir, I believe, after your insightful inspection, that you’d comply if I plea to you to kindly shut down these sand-dealers and accommodate them along NH29 where all the sanddealers are functioning within the border of the law. And Sir, the once performing drainage system is at absolute loss. The drainage system that was implemented is now completely underground, covered in dunes of sand, responsible by defaulters. So I pray to you to kindly direct the responsible departments to avail much neededThisamenity.isnot an article to manifest the ignorance of past HODs of Dimapur district departments, Sir, but it is a humble imploration from a citizen, on behalf of the general population, to right what has been ignored or unknown by your predecessors, which I may term as genuine oversight. “It’s an emphatic truth that when an investigative person wants to substantiate if the government officials of any particular towns or cities are ardently overseeing public properties, often, his primary and foremost expedition is to inspect major public service stations such as bus stations, public hospitals, public schools and ensure that public roads are not encroached, inorder to get the gist.” I am truly remorseful, in advance, Sir, that my lines weight more towards discord, not remedied by former officials. Also, I would like to thank you, beforehand for being conscientious Head, obliging to the cries of the public in your province for legitimate reforms.

on ‘appropriate remedial measures’, the bench shot back saying, “Do you seriously think Parliament will debate regulating freebies? Which political party will debate this issue? No party will agree on curbs on freebies ahead of polls. Each of them wants it.” The Prime Minister’s remark on the ‘revadi culture’ had seemingly boomeranged. Of course, every party is going to tell the committee, “What they give are freebies, what we offer are not.” It will by no means be easy for the committee— which is likely to have representatives of the NITI Aayog, the RBI, the yet-tobe-constituted 16th Finance Commission, the Election Commission and political parties—to define freebies. While BJP might describe an opposition-ruled state’s freebies as a “drain” on its finances, the state might well defend it as legitimate welfare initiatives and an investment for the future. States will also assert their sovereign power to decide how much to spend and where besides deciding what is good or bad for its people. They will also certainly present a long list of freebies offered by the BJP and the Prime Minister himself. The line between welfare needs and poll sops has always been thin. It is equally certain that some members on the committee, economists and bankers, will offer a different view, driven by concerns on the impact of freebies on public finances and budget deficits. Making welfare schemes being the sole prerogative of elected governments, they can scarcely be told though which of the schemes they should drop. Experts might point to the poor state of finances of states and warn that they might find it difficult to sustain the schemes or repay their debts. But they can hardly ask states to drop welfare schemes which in their view might be wasteful. Time alone can be the arbiter in theseThecases. committee might end up offering broad guidelines on how to regulate spending by the central and state governments. A number of such guidelines already exist to enforce financial discipline. Some of these guidelines, such as Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management, are backed by laws. The SC committee might suggest some more ways to strengthen fiscal prudence.Atthe end of the committee’s exertions, therefore, we might be back to square one with economists, public finance experts and the RBI expressing fears of a “fiscal disaster” and elected governments arguing that they know best how to look after their people and manage their finances. Indeed, Tamil Nadu’s articulate and outspoken finance minister has pointed out that fiscal deficit in his state is far below the deficit of the Union government. The truth is that the revadi culture is unlikely to end anytime soon. The reason is not far to seek. It’s just that political parties are reluctant or unable to strike at the root of the problem. There are two sets of actors in the revadi culture: political parties and the people. Political parties distribute revadi to get votes of the targeted population. But why are people willing to barter their freedom of political choice for freebies? It is largely because they desperately need the freebies. Most people do not have a decent enough income to meet the needs of their families; or save enough for the future and live with dignity and with adequate financial security. Do upper and middle classes want freebies? No. They will undoubtedly feel insulted by the remotest suggestion of freebies. The revadi culture exists among the poor because poverty is widespread and economic disparities are increasing. No national employment policy appears to be addressing the highest unemployment rate in the last 45 years. In June 2022, as many as 44% of youth (20-24 age group) in the country were jobless. In number, that would mean at least 150 million youths. About 10 million workers who were laid off by the manufacturing sector during the pandemic have not been taken back. As many as 8 million people engaged in non-farm sectors lost their jobs in June and July 2022. Out of 220 million candidates who applied for central government jobs in the past eight years, only 722,000 or one per cent of the applicants got jobs. Can jobless and poor Indians be faulted for accepting freebies in lieu of their preciousRevadivotes?seeking is not limited to the jobless, though. Even those who have jobs desperately seek revadis. Why? The conventional wisdom is that if surplus labour moved from agriculture to non-farm employment, it would ensure economic growth, higher wages and better living conditions for the workers. But although there has been a shift from agriculture and migration of villagers to urban centres and despite economic growth, wages and living conditions of workers have not improved. Most of the urban workers (for example, gig workers) have casual, low-wage jobs, with no paid leave, medical reimbursement, social security, accident insurance, provident fund or pension. Can we fault them for trading their votes for revadis?Theonus for ending the ‘revadi culture’, therefore, lies on the Prime Minister, the Union government and all political parties and state governments. They need to ask why the lives of people do not show much improvement, the distress more in some states than others, despite all the tall claims, ambitious roadmaps and public expenditure. Unless a decent income is assured for all, they have little moral right to lecture people on freebies. The political tug-of-war over freebies is disingenuous

A s details are emerging about the fear gripping Bilkis Bano’s entire family after the release of her rapists, a strange irony hits: This hapless rape victim and her husband, children and relatives have been living in fear and moving from one place to another for the last twenty years, whereas the convicted rapists and murderers are getting garlanded by Hindutva outfits as though they have indulged in some heroic deed! Aren’t rape and murder heinous crimes? The fact is, Bilkis Bano has been terrorised by her tormentors. She was gang raped, her three-year-old daughter was killed by the rioters, seven of her relatives were also killed. To top it all, she and her family have been living in fear all these years. In fact, her tormentors ought to be booked under any of the terror acts, because she has been terrorised all through, all these twentyWeyears.must hang our heads in shame, for here is this woman who has suffered all these years and even now she and her family are getting hounded. If the political bigwigs of the country are being provided with security, why shouldn’t this hapless citizen, Bilkis Bano and the surviving members of her family? A connected reality Isn’t it time to document details of hundreds of women and their families who have been targeted and assaulted in Gujarat? Even today, the very word ‘Gujarat’ drags along images and details of the affected, either during the 2002 pogrom or even yearsForafter.the survivors of the riots, the trauma is still going on. Many have been living in isolation, cut off and bruised to the extent that they have lost all hope. Their lives have been completely destroyed and their emotions trampled upon.In fact, whilst keying in, I’m reminded of Ishrat Jahan, the 19-year-old college student who was killed in an ‘encounter’, in 2004, on a road between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar in Gujarat, allegedly by the officers of the Ahmedabad Police Crime Branch led by D.G. Vanzara. Some years back, I had got in touch with Ishrat’s younger sister Musarrat Jahan and her mother Shamima, for a feature I was doing for Women’s Feature Service. Their voice carried strains of intense pain. It was more than apparent that this family had not recovered from the tragedy. And when I’d asked Musarrat whether there’d been any change in the realities they live with, she told me, “Ever since Ishrat’s killing, we have kept to ourselves and seldom move out. To this day we are wary of stepping out. Difficult for us to survive. I gave up studies… Forget about books and studies, even running the kitchen gets very difficult. Ishrat was the sole earning member of the family. After the death of our father in 2002 because of a brain tumour, the responsibility of the family fell on the eldest of the seven siblings, Ishrat. She took up part-time jobs so that we could survive. After her death, the situation has only been worsening for us. We have been suffering on all possible fronts; emotionally, socially, financially…can’t tell you our pain. We just keep to ourselves. We are fearful and somehow surviving.” For many, the very word ‘Gujarat’ drags along faces of all those sitting marginalised and bruised and at the mercy of the political rulers. To this day dark images stand out. There’s been no closure. There can’t be, with the tormentors, and culprits roaming aboutManyfreely.have given up all hope. Several want to fight for justice. I recall the words of Zakia Jafri, “I’m going to carry on this fight for justice, not just for myself but for all those killed in Gujarat... My husband, Ahsan Jafri, fought valiantly till he was killed by the Hindutva rioters. But till the end he did not give up. Like Hazrat Imam Hussain and his companions were martyred during the battle of Karbala, hundreds of innocent children and women and men were killed in that Gujarat pogrom.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said the Narendra Modi government took all efforts to strengthen probe agencies such as the NIA and anti-terror laws in line with its policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism. The National Inves tigation Agency will have branches in all the states by May 2024, he said. The home minister was speaking at the inaugu ration of the office building of the NIA’s Raipur branch in Atal Nagar area of Nava Raipur.“The Modi govern ment has adopted zero tol erance policy against Left Wing Extremism, terrorism and other related crimes including fake currency and narcotics, and therefore we left no stone unturned to strengthen the NIA,” he said. The BJP-led Union government also strength ened anti-terror laws, shared terrorism-related inputs with state governments irre spective of the party ruling in a state, strengthened antiterror investigation agencies and increased conviction rate in such crimes, Shah added.“In line with this (poli cy), our government worked towards strengthening the NIA. The government has tried to make Kashmir ter ror-free ever since it came to power, the Union minister said. “Peace is being wit nessed in Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 and today our agencies have succeeded in check ing terror activities there. It became possible because the NIA took stringent action against those involved in terror funding in 2018, 2019 and 2020.Atotal of 105 cases (of terror funding) were regis tered and 876 persons were arrested and in 94 cases charge sheets have been filed,” he added. The government has also pledged to uproot the Left Wing Extremism which is now restricted to only a few districts in the country, Shah claimed. “Earlier LWE’s influ ence was spread to 120 districts but it has now shrunk to only 46 districts. In Chhattisgarh there are some districts that are still struggling with the menace but I firmly believe that the Central and state govern ments will jointly eliminate it,” he said.

The main reason behind this fall is dip in foreign current as sets which the RBI has been using in forex market to cushion the fall in rupee. Since the start of this year, the geopolitical un certainities and back to back rate hikes by the Fed have led to weakening of emerging market curren cies including INR,” said Ritika Chhabra, Econo mist and Quant Analyst, Prabhudas Lilladher. In the week prior, during the week ending August 12, the country’s foreign exchange reserves had declined by $2.238 to $570.74 billion. The reserve had declined every single week barring the increase in the last week of July. It has fallen for 20 of the 26 weeks since Rus sia invaded Ukraine in late February. The drop in the re serves during the week ended August 19 was due to a fall in the Foreign Cur rency Assets (FCA) and the gold reserves, as per the Weekly Statistical Supple ment released by RBI on Friday.

The Supreme Court, on Rad heshyam Shah’s plea, also directed that the application for premature release be considered by the Gujarat government within two months, and in terms of its policy dated July 9, 1992, it said. “We are puzzled about why the Su preme Court saw the matter as so urgent that a decision had to be taken within two months, as also by the Supreme Court ordering that the case should be examined as per Gujarat’s 1992 remis sion policy and not its current one,” the letter“Insaid.view of these glaring devia tions from established law, departure from government policy and propriety, and the chilling impact that this release will have, not just on Bilkis Bano and her family and supporters, but also on the safety of all women in India, espe cially those who belong to minority and vulnerable communities, we urge you to rescind the order of remission passed by the Gujarat government and send the 11 persons convicted of gangrape and murder back to jail to serve out their life sentence,” they wrote.

It is the result of disagreements between followers of influential Shiite cleric Muqtada alSadr and rival Iran-backed groups since last year’s parliamentary elections. Al-Sadr won the largest share of seats in the October elections but failed to form a majority government, leading to what has become one of the worst political crises in Iraq in recent years. His bloc later resigned from parliament and his supporters last month stormed the parliament building in Baghdad. AlSadr has demanded that parliament be dissolved and early elections held. “This political crisis threatens the security achievements and the nation’s stability,” alKadhimi said in a speech marking Islamic Day of Combatting Violence against Women in Baghdad. “Now, the solution is for all political parties to make concessions for the interests of Iraq and Iraqis,” said theexplosionspartswhenonroadsideandhittingtomilitantsingroupsincewitnessedinvaluable”andheralliesgroupsthemthenproteststoSadrwillshootingsthatfindpartyseniorcalledal-Kadhimi.Lastweek,al-Kadhimiforameetingofpoliticalleadersandrepresentativestoasolution.Hewarnedif“fightingerupts,thewillnotstopandremainforyears.”Earlierthismonth,al-calledonhisfollowersbereadytoholdmassivealloverIraqbutindefinitelypostponedafterIran-backedcalledforsimilarthesameday,sayingwantstopreservepeacethat“Iraqibloodistohim.IraqhasrelativestabilitytheIslamicStatewaslargelydefeatedthecountryin2017.Buthavecontinuedwageattacks,frequentlysecurityforcesmilitarytargetswithbombsandfiringconvoysorcheckpoints.DuringtheriseofIS,itcontrolledlargeofIraq,deadlywerecommoninoil-richcountry.

WASHINGTON, AUG 27 (IANS: Former US President Donald Trump took an unpredictable victory lap over a heavily redacted affidavit that revealed the probable cause behind the search warrant served at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida earlier this month. On Friday, Trump took to TruthSocial, his social media app, to ostensibly rejoice that the document was “heavily redacted” before pointing out that “nothing mentioned on ‘nuclear’” and a “total public relations subterfuge by the FBI and DOJ”. He also condemned magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart, who ordered the redacted affidavit, saying he should “never have allowed the break-in of my home”. Of course, no “breakin” was allowed, but rather a search warrant to obtain classified information, possession of which would be a felony offence under a law that the former President had signed in 2018. “He (Judge Reinhart) recused himself two months ago from one of my cases based on his animosity and hatred of your favourite President, me. What changed? Why hasn’t he recused himself in this case? Obama must be very proud of him right now,” Trump added.Multiple media reports in the US were agog with his reaction and outbursts of his supporters led by Fox News. Trump’s reaction appeared to be nothing more than another page from the ‘best defence is a good offence’ playbook. President Volodomyr Zelenskyy said it was essential for International Atomic Energy Agency representatives to get to the plant as soon as possible and to help keep it “under permanent Ukrainian control.”“The situation remains precarious and dangerous,” Zelenskyy said in latest nightly address. “Any repetition of (Thursday’s) events, i.e., any disconnection of the station from the grid or any actions by Russia that could trigger the shut down of the reactors, will once again put the station one step away from Thedisaster.”deputy head of Russia’s delegation said the conference became “a political hostage” to countries that were trying “to settle scores with Russia by raising issues that are not directly related to the treaty.”The British government said Saturday that it was giving Ukraine underwater drones and training sailors to use them to clear mines from the ravaged country’s coastline. Mines laid in the Black Sea during the war have hampered seaborne exports of Ukrainian grain to world markets, although an agreement reached in July has allowed shipments to resume along a single corridor.More than 1 million metric tons of Ukrainian foodstuffs have been shipped since the start of August under the Black Sea grain deal, the United Nations said ElsewhereSaturday.inUkraine, one person was killed and another wounded in Russian firing in the Mykolaiv region, local government officials said. PRAGUE, AUG 27 (IANS): Both chambers of the Czech Parliament have given their approval to NATO membership for Finland and Sweden, the most significant expansion of the Western defence alliance in years. The Chamber of Deputies voted nearly unanimously to endorse the accession of the two Nordic countries in an overnight session that ended early Saturday, reports dpa news agency. The Senate voted in favour earlier this month. The last step for ratification in the Czech Republic is the signature of President Milos Zeman. The 77-year-old supports the enlargement plans, according to his spokesman.Finland and Sweden declined to seek NATO membership for decades. But Russia’s invasion of Ukraine changed the political calculus as large majorities in both countries saw it as critical to their security. All 30 current NATO member states must ratify the proposed additions. Including the Czech Republic, two dozen have given the go-ahead so far.
