‘Migratory parties’ will contest election and vanish, says Rio

DIMAPUR, FEB 18

(NPN): State chief minister Neiphiu Rio on Saturday took a swipe at new political parties that were in the fray for the ensuing assembly election, saying they were “migratory parties” entering the state from outside just to contest election, but would vanish later.

Rio’s charge directed at the sudden appearance then disappearance of the plethora of political parties was the same voiced out by then chief minister Dr. S.C. Jamir.

Campaigning for NDPP candidate for 3 Dimapur III assembly constituency Hekani Jakhalu at Doyapur Ground on Saturday, Rio has, however, expressed confidence that

NDPP-BJP alliance will form the next government and therefore urged all to vote for the right candidate.

He reiterated that proposal to continue with 40:20 seat sharing alliance between BJP and NDPP was made by BJP considering NDPP was a regional party and to respect the sentiments of Christian-majority state.

NBCC asks MoS Barla not to use religion for political gain

DIMAPUR, FEB 18 (NPN): Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) and the Ao Baptist Arogo Mungdang (ABAM) have expressed serious concern over the usage of sacred and spiritual phrases/slogans during election campaigns.

Putting John Barla (union minister of state for minorities) under scanner, NBCC general secretary Rev. Dr. Zelhou Keyho said when Christians in India are being persecuted, accused of illegal conversion, slapped with anti-conversion bill, churches and its institutions demolished, “comes a politician with the political party slogan

KPC demands clarification from State BJP

DIMAPUR, FEB 18

(NPN): Kohima Press Club (KPC) has sought clarification from the State BJP leadership over the usage of “uncouth language and display of total disregard for journalists” by the party’s media cell convenor.

In a letter to the State BJP president, KPC president Alice Yhoshü pointed out that the media fraternity were taken aback by the way the convenor had reacted to their suggestions (Press 4BJP Nagaland’ WhatsApp group) for the party to provide factually correct information before re-leasing it to the media.

to play the religious card”.

Seemingly unconvinced by Barla’s mission of acting as a bridge representing Christians in the Modi government, Keyho asked why has he (Barla) not stood for protection of minorities and innocents harassed and abused ? NBCC also said Barla’s “silence in parliament” and the position as minister of state for defending and safeguarding minorities has caused much harm.

Keyho further asked Barla if he was aware that India has been listed as the “10th most dangerous country to live in for Christians?”

CynicalabuseofChristianfaith:ABAM

Ao Baptist Arogo Mungdang (ABAM) has taken exception to what it described as “cynical abuse of Christian faith and belief by the party-political campaigners” in recent week.

Referring to the Christian chant during campaign ABAM executive secretary Rev. Dr. Mar Pongener said it was yet another deploring and deliberate attempt to sabotage the identity of Christian community in Nagaland. He reminded that ‘Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!’ is a Christian sacred expression meant for the reaffirmation and commitment with awe and rever-

ence. He resented that while trying to syncretize it with “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” was purely communal as it forces certain mythological idea of motherland Bharat being Devi, a Hindu deity.

While not denying that ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ may suit a particular faith and religious philosophy but not all, Dr. Pongener said uttering both phrases at a time for one’s own political gain was disgraceful. ABAM, therefore, urged upon every rightthinking citizen to refrain from conforming to political inducement, saying it has the potent to mislead any religious faith community.

BJP clarifies on use of religious slogans

The manifesto was released by NDPP president Chingwang Konyak and chief minister Neiphiu Rio in the presence of party leaders. In a statement, NDPP media and communication said that the manifesto was the result of collection of statistics and intensive research by the party members and leaders, committed to building a better future for the people of Nagaland.

NDPP said that the manifesto was also a reflection of the core values of democracy, progress, and inclusivity. “It outlines our vision for the state of Nagaland and presents a clear plan of action to make Nagaland a state of excellence,” NDPP stated.

(NPN): Reacting to chief minister Neiphiu Rio statement that the Naga political issue would be his government’s “top priority” and continue to be the core issue in the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA), All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary incharge of communications and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh demanded to know from chief minister Neiphiu Rio and Prime Minister Narendra Modi what prevented a political solution in the 13th NLA.

Terming Rio’s statement as “irresponsible”, Ramesh asked whether they thought that 13 was an unlucky number and postponed it to 14? He said “BJP’s slogan was ‘election for solution’, whereas they only want to create more

and more confusion. I don’t think they want a solution, because the type of majority they have had, solution would have been a reality if their intention was in the right place. They are interested in postponing and not clarifying,” he stated.

While pointing out that the Framework Agreement was signed in 2015 and election held in 2018 under the slogan ‘election for solution’, he wondered why the people were still talking of solution in 2023.

Ramesh said that

Prime Minister Modi, union home minister Amit Shah and chief minister Rio were only interested in postponing and not interested in clarifying and getting things done. “Sadly, in India politics, party commitment does not mean much,” he said and noted that there was no shortage of “Judases” in Nagal politics. Ramesh further asked Modi and Amit Shah to assure the people that they will not touch the Article 371 (A), rather implement Article 371 (A) in letter and spirit.

Pointing out that during the Congress regime several accords and agreements were signed like the Mizo Accord, Assam Accord, Tripura and Bodo Accord etc. which were made known to the public, Ramesh, however, said that the details of the

(NPN): A day after the Dimapur Area Ao Baptist Pastors Fellowship (DAABPF) had objected to BJP using religious/sacred phrase and shouting slogans like “Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!” during their election campaign, the State BJP clarified that it was not done with any

malicious intent or to gain political mileage.

Addressing the media in the presence of BJP national spokesperson and i/c Nagaland, Nalin Kohli, state BJP media cell convener Sapralu Nyekha said that the issue created a hue and cry after a video went viral on social media where union minister of state for Minority Affairs John Barla

was seen shouting “Praise the Lord! Hallelujah!” during an election campaign for BJP candidate and state party president Temjen Imna Along at Aosenden village under Alongtaki constituency on February 16. She said that Barla, who is a devout Christian, was a pastor before joining politics and becoming a union minister. Though it was his prerogative, Sapralu said Barla “loves to carry forward his faith in our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ. And when he feels in his heart to call on the name of God and worship Him wherever he is, in whatever political event or any other events that he attends, it is his liberty to do so as a good Christian.”

Manik Saha blames CPI-M for election violence in Tripura

AGARTALA, FEB 18 (AGENCIES): The chief minister of Tripura in the last Bharatiya Janata Party government Manik Saha said that the Indian National Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) tried to instigate the workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party in a bid to create problems during the hours of polling in his state. Voting had taken place in the state of Tripura on Thursday for the 60-member state assembly, reports The Sentinel Assam.

The Election Day was mostly peaceful this year in the state of Tripura with reports of sporadic violence coming from some locations of the state Manik Saha had mentioned that his government had created a flow of change and peace in the

state and that was clearly visible in this election. He mentioned that the new players in this election, the TIPRA Motha have also been following the footsteps of the Congress and the CPIM in the state in terms of the political atmosphere.

“In the history of Tripura, this was the first election that was held without any violence and rigging. It was a peaceful election. In the last 35 years of CPIM and Congress rule they used

scientific rigging to increase the voting turnout. Without rigging the election held peacefully except for some stray incidents”, said the doctor-turned-politician Manik Saha.

According to the BJP leader, the public of the state wants peace and safety while the CPIM and the Congress were trying to disrupt the peaceful polling process. He also reiterated his confidence in a comfortable win in the upcoming elections with the domination of even more seats than in the previous elections.

He went on to add that the coalition between Congress and CPIM has in fact helped the BJP in the election and that the regional TIPRA Motha will not hinder the Bharatiya Janata Party’s win in any way.

The Indian National Army (INA) headquarters complex that stands today, embodies the commitment of the government of Manipur to give fitting tribute to the brave hearts of INA under Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

The complex symbolizes the spirit and the role played by the Indian National Army in India’s Freedom Movement. It was on 14th April 1944, that the flag of the INA, carrying yellow, white and green stripes with the image of springing tiger in the middle, was for the second time hoisted here on Indian soil at Moirang, about 45 kilometres from Imphal, the capital of Manipur. The old house standing in the complex was used by the INA as its office.

Later, the delegates visited the Loktak Lake, where they enjoyed a boat ride. They also planted trees at the Sangai Ethnic Park and witnessed traditional attire and dances of different communities of the state.

The delegates will visit Ema Market, the largest all women market in Asia and the historical Kangla Fort before leaving Imphal tomorrow.

MDA allies blaming each other makes no sense: Congress’ Billykid Sangma

has only been about corruption,” stated Billy.

The Congressman stated that the state has witnessed corruption in coal, education, and COVID among others that the government has to answer for.

People are fed up with this government and want change, felt Billy, adding that the Congress was on the up and would be the biggest party in the state.

Billy added that the government had failed to address education issues at the primary level and this has caused a serious issue.

TURA, FEB 18 (AGENCIES): Congress candidate from North Tura, Billykid

A Sangma has expressed his anger at the BJP. NPP and UDP after three parties blamed each other over corruption in the run-up to the polls, reports East Mojo. “Turning on each other at this time when they were part of the same government and equally involved in corruption does not make sense. What stopped them from taking action when they knew corruption was taking place in the first place,” asked Billykid.

Billy is pitted against the NPP’s Thomas

Sangma, TMC’s Rupert Sangma, and his nephew Adamkid Sangma of the BJP. Confident of doing well, Billy felt that the real competition would come from the NPP as TMC votes were already divided. Adamkid had earlier tried for a TMC ticket before joining the BJP.

“This is the most corrupt government we have ever seen in the history of the state. There is a saying that ‘Never judge a book by its cover’. The NPP’s symbol is a book and people had hoped that they would do good work. However when you open the book and its pages, every chapter

“Primary schools are in bad shape as there are no facilities, teachers and infrastructure. The first thing would be to address this as his priority,” he said.

On his chances in the upcoming elections, Billy said he was confident of a win due to the positive feedback he was getting.

“I have changed my constituency from South to North Tura as most Maharis are here as well as family and friends. Their support for my campaign led me to believe that I will win. Overall in Garo Hills, we are looking good to win in 9 seats and are close in 3 more,” said Billy.

befooled everyone in M’laya in the last 5 years: Abhishek

SHILLONG, FEB 18 (PTI):

TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee Saturday said that the ruling National People’s Party and ally United Democratic Party in Meghalaya have befooled everyone in the state during the past five years.

Banerjee, who was addressing a poll rally at Mylliem in the outskirts of Shillong, urged the people to vote for Trinamool Congress in the February 27 Assembly election as by doing so they will help the north eastern state to reach greater heights and ensure that it is not deprived of its rightful dues.

“They (NPP & UDP) have had five years and they befooled all of you. This 27th (February) you should fool them. Pay them in their own coin,” he said.

TMC is the principal opposition this time and is contesting in 58 of the total 60 Assembly seats in

Meghalaya.

“Every vote for the ruling National Peoples’ Party (NPP) is a vote for BJP. Every vote for United Democratic Party (UDP) is a vote for the BJP. Keep this in mind,” he said, lashing out at the ruling alliance helmed by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.

The UDP is a major constituent of the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), which is in power in the northeastern state with support from BJP.

The TMC leader said it is important for everyone to come out and vote this time as it will “end” the misrule of the corrupt political parties.

“When you vote for TMC, you will vote to take Meghalaya to greater heights and that it is not deprived of its rightful dues. You should vote out the puppets. Vote for a true leader

Sonowal visits Jorhat bazaar, says govt to rehabilitate traders

GUWAHATI, FEB 18

(PTI): Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday visited the historic ‘Chowk Bazaar’ in Jorhat district where a massive fire gutted over 300 shops and announced that the government will rehabilitate the affected traders.

The Union Shipping, Ports and Waterways minister took stock of the situation along with Rajya Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, local BJP MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami and Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Pulak Mahanta.

“Our aim is to rehabilitate all the affected people.

I have already discussed the development this morning with Tasa, Goswami and the DC,” Sonowal told reporters at Jorhat.

The union minister further said that he will speak to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding rehabilitation of the victims and the Assam government will take necessary steps in this regard.

One of the shopkeepers appealed to Sonowal to make temporary arrange-

ments for them so that they can start their business as soon as possible.

“We are happy that the government is planning to construct a permanent building here. This is going to take a long time. If we do not get any space during the construction period, it will be difficult for our survival,” he added.

who will speak and work on your behalf,” he said.

Banerjee harped on the Mukroh firing in Meghalaya in November last year and said the Conrad Sangma government has not done anything for the victims.

“The Assam Police, who are the perpetrators of the crime, are roaming scot-free. The Meghalaya government has not issued notices to them. If such violence had happened in the interstate borders of West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would

have given the perpetrators a taste of their own medicine,” he said.

Five tribal villagers from Meghalaya were shot dead at Mukroh on November 22, 2022 by Assam Police after Assam forest guards intercepted a Meghalaya vehicle which they suspected to be carrying illegally felled timber. A forest guard from Assam was also killed in the incident.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had later claimed that the police firing in Mukroh was an act of self-defence and to protect government properties.

The TMC senior leader in his poll rally at Tura on February 16 alleged that Sangma did not take requisite action to ensure justice for those killed in the incident fearing action by central agencies on one pretext or another.

He also criticised Sangma for failing to get the Khasi and Garo languages included in the Eighth Schedule of Constitution.

“Have you seen the CM go and raise his voice for inclusion of the two languages? ... When Trinamool Congress forms the government in Meghalaya we will do whatever it takes, we will fight till the last of our blood to make sure Khasi and Garo languages are included,” Banerjee said.

Highlighting the 10 “pledges” in the TMC manifesto, Banerjee said those of other political parties are mere promises.

“The 10 pledges of the TMC are not just mere promises. When promises are made, they are meant to be broken. Our pledges are made to be implemented within three months if our government comes to power,” he said.

More than 300 shops turned into ashes in a devastating fire that engulfed a British-era ‘Chowk Bazaar’. The blaze that broke out late on Thursday evening in the heart of Jorhat town was brought under control after nearly 10 hours of fire-fighting on Friday morning.

There is no report of any casualty as all shops were closed with owners and staff having left for their homes on Thursday evening.

Over 50 fire tenders were rushed to the bazaar to fight the flames, which is suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit at a shop, officials said.

Initially, 25 fire tenders had rushed to the spot, but they had a hard time navigating their way through the narrow lanes adjoining the market.

Later, additional firefighters and vehicles were sent to the spot from nearby towns of Titabor, Mariani, Golaghat and Sivasagar along with those from the Air Force station in Jorhat, the Numaligarh Refinery and the ONGC.

Shah Alam Talukdar, accused in the killing of businessman Ranjit Bora, had “escaped” from police custody on Friday, while he was being taken to the crime spot, they said.

A police officer said he was nabbed from Sonapur area on Friday night, but “attempted to flee” from custody again, prompting personnel of the force

to shoot him. Talukdar was taken to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital with bullet injuries, where he was declared dead, he said. The accused and four others were arrested earlier in February,

over two months after the killing of Bora, a distributor of a dairy cooperative.

Chidambaram calls Modi government ‘too feeble’

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday said labelling remarks by George Soros as an ‘attempt to topple the democratically elected government in India’ was a puerile statement. He wondered if the Modi government was “so feeble” that it can be toppled by a stray statement of a 92-yearold rich foreign national.

Chidambaram’s statement came after the BJP reacted angrily to remarks made by Soros on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Munich Security conference, alleging that Soros was targeting the Indian democratic system so that people “hand-picked” by him get to run the government here.

“The people of India will determine who will be

Bhiwani murder case: 1 accused sent to police custody

JAIPUR/GURUGRAM, FEB 18 (PTI): A Rajasthan court on Saturday sent one accused to police remand for five days in connection with the alleged abduction and murder of two men by cow vigilantes, while Haryana authorities moved to cancel the arms licence of Monu Manesar who is among the four evading arrest in the case. The family members of Nasir (25) and Junaid alias Juna (35), residents of Ghatmeeka village in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan whose charred bodies were found inside a burnt car in Loharu in Bhiwani in Haryana on Thursday morning, met Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot who assured them all the accused would be arrested at the earliest.

AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi, who was in Rajasthan on a two-day visit, alleged that “delay” by the Rajasthan government in acting on the missing complaint

lodged by the family members of two men allowed the accused to flee the state. He also accused the BJP of protecting such elements.

“The arrested accused Rinku Saini was produced before the court today from where he was sent to five days police remand. The accused will be further interrogated,” Station House Officer of Gopalgarh Ramnaresh Meena said.

Saini, 32, a resident of Firozpur Jhirka in Haryana’s Nuh district, was arrested on the basis of interrogation and technical analysis on Friday night. He works as a taxi diver and was involved with a cow vigilante group, the Rajasthan police said.

One of the key accused in the case is Mohit Yadav alias Monu Manesar, the Gurugram district president of Bajrang Dal who was a member of the district cow protection task force.

Rinku Saini, arrested by the Rajasthan Police in connection with the alleged abduction and murder of two men, has told investigators that they were taken to the Haryana Police by cow vigilantes, an officer said on Saturday.

The police officer said his claim would be verified.

His claim corroborates with the statement of Mohammad Jabir, a relative of the deceased, that the two were first taken to the Firozpur Jhirka police station in Haryana but police refused take their custody as their condition was serious.

Subsequently they were taken to Loharu in Bhiwani district.

Nasir (25) and Junaid alias Juna (35), both residents of Ghatmeeka village in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan, were allegedly abducted by cow vigilantes on Wednesday and their bodies were found inside a burnt car in Loharu in Bhiwani in Haryana on Thursday morning.

The Rajasthan Police has booked five people in connection with the case and arrested one of them, Saini, Friday night.

“Saini has claimed during interrogation that Junaid and Nasir were taken to Haryana Police. The claim will be verified,” Inspector General of Police of Bharatpur range Gaurav Srivastava told reporters.

Saini, 32, a resident of Firozpur Jhirka in Haryana’s Nuh district, was remanded in five-day police custody on Saturday.

Party government, who also held the charge of the Excise department, was earlier questioned on October 17 last year and his home and bank lockers were also searched in connection with the case.

“The further investigation in the case regarding the money trail and the larger conspiracy in the formulation and implementation of Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22 is still in progress,” an official said.

In a tweet, Sisodia said nothing was found against

him during searches, and he would continue cooperating in the investigation.

“CBI has called again tomorrow. They have used the full power of CBI, ED against me, raided my house, searched bank locker, but nothing was found against me,” Sisodia said.

Apparently referring to the centre, he said that the CBI has been made to go after him because “they” want to stop him from doing “good work” on the education of the children in Delhi.

Communal cauldron

There has been increased attacks on Christians in India since 2014 and most surprising, such incidents have by and large, are being relegated to the background by the media for whatever reason. Attacks on Christians in India is nothing new as it has been going on for several decades. Those extreme right wing elements justify their attacks on Christians on the specious plea that Hindus are being converted to Christianity through fraud or coercion. This type of pernicious falsehood against Christianity has only given rise to anti-Christian mindset. Assam has always been a peaceful state in as far as relationship among religious communities is concerned. However, since 2021 the environmental landscape in Assam appears to have undergone a drastic change where religious minorities are feeling genuinely apprehensive. Muslims have been the target of RSS and its political wing the BJP due to the fear of influx by illegal immigrants, mostly from Bangladesh. Of recent months, Christians are beginning to feel the pinch as churches have been razed under the plea of being constructed over encroached lands while the fact is that the poor affect tribals have not been given sufficient time to prove otherwise. Added to this has been the most recent demand of Janajati Dharma Sanskriti Suraksha Manch , an RSSbacked group in Assam, to remove the Scheduled Tribe status of people who have embraced Christianity has become a political issue. The JDSSM has threatened to hype up the issue to delist Christians from SC and ST list. Assam has a substantial Christian minority and owing to the surcharged fear psychosis among minorities due to the politically sponsored attacks , zealots such as the JDSSM entered a Presbyterian church and disrupted services and chased away worshippers. It is accepted that since 2014 there has been blatant atrocities meted out on Christians by extreme right wing groups of VHP and its youth wing, the Bajrang Dal, all of who are from the same Sangh Parivar. Christians have also been receiving the focus from these elements who barge inside prayer halls during worship, beat up worshippers, vandalise and destroy properties inside churches. In order to draw the attention of the Centre and society at large, the Christian Forum Dimapur (CFD) along with other church organisations in Dimapur are conducting a prayer rally in Dimapur on February 19 (Sunday). It has been quite a while since church organisations have organised peaceful protest rallies and that holding it now indicates the gravity of the situation.” Indian democracy, once considered remarkable in scale and duration, is being systematically weakened by the rise of xenophobic nationalism and atrocities meted out to religious minorities. Although these trends were evident in the past, yet they have dramatically increased amidst the growth of hyper nationalism of the Hindutva brand. The BJP by not taking swift and stern action against those inciting communal hatred and promoting violence against religious minorities, has not only encouraged such acts but also legitimised them. The government has curbed dissent on grounds that it threatens national stability by invoking Sections 124A (outlawing sedition) and 120B (outlawing criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The British colonial government created a precedent for this repressive activity by arresting Mahatma Gandhi under Section 124A of IPC. Recurrence of such incidents despite assurances and promises that they won’t happen but no action taken against the perpetrators is an environment that does not augur well for secular democracy.

Taking the Initiative Against Despair

Rise, let us be going. —Matthew 26:46

In the Garden of Gethsemane, the disciples went to sleep when they should have stayed awake, and once they realized what they had done it produced despair. The sense of having done something irreversible tends to make us despair. We say, “Well, it’s all over and ruined now; what’s the point in trying anymore.” If we think this kind of despair is an exception, we are mistaken. It is a very ordinary human experience. Whenever we realize we have not taken advantage of a magnificent opportunity, we are apt to sink into despair. But Jesus comes and lovingly says to us, in essence, “Sleep on now. That opportunity is lost forever and you can’t change that. But get up, and let’s go on to the next thing.” In other words, let the past sleep, but let it sleep in the sweet embrace of Christ, and let us go on into the invincible future with Him.

There will be experiences like this in each of our lives. We will have times of despair caused by real events in our lives, and we will be unable to lift ourselves out of them. The disciples, in this instance, had done a downright unthinkable thing— they had gone to sleep instead of watching with Jesus. But our Lord came to them taking the spiritual initiative against their despair and said, in effect, “Get up, and do the next thing.” If we are inspired by God, what is the next thing? It is to trust Him absolutely and to pray on the basis of His redemption.

Never let the sense of past failure defeat your next step.

Quotes

The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.

Bad politics and religious bigotry

In a country where Christians are persecuted and accused of illegal conversion and slabbed with anti-conversion bill, where churches and her institutions are demolished, comes a politician with the political party slogan to play the religious card. Why has he/ they not stood for the minorities when innocents are harassed and abuse without any protection from the authority? Your silence in the parliament and the position you occupy to defend and safeguard the minorities has caused much harm. I

am sure you are aware that the big India is listed as the “10th most dangerous

country to live in for Christians”? It has become so because you chose to remain silent to be the voice of the oppressed. Your religious card holds no water and therefore, you must return and do your homework to find out the spots where the minorities are hurting and are in pain. This is election campaign and not a spiritualreligious campaign. The “Hallelujah” and “Praise the Lord” are worship words. These worship-spiritual words are not to be equated with Bharat mata ji. Election campaign is not a worship service. Using the Hallelujah and Praise

the Lord in the political platform is nothing but an insult and a ploy to divide the Christians majority society. If it has come out from your heart It should make you bold enough to stand for the sufferings of the minorities in the country. However, your silence and bad politics has cause the Christians and the church to suffer from harassment, abuse and persecution the hands of the majority. To say the least, the repeated shouts in your political campaign is a blasphemy. It simply amounts to religious bigotry. You are not given a religious platform but a po-

litical platform. Therefore, a line should be drawn and the platform should not be used to hurt the sentiments of the Christians in this part of the country you are touring. The hurt caused by your blatant use of Christian liturgical phrase calls for a deeper homework to find out under which political party and the regime the secular India is going through social upheaval. You cannot use your political platform to divide the people in this distant land.

A political party that is backed by religious fanatics seeking to eliminate the religious minorities in the country should not try

to please people with bad politics. Our politicians are also to be blamed as well because you have not oriented your star with the religious-faith ethos of your people. Anyone can come to campaign for you but there should be some civic sense of respect for others.

You cannot play with the sentiments of others for your political mileage. It only amounts to what the Apostle Paul said “….they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant

On the current Naga political issue

This writer is reminded of some lines by the great poet, T.S Eliot who beautifully expressed the predicaments of human existence and the vast gap caused by them between our expectations and achievements, between our dreams and reality, and between the promises and their delivery :

‘Between the idea

And the reality

Between the motion

And the act

Falls the shadow.’

Unfortunately, true to poet Eliot’s lines, Naga people are living in the shadow and made to be content with.

Chief Minister Rio, while campaigning for the NDPP candidate for the 18 Chozuba assembly constituency on January 31, 2023, pledged that when the NDPP - BJP alliance returns to power, the top priority will be the Naga political issue. Why does Rio keep on raking up the Naga political issue when solution has been said to have been reached and agreed upon by the negotiation parties after more than 25 years of negotiation, and that too, whenever the state is about to go for election?

When the state government had enough time to talk about solution at any period of time, why only when election is near?

In 2003, Rio had promised to secure solution within three months of coming to power if

people voted for the NPF party by rejecting the Congress party. Since then, solution to the Naga political issue has remained his top most priority, always garnishing his commitment to bring lasting peace and prosperity to Nagaland with Naga solution.

After 20 years, we now see that Rio’s idea of a solution to the Naga political issue was, has been, and is only going to be the policy of ‘equi-closeness’with all the Naga political factions. The “I scratch your back, you scratch my back” policy with the Naga political groups to remain in power. Besides this “live and let live” policy, Rio and his government has done precious little to draw a political road map for the Nagas, and has instead created more confusions with their unapologetic unabashed pretentions about their self-appointed role as ‘facilitator’.

Equally to blame is the BJP, because Rio is nothing but BJP. What is the BJP but to parrot what Rio tells them to do and say. Every BJP legislator, before starting a speech, will first shower glory, honour, appreciation and eternal thankfulness to Rio. BJP has been in power along with Rio for the last 20 years. By conspiring with Rio, BJP has turned out to be the main stumbling block to the Naga political solution.

Nobody has forgotten the 2018 assembly election. In 2018, the desire for solution was the strongest than at any other time especially after RN Ravi, the then Governor cum interlocutor to the Naga political talks, had, in no uncertain means, declared that whatever was to have been negotiated had been covered, and that there was nothing more to negotiate and, therefore, officially, all talks have ended by October 31, 2019. As such, all the civil society organisations and political parties, which included the BJP as a signatory, had it all worked out inorder to push the central government to the corner and fructify the demand for solution, by refraining from signing the nomination papers. It was the BJP who betrayed the Nagas by going back on its own promise by filing nominations. NDPP immediately followed happily. In this context, let us flashback to the 1998 assembly election. Unlike 2018 election, in 1998, there was no information whatsoever in the public domain about the contents of negotiations, the progress in talks, and if there was any broad based agreement. People of Nagaland made a big mistake by coming to a decision that assembly election should be deferred or postponed inorder to facilitate solution. The

then CM, SC Jamir, refused to bow down to the pressure from various lobbies to boycott the election and give ‘peace a chance’ through the objective and slogan ‘Solution, not Election’. Jamir’s stand was clear. He stood against deferment of election since there was no time frame as to when solution would be secured, and for which the constitutional process cannot be withheld indefinitely.

The people, actually, affirmed Jamir’s stand by giving the Congress party more seats than all the other parties in the 2003 election inspite of the huge ‘Naga solution’ wave created by Rio and his assurance of solution within three months of coming to power.

Thus we see that the year 2018 was a deja-vu, a repetition of 1998 when various CSOs from Nagaland came up with the resolution to not participate in the election and demanded that solution be declared since all official talks had ended and what was needed was only to ink the final draft for the agreement. The difference was that while SC Jamir was pragmatic and truthful in 1998 by his stand against the deferment of election, BJP was most untruthful in 2018 by agreeing to refrain from filing nomination papers, only to betray the Naga people by signing the nomination papers. Immediately the NDPP

Strangling Dreams: Casteism In Education Sector

Education and technology has been globally recognised as the major forces for convergence, progress in technology eventually reinforced with the progress in education, a nation cannot progress in production and technology without substantial progress in education and the progress in education cannot be accomplished by any particular section; it is a process of coordination. Education has its unique role in the development and growth regardless of societies. India is now a country with a literacy rate of 78%. which has a dreadful history concerning access to education which has been restricted by a particular section of society to the rest of the society for more than 2000 years in the name of caste, religion, culture, tradition and literature. After a long history of struggles the constitution of India has ensured the education to all and further progressive steps are being taken by successive governments to democratise education remarkably by the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu K.Kamaraj a crusader of free education and a pioneer of mid day meal program which has been preceding outset from free breakfast to schools in Chennai by justice party then ruling part of Madras presidency State in 1920 the initiation was transformed and adapted by different governments in different states as a attempt of benefitting all the socially, economically, educationally backward societies. All these material supportive attempts are not enough

to keep out the permeating tenacious prejudices over the marginalized communities in the education sector it can be illustrated by three unpleasant events in three distinct parts of the nation in three different fields of education sector and failed to prevent the persecution and suicidal murders of the under privileged students with aspiration of education. Education as a only means towards a decent future for those who have been oppressed for generations inherited near to nothing other than the shackles of caste with many future aspirations are abruptly aborted in earlier stages. A boy from marginalized section of class 11 in u.p. was allegedly beaten up by the principal for drinking water from his bottle. Strikingly this incident provokes the nostalgia of discrimination faced by our forefathers centuries ago.

Another instance of The deep rooted casteism manifest in the pioneering mid-day meal program which is in interest of all especially for economically deprived students from all societies has been demeaned when a cook from a socially marginalized section was restrained from performing her duty in coimbatore allegedly in the name of caste this event which is strikingly hostile with the Dr. Ambedkar’s vision of annihilation of caste where social dining involves the contribution of all in performing various actions without any indifferences will be an important means in construction of better society. Confining in search of better education Irrespective of

marks secured in the higher secondary examination or junior college examination by spending an enormous hard earned valuable parental resources (at times debted resources) at coaching centres and invaluable years of time excluding the sleep hours, penance with the reading and writing materials, self isolation in midst of social activities, concentration amidst distraction, all this physical and mental toils in the process of preparing to succeed in an all India level competitive entrance examination after learning and adapting to its evolving techniques, aptitudes, theories, logics, codes and complying with the required grades to secure a admission in the premier institutions are nevertheless similar pre-admission difficulties to all thereafter comes certain unprecedented postadmission riddles equipped with demeaning and discrimination in the name of hollow casteist structure waiting exclusively for socially marginalized students with the dreams of prospering future. Reciting more than a decade old data

“Nearly 80percent of students suicide in IIT’S till 2011 were of socially marginalized community students” pertaining to have its relevance today which has been ignored forever has started to gain meagre attention aftermath of Rohit vemula suicide an tragedy took place in 2016 as a nexus trajectory of tragedies continues allegation in the name of Darshan Solanki in 2023.

All the above mentioned events emphasize the significance of reservation in the education sector in multiple

friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain (1 Timothy 6:4-5). Today is a day of prayer and therefore, may we all humble ourselves before the Almighty God, the creator of heavens and the earth. Let us seek forgiveness in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, the savior of this world. May God grant us the wisdom to discern right from wrong, what is honorable and what is abominable in the sight of God, Almighty.

followed, as if reluctantly, in filing nominations. The BJP’s betrayal had Rio’s footprint allover.

Today, what is there for the BJP to show? There is nothing except two agreements signed on two papers (and that too, not even by a ministerial rank authority of the govt. of India) which the central BJP government itself is unable and unwilling and confused as to decide on what to do with them.

It is high time Naga people realise that overfocus on the Naga political issue is nothing but simply a ploy to play with the emotions of the people inorder to cover up misgovernance. The Rio led BJP government of Nagaland has been functioning for all these years as a proxy government of the Naga political factions. They are enjoying power without accountability. They are the crime syndicates, the mafia bosses of Nagaland and of whom Neiphiu Rio is the Godfather, and Imna Along - the torch bearer of the Lotus in Nagaland - his second-incommand in crime.

The more things change in Nagaland, the more it remains the same. Nagas today do not want new wine in old bottle. Given a choice but with no alternative, the preference would be old wine in new bottle.

dimensions of Reservation in student admissions, reservation in teaching and non- teaching faculty recruitment. Educational institutions lethargicness in filling the backlog vacancies turning to be lethal year after year. It is a need in dual aspects, first in accordance with providing equal opportunity and next in accordance with ensuring the functioning or utilisation to the best provided opportunity. If the prestigious institutions had enough staff from obc, sc, st communities the culmination of Rohit vemula would have been different.

Necessary proceedings must be taken to ensure the filling up of the backlog vacancies and following by guaranteed reservation in promotions as 80 colleges under the delhi university do not have even one Dalit principal.

IIT Bombay has admitted the two campus based surveys to end the existence of “culture of exclusion”. It is a high time to extend solidarity irrespective of all the indifferences and adhering to the humanity. In spite of appointing inactive committees as a customary practice Affirmative action must be taken to ensure the equal treatment of students and stringent action must be taken against caste based crime preparators.

It must not be tolerated by any society that The dream destinations are turning into deathbeds for the upcoming generations in hope of upliftment not for dominance or hegemony but for decency, dignity, equality, emancipation and liberation.

Some hope this election

Sir, Going through different media channels and papers now the general public can see some rays of hope at the end of the tunnel.

1.Common platforms. Like the American presidential election the Nagas nowadays have make used of common platforms for the candidates which help the voters to understand more of the candidate, their manifestoes and the party they belong to. In the near future more of these platforms should be used rather than individual campaigns which will in turn save unnecessary wastage of time, energy and above all Money .

2.Young dynamic candidates.

This 14th Nagaland Assembly election is witnessing many young and dynamic leaders who wanted to bring positive changes in political, economic and social fields. Despite many hardships and hurdles they are willing to take up challenges for the betterment of our society and mother land ‘Nagaland’. Hats off to all those leaders.

3.Police check their own vehicles. Sir in our naga history this of a kind is unheard of, rather it was just opposite. Hats off to all those dutiful officers who are trying hard to install faith in the department and to win the hearts of the citizens. Other wise many public have indeed lost their faith at our own protector. Going through these incidents in different medias, at least the general public of Nagaland can see a ray of hope in the midst of hopelessness. Ashi.Aier Midland,

MUMBAI, FEB 18

(AGENCIES): Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday raised the pitch of his attack on the Election Commission, a day after it awarded the Shiv Sena party name and bow-and-arrow symbol to his rival and successor Eknath Shinde, reports India News.

“The Election Commission, PM [Narendra] Modi’s slave, has done something that has never happened before,” he said, urging his supporters to be patient and prepare for the next elections - the highstakes contest for Mumbai’s civic body BMC.

Thackeray addressed a large crowd assembled as a show of strength outside Matoshree, the family home of the Thackerays. He stood out of the sunroof of his car, evoking the image of his father Bal Thackeray, who famously used to address followers from the roof of his car in the party’s early days.

The party’s symbol has been “stolen” and the “thief” needs to be taught a lesson, Uddhav Thackeray said, a remark aimed at Shinde, the Maharashtra Chief Minister.

A huge crowd of supporters gathered outside Matoshree, the family of the Thackerays.

Giriraj challenges Rahul to a debate on MGNREGA

NEW DELHI, FEB 18

(PTI): Dismissing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s charges related to MGNREGA, Union minister Giriraj Singh said on Saturday that both allocations for the scheme and asset creations under it during the Narendra Modi government were more than the previous UPA dispensation.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of Saras Mela in Noida, Singh took strong exception to Gandhi’s Facebook post alleging a reduction in MGNREGA budget and said the Congress leader should get his facts and figures right before making such “wild allegations”. He also challenged Gandhi to a debate on the

rural job scheme. The Union rural development minister said that in the 10 years of the Congressled UPA government, the budget estimate (BE) for MGNREGA never exceeded Rs 33,000 crore and in most of the fiscals, part of the allocated funds got surrendered due to poor implementation of the scheme.

Teachers’ scam: Third arrested reveals rates fixed for teaching jobs

(IANS): Chandan Mondal

aka Ranjan, the third middleman arrested in connection with the multi-crore teachers’ recruitment scam in West Bengal on Friday, has reportedly given to CBI sleuths a break-up of rates fixed for giving appointments as teachers of different grades in state-run schools. Sources said that the rates varied between Rs 5,00,000 and went up to the level ranging from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 30 lakh. The lowest range for the payments started with the primary level and gradually progressed in the next three levels of upper primary, secondary and higher secondary.

Explaining the rationale for the different rates for different levels of teachers, a headmaster of a staterun school in West Bengal told IANS on condition of anonymity that since the scale-pay for these four levels are higher according

Thackeray’s team, who had urged the Election Commission to wait for a Supreme Court verdict in the case, has said they will challenge the decision in the top court. The tussle between the two sides is being heard by the Supreme Court.

Shinde had mounted a rebellion in June, flying away with over 40 Sena MLAs with the help of the BJP, and triggering the eventual ouster of Thackeray’s government that included two ideologically disparate allies in the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party.

In a 78-page order on the protracted battle for control of the party, the Election Commission said Mr Shinde was supported by MLAs with 76 per cent of the party’s winning votes in the 2019 Maharashtra assembly polls.

Supporters of the Shiv Sena (UBT) protested here on Saturday against the Election Commission of India which has allotted the name ‘Shiv Sena’ and its poll symbol ‘bow and arrow’ to the group led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

The protesters accused the EC of acting at the behest of the Narendra Modi government. Shinde and Modi’s party BJP are the ruling partners in Maharashtra.

Bhaskar Ambekar, affiliated with the Uddhav Thackeray group, said all government and constitutional bodies are working under the pressure of the BJP-ruled Centre and decisions are being made by “trampling” the law and Constitution.

Amit Shah hails EC decision; attacks Uddhav with ‘licking soles’ jibe

Union Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said those who chose to “lick the soles” of people with opposite ideologies have found which side truth was on after the Election Commission declared the faction headed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as the real Shiv Sena and gave it the ‘bow and arrow’ symbol.

Without naming Uddhav Thackeray, Shah, who was speaking at the launch of Marathi version of the booked ‘Modi@20’, also reiterated there was no agreement on sharing the chief minister’s post in the run up to the 2019 Assembly polls.

“A primary teacher in a state-run school at the entry level gets somewhat between Rs 26,000 to Rs 27,000 a month, which goes to the bracket of Rs 33,000 to Rs 34,000 in the upper primary level, Rs 37,000 to Rs 38,000 in the secondary level and finally to Rs 42,000 to Rs 43,000 in the higher secondary level. This is the entry-level pay I am speaking of,” he said.

“Now in case of increment, there is a fixed annual increment of three per cent for all the four levels. But naturally the levels drawing high pay-scale will attract more in hand as incremental sum than the levels in lower pay-scales. This makes the higher secondary level naturally more attractive than the other three levels. Rest is up to your understanding and conclusion,” he added.

He claimed that among the anchor investors in the Adani Enterprises follow-on public offering (FPO) were the Life Insurance Corporation of India which bid Rs 299 crore, State Bank of India Employees’ Pension Fund which bid Rs 99 crore, and SBI Life Insurance Compa-

has turned into ‘Ashiksha’ in Bengal: Dharmendra Pradhan

KOLKATA, FEB 18 (PTI):

Union Education Minister

Dharmendra Pradhan Sat-

urday hit out at the TMC government in West Bengal saying ‘shiksha’ (education) has turned into ‘ashiksha’ (lack of education) in the state due to malpractices by its leaders and ministers. He accused TMC of letting loose a regime of ‘tolabaji’ and ‘cut money’ in the education sector of the state.

Pointing to the arrests made in connection with teaching and non-teaching staff recruitment scam, he said the central investigation

agencies will unearth the entire scandal and take the guilty to task. Pradhan was referring to the arrests of former state minister Partha Chatterjee and several officers of the state recruitment panel and education board in connection with the scam in the recruitment of teach-

ing and non-teaching staff in government and government-sponsored schools. The scam is being probed by the CBI and Enforcement Directorate.

“More big names will come under CBI’s lens in the coming days as investigation by the central agencies progresses ... Now middlemen in job recruitment scams are being caught. Wait for central agencies to find the big names involved in it. That will happen in due course of time,” he told reporters at the sidelines of a religious programme here.

ny which bid Rs 125 crore.

“These publicly owned institutions participated in the FPO despite the fact that the market price had dropped far below the issue price and that both LIC and SBI already owned large chunks of Adani Group equity. Were instructions issued to LIC and SBI to deploy the savings of crores of Indians to once again bail out the Adani Group,” he asked in a statement.

Posting the questions, Ramesh tweeted, “Mahashivaratri today and along with it here is HAHK (Hum Adani ke Hain Kaun)-13. The 13th set of questions to the PM.

Aaj Toh Chuppi Todiye

Pradhan Mantriji (Break your silence today, Prime Minister)!”

Under the HAHK series, the opposition party has been posing questions to the government on the

Adani issue.

In its latest set of questions to the prime minister, the Congress asked, “Is it true that a high-profile Union Minister with longstanding commercial links made personal calls to fivesix of the most well-known businesspersons on behalf of Gautam Adani and asked them to invest their personal funds in the FPO to save Gautambhai from embarrassment? Does this not represent a conflict of interest worth investigating? Did this Union Minister act on instructions from you?”

The Congress leader also asked if the family offices that were pressured to bail out the Adani FPO given assurances that this was only to save Gautam Adani’s reputation and that the FPO would be subsequently cancelled and the money returned to the investors.

it should also allow regional parties to stay in the driving seat in states where they are stronger. The grand-old party should not delay any further for the opposition unity,” Tejashwi said while addressing a gathering in CPI(ML)’s 11th party Congress here.

Earlier, veteran Congress leader Salman Khurshid, who is also participating in the event, said, “We (Congress) and you (Nitish Kumar, Tejashwi Yadav and other opposition parties of the country) have the same wish to bring down the BJP. We are on the same side but waiting for each other to make the first move.”

Tejashwi Yadav recently met Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. He had also planned to meet Telangana CM K. Chandrashekher Rao but had to postpone it due to the model code of conduct imposed in Telangana.

After the formation of Mahagathbandhan government in Bihar, Chief Minister Kumar stayed for three days in Delhi last year and met with several leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Sitaram Yechuri, D. Raja, Akhilesh Yadav, Arvind Kejriwal, Om Prakash Chautala for the opposition unity.

VK Saxena

NEW DELHI, FEB 18

(PTI): The much-delayed Delhi mayoral poll will be held on February 22 as Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena gave his nod on Saturday to convene the municipal House, a day after a Supreme Court order paved the way for the election. The LG’s nod to convene the MCD House came hours after Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal recommended to him that the mayoral election be held on the said date.

“Recommended MCD mayor elections to be held on 22 Feb,” Kejriwal said in a tweet earlier in the day.

The development came a day after the top court ordered the issuance of a notice within 24 hours for convening the first meeting of the civic body to fix the date of the elections for the mayor, the deputy mayor and the members of the standing committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

his

The Aam Aadmi party on Saturday staged a protest outside Delhi Lt Governor V.K Saxena’s office seeking his resignation over the delay in the mayoral election.

After the Supreme Court’s Friday ruling that the nominated members cannot vote for mayoral election, the L-G should resign immediately as he delayed the polls over two-and-a-half months, it said.

The party alleged that Delhi L-G, along with BJP, was engaged in postponing the mayoral election for two-and-a-half months and unconstitutionally allowing the voting rights to the nominated members.

“Yesterday, the Supreme Court proved that the LG-BJP together were tearing apart the Constitution. In the role of guardian of the constitution, the LG was engaged in tearing apart the constitution itself, so does he have any right to continue in his post? asked AAP leader Durgesh Pathak.

AAP Mayor candidate Shelly Oberoi said that after the Supreme Court verdict, L-G Saxena should immediately resign from his post.

compensation cess to states to be cleared: FM

NEW DELHI, FEB 18

(IANS): Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Saturday that the entire GST compensation cess for June 2022 totalling Rs 16,982 crore will be cleared.

She said this while addressing a press conference soon after the 49th meeting of the GST Council ended.

She also informed that Rs 16,524 crore to six states which have submitted the accountant general’s (AG) certificate will also be released.

Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Telangana are among the six states which have submitted AG certificates.

Though submission of AG certificate is a requirement for the states to seek GST compensation, Sitharaman said that it wasn’t a strict pre-requisite, as 90 per cent of funds are anyway released to the states, while the remaining amount is given after the AG certificate is submitted.

The GST Council also recommended rationalisation of late fee for delayed filing of annual returns.

The GST Council meeting, which was held at Vigyan Bhavan here, discussed matters pertaining to setting up of appellate tribunals and curbing tax evasion in pan masala and gutkha businesses.

The groupf of ministers’ (GoM) report on taxation for pan masala was accepted by the council.

At the meeting, the GST Council decided to reduce GST on pencil sharpeners and certain tracking devices. Exemption on coal rejects supplied by and to the washeries was also approved by the Council. Also, GST on a type of liquid jaggery has

Framework Agreement signed by Modi’s government was kept secret and never discussed.

“We never knew what was in it, until the details started to leak, yet no official statement was made”, he stated.

He said that solution should be based on maintaining dignity, pride, and diversity of Naga society, and should be a holistic solution, accepted by all Nagas. “The only way possible to achieve an honorable political settlement, is if the Congress is part of the government in Nagaland”, he stated and maintained that Congress was the only party that would protect, preserve and promote Art. 371 (A).

Claiming that Congress led UPA government under Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was very close to a final solution, however, it could not be get resolved as the it had to be acceptable to a larger cross section of the people in Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, he said.

Further, Ramesh said that the mood of the people in Nagaland as well as the rest of the country was for a change, as the people were fed up with false promises made by BJP.

“In Nagaland specifically, people are fed up of lack of water, proper road, power supply, etc.,” he stated.

However, no decision could be arrived at by the fitment committee for SUVs and MUVs.

Sitharaman said that the GST Council decided to tax services supplied by courts and tribunals under the reverse charge mechanism.

She also informed that the decision on the GST Appellate Tribunal has been accepted with change in language and the modification in draft will be circulated within a week.

Sitharaman said that she expects to finalise the GoM report on GST tribunals with slight modifications so that it is ready by March 1 and can be included in the Finance Bill.

With the concern that publishing misinformation compromises the credibility of the Fourth Es-tate, Yhoshü said the journalists had merely suggested that the local media cell crosscheck all statements before releasing it to the press.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by NDPP 3 Dimapur III AC working president, Tohoshe Awomi, and invocation by DBCD pastor Rev Simon Khemprai. Short speeches were also delivered by former president of Kachari Tribal Council Nagaland, SK Khemprai; NDPP 3 Dimapur III AC working president & former chairman, Bade Village, Kiesalie Thopi and Dr LK Achumi, retired district judge and former president of WSH. NDPP releases poll manifesto

(From p-1)

The party was of the belief that the people of Nagaland deserve a government that works for their welfare, and the manifesto was a roadmap towards achieving that goal. The manifesto also focuses on a range of issues, including education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, and job creation. It said that these issues were critical to the development of Nagaland and the welfare of its citizens.

NDPP said that through these proposed initiatives, the party aimed to transform Nagaland into a modern, prosperous, and inclusive state.

Some of the key proposals include establishment of world-class educational institutions, the development of a robust healthcare system, the modernization of agriculture and the promo-tion of entrepreneurship, the construction of high-quality infrastructure, and the creation of new job opportunities.

NDPP, therefore, called upon the people of the State to read and engage with their manifesto and provide feedback and suggestions. “We believe that the voice of the people is essential in shaping our vision and plan of action,” NDPP said and exuded confidence that the manifesto would resonate with the people of Nagaland, and would be a key factor in their decisionmaking process during the upcoming state elections.

“We pledge to work tirelessly towards the realization of our vision and transform Nagaland to a state of excellence,” it added.

NEW DELHI, FEB 18 (IANS): The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has directed telecom service providers to take urgent steps to demonstrate visible improvement in quality of service and quality of experience by consumers, including 5G.

In a meeting with telecom operators, the authority told telcos to analyse the issue of call muting and one way speech and take corrective action on priority.

“While rolling out the 5G network, TSPs should ensure that there is least disturbance or degradation of

quality of service (QoS) of existing telecom services,” said the TRAI.

TRAI held a meeting with major mobile service providers on Friday to review the issues related to quality of telecom services being faced by consumers and the menace of unsolicited commercial communications (UCCI), like pesky calls and text messages by telemarketers.

The authority further told the iiiTSPs to closely monitor the incidences of long-duration network outages. “Such outages adversely affect quality of services

Sapralu further said that the BJP party workers in Nagaland were no less Christians like any other members of other political parties in the State. She also mentioned that the party makes it a point to invite pastors/deacons to invoke/pray for God’s blessing before starting any programme, big or small.

Sapralu, therefore, appealed to the DAABPF to not misunderstand their intention situation as it was not done with any malicious intention.

Supplementing Sapralu, Nalin Kohli, who was also present at the campaign on February 16, clarified that no votes were being asked in the name of God.

Kohli acknowledged that whenever any political programmes or events were held in Nagaland, the programmes begin by invoking the blessings of God. He, therefore, reit-

erated that the party was not seeking votes by doing so. “But can anyone say that we should not remember God and asked if anyone can say that they cannot remember God?

He pointed that some misguided political people were spreading such wrong information without showing the whole picture to create confusion among the people.

Kohli also spoke about road connectivity, wherein he said it was party’s priority to boost connectivity.

Meanwhile, he informed that the NDPP-BJP would be hold joint campaigns where a galaxy of leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, union home minister Amit Shah, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio and other Central minister would be addressing the public rallies across the State. and consumer experience. All the telecom providers were asked to report such outages to TRAI in any district or state,” said the telecom regulator. TRAI also asked TSPs to plan and implement systems for online data collection for quality of service (QoS) benchmarks and their processing to generate performance reports with License Service Area, State level or lower granularity.

“This will simplify the process of QoS performance reporting by TSPs and thereby reduce the compliance burden,” it said.

Earlier this week, a survey revealed that two in three Indians get three or more pesky calls every day and 50 per cent of them said such calls originate from a personal number of people. According to LocalCircles which conducted the survey, 45 per cent or people get on average 3-5 pesky calls each day while 16 per cent claimed getting 6-10 such calls per day.

4G/5G tech stack ready: Ashwini

NEW DELHI, FEB 18 (PTI): India has proven its mettle with its indigenous 4G/5G technology stack which is “now ready” and the country is poised to emerge as a major telecom technology exporter to the world in the coming three years, Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Saturday.

Speaking at the Economic Times Global Business Summit 2023, Vaishnaw, who is also the Minister for Railways, categorically said there is no programme for the privatisation of the national transporter. The 5G services were launched on October 1, 2022, and within a span of 100 days have been rolled out in 200-plus cities. The sheer speed of rollout has been appreciated by industry leaders globally and is being described in many international forums as the “fastest deployment happening anywhere in the world”, he said.

Vaishnaw highlighted the population-scale solutions being tested on India stack, across platforms such as payments, healthcare and identity. Each of these platforms is powerful in itself, but together become a dynamic force that can solve “any major problem in the world”.

The minister said India is set to emerge as a telecom technology exporter to the world in the next three years. “Today there are two Indian companies that are exporting to the world...telecom gear. In the coming three years, we will see India as a major telecom technology exporter in the world,” Vaishnaw said.

India targets 7% growth this year, expects to cross it in 5 years: EAM

NEW DELHI, FEB 18 (AGENCIES): India is targeting seven per cent growth in economy this year and

we expect it to cross it in the next five years, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Saturday and adding that New Delhi will try to stay in the 7-9 per cent range at least for a decade and a half.

“We are targeting 7 per cent growth this year, but we expect it to improve in the next five years. And definitely, we would stay in 7-9 per cent range at least for a decade and a half,” Jaishankar said at the Raisina@ Sydney Business Breakfast.

“And you can today see the same reflected in the

investment climate, both in the flow of FDI, FII as well as in the investments which the government itself is leading the capital outlay in this year’s budget,” he added.

Raisina@Sydney Business Breakfast is being organized jointly by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) and India’s Observer Research Foundation (ORF) at the InterContinental Hotel in Sydney.

Taking about the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) singed between India and Australia on April 2, 2022 and came into force on December 29, 2022, Jaishankar said that the ECTA has a “good impact on trade”.

“Encouraging greater investments should be the focus, especially during CEO Forum meets or the Prime Minister and Trade Ministers visit,” he suggested. Jaishankar also spoke about migration mobility and said, “We’ve seen a very substantial movement of Indian talent to Australia. We have roughly about a million students staying in here.”

“We would welcome Australian universities to India. For us, it’s not just about Indian students coming to Australia but it’s also about Australia and India working together to produce skilled, competitive talent in India for the entire world,” he added.

Indian-origin man convicted of father’s murder in UK

LONDON, FEB 18

(PTI): An Indian-origin man who was found guilty of the murder of his father by smashing a champagne bottle over his head in north London has been sentenced to life imprisonment. Deekan Paul Singh Vig, 54, was convicted following a trial at the Old Bailey court last month and was sentenced for a minimum term of 18 years before being considered for parole at the same court on Friday.

The Met Police said Vig’s father, 86-year-old Arjan Singh Vig, lived at the same home as him in Southgate, north London, where police were called to a disturbance in October 2021. Despite the efforts of emergency services, Arjan was pronounced dead at the scene, the police said.

N Korea fires long-range missile

SEOUL, FEB 18 (AP) : North Korea on Saturday fired a long-range missile from its capital into the sea off Japan, according to its neighbours, a day after it threatened to take strong measures against South Korea and the U.S. over their joint military exercises.

According to the South Korean and Japanese militaries, the missile was fired on a high angle, apparently to avoid reaching the neighbours’ territories, and travelled about 900 kilometers (560 miles) at a maximum altitude of 5,700 kilometers (3,500 miles) during an hourlong flight.

The details were similar to North Korea’s Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile test flight in November, which experts said demonstrated potential to reach the U.S. mainland if fired on a normal trajectory.

Japanese government spokesperson Hirokazu Matsuno said no damage has been reported from the missile, which landed within Japan’s exclusive economic zone, about 200 kilometers (125 miles) west of Oshima

island. Oshima lies off the western coast of the northernmost main island of Hokkaido.

North Korea’s Foreign Ministry on Friday threatened with “unprecedently” strong action against its rivals, after South Korea announced a series of planned military exercises with the United States aimed at sharpening their response to the North’s growing threats.

The office of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said his national security director, Kim Sung-han, presided over an emergency security meeting where

members described the launch as a “serious” provocation that violates U.N. Security Council resolutions and escalates regional tensions.

They denounced North Korea for accelerating its nuclear arms development despite signs of worsening economic problems and food insecurity, saying such actions would bring only tougher international sanctions. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Tokyo was closely communicating with Washington and Seoul over the launch, which he described as “an

Russian envoy says West determined to destroy Russia

UNITED NATIONS, FEB 18 (AP): A week before the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Kremlin’s UN ambassador claimed that the West is driven by its determination to destroy Russia and declared: “We had no choice other than to defend our country — defend it from you, to defend our identity and our future.”

Western ambassadors shot back, accusing Russia of using a Security Council meeting it called on lessons learned from the failure to resolve the conflict between Ukraine and Russianbacked separatists that began in 2014 to justify what

France’s U.N. Ambassador Nicolas De Riviere called “the unjustifiable” – Russia’s invasion of its smaller neighbor on Feb. 24, 2022.

Friday’s meeting in the council — the only international venue where Russia regularly faces Ukraine and its Western supporters — put a spotlight on the deep

chasm between the warring parties as the conflict moves into its second year with no end in sight, tens of thousands of casualties on both sides, and new military offensives expected. Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia accused Western nations including France and Germany of “holding back” on implementing the Minsk agreements brokered by the two countries to end the conflict between Ukraine and the separatists in Luhansk and Donetsk in the country’s mostly Russian-speaking industrial east that flared in April 2014 after Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

act of violence that escalates provocation toward the international order.”

The launch was North Korea’s first since Jan. 1, when it test-fired a shortrange weapon. It followed a massive military parade in Pyongyang last week, where troops rolled out more than a dozen ICBMs as leader Kim Jong Un watched in delight from a balcony. The unprecedented number of missiles underscored a continuation of expansion of his country’s military capabilities despite limited resources while negotiations with Washington remain stalemated. Those missiles included a new system experts say is possibly linked to the North’s stated desire to acquire a solidfuel ICBM. North Korea’s existing ICBMs, including Hwasong-17s, use liquid propellants that require prelaunch injections and cannot remain fueled for prolonged periods. A solid-fuel alternative would take less time to prepare and is easier to move around on vehicles, providing less opportunity to be spotted.

Ukrainian troops holding Bakhmut line demand weapons as world powers meet

NEAR BAKHMUT, FEB 17 (AGENCIES): Ukrainian soldiers fighting to hold off a Russian push on the small eastern city of Bakhmut pleaded for more weapons from the outside world as senior Western leaders met in Munich on Friday to assess the yearlong war shaking Europe, reports Reuters.

“Give us more military equipment, more weapons, and we will deal with the Russian occupier, we will destroy them,” said Dmytro, a serviceman standing in the snow near Bakhmut, echoing a plea by his president to the Munich conference.

Nearly one year into the invasion, President Vladimir Putin’s troops are intensifying assaults in the east.

Ukraine is planning a spring counter-offensive, for which it wants more, heavier and longer-range weapons from its Western allies.

al economy and made Putin a pariah in the West.

He says he is fighting for Russia’s security against an aggressively expanding NATO alliance, but Kyiv and its allies cast the invasion as a colonial-style land grab in Ukraine, formerly part of the Russian-dominated Soviet Union.

On the freezing battlefield, Ukrainian servicemen showed a visiting journalist the benefits of Australianprovided Bushmaster armoured vehicles in an area

where Russian soldiers have become bogged down in months of fighting to take Bakhmut, which Russia’s Wagner mercenary group is attacking. The vehicles shield soldiers from bullets, enable evacuations of wounded and give cover for reconnaissance, Dmytro added. “There were cases when anti-tank mines were detonated, and the soldiers only received contusions. There were no serious injuries to the soldiers. It has worked very well.”

Death toll from Islamic State attack in Syria at least 53

BEIRUT, FEB 18 (AP):

The death toll from an attack by the Islamic State group against an army checkpoint and people collecting truffles in central Syria has risen to at least 53, most of them civilians, state media and an opposition war monitor reported Saturday. The attack near the central town of Sukhna on Friday was the deadliest by the extremist group since so far this year, the Britainbased Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor said. The Observatory said the attack targeted a Syrian army checkpoint and people collecting wild truffles nearby, killing 68 people, including 61 civilians. It

The statement released late Friday came hours after officials said the U.S. has finished efforts to recover the remnants of the large balloon that was shot down Feb. 4 off the coast of South Carolina, and analysis of the debris so far reinforces conclusions that it was a Chinese spy balloon. Officials said the U.S. believes that Navy, Coast Guard and FBI personnel collected all of that balloon’s debris off the ocean floor, which included key

equipment from the payload that could reveal what information it was able to monitor and collect.

White House national security spokesman John Kirby said a significant amount of debris was recov-

ered and it included “electronics and optics” from the payload. He declined to say what, if anything, the U.S. has learned from the wreckage so far.

U.S. Northern Command said in a statement

forces.

A senior security source said five terrorists were killed during the operation. He said three were killed in the long gun battle while two blew themselves up which also caused some damage to one floor of the building.

that the recovery operations ended Thursday and the final pieces are on their way to the FBI lab in Virginia for analysis. It said air and maritime restrictions off South Carolina have been lifted.

Northern Command said later that the decision to end the search for the objects shot down over Alaska and Lake Huron came after the U.S. and Canada “conducted systematic searches of each area using a variety of capabilities, including airborne imagery and sensors, surface sensors and inspections, and subsurface scans, and did not locate debris.” Northern Command said air and maritime safety perimeters were also being lifted at both those sites.

said IS fighters reached the area on motorcycles. On Friday, it reported that the attack killed 46. The Observatory, which tracks Syria’s conflict, said the IS gunmen took advantage of the Feb.

6 earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria killing tens

of thousands of people to carry out their deadly attack. The attention in Syria has been mostly focused on the earthquake over the past two weeks.

Syria’s state news agency, SANA, quoted the head of the general hospital in the central town of

Palmyra as saying that they have received the bodies of 46 civilians and seven soldiers. Despite their defeat in Syria in March 2019, Islamic State sleeper cells still conduct attacks around Syria and Iraq, where they once declared a “caliphate.”

On Friday, the U.S. military said a helicopter raid led by its forces in northeast Syria left a senior leader with the Islamic State group dead and four American service members wounded. It identified the killed IS commander as Hamza al-Homsi. Joint operations between the U.S. military and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces are common in northeast and eastern Syria along the border with Iraq.

China representative met with protests on visit to Taiwan

TAIPEI, FEB 18 (AP): A visit by a Chinese official at the invitation of the Taiwanese capital’s newly elected China-friendly mayor has drawn protests on the selfruled island.

The head of Shanghai city’s Taiwan Affairs Office, Li Xiaodong, arrived Saturday morning for a three-day visit that marks a rare point of contact between the sides.

China deems Taiwan a part of its territory to be conquered by force if necessary and has been courting proChinese media and politicians on the island to further its unification agenda.

quo of de-facto independence while still maintaining close economic and social ties with the mainland.

Taiwan’s democratic system allows broad leeway for local governments to act without central authority.

Taipei recently elected Chiang Wan-an from the op-

position Nationalist Party as mayor. Dozens of protesters gathered at Sunshan Airport in downtown Taipei, while representatives of pro-China minority parties shouted welcomes. Neither Li or any members of his delegation issued any arrival statements.

KARACHI, FEB 18 (PTI):

Five heavily-armed militants of the Tehreek-e-Taliban (Pakistan) have been killed after security forces managed to secure back control of the head office building of the Karachi Police Chief which came under a daring attack by the militants in the country’s most populous city.

The nearly four-hourlong operation to seize back control of the five-storey building came to a dramatic end around 10.50 pm with four other people including two police constables, a rangers personnel and a civilian also killed in the heavy exchange of firing that took place between the TTP militants and security

Sindh government spokesperson Murtaza Wahab said on Twitter he could confirm that the Karachi Police Office (KPO) building has been cleared. “Three terrorists have been neutralised,” he said. He added four other people comprising the two policemen, rangers personnel and a civilian had been killed while 17 others were admitted to hospital with injuries. There were conflicting reports on the number of terrorists who attacked and entered the building but police sources put their number down to eight.

The N. Longidang Union Wokha Town and N. Longidang Village Youth Organization vehemently condemned the criminal and remorseless activities of some unknown miscreants who planted a powerful lethal bomb inside the garage (under the floor of the Vehicle) at GHS Colony belonging to one of its bonafide member, Mr. Lumdemo Ngullie on 15th Feb, 2023 at around 11:00 pm. As a consequence of the explosion, it has damaged his vehicle and also endangered the safety and well-being of his family. The Union strongly resolved in an emergency meeting that such act of despicable crime is unacceptable and has no place in a civilized society. The union has faith and trust upon the law enforcement agencies to investigate and bring to book the culprits according to the rule of law so that such crime against the society is contained.

Ayushmann appointed UNICEF India National Ambassador

UNICEF India on Saturday named Hindi film star Ayushmann Khurrana as a National Ambassador.

The 38-year-old actor had earlier served as UNICEF India’s Celebrity Advocate for ending violence against children and the broader child rights agenda.

As a National Ambassador, Khurrana will support UNICEF in ensuring rights of every child “to survive, thrive, be protected as well as promoting their voice and agency in decisions that concern them”, a press release stated.

The actor said he is honoured to take his advocacy for children’s rights further with UNICEF India as a National Ambassador.

“I am passionate about the issues facing children and adolescents in India.

As UNICEF’s Celebrity Advocate, I have interacted with children and spoken on internet safety, cyberbullying, mental health, and gender equality.

Scientists discover new antioxidants in chicken, pork

Ateam of Japanese researchers has discovered new antioxidants in chicken, pork and beef that may help in relieving fatigue and preventing dementia.

“In this new role with UNICEF, I will keep up a strong voice for children’s rights, especially for the most vulnerable supporting solutions for issues that impact them the most,” the actor said in a statement.

Cynthia McCaffrey, UNICEF India Representative, said Khurrana’s work as a Celebrity Advocate had helped them amplify and drive the work of protecting the rights of children.

“He is one of India’s biggest movie stars, and we

are thrilled that he is using that powerful voice to stand with children and challenging harmful social norms and gender stereotypes. And it is a voice that resonates with UNICEF’s work and ethos in its sensitivity and passion. “We look forward to working with him on the most critical child rights issues of our time – ending violence, mental well-being, and gender equality– and towards a better future for every child,” McCaffrey said. Aspectacular trio of merging galaxies in the constellation Boötes takes center stage in this image from the NASA/ ESA Hubble Space Telescope. These three galaxies are set on a collision course and will eventually merge into a single larger galaxy, distorting one another’s spiral structure through mutual gravitational interaction in the process. An unrelated foreground galaxy appears to float serenely near this scene, and the smudged shapes of much more distant galaxies are visible in the background.

This colliding trio –known to astronomers as SDSSCGB 10189 – is a relatively rare combination of three large star-forming

galaxies lying within only 50,000 light-years of one another. While that might sound like a safe distance, for galaxies this makes them extremely close neighbors. Our own galactic neighbors are much further away; Andromeda, the nearest large galaxy to the Milky Way, is more than 2.5 million lightyears away from Earth. This image comes from an observation designed to help astronomers understand the origin of the largest, most massive galaxies in the universe. These galactic behemoths are called Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) and – as the name suggests – are defined as the brightest galaxies in any given galaxy cluster. (ESA)

Types of cooking oils and how to use them

You probably use cooking oil in lots of homemade meals. But have you ever wondered what sets different oils apart from one another?

?All oils aren’t created equal, and there are a few things to consider when choosing which ones to cook with. The uses, flavor, and types of fat that oils contain are just a few things to think about.

How to Choose a Cooking Oil

Some people shy away from adding extra fat into their cooking, but using an oil that contains healthy fats will enhance your diet, as long as you use it in moderation.

First, you should stick to the guidelines your doctor gave you. Your body needs some fat, but fat is rich in calories (9 calories per gram), and some types of fat are healthier than others. It’s possible to get too much, even of the “good” fats. Your doctor, or a registered dietitian, can let you know what limits you should follow.

Also, know that each oil has a unique chemical makeup, so some will be more suited for sauteing, some for searing, and others for no-heat preparations, like salad dressings. When cooking, always keep in mind an oil’s smoke point -- that’s the temperature at which the oil begins to smoke and produce dangerous fumes and free radicals. Generally, the more refined the oil, the higher the smoke point. When an oil smokes or burns, any healthy fats and antioxidants burn along with it. The oil will also produce free radicals, which can be damaging and can cause health problems, especially if you use burned oil

on a regular basis. Different cooking oils have their own smoke point temperature.

Types of Fats in

Cooking Oils

Oil has healthy or unhealthy fats. Some oils have a mix of these fats, so get familiar with them to find the best option for you.

Saturated fats. These typically aren’t healthy. They’re mostly found in dairy products, fatty meats, or coconut and palm oils.

Trans fats. These are commonly found in processed food. Stay away from trans fats, or eat them sparingly. Check grocery labels to find out how much trans fats are in packaged food.

Monounsaturated fats. You can find these healthy fats in raw nuts, olives, and avocados. Monounsaturated fats can also be found in extra virgin olive oil, peanut oil, and avocado oil.

Polyunsaturated fats. These fats, which include omega-6 and omega-3s, are healthy fatty acids. You can get them from oily fish like salmon and mackerel, as well as chia seeds and walnuts. They’re especially good for your brain.

Types of Cooking

Oils

You can find the most popular oils in most grocery

stores.

Canola oil. This common oil is extracted from the rapeseed plant. Its neutral taste and high smoke point make it a good choice for frying, sauteing, and baking. It’s also used to make margarine. It doesn’t have as much blood pressurelowering omega-3 as extravirgin olive oil, but canola oil boasts one of the lowest levels of saturated fats. That can make it a good choice to help your heart health.

It also has alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which your body converts to essential fatty acids. That makes it a great supplement to a vegetarian diet.

Olive oil. Olive fruit and pits are crushed to make this fragrant, fruity tasting oil that’s green or yellow in color. Extra virgin olive oil -- the least refined of all types of olive oil -- has the lowest smoke point. It’s also healthy for the heart. Bottles simply labelled “olive oil” are a mixture of refined and extra virgin oils.

Coconut oil. The buzz on this tasty, trendy oil is that it may have disease-preventing properties, but the blood pressure-conscious should beware: This oil packs the highest amount of saturated fat. It’s easy

to be tempted by a great flavor boost, but too much saturated fat is a health nono. Stick with traditional, nontropical vegetable oils. Olive and canola are better options.

If you want to give coconut oil a try, use it sparingly for light sauteing or low-heat baking and in sauces. It has a medium smoke point.

Vegetable oil. This is typically a mixed, neutraltasting oil. Its nutrition varies depending on the particular blend. It’s often a mix of soybean, palm, sunflower, safflower, and canola oils. It usually has a medium-high smoke point and is quite versatile.

Avocado oil. This oil has a sweet aroma and is quite healthy for you. It contains mainly monounsaturated fatty acids that can help lower inflammation. It also has a high smoke point, making it good for frying and searing.

Sunflower oil. This comes from sunflower seeds. It’s a refined oil high in omega-6 fatty acids. It’s good for your heart health and it can lower inflammation. It mainly has monounsaturated fats, and its smoke point is high. Look for its high-oleic versions to reap

Imidazole dipeptides (IDPs), which are abundant in meat and fish, are substances produced in the bodies of various animals, including humans.

However, the physiological mechanism by which IDPs exhibit these activities had not been determined previously.

A research team led by Professor Hideshi Ihara from the Osaka Metropolitan University was the first to discover 2-oxo-imidazole-containing dipeptides (2-oxo-IDPs) -- which have one more oxygen atom than normal IDPs.

They found that they are the most common variety of IDP derivatives in the body.

The researchers also found that they have remarkably high antioxidant activity, according to the findings published in the

journal Antioxidants.

“We hope that this research method, which enables advanced analysis of 2-oxo-IDPs, will be applied not only to basic biology but also to medicine, agriculture and pharmacy, where it will help improve people’s health and prevent diseases,” said Ihara.

In the study, the re -

searchers established a method for selective and highly sensitive detection of five types of 2-oxo-IDPs using mass spectrometry. Using this method, they revealed for the first time that beef, pork, chicken and other meat contain antioxidants, not only IDPs but a variety of different 2-oxo-IDPs. (IANS)

Action choreographer Casey O’Neill, who has worked with Hollywood star Tom Cruise in films like ‘Jack Reacher’, the ‘Mission Impossible’ series and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, along with having worked

on Marvel Cinematic Universe, has drawn parallels between Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Tom Cruise for their dedication to their craft, passion for cinema and the urge to push the envelope. Casey designed the

action in the SRK, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham-starrer ‘Pathaan’, which is currently smashing records at the box-office in the third week of its release.

Talking about the remarkable similarity that he has seen between Tom and SRK, Casey said: “They are both true professionals in their craft and so talented. Tom Cruise is a fearless actor who lives and breathes his craft and wants to push the envelope when it comes to his body and his cinema to only entertain audiences. SRK is just the same.” (IANS)

all the benefits.

Peanut oil. It’s hearthealthy and tastes neutral. Refined peanut oil has a medium-high smoke point and is commonly used for frying. You can find unrefined peanut oil, too, though it’s quite rare. ?

Almond oil. If you’re looking for a distinctive, nutty flavor to add to a recipe, almond oil is tasty and typically low in saturated fat. Recent studies show that a diet rich in almonds may help reduce blood pressure. With its high smoke point, almond oil is good for searing and browning as well as on salads.

Other nut oils

Walnuts, pumpkins, pecans, and other nutty oils are showing up on fine dining menus and even grocery shelves. All of them have healthy fats for heart health benefits, including lowering blood pressure.

These are no-heat oils that aren’t great for cooking. Use them moderately in dressings.

Flaxseed and wheat germ oils are rich in omega-3 and omega-6, which may help lower blood pressure. These are also no-heat oils, making them good choices for salad dressings and dips. Just be sure to watch your portions.

Storing Cooking Oil

It’s best to buy cooking oils in amounts you’ll use within a month or two after opening them. Otherwise, they can go bad. If you’ve stored oil for a few months, check to see if the smell has changed.

Also, keep cooking oils in a cool and dark place, because heat and light can damage them.

ISL: Ten-man Jamshedpur FC stun Hyd FC

NEW DELHI, FEB 18 (IANS): A seven-minute triple-goal burst early in the first half helped Jamshedpur FC beat Hyderabad FC 3-2 despite playing most of the second half with just ten men in the Indian Super League (ISL) on Saturday.

Hyderabad FC made seven changes to their line-up. The new-look side made a slick start to the game, but it was a familiar name in Bartholomew Ogbeche who put them in front. The striker leaped between two defenders from a Rohit Danu corner to put his team 1-0 up in the 12th minute.

But Jamshedpur FC drew level in the 22nd minute, after moving the ball out wide to right-back Boris Singh. The winger’s high cross hung up at the far post, where Ritwik Das climbed above Reagan Singh to head it home.

A few minutes later, Harry Sawyer got on the end of a low cross from the left, which was saved acrobatically by Lalbiakhlua Jongte on his ISL debut. From the resulting corner, Sawyer’s header was deflected by Ogbeche’s outstretched arm,

and Jongte was sent the wrong way by Jay Thomas from the spot as Jamshedpur FC went ahead.

Things got even worse for Hyderabad FC, when Sawyer won an aerial duel in midfield to head the ball towards Daniel Chukwu in the 29th minute. Chukwu outmuscled Nim Dorjee to get a clear path

on goal, before chipping over Jongte from outside the box to make it 3-1. Hyderabad FC were given a way back into the game when Vishal Yadav’s slip during a goalkick put Javier Siverio oneon-one with him. Siverio was brought down by last man Eli Sabia, who was promptly sent off in the

56th minute.

The home side made four changes in the second half, with Joao Victor returning to action, but struggled to break through Jamshedpur FC’s defence.

That was until the 74th minute, when Ricky Lallawmawma’s hand made contact with the ball. Victor stepped up to take the

penalty, but Yadav went to his right to deny Hyderabad FC.

In the 79th minute, Abdul Anjukandan’s cross from the right found its way through traffic to Ogbeche at the far post, who brought it under control and managed to get power on his shot despite losing his footing. It bobbled off Yadav into the near post to give the home team another way back.

Ogbeche was at it again in the 84th minute, leaping in a similar fashion to his first goal, but unable to keep his header under the crossbar. That was the closest they would come to an equaliser before Yadav leaped to his left to save a Siverio header in the ninth minute of stoppage time.

The result didn’t have any bearing on the next stage of the tournament, but lifted Jamshedpur FC into ninth place ahead of East Bengal FC. Their last game of the season is at home against Odisha FC on February 22. Hyderabad FC will draw the curtains on this season’s league stage with an away game against Kerala Blasters on February 26.

Virat Kohli’s ‘unlucky’ lbw dismissal sparks debate

NEW DEL HI, FEB 18

(IANS): In India’s ongoing second Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, talismanic batter Virat Kohli endured an unlucky lbw dismissal which sparked a lengthy debate on social media.

In the second session of Day Two’s play, Kohli was trapped lbw by debutant left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann on the third ball of the 50th over. When Kohli took a review, the UltraEdge showed there was a huge spike when the ball was between bat and pad.

After seeing multiple replays to and fro, TV umpire Richard Illingworth concluded that the ball hit the pad first and Kohli had to return to the pavilion courtesy of the umpire’s call, falling six runs short of his fifty at his home ground and stared towards on-field umpire Nitin Menon too while on his walk towards the dressing room, with the vociferous crowd falling silent.

Kohli was also spotted very unhappy on watching

his wicket’s replay from the dressing room. Batting coach Vikram Rathour and head coach Rahul Dravid also looked very unhappy with the on-field umpire’s decision.

As per law 36.2.2 of the MCC Laws of Cricket, it says “In assessing point 36.1.3, if the ball makes contact with the striker’s person and bat simultaneously, this shall be considered as the ball having first touched the bat.”

Former Indian cricketers Wasim Jaffer and Abhinav Mukund opined that Kohli was unlucky to be given out lbw for 44. “That

wasn’t out to me. Too much doubt in there,” tweeted Jaffer.

“Didn’t Virat get out like this against SL at home last year? Both times I felt it was not out. Firstly it hit the bat, let’s not even get into how unlucky he is with the umpire’s call. Was shaping up nicely. India in a bit of trouble,” commented Mukund.

Coming to the match, India reached 179/7 in 62 overs at tea, trailing Australia by 84 runs. Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel are unbeaten on 11 and 28 respectively, with their stand currently at 40 off 67 balls.

Ranji final: Saurashtra in control; Unadkat, Sakariya bag 2 wkts each

KOLKATA, FEB 18 (PTI):

Saurashtra look poised to lift their second Ranji Trophy after skipper Jaydev Unadkat and Chetan Sakariya grabbed two wickets each to leave hosts Bengal struggling at 169 for four in their second innings on day three of the final at the Eden Gardens on Saturday.

While Bengal skipper Manoj Tiwary remained unbeaten on 57, the hosts are still 61 runs short of Saurashtra’s first-innings total of 404, and with both Saurashtra left-arm pace bowlers breathing fire, Unadkat’s side could well wrap up the game on Sunday.

Bengal’s pace-heavy attack looked ineffective in the morning as Saurashtra, continuing from where they had left on Friday evening -317/5 -- added 87 more runs to take their score past 400.

BATHURST, FEB 18 (AGENCIES): Kenya won the World Cross Country Championships 2023 mixed relay gold in Bathurst, Australia, on Saturday, reports Reuters.

The quartet of Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Mirriam Cherop, Daniel Kyumbe Munguti, and Brenda Chebet avenged Kenya’s defeat four years ago to regain the title.

Chebet, the World Under-20 1500m silver medallist, anchored Kenya brilliantly to ensure they reclaim the title.

After trailing in the first leg, run by Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Miriam Cherop gave Kenya a comfortable lead. Daniel Munguti then maintained the lead over Australia in the last metres to hand over the ribbon to Chebet, who ran a confi-

dent final leg to clinch the gold medal.

Ethiopia and Australia won the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Kenya clocked 23:14s to win the race, with Ethiopia notching 23:21s to finish second. Host Australia was third with 23:26s, with South Africa, who had Caster Semenya on the anchor lane, finishing fourth.

Though overnight batters Arpit Vasavada (81) and Chirag Jani (60) perished quickly, tail-enders Prerak Mankad (33) and Dharmendrasinh Jadeja (29) gave Saurashtra the winning edge. To add to Bengal’s woes, they gave away 35 extras.

Coming in to bat in the second innings, Bengal had a harrowing start with the pace duo of Sakariya (2/50) and Unadkat (2/47)

rattling the top-order to reduce them to 47/3 in the post-lunch session. Still trailing by 183 runs, an innings defeat loomed large when the veteran duo of Anustup Majumdar (61) and Tiwary came together and gave the 1,000-odd fans some hope with their 99-run partnership.

At close, Shahbaz Ahmed (13 batting) was giving Tiwary company at the crease. Bengal can only hope for a magical turnaround in quest of their maiden Ranji Trophy title in 32 years.

The onus is on Tiwary and Shahbaz, the last recognised batting pair for Bengal, to make an improbable turnaround.

Earlier pace bowler

Mukesh Kumar emerged the most successful Bengal bowler on Saturday, finishing with figures of 4/111 and getting rid of both wellset overnight batters Vasavada and Jani.

Having managed just three wickets on Friday, the much-vaunted Bengal attack wrapped up Saurashtra’s last five wickets in two hours and six minutes in the first session on Saturday. But it seemed too little, too late as the host bowlers had allowed Saurashtra to take their score past 400.

Vasavada failed to add

to his overnight total of 81 and nicked an away-going delivery. Jani was dismissed when Mukesh got the ball to swing away after pitching. The ball made a feathertouch contact with Jani’s bat and sailed to the wicketkeeper.

Akash Deep hit the deck hard to bounce out Prerak Mankad with a ball that sharply cut back in and clipped the batter’s gloves. He got his third wicket, dismissing Unadkat (4) cheaply. But from 369/9, Saurashtra raced to 404 with

their last pair of Parth Bhut (14 not out) and Dharmendrasinh Jadeja (29) frustrating the Bengal bowlers. Pressed into the opener’s role, Bengal debutant Sumanta Gupta showed he still has a lot of work to do, as he poked at a Sakariya delivery to be caught in the slip cordon. Bengal’s biggest letdown was India A regular Abhimanyu Easwaran (12) whose horror show with the bat continued, done in by a length delivery that swung away. Bengal’s crisis man

Anustup Majumdar looked in control and soaked up the pressure. But Unadkat dismissed the veteran cricketer when he chased an away-going delivery to be caught at gully. Tiwary and Shahbaz then survived some anxious moments to keep the faint hopes alive. Saurashtra had won their maiden Ranji Trophy title beating Bengal three years ago at Rajkot. Brief scores: Bengal 174 and 169/4; 52.5 overs (Anustup Majumdar 61, Manoj Tiwary 57 batting).

ROME (ITALY), FEB 18

(IANS ): Serie A leaders Napoli showed no signs of slowing down as they sailed to a 2-0 comfortable win away to Sassuolo, with two splendid strikes from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Victor Osimhen.

Luciano Spalletti’s side has looked electric and exhilarating on the pitch this season and headed into Mapei Stadium on Friday night with six wins on the bounce.

Kvaratskhelia, who shot to fame after joining Napoli last summer, showed his talents again as he broke the deadlock in the 12th minute with a moment of magic when the Georgian started the move from the midfield and dribbled forward to ride tackles, he feinted a curler to the corner but instead finished it with a daisy-cutter, reports news agency Xinhua.

Center forward Osimhen continued to cause havoc as he rattled the woodwork in the 26th minute and got his name on the

scoresheet seven minutes later when the Nigerian trapped a long pass with a fantastic first touch, resisting a challenge before smashing it in from an extremely tight angle. It was Osimhen’s seventh consecutive league game on target, taking his tally of goals to 18.

Sassuolo found the back of the net before the interval, but Armand Lauriente’s goal was wiped out due to offside. Napoli’s

Giovanni Simone also saw his header in the dying minute cancelled for the same reason. With the win, Napoli temporarily extended their lead over second-placed Inter Milan to 18 points, but they sweat over Osimhen’s injury as he limped off in the closing phase, which may add concerns ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash against Eintracht Frankfurt next Tuesday.

Women T20 WC: Eng beat India by 11 runs

GQEBERHA (SOUTH AFRICA), FEB 18 (PTI): India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana’s half-century (52 off 41 balls) and an entertaining 34-ball 47 from Richa Ghosh went in vain as India lost their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup group match to England by 11 runs here on Saturday.

The cheap dismissals of opener Shafali Verma (8), Jemimah Rodrigues (13) and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (4) contributed to the defeat as India could never recover from the toporder collapse.

Earlier, India had restricted England to 151 for seven with medium pacer Renuka Singh (5/15) registering her best bowling figures in the format after India opted to bowl.

Her five-wicket haul gave India hope that they could defeat the Heather Knight-led side, but Sarah Glenn (2/27 in 4 overs) and Sophie Ecclestone’s (1/11 in 3 overs) restrictive bowling didn’t allow

2nd Test: Aus lead by 62 runs after Axar-Ashwin fight back

NEW DELHI, FEB 18 (PTI): Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin added another significant chapter to India’s lower-order fightbacks as their priceless 114-run eighth-wicket partnership put the hosts on an even keel against Australia on an engrossing second day of the second Test here on Saturday.

Thanks to Axar’s invaluable 74 off 115 balls and Ashwin’s 37 off 71 balls, India, who were in complete mess at 139/7, recovered well to end their first innings at 262 in 83.3 overs, just one run behind Australia’s 263.

At stumps, Australia were 61/1 in their second innings, taking a handy 62run lead.

Had the two allrounders not bailed the hosts out, Australia would have been far more happy than they actually were at stumps on Saturday.

Travis Head (39 batting), opening for a concussed David Warner, and Marnus Labuschagne (16 batting) attacked the Indian spinners, knowing that defending wasn’t an option. They picked up a handful of boundaries in

the process.

As has been the script over the past few years, batter No.6 (Jadeja), No.8 (Ashwin) and No.9 (Axar) were at the forefront of the recovery act after specialist batters were caught in two minds on whether to attack or defend against the Australian spinners led by Nathan Lyon (5/67 in 29 overs), who grabbed his 22nd five-wicket haul. There were no demons in the track but a few cracks on the good- and short-of-good-length spots on both sides of the strip led the ball to keep low.

IPL 2023 will be the close of MS Dhoni’s career with CSK: Hayden

NEW DELHI, FEB 18

(IANS): With the BCCI announcing the schedule of the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the focus is now on the tournament with fans and experts discussing various issues related to it.

Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden believes this could be the last time Mahendra Singh Dhoni will step into the field as a player.

Speaking exclusively on Star Sports following the announcement of the TATA IPL 2023 schedule, Hayden on Friday talked about the reception Chennai Super Kings captain Dhoni will receive when he walks onto the field at Chepauk after almost three years. “It will be an amazing moment. I think last year, we were all under the

leg-before on the frontfoot, barring skipper Rohit Sharma, who was bowled playing across the line. The worrying trend was India batters playing the Australian spinners with their pads as the first line of defence.

However, Axar and Ashwin applied the strategy to consistently counterattack the bowlers despite the fall of seven wickets.

Instead of plonking the front-foot forward, they used the pace of the deliveries from Todd Murphy (2/53 in 18 overs) and debutant left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann (2/72 in 21.3 overs), to score

runs.

Axar got his third fifty -- and a second consecutive one in the series -- with a six over cow corner off Kuhnemann and another over extra cover off Murphy. He also hit a six off Lyon, but his standout shot was a back-foot punch through the covers off Pat Cummins.

Ashwin too was determined at the other end and did not let go of the scoring opportunities as Australia lost the initiative after dominating the better part of the first one-and-ahalf sessions on Saturday.

India lost wickets in a heap in the morning session before Virat Kohli (44 off 84 balls) and Ravindra Jadeja (26 off 74 balls) steadied the innings in the post-lunch session by adding 59 runs for the fifth wicket.

But once Murphy, playing his second Test, and debutant Kuhnemann dismissed the duo in quick succession, things went downhill quickly for the hosts.

The difference one saw between the Australian spin attack in Nagpur and Delhi could be due to the

pace of the Kotla track.

Credit must be given to stalwart Lyon and the two young spinners for keeping up the pressure despite losing three referrals in the first hour of day two.

Kohli, who played with a lot of composure and was looked good for a big score, would consider himself unlucky that he had to head back due to an umpire’s call.

Kuhnemann’s arm ball seemed to be brushing the leg-bail and India’s No. 1 batter looked distraught as there was no conclusive evidence on whether the ball hit the pad first or the bat.

Before that, a Murphy slider caught India’s most consistent Test batter Jadeja plumb in front.

In the morning session, KL Rahul’s bad patch continued while Cheteshwar Pujara had a forgettable first innings outing in his 100th Test.

Brief scores: Australia 263 and 61/1 in 12 overs (Travis Head 39; Ravindra Jadeja 1/23) lead India 262 all out in 83.3 overs (Axar Patel 74, Virat Kohli 44; Nathan Lyon 5/67, Todd Murphy 2/53) by 62 runs.

impression that will MSD come back again. At the close of the IPL season, he made that huge comment to say that he will be back.

“Now, what that means for all that Yellow Army is that Chennai suddenly galvanized a tad around the superior leader, who has done it for so long. This will, most certainly, I think, be the close of his IPL career. So, those few games at the start are not only going to be key for the fans, his performance is going to be key for CSK this season,” said Hayden.

Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar agreed with his assessment that Dhoni will be the key for CSK.

“Look, having watched T20 cricket over the years, especially with the IPL and the kind of pressures that

teams feel, I believe that you can have one player in your team on pure leadership.

“MS Dhoni doesn’t play regularly, so his impact with the bat is not going to be as much as it was in the prime, but somebody like MS Dhoni, with his leadership experience, you can have him in the team, to make a difference with his leadership. And this is a guy who’s had a team that was called the ‘Old Men Playing IPL Together’ and they won that particular season,” said Manjrekar.

Dhoni had stepped down as captain before the start of the 2022 edition and handed over the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja. However, with the team struggling to win matches, Jadeja handed over the captaincy back to Dhoni.

Arsenal twice fought back from a goal behind to
