Corruption starts from grassroots level: Kevipodi

Correspondent

KOHIMA, MAR 4(NPN): Independent candidate from 14 Southern Angami-1 Assembly Constituency, Kevipodi Sophie, on Saturday said that problem of corruption was deeply rooted and starts from grassroots level.

Taking to Nagaland Post at his residence here on Saturday, Sophie, who defeated NDPP candidate Medo Yokha by a margin of 177 votes, disclosed that the demand for money by the voters were so high that one cannot meet their needs.

He said that people would come in groups or

in the name of clans and ask for money ranging from Rs.3-5 lakh. Sophie said that if money factor was not in the frame, politicians would not be as corrupted as the public portrayed them. He explained that after looting the candidate, the voters then turn around and blame the government

for the unfinished development works.

Calling for the need to create more awareness, he said that even if churches preached on clean election, until and unless it was implemented, the people would turn deaf to their preaching.

Sophie stated that changing the mindset of the people was the only solution. He said that politicians were only partly to be blamed for the corruption, adding that voters were largely to blame.

Sophie, former president of Southern Angami Public Organization (SAPO), said that one of the biggest challenges faced

during the assembly elections 2023 was the ruling party factor, which had been set up from the grassroots level. However, in his case, Sophie said he had only one full month for preparation.

Sharing his priorities, Sophie said he would consult with the constituency people concerning schemes or projects, which were needed by the people. He also emphasised on focusing on youth empowerment and welfare for the widows and widowers by providing them financial grant.

Sophie also affirmed to extend unconditional support to the new government.

KOHIMA, MAR 4 (NPN):

Lhisemia khel (L. Khel) from Kohima village celebrated the Angami festival Sekrenyi at TM government higher secondary school, here on Saturday.

The festival was organised jointly by Lhisemia Youth Organization (LYO) and Lhisemia Students Union (LSU) with Lhisemia council chairman, Ayie Yhome as the main speaker.

In his message, Yhome said organising the festival was important since with the change in time and lifestyle of the people, the present and upcoming generations were gradually losing the knowledge and connection

with the history.

Giving a description of the wooden bed used in the olden times called ‘Yakouzhü’, which were carved out from one massive tree, Yhome said, knowing how people endured nature and survived even the harshest living conditions should be good lessons for the youngsters.

Pointing at the host of traditional items assembled at the living space replicating regular houses in the past, he said knowing such items was essential in order to pass on the knowledge to the future generations.

Sharing his opinion on the observance of the festival, Yhome pointed out that one should be diligent in their Christian life; however, he

said commemorating the event should not be misconstrued as reverting to the olden way of life.

He said people in the olden times celebrated the festival with abundance of food items especially rice wines, which were used in very limited and as a nourishing beverage. He pointed out that people nowadays tend to abuse it and therefore too much indulgence in the use of such alcoholic beverages do not conform to the Christian way of life.

In this regard, he said festival could be observed in a pompous manner even without abusing such alcoholic beverages. Earlier, the programme

was chaired by LSU 75th anniversary organising committee convenor, Dzüvinguzo Mepfhüo, elderly blessing was pronounced by L.Khel head GB, Krutuolie Yhome while greetings was conveyed by LYO president, Mhasimhalie (Matthew) Yhome.

Special numbers were presented by LSU, Khrierei Krotho and Seyiekruonuo Yhome while vote of thanks was proposed by Dziesekhrietuo Khruomo.

The celebration was marked by traditional games including wooden cart race, top spinning battle, bamboo stilt race, war cry competition, high jump and folk song presentations.

Drama over govt formation continues in Meghalaya

PM to attend swearing-in ceremony on Mar 7

SHILLO NG, MARCH 4 (IANS/CORRESPONDENT): Even as NPP leader Conrad Sangma staked claim to form the government in Meghalaya, a drama continued in the hill state on Saturday as well.

Sangma’s National People’s Party (NPP) won 26 seats while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that bagged two seats extended its support to the NPP on the day of announcement of the result. Two Independents and two MLAs of Hill State Peoples Democratic Party (HSPDP) also lent their support to the NPP.

However, the HSPDP, in a letter shot to the Megha-

l aya Governor, claimed it had not authorised the party MLAs to support the NPP in the government formation.

HSPDP president K.P. Pangniang and secretary Panborlang Ryntathiang stated in the letter: “HSPDP did not authorise the two MLAs -- Methodius Dkhar and Shakliar Warjri to lend support to the formation of the government as we have seen through press/media report.”

A copy of the letter was also sent to Conrad Sangma.

The NPP is yet to react or respond to the matter. When IANS approached the party spokesperson, he said: “The MLAs have already supported us. We have the numbers to form the government.” In the 60-member assembly house in Meghalaya, the support of 31 MLAs is required to form the government.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, Prestone Tynsong, former deputy chief minister of Meghalaya and leader of the NPP, spoke about the recent arson attacks on the residences of the elected representatives.

Tynsong expressed his “deep concern” over the illegal pursuits of the outlaws attempting to undermine the state’s law and order.

On the other hand, two groups in Meghalaya -- Hyn-

two MLAs went ahead and supported the NPP-BJP coalition.

Tynsong said that those indulging in such incidents must respect the people’s mandate.

He blamed the Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) and the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) for it.

SHILLONG, MAR 4 (PTI):

HSPDP MLA Methodius

Dkhar’s office in Shillong was set on fire allegedly by members of his own party as he supported the NPP-BJP coalition, senior NPP leader Prestone Tynsong said on Saturday.

Dkhar along with party MLA Shakliar Warjri on Friday pledged support to the NPP-BJP alliance, which staked claim to form the next government in the state under the leadership of

8

Conrad K Sangma.

Tynsong, the outgoing deputy chief minister, told PTI that angry supporters of Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) went to Dkhar’s office in the Laitumkhrah area of the city on Friday night and set it on fire.

“Firefighters reached there on time and doused the flames,” he said.

The HSPDP decided to form an alliance with the TMC and Congress, but its

niewtrep Youth Council and Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation, staged a demonstration on Saturday against the two HSPDP MLAs for supporting the NPP in the government formation. Also, the two organisations have given a deadline of March 7 for the MLAs to withdraw support from the NPP. The two HSPDP MLAs who chose not to assist the regional parties in creating a government without the NPP were denounced during a conference held in Motphran by the HYC.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new NPPled government in Meghalaya at the Raj Bhavan at 11 am on March 7, designated Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said on Saturday.

IMPHAL, MAR 4: A mob allegedly attacked a police team deputed to apprehend a suspected criminal, injuring at least 10 policemen and damaging eight police vehicles.

In the follow up action, the police arrested 10 persons allegedly involved in the deadly attack after taking control of the mob using tear gas shells and mock bombs that injured several protesters. Properties of as many as six houses were also damaged in the clash reported in the Moijing area of Thoubal district on Friday night.

On Friday evening, a combined team of Heingang police station of Imphal East and police commandos attached with the district police rushed to the Muslim-dominated Moijing area of Thoubal district to apprehend a person accused in two criminal cases.

A police source said that the combined team rushed to the area to nab one Md Sirajuddin, a resident of the Moijing village, who is wanted in two recent criminal cases.

He is one of the suspects involved in shooting dead one Md Mustakim on February 24 last at Kairang of Imphal East and also alleged attempt to kill a driver identified as Md Noor Khan who was rescued by the police from

When the combined team tried to the suspect (Md Sirajuddin) from near a shop along with one of his friends in his locality yesterday, around 6.30 pm, the duo escaped while the police were busy taking control of a large number of villagers who blocked their path to foil the arrest.

Reports said that a large number of villagers pelted stones towards the police personnel from different directions while the the police also fired several rounds of tear gas shells and mock bombs in defence.

At least 10 police personnel were injured in the clash. Windshields of two police vehicles were also damaged in the stone attack.

With additional force called in from the Thoubal district police headquarters, police eventually took control of the situation after which an operation to nab the suspects once again was carried out at late night.

tear gas shells and mock bombs to take control of the situation. Damages were caused to at least six houses by the police response.

After hours of struggle, the police took control of the situation and apprehended 10 persons allegedly involved in the attack on police personnel on duty.

The police, however, could not arrest the suspects including the one who was earlier picked up.

Among the several residents injured in the retaliatory action of the police, three were rushed to Thoubal district hospital with critical injuries, the report said.

On the other hand, residents strongly condemned the police alleging that locals rose up in protest as the police acted excessively to nab the suspects. Alleging that many of the apprehended residents were youths appearing the ongoing Class-X and Class-XII final exams, they demanded immediate release. They further accused police of ransacking belongings of the houses in the name of searching for the suspects and also used real bullets to take control of the situation.

Corruption doubles in ‘doubleengine’ government: Kejriwal

DAVANGERE (KARNATAKA), MAR 4 (PTI):

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday appealed to the people of poll-bound Karnataka to give his Aam Aadmi Party a chance to give a corruptionfree government for five years.

He also promised to give free electricity, quality education in government schools and good healthcare for the state’s people.

Addressing his maiden election public meeting in Karnataka, the AAP supremo said the party has zero tolerance for corruption as a minister and an MLA in party-ruled Punjab were jailed.

“We are staunch honest. We will give a corruption-free government. We will give free electricity, build good government schools and provide quality education,” Kejriwal said.

Assembly elections are due in Karnataka by May.

The AAP chief alleged that corruption in the

state doubled since the last assembly polls in 2018 and urged the people to vote in a ‘new engine’ government by throwing out the ‘doubleengine’ regime of the BJP.

Taking a dig at the ruling BJP in Karnataka, Kejriwal alleged that there is a 40 per cent commission government running in the state.

“The people of Karnataka are good but the leaders are not. They defamed and destroyed the state before the world. There is a 40 per cent commission government here in which 40 per cent cut is taken in every public work,” Kejriwal alleged.

In this context, he mentioned the recovery of Rs 8.23 crore unaccounted cash from Channagiri BJP MLA Madal Virupakshappa’s son Prashanth Kumar M V.

“Recently, Union Home Minister Amit Shah came to Karnataka and appealed to the people to give absolute majority in the upcoming assembly election so that a corruption-free government can be established in the state. Then, someone reminded him that already there is a BJP government in the state. I want to ask him why you could not eradicate corruption in the last four years,” the Delhi Chief Minister said.

He said the very next day after Shah flew back to Delhi, a BJP MLA’s son was caught with crores of unaccounted cash.

“That MLA and his son who hail from Davangere have not been arrested yet. Instead, Manish Sisodia was arrested,” Kejriwal said referring to Delhi Deputy

It’s government vs citizens: Kapil Sibal slams centre over defection law

NEW DELHI, MAR 4

(AGENCIES): Hitting out at the BJP-led central government, senior advocate and former Congress leader, Kapil Sibal, on Saturday said the Centre ‘overturned’ eight elected governments and that the 10th schedule has become a “defectors’ paradise”, reports ANI.

Claiming that the goverment had pitted itself against the citizens, Mr Sibal said the 10th Schedule of the Constitution, which is intended to stop political defections motivated by the promise of office, material advantages, or other similar factors, was being misused under the current regime.

The anti-defection statute, which was brought into force in 1985, was made stricter in 2002 to prevent political switchovers.

“The 10th schedule has become a defectors’ paradise. After 2014, 8 govern-

CM Sisodia’s arrest by the CBI in the excise policy scam case. He added that the raids at Sisodia’s house could not yield anything.

“They (BJP) alleged that Sisodia hushed up hundreds of crores of rupees. If that was true, then at least some crore of rupees should have been found but only Rs 10,000 was found,” Kejriwal claimed.

Taking a jibe at the BJP, the Delhi Chief Minister said the MLA in the dock may be given Padma Bhushan award next year. “All the criminals be it thieves, robbers, rowdies or rapists are absorbed in the BJP,” he further claimed.

After the BJP formed governments in Nagaland and Tripura and formed a coalition government in Meghalaya, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speech during the victory celebrations in Delhi asked people to stay away from ‘staunch honest people’, Kejriwal said.

India rejects OIC’s ‘unwarranted references’ on J&K

NEW DELHI, MAR 4

(PTI): The BJP sharpened its attack on Rahul Gandhi on Saturday, accusing the Congress leader of speaking against India in a foreign country and making such allegations about the conditions in the country which even Pakistan does not dare to do.

While the whole world is using good words to describe India, its main opposition leader is claiming on foreign soil that the country has been destroyed and democracy is no longer there while the judiciary and the media are in a bad shape, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra told reporters. He accused Gandhi of dissuading investors from investing in India at a time when the world is seeing the country as a “bright spot” and foreign firms are leaving China to do business here.

“In a big university, he is telling people bad things about India. While even Pakistan no longer dares say these things about India on a global forum, Gandhi is presenting it as a place

sion of the central government but the Enforcement Directorate can go anywhere without seeking the consent of the central government. The fact of the matter is that we are in a situation where we see the government versus the citizens but we want a government for citizens, not against,” he said.

ments were overturned. No other democratic country in the world does this by paying money or taking money from people,” Sibal said at a press conference in the national capital on Saturday.

He said the CBI cannot act without the permission of the central government while the Enforcement Directorate (ED) can go anywhere without seeking the permission of the central government.

Referring to recovery of `6 crore in alleged bribe money during a raid by the Karnataka Lokayukta on a sitting BJP MLA Maadal Virupakshappa’s son Prashant Maadal, the former Union minister said that no action has yet been taken against the MLA’s son.

GENEVA, MAR 4 (PTI): India has assailed the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for its “unwarranted references” to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and for allowing Pakistan to hijack and misuse its platform for carrying out Islamabad’s “nefarious agenda” against New Delhi. Exercising its right of reply at the High-Level Segment of 52nd session of the Human Rights Council, Seema Pujani, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of India in Geneva, outrightly rejected the reference to the statement made by the OIC representative.

“As regards the OIC statement, we reject the unwarranted references to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir,” Pujani said in a statement on Friday.

Bihar’s workers are our workers: Stalin reassures Nitish

where democracy is no longer there and the judiciary has been compromised,” he said.

Patra questioned if Gandhi was working as an agent on the payroll of an agency to bring down India.

At a lecture at Cambridge University, Gandhi had alleged that Indian democracy is under attack and several politicians, including himself, are under surveillance.

The former Congress president listed five key aspects of the alleged attack on Indian democracy -- capture and control of media and judiciary; surveillance and intimidation; coercion by federal law enforcement agencies; attacks on minorities, Dalits and tribals; and

shutting down of dissent.

Patra said the Congress leader spoke about minorities being treated as second-class citizens and alleged “Rahul Gandhi and the Gandhi family can stoop to any low to destroy the fabric of India.”

“Just because you are not a bright kid and not a bright kid of your dynastic party doesn’t mean India is not a bright spot,” he said, hitting back at the Congress leader.

Patra said Gandhi or other Congress leaders did not even submit their mobile phones for inspection by a probe committee set by the Supreme Court to look into the charge of snooping through the Pegasus malware.

He said an RTI reply had revealed that thousands of phones were tapped and hundreds of emails read by government agencies when the UPA was in power and recalled that former president Pranab Mukherjee, then a Cabinet minister, had suspected that his office was bugged at the behest of another minister.

Oil leak contained in TN coast; fishermen demand removal of pipeline

NAGAPATTINAM (TN),

MAR 4 (PTI): A leak in the pipeline of a refinery that caused oil spill in Nagore Pattinacherry coast in the district here has been contained and steps are on to ensure a lasting solution to the issue, a senior official said on Saturday.

However, the unrelenting fishers from the village, who noticed the oil spill on Friday morning, continued their agitation for the second day today demanding the authorities to remove the underwater crude oil pipeline.

The leak in the pipeline of the Cauvery Basin Refinery of the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) could have probably occurred on Thursday night, apparently due to damage to the old pipeline used to transport crude oil to the Karaikal port once in one-and-a-half months.

Thick oil slick in the sea after a pipeline burst on Nagai coast. “Though the leak in the pipeline was reported on Friday, the officials could not take up the restoration work immediately because of the high tide. Work to arrest the oil spill and clean the coast was taken up after the tide receded,” Nagapattinam District Collector A Arun Thamburaj said.

Following the collector’s orders officials from CPCL, Coast Guard, police and fire and rescue service officials worked round the

clock and arrested the leakage in the early hours today. The drip in the carbon steel pipeline was clamped temporarily and the district administration has directed the refinery to find a lasting solution, a senior official said. Workers from the CPCL used excavators to create a bund on the shoreline while sandbags were piled around the damaged pipeline to facilitate the clamping during the low tide between 1 am to 4.45 am today.

CHENNAI, MAR 4 (AGENCIES): Tamil

Nadu

Chief Minister M K Stalin on Saturday reassured his Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar that all migrant workers are safe in the State and he asserted that swift action would be taken against rumour-mongers spreading panic.

Stalin said he spoke to Nitish Kumar over phone and assured him that no harm would befall workers and conveyed to him that “all workers are our workers who help Tamil Nadu’s growth and nothing will happen to impact them, I have assured him.”

Addressing Kumar as his ‘revered brother,’ the Chief Minister said in an official release here that workers from northern States need not have any kind of apprehensions over working in Tamil Nadu.

In the unlikely event

of somebody intimidating them, they may immediately inform police who would take immediate action.

The Chief Minister’s reassurance comes against the background of false claims in social media platforms that migrant workers, especially ‘Bihari labourers’ in Tamil Nadu were attacked.

Stalin said, “Those spreading rumours that workers from other States are being attacked in Tamil Nadu are against the Indian nation, they infringe the national integrity. Some doing cheap politics over a non-issue is condemnable.” He as-

serted that stern legal action would be taken against those spreading panic through rumours. Some incidents that happened outside of Tamil Nadu were spread by falsely claiming that such incidents took place in TN, he said. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had asked officials on March 2 to look into reports of attacks on migrant workers in Tamil Nadu and his deputy Tejashwi Yadav faced criticism from the opposition BJP for visiting TN.

The Saffron party’s Bihar unit chief Sanjay Jaiswal had claimed that Biharis were ‘killed’ in Tamil Nadu.

Cong wants Karnataka CM to quit after BJP MLA’s son held on bribery charges

BENGALURU, MAR 4 (PTI): The Congress on Saturday demanded the resignation of Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai following the arrest of government officer Prashanth Kumar M V while accepting a bribe of Rs 40 lakh on behalf of his father, a BJP MLA. More than Rs 8 crore unaccounted cash has been seized in subsequent raids at various locations by Lokayukta. The arrested officer’s father is Madal Virupakshappa, the MLA representing Channagiri constituency in Davangere district of the state. The Congress started a poster campaign accusing the ruling BJP in the state of collecting 40 per cent commission on public works.

The party workers took out a mammoth rally to lay siege to the Chief Minister’s residence and raised anti-BJP slogans. Prior to the rally, former chief minister Siddaramaiah tore

into the ruling BJP at a public meeting.

“It is not enough that you arrested Prashanth Kumar. If they have little shame, you should arrest the MLA Madal Virupakshappa immediately.

Basavaraj Bommai should resign taking moral responsibility,” Siddaramaiah said. The Congress stalwart claimed the BJP government has been lying to the people. “Your government is plundering the state. Your ministers, chief minister and the chairman of various boards and corporations have been directed to collect a definite amount. According to me, BJP is set to spend Rs 100 crore in each constituency,” Siddaramaiah charged. Alleging that in the byelections alone, the BJP had spent Rs 40 crore to Rs 50 crore, the former chief minister said the BJP wants to win the election through money power. He appealed to the people to teach the BJP a lesson in the next election.

A welcome ruling

On March 2, the Supreme Court made a landmark ruling regarding the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and elections commissioners (ECs) in India. As per the current process, the Law Minister suggests a pool of suitable candidates to the Prime Minister for consideration. The President makes the appointment on the advice of the PM. A fivejudge bench of the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that a High-Power Committee consisting of the Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, and the Chief Justice of India must pick the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners (ECs). What the apex court ruled is the need for a collegium that has been a long pending demand made by eminent jurists and former ECI officials consisting of the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and Chief Justice of India. According to the verdict of the Supreme Court : “The appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and the Election Commissioners shall be made by the President on the advice of a Committee consisting of the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition of the Lok Sabha, and in case no leader of Opposition is available, the leader of the largest opposition Party in the Lok Sabha in terms of numerical strength, and the Chief Justice of India,” the verdict states. Although the SC ruling has been and should be welcomed by all, Article 324(2) however implies that it is the prerogative of the President of India(acting on the advice of the prime minister and the council of ministers) who decides and appoints the ECI. The government argued that “in the absence of such a law, the President has the constitutional power.” The government has essentially asked the court to exhibit judicial restraint. The crux of the challenge is that since there is no law made by Parliament on this issue, the Court must step in to fill the “constitutional vacuum.” This examination also leads to the larger question of separation of powers and if the judiciary is overstepping its role in filling this gap in the law. What was the challenge before the Court and why did it radically alter the process of appointing Election Commissioner. In 2015, a public interest litigation was filed by Anoop Baranwal challenging the constitutional validity of the practice of the Centre appointing members of the Election Commission. In October 2018, a two-judge bench of the SC referred the case to a larger bench since it would require a close examination of Article 324 of the Constitution, which deals with the mandate of the Chief Election Commissioner. The SC had not debated this issue earlier. In September last year, a five-judge Constitution bench headed by Justice KM Joseph began hearing the case and almost a month later, the verdict was reserved. By severely restricting the hold and control of executive over EC, the new system ensures that the independence, autonomy and institutional integrity of the Commission is intact and well-protected. The Supreme Court verdict should be welcomed as a major step towards reform of the system that has made all the news for the wrong reasons.

Is This True of Me?

None of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself… —Acts 20:24

It is easier to serve or work for God without a vision and without a call, because then you are not bothered by what He requires. Common sense, covered with a layer of Christian emotion, becomes your guide. You may be more prosperous and successful from the world’s perspective, and will have more leisure time, if you never acknowledge the call of God. But once you receive a commission from Jesus Christ, the memory of what God asks of you will always be there to prod you on to do His will. You will no longer be able to work for Him on the basis of common sense.

What do I count in my life as “dear to myself”?

If I have not been seized by Jesus Christ and have not surrendered myself to Him, I will consider the time I decide to give God and my own ideas of service as dear.

I will also consider my own life as “dear to myself.” But Paul said he considered his life dear so that he might fulfill the ministry he had received, and he refused to use his energy on anything else. This verse shows an almost noble annoyance by Paul at being asked to consider himself. He was absolutely indifferent to any consideration other than that of fulfilling the ministry he had received. Our ordinary and reasonable service to God may actually compete against our total surrender to Him. Our reasonable work is based on the following argument which we say to ourselves, “Remember how useful you are here, and think how much value you would be in that particular type of work.” That attitude chooses our own judgment, instead of Jesus Christ, to be our guide as to where we should go and where we could be used the most. Never consider whether or not you are of use— but always consider that “you are not your own” (1 Corinthians 6:19). You are His.

NBCC calls for Fasting, Prayer & Intercession

March 11 (Saturday, 6:00am-6:00pm)

“In my distress I called upon the LORD; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears” (Psalm 18: 6).

The NBCC calls the churches to a day of fasting, prayer and intercession on March 11 ( Saturday) from 6:00am-6:00pm. As we look around us and see the things happening, we can see that it is a distressful time. Brokenness, disunity, falsehood, malice and deceitfulness have become the order of the day. God is far removed from us. His name is only used as a proof text. Our situation must be hurting God.

Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace” (Nehemiah 2:17).

In a situation such as this, the need of the hour is to spend time in confession, repentance and intercede for our people and return to God. We are so much blessed and yet we have taken God’s grace and mercy upon us for granted. We have not only wronged each other with selfish motives and greeds, hurting each other but have put God at the periphery in our lives and dealings. We have become like a genera-

tion in Jesus’ time “These people honors me with their lips but their hearts are far from me” (Matthew 15: 8). As a Christian majority State, we are suppose to be doing much better than what we are. We have failed God in so many ways, in our lives, in our governance and in our relationship with each other. We have taken the name of God in vain, we offer thanks and praise but we do not conduct our lives in manner that honors him. We use the name of God lightly to cover up all the wrongs we do and all the sins we commit. We have become a people unworthy of his Holy Name. We need to return to God and commit our ways to him. There is no other way,

we must draw near to God and live worthy of calling as an individual Christian and a Christian majority state.

1. Begin the prayer day with confession and repentance.

2. Pray for the church leaders that they will rekindle their calling.

3. Pray for our leaders look after the welfare of state led by the Chief Minister and his council of ministers and colleagues.

4. Pray for the bureaucrats and the government servants and the police personals ( law enforcing agencies in the state).

5. Pray for the tribal leaders and other civil society leaders that there will be unity.

Does Eating Food Containing Antibiotics Affect Our Health!?

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”- Mahatma Gandhi

First and foremost let us try to explain ‘What is antibiotics’?

Antibiotic is a drug/substance which either kills or prevents the spread of bacteria whenever there is any kind of bacterial infection in our body. Antibiotic which is being prescribed by doctors for 5-7 days can be effectively used for treatment of bacterial diseases. In the same way, such type of treatment for sick animals and birds are being practiced by veterinarians as well. Here, we will discuss about how antibiotics present in our food such as meat, eggs and milk can affect our body in various ways.

There are different types of antibiotics and their actions also differ in different type of bacteria. The mechanism of action of antibiotics will not be discussed as of now, but let us highlight some of the commonly used antibiotics nowadays are penicillin, tetracyclines, streptomycin, enrofloxacin, chloramphenicol, etc. According to Global Trends Antibiotic Report the 5 BRICS countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa have increased the use of antibiotics by 36% within the past 10 years where India was recorded as one of the highest with 62%. The Global Antibiotic Resistance Partnership (GARP) was established by the co-operation of 5 countries- India, Kenya, South Africa and Vietnam to reduce the risk of side effects of antibiotics in human being.

World Health Organization (WHO) and Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) have put together the Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) of antibiotics that can be present in meat, eggs, and milk and the Acceptable Daily Intake of antibiotics for human. Anything that is displayed in the market should strictly follow the WHO&FAO standard. Many countries have their own standard according to their eating habits and culture; since India is yet to create the standard, we currently follow the WHO&FAO standard. Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) have put forward a step to create the standard (MRL) for India because our health, immunity, food habits etc. is different from the developed countries. All these standards are created to avoid the side effect of antibiotics to a maximum level.

Let us discuss the adverse effects of wrong dosage administration and consumption of antibiotics present in the meat, eggs and milk to the human body. India ranks 3rd in egg production and 8th in meat production in the world, due to which the large scale use of antibiotics through feed and treatment of livestock diseases is inevitable. Antibiotics are widely used in treatment of different types of poultry and livestock diseases like fowl cholera, fowl typhoid, coccidiosis, swine fever, FMD, etc. Besides the above mentioned bacterial diseases, our

animals also die due to an infectious agent called virus. Antibiotics cannot kill virus but it is still given to prevent further secondary infections/ complications. Other than these, antibiotic is also given along with feed and water to promote growth of poultry and livestock, which has created a lot of debate among researchers and scientists. Faster the growth rate, faster is the market age which increases the amount of profit. But when antibiotic fed poultry is consumed either in the form of chicken meat or eggs, it can adversely affect the human health as well. One research has revealed that 80% of poultry birds received at least once antibiotics in its lifetime or before it come to market. Consumption of antibiotic containing chicken and egg can caused skin allergy, kidney problem, liver problem, miscarriage and other several diseases.

It is evident that certain antibiotic like chloramphenicol can cause a severe bone marrow disease known as Grey baby syndrome in babies. The prolonged used of oxytetracycline can cause leucocytosis, thrombocytopenia, liver and heart problems, and can even effect teeth and bones. Children below 7 years of age may develop yellow teeth with long term use of oxytetracycline. Many people are prone to a type of itching/ allergy which may occurs due to the consumption of penicillin antibiotics. After seeing these conditions, doctors also stopped prescribing penicillin for such patient. However, meat containing penicillin can cause the same type of itching which often led to a saying that “I am allergic to this meat.”

Often, we ask ourselves, “If antibiotics are meant to cure diseases, but how does it affect human health?” Antibiotics can kill infectious agent which causes infection to our body. However, when we consume antibiotic containing food, it builds up in our body when we do not need at all and can cause the above mentioned diseases. Let us discuss the world’s most concerned topic of today i.e. Antibiotic/ Antimicrobial Resistance. Antibiotic/ antimicrobial resistance means the resistance developed by infectious agents which mostly occurs due to wrong dosage of administration. The antibiotic that previously cured or treated infections may not work as well anymore, or may not work at all, in order to kill or stop the growth of the bacteria. Infectious agents which cannot be killed by antibiotics have also been discovered.

The so called Superbug or New Delhi metallo β-lactamase 1 (NDM-1) was discovered in India in 2009. This superbug is known to be resistant against almost all types of antibiotics. Similar to this, ESBL (Extended Spectrum β lactamases) bacteria which is resistant against the present known antibiotics, Methicillin Drug Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA), Multi Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) etc. are of today’s concern. Tuberculosis

6. Pray for our chil-

drug which was regarded as effective against Tuberculosis infection in the earlier days are not effective anymore against the newly discovered Tuberculosis bacteria. If these types of bacteria infected our body, antibiotics will definitely be useless against them. Scientists are working on day and night to discover antibiotic which will be effective against these antibiotic resistant bacteria. One of the many reasons against antibiotic resistance is the build up of antibiotics level in our body through consumption of meat, eggs, milk, etc. containing antibiotics. We must also keep in mind that antibiotic resistance can occur when we do not take a proper full course of antibiotics as prescribed by a Doctor.

Lets us try to answer the most frequently encountered question “Is antibiotic containing meat, eggs and milk safe for human consumption after boiling?” The observation of veterinary research scholars in this field revealed that antibiotic present in chicken, eggs, milk etc., can be destroyed upto 20 to 50% by cooking and boiling which varied according to the type of antibiotics. However, 100% antibiotics present in food cannot be destroyed by cooking and boiling method.

We should keep in mind that different antibiotics have different withdrawal period for meat, eggs and milk. For example, the withdrawal period of tetracycline in cow’s milk is 48-72 hours, which means that the cow’s milk contains tetracycline for 48-72 hours after administration of such antibiotic and should not be consumed within this period. Same goes with other antibiotics as well. Animals should not be slaughtered within the withdrawal period of antibiotics for the safety of meat and eggs consumption. Some diseases which we mentioned earlier like CSF, FMD etc., are commonly encountered and required vigorous use of antibiotics for their treatment, so we must be more cautious about it.

We have mentioned the different health problems which may occur due to improper dosage of antibiotics and consumption of food containing antibiotics. Self medication and treatment of sick animals without the guidance of veterinarians/ doctors should be avoided. Till date, majority of the population are not aware about the probable harmful effects of antibiotics to our health. Awareness about judicious use of antibiotics is of absolute necessity from the grass root level in a society. All the important information or awareness cannot be mentioned right now. Therefore, we should not hesitate to enquire to Veterinary Officers/Doctors regarding the safety of meat, eggs and milk consumption.

dren and young people and the challenges they face in life.

7. Pray for our children writing their exam and those in schools, colleges and universities pursuing further studies.

8. Pray for parents, single mothers, widows and widowers) and the orphans.

9. Pray for the farmers and for favorable weather as we approach the sowing season.

Churches are advised to come up with more elaborate prayer points and organize prayer time in manner that would best fit the situation based on the local context. Let take this take this day to approach God’s throne of grace seeking his face in repentance and the healing of our land.

“My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7: 14).

India’s G-20 Presidency and Opportunities for Bangladesh

The G-20 is the premier global forum for dialogue and cooperation on global economic and financial issues. It is over two decades old and holds the attention of experts and students alike for its intricate interaction between the geoeconomics and geopolitics of the contemporary world. India holds the presidency of this year’s G-20 summit. India’s presidency of the G-20 comes at a critical time, both for India and the G-20 countries.

Under the presidency, India has invited nine guest countries. Those countries are: Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Spain, and the UAE. Bangladesh is the only neighboring country of the South Asia that has been invited by India. This invitation bears great significance for both India and Bangladesh.

India not only invited nine guest countries to this forum, but also, the International Solar Alliance (ISA), the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) are invited as Guest-International Organizations (IOs). India is expected to host over 215 events at 55 different locations across the country. At most of these meetings, the G20 world will be represented by 42 delegations of ministers and officials. The summit in September 2023 will bring nearly 12,000 international delegates, media, security, and associated personnel to Delhi. While the G-20 cannot be a panacea for all the world’s problems, it has played a vital role in international cooperation in the past decade. In an era when rising powers seek opportunities to influence and contribute to global affairs, effective global governance through forums such as the G-20 is essential. As a guest country, Bangladesh will get a global platform for the portrayal of the issues that have arisen amidst the Russian-Ukraine war. As much as the global issues, some internal issues in Bangladesh needed a global platform like G-20.

Bangladesh in G-20

Bangladesh is also a rapidly developing country and has made significant progress in recent years in areas such as poverty reduction and economic growth. Bangladesh has become a center of interest for developed countries due to its important geostrategic location. The future world will be an Asian-led world. The future of the world economy is inextricably linked to the development of Asia, which is home to some of the world’s largest and fastest-growing economies. India and Bangladesh, as two of the leading economies in the region, will play a critical role in shaping the future of Asia and the world. With a rapidly growing economy and a large young population, Bangladesh is well-positioned to become a key player in Asia’s economic future.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is the only South Asian leader invited by India to the summit of the world’s most powerful economies. Higher official’s visit from both of the countries has already started regarding the preparations for the summit.

The Foreign Minister of Bangladesh AK Abdul Momen will visit Delhi to attend the G-20 foreign minister’s meeting in mid-March. Vinay Kwatra’s visit on February 14-15 was part of preparations for the meeting. Bangladesh has already started to leave its footprint in the arena of cooperation under the G-20. The Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh

Hasina placed six proposals before the G-20 platform to be addressed collectively for sustained global growth and development of the ‘Global South’. Referring to the Russia- Ukraine war and the Covid-19 pandemic, she said it is high time to work collectively for a just and fair economic order.

In her proposals, she gave a call to maintain global peace and stability to achieve sustained global growth. She also called upon the world to develop a new paradigm to address inequality holistically in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

She underscored the special financing support for the most vulnerable countries, including LDCs and climate-vulnerable countries during the transition period. She has urged to bridge the digital divide to ensure equal opportunities for all.

She emphasized strengthening South-South and triangular cooperation to ensure global human development. For cooperation, support from partners, international financial institutions, private sectors, think tanks, and other stakeholders are crucial.

Opportunities for Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s participation in G-20 will usher in a new era of opportunity for Bangladesh. As this year’s G-20 summit focuses on a sustainable future, Bangladesh can use this platform to attract more sustainable investments from the developed countries of G-20. Bangladesh is among the nine special invitees which attended the first G-20 Energy Transition Working Group (ETWG) meeting to be held under India’s presidency in Bengaluru from February 5-7, 2023. Bangladesh can also attract investment from developed countries to finance in Bangladesh for affordable energy transitions. As well as Bangladesh can attract more investments in the renewable energy sector of Bangladesh from developed countries.

Moreover, Bangladesh is on the way to signing a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with India, which will immensely benefit the economy of Bangladesh. This global platform might bring an opportunity for Bangladesh to initiate CEPA with other developed countries.

Not only that, Bangladesh will get a strong platform to portray the Rohingya situation of Bangladesh. Again, while the G-20 cannot be a panacea for all the world’s problems, it has played a vital role in international cooperation in the past decade. So, Bangladesh can expect international cooperation in the Rohingya repatriation process. Dialogue and diplomacy can help to resolve unsolved issues. For this, India too should promote an inclusive approach to international issues with pragmatic and humancentric solutions at the G20 forum.

In conclusion, the future of the global economy is increasingly in Asia’s hands, with countries like India and Bangladesh leading the way. The rise of these economies represents a significant shift in the balance of global economic power, and their leadership in forums like the G-20 will be crucial in shaping the future of the world economy. The invitation from India is a great honor for Bangladesh. If Bangladesh can exploit the opportunities properly, the country will be immensely benefitted from its closest neighbor’s presidency.

Court extends Sisodia’s CBI custody; AAP alleges ‘mental harassment’

NEW DELHI, MAR 4 (PTI): A Delhi court on Saturday extended by two days the CBI custody of former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, arrested in a corruption case related to the now-scrapped excise policy, and directed the central probe agency to produce him on Monday.

Special judge M K Nagpal also directed the CBI not to ask him the same questions repeatedly after Sisodia termed it as “mental harassment”. “They are not using third-degree. But sitting for eight to nine hours and answering the same questions again and again, that too is mental harassment,” Sisodia said.

To which the judge, who had on the last hearing directed the CBI not to use the third degree on the accused, told the probe agency not ask the “same questions again and again. If you have something new, ask him.”

Sisodia’s counsel also told the court that his wife’s health was very poor and that she was basically in a “vegetative state”.

investigation. Their failure to complete investigation can’t be a ground for remand,” senior advocate Dayan Krishnan, appearing for Sisodia, said. The court, meanwhile, issued notice to the CBI on Sisodia’s bail plea and directed it to file a reply by March 10, when it will hear the arguments on the application. In his application, Sisodia stated that he joined the investigation as and when called for by the Central probe agency. He further stated that no fruitful purpose would be served by keeping him in custody as all the recoveries have already been made, adding that the other accused persons arrested in this case have already been granted bail. Asserting that he had held an important constitutional post of Deputy CM of Delhi, Sisodia said he has deep roots in the society.

NEW DELHI, MAR 4

(PTI): The BJP on Saturday alleged that Delhi mayor Shelly Oberoi sits like a “dummy” in municipal meetings and, instead of exercising her own wisdom for civic governance, is being “remote-controlled” by senior AAP leaders for decision-making.

Senior BJP leader and former South Delhi mayor Kamaljeet Sehrawat made the accusations during a press conference at the saffron party’s Delhi unit headquarters. There was no immediate reaction from Oberoi or the AAP. Oberoi either “remains mute” or reacts with a sense of delay, as if she has received “some instructions” from AAP leaders like Atishi, who is mostly “remotely feeding information” to her over mobile, Sehrawat alleged. In meetings, it is expected that a mayor will exercise his or her own wisdom and work with all

the councillors and other leaders for the city’s collective good, she said.

“But, in the meetings with department heads and others that she attends, AAP leaders Atishi and Saurabh Bhardwaj accompany her. And she sits there like a ‘gungi gudiya (dummy)’ and doesn’t engage in discussions while these two AAP leaders make decisions,” the BJP leader claimed.

Sehrawat said the AAP dispensation should “allow” the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to run as per its autonomy and not try to “remote-control” civic governance.

She also alleged that the Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi is trying to “hand over 1,400 kilometres of Public Works department roads to a private concessionaire” through a Cabinet note and that the AAP dispensation is also trying to “wreck” the national capital’s sanitation system.

“And, if Mayor Shelly Oberoi sides with the AAP government on these issues and allows herself to be remote-controlled by it, then the BJP, as a strong opposition, will protest vehemently,” Sehrawat said.

Repairing broken pavements, central verges and manholes, resurfacing roads and sprinkling water on them daily -- these are some initiatives that will be undertaken as part of the Delhi government’s mega project to transform the city roads that will kick off from April 1.

The chief minister, in late January, had said that they would transform 1,400 kilometres of roads that come under the jurisdiction of Delhi’s Public Works department.

During Saturday’s press conference, former East Delhi mayor Harsh Malhotra also levelled allegations against the AAP dispensation of trying to “ruin the autonomy” of the MCD.

HOSHIARPUR, MAR 3 (PTI): A woman’s eightyear-old son and 21-yearold niece were crushed to death by a tractor-trailer after they fell off a scooter during a snatching incident near here on Friday, police said.

The incident took place near Miani, about 40 km from here, while the three were returning to their village, police said.

Tanda Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kulwant Singh said the 40-year-old woman sustained injuries and was admitted to the Community Health Centre, Tanda.

BJP leader and former chief minister Vasundhara Raje attacked the Congress government in Rajasthan on Saturday, alleging that corruption has become rampant under its rule and the power tussle between CM Ashok Gehlot and his former deputy Sachin Pilot has pushed the state backwards.

Addressing a public gathering after offering prayers at Salasar Balaji temple in Churu district with her son and MP Dushyant Singh, she alleged that Gehlot and Pilot have left no stone unturned in targeting each other. In their tussle, they pushed Rajasthan backwards, she added. Gehlot and Pilot have been at loggerheads publicly for more than two years. In 2020, Pilot had led a rebellion in the party for a change of leadership in the state. However, Gehlot managed to survive

Vasundhara Raje

and Pilot and some of his loyalists were later ousted from the state cabinet. Their conflict has simmered since, with both the senior Congress leaders using sharp words against each other publicly, including when Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra had entered the state in December last year. Raje’s public meeting was organised to mark her birthday, which falls on March 8. As Holi, also known as Dhulandi in parts of Rajasthan, will be celebrated that day, Raje decided to hold a show of strength on Saturday.

(AGENCIES): West Bengal Congress spokesperson Kaustav Bagchi was granted bail by a court in Kolkata on Saturday evening, hours after being arrested for his alleged comments against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. A huge team of the Burtolla police station in Kolkata raided Mr Bagchi’s residence in Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas district around 3.30 am, and arrested him after a few hours, reports NDTV news. Mr Bagchi, also a lawyer, was granted bail on a personal bail bond of Rs 1,000 by the additional chief metropolitan magistrate at Bankshall court. The court directed him to meet the investigating officer once a week. The prosecution prayed for Bagchi’s police

custody till March 10 for questioning him, alleging he was involved in a conspiracy.

Praying for bail, Bagchi’s lawyers questioned why a lawyer was arrested by the police early in the morning from his residence, instead of serving him a notice. The arrest was not necessary since the charges against him in the FIR do not entail a sentence of over seven years, his lawyers told the court.

Bagchi was arrested on

the basis of a complaint filed at the Burtolla police station on Friday night by one Sumit Singh, who claimed to be a TMC supporter, for his alleged comments against the chief minister. Bagchi allegedly criticised Banerjee for making “personal attacks” on state Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury after the party snatched the Sagardighi seat in Murshidabad district from the TMC in a bypoll.

Minister Anurag Thakur on Saturday attacked the AAP dispensation in Punjab, saying law and order “collapsed” in the state after the formation of “one government”, and suggested it “wakes up” and takes some steps. His remarks come in the backdrop of the last month Ajnala incident in which self-styled Sikh preacher and Khalistani sympathiser Amritpal Singh and his supporters, carrying swords and guns, clashed with police for the release of one of his aide.

In Delhi, they say the police should be handed

over to them, “what have they done to the police (here in Punjab)”, the BJP leader and information and broadcasting minister said without naming the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) or its government in the state and in the national capital.

Law and order situation has “collapsed” in the state in the last one year, Thakur, who was here to launch the ‘Yuva Utsava-India@2047’, told reporters. “What has happened to Punjab’s situation in the last one year? The incidents which took place here, what do they indicate,” Thakur asked.

Infra development needs to move in top gear: PM Modi

NEW DELHI, MAR 4

(PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that India’s infrastructure development which is the driving force of the economy needs to move in “top gear” to help the country become a developed nation by 2047.

Addressing a post-budget webinar, Modi said that by focussing on infrastructure development, which is the driving force of the economy, India will achieve the target of becoming a developed nation by 2047.

“Infrastructure development is the driving force of the country’s economy...

Now we have to improve our speed and move in top gear,” he said while recalling the initiatives taken by his government to improve the health of the country’s infrastructure.

The subject of the webinar was ‘Infrastructure

and Investment: Improving logistic efficiency with PM Gatishakti National Master Plan’. Modi is holding a series of webinar to delve upon various aspects of the Union Budget 2023-24 presented by finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Lok Sabha on February 1. He said that the latest Budget will give new energy to infrastructure. He said India’s capital expenditure or capex has increased five times compared to 2013-14 and the government is moving with a target of investing

“This is a time of new responsibilities, new possibilities and bold decisions for every stakeholder,” he emphasised.

The prime minister told the gathering that his government is working to create modern infrastructure in all areas such as roads, railways, ports and airports. It would help in enhancing competitiveness of businesses and reduce logistics cost.

“Infrastructure has always been important in the development of any country.

Those who study the history related to infrastructure know this very well,” Modi said as he cited several examples from India.

Modi further said that for decades a thinking dominated in India that poverty is a virtue and as a result earlier governments faced

4 BJP districts root for Er. Kropol for induction as cabinet minister

Correspondent

KOHIMA, MAR 4 (NPN):

BJP workers from four districts (Kohima, Phek, Tseminyu and Peren) have appealed to Central and State leadership of the party to ensure a cabinet berth for Er Kropol Vitsu, BJP representative from 15 Southern Angami-II assembly constituency.

Addressing media persons at the party headquarters here Saturday, presidents of four mandals urged the party leadership to consider giving “a good berth” to Kropol so that years of party candidate drought from four regions be compensated through his leadership. While thanking the party high command at the Centre and the state for heeding to the request for a party ticket from Tenyimi area, BJP Kohima mandal

president, Khrielie Üsou said the party workers had diligently worked and secured a seat now. Üsou said it was important to allot a cabinet seat to Kropol in the new government so party workers from the four units work “more effectively and efficiently”.

Pointing out that there were 14 constituencies under four mandals, Üsou said Kropol should be given an opportunity to enable him to look after the needs of the karyakartas under all four mandals.

Üsou said unlike other parts of the state, the four units only got one ticket. However, he said that now since Kropol was elected there was the need to have an equal voice among the party workers.

Meanwhile, Üsou expressed concern over government employees and bu-

reaucrats openly campaigning against BJP candidate Kropol during the elections.

He said that “open and illegal indulgence” in electioneering by some senior bureaucrats and government servants under 15 Southern Angami-II AC would be taken up seriously with necessary actions. State executive and representative of Tseminyu district, Thomas Magh, said that although the region had been deprived of an elected representative, the situations have changed now. He said it was important that the party functionaries give an opportunity to the lone representative in the form of a good portfolio. Other mandal leaders who attended during press conference included BJP Phek unit vice president, S Pusai Rhakho and Peren unit president, Huzantabdo Meriem.

difficulty in investing in the country’s infrastructure.

“Our government has not only pulled the country out of this thinking, but it is also making record investments on modern infrastructure,” he said.

As a result, he said, average annual construction of national highways has nearly doubled since 2014, and electrification of railway lines has increased to 4,000 route kilometers from 600 route kilometers. He also highlighted that the number of airports has increased to around 150 from 74 in 2014.

Modi said PM Gati Shakti Master Plan is a critical tool that integrates economic and infrastructural planning with development and added “Gati Shakti National Master Plan is going to change the face of India’s infrastructure and its multimodal logistics”.

The interest rates in India will continue to be at a higher level next fiscal as inflation continues to be sticky at a higher level, said experts and several reports.

“The interest rates will remain at higher levels as it looks unlikely that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will cut rates. There is a possibility of another rate hike based on how inflation turns out in the coming month,” Madan Sabnavis, Chief Economist, Bank of Baroda told IANS.

Sabnavis also said with the US Federal Reserve going for two hikes, the world

will be through a phase of higher rates.

Credit rating agency Acuite Ratings and Research said the RBI will continue with monetary tightening and will hike the policy rate by 25 basis points (bps).

Acuite Ratings expects the RBI to persist with monetary tightening to guard against generalisation of core inflation pressures into a wage-price spiral.

“After a hike of 25 bps in Apr-23, MPC (Monetary Policy Committee) could opt for a pause for impact assessment. The stance may change to ‘neutral’ only af-

ter core inflation witnesses a sustained decline to below 5 per cent,” Acuite Ratings said.

According to Acuite Ratings, over the last three months, inflation has begun to descend from peak levels across most economies in the world. The upshot from this development has been a step down in monetary policy aggression by most central banks despite the persistence of monetary tightening.

Morgan Stanley in a report said that the RBI may hike the repo rate in April and peg the terminal rate at 6.75 per cent.

Govt not in ‘crazy rush’ to sell everything: FM Sitharaman

NEW DELHI, MAR 4 (PTI): The government is not in a “crazy rush” to sell everything and it will continue to have a presence in four strategic sectors, including telecom, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Saturday.

In strategic sectors, a bare minimum presence of the existing public sector commercial enterprises at the holding company level will be retained under government control. The remaining enterprises in a strategic sector will be considered for privatisation or merger with another PSE or for closure.

Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue, the minister said that the country will have government-owned professionally run companies in four broad strategic sectors.

According to the PSE Policy, the four broad strategic sectors are - atomic energy, space and defence; transport and telecommunication; Power, Petroleum, Coal and other minerals; and Banking, Insurance and Financial Services.

The policy, she added, “is not a crazy rushing out to sell everything..nor it is saying that the government will run the business of producing pins to crops to everything. So where the government doesn’t have to be, it won’t. But where because of strategic interests you have to be, it will be there like telecom for instance.

“There will be a telecom company which will be government owned and it will be run professionally.”

DELHI,

MAR 4 (PTI): The government slashed windfall profit tax on export of diesel to its lowest of Rs 0.50 per litre and nil on jet fuel (ATF) while the levy on domestically produced crude oil was marginally increased, according to an official order. The levy on crude oil produced by companies such as Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has hiked to Rs 4,400 per tonne from Rs 4,350 per tonne, the order dated March 3 said. Crude oil pumped out of the ground and from below the seabed is refined and converted into fuels like petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF).

The government has also cut the tax on export of diesel to Rs 0.5 per litre from Rs 2.5, and the same on overseas shipments of ATF was cut to nil from Rs 1.50 a litre. The new tax rates come into effect from March 4, the order said.

Goods and services exports may cross $750 bn-mark this fiscal: Piyush Goyal

NEW DELHI, MAR 4 (PTI): India’s goods and services exports are expected to cross USD 750 billion this fiscal despite the global economic uncertainties, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Saturday.

In 2021-22, the country’s goods and services exports touched an all-time high of USD 422 billion and USD 254 billion respectively, taking the total shipments to USD 676 billion.

Last year we crossed a record USD 650 billion of goods and services (exports). This year, we are aiming for an even bigger recordWe have crossed last

year’s figure alreadyWe will hopefully cross USD 750 billion (this year), he said while speaking at the Raisina Dialogue here.

Due to the global demand slowdown, India’s exports contracted for the second consecutive month in January, dipping by 6.6 per cent to USD 32.91 billion. During April-January this fiscal, goods shipments rose by 8.5 per cent to USD 369.25 billion, while services exports were estimated at USD 272 billion in the period.

The minister said that sectors which would help in promoting exports include manufactured goods, agri products, labour intensive items, and high quality products. He expressed confidence that by 2030, India’s goods and services exports would touch USD 2 trillion. Replying to a question about widening trade deficit with China, he said the government is taking steps to boost domestic manufacturing of quality goods which would help in containing imports.

5 killed in oxygen plant fire in Bangladesh

DHAKA, MAR 4 (PTI):

At least five people were killed and over 30 others injured on Saturday after a major fire broke out at an oxygen plant in Bangladesh’s Chattogram district, officials said. A loud noise was heard after which the fire broke out at Seema Oxygen Plant around 4.30 pm in Keshabpur area of Chattogram’s Sitakunda upazila, local people said.

China hints at hiking defence budget

BEIJING, MAR 4 (PTI):

China on Saturday signalled at increasing its defence budget, the second biggest after the US, citing “complex security challenges” ahead of its annual Parliament session during which it will unveil a new ministerial and official leadership, including a successor to Premier Li Keqiang. The annual season of China’s rubber-stamp Parliament began on Saturday with the opening meeting of the top advisory body the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) while its national legislature, the National People’s Congress (NPC), will begin its session on Sunday.

Lesion removed from Biden’s chest, cancerous WASHINGTON, MAR 4 (AP): A skin lesion removed from US President Joe Biden’s chest last month was a basal cell carcinoma -- a common form of skin cancer -- his doctor said on Friday, adding that no further treatment was required.

Dr Kevin O’Connor, the White House doctor who has served as Biden’s longtime physician, said “all cancerous tissue was successfully removed” during the president’s routine physical on February 16. Biden, 80, was deemed by O’Connor to be “healthy, vigorous” and “fit” to handle his White House responsibilities during that physical exam, which comes as he is weeks away from launching an expected bid for reelection in 2024.

US, Germany in ‘lockstep’ on Ukraine war

WASHINGTON, MAR 4

(AP): US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met privately in the Oval Office for more than an hour on Friday after declaring themselves in “lockstep” on maintaining pressure on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

Even their top advisers were left out of the conversation. When the meeting ended, Biden and Scholz walked across the hall to the Roosevelt Room, where the American and German officials had been mingling.

Biden joked that the two leaders had solved all the world’s problems by themselves, according to a senior administration official, who requested anonymity to describe the closed-door discussions.

If any agreements were reached or plans made, the White House was not saying. The official readout of the meeting provided little additional detail, except to say the two leaders discussed the war and “exchanged perspectives on other global issues”.

Sputnik vaccine scientist strangled to death in Russia

MOSCOW, MAR 4 (PTI): Andrey Botikov, one of the scientists who helped to create the Russian COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V, was strangled to death with a belt at his apartment here and police have arrested a suspect in connection with the murder, according to a Russian media report on Saturday.

Botikov, 47, who worked as a senior researcher at the Gamaleya National Research Center for Ecology and Mathematics, was found dead in his apartment on Thursday, Russian News Agency TASS quoted the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation as saying. Russian President Vladimir Putin honoured the virologist with the Order of Merit for the Fatherland award for his work on the COVID vaccine in 2021. Botikov was one of 18 scientists who developed the Sputnik V vaccine in 2020, according to reports.

The conversation came at a delicate moment in the conflict. Ukraine and Russia are preparing for spring offensives, meaning a steady flow of Western weapons will be important for Kyiv’s success on the battlefield.

However, there are fresh concerns that public support for ongoing military assistance may be waning. In addition, US officials have warned that China could step off the sidelines and begin providing ammunition to Moscow, a decision that would change the trajectory of the war by allowing Russia to replenish its depleted stockpiles.

China is Germany’s top trading partner, and European nations have generally been more cautious than the United States in taking a hard line with Beijing. However, there are signs that may be shifting as global rivalries grow more tense.

In a speech to the German parliament on Thursday, Scholz called on China to “use your influence in Moscow to press for the withdrawal of Russian troops, and do not supply weapons to the aggressor Russia”.

During brief public remarks on Friday, Scholz said Western allies would

support Ukraine for “as long as it takes”.

“This is a very, very important year because of the dangerous threat to peace that comes from Russia invading Ukraine,” he said.

Biden thanked Germany for providing “critical military support”.

“And I would argue, beyond the military support, the moral support you have given Ukrainians has been profound,” he said.

Biden said, “Together, we worked lockstep to supply critical security assistance to Ukraine,” and Scholz also described the US-German effort as “lockstep”.

The White House announced USD 400 million more in US assistance as their meeting began. The US and Germany have worked closely together to supply Ukraine with military and humanitarian assistance. But there has also been friction over issues such as providing tanks and Washington has occasionally grown frustrated with Berlin’s hesitance.

Scholz last visited the White House a little more than a year ago, shortly before Russia invaded Ukraine.

Unlike formal state visits, such as when French President Emmanuel Macron came to Washington last year, there was no pomp and ceremony. Scholz’s trip lacked the customary press conference where the two leaders take questions from reporters representing both countries.

John Kirby, a White House national security spokesman, described it as a “true working visit between these two leaders”.

In an interview with German broadcaster Welt, opposition leader Friedrich Merz accused Scholz of being secretive about his trip to Washington, which was taking place without the customary press pack in tow.

Merz suggested that Scholz had to smooth ruffled feathers over the deal to provide tanks to Ukraine.

Scholz dismissed any notion of discord between allies before he left on his trip.

Indonesia fuel depot fire kills 18, over dozen missing

JAKARTA, MAR 4 (AP): Indonesian rescuers and firefighters on Saturday searched for more than a dozen missing under the rubble of charred houses and buildings, after a large fire spread from a fuel storage depot in the capital and killed at least 18 people.

The Plumpang fuel storage station, operated by state-run oil and gas company Pertamina, is near a densely populated area in the Tanah Merah neighborhood in North Jakarta. It supplies 25% of Indonesia’s fuel needs. At least 260 firefighters and 52 fire engines extinguished the blaze just before midnight on Friday after it tore through the neighborhood for more than two hours, fire officials said.

Footage showed hundreds of people running in panic as thick plumes of black smoke and orange flames filled the sky.

A preliminary investigation showed the fire broke out when a pipeline ruptured during heavy rain, possibly triggered by a lightning

UN nuclear head meets with Iranians amid enrichment concerns

DUBAI, MAR 4(AP): The head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog was meeting with officials in Iran on Saturday, days after it was revealed that the country had enriched particles of uranium to near weapons-grade, raising new alarm over its longdisputed nuclear program.

Rafael Mariano Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, declined to comment on his discussions during a press conference with the head of Iran’s nuclear program, saying the delegation’s work was still ongoing.

“It’s an atmosphere of work, of honesty and cooperation,” Grossi said. He later met with Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi and was expected to speak with reporters upon his return to Vienna.

Earlier this week, the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency reported that uranium particles enriched up to 83.7% — just short of weaponsgrade — were found in Iran’s underground Fordo nuclear site.

The confidential quarterly report by the IAEA, which was distributed to member states on Tuesday, came as tensions were already high amid months of anti-government protests in Iran and Western anger at its export of attack drones to Russian forces fighting in Ukraine.

The IAEA report says that inspectors in January found that two cascades of IR-6 centrifuges at Iran’s Fordo facility had been configured in a way “substantially different” to what had been previously declared.

The IAEA took samples the following day, which showed particles with up to 83.7% purity, the report said.

The IAEA report only spoke about “particles,” suggesting that Iran isn’t building a stockpile of uranium enriched above 60% — the level it has been enriching at for some time. However, the agency also said in its report that it would “further increase the frequency and intensity of agency verification activities” at Fordo after the discovery.

Iran has sought to portray any detection of highly enriched uranium particles as a momentary side effect of trying to reach a fin -

ished product of 60% purity. However, experts say such a great variance in the purity even at the atomic level would appear suspicious to inspectors.

The chief of Iran’s nuclear program, Mohammad Eslami, acknowledged the findings of the IAEA report at the press conference with Grossi but said it did not amount to 84% enrichment. He said the “ambiguity” of the findings had been resolved.

Nonproliferation experts say Tehran has no civilian use for uranium enriched to even 60%. A stockpile of material enriched to 90%, the level needed for weapons, could be quickly used to produce an atomic bomb if Iran chooses.

Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers limited Tehran’s uranium stockpile and capped enrichment at 3.67% — enough to fuel a nuclear power plant.

strike, said Eko Kristiawan, Pertamina’s area manager for the western part of Java. Residents living near

the depot said they smelled a strong odor of gasoline, causing some people to vomit, after which thunder

rumbled twice, followed by a huge explosion around 8 p.m. Sri Haryati, a mother of three, said the fire began to spread about 20 minutes later, causing panic. Rescuers were searching for 16 people who were reported missing or separated from their families amid the chaos. About 42 people were receiving treatment in five hospitals, some of them in critical condition.

National Police chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo said more than 1,300 people were displaced and taking shelter in 10 government offices, a Red Cross command post and a sport stadium.

The incident took place at the Shree Laxmi Narayan Temple in Brisbane.

EPL: Manchester City beat Newcastle 2-0 Dortmund

The win means City move to within two points of the Gunners, who play Bournemouth later on Saturday, while Newcastle remain fifth, four points behind Tottenham. While the result will be disappointing for Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, as his side looked to bounce back from last

weekend’s Carabao Cup final defeat, there were plenty of positives for him in defeat. His side were on top when Erling Haaland set up Silva to make it 2-0 from the edge of the area, with Joelinton going close and substitute Alexander Isak denied by an onrushing Ederson.

Kai Havertz was one-on-one with Leeds keeper Illan Meslier, while Joao Felix smashed a shot from distance against the crossbar before Ben Chilwell prodded wide from an excellent position.

After that there was a growing sense of deja vu around Stamford Bridge as Chelsea faded while Leeds grew into the game, with Jack Harrison sending a freekick over the bar before the break. But Fofana ended Chelsea’s run of 396 minutes without a goal when he rose to head home from a corner early in the second half.

The 21-year-old, who impressed for Ecuador in the World Cup, has agreed on a new deal until 2027, with the club having the option to extend his stay for another year, reports Xinhua news agency.

The news comes after he had asked to leave with Arsenal believed to have offered around 70 million pounds to sign him, prompting Brighton to leave him out of their squad for several games.

Leipzig caught the better start on the road and came close with five minutes played when Dominik Szoboszlai unleashed a hammer from long range before Christopher Nkunku pulled wide from a promising position two minutes later, reports Xinhua news agency. The hosts thought they had opened the scoring out of the blue, but Julian Brandt’s goal was ruled offside by the video assistant referee in the 15th minute. RIYADH (SAUDI ARABIA), MAR 4 (IANS): With a clinical performance, former champions Services claimed third place in the 76th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy after beating Punjab 2-0 in the playoff match at the King Fahd International Stadium, here on Saturday. Services played a high-press game, took an early lead and kept Punjab under pressure throughout the 90-minute encounter. which was glanced on by Carl McHugh and palmed behind for a corner by Amrinder Singh at full stretch. As both sides pressed further up the field, the deadlock was broken less than ten minutes before the break. Petratos’ effort from range was palmed over the

BUENOS AIRES, MAR

4 (IANS): Seventh seed Tommy Paul advanced to the final of the ATP 500 Mexican Open with a 6-3, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (2) win over fel-

low American Taylor Fritz. Paul hit seven aces but also committed five double faults as he prevailed in three hours and 25 minutes at the Fairmont Acapulco

This year’s edition of the Mexican Open played on outdoor hard courts will offer total prize money of more than two million euros.

Saturday will mark only the second time that Paul has featured in an ATP final as he bids to repeat his triumph at the 2021 ATP 250 event in Stockholm last November.

bar for a corner that was taken quickly by the striker.

Manvir Singh arrived at the near post just in time to flick it across an open goal before Boumous drove it in at the far post.

In the second half, Odisha FC hovered around the ATKMB’s box in the

opening couple of minutes. Jerry Mawihmingthanga came close to pouncing on Diego Mauricio’s header across the face of goal, but couldn’t test ATKMB. Instead, the Mariners broke on the counter, with Colaco forcing a finger-tip save out of Amrinder.

Approaching the hour-mark, McHugh recovered the ball in midfield and exchanged a pass with Boumous before rolling it through to Petratos near the edge of the box. The striker moved his season’s tally into double digits as he slotted his side’s second goal past Amrinder. Just after the hour-mark, there was a collision between Kaith and Mauricio, which eventually led to the former being unable to continue as Arsh Shaikh came on to guard the goal. Seeing a new keeper in the ATKMB goal, Pedro Martin was put in to increase his side’s potency in the final ten minutes of the game.

dispirited and could not produce their usual game. They are a depleted side anyway after being forced to leave four first-choice players back home because of visa issues. They were further demoralised after losing their semifinal to

Meghalaya on Wednesday.

Punjab had topped their preliminary group and also the Final Round pool as they made a hash of the confidence gained in the first two rounds. But the change of personnel and coach for the knockout matches in Riyadh resulted in them failing to live up to expectations in both the matches they played in Riyadh.

Services, on the other hand, joined the tournament in the Final Round in Bhubaneswar and topped their pool ahead of Meghalaya. They had only one poor match, as they conceded midfield advantage and failed to pressure Karnataka’s defence in the second semifinal.

On Saturday, they did not make the same mistake and kept the Punjab defence under pressure from the start of the match.

“We knew that Punjab’s defence is a little bit suspect and therefore we applied high press from the start. Though we could not achieve our original goal, we are happy to end the match on a winning note,” said Services coach M.G Ramachandran after the match.

Brazil name nine uncapped for Morocco friendly RIO DE JANEIRO, MAR

4

(IANS): Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos is among nine uncapped players named on Brazil’s squad for a friendly against Morocco later this month, the Brazilian Football Confederation said.

Interim manager Ramon Menezes also included newcomers Andre (Fluminense), Arthur Augusto (America Mineiro), Joao Gomes (Wolverhampton), Vitor Roque (Paranaense), Mycael (Paranaense), Robert Renan (Zenit Saint Petersburg), Raphael Veiga (Palmeiras) and Rony (Palmeiras) in his 23-man squad, reports Xinhua news agency.

“We are going to face a very well-prepared team so it’s going to be a big test,” Menezes told a news conference. The March 25 friendly in Tanger will be the first outing for both sides since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Brazil were eliminated on penalties by Croatia in the quarterfinals while Morocco became the first African team to reach the semifinals of football’s showpiece event, falling to France 2-0.

Dubai Open: Medvedev beats Rublev to clinch third title in three weeks

DUBAI, MAR 4 (AGENCIES): Former World No.1 Daniil Medvedev beat defending champion Andrey Rublev in an all-Russian final at ATP500 event in Dubai to clinch his third title in three weeks, reports Sportstar.

Third-seeded Medvedev, who came to Dubai after winning the tournaments in Rotterdam and Doha, defeated secondseeded Rublev 6-2, 6-2 in an hour and eight minutes to claim his 14th straight match win. Medvedev is the third player to win three titles in as many weeks since 2021 after Casper Ruud (July 2021) and Felix Auger-Aliassime (October 2022).

The 2021 US Open champion Medvedev, who ended World No.1 Novak Djokovic’s unbeaten start to the season in the semifinals, broke Rublev in the opening

game of the match before doubling his advantage in the seventh game to win the opening set. The second set was no different as he got the break of serves in the fifth and seventh games to wrap up the match and extend the head-to-head advantage to 5-2.

Overall, Medvedev hit 27 winners and made only six unforced errors as com-

pared to Rublev’s 22 winners and 10 unforced errors.

“It was very tactical [match],” Medvedev said in his on-court interview. “I know Andrey can cause a lot of trouble to everyone on Tour. Every time we play he tries to make me suffer, I try to make him suffer. Today I managed to be on top, but the next match could be a different story.”

Jaiswal scores second ton of match as ROI inch closer to victory

GWALIOR, MAR 4 (PTI): Yashasvi Jaiswal mauled a hapless Madhya Pradesh attack into submission with another near flawless hundred as Rest of India remained favourites to retain the Irani Cup at the end of fourth day’s proceedings here on Saturday. Jaiswal, who struck a sublime 213 in the first innings, scored a magnificent 144 out of his team’s second innings total of 246, setting a tough target of 437 for the hosts.

At stumps on the penultimate day, MP were 81 for 2, needing another 356 on the last day to win their

maiden one-match championship.

RoundGlass Punjab become I-League champions with a match to spare

NEW DELHI, MAR 4 (PTI): RoundGlass Punjab on Saturday entered their name in the history books by winning the I-League title with a game to spare, after notching up a dominating 4-0 victory over Rajasthan United here.

The champions’ entry into the top-tier ISL, however, is subject to fulfilment of financial criteria as agreed upon by all stakeholders.

Chencho Gyeltshen (16th), Luka Majcen (40th), Juan Mera 76th, Hmingthanmawia (91st) scored for Punjab, while Rajasthan drew a blank in the crucial match.

It was yet another flaw-

less performance by Staikos Vergetis’s team here at Ambedkar Stadium as the victory gave RoundGlass an unassailable eight-point lead atop the points table, crushing Sreenidi Deccan’s

hopes. The I-League trophy will return to Punjab for the first time since 201718, when Minerva Punjab won it.

This success will taste sweeter as it helped Round-

Glass inch closer to a berth in the Indian Super League – the top tier of club football -- as well as earning them a direct entry into the seasonending Super Cup.

Hero of the Match Chencho Gyeltshen capitalised on a defensive error in the 16th minute to start the scoring spree.

Khaiminthang Lhungdim crossed from the right wing and the defender standing ahead of Gyeltshen out-jumped him but missed the header. Gyeltshen did not. It took a deflection off Yash Tripathi and went in.

Rajasthan’s Uzbek midfielder Otabek Zokirov

failed to score in the 25th minute when his booming left-footer from just outside the box was kept out by Kiran Limbu.

His counterpart, Vishal Joon, did the same a couple of minutes later to deny Luka Majcen, who still has a match in hand to overtake Sreenidi’s David Castaneda as the top-scorer of this ILeague.

However, the Slovenian was not to be denied for long. He got his share of the pie in the 40th minute as Ajay Chhetri crossed from the left.

Four Rajasthan United men stood in a line, none of them trying to clear it.

Luka headed home coming in from behind, as Amritpal Singh remained a spectator.

Even though Rajasthan had enough ball possession, they did not have anybody forceful up front like Gyeltshen, Luka or Mera to pressurise the RoundGlass defence.

It seemed a matter of time before the Punjab team increased the margin. That finally happened when the three forwards combined in the 76th minute.

Luka floated the ball in from the right of the midfield to the left of the Rajasthan United box. Gyeltshen grabbed it and passed it to Mera.

Rest of India’s disposal, it will be a miracle if Madhya Pradesh team gets a chance to lay its hands on the prestigious trophy.

The day once again belonged to Jaiswal, who now has nine hundreds in 15 first-class games.

Such was his dominance that the next best score was 30 by all-rounder Atit Sheth.

The left-hander’s 157 ball knock had 16 fours and three sixes. The hundred came when he played a deft late cut to a delivery from off-spinner Saransh Jain, using the pace on the delivery.

But the best shot was

a flat-batted six over deep mid-wicket off opposition’s fastest bowler Avesh Khan (2/58). Neither pacers nor spinners -- Kumar Kartikeya (1/48), Saransh Jain (2/56) could really make an impact on the Mumbai opener, who would come down the track whenever the spinners flighted the ball.

BRIEF SCORES: Rest of India 484 and 246 in 71.3 overs (Yashasvi Jaiswal 144, Abhimanyu Easwaran 28, Atit Seth 30, Avesh Khan 2/58).

MP 294 and (target 437) 81/2 (Himanshu Mantri 51 not out, Mukesh Kumar 1/16).

Santosh Trophy becomes first domestic tournament to feature VAR

RIYADH, MAR 4 (PTI):

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) made its debut in a domestic tournament during the Santosh Trophy third-place match between Services and Punjab at the King Fahd International Stadium here on Saturday.

Two officials from Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) -Khaled Alturis and Faisal Alqhtani -- oversaw the match as VAR and assistant VAR.

Match referee Mohammed Al Daqqash, however, did not find a single occasion to use the VAR during the contest.

The semifinals, thirdplace match and the final of the national football championships for the Santosh Trophy are being played in Saudi Arabia, a first in the history of the tournament.

The players from Punjab and Services thus became the first Indian footballers to play under the VAR.

The VAR technology has been used on Indian soil on two occasions earlier.

It was used during the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in January-February 2022 from the quarterfinal stage.
