KOHIMA, MAY 11 (NPN): News about total lockdown in Nagaland (from 6 p.m. May 14 to May 21) spread like wildfire, and triggering thousands of people to rush off to stock essential items both in the state capital Kohima and commercial hub Dimapur. Many commodities especially varieties of vegetables including cereals were immediately sold. The panic buying has also pushed up prices of many items. The current panic buying potentially leads artificial scarcity and profiteering, if the past serve as any lesson. In a sellers market the buyer has hardly any choice

as prices of some scarce items soared. Wearing of face masks, maintaining social distancing went for a toss when people made a mad scramble to pick up their requirements. There were reports of some shops selling out their entire stock, especially fresh vegetables, meat and other essential commodities. Meanwhile, appealing to the people not to panic, Kohima Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KCCI) president Zhatuo Rutsa assured that supply chain for essential commodities was still intact and that there was enough stock of food supplies in the city. He also urged the peo-

ple to avoid panic buying as the upcoming lockdown would last only a week. He also explained that the suddenness of the lockdown announcement had led people to make a beeline for vegetable stalls. There was brief shortage but Rutsa said as the market was supplied with commodities based on the daily stock clearance, the supply would not be interrupted. Earlier, due to ongoing partial lockdown still in effect, Kohima wore a deserted look. Most of the major intersections were empty and, barring a few pharmacies, all the shops were closed. This led to a sharp drop in pedestrian and vehicular movements.

AYO urges HPC to devise additional modalities DIMAPUR, MAY 11 (NPN): Angami Youth Organisation (AYO) has appealed to HPC on Covid-19, to devise additional modalities to be effected during or immediately after the lockdown, with regard to providing effective vaccination to the public, apart from contact tracing and testing in the face of recent surge of Covid cases. AYO through its president Kekhrie Pfukha maintained that the suggestions were necessary because lockdown

for the sake of lockdown, might not necessarily serve its purpose, if these core issues were not addressed. AYO also urged public to extend full cooperation to frontline health workers, since empowering the overburdened and overstretched frontliners working under perilous conditions as it only helps people be equipped with a shield of protection. It reminded that in the first wave no one was aware about how to respond except to follow SOPs.

However in the changed situation, it called upon evolving responses according to situational realities. AYO said the only possible shield was vaccinations and adherence to SOP protocols. It said the lockdown could impact the state’s fragile economy especially the poor but expressed the hope that the government would assist in mitigating their problems. AYO also urged to business houses, especially those dealing in essential items not to hike up prices.
