As many as 25 states and six union territories have furnished affidavits before the SC on the measures they have taken in the wake of the massive spurt in Covid infections during the second wave. Sikkim and Uttarakhand are the two states that did not file affidavits, apart from two UTs, Chandigarh and Ladakh. Details enumerated in the affidavits relate to status of healthcare facilities, availability of oxygen, drugs, number of vaccinations administered so far, doses needed to vaccinate
the 18-44 age group and states’ view on the Centre’s policy on vaccine pricing. The matter was listed for hearing on Thursday but the case got adjourned due to the unavailability of one of the three judges, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud. While all 31 states and UTs have provided data on vaccination coverage during the first two phases of the drive, 17 have specifically mentioned the number of doses they have placed the orders for with Bharat Biotech and Serum Institute of India, which manufacture Covaxin and Covishield, respectively. A new CJBS COVID19 Tracker for India, developed by Cambridge Judge Business School and the National Institute of Economic
and Social Research in India working with Health Systems Transformation Platform in India, provides forecasts of the pandemic’s trajectory based on a recently developed model. These forecasts are based on a structural time series model that uses his-
torical data in estimation, but adapts to the trend emerging in the most recent period. The model is described in a paper in Harvard Data Science Review by Andrew Harvey, Emeritus Professor of Econometrics at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Cambridge, and Paul Kattuman, Reader in Economics at Cambridge Judge Business School, entitled “Time series models based on growth curves with applications to forecasting coronavirus”.
NEW DELHI, MAY 13 (AGENCIES): India will have enough doses to inoculate all citizens by December, the head of the national task force on Covid-19 vaccines said on Thursday, dangling the prospect of a final victory against a virus that is now devastating homes and families across the country. Between August and December, Niti Aayog member Dr Vinod Kumar Paul said, 216 crore vaccine doses would become available, which means that there would be surplus doses after every Indian is vaccinated. “Overall, 216 crore doses of vaccines will be manufactured in India between August and December, for India and for Indians. There should be no doubt that vaccines will be available for all as we move forward,” he said at a press briefing. Paul mentioned eight vaccines — a significant increase from the two currently in use — and the number of doses for each that are likely to be available in the country of 130 crore

Successful implementation of the plan would help India defeat the pandemic at the dawn of a new year, and also spark hopes of normalcy in the country battered by a brutal second wave of Covid-19. NPCC slams state govt for failing to control price rise D I M A P U R , M AY 1 3 (NPN): Referring to rocketing of prices of essential commodities in the State, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has accused the State government of failing to control surging prices as it can afford and live a life of royal luxury forgetting the poor who cannot even afford an increase of Rs 10 per kg. NPCC president K Therie in a press release alleged that price control had slipped out of the government’s mind as, citing shortage of goods and no stock, traders have increased prices due to lockdown-induced panic buying, adding that random price hike of essential commodities was taking a heavy toll on the public. He alleged that the wholesalers and retailers were looting poor citizens in the name of shortage and less stock.
Therie said the people were paying taxes to 11 governments through wholesalers and retailers on all imported goods, besides paying the neighbouring insurgents, police at all check gates and other government agencies, including taxes, forest, excise, geology and mining, etc. He pointed out that every sensible nation had an independent pricing commission headed by a judge or economist, which determined maximum retail price (MRP), stressing that price offences were criminal acts against the citizens. The NPCC chief stressed that a government was for the welfare of people, not for a party or for a privileged few. He said sustaining the economy of common people and facilitating the growth of economy was the responsibility of a welfare government.
12 to 16-week gap for Covishield doses: Centre NEW DELHI, MAY 13 (AGENCIES): The gap between the first and second doses of the Covishield COVID-19 vaccine has been increased to 12-16 weeksfrom the existing six-eight weeks- the government said Thursday. No changes have been announced in dosage intervals for Covaxin, which remains at four to six weeks. “Based on available real-life evidence, particularly from the United Kingdom, the COVID-19 Working Group has agreed to increase dosing interval between two doses of Covishield to 12-16 weeks. No change in intervals for Covaxin was recommended,” the government said in its statement. The changes were accepted Wednesday by the National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration,
which is led by NITI Aayog member Dr VK Paul, and by the Health Ministry. At a ministry briefing Dr Paul said the extension had been recommended “after careful study and without pressure from anyone”, and that the World Health Organization had been consulted. Adar Poonawalla, whose Serum Institute manufactures Covishield, told NDTV: “This is beneficial both from efficacy and immunogenicity standpoint... good scientific decision to increase the gap.” This is the second time in three months Covishield dosage intervals have been widened; in March states and UTs were told to increase the gap from 28 days to six-eight weeks “for better results”. Widening of Covishield dosage intervals has been linked to increased efficacy.
hopeful that it’ll be available in the market next week. We’re hopeful that the sale of the limited supply that has come from there (Russia), will begin next week,” he said. The list mentioned by Paul did not include the vaccines by Pfizer-BioNTech, Johnson and Johnson, Moderna and China’s Sinopharm. Paul said the department of biotechnology, the foreign ministry and other concerned departments “have been in touch with Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson from the beginning”.“They were officially asked if they would like to send doses to India or manufacture in India; well find partners and assist,” Paul was quoted by news agency ANI as saying. According to government data (as of Thursday morning), the cumulative number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in the country exceeded 17.72 crore. A total of 17,72,14,256 vaccine doses were administered through 25,70,537 sessions, according to a provisional report till 7 a.m.
