No shortage of Covid beds in Dimapur: H&FW clarifies NMC appeals to Govt ready to set up make-shift hospital if needed Correspondent
K O H I M A , M AY 1 7 (NPN): Admitting the surge in Covid-19 positive cases in Dimapur district, health & family welfare (H&FW) principal director (PD) Dr Neikhrielie Khimiao has, however, clarified there was no shortage of beds so far. Speaking to media persons at his office chamber here on Monday, he also claimed that healthcare facilities like community health centres (CHCs), primary health centres (PHCs), sub-centres, etc, in all dis-
tricts were also ready to provide medical treatment to Covid-19 patients. He claimed that healthcare workers in Dimapur district were managing the situation comfortably thus far. He said all private hospitals in Dimapur were extending their support to the government’s overall efforts, adding that the government would support them with oxygen supplies and concentrators when the consignment arrives. Khimiao asserted that the department was fully prepared to go ahead in setting up makeshift hospitals to tackle the surge in Covid19 cases in the State. Commenting on the overall Covid-19 scenario in the State, he remarked that cases might have slightly in-
creased in some districts, but admitted special emphasis was given to Kohima and Dimapur districts considering the surge in cases in these two districts. He informed the media that Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) had started functioning as Covid-19 hospital from Monday. On alternative arrangements for non-Covid patients, he assured that this would be done like last year during the first wave of pandemic when private hospitals were requested to assist in management of general patients like medicine or surgery-related. He assured that the State government would come out with measures like last year during the first wave of Covid-19 for poor
patients, whereby those enrolled under Ayushman Bharat would be able to avail free treatment from empanelled hospitals or get reimbursements. On reports of third wave of Covid-19 pandemic, the PD pointed out that, as per World Health Organisation, vaccination was the best weapon to combat the virus and hence vaccination would have to be carried out on a massive scale. He stressed that the people would also have to strictly follow Covid-appropriate behaviours. On Covid-related deaths, he said all the cases might not be confirmed unless a thorough overview was done on the patients dying in the districts. (Cont’d on p-3)

With Mukul Sangma holding his grip over Garo Hills, the party sources feel that with the three-term MP at the helm Congress would
be able to turn the table on the regional parties-BJP satrap currently in power in the state. Pala, whose stock has risen in the AICC, is most likely to be named as the next state president apparently since the part rank and file is yet to arrive at a consensus on the other contender in the shape of former Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope. Pala, who was earlier non-committal and was biding his time, has now thrown his hat in the ring. The AICC is inclined to back Pala on the expectation that the party might witness a comeback to power in 2023 riding on his leadership qualities and personal popularity.

AGARTALA, MAY 17 (PTI): Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Monday launched a 24x7 education channel, which will offer lessons to school students, in line with the NCERT syllabus, and help them “make up for the lost learning time” amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Deb, during his address following the launch of ‘’Vande Tripura’’, said this is the first such initiative by his government to ensure that students do not miss out on their lessons for an extended period of time. “We attach maximum importance to education. We have taken multiple steps, after our govern-
ment came to power threeand-a-half-years ago, to provide quality education to the students. The channel was introduced to engage the students in the process of learning, notwithstanding the restrictions that came with the pandemic,” Deb said. Education minister Ratan Lal Nath, on his part, said, his department launched an innovative scheme -- Notun Disha (new direction) which is aimed at assessing and boosting the academic prowess of elementary school students, but the pandemic has brought everything to a halt. Only recorded programmes would be shown on the newly launched channel this month, and live sessions would begin in June, involving students of around 4,500 schools. “Last year, out government had reached out to almost 90 per cent of all school students with lessons imparted over cable channels and mobile phones,” he added.

M’laya may touch 10,000 Covid-19 active cases: CM Correspondent
SHILLoNG, MAY 17: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma on Monday expressed concern that there was possibilities of several fold increase in the number of weeks to come in the State. Sangma said the state is looking at a tough situation in the next few weeks in combination with a shortage of vaccines that may cause inconvenience to the people. “We had anticipated that by May 12 we may touch 5,000 COVID-19 cases but we managed to slow things down by imposing lockdown in East Khasi Hills district and restrictions in other districts. But if this trend continues we may go beyond 7000 to 8000 cases or maybe even 10,000 in a short time,” the Sangma told reporters. He said that the government had imposed the lockdown and restrictions mainly to slow down the spread of the virus and during that time build infrastructure and also invest in manpower. “If we had not done so (lockdown) the situation would have been much worse,” he said. Anticipating the pos-
sibility of rise in COVID19 cases in the State, Sangma said the government has also decided to set up beds which will be run by the community in different parts of Shillong for cases which do not need hospital support. “We are looking at a tough situation for the next few weeks but if society and the state works together we are sure that we will be able to overcome this very difficult phase of maybe two-three weeks where we are seeing a rise in cases of pressure on the health care system, shortage of the vaccinations. So all these aspects are adding to a lot of pressure but we hope we will see things improve once this particular phase is over,” Sangma Minister said. Furthermore, Sangma also informed that oxygen cylinders have been doubled from 700 to close to 1500 since the beginning of the second Covid wave in the State. Stating that the state so far has spent close to Rs. 400 crore, which is substantially lesser than what was spent last year, Sangma said the figures were on the higher side last year as there was chaos all around.

Battle in Bengal
o win Bengal the BJp used every means both fair and foul and history was written when a lady in a wheelchair single handedly fought back like a wounded Tigress and turned the tide into a landslide. The mighty top guns of the BJp from prime minister Narendra modi, to home minister amit Shah, party president J.p. Nadda, central ministers and some chief ministers of BJp-ruled states gave mamata no respite. The 8-phase polls during the second wave of the covid pandemic was truly abnormal but the Election Commission of india (ECi) probably had the interest of the ruling party at the Centre in mind. This prolonged phase did not work in Bengal even if some manipulations were done. Bengalis chose mamata and in doing so, have made the top rulers of the country bite the dust. it was never an easy fight for mamata. Some would argue that the ECi is supposedly independent but so is CBi,ED .rBi etc or even the judiciary. The BJp had planned ahead since the 2016 assembly election when it contested 291 and won three. it also unwrapped its secret weapon in the guise of central probe agencies directed at TmC leaders whose names were linked to scams. Even after her historic third consecutive win, mamata still has to grapple with the Governor of West Bengal Jagdeep Dhankar, who will ensure that she does not have a peaceful tenure. The West Bengal Governor accorded consent to CBi to charge sheet ministers Firhad Hakim and Subrata mukherjee and party mLa madan mitra and BJp-defector Sovan Chatterjee, two days after installation of the new TmC government . They were named by CBi under Naradasting carried by the TV news channel in 2014. The money reportedly offered was to the tune of rs.5 lakh each by the TV channel reporter. as per the rule, the speaker of the house has to accord sanction for prosecution of members as they enjoy certain privileges. Bypassing this convention is not unlawful but if the assent is based mere remarks of the apex court on need to bring to book offenders, is like an overkill. However, much as one would have liked to give credit to the CBi for attempting to do its job; yet by excluding the names of two former TmC leaders who have defected to BJp- former union minister mukul roy and mamata’s close aide Suvendu adikari- has instead raised serious credibility issues. interestingly, BJp national vice president mukul roy is also prime accused in the Sharadha scam. He joined BJp in 2017 few months are he came under probe by the Enforcement Directorate. There are also several other politicians in other states like the mukul roys and Suvendu adhikaris. This means one will not be touched by the law if one belonged to the ruling party. Neither do political morality nor justice matter. it is a dangerous slide caused by a political coronavirus which is plaguing india to its very core. There are many within BJp who are resentful of how the party has become a tool under the hands of two top leaders whose words are law and dissent an offence. These are the same “forces of Emergency” that L.K. advani warned against in 2015.
dailydevotion His Ascension and Our Access
It came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven. —Luke 24:51
We have no experiences in our lives that correspond to the events in our Lord’s life after the transfiguration. From that moment forward His life was altogether substitutionary. Up to the time of the transfiguration, He had exhibited the normal, perfect life of a man. But from the transfiguration forward— Gethsemane, the Cross, the resurrection— everything is unfamiliar to us. His Cross is the door by which every member of the human race can enter into the life of God; by His resurrection He has the right to give eternal life to anyone, and by His ascension our Lord entered heaven, keeping the door open for humanity. The transfiguration was completed on the Mount of Ascension. If Jesus had gone to heaven directly from the Mount of Transfiguration, He would have gone alone. He would have been nothing more to us than a glorious Figure. But He turned His back on the glory, and came down from the mountain to identify Himself with fallen humanity. The ascension is the complete fulfillment of the transfiguration. Our Lord returned to His original glory, but not simply as the Son of God— He returned to His father as the Son of Man as well. There is now freedom of access for anyone straight to the very throne of God because of the ascension of the Son of Man. As the Son of Man, Jesus Christ deliberately limited His omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience. But now they are His in absolute, full power. As the Son of Man, Jesus Christ now has all the power at the throne of God. From His ascension forward He is the King of kings and Lord of lords.

Post-mortem
h e d ay t h a t t h e C OV I D t e s t i n g team (I have no idea where they came from. There are so many astronaut like creatures floating about from so many different departments, governments, hospitals, testing centres, that I stopped wondering a long time ago and now just meekly submit to sticks being poked into my nose and throat, and blood taken) declared I had the virus, my thoughts went immediately to death. So many people I know have died. Two died when I was on the phone trying to get oxygen for them. Another was admitted by me into hospital after begging the owner. Every morning a person I know turns into a memory. So, the next step was, what would I like to do with my body ? If I have COVID there is not much that can be done : they will probably come and take it, wrap it up in plastic and throw it in the heap to be burnt. But I don’t want to be burnt. I want to go like the actor Luke Perry. For years I have been demanding from my family that I be buried in my garden, that part of the earth that I have turned into a forest of calm and wonder. When I wake up every day, I throw the door
open to see its beauty. I hear the sounds of hundreds of busy birds day and night. I watch the seasons change as the berries of the trees change. My granddaughter found two four-leaved clovers hidden in the undergrowth. I want to be buried in this wild place. This Eden created by me, where all the trees are alive and the old Pipal tree looks after us all. I don’t want to be embalmed. I don’t want to be cremated in that ugly emotionless, soot filled government crematorium, and I would just die of shame if I learnt that I was burnt with wood. But how do I want to be buried ? Not wrapped in an old white sheet and smothered with salt. I want to be interred like the actor Luke Perry. Luke Perry died at the age of 52. I had never heard of him before he died, but his burial interested me. He was buried in his farm in a suit made of mushrooms, a mycelium based coffin designed to accelerate natural decomposition, and help remediate contaminated soils. It neutralizes toxins and boosts plant growth. There is a company called Coeio.com that makes them in America. “The self-recycling organic
Nurturing the Earth again cotton suit/shroud is infused with a biomix of mushroom mycelium and other microörganisms that aid in decomposition, work to neutralize toxins found in the body, and transfer nutrients to plant life, so that the remains of the person lost end up helping create new life.” “My dad discovered it, and was more excited by this than I have ever seen him,” his daughter wrote on Instagram. “He was buried in this suit, one of his final wishes. They are truly a beautiful thing for this beautiful planet, and I want to share it with all of you.” The idea came from the Dutch researcher Bob Hendrikx. The Living Cocoon, as he calls it in his company Loop, is made from mycelium -- the thread-like, vegetative part of a fungus. The idea is to accelerate the natural processes of decomposition, while also improving the surrounding soil as the body and its
container gradually break down within a couple of years. The Living Cocoon is made from fungal mycelium mixed with an organic substrate and placed into a mould. The mycelium gradually consumes the substrate, slowly growing to fill the mould to form the shape of the coffin, a process that takes about a week. The process is natural : it doesn’t require any heat, light or energy. As it breaks down in the soil it removes contaminants like heavy metals, petroleumbased fuels, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, herbicides and more. As Hendrikx explains, the aim is to to use the transformative powers of mycelium to close the loop of life. “Our behaviour is not only parasitic, it’s also short-sighted. The Living Cocoon enables people to become one with nature again, and to enrich the soil instead of polluting it.”
Hendrikx add “This will help us to convince local municipalities in the future to transform polluted areas into healthy woodland, using our bodies as nutrients.” Even in death humans kill the planet. Some religions embalm bodies so that the dead look as if they are sleeping. In just one country – the U.S.A- burials entail the use of approximately 4.3 million gallons of embalming fluid a year, according to Cornell University research, and 827,060 gallons of that is formaldehyde, methanol, benzene, glutaraldehyde and phenol They put the bodies into caskets which are increasing more expensive and bizarre. Caskets and vaults use 20 million board-feet of hardwoods, including rainforest woods, as well as 17,000 tons of copper and bronze, 64,500 tons of steel leaches iron, copper, lead, zinc and cobalt into the environment. And thousands of tonnes of toxic plastic. The funeral industry itself earns over 20 billion dollars. And it takes more than 10 years for the body to decompose and leach all these toxic substances into the soil. Other religions cremate. Lakhs of trees are cut down , especially man-
go trees. There will come a time in the next twenty year when there will be no mangoes left in mango country. Cremation in an electric crematorium is not much better. The process uses fossil fuels to reach, and maintain, 1,900 degrees Fahrenheit for more than two hours, releasing dioxins and mercury into the air and water, and creating byproducts like nitrogen oxide, dioxins and particulates that are found in acid rain. I cannot bear the idea of being environmentally vicious to other living beings when I die. So an eco friendly way will have to be found. It may seem bizarre now, but people will move towards “green funerals.” Starting with urns that biodegrade and grow into trees as the seeds within mix with the ashes of the cremated human. The concept of transforming our dead bodies into something that will nurture the earth again is something that appeals to me. All these years all the animals that have shared my life and gone to that great Heaven, where my husband lives, have been buried in the garden and we have grown trees on their bodies. They have simply changed form – as I will, if you allow me this luxury after I die.
India’s vaccine policy needs an urgent reset I ndia has four decades of experience in running a national immunisation programme for children and pregnant women. It has successfully conducted largescale mass vaccination drives for many years for polio elimination. Therefore, there was every reason to believe it could deliver Covid-19 vaccines efficiently; however, the ongoing drive in India is faltering (and even that is an understatement). The initial challenge of vaccine hesitancy was soon replaced by that of short supply (from early April onwards); with the opening of Covid-19 vaccination for all adults in the 18-44 age group, everyone, including those above 45 years, is finding it difficult to get vaccinated. The daily vaccination rate has come down to around two million doses, nearly half the vaccination rate at its peak in April. As per the vaccine distribution formula developed by the Union government and shared with the Supreme Court, for nearly 600 million people in the 18-44 age group, for May, the number of vaccine doses available (to be purchased by the state governments) will be around 20 million (another 20 million will be available to private hospitals). Vaccine manufacturers are not able to supply vaccines to states. The outcome is that many states have either not started
D
vaccinations for those in this age group or have halted it due to a shortage of supply. People are finding it difficult to book a slot on the CoWin portal — the government IT application for vaccination— and there is a real risk of vaccine inequity, where those without access to smartphones and the internet, may not get a shot for a long while. An elementary measure of performance of a well-functioning vaccination programme (or any health programme) is that the people eligible for vaccination (or health services) get it promptly. This doesn’t seem to be happening at the moment and demands the urgent attention of those at the highest levels of policymaking and implementation. A successful vaccination drive is the outcome of assured supply, simplified policies and an adaptive delivery approach. An assured vaccine supply is the first and absolute essential before the launch of the programme. If supplies are limited, doses available have to be used for vaccination of the identified priority groups, with phased openings for additional population groups. All countries across the world first secured vaccine supply and then opened up the vaccination in a graded manner for various population groups. The United States, the United Kingdom and
the European Union started to secure supplies by the middle of 2020. India seems to have erred at many steps in this process. It placed the first order with vaccine manufacturers, just a few days before the launch of the vaccination drive on January 16. Nearly 940 million people are eligible for vaccination and the current total vaccine production in India is 70-80 million doses a month. A few weeks ago, the Centre placed fresh orders for a total of 160 million doses for May, June and July, which will be used for the 45-plus age group. However, between March 16 and April 30, a total of 116 million people received their first shot. Even if we exclude a small fraction of those who received the Covaxin shot between March 15-31 (they may have already received their second shot in April, as the gap, in this case, is four weeks), nearly 110 million people were scheduled to return for their second shot between May and July 2021. It is likely that a small proportion of the 110 million people waiting for their second dose would go to the private sector. Even then, of the secured Union government vaccine supply of 160 million for May to July, only 50-million-odd shots would be available for 45 years and older coming for their first shot. Can India be assured of
increase in vaccine supply by July 2021? It is unlikely to be to the extent of 150 million doses a month as is being suggested. A large manufacturer in India planned to have a monthly production capacity of 100 million doses by January, a timeline which has now been shifted to July. After all, vaccine manufacturing and scaling up are complex processes and an ambitious timeline does not always work. The situation of other manufacturers is likely to be similar. The contribution of vaccine imports will be marginal to the overall supply for India. In the wake of supply constraints and challenges, the role of vaccination policy and delivery strategy becomes vital to avoid chaos at the vaccination centres. All policy options and delivery strategies should be reexamined and simplified. The increase in the gap between the two doses of Covishield, announced last week, and which was being suggested by many for months, is one such. There are others. Which population group can be safely asked to wait for their vaccine shots? Can vaccination for any age group (18-30 years) be put on hold till assured supply? Some of these are controversial questions – but they need to be addressed. Part of the problem seems to be the fact that there is politi-
cal decision-making in the areas that are purely technical. The political leadership should give a free hand to technical experts to decide and implement new strategies. The leaders of opposition parties have written to the government to revise the vaccination policy and strategy. This could make the government harden its stand, which it should not do. In the end, all that should matter is whether any policy decision, even if it is a reversal of an existing position, will help in ensuring vaccines reach people. For six weeks now, India’s vaccination drive has been struggling. How long must one wait before acknowledging that what was planned is not working? It is often said that Indian policymakers have mastered the art of drafting policies, which, while being perfect on paper, are poorly implemented on the ground. India’s Covid-19 vaccination efforts have areas for improvement, both in policy and implementation. The government should do all that is needed to make it work, here and now. Organisations express concern
WCH: Amid the surge in Covid cases in the state, Western Chakhesang Hoho (WCH) has expressed concern over the increasing death rates, saying it “can lead us to real trouble if serious thoughts are not given on burial issues.” In a statement, WCH president Dietho Rhakho said that many villages, colonies had framed own SOPs adding to the difficulties for burials. It therefore urged the government as well as the village authorities to consider opening up burial grounds so that at least the departed soul could be peacefully laid to rest. WCH appreciated the sincere concern & initiative taken by i/c Dimapur COVID-19 management, Kikheto Sema, who along with ADC Dimapur Atokhe Aye and commissioner of police, Rothihu Tetseo surveyed NCD cemetery at Zani village with regard to the rising number of COVID-19 related deaths. While stating that it was unfortunate to learn that “a government officer such as Khiketo Sema” who had gone for cemetery inspection had to pronounce the last prayer for the departed soul, WCH said that this was an eye opener.“The fear, stigma and misconceptions associated with COVID-19 need to be re-examined with sensible & positive attitude”, it maintained. Further, WCH said
that while maintaining safety measures was priority, a humanitarian approach was the need of the hour. It called upon the churches, communities, NGOs/civil societies, village councils and colony councils to “ponder seriously on these confronting issues”. DPON: Dimasa Public Organisation Nagaland (DPON) has expressed dismay over the system of vaccination stating that the online booking registration had deprived the poor and mostly illiterate people of Dhansiripar sub-division due to ignorance and non-possession of smartphones. In a press release, DPON president K Naben said that for the date May 17 and 18, the beneficiaries seemed mostly from town areas and very few were from the sub-division. “While every village maintained vigil to disallow outsiders, many have come from Dimapur town for vaccination, putting the citizens at risk”, DPON stated. In this regard, it urged the authority to evolve a mechanism for registration and booking only for the people of the area or subdivision. Further, it stated that the Community Health Centre (CHC), Dhansiripar was to cover the 26 villages for vaccination and the priority should therefore be to the people of the sub-division.

Narada case: 4 TMC leaders get bail
K O L K A T A , M AY 1 7 (AGENCIES): Two of Mamata Banerjee’s ministers and two other leaders were granted bail today after nearly seven hours of drama and confrontation as the Bengal Chief Minister spent much of the day at the CBI office in Kolkata. Bengal Ministers Firhad Hakim and Subrata Mukherjee were arrested early this morning in the Narada bribery case. So were Trinamool MLA Madan Mitra and former Trinamool leader Sovan Chatterjee, who joined the BJP but quit that party too. Central forces arrived at their homes and took them to the CBI office ahead of their formal arrest. Within an hour, Mamata Banerjee also arrived at the CBI office in Nizam Palace and dared the investigating agency to arrest her too. “The way they have been arrested without due procedure, CBI will have to arrest me also,” the Bengal Chief Minister reportedly said during her more than six-hour stake-out at the CBI. All four were ministers in the previous Mamata Banerjee government and were seen taking bribes in the Narada bribery tapes shot in 2014. But the Trinamool questioned why SuvenduAdhikari and Mukul Roy, former Trinamool leaders who were also on the Narada tapes, have escaped action. Both were Trinamool MPs at the time, but have since joined the BJP and recently became BJP MLAs. Mamata Banerjee has

vaccination “embolic and thrombotic events” on March 11 particularly with AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine (Covishield), a decision was taken to conduct an urgent in-depth analysis of the adverse events (AE) in India in the light of global concerns, the ministry said. The National AEFI committee noted that as of April 3, 75,435,381 vaccine doses had been administered (Covishield – 68,650,819; Covaxin – 6,784,562). “Of these, 65,944,106 were first doses and 9,491,275 second dose. Since the Covid-19 vaccination drive was initiated – more than 23,000 adverse events were reported through the CO-WIN platform reported from 684 of the 753 districts of the country. “Of these, only 700 cases (@ 9.3 cases / million doses administered)
were reported to be serious and severe in nature,” the statement said. “The AEFI data in India showed that there is a very miniscule but definitive risk of thromboembolic events. The reporting rate of these events in India is around 0.61/million doses, which is much lower than the 4 cases/million reported by UK’s regulator Medical and Health Regulatory Authority (MHRA). Germany has reported 10 events per million doses,” the statement stated. Thromboembolic events keep occurring in general population as background and scientific literature suggests that this risk is almost 70 per cent less in persons of South and South East Asian descent in comparison to those from European descent.
Central Vista case sees heated arguments in Delhi HC Cyclone Tauktae:180 military teams to assist states ering about the message regarding public health. The petition filed by Anya Malhotra, a translator, and Sohail Hashmi, historian and documentary filmmaker, stated that they are concerned by the “super spreading potential and threat” posed by the continuing construction at the project site and the plight of the workers who are being exposed to the infection on a daily basis. The Centre, in a written reply, stated the petition deserves to be dismissed with “exemplary costs” on the ground “that it is an abuse of the process of law”.

The division bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh on Monday heard arguments in the case and reserved the verdict. Senior Advocate Siddharth Luthra represented the petitioners. While the Centre was represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, Shapoorji Pallonji and Company Private Limited was represented by Senior Advocate Maninder Singh. Luthra submitted the authorities created an on-site “infrastructure” for workers overnight only after the petitioners approached the court and said there has been no
answer why the construction of Central Vista Avenue has been declared an “essential service”. Luthra argued that the Centre “chose to attack the messenger for getting what the message is, and the message is of health, lives and safety of everybody”, and that there is nothing sacrosanct about the timeline fixed for the project completion. “When we came to your lordships, we were afraid their dereliction was going to lead to an Auschwitz on the gardens of Central Delhi, on the gardens of India Gate,” Luthra argued, adding that they
are in no manner seeking to overreach the Supreme Court judgment permitting the Central Vista and the prayer was limited to construction during the peak phase of pandemic. SG Mehta submitted that the project has had its “own share of critics” whose ultimate purpose was “we don’t like the project, we will challenge it and we will stop it”, and described the PIL as a “second limb” of the challenges laid to the Central Vista project earlier. Mehta also objected to Luthra’s mention of Auschwitz in context of the construction Trees fallen on parked cars due to strong winds triggered by cyclone Tauktae, in Mumbai, Monday. She said she will continue to be safe as long as she consumes ‘gomutra’. The Congress has taken a dig at the MP’s statement. Participating in an event in Bhopal, Pragya Thakur said that the urine of a desi cow prevents the lungs from being infected with the virus. “I am in great pain. But I also consume cow urine every day. That is why I am safe from coronavirus. I don’t have to take any other medicine as long as I drink cow urine. I am not affected by this virus and God forbid will never be because I am taking this medicine (cow urine) regularly,” she said.

Colombian protest leaders present demands to govt
b o G o t a , M ay 1 7 (IaNS): After more than two weeks of violent protests in Colombia, national strike leaders have presented a list of demands to the country’s government. Among the demands presented on Sunday are an end to military deployments to protests and the use of firearms by police as well as measures to end sexual violence against women by security forces, reports Xinhua news agency. They are also demanding the inclusion of UN and church representatives in talks with the government. The two sides plan to meet again on Monday. Since the strike was called at the end of April, there have been numerous protests in cities across the country, some of which turned into
riots. On Sunday, thousands of people took to the streets once again for mostly peaceful protests in the capital Bogota and other cities. The government of conservative President Ivan Duque has denounced supply bottlenecks caused by protest roadblocks. At least 42 people have died during the protests, ac-
New CDC guidance dont permit widespread removal of masks
WaShINGtoN, May 17 (IaNS): The new mask guidance for vaccinated individuals does not grant permission for widespread removal of masks, the US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle Walensky said. “If they’re vaccinated, they are safe. If they are not vaccinated, they are not safe. They should still be wearing a mask or better yet, get vaccinated,” Xinhua news agency quoted Walensky as saying on ABC News on Sunday. The CDC Director and other health officials have stressed that their guidance is up to individuals to follow and if vaccinated people wish to continue wearing their masks they can. “We wanted to deliver the science of the individual level, but we also understand that these decisions have to be made at the community’s level,” she said. Since the new mask guidance was announced on May 13, many states, local governments and businesses have updated their ordinances based on the CDC’s recommendation that vaccinated individuals can be without face coverings indoors, outdoors or in large crowds. The guidelines still call for masks to be worn on public transportation and in homeless shelters, hospitals and prisons.
Some states, including California, Hawaii, Massachusetts and New York, are keeping their universal mask mandates intact. Meanwhile, schools should continue to require face masks “at all times, by all people in school facilities” for the rest of the academic year, according to updated CDC guidance issued on Saturday. Strict rules requiring mask use and physical distancing should remain in schools nationwide “regardless of the level of community transmission” of coronavirus, the CDC insisted. That’s because “students will not be fully vaccinated by the end of the 2020-2021 school year”, and school systems will need time to make “systems and policy adjustments” relating to their mask rules, t added. “The challenge here is that not everybody is eligible for vaccination,” Walensky told ABC on Sunday. “We still have children under the age of 11 and they should obviously still be wearing masks. So, if you’re unvaccinated, we are saying, wear a mask, contine to distance if you’re unvaccinated and practice all of those mitigation strategies.” “We are asking people to take their health into their own hands to get vaccinated, and if they don’t, then they continue to be at risk,” she added.
cording to the latest figures from the national ombudsman’s office. The strike committee has counted at least 50 deaths and more than 500 missing people as of Sunday. The country’s Defence Ministry says around 1,700 have been injured so far, including more than 900 security personnel.

Death toll in Gaza strip climbs to 181 Gaza, May 17 (IaNS): Tensions between Israel and Palestinian militant groups in the Gaza Strip have continued unabated for a seventh consecutive day, as the death toll in the coastal enclave climbed to 181, officials said. The Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza said in a statement on Sunday that since the escalation began on May 10, 181 Palestinians have been killed, including 52 children and 31 women, and 1,225 others had different injuries, reports Xinhua news agency. Militant groups, led by the armed wing of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), fired barrages of rockets from the Gaza Strip at cities and towns in central and southern Israel. Israeli fighter jets intensified its airstrikes on buildings, military posts
and facilities affiliated with the militants all over the strip, according to security sources. The sources said that the houses of Hamas chief in the Gaza Strip Yehya Sinwar and his brother were destroyed in the intensive Israeli airstrikes waged on the southern city of Khan Younis, adding that no injuries were reported. Ashraf al-Qedra, spokesman of the Health Ninistry in Gaza, told reporters that late Saturday night and on Sunday morning, 23 Palestinians were killed and over 50 wounded in the airstrikes on Gaza. An Israeli army spokesman said that in the last 24 hours, fighter jets struck 90 targets that belong to Hamas and the Islamic Jihad in Gaza, including the houses of Sinwar and his brother Mohammed.

Barca beat Chelsea to clinch Women’s CL title
GothenburG, MAY 17 (AGenCIeS): Barcelona became the first Spanish side to win the Women’s Champions League with a stunning performance to thrash Chelsea 4-0 in Gothenburg on Sunday. The La Liga champions scored all four goals inside 36 minutes as a Melanie Leupolz own goal, Alexia Putellas’s penalty and simple finishes from AitanaBonmati and Caroline Graham Hansen killed the game as a contest. DubAI, MAY 17 (PtI): The ICC on Monday dismissed claims made by news channel Al Jazeera that India’s Test matches against England (2016) and Australia (2017) were fixed, saying the passages of play identified as fixed were entirely predictable, and therefore “implausible as a fix”. Al Jazeera in a documentary—‘Cricket’s Match Fixers’—released in 2018 had claimed that India’s game against England in Chennai in 2016 and the one against Australia in 2017 in Ranchi were fixed. another big chance wide for Barca before Harder was denied again by a last-ditch tackle in an end-to-end start. But Chelsea were shell-shocked once Hermoso went down under Leupolz’s challenge and Putellas confidently slotted home the spot-kick. A brilliant team move
to tap into an empty net. Two years ago it was Barca who found themselves 4-0 down after just 30 minutes against a dominant Lyon side. The French giants had won this competition for the past five seasons, but their reign was ended by Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals, who were then eliminated by Barcelona in the last four. Chelsea will be hoping to show similar resilience to come back and win the competition for the first time as they missed out on becoming the first English side to become European champions since Arsenal in 2007. Sam Kerr missed a number of chances to pull a goal back for Emma Hayes’s women in the second-half. though they were going to have to surrender top spot to their city rivals. Real, who were leading and went on to win at Athletic Bilbao, were in pole position for the title with two minutes remaining. Simeone’s side, who have led the table since November and at one stage had a 10-point lead at the
top, dominated throughout but initially failed to take advantage of a glut of chances, with the Argentine urging them forward. Suarez hit the post and flashed a drive wide as the hosts peppered the Osasuna goal with 16 shots during the first half. And Stefan Savic then had a second-half goal disallowed after a VAR review correctly found he was offside when volleying in from close range. Budimir’s header, which was also awarded after a review, came after a superb run and cross from Ruben Garcia but was one of just two efforts on target for the visitors. However, Lodi, who was introduced as a substitute settled home nerves with a clinical left-foot effort into the top corner and the hosts more than deserved their victory. Barcelona had also started Sunday’s penultimate round of fixtures in contention for a fifth title in seven years but lost 2-1 at home to Celta Vigo.

It must regain its credibility, confidence in its integrity and performance,” Keller said, but pointing out he found “resistance and walls” within the federation when trying to “professionalise and modernise” existing structures. Keller said he didn’t “succeed in achieving a trusting, reliable and collegial cooperation within the bodies of the DFB,” and mentioned that after a second tax raid at DFB headquarters he realized that “far too often it was about internal power fights, securing advantages, and working on one’s image in the public life.” He added that implementing his programme was repeatedly made “difficult or impossible in many places.”
berLIn, MAY 17 (IAnS): German football federation (DFB) president Fritz Keller resigned on Monday after comparing vice president Rainer Koch to a Nazi judge. Keller, who at first resisted resigning, stated last week he was ready to leave his position after he compared Koch to Nazi judge Roland Freisler at a meeting in April. Further details of the comparison are not known. In a statement, Keller said he was “taking personal responsibility” for his “lapse at the executive committee meeting, which is to remain the sad low point of the DFB’s desolate leadership situation”, DPA reports.
Keller’s apology earlier this month was not accepted by Koch, while he also lost a no-confidence vote from regional federation chiefs. Freisler attended the Wa n n s e e C o n f e r e n c e, which set in motion the Holocaust. Later, he was appointed president of the

M A D r I D, M AY 1 7 (AGenCIeS): Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has denied reports he has told his players he is leaving the Spanish giants. Media reports claimed the Frenchman informed his squad a week ago that he would leave at the end of the season. Zidane led Real to a 1-0 win at Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, to take the La Liga title race to the final day. “How could I tell the players I’m leaving now? We’re giving our everything for the title and I just say ‘by the way, I’m off ’?” he said. “People outside the club can say whatever they like, but I would never, ever say that to my players.” Real are two points behind league leaders Atletico Madrid, who came from behind to beat Osasuna 2-1 at home. Zidane’s side face Villarreal at the Bernabeu next Sunday on the final day of the season knowing that, if Atletico lose or draw at Real Valladolid, victory would give them the title.
