‘Diagnosing black fungus a challenge’ Correspondent
KOHIMA, MAY 22 (NPN): A senior doctor has said that diagnosing Mucormycosis (Black Fungus) would be a challenge as confirming the disease had to undergo numerous tests. Speaking to Nagaland Post, ENT surgeon and MS CIHSR Dimapur, Dr. Clement Momin, said that so far there were no confirmed cases of mucormycosis in the state. He, however, said they were keeping a close watch. He said to diagnose
mucormycosis was not easy since samples had to be collected from appropriate areas to find out exactly from where it was infected. Dr. Momin said detecting mucormycosis, which required CT Scan, endoscopy and proper sampling, would, therefore, be a challenge. He informed that preliminary report could take a day, but for confirmation it could take longer time than expected. ENT Surgeon said the disease was not only confined with COVID patients or COVID recov-
ered patients. He said the fungus tends to grow when a person’s immune was suppressed, adding patients with diabetes also get affected. If the disease was detected at early stage, it is treatable, however, Dr. Momin said since the disease was aggressive it becomes difficult to treat once it infects the eyes and brain. Asked whether the state had enough stock of medicines to treat mucormycosis, he said that since the entire country was facing shortage of drugs there were limited stocks.
