Donald Trump elected US President
AMERICAN VOTERS DELIVER VERDICT which proved all pundits wrong NEW YORK, Nov 9 (AGENCIES): In a result that stunned the world, on November 8, 2016 American voters caused a shockwave by delivering a humiliating rebuke to America’s political establishment and to the hangers-on, the pollsters, the pundits, the American mainstream media elites, the celebrities who surrounded Hillary Clinton on stages when they decided to put the future of their nation in the hands of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the USA, an untested leader who was described by American mainstream media as one with deep character flaws and no experience in governance or national security. The 70-year-old billionaire businessman, who took to politics only 18 months ago, won with a comfortable margin securing 289 electoral college votes against Clinton’s 218. To win the presidential election, a candidate needs 270 of the 538 electoral college votes. It was a heart-break for Democratic nominee
Donald Trump US President elect during his victory speech.
Clinton, who was hoping to become the first woman president of the US, as Trump edged past her in a see-saw battle. Clinton, who did not make a traditional concession speech, called Trump and congratulated him. Trump reciprocated in his victory speech, saying she fought very hard and the country owes her a major debt of gratitude for her service to it. Seeking to “bind the wounds of division” after a bitter and divisive campaign, Trump pledged to be the President for all Americans and asked
Republicans, Democrats and independents across the country to come together as one united people. Trump, addressing his supporters at his campaign headquarters, said, “It is time for us to come together as one united people. I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president of all Americans.” Against the backdrop of a highly vitriolic and divisive campaign, Trump talked of his campaign “being a movement comprising people of all races and backgrounds,” possibly surprising many, as evidenced by
an eruption of cheers when he said the word “races.” “Ours was not a campaign, but a movement. It is a movement comprising from all races, background and believes. Working together, we would begin the urgent task of rebuilding the country. The country has a tremendous potential,” he said. Once considered a long shot for the presidency, the billionaire from New York tapped into the disillusionment of the average white working class American against the establishment, molding it into vicious antiimmigrant rhetoric which proved to be an electoral gold mine. Trump, a political outsider, was rebuked by many top Republicans for his remarks on women and immigrants and several party leaders had refused to back him despite his comprehensive win in the primaries. US President Barack Obama called the Presidentelect to congratulate him and invited him to the White House on Thursday. President Obama, who had campaigned ferociously
against Trump after calling him unfit to hold office, invited him to the White House on Thursday to discussion transition. Trump will be sworn in on January 20, the traditional Inauguration Day. Humbled Democratic leaders and others who had predicted Clinton would win 300 electoral votes or many more instead watched, agape, as Trump picked off states that Barack
Obama had won handily. Hillary Clinton vastly outspent Donald Trump when it came it campaign ad buys during the general election but did not receive a win to pay it off. By the beginning of November, Bloomberg reported last week, Clinton spent $211.4 million dollars in ad buys, whereas Trump only spent $74 million dollars in ad buys this general election cycle.
We owe Trump open mind, chance to lead: Hillary Hillary Clinton Wednesday graciously accepted her defeat, saying she hopes Donald Trump will be a successful President for all Americans and that the “deeply divided” nation owes him “an open mind and the chance to lead.” “This is not the outcome we wanted or we worked so hard for. And I’m sorry that we didn’t win this election for the values we share and for the vision we hold for our country,” Clinton told a large gathering of her supporters here in as she took the podium to concede

the closely-fought elections. Her supporters stood up and applauded as Clinton walked in with her husband Bill Clinton, daughter Chelsea and son-in-law Mark, and running mate Tim Kaine.
World leaders congratulate Trump WASHINGTON, NOV 9 (AGENCIES): After Republican Donald J. Trump was announced as the United States president-elect, leaders worldwide sent congratulations. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Trump. “We look forward to working with you closely to take India-U.S. bilateral ties to a new height,” Modi wrote on Twitter. Ru s s i a n P r e s i d e n t Vladimir Putin said he wants to work with a Trump administration to “lift Russian-U.S. relations out of the current crisis, resolve issues on the international agenda, look for effective responses to global security challenges.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he is confident he and Trump can “continue to strengthen the unique alliance between our two countries and bring it to ever greater heights.” German Chancellor Angela Merkel has congratulated Donald Trump on his win in the US presidential election, before underlining the importance of their countries’ relationship and reminding the presidentelect of their shared values. “Whoever the American people elect as their
president in free and fair elections, that has a significance far beyond the USA,” the chancellor said in Berlin on Wednesday. In his congratulatory statement, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the stability of the Asia-Pacific region brings peace and prosperity to the United States -calling Japan and the United States “unwavering allies.” U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May said her country -- which has an “enduring and special relationship” with the United States -- will remain a strong partner on trade, security and defense. Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte offered “warm congratulations” to Trump, saying he looks forward to working with him to enhance relations, a Philippine minister was quoted by the Mirror online as saying. Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi congratulated Trump on his victory, the Egyptian presidency said in a statement. Sisi wished Trump success as the new US president, hoping to enhance Egyptian-US cooperation at all levels. Iranian leadership has called on the United States to stand by the 2015 nuclear agreement, which Trump has characterized as a “bad deal.”

Things have been more concentrated on issues like-suspensions, merger of one party to the other etc., he said, while cautioning that the Central government has taken note of all the happenings in the state. Recalling his “nightmare-journey”, referring to the pathetic road conditions, to Longwa in Mon district and Pangti village under Wokha recently, Acharya said he was surprised to see that such areas have been left neglected and not as expected. Assuring customers that there is no need to panic in the wake of demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes, a senior SBI official today said cash is being airlifted
from Kolkata to the Northeastern region. “There is no need to panic. No need to worry. There is no shortage of Rs 100 notes. Cash is being airlifted from Kolkata from today itself for the Northeastern states,” SBI North East Circle Chief General Manager PVSLN Murty told reporters here. Cash requirement of Northeastern states is met through supplies from Kolkata and is generally brought by road and rail routes, he added. “No need to rush to the banks tomorrow to exchange your Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. He also appealed to the public to use their debit and
credit cards and other online payment facilities for the next few days. To handle the extra rush of customers, all banks will open extra cash disbursement counters and will remain open for public transaction for additional two hours till 6 pm for some time, the SBI CGM said. Banks will reopen tomorrow and the ATMs will be functional from the day after, Murty said. “New Rs 2,000 notes will also be disbursed through those counters...,” he added. IMPHAL, Nov 9: UNC sponsored economic blockade triggered a severely vehicle fuel scarcity in Manipur. IOC’s oil depots in Imphal have almost dried up on Wednesday. No petrol was distributed by any of the retail outlets except in five outlets on Wednesday even though diesel was issued to the public for the day. An official source said that there was no petrol stock at IOC’s oil depots in Imphal after 44 Kiloliter of petrol in the stock was distributed to the retail outlets on Tuesday. All retail outlets will remain close from November 10 onward. However, diesel was being distributed as its stock is better. A total of 44 kilolitre of diesel was
distributed to the outlets today, the official source added. The depots will go on running dry until oil tankers being stranded in Assam’s Khatkati arrived at Imphal. Over 143 oil tankers and LPG bullet tanker (bulk LPG carriers) were reportedly stranded there for around 10 days. The United Naga Council (UNC) has been imposing an indefinite economic blockade on the national highways passing through Naga dominated areas since October 31 last. The blockade was in continuation of its stir against Manipur government’s proposed declaration of Sadar Hills and Jiribam as full-fledged revenue districts of the state by Ibobi government. Earlier, they imposed
a 48-hour general strike from October 30 midnight. All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) had imposed an economic blockade on the national highways. However, it was call-off on November 4 last after an agreement was reached with the state government. Owing to the blockade, altogether 143 oil tankers and LPG bullet tankers are stranded at Khatkhati of Assam. The stranded vehicles include 43 tankers loaded with 636 Kl of petrol, 56 tankers loaded with 896 Kl of diesel, 38 bullet tankers loaded with 266 metric tonnes of LPG, six tankers loaded with 72 Kl of SK Oil and two tankers loaded with 40 Kl of ATF, according to the official source. The prevailing oil
crisis was discussed in a meeting of high ranking state government officials and IOC officials on Tuesday evening. They have discussed about escorting the stranded vehicles up to Imphal, another source said. Meanwhile, reports said that around 120 newly arrived loaded Imphalbound loaded trucks were stranded at Mao gate by this evening after almost all the stranded trucks were escorted back to Imphal by the security forces. O n ly 1 9 I m p h a l bound loaded trucks were also stranded at Leingangpokpi of Jiribam along the Imphal-Jiribam section NH-37 as no other loaded trucks entered from Assam site at Jiri gate as Jiribam District Demand Committee (JDDC) is also imposing a five-day economic
blockade starting from midnight of November 7. Amidst the blockade, a total of 120 loaded trucks stranded at various places along the highway (NH37) were brought to Imphal by security forces today. The UNC sponsored blockade is also going on in full swing along the Imphal-Moreh section of Trans Asian Highway no. 1 as UNC supporters were blocking the vehicles carrying economic items. Around 200 Imphalbound vehicles including goods loaded 125 vans, 14 buses, 18 DI Tata and 53 Tata Sumo were stranded near Tengnoupal police station for the last few days. In addition to the ongoing economic blockade of the UNC, there is a possibility of another economic blockade in Sadar hills area.

2900 IMA NCHISF calls for indefinite rail Problems notwithstanding; N-E members to protest common man hails demonetisation against NMC bill blockade from November 14 Guwahati/Agartala/Aizawl/Silchar, Nov 9 (IANS): The central government’s move to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination currency notes evoked mixed reactions with the common people generally welcoming it in Assam, Tripura, Mizoram and some other places in northeast India on Wednesday. Although markets and other businesses in different parts of the state witnessed low-key activity due to the demonetisation, the citizens, particularly the common people, praised it as a step towards freeing the country of black money. Rattled shopkeepers refused to accept the currency notes of demonetised denominations and wanted only Rs 100 and below. “It remained a difficult day for people like us. No one accepted Rs 500 notes, not to talk of Rs 1,000 notes in the market. After all, how can one arrange so much of Rs 100 currency and below all of a sudden? I had to buy half the quantity of all the stuff,” said Brojen Bora,
a resident of Guwahati’s Uzan Bazar area. Bora, however, complimented Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his team for the unique initiative to stop circulation of fake currency as well as black money. In Tripura, while a section of traders were accepting the demonetised currency notes, a large section of traders declined. Most jewellers, cooking gas dealers, travel agencies in Tripura were not accepting the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, putting a large number of people to great trouble. However, most petrol pumps and medicine shops in Tripura were accepting the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. The situation in neighbouring Mizoram and Southern Assam was no different. Tripura Minister for Finance and Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Bhanulal Saha told IANS: “To my knowledge, the currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 have been scrapped to check black money. People would be
276 gm of heroin seized
Aizawl, Nov 9 (PTI): Mizoram Excise and Narcotics department’s Anti Narcotic Squad with the help of local members of civil societies seized 276 gm of heroin at three different places in Aizawl today, department spokeperson said. The spokesperson said that the contraband worth around Rupees ten lakh in the local market was reportedly smuggled from neighbouring Myanmar via the border district of

put to trouble, though temporarily. The Government of India should take further steps to deal with the situation.” “Don’t know whether the step announced by the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) would achieve the desire goal in the long run,” he added. Senior Congress leader Ratan Lal Nath, however, criticised the Prime Minister, saying that without consulting the economists and experts, the Central government all of a sudden and unilaterally banned the high denomination notes, putting the people to trouble. “We also want the government to act tough against the hoarders and black money holders, but this should not be at the cost of the common people,” said Nath, former opposition leader in the Tripura Assembly. A bank union leader said: “Prime Minister Modi’s step would not only have strong impact on black money but also help make the economy stronger by stopping the circulation of fake notes in the market.”

H afl o ng , N ov 9 (Agencies): The North Cachar Hills Indigenous Students Forum (NCHISF), a students’ organization said that they were compelled to call for indefinite railway blocked in the hills section of newly converted BG line. The president of the NCHISF David Keivom in a press meet held today in Haflong said the railway authorities have not fulfilled their promises to pay all the necessary compensation as per their promise made on May 2, 2016, within 30 days even after they received proper estimates which was submitted to the concerned railway authority on August 18. It also said that even the BG line and east west corridor is constructed for the benefit of public had destroyed many houses, schools and approach roads causing ecological imbalance due to damage of river beds and diversion of natural flow of water leading to water crisis and not doing anything to restore water supply The student
body also demanded action against the HCC against sluggish progress of NH 54 construction work and demanded immediate completion and to stop engagement of sub-contractors who are not experts. The road which is to be converted in to two-lane is not being completed till date due to slackness of the authority, the body said. The NCHISF also demanded early completion of Jatinga -Haflong Road under NHAI, which is now in deplorable condition creating a serious communication problem to commuters due to negligence of the Authority, Simplex and engaged Construction Company in the said work and use of substandard materials as the road are started deteriorating even after few days. It can be mentioned here that earlier also several organizations had organized several protest rallies and blockades for early completion of the road from Jatinga to Haflong road by the engaged company to whom work was allotted decade ago.

Chaos at petrol pumps, retailers over notes
People at a petrol pump to fill petrol as the Prime minister ordered to ban 500 and 1000 rupees notes as part of NDA Govt’s fight against black money and corruption in Faridabad on Wednesday. (PTI)
MUMBAI/NEW DELHI, NOV 9 (AGENCIES): The sudden withdrawal of 500 and 1,000 rupee notes from circulation, in a bid to flush out money hidden from the tax man, caused chaos on Wednesday as petrol pumps and other retailers refused to accept the larger bills, and bank ATMs stayed closed. The shock measure also sent shudders through the investment community on a day when the markets were also sent reeling by the prospect of Republican candidate Donald Trump winning the US election, with the National Stock Exchange share index slumping as much as 6.3 per cent in early trade. The move, announced
late on Tuesday night, aims to bring thousands of crores worth of unaccounted wealth into the mainstream economy and curb corruption. It was also designed to stop anti-India militants suspected of using fake 500 rupee notes to fund operations. From midnight, the larger banknotes ceased to be legal tender for transactions other than exchanging them at banks for smaller notes or new 500 and 2000 rupee notes that the government will release on Thursday. To be effective it had to be unexpected, analysts said, but the abrupt step was fraught with problems for an economy largely fuelled by cash, especially
for India’s poorest citizens, many of whom work in the large rural economy. ”Life is going to become difficult for all from the poorest to the richest” regardless of whether they had declared their wealth or not, columnist Swaminathan Aiyar told news channel ET Now. “As far as the rural economy is concerned there is going to a huge dry up of purchasing power,” he said, adding there will be uncertainty over what notes will be accepted. Petrol pumps and hospitals refused to accept the larger denomination banknotes, even though the government had given them a waiver to continue accepting the bills. Meanwhile bank ATMs were closed and many are likely to remain shut on Thursday as banks had to prepare for the flood of people seeking to exchange the larger banknotes for smaller ones or the new series. In Mumbai, long lines formed at the privatelyoperated tolls at a major bridge traversing the city as the company, MEP Infrastructure, refused to accept 500 and 1,000 rupees notes. In the stock market, real estate firms that depend on cash transactions were hit particularly hard, with DLF Ltd, India’s biggest property developer, was down 17 per cent.

Research can’t be bound in hierarchy: Javadekar
Zeliang, Patton call on union ministers
Prakash Javadekar
NEW DELHI, NOV 9 (PTI): Research cannot be bound in hierarchy, HRD minister Prakash Javadekar today said as he launched a first ever initiative where technology students in institutions across the country would rack their brains to come up with solutions to problems faced by Central ministries. “There can’t be research in hierarchy. Only promotions happen in hierarchy,” Javaekar said emphasising that freedom and inquisitiveness is needed for innovation. He was speaking at the launch of ‘Smart India Hackathon’ 2017, a 36-hour nonstop digital competition in which thousands of students from educational institutions across the country would work on 500 problem statements received from over a dozen ministries and come up with solutions. Addressing the students present, Javadekar said that tapping the potential of the youth is the key and he has complete faith
that they would be able to solve these problems. Emphasising on the importance of innovation, he said that new thinking is required and highlighted online registration in hospitals like AIIMS as examples. The world is changing at an amazing pace, he said. Javadekar, however, rued that even when India was referred to as an “IT superpower”, it has not come up with giants like facebook, twitter, linkedin, Whatsaapp, google or Windows even when some Indian must have been involved in their coming up. Such innovative entities should come up in India now and for this youth has to be encouraged, the HRD minister said. Javadekar also announced that a MOOCS platform will also soon come up which will spread education far and wide into the country. As he spoke on the need for innovation, Javadekar said “after yesterday’s surgical strike on blackmoney, social media is abuzz with innovative quips on the issue.” AICTE chairman Anil Sahasrabuddhe said that a Hackathon which had been organised in Pune, where students solved problems of the municipal bodies through digital solutions had come to notice. The idea now is to take this concept nationwide, he said.
Union minister Venkaiah Naidu with T.R. Zeliang, Y. Patton, Tohanba and KG Kenye at New Delhi on Wednesday.
DIMAPUR, NOV 9 (NPN): State chief minister T.R. Zeliang on Wednesday called on Union minister for Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu and explained in detail on the practical difficulties faced by small states to contribute 50% of funds for starting up activities to make Kohima a smart city, selected by the centre. According to the two unions, in the charter of demand submitted to the government, they demanded immediate termination of all 16 primary teachers before July 5, 2016 and publish the order to this effect in all local dailies with a copy endorsed to ZSU(N) and KSO (N). They also demanded immediate conduct of open recruitment on or before August 5, 2016 at the district level for free and fair participation of all indigenous candidates with DC Peren as chairman, SDEO as member secretary assisted by two representatives each from the school education department, ZSUN and KSO Nagaland. Their demand also included endorsing a copy of the result (selected candidates) to the ZSU(N) and KSO(N) and each to both the representatives of 6th and 7th A/C. Meanwhile, the ZSU(N) and KSO(N) have informed all the federating units to extend cooperation, adding that further information would be issued in due course.
NEW DELHI, NOV 9 (PTI): The city’s air quality finally turned a shade better today after a prolonged spell of smog marked by “severe” level of pollutants that lingered on for nearly a week. Pollution experts attributed the improvement, to wind speed gaining momentum and blowing from the west region instead of the north west region, which is the hotspot of stubble burning. Centre’s System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) recorded the av-
Alliance. Meanwhile, PRO Nagaland House Kuolie Mere in an another press statement said that Y. Patton called on Union Minister of State for Home, Hansraj Gangaram Ahir at New Delhi and congratulated him on his new assignment. Patton discussed with him all the pending projects relating to modernization of police forces and improvement of the existing police infrastructure facilities in the State. PRO said that the union minister has assured his full cooperation. Further PRO said that the union minister has accepted the invitation to inaugurate 13 IRB at Yachang and to witness the up-coming Hornbill Festival.

Vol. XXVI NO. 334 Dimapur, Thursday, November 10, 2016
Flawed or fraud ?
W
hat the Dimapur District Congress Committee(DCC) had pointed out over the drastic reduction of electoral rolls of for the 23 municipal wards wherein it dropped from 1,15,395 voters in 2004 to 90,000 in 2016 merits serious consideration. According to the DCC, a case in point was Ward No.19 in New Market area where names of 400 voters were deleted and the roll reduced to just 632 voters during the same period. Also in Burma Camp’s Ward No.22, DCC stated that the voter list decreased to 1915 in 2016 from 5425 in 2004. The argument was that voters’ list normally increased by around 3% annually and taking into account the revision was done after a gap of 12 years, the number of voters ought to have increased by 25% by 2016 from 2004. Interestingly, DCC claimed that the decrease in number of voters was recorded in all 102 polling booths in the 23 wards. Further, DCC said it was also not possible for GBs and chairmen to verify voters listed in the 2016 ECI electoral roll for the municipal election, as asked to by the enumerators. The role of enumerators has come under scanner on many occasions. However, even in Dimapur itself, scores of households in some colonies “disappeared from the radar of the enumerators” for unexplained reasons. Surely, if a census of houses was done and duly numbered, the enumerators could not be blind? There were several rows of prominently located houses in a particular colony and it was shocking that they did not figure in the electoral roll where hundreds of names were missing from the revised roll. The question that arises in view of the reduction in number of voters is whether it was due to such misses or lapses during revision and enumeration? This may not necessarily support the contention of present NPCC chief K.Therie regarding the alleged dubious electoral rolls but certainly the flaws during revision and enumeration come under cloud. On the other hand, when the CEO sought to amplify the department’s achievement, what was cited was that the census was based upon which the percentage of people who were enrolled in the voter’s list. Nagaland recorded an abnormal growth rate of 56.08% in 1991 and continued with the ‘record’ of achieving a 64.41% population growth rate in 2001. As per the 2001 census, the population of Nagaland was 19,88,636 while in the census for 2011, the population was recorded as 19,80,602. The difference between the 2001 and 2011 census shows a decrease of 8034. Perhaps much more needs to be done with the census and the electoral roll. The bottom line is, that even with statistics, leaving aside corruption, there is serious lack of honesty. One of the factors that has created controversies is that those involved with enumeration have either not been committed nor properly chosen and trained. It could also be that the very kind of election practised in the state does leave more room for manipulation for vested interests than form streamlining and cleansing. Be that as it may, it may also be recalled that in the recent past, voters in a village outnumbered the census figures while in many others, the increase in the number of voters was astounding.
DailyDevotion Sacred Service I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ… —Colossians 1:24 The Christian worker has to be a sacred “gobetween.” He must be so closely identified with his Lord and the reality of His redemption that Christ can continually bring His creating life through him. I am not referring to the strength of one individual’s personality being superimposed on another, but the real presence of Christ coming through every aspect of the worker’s life. When we preach the historical facts of the life and death of our Lord as they are conveyed in the New Testament, our words are made sacred. God uses these words, on the basis of His redemption, to create something in those who listen which otherwise could never have been created. If we simply preach the effects of redemption in the human life instead of the revealed, divine truth regarding Jesus Himself, the result is not new birth in those who listen. The result is a refined religious lifestyle, and the Spirit of God cannot witness to it because such preaching is in a realm other than His. We must make sure that we are living in such harmony with God that as we proclaim His truth He can create in others those things which He alone can do. When we say, “What a wonderful personality, what a fascinating person, and what wonderful insight!” then what opportunity does the gospel of God have through all of that? It cannot get through, because the attraction is to the messenger and not the message. If a person attracts through his personality, that becomes his appeal. If, however, he is identified with the Lord Himself, then the appeal becomes what Jesus Christ can do. The danger is to glory in men, yet Jesus says we are to lift up only Him (see John 12:32).

nother school has been burnt down in the Valley. This is the 25th in the last two months. What it conveys is that those who are fighting for separation from India are not interested in education. They want the boys to turn into stone-pelters. How does this help the youth? I was recently in Srinagar and talked to some of the stone-pelters. They said they wanted an independent Islamic state and that India should recognize this. I told them that we were already exasperated of one Islamic state. How did they expect India to help them establish another one on its border? They said that this was your problem, not theirs. Their demand questions the partition itself. When the paramount position of the British lapsed, it was left to the ruler to accede to any of the two countries, India or Pakistan. The Maharaja of Srinagar wanted to stay independent but when the regular and irregular soldiers of Pakistan came right up to Baramulla, he acceded to

India. But India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru promised to hold a plebiscite as soon as peace returned to state. True, things are normal in a way but everything can be upset if and when the people’s consent is enumerated. It would not be India versus Pakistan but the Gita versus the Koran. The youth may not be aware of all this but since more than 90 percent people in the valley are Muslims, their natural desire is to establish an Islamic state. I told the boys that any change in the borders of India would have to be approved by its parliament. But apparently this argument of mine did not satisfy them. In the heart of Srinagar, some Pakistani flags are flying even today. But this is to irritate New Delhi. What they want is their own country which naturally would be Islamic. New Delhi has woken up to the problem and Home Minister Rajnath Singh has visited Srinagar to assess the situation. Apparently, he has not liked what he
saw. New Delhi’s response has been to send more forces to Srinagar. The fact is that even the Hurriyat leaders, who represent separatists, did not want to meet the Home Minister. Obviously, there is no meeting Kuldip point. Former state chief minister and National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah, who is all brim and stone when not in power, has said that the Indian leaders should meet the Hurriyat representatives and hold talks with Pakistan. Why couldn’t he or his son Omar Abdullah pursue this line of thinking when they were in power? The Indian parliament should discuss the problem threadbare. It is not facing the fact in the valley. True, the very accession is being questioned. But the situation was worse when Sheikh Abdullah, the popular Kashmiri leader, joined India. He even organized the Kashmir militia to fight the Pakistani troops. If the Sheikh could influence the Kashmiri opinion at the time when
the question staring at him was either to join secular India or Islamic Pakistan, why the Mehbooba government, which has come through a free and fair electoral process, is not able to rally people around her? She is right when Nayar she says that only a few miscreants were creating trouble. But the others, the majority, is keeping quiet and posing the real problem. New Delhi has not realized, more so under the Narendra Modi government, that the Sheikh’s charter of autonomy has long been thrown out of the window. All the promises that were made to him before the accession have been violated in letter and spirit. It is New Delhi’s will that is prevailing, not that of the valley. New Delhi should have realized by this time that the closer Srinagar comes to India, the farther it goes away from the minds of the people. It is a make-believe situation but it matters since it gives a vicarious satisfaction to
the valley that it is free and separate. The Sheikh was able to keep this aspiration alive because he did not allow New Delhi to tinker with autonomy, beyond the subjects of Foreign Affairs, Defence and Communications. The Mehbooba government would have liked the same arrangement but it has to give leeway to New Delhi since Mehbooba is dependent on the BJP to stay in power. New Delhi could help her by allowing Mehbooba to act independent. But the BJP government, which is guided by the RSS, does not want to give the impression that Kashmir was in any way more independent than the other states in the country. The party is not mindful of the autonomous status of Kashmir because it is opposed to the entire philosophy of Nehru that some parts of the country can have their own constitution and the flag. That was the spirit which guided Kashmir to convene the constituent assembly and approve of what
the Sheikh had promised. The first thing the state constituent assembly did was to endorse accession and said that the alliance with India was final and cannot be challenged. This is only on paper because the reality in the valley has changed. The youth has gone a different way. By burning down schools the youth has, no doubt, expressed their anger. But must it visit on schools which are the places for lear ning? By reducing them to mere stones and ashes does not help. The idea of separatists may be to get the students back on the streets and resort to stone pelting. This is a sad scenario and seals the future of students. It is for them to realize that without education they will have no other go except what they are being goaded to do. India is a vast country which offers various opportunities. Education gives students the tool which they can use in the job market. Surely, stone-pelting cannot be a tool by any stretch of imagination.

A plea for irrelevant education
ue to the pressures of popular demand for relevance in education, we have lost sight of the purpose for which true education exists. I would like to make a plea for irrelevant education, one that does not begin with a presumption of what is relevant – the thing most needful, as Strauss would put it – and what is not. Genuine education does not prepare us merely to exercise what Kant calls “the private use of reason,” where one essentially has to resolve a problem that is already given and defined and, in so being, is simply a matter of applying the appropriate expertise. If this were the sole or true aim of education, then indeed one may be justified in demanding that education remain clearly relevant – that it be geared to and entirely focused on producing the adequate expertise, so that reason can be put to proper use. What may be overlooked here is what Kant calls “the public use of reason”: reason that does not simply solve the problems it is given, but asks further questions, such as how did this problem arise, how are we defining it, is our definition – our conceptualization of the problem – perhaps part of the problem itself. To prepare the mind to engage in the public use of reason, it is insufficient to fashion experts, i.e. technicians and specialists. Rather, the public use of reason requires that
we question radically the very frame of reference in which we are operating. An education that must constantly demonstrate its relevance, usefulness (or functionality) is an education that is fundamentally not free. Being unable to freely follow where thought leads us is, in a sense, no education at all. We are witnessing a tendency thoroughly consistent with the kind of American anti-intellectualism that has only become further emboldened and entrenched during this election year, courtesy of know-nothing Trumpism. For genuine social critique to be possible, education cannot be enslaved to a prescribed set of assumptions about what is important – what is significant or relevant, and what is not. Instead, the capacity for pure theory must be fostered. Theoretical speculation is, in itself, an activity and a potent one, that enables us to set aside our habitual frame of reference and radically reassess the coordinates of the psychosocial status quo. We should not feel guilty for championing pure theory – theory may be the thing we need most. Perhaps an education can only become significant when we are first prepared to bracket our assumptions about what an education should provide. The push to make higher education accountable to the practical needs of students is understandable,
and up to a point not reasonably debatable. But beyond a certain point, it is arguably harmful to students and their education. Indeed, it precisely robs them of education, which must always remain free and unfettered. The goal of all higher education is a liberal mind (and this, in contrast not to conservative, but to enslaved). And a liberal mind is not constantly bound to put its knowledge to “work” but is free to pursue and enjoy knowledge for its own sake. An education that is consumed with questions of practical applicability, with so-called “real world” significance, is certainly not a liberal education. A stunted education will likely produce a stunted mind, where instrumental rationality comes to eclipse the whole of reason: reason as a moral, critical, aesthetic, and speculative imperative. Of course, the movement to strictly make higher education relevant invariably puts philosophy on the defensive. For example, Stephen Hawking’s recent claim that “philosophy is dead” is a rather remarkable one. Let us consider it for a moment and take a dose of good old-fashioned British empiricism, in the light of which, Hawking’s claim is false. In fact, there are more philosophy departments, philosophy journals, and more people writing and doing philosophy than ever before. So, empirically,

am responding to the baseless allegations and threats published on 8th Nov by NSCN K. the allegations are made up by the concerned leader to cover up his own extortion activities by dragging the innocent national worker. The accusation with respect to the financial mismanagement during my tenure at NSCN K is being fabricated to overshadow current rampant corruption in the organization. Further the audit report for the financial year with detailed expenses and transactions was submitted to the concerned collective leadership before I left the organization in feb 2013. The collective leadership of NSCN K accepted the report without any complaints. 1. Mr. SS Khaplang ( President) 2. Mr. Kughalu Mulatonu ( Sr. Kilonser) 3. Gen Nikki Sumi ( Western Military supervisor ) 4. Camp Commander (Suruhoto Designated camp) In connection to the extortion allegations, I ask the concerned leader to list out the so called evidences pertaining to my involvement. It is clearly evident that the accusations are done purely on the leaders personal sentiments and the timing
of allegations indicates a smear campaign by the leader to cover up his own well publicized anti national activities. Accusing me of extortion with the close aide is illogical because Mr. Kughato Chishi of Phulesheto Village and Sgt. Vikuto Zhimo of Xuivi village joined GPRN NSCN in 2012 before I left NSCN(K). They defected back to NSCN(K) by end of 2013 and has been your close aide since then. Threatening the national workers with capital punishment and false accusations is setting a dangerous precedent in the community, which may lead to internal disturbance in the state of Nagaland. I do not pay heed to any of your personal threats and it is only advisable that you do not post any threats in the name of MIP/NSCN(K) and disrespect the organization. In connection to the Indian agencies, the statement made by the writer regarding my urge to join RAW and IB is preposterous. The thickheaded statement clearly indicates illogical accusations and shows his immaturity. “Knowledge is knowing tomato is a fruit, wisdom is not to put it in a fruit salad”. Hokato Vusshe, Kilonser law and Justice GPRN/NSCN
Hawking’s statement is absurd, but he is a very smart fellow and he must have known that; it thus must follow that he meant something else. Perhaps what he was saying is something like: “Philosophy ought to be dead.” But notice, this is a very different claim, for it is not descriptive like “philosophy is dead,” one which we can falsify by simply looking at the world and saying, “Oh, philosophy is not dead at all.” The claim “philosophy ought to be dead” is not empirical, but essentially normative. But here, already, Hawking has a difficulty. Is he making this claim within philosophy, or outside of it; are we to suppose it is a scientific claim? Obviously, it is not. So the claim must be a philosophical one: in fact there is no avoiding philosophy. The idea that all knowledge is scientific knowledge (scientism) is not itself a scientific claim, and it can never be. It is also a philosophical one of sorts: the claim that philosophy should die by suicide. And in a sense, is this not what we are witnessing in higher education – a kind of death by suicide? Education is suffocating itself with the oppressive and pervading insistence on relevance and applicability. A sure sign that the winds of change are blowing in the right direction would be if students began to demand more irrelevant education, an education which does not possess
utility, but which broadens the mind, instills the sense of education as a life-long pursuit, and produces the kind of independent thinking that makes possible the public use of reason. In the final analysis, it appears that for the sake of relevance itself, we must be ready to bracket the question of relevance altogether – to set it aside. Otherwise, we run the risk of being blind to the very thing that (in the end) we really needed most. That is my plea. It is not that relevance of education is unimportant or insignificant. My point is that the very question about what is truly relevant --what is the thing most needful -- is precisely what a liberal sets herself out to discover through education. And if we approach education as though we are already in possession of the answers, then genuine education has been arrested, even before it has begun. My appeal is for the protection and nourishment of the right to irrelevant education. Oscar Wilde once said: “All art is quite useless.” We might similarly say that true education is quite useless and, for that very reason, indispensable. Sir,
ACAUT’s feats impressive, but higher expectations lingers
The ACAUT’s recent accomplishments in the form of exposing the fuel adulteration racket and the detection and exposure of anomalies in the Food and Civil Supplies Department is quite marvelous and is being appreciated by one and all. ‘Hats off ’ to the daring and tireless efforts of all the wise individuals and groups under its banner. It is high time to rise above the dark clouds of corruption and social evils. It is time for change. But, does it end here ? Are these two sectors the only corrupted organs of our system ? The answer we all know is a clear ‘no’. This is just the tip of an iceberg. The pathetic road conditions, The most irregular power supply, poor medical facilities and tragic state of health centres, enormous bogus teachers appointments but lack of school teachers, huge deductions in contract bills, NPSC Scams, delay in salaries and students’ scholarships, clogged drainage systems, back door appointments etc. are just a few to name. As young and concerned citizens, we look up to the strong will and foresight of you leaders to salvage us from these multiple plague of our society. Do not stop your good work here, carry on with the noble cause to usher a new era of transparency and equality. Lastly but importantly, the ACAUT was initially formed with the prime objective of “ one government one tax” and to fight the menace of multiple taxation. The people were full of admiration at the bold and wise initiative of the concerned great minds. We were of full hopes that it would not only ease the heavy burden of multiple taxation but most importantly play an active role in unifying our divided brethren. Initially it was doing well off and it emerged as a pro-people mass based front runner organization. But sadly, it gradually seems to have lost its pace or deviated from its primary objective, which is quite disheartening. A corruption free system is a must for progress. But what good it will be for us when we achieve development but blood shed and disunity prevails. Can we really claim that we have progressed when our people and land is still in chaos. Therefore it is expected of all the civil societies , especially ACAUT to continue to strive to ‘ break ice’ in this sector. God Bless Nagaland! Therefore, it could be concluded as having made a pact to capture polling booths during the 2018 election in favour of candidates, ACAUT said. It said when Nagas were yearning for a clean government through clean electoral practices, the four VCs resorting to anti-Christian resolutions was a disappointment for every right-thinking citizen in Nagaland and shameful. Further, ACAUT asked all right thinking citizens to reject the declarations made by the VCs.

(From P-1) It said that lakhs of legal and illegal immigrants both were illegally enrolled in the state. To unearth this, ACAUT said, Nagaland Tribes Council had formed a Co-ordination Committee with technical inputs from the State Election Commission. Therefore, it asked DCC to congratulate the district administration and CEO, rather than being jabbed. It also asked DCC not to go against public opinion, when the citizens were voicing out for clean e-roll for a clean election. “Political rivalry is healthy and part of the democratic process but it should not be at the cost of our people”, ACAUT said. Further, ACAUT appealed ECI to carry out intensive E-roll revision to delete the four lakhs bogus voters in the State E-roll, which has not been done since 2003. ACAUT condemns ‘unprinciple’ action of VCs AC AU T a l s o c o n demned the “unprincipled” action of four village councils (VCs)- Chapka, Yaongyimty Old, Yaongyimty New and Phansang under 24 Angetyongpang A/C, in declaring their support to parliamentary secretary of animal husbandry and veterinary services, S. Chuba Longkumer, and the declaration by Kelingmen village to support minister of National Highways Nuklutoshi, in the forthcoming 2018 elections. Since, such declarations was crime and was against clean election campaign of NBCC and the principle of “one man one vote”, ACAUT vowed to explore all legal op-
and energy resources in the Naga Hills and its adjoining regions. Prof. Rao said that senior geoscientists who worked in the region and elsewhere in similar setting have been invited for delivering keynote talks in various aspects of geological sciences, which would provide an inspiration to the younger generation to further the exploration of the range. He opined that the outcome of the discussion in the seminar would serve as guidance to explore and exploitations of energy and mineral resources of the state and initiate collaborations into new projects with different organizations. Nagaland University, head of geology department, Prof. G. T. Thong, highlighted a brief profile of the department, saying it was established under NEHU in September 1983 and was taken over by the Nagaland University in 1994. He informed that the department was granted the DST-FIST
dress highlighted about the four Nagaland University Campuses located at Lumami; Meriema, Kohima and Medziphema. She said the science of geology is the bedrock of all societies and civilizations but unfortunately it has not been given its due place in the academic field in Nagaland. Buno opined that this Seminar would highlight the scope of geology more comprehensively and explore widely in the context of the ‘Act East Policy’ of the Central Government of India. India Society of Applied Geochemists (ISAG) president, Dr. K. K. Dwivedy, in his address gave a profile of ISAG and its history and said that this seminar has to find solutions for the problems faces by the geoscientists. With regard to uranium, he said that Nagaland state has been endowed with deposit of coal, oil and gas for which the department of geology, Government of Nagaland has been working. He hoped that Nagaland University particularly the geochemistry would take hints from the talks during the sessions and carry out to find suitable solutions. At the seminar, the students of geology department NU presented special song. Vote of thanks was proposed by organising secretary Dr. S. K. Srivastava. More than 70 delegates from different parts of the country attended the national seminar on the first day.

KOHIMA, NOV 9 (NPN): Nagaland governor and chief rector, Nagaland University, PB Acharya, on Wednesday urged the scholars and researchers not to limit their knowledge for academic purpose alone but to utilize the applicable knowledge for the benefit of the society. Acharya was speaking as the chief guest during the inaugural session of the three-day national seminar on geology, geochemistry, tectonics, energy and mineral resources of North East India and AGM of Indian society of applied geochemists, at NIELIT Meriama here on Wednesday. The seminar is being organized by department of geology, Nagaland University, Kohima campus Meriema. Challenging the scholars attending the seminar, he said knowledge should be empowered and convert it into action to create wealth
and development of the society. Governor reminded the gathering that the need of the hour is to teach the required knowledge to the university students, which would contribute to the humanity. On the occasion, the governor also released a book on “Recent Trends in Earth Science Research with Special Reference to NE India”. Delivering the welcome address by the seminar convenor, Prof. B. V. Rao said Northeast India was one of the few places where it was possible to analyse both short and long term events of the earth’s history, which has not only shaped some of the major features of the earth but also has provided enough natural resources for the civilization. He said the seminar was aimed at providing an opportunity for geoscientists to interact and have fruitful discussion about the recent advances made in the fields of geological, mineral

Singapore, Nov 9 (AFP): Oil prices fell in Asia today as Republican candidate Donald Trump defeated Democratic rival and market favourite Hillary Clinton in the race for the White House. Global financial markets and oil prices went into a tailspin following the billionaire populist’s shock election win but losses narrowed after the president-elect’s conciliatory victory speech. At around 0830 GMT, the December contract for US benchmark West Texas Intermediate was down 53 cents at USD 44.45 a barrel and Brent crude for January delivery was 51 cents lower at USD 45.53. Both contracts fell more than one dollar earlier in the session after Trump cemented his lead over Clinton. “ Tr u m p ’s v i c t o r y speech was conciliatory,” Jeffrey Halley, a senior market analyst at OANDA, told AFP. “The market liked what he had to say about fiscal spending to rebuild America’s infrastructure.” But Halley noted that “the world is still in shock” over Trump’s win and would need more time to digest the potential implications.

MANILA/BENGALURU, NOV 9 (Agencies): Gold jumped nearly 4 percent on Wednesday to its strongest in more than five weeks as investors sought safe havens with Republican Donald Trump leading Democrat Hillary Clinton in the race for the White House. It marked gold’s biggest single-day gain since June when it rose as much as 8 percent when Britain decided to leave the European Union. Trump won the key battleground state of Ohio and led Clinton in a series of other states that were too close to call, including Florida and North Carolina.

Cash for lending will also increase. Mid-term both direct and indirect taxes will go up,” he said. “Official size of the economy will increase dismissing fears of cash crunch. Instead of spending cash, you can spend through bank account, cheque, or electronic means... For smooth replacement, cash for cash will be rationed because if you allow an indefinite amount, there could be a run-on the banks. According to a source, the entire replacement currency will be there over the next 3-4 weeks. On the rationale of introducing new Rs 2,000 notes, the source said since 86 per cent of the high-value currency was lying idle, there was a need to replace the old with the new.

D I M A P U R , N OV 9 (NPN): A day after the centre government announced demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, the NF railway has adopted new procedures for those passengers claiming cash refund. According to NF railway chief public relations officer Pranav Jyoti Sharma, the railway stations will be not in a position to refund as the stations were not well equipped with money from RBI/banks to be disbursed as per the new mandate. However, passengers claiming refund would be provided a deposit slip (s) at the station and the slip could be used to claim the

Besides the government’s decision to demonetise Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 currency notes in its fight against the black money menace, the victory of Republican candidate Donald Trump in the intensely fought US Presidential polls had a bearing on investor sentiment. Cipla, Hindustan Unilever and Wipro also fell. Among others, six Sensex stocks -- Dr Reddy’s, Sun Pharma, SBI, Power Grid, GAIL and Lupin -- closed in the green with substantial gains. New Delhi, Nov 9 (PTI): Housewives, farmers and those whose annual income is within the tax exemption limit may not be hounded by tax authorities for depositing up to Rs 2.5 lakh of the now-defunct higher denomination currency notes in bank accounts, a top government official said today. After withdrawing Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes from circulation, the government allowed individuals to deposit the same in their bank accounts till December 30 and get smaller denomination ones or new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 bank notes. These deposits, however, will be scrutinised to catch tax evaders and black money holders. But those falling within the income tax exemption bracket Rs 2.5 lakh need not worry regarding their cash deposits in banks except for suspicious cases, the official said. In a surprise move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi last night announced demonetisation of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes with effect from today to fight the menace of black money, fake currency, corruption and terror financing. “Housewives can deposit up to Rs 2.5 lakh and pay no tax. Mumbai, Nov 9 (PTI): A double-whammy hit the stock market hard today with the invested wealth taking a knock of nearly Rs 2 lakh crore on adverse global cues from Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential polls and demonetization of highvalue currency notes back home. Rupee, however, recouped all its morning losses to close at two-month high of 66.43 against the US dollar. Gold appeared to be a gainer as an investment option with sovereign gold bonds and gold-linked Exchange Traded Funds gaining ground as key non-cash instruments. The stock losses could have been much higher but for hectic buying at lower levels in afternoon trade, after the initial doubleshock saw the benchmark Sensex plunging by a huge 1,689-points within seconds into the opening trade -- initially causing a notional loss of nearly Rs 6 lakh crore from total value of all listed stocks. The Sensex finally closed 338.61 points lower at 27,252.53 points after recovering more than threefourth of its early morning losses. Sensex opened sharp-

New approach towards water at UN crucial talks
Water has been considered as a main climate change challenge for the first time at the UN talks.
Italian court rules on naming child Rome, NOV 9 (Agencies): Italy’s constitutional court has ruled against legislation that automatically gives children of married couples the father’s surname. Lawyers argued that preventing families from giving children their mother’s surname discriminated against women. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) had earlier condemned the legislation - which dates from Roman times - and ordered Italy to change it. Campaigners hailed Tuesday’s ruling and called for parliament to endorse it. “The court has declared the unlawfulness of rules providing for the automatic attribution of the paternal surname to legitimate children, when the parents wish otherwise,” the constitutional court said in a statement.
Fauchon noted that adapting the water sector to climate change requires a three-pronged approach smartly combining finance, governance and knowledge and recommended the inclusion in the “Blue Book on Water and Climate” of the solutions that will be developed in COP22. Speaking on the occasion, Morocco’s Minister Delegate in Charge of Water Charafat Afilal said climate change takes a toll on the water cycle impacting the ecosystems of societies and hindering the achievement of sustainable development goals in Africa. She highlighted Morocco’s international advocacy for global action to counter the devastating impacts of climate change on the water sector, saying that the momentum witnessed in terms of en-
hancing water resilience has been strengthened at COP21. The side event was also an occasion for the ministers in charge of water of Burkina Faso and Chad to shed light on the challenges facing their respective countries in fighting climate change effects on water. Chad’s Minister Sidick Abdelkerim Haggar deplored that Lake Chad was shrinking at a dramatic rate as a result of severe droughts causing rural flight and threatening the lives of about 30 million people who depend on its water. Other participants drew a link between water scarcity inflicted by climate change and geopolitical conflicts resulting from the disagreements over managing water scarcity in some shared rivers.
Lo n d o n, N ov 9 (IANS): Extending the number of pregnant women given a common drug to boost thyroid hormone levels may lead to a reduced number of still-births, early caesarean sections and low-weight babies, says a new study. “Our work raises the possibility of providing real benefits from using a safe, cheap and well established treatment by simply extending it to the number of pregnant women we treat,” said lead author of the study Peter Taylor from University of Cardiff in Britain. The thyroid gland is an organ found in the base of the neck. It produces essential hormones that control the body’s metabolism -- the way we use energy. Thyroid hormones are also critical for foetal brain development, but babies cannot make any of their own until the second trimester and have to

source all of it from their mothers. Pregnant women with mild hypothyroidism have low levels of thyroid hormones. This can be treated with a hormone replacement drug called levothyroxine. In this study, the researchers investigated whether pregnant women with mild hypothyroidism and their babies would also benefit from levothyroxine treatment. They combined data from a thyroid screening study and linked it to routinely collected clinical data to study the effect of correcting borderline thyroid function on obstetric outcomes. The researchers analysed over 13,000 women who were 12-16 weeks pregnant, 518 of whom had mild hypothyroidism. Of these, 263 women received levothyroxine and the rest received no treatment.
Over 115 mn people posted on Facebook on US election day
New York, Nov 9 (IANS): Even as Donald Trump stunned the world by winning the US Presidential election, millions of people on Facebook posted their reactions in the form of Likes, comments and videos globally. According to Facebook, 115.3 million people on Facebook worldwide generated 716.3 million likes, posts, comments and shares related on November 8. There were 643 million views of election-related videos on the social networking platform. At his victory rally, Trump called for national reconciliation, saying: “It is time for us to come together as one united people.” He offered his “pledge to every citizen of the country” to work for them and said he would seek from those who were critical of him their “guidance and help so we can unify our country”.

N e w Yo r k , N ov 9 (PTI): Indian-American Kamala Harris today scripted history when she emerged victorious in the key election for the US Senate seat from California, becoming the first black and Asian Senator from the state. Harris, 52, California’s Attorney General, is the first Indian-American to achieve the feat. She defeated fellow Democrat Loretta Sanchez. Harris is also the sixth black individual to be elected to the US Senate. US President Barack Obama was the fifth black elected Senator. She is the first black woman elected to the upper chamber in more than two decades, becoming the first Indian-American to achieve the feat. Harris has become only the second black woman in the nation’s history to serve in the US Senate. California had never before elected a black or Latino politician to the US Senate. By electing her, voters tore down a colour barrier that has stood for as long as California statehood. Media reports showed Harris, a two-term attorney general, was winning by more than 1.3 million votes early today. “Kamala will take the oath of office as California’s next Senator on January 3, 2017,” said the office of the Senate elect. Raqqa, NOV 9 (Agencies): A US-led coalition air strike killed at least 16 civilians in a village north of so-called Islamic State’s Syrian stronghold of Raqqa, activists say. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that six women and a child were among those who died in the raids on al-Heisha overnight. The IS-held village has been the target of a USbacked alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters seeking to capture Raqqa. The coalition said it was checking on the reports of the incident. A spokeswoman for the Kurdish-Arab alliance, the Syria Democratic Forces (SDF), dismissed them. “There is no such thing, and any such claims are IS news,” Jihan Sheikh Ahmed told the AFP news agency. On Sunday, the SDF announced that it had begun a campaign to isolate and ultimately take control of Raqqa, which IS has controlled for almost three years. The initial report of the air strike on al-Heisha, about 40km (25 miles) north of Raqqa, came from the anti-IS activist group, Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently. It said 23 people had been killed and identified all but four of them.

Carolina Marin costliest at KCYC lifts 22nd Tokhu Emong trophy Dimapur badminton league auction
Carolina Marin
NEW DELHI, NOV 9 (IANS): Rio Olympic champion Carolina Marin of Spain was bagged by Hyderabad Hunters for Rs.61.5 lakh, becoming the costliest buy in the Premier Badminton League (PBL) auction for players held here on Wednesday. Meanwhile, India’s Rio Olympic silver medallist P.V. Sindhu went to Chennai Smashers for Rs.39 lakh -- way below expectations. Her illustrious compatriot, Saina Nehwal, who is yet to make a comeback after her knee surgery held just after the Rio Games in August, went to Awadhe Warriors
for Rs.33 lakh. The second highest bid went for South Korean woman shuttler Sung Ji Hyun, with Mumbai Rockets paying Rs.60 lakh for her. Denmark’s world No.6 shuttler Jan ‘O’ Jorgensen proved to be the third costliest after he was bought for Rs.59 lakh in the auction held here at a city hotel. The Dane went to Delhi Acers. Kidambi Srikanth was one of the biggest gainers from the auction and went for a cool Rs 51 lakh to Awadhe for the league that will be played from January 1-14, 2017 in a round robin format, with each
team clashing with the other once. Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen too got a price of Rs.39 lakh landing up with Bengaluru Blasters, as did Wan Ho Son who was clinched by Delhi. None of the men’s singles badminton “Big Three” players -- Chinese duo of Chen Long and Lin Dan and Malaysian superstar Lee Chong Wei -- will play in the PBL. As anticipated, twotime reigning world champion Carolina was the biggest draw in the morning, with Hyderabad Hunters and Delhi Acers engaged in a fierce bidding battle. Eventually, she was bagged by the Hunters who bid Rs 61.5 lakh, spending onethird of their maximum permitted kitty on just one player. Mumbai Rockets too decided to put most of their eggs in one basket, agreeing to pay Rs 60 lakh for Ji Hyun. But the surprise was in store for Sindhu -- with the country still celebrating her runner-up finish at Rio. She was expected to get a huge bid. But her name came in the latter part of the draw among the list of 15 ‘Icon Players’ and most of the franchises had already spent their money on buying their aces.

SC removes cloud of uncertainty over Ind-Eng test
NEW DELHI, NOV 9 (PTI): Supreme Court today removed the hurdles created by state cricket associations on the holding of the IndiaEngland test series by allowing BCCI to incur the expense of Rs 58.66 lakh for the first match starting today, warning that no part of fund will go to the host Saurashtra Cricket Association. The apex court also gave more teeth to the committee headed by former Chief Justice of India Justice R M Lodha for monitoring the working of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) by allowing it to vet hundreds of contracts with vendors for holding of domestic, international and IPL matches in 2017. It said the arrangement for the first match would continue for the subsequent test matches till December 3, when it will hear the matter already scheduled. A bench headed by Chief Justice T S Thakur also took strong exception to the language used against the Lodha panel by BCCI top brass, including its Sec-
retary Ajay Shirke in his communication with the panel. Lodha Committee Secretary Gopal Shankar Narayan, an advocate, complained that the use of words and the statements issued by them was akin to “constant insult” heaped on the panel comprising the former CJI and two retired judges of the apex court. The bench, also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, drew the attention of senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the BCCI, to certain sentences from the Board’s secretary’s letter, saying “see the kind of language used by Shirke.” The apex court took note of the submissions made by senior advocate Gopal Subramanium, who is assisting the court as amicus curiae in the matter, that BCCI has failed to comply with the directions of the top court, which was clear from the second report of the Lodha Committee placed before the bench today.

ures of 2/108 while Jadeja notched up 1/59. Yadav toiled hard for 18.5 overs for figures of 1/68. Electing to bat on winning the toss, England were off to a steady start with the opening duo of captain Alistair Cook and debutant Haseeb Hameed batting cautiously. Cook was lucky to survive in the first over when he edged a Mohammed Shami delivery into the slips only to see Ajinkya Rahane drop a relatively easy chance. Jadeja struck the first blow for India, trapping Cook lbw with a delivery that turned into the England skipper’s pads after pitching. Cook attempted a flick but could not make contact as Jadeja appealed successfully for the decision. The 19-yearold Hameed, the youngest opener to debut for England, hit six boundaries during his 82-ball 31 before being trapped leg before after misjudging the turn of an Ashwin delivery. Duckett was also undone by Ashwin’s guile as he edged one to the slips and Rahane made no mistake this time round. That was the last bit of success the Indians would be able to celebrate for quite some time as Root and Ali proceeded to try
and bring the England innings back on track. The duo ensured that the visitors lost no wickets in the post-lunch session and reached a respectable position by the tea break. Root hit 11 boundaries and a six during his 180ball innings while Ali had nine hits to the fence. By the Root pushed an attempted drive into Yadav’s hands in the post tea session, England were in a relatively comfortable position at 281/4. Stokes then joined Ali in the middle and proceeded to play a patient 41-ball knock even as the latter edged towards his century. IPL 10 from April 5; Shukla NEW DELHI, NOV 9 (PTI): The 10th edition of Indian Premier League may begin from April 5 next year, less than a week after the Test series against Australia ends on March 29, while the players’ auction will be held in Bengaluru on February 4. IPL Governing Council chairman Rajeev Shukla announced this following a meeting on Tuesday, adding that no decision was taken in violation of the Supreme Court-appointed Justice Lodha Committee directives. One of Lodha Panel’s directives to the BCCI was to keep a 15-day gap between the IPL and an international series. “There is a proposal to start IPL 10 from April 5. The auctions will happen in Bengaluru on February 4. We had to keep a gap of one week after the Australia series,” Shukla told reporters after the Governing Council meeting called to discuss operational issues pertaining to the cash-rich league. “All operational details have been discussed,” Shukla said. Innovative steps will be taken to ensure that centres in Maharashtra such as Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur are able to hold matches in the 10th edition of the tournament that started in 2008 amid much fanfare. IPL matches scheduled in Maharashtra had to be shifted out last year after outrage over use of water to maintain stadiums even as the state reeled under severe drought.
RAJKOT, NOV 9 (IANS): Excellent batting by Joe Root and Moen Ali helped England stage a strong recovery in their first innings on the opening day of the first cricket Test against India here on Wednesday. Coming together after England lost three wickets in the first session of the day, Root and Ali added 107 runs between them to help the visitors to a score of 311/4 at stumps. Root scored 124 before
being caught and bowled by pacer Umesh Yadav. Ali was on the cusp of a well deserved century as he was unbeaten on 99 at the close of the day’s play. Ben Stokes, who was batting on 19, was giving Ali company at stumps. For India, star offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja struck early blows as England struggled in the first session of the day. Ashwin returned fig-

ISL: Delhi FC edges past Chennaiyan
Players in action during the Delhi Vs Chennaiyin FC.
NEW DELHI, NOV 9 (AGENCIES): Chennaiyin FC were devoured whole by Delhi Dynamos as Gianluca Zambrotta’s side notched up a 4-1 win to go top of the Indian Super League (ISL) table on Wednesday. Goals from Richard Gadze, Florent Malouda and Kean Lewis were enough as Bernard Mendy’s goal ended up remaining as a consolation. While the defending champions, helmed by Marco Materazzi, would have come to the capital resolute to avoid a repeat of their 3-1 loss earlier this season, what ended up happening was even worse as Florent Malouda ran rampant at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. On the back of a comfortable win against Kerala Blastes, Delhi Dynamos
named an unchanged starting lineup with the onus on the in-form duo of Marcelinho and Kean Lewis to provide inroads. There were five changes for Chennaiyin from their draw against Mumbai City FC. Karanjit Singh, Hans Mulder, Davide Succi, Dudu Omagbemi and Baljit Sahni were drafted into the eleven. Delhi had a setback in the third minute as Konsham Singh sustained an injury to his ankle and had to be stretchered off. He was replaced by Lalchawnkima immediately. The game had a cagey look to it up until the fourteenth minute when Raphael Augusto took a stinging shot from around 30 yards after skipping past several Delhi
shirts. However it straight down Toni Doblas’ throat who collected it graciously. Delhi took an early lead as in the next minute Florent Malouda pounced on a mistake by the Chennai defence. He then charged towards goal and unleashed a fierce low shot saved by Karanjit but the wily Richard Gadze was on hand to slot in the rebound. Jeje missed a golden opportunity in the 69th minute as skied a shot with the goal at his mercy. Despite what the scoreline suggested, Chennai had their own periods of dominance and were still pretty much in the game. There was a tame penalty shout by Delhi as MArcelinho looked to have been brought down in the box, the referee was not interested as replays showed that the Brazilian tripped on his own momentum. Delhi sat deep and absorbed pressure and looked to break on the counter with the ever threatening Marcelinho and Lewis and Marcelinho was played on through a long ball from the defence but the ball had too much on it as 75 minutes of play concluded.

M oscow, N ov 9 (IANS): The person who takes the helm at the AllRussia Athletics Federation (ARAF) after the elections scheduled for December should fully focus on this work rather than combine it with other responsibilities, renowned Russian pole vaulter and candidate for the ARAF presidency Yelena Isinbayeva has said. The Athletics Federation of the Stavropol region on Tuesday decided to nominate Sports Minister of the Samara region Dmitry Shlyakhtin as candidate for the position of ARAF’s president. As reported earlier, Yelena Isinbayeva and high jumper Andrei Silnov were also nominated, reports Tass. “Basically, it doesn’t matter who becomes the ARAF president as long as the vision, the strategy and
the goals are the same,” Isinbayeva stressed. The two-time Olympic champion believes that the ARAF should be the new president’s main occupation. “This person should devote all his free time to improving the situation in the federation and be keenly interested in solving the problems so that our athletes get an opportunity to take part in international competitions,” Isinbayeva noted. “So whoever takes over the federation, be me it or Dmitry Anatolyevich or someone else, the work in the ARAF should be a priority. As you may know, our federation is large, we are facing many problems, so low-performance is not an option,” she added. The elections of the ARAF president are scheduled for December 9.
