7.8 magnitude earthquake hits Manipur govt. seeks New Zealand; triggers Tsunami

Manipur economic blockade enters 13th day

KO L K ATA , N OV 1 3 (AGENCIES): A day after she expressed willingness to work with arch rival CPI (M) on the Centre’s demonetisation of high-value currency notes, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday called her arch rival, the left party’s general secretary, Sitaram Yechury, urging him to wage a “united fight” against the BJP and its “anti-people policies”. A senior CPI (M) leader, however, gave her a rebuff, describing the call as a “desperate call” to save her own party leaders who were allegedly involved in corruption. Earlier, Banerjee said she was ready to work with the CPI (M) and other opposition parties such as the SP, BSP, and Congress, despite ideological differences, to “save the country” from the NDA government. “Yes, today Mamata Banerjee called Sitaram Yechury and told him that all the opposition parties should come together to put up a united fight against the BJP. Yechury replied that since he was travelling, he

could only comment on the matter after discussing it in the party,” CPI (M) politburo member Mohammed Salim told reporters. He described Banerjee’s phone call as a “desperate call” to save her own party leaders who were involved in “corruption”. “This is a desperate call and an attempt to save her own party leaders who are allegedly involved in the Saradha and Narada scams. What is the credibility of the Trinamool Congress (TMC)? How can they talk about fighting against black money when her (Mamata’s) own party leaders are involved in the Saradha scam and have been arrested,” Salim said. “When her own party leaders have been involved in Narada, this is nothing but a political gimmick. Those running their party in West Bengal through corruption should not talk much about black money,” he added. Salim alleged that a “political match-fixing” was going on between the TMC and the BJP and that was why the CBI probe into the Saradha scam had

‘More projects’ to fight graft: PM

VCs support to candidates unlawful, says LKMCECC

PANAJI, NOV 13 (AGENCIES): After demonetising high value notes to curb black money, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said he has “more projects” in mind to rid the country of corruption and was ready to face the consequences as forces are “up against me” with their 70 years of loot being in trouble. “This is not an end. I have more projects in mind to make India corruptionfree. .... Cooperate with me and help me for 50 days and I will give you the India you desired,” Modi said at a function in Goa. “We will take action against ‘benami’ property; This is major step to eradicate corruption and black money ... If any money that was looted in India and has left Indian shores, it is our duty to find out about it,” he said. “I know that (some) forces are up against me, they may not let me live, they may ruin me because their loot of 70 years is in trouble, but I am prepared,” Modi said in a speech which saw him getting emotional a few times. He said the people voted against corruption in 2014. “I am doing what I was asked to do by the people of this country and it had become clear from the very first meeting of my Cabinet when I formed the SIT (on black money)...”

D I M A P U R , N OV 1 3 (NPN): Langpangkong Students’ Conference Clean Election Campaign Committee (LKMCECC) has joined ACAUT in condemning the “unlawful” public declaration of the five village councils- Kelingmen, Yaongyimti (old), Yaongyimti (New), Phangsang and Chakpa- to support certain candidates in the forthcoming 2018 assembly polls. LKMCECC in a press note said, the public declaration has directly challenged “adult suffrage”- a right to vote given to every citizen by the constitution of India. In this regard, LKMCECC said it has decided to take up the matter with the Election Commission of India (ECI) with certain practical proposals for necessary action to ensure free and fair election. The committee alleged that the VCs have “simply and thoughtlessly” breached

“gone slow” over the last one-and-a-half years. “They should first come clean on the Saradha scam and then talk about black money,” the CPI (M) leader said. Opposition to raise issue in parliament: Leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday said Congress MPs would raise the demonetization issue under rules 56 and 193 during the Winter Session beginning November 16. Rule 56 is related to motion for an adjournment of business of the House for the purpose of discussing a definite matter of urgent public importance, which may be made with the consent of the Speaker; whereas rule 193 lays down how a member will submit in writing his request for a discussion on a matter or urgent public importance. Deputy leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad has already given notice for the suspension of business under rule 267 of the Rajya Sabha for a discussion on the same issue.

the “Pledge signed in the name of God” on September 3 at Chuchuyimlang village, where all 33 villages and town units under Langpangkong range in Mokokchung district took the pledge for clean election in their respective villages and town units. Taking the issue as an eye-opener and reminder, it urged the range people to be more determined and committed towards cleansing the mess of election from Langpangkong range in particular. The committee also said the public declaration was unfortunate and embarrassment, when the people of Langpangkong range under the banner of LKMCECC were making all efforts to cleanse the corrupt and unlawful system of electioneering from the range. It therefore, appealed the people of Langpangkong range to uphold the September 3 pledge in letter and spirit.

IMPHAL, NOV 13: With no options left, the Manipur government was compelled to reach out to Centre’s Interlocutor for Naga talks, R.N. Ravi seeking his intervention to put an end to the economic blockade, which entered its 13th day Sunday, spearheaded by the United Naga Council (UNC). State transport minister Dr Kh Ratan Sunday said the government was in constant touch with the Interlocutor, R.N. Ravi to convince the agitating UNC to call off their agitation. “State government held talks with RN Ravi to intervene”, Ratan said on the sidelines of a function to re-launch the Inter-state Bus Terminus at Dingku road Imphal. As the state has been crippled by the blockade, Ratan said the state government was doing its best to solve the problem, particularly with regard to supply of essential commodities and fuel. UNC launched the blockade on November 1 in protest against Manipur government’s proposed move to

Uniform Civil Code: Law Commission open to suggestions from tribals NEW DELHI, NOV 13 (AGENCIES): With a section of the tribal population up in arms against the government’s move seeking opinion of the Law Commission on possibility of having the Uniform Civil Code, the panel said it was “open” to objections and suggestions from the community. “The tribal community should make representation before the Commission. We would also like to know their stand,” Law Commission chairman B.S. Chauhan told PTI. He said the Commission considers tribals as a stakeholder in the entire exercise in which representations are coming from various communities. “The tribals can also participate and debate in

the entire exercise,” the former apex court judge said. The opposition from a section of the tribal community assumed importance as a group has also moved the Supreme Court contending that the government was making an attempt to impose the UCC which will be against their ethos, customs and religious practices. The Rashtriya Adivasi Ekta Parishad, a group that claims to work for protecting Adivasi interests, has filed a petition in the apex court seeking protection of their customs and religious practices, including their right to practice polygamy and polyandry. Further, it has contended that any attempt to impose the Uniform Civil Code would have adversely impact on their distinct cus-

toms, culture and heritage. The petition in the apex court claimed the Adivasis (tribals) had their own personal laws and do not come in the category of Hindus as they worshipped nature instead of idols and performed burial of the dead. The marriage ceremonies of tribals are also different from that of Hindus, it submitted. “In case of Uniform Civil Code, the Adivasis’ right to perform marriage, worship, last rites and other ceremonies would be abrogated,” the NGO said. The petition is likely to come for hearing when the apex court will take up a batch of matters relating to the validity of triple talaq and polygamy in the Muslim community.

declare Sadar hills and Jiribam as full-fledged district. The blockade coupled with Centre’s demonetisation process has adversely affected the people, with the situation boiling down to a famine like situation. What was more shocking is that the most of the fuel outlets, taking the advantage of the shortage, have begun to sell petrol at Rs. 300 per litre. On the other hand, All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) came out against the UNC sponsored blockade saying that an agitation which adversely affects over 40 communities in pursuit of a demand from the government was nothing less than a “crime against humanity”. In a statement, AMUCO said the blockade and the counter blockade were both imposed along communal line and these measures were poisonous. Urging UNC to lift the blockade, taking into consideration the plight of the common people, AMUCO said it also does not endorse the counter-blockade which has been imposed by some organisations. WELLINGTON, NOV 13 (AGENCIES): An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck central New Zealand just after midnight, the U.S. Geological Survey said, generating a tsunami that hit the northeast coast of the South Island. New Zealand’s Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management warned of the risk of destructive waves along the country’s entire east coast and urged residents in lowlying areas to evacuate and seek higher ground. The quake struck 57 miles north-northeast of the city just after midnight local time on Monday and shook much of the country. Two deaths have been confirmed - one in Kaikoura and one in Mt Lyford - following the earthquake, the New Zealand Herald reports. Earlier, officials said they were searching for one person who was missing after a home for the elderly collapsed in Kaikoura, the locality which was hit hard by the disaster. There are

fears the toll could go even higher as officials assess the aftermath in daylight. People who live along the east coast were told to retreat to higher ground as the tsunami warning was issued, but it was later downgraded for most of the country. Waves as high as 10ft are still possible between Marlborough and Banks Peninsula. However, the national civil defence organisation, which is in charge of New Zealand’s emergency management, earlier said that a tsunami was possible. “The first wave activity may not be the most significant,” it said in a bulletin, adding tsunami activity would continue for several hours. The main tremor was followed by a series of strong aftershocks and there were reports of damaged buildings in the small rural township of Cheviot near the epicentre. Anna Kaiser, a seismologist at GNS Science said a tidal signal or surge of up to one metre (3 feet) had been recorded in North

Canterbury region of the South Island. “That’s reasonably significant so people should take this seriously,” she told Radio New Zealand. Chris Hill, a fire officer in Cheviot, a coastal town near the quake’s epicentre, said officials had gone door to door evacuating residents. “Everyone seems OK here,” he told RNZ. “There’s a lot of debris in houses, but at this stage it doesn’t look like anything too bad has happened.” RNZ said the Wellington City Council had received multiple reports of significant damage. The ambulance service said it did not receive any reports of quake-related injuries. In a brief message the Prime Minister John Key tweeted, “I hope everyone is safe after the earthquake tonight.” New Zealand is on the boundary of the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates, which form part of the socalled “Ring of Fire”, and experiences up to 15,000 tremors a year.
