Dr. Jamir reminds Church of its transformational role

This is it!

“Only on Sunday you talk about COVID-19 SOP and remember you’re over 60.” K Y M C

DIMAPUR, OCT 31 (NPN): Veteran Naga politician and former chief minister and governor Dr. S.C. Jamir has reminded the body of Christthe church- about their role in the bringing about transformation to Naga society amidst the present day state of affairs where social evils dominate and where lawlessness abound. In an article, Dr. Jamir said these painted a grim scenario that made Nagaland appear like a ship without a rudder. Against evidence of systematic collapse of all systems in Nagaland, Dr. Jamir asked “should we, the church, remain silent and allow the already volatile situation to degenerate more? Or remain just silent spectators only?” He reminded that decades ago, spiritual leaders of the church had given a clarion call for “Nagaland for Christ” as over 95% of people are Christians. However, Dr.

that the state has been witnessing surge in COVID cases in close contact settings like household, offices, restaurants, prison, church, old age home etc. with household (28%) and offices (23%) being the most common places.

D I MA P U R , O C T 3 1 (NPN): State Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) department, in its weekly report on COVID-19 released on Saturday, once again expressed serious concern that the State was noticing an alarming situation where positive cases are “not naming contacts to the contact tracing teams due to pressure from peers.” While pointing out that contact tracing is a very effective time-tested method to break the transmission of any infectious disease, the department warned that it is a punishable offence under the Epidemic Disease Act if one does not name contacts or come for testing, as they will be directly held responsible for spreading the disease.

D I MA P U R , O C T 3 1 (NPN): In the interest of public safety and to minimize non-essential movement of vehicles in Kohima Municipal areas, deputy commissioner Kohima, Mohammed Ali Shihab informed that the oddeven system of vehicular movement-- private, public transport (taxis and city buses) will continue till November 30 under Kohima Municipal areas, except on Sundays. Odd number day: Vehicle numbers ending with 1, 3, 5, 7 & 9 are allowed to ply on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Even number day: Vehicle numbers ending with 2, 4, 6, 8 & 0 are allowed to ply on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Exempted categories: Press, two-wheelers (without pillion rider), vehicles carrying emergency medical equipments, essential commodities, LPG cylinders and Oil tankers, DC stated in an order. Inter-State trucks carrying essential commodities bound for the state of Manipur. Meanwhile, DC said that all permits/exemptions issued prior to the issue of this order shall stand cancelled with immediate effect.

partment said. The report also stated that percentage of traced contacts among confirmed cases increased from 7% in July to 57% as of October 2020. With October month having reported the maximum number of cases and deaths till date, the department said that Nagaland’s sample positivity rate (9.15%) also continued to remain higher than the national average (7.48%). H&FW said that ICU admissions had also increased five times during the month of October while 15 out of 33 deaths were reported in October alone ( 73% deaths from Dimapur). 60% of all deaths were below 60 years of age with hypertension and diabetes being the most common

associated comorbidities. This is alarming due to the high prevalence of noncommunicable diseases (hypertension, diabetes, heart diseases) in the state, the department stated. The Health department expressed concern

Jamir asked what does Christianity tell us and what are its ideals and principles? Mentioning a chapter in the book of Ecclesiastes, Dr.Jamir said there is a season and time for everything under heaven. He asked was it now not a time to build up? Dr. Jamir said as a “Christian state” to demonstrate in reality, the proclamation of “Nagaland for Christ, ” was it not time to dethrone hatred and coronate love; to destroy hypocrisy and coronate truthfulness; to dethrone violence and coronate love; to dethrone ill-will towards others and coronate compassion in our hearts? Quoting Isaiah 60:1-3, Dr. Jamir went on to remind the church “ Arise, shine, for your light has come and the glory of the Lord is risen upon you” and fervently hoping that “Nagaland will come to God’s light” adding perhaps the time is today. Our brave soldiers are fully equipped and prepared to give a befitting reply to those who put their evil eyes on us. nin aerosol has been reported to be tolerated extremely well in influenza patients. Hence, it may have a particular potential to prevent severe Covid-19 disease when applied early after diagnosis,” said study author Martin Michaelis from the University of Kent in the UK. “Aprotinin has previously been shown to inhibit TMPRSS2 gene and has been suggested as a treatment option for influenza viruses and coronaviruses. Herein, we investigated the effects of aprotinin against SARS-CoV-2,” Michaelis added. The findings showed that aprotinin displayed anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity in different cell types (Caco2, Calu-3, and primary bronchial epithelial cell airliquid interface cultures) and against four virus isolates. “An approved aprotinin aerosol may have the potential for the early local

control of SARS-CoV-2 replication and the prevention of Covid-19 progression to a severe, systemic disease,” the study authors noted.

Covid-19 remains public health emergency: WHO World Health Organization (WHO) Emergency Committee on COVID-19 unanimously agreed that the ongoing global pandemic still constituted a public health emergency of international concern. ANFPSA serves 10-day ultimatum on govt to release pending bills DIMAPUR, OCT 31 (NPN): Setting a 10-day deadline on the state government to clear all transport and handling charges, the All Nagaland Fair Price Shop Association (ANFPSA) has threatened to launch “democratic forms of agitation” starting from November 11 if the government failed to meet their demands. In a statement, ANFPSA, through its Information Cell, warned that the government would be solely held responsible in the event of any untoward incident during the proposed stir. Expressing dismay with the state government’s lackadaisical attitude towards the Fair Price Shop dealers, ANFPSA demanded to know as to why the sanctioned amount was still kept pending when the amount was already in the department’s account?. It also reminded that the association was kept in the dark over its earlier request to the state government, through director Food & Civil Supplies for early release of the money. ANFPSA claimed that the transportation and handling

Researchers identify new drug to treat COVID patients L O ND O N , O C T 3 1 (IANS): In the continuing fight against the novel Coronavirus, researchers have now identified a drug with the potential to provide treatment for Covid-19 close to a year after it turned into a pandemic. The study, published in the journal Cells, found that the approved protease inhibitor aprotinin displayed activity against SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, in concentrations that are achieved in patients. According to the researchers, aprotinin aerosols are approved in Russia for the treatment of influenza and could be readily tested for the treatment of Covid-19. Aprotinin inhibits the entry of SARS-CoV-2 into host cells and may compensate for the loss of host cell protease inhibitors that are downregulated upon SARSCoV-2 infection. “The aproti-

It provided concrete and targeted advice for WHO and countries to focus on in the coming months, including evidence-informed, riskbased and coherent measures in relation to international traffic; surveillance and contact tracing efforts; maintaining essential health services including mental health services; and preparing plans for future COVID vaccines. The committee also urged countries to avoid politicisation of the pandemic response. “Governments should focus on tackling the virus and avoid politicisation,” Tedros said at a press briefing after the meeting. He called on countries to keep investing in the health system and workforce, and improving testing, tracing and treatment of all cases.

commission dues pending to the Fair Price Shop dealers included backblock of 2018-2019, 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 that will also be due in March 2021. Besides normal food grain distribution to NFSA beneficiaries, ANFPSA said that FPS dealers had also taken up additional responsibility to distribute free ration under various schemes as announced by the Central government from AprilNovember 2020, since the outbreak of COVID-19. Despite all these, ANFPSA said it was surprised by the department and state government’s apathy towards the FPS dealers for the delay in releasing the pending bills even after receiving the amount sanction by the Centre. Meanwhile, ANFPSA has appealed to the beneficiaries and the public to understand and support their genuine cause. It said that the form of agitation has been strategically worked out with the cooperation and support of all the All India Fair Price Shop Dealers’ Federation and its constituent district units.

NPCC alleges poll malpractice DIMAPUR, OCT 31 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K. Therie has warned that the BJP candidate to the 60 PungroKiphire by-election could face disqualification or defeat for violating the electoral laws by using allurements to woo voters. In a statement, Therie made the conclusion based on allegations of wrong doing by the candidate of the rival party adding it was only the tip of the iceberg. He also alleged that besides offering allurements to voters, the BJP allegedly also told voters that “Hindutva is just a propaganda and that it cannot reach Nagaland as we are all Christians.” In his statement, Therie attacked Hindutva as “the ultimate manifesto of BJP”. He alleged that the ideology was responsible for the gruesome killing of Graham Stuart Staines and children because the victims were Christians. Therie also said Hinduvta ideology was sought to be introduced in educational curricula.

and its significance. Amur Falcon migration and roosting in Nagaland generally starts from the last week of September to last week of November. Efforts at conservation and protection of the birds started in Mokokchung in 1989 under the initiatives of the Forest department at Changtongya village and it bore fruits as the Changtongya Village Council decided to protect

and conserve the Amur Falcon in 2001. Subsequently the Changtongya Community Biodiversity Reserve Forest at Kanglatu came into being and efforts of conservation spread further and Nagaland state received the international recognition and award in 2014 for protection and conser vation of Amur Falcons. However, the department statistics points out that Amur Falcons no

longer roost in large numbers in Mokokchung due to loss and fragmentation of habitat, human over population and removal of roosting trees. In this background, t h e Fo r e s t D i v i s i o n Mokokchung has been making efforts to make the birds roost again in Mokokchung. The programme was attended by various representatives of civil societies.

Will send Cong MLA to jail for lungi comment: Sarma Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI, OCT 31 (PTI): Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed, who created controversy by speaking of a ‘Miyan Museum’ in the precincts of the Srimanta Kalakshetra here, will be sent to jail in Assam for his “audacious comments” if BJP returns to power in the coming assembly poll, state minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday. He also lashed out at the Congress for “eyeing” the Kalakshetra since the protests over the Citizenship Amendemtn Act in Assam. Ahmed had demanded that the ‘Miyan Museum’ be set up inside the Kalakshetra after the standing committee of Assam assembly proposed the setting up of a ‘Char-Chapori’ (riverine) Museum. The ‘Miya Museum’, Ahmed had said, would exhibit the culture and traditions of the Bengali Muslims of erstwhile East Bengal who have settled in the riverine areas of lower and cenral Assam. “Ahmed when asked what could be exhibited in the Miya Musuem had the audacity to say blue lungis. He will not be forgiven for making such a statement which is an insult to our revered Vaishnav gurus Sankardeva and Madhavdeva”,

Sherman Ali Ahmed

Sarma told a press conference here. The minister said that the MLA will not be spared and after the elections. “He will be sent to jail if he does not publicly apologise,” he said. “This is a commitment I am making to the people of Assam,” Sarma said. Asked why the NDA government in the state will wait till after the elections and not deal with the Congress MLA now, Sarma retorted “If we do so now, he (Ahmed) will get a few more votes in the assembly elections and we do not want him to get that advantage”. He said, “After he (Ahmed) said this I could not sleep the whole night. His place is in the jail where he will definitely go.” The men in the riverine areas usually wear blue checked lungis (a sarong like garment wrapped around the waist). “We would have understood if he had said that the Char Chapori (riverine) museum would exhibit fishing equipment, fishing nets, music and the riverine culture of the fishermen but using the word ‘lungi’ in connection with the Kalakshetra cannot be accepted in any way ... The Assamese are very sensitive about both

Sankardeva and Madhavdeva”,,” Sarma asserted. Another Congress MLA Kamalakhya De Purkayastha has now demanded that a ‘Bengali Museum’ be set up inside the Kalakshetra. Referring to it, Sarma said he has noticed that theCongress is eyeing the Kalakshetra since the protests over the Citizenship Amendment Act when it was damaged. “Now these insensitive demands are being made ... Anybody with a little knowledge of Assam’s culture and traditions will not make such demands or statements. “Any Assamese will not demand that a photograph or idol of Devi Kamakhya, representing the Shakti cult, be put up inside the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra, a repository of Vaishanav culture and traditions,” he said. Sarma said it is unfortunate that such “insensitive statements” are coming from the Congress in which he had started his political career and spent his youth. Sar ma had been a minister in the Tarun Gogoi government before he defected to BJP. Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra is a cultural institution set up as part of the Assam Accord and named after the medieval reformer saint.

It must be so tough to take such a decision because she had to choose between

GUWAHATI, OCT 31 (PTI): The Assam government has decided to exempt foreign dignitaries and top officials from COVID-19 tests and quarantine upon their arrival in the state on official visits, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday. The administration has also given some relaxations to the commoners, exempting people testing negative for the infection in RT-PCR tests conducted within 72 hours before their arrival in Assam and locals returning within 24 hours of leaving the state from tests and quarantine, Sarma told reporters. However, the exemption for those testing negative forCOVID-19 in RTPCR tests will be subject to the production of satisfactory documents and verification of test results on the ICMR portal, he said. Children below 10 years of age arriving in Assam are also exempted from undergoing mandatory COVID-19 tests if they don’t exhibit any coronavirus symptom, he said, adding parents may, however, voluntarily get their wards tested for the infection. The exemption from tests and quarantine has

been extended to foreign dignitaries and diplomats of all embassies and diplomatic missions, officials of multilateral funding agencies like World Bank and Asian Development Bank, besides those from investigating, intelligence and security agencies and Income Tax Department on official visits to Assam, the minister said. He thanked the people of the state for celebrating Durga Puja with the utmost caution, because of which “cases are declining and the recovery rate is improving” in the post-festival COVID19 situation. The daily positivity rate is less than two per cent and the number of active cases, which had risen to 36,000 in September-end, has come down to 10,000, Sarma said. The recovery rate of over 95 per cent is very encouraging and the state is second only to Tamil Nadu in this regard but the daily deaths are a matter of concern, he said. “ We c o u l d h a v e achieved zero deaths but many patients came for treatment when the situation turned critical and it was difficult to save them,” the minister added.

Agartala, Oct 31 (PTI): A 90-year-old woman has been allegedly gangraped by two men in her house in Tripura, police said on Saturday. The incident took place at Barhaldi village in Kanchanpur subdivision of North Tripura district on October 24 but her relatives lodged a police complaint on October 29, a senior police officer said. The two men accused of raping the woman are absconding and a manhunt has been launched to nab them, Superintendent of Police Bhanupada Chakraborty said. “One of the accused used to call the woman ‘grandmother’, who was living alone in her house. On the night of the incident, he and another man broke into the house and raped the elderly woman,” the officer said. The woman had fallen ill after the incident but she did not inform the police. When her relatives came to know of the incident, they lodged the complaint five days later, he said. Police took her to a hospital and also recorded her statement, on the basis of which an inquiry has been started, the officer said.

tributes paid to Indira Gandhi India fully prepared to protect its territory: PM Rich on her 36th death anniversary

NEW DELHI, OCT 31 (PTI): Indian soldiers have the power to give a befitting reply to those eyeing the land of the country, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, adding that today India is fully prepared to protect its territorial integrity, sovereignty and honour. “India’s posture and approach at its borders have changed. Our brave soldiers are fully equipped and prepared to give a befitting reply to those who put their evil eyes on us. Security apparatus and infrastructure along our borders are stronger than ever!” Prime Minister said in Gujarat on the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. “The way some forces have openly come in support of terrorism is a global concern for world peace and humanity. It is more imperative now than ever that all nations, governments and sects must unite to defeat all forces that aid and abet terrorism,” he added. He also said all countries of the world need to unite against terrorism, no one can benefit from terrorism and violence. “The country can never forget that some people were not saddened at the sacrifice of the security personnel during the Pulwama attack. At that time, these people were only doing politics…I

request them not to do such politics in the interest of the nation,” he added. He added that the way the truth (about the Pulwama attack in India) has been admitted in the parliament of the neighbouring country, it has exposed the real faces of those who did politics over the incident. The Prime Minister further stated that 130 crore Indians together honoured the COVID-19 warriors in their fight against this pandemic. “The way the country has proved its collective potential during this time is unprecedented,” he added. Speaking about boosting tourism here, PM Modi said, “A seaplane service from Sardar Sarovar to Sabarmati riverfront will be started today. This will help boost tourism in this area. All these efforts are going to increase tourism in this

area too. Tribal people are getting equal chances of employment. I congratulate the Government of Gujarat and the people of the state for these achievements.” “Many new sites like Jungle Safari Park, Ekta Mall, Children’s Nutrition Park, Arogya Van have been launched here in Kevadia. In the coming time, on the banks of ‘Maa Narmada’, not only India but this place is going to make its place on the tourism map of the whole world,” he added. The Prime Minister also wished people on the occasion of Valmiki Jayanti today. “Sardar Patel gave the present form to India by making the diversity of the country, power of free India by uniting the hundreds of princely states of the country. In 2014, we all started celebrating his birthday as a festival of the unity of

India,” he added. Sardar Patel, who is credited with uniting all 562 princely states of the pre-independent country to build the Republic of India, passed away on December 15, 1950. India observes ‘National Unity Day’: India on Saturday observed ‘National Unity Day’ to commemorate the 145th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, with the president, the prime minister and a host of other dignitaries recalling his “iron-willed leadership and patriotism” and paying rich tributes to him. A series of events were held across the country to mark the day and government officials, security personnel and others took a pledge “to preserve the unity, integrity and security of the nation and also strive hard to spread this message”. President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah paid floral tributes to Patel, the first deputy prime minister and home minister who is credited with unifying the country post Independence. While the PM offered flowers at the ‘Statue of Unity’ monument in Kevadiya in Gujarat, the others paid tributes at his statue located at Patel Chowk in Delhi.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Modi also launched a seaplane service between the Statue of Unity and Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad. He also addressed probationary civil servants and said Sardar Patel used to call bureaucrats the “steel frame”. In a social media post, Vice President Naidu said his fervent wish was to make every child familiar with the life and contribution of Patel. Similarly every civil servant must read his speeches and every politician must imbibe Patel’s great qualities like integrity, firmness and keeping people’s interest at heart, he said. In a series of tweets in Hindi, Shah said the country’s first home minister is an epitome of national unity and lives in the heart of every Indian. He said Sardar Patel united the nation post Independence, which was scattered in hundreds of princely states, and laid the foundation of today’s strong India. The Centre observes October 31 across the country as a day to foster and reinforce the government’s dedication to preserve and strengthen the unity, integrity and security of the nation by celebrating it as the “Rashtriya Ekta Diwas” or “National Unity Day” to commemorate Patel’s birth anniversary.

NEW DELHI, OCT 31 (PTI): The nation on Saturday paid homage to former prime minister Indira Gandhi on her 36th death anniversary, recalling her contribution. Taking to Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Tributes to our former PM Smt. Indira Gandhi Ji on her death anniversary.” Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra led the party in paying homage to the leader. The Congress observed the day, which was also the birth anniversary of former deputy prime minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, as ‘Kisan Adhikar Divas’ (Farmers’ Rights Day). Party leaders and workers took out rallies and held protest fast in several parts of the country against the Centre’s farm laws. Whether it was the matter of nuclear test or breaking Pakistan into two and creating Bangladesh, she kept the country’s head high always, the Congress said in a tweet in Hindi as party leaders hailed her as the “Iron Lady of India”. Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra paid floral tributes to Indira Gandhi at her memorial “Shakti Sthal” here.

EC gives clean CPI(M), Cong join hands for Kamal Nath moves SC against EC taking chit to BJP’s free 2021 WB assembly polls away ‘star campaigner’ status in bypolls vaccine promise

Kamal Nath

NEW DELHI, OCT 31 (PTI): Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath has moved the Supreme Court challenging an order of the Election Commission to revoke the Congress leader’s “star campaigner” status for violations of the model code during campaign for the bypolls in 28 assembly constituencies in the state. Senior lawyer and Congress Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha told PTI that the former chief minister has challenged the EC’s decision on various grounds and an urgent hearing on his plea would be sought. The plea has been filed through advocate-on-record Varun Chopra and the de-

fects pointed out in it by the apex court registry have been cured, said Tankha. The poll panel on Friday took note of alleged breach of “ethical and dignified behaviour” and revoked the “star campaigner” status of the Congress leader. While the political party pays for the expenditure of a star campaigner, the candidate pays for the expenditure of other campaigners. In the order, the poll panel said, “...for repeated violation of Model Code of Conduct and for completely disregarding the advisory issued to him, the Commission hereby revokes the status of leader of political party (Star Campaigner)

of Kamal Nath, Ex-Chief Minister, Madhya Pradesh, with immediate effect for the current Bye-elections of Legislative Assembly of Madhya Pradesh.” It said no permission will be granted by authorities to Nath as a star campaigner. “However, if any campaign is done by Kamal Nath from now onwards, the entire expenditure related to travel, stay and visit will be completely borne by the candidate in whose constituency he carries out campaigning,” it said. The EC said it has carefully considered the matter and has observed with “displeasure that Kamal Nath, despite being a leader of a political party, is repeatedly violating the provisions of Model Code of Conduct and breaching the ethical and dignified behaviour”. The commission referred to his remarks against Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. He had used the words “mafia” and “milawat khor” against a political rival at a recent campaigning event.

NEW DELHI, OCT 31 (PTI): BJP’s promise of providing free coronavirus vaccine in its manifesto for the Bihar assembly polls is not violative of the provisions of the model code, the Election Commission has held. Responding to a complaint by RTI activist Saket Gokhale, the EC said it has found no violation of the provisions of the model code in the issue. “...no violation of any of the provisions of Model Code of Conduct has been observed...,” it said. Gokhale had claimed that the promise is discriminatory and a misuse of powers by the central government during elections. According to sources, the EC cited certain guidelines for election manifestos contained in Part VIII of the Model Code of Conduct to conclude that free vaccine promise was not violative of it. “The Directive Principles of State Policy enshrined in the Constitution enjoin upon the State to frame various welfare measures for the citizens and therefore there can be no objection to the promise...,” one of the provisions quoted by EC said.

NEW DELHI, OCT 31 (PTI): The Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has approved a tie up with the Congress for the upcoming assembly election in West Bengal, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said on Saturday, adding that alliances with secular parties in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Assam will be forged. The decision comes after the party held a virtual meeting on October 30 and 31. “In Kerala, the party will continue to contest elections as part of the LDF. In Tamil Nadu, the CPI(M) will contest the elections as part of the DMK-led alliance. In Assam, the CPI(M) will contest the elections in cooperation with all secular opposition parties, including the Congress, to defeat the incumbent BJP government in the state, which is sharpening communal polarisation, destabilising social harmony and heaping miseries on the people. “In West Bengal, the CPI(M) and the Left Front will have an electoral understanding with all secular parties, including the Congress, which seek to defeat

Cabinet expansion after assembly bypolls: Yediy BENGALURU, OCT 31 (PTI): Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Saturday said cabinet expansion would take place soon after the November 3 assembly bypoll and that the BJP candidate in RR Nagar, Munirathna, would be made a minister “soon after he wins”. “It (expansion) has been put on hold for quite some time due to various reasons. I will go to Delhi to discuss it with party leaders. It will take place soon after the bypoll results are announced,” he told reporters ahead of a road show in Rajarajeshwari Nagar. Asked about his announcement at the road show that Munirathna would be made minister, he said “I am 100 per cent going to make him minister after he wins the bypoll.’ Congress state chief DK Shivakumar flayed the announcement on Munirathna, saying it it was a violation of the model code of conduct.

the BJP and the TMC,” Yechury said. The high-stakes West Bengal assembly elections are likely to be held in May 2021 and within the CPI(M), the move to ally with the Congress is being seen as a “tactical” move to gain some lost ground in a state which the Left ruled for an uninterrupted 34 years. The party is down to 26 seats in the state assembly, which has a total of 294 seats, after the 2016 elections. The Left party, in a statement, also hit out at the Centre over the handling of the coronavirus pandemic. It said while the US, India and Brazil continued to report the highest number of COVID-19 cases and deaths, both the rate of growth in positive cases as well as the number of deaths in India were “alarming”. The party also extended its complete solidarity and support to the farmers protest call on November 26-27 and the call of the central trade unions for a nationwide general strike on November 26.

Congress activists pay tribute to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in Kolkata, Saturday (PTI)

Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra remembered their grandmother with messages on Twitter. “From the false to truth. From darkness to light. From death to life. Thank you Dadi for showing me what it means to live these words,” Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet and also posted a picture of the former prime minister. Local media reports from Himachal Pradesh stated he was in Shimla. In a tweet in Hindi, Priyanka noted that it was both her grandmother’s death anniversary and Maharishi Valmiki’s birth anniversary. “It was my grandmother who introduced me to Valmiki ji’s teachings. Valmiki

ji’s teachings inspire me to raise the voice of the underprivileged in the society and join their fight for justice,” she said. Indira Gandhi was recognised the world over as a strong leader, the Congress said on its official Twitter handle. The then prime minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her bodyguards in the national capital on this day in 1984. Widespread riots broke out after her assassination, in which nearly 3,000 Sikhs were killed. Eminent people from all walks of life paid homage to Indira Gandhi and floral tributes were offered at portraits and statues of the former prime minister in state capitals.

Highway blockades

D

espite efforts by the union home ministry to mediate over the boundary issue, tension continues along Assam-Mizoram border which had been simmering since October 9. Incidents along the border has resulted in the National Highway 306 being blockaded by locals on Assam’s side of the border for the fourth consecutive day on October 31. The deadlock at the Assam-Mizoram border has been on since October 9 when some volunteers erected a COVID-19 check gate. Festering since October 9, the situation along the 164.6-km Assam-Mizoram border took an ugly turn on October 17 when residents of Lailapur village in Cachar district of Assam collided with the locals of Kolasib district of Mizoram. Around 20 shops and houses were burnt and over 50 people injured in clashes. The Union Home Ministry has been trying to solve the dispute, but with little success. Locals on the Assam side are not allowing trucks carrying goods to enter Mizoram. They demand that Mizoram withdraw its armed police forces posted at the border which the latter has simply refused to oblige. Mizoram claims it is protecting its historical boundary and its officials accused Assam government officials of instigating the fresh blockade. The boundary row among north eastern states has been simmering since Assam was bifurcated to create new states. Assam has boundary disputes with Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland. The disputes did not arise out of thin air because some states wanted to poach land. The claims of several states over disputed areas along the border involve traditional boundaries. However, what worsened the situation has been Assam’s practise of encouraging settlement of both legal and illegal immigrant communities along its borders with other north eastern states. The Mizos have been demanding that illegal immigrants such as Brus from Bangladesh and Rohingiyas etc be removed from disputed territories. The illegal immigrants have been given land and opportunity in disputed areas so as to act as buffer against other states. In most occasions immigrants are allegedly involved in border incidents. However, aside from the incidents, what has attracted focus is the compulsive habit of adopting road blockades as a weapon. The ongoing blockade on Mizoram by agitators in Assam is not the first but among so many in the past. The national highway 306 is a national property constructed for the interests of the county and its citizens. Blockading national highways, by those involved is a clear act of declaring war on the affected state. No matter what the issue may be, no state can usurp the rights of the government of India’s authority over national highways by imposing blockades against any state to cause suffering and even starvation. New Delhi needs to relook this matter and ensure that states where agitators impose blockades should be made legally accountable. There is a clause in the National Highway Act 1956, sub-section 8 (1) which states: “whoever commit mischief by doing any act which renders or which he knows to be likely to render any National Highways refer to subsection (1) of section 8 (A) “impassable or less safe” for travelling or conveying property, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to 5 years, or fine with both”. The matter is clear so is the law and it is now up to the centre to put down such blockades once and for all.

DailyDevotion The Trial of Faith

If you have faith as small as a mustard seed…nothing will be impossible for you. —Matthew 17:20 We have the idea that God rewards us for our faith, and it may be so in the initial stages. But we do not earn anything through faith— faith brings us into the right relationship with God and gives Him His opportunity to work. Yet God frequently has to knock the bottom out of your experience as His saint to get you in direct contact with Himself. God wants you to understand that it is a life of faith, not a life of emotional enjoyment of His blessings. The beginning of your life of faith was very narrow and intense, centered around a small amount of experience that had as much emotion as faith in it, and it was full of light and sweetness. Then God withdrew His conscious blessings to teach you to “walk by faith” (2 Corinthians 5:7). And you are worth much more to Him now than you were in your days of conscious delight with your thrilling testimony. Faith by its very nature must be tested and tried. And the real trial of faith is not that we find it difficult to trust God, but that God’s character must be proven as trustworthy in our own minds. Faith being worked out into reality must experience times of unbroken isolation. Never confuse the trial of faith with the ordinary discipline of life, because a great deal of what we call the trial of faith is the inevitable result of being alive. Faith, as the Bible teaches it, is faith in God coming against everything that contradicts Him— a faith that says, “I will remain true to God’s character whatever He may do.” The highest and the greatest expression of faith in the whole Bible is— “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him” (Job 13:15).

We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are. ~ Anais Nin

Nagaland Post, Dimapur SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2020

T

he present-day state of affairs in Nagaland leaves much to be desired, it saddens the heart to see the web of greed and deceit being indulged with impunity and with scant regard for the rule of law. The writings on the wall are evident today as Nagaland has become like a ship without a rudder. This has ultimately given birth to all forms of social evils resulting in Violence, killing, gun-culture, hatred, divisive forces and massive corruption which seems to be the order of the day. Such as is evident the systematic collapse of all systems in the state. Should we, the Church remain silent and allow the already volatile situation to degenerate more? Or remain just silent spectators only. Two decades ago,the Spiritual leaders of the Church had given a call “Nagaland for Christ.” The reason is not far to seek as more than 95 % of the population are Christians. What does Christianity tellsus? What are the ideals and principles of Christianity? We all know that whatever is happening in Nagaland is absolutely contrary to what Jesus Christ stood for! How can we justify killing, hatred, mindless violence, extortion, tribalism, abuse of power, divisionism etc in the land that has been declared as “Nagaland for Christ.”? Has the true God been replaced by Mammon? The mind and soul of the people have become clouded by materialism. When materialism becomes the ‘ Mantra’ of living- the Church by itself becomes weak

(QuoVadis: Naga Christians)

and cannot stand as it is also manned by persons who are not God fearing. The Church is there to correct, admonish and guide the members to the true principles and teaching of Jesus Christ with no exception. Negative forces have raisedtheir ugly heads everywhere and in every sphere of activity. It has infused itself on our culture, traditions, and beliefs and even penetrated our faith. It is indeed disheartening to notice that the people of Nagaland have developed a thick skin and become quite immune to the acts of cruelty and barbaric acts of violence by the perpetrators. One of the most abhorring spectacles is that when killing takes place in the broad day light and in public view, no one raises voice against such barbarism. The Church prefers to remain silent even if killing take place at their very doorsteps. This is not only baffling, but also shocking! The Church leaders should have been the first to condemn suchheinous crimes but they would rather prefer to maintain a stoic silence. Democratic ideals and transparent principles of trust should have been the edifice on which modern Nagaland should built her future. Yet, the reality points exactly at the opposite. Now consider the political scenario in the State. D o w e h av e a n y doubts, that all the elected members of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly are Christians? But where are the guiding principles and ideals of Christianity in their conduct and in their running of the democratic

institutions? The great irony is that almost all electorates are also Christians! If any civilized person has a close look at the kind of election that takes place in Nagaland, he or she will be shocked and surprised to see how money and muscle power influences the voters. Surprisingly, those who are championing the cause of sovereignty actively are involved in the election for reasons best known to them. Election in Nagaland has become not only a thriving Industry but institutionalized. Votes are sold or auctioned openly to the highest bidder, who is advertently elected. Democratic ethics and the sanctity of the electoral process are routinely buried in the graveyard of greed, fear and manipulation. The elected MLAs are already bankrupt due the heavy expenditure incurred by them. Now what do the bankrupt members do? They devote their time and energy in amassing their wealth by fair or foul means to make up for what they had invested during their elections, and ultimately they have to cannibalize the fund meant for the people. In such a degenerated and vile socio-political scenario, can we expect something good to happen? The cycle is vicious: voters take money from all, votes are purchased by candidates, the highest bidders get votes from the voters, and in the process the elected candidates became totally bankrupt. Will they discuss about their debts or people’s welfare in the Assembly? This is a Billion dollars question and

it is the Church that should come out openly very courageously and speak out against such evil practices. Analyzing the entire gamut of electioneering process in the state, the root cause of this malady begins with the electorates. And the irony of the ironies is that all electorates are Christians! Who then start the process of reform? The Church that had declared “Nagaland for Christ ‘’ should take the lead to inspire believers on the path of moral recovery. The people of Nagaland want everything in one basket without actually doing anything. Politics is their only bread and butter now. Their over-indulgence in politics has pushed everything to the backseat; academic activity, infrastructure building, economic activity, social regeneration and rejuvenation, discipline, good governance- everything associated with a civilized society has been swept under the carpet. Only thing that concerns the people of Nagaland is money and material gain. Who should guide and take the people under the umbrella of trust, ethical conduct, morality, honesty and love? It is the Church that should wake up from its slumber and attend to the call of the land and save it from further degeneration. There should be a resurgence of systems in the state which has long been discarded such as political ethics, economic growth, social welfare, educational, good governance, polity and many others which require a new lease of life. In general the Naga public were left

to fend for themselves for past more than six decades the result of which is not far to seek. Will it not be an opportune time to uplift the Nagas from their present mindset of dichotomy? They have made dwarfed themselves in all respects because whatever they have done was circumscribed by narrow domestic view point. The Nagas focus should be global, a world in tune with the current scenario in the country and the world. This is a very special question put before the Nagas, especially the younger generation. We have learnt from history that if a culture is willing to switch over tracks cultural transformation is definitely possible. “Cultures are like a huge locomotive, sitting on different tracks at the World Train Station. Trains may be there without moving, it will neither carry the passengers nor reach the destination. Naga political struggle or demand is exactly like the train which does not move to any direction but remains in the station. The Nagas have to choose a train that moves in other tracks. Many perceive peace as the absence of war or violence. Peace is the transformation of contextual and destructive interactions into more co-operative and constructive existence. The next question is when to move? Time Focus; Present-and-Future or Pastor Present oriented. Time focus had four categories: time past, the present, the immediate future and the distant future that merges into the afterlife. Time-focus for a progressive-prone culture is present and future

oriented. Time is an arrow, in flight, and heading for a goal. The present and the future are considered that the only time dimension that can be acted on, plan for, and influenced. Golden Age of humanity is not remembered from the past, but anticipated in the future. If this is the case, should the Nagas continue to eulogizing the past or we have to choose the present and future. As the book of Ecclesiastes says For everything there is a season, a time for every matter under heaven, a time to be born and a time to die, a time to kill a time to heal; a time to break down , and a time to build up etc. Is it not a time to build up? As a Christian State and to demonstrate in reality the proclamation that Nagaland for Christ, is it not time to dethrone hatred and coronate love, to dethrone hypocrisy and coronate truthfulness, to dethrone violence and coronate peace and dethrone ill-will towards others and coronate compassion in our hearts? God wants to empower us to impact the world for Him so that it reflects His Kingdom. Isaiah 60: 1-3. “Arise, shine, for your light has come and the glory of the Lord is risen upon you, For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth , And deep darkness the people, But the Lord will arises over you and His glory will be seen upon you. Nations will come to your light.” Surely Nagaland will come to God’s light, may be the time is TODAY. S. C. Jamir, Former CM & Governor

Will enact law to curb ‘Love Jihad’: Yogi JAUNPUR / DEORIA (UP) OCT 31 (PTI): Welcoming the Allahabad High Court ruling that declared the conversion for the sole purpose of marriage as null and void, Uttar Pradesh C h i e f M i n i s t e r Yo g i Adityanath on Saturday said his government would deal with “love jehad” with a firm hand. If the people do not stop “playing with honours of daughters and sisters” by concealing their identities, “the Ram Naam Satya journey will start”, said the chief minister in a stern warning. “The Allahabad High Court had yesterday said the conversion should not be resorted to solely for the marriage and it should not be given validity,” said Adityanath, adding his government is also “taking a decision to check love jehad sternly”. The chief minister made the remarks while addressing a rally for the November 3 byelections for the Malhani assembly seat in Jaunpur and that of Deoria.

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath addresses a public meeting, in Jaunpur district, Saturday (PTI)

“We will bring an effective law. It is my warning to those who play with the honour and dignity of sisters and daughters by hiding their real names and identities, if they do not mend their ways, the Ram Naam Satya journey will start,” said Adityanath. “The posters of those involved in love jehad will be put on all road crossings,” he said Referring to the Mission Shakti programme of his government, the chief minister said the programme is meant to ensure the safe-

ty, security and honour of women, but if anyone still dares to indulge in any misadventure, the Operation Shakti is underway. “The court’s verdict will be followed and the honour and dignity of women will be ensured,” he declared. In Deoria, he said, an attempt was made to illegally grab the ashram of renowned saint Devraha Baba following which he was forced to shift to Vrindavan. This has prompted the BJP government to start

building a hospital there in his name, he said, adding the academic work too will start there from the next session and the people of the area will also get expert medical treatment. Claiming that the rule of mafia and goonda elements has come to an end in the state, the chief minister said the Samajwadi Party chief is today worried because he had sympathy for such elements but the government has launched a drive against them. Attacking the Congress, SP and Bahujan Samaj Party, the chief minister said their governments had worked on the basis of caste while the BJP government is working for all sections of the society with complete sincerity, honesty and devotion. The chief minister said seeing the massive support to his party, the Samajwadi Party, out of desperation, is conspiring to instigate riots in the state where no such incident has taken place for the past three and half years nor would it be allowed at any cost.

Won’t be surprised if Tejashwi becomes Bihar CM: Raut

PUNE, OCT 31 (PTI): Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said on Saturday that he would not be surprised if the Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav became chief minister after the Bihar Assembly polls. Speaking at an event organised by the Pune Union of Working Journalists, Raut said all eyes are on ongoing elections in the northern state. “There is a youngster who does not have any support, and investigation agencies like CBI and ED are hounding him. He is challenging the Union government as it is suppressing opposition parties,” the Sena leader said, referring to Tejashwi. “Therefore, I will not be surprised if he became the chief minister of Bihar,” Raut added. He also hit out at National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah and PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti who have sought restoration of Article 370 which gave autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir.

PAI 2020: Nagaland poorly governed among 5 small states (From p-1) Explaining the report, Aparna Shrinivas, researcher of the paper, said, “States were assessed based on the data they share on public domain and what has been submitted to the Central government. It includes health, governance, children, malnutrition, women and child welfare, infrastructure, access to resources, gender equality in political and administra-

tive participation and the Niti Aayog Report. Kerala ranked first in growth and sustainability but second in equity. For the study, 18 large States, 11 small States and seven Union Territories were assessed. “Since there is no platform for States to evaluate themselves, through this we are showing them the mirror of what they have done and where they have lost out. The assessment

is very subjective and if there are any differences in ground, then it only means that the data put on public domain and handed over by the Centre needs to be rechecked,” Aparna said. Kerala ranked as best governed state by Public Affairs Index: Kerala was adjudged the best governed state in the country while Uttar Pradesh ended at the bottom in the large states category, according to the

Public Affairs Index-2020 released by the Public Affairs Centre in Bengaluru on Friday. In its annual report released on Friday, the city-based not-for-profit organisation, , headed by former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman K Kasturirangan, said the states were ranked on governance performance based on a composite index in the context of sustainable development. Four south-

ern states, Kerala (1.388 PAI Index point), Tamil Nadu (0.912), Andhra Pradesh (0.531) and Karnataka (0.468) stood in the first four ranks in the large state category in terms of governance, it said. Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Bihar were at the bottom of the ranking, scoring negative points in the category. They got - 1.461, -1.201 and -1.158 points respectively.

NMC notifies new norms for MBBS admissions, setting up of med colleges NEW DELHI, OCT 31 (PTI): In a major move, the newly constituted National Medical Commission has removed the provision of requirement of minimum five acres of land for setting up a medical college and its affiliated teaching hospitals while making skills laboratories mandatory. The National Medical Commission (NMC), since its constitution on September 25, 2020, has come out with a detailed list of requirements applicable for setting a new medical college, and to the established medical colleges proposing to increase their annual MBBS intake from the academic year 2021-22, the health ministry said on Saturday. The requirement for the number of beds in a medical college hospital has been reduced from 530 to 430 for a 100-seat college, and from 930 to 830 for a 200-seat college, according to the new regulations notified. The beds required in various departments of a teaching hospital have been rationalised to align with the annual student intake, teaching time to be spent in clinical specialties and the minimum clinical material required for undergraduate medical training which has resulted in about 10 per cent reduction in teaching bed needs compared to the earlier regulations. The human resource of teaching faculty has also been rationalised under the new regulations. Over and above the minimum prescribed faculty, the pro-

BENGALURU, OCT 31 (PTI): A high speed journey on the Bengaluru-Mysuru rail route was so smooth after intensive track maintenance work that it passed a test where not a drop of water spilled out from a glass kept on a table in a coach, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said. classes for standards 9-12 alone shall be conducted, he said. Schools, which were closed in March, are set to resume. Though the government had earlier announced that students in classes from 10 to 12 would be permitted to go to schools on a voluntary basis from October 1, the move was dropped subsequently in view of concerns over the virus spread. Using upto 50 per cent seats, cinema theatres, and multiplexes and zoos and amusement parks shall all resume functioning from November 10. SOP should be followed, Palaniswami said adding the relaxations are not applicable to containment zones. With the easing of curbs, most restrictions have been lifted. Wholesale fruit dealers would be allowed to work at the Koyambedu complex from November 2. Fruit and vegetable retailers shall be permitted at Koyambedu premises from November 16. The new regulation has deleted the quantum of land required for setting up a medical college and its affiliated teaching hospitals, it said. In tier 1 and tier 2 cities, hilly and north-east states and notified tribal areas, the campus could also be on two plots of land – one housing the teaching hospital and the other the medical college with hostels for students and interns, the notification stated. If the campus is housed in more than one plot of land, the distance between each one of these plots should be less than 10 kms or less than that of 30 minutes travelling time. “Provided that where the government district hospital is being considered for use as the teaching hospital of a medical college, all constituents of the district hospital, even if they are on two plots of land, will be considered as the affiliated teaching hospital, provided that the main district hospital has at least 300 beds or in Hilly and North-East states has 250 beds,” it said. According to the new regulations, every medical institution shall have a skills laboratory where students can practice and improve skills pre-specified in the curriculum.

CHENNAI, OCT 31 (PTI): Easing curbs further, the Tamil Nadu government on Saturday allowed schools, colleges, cinemas, zoos and amusement parks to reopen from next month by following Standard Operating Procedures to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Announcing the new relaxations, Chief Minister K Palaniswami said religious, cultural, social, political and entertainment events could be held from November 16 and upto 100 people could take part. He declared the fresh relaxations following consultations with experts, and top government officials. Suburban train services may resume, he said in an official release, adding however, a decision in this regard has to be taken by the Central government. Schools, all colleges, research and other educational institutions, besides hostels would be allowed to open from November 16, the chief minister said. As regards schools,

vision for ‘visiting faculty’ has been made to enhance the quality of training, the ministry said. The medical college and its affiliating teaching hospital should provide for proportionate additional beds, infrastructure, faculty and other human resource in any specialty depending upon the needs and patient load. The new standards have been defined keeping the functional requirements of the institution(s). These allow optimisation and flexibility in utilising available resources, and harnessing modern educational technology tools to facilitate moving towards quality education, even when resources are relatively scarce, the ministry said. “In a significant step towards affordable medical education, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has notified its first major regulation. Titled as ‘Minimum Requirements For Annual MBBS Admissions Regulations (2020)’, the notification replaces the Minimum Standard Requirements for Medical Colleges, 1999 (for 50/100/150/200/250 Annual Admissions) of the erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI),” the ministry said.

for and insisted on my transfer from the Ministry of Finance in June 2019 itself, within one month of her taking over as the FM,” Garg claimed. “PK Mishra, then Additional Principal Secretary, who oversaw the appointments and transfers in the PMO, asked me to come over for a chat on July 18. He knew of the situation fully. In fact, we had discussed my relationship with Mrs Sitharaman on a few occasions before as well. Both of us agreed that the best course would be for me to make way for the new FM to ‘function smoothly’,” Garg said. “Dr Mishra was quite

no great fun in working in the government. This was the first major reason of my contemplating to leave the government,” he said. Garg said that the situation, after the 2019 elections, unfortunately took a turn for the worse. He alleged that the government forgot the agenda for a $10 trillion economy. “The government did talk about making India a $5 trillion economy by 2024-25 after the elections and winning a great majority. But the reforms agenda and the investment plan for attaining the goal of $10 trillion economy articulated in the Interim Budget 2019-20 however, got sidetracked and was virtually forgotten,” the former officer said. “The government was turning populist as well. As part of a 100-day programme, a number of announcements were made, aimed to please specific constituencies. The reforms agenda was acquiring a tinge of being more short-term and tinkering type.

I explained to him that my decision to leave the government was not out of any pique or resentment, but quite a well-considered one and that this was in my best interests. He asked me to reconsider my decision anytime,” Garg aded. Garg said that the reason for leaving the government was that he was getting disappointed after the Union Budget of 2019. “I was getting quite disappointed. NEW DELHI, OCT 31 (IANS): Former Economic Affairs Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg has claimed that Nirmala Sitharaman asked for and insisted on his transfer from the Ministry of Finance in June 2019 itself, within a month of taking over as the Union Finance Minister. Giving reasons for taking voluntary retirement from government service last year, Garg wrote in a blog: “Quite frankly, I did not share a good and productive working relationship with the new Finance Minister and I did not want to work anywhere outside the Ministry of Finance.” Profusely praising late Arun Jaitley as the Finance Minister, Garg said that with the new incumbent Sitharaman “it became quite apparent very early that working with her was going to be quite difficult and it may not be conducive to undertaking necessary reforms for the attainment of the objective of building a $10 trillion economy of India”.

B RU S S E L S, O C T 3 1 (IANS): The Belgian government has announced that a national lockdown will be imposed on Monday after the country was reported to have the highest Covid-19 infection rate in Europe. Under the new lockdown, non-essential shops and businesses offering personal services like hair salons will remain closed across Belgium until the middle of December, the BBC reported. While gatherings in public spaces will be limited to a maximum of four people, supermarkets will be allowed to sell only essential goods. Households will be permitted to have just one

visitor and the incumbent night-time curfew measures and closures of bars and restaurants will continue. In a statement on Friday, Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke allayed fears, saying the new lockdown “will not plunge people into isolation”. “It’s a lockdown, but a lockdown that allows factories to operate, that will allow schools to open cautiously,” the BBC quoted Vandenbroucke as saying. While announcing the new measures, Prime Minister Alexander de Croo said the country “finds itself in a health emergency”, adding: “These are last-chance measures if we want to get the figures down.”

AFAD said it measured 6.6. and hit at a depth of some 16 kilometers (10 miles). It was felt across the eastern Greek islands and as far as Athens and in Bulgaria. In Turkey, it shook the regions of Aegean and Marmara, including Istanbul. Istanbul’s governor said there were no reports of damage in the city, Turkey’s largest.

YEREVAN (ARMENIA), OCT 31 (AP): Armenia’s leader urged Russia Saturday to consider providing security assistance to end the fighting over NagornoKarabakh, the biggest escalation in the decades-long conflict between his country and Azerbaijan. Following more than a month of intense fighting in which Azerbaijani troops forged into the separatist territory, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian asked Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to quickly discuss possible security aid to his country. There was no immediate response from the Kremlin. The request came as Azerbaijani troops forged deeper into Nagorno-Karabakh and both sides accused each of breaking a mutual pledge not to target residential areas hours after it was made. Russia, which has a military base in Armenia and has signed a pact obliging it to protect its ally in case of foreign aggression, faces a delicate balancing act of trying to maintain good ties with Azerbaijan and avoid a showdown with Turkey. Nagor no-Karabakh lies within Azerbaijan but has been under the control

SFAX, OCT 31 (AP): A third suspect is in French custody Saturday in connection with an Islamic extremist knife attack that killed three people in a Nice church, as the family of the suspected Tunisian assailant demanded to see video footage of what happened. Investigators in France, Tunisia and Italy are trying to determine the motive of chief suspect Ibrahim Issaoui and whether he acted alone and whether he premeditated Thursday’s attack on the Notre Dame Basilica. Authorities have labelled the attack, which took place amid growing tensions around cartoons published by a French newspaper mocking the Prophet Muhammad, an act of Islamist terrorism,

Issaoui, who transited through Italy last month en route to France, is in critical condition in a French hospital after being wounded by police as they arrested him. A 35-year-old man who had met with Issaoui in Nice was arrested overnight, a judicial official said Saturday. A 47-year-old man who had met with Issaoui the night before the attack was already in custody, bringing the number of detained suspects to three. Their connection to the attack remains unclear. A previously unknown Tunisian extremist group claimed responsibility for the attack, and Tunisian and French authorities are investigating whether the claim is legitimate. In Issaoui’s home-

town of Sfax, his family expressed shock and appealed for peace. But they also expressed bewilderment that this young man who drank alcohol and showed no outward signs of radicalism would flee to France and attack a church. “We want the truth about how my son carried out this terrorist attack. I want to see what the surveillance cameras showed. I will not give up my son’s rights outside the country. I want my son, dead or alive,” his mother Gamra told The Associated Press, her words often interrupted by tears. His father and brother Wissem said that if Issaoui indeed carried out the attack, he should face justice. “We are Muslims, we are against terrorism, we

are poor. Show me that my brother committed the attack and judge him as a terrorist,” Wissem said. “If he was the attacker, he will take his responsibility.” On the dusty Tina Street in the Nasr neighbourhood of Sfax, his friends and neighbours described Issaoui as a man who sold gasoline for motorcycles. While not starving or homeless, he was poor like many in the area, poverty that is driving more and more young Tunisians to seek jobs and opportunity in Europe. He had had smalltime run-ins with the law as a teen, but nothing that alerted Tunisian authorities to possible extremist leanings. That meant that when he was served an expulsion

Biden called them super-predators, ripped apart their communities, and did everything in his power to wipe out the Black middle class, said the president. Noting that Biden’s plan will delay the COVID19 vaccine, postpone therapies, crash the economy, and shut down the entire country, Trump asserted that under his plan, the administration will deliver a safe vaccine to the American People in just a few

of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia since a war there ended in 1994. The latest outburst of hostilities began September 27 and left hundreds — perhaps thousands — dead, marking the worst escalation of fighting since the war’s end. On Friday, the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan met in Geneva for a day of talks, which were brokered by Russia, the United States and France, co-chairs of the socalled Minsk Group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe that tries to mediate the decades-long conflict. The talks concluded close to midnight with the two sides agreeing they “will not deliberately target civilian populations or non-military objects in ac-

cordance with international humanitarian law.” But shortly after the mutual pledge was announced by the Minsk Group co-chairs, NagornoKarabakh authorities accused Azerbaijani forces of firing rockets at a street market and a residential building in the separatist region’s capital, Stepanakert. They said that residential areas in the town of Shushi also came under Azerbaijani shelling. The rapid failure of the latest attempt to contain the fighting follows the collapse of three successive ceasefires. A US-brokered truce frayed immediately after it took effect Monday, just like two previous cease-fires negotiated by Russia. The warring sides have repeatedly blamed each other for violations.

Biden is corrupt career politician, betrayed Americans for last 47 years: Trump WASHINGTON, OCT 31 (PTI): US President Donald Trump has accused his rival and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden of being a corrupt career politician who has done nothing but betray the Americans for the last 47 years. Trump is known to make unsubstantiated allegations against his rival, often making untrue claims. There is no evidence of Biden ever being tainted by corruption. Addressing a rally in Rochster in Minnesota on Friday, Trump, 74, said Biden has obsession for power. “Biden is a grimy, sleazy and corrupt career politician who has done nothing but betrayed you for 47 long years. He will look you in the eyes, and then turn right around and stab you in the back. The only thing he cares about is political power,” Trump said. A Democratic stronghold, Trump is seeking to wrest Minnesota for the Republicans for decades. He is currently trailing behind Biden with five percentage points. Making a strong case for his re-election, Trump told his supporters that giving him a decisive victory on November 3 is the only way to defend their dignity. “There is only one way to defend your family and your country. The US is the worstaffected nation by the coronavirus, with the total number of infections and deaths standing at 9,034,925 and 229,544 respectively, according to Johns Hopkins University. “Over the next four years, we will make America into the Manufacturing Superpower of the World, and we will end our reliance on China once and for all,” he said. Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has accused President Donald Trump of dividing the US and turning Americans against one another based on race, ethnicity and national anthem. Speaking at a rally in Minnestota on Friday, Biden said the US cannot afford to have Trump for another four years as the country’s President. “The only thing that can tear America apart is America itself. That’s exactly what Donald Trump has been doing from the beginning. Divide America. Pitting Americans against one another based on race, ethnicity, national origin. That’s wrong. That’s not who we are. Everybody knows who Donald Trump is. Let’s keep showing him who we are,” Biden said. Biden, 77, who has been having restrictive campaigning and strictly adhering to the social distancing measures due to the coronavirus pandemic asserted that the US can

order from Italy, he was basically free to go where he pleased. Italy’s interior minister, Luciana Lamorgese, told the AP that Italy’s overburdened repatriation centers had no place for him, despite agreements with Tunisia governing the return of citizens who don’t

qualify for asylum in Italy. “Obviously, we give precedence to people who are signalled by law enforcement or by Tunisian authorities,’’ Lamorgese said. “The number of spots are not infinite, and he could not therefore be placed inside a repatriation centre.’’

LONDON, OCT 31 (PTI): UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is considering a month-long nationwide lockdown amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the country with an announcement expected as early as Monday, according to reports quoting government sources. Johnson met his most senior Cabinet colleagues on Friday to discuss the possible toughening of restrictions in light of worsening coronavirus infection rate and hospital cases. Everything except essential shops and education settings could be closed under the new measures, ‘The Times‘ newspaper reports, with the hope that measures can be lifted in the lead up to Christmas in December. But no final decisions are believed to have been made and tougher regional measures under the current three-tier localised lockdown measures are also being considered. UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak, Health Secretary Matt Hancock, Chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster Michael Gove were all understood to be present at the discussion. 10 Downing Street is yet to issue a response to the reports that Johnson could hold a news conference on Monday to announce the new measures or that further restrictions are imminent.

IZMIR (TURKEY), OCT 31 (AP): Rescue teams on Saturday plowed through concrete blocks and the debris of eight collapsed buildings in search of survivors of a powerful earthquake that struck Turkey’s Aegean coast and north of the Greek island of Samos, killing at least 37 people. More than 800 others were injured. The quake hit Friday afternoon, toppling buildings in Izmir, Turkey’s third largest city, and triggering a small tsunami in the district of Seferihisar and on Samos. The quake was followed by hundreds of aftershocks. Early on Saturday, onlookers cheered as rescuers lifted teenager Inci Okan out of the rubble of a devastated eight-floor apartment block in Izmir’s Bayrakli district. Her dog, Fistik, was also rescued, Sozcu newspaper reported. Friends and relatives waited outside the building for news of loved ones still trapped inside, including employees of a dentist’s surgery that was located on the ground floor. In another collapsed building, rescuers made contact with a 38-year-old woman and her four children — aged 3, 7 and 10year old twins — and were working to clear a corridor to bring them out, state-run

egendary actor Sir Sean Connery has passed away at the age of 90. The news of the Scottish star's demise was communicated by his family, according to a report in bbc.com. No official reason

has been shared for the death yet. Connery, who is widely recalled as the original James Bond on Hollywood screen, had an active career as an actor spanning nearly five decades.

M Y

ouTube blogger G a u r av Wa s a n , who had posted the Baba ka Dhaba video of an elderly couple running a dhaba in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, shared his bank statement after people accused him of online scam. However, netizens are yet to trust him. Gaurav took to his official page Swaad on Facebook to reveal his bank statement. “Transparency link

verified by bank. Anybody who donated can go and verify re-verify. Thank you for supporting,” he wrote. However, netizens are doubting his intentions. One commented: “I saw his video where he was claiming 20 plus lakh donations, and now he is talking about two lakh donation. Something fishy.” “Column misaligned”, another user commented about the bank statement, while another user called

it an “unprofessional bank statement”, which has been “edited a lot”. In early October, Gaurav had posted a video of an elderly Malviya Nagar couple. They were driven to tears for not being able to do business at their dhaba owing to the pandemic. The video got viral, and actors like Raveena Tandon and Nimrat Kaur had urged people to help the couple. (IANS)

Natural antioxidants can keep heart healthy at winters

I

n view of the winter season and Covid-19 pandemic, health experts on Saturday said that taking natural antioxidants may help keep the heart healthy along with other health benefits. “We are a little worried about our health because those people get more affected by Covid who have heart related problems. During this situation at an individual level, you can work harder to protect ourselves by improving immunity and heart health,” the experts said. Experts suggest taking natural antioxidants like Gamma-oryzanol, a natural antioxidant found in K Y M C

rice bran which is also gaining popularity in India. Most research shows that taking gamma oryzanol decreases total cholesterol, “bad” low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and blood fats called triglycerides in people with high cholesterol. Gamma-oryzanol, a mixture of antioxidant compounds in the bran’s oil fraction, is thought to play a role in reducing blood cholesterol levels, among other health-promoting benefits. As Gamma-oryzanol is found to be effective in controlling high cholesterol level in the body, it is registered in Japan and the

US as a natural medicine to treat hyperlipidemia (elevated cholesterol levels). “Gamma-or yzanol is useful for controlling elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels, supporting cardiovascular health along with controlling menopausal symptoms,” Dr. Swapna Chaturvedi, senior dietician from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi, told IANS. “Gamma-or yzanol helps lower cholesterol because it helps decrease cholesterol absorption and increases cholesterol elimination. Along with this it is also known to boost metabolic rate and may help with weight loss,” Chaturvedi added. According to Praveen Chandra, Head of Department, Interventional Cardiology, Medanta Hospital in Gur ugram, Gamma oryzanol also helps in preventing heart attack by preventing platelet aggregation, a system where platelets blood gets stuck together and form clots that block arteries. The experts stressed

that people with weak hearts should be particularly careful during the winter season. Though they should continue to exercise regularly, they should modify their timings, so as to avoid extreme weather. (IANS)

o reach out to their fans in India, BTS sat down for an exclusive interview with NDTV‘s Rohit Khilnani. Due to all of the group’s accomplishments, such as topping Billboard charts and selling out concerts worldwide, Rohit asked the group how they manage to stay humble. Jungkook spoke for them all with his response on how they keep their heads on straight, no matter how many awards they receive or the growing number of people who know their names. In response to all of BTS’s accomplishments, Jungkook shared that every single one they received still felt unbelievable. “They are all amazing things that we still can’t make sense of.” He then mentioned the source of what had made them successful enough to earn those achievements. Fans were the ones who pushed them to the top: “There could be various factors that contributed to us coming this far, may it be our effort or timing. But, we truly believe that the love and support from ARMY made all of this possible.” Knowing that ARMY is the main force that gen-

erated their fame reminds BTS not to take anything for granted or let their superstardom blind them. “That’s the most impor-

tant thing that keeps us grounded.” Since their debut back in 2013, BTS has never shown a side of themselves

that was anything but humble. From Jungkook’s heartwarming response, it makes perfect sense why. (Koreaboo)

“No language barrier in music,” says BTS Speaking exclusively to NDTV’s Rohit Khilnani, BTS said, “There is no language barrier when it comes to music. We also listen to songs of various languages that we don’t understand. Music is a medium that connects people. And we thank ARMY for enjoying our songs even though they don’t speak the language.” BTS have been particularly busy during the pandemic. Apart from releasing Dynamite in August, they performed an online concert and will release their new album BE on November 20. “More than ever, during this global pandemic, music transcends barriers, nationalities and age. It’s encouraging for us to hear how our music gave some energy through a difficult period,” BTS told NDTV. It hasn’t been easy, of course. “Our fans are of course the driving force that motivates us. We are here today because of them. For this concert, we were able to see our fans through screens and we could also hear their voices. It’s been such a long time since we last saw them, so it was a very emotional and overwhelming experience. We were also thankful that so many fans joined us to enjoy the concert. With the help of technology, we could narrow the gap between us and our fans, which makes us feel comfortable with online concerts,” BTS said. (NDTV)

is clearer when I am still," she said. "I truly cherish this time with my family, and my new goal is to slow down and shed stressful things from my life. I came into the music industry at 15 years old and grew up with the world watching, and I have put out projects non-stop," she added. Man United beat Sheffield 1-0; chelsea beat burnley 3-0 La Liga: Real Madrid beat Huesca 4-1

MANCHESTER,OCT 31 (AGENCIES): Kyle Walker marked his 100th Premier League appearance for Manchester City with a goal against his former club as Pep Guardiola’s side beat Sheffield United, reports BBC Sports. The right-back, who came through the ranks at the Blades, struck midway through the first half with a superb long-range strike. It was a deserved goal for a Manchester City side who dominated the first half, and they could have added another but for an excellent save by Aaron Ramsdale from Ferran Torres’ header. Ramsdale did well again in the second half when he dived at full stretch to keep out a Riyad Mahrez free-kick. But from then on the visitors struggled to find a second goal that would kill the game off and United should have capitalised when substitute John Lundstram fired just over from Sander Berge’s cross. That was as close as the Blades came as City took their third league win of the season to move into the top half of the table. Sheffield United remain winless and in the relegation zone with just one point from their first seven games. After he played a star-

They have taken just one point from their first seven games - compared to eight at the same stage of last season - and while a win against City was always going to be a tall order, they rarely looked like they believed they could cause an upset. The hosts barely laid a glove on City in the first half but a good 15-minute spell after the break - when they provided a glimpse of their old selves - produced their

Walker’s goal was his fourth for Manchester City.

ring role in the 3-0 win against Marseille in the Champions League in midweek, Walker was described by Guardiola as being in the best form of his City career. While City’s displays have been patchy this season - and they were again far from their attacking best in this game - the consistently high-quality performances from Walker have been a big positive. Such is Guardiola’s faith in the 30-year-old rightback that his position is the only one he has not rotated, with Walker the only player to have started every game this season. His goal against his hometown club was a wonderfully clean strike, hit with power and precision from 25 yards and into the bottom corner.

In the second half, a burst of pace saw him get in behind the United defence and his cut-back was half cleared to Kevin de Bruyne, who flashed a shot just wide. While City are yet to truly sparkle in attack, their recent defensive displays are encouraging. This was a second successive clean sheet with Walker and Joao Cancelo impressing in the full-back positions while Aymeric Laporte and Ruben Dias are developing into a strong central defensive partnership. Having enjoyed a fairy tale return to the Premier League last season, when they finished ninth, it is looking increasingly likely that this is going to be a long and difficult campaign for the Blades.

best chance when Lundstram fired over. Scoring goals is proving difficult for the Blades this season despite the addition of striker Rhian Brewster from Liverpool for a clubrecord £23.5m. They had just one shot on target in this game and have not scored more than one goal in a game so far this season, leaving them heavily reliant on a defence that has yet to keep a clean sheet.

Chelsea beat Burnley 3-0

Hakim Ziyech shined and Kurt Zouma and Timo Werner were also on target as Chelsea enjoyed an easy 3-0 win at struggling Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday, reports Star Sports. Chelsea, after a long trip to Krasnodar in Russia in midweek, made five changes from Wednesday’s Champions League starting line-up and made a bright start at Turf Moor. The impressive Ziyech drilled the ball home in the 26th minute from the edge of the box, after a smart passing move from Frank Lampard’s team, to claim his first league goal for the club. B u r n l e y, w h o a r e without a win and have just a single point from their opening six games, struggled to cause any real

problems for the Chelsea defence and manager Sean Dyche threw on an extra striker at the break with Jay Rodriguez coming on. While that gave Burnley more of an attacking presence, Chelsea comfortably dealt with early second half pressure from the Clarets and then extended their lead in the 63rd minute when Zouma thundered in a header from a Mason Mount corner. The outcome was put beyond any doubt when Burnley midfielder Ashley Westwood’s pass was intercepted by Reece James and Ziyech did well to feed Werner, the German confidently beating Nick Pope from inside the area. Chelsea substitute Olivier Giroud had an effort ruled out for offside as the visitor looked to add to their tally.

Eden Hazard’s last goal for Real Madrid came on 5 October 2019 against Granada in La Liga.

Clinical SRH beat RCB by 5 wickets; keep play-off hopes alive

SHARJAH/Dubai OCT 31 (PTI): Pushed to the wall, Sunrisers Hyderabad produced a clinical performance to beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by five wickets and stay alive in the Indian Premier League Play-off race, here on Saturday. SRH first produced a brilliant bowling effort to restrict a batting-heavy RCB to a modest 120 for seven and then chased down the target in 14.1 overs to zoom to fourth spot in the standings from seventh. SRH now have 12 points from 13 games and need to win their last league game against table-toppers Mumbai Indians to stay in the hunt. RCB, who needed a win to seal their Play-offs berth, slumped to their third consecutive defeat in the tournament but stayed at second place in the table with 14 points from 13 games. The 121-run target was always going to be a walk in the park for SRH in a small ground like Sharjah unless RCB inflicted early damage which they failed to do. RCB removed SRH skipper David Warner (8)

early but they needed more wickets upfront to be in the contest. After Warner’s dismissal, Wriddhiman Saha and Manish Pandey (26 off 19) shared 50 runs for the second wicket in quick time to take control of the chase. But some brilliant spin bowling from Yuzvendra Chahal in the middle overs and over cautious batting from SRH gave RCB outside hope. Chahal dismissed

Valtteri Bottas beats Hamilton to Emilia Romagna GP pole IMOLA, OCT 31 (AGENCIES): Valtteri Bottas beat Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton to pole position with his last lap of qualifying at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, reports BBC Sports. The Finn was 0.097 seconds quicker than Hamilton, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen third nearly 0.5secs behind. Alpha Tauri’s Pierre Gasly was a surprise fourth, ahead of Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo and Red Bull’s Alexander Albon. On Sunday Mercedes could win a seventh consecutive constructors’ title. They will do so as long as Red Bull do not out-score them by 34 points. On F1’s first two-day weekend, returning to the Imola track that has not hosted a race since the 2006 San Marino Grand Prix, Hamilton was quickest in the single practice session on Saturday morning and was again on top after the first runs in final qualifying. But a messy lap by Hamilton on the final runs gave Bottas a chance and he grabbed it with both hands. “I really enjoyed it, this track,” Bottas said. “When you push flat out, it’s beautiful. I knew I had to push in the last lap and it’s a great feeling when you get those.”

Valtteri Bottas Hamilton said: “Valtteri did a great job and it was a poor lap from myself. These things happen. You can’t get it right all the time. “What a beautiful place we’re in here in Italy and the speeds we’re going around this track are unbelievable. “I am pretty certain we’re going to see a boring race tomorrow. You can overtake into turn one but it is pretty narrow and you can’t overtake on the rest.” The stand-out performance of qualifying came from Gasly, who was confirmed as an Alpha Tauri driver for 2021 earlier in the week, as the team made a step forward and he lapped just 0.326secs slower than Verstappen in the Red Bull. His result will pile further pressure on Albon, who is under threat of losing his Red Bull drive at the end of the season.

Pandey and Saha and then Kane Williamson (8) was sent back by Isuru Udana to give RCB a ray of hope even though the contest was tilted very much in favour of SRH. Jason Holder played a 10-ball 26-run cameo towards the end to take SRH home comfortably. Earlier, SRH strangled RCB by picking up wickets at regular intervals after opting to bowl. Young Devdutt Padikkal (5) and skipper Virat

Kohli (7) departed in quick succession, falling to Sandeep Sharma (2/20). Sandeep has now dismissed Kohli for a record seven times in IPL. AB de Villiers made a run-a-ball 24 before perishing and then Josh Philippe (32) again got a start but failed to capitalise. He was caught by Manish Pandey off Rashid Khan (1/24) in the next over as RCB slumped to 76 for four in 11.4 overs. RCB were done in

by some incisive bowling from SRH bowlers upfront, resulting in lack of partnerships, which is the vital for any team to post a decent total on the board. RCB’s struggle with the bat can be gauged from the fact that they hit only nine boundaries and a six in their entire innings despite having the likes of Padikkal, Kohli, De Villers and Chris Morris up their ranks. After the early blows, Washington Sundar (21) and Gurkeerat Singh (15 not out) tried to resurrect the innings with a 30-run fifth-wicket stand but they never got the momentum. Towards the end, both Sundar and Morris departed in quick succession to add misery to RCB’s woes. It was clinical performance from SRH bowlers as RCB batsmen struggled to get going after the early dismissals. Jason Holder too shone bright with the ball with figures of 2 for 27 from his four overs.

While Boult (3/21 in 4 overs) dealt telling opening blows, Jasprit Bumrah (3/17 in 4 overs) broke the backbone of the Delhi Capitals middle-order, choking them to 110 for 9. The defending champions coasted to victory in 14.2 overs, taking their points tally to 18 and will have two shots in the playoffs to get into the final. Delhi Capitals, who had won seven out of their first nine games, have now lost four on the bounce and with a match left are in danger of missing out on the play-offs with an ever deteriorating net-run-rate of minus 0.159. While batting, Delhi Capitals consumed 62 dot balls, which effectively meant that more than half of their stipulated 20 overs had gone without scoring. AFI chief warns against doping amid covid Gurugram, Oct 31 (PTI): The Athletics Federation of India on Saturday warned athletes and coaches against using banned drugs by taking advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic and said the country could be suspended if the doping menace continues unabated. AFI President Adille Sumariwalla raised the possibility of more athletes outside the national camp taking to banned drugs and laid a lot of blame on the district and state level coaches. “NADA (National Anti-Doping Agency) is not doing testing now (due to COVID-19 pandemic). But I am telling the athletes and coaches to not think that because of this they can take banned drugs and get away,” Sumariwalla said during AFI’s Annual General Body Meeting here. “These synthetic drugs (athletes might be taking) remain in the body system for a long time, for a year. They (athletes) will be caught, for certain. India is number three in doping cases in the world. India can be banned,” he added. Sumariwalla, who was on Saturday

Adille Sumariwalla

elected unopposed as president for his third and final four-year term, came down hard on the coaches outside national camp, laying blame on them for “intentionally” giving banned drugs to their wards. “Coaches at the district and state level give drugs to their wards and promoting doping. These are government coaches. If their wards do well, these coaches will get financial incentives and they will remain at their home station, will not get transferred. “So, they (coaches) do all these for their own benefit but it is harming Indian athletics. Everyone should be responsible. Please educate the coaches at your districts and states,” Sumariwalla

said, addressing the district and state level officials during the AGM. Sumariwalla admitted that a lot of contaminated food supplements are available in the market and asked the athletes not to buy them from outside the camp. “I am told that the food supplements imported from outside the country might have come clean but I think these are re-packed again in India and these may be contaminated. I am appealing my athletes to be very careful and not buy from outside. Please consult doctors before using these food supplements,” the AFI chief said. “There are centres which are encouraging these kind of things. I think the CBI needs to be involved in these cases.” AFI Planning Commission Chairman and Executive Committee member Lalit Bhanot said the practice of supplying performanceenhancing drugs has become “a full-fledged profession” in the country. “It has become a full-fledged profession. Ek dhanda ho gaya. Coaches are giving medicines and even injections to their wards,”

said Bhanot, who has served as AFI secretary for a long time in the past. He said this “business” involves many people, like compounders and homeopathy degree holders. “Sometime back, I was told by someone that a coach in Bangalore was giving injection to an athlete at a centre there and charging Rs 50,000 while the actual cost was not even Rs 100. “We have to spot these coaches and punish them. We need to root out this menace of doping,” Bhanot, one of the most experienced sports administrators in the country, said. Sumariwalla also brought up the longstanding problem of agefudging by athletes at the age-group events. He said here also coaches are hand in glove with the athletes. “People are bringing false date of birth certificates or are impersonating, the date of births are being changed. Coaches are taking money to change DoB of athletes and taking them to their sports schools,” he said, mentioning such practice in some areas in Maharashtra.

Not for once did Delhi Capitals looked like being in control as they made the Dubai strip and the MI bowling attack look doubly menacing with some of the best batsmen abdicating their responsibilities of playing fearless cricket. Boult was brilliant upfront removing openers Shikhar Dhawan (0) and Prithvi Shaw (10 off 11 balls) in the powerplay which pegged the Delhi Capitals back. C a p t a i n S h r e ya s Iyer (25 off 29 balls) and Rishabh Pant (21 off 24 balls) then compounded their team’s worries as they failed to regain the lost momentum. The duo, for the umpteenth time, looked like playing for themselves and the intent was missing which affected the morale of the batsmen coming down the order. Quinton de Kock effected a ‘MS Dhoni-esque’ stumping off Rahul Chahar to see Iyer’s return to the hut after which came Bumrah’s devastating twoover spell. A ball pitched on length was climbing up while moving a shade aw ay w h i c h M a r c u s Stoinis edged to the wick-

etkeeper. Pant’s misery ended when Bumrah came round the wicket and fired one from wide off the crease that came in with the angle to trap him leg before. He then tormented Harshal Patel, who played and missed a few before being adjudged leg-before, a decision that couldn’t be reviewed as Pant had consumed it during his dismissal. If Delhi Capitals miss out on a play-off berth, Iyer-Pant duo will have to accept their responsibility as premier international players in this DC line-up. Iyer has scored 414 runs in 13 games but mostly coming in at No 3, his strike-rate of less than 125 has left a lot to be desired. Pant has been even worse and with each passing match, his wretched form is perhaps a vindication of Sunil Joshi-led national selection committee’s decision to drop him fro the white ball squads for the Australia tour. In 10 games, he has scored only 274 runs at a below-par strike rate of 112.29 and more importantly failed to score a 50 even when he batted at No. 4 in most of the games.

IPL: Pietersen takes dig at ECB for ‘our lads’ Stokes, Archer

Kevin Pietersen

New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS): Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen took a dig at his country’s cricket board after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) tweeted good luck to England players Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer ahead of their Indian Premier League (IPL) game against Kings XI Punjab on Friday. Both Stokes and Archer are playing for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. “Good luck to our lads in today’s huge IPL game,”

tweeted ECB on Friday. Pietersen replied on twitter, “Just imagine, IMAGINE this tweet 8/9 years ago...! (with laughing emoticons). I’m so happy these guys are benefitting positively from the IPL!” Pietersen had spoken strongly in favour of England players participating in IPL years ago even though the English board was reluctant to let its players play in the IPL and discouraged them. Pietersen also fell out with former England captain Andrew Strauss over the issue.

Pep Guardiola: My time at Barcelona Justin Langer’s revelation upsets India football forward Anju enjoys Cricket Australia: Report working in agriculture field is over, says Manchester City boss

Pep Guardiola is in his fourth year at Manchester City.

MANCHESTER, OCT 31 (AGENCIES): Pep Guardiola insists his time as Barcelona manager is “over” after the Manchester City boss was linked with a return to the Spanish giants. Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font said he would be keen to bring back Guardiola if elected. Guardiola won 14 trophies during his four years at the Nou Camp before departing in 2012.

“As manager of Barcelona my time is over,” said Guardiola. “I lived my period there. [Current Barcelona boss] Ronald Koeman is there, I respect him. He is an incredible friend of mine. It belongs for other people.” Guardiola was speaking after his Manchester City side beat Sheffield United 1-0 in the Premier League. It was City’s third game in a week after a draw at

West Ham was followed by a 3-0 win at Marseille in the Champions League on Tuesday. “We played really well,” added Guardiola. “We struggled to score goals for the chances we created, 16 shots, eight on target, is a lot against this team. “It’s our third game in seven days, all away, it’s so demanding. People have responded to that well.”

New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS): Cricket Australia was left surprised after the Australia men’s team coach Justin Langer mentioned the name of Adam Goodes, a former Australian rules football player, to the media as one of the people the cricket board and team management may consult over possible ways of denouncing racism through on-field messages during India’s tour of Australia. Langer had also mentioned the name of journalist Stan Grant, who had written and partially narrated “The Australian Dream”, a film that explores the racism Goodes suffered during his playing days. A report in the Sydney Morning Herald claimed, “CA is empathetic the pair became the subject of headlines. It said it had intended to address them privately and did not want unnecessary stress and burden placed on them. CA insiders were also surprised Langer publicly referred to Goodes and Grant.”

Justin Langer Australian broadcaster Tracey Holmes, who is Grant’s wife, also criticised Langer for mentioning Goodes’s name to the media without contacting the former Australian rules football player. Langer had made the statement during a chat with the media on Friday morning. “Is this story a little strange? Sounds like Adam Goodes is being asked to front the Australian cricket team to see if he can convince them whether or not there is merit in taking a stand against racism,” Holmes wrote on Twitter.

New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS): While sports activities are yet to get back to normal, India women’s football team forward Anju Tamang, along with her family, is happily wielding the sickle in her agriculture field in the foothills of the Himalayas in Bengal. Anju has a busy schedule during the days as she combines football practice/ training with helping her family out in their paddy fields in the small village of Rangalibazna, south of Darjeeling, in the foothills of the Himalayas in West Bengal. “I used to do this a lot when I was a kid. But that is not so much the case nowadays as I often have to travel to different places for tournaments or matches. But this year, I have got the opportunity [due to the Covid19 pandemic] to come back home during this season, and I’m more than happy to help out in the field,” Anju Tamang said. Agriculture is the family vocation, but Anju opted for a different path - football. Still, whenever she is

In the good old life of the village household, the entire family business is divided amongst the different members of the family. “When it comes to reaping the harvest, it’s the women who do it. So it’s generally my mother and sister-in-law who wield the sickle during the harvesting season. I join them in this activity whenever I am home during this season,” Anju told aiff.com The men of the family are more involved in the work that needs to go in,

after the harvesting of the paddy crop is done. “Once all the crop is harvested, my father and brother get into action, starting the drying process before separating the grains from the plant. Just like football, this is a team effort as well,” said Anju, laughingly. A day in the life of Anju starts early as she sets off for an early morning training session with a few local players. A quick breakfast follows the practice session, before she joins her mother and sister-in-law on the paddy fields.
