The digital surveillance teams and cyber security were on track to identify such offenders, H&FW stated. The department said that testing was also free for whoever falls under the contact tracing list and for symptomatic cases. “All contacts as decided by the surveillance teams are isolated and tested accordingly,” it added. It further went on to point out that among the traced contacts, the most affected age group was 2140 years. “The high positivity rate among the 21-40 years is alarming. The uncontrolled spread among these age groups poses an increased risk in the higher age groups,” the de-

Dr. Jamir reminds Church of its transformational role

This is it!

“Only on Sunday you talk about COVID-19 SOP and remember you’re over 60.” K Y M C

DIMAPUR, OCT 31 (NPN): Veteran Naga politician and former chief minister and governor Dr. S.C. Jamir has reminded the body of Christthe church- about their role in the bringing about transformation to Naga society amidst the present day state of affairs where social evils dominate and where lawlessness abound. In an article, Dr. Jamir said these painted a grim scenario that made Nagaland appear like a ship without a rudder. Against evidence of systematic collapse of all systems in Nagaland, Dr. Jamir asked “should we, the church, remain silent and allow the already volatile situation to degenerate more? Or remain just silent spectators only?” He reminded that decades ago, spiritual leaders of the church had given a clarion call for “Nagaland for Christ” as over 95% of people are Christians. However, Dr.

that the state has been witnessing surge in COVID cases in close contact settings like household, offices, restaurants, prison, church, old age home etc. with household (28%) and offices (23%) being the most common places.

D I MA P U R , O C T 3 1 (NPN): State Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) department, in its weekly report on COVID-19 released on Saturday, once again expressed serious concern that the State was noticing an alarming situation where positive cases are “not naming contacts to the contact tracing teams due to pressure from peers.” While pointing out that contact tracing is a very effective time-tested method to break the transmission of any infectious disease, the department warned that it is a punishable offence under the Epidemic Disease Act if one does not name contacts or come for testing, as they will be directly held responsible for spreading the disease.

D I MA P U R , O C T 3 1 (NPN): In the interest of public safety and to minimize non-essential movement of vehicles in Kohima Municipal areas, deputy commissioner Kohima, Mohammed Ali Shihab informed that the oddeven system of vehicular movement-- private, public transport (taxis and city buses) will continue till November 30 under Kohima Municipal areas, except on Sundays. Odd number day: Vehicle numbers ending with 1, 3, 5, 7 & 9 are allowed to ply on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Even number day: Vehicle numbers ending with 2, 4, 6, 8 & 0 are allowed to ply on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Exempted categories: Press, two-wheelers (without pillion rider), vehicles carrying emergency medical equipments, essential commodities, LPG cylinders and Oil tankers, DC stated in an order. Inter-State trucks carrying essential commodities bound for the state of Manipur. Meanwhile, DC said that all permits/exemptions issued prior to the issue of this order shall stand cancelled with immediate effect.

partment said. The report also stated that percentage of traced contacts among confirmed cases increased from 7% in July to 57% as of October 2020. With October month having reported the maximum number of cases and deaths till date, the department said that Nagaland’s sample positivity rate (9.15%) also continued to remain higher than the national average (7.48%). H&FW said that ICU admissions had also increased five times during the month of October while 15 out of 33 deaths were reported in October alone ( 73% deaths from Dimapur). 60% of all deaths were below 60 years of age with hypertension and diabetes being the most common

associated comorbidities. This is alarming due to the high prevalence of noncommunicable diseases (hypertension, diabetes, heart diseases) in the state, the department stated. The Health department expressed concern

Jamir asked what does Christianity tell us and what are its ideals and principles? Mentioning a chapter in the book of Ecclesiastes, Dr.Jamir said there is a season and time for everything under heaven. He asked was it now not a time to build up? Dr. Jamir said as a “Christian state” to demonstrate in reality, the proclamation of “Nagaland for Christ, ” was it not time to dethrone hatred and coronate love; to destroy hypocrisy and coronate truthfulness; to dethrone violence and coronate love; to dethrone ill-will towards others and coronate compassion in our hearts? Quoting Isaiah 60:1-3, Dr. Jamir went on to remind the church “ Arise, shine, for your light has come and the glory of the Lord is risen upon you” and fervently hoping that “Nagaland will come to God’s light” adding perhaps the time is today. India fully prepared to protect its territory, says Modi KE VAD I A , O C T 3 1 (AGENCIES): Indian soldiers have the power to give a befitting reply to those eyeing the land of the country, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, adding that today India is fully prepared to protect its territorial integrity, sovereignty and honour. “India’s posture and approach at its borders have changed. Our brave soldiers are fully equipped and prepared to give a befitting reply to those who put their evil eyes on us. Security apparatus and infrastructure along our borders are stronger than ever!” Prime Minister said in Gujarat on the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. “The way some forces have openly come in support of terrorism is a global concern for world peace and humanity. nin aerosol has been reported to be tolerated extremely well in influenza patients. Hence, it may have a particular potential to prevent severe Covid-19 disease when applied early after diagnosis,” said study author Martin Michaelis from the University of Kent in the UK. “Aprotinin has previously been shown to inhibit TMPRSS2 gene and has been suggested as a treatment option for influenza viruses and coronaviruses. Herein, we investigated the effects of aprotinin against SARS-CoV-2,” Michaelis added. The findings showed that aprotinin displayed anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity in different cell types (Caco2, Calu-3, and primary bronchial epithelial cell airliquid interface cultures) and against four virus isolates. “An approved aprotinin aerosol may have the potential for the early local

control of SARS-CoV-2 replication and the prevention of Covid-19 progression to a severe, systemic disease,” the study authors noted.

Covid-19 remains public health emergency: WHO World Health Organization (WHO) Emergency Committee on COVID-19 unanimously agreed that the ongoing global pandemic still constituted a public health emergency of international concern. The announcement came after the conclusion of a two-day meeting on Friday, which was convened by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus under the International Health Regulations to review the pandemic situation and progress made on the temporary recommendations, reports Xinhua news agency. ANFPSA serves 10-day ultimatum on govt to release pending bills DIMAPUR, OCT 31 (NPN): Setting a 10-day deadline on the state government to clear all transport and handling charges, the All Nagaland Fair Price Shop Association (ANFPSA) has threatened to launch “democratic forms of agitation” starting from November 11 if the government failed to meet their demands. In a statement, ANFPSA, through its Information Cell, warned that the government would be solely held responsible in the event of any untoward incident during the proposed stir. Expressing dismay with the state government’s lackadaisical attitude towards the Fair Price Shop dealers, ANFPSA demanded to know as to why the sanctioned amount was still kept pending when the amount was already in the department’s account?. It also reminded that the association was kept in the dark over its earlier request to the state government, through director Food & Civil Supplies for early release of the money. ANFPSA claimed that the transportation and handling

Researchers identify new drug to treat COVID patients L O ND O N , O C T 3 1 (IANS): In the continuing fight against the novel Coronavirus, researchers have now identified a drug with the potential to provide treatment for Covid-19 close to a year after it turned into a pandemic. The study, published in the journal Cells, found that the approved protease inhibitor aprotinin displayed activity against SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, in concentrations that are achieved in patients. According to the researchers, aprotinin aerosols are approved in Russia for the treatment of influenza and could be readily tested for the treatment of Covid-19. Aprotinin inhibits the entry of SARS-CoV-2 into host cells and may compensate for the loss of host cell protease inhibitors that are downregulated upon SARSCoV-2 infection. “The aproti-

It provided concrete and targeted advice for WHO and countries to focus on in the coming months, including evidence-informed, riskbased and coherent measures in relation to international traffic; surveillance and contact tracing efforts; maintaining essential health services including mental health services; and preparing plans for future COVID vaccines. The committee also urged countries to avoid politicisation of the pandemic response. “Governments should focus on tackling the virus and avoid politicisation,” Tedros said at a press briefing after the meeting. He called on countries to keep investing in the health system and workforce, and improving testing, tracing and treatment of all cases.

commission dues pending to the Fair Price Shop dealers included backblock of 2018-2019, 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 that will also be due in March 2021. Besides normal food grain distribution to NFSA beneficiaries, ANFPSA said that FPS dealers had also taken up additional responsibility to distribute free ration under various schemes as announced by the Central government from AprilNovember 2020, since the outbreak of COVID-19. Despite all these, ANFPSA said it was surprised by the department and state government’s apathy towards the FPS dealers for the delay in releasing the pending bills even after receiving the amount sanction by the Centre. Meanwhile, ANFPSA has appealed to the beneficiaries and the public to understand and support their genuine cause. It said that the form of agitation has been strategically worked out with the cooperation and support of all the All India Fair Price Shop Dealers’ Federation and its constituent district units.

Delhi records coldest October in 58 years NEW DELHI, OCT 31 (AGENCIES): The month of October was the coldest in 58 years in the national capital, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data. The mean minimum temperature in October this year was 17.2 degrees Celsius, the lowest since 1962, when it was 16.9 degrees Celsius. NPCC alleges poll malpractice DIMAPUR, OCT 31 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K. Therie has warned that the BJP candidate to the 60 PungroKiphire by-election could face disqualification or defeat for violating the electoral laws by using allurements to woo voters. In a statement, Therie made the conclusion based on allegations of wrong doing by the candidate of the rival party adding it was only the tip of the iceberg. He also alleged that besides offering allurements to voters, the BJP allegedly also told voters that “Hindutva is just a propaganda and that it cannot reach Nagaland as we are all Christians.” In his statement, Therie attacked Hindutva as “the ultimate manifesto of BJP”. He alleged that the ideology was responsible for the gruesome killing of Graham Stuart Staines and children because the victims were Christians. Therie also said Hinduvta ideology was sought to be introduced in educational curricula.
