Fire cracker ban:

NGT notice to Nagaland, other states

NEW DELHI, NOV 4 (PTI): The National Green Tribunal Wednesday expanded the ambit of hearing cases on pollution by use of firecrackers beyond the NCR and issued notices to 18 states including Nagaland. A bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice AK Goel noted that it has already issued notice to Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and the state governments of Odisha and Rajasthan have already issued a notification prohibiting the sale/ use of firecrackers. The green panel sought response from Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Uttarakhand and West Bengal. NGT on Wednesday sought response from the Chief Secretaries of 23 states and Union territories on imposition of ban on fire crackers in a bid to protect the health of the vulnerable groups amidst the double whammy of pollution crisis and the Covid pandemic.

day morning, Trump made an appearance at the White House and declared victory against Democratic challenger Joe Biden. “This is a major fraud on our nation. We want the law to be used in a proper manner. So we’ll be going to the U.S. Supreme Court. We want all voting to stop,” he said. The Republican president did not provide any evidence to back up his claim of fraud or detail what litigation he would pursue at the Supreme Court. As of Wednesday afternoon, the election still hung in the balance. A handful of closely contested states could decide the outcome in the coming hours or days, as a large number of mail-in ballots cast amid the coronavirus pandemic appears to have drawn out the process. However, legal experts said that while there could be objections to particular ballots or voting and counting procedures, it was unclear if such disputes would determine the final outcome. Till Wednesday night (IST) Biden had 238 electoral votes and Trump 213. The magic number of electoral votes is 270.

Petrol, diesel prices may soften ahead of Diwali NEW DELHI, NOV 4 (IANS): Petrol and diesel prices may fall marginally ahead of Diwali as oil marketing companies (OMC) are looking to pass some benefit of lower global oil prices to consumers. Sources in PSU oil companies said that a revaluation of pricing structure for petrol and diesel would be taken up this week and even if there is a case for marginal decrease prices it would be done. OMCs in India have been holding on to the retail prices of petrol and diesel for over a month now. Even on Wednesday, the price of two petrol products remained unchanged. With this, petrol prices have now been unchanged for 43 days while diesel prices have been the same as on October 2. While average price of crude for Indian refiners was about $41-41.5 a barrel in September, it stood close to $40 a barrel in October. The prices have fallen further in November that could trigger a reduction in primp price of petrol and diesel.

Arnab remanded to judicial custody MUMBAI, NOV 4 (PTI): Republic TV Editor-inChief Arnab Goswami, arrested on Wednesday for allegedly abetting the suicide of an interior designer, was remanded to judicial custody till Nov 18 by a court here. The court gave the ruling late in the night. Goswami has filed for bail and the court has asked the investigation officer to file reply, the journalist’s lawyer Gaurav Parkar said. In the Alibaug court, police had sought a 14day remand of Goswami, he said. Goswami (47), was picked up by a team of Raigad police from his Mumbai home earlier in the day. He was seen being pushed into the police van and claimed he was assaulted by police before being taken away. “Police arrested Goswami under sections 306 (abetment of suicide), and 34 (acts done by persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code,” a police official said. Soon after the vehicle carrying Goswami reached Alibaug, he was produced in a local court, which directed police to take him to the civil hospital there for medical

check-up, after his lawyer alleged the senior journalist was assaulted by police. “Goswami was produced before a magistrate court in Alibaug where he complained of physical assault at the hands of the police team that barged into his house this morning, Parkar said. The magistrate took note of the allegations and directed the police to take Goswami to the civil hospital for medical check-up. After the medical check-up, Goswami was brought back to the court for hearing on his remand. The architect and his mother committed suicide in 2018 over alleged non-payment of dues by Republic TV, police said. In May this year, Ma-

harashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh announced he has ordered a fresh probe in the case after a complaint by Adnya Naik, daughter of the architect Anvay Naik. Fresh FIRs: Mumbai police have registered fresh FIRs against Arnab Goswami’s, his wife and son for allegedly obstructing the Police officers from performing their duty. They were booked for allegedly assaulting a female Mumbai police cop at his residence when she along with 30-40 other cops barged into his house to arrest Arnab. The FIR also names two unknown persons, a man and a woman, for the same offences, but have not named them. A woman police official, who was part of the team which arrested Goswami from his Lower Parel residence here, filed the complaint, an official said. As per the complaint, Goswami, his wife, son and an unidentified man and a woman tried to obstruct the officials when they were arresting the journalist. Goswami’s wife tore up the arrest intimation papers which the police wanted her to sign, the complaint alleged.

*6 deaths not due to Covid-19 *3 deaths in under investigation

DIMAPUR, NOV 4 (NPN): Nagaland on Wednesday reported 56 COVID positive cases-- 27 in Dimapur, 24 in Kohima, 2 each in Mon and Tuensang and 1 in Phek, taking the tally to 9207 cases. Further, out of 9207 positive cases, the distribution across various categories of people include 3977 cases from the armed forces/ police, 1664 returnees, 3120 traced contacts and 446 frontline workers.

Meanwhile, two more deaths were reported in Kohima on Wednesday. According to health department’s data, the state has so far reported 47 deaths (6 not COVID related and 3 under investigation). India’s tally races past 83 lakh: India’s COVID19 caseload mounted to 83,13,876, while the death toll rose to 1,23,611 after 514 more fatalities were reported.

NEW DELHI, NOV 4 (IANS): The amicus curiae in the plea seeking setting up of special courts to expeditiously try criminal cases against MPs/MLAs submitted before the Supreme Court that criminal cases against sitting legislators must be given priority. Senior advocate Vijay Hansaria, the amicus curiae, apprised the bench comprising Justices N.V. Ramana, Surya Kant and Anirudhha Bose, on various High Courts reports in terms of steps taken, cases pending as well as further plan of action to expeditiously cases against sitting and former MP/MLA. He submitted that criminal cases involving sitting legislators should be prioritised. “They are lawmakers. If they have murder cases pending against them, they shouldn’t be making laws for us. This is in public interest,”

he said. Hansaria added that special public prosecutors must be appointed by the court to take up the cases and emphasised on witness protection. The bench, however, did not agree with Hansaria’s that a direction should be given to the special courts to grant protection to the witnesses in the cases. “There are thousands of witnesses in over four thousand cases against MPs and MLAs and is it possible to grant protection to all?” it asked. The bench has asked the Centre to file an affidavit within two weeks clarifying its stand in the matter. It also noted that the Madras High Court has accepted that it has “committed a mistake” by questioning the constitutional validity of setting up these special courts. On the Madras High Court matter, Hansaria added that raising such an issue

was not correct and there was a special magisterial court in every district of the country since April 2019 to deal with cases against the lawmakers. A three-judge criminal rules committee of the Madras High Court had said: “Special Courts can only be ‘Offence Centric’ and not ‘Offender Centric’. Courts can be constituted only by statute and cannot be constituted by judicial or executive fiats.” The bench said they accepted their mistake, and expect the Madras High Court, no other high courts have no objection with setting up of special courts. Justice Ramana said: “Let’s not side track the issue. We will deal with this aspect later.” The bench added that whatever directions they have passed in this matter must be implemented.

Announce Naga political solution without further delay: NGBF tells Centre D I M A P U R , N OV 4 (NPN): Nagaland Gaonbura Federation (NGBF) has appealed to the government of India to announce the Naga political solution without further delay, stating that the promise of early solution for the last two decades and lapse of one year after conclusion of the formal dialogue has created void and apprehension in the minds of the Nagas. This was among several resolutions adopted by the federation during its annual executive meeting held at Niathu Resort here on Tuesday, NGBF president Shalem Konyak, vice-president Khashito Yeptho and general secretary Shikuto Zalipu stated. Also appealing to NSCN (I-M) to expedite the peace process and join hands for Naga political solution, the forum said it was fully convinced that the

Nagas were fully prepared for a negotiated and honourable political solution, adding that there was no reason to further delay signing of the Indo-Naga political agreement. Further, NGBF said branding all peace and early solution-yearning Nagas, including 14 tribes and other civil society organisations, as traitors and antiNaga was unprecedented and demeaning. The federation asserted that this was uncalled for and strongly

condemned it. Expressing unhappiness at the overt threats and intimidations being issued through the media, NGBF said gaonburas/village chieftains had been at the forefront of peace and diplomatic initiatives with the Centre (GoI) and also among the warring Naga groups since the beginning of the IndoNaga political conflict. Noting that it had been at the receiving end of every side, the forum nevertheless resolved to

work tirelessly to facilitate an honourable settlement of the conflict through political negotiation. Calling for understanding “our own history, our culture and traditions”, NGBF declared that the stand of the gaonburas did not require any “recognition certificate” from anybody. The forum said significance of gaonbura institution in Nagaland had been well documented and recorded even before the

arrival of British, adding ignorant attitude of some people had let them to view them as mere government agents and distorted traditional legacy, besides trying to subdue the legitimate rights of the gaonburas. NFGF declared that, post-solution, it would not tolerate or allow any antipeace elements or forces to take shelter, use violence and issue threats and intimidation to individual Naga leaders, tribal leaders and Naga citizens under any pretext or circumstances in its ancestral and traditional jurisdiction. Warning to confront such threats in Naga soil with active participation of the people, the forum said it would utilise all resources to preserve and maintain peace in “our land”. Observing that the Naga political issue is at the threshold of a new era,

the forum cautioned that loopholes could lead to regret in the future. Therefore, it appealed to Naga political negotiating parties and GoI to abide by what had been declared to the Naga people and translate without delay into reality the October 31, 2019 decision announcement that the negotiations between GoI and both Naga negotiating parties NSCN (I-M) and WC, NNPGs, had been completed. To backtrack from such welldocumented mutual understanding would be a betrayal to the Nagas, it stressed. The meeting further urged security forces to refrain from raids in villages on the pretext of patrolling keeping in view the seriousness of the situation, adding this has created fear psychosis among the innocent public.

IMPHAL, NOV 4: Transporters’ and Drivers’ Council (TDC) Manipur has demanded for the registration of a criminal conspiracy case against the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) over the collapse of a bridge along NH-37 that killed a driver. On November 1 last, a sand loaded tipper truck plunged into the river after a bailey bridge on Irang river along Imphal-Jiribam section of NH-37 collapsed while the truck was crossing through it. The driver of the truck who went missing after the truck fell into the river is still missing even four days. The handyman was however rescued by villagers and CRPF personnel. The search operation launched by a joint team of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to trace the missing driver has also been stalled as the chances of survival of the driver were very. Also, there was strong river current with high water level. The truck is also yet to be fished out from the river

water amid allegations of any of the authorities taking up the repairing work of the bridge along the second lifeline of the state. At the same time, a dead body of an unknown person was found floating on the same Irang River where the truck driver went missing at Guigailong village at the downstream of the same river today. After receiving the information, a police from Noney police station has reportedly rushed to the spot to retrieve the body. Whether the dead body was that of the missing driver or not has not been confirmed till the time of filing this report. Meanwhile, TDC on Wednesday lodged a written complaint to the police with a request for registration of an FIR case under section 304A, 326,337,338, 431 read with section 120-B of IPC against officials of NHIDCL. The sections related to causing death by negligence and punishment for criminal conspiracy. The official handling the maintenance of the in bridge should be punished appropriately under the law, it demanded. The Imphal-Jiribam

A g a r t a l a / Shillong/Guwahati, Nov 4 (IANS): Israeli Ambassador to India, Ron Malka, who is now visiting the northeastern region of the country, is keen to extend his country’s technologies to boost the agriculture and horticulture sectors as well as the information technology (IT) segment of the northeastern states, officials said on Wednesday. After visiting Assam and Meghalaya, the Israeli Ambassador, accompanied by his wife Lea Malka and a delegation, arrived in Agartala on Wednesday and held separate meetings with Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and senior officials led by Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar. A Tripura government official said that the state officials during the meeting apprised the various potential aspects of the state’s agriculture and horticulture sectors and the visiting envoy showed keen interest towards the development of the farming sectors. “During his two-day visit to Tripura, Ron Malka and his delegation would visit the India-Bangladesh bordering areas, an agricultural farm, some tourism places and a museum,” the official told IANS. In Meghalaya, in collaboration with Israel, the state government has proposed to set up two centres of excellence, as part of a project between India and Israel to boost the farmers’

income utilising the latest technology. Accompanied by the Israeli Ambassador, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma told the media in Shillong on Tuesday evening that the Meghalaya government has sought the support of the Central government and Israel for setting up the two centres of excellence in two districts -- East Khasi Hills and East Garo Hills -- at a cost of Rs 10 crore each. “We had proposed to the Centre for setting up two centres of excellence -- at Jongsha in East Khasi Hills for vegetables and at Dawagre in East Garo Hills for citrus fruits,” the Chief Minister said. The visiting Ambassador said that the proposed centres would be in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to double farmers’ income. India in collaboration with Israel is implementing agriculture projects like setting up of centres of excellence in various parts of the country for speedy transfer of technology to the farmers aiming to increase their

productivity and improving the quality of produce. “Partnership with the Israel government would be a ‘gamechanger’ for Meghalaya and its farmers,” Sangma said, adding that technology always plays a very significant role in the growth of agriculture and horticulture. Malka said that Israel would soon send its experts to Meghalaya to build a tailor-made programme for the farmers. He said: “Israel’s relation with India has been growing rapidly and steadily. We are considering introducing a direct flight to northeast India as we want to expand Israel’s presence in the resourceful region.” Before coming to Tripura, Malka visited an 100-acre Tech City, which is under developmen, near the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Inter national Airport in Guwahati on Wednesday. During the visit, Malka requested Assam’s Information Technology and Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta to plan a visit shortly to Israel for exploring the emerging technologies available there. “The Israel government would be happy to provide all the necessary support for any possible collaboration and technology sourcing for establishing manufacturing facility setups and R&D institutions in the state of Assam with potential investors of Israel,” an official release said quoting the envoy.

section of the NH-37 which connects Imphal with other parts of the country via Jiribam remained cut-off after a bridge on the second lifeline of Manipur in Tamenglong district collapsed on November 1 morning. The TDC alleged officials of the NHIDCL were behind the cause of death of the truck driver while alleging that the authority did not care about repair and maintenance of the bridge along the second lifeline of the state. The responsibility of repairing, construction, maintenance and modifying of road, bridges, culverts and drainages along the NH-37 are given to the NHIDCL, an executive agent of the Union ministry of road transport, the TDC maintained in the written complaint. A judgment delivered by the High Court of Manipur on December 17, 2018 had directed officials of the state and union to take appropriate steps to maintain state and national highways properly, the TDC reminded in the written complaint. The officials of NHIDCL responsible for construction and maintenance of NH-37 have however

deliberately neglected maintenance and repair the Irang Bridge, TDC said. The TDC alleged NHIDCL deliberately neglected the bridge with cool calculation and sinister design to gain certain profits by allowing the bridge to collapse regardless of disastrous consequences to public and society as a whole when the bridge collapses. The TDC further informed that the driver of the truck (NL-07A-8937) that plunged into the Irang river identified as Khamba Singh while the rescued handyman Raja Damarie suffered grievous injuries. The deliberate negligence, inaction and failure on the part of the NHIDCL officials was not only the cause of lost of precious life of the driver and grievous injury to the handyman but also endangered life and personal safety of the innocent public of the state in general and in Noney district in particular, the TDC stated. A copy of the written complaint lodged by TDC president H Ranjit Singh was also forwarded to the SP of Noney district for information and necessary action.

an official release of the CMO said. The meeting resolved to take up some new measures to deal with the COVID related issues. Some measures to be taken up are: a Committee formed on COVID related death would monitor the death of Covid and Covid associated patients in hospitals and Covid Care Centres, the release stated. It was also decided that COVID-19 patients with co-morbid conditions would be given antiviral drugs and Oximeters would be distributed to all local Covid awareness and behaviour enforcement committees to check oxygen levels of people with symptoms for early

detection and reporting to the control room for necessary action. Meanwhile, three more people died of COVD-19 and 262 people were diagnosed with the viral infections in the state on Wednesday taking the COVID-19 casualty toll rose to 187 The total number of confirmed cases in the state rose to 19,503. SILCHAR, NOV 4 (PTI): Assam Chief Secretary Jishnu Barua on Wednesday said that central forces are soon arriving in the state for deployment along the interstate border with Mizoram. After the forces arrive “in a day or two”, they would be deployed along the border areas in Cachar and Karimganj districts, Barua told reporters. “When the forces come, there will be peace on both sides (of the border),” he said. The chief secretary directed the Cachar and Karimganj district administration authorities to maintain constant vigil along the interstate border with Mizoram at Lailapur and Medlicherra to “thwart the sinister design of certain forces to disturb peace in the area”.

Appealing to all to show restraint, the Assam chief secretary said, the state government is taking all possible measures to find a peaceful solution to the problem. He termed the prevailing situation on the border front as both a law and order issue as well as a border dispute arising out of claims by Mizoram. “Peace is of paramount importance as you are aware it is an interstate issue...between two different communities and there is no question of not doing it other than through peaceful means. “There is no point in escalating tension...no point in increasing our own problems. We have to work within the four walls of the law,” he said. The chief secretary said that the Assam Government is ‘absolutely clear’ about the “constitutional boundary” of Assam which is clearly defined by the Mizoram Act of 1986. “We are absolutely clear about our constitutional boundary as clearly defined by the Mizoram Act of 1986 when Mizoram was created. “Our official stand is that the constitutional boundary of Assam is sacrosanct and we will stick to that”, he said. Certain elements are playing a major part in “stoking fire”, Barua said.

‘Arnab’s arrest is not revenge politics’ Thankful to police for action against Arnab: Naik’s family MUMBAI, NOV 4 (PTI): The ruling Shiv Sena in Maharashtra on Wednesday dismissed the opposition BJP’s allegations of “politics of revenge” and “muzzling of the press freedom” in the arrest of Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami in a suicide abetment case. While slamming the BJP, Sena minister Anil Parab said Goswami had duped a “Marathi” entrepreneur forcing the latter to commit suicide two years ago. Sena leader Sanjay Raut told reporters the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government of the Sena, NCP and Congress has never acted vindictively against anyone since it came to power last year. He also claimed that the state government or any political party had nothing to do with the arrest. Goswami was arrested in Mumbai by Raigad police on Wednesday morning for allegedly abetting suicide of a 53-year-old interior designer in 2018. “Proper procedure of law is followed in Maharashtra. Police can

nothing to do with the arrest,” the Sena MP said. Taking a swipe at the BJP, Sena spokesperson and state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anil Parab told reporters that Goswami’s name was mentioned in the suicide note written by the interior designer. “The Naik family had moved the court and the case is being investigated. Goswami duped the Marathi entrepreneur Anvay Naik due to which he committed suicide. Earlier, the case wasn’t investigated two years agoas per the contents of the suicide note. “The Naik family then moved court and the probe started. Where does the question of the attack on the freedom of press arise?” he asked. “There is no politics of revenge. The BJP is trying to save Arnab Goswami as if their party worker has been taken away by the police,” Parab said while terming Goswami as the “BJP’s parrot”. “A Marathi woman became a widow...and the case is being investigated. What is wrong in that? Why

take action against anyone if they have evidence. The state government hasn’t acted out of revenge,” Raut told reporters when asked about Goswami’s arrest. “There is no anarchy in Maharashtra and law of the land is followed,” Raut said, adding that Mumbai police is a professional force. “It is not a black day for media. Journalists also should follow ethics. Media is not an investigating agency orcourt. This observation is of the highest court. We are all journalists. Whoever does anything wrong will be punished by the police,” he said. “The state government or any political party has

is the BJP trying to save him (Goswami)? How can it be called as the state of emergency in Maharashtra when a person booked for abetment of suicide is arrested?” he asked. Parab said why was the BJP keeping mum on two other persons who were also named in Naik’s suicide note and arrested. Meanwhile, Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik termed Goswami’s arrest as “Part 2 of India’s Most Wanted” and recalled the action against a TV crime show anchor who was charged with killing his wife. Suhaib Ilyasi, who had shot into limelight after hosting TV crime show India’s Most Wanted was charged with murdering his wife in March 2000. He was, however, acquitted by the Delhi High Court in October 2018. “Once upon a time there was a show called India’s Most Wanted & the Anchor highlighted murders & suicides, the same anchor was held responsible for his wife’s murder, Minority Affairs Minister Malik tweeted without naming Ilyasi.

MUMBAI, NOV 4 (AGENCIES): Soon after Alibag police arrested Editor-inChief of Republic TV Arnab Goswami for abetting the suicide of 53-year interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud Naik in 2018, his wife and daughter Akshata and Adnya Naik thanked the Maharashtra police for taking action in the case, reports Hindustan Times. “We can’t forget the year 2018. We want to thank Maharashtra Police for standing by a daughter of Maharashtra,” Akshata told reporters. “My husband in his suicide note had mentioned three names but no action was taken against them. Arnab Goswami is behind my husband’s death and I request every single Indian not to help him. Maharashtra police’s action is justice for us,” said Akshata Naik. Adnya said, “My father spent his money, energy, blood and sweat on the project. Despite all that, Goswami ensured my father did not get his dues. He continuously threatened my father saying that he will finish

his career and my career.” Adnya also levelled allegations against the former investigating officer in the case Suresh Wadare. “Between February and March 2019 we had gone to Alibag police station to collect my father’s suicide note and chemical analysis report. The investigation officer Suresh Wadare asked us to sign a paper and when we read it we found that they had mentioned a line the paper which read ‘We have filed this complaint to take revenge and now we want to take our case back.’ I remember this line but not

the entire content. After reading the paper, I tried to take a picture of that which the officer opposed and then he tore the page and asked us to leave,” Adnya said. Adnya also alleged that Arnaab was treated with privilege when he did not deserve it. “Why was Arnab given privilege as an accused? Is he some god? His statement was recorded in the joint CP’s office in Mumbai police commissionerate. We met former Mumbai police commissioner Sanjay Barve at that time. We met Anil Paraskar, SP Raigad

several times and also wrote to PMO India. But no one helped us,” She said her father’s case had been closed and she and her mother were not even aware of it. “On my father’s death anniversary on May 5, 2020, we decided to raise our voice for justice and we uploaded some videos. Few days later Republic issued a statement on their Twitter handle saying that police had filed closure report in this case. It is then that we came to know that our case has been closed. The investigation was botched up earlier,” added Adnya. She claimed they had filed four complaints after they started getting threats. “We have filed four complaints in 2020. Two at Murbad and two at Dadar police station after my mother and I started getting threats and people started following us,” said Adnya. When a jour nalist questioned them on which political party has supported them, Akshata said, “We don’t want to make it a political issue. We just want justice and a fair investigation.”

came out with the new map showing Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura as its territories. After Nepal released the map, India reacted sharply, calling it a “unilateral act” and cautioning Kathmandu that such “artificial enlargement” of territorial claims will not be acceptable to it. In June, Nepal’s Parliament approved the new political map of the country featuring areas which India maintains belong to it. India termed as untenable the “artificial enlargement” of territorial claims by the neighbouring country. India said Nepal’s action violates an understanding reached between the two countries to resolve the boundary issues through talks. Nepal Prime Minister Oli has been asserting that Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura belong to Nepal and vowed to “reclaim” them from India.

Kolkata, Nov 4 (PTI): West Bengal BJP Yuva Morcha activists had a scuffle with the police in the city on Wednesday when they were stopped from marching towards Mayo Road to protest against the alleged killing of party activists. The scuffle took place hours before Union Home Minister and top BJP leader Amit Shah arrives in the city on a two-day visit to take stock of the party organsiation ahead of the crucial 2021 West Bengal assembly polls when it will seek to dislodge the 1-year-old Mamata Banerjee government. BJP Yuva Morcha had organized a rally from the party’s state office on Central Avenue to Mayo Road to protest against the alleged killing of more than 120 BJP activists in the state. On being stopped from taking out the rally, the

India’s decision to send the Army chief to Nepal to reset the ties is seen as part of a larger exercise by New Delhi to rejuvenate relations with Myanmar, the Maldives, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Afghanistan in the wake of greater efforts by China to expand its influence in the region. The ties between the two countries came under strain after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated an 80-km-long strategically crucial road connecting the Lipulekh pass with Dharchula in Uttarakhand on May 8. Nepal protested the inauguration of the road claiming that it passed through its territory. Days later, Nepal

Terror theatre

lose on the heels of the October 29 beheading of a woman and killing of three by an Islamic radical, another terror attack took place in Vienna, five days later on November 3, when an Islamic jihadist shot dead four people. These terror attacks are not isolated incidents but mark the spread of radical Islam across the world. Europe and the entire western world are staring at a rising and potential terror attack arising out of Islamic radicalisation. Islamic terror is like the elephant in the room in Europe which has been fighting shy of openly talking about it lest it depicts them of Islamophobia. These killers were from the same country which they chose to immigrate in order to have a better life or escape from their countries where Islam rules under the yoke of Sharia. The jihadist in Vienna – Kujtim Fejzulai was a member of ISIS and born in Austria of north Macedonian citizenship. Like Fejzulai, many Muslims in Europe, around 44 million (6% of the total population), including 19 million (3.8% of the population) in the European Union, do not see themselves as citizens of their countries but as Muslims. In recent years, Europe has experienced a record influx of asylum seekers fleeing conflicts in Syria and other predominantly Muslim countries. This wave of Muslim migrants has prompted debate about immigration and security policies in numerous countries and has raised questions about the current and future number of Muslims in Europe. Muslims are projected to increase as a share of Europe’s population - even with no future migration. The west ensures freedom of religion which has provided the spread of radical Islam. While some in the west are apprehensive of Islamist terrorism, there are those among the liberals who vainly believe that the larger majority are Muslim humanists. The truth is that Muslims comes in a great variety of shapes and size. Many have moved from Muslim countries to Europe to escape Islamic oppression. Some are even negative to Islam. Like in liberal Sweden where Muslims are exerting their exclusiveness, they have their vision of Muslims as an entity separated from the rest of society with other rights and obligations are enthusiastically supported by people to the left in the political spectrum. Western human rights activists protest against laws prohibiting Muslim women to not wear hijab, yet do nothing when Muslim women are hounded for refusing to wear the hijab. It is a paradox as to how a person can loathe and hate the same society which he or she desires to be part of. Europe is battling with this paradox where the first and second generation immigrants from Muslim countries have led to rise in Islamic terrorism. The biggest problem is that the majority of Muslims, who the progressive liberals believe to be moderates, are not raising their voices nor seen to be totally opposing the ideology of Islamic terrorism. There will always been Muslims in Europe as they existed for centuries. It is only due to the influence of Saudi Arabian Wahhabism, a brand of fundamentalist Islam, that has led to the growth of jihadism. Even in this, the west, particularly the USA, should accept blame for propping the Saudi rulers to check the influence of the Russians. It is also not good news that ISIS has told supporters to exploit the disarray caused in western European countries by COVID.

DailyDevotion The Authority of Truth

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. —James 4:8 It is essential that you give people the opportunity to act on the truth of God. The responsibility must be left with the individual— you cannot act for him. It must be his own deliberate act, but the evangelical message should always lead him to action. Refusing to act leaves a person paralyzed, exactly where he was previously. But once he acts, he is never the same. It is the apparent folly of the truth that stands in the way of hundreds who have been convicted by the Spirit of God. Once I press myself into action, I immediately begin to live. Anything less is merely existing. The moments I truly live are the moments when I act with my entire will. When a truth of God is brought home to your soul, never allow it to pass without acting on it internally in your will, not necessarily externally in your physical life. Record it with ink and with blood— work it into your life. The weakest saint who transacts business with Jesus Christ is liberated the second he acts and God’s almighty power is available on his behalf. We come up to the truth of God, confess we are wrong, but go back again. Then we approach it again and turn back, until we finally learn we have no business going back. When we are confronted with such a word of truth from our redeeming Lord, we must move directly to transact business with Him. “Come to Me…” (Matthew 11:28). His word come means “to act.” Yet the last thing we want to do is come. But everyone who does come knows that, at that very moment, the supernatural power of the life of God invades him. The dominating power of the world, the flesh, and the devil is now paralyzed; not by your act, but because your act has joined you to God and tapped you in to His redemptive power.

Post-mortem

Free speech; basic right that empowers marginalised lives I t is a mistake to see free speech as an elite indulgence. It is a basic right that preconditions the realisation of other rights. So basic that it enables the weak and the oppressed to rise against their oppressors. The horrific beheading of the French teacher, Samuel Paty, has once again laid bare the fault lines of free speech. Tabish Khair’s piece (‘Lost in Paris’, IE, October 30) represents one such crack. Khair’s piece is a crying appeal against those who kill in the name of their gods and ideas, to not kill. Do not kill or afflict injury to bodies that bear contrarian ideas, he seems to be saying. And he is right — how can he not be? I also agree with Khair that there is a need to respect people’s religion and not be provocative in the aftermath of the gruesome killing — as the French government as been in asking school teachers to show cartoons in class, or by projecting the cartoons on buildings. I hear him when he says that a competitive exercise of offensive speech may cost lives. But Khair also seems

to be saying something else, albeit in a veiled and guarded manner. He gives the example of the “dedicated French teacher who showed the cartoons to his students in good faith” in the exercise of his free speech. He also gives the example of the “some custodians of [Islamic] religious symbols in France who get outraged” and “post intemperate things on social media”, also in exercise of their free speech. Between the freedom of expression of the French teacher, and the freedom of outraged protestors against it, stands the figure of, as Khair euphemistically calls, an “angry confused man” who is “provoked” into beheading the teacher. To Khair, it does not matter whether ideas are good or bad. What matters is that in the conflict between the two ideas of free speech and sanctity of religio-cultural symbols lives were either lost or made to suffer. It is here that Khair’s perspective becomes conservative in its implications. First, the fact that a barbaric, crazy man can either get offended or inspired by either of the

conflicting ideas cannot be a “free-speecher’s” burden. There are many volatile ideas out there. Should any protest or campaign be mindful of a potential violent twist that may be given to their ideas? Should a causal link between the expression of “offensive ideas” and sufferance of bodies allow violent zealots to hold the right to ransom? Second, unlike what Khair suggests, ideas have no real, independent existence outside of the bodies in which they inhere. Ideas survive only because the bodies in which house themselves do so. Had ideas lived autonomously, independent of the bodies and minds that carry them, ideas would not die. They’d be immortal and live on endlessly outside of their historical times, sociological habitats and changing minds. We would continue to believe that the earth is flat or in the practice of slavery or the absence of voting rights for women. But we don’t. And the reason is that some ideas die or weaken over time. They become anomalous and discredited either because they

are disputed scientifically or because they are contested vigorously and passionately till an anachronistic idea is defeated. Third, in the conflicting terrain of ideas, lies the kernel of social change. If ideas are not “good or bad” as Khair seems to be saying, how else do we discredit the Brahminical divine origin theory that professes that the Shudra is born from the Divine Being’s feet and, therefore, is the lowliest creature on earth? How else, except through a conflict of ideas, do women contest patriarchy and push back on received gendered ideas of womanhood? How else has the idea of “environmentalism” or indigenous communities’ rights become such a dominant concern of our times? Agency to speech may often be a matter of one man’s good versus another man’s good, or one man’s relative truth over another’s. It may be a matter of one cultural value-system (the French and their free-speech principle) versus another religio-cultural sensibility (the sacredness of the Prophet). Till this point,

Moving towards a mix between faith and politics

O

ur world is shifting—could be for better or for worse. Some say, it is moving towards the worse, while others say for better. However, the very mosaic of global order is moving towards diametrically fundamentalist and far-right conservative endswherein far-right politics is basically influencing the young voters. As a result, the far-right fundamentalists subscribing to supremacy of one religion over others employing all sorts of absolutesthat are taking over the governments of countries. On similar lines there are many othersfollow suit. Those belonging to far-right extremist political ideologies converge on many issues, policies and programs. For instance, the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, representing Republican party and the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).Donald Trump used farright conservative evangelicalism as part of his electoral narratives extensively lured a sizable American electorate in his bid four years ago and now deepening the process more persuasively in his re-election campaigns. American evangelicalism is currently functioning on divisiveness that rallies around white supremacy, xenophobic, Islamophobia, anti-immigration and advocates that USA is for the whites alone.Trump has intensified this process by ploughing more yields through his political narratives and manoeuvrings. For example, Franklin Graham, son of wellknown American evangelist late Billy Graham thanked God for electing Donald Trumpreiterating that “God was behind the last election,” inferring God allowed him to win in the election—” God had a hand”. In India, BJP, a far-right political party that rules the country as Modi the Prime Minister, is engaged in divisive politics polarising country on the grounds “majority”versus “minority” pushing for Hindu Rashtra. Everything is premised around their interpretation and those who fail to fall within their constructed rubric and framework are branded as anti-nationals and unpatriotic. They keep twisting and turning India’s plural ethos and cherished values of secularIndia withinclusive values have rather become as antithetical to their notions and conceptions. Trumpian and Modianideological, political and religious conceptions, perceptions and ideological moorings by and large converge. Both belong to far-right fundamentalist political streams and so their religious conceptions underscores polarizationthat believes in vertical divide of the social fabric based on race, caste, class and religious tenets of their respective societies. Their understanding of citizenship though skewed and contradictory to the constitutional provisions and guarantees enshrined, they both tends to push their sectarian and partisan views and standpoints,so that their constituencies are protected and promoted. We have been witnessing how Trump is invoked in the election rallies— “Trump as the protector,

keeper, and guardian of Christian conscience”, who in letter and spirit translates the American evangelical conservatism. The appointment of Supreme Court Justices is the stellar revelation that would decide the controversial issues that looms in the American society for generations. Though the value system he holds is totally flawed and contentious, those who disagree with him are snubbed such as “you are an enemy and cannot be Americans, and so leave America. Those who agree with him are considered as his trustworthy friends. The ways with which Trump and those belonging to right-wing fundamentalism across the continents use narratives that are so dangerous, diabolical, despicable and detrimental. Trump has been considered as “deeply committed person of faith and a good Christian” and so the entire evangelical block voted for him in the year 2016. This block with some minor percentage of his supporters moving away, but many trusts him, because whatever he has promised in the last four years, he did translate such as shifting the embassy of the United States to Jerusalem. He defied COVID-19 saying that “God is with us and so nothing to worry because God is still moving and working in spite of the fact that there have been millions of lives lost, infected and lost jobs. He and his followers by and large have refused to wear face masks and follow physical distancing. He and his wife tested positive and, in the hospital, but the following day he took a drive in his motorcade for some distance to show to his supporters that he could not be contained by coronavirus. He makes mockery of his rivals and ridicules his opponents. His political activism that are evident in such ways that he stood in front of St. John’s Church, near White House with the Bible in his hand for photo opportunity—hurt the Bible and hurts God.Nonetheless, he boasts about him including his supporters say that “nobody has done so much to America than any American”. In India, as mentioned in the BJP Manifesto, the leadership has fulfilled the promise and accordingly started to constructing Ram Temple in the place they claim where Ram was born. We have come across the ways with which the ruling dispensation protected those who ridicule and hurt the religious sentiments of other faith. Similarly,in Israel, ultra-nationalists led byPrime Minister Netanyahu uses Torah to justify his political agenda by annexing and settling the Israelis in the land of Palestine. In recent times, we have been witnessing how religion and politics are being mixed as the farright political parties have insulated the religious tenets in their ideologies to attract the majority of citizens to vote for them. Classic example is a series of incidents happened near Paris in France where a teacher Samuel Paty, who was beheaded for having used cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in a civic class. Very recently, a woman was beheaded and killed two other people at a church in the French city of Nice wherein a knife-wielding attacker shouting “Allahu, Akbar”

(God is the greatest). Condemnation of the attack came from countries in Europe and others while others for example, Erdogan, the President of Turkey criticised French President Macron over displays of the Prophet. On similar lines, Malaysia’s former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad tweeted that Muslims had a right “to kill millions of French people”. Substantiatingfurther, he said that the freedom of expression does not include “insulting other people”. He added that, “irrespective of religion professed, angry people kill. The French in the course of their history has killed millions of people. Many were Muslims. Muslims have a right to be angry and to kill millions of French people for the massacre of the past. By and large the Muslims have not applied the ‘eye for an eye’ law. Muslims don’t. The French shouldn’t.”Our world is moving towards dark terrains because of the fact that fundamentals of religion are forgotten and kept aside. Fundamentalism of religion is on the rise insulating itself in the political ideologiesto advance theirfundamentalist political agenda. Rhetoric and narratives emerge such as ‘multiculturalism is dead’, ‘white nationalism is inevitable’, ‘majoritarianism is the reality’, ‘those belonging to other than majority religion be treated as ‘second class citizens’ and ‘their citizenship is doubtful’. Nowadays citizenship, nationality, patriotism and one’s residency are determined by race, caste, class, ideology and host of others. The levels of debates, electioneering, narratives and slogans have hit the lowest and national political leaders lost basic etiquettes. Their discourses on issues are filled with blatant lies and heightened exaggeration. Speeches are so toxic, spewing venom and hatred against those who disagree to their political agenda and vision. Fundamentals of religion echoes wholeness of life, mutual co-habitation, inclusiveness, neighbourliness, respect to each other, preservation and promotion life, hospitability, just peace and so on. The far-right conservatism is premised on principles that are contrarian to the fundamentals of religion. The world we live has been reduced to building walls, separating parents from children, curbing the freedom of movement, betraying the constitutional rights and provisions of the minorities. The credo of majoritarianismenmeshed in such ways that those from other religion have been asked or intimidated to leave the country they belong to. Coronavirus (COVID-19) has certainly countered and straitjacketed populism right across as the populists failed to address the adverse impact of the deadly pandemic that resulted in the death of millions of people and many millions are being affected by it. Populism is waning as it failed to accommodate compassion and accountability of the leaders. However, populism and populists loom at large and thereforeneeds to be countered and resisted with alternative narratives, theorical analysis and pragmatic actions within the framework of the constitution. Dr. John Mohan Razu

both speech-acts (or ideas) have equivalence and each person must have the right to speak freely. But once you kill or inflict bodily harm in the name of an idea, the onus and responsibility of it is not on the people professing or countering an idea. So that we don’t offend a loony guy who picks up a gun and shoots, or so that we don’t inspire a crazy man to behead someone in the name of ideas, must we dispense with expressing the idea itself ? It is borderline dangerous to make such a suggestion, no matter how obliquely. Freedom of speech and expression may have been an Enlightenment, coloniser’s project and may actually continue to be so, sanctioning Islamophobia, racism and ideas of cultural superiority. But to belabour the point outside of its context is to miss two points. First, as LebaneseAustralian academic Ghassan Hage summed up in his Facebook post: Truth also needs to have its ethics. You may be truthful, but unethical. The beheading of Paty requires us to dwell on not just any

killing but the bone-chilling barbarism behind it. To dwell instead on the genealogies and causes of violent behaviour is bad ethics, for it ends up being nothing more than an apologia for violence. Second, it’s bad politics. The right to free speech empowers and enables many marginalised lives. It is a mistake to see it as an elite indulgence. It is a basic right that preconditions the realisation of other rights. So basic that it enables the weak and the oppressed to rise against their oppressors. It enables culturally disparate communities, including Muslims, to embody and carry with pride their cultural differences. In any case, free speech is restrained by the state through its many criteria of “reasonableness”. To further circumscribe it by burdening it with plausible violent appropriations, or with historical conditionalities, is to feed the logic of violence against freedom of expression. Lucifer and the pope

“N

agaland identifies 5315 sex workers… Supreme court directs states to provide ration to sex workers…” (Nagaland Post, Eastern Mirror news; October 29th). Pope Francis recently said “Gay people have the right to be in the family they are children of God, they have right to family. No one can be thrown out of the family or make life impossible for that. What we to do is a civil co existence law. They have the right to be covered legally”. The supreme court of India is not promoting prostitution by asking the prostitutes be provided with livelihood by the state. Similarly, the Pope is not legalizing homosexuality when he said that they have right to be covered legally. If some Christians felt that the Pope is a brother or Lucifer, they should also remember ‘I came not to call the vitreous, but sinners to repentance” (Lk.5.32). Pope Francis has been proposing a civil co existence law to protect the homosexual people from mistreatment and social rejection in their own family circles. He has been defending the dignity of the individuals and is proposing civil laws to protect homosexualsfrom abuse in their own family environments, which are often rejected by their won parents, siblings and relatives. Historically the Pope has opposed efforts to inscribe same-sex marriage in law. And he still does. The idea of civil unions for same-sex couples is intended by Francis as a compromise: one that makes room for LGBT people to enjoy some protection of the law without damaging the theological integrity of marriage. The news of Pope Francis’ ‘endorsement’ of civil unions for same-sex couples in the new documentary “Francesco” has taken the Catholic world by storm. Progressive Catholics have applauded the remarks; the conservative Catholics, especially in Poland and some of the African countries have decried it as a break with official church teaching and a tacit approval of sexual immorality.

Francis’ is proposing distinction between canonical marriage and civil unions. The law, he said, exists for the sake of the common good, and so it should only permit or forbid things in light of their effect on the good of the whole community. Thus, there is any number of evidently immoral activities or styles of life that ought to be permitted by the law, or perhaps even protected, so long as doing so conduces to the common good, like prostitution as an immoral activity, making of an atom bomb, capital punishment etc., the law may not forbid. To quote an example from Nagaland is the NLTP act and treatment for alcoholics/drug users. If possession and use of drugs is punishable by law, all alcoholics and addicts should be jailed. We do not put them behind bars but treat them, because the law also accepts that addiction is a biological orientation. No one begins to drink to beat up his wife or die of liver cirrhosis. Most homosexuals are such, not by choice but by genetic makeup. (Mat.19.12). This is a call for the church to understand and accept that a most homosexuals/transgender are people who have gender identity or gender expression that differs from the sex that they are born with. They are struggling to find a place in the church and in the society that brands them are sinners. Pope Francis has been time and again emphasizing compassion and mercy as the cornerstone of Christian ministry. The “throwaway culture” against which Francis so fiercely preaches invades the very heart of the church when Christian parents, for purportedly Christian reasons, discard their LGBT children as broken, polluted things… Young people, made to believe that they are unworthy of family, are turned out onto the streets where they are exposed to the violence of poverty, drug use and sexual assault, while trying to survive, often through sex work. Sir,

And the world will triumph

Who cares if Trump or Biden wins? Who cares about the election happening half way across the world? All I do know from the media, be it foreign or Indian, is that Trump is orange-man-bad and the way he talks is distasteful. Trump should clearly not be president because he is a racist person and the worst U.S. president ever. These are the words we hear and see constantly on our social media and on TV. While the media has a bigger and greater influence than I do, it certainly is not the basis for my moral compass and it did not change my perspective on Trump. A man of courage and dedication, Donald Trump espouse values that I uphold as a Christian. A beacon of light, Donald J. Trump is a staunch pro-life in a western world where most leaders are liberal and are pro-choice. He is a champion of hope for religious liberty across the world and is brave enough to call out nations that oppress its religious people. From recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel to making historic peace deals in the Middle East between Israel and several other Arab nations, President Donald Trump has set a legacy unparalleled and will be read in history books as one of the greatest peacemaker. Back in 2016, Donald Trump beat the establishment, the media, the pollsters and the democrats and they have not forgiven him for that. For 3 years they ran the Russia hoax and they impeached Trump for no reason, but in doing so they showed the world the hate for him and for what he stands. The man stands for peace, life, religion, free market and free speech and that is what I stand for too. America and the world will triumph when Trump is re-elected as the leader of the free world. Punjab CM stages dharna against farm laws

New Delhi, Nov 4 (PTI): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday launched a dharna here to protest against the Centre’s new farm legislation and accused the BJP-led government of meting out “step-motherly” treatment towards the state. He said the farmer’s agitation in Punjab against the new farm laws could lead to “serious consequences” for national security and alleged that China and Pakistan were seeking to disturb peace in the country’s border state. Stressing that his intention was not to disturb peace, Singh said he was trying to “save” his state’s farmers as the Centre was “playing with” their livelihoods. Addressing the dharna, which was shifted to Jantar Mantar from Rajghat after Section 144 CrPC (Prohibiting assembly of four or more persons) was imposed there, Singh hit out at the Centre saying it was not cooperating with the state authorities to end the rail and road blockade which was hurting Punjab’s interests. “What do you gain by replacing one system with another system that cannot work in Punjab. Nobody is stopping anyone from buying from farmers, but do not

‘MVM’ or ‘Modi ji’s media’, not scared Rahul Gandhi Araria (Bihar), Nov 4 (PTI): Describing electronic voting machine as ‘Modi Voting Machine’ (MVM), Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said he is not scared of “Modi Voting Machine or Modi ji’s media”. Addressing an election rally here, he said, “Whether it’s Modi Voting Machine or Modi ji ka Media (Modi ji’s media), I am not scared of them. “Truth is truth, justice is justice. I am fighting a war of ideology against this man. We are fighting against their thoughts. We will defeat their thoughts,” he said. Without mentioning any particular incident, Gandhi said, “Narendra Modi says unpleasant things about me in his meetings. However, much hatred they try to spread, I always try to spread love. Hatred cannot defeat hatred, only love can. I won’t budge an inch until I defeat Narendra Modi.” Earlier in the day, he addressed a rally at Madhepura.

disturb the existing system that is working fine,” Singh said. “My ministers are in dialogue with farmer unions and are trying to convince them. There are two things that no ruler should tinker with - one is religion and the other is livelihood. Don’t touch religion and livelihood as agitations take place when you tinker with them,” he said. All Congress MLAs and MPs from Punjab sat on a dharna along with the chief minister, who was also joined by Lok Insaaf Party legislator Simranjit Singh Bains, Punjabi Ekta Party MLA Sukhpal Khaira and Shiromani Akali Dal (Democratic) MLA Parminder Singh Dhindsa. Asserting that “we are here not to disturb peace

but to preserve it”, the chief minister said he was in Delhi not to confront the Centre but to fight for justice for the poor farmers whose livelihood was at stake due to the central farm laws. Singh said he and other MLAs from Punjab were compelled to come to Delhi as the President had declined their request for a meeting on the plea that the state amendment Bills were still lying with the Governor. He said he knew the Governor had still not forwarded the Bills even though he had no role to play in the matter, and said he had wanted to meet the President as it was his duty to apprise the head of the country about the state of national security and food security in Punjab. As far as the state’s

People of Bihar prefer politics of ‘good governance’: PM

New Delhi, Nov 4 (PTI): Asserting that the people of Bihar prefer “sushashan ki rajneeti” (politics of good governance), Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said only the NDA can provide security, employment and new opportunities of selfemployment to the youth of the state. He also said that the youth and women of the state have always been with the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) and they see hope in the alliance. In a series of tweets in Hindi, Modi said he had the opportunity to meet his “brothers and sisters” of Bihar and seek their blessings during his election rallies in the state over the past few days. “From the first rally in Sasaram to the last rally in Saharsa, the public gave a lot of love,” Modi said. Bihar has always considered the values of democracy supreme and, therefore, the people of Bihar only like “sushashan ki rajneeti” (politics of good governance). Talking about the NDA campaign rallies for the Bihar assembly polls, he said there was a commonality which was a high level of

Narendra Modi

participation by the youth and the women. If the NDA is continuously winning, it is because of their support, he said. “It is their blessing that gives us the energy to work continuously. The youth and women of Bihar see hope in the NDA,” he asserted. “In Aatmanirbhar Bihar, our goal is to maintain rule of law and to ensure the welfare of poor,” the prime minister said. Modi’s comments follow a series of rallies addressed by him, including some on Tuesday. While the first two phases of voting have taken place for the ongoing Bihar assembly polls, the third and the final phase will be held on November 7, followed by counting of votes for all 243 assembly seats on November 10.

Bills were concerned, he expressed the hope that the President will give full assent to them, following the precedent of former President Pranab Mukherjee who had assented the Bills passed by BJP-ruled states under Article 254-II (on law made by state legislature receiving President’s assent) on the suggestion of former Union minister Arun Jaitley. He reiterated his warning that any move by any government to tinker with religion or livelihood of the people was bound to trigger resentment and anger and said farmers were protesting as the new central laws will destroy them and snatch their livelihoods. The chief minister warned that failure to resolve the issues of the farmers would lead to unrest, as both China and Pakistan would try to exploit the situation to the detriment of national security. He said there was threat at the borders with Pakistan which tried to carry out smuggling of drugs and weapons for terrorists and gangsters into Punjab through drones every day. “If trouble erupts in Punjab, the entire nation’s security would be at stake”, he said. Highlighting the crisis faced by Punjab due to the

decision of the Railways not to ply goods trains in the state, the Chief Minister said contrary to the misinformation being spread, tracks were currently blocked at only two places which were off the main lines and connected to two private power plants. He claimed the farmers are fighting against the corporates and thus were not allowing supplies on these two tracks, adding that all the other lines were open. He said he had spoken to Railway Minster Piyush Goyal and even assured him that the Punjab Police would help the RPF maintain security at the stations and along the tracks to allow goods trains. Questioning the rationale behind the Centre’s refusal to allow trains to ply in Punjab, Singh said this decision was obstructing movement of essential supplies not just in Punjab, which had run out of coal and power, storage for foodgrains and fertiliser, but also to other states, including the armed forces in Ladakh and Kashmir. Singh also alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party had been “pressured” not to join the dharna as its government in Delhi had not passed amendment bills to protect farmers.

7 Enhanced version Security beefed at IGI airport of Pinaka rocket after pro-Khalistan threat system test-fired BALASORE (ODISHA) NOV 4 (PTI): An enhanced version of Pinaka rocket system was successfully test fired from the Integrated Test Range in Odishas Balasore district on Wednesday, official sources said. S i x r o c k e t s we r e launched in quick succession and the test met complete mission objectives, defence sources said. This enhanced version would replace the existing Pinaka Mk1 rockets which are currently under production. The rocket has a state-of-the-art guidance navigation and control system with which it has become efficient to identify its target and hit it. Development of the enhanced Pinaka system was taken up to achieve longer range performance compared to the earlier designs with reduced length. The design and development has been carried out by Pune-based DRDO labortaries, Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, they said.

IGI Airport in Delhi

New Delhi, Nov 4 (PTI): Security has been beefed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport after a banned proKhalistan outfit, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), threatened to disrupt two Air India flights scheduled to leave for London on November 5, police said on Wednesday. The US-based SFJ has issued a call to boycott Air India flights and urged the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots to occupy the airport to “internationalise” the issue, they said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGI Airport) Rajeev Ranjan said, “We have tightened security arrangements after we received inputs that Sikhs for Justice has threatened to disrupt operations of two Air India flights scheduled for London tomorrow.”

“Even though the airport is a secure place, based on the inputs we received, we have made adequate security arrangements for the safety of passengers,” he said. A meeting was also held with officials of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Air India and Delhi International Airport Limited on Wednesday to discuss the massive security arrangements put in place, a senior police officer said. Similarly, a meeting was held on Tuesday in this regard by CISF officials. Delhi Police officials also attended the meeting, he said. SFJ, which has been pushing for Sikh Referendum 2020 as part of its separatist agenda, was banned by the government for its alleged anti-national activities.

CAA to be given priority before Bengal polls: Vijayvargiya Kolkata, Nov 4 (PTI): Setting his sights on 2021 Bengal polls, BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya has said citizenship law implementation will get priority ahead of the elections, as both his party and the Centre were keen on ending the woes of the state’s refugee population. Asserting that free and fair polls were not possible without the imposition of President’s Rule in the state, Vijayvargiya, who is the BJP’s Bengal minder, stated that the party, however, is unlikely to raise the matter during Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s twoday visit from November 5. The state unit, nevertheless, would convey its grievances over the recent “political killings” in Bengal and the “politicisation and criminalisation” of some police officers, Vijayvargiya maintained. Noting that “the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise was not up for discussion and consideration” as ofnow, he said the BJP, at the moment, is looking forward to granting citizenship to the persecuted refugees from neighbouring countries.

“Our (central) government has passed the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) with an honest intention to grant citizenship to the persecuted refugees who have come to our country from the neighbouring nations. But there have been a few petitions against the CAA in the court. “We are hopeful that as and when the (pandemic) situation normalises, there would be a decision. We would try to prioritise CAA implementation before elections in Bengal,” Vijayvargiya told PTI in an interview. Resentment has been brewing among a section of the Matua community people, who have migrated to the state from Bangladesh, over the delay in the implementation of the CAA. BJP MP Santanu Thakur had recently said he would write to Shah requesting him to quickly implement the law in Bengal to ensure that people from the politically crucial Matua community, of which he is a part, get citizenship rights. The BJP leadership is apprehensive that the delay and confusion over CAA implementation might turn refugee voters, especially those from the Matua com-

munity, against the BJP in the Assembly elections, even though they had voted hands down in favour of the saffron camp in 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Matuas had been migrating to West Bengal since the 1950s, mostly due to religious persecution. The community, with an estimated population of three million in the state, influences at least four Lok Sabha seats and 30-40 assembly seats in Nadia, North and South 24 Parganas districts.

According to state BJP sources, the CAA will benefit more than 1.5 crore people across the country, including over 72 lakh in the West Bengal. Referring to the recent attack on Hindu homes in Bangladesh, Vijayvargiya said the CAA was enacted to help persecuted minorities in that country as well as Pakistan. Ta l k in g a b o u t t he “worsening” law and order situation in West Bengal, Vijayvargiya said, “Free and

fair assembly polls next year will be impossible without the imposition of President’s Rule and asserted that Election Commission needs to ensure people can exercise their rights without hassle.” “However, we won’t be demanding President’s Rule this time when we meet the Union home minister. We would apprise him of the political killings, complain about certain officers involved in illegal activities in the bordering areas.”

New Delhi, Nov 4 (PTI): Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said “Pusa bio-decomposer” was successful in Delhi and the city government will inform the Supreme Court that it is an effective way to prevent stubble burning. Delhi has found a cheap solution to the problem of crop residue burning and “no state can now make any excuse”, he told reporters in Hiranki village in north Delhi. Pusa bio-decomposer is a solution developed by the scientists at Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Pusa, which can turn crop residue into manure in 15 to 20 days and therefore, can prevent stubble burning. The ‘Pusa bio-decomposer’ was sprayed free of cost in non-basmati rice fields in Hiranki village in Narela. Pusa bio-decomposer has been successful. It has completely decomposed the stubble and turned it into manure. Farmers can now start sowing next crop in the fields, he said. The chief minister said that neighbouring states,

where stubble burning is prevalent, should implement the alternative without any excuses. “We are going to tell the Supreme Court, too, that it is a cheap and effective way to prevent stubble burning,” he said. “Delhi has given a solution to other states. No government can make an excuse that they have no alternative to the problem of stubble burning. We have sprayed the solution across Delhi in just Rs 20 lakh,” he said. Kejriwal said he had earlier talked to Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar over phone about Pusa bio-decomposer. “He (Javadekar) said it will be used in other states the next time if the experiment was successful in Delhi,” the chief minister said. Environment Minister Gopal Rai said, “In Delhi, 40 per cent of the pollution happens due to stubble burning in neighbouring states. This year also, the spike in pollution is due to the massive stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana.”

‘India to reach pre-Covid levels by March, 2021’ Amway scales up digital capabilities

New Delhi, Nov 4 (IANS): With economic activities gaining momentum, India is poised to recover fast and may reach the pre-Covid levels of economic parameters by the current financial year’s (FY21) end, according to a report by the Department of Economic Affairs. The Monthly Economic Review for October, however, noted that the recovery may get impacted if the second wave of novel coronavirus infection gets triggered. “India stands poised to recover at a fast pace and reach pre-Covid levels by the end of the year barring the incidence of a second wave that may be triggered by the fatigue with social distancing. The continuous improvement in forward looking RBI indices of consumption and business sentiment for the next year augurs hope of a strong economic rebound,” it said. It noted that that the growth prospect for the Indian economy is also corroborated by the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) October 2020 pro-

jection of 8.8 per cent real GDP growth of India in FY 2021-22, highest among its global counterparts. The report noted that a steady contraction of active Covid-19 cases and a low case fatality rate has instilled measured optimism in India that the worst is behind now. At the same time, a second wave of the pandemic in advanced nations is a grim reminder of how reality hits back when caution is compromised, it added. Movement of high frequency indicators in October clearly point towards broad based resurgence of economic activity, notably in healthy kharif output, power consumption, rail freight, auto sales, vehicle registrations, highway toll collections, e-way bills, rebound in GST collections and record digital transactions. Rural consumption has stayed strong, in part helped by sustained MSP procurement of food grains by government at higher prices. Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index rose from 56.8 in Septem-

ber to 58.9 in October, pointing to the strongest improvement in the health of the sector in over a decade. PMI Services index also rose to 54.1 in October, ending the seven-month sequence of contraction, signalling improved market conditions. With the onset of the festive season, overall consumption is expected to see further uptick in the coming months enhancing prospects of faster economic normalisation. Meanwhile, Ease in Covid-19 restrictions, along with fresh demand, lifted India’s service sector output October. The seasonally adjusted India Services Business Activity Index showed an increase that ended a seven month sequence of reduction. The index rose to 54.1 in October, up from 49.8 in September. Besides, the seasonally adjusted business activity index posted above the 50 (index reading) no-change mark the first time since February. An index reading above 50 indicates an over-

all increase compared to the previous month, and below points to an overall decrease. “The latest reading pointed to a solid rate of growth in output that was stronger than its long-run average,” the IHS Markit report said. As per the report, panel members said the upturn was supported by improved market conditions amid the loosening of Covid-19 restrictions. Furthermore, the survey report said that October recorded the strongest increase in private sector output in close to nine years. “A sharp rise in factory production was accompanied by a return to growth of services activity,” the report said. The Composite PMI Output Index rose from 54.6 in September to 58 in October. “Aggregate new orders expanded for the second straight month in October, with the rate of growth accelerating to the highest since January 2013. “New business at manufacturing firms increased at

a quicker pace than at their services counterparts.” However, companies in both the manufacturing and the service sectors recorded lower payroll numbers at the start of the third quarter of fiscal year 2020-21. As a result, the report pointed out that private sector employment declined for the eighth straight month. According to Pollyanna De Lima, Economics Associate Director at IHS Markit: “It’s encouraging to see the Indian service sector joining its manufacturing counterpart and posting a recovery in economic conditions from the steep deteriorations caused by the Covid-19 pandemic earlier in the year.” “While a revival of the manufacturing industry began in August, only now the service sector started to heal. Service providers signalled solid expansions in new work and business activity during October. They were also more upbeat about the outlook, though hopes of output growth in the year ahead were pinned on a Covid-19 vaccine.”

trial Research (CSIR) and the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI). “The NEERI claims that the emission levels have gone down by 30 per cent. If that is the case, why should the firecrackers be banned?” the manufacturers questioned. “There are many festivals in India for which people buy new clothes, do special puja, make sweets at home, and greet friends. Diwali is only national festival where firecrackers are used,” Tamil TANFAMA President Ganesan Panjurajan earlier told IANS. Manufacturers are also aggrieved that some of the major political parties in Tamil Nadu have failed to espouse their cause. “It was only Nirmala Sitharaman, when she was the Union Commerce Minister, who took active interest in matters concerning us, like ban on import of Chinese firecrackers and reduction of Goods and Service Tax,” Asaithambi said. Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district in Tamil Nadu accounts for nearly 90 per cent of the country’s firecracker production, and has 1,070 firecracker units located in and around the city.

time around, he added. “If sales are banned, then our payments from wholesale dealers will take time to be realised, which in turn will impact our loan repayments and payments to our raw material suppliers,” Asaithambi rued. More important is the livelihood issue for several lakh workers due to reduced or total stop on production of firecrackers as dealers/ retailers will be saddled with unsold stocks that they may carry over to the next Diwali. Industry stakeholders told IANS that owing to lockdown and other uncertainties the production of firecrackers this year was cut by 35 per cent. “Till now, firecracker sales is good in states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala and others,” Rajendra Raja, Vice-President, Indian Fireworks Manufacturers’ Association, told IANS. CHENNAI, NOV 4 (IANS): Already faced with reduced production owing to coronavirus pandemic, firecracker manufacturing industry in Tamil Nadu’s Sivakasi is now more worried about its future prospects as states like Rajasthan, Odisha and West Bengal have banned sale of firecrackers owing to the pandemic. They pointed out that not only their loan repayments and other transactions would be affected, but also the livelihood of lakhs of workers involved in the manufacturing process was under threat. The industry players and common people are of the view that Diwali festival is being “targeted by vested interests”. “There has been a consistent attack on the industry for a long time on one or the other pretext. Diwali is one festival that is celebrated across the country and Sivakasi’s firecrackers provide a reason for the people to celebrate,” former Tamil Nadu Fireworks and Amorces Manufacturers Association (TANFAMA) President T Asaithambi told IANS. He said that for the past two years, the industry was bogged down by the issue of manufacturing ‘green crackers’ that emit less smoke. The National Green Tribunal too wants firecrackers to be banned this

Vienna terror attack: Police begin probe

After a shooting armed police officers patrol on a street at the scene in Vienna, Austria, Tuesday.

VIENNA, NOV 4 (AGENCIES): Life in Vienna returned to something like normal Wednesday as Austrian authorities investigated whether a 20-year-old man who fatally shot four people in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group had any accomplices. Officials say the suspect, identified as 20-yearold Kujtim Fejzulai, had a previous conviction for trying to join the Islamic State group in Syria and had been released in December. He wounded more than 20 people in nine minutes before he was killed by police on Monday night. Much of the capital remained shut down well into Tuesday, with authorities saying only in the afternoon that they hadn’t yet found

any evidence of a second assailant. Schools reopened on Wednesday. “Today ever ything seems to be back to normal, but of course the mood is a quite gloomy, as you can understand after such an incident,” Vienna resident Roman Schulz, 21, said. “But I think we must stick together in Vienna. We must not let our joy of life be taken away from us.” Two men and two women died from their injuries after the attacker, who was armed with a fake explosive vest, an automatic rifle, a handgun and a machete, opened fire at people sitting in crowded bars and cafes hours before the establishments were closed under new coronavirus restrictions.

Authorities didn’t immediately give any new information Wednesday on the investigation. Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said Tuesday that 14 people associated with Fejzulai had been detained in Austria and were being questioned. Police in the Swiss city of Winterthur said Tuesday two men were arrested there. Swiss daily St. Galler Tagblatt reported that Swiss Justice Minister Karin Keller-Sutter described them as “colleagues” of the attacker. In Slovakia, police responded to reports that the suspect had traveled there in July to buy ammunition. They said on Facebook that they received information during the summer about “suspected persons from Austria” trying to buy ammunition. “They failed to make the purchase,” the Slovakian police statement said, without elaborating. “We immediately sent the information to our Austrian colleagues.” The Islamic State group claimed credit for the Vienna attack. The claim of responsibility was published through the militant group’s media arm, Aamaq.

Questions mount over tracking gunman

Kujtim Fejzulai, 20, posted the photograph on his Instagram account.

Questions were mounting in Austria on Wednesday about how a convicted Islamic State sympathiser was able to carry out the deadly gun rampage in the heart of the capital Vienna. Investigators are trying to piece together more information about the gunman’s circle after detaining 14 people in the wake of Monday’s shooting, the first major attack in Austria for decades and the first blamed on a jihadist. Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has described the decision to release Fejzulai -- who was shot dead by police on Monday evening -- as “definitely wrong”. “If he had not been released then the terror attack would not have been possible,” Kurz told public broadcaster ORF on Tuesday. Austria’s top security chief Franz Ruf told local

media that at his last session of a publicly-funded deradicalisation programme in late October, Fejzulai had condemned the recent jihadist attacks in France. Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said Tuesday the attacker had successfully “fooled” the programmes in order to achieve his early release. Nehammer said his case had shown up a “fracture” in the system and that raids at Fejzulai’s home after the attack revealed plentiful evidence of his radical views. He referred to a Facebook post in which Fejzulai posed with the Kalashnikov and the machete he would go on to use in the attack, together with IS slogans. “Nobody would have thought him capable of something like this,” Nikolaus Rast, the lawyer who represented Fejzulai last year, told AFP on Wednesday. He also raised questions about possible oversights by the de-radicalisation programmes Fejzulai had attended. “Without wanting to put the blame on someone, if they are the experts, why didn’t they notice anything?” Rast said.

World waits nervously and impatiently for US vote count WASHINGTON, NOV 4 (AP): From Ford Model T cars that popped off the assembly line in just 90 minutes to 60-second service for burgers, the United States has had a major hand in making the world a frenetic and impatient place, primed and hungry for instant gratification. So waking up to the news on Wednesday that the winner of the US election might not be known for hours, days or weeks — pundits filled global airwaves with their best guesses — came as a shock to a planet weaned on that most American of exports: speed. ‘’We have to have a little patience, almost certainly a lot of patience,” said the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, as the nail-biting contest for the White House increasingly focused on three states — Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania — that could prove crucial in determining whether President Donald Trump or challenger Joe Biden wins. “In the American system, the last vote counts, and maybe the last vote changes the result,” Borrell told Spanish National

Television. But as world leaders generally refrained from commenting on the outcome until it was clear, the particularly fractious and contested nature of the vote was already sparking concerns overseas that the superpower’s sharp divisions and internal conflicts exposed by the election might endure long after the winner is declared. “The battle over the legitimacy of the result — whatever it will look like — has now begun,” said the German defence minister, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer. “This is a very explosive situation. It is a situation of which experts rightly

say it could lead to a constitutional crisis in the US,” she said on ZDF television. “That is something that must certainly worry us very much.” In financial markets, investors struggled to make sense of it all, sending some indexes up and others down. Overall, uncertainty ruled. In the vacuum of no immediate winner, there was some gloating from Russia, Africa and other parts of the world that have repeatedly been on the receiving end of US criticism, with claims that the election and the vote count were exposing the imperfections of American democracy.

China vows ‘proper’ response Ethiopia nears war as PM orders military into defiant region to US arms sale to Taiwan BEIJING, NOV 4 (AP): China vowed Wednesday that it will make a “proper and necessary response” if the US proceeds with its latest planned arms sale to Taiwan. Foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said the sale of USD 600 million in armed drones to the island “brutally interferes in China’s internal affairs and seriously undermines China’s sovereignty and security interests.” The US should cancel all such sales to Taiwan “so as to avoid further damage to China-US relations and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,” Wang told reporters at a daily briefing. China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory, will make a “proper and necessary response according

to the development of the situation,” Wang said. The State Department said Tuesday it had greenlighted Taiwan’s purchase of four “weapons ready” remotely piloted aircraft and related equipment, the latest in a series of arms transfers for the island. In its announcement, the department said the proposed sale “serves U.S. national, economic, and security interests by supporting the recipient’s continuing efforts to modernize its armed forces and to maintain a credible defensive capability.” Just last week, the administration approved plans for a $2.37 billion sale of Harpoon missile systems to Taiwan. That came hours after Beijing had announced

sanctions on U.S. defense contractors, including Boeing, the lead contractor on the Harpoon deal, over a previous weapons deal. China’s ruling Communist Party threatens to use force to annex Taiwan, which it has regarded as a breakaway province since the sides split amid civil war in 1949. Washington maintains only unofficial ties with Taipei in deference to Beijing but remains the islands most important source of weaponry and is legally bound to ensure its armed forces can mount an adequate defense. Chinese-US relations have plunged to their lowest level in decades amid disputes about security, technology, the coronavirus pandemic and human rights.

S. Africa to unlock $62 bn infra investment JOHANNESBURG, NOV 4 (IANS): As South Africa’s growth is projected to shrink by almost 8 per cent in 2020, President Cyril Ramaphosa said the government was prioritizing economic reform and mass investments in infrastructure. “Over the next four years we hope to unlock 1 trillion rand (62.4 billion USD) in infrastructure investment,” said the President at the Infrastructure South Africa Project Preparation Roundtable and Marketplace on Tuesday. He said his government was ready to rebuild the economy and welcome new investment after the pandemic’s devastation, Xinhua reported. “Key priority intervention is promoting aggressive infrastructure investment

and supporting its delivery, the pandemic severely disrupted economic activity,” he noted. Ramaphosa said the infrastructure investment would focus on different areas ranging from large scale building projects to maintaining existing infrastructure. “Throughout, our focus is on catalysing job creation and ensuring that local businesses benefit,” he said. The President said that multilateral development banks and other commercial institutions have expressed interest in infrastructure development. “Each of these areas is vital to the rejuvenation of our economy, reducing the cost of doing business and improving the country’s competitiveness,” he added.

Quake death toll rises to 116 in Turkey; rescuers finish searches A N K A R A , N OV 4 (AGENCIES): The death toll in last week’s Aegean Sea earthquake rose to 116 on Wednesday as rescuers in the Turkish city of Izmir finished searching buildings that collapsed in the quake. All but two of the victims were killed in Izmir, Turkey’s third-largest city. Two teenagers died on the Greek island of Samos, which lies south of the epicenter of Friday’s earthquake. The U.S. Geological Survey registered the quake’s magnitude at 7.0, although other agencies recorded it as less severe. Mehmet Gulluoglu, head of Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency, said search and rescue operations had been completed at 17 build-

ings that fell in Izmir. The rescue operation has been roaring at full tilt since Friday, pulling 107 survivors from the rubble. Of the 1,035 people injured in the quake, 137 remained hospitalized on Wednesday, the agency added. Following a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday evening, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledged not to give up until the final person was recovered. Rescuers’ spirits were raised Tuesday when they pulled a 3-year-old girl from the wreckage of her family home 91 hours after the quake. The tremors were felt across western Turkey, including in Istanbul, as well as in the Greek capital of Athens. Some 1,700

aftershocks followed, 45 of which were greater than 4.0 magnitude. In Izmir, the quake reduced buildings to rubble or saw floors pancake in on themselves. Authorities have detained nine people, including contractors, for questioning over the collapse of six of the buildings. Turkey has a mix of older buildings and new buildings make of cheap or illegal construction that do not withstand earthquakes well. Regulations have been tightened to strengthen or demolish older buildings, and urban renewal is underway in Turkish cities, but experts say it is not happening fast enough. The country sits on top of two major fault lines and earthquakes are frequent.

ADDIS ABABA, NOV 4 (AGENCIES): Ethiopia’s prime minister on Wednesday ordered the military to confront one of the country’s regional governments after he said it carried out a deadly attack on a military base overnight, citing months of “provocation and incitement” and declaring that “the last red line has been crossed.” The statement by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s office, and the reported attack by the well-armed Tigray People’s Liberation Front, immediately raised concerns that one of Africa’s most populous and powerful countries could plunge back into war. That would send a shock wave through the Horn of Africa and beyond. Addressing the nation on TV, Abiy announced “several martyrs” in the at-

tack in Mekele, the northern Tigray region’s capital, and Dansha town. The prime minister said “the end is near” for the regional force, which is based in Ethiopia’s most sensitive region, neighboring Eritrea. The two countries made peace in 2018 after a long border war. The TPLF had been the dominant part of Ethiopia’s governing coalition before

Abiy took office in 2018 and announced sweeping political reforms that won him the Nobel Peace Prize last year. Those reforms, however, have opened space for old ethnic and other grievances. The TPLF, feeling marginalized, left the coalition last year. It remains a strong military force, observers say. Ethiopia on Wednesday declared a six-month

state of emergency in the Tigray region, saying that “illegal and violent activities within the National Regional State of Tigray are endangering the constitution and constitutional order, public peace and security, specially threatening the country’s sovereignty.” There was no immediate word from the TPLF, and all internet and phone lines were cut in the Tigray region following the announcement. Tigray TV reported that airspace has been closed over the region, and it asserted that the northern command of Ethiopia’s military had defected to the Tigray government. Ethiopia’s government said it would speak to the media Wednesday evening. Ethiopia was already stressed by a dispute with Egypt over a massive Ethio-

pian dam project that has drawn rare attention by President Donald Trump to Africa, and by a multi-layer crisis with the COVID-19 pandemic, deadly ethnic violence and a locust outbreak. Now the greatest test of Abiy’s rule has come. Tigray officials have objected to the postponement of Ethiopia’s national election, once set for August, because of the coronavirus pandemic, and the extension of Abiy’s time in office. On Sunday, a senior TPLF official, Getachew Reda, told The Associated Press his side will not accept a negotiation with the federal government. “What we need now is a national dialogue, not a negotiation,” he said. The TPLF says the release of detained former officials is one precondition to opening talks.

Field day programme on participatory rice seed production at Beisumpuikam village, Peren district, Nagaland A “field day cum farmers’-scientist interaction programme on participatory rice seed production” was organized at Beisumpuikam village of Peren district on 2nd November by ICAR Nagaland Centre, Medziphema and KVK, Peren, to show the performance of RCM-9 and RCM-13 variety in rice seed production fields and scope of participatory rice seed production in Nagaland. A press release from Joint Director, ICAR Nagaland Centre stated that, quality planting material is the most important and critical input for successful agriculture. In the state quality planting martial is not available on time to meet out the quality seed demand. Seed replacement ratio is below 15% in the state, which is very low, mainly due to reliance on informal seed system with traditional rice. Rice productivity of Nagaland is very low with a tune of 1.6 tonnes/hectare (GOI, 2018) as compared to national average of 2.7 tonnes/hectare due to use of traditional low yielding landraces and use of impure seeds of old HYVs. “Therefore, by increasing the availability of quality seed material of HYVs on time will increase the production and productivity of the state to achieve self-sustenance in rice production,” he added. Dr. Harendra Verma, scientist, Plant Breeding and Genetics, ICAR Nagaland Centre, Jharnapani welcomed the farmers and congratulated them for their hard work and discussed the future prospects and know-how on participatory rice seed production. He also advised and encouraged the farmers to take up quality seed production to meet local seed demand timely. He also advised grow High yielding and short duration variety such as RCM-9, which is medium duration variety (125-130 days) so that farmers can harvest it by end of October and in Rabi season farmers can easily taken-up various crops such as toria, mustard, pea, linseed, any vegetables crops etc. by utilizing the residual moisture present in soil to enhance the farm income. Dr. Patu K. Zeliang ACTO, PBG KVK Peren also emphasized on use of early and medium duration HYVs of rice (RCM-9). She also advised the farmers to cultivate Oils seed crops such as Toria, Sesame, Mustard and Pulses like Green gram, Ricebean etc under different cropping systems so as to get multiple incomes from different crops. A progressive farmer of Beisumpuikam village gave a brief feedback on the performance of RCM-9 rice variety and reported that he harvested the yield of 5-6 tonnes/hectare from RCM-9 HYV. Further he added that RCM-13 variety was best for eating and cooking quality. Farmers were very happy after seeing the performance of RCM-9 variety in fields and were ready to cultivate in future also. At the end of programme seed of improved toria variety “TS67” was distributed to the 40 farmers of Beisumpuikam and Jalukiekam village for toria seed production.

A farmer- scientist interaction was also conducted in which queries related to pest and nutrient management and postharvest management of rice and toria was discussed. A total of 38 farmers participated in the programme. On the same day training on Production Technology of Oilseeds and Pulses under Diversified cropping systems was conducted by resource persons Dr. Patu K. Zeliang ACTO, PBG KVK Peren and Dr. Harendra Verma, Scientist PBG, ICAR, Nagaland Centre suggesting the farmers how they can cultivate Oils Seeds crops such as Toria, Sesame, Mustard and Pulses like Greengram, Ricebean etc. under different cropping systems so as to get multiple incomes from different crops utilizing high yielding and short duration crops. 2nd Nagaland Piano Teachers’ Association meet held at MAK

T

he second Nagaland Piano Teachers’ Association (NPTA) members meet was held at Music Academy Kohima (MAK). Speaking as the honoured guest at the event, TAFMA advisor, Theja Meru, called on the gathered pianists and teachers to make Nagaland the piano capital of the country. Meru said this was an achievable feat if all the pianists came together and worked in unison. He cited some important steps in order to help achieve this milestone. The first thing, he said, was the need to have a vision basing on which the pianists can move forward. He challenged the teachers to awaken the youth and help them dream which would draw out the best in them. Hardwork, he said, was the third and an essential requirement in the race to realise this feat. Meru also announced that TAFMA recently collaborated with Royal Mumbai Opera House. He invited NPTA to organise piano events which can be held at the Opera House. During the event Meru

handed out certificates to students and members of NPTA. A brief talk about p i a n o wa s c o n d u c t e d by Khyochano (NPTA President), Nise Meruno (NPTA Honorary Member) and Sahu Peseyie (Board Member) as speakers with Rokopheno Chase as the moderator. Taking part in the Q&A session, TAFMA advisor Theja Meru asked Nise about his experiences of being a Yamaha artiste. Nise replied that when a person is true to themselves and the people around them then good things were bound to hap-

pen.

He said he had been true to his classical roots and that that was one of the reasons he landed the contract. He said, “I did not get the contract because I am the best pianist but I believe I’m a people person. I am able to connect with people without much effort, which, I feel, is a very important quality one needs in order to move forward as a musician alongside being presentable and knowing how to deal with others.” He stressed on the importance of giving space to an artiste to grow. Questions posed by

members of the audience were replied in turns by the three speakers. Piano pieces in various styles and from different periods including Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th Century were presented by Ruth Sasu & Kekhrulu Nakro, Ayide Koza, Thejasanuo Kesiezie and Imsongdi Imsong respectively. The performers each gave brief insights into the styles and composers of the pieces they performed. Earlier welcome address was delivered by Khyochano TCK. She said NPTA was formed primarily to support and help piano educators and

create a closely knitted community among the teachers which would in turn enhance the teaching methods and also aid in better understanding the needs of their students. She reminded the gathering that Piano was the first instrument to be studied in a systematic format from as early as the time of the early missionaries which had been passed on to the present times. Seno Whiso, founder of Bellada Music, Jotsoma, shared her journey as a pianist. She said her first students were her siblings and then from there she gradually proceeded to becoming a full-time teacher. She described her amazement at how a wide range of people wanted to learn Piano including small kids to even retired govt officials, which, she added, was a huge testament to how people loved the instrument. The meet was attended by piano teachers and students from different parts of the state. Members of “The Creative Indian”, a filmmakers crew also attended. (Correspondent)

Scientists discover new mineral in Moon meteorite

A

team of European researchers has discovered a new highpressure mineral named donwilhelmsite in the lunar meteorite Oued Awlitis 001. This new mineral from the Moon could explain what happens in Earth’s mantle, according to a study published in the journal American Mineralogist. The new mineral is mainly composed of calcium, aluminum, silicon, and oxygen atoms. Donwilhelmsite was discovered within shock melt zones of the lunar meteorite Oued Awlitis 001 found in 2014 in the Western Sahara. This meteorite is compositionally similar to rocks comprising the Earth’s continents. Eroded sediments from these continents are transported by wind and rivers to the oceans, and subducted into the Earth’s mantle as part of the dense oceanic crust. While being dragged deeper into the Ear th mantle the pressure and temperature increases, and

the minerals transform into denser mineral phases. The newly discovered mineral donwilhelmsite forms in 460 to 700 kilometre depth. In the terrestrial rock cycle, donwilhelmsite is therefore an important agent for transpor ting crustal sediments through the transition zone separating the upper and lower Earth’s mantle, said the study. This pan-European collaboration was essential to obtain the lunar meteorite, recognise the new mineral, understand its scientific relevance, and to determine the crystal structure of the tiny, the thousands part of a millimeter thick, mineral crystal with high accuracy.

“At the GFZ German Research Centre for Geoscience, we used transmission electron microscopy to investigate microstructural aspects of the samples,” said study co-author Richard Wirth. The new mineral was named in honor of the lunar geologist Don Wilhelms, an American scientist involved in landing site selection and data analyses of the Apollo space missions that brought to Earth the first rock samples from the Moon. Part of the meteorite Oued Awlitis 001, acquired by crowdfunding initiative “Help us to get the Moon!” is on display at the Natural History Museum Vienna, Austria. (IANS)

Baba ka Dhaba owner lodges BTS to play ‘Fall Guys’ on the next episode of their web series complaint against Gaurav Wasan B

B

aba ka dhaba owner Kanta Prasad (80) lodged a complaint against YouTuber Gaurav Wasan for usurping the cash that was donated by their well-wishers to help Prasad and his wife. The couple owns a small eatery in Malviya Nagar of South Delhi. Wasan on October 7, shot a video where the elderly couple lamented over the lack of customers at their food joint owing to the pandemic. The video went viral and many who have seen the video donated money to help the elderly couple. Prasad alleged that Wasan had deliberately shared his own account details and accumulated donation in their name, however Prasad only got a cheque of Rs 2 Lakh from him. Prasad said as the video went viral he had an increased customer flow at

his shop and was earning Rs 10000 a day, but the craze subsided soon and people now mostly visit his shop to take selfies. His income has declined to Rs 30005000 per day. Atul Kumar Thakur DCP of South Delhi said they have received the complaint but no FIR has been filed yet. Wasan however, declined all the allegations. As a proof, he produced the bank receipt of the transactions. He said that he never thought the video

will gather so many views and people will happily help the couple. Wasan, argued that he didn’t want the people to bother the elderly couple and hence shared his own bank details. He said a donation of 3.5 lacs INR was received in 3 days which he has given to Prasad. But, many YouTubers contended that Wasan had accumulated Rs 20 to 25 lacs fund, but gave the couple only Rs 2 lacs. (TheHintToday)

Kanye West hints he ‘Baby Shark’ breaks record, becomes will run again for US most viewed video on YouTube President in 2024

P

i n k f o n g ’s “ B a b y Shark Dance” has officially overtaken Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito” as the most viewed music video on YouTube and the most viewed video on YouTube overall. The children’s rhyme, created by Pinkfong (Republic of Korea) and initially uploaded to YouTube on the 17 June 2016, has garnered an incredible 7,042,967,886 views as of 2 November 2020. The video has also broken the record title for the most-viewed children’s

music video on YouTube, Guinness World Record reported. T h e c a t c hy B a b y Shark tune was sung by 10year-old Korean-American singer Hope Segoine. It became a viral sensation when it was released but it’s taken four years for it to slowly and steadily reach the top of the list for the most viewed video on YouTube. Before the record was snapped up by Baby Shark, it was held by the music video for “Despacito”, a collaboration between

Puerto Rican duo Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. However, this music video still holds records for the most liked video online and the first YouTube video to receive 5 billion views. The precise origins of the Baby Shark song are unknown but it could date back to the 1970s from US summer camps. The dance then became a craze in South Korea initially, with fellow record holders BlackPink incorporating it into their sets. (MyMobile) K Y M C

ISL 2020-21: Sheikh Sahil desperate Women’s T20: Velocity stun Supernovas to make it count for ATK Mohun Bagan SHARJAH, NOV 4 (PTI: South African Sune Luus conjured up an unbeaten 37 under pressure as Velocity overcame a jittery start to stun defending champions Supernovas by five wickets in the opening match of the Women’s T20 Challenge here on Wednesday. Chasing a modest 127, Velocity were 38 for three inside nine overs but Luus took them over the line with her calm-headed 37-run knock that came off 21 balls with four fours and a six. Luus also shared a crucial 51-run stand with Sushma Verma (34) to repair the innings after the early setbacks. The Velocity bowlers, led by left-arm spinner Ekta Bisht (3/22) had restricted Supernovas to 126/8 after electing to bowl. South African medium pacer Ayabonga Khaka (2/27) gave Supernovas the perfect start dismissing both the openers, Dani Wyatt (0) and supremelytalented Shafali Verma (17). Shafali had lit up the modest chase smashing a hat-trick of boundaries against Khaka.

Velocity beat Supernovas by five wickets in opening match of Women’s T20 Challenge in Sharjah on Wednesdsay.

in the back end but their 47-run partnership was broken by Jahanara with Veda Krishnamurthy taking calm-headed skier in the long on. Jahanara later dismissed Harmanpreet for 31 after the Indian skipper holed out at short fine leg. It triggered a collapse as the defending champions lost four wickets for 15 runs. Chamari slammed two sixes and two boundaries in a 39-ball 44, while Harmanpreet hit two sixes and one boundary. Velocity made some early inroads with their spinner duo of Leigh Kasperek and Ekta Bisht dismissing Priya Punia (11) and Jemimah Rodrigues (7) inside eight overs. But Supernova took control in the back end with Chamari breaking free against Manali Dakshini. The Sri Lankan T20 skipper hit Manali inside out over cover and in the next over pulled Kasperek over deep mid-wicket for her second six to lift the run-rate. But Chamari fell six runs short of a half-century as Supernovas failed to shift gear afterwards.

PANAJI, NOV 4 (PTI): Talented young midfielder Sheikh Sahil, who played a key role in Mohun Bagan’s I-League triumph last season, is now itching to make it count for ATK Mohun Bagan in the upcoming Indian Super League. The 20-year-old is the only player from the last year’s I-League champions Mohun Bagan side to be named by Habas in his 27member ATKMB squad. As a result, he is the only footballer in the newlymerged entity whose jersey is not changing this time. “I have been playing in my favorite green-maroon jersey ever since I came to play in Mohun Bagan U-14 team,” Sahil said here. “I am fortunate to have the opportunity to wear this jersey again by Habas Sir.” Sahil’s father has lost his job due to the lockdown and the family is solely dependent on him as he’s desperate to prove his worth. “It’s a challenge to get into the XI with so many talented footballers in our squad,” Sahil, who has to fight with experienced players like Jayesh Rane,

Sheikh Sahil Pranoy Haldar, Glenn Martins to make the XI in the central midfielder position, said. “Coach Sir tells me to take it as a challenge. I am trying to do that as best as I can,” the 20-year-old, who passed High School this year, said. Kibu Vicuna, the ILeague winning Spanish coach of Mohun Bagan, had picked him from an Under-19 tournament and there was no looking back for him since then. Despite having many star footballers, he took his place in the first XI; from the derby to the championship match, he became a cog in Mohun Bagan’s midfield last season. The Spanish coach is

known to make a star from the junior footballers by giving them chance in the XI like he did with Sumit Rathi as it remains to be seen what Sahil has in store at ATK Mohun Bagan. “Habas Sir is giving me various suggestions every day. He is pointing out my mistakes. He appreciates giving a good pass or taking possession. T h e AT K M o h u n Bagan coach was seen conducting various drills to select the first 18 in closed door training on Wednesday. Habas has scheduled a practice match on Friday among the players to identify crucial positions in the defence and forward. On one side there will be Roy Krishna, David Williams, Edu Garcia. On the other, there will be Tiri, Sandesh Jhingan, Pritam Kotal, Shubhashis Basu among others. Midfielders Sahil, Haldar, Prabir Das, Susairaj and Javi Hernandez will play in rotation. Mohun Bagan face Kerala Blasters in the opening match of Indian Super League on November 20.

But Khaka bounced back to dismiss the talented Indian batter after she flicked one straight to deep midwicket. Skipper Mithali Raj then fell victim to Siriwardene after a sluggish seven from 19 balls as it was left for Veda Krishnamurthy (29) and Sushma to keep them in hunt. The seasoned Sushma turned it around for Velocity in the 16th over ham-

mering Poonam Yadav for two sixes with some cleanhitting display to bring the run rate down. She however failed to take them over the line falling to Poonam Yadav in the penultimate over. Needing nine runs from the last over, Luus sealed the chase in the penultimate ball with two boundaries. Velocity will take on Trailblazers on Thursday. Earlier, apart

from Ekta Bisht’s effort, New Zealand off-spinner Leigh Kasperek (2/23) and medium pacer Jahanara Alam (2/27 also contributed in stifling the holders. Jahanara dismissed key batters -- Harmanpreet Kaur (31) and Chamara Atapattu (44) -- to derail Supernova. Sri Lankan T20 skipper Atapattu and her Indian counterpart Harmanpreet had seized control

Andreescu, 20, has not played on tour since the WTA Finals in Shenzhen last year where she retired with a left knee injury. “I’m doing really well. The virus kind of pushed me back, and some little personal things here and there, but right now I’m good, I’m training hard ... I’m really

looking forward to 2021,” the Canadian told the Tennis Majors website. “I’m perfectly healthy. I just really wanted to take time to build everything in my life, and I think this time off really helped me do that.” World number seven Andreescu said she will be “100%” in Melbourne to play the year’s first Grand Slam. “I wouldn’t say I am ready tomorrow to play a match because I am taking it step by step, but maybe in a couple of weeks I will be good,” she added. “I don’t want to rush anything but I’m feeling good.”

LONDON, NOV 4 (AGENCIES): Dillian Whyte can forget about fighting Tyson Fury next month, the world heavyweight champion’s copromoter Frank Warren said on Wednesday. Whyte was next scheduled to be in action on November 21 but a rematch with Alexander Povetkin was scuppered when the Russian tested positive for coronavirus. Whyte’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, then raised the prospect of a bout with WBC champion Fury, who is currently without an opponent for a bout he announced would take place in London in December. But Warren insisted Whyte was not in contention after being knocked out by Povetkin in August. “We’re not in the business of bailing out Dillian Whyte,” Warren told Talksport radio. “Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Dillian Whyte get absolutely pole-

Tyson Fury axed in his last fight? “At the time he was mandatory challenger to Tyson and they kept banging on about it... but they stupidly put him in with Povetkin and that’s it, he’s lost his chance.” Warren added Germany’s Agit Kabayel, who enjoyed a majority decision win over Dereck Chisora in 2017, was the leading contender for the Fury bout. “That’s what we want for Tyson, that’s the preferred opponent,” he said. “Hopefully, we’ll get it over

the line and if not we’ll look at someone else, but it certainly won’t be against Dillian Whyte.” Chisora has said he is prepared to face Whyte for a third time barely three weeks on from his defeat by Oleksandr Usyk. Chisora told Hearn, on Instagram live: “Do you want to give me that fight? I’ll take that.” Ukraine’s Usyk extended his undefeated record with a unanimous points win over Chisora on Saturday.

L O N D O N, N OV 4 (AGENCIES): Jose Mourinho has insisted Harry Kane did nothing wrong after the England forward was criticised for how he won a penalty in Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 win over Brighton in the Premier League last weekend. Kane appeared to draw a foul from Adam Lallana to win the spotkick, which he then converted to open the scoring at home to the Seagulls. Mourinho, during his pre-match press conference ahead of Thursday’s Europa League tie away to Ludogorets, was adamant any fault lay with Lallana. “Harry Kane was in a position to control the ball and Lallana came in a reckless fashion. Why are you saying it is clever?” Mourinho said. “Clever is taking the ball and scoring a goal. It’s a foul.” The experienced Por-

tuguese boss added: “I thought it was a direct free-kick but VAR said it was inside the box because it was on the line. What are we talking about being clever? “Har r y Kane just wants to score goals. Lallana was reckless. “Why are you speaking about us? Speak about Liverpool, Manchester United, City and others with ‘clever’ players and getting penalties. Don’t speak about Harry Kane.” Tottenham will be without Sergio Reguilon, Erik Lamela and Serge Aurier for the trip to Bulgaria after the trio missed training on Wednesday. “Reguilon is ill but not Covid, just ill,” said Mourinho. “Lamela was having a little problem for quite a few weeks and we decided it was the time to stop. “Aurier has a little problem, nothing important.”

As part of the Government’s support towards this initiative, the Chief Minister also announced an amount of Rs 5 lakh to the Shooting Association of Meghalaya (SAM) which is half the amount of the expenditure incurred in preparing the indoor range. In the course of his address, sports minister Banteidor Lyngdoh said, “Me-

ghalaya is a treasure trove of untapped natural sporting talent and it is necessary to promote and nurture them in the interest of producing the best sportspersons in the state.” SAM president, John F Kharshiing thanked the Chief Minister for the support to target shooting sports and stated that since affiliation by the National Rifle Association of India, Delhi, in 2012 and affiliation by MSOA in 2015 the activities since 2012 and 2015 has seen SAM shooters participate in the North East Zonal and National Championships. He also informed that during 2017 in the North East Zone, the total participants were 222 and the SAM contigent comprised 33 shooters out of which 22 bagged medals, stating that this was a significant development as the North East consisted of Assam and Manipur which already had solid infrastructure and skills. After opening the indoor range, the Chief Minister and the Sports and Youth Affairs Minister witnessed a demonstration by two ‘renowned shot’ shooters of SAM namely Hirley Kharbuli, and Anjali Singh, after which the Chief Minister also tried his skills in target shooting. Delhi Capitals face mighty MI

DUBAI, NOV 4 (PTI): They stand on the opposite ends of IPL’s success spectrum but there is little to separate between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals in the tournament’s 13th edition as they head into a blockbuster first qualifier here on Thursday. The team to beat in the league stage, four-time winners Mumbai lost a bit of their momentum after a 10wicket defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad on Tuesday. Chasing their maiden title, Delhi Capitals roared back to form by thrashing Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets to grab the second spot, after four successive losses. The biggest positive for Mumbai has been the return of skipper Rohit Sharma, who had missed four games to recover from a hamstring injury. The star opener, though, perished cheaply against SRH and needs to come good on the big day. The defending champions boast an explosive batting line-up coupled with an equally lethal bowling attack, but the batters had an off day against SRH. Their bowlers too were taken to the task -- a wakeup call before the crucial game.

Delhi’s middle-order has been sluggish and heavily dependent on one or two batters. Mumbai top-order has been firing on all-cylinders and young Ishan Kishan (428 runs) has been a revelation. Quinton De Kock (443) would be keen to continue his sublime form while opening with Rohit. And so would Suryakumar Yadav (410), who has played some scintillating knocks. Known for their sixhitting prowess, Hardik Pandya (241), Kieron Pollard (259) and Krunal Pandya (95) have pummelled bowling attacks to submission. Pollard’s six-hitting ability was on display again when he plundered four maximums against SRH. The three could prove to be the difference. Mumbai rested key bowlers -- Jasprit Bumrah (23 wickets) and Trent Boult (20 wickets) -- against SRH. Both have been lethal at front and at the death. Spinners Rahul Chahar (15 wickets) and Krunal (5 wickets) will need to forget the hammering they received from David Warner and Wriddhiman Saha before taking on DC. On the other hand, Ajinkya Rahane (111 runs)

is back among runs after scoring a match-winning 60 against RCB. Shikhar Dhawan (525) has been in blazing form, with two hundreds and three fifties, but will need support from others in a big game. A major cause of concern is the form of two youngsters -- opener Prithvi Shaw (228) and Rishabh Pant (282) -- who haven’t lived up to their true potential. So has been the case of their key overseas players -- West Indian Shimron Hetmyer (138 runs) and Marcus Stoinis (249 runs). Skipper Shreyas Iyer (421) will have to play the anchor’s role. On the bowling front, the South African pace duo of Kagiso Rabada (25 wickets) and Anrich Nortje (19) have been exceptional. Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel have done well to suffocate the opposition teams. Earlier in the league stage, Mumbai got the better of Delhi twice but Rohit conceded that it is history. “You keep doing well, I know you want to remember those performances, but it is always nice to forget what has happened and focus on the present,” Rohit said. Maradona undergoes successful brain surgery Tsitsipas knocked out of Paris BUENOS AIRES, NOV 4 (AGENCIES): Argentine football great Diego Maradona underwent successful brain surgery for a blood clot in a specialist private clinic in Buenos Aires on Tuesday, his doctor said. “We managed to successfully remove the clot. Diego coped well with the surgery,” Leopoldo Luque said at the icon’s private clinic in the capital Buenos Aires. “It’s under control, there’s a little drainage (of blood). He’ll remain under observation.” World Cup winner Maradona had been taken to hospital in La Plata -- where he is the coach of top-flight side Gimnasia y Esgrima -- on Monday for a series of tests after feeling unwell. A scan revealed the blood clot, and on Tuesday he was transferred to the specialist clinic in a northern neighborhood of the capital. Maradona, who turned 60 on Friday, has suffered ill health before. He has survived two heart attacks, and also contracted hepatitis and undergone gastric bypass surgery. Groups of fans congregated outside the clinic with banners showing

Diego Maradona Maradona’s face and the words “Come on, Diego!” “I came with my wife to support the greatest player of all time,” fan Oscar Medina told AFP. “Once more his health has played a trick on him but he has antibodies to recover with the help of the people,” added Medina. Earlier on Tuesday, Luque insisted it was “a routine operation” and that Maradona was “lucid” and “calm.” Argentine media speculated the clot was the result of a blow to the head. Luque said the clot was “imperceptible” and that those suffering from one rarely remembered receiving a knock to the head. “The operation con-

sists of a small incision to drain the blood. In 24 or 48 hours the patient can leave the hospital,” neurosurgeon Raul Matera told TyC Sports channel. Maradona’s daughter Dalma said she had visited her father after his surgery but did not give further details of his condition. “I just want to thank everyone for the constant displays of love for my dad, for my sister and for me, thanks to everyone who prayed for him,” she tweeted on Wednesday morning. Maradona was transferred from the hospital in La Plata, 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of Buenos Aires, to the capital at 6:00 pm (2100 GMT) accompanied

by one of his daughters, Giannina. Dozens of Gimnasia fans outside the La Plata hospital chanted his name as he left. Earlier in the day, Luque claimed Maradona was feeling “much better and eager to leave” hospital but insisted the patient was suffering from anemia -- a lack of iron in his system -- and dehydration. Luque said that had left Maradona feeling “very weak, very tired.” After further tests, he was diagnosed with the blood clot. He also suggested Maradona’s lifestyle had contributed to his condition. “He’s an elderly patient with many pressures in his life. It’s a time when we must help him. It’s very difficult to be Maradona,” Luque said of the star, who celebrated his 60th birthday on Friday. He said it was a condition that also affected Vice President Cristina Kirchner when she was president. The doctor ruled out any link to the coronavirus pandemic, which is ravaging the South American country, much of it still under confinement. Maradona is considered at a high risk of coronavirus complications

should he be infected. Last week, he began self-isolation for the second time after a bodyguard displayed coronavirus symptoms, though he later tested negative. He joined his players briefly at the club’s training ground on his birthday, but had obvious difficulty walking and had to be helped away by his assistants after staying only 30 minutes. “It breaks my heart to see him like this,” Giannina tweeted the next day. Maradona has difficulty retaining iron due to gastric bypass surgery he underwent in 2005 to lose 50 kilograms (110 pounds), leaving him prone to anemia, Luque said. Though he has recovered from a well-documented addiction to hard drugs, Maradona takes medication in the form of tranquilizers and anxiolytics. “With a patient on medication, there are times when hospitalization serves to adjust that medication. That’s good,” said Luque. Alongside Brazil’s Pele, who turned 80 last month, Maradona is widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time.

Masters by Frenchman Umbert

PARIS, NOV 4 (AGENCIES): Greek second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas was knocked out of the Paris Masters in the second round when he was beaten 7-6(4) 6-7(6) 7-6(3) by Frenchman Ugo Humbert on Tuesday. Tsitsipas saved three match points in the second set’s tiebreak and another one in the last set before bowing out at an empty Bercy arena despite serving 19 aces. Tsitsipas was trailing 6-3 in the second tiebreak but raised his game and benefited from his opponent’s nerves to bag five points in a row and force a decider. But the 22-yearold Umbert kept his composure in the third set’s tiebreak to set up a meeting with Marin Cilic. T he C roa ti a n a d vanced without playing after his opponent, France’s Corentin Moutet, was withdrawn from the tournament after testing positive for coronavirus, the ATP said. Earlier, Swiss Stan Wawrinka beat Briton Daniel Evans 6-3 7-6(3)

Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round, while Belgian eighth seed David Goffin slumped to a 6-4 7-6(6) second-round defeat against Slovak Norbert Gombos. Top seed Rafa Nadal starts his campaign on Wednesday with a secondround encounter with fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. Stefanos Tsitsipas says he is unsure how his ATP Finals title defence will go later this month after the Greek suffered a recurrence of a leg injury during his second-round defeat

at the Paris Masters on Tuesday. “Right now, I don’t know. I really don’t know,” Tsitsipas told reporters when asked about his chances at The O2 in London, where the seasonending ATP Finals will be held without spectators from Nov. 15-22. “During the second set my Roland Garros injury came back, and it wasn’t as bad as at the French Open, but it kind of had me on the edge of things, and I wasn’t sure if that’s good for me to be out there. “But that’s not an excuse, for sure. I still fought and gave my best out there, despite this thing that I had on court. I’m sad, for sure.” Tsitsipas said he had picked up a leg injury during his French Open semifinal against world number one Novak Djokovic earlier this month which hampered him in the fifth set. Italian Matteo Berrettini’s bid to qualify for the ATP Finals ended with a 7-6(3) 6-7(0) 7-5 defeat to American qualifier Marcos Giron on Tuesday.

Rohit being fit best news for Indian cricket: Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar DUBAI, NOV 4 (PTI): Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar is delighted to see a “fit-again” Rohit Sharma back in action which he feels is the “best news for Indian cricket” ahead of the tour of Australia. Rohit, who sustained a left hamstring injury during an IPL game against Kings XI Punjab, was back in the park against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Tuesday, a week after being excluded from the Australia-bound squad on fitness grounds. “Whatever has trans-

Rohit Sharma

pired earlier with regards to his (Rohit) injury, keeping that aside, I would say it’s a great news for Indian cricket that Rohit Sharma is fit,” Gavaskar told YouTube channel “Sports Tak”. Gavaskar, however, said that concerns raised by head coach Ravi Shastri and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly while urging the senior player not to rush his comeback are also “valid”. “Look, the concer n shown by everyone collectively that there could be a rupture (if he hurries his

return) is a valid one. But he looked confident. He fielded at the boundary ropes and also in the 30-yard circle,” Gavaskar said. The legendary opener said that if BCCI wants to put Rohit through another fitness test, there is no harm. “He played the match to show that he is fit but if BCCI wants to test his fitness again, then there is nothing wrong in it. Because they want to check if he is fully fit or not.” Gavaskar also echoed Ganguly’s sentiments that match situation is completely differ-

ent from net sessions which are devoid of any pressure. “May be, he will be monitored. Normally, when you come back from injury, you need to play a few matches as match fitness determines your fitness status. “Irrespective of how much you look fit in the nets, you are not stressed but when you have the pressure of a match, that gives an idea of how fit you are,” he explained. He, however, didn’t want to want to be drawn into questions on whether Rohit will get his vice-captaincy back in case he makes it to the side. “Captain, vice-captain shouldn’t be an issue at all. The moot point is the player should be available to play and he is available,” Gavaskar said. “Twice Rohit was asked before and after the match and he said that he is fit and doing well. He seemed confident. “So actually, there is no point going into the details of what happened earlier. Let’s talk about today and today he is fit,” he added.
