Twenty Indian Army soldiers were killed on June 15 in a clash with the PLA at Galwan valley. The Union Home Secretary said the situation in the North Eastern region is “well under control” and the central government is providing assistance to the state governments in dealing with the insurgent groups. “The government is providing assistance to the states to deal with the insurgent groups and also carrying out negotiations with the insurgent groups. Participating in the diamond jubilee webinar organised by the National Defence College here, he said the central government is in peace negotiations with almost all groups of the North East including the ULFA and the major ones who could have been potentially used by China are holding talks. “There could be potential but not that much. These people (insurgents) have lost that kind of massive support. The leadership of ULFA is back in Assam and talking to the government. The NSCN people, after the ceasefire, are sitting in Delhi and talking to us for the final settlement. We don’t see that kind of major disruptions coming,” he said in reply to a question on whether the government

DIMAPUR, NOV 6 (NPN): Following a misunderstanding between East India Transport (EIT) and Dimapur Goods Transporters’ Union (DGTU) that led to closure of EIT office for some time, Western Sumi Youth Front (WSYF) said it initiated talks between both sides at its office here on Friday. During the meeting, WSYF said both sides understood each other’s views and agreed to mutually/amicably settle the issue in good faith and understanding. Both sides also mutually agreed to continue their normal business without any interference in each other’s business. WSYF, in a statement, further warned of taking stern action if any issue was created by either side out of the current matter that stood resolved. The youth body said it initiated the meeting with authorisation from Western Sumi Hoho as the issue involved two Sumi women running their business. Reiterating its strong stand against all sorts of syndicate system in business that leads to unfair business activities, WSYF said it believed in a level-playing field for all businessmen to earn their livelihood.

WASHINGTON, NOV 6 (PTI): Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on Friday took crucial leads over Donald Trump in the key battleground states of Georgia and Pennsylvania, bringing him on the cusp of a historic victory over the incumbent Republican US president in the closelyfought election. In Georgia, after the latest round of counting results, Biden edged past Trump with a slender lead of 1,096 votes, a remarkable achievement for the 77-year-old former vice president who until Wednesday night was trailing his rival by more than 50,000 votes. Thousands of requested overseas and military ballots may arrive by the deadline Friday, and there are provisional ballots left to count. The Georgia secretary of state Brad Raffensperger said on Friday that there will be a recount given the tight margin. In Pennsylvania, Biden over-

vaccine drive on lines of poll booths NEW DELHI, NOV 6 (AGENCIES): Central government, in its blueprint for the country’s biggest vaccination drive for COVID-19, has planned that the immunisation program will not only be limited to healthcare facilities, but it will also be extended to schools on the lines of polling booths, reports ANI. Sources in the government said, “The National Expert Vaccine Group on Vaccine Administration for COVID-19 is preparing the blueprint for vaccine drive to be held early next year. It has deliberated that the COVID-19 immunisation drive will not only be confined to medical facilities, it will also be extended to schools on the lines of election booths.” “Besides this, experts are looking for the enhancement of digital eVIN plat-

form which will help track beneficiaries. The immunisation program will take place in a phase-wise manner,” the source added. For the digital platform, the Ministry of Electronics and IT DigiLockers are also involved wherein beneficiaries can store their digital certificate. This will inform the beneficiaries about the date, time, and location of the vaccine in advance. According to the sources, a digital-based certificate will be generated once a beneficiary is vaccinated and there is no adverse event post-vaccination. Centre has also planned to start the distribution of Covid-19 vaccine first to the healthcare workers followed by other groups to be added “sequentially”. “In all likelihood, the Covid-19 vaccine introduction will span over a year with multiple groups being included sequentially,

starting from healthcare workers. Therefore, it is important to create strong advisory and coordination mechanism at state and district-level to guide the process of Covid-19 vaccine introduction while ensuring minimal disruption of other routine healthcare services, including immunisation,” the directions forwarded by Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan to chief secretaries of states. Anganwadi centres, schools, panchayat buildings and other such setups would be used extensively in addition to healthcare facilities as vaccination sites in the anti-coronavirus inoculation drive which would be monitored by the Health ministry’s digital platform and would involve sending SMSes and generating a QR code after each jab to track the beneficiaries.

400mn Indians can now send money via WhatsApp NEW DELHI, NOV 6 (IANS): After two years of waiting, WhatsApp payment service has received approval from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to go live on Unified Payment Interface (UPI) with over 160 supported banks. WhatsApp can expand its UPI user base in a graded manner starting with a maximum registered user base of 20 million in UPI, NPCI said. Over 400 million WhatsApp users in India can soon securely send money to friends and family, and payments feature is now available for iPhone and Android users who are on the latest version of the app. “I am excited today that WhatsApp has been approved to launch payments across India. We’ve been working on this with the National Payments Corporation of India, who oversee everything to make sure it’s secure and reliable,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement

on Friday. “And we’ve built it using India’s Unified Payments Interface, which makes it easy for anyone to instantly accept payments across different apps -- and for companies to provide people with great services”. Payments is available now in 10 Indian regional language versions of WhatsApp. “All you need is a debit card with a bank that supports UPI and you can set it up straight away. You can find it in the latest version of WhatsApp,” Zuckerberg said. WhatsApp began

testing payments feature way back in 2018 in India but could not launch the feature owing to regulatory roadblocks and data compliance issues. “We’re delighted to be working with five leading banks in India: ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, the State Bank of India, and Jio Payments Bank. People can send money on WhatsApp to anyone using a UPI supported app,” the company informed. WhatsApp said the payments feature is designed with a strong set of security and privacy

principles, including entering a personal UPI PIN for each payment. The move comes after NPCI in August had informed the Reserve Bank of India that WhatsApp had met data localisation requirements. Brazil became the first country to roll out WhatsApp payment service in June. In India, the WhatsApp payment service will compete against other major players like Paytm, Google Pay and PhonePe, among others. To send money on WhatsApp in India, it’s necessary to have a bank account and debit card in India. WhatsApp, like Google Pay or PhonePe, sends instructions to banks, also known as payment service providers, that initiate the transfer of money via UPI between sender and receiver bank accounts. People can send money on WhatsApp to anyone using a UPI supported app.

Battle for The White House: Joe Biden and Donald Trump.

took Trump with a narrow lead of 5,587 votes. This is significant given that the 74-year-old US president was leading in the swing state till Wednesday night with more than 700,00 votes. Biden continued to maintain his small lead in the other two battleground States of Arizona and Nevada. To be declared the winner of the US election, either of the two candidates needs at least 270 of the 538 electoral college votes. As per the latest projections, Biden has 253 electoral college votes and Trump trails behind with 213. But some US media outlets have given 264 votes to Biden and 214 to Trump.

KOHIMA, NOV 6 (NPN): Following National Green Tribunal (NGT) order to ban fire crackers across 23 states and UTs amidst the double whammy of the pollution crisis and the COVID pandemic, Nagaland too has decided to ban sale and use of firecrackers. Official sources informed Nagaland Post that there was no question of allowing bursting of firecrackers this festive season in the State in the interest of public health and environment and against the backdrop of COVID-19 pandemic. The sources added that an order would be issued by the State government banning firecrackers shortly. It may be mentioned that NGT had on November 2 issued notices to Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) and several State governments on prohibiting firecrackers from November 7 to 30 in

In the US election, voters decide state-level contests rather than a single, national one. Each US state gets a certain number of Electoral College votes partly based on the size of the population, with a total of 538 up for grabs. President Trump at a White House news conference accused the Democrats of massive ballot fraud and alleged that the election was being stolen. He did not offer any evidence to back his claim. His campaign has filed multiple lawsuits in the States of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia, and Nevada and has demanded a recount of votes in Wisconsin. The Biden campaign has denied the allegations.

the interest of public health and environment. The NGT on Wednesday expanded the scope of pleas filed before it seeking a ban on sale and use of crackers in the National Capital Region (NCR) by issuing notices to 18 States, including Nagaland. A bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel noted that it had already issued notice to Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, even as the State governments of Odisha and Rajasthan have already issued a notification prohibiting sale and use of firecrackers. The green panel sought responses from Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.

Central forces being deployed on AIUDF chanted ‘Pakistan zindabad’ slogan: BJP Assam-Mizoram border as row on

Himanta Biswa Sarma

Badruddin Ajmal

GUWAHATI, NOV 6 (PTI): Assam minister and senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday slammed the supporters of AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal alleging that they raised “Pakistan zindabad” slogan on his arrival at the Silchar airport, a charge the opposition party denied. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) claimed that the slogan - “Aziz Khan Zindabad” - was twisted by the BJP to malign the party. Khan is a party MLA who was accompanying Ajmal on Thursday when the alleged incident occurred. Sarma, the convenor of the Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA), the NDA’s version in the region, posted a video on

his Twitter account, showing a group of people raising slogans in front of the airport building at Silchar in Cachar district of the state. “Look at the brazenness of these fundamentalists anti-national people who are shouting PAKISTAN ZINDABAD while they welcome MP @BadruddinAjmal,” the minister tweeted. “This thoroughly exposes the Congress which is encouraging such forces by forging an alliance. We shall fight them tooth and nail. Jai Hind,” Sarma said. The AIUDF has agreed to be a part of the Grand Alliance being forged by the Congress against the ruling BJP for

the state assembly elections next year. Sarma also instructed the police to register a case in this connection and investigate the matter. Silchar’s BJP MP Dr Rajdeep Roy said he filed a complaint with the police against Ajmal and AIUDF supporters in this regard. “Enough is enough! Outraged after hearing ‘Pakistan zindabad’ in my constituency,” Roy said. The AIUDF, on the other hand, alleged that the BJP has twisted the slogans raised by party supporters in support of its leaders Ajmal and Khan. “They said Aziz Khan zindabad, not Pakistan zindabad,” party general secretary Aminul Islam told reporters. “Since the AIUDF and the Congress have started discussions on forming a Grand Alliance, the BJP - particularly its senior minister Himanta Biswa Sarma – has been trying to create controversies. They have realised that it is going to affect the party’s prospects in the polls,” he said. Claiming that it was

a “political conspiracy” and demanded that an inquiry be held into “this misinformation campaign” initiated by certain media houses. The leader of the opposition in the state assembly, Debabrata Saikia of the Congress, expressed concern over media reports that some people raised ‘Pakistan zindabad’ slogans after Ajmal’s arrival at the airport in Silchar on Thursday. “The exact word used by the sloganeers could not be made out distinctly from the news reports due to background noise in the video footage,” he said. The gover nment should immediately direct the police to question the assembled people, analyze all available video footage and utilize forensic technology to ascertain whether the word used before the word ‘zindabad’ was actually ‘Pakistan’ or something else, Saikia said in a statement. “If the word ‘Pakistan’ was actually used, then those guilty of this nefarious act must be iden-

tified and brought to book. Further, in that event, the force which is trying to create unrest in our society via such condemnable deeds must be identified and awarded stringent punishment,” he said. The opposition Congress in Assam announced last month that it has joined hands with two Left parties the CPI and the CPI(ML) - for a united fight from the proposed platform of Grand Alliance, of which the AIUDF agreed to be a part. The election to the 126-member Assam assembly is likely to be held in March-April next year. The 2016 polls gave a fractured mandate and no party has got absolute majority. In the current House, the BJP is the single largest party with 60 MLAs, while its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) have 14 and 12 lawmakers respectively. The ruling coalition also has the support of an Independent MLA. The Congress has 23 MLAs, while the AIUDF has 14 members.

GUWAHATI/SILCHAR (ASSAM), AIZAWL, NOV 6 (IANS): Central Paramilitary Force (CPMF) personnel are being deployed along the Assam-Mizoram border as the 10-day-long tension in these areas persisted on Friday. “Central forces have arrived and those are being deployed along the AssamMizoram inter-state borders. “We are hopeful that the inter-state border troubles would be resolved after the deployment of the CPMF,” Assam Home Secretary Gyanendra Dev Tripathi told the media in Guwahati. The blockade along the National Highway (NH) 306, the lifeline of Mizoram, continued for the 10th day on Friday while Mizoram has refused to withdraw its forces unless the situation is normal. Increasing the tension, Intyaz Ali from Lailapur in southern Assam died in Mizoram custody earlier this week. While Assam officials stated that he died at the hands of miscreants on the other side of the border, Mizoram Home

Secretary Lalbiaksangi said that Ali was apprehended with drugs and he was found dead at a hospital on Monday after he referred to the health centre for medical checkup. Meanwhile, a Mizoram government release said that the state Home Secretary, forwarding a joint resolution of vehicles’ drivers of Zoram (Mizoram) and Silchar (Assam) in a letter to the Union Home Ministry, informed that her government would deploy the CRPF to escort stranded vehicles from Mizoram up to the inter-state border, provided that reciprocal measure is taken by the Assam simultaneously to escort all the stranded vehicles by CPMF personnel up to the border, including those vehicles at Mizoram House compound in Silchar. Due to the blockade along the NH 306 at Lailapur, over 250 Mizoram bound goods-laden vehicles are stuck as the local agitators and vehicle drivers refuse to budge unless Mizoram withdraws its security personnel from Assam and

provides security for the movement of vehicles in Mizoram. Lingering since October 9, the situation along the 164.6-km Assam-Mizoram border took an ugly turn when around 20 shops and houses were burnt and over 50 people sustained injuries in the attacks and counterattacks by people on either side on October 17. The situation was tamed after a series of meetings and central government’s intervention. Union Home Ministry’s Joint Secretary (North East), Satyendra Kumar Garg also held meetings in Silchar and Aizawl. However, the inter-state border trouble resurfaced after a fortnight on October 28 along Assam’s Cachar and Karimganj, which abut Mizoram’s Mamit and Kolasib. In another development, two farmers, who were kidnapped “by the people belonging to Mizoram” while they were working at their paddy field at Tulartal village on October 29, returned to their village the next day.

ULFA-I aiding regrouping of M’laya govt urges outside groups Timings of Spl Rajdhani Express M’laya militants, says former CM not to create ‘communal divide’ changed at few stations

Correspondent

Shillong, Nov 6: Leader of Opposition in the Meghalaya Assembly, Dr Mukul Sangma has revealed that the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom - Independent (ULFA-I) is aiding in the regrouping of former militants from various groups in the Garo Hills region and western parts of Meghalaya, including West Khasi Hills district and South West Khasi Hills district. The veteran Congress leader said that he has raised the matter on several occasions based on inputs that he received. “In 2019, the ULFA-I leader who is completely acquainted with the terrain of the Garo Hills region and western parts of Meghalaya was trying to again reach out to the members with whom they had connection,” Sangma said. The former chief minister pointed out that the Garo Hills and western Meghalaya, including West Khasi Hills and South West

Dr. Mukul Sangma

Khasi Hills, have been considered by insurgent groups of the North East as a safe corridor and a safe haven, where they can set up training camps and raise their cadres. Last month, ULFA-I’s Deputy Commander-inChief, Drishti Rajkhowa, made a narrow escape in a firefight with the Meghalaya police at Bolchugre village under Rongara police station in South Garo Hills district bordering Bangladesh. Sangma said that during his tenure as chief minister, the insurgent groups were made to scatter away by striking at their hideouts. “Today the situation is different as there is a

regrouping of some of the people who have been in different militant insurgent outfits and ULFA-I is actively supporting this game plan which is a threat for the region,” he said. “If some of the leaders are trying to take advantage of the situation and enabling the regrouping of militant outfits, we must understand the magnitude of the problem. This means there is a serious problem,” he cautioned. The for mer Chief Minister criticized the present state government of letting its guard down, and said, “In the preceding years, our government also focused on ensuring complete overhauling of the police organization and I have taken pride in the efficiency and commitment level of the state police.” “We fought militancy and terrorism and ultimately restored peace. This speaks volumes about the commitments of the police organisation and honesty of the officers who were the source of our core strength,” Sangma said.

Shillong, Nov 6: The Meghalaya government on Friday urged certain groups outside the State not to create a communal divide between the tribal and nontribal people living here. Reacting to groups in Kolkata, who have been alleging discrimination against non-tribals, particularly in Ichamati, deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong said they could visit the state for themselves to discuss. On Thursday, a conglomeration of ten groups from Kolkata, including the All Bangali Youth & Students’ Organisation (ABYSO), submitted a memorandum to the State government through Meghalaya House Kolkata. “Don’t add fire because if you talk about the issue of Ichamati, the government is there to handle the situation and to take care that the citizens of the state of Meghalaya, be it non-tribal or tribal, the responsibility of the government is to make sure that both (communities) are safe. We work together and grow together,” Tynsong said.

He also invited the groups from Kolkata to come to the State for discussing all the issues. “The solution of the issues that are in the State does not lie in Kolkata but in Shillong. Come over and discuss but don’t make an issue from outside the boundary,” Tynsong said. He further informed that the Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma has taken up the safety of residents of Meghalaya with the West Bengal government. He said that there seems to be a political instigation behind all the protests against the alleged discrimination of non-tribal, especially Bengalis in the State. The Deputy Chief Minister also threatened action against people who are instigating the issue, saying, “The government is going deep, please don’t add fuel. If anyone is found indulging in such activities they will be put behind bars.” On allegations made by groups that the nontribal are not given trading licence to carry out business, Tynsong said that all genuine citizens of the State have been acquiring the licences.

Manipur by-polls: stage set for polling in four ACs to ensure free, fair poll Three new apps introduced in by-polls Correspondent IMPHAL, Nov 6: The stage is set for polling in four of the five Assembly segments in Manipur with elaborate arrangements being made to ensure a free and fair poll amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The Election Commission of India had announced by-polls in five Assembly constituencies to fill five out of 13 vacant seats of the 60-seat Manipur legislative Assembly on November 7. However, after a BJP candidate contesting the by-poll from Singhat (ST) AC in Churachandpur district was declared elected unopposed, the by-polls will be conducted in four ACs spread over three districts. The ACs going to poll on Saturday (November 7) are: Wangoi in Imphal West district, Lilong and Wangjing-Tentha in Thoubal district and Saitu (ST) in Kangpokpi district. The state chief electoral officer (CEO) said that the by-poll that is being held amid the pandemic will use three new apps – eAtlas, Traccar and BoothApp - for smooth conduct of election

and real time monitoring of election related activities. Database administrator of the state, CEO L Sujata Devi highlighted that the eAtlas will be implemented for election planning, monitoring and real time decision making on poll day using geospatial technology. It will help in monitoring the safe arrival of the poll personnel at the respective polling stations, to capture and instantly report for incidents and alerts for EVM/VVPAT malfunction and real time

reporting which is made visible on eAtlas dashboard, she said. Traccar, an App with GPS, was being installed to sector officers’ mobile for tracking, accessing and reporting the real time locations on the Traccar Dashboard, she said. Booth app will facilitate faster identification of voters using encrypted QR code from the digital marked copy of the electors. “This will reduce the queue, help in faster polling and allow error-free record-

ing of poll turnout without manual intervention, Sujata Devi asserted. The booth app implementation will be in addition to the normal polling process and it will be handled by the polling officer - 1. As soon as the PO reaches the polling station, a Geo-tagged selfie will be updated. The original polling process will continue as per the existing norms. The App will help in reducing the chances of bogus voting or duplication of votes, she said.

She also infor med that the voter turnout app provides estimated voter’s turnout in the real-time basis for every citizen. “This new mechanism will simplify the data entry of two-hourly voter turnout and help in timely dissemination of the information on a real-time basis,” she said. The step-by-step process, the expected reports based on the data entry and the detailed guidelines are attached herewith, which should be brought to the notice of all officials, she said. Earlier, this used to be announced at the end of the Poll. This app can be downloaded from Google Play Store and used by the general masses, she maintained. Meanwhile, state CEO PK Singh said that the stage was set for the smooth conduct of polls as polling personnel have dispersed to their respective polling stations today. As the polling is to be conducted amid the COVID-19 pandemic, all the necessary arrangements focussing on various safety measures of COVID-19 for voters have been made. The COVID-19 safe election was focusing on masks and hand gloves dis-

tribution, thermal screening for all electors, sanitizer, soap and water for washing hands, social distancing of at least six feet from each other, he said. He said that the voting hour which was earlier fixed from 7am till 4 pm has been extended till 5pm. The ECI has given one extra hour so that no voter was left without casting a vote. He appealed to the voters not to panic and to come out and use their franchise saying that “this is the festival of democracy”. A total of 1,33,136 electors will cast their votes in 203 polling stations spread across four Assembly constituencies to decide the fates of 11 candidates in the fray. Altogether 1827 polling personnel, that is, nine polling personnel per polling station were being deployed to conduct the voting. Of the nine polling personnel being deployed in each station, five were polling officers, one BLO (booth level officer), two paramedics and one videographer. According to the state CEO office, Central security personnel were being deployed in hyper sensitive polling stations to assist the state force personnel.

Won’t accept shifting of LAC: CDS Says Chinese military facing ‘unanticipated consequences’ for misadventure in eastern Ladakh

NEW DELHI, NOV 6 (PTI): China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is facing “unanticipated consequences” for its misadventure in eastern Ladakh because of the “firm and strong” responses by the Indian armed forces and the possibility of transgressions and confrontations on the border spiralling into a larger conflict cannot be ruled out, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat said on Friday. In an address at a virtual seminar, Gen Rawat said the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh remained tense and that India’s posturing to deal with it has been “unambiguous”, adding the country will not accept any shifting of the LAC. Talking about myriad external security challenges facing the nation, Gen Rawat also referred to “increasing collusion” between Pakistan and China and said it poses an “omnipresent danger” of regional strategic instability and threatens India’s territorial integrity. “The situation along the LAC in eastern Ladakh remains tense. The PLA is facing unanticipated consequences of its misadventure in Ladakh because of the Indian defence force’s firm and strong response. Our posturing is unambiguous and we will not accept any shifting of the LAC,” he

Gen Bipin Rawat during virtual seminar on Friday. said “In the overall security calculus, border confrontations, transgressions and unprovoked tactical military actions spiralling into a larger conflict cannot, therefore, be discounted,” the Chief of Defence Staff(CDS) said at the seminar organised by the National Defence College. “The constant friction with two of our nucleararmed neighbours with whom India has fought wars, with both increasingly acting in collusion, poses an omnipresent danger of regional strategic instability with potential for escalation, threatening our territorial integrity and strategic cohesion.” The CDS said the “unabated proxy war” unleashed by Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir accompanied by a “vicious” anti-India rhetoric on social media and efforts to create social disharmony within India have taken Indo-Pak relations to a new low. “The surgical strikes post Uri terror attack and

the Balakot air strikes have delivered a strong message to Pakistan that it no longer enjoys the impunity of pushing terrorists across the Line of Control under the nuclear bogey,” he said. “The new Indian template has injected ambiguity and uncertainty in Pakistan, evident in its media reports, about Indian Armed Forces reaction, if Pakistan sponsored terrorists cross the threshold of tolerance,” Gen Rawat added. The CDS said despite internal problems, failing economy, international isolation and vitiated civil-military relations, Pakistan will continue to “profess” that Kashmir is their “unfinished agenda”. “And its Army will continue to raise the bogey of an existential threat from India to justify its disproportionately large strength and need for funds to maintain its war fighting capabilities,” he said. Gen Rawat said Pakistan has continued to re-

main the epicenter of armed Islamist insurgency and terrorism. “For three decades now, the Pakistan Army and the ISI - known as the ‘Deep State’ have been waging a proxy war in Jammu and Kashmir and are now increasingly resorting to non kinetic means by launching vicious anti India rhetoric on social media and propagating false communal narratives to create social disharmony within India,” he said. Gen Rawat also listed various initiatives to reform the Indian defence forces through a variety of measures including ongoing work on setting up of theatre commands, reforming the procurement process to ensure optimal management of the allotted budget, initiatives to ensure jointness among three forces in training and logistics. “We are moving towards a Peninsular/Maritime Theatre Command, an Air Defence Theatre Command and three land centric Integrated Theatre Commands for our Northern and Western borders. We are presently in advance stages of firming up the contours of the structures and transformation,” he said. Referring to evolving geo-political situation, the CDS said China, with its ambition of emerging as a global power, is already making inroads into South

Asia, Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and especially East Africa through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). “Chinese aspirations are evident in the ever-expanding Chinese military maritime footprints in the Indo Pacific, huge investments in the IOR littorals, and entering into strategic partnerships with a number of countries in the region like South Africa, Egypt, Pakistan and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN),” he said. Gen Rawat said the economic slowdown due to the coronavirus pandemic has made China repressive at home but aggressive abroad as is evident through its posturing in South China Sea, East China Sea and the Taiwan Straits. “For India the challenges have manifested with military flare-ups along the LAC. In the coming years we are likely to witness aggressive pursuit of hegemonic interests by China manifesting through economic exploitation of weaker nations.” About internal challenges, he said the ‘Left Wing Extremism’ and growing ‘urban terrorism’ have also contributed towards vitiating India’s security environment. With warfare ranging from conventional to hybrid, he observed that the overall security dynamics are replete with strategic unpredictability.

No bail yet for Arnab, hearing in Bombay HC to continue today MUMBAI, NOV 6 (PTI): There was no immediate relief for Republic TV Editorin-Chief Arnab Goswami, arrested in a 2018 abetment of suicide case, on Friday as the hearing on his interim bail plea before the Bombay High Court remained incomplete. The court on Saturday will continue to hear his petition seeking interim bail and challenging his arrest in connection with the suicide of architect-interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother. Goswami was arrested in the case by Alibaug police in neighbouring Raigad district on Wednesday, and a magistrate’s court there remanded him in judicial custody till November 18. A division bench of Justices S S Shinde and M S Karnik heard arguments by his lawyers Harish Salve and Aabad Ponda on Friday, but said the hearing will continue on Saturday for paucity of time. “We will assemble for this matter tomorrow at noon. Since regular court work will not be there tomorrow, we can hear this matter at length,” the HC said. The high court normally does not assemble on Saturdays. The bench, during the hearing, noted that the normal practice when seeking bail is to first approach the concerned lower court magistrate or sessions court -- and move the high court if bail is refused. To this, Salve said section 439 of the Code of

Criminal Procedure (CrPC) gives the high court special powers to hear bail pleas. “His (Goswami’s) liberty is at stake,” Salve said. Advocate Ponda said a bail application was filed before the magistrate’s court in Alibaug the same night Goswami was remanded in judicial custody. “However, the application was withdrawn the next day as the magistrate had not given clarity on when it would be heard and had also expressed difficulty in deciding the plea as the case lies in the jurisdiction of the sessions court,” Ponda said. Goswami was arrested on November 4 from his Lower Parel residence here and taken to Alibaug. The chief judicial magistrate there remanded him and co-accused Feroze Shaikh and Nitish Sarda in judicial custody. Goswami is presently kept at a local school which has been designated as a COVID-19 centre for the Alibaug prison. The HC on Saturday will also hear petitions filed by Shaikh and Sarda, seeking similar relief. It will also hear a petition filed by Anvay Naik’s daughter Adnya Naik seeking reinvestigation of the case or transfer to an independent agency. On Friday, Goswami’s lawyers also argued that the Maharashtra government was trying to harass him for questioning the government on his news channel. “This is a clear case

of abuse of powers. There are multiple FIRs lodged against him. In this abetment of suicide case of 2018, the police have arrested him knowing fully well that courts will soon break for Diwali vacation. The Maharashtra government just wants to teach him a lesson,” advocate Salve said. The lawyers also pointed out that Alibaug Chief Judicial Magistrate had said in the remand order that the `arrest appears to be illegal’, and had questioned the whole prosecution case. “The court has noted that the police have not taken permission before reopening the case,” Salve said, adding that in such circumstances, Goswami need not be jailed. The high court sought to know if the magistrate’s order of Wednesday has been challenged. Ponda informed that the police have filed a revision application before the Alibaug sessions court against it. In May 2018, interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother Kumodini Naik allegedly died by suicide over alleged non-payment of dues by the accused persons’ companies. In 2019, the Alibaug police filed a closure report in the case which was accepted by a local court there. However, the case was reopened in October 2020 by the Alibaug police who claimed that fresh evidence had come to light which warranted further probe.

Appeasement politics hurting Two Lashkar militants killed in J-K’s Pulwama encounter Bengal’s glory, says Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah flashes the victory sign in Kolkata, Friday. (PTI) KOLKATA (WB), NOV 6 (PTI): Stressing that there was a need to restore West Bengal’s “lost glory”, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said the present “appeasement politics” in the state has hurt its age-old tradition of upholding the nation’s spiritual consciousness. Maintaining that Bengal is the land of luminaries such as Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda, Shah said the state once used to be the centre of spiritual awakening in the

entire country. “However, the politics of ‘tustikaran’ (appeasement) has hurt this glorious tradition of Bengal. I hereby call upon the people of Bengal to wake up and perform their responsibilities to bring back the glory of the state.” The top BJP leader, who visited Dakshineswar temple on the second day of his two-day visit to the state, was taken to the sanctum sanctorum of the centuriesold shrine, where he offered puja to the goddess. “I prayed for the well being of the entire state,

the country and its people. We prayed that the country retains its position of glory in the world under the leadership of (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi.” Shah was greeted at the temple by members of state BJP Mohila Morcha, including its president Agnimitra Paul, who blew conch shells and put a ‘tilak’ on his forehead. Taking to Twitter, he wrote, “Blessed to have offered prayers at Maa Dakshineswar Kali Temple in Kolkata...” “May she continue to shower blessings on India. I would be leaving from here with renewed energy and consciousness,” he said. The Union minister, after offering prayers, headed to eminent vocalist Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty’s music school-cum-residence ‘Shrutinandan’, where he met his students and family members. Scotching speculation that he might join the saffron camp, Chakraborty said that he was happy to have hosted Shah at his residence but harboured no such intention.

SRINAGAR, NOV 6 (PTI): Two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants, believed to be Pakistanis, were killed while another, a local, surrendered before security forces during an overnight encounter in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir in which a civilian also lost his life, police said on Friday. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Lalpora Chatlam area of Pampore in the south Kashmir district Thursday evening following information about the presence of militants there, a police spokesman said. During the search operation, the militants fired indiscriminately, resulting in injuries to two civilians, and managed to escape from the hiding spot, he said. In the first instance, both the injured civilians were immediately rescued and shifted to a hospital. However, one of the injured, identified as Abid Ahmad Mir, a resident of Meej Pampore, succumbed to injuries, while as the condition of other is stated to be stable, the spokesman said. He said the security forces continued with the search operation and again tracked the militants. They were given the opportunity to surrender, the spokesman said, adding, however, they

Won’t die until rights are restored: Farooq JAMMU, NOV 6 (PTI): In his first political rally here since the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status last year, former chief minister Farooq Abdullah on Friday said he won’t die until constitutional rights of the people of the erstwhile state are restored and dared the BJP to respond to his questions rather than “misleading the country” and making “false promises”. “I will not die until the rights of my people are given back.... I am here to do something for the people and the day I will finish my work, I will leave this world,” the National Conference (NC) president told his party workers who packed the Sher-eKashmir Bhawan here ahead of a scheduled meeting of the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) on Saturday. “We will fight for our rights and identity and will not be cowed down,” he said and asked “what was our

Farooq Abdullah addresses party workers at the party headquarters, in Jammu, Friday (PTI) fault?” Taking a dig at the JK unit of the BJP, he said those setting ablaze his effigies should remember that “it was Farooq Abdullah” who along with BJP stalwart A B Vajpayee represented India in Geneva and silenced the opponents. “I am not afraid of BJP. I am not armed with lathi or stone, let them come to me and reply to my questions which they will not,” he said, adding his party never took decisions on the basis of religion and region. Continuing his attack,

he said “Those who claim to be the champions of Hindu cause and challenging us, let them do a favour to this country by going to the borders and show their power to the enemy rather than to the citizens of the country. We have done it when the NC stood against the tribal raid and saved Srinagar from being captured in 1947.” The National Conference workers, especially the party’s youth leader Maqbool Sherwani, had misled the Pakistan Army disguised as tribal raiders in Baramulla to

enable Indian Army land in the state. It was 84-year-old Abdullah’s first political meeting in Jammu since the abrogation of Article 370, which accorded Jammu and Kashmir special status, and bifurcation of the state into union territories in August last year. Mainstream political parties in Jammu and Kashmir, including the NC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), formed the PAGD last month for the restoration of the special status of the erstwhile state as it existed before August 5 last year and also to initiate a dialogue between all stakeholders on the issue. Abdullah, accompanied by his son and former chief minister Omar Abdullah, arrived here this afternoon, their first visit to the region in over a year. The Abdullahs, along with other political leaders in Kashmir, were detained under the Public Safety Act and released this year.

again fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party of the forces, which was retaliated leading to an encounter. Due to darkness, the operation was suspended and the whole area was put under strict cordon,

he said. The spokesman said the operation was resumed in the early hours of Friday, and in the ensuing encounter, one of the trapped militants was killed. However, the opportunity to surrender was yet again offered to

the other trapped militants, as a result of which one of the trapped terrorists of LeT outfit laid down his arms and surrendered in an injured condition before the forces during the live encounter and was subsequently shifted to a hospital, he said.

Nagaland Post Vol. XXx NO. 333 Dimapur, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2020

A

Much ado

ll legislators, both from the treasury and opposition in Nagaland, have been pursuing for unity among all stakeholders, as self-appointed ‘facilitators’ to the Naga peace process. The formation of the Joint Legislators Forum(JLF) in 2009 was to present a united resolve towards the objective of peaceful solution. Though the JLF has no direct role whatsoever other than supplementing the efforts of negotiating parties; yet as the elected representatives they were expected to voice out their stand. Since its inception, the JLF has been involved with holding a series of meetings with the main stakeholders- government of India’s Interlocutor, NSCN(I-M) and Working Committee of NNPGs. In addition, JLF delegations as well as council of ministers have been flying to Delhi to meet with central leaders to impress upon the Centre to speed up the process. This was achieved, after prime minister Narendra Modi took over in 2014. Within the next few months, the government of India under Modi signed the Framework Agreement with the NSCN(I-M) on August 3,2015. Next, another document was signed with the seven-member NNPGs- Agreed Position- on November 17,2017. Both the documents comprise of the blueprint for preparation of the final draft to bring solution. However, on August 18,2020 the forum suffered a setback when the opposition NPF decided to withdraw all its members. The NPF explained that it withdrew because the JLF was reduced to a mere forum without any tangible road-map for resolving the Naga political issue. Further, the NPF stated that even as October 31, 2019 was made the deadline for a conclusion on the Naga political issue, the state government paid the least attention in convening a JLF meeting before that despite appeals. Based on its arguments, the NPF then went on to formally constitute its own Political Affairs Mission(PAM) on August 28,2020 with the same objective. The split in JLF only exposed how those who appeal to all sections to come together for solution, do not practise what they preached. On October 15, the state government convened a consultative meeting on the Naga issue where 39 organisations and 206 representatives attended. The meeting resolved to urge upon the government of India to hasten one solution, one issue for one people. Rio revealed that the meeting was as per the advice of the union home minister Amit Shah. However, NPF did not attend. Both Rio and Zeliang were reportedly advised to hold a joint press conference and reaffirm the October 15 resolution. On November 5, Rio and Zeliang held a joint press conference where PDA reaffirmed the resolution but NPF said nothing about. The proposal of the NPF for a new forum(with a new name) and replacing Speaker as the head with the chief minister ; was like an attempt to sidestep the issue over the October 15 resolution. The other proposal to convene a sitting of the house to deliberate on the Naga issue and perhaps pass another resolution sounded good but not based on good sound reason. The house had passed many resolutions in the past and so it raises the question on whether there was a crucial need and and helpful to have another resolution passed to bypass the October 15 resolution when legislators and their parties did just that ? Much time has been spent on meetings and resolutions. Now is the time to rid of pettiness and work towards the common goal for peaceful solution.

DailyDevotion Intimate Theology

Do you believe this? —John 11:26

Martha believed in the power available to Jesus Christ; she believed that if He had been there He could have healed her brother; she also believed that Jesus had a special intimacy with God, and that whatever He asked of God, God would do. But— she needed a closer personal intimacy with Jesus. Martha’s theology had its fulfillment in the future. But Jesus continued to attract and draw her in until her belief became an intimate possession. It then slowly emerged into a personal inheritance— “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ…” (John 11:27). Is the Lord dealing with you in the same way? Is Jesus teaching you to have a personal intimacy with Himself? Allow Him to drive His question home to you— “Do you believe this?” Are you facing an area of doubt in your life? Have you come, like Martha, to a crossroads of overwhelming circumstances where your theology is about to become a very personal belief? This happens only when a personal problem brings the awareness of our personal need. To believe is to commit. In the area of intellectual learning I commit myself mentally, and reject anything not related to that belief. In the realm of personal belief I commit myself morally to my convictions and refuse to compromise. But in intimate personal belief I commit myself spiritually to Jesus Christ and make a determination to be dominated by Him alone. Then, when I stand face to face with Jesus Christ and He says to me, “Do you believe this?” I find that faith is as natural as breathing. And I am staggered when I think how foolish I have been in not trusting Him earlier.

Post-mortem

Voice of students: online class announce or renounce? W ith the outbreak o f t h i s C ov i d -19 pandemic, schools and colleges in Nagaland have been closed since March 16, 2020 which has brought a great impact on the students as well as in our academic studies. The introduction of online classes has gained immense popularity to pursue learning even during this time. It has helped us to stay in touch with our books in spite of not being able to attend direct classes. But are these online classes really helping us? A short survey was conducted recently in which a small group of students participated and suggested their opinions, their experiences and the benefits they get from online classes. Out of 100 percent, 41 percent were class 11 students, 55 percent were class 12 stu-

dents and 4 percent were under graduates. The mass surely believe home as a classroom with the start of online classes. But according to the survey, the students strongly disagreed with this belief. On the other hand, few students agreed that they indeed find their home as a classroom but most of the students have disagreed. Before online classes started, people must have thought it to be really good. However, students personal suggestions during the survey created a vivid picture of how online class is actually away from our expectations. After intense scrutiny of the students’ opinions on online class, it is understood that students face a lot of problems every day. On one hand, we see one group of students finds it to be good, on the other

hand, another group find it to be inconvenient and ineffective. It is fun learning online but not all the time. Concentration in home environment is really hard sometimes. Online class is not found to be much appealing as all the students are not served with good internet connection every time. Now, we are packed with a lot of works and challenges, more than when we had offline classes. It is not only my personal experience but also experience of many other students of being tighten down with many different works. It has reduced the time we spend with our family. Schedules are very tight and responsibilities have increased with additional pressure for our academic results. Despite teachers’ immense efforts in preparing explanation videos, the

gap between us have resulted many problems in our learning. As for some students, online classes have encouraged self study which helped them identify their abilities. The most common problems, however, for all the students are: bad internet connection and tons of notes and assignments on the line that have to be completed on time which have disturbed study plans. As per the survey it was found that the problems seems to be increasing and that, online classes do not have much benefit upon students. As a student, we are made to catch up with all other responsibilities while running the race towards our dream. When some did not receive much benefit except pressure, some students received benefits such as completion of notes and the advantage

of reviewing explanation videos when needed. Online classes require more efforts and motivation than the traditional classes and so, many students mentioned about their fear of not performing well in their studies. Due to lack of time, going back to the chapters which have already completed during online classes will be difficult thereby inducing trepidation in our mind. Though teachers are giving a lot of effort in teaching tirelessly, explanations through online classes are like taking crash course coaching. In general, online classes explanations are short as it is not possible to comfortably elaborate or explain everything in detail like it is done in school, yet, the ‘To Do’ activities are more. One among the many problems we face due to lack of proper explanation

is - writing assignments without really understanding the concept of the topics assigned by our teachers. Preference is still given to offline classes where there is interaction between teachers and students in person as it is more comfortable to learn. The learning mood is abundantly available in our classroom environment which we deeply miss. The teacher - student bond shared in the classroom is stronger and so learning is much better and fun. The current situation has compelled online classes to be conducted which are quite a great opportunity for us to learn even during this lockdown with the fact that ‘something is better than nothing’. ike many Nagas, the Lothas practiced headhunting in the older days. But after the arrival of Christianity, they gave up this practice. Before Christianity came into our land, the Lothas worshipped the God of the Earth and the God of the Sky in the form of religious celebration, festival and feasts. In those days, all religious and cultural rituals were performed under the leadership of the Village Priest. A proclamation of the starting of the festival to the village was done by the village priest. TOKHU EMONG and PIKHUCHAK are the main festival celebrated amidst much showiness and splendor. TOKHU means feast, taking food and drinks. EMONG means the halt on the appointed time. The Tokhu Emong is celebrated in the 1st week of November every year and it stretches over to 9 days. It is the harvest festival of the Lothas. With the harvest done and the granaries full, the people now take a respite from the toils and sweat and settle down to enjoy the fruits of one’s hard labour. Prayers were offered to the spirits of the people who had died in the respective year. And after the declaration of the festival, if a stranger visited the village before the beginning of the festival, he will be given two alternatives as per the traditional customs. Either he leave the village prior to sunset or he stay until the time of the culmination of the festival however, he will be treated with hospitality by the villagers if he decide to stay for the festival. During this festival, the entire village takes part in the celebration. Every

household have food and drinks prepared for the feast. Friends, Families’ neighbors are invited to each other’s house and this continues for 9 days. The main features of the feast are community songs, dances, feast, fun and frolic. Everyone attire themselves in their beautiful traditional dresses and costumes according to their social status. There is an air of gaiety and light heartedness everywhere and gifts of food and drinks are exchanged during the festival. Among friends, the number of cooked meat given denotes the depth of friendship and ties. It is a festival enjoyed by both the young and the old, praising the gods for their abundant blessings. Tokhu Emong is also a celebration about brotherhood, forgiveness and oneness. It is celebrated through sharing of food, gifts, folklore narration and a sumptuous community feast. The attributes of the festival does a candid exploration of the Lotha culture and heritage. Tokhu Emong signifies the end of any bitterness and settlement of all problems. It is also a festival of gratitude, sharing and reconciliation but the most beautiful aspect of this festival is that past hostility are forgiven and new ties are formed and bonds of closer intimacy are formed. After the festival, marriages were arranged for the young couples who were engaged during the year. People express the feeling of enthusiasm and exhilaration within them through a feasting that is extravagantly grand in nature. People treat themselves as well as others to this grand and beautiful occasion which is a perfect blend of religion, culture and entertainment. Lotha Hoho Dimapur

T

he Govt. had taken a historic decision on November 7 2015 to implement One Rank One Pension (OROP) – fulfilling the long standing demand of the Ex-Servicemen – despite the huge financial burden this decision has put on the defence budget. It has been five years since the benefits of OROP began accruing to lakhs of defence forces pensioners and their dependants and it would be an apt occasion to review how the scheme has performed. The historic decision reflected the commitment of the Government to the welfare of the Ex-Servicemen. The acceptance of the principle of One Rank One Pension for the Defence forces personnel was announced by the then Finance Minister in his Interim Budget 2014-15 speech and it has been reiterated in the President’s address to both Houses of Parliament on 9.6.2014 after the constitution of 16thLok Sabha and also in the regular Budget 2014-15 speech dated 10.07.2014. Keeping in view the magnitude and complexity of the issues related to defence pensions, extensive consultations were held with experts and ex-Servicemen before issue of Government order on implementation of OROP. OROP implies that uniform pension

be paid to the Armed Forces Personnel retiring in the same rank with the same length of service regardless of their date of retirement. Thus, OROP implies bridging the gap between the rate of pension of current and past retirees at periodic intervals. The Ex-Servicemen Associations for several years have demanded the same pension, which is granted to new pensioners with same rank and with same length of service. A review of the background of this issue reveals that the High Level Committee on problems of Ex-servicemen constituted in 1984 (K.P.Singh Dev Committee) to go into the rehabilitation, re-settlement and welfare of Ex-servicemen suggested to the Government additional measures even though its terms of reference did not include Defence pension. Upon receipt of representations on pension matters, the Committee recommended that the Government should consider the issue of “one rank one pension’ particularly in the light of the principle, which has been already established with respect to the pension of judges of the Supreme Court and the High Courts. This was followed by two committees, both under the Cabinet Secretary in 2009 and 2012 to look into pension related

issues of Defence services personnel. Finally in 2015, after discussions at several levels the Government took the bold decision to implement the OROP thus fulfilling the long pending demand of the Ex-Servicemen. The decision since then has benefited lakhs of defence forces pensioners in the last five years. A sum of Rs. 10795.4 crore (which includes payment of Rs. 348.56 crore made to Nepali pensioners) has been disbursed till date to 20,60,220 Defence Forces Pensioners/Family Pensioners as arrears on account of implementation of OROP. The yearly recurring expenditure on account of OROP is about Rs.7123.38 crores. For about six years starting from 01.07.2014, the total recurring expenditure worked out to approximately Rs. 42740.28 crore. OROP beneficiaries also got the benefit of fixation of pension under 7th CPC while calculating the pension by multiplication factor of 2.57. Even though there are certain issues still to be resolved, they would not take away sheen off the enormous positive impact the OROP has made on lakhs of lives of retired armed forces personnel. Have to pay for our carelessness

Sir,

Ever since the imposition of nationwide lockdown by the government of India in the month of March 2020, Nagaland also goes under total lockdown and people began to panic. There were reports of physical assault on frontline health workers by the security personnel on duty. Standard Operating Protocols/Procedures (SOPs) were framed out and people strictly followed SOPs when the deadly coronavirus were not reported in the state and the northeastern states. Shops dealing with essential commodities were allowed to open where wearing of face masks, keeping of hand sanitisers, maintaining social distancing were a must to the enter the shops. The above SOPs gradually began to lose its track from being followed once the viruses entered Nagaland. Now, the cases of COVID-19 in the state has been rising day after day and the people has started to take the coronavirus lightly without maintaining social distance, without wearing mask and without using hand sanitisers. There are few shops who keep hand sanitisers at the entry points and almost all shops allow customers to enter without masks. The question of physical distance does not arise when the streets and markets are packed with shoppers and pedestrians. With the onset of winter, if people continue to ignore the deadly virus, we have to pay for our own carelessness for the virus will still be there until the vaccine is out. Ensure there’s no smog in Delhi: SC

NEW DELHI, NOV 6 (PTI): The Supreme Court Friday asked the Centre to ensure there is no smog in Delhi as it was informed that the commission on air quality management has started functioning from today. The pollution problem has to be dealt with by the executive as it has the power, money and resources for this, a bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde observed and posted the pleas related to air pollution in Delhi-national capital region (NCR) for hearing on December 8. The Centre on Thursday appointed former Chief Secretary of Delhi M M Kutty as the chairperson of the Commission for Air Quality Management (AQM) in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the bench, also comprising Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian, that the Commission will start functioning from Friday and the government has appointed its members. “The only thing is that you ensure that there is no smog in the city. We are not concerned with commission. There are many commissions and many brains are working but just ensure that there is no smog in the

and something drastic needs to be done. He said by the time court will reopen after vacation, the current situation may all be over. The bench said that it will keep the matter on reopening after the Diwali vacation. On October 29, the top court was informed by the Centre that it has come out with an ordinance on curbing pollution and it has been promulgated already. The top court had said that it would have to look at the Ordinance before passing any direction in the matter which has raised issues regarding pollution caused due to stubble burning in neighbouring states of Delhi. The apex court had on October 26 kept in abeyance its earlier order appointing one-man panel of retired apex court judge Justice Madan B Lokur to monitor the steps taken by neighbouring states to prevent stubble burning which is a major cause of pollution in the Delhi-national capital region (NCR). “We would like you to stop using your beautiful cars. Which you won’t. We should all go about on bikes -- not motorbikes but bicycles,” the CJI had observed.

Priyanka demands halving of electricity rates for farmers in UP

N E W D E L H I / LU C KNOW, NOV 6 (PTI): Voicing concern over alleged irregularities in electricity billing in Uttar Pradesh, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday urged the Yogi Adityanath government to act against those responsible for it and demanded that the rate of power for farmers be halved immediately. The Congress general secretary in-charge Uttar Pradesh also demanded that relief be given to weavers, artisans and small-scale industries in electricity consumption. In a statement, she said that there was a “terror” of rising electricity bills and of meters in the whole of Uttar Pradesh. Noting there has been a big rise in electricity rates in the last few years, Priyanka Gandhi said that in the last eight years, the rates for rural household consumers have increased by 500 per cent, urban domestic electricity rates have risen by 84 per cent and for farmers the rates have increased by 126 per cent. She said Uttar Pradesh has become a “laboratory” for electricity meters which have been found to run many times faster than they

should. Even in houses that are locked, a bill of up to Rs seven-eight thousand is coming, she alleged. In many districts of the state, it was also seen that bills came without electricity meter being installed, she said. The public is already reeling due to price rise, the business of small enterprises has collapsed, farmers’ crops are not being sold, they are not getting help in the event of floods, hailstorms and natural disasters, crop insurance scheme has become a source of income for big companies, and in such a situation, electricity prices are constantly increasing and consumers can no longer bear the brunt of irregularities, Priyanka Gandhi said. She said that in the COVID-19 pandemic, what should have happened was

that people should have been given relief by reducing the rates of electricity in a big way. Electricity bills of farmers should have been waived and weavers-artisans, small-scale industries should have been given concession in electricity bills. She demanded that the electricity rates for farmers be halved, the truth about irregularities in metering be brought to the fore, those responsible for it be punished and weavers-artisans as well as small-scale industries be given relief in electricity consumption. Later, in a tweet, Priyanka Gandhi lashed out at the Uttar Pradesh government over the alleged arrest of farmers in Saharanpur for stubble burning. “Are only farmers responsible for pollution? When will action be taken against those who are really responsible for pollution?” she said. “Farmers’ vote -- legal, farmer’s paddy -- legal, farmers’ straw -- illegal?” she tweeted. Priyanka Gandhi also thanked Congress workers for ensuring the release of farmers allegedly arrested in Saharanpur.

city,” the bench said. “We are a court of law. This is a problem which has to be dealt with by the executive. They have the money, the power and the resources for this. We are not abdicating our responsibility or functions but understand this, we have some limitations,” the bench observed after one of the counsel referred to the situation of pollution in Delhi. Mehta told the bench that the government is taking all efforts on war footing to deal with the situation. Senior advocate Vikas Singh, appearing for petitioner Aditya Dubey who has raised the issue of pol-

lution caused due to stubble burning in neighbouring states of Delhi, said the chairman of the commission is a bureaucrat and it could have been a retired judge of the HC. “There is no member from the Union health ministry,” Singh said, adding that pollution is linked to health issues. The bench said the commission can talk to anybody in the country. Singh contended that there is no classification of offence in the recent ordinance on air pollution and Rs 1 crore fine and five year jail term is a little bit arbitrary. The bench

asked whether all offences in the ordinance are noncognizable. Singh said these are cognizable. The top court told Mehta that there is no grading of offence to which he said he would like to respond to it. “We don’t want to advise. These are all knowledgeable people and there are NGO people also,” the bench said. Mehta pointed that there are experts from the field besides members from NGOs in the newly created commission and they will all start working from Friday. Singh added that the situation today is almost of a public health emergency

the spirit of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor as also the religious sentiments of the Sikh community at large,” Srivastana said. India has received representations from the Sikh community, expressing “grave concern” over the decision by Pakistan targeting the rights of the minority Sikh community in that country, he said. “Pakistan is called upon to reverse its arbitrary decision to deprive the Sikh minority community it’s right to manage affairs of the Holy Gurudwara Kartarpur Sahib,” said Srivastava. In the midst of heightened tension between the two countries, the corridor linking Dera Baba Sahib in Gurdaspur in India with Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan was thrown open in November, in a historic people-to-people initiative. Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara is located in Pakistan’s Narowal district across the river Ravi, about four kilometres from the Dera Baba Nanak shrine. It is the final resting place of Sikh faith’s founder Guru Nanak Dev, who had spent the last 18 years of his life in Kartarpur.

New Delhi, Nov 6 (PTI): The Supreme Court Friday directed that the November 9 e-auction of 34 coal blocks, including five in Jharkhand, shall be subject to its final order. A bench of Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian asked the Centre to inform the bidders that benefits of any nature to them will be provisional and subject to the orders of the apex court. Attorney General K K Venugopal, appearing for the Centre, said no trees will be cut in the area. On November 4, the top court had said it intended to pass an order that any proposed mining block within the 50 kilometer radius of an eco-sensitive zone will not be e-auctioned for commercial purposes in Jharkhand. Maintaining that it only wants to ensure “forests are not destroyed”, the top court also said it was mulling over setting up of an expert committee to examine whether an area near the proposed mining sites in Jharkhand qualifies as ecosensitive zone.

Kumar has risen in politics from 1974 “JP movement”. As an office bearer of the Patna University students union, he along with Lalu Prasad, Sushil Kumar Modi and union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad among others took active part in the 1974 movement launched by Loknayak Jayprakash Narayan against the Congress government. During his near four decades in politics he has been legislators and member of Parliament several times. He is seeking fourth straight term in the chief minister’s office in the current polls. He served in the cabinet of Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Dipankar Bhattacharya, secretary general of the CPI (ML), insisted that Kumar had played an “emotional card” in a bid to strike a chord with voters who

were angry with him. “Nitish Kumar will always be remembered as the man who made it possible for the BJP and its toxic communal politics to take roots in Bihar. His party supported the CAA and later made pretensions of opposing the NRC. “His emotional card will find no resonance with the people”, said Bhattacharya, whose party is a constituent of the opposition Grand Alliance which is helmed by the RJD and includes Congress, CPI and CPI(M). Congress MLC Prem Chandra Mishra, whose party has shared power with Kumar in the past, concurred that the Chief Ministers utterances were “sentimental and politically motivated” which came out “too late” and would “achieve too little”.

Ladakh standoff: Indian, Chinese armies hold 8th round of military talks

NEW DELHI, NOV 6 (PTI): The Indian and Chinese armies on Friday held another round of Corps Commander-level talks with an aim to chart a roadmap for disengagement of troops from all the flash points in eastern Ladakh, government sources said. The eighth round of high-level military talks began at around 9:30 am in Chushul on the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, they said. In the last few days, the top military brass of India held a series of meetings where the overall situation in eastern Ladakh was reviewed and it was decided to press for comprehensive disengagement of the troops in talks with China. The seventh round of Corps Commander-level talks had taken place on October 12 during which China was pressing for withdrawal of Indian troops from a number of strategic heights around the Southern bank of Pangong lake.

But the fact remains he was addressing his final election rally, minutes before campaign for the third and last phase of elections came to a close. He was referring to that”, Singh asserted. State minister Sanjay Kumar Jha too echoed similar views. “Every time since 2005, in his last public meeting during campaign Kumar has been saying like this so it’s wrong to interpret that this is his last election,” Jha, a close confidante of the chief minister, told PTI. “Kumar will continue to serve the state and its people till public wants,” he said and ridiculed the rivals for reading too much in it. RJD Chief Ministerial candidate Tejashwi Yadav, who has emerged as the principal challenger to Kumar, nearly four decades his senior, at the young age of 31, reacted with glee “we

NEW DELHI, NOV 6 (PTI): India on Friday summoned the Charge d’Affaires (CDA) of the Pakistan High Commission here to lodge a strong protest over Islamabad’s “unilateral” decision to transfer the management of the Kartarpur Sahib gurudwara from a Sikh body to a separate trust, and demanded an immediate reversal of this “arbitrary” move. MEA Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said Aftab Hassan Khan, the Pakistani CDA, was categorically told that the decision by Pakistan is “highly condemnable” and runs against the spirit of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor. Pakistan has decided to transfer the management and maintenance of the gurudwara from the Pakistan Sikh Gurudwara Prabhandhak Committee to the administrative control of the Evacuee Trust Property Board, a non-Sikh body. “The CDA of the Pakistan High Commission was summoned and our strong protest was conveyed. PATNA, NOV 6 (PTI): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s stunner that the ongoing assembly elections were his last, triggered hectic speculation in the political circles here Friday. The ruling Janata Dal (United) categorically dismissed suggestions that Kumar, who also heads the party, had retirement from politics on his mind while stating that the ongoing assembly elections were his “last”. Vashishtha Narayan Singh, a veteran socialist leader who has been associated with Nitish Kumar for more than 30 years and currently heads the partys state unit, disapproved of interpretations “without listening to the full statement”. “Ye mera aakhiri chunaav hai.......Ant bhala to sab bhala” (This is my last election...all is well that ends well), Kumar had said at Dhamdaha in Purnea district on Thursday while winding up his speech, leading to a flurry of reactions from the opposition parties which insisted Kumar’s words were admittance of an “impending defeat”. “Does a political or social worker ever retire? After potato & onion, edible oil burns hole in pockets

New Delhi, Nov 6 (IANS) : After potato and onion, the price of edible oil has now gone up due to a sharp increase in the cost of oilseeds. Crude palm oil (CPO) prices in the domestic futures market have risen by 53 per cent in the past six months due to a decline in palm oil production in Malaysia. Soybean and mustard prices are also witnessing steady rise. Oilseed market experts say that the price of mustard, soya oil and palm oil is currently at the highest level in India and there is a possibility of further rise in prices in the coming days due to costlier imports from abroad. According to market sources, the wholesale price of raw mustard in the coun-

try was Rs 1,155 per 10 kg on Thursday, while the wholesale price of soya oil was Rs 995-1010 per 10 kg, while that of and palm oil (RBD) was Rs 935-945 per 10 kg. At the same time, the wholesale price of sunflower oil was Rs 1,180-1,220 per 10 kg. On Thursday, the CPO on Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) gained nearly 2 per cent to Rs 869.70 per 10 kg, while the CPO contract was broken by Rs 567.30 per 10 kg on May 7, 2020. Thus, CPO prices have risen by more than 53 per cent in the last six months. Ajay Kedia, director of Kedia Advisory, said the fall in palm oil production in Malaysia has led to a rise in prices. He said that

in view of the rise in prices of mustard and soybean in the country along with crude palm oil, there is a possibility of further rise in the prices of edible oil in the coming days. On the other hand, the prices of soybean and soy oil have also gone up in the global market. Lakshmichand Aggarwal, president of the Central Organisation for Oil Industry and Trade, said that the rise in prices of other edible oils, including palm oil and soy oil, has also affected the mustard oil, while the mustard crop remained low in the last season. Prices have got support. He said that the increase in prices will increase the interest of farmers in mustard sowing during the current Rabi season. On Thursday, the Mustard November contract price on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDX), the largest futures market for agricultural products in the country, rose to Rs 6,348 per quintal. At the same time, the November contract of soybean on NCDX rose by Rs 4,339 per quintal.

4.39 crore bogus ration cards cancelled since 2013: Food Min

New Delhi, Nov 6 (IANS): Around 4.39 crore ineligible/bogus ration cards have been weeded out across the country from 2013 to 2020 by state/UT governments, the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said on Friday. These ration cards were cancelled as part of the technology-driven PDS reforms initiated across the country to modernise the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) and to improve transparency and efficiency in operations. This was taken up through digitisation of ration cards/beneficiaries database, Aadhaar seeding, detection of ineligible/bogus ration cards, prevention of duplication of digitised data, updating migration/

deaths of beneficiaries during the run-up to the implementation of NFSA. Further, the respective quota under the National Food Security Act coverage is regularly utilised by states/UTs concerned for ‘Rightful Targeting’ of beneficiaries under the NFSA, i.e., inclusion/addition of other genuine and eligible beneficiaries/households by issuing new ration cards to them, while remaining within the respective ceiling limits of coverage defined for each state/UT under the Act, said the Ministry. The NFSA provides coverage for 81.35 crore beneficiaries to receive highly subsidised foodgrains through TPDS, which is nearly two third of the country’s population as per the census of 2011.

India smartphone market grows 17% to hit 54.3mn units in Q3: IDC N e w D e l h i , N ov 6 (IANS): Smartphone shipments in India reached 54.3 million units in the third quarter of this year, a growth of 17 per cent year-over-year, showed data from industry tracker International Data Corporation (IDC) on Friday. India was the only smartphone market in the top 3 to witness growth, as both the China and the US markets declined year-overyear in the July-September quarter, said IDC’s Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. The reopening of the economy in India with fewer restrictions was further fueled by pent-up demand in July and August and channel stocking in September to meet the upcoming Diwali quarter demand. In Q3, online channel share reached an all-time high of 48 per cent, growing by a healthy 24 per cent year-over-year. Offline channels registered a moderate 11 per cent YoY growth after a challenging first half of the year. “This healthy growth in shipments in 3Q20 is expected to continue through October and early November during the festive months,” Navkendar Singh, Research Director, Client Devices &

IPDS, IDC India, said in a statement. Xiaomi’s Redmi 8A Dual, Redmi 8, and Redmi Note 9 were the top three models nationally, despite Xiaomi facing supply constraints in the early weeks of the quarter. Samsung registered strong YoY growth of 38 per cent in Q3 with record shipments of 12.1 million units. India became Samsung’s largest smartphone market globally, ahead of the US in Q3, accounting for 15 per cent of its global shipments, IDC said. The online channel accounted for 43 per cent of Samsung shipments, witnessing unprecedented growth in Q3 with the Galaxy M21 and M31 featuring in the top 5 online models

nationally. With shipments of nine million units, Vivo grew by 27 per cent YoY in Q3. Realme grew 19 per cent YoY to eight million units in Q3, while OPPO registered 6.1 million shipments. The premium segment ($500+) witnessed a strong growth of 91 per cent YoY where Apple, Samsung, and OnePlus continued to be the top three players. “IDC expects the lowend and mid-range segment to continue being the volume driver. As consumer sentiment improves in the next few quarters, upgrades and affordable 5G offerings in the US$200-500 segment is expected to drive growth,” said Upasana Joshi, Associate Research Manager, Client Devices, IDC India.

Russia rejects reports of Presidential poll exposes America’s ‘perilous’ divides Putin planning to resign

The bill, published on a government website, is one of several being introduced following constitutional reforms that, among other things, would allow Putin to run again when his term ends in 2024. Former presidents already have lifetime immunity for crimes committed in office under legislation adopted after Putin first came to power. The new bill would also make it harder to revoke ex-presidents’ expanded immunity. It would require the upper house of parliament to vote overwhelmingly to revoke immunity on the strength of accusations by the lower house that the president had committed treason or another serious crime.

BANGKOK, NOV 6 (AP): Myanmar’s citizens go to the polls Sunday in an effort to sustain the fledgling democracy they helped install just five years ago. There are about 37 million registered voters, though turnout is expected to suffer because of a recent surge in coronavirus cases. In 2015, excitement was high over the opportunity to end more than five decades of army-directed rule. The National League of Democracy party of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi roared to a landslide election victory, and she became her country’s leader after many hard years at the forefront of a non-violent struggle against military dictatorships that won international admiration. This year, her party is

expected to again top the polls, but some critics feel her administration has failed to embrace democratic principles. Chances for real reform were always dicey, as the 2008 constitution drafted under the military assures it of enough seats in parliament to block charter changes. Key ministries are also under the control of the military. Critics accuse 75-yearold Suu Kyi and her party of being more concerned about entrenching itself in power than encouraging a broadbased democracy. “This time, neither Aung San Suu Kyi nor her party is bringing democracy to Myanmar. Instead, they are trying to bring in a oneparty democracy system,” charged Khin Zaw Win, director of the Tampadipa

Institute, a Yangon-based policy advocacy group. Enfeebling other parties has meant there has been little real debate about policies during the campaign. Myanmar needs a better political mix, he said. Even the voting process has become enmeshed in controversy, as the state election commission has been accused of conniving with Suu Kyi’s ruling party by cancelling voting in some areas where parties critical of the government were certain to win seats. The Union Election Commission insisted the voting was cancelled because of armed conflict with ethnic guerrillas in those areas. The decision was one of several points criticised this past week by Thomas Andrews, the UN special rapporteur for human rights in Myanmar. Buddhist-majority Myanmar, he said, would not be able to hold free and fair elections “as long as ... the right to vote is denied based on race, ethnicity or religion, as it is with the Rohingya.” Long-standing prejudice against the Muslim Rohingya minority, whom many consider to have immigrated illegally from South Asia even though their families have lived in Myanmar for generations, has deprived most of them of the rights of

citizenship. Western friends of Myanmar were shocked at the brutal 2017 counterinsurgency campaign by Myanmar’s army that drove about 740,000 Rohingya to flee into neighbouring Bangladesh, drawing accusations of genocide. It also sent Suu Kyi’s reputation with Western admirers into a tailspin when she failed to restrain the security forces. B u t f o r most people in Myanmar, the Rohingya are not an issue in the election. Andrews also said opposition political parties claim they are denied access to state media and their messages have been censored for criticizing government policies. Measures to control the coronavirus severely restricted traditional large-scale campaigning by all parties, but Suu Kyi benefits from frequent reports in state media about her carrying out her official duties, and from her regular updates about fighting the coronavirus streamed on her Facebook page. Her administration had already been criticised by free speech advocates. It scrapped some censorship and licensing laws, but aggressively employs defamation and telecommunications laws against journalists and activists critical of the government and the military.

Evacuation begins as Indonesia’s volcano rumbles

YOGYAKARTA (INDONESIA), NOV 6 (AP): Indonesian authorities began evacuating people living on the volatile Mount Merapi volcano’s fertile slopes on Friday following an increase in volcanic activity. The head of Yogyakarta’s Volca-

nology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center, Hanik Humaida, warned that Merapi, Indonesia’s most active volcano, could erupt at any time, possibly sending hot gas clouds down its slopes up to 5 kilometres (3 miles). Edy Susanto, a local disaster miti-

gation agency official, said about 300 people from two villages, mostly the elderly, pregnant women and children, were taken to emergency shelters in Central Java’s Magelang district. Susanto said emergency measures to evacuate people living within 6 kilometres (3.7 miles) of the crater’s mouth were being prepared as local administrations in Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces closely monitor the situation. On Thursday, Indonesia’s geological agency raised Merapi’s alert level to the second-highest level after sensors picked up increased activity. The 2,968-metre (9,737-foot) mountain is about 30 kilometers (18 miles) from the Yogyakarta city centre. About a quarter million people live within a 10-kilometre (6-mile) radius of the volcano. Merapi spewed ash and hot gas in a column as high as 6 kilometres (3.7 miles) into the sky in June, but no casualties were reported. Its last major eruption in 2010 killed 347 people and caused the evacuation of 20,000 villagers.

The yawning divides will threaten the next president’s ability to manage multiple crises: Daily coronavirus infections set a record this week, the economy is struggling to recover from the pandemic and many Americans are pressing for a reckoning on racial injustices. Trump and Biden voters, however, express strikingly different views on those challenges, according to AP VoteCast, a broad survey of the electorate. Biden voters overwhelming say they want the federal government to prioritise limiting the spread of the virus, even if that means further damage to the economy. But most Trump voters preferred an approach that focused on the economy. About half of Trump voters also called the economy and jobs the top issue facing the nation, while only 1 in 10 Biden voters named

China slams US for delisting Xinjiang’s ETIM as terrorist outfit

WASHINGTON, NOV 6 (IANS): Chief Pentagon Spokesman Jonathan Hoffman has denied a media report that claimed US Secretary of Defence Mark Esper was planning to resign. “The NBC story is inaccurate and misleading in many ways. To be clear, Secretary of Defence Esper has no plans to resign, nor has he been asked to submit a letter of resignation,” Xinhua news agency quoted Hoffman as saying in a tweet late Thursday. Citing three defence officials, NBC News had reported earlier in the day that Esper had “prepared his letter because he is one of the Cabinet officials long expected to be pushed out after the election”. Esper is helping lawmakers draft legislation to remove Confederate names from military bases, which could lead to a further rift between him and President Donald Trump, the report said. For months, US media has been reporting about the President’s frustration with Esper, who opposed using active-duty troops against civil unrest in June when Trump threatened to send military forces to crack down on nationwide demonstrations against racial injustice.

BEIJING, NOV 6 (PTI): China on Friday sharply criticised the US for delisting Xinjiang’s separatist militant outfit East Turkistan Islamic Movement from its list of terrorist organisations, saying it reflected Washington’s “double standards” on fighting global terrorism. In a major policy shift on November 5, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo lifted the ban on East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM), which was designated as a terrorist organisation by the UN’s 1267 counter-terrorism committee in 2002 for its alleged association with al-Qaida, Osama bin Laden and the Taliban. China accuses ETIM, which is entrenched in Uighur Muslim-majority province of Xinjiang province, of being responsible for numerous violent attacks in the province and outside, including one at the Forbidden City in Beijing, killing several people. The US in recent months has stepped up its criticism of China’s treatment of about 12 million minority Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang. Since last year, China has been under severe international criticism including from the UN and western countries over alle-

The resource-rich Xinjiang province is home to Turkik speaking Uighur Muslims. The province is restive for several years over settlements of Han Chinese. China defends the camps, describing the facilities as

life expectancy for men is just 68 years, according to data published by the World Bank in 2018, for more than two decades. He recently turned 68 in October. Putin previously dismissed speculation about his health as “gossip” in 2015 after he was not seen in public for more than 10 days. Although the president appeared to be in good health following his disappearance from public life, no explanation was given for why he cancelled a number of scheduled events. The rumours followed a move by the Russian government on Thursday to extend ex-presidents’ immunity from criminal prosecution to any offences committed in their lifetimes, not merely while in office.

through mail ballots — the method of voting preferred by many Democrats — while pursuing an aggressive legal strategy that could lead to further delays. “Except for the Civil War, I don’t think we’ve lived through any time as perilous as this in terms of the divisions,” said historian Barbara Perry, the director of presidential studies at the University of Virginia’s Miller Centre. Even after the 2000 election, when the Supreme Court ultimately intervened on Republican George W. Bush’s behalf, Democrat Al Gore quickly conceded and congressional leaders found areas of agreement on Capitol Hill. “To come out of something like this, you need to have a leader who can lead and willing followers,” Perry said. “I just don’t see willing followers on either side.”

The election solidified the parties’ competing coalitions. Biden relied on urban and suburban voters, particularly women, college-educated voters and people of color. Trump exceeded his turnout numbers from 2016 by relying on thousands of new supporters from rural, GOP pockets of white voters across the country. Results in high-turnout counties underscore that trend: Republican-leaning places became more Republican and Democratic areas more Democratic. The Democratic margin increased in 70% of the counties that went for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and the Republican margin widened in 56% of counties that Trump won that year, according to an Associated Press analysis of all counties that by Thursday evening had tallied more votes than in the last presidential election. That dynamic toppled some Democrats who had won seats in politically mixed areas by running as moderates. In Iowa, for example, Democrat Rep. Abby Finkenauer lost her reelection bid in the eastern part of the state as Trump bolstered his margins in rural areas such as Buchanan County just west of Dubuque. Trump won the rural county, which is 96% white, by 15 percentage points in 2016. That jumped to 21 percentage points this year.

it most important. On race and justice issues, Biden voters almost universally said racism is a serious problem in US society and in policing. But only a slim majority of Trump voters, who are overwhelming white, called racism a serious problem. Biden has tried to bridge this gap, often appealing to a sense of national unity and the “soul” of America. Trump often casts himself as a defender of his voters. He has threatened to withhold pandemic-related aid from states run by Democratic governors and disparaged cities run by Democrats. Many Democrats desperately hoped that Trump would suffer an embarrassing and broad defeat that would serve as a clear repudiation of Trump and his brand of politics. At the very least, they wanted an unambiguous mandate that would allow Biden to pursue ambitious policies on health care, education and the economy. Trump may lose, but strong GOP turnout in battlegrounds and unexpectedly solid victories for Republican candidates in Senate and House races made Tuesday far from a thumping. “There’s certainly not a clarion call to go in one direction or another. There’s a lot of confusion and chaos,” said civil rights leader Martin Luther King III, who supported Biden.

M O S C O W, N O V 6 (AGENCIES): The Kremlin has denied reports suggesting Vladimir Putin may be poised to quit as Russia’s president early next year due to health problems. The statement came after The Sun quoted Professor Valery Solovei, a Russian political pundit, who suggested earlier this week on a Moscow radio station that Putin was under pressure from his entourage to step down. Solovei was also quoted as claiming that the Russian president might have symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. However, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov responded to the reports on Friday by arguing they were “absolute nonsense”. “Everything is fine with the president,” Peskov said, adding that Putin was not planning to step down in the near future. Although the rumours about the president’s health are unsubstantiated, Solovei’s quotes were picked up by a number of UK tabloids on Friday. Rumours about Putin’s health have been a longstanding feature of Russian politics but have never been verified. The Russian president has been a dominant figure in the country, where

NEW YORK, NOV 6 (AP): Presidential elections can be revealing moments that convey the wishes of the American people to the next wave of elected officials. So far, the big reveal in the contest between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden is the extent of the cavernous divide between Republican and Democratic America, one that defines the nation, no matter which candidate ultimately wins. Voters from both parties turned out in droves to pick the next president, but as they did so, they found little agreement about what that president should do. Democrats and Republicans prioritised different issues, lived in different communities and even voted on different kinds of ballots. Whoever emerges as the winner, that division ensures that the next president will face significant gridlock in Congress, scepticism about the integrity of the vote and an agitated electorate increasingly divided by race, education and geography. Even the vote count itself threatens to further split Americans. Two days after polls closed, neither Trump nor Biden has earned the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. The Republican incumbent is encouraging his supporters to protest outside counting locations still sorting

he Covid-19 pandemic has dramatically changed consumer behaviour and Indian are now streaming videos for 10 hours and 54 minutes weekly on average -- outdoing the global average by three hours, according to a new report. Indian viewers consume the most online video content per week on average, with almost 70 per cent subscribing to new streaming services in the last six months during various states of lockdowns, said the report by Limelight Networks, a video delivery and edge cloud services provider. More than half (51 per cent) of Indians admit to sharing login information

or using someone else’s account to stream content. “Our research indicates that video buffering challenges amount to discontentment, and service providers have an opportunity here to win customers over by improving the streaming and video quality,” said Ashwin Rao, Country Director, Limelight Networks India. “There is a need for reliable infrastructure to be set up, to match the increasing appetite for new and improved online experiences”. Online video consumption has exceeded traditional broadcast viewing. India has witnessed one of the steepest in-

creases in online viewing as compared to traditional broadcast viewership. Indian viewers are watching 10.9 hours of online content on average, as compared to 8.7 hours of traditional broadcast viewing per week in 2020. “Almost half (47 per cent) of global consumers will cancel a streaming subscription due to high prices. Indian consumers’ behavior is consistent with the global average, with almost 46 percent indicating price sensitivity. YouTube dominates as the most-preferred platform for watching usergenerated content (65 per cent), followed by Facebook (16 per cent). “The choice of Indians is similar with varying averages, with YouTube and Facebook usage standing at 72 per cent and 12 per cent, respectively, the findings showed. The “State of Online Video” 2020 report was based on responses from 5,000 consumers in France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the UK and the US.

teenager has been arrested in Grand Prairie, Texas, for the murder of The Kids Are All Right star Eddie Hassell. As reported by Fox 4 News, 18-year-old D’jon Antone was arrested on Wednesday (November 4) with help from the US Marshal Services’ fugitive task force. Detectives believe Antone was trying to rob Hassell, who was targeted at random. They do not know why Antone was at Hassell’s apartment complex, as Antone did not live in the vicinity nor in the city of Grand Prairie. Antone has been charged with capital murder and is being held on $500,000 bail. “He literally didn’t have anything on him but my keys, as far as I knew,” Hassell’s girlfriend Andrea Trester told Fox 4 News. “His wallet was on the counter. His car keys were on my counter. I don’t understand why this happened. He was just so loved. So, so loved.” An affidavit states a surveillance video depicted “an unknown black male believed to be in his early teens fleeing the apartment complex” in Trester’s Nissan Sentra after the shooting. he Beatles’ company banked over £50 million last year. Apple Corps Limited’s annual accounts showed a turnover of £50,244,899 for the 12 months ending in January, the equivalent of £137,657 a day, despite the group having gone their separate ways more than 50 years ago. According to the Daily Mirror newspaper, of the figure, surviving members Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Ringo Starr, along with John Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono and George Harrison’s widow Olivia, received £6.1 million each. This was made up of £1,417,000 in dividends and £4,719,500 in “connection with the provision of pro-

motional services and name and likeness rights”. Apple Corps’ figures also showed they made a pretax profit of £8,606,191. A large chunk of the money comes from Las Vegas stage show ‘Love’, a joint venture with Cirque du

Soleil. The figures are a huge growth on the previous year, when turnover was £36.5 million with a pre-tax profit of £5.5 million, and shares to Paul, Ringo, Yoko and Olivia were £3,685,000. Meanwhile, 78-yearold Paul recently admitted

he was thankful he reunited with John before he was shot dead in 1980, a decade after the group’s difficult split. Speaking to John and Yoko’s son, Sean Ono Lennon for BBC Radio 2, he said: “I always say to people, one of the great things for me was that after all The Beatles rubbish and all the arguing and the business, you know, business differences really … that even after all of that, I’m so happy that I got it back together with your dad. “It really, really would have been a heartache to me if we hadn’t have reunited. It was so lovely too that we did and it really gives me sort of strength to know that.” (Contactmusic)

Horror film ‘Roh’ named Malaysia’s official entry for the 2021 Oscars

M

alaysian horror film Roh will represent the country at the 93rd Academy Awards in the Emir Ezwan’s directorial debut will be submitted for consideration in the International Feature Film category. The announcement was made by the National Film Development Corporation (Finas) on November 4, noting in a statement that its

Film Selection Committee “went through a detailed evaluation process based on filming criteria,” along with rules set by the Oscars organisers. The Academy is expected to announce the nominees on March 15, 2021. The awards ceremony will be held on April 25. It was originally scheduled on February 28, but was postponed due to the coro-

navirus pandemic. In a statement, Roh producers Kuman Pictures expressed their joy at the film’s selection for this fiercely competitive category, saying they were glad to be able to promote Malaysian talent to the rest of the world. Directed and written by Emir Ezwan, Roh revolves around a family who get an unexpected visit from a

strange girl with a haunting prediction. It premiered at the Singapore Film Festival in November 2019 and also made rounds in film festivals in Indonesia, Italy and New York. Roh got its theatrical release in Malaysia on August 6 after cinemas reopened in July following the relaxation of the country’s Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO). Roh is also Emir Ezwan’s debut feature film. In an interview with SINdie, he said he didn’t expect to create a horror film since he’s not a huge fan of the genre. “I’ve always wanted to make a feature but more of a thriller or a mystery. But definitely a dark film. So probably something like ROH without the horror or ghost element,” he said. Roh is the sixth Malaysian film to be submitted to the Oscars. The first was Saw Teong Hin’s The Princess of Mount Ledang in 2004. Last month, Singaporean director Anthony Chen’s Wet Season was selected to represent the city-state at the 2021 Oscars, also in the International Feature Film category. (NME)

He would want to be the batsman of the series. Last time, he and Smith came up against each other in India, Smith really dominated with three hundreds and Kohli didn’t get many,” Waugh said. “That would be at the back of his mind that last time he was outscored by Steve Smith. IPL Eliminator: SRH beat RCB by 6 wickets Footballer Eugeneson Lyngdoh

Abu Dhabi, Nov 6 (PTI): Jason Holder's allround show and Kane Williamson's solid unbeaten fifty helped Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets in the IPL Eliminator here on Friday. Holder first led SRH's brilliant bowling effort with figures of 3 for 25 to restrict batting-heavy RCB to a modest 131 for seven before he and Williamson steered SRH past the target with two balls to spare. Williamson (50 not out off 44) played a composed knock and together with Holder (24 nout off 20) shared 65 runs for the unbroken fifth wicket to take SRH home after early hiccups. SRH play Delhi Capitals in the Qualifier 2 on Sunday for a place in the final while the RCB were knocked out of the tournament. SRH didn't have the best of starts losing Sreevats Goswami early. Skipper David Warner (17) didn't last long, edging one to AB de Villiers behind the stumps off Mohammed Siraj. Manish Pandey (24) and Priyam Garg (7) too failed to rise to the occasion as they departed in quick succession. But then, Williamson

and Holder joined hands and played sensibly. They initially kept SRH in the hunt before accelerating towards the end to take their side home. Needing nine runs off the last over off Navdeep Saini, Holder struck two

boundaries to seal the win. Earlier, Holder led SRH's bowling attack with impressive figures of three for 25 and was ably supported by T Natarajan (2/33) as RCB found the going difficult from the beginning.

AB de Villiers' (56 off 43) scored a timely half-century to somewhat rescue RCB from a horrible start and take the team past the 120-run mark. RC B w i t n e s s e d a horrendous start to their innings as they lost two

wickets for 15 runs inside four overs after being sent into bat. Skipper Virat Kohli (6) , who opened the innings along side Devdutt Padikkal (1), was the first to depart, nicking one on the leg side to injured Wriddhiman Saha's replacement Sreevats Goswami off Holder. An over later, Holder picked up his second victim when Padikkal pulled one to Priyam Garg inside the circle as RCB slumped to 15 for two. Aaron Finch (32 off 30), who replaced Josh Philippe, and de Villiers then tried to stabilise the innings with a 41-run third wicket stand. But twin blows in the 11th over put paid to RCB's effort. First, Finch departed, caught by Abdul Samad off Shahbaz Nadeem (1/30) and then a ball later, Moeen Ali was caught short off the crease by a direct hit from Rashid Khan. Shivam Dube (8) didn't help his side's cause, so was Washington Sundar (5). In between, De Villiers brought up his 50 off 39 balls with a boundary off Holder, but he was soon sent packing by a gem of an yorker from Natarajan as RCB lost their last hope.

ready to be back with a bang

New Delhi, Nov 6 (IANS): Although Eugeneson Lyngdoh was not a part of India’s 2019 AFC Asian Cup campaign in the UAE, his team-mates and assistant coach Shanmugam Venkatesh believes the midfielder was instrumental to India’s qualification for the continental championship. ‘Eugene,’ as he is fondly called in the dressing room, had become a regular in the India starting XI around four years back, playing a crucial role in the midfield as India topped Group A of the Round 3 of the Qualifiers. However, it was during this campaign that the playmaker picked up an injury and hence was not fit to be picked in the final squad that made it to the UAE for the main tournament. Lyngdoh will, however, now make a comeback from injury in the upcoming Indian Super League season with SC East Bengal. “He had a huge contribution towards our qualification to AFC Asian Cup 2019. We missed him in UAE,” said former India captain Venkatesh while speaking on a live chat on AIFF TV. “His international career started late but on his debut, against Nepal in Guwahati, it didn’t look

like he was playing his first game for India.” Current India captain Sunil Chhetri stated that Lyngdoh was a big reason why the team made it to the continental stage in the tournament “The whole team and I missed him so much at the Asian Cup. He was an important reason why we qualified in the first case,” said Chhetri. Lyngdoh, on his part,

said injury is the last thing that any player thinks of at any given point of time in his career. “But when you get a bad injury, you require a lot of mental strength to keep going. I know I’ve lost a couple of years due to that injury, but now I am fit and ready to go out there. Now I have to maintain my fitness levels and be up for selection so that I can play,” said the 34-year-old.

Manitombi Singh

New Delhi, Nov 6 (IANS): The Sports Ministry on Friday sanctioned Rs 5 lakh for the family of deceased Manipuri footballer Manitombi Singh “to ease the financial crisis of the family”, the ministry said in a statement. “The grant of Rs 5 lakh was sanctioned under the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund for sportspersons,” said the ministry. Manitombi died in August this year aged 39. He was the only earning member of his family and is survived by his wife and a son. “Manitombi has contributed significantly to Indian football. He also contributed as a coach in Manipur. His demise is indeed a loss for the sporting community,” said Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju. “When we learnt about the financial crisis that the family is facing after his death, extending support to them was a duty upon us. It is of prime importance for the Government to support all our athletes, past and present, as well as those who have dedicated their life to

New Delhi, Nov 6 (IANS): Days after giving a mini “heart-attack” to her fans, ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu says she is totally fit, not just health-wise but also on the badminton court, and is looking forward to competing in the upcoming tournaments. In an exclusive interview with IANS, Sindhu opened up on how she coped up with the Covid-19 induced lockdown, her reaction to the Tokyo Olympics postponement, her preparation for the upcoming Asia Cup, and also her relationship with national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand. “It was quite difficult to suddenly stop a very active routine. But at the same time we all realised how important it was to pause everything and take care of ourselves,” Sindhu said about the nationwide-lockdown which was first put in place towards March end following the outbreak of novel coronavirus. “I tried to keep myself active by working out at home and that really helped me. I also spent a lot of time with my family and picked up some hobbies like painting,” she added. However, even during the lockdown, Sindhu stayed active in order to make sure she stayed as fit as possible. “I was not able to play on court, hence it was a bit hard when I started playing. But I think I am now fit on court as well and ready to go.” The Tokyo Olympics, which were slated to be held

in July-August this year, had to be postponed to summer of 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Sindhu, however, revealed that she was prepared for the postponement considering the situation and was thus not surprised by the development. “With everything that has been happening around the world, it was quite evident that Tokyo Games were going to be postponed and I had already started to prepare mentally.” The ace shuttler further said that the break has not broken her rhythm in her quest for the elusive Olympic gold. “I have been preparing myself mentally and physically to compete in 2021. We are not too far away and this is a worldwide scenario, hence every athlete is going through the same and we will all have to adapt, train, and give our best in Tokyo,” Sindhu said. In September, the reigning world champion had pulled out of Denmark Open. After that, she had agreed to play in the Uber Cup, which was eventually postponed. Now, the next tournament in which she

he was “not even surprised any more” after receiving the racist abuse and described it as “unbelievable” and “disgusting”. The account that sent the racist messages to Sessegnon has since been removed from Instagram. Manchester City’s England forward Raheem Sterling said last month that football authorities and social media platforms need to “step up” and “take proper action” in tackling online abuse. It followed a study by the Professional Footballers’ Association that said 43% of Premier League players experienced “targeted racist abuse”.

would be competing is the Asian leg of the BWF World Tour. “I am really looking forward to the tournaments in Asia. I will be back on the court after a long time. The training has been going well and this break has also helped me learn and improve as an athlete. I am taking a lot of positive out of this break and using this time to work on things I have not had the time for due to the hectic schedule,” Sindhu said as she remains upbeat to once again to rule the court. Recently, there was a report which claimed that Sindhu had a rift with Gopichand and that she was not happy with the training facilities for the national camp. However, Sindhu rejects that allegation. “Gopi sir is my coach and he has helped me immensely. I do not have issues with him and I have kept him informed about my decision to train in England due to the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) analysis,” said Sindhu. In order to work on her nutrition and recovery, Sindhu is currently in England and working with Rebecca Randell at the GSSI. “I have been working with GSSI for the past four years and this is a long process. We have been working on many aspects such as nutrition and recovery and this has been helping me immensely,” she said.
