Himanta Sarma on Naga political mission

Urges Rio to convene spl NLA session to endorse OctOBER 15 resolutionS

“There is a set of government officials, who is engaged actively with the NSCN (I-M) collective leadership, and I am convinced there will be some good news at some point of time. But these are very complex issues you cannot get a solution just out of one, two or three meetings... This is a complex issue and you need to resolve it bit by bit. “The officials in the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the NSCN (I-M) are making progress, but what is happening or what has happened or what will happen will be difficult for us to comment at this stage. “Solution has to be one, but let the discussions be concluded with NSCN (I-M) first and then we will take the common draft to everybody we should go step by step,” the NEDA convenor told the news channel. It may be mentioned that the purpose of the November 5 joint press meeting was to primarily bring both PDA and NPF together on the same page (after NPF formed its own PAM) over the Naga political issue and also to endorse the October 15 resolution-- “one solu-

tion for one people”, but it remained deadlocked as NPF was yet to endorse the resolutions. Though both Rio and Zeliang addressed the joint press conference, nothing came out of it since there was no breakthrough. Instead, NPF leader T.R. Zeliang proposed formation of a new Legislators Forum with a new name and headed by the chief minister and not the Speaker. Zeliang also requested the convening of a special session of the assembly to adopt resolutions on solution to the Naga political issue. At the joint press meet, chief minister Neiphiu Rio implied that there was no need to form another new legislators forum of all parties since JLF exists with MLAs from other parties except NPF. He instead requested NPF to rejoin the JLF. He also rejected the proposal that he head the proposed forum since it was to be anall party forum and that the Speaker NLA was the right person to head it. Media persons could not ask any questions since the meeting was called off soon after the leaders had spoken.

US President-elect Biden calls for unity Washington, Nov 8 (AGENCIES): Presidentelect Joe Biden addressed a deeply divided nation Saturday night, turning to the challenges ahead by grounding his victory speech in the spirit of compromise, asking supporters of President Donald Trump to give him a chance, and calling on all Americans to turn the page from what he described as a “grim era of demonization.” Biden made that plea for unity and understanding in his home town of Wilmington, Delaware, at an extraordinary moment in American history when the current occupant of the White House showed no indication that he plans to concede to his rival and continued to push the fiction on Twitter that he had won the election, while making baseless accusations about how the election was stolen from him. After jogging on stage wearing a mask, Biden repeated his promise that he would seek to unify rather than divide. He pledged to govern by the creed that he does not see blue states and red states, but only the United States. Biden noted that he

KOHIMA, NOV 8 (NPN): Assam Finance minister and North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convener Himanta Biswa Sarma arrived Kohima on a one-day lightning visit Sunday to meet with state chief minister Neiphiu Rio. According to informed sources, Sarma who has of late, become the BJP’s ‘man in the North East’ after BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav was shifted, has been keeping in touch with both chief minister Neiphiu Rio and opposition NPF leader T.R. Zeliang over the Naga political issue. Sarma’s visit to Kohima also assumes significance in the light of discussions held between chief minister Neiphiu Rio and leader of opposition T.R. Zeliang on the vexed Naga political issue with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on October 20. The sources also disclosed that Sarma, was

concerned that NPF has not endorsed the October 15 resolutions adopted at the meeting of various political parties, NGOs, Tribe Hohos and civil society groups. Sources privy to the meeting disclosed to Nagaland Post that as NEDA convener, Sarma was assigned by Union Home minister Amit Shah with the task of studying the political situation in Nagaland and also hold discussions with JLF, PDA and NPF including civil society groups. Sarma is tasked with getting everyone on board before a final agreement was inked over the protracted Naga issue. The main point that the Union Home minister had focussed on was– to have all political parties and legislators come together so as to endorse the October 15 resolutions. During the closed-door meeting on Sunday, Sarma requested chief minister Neiphiu Rio to convene a special session of Nagaland

G U WA H AT I , N OV 8 (AGENCIES): Mizoram on Sunday assured Assam that it will withdraw its forces from the tense inter-state border areas, but Dispur said that even though it welcomed the decision, it was “waiting to see action on the ground”. Mizoram made the offer during a video conference between the chief secretaries which was chaired by Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla. Assam claims that Mizoram forces, including its IRB and Mizoram Police have been camping in various places inside Assam’s territory for nearly a month now. “As of now, their (Mizoram’s) forces are stationed at five locations inside Assam’s territory in the two districts of Cachar and Karimganj. We have not seen any sign of withdrawal till (Sunday) evening,” DIG (Southern Range) DK Dey said over phone. Meanwhile, addressing the press after the meeting chaired by the Union Home Secretary, Mizoram chief secretary L. Chuaungo said a unanimous decision was taken that Mizoram will withdraw its forces from the disputed areas and the blockade on NH-306 on the Assam side will be lifted.

Legislative Assembly to endorse the October 15 resolutions. Earlier, Sarma had also reminded NPF to endorse the October 15 consultative meeting resolutions. Sources added that Sarma was also concerned about the frosty relationship between PDA and NPF following the withdrawal of the latter from the Joint Legislators’ Forum at the present crucial juncture. Before his departure to Guwahati, Sarma also held a brief meeting with Nagaland BJP leaders, sources told PTI. Meanwhile, Sarma told a news channel that “It was only a courtesy call to chief minister Rio and no serious discussions were held.”

sought the nation’s highest office “to rebuild the soul of America, to rebuild the backbone of this nation, the middle class and to make America respected around the world again.” He acknowledged how Black voters carried him across the finish line both in the primary and then again in the general election by increasing turnout in key battleground states. But it was Biden’s entreaties to Trump voters, who also turned out in huge numbers on Election Day, that were the most striking as he faces the daunting task of governing in a sharply polarized nation. “For all those of you who voted for President Trump, I understand the

disappointment tonight. I’ve lost a couple of times myself. But now, let’s give each other a chance,” Biden said. “It’s time to put away the harsh rhetoric, lower the temperature, see each other again, listen to each other again. And to make progress we have to stop treating our opponents as enemies.” Alluding to scripture, he added: “This is the time to heal in America.” Cognizant of the historical import of the moment, the Biden campaign opened the event by having Vice President-elect Kamala Harris introduce her running mate. Harris will be the first woman -- and the first woman of color -- to serve as vice president.

*6 deaths not due to Covid-19 *3 deaths in under investigation

DIMAPUR, NOV 8 (NPN): Nagaland on Sunday reported 19 new COVID-19 positive cases-- 12 in Kohima, 2 in Dimapur, 3 in Mon and 1 each in Mokokchung and Tuensang, taking the tally to 9474. Further, out of 9474 positive cases, the distribution across various categories of people include 4074 from the armed forces/ police, 1676 returnees, 3262

traced contacts and 462 frontline workers.

India’s COVID tally crosses 85L mark PTI: India’s COVID-19 caseload went past 85 lakh (85,07,754) with 45,674 infections being reported in a day, while the death toll climbed to 1,26,121 with 559 new fatalities, Health Ministry stated.

NEW DELHI, NOV 8 (AGENCIES): All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) director Dr. Randeep Guleria has said that common people in India will have to wait for another year to get vaccinated, while reminding that the coronavirus infection “will not vanish” with vaccination. Dr. Guleria said that the virus will not “vanish with vaccination” but is likely to help with rapid herd immunity. The vaccination will also aid breaking the chain of transmission with fewer people getting infected. Dr. Guleria, also a member of the national task force on the coronavirus management in the country, has said that common people will have to wait till 2022 for a shot of the coronavirus vaccine. The AIIMS director said it will take “more than a year” for a coronavirus vaccine to be easily available in

Dr. Randeep Guleria

the Indian markets. In an interview with CNN-News18 channel, Dr. Guleria said for normal people, it will take “more than a year”. “In our country the population is large; we need time to see how the vaccine can be bought from the market like a flu vaccine and take it. That will actually be the ideal situation,” he said. When asked about the challenges India would have after a coronavirus vaccine is available, the AIIMS director said the prime focus

would be its distribution so that it reaches every part of the country. The second challenge, Dr Guleria said, would be to figure out the positioning of another vaccine that comes out later and is seen as more effective than the first one. “So if we have a vaccine that comes out later and is seen to be more effective than the first one, how do we position it? How do we do a course correction? How to then decide who needs vaccine A and who needs vaccine B? A lot of decisions need to be taken as we go along,” AIIMS director said. The AIIMS chief also expressed concern about a surge during the festival season. The doctor said that if cases increase, officials may have to consider regional lockdowns, and local containment zones may have to be identified.

KOHIMA, NOV 8 (NPN): In a bid to contain further spread of COVID-19 cases in the State Capital, Association of Kohima Municipal Wards Panchayat (AKMWP) has decided to make wearing of face masks at public places compulsory from Monday and strictly enforce it. Directing everyone moving in and around the Kohima municipality areas to wear face masks, the association warned that names of those violating its directive would be collected and compelled to buy masks on the spot for Rs 30 from COVID ward committee members on duty. AKMWP president Neibulie Kiewhuo said at least 10 volunteers, including senior leaders of the wards, would enforce

the rule in their respective wards as requested by Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) to combat the pandemic in Kohima. It has been lear nt that KMC administrator Kovi Meyase will officially kick off the campaign at Old MLA junction here at 7 a.m. Identity cards for COVID-19 ward committee members will also be issued by the administrator on the occasion. It may be mentioned that the AKMWP president had written to all wards chairmen under Kohima Municipality to enforce the directive in the interest and safety of the public. It may also be recalled that the State government on April 16, 2020 made it mandatory for all to wear face masks in all public spaces and workplaces, to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

ZSU (N) demands Tening-Leikie road connectivity Kids found to have antibodies that

DIMAPUR, NOV 8 (NPN): Zeme Leisiname Bau or Zeme Students’ Union Nagaland (ZSU-N) has strongly condemned the alleged inaction and delay in executing the long-cherished TeningLeikie road. (More on p-3) Alleging that work on the project was diluted for profit of individuals with party affiliations, union’s president Aakam Pame and social & cultural secretary Kedirangbe Pame said the 37.5-k road from Tening in Peren to Leikie in Assam was sanctioned with 100% Central assistance under North East Road Sector Development Scheme. Pointing out that the road serves as a lifeline to almost 10 villages in Peren District and an inter-State link, ZSU (N) said it has been in a pathetic condition for Tening-Leikie road in deplorable condition. showed interest to address the grievances of the people and their sentiments. The road has been abandoned without any repairing work take place, even as the voice of general public for a good road remain unheard despite repeated requests, the statement lamented. ZSU (N) said patients were facing lot of hardships due to the poor road condition, with pregnant women being the hardest hit as they are often forced to deliver on the way to hospitals, adding that many lives have been lost in this manner. As qualified school teachers appointed at remote places often refuse to join due to bad road, children have to walk to schools outside their villages and return carrying ration for home as there is no proper supply of essentials commodities.

could protect against COVID: study

NEW DELHI, NOV 8 (IANS): Scientists have found that some people, notably children, have antibodies reactive to SARS-CoV-2 in their blood, despite not ever having being infected with the virus. These antibodies are likely the result of exposure to other coronaviruses, which cause a common cold and which have structural similarities with SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for Covid-19, said the study published in the journal Science. The researchers made this discovery while developing highly sensitive antibody tests for Covid-19. To see how well their assay tests were performing, they compared the blood of patients with Covid-19 to patients who had not had the (Cont’d on p-6) disease. Surprisingly, they

found that some people who had not been exposed to SARS-CoV-2 had antibodies in their blood which would recognise the virus. To confirm their findings, they analysed over 300 blood samples collected before the pandemic, between 2011 and 2018. Nearly all samples had antibodies that reacted with common cold coronaviruses, which was expected given how everyone was exposed to these viruses at some point in their lives. However, a small fraction of adult donors, about 1 in 20, also had antibodies that cross-reacted with SARS-CoV-2, and this was not dependent on recent infection with a common cold coronavirus. Notably, such cross-reactive antibodies were found much more frequently in blood samples

taken from children aged 6 to 16. “Our results show that children are much more likely to have these cross-reactive antibodies than adults. More research is needed to understand why this is, but it could be down to children being more regularly exposed to other coronaviruses,” said lead author of the study Kevin Ng from Francis Crick Institute in England. “These higher levels we observed in children could also help explain why they are less likely to become severely ill with Covid-19. There is no evidence yet, however, that these antibodies prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection or spread.” Researchers tested the antibodies they found in blood from uninfected people to confirm they are able to neutralise SARS-CoV-2. Mizoram to withdraw forces from Assam border

Aizawl/GUWAHATI, Nov 8 (PTI/AGENCIES): Mizoram would withdraw a section of its forces from the border with Assam and BSF personnel will be deployed in their place, a senior official here said on Sunday. The decision was taken at a meeting, chaired by Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla, between the chief secretaries of Assam and Mizoram, he said. Addressing the press after the meeting, Mizoram Chief Secretary Lalnunmawia Chuaungo said a unanimous decision was taken that Mizoram will withdraw its forces from the disputed areas and the blockade on National Highway-306 on the Assam side will be lifted. The traffic movement from Assam is likely to resume on Sunday evening or Monday, he said. Residents of Lailapur village and nearby areas in Assam’s Cachar district are on an economic blockade since October 28, demanding the withdrawal of Mizoram forces from what they claimed as Assam’s territory, officials said. Mizoram refused to budge, claiming that state forcesare deployed within

platoons of BSF will be de ployedat Vairengte, two platoons at Saihapui ‘V’ village in Kolasib district and one company at Thinghlun village in the Mamit district. However, a section of the state forces will remain deployed on the disputed areas to maintain peace among the Mizo people, he said.

its territory. Chuaungo said the main agenda of the chief secretary- level meeting was to find a short-term solution – withdrawal of forces and lifting of the blockade. “We will pull out a part of our forces to deploy BSFpersonnel in the disputed areas. The blockade in Assam will also be lifted and traffic movement is likely to resume on Sunday evening or Monday,” he said. Chuaungo said the Centre was keen on resolving the inter-state dispute between Mizoram and Assam, and is constantly in touch with both the governments. Three companies of the Border Security Force (BSF) have arrived in the state on Saturday, he said. One company and two

The border dispute between Mizoram and Assam intensified on October 9 when a hut and plantations were destroyed allegedly by officials of Assam’s Karimganj district on a farmland near Thinghlun village in west Mizoram’s Mamit district. The tension further escalated when residents

of Vairengte in Mizoram’s Kolasib set on fire several temporary bamboo huts and stalls during a violent clash on the night of October 17. At least seven people from Mizoram and few others from Assam were injured in the clash. Though several dialogues were held, normalcy could not be restored in the area.

School blasts triggered systematically; probe underway: Assam Police Amid escalating tension along the inter-state border with Mizoram, Assam Police special DGP (border), Mukesh Agrawal informed that an inquiry was underway in connection with the Friday night’s explosions in a lower primary school at Upper Painom near the interstate boundary in Cachar district of Assam, reports The Northeast Today.. A primary school building near the Assam-Mizoram boundary in the Cachar district was destroyed in an explosion carried out by unknown miscreants. “The three explosions were triggered by miscreants in a systematic and planned manner and the blasts have caused extensive damage to the school,” Agrawal said after assessing the condition of the school along with district officials. Countering claims by the Mizoram government that the school was within its jurisdiction, Agarwal clarified that the Assam government established the school in the year 2003 with around 30-40 students, and it was in Assam’s territory. The top police official disclosed that the Assam government has

requested the central government for instituting a probe by a central agency into the earlier bomb blast that took place at Dholakhal LP School under Khulicherra Part II. Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal apprised Union Home Minister Amit Shah about the situation along the border and requested the central government to take necessary steps to maintain peace and harmony. The special DGP (border) also appealed to the people not to be provoked by the recent incidents, as matters have been taken up at the proper level for resolving the border imbroglio. Cachar Deputy Commissioner, Keerthi Jalli, said that an inquiry was in progress to trace those behind the blast and they have filed an FIR in connection with the incident. Jalli, however, said that there was no casualty as the school was closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “The school falls under the Narsingpur education block of Cachar district and receives mid-day meals under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan,” she said.

NSCN (I-M) dismisses claims of Assam Rifles, Manipur police DIMAPUR, NOV 8 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) has denied Manipur Police’s claim of an encounter between its cadres and Assam Rifles/police in the neighbouring State’s Bishnupur district on Saturday, wherein Jaiolen Chiru and Jenthaingam Longmei were reportedly injured and hospitalised. In a statement, the organisation clarified that there was no

encounter whatsoever and termed the claim of recovery of arms and ammunitions by Manipur Police as baseless. According to NSCN (I-M), what actually happened was that the police and Assam Rifles personnel came in civvies and surrounded the house where its members were staying and opened indiscriminate firing, wherein two its cadres were injured.

The duo were then reportedly admitted to a hospital and the police are now awaiting their formal arrest upon recovery. The organisation further refuted the allegation levelled by Assam Police against its members Khampai W and Khunghee Mikkam, who were arrested on Friday in Tezpur, Assam as being factually incorrect. BJP targets MDA ministers on coal issue

Correspondent

Shillong, Nov 8: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a constituent of the National People’s Party (NPP)-led ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) has yet again taken a dig at incumbent ministers by stating that “in an interesting revelation, a new episode to cover up the illegal coal transportation and to get more coal out of the State without having any legal obligation is on some minister’s agenda”. “Ministers who were involved in the rampant illegal transportation of coal have gone to such an extent that the Court order passed in favour of Salgira R Marak, Director of Printing and Stationery has been overlooked but desperate attempt to amend the service book was made to remove Salgira R Marak from the post. Plan to take over the Printing and Stationery Department was most probably to print ‘fake challans’ to transport coal illegally. The access to the department by these ministers will enable them to personalise the printing of challans at their mercy and the State Government will lose huge revenue which cannot be allowed for the sake of justice,” Meghalaya State BJP vice president Bernard N Marak stated in an emailed statement issued

on Sunday. Interestingly, Marak did not name any ministers in the statement, even as one of the two BJP legislators- Alexander Laloo Hek is a cabinet minister in the Conrad Sangma ministry. “Recently, High Court passed an order in favour of Salgira R Marak, Director of Printing and Stationery, Government of Meghalaya quashing his appointment as the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) but relentless effort is being made to take over the department which prints all Government challans, forms, PWD cheque books etc. BJP is keeping an eye on the activities of certain ministers who are desperately trying to manipulate the system by appointing their loyal officers into the high ranked post without any legal proceedings,” the statement said, adding that Salgira R Marak who is the Director of Printing and Stationery has been “targeted by some ministers” for failing to comply with their dictates. “After the disappearance of huge amounts of

coal, attempts are now being made to print ‘fake challans’. Ministers are desperate to take control of the Printing and Stationery Department because all the challans required for the transportation of coal are printed here,” the BJP statement said, adding that it is the “only option left” to “illegally legalise” the illegal coal transportation. “These ministers want to put their men in the high post so that they can have access to the printing of the ‘challans. The Printing and Stationery Department has a major role to play as these ‘fake challans’ will benefit the ministers but incur huge loss of revenue on the State. Some of these ministers also attempted to amend the service rule to change the director from his post in spite of the matter being in the purview of the Court,” the BJP statement said. Reacting to lone Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator, Saleng A Sangma’s allegation that BJP is selective in raising corruption issues, the BJP leader described allegation a standard ignorance.

sion of arms and ammunition and had no connection with the ambush on Assam Rifles in Nagaland as alleged by the Assam Police in the media, the statement asserted. Dism issing the c ha rges against its members outright as baseless, NSCN (I-M) urged both Manipur Police and Assam Police to refrain from cooking up stories to suit their interests.

Nitish factor in Bihar

E

xit polls released after the conclusion of threephased Bihar assembly elections project a distinct advantage for the Mahagathbandan( Grand Alliance) comprising of RJD-Cong-Left parties, suggesting the distinct possibility that the National Democratic Alliance(NDA) is on its way out of power in the politically important state. As per an overwhelming majority of polls, the Mahagathbandhan may make a clean sweep and its dominance could be near complete if one goes by the maximum number of seats the opposition alliance is projected to win according to some exit polls. While News 18-Today Chanakya exit poll predicts a maximum of 191 seats for the GA, the India Today- Axis polls give the alliance a maximum of 161 seats in the 243member assembly. Republic TV-Jan Ki Baat exit poll projects a maximum of 138 seats for the GA. The majority mark in the 243-member assembly is 122. The election was fought mostly on local issues but the NDA also played the national card by pressing Modi to campaign for Nitish Kumar who is looking for a fourth innings. Modi campaigned aggressively, attacking Tejashwi and Rahul whom he referred to as double yuvraj(crown prince) who will face the same fate in Bihar as they did in UP. The incumbent NDA government had been impressing upon voters to choose chief minister Nitish Kumar, lest they want a return to the “goonda raj” of the Lalu Prasad Yadavled Rashtriya Janata Dal era. However NCRB data showed that total crimes have also been steadily increasing with 189,696 and 236,055 crimes being reported in 2016 and 2017 respectively. In addition, Bihar Police data shows a steady increase since 2001.Thus, nobody was willing to buy the ‘goonda raj’ jingle anymore. The other interesting aspect of Bihar election was that Lok Jan Shakti ‘s young leader Chirag Paswan(son of late Ram Vilas Paswan, who was minister in the NDA) had gone all guns blazing against Nitish. In his campaign speeches Chirag batted for a BJP chief minister minus Nitish, making it clear he would remain with NDA after the polls. The LJP wanted to play safe with the NDA and had hoped to play the kingmaker. This could have been possible only if the NDA, or the GA for that matter, narrowly miss the half-way mark requiring assistance from parties outside the alliance. As per all exit polls, such as the India Today- Axis, Chirag Paswan’s party may have cost the NDA the election in nearly two dozen seats. The LJP had played spoilsport in 2005 assembly elections when it decimated the RJD to pave way for the NDA. The Bihar polls turned into a battle of perception between Nitish versus the rest. Nitish was attacked by the Mahagathbandhan over rising unemployment, proliferation of alcohol despite prohibition and economic stagnation. It was, as per some media, a battle between Nitish versus others. This may have prompted Nitish to belatedly announce that it would be his last election in the state. Perhaps, Nitish was hoping that this would cut ice among the voters and win some sympathy. However, the young voters this time were not interested in the past. They were convinced that Nitish was about the past and had failed while the young Tejashwi spoke their language. If results prove exit poll projections right then it will be a blow for the BJP at the Centre which is eyeing to wrest West Bengal from the Trinamool Congress.

DailyDevotion The Unrivaled Power of Prayer

We do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. —Romans 8:26 We realize that we are energized by the Holy Spirit for prayer; and we know what it is to pray in accordance with the Spirit; but we don’t often realize that the Holy Spirit Himself prays prayers in us which we cannot utter ourselves. When we are born again of God and are indwelt by the Spirit of God, He expresses for us the unutterable. “He,” the Holy Spirit in you, “makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God” (Romans 8:27). And God searches your heart, not to know what your conscious prayers are, but to find out what the prayer of the Holy Spirit is. The Spirit of God uses the nature of the believer as a temple in which to offer His prayers of intercession. “…your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit…” (1 Corinthians 6:19). When Jesus Christ cleansed the temple, “…He would not allow anyone to carry wares through the temple” (Mark 11:16). The Spirit of God will not allow you to use your body for your own convenience. Jesus ruthlessly cast out everyone who bought and sold in the temple, and said, “My house shall be called a house of prayer…. But you have made it a ‘den of thieves’ ” (Mark 11:17). Have we come to realize that our “body is the temple of the Holy Spirit”? If so, we must be careful to keep it undefiled for Him. We have to remember that our conscious life, even though only a small part of our total person, is to be regarded by us as a “temple of the Holy Spirit.” He will be responsible for the unconscious part which we don’t know, but we must pay careful attention to and guard the conscious part for which we are responsible.

Wasteful expenses; Need to correct priorities

(India is among the top five disaster-hit countries with $ 79.5 billion losses. Modi’s national dialogue can tick right boxes) eriodic festive postlockdown (LD) sales are not indicators of the economy booming for sustainable development as slump may loom large. The problems abound in finances, high government and corporate debt and pressure on banking hit by low unsustainable interest rates. The Indian economy has the capability to sprint at 9 percent with extreme favourable policies and around 7 percent with constraints but actually the September growth in some sectors and contraction in others raises concern of sustainability. The narrative that the six-month LD has caused massive damage to the economy is partially correct. It aggravated a situation contracting for about 22 months. The 23 percent contraction (minus growth) is only an indicator that doctors failed to read the pulse as physicians are wary now about the illusory disease and its existence. The LD has certainly exacerbated a situation which could have been stemmed with the right prescription. The ratings firm ICRA has sounded an alarm that

P

the September recovery may not be sustainable. It says that intra-state goods movement and GST e-way bills increased 9 percent from a year earlier against August contraction of 3.5 percent. But rise in auto production (11 percent), power generation, petrol sales are not reflected in actual retail growth. Apart the calculations are against the massive 23.9 percent slump. It does not see it sustaining beyond November festivities. The part positive outlook on exports makes ICRA cautious as improvements in non-oil merchandise exports may get hit in the fresh waves of supposed covid19 emerging in many trading partners. The HDFC bank CEO Aditya Puri says the problems are not over. Cars and TV sets flying off the shelves hold out promise of a return of 9 percent growth. But the rebound is patchy and the country may end up with 9.5 percent contractions at the end of the year, as per RBI projections. He says if semiurban rural India grows and there are right infrastructure spends 7 percent growth is not difficult though it might take three years. Skewed LD has devastated the hotel, tourism and eatery industry that just started to get even with

finances after a two-decade struggle. Even private health care sector is hit. Nobody questions how the car scrapping policy costs citizens a fortune, severe wealth loss and increases poverty. It merely helps middle men and politicians in cahoots with auto sharks. It needs a deep probe. India’s manufacturing share in the economy has gradually reduced. While the Make in India initiative at its nascent stage may turn the tide, the competition in the region is high with Thailand, MalayShivaji sia, Vietnam and Bangladesh. Services have done relatively better in India. Without manufacturing it may not be easy to sustain it. The right spend is in question. Since 2016, the country is through many man-made critical situations that contracted the economy continuously with some better patches in between. If the surging gold prices are taken as indicator, it means apprehensive investors are shying away from making the right investments. The country has taken to wrong priorities. The excessive repeated rebuilding of highways or choking national capital territory with roads that are not needed like the one

proposed to Baghpat or projects like Jewar airport or invasive continual construction of excessive infrastructure. Extensive concrete constructions as in Bihar, Odisha, in the new state capitals in Chhattisgarh and Andhra, eroding hills in Uttarakhand, Himachal, North-East and J&K are damaging natural systems of the Himalayas and fragile ecology elsewhere. It is a case for constructing less as the natural disasters are man induced. The recent flooding of Hyderaor a few Sarkar bad years back in Kerala is testimony to the massive damage human hands have done. The cost of the disasters are estimated but not taken into financial accounts. Rather these become sources of further erosion of financial mismanagement. The UN office for Disaster Risk Reduction has revealed that India is among the top five disaster-hit countries with $ 79.5 billion losses between 1998 and 2017. Yes, the country has been committing the mistakes continuously irrespective of the party in power. Wasteful expenditure has become a national character. Promoting dairying in Nagaland

here exists a huge scope for dairy development in the state of Nagaland, which could provide livelihood opportunities to a large number of people. While infrastructure for milk processing has been established by cooperatives, the real challenge is the genetic improvement of milch cattle population so that the production could be augmented with the rising demand for milk. Promoting dairying in Nagaland is always a challenging task especially when consumption of milk is not a preferred option for many people in the state. Traditionally, the large populace in the state are inclined towards rearing pigs as pork is a staple diet in the region. Historically farmers in Nagaland were never inclined to rearing cattle for production of milk. Since the last decade, Nepali Khutiwalas (those involved in rearing cattle) have been increasingly involved in milk production and marketing. The apex body –the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) of the Government of India, which implemented the three phased Operation Flood ((1970-1996) leading to India’s emerging as the World’s biggest milk producer is supporting the dairy development in Nagaland. As a result, milk chilling and pasteurized plants in Dimapur, Kohima and Mokokchung districts have been established and these facilities are catering to sizable urban population with value added milk and milk products. “Gestation period for piggery is not less than 10 months. During this time, the working capital requirement is high in terms of feed and other costs. In the case of dairying, farmers need two cows, and one can be ‘in-milk’ and the other one is in a ‘dry’ phase. Strategically, when a farmer purchases two cows, he has the scope to get milk at least from one cow immediately,” Dr Simon Ao, till recently the Project Director of Nagaland State Dairy Cooperative Federation (NSDCF), said. At present, there are 72 Dairy Cooperatives Societies (DCS) in the state. These DCSs belong to three district milk unions – Kohima, Dimapur and Mokokchung. Dairy activities mostly confined to these three districts of Nagaland. Especially in the Kohima and Diampur milk unions, a growing number of individual Naga women or groups are now venturing into the dairy business. The department of animal husbandry of Nagaland has been making attempts to encourage farmers to take up dairying as a livelihood option because of growth prospects. The infrastructure for the processing milk has been established in the state. In Dimapur, a dairy plant with 20,000 litres milk processing capacity per day is established while Kohima has a processing plant with 2,000 litre per day milk processing capacity. The central government has sanctioned 1000 litre milk processing capacity per day plant at Mokokchung. However, three plants owned by

central vista costing over Rs 22,000 crore, irrational Rs 1.1 lakh crore bullet train, Rs 6000 crore high-speed rail corridors or several sixlane toll highways (many of these are being rebuilt). The nation has not learnt from the mistakes of hi-fi Hyderabad, Bengaluru or collapse of Amaravati and Raipur. One could argue that people need houses. But a third of new residential constructions are unoccupied in most cities. Jewar or Amaravati type constructions are promoting speculative activities causing severe drain on economy, enough pollution, difficult living conditions and citizens being penalized. The banking system, once world’s best, is collapsing for irrational projects, populist accounts, larger non-repayment of debt and higher operational costs. India is now one of the most degraded countries in the planet with no national policy on spending, securing of public sector units, banking, farms and land use or car scrapping that benefit the sharks. The 2014 election generated hopes of corrections. The BJP made right noises before the polls. Narendra Modi instilled hope. But somewhere the system got

derailed and perpetuation of irrational policies continued. The knee-jerk reactions like demonetisation, stressing on wrong construction priorities at the cost of denuding the banks, imposing high cost on travels through high fuel prices, cess and tolls (for which the previous regimes were criticised) only has exacerbated the economy. The promised jobs, a crore a year, could not be provided as the state went into penury. The LD has now made income sustainability difficult as job losses rise despite unlock. The exploitative situation, legally denying rights to the labour and farmers, reminds of the heavy industrialization of 18th and 19th century Europe with its concomitant exploitation leading to the rise of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Course correction is imperative to check slippage to a deep crisis symbolized by many delayed payments by official organisations during December 2019 and March 2020. The private sector during that period itself had started tightening belts. A national dialogue is needed to turn the morass into an opportunity. Modi skilled at taking decisions is capable of initiating it and tick the right boxes.

Valuable lesson learnt from a pandemic

T

he Coronavirus pandemic has taken its toll in every aspect of our lives, especially in the third world countries where basic amenities for public are still far from reality. The advanced nations are in a dilemma as the second wave of resurgence of the pandemic and lockdown has affected the economy. During such a situation, those of us living in this part of the world where our state resources is non-existent need to review as to how we can emerge as a producing state. God has given us fertile soil and forests which can be utilised for agricultural produces and by-products. The state government is trying its best to encourage the tilling of soil as practised by our ancestors who were self sufficient as they were hard working. Nowadays, people have become too dependent on freebies from the government sector, which in itself is dependent on central fund as the state is nonproductive. Agriculture may sound like the only option for people to take up but have we given a thought to the requirements of this very trade? Agriculture is not only about having the basic tools to till the soil or the acres of landholdings. It is about the hard labour that people are willing to invest in, literally sweating from brow to the sole of their feet for the fruits to bear result. Other aspects of the trade entail proper road linkages, storage fa-

cilities and enough trucks to transport the agricultural produces. Is our state in a position to export surplus outside when there is not enough even for domestic consumption? This pandemic has provided the best opportunity for every individual to wake up from slumber and asses how best to be self sufficient. At the same time, we must not forget those who have lost loved ones to COVID and those recovering from this terrible virus that depletes completely. They need to be looked upon with compassion and inclusiveness rather than being discriminated upon. This virus will not leave us and can be controlled only if the vaccine is successfully launched. Until then, for those under home isolation or undergoing treatment need moral support and prayers. Let us rebuild not only the state economy but also the morale of those affected by the virus that attacks without any bias. As for the rest of the general public, let us remember to follow the SOPs at all times and help in combating the pandemic. The year 2020 has not been easy on anyone, whether rich or poor and everyone is responsible for ensuring that we recover from this setback and emerge victorious and more sustainable. A valuable lesson has been learnt through these difficult times. Sotsula Sangtam, Chümoukedima, Dimapur

Sir,

Get back to reality

The world’s attention was focused on the US presidential election lately, including us from Nagaland and everywhere. People had been passing their varied views but now that Biden is the undisputed president elect and Kamala Harris as vice president elect of the USA, I think we should get back to our own problems in Nagaland state. Let us focus with as much sincerity as we did to the US elections for bringing various developments in the state. There are many unresolved issues which the state government needs to take immediate action like health care, roads, education and commerce. Get back to reality. Katoni Zhimo, Kohima

Shipping ministry to be renamed: PM Modi

AHMEDABAD, NOV 8 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the Ministry of Shipping is being expanded and renamed as the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a Ro-Pax ferry service between Hazira in Surat and Ghogha in Bhavnagar district of Gujarat, which will reduce the 370-km road distance between the two places to 90-km by sea route. The service will also cut the travel time between the two places to about four hours from 10 to 12 hours. Modi said work is being done so that the country’s sea area emerges as an important part of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (selfreliant India). “To boost the government’s effort, one more big step is being taken. Now, the Ministry of Shipping is being renamed as the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways,” he said. “It (the ministry) is being expanded. In developed economies, in most places, the shipping ministry also takes care of ports and waterways. In India, the shipping ministry does a lot of work related to ports and waterways. Clarity in name will also bring about clarity in work,” he further said.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2020

He also said the new Ro-Pax ferry service launched on Sunday will reduce the distance between Bhavnagar to Surat, which is around 375-km by road, to 90-km by sea route. This will also reduce the travel time from 10-12 hours to three to four hours, he said. “The service will help people save both time and cost and also reduce traffic congestion on roads and reduce pollution,” Modi said. The three-deck Ro-Pax Ferry Vessel Voyage Symphony connecting Hazira in Surat district in south Gujarat and Ghogha in Saurashtras Bhavnagar has a load capacity of 30 trucks, 100 passenger cars, and 500 passengers plus 34 crew and hospitality staff, as per a statement earlier released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The ferry will make three trips daily, annually transporting five lakh passengers, 80,000 passenger vehicles, 50,000 two-wheelers and 30,000 trucks, as per the release. Modi said to strengthen the ‘blue economy’, it is important to strengthen logistics related to the sea. Compared to other countries, the cost of carrying goods from one part to another is high in India even today. Through water

Narendra Modi transport, this (cost) can be reduced drastically, he said. “Therefore, our focus is to create such an ecosystem where seamless movement of cargo is ensured. Today, for better maritime logistics along with better infrastructure, we are working on a single-window system,” he said. “To reduce the cost of logistics, the country is moving ahead with a holistic and long-term view of multimodal connectivity. The effort is to improve connectivity between road, rail, air and shipping infrastructure by removing silos between them,” the PM said. He said multi-modal parks are being constructed not just in India, but also neighbouring countries. “With all these efforts, we shall be able to reduce the cost of logistics. These efforts will also give a new direction to the economy,” he said.

Modi said the country always had resources and expertise in waterways, but the past governments lacked the vision to use them, despite the fact that transportation through waterways is much cheaper compared to road and rail, and causes minimum adverse affect on the environment. “Despite this, it was only after 2014 that work was done with a holistic approach in this direction. These rivers and seas existed even before Modi became the prime minister. What was lacking was the vision that the country has experienced after 2014,” he said. Modi said to boost the ‘blue economy’ and fishing business, his government also focused on fishermen and has come up with the ‘Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana’ with an outlay of Rs 30,000 crore to help improve the fishing infrastructure. “Today, the port capacity of coastal areas across the country is being increased and new ports are being constructed. Efforts are being made to ensure that the 21,000 -km ‘jal marg’ (waterways) are used for the country’s development,” he said. For this, work is underway on more than 500 projects under ‘Sagarmala’. worth lakhs of crores are ready, he said. Modi said Gujarat accounted for over 40 per cent share of the country’s entire trade through sea route last year. Work is on at fast pace to create infrastructure and capacity building for sea routes, like maritime clusters and maritime university, as well as the world’s first CNG Terminal in Bhavnagar, he said. TheGujarat Maritime Cluster coming up in the GIFT (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City) City at Gandhinagar will be a dedicated system to address logistics of ports and seaways, he said. “This will help in value addition of this sector,” the prime minister said. India’s first chemical and LNG Terminal was constructed at Dahej in Gujarat, he said, adding that a ‘RoRo (roll on roll off) terminal, a liquid cargo terminal and a container terminal are being set up in Bhavnagar. “The new terminals will increase Bhavnagar’s port capacity by many times,” he said. The prime minister further said the government is trying to restart the ferry service between Ghogha and Dahej that was launched in 2017, but stopped due to natural reasons.

Representational image. SRINAGAR, NOV 8 (PTI): Four security force personnel, including an Army officer, and three militants were killed during a failed infiltration bid by the ultras along the Line of Control (LoC) in Machil sector of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Sunday. The militants made an abortive bid to infiltrate into this side of the LoC in Machil sector in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district during the night, the officials said. They said the infiltrators were challenged and three of them were killed. However, the officials said, three Army soldiers, including an officer, and a

BSF jawan were killed during the operation. They said two AK rifles with two magazines and 60 rounds, a pistol with two magazines and 29 rounds, a radio set and Rs 50,000 were seized from the site. Srinagar-based defence spokesman Rajesh Kalia said at about 0100 hours on Saturday, a BSF patrol noticed suspicious movement near the Anti-Infiltration Obstacle System (LoC fence), about 3.5 km from the LoC. He said the BSF personnel challenged the infiltrators and a firefight ensued in which one militant was killed. “A BSF soldier was killed in action (KIA) and

the firefight stopped at 0400 hours,” he said. Kalia said more troops were rushed to the area and the movement of militants was tracked by surveillance devices. “Contact was re-established at 1020 hours when heavy fire was drawn by own search parties approximately 1.5 km from the LoC. In the ensuing firefight two more terrorists were killed. Own troops suffered three KIA and two injured,” he said. The defence spokesman said the injured soldiers have been evacuated. The operation is in progress and further details are awaited, the spokesman added.

DUNGARPUR (RAJASTHAN), NOV 8 (PTI): The national capital has hit the peak of the third wave of COVID-19, and the number of cases suggests that it has been the worst since the pandemic arrived in the city, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said on Sunday. He said the government had no plans yet to rope in hotels and banquet halls to augment the bed capacity for COVID-19 patients as the AAP dispensation had increased the number of beds in hospitals of Delhi. The national capital has been witnessing a fresh surge in coronavirus cases amid the festive season and rising air pollution. On Friday, Delhi recorded over 7,000 COVID19 cases for the first time. The city on Saturday reported 79 deaths, the highest number of fatalities in over four months. Jain, who is on an official visit to Rajasthan’s Dungarpur, said the first wave had hit its peak around June 23 and the second on September 17. “The third wave of COVID-19 is at its peak in Delhi. The number of cases suggests it is the worst wave so far. But the cases will come down soon,” Jain told reporters here. Delhi reported its first case on March 1, when a businessman in East Delhi was diagnosed with COVID-19 after returning from Italy.

NEW DELHI, NOV 8 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday slammed the government over demonetisation, alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s move four years ago was aimed at helping a few of his “crony capitalist friends” and had “destroyed” the Indian economy. M U M B A I , NO V 8 (IANS): Amid the clamour for reopening of temples in Maharashtra during the Unlockdown phases, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday indicated that places of worship closed since mid-March - would be opened up after Diwali. “People have been asking questions when will temples reopen? Yes, places of worship shall be opened, but let Diwali get over. We shall prepare comprehensive SOPs for the purpose,” Thackeray said in an address to the state this afternoon. Admitting to a delay, he said it was on account of “precautions at each and steps” to ensure the state doesn’t return to the earlier

(Covid-19) situation. Thackeray said some people are blaming him for the delays and he was ready to take the blame for it, since it is a matter of people’s health and lives. Since the past couple of months, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party has targeted the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi over keeping temples closed while permitting all other activities to restart. With regular protests going on by the BJP, other groups and organisations, the issue became a huge controversy with a sharp exchange of words between Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and Thackeray, leading to Union Home Minister Amit Shah chiding the Governor.

TIRUVARUR (TN), NOV 8 (PTI): The ancestral villages of US Vice-President elect Kamala Harris in Tamil Nadu on Sunday erupted in joy over the Democrat Senator’s elevation and ushered in an early Deepavali with firecrackers and sweets to celebrate her win. The joy of locals in Thulasenthirapuram and Painganadu villages in this Cauvery delta district knew no bounds as they rejoiced the victory of “the woman of our house”. The villages, which are native to her maternal grandparents, were keenly waiting the outcome and once President elect Joe Biden triumphed against incumbent Republican President Donald Trump, it was evident his running mate Harris would be his deputy. The villagers had earlier held special prayers for Harris’ win and once they were answered, celebrated it with much fanfare on Sunday. The locals celebrated 56 year-old Harris’ win by bursting crackers and distributing sweets, even as special prayers were held at

Hundreds of digital banners have been put up in the area. Politicians cutting across party lines distributed sweets to the people. A local at Painganadu who drew a large ‘kolam’ (Rangoli) was all smiles when she hailed the victory of the “woman of our house.” The colourful ‘kolam’ hailed Harris as the ‘pride’ of the village. Arulmozhi, a councillor representing the area in the Mannargudi panchayat union, wished Harris visited the village after assuming office. “Even for winning an election at the local level, women have to struggle a lot. We can understand how difficult it would have been for Kamala Harris to win that fiercely fought election. We hope Kamala will one day pay a visit to our vil-

lage after assuming office and we are eagerly waiting to shake hands (with her),” she said. The villagers had already kept the crackers ready in anticipation of Harris’ win, even as the people were proud that their villages happen to be the native place of the grandparents of Kamala Harris. Thulasenthirapuram and Painganadu are agrarian villages and are located very close to each other near Mannargudi in the district. Harris’ grandfather P V Gopalan moved out of Thulasenthirapuram village as a young man and took up a job in the British government service. Her grandmother Rajam belonged to the nearby Painganadu village. Though Kamala’s ancestors left the village many decades ago, family members had kept their connections with the temple at Thulasenthirapuram intact.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2020

Trump’s defiance threatens smooth transition LONDON, NOV 8 (AGENCIES): A defiant Donald Trump was pictured leaving the White House as he headed back to his golf course in Virginia, still insisting he had won the US presidential election. The president has so far refused to concede the race to president-elect Joe Biden, who, four nail-biting days after the election, finally amassed enough electoral college votes needed to win the White House. Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney claimed Mr Trump, despite having a “relaxed relationship with the truth”, will eventually “accept the inevitable” that Biden is the president-elect. Donald Trump falsely declared victory on the night of the election and vowed to go to the Supreme Court to stop vote counting - confirming some Americans’ worst fears that he would undermine the democratic process. This isn’t the first time the question has become one of national importance: Each time the president has suggested he will only accept the results of an election if they were in his favour, media outlets have explored the constitutional limits he would face in disputing his dismissal from the Oval Office. President-elect Joe Biden has prepared his own army of attorneys and constitutional law experts to counter the president’s legal challenges on everything from expanded mail-in vot-

ing during the coronavirus pandemic to alleged instances of voter fraud, which Mr Trump has claimed without evidence. Biden has insisted federal officials “will escort [Trump] from the White House with great dispatch” if he loses the election. The Democrat took the lead over Trump in the battleground states of Pennsylvania and Nevada for the first time on Saturday, winning the White House. Three days after polls closed, Biden has a 290 to 214 lead in the state-by-state Electoral College vote that determines the winner, according to most major television networks. What’s perhaps most concerning about the president’s apparent threats not to concede in the election is how the country lacks precedent for dealing with such a scenario. The peaceful transition of power is a bedrock of American soci-

ety, and in past examples of contentious elections, resolutions had been made long before any refusal to concede. On previous occasions in the history of the United States, when the presidency was in any way contested, cooler heads have prevailed in the interest of the peaceful transfer of power. Richard Nixon conceded to John F Kennedy in 1960 amid several accusations of vote rigging for the Democrat, for instance. Vice president Al Gore accepted the Supreme Court’s ruling that George Bush had won the 2000 presidential election even though there were significant questions about the integrity of the results in Florida. Paul Quirk, a professor of political science at the University of British Columbia, previously told The Independent it would put law enforcement in an awkward position.

“At some point, the question would become: whose orders do law enforcement obey? Because it would ultimately become a matter of the use of force in one direction or another.” The US constitution makes no mention of how a president should be removed if they lose an election and refuse to hand over power to their opponent. So, it is hard to say if anyone would have the appetite to send the FBI, or navy seals, or whatever law enforcement agency, storming into the West Wing to arrest a recently defeated Donald Trump. Tr ump suppor ters refuse to accept defeat: Chanting “This isn’t over! and “Stop the steal,” supporters of President Donald Trump protested at state capitols across the country Saturday, refusing to accept defeat and echoing Trump’s unsubstantiated allegations

that the Democrats won by fraud. From Atlanta and Tallahassee to Austin, Bismarck, Boise and Phoenix, crowds ranging in size from a few dozen to a few thousand — some of them openly carrying guns — decried the news of Joe Biden’s victory after more than three suspense-filled days of votecounting put the Democrat over the top. Skirmishes broke out in some cities. In Atlanta, outside the state Capitol in the longtime Republican stronghold of Georgia, chants of “Lock him up!” rang out among an estimated 1,000 Trump supporters. Others chanted, “This isn’t over! This isn’t over!” and “Fake news!” The streets were awash with American flags and Trump banners. No immediate violence was reported, though at one point, police moved to separate Trump opponents from supporters. Biden held a slim lead in Georgia, which hasn’t gone for a Democrat since 1992. Underscoring the hard feelings on both sides of the nation’s deep political divide, anti-Trump protesters in Washington booed, yelled obscenities, shouted “Loser! Loser!” and gave the finger to Trump’s motorcade as the president returned to the White House from a golf outing Saturday. Two signs posted in front of Trump’s Washington hotel read “Don’t be a sore loser” and “Face Reality.”

World leaders underline ‘shared’ priorities and values as they wish Biden and Harris WASHINGTON, NOV 8 (PTI): Underlining the “shared” values and priorities -- from climate change to trade and security -- leaders across the globe cheered the victory of US Presidentelect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris as they look forward to work together with America to combat the world’s greatest challenges. In his congratulatory message, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau underlined his country’s close ties with the US. “Canada and the United States enjoy an extraordinary relationship – one that is unique on the world stage. Our shared geography, common interests, deep personal connections, and strong economic ties make us close friends, partners, and allies,” he said in a statement. “We will further build on this foundation as we continue to keep our people safe and healthy from the impacts of the global COVID-19 pandemic, and work to advance peace and inclusion, economic prosperity, and climate action around the world,” Trudeau said. UK PM Boris Johnson congratulated Biden and wished Harris on her “historic achievement” as he emphasised on the US being the most important ally of the UK. “The US is our most important ally and I look forward to working closely together on our

shared priorities, from climate change to trade and security,” he tweeted. Australian PM Scott Morrison said he looks forward to building a great partnership with Biden. “This is a profound time, not just for the United States, but our partnership and the world broadly,” he told reporters in Canberra. South Korean President Moon Jae-in said his country’s alliance with the US is strong and the bond between the two nations is “rock-solid”. “I very much look forward to working with you for our shared values,” Moon tweeted, congratulating Biden and Harris. French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted, “We have a lot to do to over-

come today’s challenges. Let’s work together!” Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga said he looks forward to working with the Biden-Harris administration “to further strengthen the Japan-US alliance and ensure peace, freedom and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond”. Ireland PM Micheal Martin said Biden has been a “true friend” of the nation throughout his life. Wishing Biden, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted, “Joe, we’ve had a long & warm personal relationship for nearly 40 years, and I know you as a great friend of Israel. I look forward to working with both of you to further strengthen the special alliance between the U.S. and Israel.”

NEW DELHI/ISLAMABAD, NOV 8 (IANS): In an unprecedented move, the UN Watch took a scathing dig at Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan for his intolerant views and Islamabad’s inclusion in the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC). Pakistan was recently re-elected to the UNHRC even as the country’s human rights record is one among the worst in the world. On October 16, a French teacher was beheaded by an Islamist in Paris for exhibiting Charlie Hebdo cartoons in a class on the

idea of freedom of expression. While President Emmanuel Macron has made it clear that Islamic radicalism and terrorism will not be tolerated in France, Prime Minister Khan justified the brutal act of beheading by arguing that the teacher had committed “blasphemy” by showing the cartoons of the Prophet. The official Twitter handle of the government of Pakistan had quoted Khan as saying that “blasphemy in garb of freedom of expression is intolerable”. The Geneva-based rights group, which is the

only UN-accredited watchdog of the global body, on Twitter rebutted Prime Minister Khan, saying: “Your presence on the UN Human Rights Council is intolerable.” In its response, the Pakistan government accused the UN Watch of being a pro-Israel Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with evident bias against Muslims. Arslan Khalid, the digital media adviser to Prime Minister Khan on Twitter alleged that the NGO had nothing to do with the UN. The NGO countered the Khan government saying that Pakistan pretended to be a defender of Muslims and yet takes an apathetic stand on the human rights abuse of over one million Uighur Muslims in China’s Xinjiang province. The UN Watch pointed out that Pakistan government instead supports and praises the Chinese government which is perpetrating genocide against the Uighurs.

Delhi Capitals in maiden IPL final EPL: Chelsea beat Sheffield 4-0

Abu Dhabi, Nov 8 (PTI): Shikhar Dhawan’s fiery half-century and Marcus Stoinis’ all-round show carried Delhi Capitals into their maiden IPL final as they survived some anxious moments before prevailing by 17 runs in the second Qualifier here on Sunday. Breathtaking counterattacking knocks by Kane Williamson (67) and Abdul Samad (33) threatened to dash Delhi Capitals hopes but Stoinis’ timely dismissal of the Kiwi batsman tilted it in his side’s favour. The Capitals will now challenge Mumbai Indians for the title on Tuesday, having lost to them in the first Qualifier. In-form Shikhar Dhawan smashed 78 off 49 balls to help the Capitals post a challenging 189 for three after electing to bat. S t o i n i s, w h o wa s promoted to open the innings, added 86 runs with Dhawan and later took three wickets for 26 runs in SRH’s run chase. Every move of Capitals worked on Sunday as Shimron Hetmyer, who was brought in, also contributed in team’s win with his unbeaten 42-run knock. Rabada got rid of dangerous David Warner (2) with his first ball to give the Capitals the start they wanted. Manish Pandey (21) and Priyam garg (17) stroked the ball beautifully and with confidence in their small 31-run stand but Stoinis dismissed both of them in the space of three balls. The three wickets inside five overs pegged SRH back.

DC spin duo of Axar Patel and Pravin Dubey also bowled well as they kept control over the proceedings. Williamson and Jason Holder kept the scoreboard ticking with ones, twos and the odd boundaries. The Kiwi batsman began hitting with remarkable ease and his strong game against the spinners kept SRH in the hunt. Holder though got out while attempting a big shot off Patel. Williamson completed his fifty with a single off Patel. He got good support from Abdul Samad, who smashed Nortje for two fours and a six. SRH needed 61 from last five overs and required Williamson to do the job. He was sent by back Stoinis, getting him out off a widish ball that he hit straight to Rabada at deep cover. Rabada (4/29) then ran through the SRH lower

order to seal the match for the Capitals. E a r l i e r, s k i p p e r Shreyas Iyer (21) could not do much. Dhawan, in his well-paced innings, hit six fours and two sixes. He added 52 runs for the third wicket with Hetmyer before being dismissed by seamer Sandeep Sharma (1/30). SRH’s sloppy fielding also helped Capitals as they dropped Stoinis early in the innings and gave them a few free runs. SRH also dropped Dhawan towards the end, though it did not cost them much. Yet again, Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan (4-0-26-1) was the most effective bowler though T Natarajan bowled well in slog overs. Stoinis, after being dropped by Jason Holder off Sandeep at short midon, punished the SRH bowlers with a flurry of boundaries.

Stoinis, on three at that time, was nicely set up by Sandeep but the opportunity was not taken. It was Holder, who was then taken to task by Stoinis, who creamed off 18 runs from the West Indian’s over with three fours and a six. Sandeep was initially impeccable with his length balls but drifted afterwards and was punished by Dhawan. In-came spinner Shabaz Nadeem to bowl the last Powerplay over and ended up leaking 14 runs as DC reached 65 for no loss. Warner shuffled his bowlers around, handing the ball to Rashid and Natarajan. The Afghan spinner got them the breakthrough with his eighth ball by castling Stoinis. Dhawan raised his fifty with a six off Nadeem. Iyer struggled to time the ball and was soon dismissed by Holder.
