DIMAPUR, NOV 20 (NPN): Unidentified armed miscreants opened fire at a twowheeler showroom – Riven Honda – at River Belt Colony, near Notun Bosti junction, here on Tuesday evening. According to eyewitnesses, three men came on a motorcycle and fired several rounds at around 5 p.m. They fled the scene immediately after the firing. The police, who arrived at the scene, recovered five

empty shells of 9 mm pistol from the incident site and have started investigation. Five employees were inside the showroom when the incident occurred. Fortunately, none of them were injured. Meanwhile, the showroom’s owner denied having received any demand note.

Dimapur was going from bad to worst and appealed to the security agencies to be more vigilant so such criminals were caught and punished as per the law. PDP, Cong and NC in talks to Won’t contest next LS polls: Sushma form J&K govt to checkmate BJP INDORE, NOV 20 (PTI):

SRINAGAR, NOV 20 ( AG E N C I O E S ) : P D P, Congress and the National Conference are in talks to form a popular government in Jammu and Kashmir to frustrate the BJP’s efforts to poach legislators from Mehbooba Mufti’s PDP party and prop up a government headed by Sajjad Lone’s People Conference, sources have said. The coalition talks hold the potential to trigger farreaching realignment of political forces in Jammu and Kashmir and envisages an alliance between PDP and Congress, which have been partners in a government between 2002 and 2007, backed from outside by the National Conference, PTI reported. PDP has 28 MLAs, followed by NC with 15 and Congress with 12 which will take them well clear of the majority mark of 44. The National Conference, sources said, have made it clear that they were not interested in joining a coalition government but would not be averse to giving outside support to a PDP-Congress coalition. If such an arrangement

comes about, Mehbooba Mufti is unlikely to be the chief minister but the government may be headed by a senior PDP leader. The state is currently under governor’s rule which cannot be extended after it completes its six-month period on December 19. It is proposed to impose President’s rule thereafter but the 87-member assembly is not being dissolved, according to Governor Satyapal Mallik. A popular government headed by the PDP’s Mehbooba Mufti fell when its partner BJP pulled out of the ruling coalition on June 16. Political circles have been agog with speculation that behind the scene efforts were underway to prop up a government headed by Sajjad Lone’s People Conference, which has only two MLAs but which would be banking on support by the 25 MLAs of BJP. However, this combination would fall short of the required majority of 44 which is sought to be made by splitting the PDP which has been rocked by dissidence.

Senior BJP leader and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj announced Tuesday that she will not contest the next Lok Sabha polls due to health reasons. The 66-year-old leader, who is serving her fourth term in the House, told reporters “It is the party which decides, but I have made up my mind not to contest the next (Lok Sabha) elections due to health reasons.” A spell-binding orator in Hindi, Swaraj is among the few top politicians capable of speaking in English with equal ease and has had a few rare distinctions including being the youngest cabinet minister at 25 when she joined the Haryana government in 1977 and the first woman chief minister of Delhi. She is also the first woman external affairs minister of the country. Indira Gandhi, though, as prime minister had held the portfolio. Swaraj has also served in Rajya Sabha for three terms and was a member of Haryana assembly. She started her political life with ABVP, the RSS’ student wing, and later joined the BJP.

Pastors pained at NLA expected to go paperless NNPGs collecting taxes DIMAPUR, NOV 20 (NPN): Dimapur Area Ao Baptist Pastors Fellowship (DAAPBF) has expressed aghast and pain at Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) allegedly collecting taxes even from church construction activities. Citing an instance, DAAPBF stated that Aoyim Baptist Church started its new church building construction with a dedicatory service on October 9, 2017. It alleged that soon after construction started, different NNPGs started levying taxes on non-local skilled workers, which ultimately added up to the total cost of the construction. According to the fellowship, the church members had painstakingly collected offerings and tithes for several years to construct the new church building. On the lookout, non-local workers were hired for construction works due to non-availability of local workers, on whom taxes were now being imposed, it added. Having learnt of the matter, DAAPBF said it called an emergency meeting and discussed the serious issue at length and declared that it was convinced that such taxes even from construction of the house of God was against Christian testimony and biblical teaching. Therefore, such practices were detestable and should be refrained, it added.

Secularism taking a different direction: NBA prez 3 nabbed on kidnapping charges Staff Reporter

D I M A P U R , N OV 2 0 (NPN): Expressing concern over alleged curtailment of religious freedom of minority communities, Nagaland Bar Association (NBA) president Talitsungba pointed out that secularism had taken a different direction today. He also accused the state of being a “mere spectator” and alleged that it had “escaped scot free” despite its indifference. Recalling the days when Christians in other parts of the country could propagate their faith openly, Talitsungba however lamented that in recent times people were reportedly being arrested on false charges of coercion, if they dared to preach openly. Speaking as a special guest at the introductory session of the eighth biennial general conference of

Talitsungba (NP)

Nagaland Law Students’ Federation (NLSF) here on Tuesday, Talitsungba touched upon various crucial social and economic issues the country was faced with today. The two-day conference is being held at Hotel Acacia. Stressing on curtailment of religious freedom in recent times, Talitsungba remarked, “In the context of Nagaland, we get to see so many enlightened views on various issues in newspapers, but nobody seems to be bothered about

the curtailment of religious rights.” On incidents of mob lynching due to consumption of beef in the last few years, Talitsungba said when a society considered cows more important than human lives, there were no adequate means to rein in the perpetrators. He also questioned how killing a person without trial could constitute justice. On demonetisation, he said silence on the part of head of economic institutions of the country was baffling. He demanded that legislations must be made to ensure a peaceful coexistence rather than harassment of the public and proposed a law whereby the laws concerning the economy were not made binding on the public. Talitsungba also spoke on what he termed was a

“new form of capitalism” practised by the government wherein any payment above Rs 2 lakh could not be made in cash, but electronically. He revealed the satellite connection rights for the payment process were obtained by private firms and the taxes on payment went to their coffers. Referring to the correlation between fundamental rights and duties, especially in comparison with other countries, the bar association chief also advocated that justice be dispensed in a benevolent manner. City Law College principal P Leonard Aier, who also spoke on the occasion, remarked that people were today living in a failed State, pointing out that one of the main reasons was judicial machinery that was not functioning in the manner it should.

No government water supply to Sümi village: Sümi village council

DIMAPUR: Alleging continuous suppression of Sümi village under Phek district, the Sümi village council (SVC) Tuesday said that the village has been surviving without government water supply since June 6, 2018. In a press release, SVC chairman Neitelo Rhakho has appealed to the responsible government authorities and Secheku area leaders to understand the difficulties of Sümi village and help restore water supply to the village. SVC claimed that in 1970, without the consent of the landowner (Sümi village), the land, which was the village site, was forcibly acquired in order to establish circle officer headquarters. When the leaders of the village complained, SVC said they were arrested, put into jail and tortured, adding some of them died due to inner injuries. The village council stated that government promised that the land compensation would be given and the name of the town would be called Sümi town. However,

SVC said nothing was done and Sümi village was only cheated. “They also verbally agreed that Welheri stream source will be supplied to Town and Sümi village in order to establish circle officer headquarters,” SVC stated. It, however, asserted that there was no written agreement. “There is also no written agreement of land acquisition between landowner (Sümi village) and the Government till today. The land was forcibly occupied suppressing the right of Sümi village,” SVC maintained. Stating that water supply through 1 inch diameter pipe from Welheri water was supplied to Sümi village since 1974, SVC, however, said that in 1998 pipe size was reduced to ½ inch diameter, which was not sufficient for the village to survive. Sümi village council said Sümi village communitised water supply to the village in 2006 under the government flagship programme. However, SVC said Welheri water source owners lodged complaint that their water source should

not be communitised. SVC said it then requested the PHE department to withdraw communitization of water supply to Sümi village, adding that Welheri water source owners and Chizami town ad hoc committee decided to stop water supply to Sümi Village till communitization was withdrawn. SVC said SDO (Civil) issued order to stop water supply to Sümi Village on June 11, 2018, but water supply to Sümi Village was stopped on June 6, 2018. Following its request, SVC said the PHE department issued withdrawal of WATSAN committee in respect of Sümi village vide Order Dated Kohima August 29, 2018. SVC said the withdrawal letter was circulated to all the concerned head of departments and persons. As per the order, SVC said Sümi village had dissolved WATSAN committee and submitted passbook and cheque book to executive engineer, PHE, Phek on November 7, 2018. However, SVC said water supply was not given to Sümi village till today.

Rahul Gandhi hits out at Modi in Mizoram

Aizawl/Champhai, Nov 20 (PTI): Congress president Rahul Gandhi Tuesday charged the Modiled government with interfering in the functioning of institutions like the Election Commission and CBI, as he also accused the Prime Minister of giving Rs 30,000 crore, which is “one year’s spending on MGNREGA scheme”, to help Reliance’s Anil Ambani. Hitting hard at the BJP’s ideological mentor, he said being an RSS man is sufficient qualification to be governor or vice chancellor. Gandhi addressed a series of rallies in Mizoram where Congress is making all efforts to hold its lone fort in the North-East. The party is in power in the state since 2008. Elections to 40-member Mizoram assembly is slated for November 28. Reiterating his allegations of corruption in the Rafale fighter places purchase, he said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has “robbed” public money and used it to buy publicity. The government has denied the opposition party’s allegations on the fighter jet deal with France. “The Modi government is interfering in the functioning of the Planning

Commission, RBI, CBI and Election Commission. Four judges of the Supreme Court said they could not do their jobs due to government interference,” Gandhi claimed. In January, four seniormost judges of the Supreme Court -- Justices J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, M B Lokur and Kurian Joseph -- called a press conference to say the situation in the top court was “not in order”. Gogoi is now the chief justice. “To be governor or VC of a university, being an RSS man is sufficient qualification,” Gandhi said. “Narendra Modi personally gave Rs 30,000 crore to Anil Ambani. That is the amount for one year’s spending on MGNREGA in the entire country,” Gandhi said addressing an election rally at Champhai earlier in the day. Alleging that Modi himself finalised the deal at Rs 1,600 crore per aircraft against UPA’s Rs 526 crore with conditions “to give the contract to Anil Ambani instead of PSU firm HAL”, Gandhi said the negotiation facts between India and France were divulged by the former French President. “That is where Narendra Modi got all the money for his marketing.

Remember, when you see Modi on TV next time, it is the money of you and Indian Air Force,” he said at Champhai. Gandhi slammed the state’s principal opposition party Mizo National Front (MNF) for allegedly working with the BJP in the Mizoram elections. “RSS and BJP understand that this is the only opportunity for them to enter Mizoram and destroy its culture. They know that they are unlikely to win the

A i z aw l , N o v 2 0 (IANS): BJP President Amit shah on Tuesday said that the Centre has been working for all-round development and welfare of India’s northeast, and Union Ministers had been visiting the region to catalyse progress in the states. “The BJP-led NDA (National Democratic Alliance) government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been working for the all-round development and welfare of the people of northeastern states,” Shah said at election rallies in Mizoram. “Under the instruction of the Prime Minister, Union Ministers have visited the eight northeastern states more than 200 times since 2014 to boost the progress of the region.” He said that the Bharatiya Janata Party

(BJP) worked for the welfare and development of the minority, ethnic, and religious groups and promised jobs to 50,000 educated minority youths. Claiming that his party would win the November 28 assembly polls in Mizoram, Shah said that the BJP would implement target-oriented plans in the field of education, health, connectivity and transportation after coming to power. Shah addressed three election rallies at Lawngtlai, Champhai and Vairengte to woo voters in support of 39 BJP candidates. Mizoram goes to polls on November 28 polls to elect a 40-member assembly. Shah accused the Congress-led state government of misusing the central funds and said that

UNLF rubbishes police claims Correspondent

IMPHAL, Nov 20: United National Liberation Front (UNLF) has Tuesday rubbished police claims of arresting a suspect of the bomb attack at Manipur Legislative Assembly complex. The rebel group through a statement alleged the state police of making up stories of individuals having connection with the outfit after the recent by the police. The statement said that the arrest and blaming of security staff of Manipur Legislative Assembly to the attack was nothing but a sign of confusion of the state security force. Reacting to the claim by Imphal West SP that police have been arrested some suspects; the outfit said the claim was ‘baseless and unfounded story.’ It stated that the arrested person Yumnam Deven, an ASI of the security staffs

of Manipur Legislative Assembly has nothing to do with the outfit. “Why the police accused him of having relation with the outfit was because he happened to be the elder brother of Sinnaba, a 2nd Lt of the MPA/ UNLF who was murdered by the Manipur police in January 1992,” stated the outfit. Laishram Sangita, who was arrested by the police was also in no way related to the outfit, the statement added. The statement stated that the arms and ammunitions that the police had claimed to have been recovered from a newly constructed building at Lamphelpat on Novemebr 14 do not belong to the UNLF. The UNLF, in the statement, termed the act of the state police as “excessive” meted out to the civilians when they could not find any clue to the series of attack performed by the cadres of the outfit.

‘Dimsum Affairs’ to cozy up to on winter evenings in Guwahati

Guwahati, Nov 20 (IANS): The dip in the mercury level during the day and foggy evenings have set the tone for a perfect get together of friends and old buddies. And what else does one need if the menu is topped with some hot and steaming dimsums, which will not only help one open up one’s heart but also tantalise the taste buds? The Legacy restaurant of the Hotel Palacio in Guwahati is offering “Dimsum Affairs”, with a variety of unique yet authentic dimsums for their guests this winter. While the premium business-class hotel has retained the authentic taste of the dimsums, there is also a new twist as they are baked in the tandoor and served with innovative dips, with black beans, red bellpepper and peanut butter, among many more, as the base. “Dimsums, once considered a snack for rural farmers taking respite in tea houses, is now a staple in Cantonese cuisine. Today, dimsums, which translates into ‘touch the heart’, are known around the world. From five-star restaurants to family-owned street stalls, these dainty parcels of dough with delectable fillings are in demand everywhere,” the hotel’s Executive Chef, Atanu Ghosh, told IANS here. He said that with a wide range of dimsums on offer in the menu, there could not be a better way to spend a winter evening. Ghosh, and Sous Chef Ranabir Dey, have created an interesting choice of dimsums, momos and siu mai. “Diners can select from a la carte offerings that include both vegetarian and non vegetarian verieties -pak choy and mushroom momo, basil chicken momo, galangal prawn momos and the like. One can also chose from the range of sizzling momos served with noodles or rice. Basa and waterchestnut dumplings, prawn hargow, chicken kothe and chicken siu mai are a must-try,” Ghosh explained.

sure, Imphal East district police Tuesday conducted mopping operation in the localities around the main venue where Union defense minister is scheduled to attend the opening ceremony of the festival. The operations were conducted at Wangkhei, Mahabali Kabui Khul, Harikhagok and Palace Compound Tuesday morning. During the operation at Wangkhei, 153 men and 62 women were verified out of which four persons without ID proofs were picked up and handed over to Porompat police station for further verification.

One trampled to death by jumbo Guwahati, Nov 20 (Agencies): In yet another incident of man-elephant conflict in Udalguri, one man was trampled to death on Monday night. A day after two people lost their life in elephant attack, another person was trampled to death by wild jumbos in Bhutiachang tea estate in Udalguri district around 10.30 pm last night. According to North East Now, the victim has been identified as Benjamin Minj (34). According to locals, the victim was patrolling the area with villagers to chase away the herds of jumbos when he was trampled to death. The irked locals have blamed the forest department for failing to chase away the herds of jumbos which frequent the villages specifically in the post-harvesting season. It is to be mentioned that a total of 18 humans and 4 elephants have died due to the manelephant conflict.

At Mahabali Kabui Khul, the police conducted house to house raids in which about 40 houses were searched and the residents including rented ones were verified. However, no one was picked up. Ahead of the grand opening of the biggest tourism festival of the state, chief minister N Biren Singh Tuesday inspected the preparations going on at Manipur Trade and Expo Centre at Lamboikhongnangkhong in Imphal West district and Hatta Kangjeibung in Imphal East district. Talking to reporters, the chief minister reiterated

his appeal urging the people to uphold Manipuri tradition by extending hospitality and to receive the guests with utmost decency. He further urged the public to extend cooperation to the government in keeping the roads, public places and surroundings neat and clean. He also urged all concerned not to call any type of bandh or blockade during the festival. He said that this year’s Manipur Sangai Festival was going to create history because it is being planned to organize in three venues of both hill and valley districts - Imphal, Mao (Senapati) and Keibul Lamjao National Park (Bishnupur) for the first time. Moreover, many foreign dignitaries are also attending the festival, he said while adding that delegates from Myanmar have already started arriving in the capital. Mention may be made that Thailand Princess and eldest daughter of the Ryal Thai Family Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, US Ambassador to India Kenneth Juster and chief ministers of Sagaing and Mandalay regions of Myanmar are scheduled to visit the state and host some of the evening events of the festival organized by the state government to promote the state as a global tourism destination.

Itanagar, Nov 20 (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein has directed the state’s research department to expedite work on “audio-visual documentation of cultural heritage of Mishmi tribes” of the state. Mein’s directive came on Monday during a meeting with research department Secretary Dani Salu, Director Batem Pertin and a German anthropologist who is working on tribals of the state for 15 years, an official release said. The researcher from Hydelberg, Dr Gerhard Heller, is presently working on the indigenous healing practice of the Idu Mishmi tribe who inhabit the Dibang valley region. Heller had already documented the traditional healing systems of other tribes such as Miju Mishmi, Digaro Mishmi, Monpa and Galo tribes of Arunachal

Pradesh, the release said. Mein, also holding the planning and finance portfolio, said the documentation project was announced in his budget speech and also reflected in the departmental State Annual Development Agenda (SADA) for the year 2018-19. The deputy chief minister also asked the research department to complete formalities of signing an agreement with Heller immediately and begin the work soon. Official sources said the agreement would enable the government to utilise Heller’s findings to initiate tribal tourism in the state. His expertise would also be helpful in setting up a digital museum in the state capital which would showcase the rich cultural heritage of all the tribes of the state, the sources said. Salu said the documentation project would be completed within the stipulated period of two years.

TURA, Nov 20 (Agencies): In a bid to highlight their demand at the state corridors of power, supporters of the Garoland state, under the aegis of the Garoland State Movement Committee, have decided to stage a procession in Shillong on December 5, according to The Shillong Times. “We have decided to stage a peaceful procession in Shillong on 5th December at 11 AM to once again remind the present government of our longstanding demand in a democratic way,” informed GSMC Chairman Nikman Ch Marak. He said that their demand for creation of a separate Garoland state has been a long standing genuine issue which remained unattended to by successive state and central governments. “In spite of the fact that this legitimate movement had been spearheaded by our forefathers under different aegis for generations to materialize the cherished aspirations of the people of Garo Hills belonging to different tribes, the ultimate goal to achieve Garoland statehood is yet to see the light of day,” rued the separate state leader. Members of the movement will proceed in a procession that will begin from the state central library premises passing through the Secretariat office via police bazaar-AG Office and back to the library.

Meghalaya ex-CM Lapang to join NPP Shillong, Nov 20 (Agencies): Breaking his silence, former Meghalaya Chief Minister and chief adviser to the MDA Government, DD Lapang has announced that he would join the National People’s Party (NPP) soon. The announcement came after Lapang’s supporters who met at Nongpoh on Saturday unanimously asked him to join the NPP, according to North East Now. “I respected the decision of my supporters who are all from various political parties, telling me that I should join a political party rather than remaining as a common man in the MDA Government,” Lapang said. He said that he cannot ignore his supporters’ wish and now it would be only time when he will formal join the NPP. Stating that he has been for many decades with the Congress, which is a national party, Lapang said that NPP too has spread to various states and moreover he has that closeness since the national president of the party, Conrad K. Sangma is also from Meghalaya. On his role in NPP, Lapang said that he is yet to know since the party he is still on his way to enter into the NPP house. He also thanked his supporters for being with him after he left the Con-

DD Lapang (File) gress which he alleged has sidelined him and has saw him useless since he is old. “I thank the Government for appointing me as the chief adviser without putting any condition that time since I left the Congress,” he said. Whether he would contest elections again and his role in the Government, Lapang said that he would not contest elections and that his role in the Government would be to see that there is stability. “The State has suffered from instability in the past. We need stability, and it is the first criteria to make the state a new Meghalaya,” the veteran leader who had taken oath five times as chief minister and was also ousted from the chief minister’s post. On the performance of the MDA Government, Lapang said that the Government now has new faces and some ministers are yet to gain experience and knowledge in administration.

NRC mystery in Assam

A

dding another controversy on the issue of National Register of Citizens (NRC), a whopping 36 lakh people from Assam who originally applied for the NRC (National Register of Citizens) have gone missing. When the final draft came out, there were a total of 40 lakh people whose names had been excluded from the final draft of NRC. When so many were left out, the Supreme Court ordered resumption to filing of claims and objections in September. However, only 3.5 lakh people have reapplied for their names to be included in the NRC. With three weeks left before closure of claims and objections to NRC, authorities are baffled as what happened to around 36 lakh people whose were supposed to have reapplied? The NRC as it were, arouses much controversy and so when the final draft was published on July 30, 2018 around 40 lakh were reportedly left out. Since then more than 110 days have passed and 36 lakh people have not approached any NRC Seva Kendras claiming to be an Indian with further proof. With less and less number of people coming to the NSK in the last few weeks, NRC authorities believe this figure is unlikely to change a very dramatic change in the next three week. The people in Assam have been confused by the way in which authorities have managed verification of citizenship. Perhaps there are as many as around 40 lakhs people missing. Perhaps it could well be that a quarter of that number cannot produce any valid documents that they have been in Assam for over 12 years or some whose parents were born and brought up in the state. For those who came from across the international border, their predicament is understandable. They will be declared stateless if they fail to produce any valid document(s). For those whose parents or grandparents were from Indian states, they would not be as worried. The current issue of 36 lakh people who had not submitted required documents, is somewhat like that of Nagaland which had consistently maintained the record of highest population growth for decades. Later, the revised census led to reduction by only around eighty thousand. The population had nearly touched 21 lakhs but came down to a little over 19 lakhs. In fact many observers tend to believe that the actual figure should be around 15 lakh or so. The Assam NRC is very crucial since it is a test on the citizenship registry that will also impact the other states in the north east. Left to itself, citizenship should be decided through valid documents. Of course, many illegal immigrants are able to possess documents but it is not confined to Bangladeshi Muslims but also includes Bangladeshi Hindus. The pandering of communal divide in the exercise is unjustified, unwarranted and unacceptable to all Indians. The indisputable fact is that the democratic space for the rights of Muslims has been shrinking in India ever since independence. Today, they may be murdered in broad daylight with impunity. This seems to have affected some Muslims during the preparation of the NRC. Muslims in Assam firmly committed to 1971 as cut-off year to verify citizenship to end the strife. The demand for an NRC gained traction only since then. It will be a dangerous precedent to renege on it and slowly push Assam back into bloody anarchy.

DailyDevotion The Forgiveness of God In Him we have…the forgiveness of sins… —Ephesians 1:7 Beware of the pleasant view of the fatherhood of God: God is so kind and loving that of course He will forgive us. That thought, based solely on emotion, cannot be found anywhere in the New Testament. The only basis on which God can forgive us is the tremendous tragedy of the Cross of Christ. To base our forgiveness on any other ground is unconscious blasphemy. The only ground on which God can forgive our sin and reinstate us to His favor is through the Cross of Christ. There is no other way! Forgiveness, which is so easy for us to accept, cost the agony at Calvary. We should never take the forgiveness of sin, the gift of the Holy Spirit, and our sanctification in simple faith, and then forget the enormous cost to God that made all of this ours. Forgiveness is the divine miracle of grace. The cost to God was the Cross of Christ. To forgive sin, while remaining a holy God, this price had to be paid. Never accept a view of the fatherhood of God if it blots out the atonement. The revealed truth of God is that without the atonement He cannot forgive— He would contradict His nature if He did. The only way we can be forgiven is by being brought back to God through the atonement of the Cross. God’s forgiveness is possible only in the supernatural realm. Compared with the miracle of the forgiveness of sin, the experience of sanctification is small. Sanctification is simply the wonderful expression or evidence of the forgiveness of sins in a human life. But the thing that awakens the deepest fountain of gratitude in a human being is that God has forgiven his sin. Paul never got away from this. Once you realize all that it cost God to forgive you, you will be held as in a vise, constrained by the love of God.

Post-mortem

Naga political question & the alternative view

A

peaceful resolution to the Naga political question continue to evade all the stakeholders and the Nagas as a whole in particular although regular sound of optimism keep reverberating from the negotiating parties in the form of assuring the Nagas that an honorable solution to the issue is on card and that the negotiation for settlement is at the final stage. The signing of the framework agreement between Government of India (GoI) and NSCN in August 2015, which has now completed three years, almost 20 years after the initiation of new phase of political talk and the subsequent expansion of the talk with the NNPGs, represented by five different Naga political group, resulting in the signing of a political agreement in November 2017 are landmark per se, nevertheless the two political entities (India and Nagas) are yet to develop a consensus on how to bring to final closure to this costly conflict that is now on for more than 70 plus years. A fresh imitative to engage the NSCN (K), albeit keeping the Nagas of Myanmar out from the purview, too sound optimistic at least to those desiring for the peaceful closure of the conflict that is read as the national movement for freedom which turn out to be one of the bloodiest of its kind in human history. The change in the rule of engagement, from armed confrontation to an effort for peaceful resolution, served the convenience of both the sides, but the question remains to be seen is the scope of this peaceful engagement in delivering the historical and legitimate right of the Nagas for which cause the later had paid with many precious lives. Engaging GoI or Govt. of Myanmar in the form of political/peace talk is one thing; the worst fear of the Nagas is the possibility of ignoring or abandoning the issue of Naga sovereignty in the process (Needless to say the signatories of the “framework agreement” and “agreed position” to date, on record, has yet to conceded that they had abandon the very issue at any stage of the talks). A memorandum to the Simon Commission by Naga Club in 1929 defines who the Naga people are, its political history that was not subjected to any foreign rule and is completely independent in nature, its territorial boundary and the vision for free sovereign Naga nation based on historical facts in the event of the departure of the British. This historic Naga’s legal document was affirmed by the Naga National Council, the sequel to Naga Club, through the declaration of independence and under its banner, Nagas people endorsed the declaration during the 1951 plebiscite where 99 percent Nagas voted in favor of independence. More than 70 years later, Naga people are yet to part with this commitment and the 1951 plebiscite for Naga sovereignty remains the only political basis for the Naga National Movement (hereafter NNM). If the “compulsion of our time” has to necessitate the Nagas to depart

“I

can’t think of any better representation of beauty than someone who is unafraid to be herself.” ~ Emma Stone During my journey on this planet, i have discovered that the Man-a selfproclaimed king of Earth became his own worst enemy. Which of the species on this planet is ashamed of its own natural existence? I do not see any other example except mankind. We are ashamed of ourselves. We are ashamed of our ‘body’- the temple where God is supposed to reside- the beautiful yet complex creation of nature. The Corporate World, where intercourse of factors of production happens on a regular basis to produce money..more money; has become a major factor responsible for teaching human civilization to hate their bodies. It is very surprising to see that the Corporate indoctrination now has taken a form of cultural assertion. Let us take an example of ‘shaving razor’ for women which is now widely available in the market. For some people it may sound ultra-gross to talk about hairy female underarms. The history of shaving teaches us that the idea of shaving was largely unknown to women till the dawn of 20th century which was also characterized by the occurrence of First World War and simultaneously the growth of consumerism as a by-product of ultracapitalism. I am of the firm opinion that it was during the

from this very original version of the NNM, then it should be agreed upon by the Naga people, meaning Nagas has to rectify the alternative view through another plebiscite. Without that any political agreement signed by any parties that fall short of complete sovereignty will remain invalid. The objective of the NNM is not for increasing the number of seats in Nagaland legislative assembly or for getting more representation in Indian parliament or to be content with some financial package, which will only benefit those corrupt Naga politicians, and not even for the formation of any Pan Naga socio-cultural body. The Nagas’ pursuit, as a group of people, no matter how small in term of size, is nothing more than a quest for a basic human right that is entitled to people of all race, colour, creed and religion. This Nagas’ political aspiration is unquestionable and indisputable, as history has recorded. What comes out of this seven decades old resistance movement is the story of the Nagas suffering under forced occupation who are yearning to regain their historical right that is deny to them and struggling for a political cause for getting a respectable place in the comity of nations and to live a life of dignity and honour. And worst of all, the Naga homeland, which should have already become a sovereign nation seven decades back had India respect the right of the Nagas, was divided into different artificial political boundaries placing Nagas under different administration through the arbitrary and illegal redrawing of Naga political map by the colonial powers. Over the past decades the historical tragedy that floats up to confront the NMM is the emergence of the question of India within the dynamic of the movement. When the idea of free Naga nation was conceived in 1929, the question of relation with India or for that matter secession with India was never an issue. There is no question of a nation, which had never been under the control of/ rule by any other nation or empire at any point of history, attempting to succeed from another nation. However, the unfortunate and unexpected political interface between the two nations has time and again kept compelling the Nagas to depart from their political aspiration and seek alternative solution within the state of India. The lateral solution that GoI, in their best interest, tries to enforce upon the Nagas, under the guise of the peace process, with the hope that the later would compromised with their historical rights. The present political talk between GoI and the Nagas, represented by NSCN and NNPGs seeks a way for a peaceful and honorable settlement to the Indo-Naga political conflict of 70 plus years, which is, no doubt, the most comfortable path for any conflict resolution. Conversely, given the historical context of the right of the Nagas, the issue of Naga sovereignty and self determination cannot be ignored nor

can be drop at any stage of negotiation by the negotiating parties. This should occupy the central premise upon which the negotiation required to take place. If Nagas’ representative has to fail in this endeavor, then the current political talk would provide an opportunity for GoI to construct an alternative narrative to the NNM towards ending Southeast Asia’s longest running “insurgency”, the same mistake that was made in the past which led to the signing of the infamous Shillong Accord. And the possible scenario of finding solution within the ambit of the constitution of India that could emerge again from this talk would be the most disastrous and humiliating one for the Nagas as our effort and sacrifice of more than seventy years would lay wasted, and the peace process would become just a paltry political tool use by New Delhi to betray the Nagas. The recent reports of RN Ravi’s discourse on “basis of framework agreement” claiming that settlement would be from “within the Indian federation with a special status” and “a parliamentary standing committee asking Ministry of Home affairs to prepare a detailed and generous rehabilitation cum settlement scheme for the surrendered cadres as per Naga Accord” indicates the exclusion of the issue of Naga integration and sovereignty from the purview of peace process, and cast serious doubt on the sincerity and commitment of GoI. Not forgetting, willful and deliberate act of violation of ceasefire ground rules by Indian Army (Assam Rifles) by regularly raiding the house of Naga senior citizens and senior functionaries of Naga political groups based on mere suspicion. Such an act of savagery on the part of state forces is unacceptable to the Nagas nay the watching civilized world. At the same time, the infamous twist by Ram Madhav calling for “election for solution” amidst boycott call by the Nagas for the state election in February only to once again discard the prospect of Naga solution by claiming the issue as “very complicated” and cannot be “poll centric” eight months later. Is this meant what has been promised to the Nagas during the election need not be carry forward and simply to be dismissed as an election propaganda to fool the Nagas? If this what the approach of GoI in dealing with the Nagas, and not willing to negotiate the terms that stand for the legitimate right of the Nagas, which is nothing more than an insult to the Naga people, then it is high time for the Nagas and the Nagas negotiators in particular to reconsider our position on the future of NNM vis-à-vis the current peace process with New Delhi. Will we the Nagas of our generation willing to concede the legitimate right of ours in exchange for some convenience of our time and let the NNM go down in history to be remembered as the lost cause? T

The darkest side of Nagaland for Christ

he Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi once said, ‘I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ’. Having stated this statement, we did not mean to put down our own faith of being Christians, however we just want to make a thought and reflection to our fellow Christian readers, of how committed are we to the Christian values that Christ has taught us through the Bible. The killing of a teenage girl at Kohima on the 13th November 2018 and later the body was discovered from the new building block under construction at Dr. Neilhouzhu Kire Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) is condemnable and unacceptable to the Naga society, particularly for the Christians it is against the sixth commandment of God which says ‘Thou shalt not kill’ (Deut 5:17). It is high time for Christians to stop such violence and crime especially in our state like Nagaland, where Christians are majority. Hence, we join the bereaved family for losing their loved one, and at the same time we do not want to stay on quietly to ourselves without sharing our views and reflections to others after reading this sad incident in the newspapers for the past few days. It is so unfortunate for the family to experience such unexpected tragic incident; in fact, the victim’s mother said that her daughter had left home on Sunday morning to be at a prayer house for three days (NP November 15, 2018). Various organizations in Nagaland had condemned this sad event in the state. This is a good sign and a step forward to eradicate such barbaric act in the state. On the other hand, the famous universal principle says ‘Good must be done and evil must be avoided’. We were really shock when we read the paper that a 14 year old boy is accused of doing the crime (NP November 16, 2018). Here comes the duty of parents and the Christian leaders in molding up the children in a correct way. Someone has rightly said ‘Christ way is always the best way’, therefore; If Nagaland is for Christ, why are we not inculcating the Christian values to the children. This is a very sad incident and it is a high time for parents and Christian leaders to grow up the children in a good and correct way. Christ summarizes the Ten Commandments in just two

Body shaming: A corporate scam

beginning of 20th century first Shaving Blade for ladies was introduced. The shaving razor was widely sold throughout Europe propagating hairless armpits and smooth legs as a sign of classic beauty. The beauty of women in our society is defined by two elements-one is the MEN and the second is-the institutions built by MEN. Therefore, it would not be wrong to say that the beauty defined by the ‘SYSTEM’ would be nothing less than a conspiracy that the mighty male dominated Corporate World hatched against the humanity. Similarly, other products like Fairness Cream, Vaginal Tightening Cream, Perfumes, Body Sprays teaches nothing else but body shaming which now has become an inalienable part of modern civic sense and culture. The money minted by injecting ‘guilt’ in the minds of people is a smartest and easiest way the money ever earned in the history of mankind. We reject nature when we reject the natural gifts of the creator. Hygiene and Beauty are nowadays dictatorially defined by the Television Ads at the insistence of their corporate masters that criminalize sweating, natural body smell, stretch marks, lose vagina, bald heads, small boobs, large boobs, manboobs and hairy armpits-also the legs. In the quest of minting pure profits Patriarchy and Corporate manipulators have cunningly conspired together to manipulate the minds of women by injecting thoughts

of shaming their own natural body, moreover, this criminal conspiracy also victimized menfolks by tapping their sexuality making them shaming/hating their own body smell, body structure as well as appearance. No doubt, for the same purpose companies need to use more and more women in their Ads to sale out their ‘only-for-men’-OFM products. In 1960’s Hippi Movement started spreading all over the world. The major tagline of movement was ‘Acceptance‘. Hippies were known for their long hairs and un-shaved bodies. The appearance of Hippies symbolized ‘Acceptance’ and ‘Respect’ to the creation. Hippi movement was one of the largest social movements that revolted against the ‘stereotypes’ and ‘cultural, political, social and corporate slavery’. The reason behind referring to Hippi Movement is to understand that there are far better things in world than being content in the slavery of corporate indoctrination. Today’s modern generation of 21st Century is the biggest victim of this multizillion Dollar corporate beauty scam. The true meaning of beauty that Hippi Movement tried to revive is now lost in the Tsunami of Corporate influence. Artificial Skin color and texture, unnatural alcohol sparked body fragrance, false sense of virginity, pumped-in muscles, smooth buttery body, Boob Jobs, Nose Jobs, Hairs Jobs, artificial eye-lashes,

artificially colored lips and cheeks etc; has been made as essential requirements to fit in the modern definition of ‘beauty’ as decided and dictated by Corporate World. Today’s generation cannot withstand the strong smell of natural sweat of body because the culture of consumerism taught them to hate that. Women are worried about their small boobs because they are constantly exposed to the definition of ideal size of boobs decided by the corporate world. Overweight men and women are taught to hate their bodies. Thin women are taught to hate their bodies. Even the stretch marks- once a sign of beauty and pride, nowadays hated by women. Men are shaving their chests. Women are tightening their Vaginas and armpits. People hate natural smell, but expect that the artificial fragrance of Chemicals will attract woman- i sometimes wonder; are our women that cheap?… what insanity is this? Where are we leading to? There are better issues in world that needs to be given attention than giving unnecessary attention to something that separate us from our true existence. Nowadays people are talking about ‘tolerance’ (Wink !Wink !). It seems intolerance has increased in society as the quotient of patience seems to have gone down to its lowest ever level. People are made to fight with each other in the name of caste, creed and religion.

People are taught to judge the others on the basis of their social, political, sexual orientations. Corporates are teaching us to hate nature and love chemicals. Pharmaceutical industries are creating diseases and the cures in their laboratories. Weapon industry put its blood, sweat and soul to keep the world as insecure as possible to run their business. Undoubtedly, we are living in an era of contradictions where man is separated from a man. However, let us keep aside socio-religiouscultural-political intolerance for a while;and understand that; at least if Man tolerate, accept and respect the natural existence and choices of the other everything will be streamlined. Challenging all the notions of the beauty that the corporate world has created I

commandments, that is, Love of God and love of Neighbour. These two commandments of Jesus must be taught to children in a very special way in order to stop such crime committed by minors. The act of killing a fellow being is not only against Christian values but also it is universally unacceptable and condemnable. Such unfortunate incident must be stopped immediately in the society and children must be guided to what is good. As Christians we believe that anything that is against our faith is sin. Hence, to disobey the commandments of God such as killing or murdering a person is a great sin and no one is expected to go against God’s commandments. As we have mentioned in the beginning we wrote this article not to attack or to pinpoint the failure of Christian teaching, but our main aim is to give a thought and reflection to all the readers particular to the Christian readers. As Christians, we presume that if Christian values are strong or are imparted properly to that boy of 14 years of age (who is accused of committing the crime) such step of taking away someone’s life won’t happen. As a result, the darkest side of Nagaland for Christ is when the Christian leaders or the parents fail to educate Christian values to their own children. Consequently, as Christians we are supposed to spread peace and harmony to one another for Christ taught us through his teachings in the Bible. Let the dream of Nagaland for Christ, be the perfect example to all Christians all over the world. However, let this idea of Nagaland for Christ should be imparted to all people in order to achieve peace and security in the state. It will be so unlucky for the state, to proclaim Nagaland for Christ if lots of killing and injustice done to one another in the state. And so, let the idea of Nagaland for Christ makes all people living in the state to live in peace and harmony with each other, or else if social evils like murder, discrimination, corruption, and nepotism control the state, then that will be the darkest side of the idea, Nagaland for Christ. Finally, let Christian values reign in our state for the betterment of all and for the good of the society as a whole. Aiborlang Nongsiej and Tsungkamla H. Yimchunger, Bosco B. Ed College, Dimapur

He/she is human, and has blemishes. Here a human being stands, visible. This body is acceptable - pubescent, awkward, marred, scarred, burned. You don’t have to be invisible to be beautiful or handsome. We are all good enough. There is nothing wrong with our bodies. Buying nature’s free gift

Sir,

The dry wintry season is already in our midst making the lives of general public more difficult, especially in the capital of Kohima. The water supply situation in various parts of Kohima is rather irregular even during rainy season. People resort to buying water by the gallons to meet their requirements and half of one’s salary goes into purchasing nature’s free gift. I just hope that this Christmas I will get water supply from my kitchen tap as a present. Kevibou Angami, PWD, Kohima

The report tilted “Entertainment Goes Online” is based on a consumer survey designed to understand consumers’ motivations in adopting OTT content over other conventional modes of content delivery. Survey results showed that there is room for many types of OTT models such as SVOD (subscription-based platforms), AVOD (advertising-based platforms) and TVOD (transaction-based platforms) to succeed in the market. This growth is being driven by rising affluence, increase in penetration of data into rural markets and adoption across demographic segments including women and older generations, according to the report by global management consulting firm Boston Consulting Group (BCG). “Majority of India has a single TV per household. New Delhi, Nov 20 (Agencies): The Reserve Bank of India has transferred around Rs 2.5 lakh crore, 75 per cent of its income, to the government in last five years, the Times of India reported. RBI’s reserves was one of the major contentious issues which led to a rift between the central bank and the government recently with the latter demanding higher share from RBI’s reserves which can be used for public spending in an election year. According to the ToI report, the Comptroller and Auditor General studied RBI’s income, expenditure and surplus transferred to the Centre between 2013-14 and 2017-18 and found that out of its income of Rs 3.3 lakh crore, RBI had transferred Rs 2.48 lakh crore to the government. This was 75 per cent of the central bank’s annual income during the period.

We think this can generate massive employment opportunities with over 15,000 jobs in these regions, thereby boosting immense economic output,” he said. Jain explained that offline retail is still a huge segment in our country with nearly 40 per cent of the offline market focused in rural regions. Through its various efforts, the company expects offline retail to account for half of its smartphone sales by next year. Xiaomi expects to ramp up the number of Mi Homes to 100 (from current 50) and take its Mi Preferred Partners programme to 100 cities (from over 50 now).

to boost the economy. “The decision to extend the timeline for the full implementation of Basel 3 guidelines by a year is a credit negative for Indian public sector banks,” said Srikanth Vadlamani, vice president, financial institutions group at Moody’s Investors Service. The common equity Tier 1 ratio or core capital “over the next 12 months would be lower than what we currently expect” for some banks, Vadlamani added. He also raised concerns over the central bank considering to give banks a leeway in classifying stressed assets of small borrowers which will ease the credit flow to this sector. “The track record of such dispensations on asset classification, when seen over the last few years in India, has shown that they have largely been unsuccessful in addressing the underlying stress,” he added.

New Delhi, Nov 20 (Agencies): The Reserve Bank of India’s decision to allow lenders more time to adhere to additional capital buffer norms under Basel 3 is credit negative for the country’s state-run banks, Moody’s Investors Service said in a release on Tuesday. The RBI after a ninehour marathon board meeting announced late Monday that it has extended the timeline for Indian banks to set aside an additional 0.625 percent as capital conservation buffer by one year to March 31, 2020 to help banks to lend more. The decision came after persistent demand from top government officials and one independent director to ease lending and capital rules for banks, provide more liquidity to the shadow banking sector, support lending to small businesses and let the government use more of the RBI’s surplus reserves

New Delhi, Nov 20 (PTI): India’s largest smartphone vendor Xiaomi said Tuesday it will set up 5,000 Mi Stores across rural India by the end of 2019, a move that is expected to generate over 15,000 jobs. It operates its own chain of Mi Homes, apart from Mi Preferred Partners through franchise model. “It’s been over a year since we started offering our products through offline retail and we have seen strong growth there ... About 4-5 months ago, we started piloting what we called Offline 2.0 - where we are going to tier IV, V and beyond, rural India with our offline retail offering,” Xiaomi Vice-President and India Managing Director Manu Jain told reporters here. Judge halts Trump’s asylum ban

Trump’s administration has argued that he has the executive power to curb immigration in the name of national security -- a power he invoked right after taking office last year with a controversial ban on travelers from several mostly Muslim countries. The final version of the order was upheld by the US Supreme Court on June 26 after a protracted legal battle. When the new policy

was announced by the Department of Homeland Security on November 8, a senior administration official said it would address what he called the “historically unparalleled abuse of our immigration system” along the border with Mexico. Administration officials say anyone who manages to get across can request asylum and subsequently often vanish while their case sits in the court system. “The vast majority of

Barcelona, Nov 20 (AFP): One person was killed and 44 others were injured, three seriously, on Tuesday when a commuter train derailed near Barcelona due to a landslide caused by heavy rains, emergency services and Spain’s rail operator said. Two carriages of a convoy of six came off the

tracks at 6:15 am (local time) near the town of Vacarisses, 35 kilometres northeast of Barcelona, emergency services said on Twitter. Of the 131 people on board, 41 were lightly injured, three were seriously injured and one person died, it added. Images broadcast on Spanish television

showed rescue workers evacuating passengers. Rocks piled up on the side of one carriage. The train, which was travelling between Manresa and Barcelona, derailed due to a landslide following several days of heavy rain in the region, train operator Adif said in a statement. The area was fitted with netting to hold back rocks “but it did not resist the landslide,” Transport Minister Jose Luis Abalos told news radio Cadena Ser. He said his ministry would investigate the cause of the accident. Landslides had already caused trains to derail in the same area in 2009 and 2011, according to local press reports. No one was injured in the derailment in 2009 but in 2011 the 11 people were lightly hurt, according to the reports. In 2013, 79 people died when a train travelling from Madrid to the northwestern city of Santiago de Compostela came off the tracks. It was Spain’s worst train wreck for decades.

Melbourne, Nov 20 (IANS): Three men were arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of plotting an “Islamic State (IS)-isnpired” terrorist attack in Melbourne, police said. “They were certainly looking at a place of mass gathering, where there would be crowds. They were trying to focus on trying to have a place where they could kill as many people as possible,” Graham Ashton, Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police, told the media. Ashton said that the suspects, who have not been identified, tried to get .22 caliber semi-automatic rifles but that the exact place in which they sought to attack was unknown, reports CNN. The possible attack “was inspired” by the IS’s modus operandi but was not “directed” by this extremist Islamic organisation, the Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner, Ian McCartney, said.

Washington, Nov 20 (IANS): NASA has chosen Jezero Crater delta, where the sediments contain clays and carbonates, as the landing site for its upcoming Mars 2020 Rover mission, the US space agency said. Jezero Crater, 45 kilometres in size, is located on the western edge of Isidis Planitia -- a giant impact basin just north of the Martian equator. Its ancient lake-delta system offers many promising sampling targets of at least five different kinds of rock, including clays and carbonates that have high potential to preserve signatures of past life.

“The landing site in Jezero Crater offers geologically rich terrain, with land forms reaching as far back as 3.6 billion years, that could potentially answer important questions in planetary evolution and astrobiology,” Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, said in a statement on Monday. “Getting samples from this unique area will revolutionize how we think about Mars and its ability to harbour life,” he added. The crater, once home to an ancient river delta, could have collected and preserved ancient organic

It will not only seek signs of ancient habitable conditions and past microbial life but will also collect rock and soil samples and store them in a cache on the planet’s surface. The Maldives, under Yameen who was ousted by Solih in elections this year, had signed the FTA with China, becoming the only second nation to strike such a deal after Pakistan. The deal, opposed by Solih’s party, had raised eyebrows in India and other countries. It was rushed through without any debate in the Maldivian parliament. Yameen is said to have given away lot of infrastructure projects to the Chinese companies, racking up huge debts. Male drifted towards Beijing under Yameen, who openly showed his backing

It says it will review all Chinese projects in the country. Asked about the Solih’s decision, Geng said: “I am not aware of the details mentioned by you just now. “According to my information, not long back President Xi Jinping’s special envoy and Minister of Culture and Tourism Luo Shugang attended the inauguration of President Solih and he had a meeting with him as well. “In the meeting, President Solih said that the new Maldives government attaches importance to and is committed to deepening relations with China and is willing to deepen practical cooperation and adding a new dimension to the bilateral ties. “President Solih also said that China offers the most economic development assistance to the Maldives. The judge’s restraining order remains in effect until the court decides on the case.

Beijing, Nov 20 (IANS): China on Tuesday said it hoped the Maldives will think before scraping the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with it after an influential leader of the island nation said his country will pull out of it as the deal was blindly pro-Beijing. Beijing also sought to put a brave face in the light of the Maldives’ new President Ibrahim Solih’s decision to review the Chinese investments made during the presidency of pro-China leader Abdullah Yameen. The Chinese Foreign Ministry evaded a question whether Beijing felt the new Maldivian government was steering the country back towards India after being close to Beijing under Yameen. “China-Maldives FTA is based upon the friendly and equal consultations of the two sides. The early implementation of the agreement will deliver benefits to the two sides at an early date. We believe the Maldives government will make the right choice in this regard,” spokesperson Geng Shuang said. Mohamed Nasheed, a top leader of the governing alliance of the country,

these applications eventually turn out to be non-meritorious,” a senior administration official said, asking not to be identified. Less than 10 per cent of cases result in asylum being granted, the government says. Human rights campaigners and other critics of the Trump crackdown say that by restricting asylum seekers to border crossing points - which are already under enormous pressure the government is effectively shutting the door on people who may truly be fleeing for their lives. “The government cannot abdicate its responsibility towards migrants fleeing harm,” the New York Immigration Coalition advocacy group said. But the administration official argued that “what we’re attempting to do is trying to funnel credible fear claims, or asylum claims, through the ports of entry where we are better resourced.” In 2018, border patrols registered more than 400,000 illegal border crossers, homeland security said. And in the last five years, the number of those requesting asylum has increased by 2,000 percent, it said.

Washington, Nov 20 (AFP): A federal judge on Monday put a temporary halt to a Trump administration order denying the possibility of asylum to people who enter the US illegally. President Donald Trump issued the proclamation earlier this month as a matter of what he called national security as a caravan of thousands of Central American migrants made its way through Mexico toward the US border. US District Judge Jon Tigar in San Francisco issued a temporary restraining order against the Trump proclamation, thus granting a request from human rights groups who had sued shortly after the order was announced. Under the proclamation, Trump said only people who enter the US at official checkpoints - as opposed to sneaking across the border can apply for asylum. Judge Tigar wrote that the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 states that any foreigner who arrives in the US, “whether or not at a designated port of arrival,” may apply for asylum. “The rule barring asylum for immigrants who

Delhi CM attacked with chilli powder Modi calls note ban ‘bitter medicine’

New Delhi, Nov 20 (PTI): A man threw chilli powder at Arvind Kejriwal outside his office in the Delhi Secretariat on Tuesday, an attack the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) described as “politically motivated” while asserting that the BJP is hatching a conspiracy in collusion with Delhi Police to attack the chief minister. Delhi Police, however, issued a statement recounting the incident but did not specify whether the man threw chilli powder. The statement mentioned that the man possessed a pouch which apparently contained chilli powder. E ve n a s t h e m a n behind the attack - Anil Kumar Sharma was detained, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said his party would not be “cowed” by these “petty tactics” by the BJP. Police said 40-yearold Sharma, a resident of Naraina has been detained for questioning.

While the AAP blamed the BJP for the alleged attack, the Delhi chief of the saffron party Manoj Tiwari said such incidents “cannot be tolerated or justified by anybody” and called for a high-level probe. Officials said Kumar was targeting the bespectacled chief minister’s eyes. Kejriwal’s spectacles broke but his eyes seemed to have been spared any damage, they added. Kumar, whose Aadhaar card has been recovered, brought the chilli powder to the secretariat in packets of ‘khaini’, or chewing tobacco, they said. After throwing red pepper powder on Kejriwal, Kumar threatened to shoot him after he comes out of jail, an official recounted. The incident took place outside the chief minister’s chamber on the third floor when he was leaving for lunch. A A P ’s n a t i o n a l s p o k e s p e r s o n R a g h av Chadha, who was behind

Arvind Kejriwal (File) Kejriwal when the incident took place tweeted, “Was right behind CM @ArvindKejriwal at the Secretariat when he was suddenly attacked, on 3rd floor right outside his office. Shocking lapse of security. Is this Delhi Police’s incompetent effort to protect an elected CM? AAP spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj accused the BJP for the alleged attack. According to Bhardwaj, the attack happened at the chief minister’s office, which is a “high-

security” zone. He said it was a serious matter and termed the attack “politically motivated”. “The BJP is behind the attack and the accused are being aided by the Modi government,” he alleged. The Delhi BJP chief said such incidents “cannot be tolerated or justified by anybody”. “This calls for a high-level probe,” Tiwari said. Officials close to Kejriwal accused the Delhi Police of being lax in providing him security and alleged that this was the third attempt to harm him in less than a month. The AAP alleged that water bottles were thrown at Kejriwal by Tiwari at the inauguration ceremony of Signature Bridge earlier this month. “Around the time of Dussehra, an unidentified man had barged inside Kejriwal’s residence and had tried to attack the CM,” Bhardwaj added.

In a statement issued later, Delhi Police said the incident took place around 2.25 pm on the third floor of Delhi Secretariat. “When the CM was coming out of his chamber, one person later identified as Anil tried to hand over his complaint to the chief minister who in turn passed it on to a staff member,” said the statement. Meanwhile Anil bowed down to touch the feet of Kejriwal. The chief minister’s security tried to take him away but in the process Kejriwal’s spectacles fell, it said. S u b s e q u e n t ly t h e security personnel took him aside and found him carrying a pouch in his hand, which apparently contained chilli powder, it said. “Sharma was visiting the Secretariat with reference of some staff. He has been detained for further questioning,” the statement added.

High alert in Delhi; cops look Take the lead in fight against for 2 suspected Jaish terrorists climate change: Vardhan

Delhi police is on the lookout for two suspected Jaish terrorists in the city. (File) New Delhi, Nov 20 (AGENCIES): Two days after the Amritsar blast, the Delhi police on Tuesday sounded an alert and released pictures of two men, suspected to be Jaishe-Mohammed terrorists who may seek to carry out an attack in the city. Police said that guest houses,

hotels and paying guest accommodations where foreign students usually stay, are being scanned to trace the two. In the photo released by the Delhi Police, the two men are seen leaning on a milestone that reads Firozpur 9 km and Delhi 360 km. Punjab’s Firozpur

is 133 km from Amritsar where three persons were killed and 20 injured when two motorcycle-bor ne youths threw a grenade at a religious congregation on Sunday. Police have pasted posters of the two suspects across the city and have also circulated their photos on the social media to alert people to inform the police immediately wherever and whenever the duo is spotted. A senior officer who did not wish to be named said that they are yet to get information about the whereabouts of these men in Delhi. Police said that a warning, recently issued by the Jaish-e-Mohammed about avenging the death of its chief Maulana Masood Azhar’s nephew in an encounter in Kashmir on October 30, cannot be ruled out. “We got inputs that they’re heading towards Delhi. We have increased the vigil in the bordering areas as well as in the city. Second-hand car dealers are being questioned and the parking lots are being scanned to spot abandoned vehicles,” the officer from the Delhi’s anti-terror special cell, said. The officer said that the district police have also been alerted to maintain high security.

New Delhi, Nov 20 (PTI): The climate actions of developing nations are ambitious despite their contribution to climate change being minimal, Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan said Tuesday, asking developed nations to fulfill their climate obligations “expeditiously”. Addressing the ministerial meet of BASIC (Brazil, South Africa, India and China) countries hosted by the Union Environment Ministry, Vardhan said developed countries must take the lead in the fight against climate change by their actions as well as by their provision of enhanced financial support and other aid to developing countries. Ahead of the crucial climate conference in Poland later this year, the Indian minister said developed countries seemed to be “shedding” their responsibilities in the pre-2020 period and delaying climate action, which he said would place additional mitigation burden on developing countries. Vardhan said developed countries are “far from realising” their climate finance commitment of mobilising USD 100 billion by 2020 and asserted the developed nations should not only make urgent efforts to honour this commitment but also progressively and substantially scale up their

financial support in post2020 period. “The climate actions of developing countries are ambitious despite the fact that our contribution to climate change is minimal. The historical responsibility lies squarely with the developed countries. Therefore, it is the developed countries who must fulfill their climate obligations expeditiously,” he said. He said lack of ambition of developed countries and their unfulfilled promises should not place additional burden on developing countries to further enhance the level of ambition of their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a rally ahead of Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections, in Rewa, Tuesday. (PTI) Jhabua/Rewa, Nov 20 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday said he used the “bitter medicine” of demonetisation to bring back money into banking system and to give “proper treatment to deep-rooted corruption system” in the country. He also asked people to vote “intelligently” in the November 28 Assembly poll, asking them to ensure that “not even a single Congress candidate” is elected. Addressing a poll rally at Jhabua for the November 28 Assembly elections, Modi said, “We use poisonous medicine to eradicate termite. Similarly, I used note ban as a ‘tez’ (bitter) medicine to treat corruption in the country”. “People who used to hide their money under beds, in their houses, offices and factories are now paying tax of every single penny and we are using this money for the right schemes for the common man,” Modi said. Modi said his government has so far disbursed loans to 14 crore people, “that too without guaran-

tee”, under the ambitious Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana. “The amount of work we (BJP-led government) have done in four years, Congress would be able to do it in 10 years,” Modi said. “Remember the time when Congress was in power here in Madhya Pradesh, what was the condition of people? Madhya Pradesh does not deserve a government which never thinks about the state’s welfare,” Modi said, targeting the Congress party. On ‘housing for all’, Modi said, “My dream is to provide ‘pucca’ houses to everyone in the country by 2022. We have so far given keys of such houses to 1.25 crore people”. Attacking Congress, Modi termed the Congressled UPA regime as ‘Madam ki Sarakar’ and ‘remote controlwali sarkar’. Addressing a poll rally in Rewa, Modi reminded voters that Madhya Pradesh has a “double-engine” as BJP is in power in the state and the Centre. Targeting the NehruGandhi family, Modi said,

“History proves that no dynasty prevails after its fourth generation rule in Delhi and Congress will also meet the same fate”. He asked people to “think for a moment” before voting about what Congress has done for them compared to 15 years of BJP rule in the state. “When a pregnant mother had to be rushed to hospital on a tractor or a cot, there were no roads then from the village to the city. Many times either the mother or the child or both died. Those were the days of Congress rule,” he said. Asking people to be active participants in development process, Modi said, “If people work for 10 hours, then I will work for 11 hours for the country’s progress”. Modi credited Chouhan with developing the state. “He is in power for the last 15 years but effectively got only four and a half years as during rest of the period, the state always fought with the Centre for its rights in the UPA-led regime at the Centre, he said.

TN CM visits cyclone-hit areas; likely to meet PM Pudukottai (TN), Nov 20 (PTI): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami on Tuesday visited the districts hit by Cyclone Gaja, distributed relief materials among the affected people and said he would meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this week to seek central assistance. Even as life was limping back to normal five days after the cyclone that left 46 people dead, a fresh spell of rain hit parts of the Cauvery delta region, hampering relief work since this morning. The weather office has forecast heavy rains in the region under the influence of a well-marked low pressure in the southwest of Bay of Bengal. The rains also forced Palaniswami to cut short his tour of the ravaged districts as the inclement weather prevented his helicopter from landing in Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur. Cyclone Gaja crossed the coast near Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district, about 300 km from ChenK Y M C

K Palaniswami (File) nai, with a speed of up to 120 kmph last Friday, leaving a trail of destruction in over 10 districts in the southern part of the state. A political slugfest broke out over the pace of relief work, with the DMK slamming the chief minister on Tuesday for his “delayed” visit and Palaniswami questioning the timing of the Opposition attack, urging them to bury political differences and join the relief activities. Palaniswami, accompanied by ministers, including deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam, visited Pudukottai and Thanjavur districts in the morning and asserted that

the relief work were being taken on a war-footing. “I am supposed to meet the prime minister day after tomorrow. Will seek funds from him,” he told reporters in neighbouring Tiruchirappalli after cutting short his tour. The government will certainly take steps to get central funds and submit details of the damage with proof, he said. Palaniswami said the cyclone had badly hit both rural and urban areas, and noted that the due to the precautionary steps taken, the impact had been reduced to some extent. The chief minister, who arrived in Tiruchirappalli from Chennai by a flight, travelled by an IAF helicopter to Pudukottai and Thanjavur, while Nagapattinam -- the worst affected district -- and Thiruvarur were also in his itinerary. Earlier, at Pudukottai, he lashed out at Opposition criticism of the government’s handling of the situation, saying they should take the cue from neighbouring Kerala.

Citing the recent devastating floods in Kerala, Palaniswami said the Opposition there raised no issues then, though it took about a month for the relief activities to be completed. He asked the Opposition parties to bury political differences and contribute towards the relief activities, adding all should go by their conscience and do their bit in helping the affected people. Stalin hit back at Palaniswami, asking what the chief minister was doing for the last five days. “He should have visited the affected places immediately. Rather, he was attending a grand government function in Salem (on Friday). Questions were raised why he had not gone there... Out of fear, he went on the fifth day today,” he told reporters in Chennai. The DMK chief also accused Palaniswami of distributing relief materials only to the ruling party members, a charge countered by the chief minister.

1984 riots: One sentenced to death

Family members of the victims of 1984 anti-Sikh riots celebrate outside the Patiala House Court in New Delhi, Tuesday after the pronouncement of the first death punishment in the case. (PTI)

New Delhi, Nov 20 (AGENCIES): A Delhi court today sentenced a man to death for killing two persons in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and injuring three others. Additional sessions judge, Ajay Pandey sentenced transporter Yashpal Singh to death for murdering Hardev Singh and Avtar Singh by setting them on fire in the riots that followed the assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984. Retired postmaster Naresh Sehrawat, who was also convicted in the case last week, was sentenced to

life imprisonment. Both the convicts are in their 50s. The two were also convicted for injuring Surjeet Singh, Sangat Singh and Kuldeep Singh. Soon after the verdict, the two were arrested and sent to jail. The sentencing was held in the Tihar Jail due to security concerns, reported PTI. This came after Yashpal was assaulted on Thursday allegedly by Delhi’s Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) legislator Manjinder Singh Sirsa, in Patiala House Courts, after the court reserved its order on the quantum of punishment.

This was the first conviction in five of the eight cases — reopened and investigated by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which was constituted in 2015 — in which charge sheets were filed. Investigation into the other three cases, which, SIT members said involved Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, are still pending. After last week’s verdict, Kumar Gyanesh, additional deputy commissioner of Delhi Police and a member of the SIT, said the conviction came on the basis of the statement of 18 witnesses, who were

unwanted chickens. “Chickens used for meat are bred to have fleshier upper bodies, and those used for eggs are bred to produce an unnatural number of eggs,” PETA said in a statement. Hence, PETA said, the egg industry considers most male chicks useless because they cannot produce eggs and are not the type used for meat. The animal rights organisation filed the petition following an eyewitness expose of several hatcheries and farms in Andhra Pradesh

BJP slams Tejashwi for use of foul language against Nitish

Patna, Nov 20 (PTI): NDA constituents, JD(U) and BJP,on Tuesday took strong exception to the use of foul language against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar by leader of the opposition in the state assembly Tejashwi Yadav on his twitter handle. In a strongly-worded statement, BJP spokesman Nikhil Anand deplored a tweet by Yadav, a formerl Deputy Chief Minister, wherein he had addressed Kumar as “Shri Shri Dhikkarvadi 420 Nitish Chacha ji” (condemnible, fraudulent Nitish uncle”. Yadav had made the remark while sharing a report by a news portal about the current imbroglio in the CBI. In the report it has been alleged that Bihar Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi and a top official in the PMO were behind cases lodged against Yadav, his father Lalu Prasad and other members of their family in the IRCTC land scam. The scam pertains to the period when Prasad

re-examined by the SIT besides other evidences such as medical examination reports of the victims and photographs pertaining to the crime. The case was registered in 1993 at Vasant Kunj police station after Hardev’s brother Santok Singh filed an affidavit before the Justice Ranganath Misra Commission — formed to probe the killings. The city police had closed the case in 1994 for want of evidence. However, the SIT reopened the case in 2016, after investigators, scrutinising 293 cases that were earlier declared ‘untraced’ or ‘cancelled’, found clues pertaining to the case. The SIT finally decided to probe 60 cases, of which 52 were closed for want of evidence while eight were reopened. The SIT members told the court that statements of Kuldeep, Sangat and Surjeet, who had survived the attack, were recorded after their whereabouts were traced. The three identified their neighbours Sehrawat and Yashpal Singh as the accused. They alleged that the two were part of the mob, which had set three grocery shops in Mahipalpur on fire on November 1, 1984.

MP polls: SP promise houses for poor Bhopal, Nov 20 (PTI): Building solar panel-fitted houses worth Rs 5 lakh for the poor, setting up a Rs 5,000-crore farmers’ fund and providing unemployment allowances are the major promises made by the Samajwadi Party in its manifesto for the Madhya Pradesh Assembly election. The SP, which is contesting 51 out 230 seats, has also proposed a sixmonth imprisonment and Rs 1-lakh penalty for traders who purchase farmers’ produce below the minimum support price (MSP). The party also promised development of “smart villages” and providing milk and ghee to pregnant women and the students in the midday meal. “The SP does what its says. There is no difference between what we say and what we do. The BJP had promised that sugarcane farmers in Uttar Pradesh would be paid well for their produce, but didn’t keep that promise. The BJP is known for not keeping its promises,” party chief Akhilesh Yadav said, while releasing the manifesto here on Tuesday. Yadav said the BJP had also promised to provide laptops in UP, but the people were still waiting.

Sabarimala, Nov 20 (IANS): Compared to previous years, there has been a fall in the number of pilgrims who are arriving at the famed Sabarimala temple ever since the shrine opened on November 16 for the two-month pilgrimage season. In the past, the average daily number of pilgrims that visited the shrine during the season was around a lakh, but this time it has fallen dramatically. So far in the current season, over seven lakh devotees have registered online for darshan of the deity on various days. However, half of those who registered themselves in the past four days did not turn up. The main reason for this has been the tightening of the rules for pilgrimage by the police, after protests by Hindu groups since September 28 when the Supreme Court allowed women of all ages to enter the temple that hitherto banned girls and women aged 10-50. The apex court on November 13 refused to stay the September verdict. The Left Democratic Front government, led by

the CPI-M, has been trying to implement the apex court’s verdict, even as the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party and several Hindu groups are up in arms against the violation of the temple tradition. The police on Monday arrested 69 protesting pilgrims and sent them to jail. On Tuesday, the police further tightened the r ules and have started handing out notices to pilgrims at the Nilackal base camp that they should return in six hours after praying at the temple. The notice also states that the pilgrims are not supposed to speak to the media and if there is any violation, they are liable to be prosecuted. “The police after inspecting our vehicle told us that if any of the rules are broken, strict action would be taken,” a pilgrim told the media at Nilackal. A group of 110 devotees from Kalyan in Mumbai, which had reached Erumely, decided to return without praying at the temple. Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala, who arrived at the temple town, expressed anguish at the manner in which Chief

Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was handling the Sabarimala temple issue. “We fail to understand what has gone wrong with Vijayan. Who does he think he is? Nowhere else in the country would there be prohibitory orders at a religious centre,” said Chennithala. State BJP President P.S. Sreedharan Pillai told the media in Kochi that they are going to step up their protests against the high-handedness of the Kerala government. “We have three demands, including withdrawing of the prohibitory orders prevailing in the temple town, ending the ‘police raj’ against pilgrims and freedom to pray,” said Pillai. Senior BJP leader and member of Parliament V. Muraleedharan, who was at the temple town, said that it’s strange that the police say the pilgrims cannot chant Lord Ayyappa hymns. T h e Tr ava n c o r e Devaswom Board - the custodian of the temple in a statement issued here on Tuesday said that while the number of pilgrims in the first few days was less, it has started to pick up in the past two days.

rate security arrangements were made. He added that a number of old voters, including those over 100 years of age, also exercised their franchise and the Commission had made arrangements for them. The EC said with Tuesday’s polling percentage the total average turnout for Chhattisgarh has been 74.17 per cent, which may go up further. The Chief Minister went on to form a new government with the BJP which promptly came out with offer of support. Yadav, who has been named as the Chief Ministerial candidate of his party for the next assembly polls, alleged that the report vindicated his claim that the cases lodged against him and his family were part of a conspiracy hatched by Kumar in collaboration with the BJP.

SC furious over leak of Verma’s reply

New Delhi, Nov 20 (PTI): A furious Supreme Court on Tuesday told all the parties in a case involving the CBI’s top brass they did not “deserve” a hearing in the light of the purported leak of the agency chief ’s reply to the CVC’s probe findings against him and making public the sensational allegations by its senior officer Manish Kumar Sinha against top officials. Making it clear that the court was not a “platform” where people can come and express “whatever they want”, an anguished bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi heard the matter twice during the day and said it would not hear any party including the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) and confine itself to the purported leak and publication of Sinha’s allegations. The bench, also comprising justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph, vent its ire at the start of the hearing and reminded the parties its earlier order asking them to maintain confidentiality of the CVC’s preliminary inquiry report on corruption allegations against CBI Director Alok Kumar Verma and his response to

it was intended to ensure “respect” and the integrity of the Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI). As the hearing commenced, the bench referred to an article published by a news portal and solicited response from senior advocate Fali S Nariman, representing Verma, by saying, “It is only for you Mr Nariman and not as a counsel for Alok Verma. We have given this to you as you are one of the most respected and senior member of the institution. Please help us.” After going through the news report, Nariman said it was totally “unauthorised” and he was very “disturbed and shocked” by the “leak” and also questioned the move by lawyer Gopal Shankaranarayanan, who is also representing Verma, to mention the matter in the court on Monday to seek time to file a reply on behalf of the CBI director. After providing the copy of the news report to Nariman, the bench adjourned the hearing to November 29 on the plea filed by Verma, who has challenged the Centre’s decision to divest him of duties and sending him on forced leave, saying, “We

J-K records 71 pc voting in 2nd phase of panchayat polls

N a g p u r , N ov 2 0 (IANS): The toll in the blast at Army’s ammunition depot in Wardha of Maharashtra has shot up to six, officials said here on Tuesday. Another 10 persons are injured, including four seriously. The tragedy occurred at the Pulgaon Central Ammunition Depot (CAD) around 7.15 a.m when they were unloading a consignment of discarded ammunition intended for destruction at the demolition ground here. According to local eyewitnesses, the deafening blast occurred in one of the ammunition boxes which were being unloaded in the sprawling open demolition ground. They said the intensity of the blast was so severe that the victims were thrown several metres away and their bodies burnt and badly mangled, with body pieces strewn over a large area. The disposal work was being carried out by the Ordnance Factor y (OF), Khamaria, Jabalpur with the help of an authorized contractor at the Sonegaon demolition grounds.

Jammu, Nov 20 (PTI): An estimated 71.1 per cent of voters exercised their franchise Tuesday in the second phase of panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir which concluded peacefully amid tight security arrangements, officials said. “In the Phase-II of Panchayat polls held today, overall 71.1 per cent polling was witnessed across the state. An overwhelming 80.4 per cent polling was witnessed in Jammu division and 52.2 per cent in Kashmir division,” state Chief Electoral Officer Shaleen Kabra said. Polling in the districts falling in the winter zone, including the cold desert of Ladakh, where the minimum temperature has dropped to minus 8.8 degrees celsius in Kargil, started on a dull note but picked up pace as the day advanced and the warmth of winter sun spread. However, the situation was altogether different in the warmer Jammu region, where brisk polling was witnessed from 8 am. The polling concluded peacefully across 14 districts, seven each in Kashmir and Jammu divisions, at 2 pm, Kabra said. Udhampur district in

do not think any of you deserve any hearing”. In a sudden turn of events, Nariman re-entered the courtroom after few minutes and mentioned the case seeking re-hearing which was allowed. Nariman said the news article in question was published by the portal on November 17 and it was related to Verma’s reply given to the CVC during the preliminary enquiry proceedings while the order asking the CBI chief to respond to the vigilance probe’s finding was passed only the previous day. Referring to the media report, Nariman, during the first round of hearing of the day, said, “This gives a new twist to the word responsible press and freedom of press”, adding that the news portal and its journalists concerned be summoned by the court.

Jammu region recorded the highest polling of 83.9 per cent, while Anantnag district in south Kashmir recorded the lowest at 1.0 per cent, he said. Among other districts of Jammu division, he said Rajouri district witnessed 83.5 per cent polling, followed by Doda and Poonch (81.7 per cent each), Kathua (78.7 per cent) and Kishtwar (77.8 per cent). In Kashmir division, Kabra said Kupwara district topped the turnout chart with 69.7 per cent, followed by Kargil at 66.5 per cent and Bandipora and Leh (66.3 per cent each), Ganderbal (27.4 per cent) and Baramulla (11.2 per cent). In the first phase of panchayat polls on November 17, 74.1 per cent polling was recorded across the state, with 64.5 per cent in Kashmir division and 79.5 per cent in Jammu division. Voting for Phase-III of panchayat polls will take place on November 24. Officials said polling across the state ended peacefully with no untoward incident reported from anywhere. As many as 2,179 polling stations were set up across the state, including 828 in Kashmir and 1,351 in Jammu division, Kabra said.

“How can this come? It’s a leak. I myself am shattered the way it has been done,” he said. Meanwhile, the web portal, in its tweet, said, “This is to clarify that @ thewire_in stories were on Alok Verma’s responses to questions the CVC put to him. These were not in a sealed cover and were not meant for the SC. As for his response to CVC’s final report, handed over to SC in sealed cover, we haven’t seen/reported that.” The bench also referred to Nariman about the news articles published based on the allegations levelled by Sinha, who is CBI’s DIG, in his separate plea challenging his transfer to Nagpur. “Yesterday, we had refused the mentioning (seeking urgent listing of Sinha’s plea) and we had expressed that highest degree of confidentiality was to be maintained. But here is a litigant who mentions it before us and then goes out to distribute the petition to everyone,” a miffed CJI said. “Our efforts to maintain the respect of this institution are not shared by these people. They are giving it to everybody,” he added.

Bihar ex-Minister surrenders; sent to judicial custody

Patna, Nov 20 (IANS): Former Bihar Minister Manju Verma, who had been absconding for nearly three months in an arms case related to the Muzaffarpur shelter home horror, surrendered at a court on Tuesday. She has been sent to 14 days’ judicial custody. Manju Verma surrendered in the Manjhaul subdivision court of Begusarai district after a lower court and the Patna High Court rejected her interim bail petition. The Supreme Court had slammed Bihar Police for its failure to arrest her. According to the police, Manju Verma covered her face while reaching the court and fainted twice in the court room. “After her surrender, the court has sent her to 14 days’ judicial custody till December 1. She has been lodged in Begusarai jail,” a district police official said. Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Police Headquarters, S.K. WB forms panel to check spitting, littering Kolkata, Nov 20 (PTI): The West Bengal government is planning to put in place stricter measures to check unabated spitting and littering at public places, Urban Development minister Firhad Hakim said Tuesday. On the advice of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the government formed a committee, which would modify the existing laws and look into options of imposing stricter penalties on offenders, the minister told reporters at the secretariat. “We have seen people, knowingly or unknowingly, polluting public places by spitting here and there and throwing trash. We are spending lakhs to keep the city clean, paint the walls and its bridges. It’s time we raise awareness of common people, too, to stop this nuisance,” he said. According to Hakim, the committee, headed by Chief Secretary Malay De, would also include Home Secretary Atri Bhattacharya, Director General Virendra and Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar among others. A senior official at the secretariat said the West Bengal Prevention of Spitting in Public Place Act, introduced in 2003, provides for a fine of Rs 200.

Owaisi alleges Congress candidate offered bribe

Asaduddin Owaisi (File)

Hyderabad, Nov 20 (IANS): MIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday alleged that a candidate of the Congress offered Rs 25 lakh to cancel an election rally in Telangana’s Nirmal constituency. The Hyderabad MP told a public meeting in Nirmal town Monday night that he has audio recording to prove his claim. The party on Tuesday released an audio of the purported telephonic conversation between Congress candidate from Mudhole constituency Rama Rao Pawar and MIM leader Jaber Ahmed, who is also municipal chairman of Bhainsa town. Pawan, on behalf of Maheshwar Reddy, offered Rs 25 lakh to stop the MIM meeting. However, Jaber Ahmed refused to accept the offer. He made it clear that

even if Rs 50 lakh was offered, he can’t do anything. The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) President was addressing a meeting in Nirmal to campaign for his ally, the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), for next month’s Assembly elections. Owaisi came down heavily on Congress and BJP, describing them as two sides of the same coin. The elections to 119-member Assembly are scheduled to be held on December 7. MIM is contesting eight seats -- all in Hyderabad. These include seven seats it held in the dissolved Assembly. Though MIM has no formal alliance with TRS, they are friendly parties. MIM is backing TRS in all the constituencies except eighth where it has fielded its candidate.

Rijiju asks states to work together during disasters

New Delhi, Nov 20 (PTI): Union Minister Kiren Rijiju Tuesday asked the states to shed their differences while dealing with disasters and asked them to allocate more funds for disaster management. Addressing a workshop on ‘Role of Media in Disaster Management’, Rijiju said India is prone to natural disasters which calls for greater responsibilities and role to be played by everyone. The issue of lack of coordination during disaster should be addressed and states should give priority and allocate adequate funds for disaster management, he said. The Union Minister of State for Home said there was a need to look at disaster management in a more professional manner. Rijiju said there are three aspects to tackle any disaster -- pre, during and post disaster. The reaction is mainly focussed on the disaster aspect, while the focus should be on the first aspect, pre-disaster phase, and preventive steps should be taken to mitigate the effects of disasters, he said. The minister said the Home Ministry has always responded to the needs arising out of disasters.

Naidu, Mamata assert Opposition is united Ko l k ata , N ov 1 9 (PTI): Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee asserted on Monday that all parties opposing the BJP would chalk out a strategy to intensify the momentum “to protect the nation”. Naidu, who met Banerjee here days after their governments withdrew the ‘general consent’ to the CBI to conduct probe and raids in their states, told reporters that the November 22 conclave of opposition parties which was to be held in Delhi has been postponed due to ongoing assembly elections and a fresh date for the meeting will be announced soon. Naidu justified the decision, saying, “It is our discretion and that is our state right and we have taken it.” On Union minister Arun Jaitley’s attack on him and Banerjee that those who had a lot to hide would fear the central agency, he said, “I want to answer all these at an appropriate time. As it is in the Supreme Court I do not want to answer it.” The two leaders, were, however evasive on who will be the face of the pro-

posed anti-BJP front, with Naidu quipping that “compared to Narendra Modi ji, we all are seniors”, while Banerjee said “all are the face of the coalition”. Flanked by Banerjee, Naidu attacked the NDA government at the Centre, alleging institutions like the CBI, ED, Income Tax, RBI and CAG are under “severe pressure”. “We have the responsibility to save the nation, save the democracy, protect institutions... Democracy is in danger,” he said. “We wanted to meet on November 22 earlier (but) because of the elections... We wanted to make it before the Parliament (winter) session. “Those who are opposing the BJP will join

and discuss. We will chalk out a programme to move forward, take this momentum further on the agenda to protect the nation,” the Telugu Desam Party chief said after emerging from an hour-long meeting with Banerjee. The Winter Session of Parliament would be held from December 11 to January 8. The fresh date for the non-BJP parties conclave will be announced very soon, Naidu told reporters He described demonetisation as “a big farce” and alleged there was “intolerance towards minorities”. “Demonetisation has become a big farce. Regular growth has been stagnant and price of petrol and diesel is also increasing,”

he alleged. Naidu alleged even the politicians were “under threat” and being victimised. “Because of all these things we have to protect this great nation,” he said. Naidu, whose party TDP had quit the NDA over the issue of special category status to Andhra Pradesh, confirmed that he would attend a mega meeting organised by the TMC with opposition parties meeting on January 19. “We are in touch with Mayawati ji and also with everybody. Those who are opposing the BJP, those who want to save the nation we will work together. That’s our mission,” Naidu said referring to the Bahuhjan Samaj Party (BSP) chief. The TMC chief said, “This is not for the first time that we have discussed the country’s interests. Earlier also, we talked about many things. when with Arvind Kejriwal there was a problem, (we) had gone and discussed in detail about our future (course of) action. “We are totally together, we are working together, we are speaking together. We all are together against the BJP government to save the nation,” she said.

4 killed in Chicago shooting C h i c ag o, N ov 2 0 (IANS): Four people have died in a shooting at a Chicago hospital, including two female members of staff, a police officer and the gunman himself, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said. The incident comes just days after some US medical professionals became involved in an online campaign protesting against gun violence. Two women killed were a doctor and a pharmaceutical assistant, the Mayor confirmed. A police spokesman said the gunman had died in an exchange of shots, but it was not clear if he took his own life. A second officer avoided injury after a bullet fired in his direction became lodged in his gun, police said. The gunman appeared to target a woman he was in a relationship with, but they do not suggest a motive, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson said. The deceased officer was identified as Samuel Jimenez. The incident occurred at Chicago’s Mercy Hospital at about 3 p.m. as “multiple shots” were fired after the gunman opened fire in the hospital’s car park, a police spokesman said.

Police secure the area around Mercy Hospital where multiple people were shot, including a Chicago police officer.

Patients at the clinic later described hearing gunfire as the suspect made his way into the building, the CNN report said. The officer who was shot at but escaped injury during the incident shared images of a bullet embedded in the side of his gun, Chicago news broadcaster ABC7 reported. The other officer who succumbed to his injuries was a father of three. He joined the force in February 2017 and had recently

completed probationary training and became a fullfledged officer, Johnson said. “What I would ask is that you keep all the victims of today’s horrific incident in your thoughts and prayers,” Johnson said. “It is the face and the consequence of evil,” Emanuel said. Just days back a hashtag #ThisIsOurLane was used by doctors in response to a tweet from America’s powerful progun group, the National

Rifle Association (NRA), that suggested anti-gun doctors should “stay in their lane” after high-profile shootings. Some doctors rebuked the assertion -- sharing emotional stories and blood -- splattered photographs of their treatment of gun violence victims. Almost 13,000 people have been killed by guns so far in 2018 in the US, according to data compiled tracking website Gun Violence Archive.

40 killed in suicide attack on Kabul Kabul, Nov 20 (AFP): At least 40 people were killed in a suicide bomb attack on a meeting of top clerics in Kabul on Tuesday, officials said, in one of the deadliest attacks to strike the Afghan capital in months. It follows a wave of violence across war-torn Afghanistan in recent weeks that has killed hundreds of people as militants step up attacks. Another 60 people were wounded in the blast, health ministry spokesman Wahid Majroh said, which targeted a gathering of religious leaders, including members of the Ulema Council, at a wedding hall to mark the Prophet Mohammad’s birthday. “The suicide bomber detonated himself inside the hall during a ceremony by religious schola,” Kabul police spokesman Basir Mujahid said, confirming the casualty toll. Interior ministry spokesman Najib Danish said the number of dead or wounded was “more than 50” so far. A manager of Uranus Wedding Palace, which also hosts political and religious functions, told AFP a suicide bomber blew himself up in the middle of the gathering of religious scholars. “There are a lot of casualties -- I myself have counted 30 casualties,” he told AFP on the condition of anonymity.

China develops small multi-rotor UAV

BEIJING, Nov 20 (Agencies): China has developed X-M20 “Crane”, a smallsize multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which can climb up to 5,000 meters, said the China Helicopter Research and Development Institute (CHRDI) Tuesday. The electricity-powered small UAV features distinctive pitch control technique, which makes it unique in the UAV market, said CHRDI, China’s leading helicopter research organ of Avicopter under the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC). X-M20, with the weight only 20 kilograms, is designed to have a service ceiling up to 5,000 meters and wind resistance capacity up to seven level. As to the outstanding endurance capacity, the small UAV can fly about one hour with its maximum payload of five kilometers. Typically, the multi-ro-

tor aerial vehicle in the market is controlled by changing the rotating speed, while the X-M20 adopts pitch rotor control technique. X-M20 is controlled by changing the angle of rotors, thus the small UAV is endowed with higher efficiency, flexibility and windresistance capacities, CHRDI said. It is configured with high-performance blades, which reduces its power consumption and noise level and makes it more capable of long-endurance flight. The small multi-rotor UAV could be used in multiple missions such as border patrol, anti-terrorism, line patrol, geographical surveys and traffic monitoring. China has become a major player in the global helicopter market. Avicopter has mastered more than 50 models in 12 series of helicopters, making it among the world’s seven leading helicopter manufacturers.

US may list Venezuela as terrorism sponsor WASHINGTON, Nov 20 (Agencies): The United States is considering adding Venezuela to its list of state sponsors of terrorism but no final decision has been made, a person familiar with the deliberations said on Monday. Adding Venezuela to the list could limit U.S. economic assistance and impose financial restrictions on a country already suffering from hyperinflation, mass migration and shortages of food and medicine. Discussions on the issue have moved forward in recent days with strong lobbying from Republican Senator Marco Rubio, who has long pressed the administration to take a tougher stand against the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, the source said. A time frame for a decision on whether to add Venezuela to the terrorism list had not yet been determined, the source said. A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said it would be a challenge for the Trump administration to provide concrete proof linking the Maduro government to terrorism if it decides to put Venezuela on the list. The four countries currently on the list are North Korea, Iran, Sudan and Syria.

Cairo is mediating among the Palestinian factions to reach a permanent reconciliation and also between these groups and Israel, with UN support, to achieve a lasting cease-fire. Meanwhile, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley agreed with Mladenov on the need for both sides to commit to the peace process, although she called attention to the alleged destabilizing role played by Iran in the region, as well as in Israel and the Palestinian territories. In addition, Haley especially blamed Hamas, saying that only one party is attacking indiscriminately and targeting civilians, while Israel is focusing on military targets only.

Stan Lee’s company slams Bill Maher S tan Lees company POW! Enter tainment posted an open letter slamming Bill Mahers response to the comic book legends death. The company posted the letter on Monday in response to a blog post written by Maher that chided the Marvel icon after he died on November 12, reports variety.com. Maher’s initial blog post criticised American adults for taking comic books seriously and questioned the validity of Lee’s legacy. In response, Lee’s company wrote: “Mr. Maher: Comic books, like all literature, are storytelling devices. When written well by great creators such as Stan Lee, they make us feel, make us think and teach us lessons that hopefully make us better human beings. “One lesson Stan taught so many of us was tolerance and respect, and thanks to that message, we are grateful that we can say you have a right to your opinion that comics are childish and unsophisticated. Many said the same about Dickens, Steinbeck, Melville and

Stan Lee

even Shakespeare.” The letter also calls Maher’s statements “disgusting”, before emphasising the importance of Lee’s work in providing hope for readers who have felt different or have been bullied. “But to say that Stan merely inspired people to ‘watch a movie’ is in our opinion frankly disgusting,” the letter read. “Countless people can attest to how Stan inspired them to read, taught them that the world is not made up of absolutes, that heroes can have flaws and even villains can show humanity within

their souls. He gave us the X-Men, Black Panther, Spider-Man and many other heroes and stories that offered hope to those who felt different and bullied while inspiring countless to be creative and dream of great things to come.” Maher, the host of HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher,” wrote about the recent death of Lee on his blog. Lee died earlier this month at age 95. He was the mastermind behind superheroes such as Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and The Incredible Hulk. Maher wrote that Lee inspired millions

to “watch a movie.” His comments were immediately criticized by Lee’s fans. “The guy who created Spider-Man and the Hulk has died, and America is in mourning. Deep, deep mourning for a man who inspired millions to, I don’t know, watch a movie, I guess,” he wrote. Maher continued, saying adults “pretended comic books were actually sophisticated literature.” “And because America has over 4,500 colleges – which means we need more professors than we have smart people – some dumb people got to be professors by writing theses with titles like Otherness and Heterodoxy in the Silver Surfer,” Maher wrote. “And now when adults are forced to do grown-up things like buy auto insurance, they call it ‘adulting,’ and act like it’s some giant struggle.” The 62-year-old comedian concluded the post stating, “I don’t think it’s a huge stretch to suggest that Donald Trump could only get elected in a country that thinks comic books are important.” (IANS)

ewlyweds Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh on Tuesday treated fans to a few glimpses of their wedding celebrations, which was held at the picturesque Lake Como in Italy last week. From haldi to mehendi and the wedding nuptials, Deepika and Ranveer, who kept their wedding images away from the public eye, finally took to social media on Tuesday to share some of their special moments with their fans. In several images the star couple, who are fondly called “DeepVeer” by fans, were seen enjoying joyful moments from the celebrations. Be it sitting with her mehendi (henna), dancing with Ranveer or walking towards the mandap, Deepika looked every inch regal in ensembles by Sabyasachi Mukherjee. Ranveer during the mehendi celebrations looked dapper in a light pink and red Angarkha paired beautifully with a maroon Bundi with Zardozi work. The “Piku” actress

chose to colour coordinate with Ranveer and sported a light pink coloured lehenga with elaborate jewellery. Deepika looked resplendent on both wedding traditions -- Konkani and Anand Karaj. The couple’s ensembles were rooted in tradition as they chose hues of reds, whites, pinks and gold as their primary colours. For the North Indian style wedding, Deepika’s head was covered with an ornate dupatta with the words ‘Sada Saubhagyavati Bhavah’ embroidered on it, while Ranveer matched up in a colour co-ordinated sherwani.

Ranveer wore pristine white for the Konkani wedding, which marked the culmination of a six yearlong love story that began on the sets of the 2013 film “Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela”. The two also shared a beautiful moment from one of their ceremonies, where Deepika can be seen offering sweets to Ranveer. The star couple tied the knot on November 14 and 15. “The Jungle Book” tells the story of an Indian boy named Mowgli, wandering in an enchanting Indian forest with an entourage of his animal friends and fighting for survival. Mowgli’s adventures have made way for several adaptations like the popular eponymous 1967 animated film or Jon Favreau’s similarly titled re-imagination. David Warner

Brisbane, Nov 20 (PTI): Steve Smith and David Warner will not be available for Australia’s upcoming Test series against India after the yearlong ball-tampering bans on them were upheld by Cricket Australia on Tuesday after a review. In recent days, owing in no small measure to the Australian team’s poor onfield performances, there was a clamour for the bans to be reduced, which might have made them available for the four-Test series against India starting December 6 in Adelaide.

It would have allowed the two players, as well as batsman Cameron Bancroft, who was given a nine-month ban, to return to competitive cricket earlier than stipulated. “The Cricket Australia Board has carefully considered all elements of the ACA submission and has determined that it is not appropriate to make any changes to the sanctions handed down to the three players,” interim chairman Earl Eddings said in a statement. The Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA)

even made a submission favouring a reduction in the bans, to which Cricket Australia responded in negative. The Australian Cricketers’ Association asked for a rethink on the suspension of the trio following the Longstaff review. The ACA said that the review provided new and compelling evidence that CA - and not just the players involved - contributed to the atmosphere that prompted the events of the Cape Town Test in March. With India set to play Australia in a long series, including four-Tests and considering the hosts’ recent run of losses, there were prompt calls to bring back Smith and Warner before the contests against the visitors. The series gets underway with the first T20 International here on Wednesday. Smith and Warner are eight months into their one-year bans, while Bancroft will be eligible to return in December.

Farah to compete in 2019 London Marathon

L o n d o n, N ov 2 0 (Agencies): Four-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Mo Farah will compete in the London Marathon next year as he looks to win the race for the first time. Farah finished third in this year’s event in London but has since won his first major marathon title by claiming victory in Chicago in a European record time. And the 35-year-old, who has previously declared his intention to target the marathon at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, is hoping to continue his progress on the streets of the capital on Sunday, April 28. “I’m delighted to confirm I’ll be returning to race the Virgin Money London Marathon again next year,” he said. “I’ve often said how racing in London is very special to me and the London Marathon gives me the chance to run in front of my fans, on my home roads, where the atmosphere is like nothing else. I feel I have made great strides in the past year, finishing third in London in April and winning my first major marathon in Chicago in October.” “That and breaking both the British and European records has given me the confidence that I can compete against the best marathon runners in the world. London always puts together a world-class field and I expect that will be exactly the same in 2019 and I can’t wait for the challenge,” added Farah.

I-League: Mohun Bagan beat Real Kashmir FC 1-0

Srinagar, Nov 20 (Agencies): Dipanda Dicka scored the only goal as Mohun Bagan edged Real Kashmir 1-0 in a thrilling encounter at the TRC Polo ground on Tuesday. The victory helped the Green and Maroons climb to second in the table on eight points from four matches. They are five behind table leaders Chennai City, who have played a game more. On the other, Real Kashmir after a bright start – they beat the defending champions Minerva Punjab 1-0 in their first ever top-flight match and held Churchill Brothers to goalless draw in their next – are now eighth in the 11-team table with just four points from the equal number of matches. Winless in their first two home games, Kashmir started well as striker Gnohere Krizo almost scored

in the opening minute after skidding past debutant Dalraj Singh but Bagan goalkeeper Shilton Paul was at hand to avert the danger. Bagan were lucky not to concede a penalty in the 30th minute when Nagen Tamang was brought down inside the box by Abhishek Ambedkar but referee waived away the home team’s demands. But the best chance to score in the first half fell to Dicka when a lovely through ball from Pintu Mahata was laid into his path by Omar Elhusseiny. But despite having plenty of space to score, the Cameroonian striker sent in a low cross for Henry Kisekka, which was intercepted by Kashmir goalkeeper Bilal Khan. Dicka eventually

made most of the missed opportunity in the 70th minute heading home a Kisekka cross to put Bagan ahead. On a splendid run in the left flank, Kisekka found an unmarked Dicka inside the box after beating Kashmir center-back Mason Robertson for pace, which the Bagan no.9 netted without any fuss. Kashmir coach Dave Robertson immediately threw on Farhan Ganie and Nadong Bhutia in search of the equaliser, but Bagan’s defence held on to secure their second consecutive victory in four matches. The first two had ended in draws. Meanwhile, with three more back-to-back matches at home, Kashmir will be eager to turn their campaign around.

soon after coming on in the second half, from a Boyle assist. With the result secure, it was all about Cahill as he came on in a pre-arranged farewell in front of his home fans in Sydney. Widely considered as the “Greatest Socceroo”, he couldn’t add to his goalscoring tally but was given a huge ovation and handed the captain’s armband. “It’s the first time I’ve cried on a football field and I’m proud of it,” he said after the final whistle, wiping away tears. “ E ve r y t i m e I ’ve pulled on the green and gold, I’ve played with my heart. Thank you, Australia. To all my teammates and the staff I have worked

with, I would be nothing without you.” The 38-year-old, whose career was characterised by an indefatigable work rate and huge determination, last played for the Socceroos when he came off the bench for their final group game against Peru at the World Cup. His retur n to say goodbye was similar to fellow international retiree and former Everton star Wayne Rooney’s somewhat controversial farewell last week. While Rooney played more than half an hour for his 120th and last England cap in a friendly against the United States, Cahill was restricted to a bit part by Arnold, conscious that it was Australia’s last tune-up before the Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Born in Sydney to a Samoan mother, Cahill started his international career playing for the Western Samoa under-20s and only became a Socceroo in 2004 after an intense lobbying campaign to world body FIFA. Two years later in Germany, he became the first Australian to net a goal at the World Cup, going on to score in the 2010 and 2014 tournaments as well. Cahill spent 14 years in England with Millwall and Premier League outfit Everton, scoring more than 100 goals, before stints in the United States and China. He now plies his trade in the Indian Super League.

S y d n e y, N o v 2 0 (Agencies): Veteran Tim Cahill bid an emotional farewell Tuesday on his 108th and final appearance for Australia as Scottish striker Martin Boyle scored twice for his newly-adopted country. Cahill, the Socceroos all-time top scorer with 50 goals, came out of international retirement to play the final nine minutes of Australia’s 3-0 win against Lebanon in their last match before defending the Asian Cup crown in January. L o n d o n, N ov 2 0 (Agencies): Gareth Southgate says the only way for England to build on their impressive journey to the World Cup semi-finals was to add new players to the squad. Following their campaign in Russia, Southgate has added the likes of Joe Gomez, Ben Chilwell and Jadon Sancho to further reduce the average age of his squad. Experienced players such as Gary Cahill, Jamie Vardy and Ashley Young have either retired or been left out of the squad, but their presence has not been missed as England have secured their place in the inaugural Nations League semi-finals. Asked about his decision to freshen up an already successful squad, Southgate said: “One of the most important things we can do is be right on the button with every player who is playing, how they are progressing and where they might fit in with what we are doing.” “Whenever I see teams that win the league, the only way they can really start that challenge again is to add a couple of new players.” “So, whenever we bring a new player in, that player is excited by it, but the other players also want to prove themselves to that player. They know there is competition and the last four games everybody has played well.” England reached the Nations League semi-finals with a 2-1 victory over Croatia on Sunday, and their squad featured a number of players in their early 20s, as well as 18-year-old Sancho. Southgate is keen for his young players to embrace the opportunity to play for their country, rather than be inhibited by the pressure, saying, “We want them to enjoy wearing the shirt. Any time you go in the dressing room or walking around the hotel - last night it was like a youth club - you can hear them laughing and joking and having fun.”

WOMEN’S WORLD BOXING CHAMPIONSHIP

‘Magnificent Mary’ assured of 7th medal

New Delhi, Nov 20 (PTI): The legendary M C Mary Kom Tuesday assured herself a seventh medal at the Women’s World Boxing Championship to become the most successful pugilist in the event’s history, while debutant Lovlina Borgohain was also guaranteed a podium finish here. Mary Kom, a motherof-three, defeated China’s Wu Yu 5-0 in the light flyweight (48kg) category quarterfinals to enter the semis and be assured of at least a bronze. Joining the 35-yearold Manipuri in the lastfour stage was debutant Borgohain (69kg), an Asian Championships bronzemedallist last year. The 21-year-old from Assam claimed a 5-0 verdict over Scott Kaye Frances of Australia. Borgohain won a gold at the inaugural India Open earlier this year. Mary Kom entered the event with a remarkable tally of five gold medals and a silver to her credit. She last won a world championship medal in 2010 - a 48kg category gold. “It was a tough bout. Not very tough but not very easy also. There are a lot of good Chinese boxers who keep coming. I have faced a lot of them but this opponent, I have not faced earlier,” the diminutive star said after her bout. “But once I got her game I thought out what to do and I did not have much of a problem after that,” she added.

The Olympic bronzemedallist next faces North Korea’s Kim Hyang Mi in the semi-final on Thursday. The Indian had beaten her in the Asian Championships last year. “So, I am confident of winning but not overconfident,” she added. In a bout which saw little action, Mary Kom was the better boxer with clean punches. More importantly, the local favourite rarely allowed Wu to get a clean shot at her. The five judges ruled in her favour with the elaborate scoreline reading 30-27, 2928, 30-27, 29-28, 30-27. Mary Kom was tied with Irish legend Katie Taylor on the number of medals won before this

edition. But with Tuesday’s win, the Manipuri became the most successful boxer in the marquee tournament. Taylor now plies her trade in the professional circuit. Borgohain, who hails from Assam, produced a dominating performance to beat her Australian opponent, who won the 81kg category silver in the 2016 edition. Scott also won a bronze in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games earlier this year. “It was a tough fight but I think I handled my opponent well. I am happy to be assured of a medal in my first World Championships,” she said. Borgohain next faces Chen Nien-Chin

of Taipei in the semifinals on Thursday. However, two other Indians, Manisha Maun (54kg) and Bhagyabati Kachari (81kg), lost their respective quarterfinal bouts to bow out of the tournament. Manisha lost to top seed Stoyka Petrova of Bulgaria in a split 4-1 decision. Kachari lost 2-3 to Jessica Sinisterra of Columbia. She was leading in the first round but the Columbian fought back to do better in the next two. “It was a tough fight. I won the first round. She was spraying her punches and also pulling and pushing. I think I could not control her,” said the 26year-old from Assam.

Former gold-medallist Stanimira Petrova had her world championship accreditation revoked by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) on Tuesday after the world body ruled that her allegation of corruption by judges was not backed by evidence. The Bulgarian, a 54kg gold-medallist in the 2014 edition, accused the judges of corruption after losing her 57kg world championship pre-quarterfinal bout to India’s Sonia Chahal here on Monday. In a statement issued Tuesday, the AIBA said that by her conduct, Petrova has disrespected her opponent, the judges, the referee, the event organisers and the world body itself. It said the incident will also be forwarded to AIBA Disciplinary Commission for a review. “ M s. Pe t r ova h a s made false and misleading statements regarding the AIBA officials. So, AIBA has decided to extend the removal of the accreditation to the Bulgarian boxer Stanimira Petrova (57kg) due to her unacceptable and unsportsmanlike conduct,” AIBA Executive Director Tom Virgets said. “She has shown inappropriate behaviour at the conclusion of her event. Her actions are reflective of her coach who disrespects and tries to damage the credibility of the sport,” he added.

‘Mayweather wants to fight me’ Las Vegas, Nov 20 (Agencies): Manny Pacquiao says he has spoken with Floyd Mayweather about a possible sequel to their 2015 superfight, but said no decision would be taken on a rematch until the New Year. Speaking in New York to confirm details of his January 19 fight against Adrien Broner, Pacquiao said he had discussed a rematch with Mayweather during a recent trip to Japan. “When I met up with Floyd in Japan, we talked and he said he wants to come out of retirement to challenge me,” Pacquiao said. “All I know is fighting in the ring and entertaining people. That’s my job. Floyd has come out of retirement and we’ll see after this fight.” Mayweather scored a unanimous victory over Pacquiao in 2015’s ‘Fight of the Century’, which was largely regarded as a let-down despite being the highest-grossing fight of all time. Since then, speculation about a possible rematch between the two welterweights has flickered, with Mayweather saying in September he was ready to fight Pacquiao. “I’m coming back to fight Manny Pacquiao this year another 9 figure

payday on the way,” Mayweather wrote on Instagram. Pacquiao, who will be fighting in the United States for the first time in two years in January’s bout, said Monday he remained solely focused on Broner before any return with Mayweather. “We cannot underestimate Broner and this fight,” Pacquiao said. “We

will discuss anything with Floyd Mayweather after that.” Pacquiao, 39, will face Broner at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Pacquiao, 60-7 with two drawn and 39 knockouts in a career that began in 1995, turns 40 in December while American Broner is 33-3 with one drawn and 24 knockouts.

Kante open to recordbreaking Chelsea contract

grew up. Kante is also not interested in a move to a rival Premier League club, with the only option other than a Chelsea renewal being a move to one of Spain’s two biggest clubs - Barcelona or Real Madrid. Barcelona are keeping a close eye on developments around the World Cupwinning midfielder, but they have yet to make any serious approach to Chelsea or Kante’s representatives. Kante, whose current £150,000-a-week deal expires in 2021, is one of

Chelsea’s biggest contract renewal priorities, along with team-mate Eden Hazard. And, while a new deal for Kante would see him become Chelsea’s best-paid player, it could be immediately blown out of the water by a new contract for Hazard, which could break the £300,000-a-week barrier. Maurizio Sarri is understood to be happy with Kante’s contribution, despite his need to adapt to a more attacking role this season, but other midfielders could be set for a January move.

L o nd o n , N o v 2 0 (Agencies): N’Golo Kante has signalled his openness to renewing his contract, with Chelsea hoping to tie the midfielder down to a new record-breaking £290,000-a-week deal, according to Goal. Chelsea are keen to ward off potential suitors by rewarding the France international with a five-year contract that would be the biggest in the club’s history. The 27-year-old is happy at Stamford Bridge and has enjoyed the platform that English football has given him ever since he moved to Leicester City from Caen in 2015. Having helped Leicester to a surprise Premier League title in his debut season, he joined Chelsea a year later and repeated the feat under then-manager Antonio Conte. His consistency and influence has seen a host of clubs show an interest in him, most notably Paris Saint-Germain, but Kante has little interest in moving back to the city where he
