PDP, Cong and NC in talks to Won’t contest next LS polls: Sushma form J&K govt to checkmate BJP INDORE, NOV 20 (PTI):

SRINAGAR, NOV 20 ( AG E N C I O E S ) : P D P, Congress and the National Conference are in talks to form a popular government in Jammu and Kashmir to frustrate the BJP’s efforts to poach legislators from Mehbooba Mufti’s PDP party and prop up a government headed by Sajjad Lone’s People Conference, sources have said. The coalition talks hold the potential to trigger farreaching realignment of political forces in Jammu and Kashmir and envisages an alliance between PDP and Congress, which have been partners in a government between 2002 and 2007, backed from outside by the National Conference, PTI reported. PDP has 28 MLAs, followed by NC with 15 and Congress with 12 which will take them well clear of the majority mark of 44. The National Conference, sources said, have made it clear that they were not interested in joining a coalition government but would not be averse to giving outside support to a PDP-Congress coalition. If such an arrangement

comes about, Mehbooba Mufti is unlikely to be the chief minister but the government may be headed by a senior PDP leader. The state is currently under governor’s rule which cannot be extended after it completes its six-month period on December 19. It is proposed to impose President’s rule thereafter but the 87-member assembly is not being dissolved, according to Governor Satyapal Mallik. A popular government headed by the PDP’s Mehbooba Mufti fell when its partner BJP pulled out of the ruling coalition on June 16. Political circles have been agog with speculation that behind the scene efforts were underway to prop up a government headed by Sajjad Lone’s People Conference, which has only two MLAs but which would be banking on support by the 25 MLAs of BJP. However, this combination would fall short of the required majority of 44 which is sought to be made by splitting the PDP which has been rocked by dissidence.

Senior BJP leader and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj announced Tuesday that she will not contest the next Lok Sabha polls due to health reasons. The 66-year-old leader, who is serving her fourth term in the House, told reporters “It is the party which decides, but I have made up my mind not to contest the next (Lok Sabha) elections due to health reasons.” A spell-binding orator in Hindi, Swaraj is among the few top politicians capable of speaking in English with equal ease and has had a few rare distinctions including being the youngest cabinet minister at 25 when she joined the Haryana government in 1977 and the first woman chief minister of Delhi. She is also the first woman external affairs minister of the country. Indira Gandhi, though, as prime minister had held the portfolio. Swaraj has also served in Rajya Sabha for three terms and was a member of Haryana assembly. She started her political life with ABVP, the RSS’ student wing, and later joined the BJP.

Pastors pained at NLA expected to go paperless NNPGs collecting taxes DIMAPUR, NOV 20 (NPN): Dimapur Area Ao Baptist Pastors Fellowship (DAAPBF) has expressed aghast and pain at Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) allegedly collecting taxes even from church construction activities. Citing an instance, DAAPBF stated that Aoyim Baptist Church started its new church building construction with a dedicatory service on October 9, 2017. It alleged that soon after construction started, different NNPGs started levying taxes on non-local skilled workers, which ultimately added up to the total cost of the construction. According to the fellowship, the church members had painstakingly collected offerings and tithes for several years to construct the new church building. On the lookout, non-local workers were hired for construction works due to non-availability of local workers, on whom taxes were now being imposed, it added. Having learnt of the matter, DAAPBF said it called an emergency meeting and discussed the serious issue at length and declared that it was convinced that such taxes even from construction of the house of God was against Christian testimony and biblical teaching. Therefore, such practices were detestable and should be refrained, it added.

Secularism taking a different direction: NBA prez 3 nabbed on kidnapping charges Staff Reporter

D I M A P U R , N OV 2 0 (NPN): Expressing concern over alleged curtailment of religious freedom of minority communities, Nagaland Bar Association (NBA) president Talitsungba pointed out that secularism had taken a different direction today. He also accused the state of being a “mere spectator” and alleged that it had “escaped scot free” despite its indifference. Recalling the days when Christians in other parts of the country could propagate their faith openly, Talitsungba however lamented that in recent times people were reportedly being arrested on false charges of coercion, if they dared to preach openly. Speaking as a special guest at the introductory session of the eighth biennial general conference of

Talitsungba (NP)

Nagaland Law Students’ Federation (NLSF) here on Tuesday, Talitsungba touched upon various crucial social and economic issues the country was faced with today. The two-day conference is being held at Hotel Acacia. Stressing on curtailment of religious freedom in recent times, Talitsungba remarked, “In the context of Nagaland, we get to see so many enlightened views on various issues in newspapers, but nobody seems to be bothered about

the curtailment of religious rights.” On incidents of mob lynching due to consumption of beef in the last few years, Talitsungba said when a society considered cows more important than human lives, there were no adequate means to rein in the perpetrators. He also questioned how killing a person without trial could constitute justice. On demonetisation, he said silence on the part of head of economic institutions of the country was baffling. He demanded that legislations must be made to ensure a peaceful coexistence rather than harassment of the public and proposed a law whereby the laws concerning the economy were not made binding on the public. Talitsungba also spoke on what he termed was a

“new form of capitalism” practised by the government wherein any payment above Rs 2 lakh could not be made in cash, but electronically. He revealed the satellite connection rights for the payment process were obtained by private firms and the taxes on payment went to their coffers. Referring to the correlation between fundamental rights and duties, especially in comparison with other countries, the bar association chief also advocated that justice be dispensed in a benevolent manner. City Law College principal P Leonard Aier, who also spoke on the occasion, remarked that people were today living in a failed State, pointing out that one of the main reasons was judicial machinery that was not functioning in the manner it should.
