There were traffic snarls during the day at Delhi’s border with police checking vehicles coming in from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Metro services between Delhi and NCR areas were restricted. confrontation for a couple of hours in the morning. Police made announcements on loudspeakers asking the farmers assembled on the Punjab side to disperse. But as protesters tried to push through barricades, the Haryana Police used a water cannon and lobbed teargas shells. Apart from this confrontation in Ambala district, there were face-offs between the protesters and police in Haryana’s Sirsa, Kurukshetra, Fatehabad and Jind districts bordering Congress-run Punjab. Police had placed cement and steel barricades and parked trucks on the road to stop the farmers’ tractor-trolleys. But a few
hours later, at most borderpoints, the farmers were let through. By afternoon, several groups of protesters – from Punjab and Haryana – were travelling towards Delhi on tractor-trolleys. Police diverted private vehicles and long lines of trucks were parked on the road. Police used water cannons also against protesters trying to enter Kaithal district, and at Khanauri border where farmers were protesting under the banner of Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta-Ugarhan). Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury and Delhi Chief
Minister Arvind Kejriwal were among the opposition leaders who slammed the Haryana Police action at Shambhu. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and his Haryana counterpart Manohar Lal Khattar exchanged words over Twitter. Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal too criticised attempts to thwart the protest. Haryana Police said they acted with restraint and nobody was seriously hurt during the day. No farmer was arrested, they said. Farmer bodies said they will hold a dharna wherever they are stopped from moving towards the national capital. BKU (Ekta-

Meanwhile, Union agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar Thursday invited farmers for talks on December 3 to resolves differences. Appealing the farmers to not agitate, Tomar assured that the talk will have a positive outcome.

HC grants interim stay on dog meat ban Correspondent
KOHIMA, NOV 26 (NPN): Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench granted an interim stay against the State government notification banning commercial import and trade of dogs, dog markets and sale of dogs in the State. After considering the submissions made by the counsel on behalf of the petitioners and the government advocate, Justice S Hukato Swu passed the order on Thursday pursuant to the interim prayer made by the petitioners that the impugned order be stayed pending the disposal of the present writ petition. The court had on September 14 given opportunity to the respondents to file affidavit-in-opposition with the direction that interim would be considered thereafter. However, the government advocate submitted that there was no response from the State respondents. The court in the meantime ordered the State respondents to make all efforts to file their affidavit-in-reply and further listed the matter after winter vacation. Counsel for the peti-

tioners argued that if an executive exercise was made violating the fundamental rights of the citizens, the executive court orders could not stand the test of law. The counsel pointed out that orders to be implemented must have statutory backing. The counsel further pleaded that the impugned order by the State government of July 4 July had been passed in the garb of cabinet decision, being basically an executive order and devoid of legislative backing, and was illegal. PM Modi pitches for ‘One Nation, One Election’ Postal services hit as KEVADIA (GUJ), NOV 26 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday advocated ‘One Nation, One Election’ system and a single voters’ list, saying that elections taking place every few months hinders development. Addressing the concluding session of the 80th All India Presiding Officers Conference here via video conference, Modi also paid homage to the victims of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, and asserted that India is fighting terrorism now with new policy and new process. O n N ove m b e r 2 6 , 2008, ten Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists from Pakistan killed 166 people, including 18 security personnel, in a 60-hour siege in Mumbai. Making a strong pitch for simultaneous elections on the Constitution Day, Modi said that `One Nation, One Election’ was not “just an issue of deliberation, but also the need of the coun-

try”. “Elections are held at different places every few months and it hampers the developmental work and all of you know it. Therefore, it is must to have deep study and deliberation on `One Nation, One Election’,” he said. He also said that having a single voters’ list was desirable. “Only one voters’ list should be used for Lok Sabha, Vidhan Sabha and other elections. Why are we wasting time and money on these lists?” he said. He also emphasized
the need for coordination between three wings of the state -- Legislature, Executive and Judiciary -- and said everything from these institutes’ roles to their decorum is described in the Constitution. “In the 1970s, we saw how there was an attempt to breach the dignity of separation of power, but the country got the answer only from the Constitution. After that period of Emergency, the system of checks and balances became stronger and stronger. “The Legislature, Executive and Judiciary, all three learned a lot from that period and moved forward,” the prime minister said. National interest should form the basis of every decision, Modi said. “We must remember that when politics take over people and nationfirst policies, the nation has to pay adversely in such situations,” he added. He cited the example
of delay in the completion of the Sardar Sarovar Dam, saying it kept lingering and was completed after years. “This could have happened earlier if development was given precedence. Those who stalled it, have no repentance,” he said in a clear attack on the Congress. Underlining that there is no place for politics of untouchability, Modi cited the example of the Statue of Unity built by his government for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel despite Patel not being from the BJP or the Jana Sangh. Constitution is our guiding light to take on challenges in the 21st century, Modi said and called for raising awareness about it. “Our Constitution has many features but one very special feature is the importance given to duties. Mahatma Gandhi was very keen about this. He saw a close link between rights and duties.

Congress bids adieu to Ahmed Patel and Tarun Gogoi BHARUCH (GUJ)/GUWAHATI, NOV 26 (PTI): The Congress on Thursday bid a final farewell to Ahmed Patel and Tarun Gogoi, two stalwarts who stood unflinchingly by the party through its many highs and lows over the decades and died of COVID-19 related complications within two days of each other. Patel, the Congress’ crisis manager and consensus builder, died on Wednesday at a Gurugram hospital and was laid to rest at his village Piraman in his home state Gujarat’s Bharuch district. Gogoi, a three-time Assam chief minister and an old Congress hand, passed away on Monday and was cremated in Guwahati. Patel was 71 and Gogoi 84. Hundreds of Congress leaders and workers showed up in Piraman and Guwahati to mourn the deaths of their two veterans. Both

leaders were staunch Gandhi family loyalists and their commitment to the party never wavered. Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi attended the funeral of Patel. Patel’s mortal remains reached Piraman from Vadodara on Wednesday night and were kept at Sardar Patel Hospital in Ankleshwar. He was buried at a Muslim cemetery in Piraman in the presence of locals and Congress leaders in the morning.
From the western state of Gujarat to the northeast of the country in Assam, another funeral was taking place, of equal significance to the Congress. Assam bid an emotional goodbye to the three-time chief minister, twice Union minister and six-time Lok Sabha MP. Gogoi’s final rites were performed with full state honours at the Nabagraha cremation ground amid the chanting of hymns, preceded by a gun salute and
band played by the Assam Police. His son Gaurav, also a Lok Sabha MP, performed the last rites. It was an emotional journey, rarely seen in Assam, with scores of admirers and onlookers stopping the flower-bedecked truck at several places, bowing their heads before the huge cutouts of Gogoi on the vehicle, and offering floral tributes. Men and women lined along the streets and stood
at rooftops right through the nearly 25-km procession route. The crowd thickened as the day advanced. Cutting across age groups, some people could be seen crying. Traditional drums and cymbals were played, and conch shells blown. Shops and commercial establishments at several places in Guwahati and other parts of the state pulled their shutters down as a mark of respect. The state government had announced a half-day holiday from 1 pm on Thursday. The cortege finally reached the Nabagraha crematorium at around 2 pm after a three-and-half-hour long procession, almost three hours later than its scheduled time. The loss of both Patel and Gogoi will be deeply felt in the grand old party and its leadership, said several party insiders.
up of all vacant posts etc. He said that despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the strike was called by the division as it was a genuine demand. Domeh said the strike could not have immediate impact, but additional burden may arise if they did not raise their voice. AIPEU-P-A Nagaland divisional secretary Shibu Das, AIPEU-P3 assistant divisional secretary Kevikhrielie Kirha and AIPEU-P4 member Abdul Bosbuyaih also spoke at the protest site. The postal service employees also paid tribute to two employees who lost their lives on duty. One of the staff died due to Covid-19. The employees demanded that compensation of Rs. 10 lakh be paid to the family of deceased without any delay. The demand also included appointment to one ward of the employees who died due to Covid-19.

The petition was filed by Neizevolie Kuotsu and two others of Middle Midlane Kohima; Abei Zatsu of T.Khel Kohima village and Ketounyuu of D.Khel Kohima village.

Mizoram aims to achieve self- Mixed response in north-east to sufficiency in meat & poultry nationwide trade union strike Aizawl, Nov 26 (PTI): The Mizoram Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department has launched a Rs 18.95 crore pilot project to achieve self-sufficiency in meat and poultry products. State Animal Husbandry and Veterinary minister Dr K Beichhua, who launched the pilot project under the state flagship programme Socio Economic Development Policy (SEDP) on Wednesday said it will benefit a total of 1,020 beneficiaries from eight districts. The minister said that Rs 548.65 lakh will be released as the first instalment to the beneficiaries for different trades to achieve self-sufficiency in meat and poultry products, which in turn will uplift the state economy in the near future. Beichhua, who is also chairman of AH&Vety, Fishery and Sericulture Board of SEDP, said that the state is far from meeting its requirement in meat and poultry products. He said that the government has banned the import of pigs and other meat products from neighbouring states and countries due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and to prevent the spread of swine flu like Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) and African Swine Fever (ASF) in the state. “The SEDP pilot project to achieve self suf-
ficiency in meat and poultry products was conceived as the state failed to meet its requirement,” he said. He expressed hope that the pilot project will benefit the beneficiaries so that they make good livings. According to Beichhua, the government is making massive efforts to usher in development despite the spread of novel coronavirus. Highlighting the achievement of AH& Vety department during two years of the present government, he said that seven veterinary dispensaries were upgraded to full fledged veterinary hospitals, 35 rural animal health centres to veterinary dispensaries and new buildings of veterinary hospitals are currently being constructed in seven districts. Besides, the government has also set up animal check gates in 10 villages near the inter-state and international border, and is currently constructing goat breeding farm, broiler poultry farm and intensive mithun stud farm in different parts of the state, he said. Speaking at the launch, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department director Hmarkunga said the pilot project would cover different trades - Piglet Multiplication Unit (PMU), Piggery Fattening Unit (PFU), Broiler farming and backyard poultry (Rainbow Rooster) farming.
G U WA H AT I / AG A R TALA, NOV 26 (IANS): The 24-hour nationwide trade union strike called on Thursday by ten central trade unions evoked a mixed response in the northeastern states. Banking operations across the northeastern region were hit as a majority of the bank employees joined the countrywide shutdown. According to officials, train and flight services in most northeastern states remained unaffected by the shutdown. In BJP ruled Assam, markets, shops and business establishments were open in many places and closed in some parts of the state specially in southern Assam. There were few vehicles on the roads. But many government offices functioned almost normally and schools and other educational institutions also remained open, though with less attendance. Trade union leader Biswajit Ghatak told the media in Guwahati that the shutdown is total and spontaneous in most parts of Assam except in Guwahati, where the strike was relaxed because of the funeral of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. In another BJP ruled state Tripura, shops and markets were closed in some places but were open in some sub-divisions with very few shoppers. Most private and passenger vehicles re-

Some hooligans attacked the headquarters of the Communist Party of India, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, Socialist Unity Centre of India in Agartala, and several offices of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and damaged the properties in different places of Tripura. “Ruling BJP supporters attacked the CITU office in Agartala and damaged the assets in the presence of the police,” CITU Tripura unit President and Former Minister Manik Dey told the media. After visiting the party offices, CPI-M politburo member and former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar told the media that the Bharatiya Janata Party led government at the centre was destroying the country and their workers were attacking the democratic movements and national party offices in Tripura. However, BJP leaders denied the accusations of the Left party. The 24hour nationwide shutdown
evoked very little response in other northeastern states including Meghalaya and BJP ruled Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. The strike was called by ten central trade unions including Congress backed Indian National Trade Union Congress and Left supported Centre of Indian Trade Unions to protest against various policies of the Central government. T h e p r o - B h a r a t i ya Janata Party trade union Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) however is opposing the shutdown. The trade unions have asked the Centre to provide 200 days’ work in a year at enhanced wages under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). The unions have also demanded withdrawal of anti-farmer and anti-worker labour codes, scrapping of the National Pension System (NPS), restoration of the earlier pension scheme with improvement in EPS-95.

Stop ‘inciting’ farmers: Khattar to Amarinder
Chandigarh, Nov 26 (PTI): Shortly after Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday hit out at the BJP-led Haryana government for stopping farmers en route to Delhi, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar sternly told him to stop “inciting innocent farmers”. Khattar asked Singh to desist from misleading farmers, pointing out to him that he has already pledged to quit politics if the Minimum Support Price mechanism is ever dismantled. “@Capt Amarinder Ji, I’ve said it earlier and I’m saying it again, I’ll leave politics if there’ll be any trouble on the MSP -- therefore, please stop inciting innocent farmers,” Khattar tweeted. Khattar also accused the Punjab CM of “only tweeting and running away from talks” with him for the last three days on the issue. “I’ve been trying to reach out to you for the last 3 days but, sadly, you have decided to stay unreachable -- is this how serious you are for farmers’ issues? You’re only tweeting and running away from talks, why?,”
‘Absolutely Wrong’ to stop farmers: Kejriwal
Members of various farmer organisations remove a barricade at Punjab-Haryana border in Ambala district. (PTI) Khattar said in another tweet. Launching a scathing attack on Singh, the senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader told him, “Time for your Lies, Deception and Propaganda is over -- let the people see your real face.” “Please stop putting the lives of people in danger during the Corona pandemic. I urge you not to play with the lives of the people – at least avoid cheap politics during the time of the pandemic,” Khattar told Singh. Earlier in the day, Am-

arinder Singh had lashed out at the BJP-led government in Haryana for stopping farmers from moving towards Delhi, saying the use of “brute force” against them is “totally undemocratic and unconstitutional” Haryana had earlier announced to completely seal its borders with Punjab to prevent farmers from entering the state for their ‘Delhi Chalo’ protest march against the Centre’s farm laws on November 26-27. “Why is @mlkhattar
govt in Haryana stopping the farmers from moving to Delhi? The tyrannical use of brute force against peacefully protesting farmers is totally undemocratic & unconstitutional,” said Singh in a tweet. He said farmers have been peacefully protesting in Punjab against the farm laws for two months. “Why is Haryana govt provoking them by resorting to force? Don’t the farmers have the right to pass peacefully through a public highway?”, Singh had asked.
It is absolutely wrong that farmers are being prevented from holding peaceful demonstrations against the Centre’s new farm laws and water cannons are being used on them, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said today. Haryana put up road barricades along its border with Punjab on Wednesday as farmers in the adjoining state massed with their tractor-trailers for their “Delhi Chalo” march to protest against the laws. Water cannons were used at least twice to disperse them and stop them from going to Delhi. Taking to Twitter, the Delhi Chief Minister said peaceful demonstration was a constitutional right of the farmers. “All the three farming bills of the central government are anti-farmer. Instead of withdrawing them, farmers are being prevented from holding peaceful demonstrations, water canons are being used on them. This is absolutely wrong. Peaceful demonstrations are their constitutional right,” he said in a tweet in Hindi.
26/11 anniversary: Youngest survivor waits for state govt to allot her a home M U M B AI , NOV 2 6 (AGENCIES): It’s been 12 years since the Mumbai terror attacks and Devika Rotawan, the youngest survivor and also a key witness who identified terrorist Mohammed Ajmal Kasab during the trial, is yet to find a home she can call her own. All she has got all these years are assurances from successive state governments, reports Hindustan Times. Rotawan, who has recently taken admission to BA in Chetana College, Bandra, and who wants to join the civil services eventually, was barely nine at the time of the attacks. During the attack at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, a bullet passed through her right thigh when two Laskar-eTaiba operatives from Pakistan opened indiscriminate fire on passengers and also hurled grenades. Rotawan, who was to travel with her parents to Pune to see, fell unconscious shortly after receiving the gunshot. She was taken to Saint Georges Hospital where she was operated upon six times over one-and-

She said several representatives of the central and state government have visited their room and have assured them of residential accommodation under economically weaker section quota but nothing came of it, forcing the now 21-yearold to move Bombay high court recently, stating that her family could no longer afford to pay rent of room in chawl at Subash Nagar in Bandra (East). In her petition, she claimed that government officials had also assured
her financial assistance for her education and medical treatment. A division bench of the court directed the Maharashtra government to consider Rotawan’s plea for a home but the family is yet to hear from the government. “I am glad we won in the high court but it has been over one month and we have not heard from the government,” said Rotawan who was her way to her native place in Pune with her father and elder brother. “In the first hearing itself, the high court passed the order for a flat for Rotawan,” said Utsav Bains, Rotawan’s lawyer.
FIR lodged against Lalu Prasad by Cyclone Nivar brings torrential rains to Andhra Pradesh Bihar BJP MLA who received his call
PATNA, NOV 26 (PTI): Rashtriya Janata Dals jailed president Lalu Prasad was slapped with a case here on Thursday by the BJP MLA whom he had allegedly called while in custody and offered a ministerial berth in exchange for helping the opposition in defeating the NDAs candidate for assembly Speakers post. In SPS Nellore district, which was the worst hit with rainfall as high as 30 cm, at least 3,363 people were shifted to 115 relief camps from vulnerable areas, district Collector Chakradhar Babu said. The Swar namukhi river in SPS Nellore district was in spate while the Somasila reservoir received an inflow of 65,000 cusecs. State Water Resources Minister P Anil Kumar visited some relief camps and spoke to the affected people. He later reviewed the situation with his department officials and directed them to ensure that there were no breaches to tanks.

Satyendra Jain New Delhi, Nov 26 (PTI): Schools in the national capital will not reopen till the government is convinced about students’ safety, Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain said on Thursday. Universities and schools across the country were closed on March 16, when the Centre announced a countrywide classroom shutdown as part of measures to contain the spread of COVID-19. A nationwide lockdown was imposed on March 25. “There is no plan to reopen schools (in Delhi) as of now. We are hopeful that a vaccine will be available soon. Schools will not be reopened till the time we are convinced that students will be safe,” Jain told reporters. Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had on Tuesday said reopening of schools is unlikely till a vaccine is available. While several restrictions have been eased in different ‘unlock’ phases, educational institutions continue to remain closed.
According to ‘Unlock 5’ guidelines, states can take a call on reopening schools in phases. Several states had begun the process of reopening schools. However, some of them announced closing of schools again due to rise in coronavirus cases. Earlier, school authorities were allowed to call students of class nine to 12 to school on voluntary basis from September 21. However, the Delhi government decided against it. Delhi recorded 5,246 fresh COVID-19 cases in a day as the positivity rate declined to 8.49 per cent on Wednesday, the lowest since October 28, while 99 more fatalities pushed the city’s death toll to 8,720. It was after five days that the national capital recorded single-day death below 100. The city had recorded its highest single-day spike of 8,593 cases on November 11. Authorities reported 98 deaths on November 19, 118 on November 20, 111 on November 21, 121 each on November 22 and 23, and 109 on November 24.

Double whammy for Congress
I
t was a double whammy for a beleaguered Congress when two of its veteran stalwarts – Tarun Gogoi and Ahmed Patel- passed away within a space of three days- at a time when the party needed them most. Both leaders were treasurers of the Congress and celebrated for their ability to retain their sanity amid wicked politics and keeping the grand old party well-coordinated with others. A former Union Minister, three-time chief minister of Assam and traditional Congressman, Gogoi died at the age of 86 on November 23. He was tested positive for COVID-19 on August 26 and hospitalised. He was discharged on October 26, after a 60-day hospitalisation. His condition worsened when he had difficulty breathing and was re-admitted to hospital on November 2. He died of post-COVID complications on November 23 after spending 20 days in the hospital. Gogoi was Assam’s longest-serving chief minister and sitting member of Assam assembly. He was associated with the field of politics for over 50 years in which he acquired various positions within the Congress party, central government as well as Assam’s state administration. He had also served six terms as a Member of parliament, Lok Sabha and had also served as an Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Food and Ministry of Food Processing Industries. His abiding political legacy was not just winning three successive Assembly elections (2001, 2006, 2011) for his party; it was also about bringing the State back from the spiral of violence to a path of development since 2001. During his tenure as the chief minister, he is credited with ending militant insurgency and mitigating violence in addition to improving the state’s fiscal condition. Even before the Congress could overcome its shock, the party suffered another blow when its veteran politician from Gujarat and Sonia Gandhi’s closest aide Ahmed Patel passed away on November 25 due to health complications after testing positive for COVID-19 on October 1. He was admitted to a hospital in Gurugram on November 15 and died on November 25.Political observers have said that with his death, the Sonia Gandhi era in the Congress party is coming to an end. This is because Ahmed Patel was a needle-threader extraordinaire. He made the Congress system work for Sonia, and vice-versa. What made him invaluable to Sonia was his lack of political ambition even though he had ample opportunities to rise higher up the political ladder. Patel was deeply unassuming and never showed preferences for friends over enemies. It was said that he had many friends even in the rival political party. It was this cultivated reticence and a deep sense of discretion that enabled him -as well as gave others confidence in him - to operationalise a vast network of connections; he was accessible and available to anyone, from civil society to industry to religious sects to party cadres. If Sonia sustained herself as the longest serving president of the Congress, it was for one and only one reason- she had Patel in her corner, watching out for her interests as well as what was best for the party. With the Congress sinking deeper due to internal crisis and Sonia in poor health and Rahul reluctant to retain the top AICC post, the absence of both Ahmed Patel and Tarun Gogoi is surely going to be felt in the days to come.
DailyDevotion The Focal Point of Spiritual Power …except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ… —Galatians 6:14 If you want to know the power of God (that is, the resurrection life of Jesus) in your human flesh, you must dwell on the tragedy of God. Break away from your personal concern over your own spiritual condition, and with a completely open spirit consider the tragedy of God. Instantly the power of God will be in you. “Look to Me…” (Isaiah 45:22). Pay attention to the external Source and the internal power will be there. We lose power because we don’t focus on the right thing. The effect of the Cross is salvation, sanctification, healing, etc., but we are not to preach any of these. We are to preach “Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2). The proclaiming of Jesus will do its own work. Concentrate on God’s focal point in your preaching, and even if your listeners seem to pay it no attention, they will never be the same again. If I share my own words, they are of no more importance than your words are to me. But if we share the truth of God with one another, we will encounter it again and again. We have to focus on the great point of spiritual power— the Cross. If we stay in contact with that center of power, its energy is released in our lives. In holiness movements and spiritual experience meetings, the focus tends to be put not on the Cross of Christ but on the effects of the Cross. The feebleness of the church is being criticized today, and the criticism is justified. One reason for the feebleness is that there has not been this focus on the true center of spiritual power. We have not dwelt enough on the tragedy of Calvary or on the meaning of redemption.

Youth and Covid-19: Build back better
he novel coronavirus has been extremely devastating for India with negative GDP forecast, whooping unemployment, and progress over poverty set to reverse. However, the ill-effects of the pandemic have been essentially skewed against the youth (15-29 years) as they face a trilemma of drastic unemployment, disruption in education, and failing education system. This largely disproportionate economic impact on India’s youth requires a more targeted government approach to not only relieve the youth of the current economic distress but also to avoid a demographic disaster presently facing India. Drastic unemployment: Prior to the pandemic, Labour Force Participation Rate among the youth was drastically decreasing, falling from 56.4% in 2004-05 to 38.1% in 2018-19. An even more disturbing figure – “Not in Labour Force, Education and Training” (NLET) in India which estimates the number of people who are neither working nor looking for work nor undergoing education or training, accounted for 100.2 million young people in India. This steep figure was despite various government interventions for increasing skilling, entrepreneurship and job creation in the country. To make things worse, through financial and economic crisis of the past, it is clear that youth are exceptionally vulnerable and prone to unemployment during downturns and the covid-19 pandemic is likely to be no exception. Evidence indicates that unemployment rate among the youth is more sensitive to the business cycle. The current
F
pandemic-induced economic downturn is no different. Young people are more likely to be laid off due to lack of skills and experience. Increasing contractual nature of work has also been endowed upon the younger population relative to their older counterparts, leaving their employment status more fragile. According to a study conducted by the International Labor Organization (ILO), even before the pandemic, younger people were three times more likely to be unemployed and the pandemic has only exacerbated this. Another study by Asian Development Bank (ADB) and ILO estimates that on account of the pandemic 4.1 million jobs pertaining to the youth would be lost in India alone. Disruption to education: The pandemic has also disrupted education of 73% of the global youth around the world, and India, with stark levels of inequality in access to education is set to experience the worst. Young women are particularly vulnerable to this disruption due to increase in the burden of unpaid care work at home. Evidence from the Ebola crisis suggests that this reason contributed to more young girls dropping out of education as compared to boys. With the household incomes being severely depressed due to the crisis, it is highly plausible that young girls and boys, especially in the rural area, would drop out of education to support their families. Furthermore, the disruption in education becomes even greater due to the problem of digital divide in India. With wide disparities in ownership of smartphones and access to internet, many of India’s stu-
dents are experiencing a rather long hiatus in their education. While, schools are being opened in some areas, online schooling to prevent large gatherings is mostly prevalent. A recent report by Prof. R.C. Kuhad Committee of the University Grants Commission highlights how the large gaps in India’s current digital infrastructure leaves the country inept at adopting online modes of education. The digital divide, growth in unpaid care work, and the need to urgently address income losses at home has caused wide spread disruptions in education which is set to severely impact the education of young people, causing long term consequences in terms of rising inequality, low human capital development and further unemployment. Failing education system: To add to the worrying unemployment and education scenario for the youth, the failure of the multi-state, multi-institutional, multi-board education system to cope with the pandemic is also affecting the to-be graduates. Delayed examination in turn leading to postponement of recruitment of final year students has created an environment of uncertainty and gloom with many even losing their job offers entirely. While this is painful in the short run, it has long term impacts as employment and remuneration are not dependent on education and skills only but also previous employment status of the applicant and break years have the possibility of shifting the entire remuneration curve to a lower base point. T h e Tr i l e m m a : T h u s, young people are facing a trilemma – unemployment due to poor job market conditions
for the youth; disruption in education due to dropouts and digital divide; and the inability to join the work force due to incessant delay in examinations and provision of degrees. The covid-19 pandemic has not only hindered economic and physical health of the country but has also hindered India’s ability to capitalize on its youth. With time running out and India already moving on its pathway to becoming an ageing country, urgent steps need to be taken to prevent one of the biggest assets – young people, turning into a burden. The latter is likely if we continue treading on the present path of unemployment, indecent jobs and ever-increasing NELT numbers. Build back better: The sectors which created the highest number of jobs for the past decade i.e. manufacturing, construction, trade, hotel and transport are most badly hit due to the pandemic. Large public investment and targeted effort especially towards the younger section of population is required to revive these sectors. In order to insulate the youth from severe unemployment, Urban Unemployment Guarantee Scheme, as proposed by Jean Dreze, with special focus on youth employment via provision of “decent work” is crucial. Additionally, special efforts need to be made to ensure minimal disruption in continued education and to bridge the digital divide. According to a recent survey by the Indian Government’s National Sample Survey Office, less than onefourth households in the country have access to the internet and this number is suspected to be lesser than one-tenth when it
comes to household with students. Several, but not all, state governments have taken steps to meet this issue and prevent dropouts. There is a need for a larger and more holistic action and implementation from the Centre as different states have different capabilities when it comes to meeting the challenge and absence of uniform initiatives from the Centre will lead to regional divides among the youth. Additionally, focus should be on education that produces not only job seekers but also job creators and sustained emphasis on entrepreneurship should be maintained. A well-functioning skill demand and skill supply matching framework needs to be created through collaboration between the industry and the government. The World Economic Outlook (October 2020) reports that the pandemic will leave deep scars and slow growth for India in the medium term as labour markets take time to heal, uncertainty and balance sheet problems arrest investments and loss in schooling exacerbates human capital deficit. In such a scenario, India cannot afford to fail its youth. India is already running out of time to make the most out of its demographic dividend necessitating the employment of urgent action. In the absence of proper initiatives and corrective actions in areas of employment and education, it will be staring at a demographic disaster, unable to catch up with contemporaries like East Asian tigers who grew on the shoulders of their youth. Understanding the ‘Indo-Naga’ peace talks
ive years ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a promising statement, “Today we marked not merely the end of the problem, but the beginning of a new future. We will not only try to heal wounds and resolve the problem, but also be your partner as you restore your pride and prestige”. It was said on signing of the Framework Agreement (FA) between the Government of India (GOI) and the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN) on 3rd August, 2015 in New Delhi. If spoken words have meanings then perhaps his statement seemed lost its purpose and intent in its translation into action. On the ground peace talk for political solution is headed for dead-lock. India is a land of truth seekers and believers. Seeking truth for liberation is an act of ingenuity. The principle of truth is not based on size, number or perceptions but facts and justice. The Naga peoples’ political issue is based on that principle of truth and liberation. Not only in the power corridors of North Block & South Block but people at large deserve to know the truth why Indo-Naga peace talks continues since July, 1997. Unfortunately there seem to be less truth seekers and believers in India of 21st century. Few media outlets are reporting different contradictory views and opinions which has generated lots of confusion. A backgrounder: The Naga political problem precedes India’s independence. When the elites of India were organizing the first session of the Indian National Congress in 1885, the Nagas were battling the great British Empire. The battle begins ever since the British encroachment on the Naga territories in 1832. After the British conquest, the Naga hills were kept under the ‘Excluded Areas’.
When the British left Indian sub-continent, the republic Indian state claimed that it was the legal heir of everything left by the British, a position not acceptable to the Nagas. This historical fault-line is the crux of political contestations between India and Nagalim. The Naga peoples’ position is that Nagalim was never a part of India either by conquest or consent. It was a historical accident that British imperialism brought the Nagalim into British-India administration towards the end of 19th Century. So when the British left Himalayan sub-continent Naga people wanted to liberate themselves from the subjugation of India and Myanmar. Naga people’s quest for right to self-determination is based on their distinct historical, political and cultural identity which are subjects of concern for humanity. As such their right to selfdetermination is a matter of their inherent rights. On the contrary, the GOI sees the Naga issue as law and order problems or an issue that can be settled for better political position within the framework of Indian constitution. The two contesting narratives are not mere perceptions but of factual fundamental differences that need to be addressed if parties to the negotiations are meant for lasting solution. Practical approach: Politics being an art of making the impossible possible, the Frame-work Agreement was signed between the two parties on 3rd August, 2015 regardless of their fundamental differences. FA is a broad parameter of terms of agreement between India and Nagalim to co-exist as two distinct entities sharing sovereign powers of a state. Therefore, Naga Flag and constitution are matters of fait accompli as per the FA. This move can be seen as paradigm shift
from the original positions of irreconcilable political differences towards a peaceful solution. The signing of the FA was considered as a practical choice to move forward that can give new course of direction by both the parties. Agreements of the past such as 9 Point Agreement of 1947, 16 Point Agreement of 1963 and the Shillong Accord of 1975 were flawed in nature and such asymmetric arrangements do not fit into smooth sailing of India-Nagalim peaceful co-existence. India’s challenge: If the Naga political solution cannot be achieved even after more than two decades of negotiations there is no reason to believe that India is a respectable partner to the peaceful solution. This message is not only for the Nagas but any other ethnic communities who are fighting for their political rights in India. To prove as a trustworthy partner to peaceful solution India needs to exhibit her political magnanimity and generosity. If it is only for economic package and re-affirming the 16 point agreement (Ar t.371A) with some cosmetic changes, that will amount to committing cardinal mistake again. Naga people cannot afford to miss the woods for the trees. NSCN’s burden: The NSCN being the principle negotiator representing the Naga people has enormous responsibility to bring home honorable and acceptable solution. Any agreement that does not protect the Naga national identity, land, history and their culture then Naga people are of the view that NSCN has no future in the Naga society. Therefore, NSCN has no choice but to stand for the Naga Flag and the Naga constitution to safeguard Naga peoples’ identity and to guarantee their legal position. If the same is denied FA is a
sham and the Indian subcontinent problem in the eastern front is not solved and will pass on to future generations. Delay in the peace process: In-spite of prime time big picture breaking news announcement at the time of signing of the FA, India seems to have ran away from its original position. The official interlocutor of the GoI’s divisive policies and misinformation campaigns within the Naga societies and hobnobbing with other splintered Naga underground groups (Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs), branding NSCN as a terrorist gang, apprehending cadres of NSCN and prosecuting them under draconian laws such as Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act etc. proved detrimental and delayed the peace process. The Naga intellectuals construed it as de-constructing process of the FA and peace negotiations. Running away from implementing the agreement which you are party to it and at the same time if your conscience is not pricked you are an untrustworthy party to do business with, a nation without self-esteemed. The incessant naming and shaming of NSCN and the Naga national movement patriarch Th. Muivah will only weaken the peace process. It is true that Muivah is getting old and age may not be at his side yet his politics of coexistence with India without compromising Nagas’ political identity is gaining more common grounds than ever before. Muivah is going to outlive many of his critics. His politics will continue to live even long after he is gone. Neighbour’s consent: GOI represents the whole of India as one single entity. It doesn’t actually need consent of any provincial state when it comes to taking any sovereign decision of a sovereign state. The
legal position is cleared about it. Therefore, GOI resorting to rhetoric of taking consent of states before signing of final agreement with NSCN is an avoidable delay mechanism to frustrate the NSCN to wean out their patience and succumb to the pressure of accepting the constitution of India. Dynamism within the Naga society: Naga people are very insular in general; very slow to bring change. But once given commitment they are always true to their words. Of late, two groups of people have come to pass. The first group represents the composite interest of the Naga people and stands for honorable and acceptable solution. The other group represents the sectarian interest and Naga intellectuals aptly called them conformist fringe elements in the society. The conformists are ready to sign an agreement within the framework of Indian constitution. They are liabilities for both India and Nagalim and have no qualms to switch side on the verse of tide. The silent majority of the Naga people and their resilient nature which is deeply embedded in their blood cannot be taken for granted. Naga people comprised of all grass-root civil societies have taken 8 times political
consultative meeting on the Indo-Naga peace talks before and after signing of the FA. It is a testimony of peoples’ mandate given to the NSCN to represent the Naga people in the political talks with GOI. This cannot be discounted just because there are some critics to NSCN. Naga people stands-by with the NSCN. In the absence of political consent India cannot fit the entire issue into one sided narrative of silly little logic to blame NSCN for refusing to accept the constitution of India. Conclusion: History is the witness that India has committed all sorts of war atrocities and human rights violations against the Nagas. The notorious and draconian law Arm Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 has failed to dampen the spirit of Naga people’s resistance. Further resorting to hamhanded military approach has the potential to push the Nagas further and farther away to unwanted block. Certainly, that is not going to bring positive change. The world expects political maturity and magnanimity from the helmsman of 21st century Indian politics Prime Minister Narendra Modi to solve the long pending Naga problem. R. A. Sir,
Poor road condition
As a concerned citizen, I am writing this letter to state the bad condition of the road which was black topped last year from Singrijan to Khriezephe Village under Pradhan Mantri A was Yojana. The road condition is becoming very bad due to heavy loaded vehicles trespassing (Dumpers, heavy trucks etc.) Therefore, kindly requesting both the village councils to look into this matter for the safety of the people at the earliest. India to encourage solar modules: PM
New Delhi, Nov 26 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said India will offer production-linked incentives for high-efficiency solar modules to boost the generation of electricity from renewable sources which has the potential to generate an annual business USD 20 billion. Speaking at the REInvest 2020 conference, he invited global investors to join India’s renewable energy journey. “There are huge renewable energy deployment plans for the next decade,” he said, adding that these are likely to generate business prospects of the order of around USD 20 billion per year. “Today, India’s renewable power capacity is the fourth largest in the world. It is growing at the fastest speed among all major countries,” he said. At current exchange rates, USD 20 billion translates to around Rs 1.5 lakh crore and Rs 15 lakh crore in a decade. pacity will rise to 220 GW by 2022 from the current 136 Giga Watts (GW), he added. At present, renewable energy capacity is about 36 per cent of the country’s total electricity generating capacity. Modi said that after the success of Production Linked Incentives (PLI) for electronics manufacturing, “we have decided to give similar incentives to high-efficiency solar modules”. He, however, did not elaborate. The prime minister also stressed that ensuring “ease of doing business” is our utmost priority and dedicated project development cells have been established to facilitate investors. “In the last six years, we increased our installed
renewable energy capacity by two-and-a-half times,” he said. “Our annual renewable energy capacity addition has been exceeding that of coalbased thermal power since 2017”. Even when it was not affordable, investments were made in renewable energy. Now, investments and scale are bringing costs down, he said. Noting that in the last six years, India has been travelling on an unparalleled journey, Modi said, “we are expanding our generation capacity and network to ensure every citizen of India has access to electricity to unlock his full potential”. He also emphasised that “we are showing to the world that sound environmental policies can also be sound economics”. “We have ensured energy efficiency is not limited to one ministry or department, instead, it has been made a target for the entire government. All our policies have a consideration of achieving energy efficiency,” Modi emphasised. He inaugurated the

The phase-three randomised double-blind placebo-controlled multicentre trial would cover around 28,500 subjects aged 18 years and above. It would be conducted in around 25 sites across 10 states. The trial has already started at a few sites. The Bharat Biotech has been given the permission for conducting phase-3 human clinical trials of the Covaxin from the Drugs
Controller General of India (DCGI) The safety and immunogenicity data of the phase one and two trials were submitted to the central drug regulator. The Hyderabad-based firm, while applying for phasethree trial, stated that the vaccine was well-tolerated in all dose groups and no serious adverse events have been reported. The most common adverse event was pain at the injection site, which resolved transiently, the source said. Besides, Covaxin, four other vaccines are under different phases of clinical trial in India with the Serum Institute of India conducting phase-three trial of the Oxford-Astrazeneca COVID-19 vaccine while the indigenously developed vaccine by Zydus Cadila has completed phase-two clinical trial in the country.
Beijing, Nov 26 (PTI): China and India have maintained “candid and in-depth communication and coordination” to promote disengagement in areas along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh after the eighth round of talks to resolve the current standoff, the Chinese military said on Thursday. The Chinese and Indian militaries held the 8th round of Corps Commander-level meeting on November 6 to resolve the military standoff that errupted in early May. “Since the 8th round of China-India Corps Commander-level meeting, the situation in the China-India border areas have remained stable on the whole” Senior Colonel Ren Guoqiang, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defence told an online media briefing responding to a question on the current situation at the India-China border. “Following the meet-
HYDERABAD, NOV 26 (IANS): Hyderabad police on Thursday booked BJP leader Tejasvi Surya for entering Osmania University and addressing a meeting without permission. A case of trespass was booked against BJP youth wing president on a complaint by the university authorities. Telangana Director General of Police M. Mahender Reddy told reporters that a case was booked on a complaint by the university registrar. The case was registered three day after Surya, who is also a member of Parliament from Bengaluru, and his followers threw open the university gate and removes the barricades to enter the campus. The young leader, who was in Hyderabad to campaign for BJP in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections, addressed the students at Arts College and claimed that the police at the behest of Telangana government tried to stop him. The police, however,

had denied this. M. Ramesh, De puty Commissioner of Police, East Zone, had tweeted that police has not stopped any one at the Osmania University gate and that the programme is going on smoothly. “The law and order situation is peaceful and there is no tension as reported,” he had said. Meanwhile, the BJP has condemned booking of case against Surya. Party’s national general secretary Bhupender Yadav said this shows the desperation of Telangana government. He said KCR is clearly rattled having sensed a reinvigoration of the revolutionary spirit in the youth of Telangana.
BJP has no place in Bengal: Mamata Banerjee Kolkata, Nov 26 (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday claimed that the BJP is a party of outsiders which has no place in the state. The Trinamool Congress supremo also said she will never allow Bengal to be turned into a “riot-torn Gujarat”. Wondering why Union Home Minister Amit Shah is so busy with elections even when the situation on the country’s border is not good, Banerjee said she has never seen such a “home minister in her career”. “There is no place for outsiders in Bengal. Those who come to the state only during elections and try to disturb peace of the state are not at all welcome, she said while addressing a press conference here. The BJP has recently divided the state into five organisational zones and put central leaders in charge of them. “They (BJP) are saying they will convert West Bengal into Gujarat. Why do they want to turn our Bengal into a riot-torn place like Gujarat? We don’t want riots,” she said.

Mumbai, Nov 26 (PTI): Stan Swamy, the 83-year-old tribal rights activist arrested for his alleged involvement in the Elgar Parishad case, will have to wait a few more days for a straw and a sipper cup he needs as a Parkinson’s patient. Responding to Swamy’s request for these items before a special court here on Thursday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) said it did not take the straw and sipper from Swamy during his arrest, as claimed by the activist. Following the central agency’s response, the special court rejected Swamy’s application. Swamy then moved a fresh application seeking permission to use a straw and a sipper and winter clothes inside the jail. The court sought a reply from the jail authorities and adjourned the matter till December 4. The NIA which arrested Swamy from his residence in Ranchi on October 8, had earlier this month sought 20 days’ time to respond to his request for the straw and sipper.

The summit is being organised by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, and this year’s theme is ‘Innovations for Sustainable Energy Transition’. Power Minister R K Singh said that India has transformed from being energy deficit to being energy surplus, connected the entire country with one grid and connected 28 million households in 18 months which is the largest programme in the whole world. India’s Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) state that 40 per cent energy production would be from nonfossil fuel sources. Singh said that India currently has 38.1 per cent installed capacity from nonfossil fuel sources. By 2030, India plans to achieve 64 per cent power generation capacity from renewable sources, which would be 24 per cent higher than our commitment under Paris Agreement, he added.

He said that the government should understand that the small-scale businesses in manufacturing and the services are different animals and must be treated differently by the policymakers. Indian industry cannot be competitive unless the promoters and managers treat workers as partners, argued Bhargava. He pointed out that Maruti owes its success to explaining to its workers that they will prosper if the company grows and backing that with policies and actions that delivered income and career growth to the employees. He said that Indian workers had been protected and pampered by the government and the courts before 1991 and the managements themselves had made no attempt to educate workers about what they would gain if the company grew.

DIMAPUR, NOV 26 (NPN): Nagaland Foothill Road Coordination Committee (NFHRCC) has convened an emergency meeting at its base office here at 10 am on November 28 and requested all respective tribal members to attend positively. According to a press release issued by committee’s convener Supu Jamir, general secretary W Lemba Chang and assistant general secretary W Chenithung Humtsoe, the meeting has been necessitated due to the aggressive behaviour shown by agitating parties from Assam site at Nakachari and Mariani sectors in the name of the economic blockade, seizing public vehicles, all of which needs to be resolved amicably. The committee further strongly appealed to the State government and Naga public not to be complacent and sleep over the “Naga survival road” (the Foothill road) and urged upon all stakeholders to take up the issue seriously. It also sought an appointment with deputy chief minister Y Patton, who also holds home and R&B (PWD) portfolios, on the issue of making the Foothill road pliable during dry season and expected to be reciprocated at the earliest.

New Delhi, Nov 26 (IANS): India has the capability to become a lower cost producer than China if the industry and the government work together, Maruti Suzuki India Chairman R.C. Bhargava said on Thursday. Bhargava presented his ideas on making Indian manufacturing globally competitive at an online dialogue with the country’s management leaders organised by All India Management Association (AIMA). Bhargava argued that the only objective of government policies has to be to increase the competitiveness of Indian industry so that it can make things at the lowest cost and the best quality in the world. “The more the industry can sell, the more jobs will be created in the economy,” he said. He pointed out that Maruti Suzuki produces more cars each year without adding to its work-

However, he said, a few “imperfections” are evident in the market, like secondary market liquidity confined to benchmark tenor papers, predominance of “buy and hold” and “long-only” investors hurting diversity of views and interest rate derivative markets remaining limited to Overnight Indexed Swap product. Mumbai, Nov 26 (PTI): After the 23.9 per cent GDP contraction in the AprilJune quarter following the COVID-19 pandemic, economic recovery momentum has been stronger than expected, Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das said on Thursday. Das, however, said that we need to be watchful of the demand momentum sustaining after the festivities as well, and also warned of downside risks to growth coming from a rise in virus infections in select pockets. The heavy contraction in Q1 was attributed to the near-complete chilling of all economic activity in the wake of one of the strongest lockdowns enforced anywhere in the world. The RBI, which has introduced many unconventional measures to aid recovery apart from cutting key rates by 1.15 per cent, expects the economy to shrink by 9.5 per cent in FY21. “After witnessing a sharp contraction in the

India and Nepal agree to advance We’re at war with virus, not each other: Biden mutual cooperation as FSs hold talks
WASHINGTON, NOV 26 (PTI/IANS): US President-elect Joe Biden has reminded Americans that they were at war with the coronavirus and not against each other, as he called for an end to the “grim season of division” in the country. In a Thanksgiving address ahead of the holiday, he urged fellow Americans to forgo high-risk holiday traditions, as cases of the virus continue to surge in the US, the worst-hit nation with over 262,100 deaths. “I know the country’s grown weary of the fight. But we need to remember, we’re at war with the virus, not with one another. Not with each other. “This is the moment where we need to steel our spines, redouble our efforts and recommit ourselves to the fight,” Biden said, speaking from his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware. “ L e t ’s r e m e m b e r : We’re all in this together,” the 78-year-old Democrat said on Wednesday. He offered condolences to those who have lost loved ones during the raging pandemic and are struggling around the holidays, and spoke about the pain he has felt after members of his own family passed away
also urged Americans to keep their indoor holiday gatherings as “small as you possibly can.” Biden did not mention President Donald Trump, a Republican, by name in his address, saying only, “In America, we have full, free elections. Then we honour the results.”
The former US vice president won the November 3 election over Trump, who is continuing his legal efforts to upend Biden’s victory. Trump has allowed the official start of Biden’s transition to power this week but has not yet conceded defeat.

too soon. The president-elect vowed that the pandemic would be beaten. “I believe this grim season of division... is going to give way to a year of light and unity.” He said he knows that this time of year can be especially difficult. “Believe me, I know,” Biden said. “I remember that first Thanksgiving. The empty chair, the silence. Takes your breath away,” he said, apparently referring to the personal tragedies in his own life. Biden’s wife and infant daughter were killed in a car accident at Christmas time in 1972, and his son Beau died of brain cancer in 2015. “It’s really hard to
care,” Biden said. “It’s hard to give thanks. It’s hard to even think of looking forward, and it’s so hard to hope. I understand. I’ll be thinking and praying for each and every one of you at this Thanksgiving.” The Thanksgiving holiday comes as coronavirus cases spike nationwide, bringing the total of deaths in the US up to nearly 260,000 as of Wednesday, and as a fresh wave of public health restrictions have been put in place to control the spread of the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended last week that Americans should not travel for Thanksgiving. The country’s top infectious disease doctor, Dr Anthony Fauci has
in the US on Wednesday ordered an injunction halting the certification of the rest of the ballots in the presidential election, pending a hearing about a case filed by Republicans alleging irregularities in mail-in voting. The ruling came one day after the state’s department of state certified the results for Democrat Joe Biden and Governor Tom Wolf ’s subsequent ascertainment that the former vice president is the apparent president-elect, the Xinhua news agency reported. Republican voters in the state, including Representative Mike Kelly and GOP congressional candidate Sean Parnell, brought up a case alleging that a state law allowing for no-

The hearing is scheduled for Friday. Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro disputed the ruling, saying on Twitter that the “order does not impact yesterday’s appointment of electors. We will be filing an appeal with the Pennsylvania Supreme Court momentarily.”
KATHMANDU, NOV 26 (PTI): India and Nepal on Thursday agreed to step up efforts to advance mutual cooperation during a “productive” meeting between Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla and his Nepalese counterpart Bharat Raj Paudyal. Shringla began his two-day official visit to Nepal on Thursday. He was accorded a warm welcome on his maiden visit to Nepal which is happening at the invitation of Nepal Foreign Secretary Paudyal, amid a strain in bilateral ties following a bitter border row between the two countries. “FS @harshvshringla had a productive meeting with @PaudyalBR during which they took stock of bilateral cooperation and discussed issues of mutual interest,” the Indian embassy in Kathmandu said in a tweet. “Both sides appreciated the progress made on the numerous bilateral initiatives and projects. It was agreed to take further steps to advance mutual cooperation,” it said in another tweet. Shringla arrived at Tribhuvan International in Kathmandu on Thursday

I was here in Kathmandu earlier too, though this is my first visit to Nepal as a Foreign Secretary. We have very strong relationship. Our endeavour will be to see how we can take that relationship forward”. “I would like to thank the government of Nepal, the foreign secretary for the warm hospitality extended to us. We have some very good meetings ahead of us and we will look forward to how that goes. My first meeting will be with the Nepalese Foreign Secretary and then I will meet Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali. I will also hold meetings
with high dignitaries in Kathmandu,” he said. Shringla’s visit will be a continuation of the regular exchange of highlevel visits between the two friendly neighbours, the Nepalese Foreign Ministry said in a statement this week. He is also scheduled to call on Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli and President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Thursday. On Friday, he will give a lecture on India-Nepal relations at Hotel Soaltee Crown Plaza in Kathmandu and will inspect three schools built under Indian assistance at Gorkha, the epicenter of the 2015 earthquake, it said. Shringla will also hand over COVID-19-related support to the Government of Nepal before wrapping up his two-day visit on Friday.

Indonesian Minister arrested for graft in lobster seed export case
JAKARTA, NOV 26 (IANS): Indonesian Minister for Maritime and Fishery Affairs Edhy Prabowo has been arrested on charges of corruption related to a controversial policy to resume exports of baby lobsters. At a press conference held at the commission’s headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday evening, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) senior officials said Prabowo and his colleagues have allegedly received bribes amounting to at least 9.8 billion rupiahs (695,655 US dollars) from exporters who took advantages from his decision to lift the ban on lobster larvae export, Xinhua reported.
Early on Wednesday, the Minister along with his wife and a number of people were detained by the anti-graft officials at the Soekarno-Hatta Airport after a working visit to the United States. As many as seven people, including the minister, have been named suspects after several hours of interrogation. Prabowo made a public apology for his wrongdoing after the KPK’s press conference. In November 2008, 10 LeT terrorists sailed into Mumbai from Karachi and carried out coordinated attacks, killing 166 people and injuring over 300. Nine of the attackers were killed by police while lone survivor Ajmal Kasab was caught and hanged after trial in India. On the 12th anniversary of the Mumbai terror attack, its mastermind Saeed is in jail in Lahore, serving a collective over 21-year sentence under terror financing charges. LAHORE, NOV 26 (PTI): Twelve years after the 26/11 attack, Pakistan has placed 19 members of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in a list of the “Most Wanted Terrorists” for their role in the heinous assault, but it has not initiated any serious efforts to nab them and also punish seven others who are facing trial here. The security agencies here are clueless about the whereabouts of these 19 most wanted terrorists. Some of them have been hiding in Pakistan and others are believed to have fled the country. These terrorists were either crew members of the boats used by the attackers or financiers of the 26/11 attack. The move to place 19 LeT terrorists in the list apparently came following the Paris-based global money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog’s recent decision to retain Pakistan on its grey list till February 2021. The Financial Action Task Force made the decision after Islamabad failed to fulfill its six key obligations, including failure to take action against two of India’s most wanted terrorists – Jamat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed and Jaish-e-Mohammed head Masood Azhar. The security agencies have prepared a list of over 1,200 most wanted/high profile terrorists in Pakistan to enable more coordination among authorities to go after them, officials from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) told PTI. The FIA, Pakistan’s top investigating agency, has been probing the Mumbai terror attack case since 2009 and is looking for
NAIROBI, NOV 26 (AP): Ethiopia’s prime minister said Thursday the army has been ordered to move on the embattled Tigray regional capital after his 72-hour ultimatum ended for Tigray leaders to surrender, and he warned its half-million residents to stay indoors and disarm. The military offensive “has reached its final stage” after three weeks of fighting, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s office said. That means tanks and other weaponry can close in on Mekele, whose residents had been warned of “no mercy” if they didn’t move away from Tigray leaders in time. That caused international alarm as rights groups said such wording could violate international law and put civilians in further danger. ollywood celebrities on Thursday remembered the horrors of the Mumbai terror attack of 2008 and paid a tribute to the martyrs who laid their lives trying to save the city. On November 26, 2008, ten Pakistani terrorists of the terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba sneaked into Mumbai through the sea route, and unleashed havoc in various parts of the city killing over 160 people. Over the course of their attack, nine terrorists were killed while Mohammed Ajmal Kasab was arrested and finally executed in November 2012. The terrorists targeted common people at major spots like Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station, Taj Mahal Palace hotel, Cafe Leopold, Cama and Albless Hospital, Nariman House, and Oberoi-Trident Hotel. Recalling the horror, superstar Akshay Kumar tweeted: “Akshay Kumar: 26/11, a day Mumbaikars will never forget. My

Cooking with wood may cause lung damage: Study
P
eople who cook with biomass fuels like wood are at risk of suffering considerable damage to their lungs from breathing in dangerous concentrations of pollutants and bacterial toxins, say researchers, including one of Indian-origin. Pollutants from cooking with biomass are a major contributor to the estimated 4 million deaths a year from household air pollution-related illness. “It is important to detect, understand and reverse the early alterations that develop in response to chronic exposures to biomass fuel emissions,” said study co-author Abhilash Kizhakke Puliyakote from the University of California San Diego in the US. For the findings, the research team investigated the impact of cookstove pollutants in 23 people cooking with liquefied petroleum gas or wood biomass in Thanjavur, India. The researchers measured the concentrations
of pollutants in the homes and then studied the lung function of the individuals, using traditional tests such as spirometry. They also used advanced CT scanning to make quantitative measurements -- for instance, they acquired one scan when the person inhaled and another after they exhaled and measured the difference between the images to see how the lungs were functioning. Analysis showed that the ones who cooked with wood biomass were exposed to greater concentrations of pollutants
and bacterial endotoxins compared to liquefied petroleum gas users. They also had a significantly higher level of air trapping in their lungs, a condition associated with lung diseases. “Air trapping happens when a part of the lung is unable to efficiently exchange air with the environment, so the next time you breathe in, you’re not getting enough oxygen into that region and eliminating carbon dioxide,” said Dr Kizhakke Puliyakote. “That par t of the lung has impaired gas exchange,” Puliyakote added. The researchers found a smaller subset of the biomass users who had very high levels of air trapping and abnormal tissue mechanics, even when compared to other biomass users. In about one-third of the group, more than 50 per cent of the air they inhaled ended up trapped in their lungs. (IANS)
It doesn’t take much to be a changemaker: Dia Mirza Sanjay Dutt’s new film ‘Torbaaz’ discusses terrorism with human angle
A
ctress Dia Mirza says change is driven by the power of empathy, compassion and intention. “I have understood one thing that in order to be a changemaker, it doesn’t take much. It just takes the power of empathy, and compassion and intention to kick in,” Dia told IANS. “If you are a good human being, who is responding to the travails of society, you respond to it from a place of compassion and action, and think, ‘we are not going to sit back and just watch. I want to make a difference. Let me figure out how’,” added the actress, who is seen hosting “Bharat Ke Mahaveer”. The series brings stories as representative of the spirit of solidarity in the country, and celebrates Indians who have shown extraordinary kindness during the coronavirus pandemic.
“These are examples of such people who just said, ‘I am going to use my time, my resources, my energy, even if my resources are limited, I will use whatever is accessible to me to make a difference’,” said the actress. Talking about the show, Dia said: “I thought I have to do this simply because I feel that pandemic has had a deep impact on people’s lives, and it is necessary for us to highlight stories of upliftment and positive change... These are experiences that just enrich your own life by giving you an opportunity to engage and interact with such people.” The series airs on Discovery channel, and Discovery Plus app, and comes in partnership between the United Nations in India, NITI Aayog and Discovery channel. F
ilmmaker Girish Malik, who directs Sanjay Dutt in his new film Torbaaz, says he wanted to show a story of hope and discuss terrorism with a human angle in the upcoming release. Torbaaz is the story of a man who rises above personal tragedy and decides to transform the lives of refugee camp kids who are on the path of destruction, through the game of cricket. “I really like bringing forth stories and characters that people have never imagined. There is so much in this world which needs to be told through the medium of cinema. The world of filmmaking is very fascinating for me and I like presenting every character in its most honest and impactful manner. That has always been my priority. ‘Torbaaz’ is one
such story and will surely leave an impact on the viewer,” Malik said. Talking about the journey, he shared: “The idea is to show a story of hope and also to discuss terrorism with a human angle. The journey was a rollercoaster with ups and downs. Lots of challenges and hardships, but the passion to tell this story and to tell it a certain way was huge. It is a story with a massive canvas, and considering the scale required it was tough. It was nothing short of an ordeal to be
honest.” “I like to tell stories that make an impact and are interesting to watch too. I am not making a documentary but the audience is intelligent today, so the authenticity needs to be there. I don’t take my audience for granted. Filmmaking is my passion. And I am a very visual person. I think in visuals,” he added. Torbaaz stars Sanjay Dutt with Nargis Fakhri and Rahul Dev. The film releases on Netflix on December 11. (IANS)

Mikkelsen, 55, who is known for his role as serial killer Hannibal Lecter in the U.S. television series “Hannibal,” will play the evil wizard Gellert Grindelwald in the spinoff movie from “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling. Depp was forced to exit the role earlier this month after losing a libel case in Britain against a tabloid newspaper that branded him a “wife beater.” The threeweek trial in July heard evidence from Depp and his former wife Amber Heard about a tempestuous marriage marked by violence on both sides and of heavy drinking by Depp. Depp, who had earlier begun production on the third “Fantastic Beasts” movie in London, said he was asked to leave by Warner Bros. Thousands bid adieu to Maradona as Argentina grieves
BUENOS AIRES/ NAPLES, NOV 26 (AGENCIES/IANS): Thousands of fans are paying their final respects to Argentine football legend Diego Maradona at the presidential palace in Buenos Aires. Three days of national mourning have begun in Argentina after Maradona, a national hero, died following a heart attack on Wednesday at the age of 60. S o m e we p t , o t h ers blew kisses and said prayers as they filed past the coffin being displayed at Casa Rosada. A million people are expected to visit his casket. Officials had rushed to install cordons and other measures to try to limit the spread of coronavirus, as big crowds gathered on the capital’s Plaza de Mayo on Wednesday night. Late into the night, a sea of people in Argentina shirts thronged the streets across the countr y to mourn Maradona’s death, and celebrate his life. Maradona, one of the greatest football players of all time who played for clubs including Barcelona and Napoli, was captain when Argentina won the 1986 World Cup, scoring the famous “Hand of God” goal against Eng-
aside with Pelé paying tribute to Maradona as a dear friend. “One day, I hope, we will have a kick about together in heaven,” he said. His former Argentina team-mate Ardiles said today’s football superstars “could not even dream” of being admired as much as Maradona was. “He will be remembered as a genius in football,” he told the BBC. “You can see the extraordinary amount of interest that he generates.” When the news of Maradona’s death broke, Argentina and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi led

land in the quarter-finals. Former Tottenham midfielder Ossie Ardiles, who played alongside Maradona at the 1982 World Cup, said he was “a god” in Argentina, in Naples and all around the world. Maradona’s death has triggered an outpouring of grief in Argentina and across the world. At 22:00 on Wednesday (01:00 GMT) - an hour chosen to match the number on his shirt - stadiums across Argentina switched on their floodlights to honour his memory. Fans flocked to La
Bombonera, Boca Juniors’ stadium in Buenos Aires, where many were in tears. Thousands of miles away in Italy, fans also gathered outside Napoli’s San Paolo stadium, which was lit up in tribute to the man who scored 81 goals in 188 appearances for the club. Fireworks erupted in the sky as those below, clad in Maradona shirts and even Maradona face masks, chanted and wept. Maradona was not just a sportsman for Argentines, he was an icon, a political player and of course, a loveable rogue.
There is deep sadness as people pay their respects to their superstar footballer. But his influence goes beyond Argentina - South Americans are proud of their footballing heritage so this news has resonated across the region. In neighbouring Brazil, where their man Pelé vied for the title of world’s best footballer, Maradona’s death was headline news - much of the rivalry between the two countries can be put down to the two players, such is the passion for the beautiful game here. But rivalry was put
Napoli to rename its stadium in honour of Maradona
Serie A club Napoli on Thursday renamed its stadium in honour of Diego Maradona a day after he died aged 60. Club president Aulerio de Laurentiis said in a statement that the San Paolo Stadium will now be renamed after him. “I believe it is right to name the San Paolo after you, so we can keep you with us as a witness of the excellent path this team has taken,” said de Laurentiis in a statement put up on the club’s website. Earlier, Naples mayor Naples Luigi De Magistri had urged Napoli to change the name of the stadium in honour of the Argentine football great. “We will name the Stadio San Paolo in honour of Diego Armando Maradona!” he tweeted. Maradona played for Napoli between 1984 and 1991, winning the Serie A twice, one Coppa Italia, and the UEFA Cup once. Napoli had never won the title before Maradona’s arrival, even flirting with relegation many a times. Maradona left as the club’s highest goalscorer, a record that stood until 2017 when Marek Hamsik surpassed his record.

AUCKLAND, NOV 26 (IANS): Six members of the Pakistan’s touring squad in New Zealand have tested positive for novel coronavirus, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) informed on Thursday. This was reported to the NZC after some of the members of the touring side, which is currently in isolation at a facility in Christchurch, had “contravened protocols on the first day of managed isolation”. “Two of these six results have been deemed “historical”; four have been confirmed as new,” NZC stated in a media release. “This means that, in line with the protocols governing the squad’s entry into New Zealand, the six members of the squad will K Y M C
be moved to the quarantine arm of the managed isolation facility,” it added. Following the development, the Pakistan team’s exemption to train while in managed isolation has been put on hold until investigations have been completed, the host board further said. Prior to leaving Lahore, all members of the Pakistan touring squad had returned negative results on the four occasions they were tested. “Separately, NZC has also been made aware that some members of the Pakistan team had contravened protocols on the first day of managed isolation. We will be having discussions with the tourists to assist them in understanding the requirements,” NZC stated.

23 players for the battle and we’re looking forward to it greatly,” added Jones. “Twelve months ago, Wales were Grand Slam champions and three points from a World Cup final, so we know what they are capable of.” Cowan-Dickie and Watson both return to the matchday squad after injury, while Willis - who made his debut against Georgia - is recalled after missing out against Ireland. Ben Earl is also named on the bench, with Jones opting for a split of six forwards and two backs. The Bristol flanker revealed on Tuesday he had been training as a back in case he is needed to cover that area. “Obviously I’m a flanker first and foremost, but a little bit of versatility doesn’t harm and I am happy to do whatever job is required of me,” Earl said.

PRESS RELEASE
While deeply appreciating the present Government for sanctioning Up-gradation of PWD Road covering 19Km from Botsa to Sendenyu via Tsiemekhuma under PMGSY during 2018-2019, the people of Sendenyu Lojvü/Range (Sendenyu, Thongsünyu, New Sendenyu and Lotsüphen Villages) including the villages of Botsa, Tsiemekhuma Basa, Tsiemekhuma Bawe and Rümesinyu are compelled to publish this press statement out of utter frustration and profound dismay relating to the implementation of the said PMGSY Road which connects the above mentioned villages to the National Highway at Botsa. We have learned from reliable sources that the work order for up-gradation of this road has already been issued but due to litigation by vested interest of some contractors, the works have been put on hold. It is pertinent to mention here that 1) The said road connecting these villages to the National Highway is the only road in Kohima district taken up by PWD which have not seen periodical maintenance, forget about blacktopping in its entire life since 1964. 2) The villages using this road face untold hardships especially pregnant women seeking maternity care and sick children and villagers seeking emergency medical services. This becomes more acute during the monsoon seasons. 3) Children from these villages seeking education face unimaginable hardships including trekking for long distances to attend schools at Botsa, Tseminyu and Kohima due to the bad condition of this road. 4) The land under these villages is fertile and blessed with bumper crops and vegetable harvests but the pathetic condition of this road is a big hindrance to the farmers wanting to market their produce to nearby highway or towns. 5) The poor and helpless villagers of this area are denied of transportation be it private or Govt. (Especially NST service) due to this road not being upgraded or black-topped. 6) Historic Parashen, the first Naga Flag Hoisting Site located between Sendenyu and Rümesinyu villages is being increasingly visited by people having interest in the history of the Nagas. But this road in the present condition is a big setback and a source of illrepute and rapidly becoming an eyesore. 7) The Sendenyu people are conserving their biodiversity and wild-life through community initiatives for at least two decades now, for which numerous awards and citations have been credited to them Even NEC has initiated Eco-tourism Destination Centre adjacent to the Community Bio-diversity Reserved. But the said road which is the life-line and thoroughfare for all projects remains unattended and neglected thus far. Therefore with much anguish and feeling of being side-lined for so long, the undersigned villages leaders appeal the concern authorities to resolve any dispute and start the upgradation/improvement of the said road without further delay, failing the concerned public shall be compelled to take its own course of action deemed fit for which the persons/authority responsible for delaying/failure to implement the lifeline project of the people of this range shall solely be held responsible.

Sergio Cidoncha (5’) and Gary Hooper (45+1’) gave Kerala Blasters a two-goal lead in the first half but Kwesi Appiah (51’) and Idrissa Sylla (90’) made sure that NorthEast United ended the night with a point. Kibu Vicuna made four changes to the Blasters lineup which lost 0-1 a g a i n s t AT K M o h u n Bagan. Nishu Kumar made his debut replacing Prasanth K at right-back. before NorthEast United could settle in. Seityasen Singh sent a curling freekick from the right flank and skipper Sergio Cidoncha met the delivery with a brilliant header. Vicuna’s men could have doubled the lead in the 23rd minute when Cidoncha set up the perfect ball for Gary Hooper inside the box. The move started with a backpass from Khassa Camara which was intercepted by Hooper. The English striker went forward with the ball and
passed it on to his right to Cidoncha who quickly returned the favour. However, the former Norwich City striker failed to convert a tap-in from within the six-yard box. Nor thEast star ted to look dangerous after the first 30 minutes and created a big chance to equalise. Ashutosh Mehta latched onto a through ball from Gallego as he entered the penalty box from the right side and tried to push the ball into the net but it rolled wide. In the 45th minute,
the Highlanders were dealt a huge blow when Rakesh Pradhan brought down Puitea to give away a penalty. Before the foul happened, Dylan Fox had blocked Costa Nhamoinesu’s headers twice inside the box. Sydney Thunder beat Brisbane Heat to reach final S Y D N E Y, N O V 2 6 (AGENCIES): Sydney Thunder pulled off a remarkable 12-run win over Brisbane Heat to reach the final of the Women’s Big Bash League. Chasing 144, the Heat - champions for the past two seasons - collapsed from 119-4 to 131 all out despite Laura Kimmince’s 37 off 17 balls in Sydney. Hannah Darlington, 18, took 3-19, while Sammy-Jo Johnson claimed 2-14 against her former side. The Thunder will meet Melbourne Stars in the final on Saturday at 08:10 GMT. Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont will come up against England team-mates Nat Sciver and Katherine Brunt, who helped the Stars beat Perth Scorchers on Wednesday, at the same venue on Sunday. website. Beaumont had a hand in two run-outs, having scored a 20-ball 27 in the Thunder’s 143-6. Knight, the England captain, made 17 for Thunder, who were grateful for Rachael Haynes’ wellpaced unbeaten 48 off 44 deliveries. The Heat’s chase unravelled with two run-outs in three balls in the 16th over. Georgia Voll was well short as Kimmince called for a second to deep mid-
wicket, before Beaumont - who had earlier dismissed Nadine de Klerk for 27 with a direct hit - and Johnson combined to remove Amelia Kerr. With 15 needed off 19 balls, the Heat were still favourites, but the powerful Kimmince - having hit two fours and four sixes - was bowled via inside edge and pad as she attempted a reverse sweep. Seamer Darlington struck twice in two balls to hasten the slide, and John-
son took a smart return catch to seal Thunder’s victory. “That’s the reason I play cricket - I love situations like that,” said player of the match Darlington. Jo h n s o n s a i d : “ I thought they had it in the bag. on to Kwesi Appiah inside the box after a miscommunication between Albino Gomes and Bakary Kone. Appiah tried to push the ball into the net first time with his shoulder but Gary Hooper blocked it from the goal line but the Ghanaian did not make a mistake in finding the back of the net from the rebound. The Highlanders were handed a golden opportunity to equalise in the 65th minute when Lalengmawia was brought down inside the box by Jessel Carneiro but unfortunately, Appiah blasted the spot-kick above the crossbar to squander the chance. The away side finally restored parity in the 90th minute when Idrissa Sylla controlled a long ball from Gurjinder Kumar with his chest inside the box and fired it into the net. Highlanders climbed up to the top of the league table with four points from the first matches while Blasters remain on the eighth position with just a point.

It has been suggested that the World Cup winner could make a push for the exits at Stamford Bridge in January. Giroud has slipped back down the pecking order in west London and found regular game time hard to come by. He has admitted that, at 34 years of age, he will have to weigh up his options when another transfer window opens. He did, however, offer another reminder of what he is capable of when netting the winning goal for Chelsea in their 2-1 Champions League victory over Rennes on Tuesday.

NBA All-Star scheduled for 2021 in Indianapolis postponed to 2024
NEW YORK, NOV 26 (IANS): The NBA and the Indiana Pacers have announced that NBA All-Star in Indianapolis, which was originally scheduled for February 12-14, 2021, will now be held February 1618, 2024. “Public health conditions prevented the Pacers, the NBA All-Star Host Committee and the NBA from appropriately planning and executing fanfocused All-Star activities in Indianapolis that were envisioned for this February,” an NBA release stated. The 2024 NBA All-Star Game will take place at Bankers Life Fieldhouse,
home of the Pacers, on February 18, 2024. “While we are disappointed that the NBA All-Star Game will not take place in Indianapolis in 2021, we are looking forward to the Pacers and the city hosting the game and surrounding events in 2024,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. “I want to thank Herb Simon, Steve Simon, Rick Fuson and the entire Pacers organisation as well as the NBA All-Star 2021 Host Committee and the community of Indianapolis for working with us to reschedule our All-Star activities.” NBA All-Star 2024 in Indianapolis will follow
Cleveland in 2022 and Salt Lake City in 2023 as All-Star host. The 2024 game will mark the second NBA AllStar in Indianapolis, which hosted the midseason classic in 1985. “We are excited about the opportunity to bring Indiana the very best All-Star experience in 2024,” said Pacers owner Herb Simon. “The effor ts of so many Hoosiers to prepare for NBA All-Star 2021 put us ahead of the game for the hard work to come, and we are so grateful to the NBA for once again recognising Indianapolis as a city that delivers world-class events,” he added.
Aus vs Ind: Crowds to return to stadia S Y D N E Y, N O V 2 6 (IANS): The three-match ODI series between India and Australia, which will get underway at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday, will also be the first time that men’s cricket will see specatators in stadia since March when international cricket had come to a halt following the coronavirus outbreak. The first two matches at the SCG will be played at 50 per cent crowd capacity while the third ODI at Canberra will be played at 65 per cent crowd capacity. The coronovirus pandemic had forced all international series as well as domestic competitions, like the Indian Premier League (IPL), to be played behind closed doors. Australia’s limited overs skipper Aaron Finch on Thursday said that the team was excited to play in front of crowds again. “The last time we played in front of crowds in Australia was a very long time ago. There has been a huge amount of

work going to allow that to happen -- from the public in various states there has been tremendous amount of work done to keep coronavirus under control. We are really excited. We know how much of a great atmosphere would it be,” said Finch. “You need to get in quick though as tickets, starting at $30 for adults and $10 for kids, are in high demand. Both Manuka Oval, Canberra (65 per cent) and the SCG (50 per cent) will be at limited capacity,” cricket.com. au said in a FAQ section about the series. Following the three ODIs and
as many T20Is, Australia and India will compete in a four-match Test series. The Adelaide Oval, which will host the first Test, will allow 27,000 spectators or 50 per cent of its capacity on each match day. For the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, 25,000 fans for each day have been currently allowed by the Victorian government. The SCG, like the ODIs and T20Is, will hold 50 per cent of total capacity for the third Test. Brisbane’s Gabba venue can host up to 30,000 fans, or 75 per cent of its capacity for the fourth and final Test.
Bayern, Man City win to advance to Champions League last-16 Mike Tyson says world L O N D O N, N OV 2 6 (AP): After the Champions League paused to pay tribute to Diego Maradona, defending champion Bayern Munich and Manchester City won to advance to the knockout rounds. The Argentina great’s death was announced two hours before the first games kicked off. A minute’s silence was observed by players before each of the eight games, which were all played in empty stadiums because of the coronavirus pandemic on Wednesday. Bayern’s 3-1 win over Salzburg included Robert Lewandowski’s 71st Champions League goal, tied for third all-time with Real Madrid great Raul. City’s 1-0 win at Olympiakos means six elite teams are already into the last 16 with two rounds of the group stage still to play. Barcelona, Juventus, Chelsea and Sevilla advanced on Tuesday. lose 2-0 at home against Atalanta. Eden Hazard’s seventh-minute penalty in a 2-0 win at Inter Milan helped ensure Real Madrid is back on track after a shaky start to the campaign. Inter is last in group B and facing elimination. Marseille, the 1993 European champion, and debutant Midtjylland can-
not advance after losing their fourth straight games, against Porto and Ajax, respectively. BAYERN EXTENDS STREAK Bayern’s victory was its 15th straight in the Champions League dating to the start of last season.Lewandowski opened the scoring in the 43rd, picking up the re-
bound when Thomas Müller’s shot was saved. The Poland captain now trails only Cristiano Ronaldo’s 131 Champions League goals and Lionel Messi on 118. After winning 6-2 at Salzburg three weeks ago, Bayern gave a Champions League debut to 20-yearold American defender Chris Richards and a first
European start to Spanish midfielder Marc Roca. Roca was sent off with the score at 2-0 though Leroy Sane´ soon extended the lead with a soaring header. Bayern’s maximum 12 points in Group A is seven clear of Atlético Madrid, which was held 0-0 at home to Lokomotiv Moscow. MADRID WINS IN MILAN Real Madrid’s backto-back wins over Inter Milan have repaired the damage of a surprise opening loss at home to Shakhtar Donetsk last month. A 2-0 win at San Siro was also the first time Madrid had beaten either Inter or AC Milan at the iconic stadium, though coach Zinedine Zidane’s team did win the 2016 final there against city rival Atlético. Hazard’s early penalty was his first goal in the Champions League for three years, and Rodrygo’s second-half header secured the points. Inter played most of the game with 10 men after Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal was sent off. Vidal was shown two yellow cards within seconds when
berating referee Anthony Taylor for a penalty kick not being awarded. Madrid still trails Group B leader Borussia Mönchengladbach by one point, after the German side cruised to a 4-0 win over Shakhtar. Inter, though, is six points behind Gladbach with two games to go. Borussia’s standout goal was its third, an overhead kick by Switzerland forward Breel Embolo. FODEN STARS Denied regular playing time in the Premier League, 20-year-old Phil Foden made use of a start from coach Pep Guardiola to score in the 36th and seal Manchester City’s 1-0 win at Olympiakos. City has a perfect four-win record to advance to the knockout rounds for an eighth straight season, and will likely be joined by Porto. The two-time European champion won 2-0 at Marseille which slumped to a 13th straight loss in the competition dating back to the 2011-12 season. Porto is six points clear of third-place Olympiakos with two rounds left.

Mike Tyson
NEW YORK, NOV 26 (AGENCIES): Mike Tyson says his record-breaking run to the top of world heavyweight boxing arrived too early in life when he was weighed down by “emotional vampires”. Tyson is making a return to boxing at the age of 54 in an exhibition bout with Roy Jones Jr on Saturday. There has been intrigue over to what to expect and how the man who became the youngest heavyweight champion in history - aged 20 - will perform. “I think Roy can handle getting slapped around a little bit,” said Tyson. “It’s going to be really hot in that kitchen.” Speaking to Eddie Hearn’s ‘No Passion No Point pod-
cast’ on BBC Sounds, Tyson appeared light-hearted in his threats to Jones and the likelihood of any serious fight breaking out between the pair is diminishing as the event draws nearer. The body sanctioning the exhibition has stated both fighters will wear 12oz gloves, the eight rounds will be two minutes in length rather than three and that the pair “shouldn’t be going for a knockout”. It would appear the event is in place to satisfy the curiosity of seeing Tyson in the ring against former four-weight world champion Jones, 51, rather than to offer a platform for either to chase future fights in the sport. It has provided scope for Tyson’s past to be revisited, including his world-title win in 1986, his imprisonment for rape six years later and the financial and drug problems that became well documented later in his life. “The best time of my life was probably right before I won the title,” Tyson told Hearn. “When I won the title it got tricky. It wasn’t the right time for me. I had too many emotional vampires around me.”
