Protesting farmers finally enter Delhi North Delhi ground becomes epicentre of farmers’ protest NEW DELHI/CHANDIGARH, NOV 27 (PTI): Hundreds of farmers entered the national capital on Friday to hold peaceful protest at a north Delhi ground after facing tear gas and water cannons and clashing with security personnel while thousands remained at border points, undecided whether to go to the demonstration site identified by police. The day witnessed police using teargas shells, water cannons and multilayer barriers to block the protesters and the farmers pelting stones and breaking barricades in some places in their determination to push through as part of their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march against the Centre’s new farm laws. Farmer leaders from Punjab and Haryana said the stir has now become a “people’s movement”, drawing support from various sections of society. Meanwhile, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra

Singh Tomar appealed to the protesting farmers to end their agitation and said the government is ready to discuss all issues with them. Asserting that the new farm laws will bring tremendous improvement in the lives of farmers, he said the government was already engaging with various farmers’ organisations and they have been called for discussions on December 3. Around 600 farmers headed to Sant Nirankari Ground, one of the biggest in the national capital, following several hours of confrontation with the police at different border points with Haryana. After a meeting between farmer leaders and senior police officers, the Delhi Police allowed the protesters to hold

demonstration peacefully at Nirankari Ground, but senior farmer leader Darshan Pal later said they would stay put at border points on Friday night and a decision on whether to go to the identified protest site or not will be taken on Saturday. At the Tikri border, some groups of farmers were escorted by police personnel around 3 pm amid tight security and taken towards the identified protest site. But those gathered at the Singhu border, one of the main routes used to access the city from Punjab, had not entered the city till late evening. As more Punjab farmers crossed the state’s border with Haryana, by evening, all police barricades at the border with Punjab and along the highway to Delhi

were lifted, allowing traffic to run as before. In Uttar Pradesh too, farmers staged sit-ins and demonstrations at many places, including Lucknow. In Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Baghpat and Gautam Budh Nagar in western UP, besides Jhansi and Jalaun in Bundelkhand region, protests on various roads resulted in considerable blockades and traffic disruptions. Earlier in the day, carrying flags and shouting slogans, protesting farmers at the Delhi-Haryana Singhu border pelted stones and broke barricades as they clashed with Delhi Police which used tear gas shells to disperse them. The security personnel baton charged the protesters for a brief time. Around three police officials were also injured. Angry farmers, who were denied entry into the national capital for their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march against the farm laws, managed to break the first layer of barricading, at the border. Plumes of smoke were seen as security personnel used multiple rounds of tear gas to disperse the farmers at the Singhu border. A multilayer barricading was in

place at the Singhu border to prevent farmers from entering the national capital. At the Tigri border, security personnel used water cannons to disperse farmers trying to gain entry to Delhi. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government on Friday denied permission to the Delhi Police to convert the city’s stadiums into temporary jails in view of the protest by farmers against the new farm laws. While rejecting the police’s request, Delhi Home Minister Satyendar Jain said every Indian citizen has the constitutional right to protest peacefully for which they cannot be put in jails. In a letter to the principal home secretary, Jain said the central government should accept the demands of the protesters and added that putting farmers in jails is not the solution. Farmers have assembled near the borders in tractor-trolleys laden with rations and essentials for the march. Authorities in Haryana have imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC in several parts of the state to prevent assembly of the protesters.

Increase enrolment in schools: Kronu

Neiba Kronu, Kevizakie Rio and others at GHS Zuketsa Phek on Friday. (NP)

Correspondent KOHIMA, NOV 27 (NPN): Minister of Planning & Coordination, Land Revenue and Parliamentary Affairs, Neiba Kronu on Friday pointed out that improving school infrastructure was not enough but the enrolment of students in Government schools must be increased. Stating this, he appealed to the citizens of Zuketsa to put more efforts and cautioned that low students enrolment will lead to discontinuation or merger of schools as per the policy of the education department.

The minister said this during the inauguration of four newly constructed buildings at Zuketsa under Phek district. The buildings included Government High School Zuketsa, strengthening of existing school building under Samagra Shiksha, GA Rest House under CAWD Nagaland and Tribal Hostel Building under Article 275 (1), Government of India. Kronu acknowledged the contractors for their sincerity and commitment towards the welfare of the village by utilising the amount sanctioned judiciously. Stating that delay in

construction works were intended to escalate project cost by multiple times over the original estimates, the minster called for scrapping this system as it put financial burden on the state exchequer. Further, reminding the gathering that peaceful environment and unity was prerequisite for all round development, he appealed to the public to cooperate with the government and stay connected with the various developmental packages. On the occasion, Kronu announced that repairing and maintenance of Viswema-Zuketsa road till

Pfutsero will begin from December. Joint Mission Director Samagra Shiksha Nagaland, Dr. Kevizakie Rio also stressed on the need for increasing enrolment of students in government schools and reminded that only the best qualified teachers were appointed by the government. He said that under the Right to Education Act, the government has opened schools in all the villages to provide quality education to students. He lauded the judicious use of the fund in construction of RCC structured school buildings at Zuketsa. Earlier, the function was led by Chakhesang Public Organisation president Mikha Kenye while welcome address was delivered by Zuketsa Area Public Organisation (ZAPO) president Sabou Krome. Vote of thanks was proposed by ZAPO finance secretary Kedoutsolhi Wetsah. Later, Kronu inaugurated Zapami Village Hostel constructed under Article 275(1) during 2019-2020.

CoMSO stages protest to implement ILP in M’laya

Shillong, Nov 27: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO), a conglomerate of several organisations, staged a protest on Friday demanding immediate implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) and repeal of the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act. CoMSO, hoisted banners and black flags in different parts of the State urging prime minister Narendra Modi, home minister Amit Shah and chief minister Conrad Sangma to implement the ILP without further delay in the entire Meghalaya. ‘Conrad Sangma prove yourself that you can lead Meghalaya to ILP regime… if not please step down,’ ‘Amitji Modiji in Meghalaya we need ILP,’ ‘Yes ILP, no CAA,’ were some of the banners hoisted.

Aizawl, Nov 27 (PTI): Independent MLA Lalduhoma, who got the dubious distinction of becoming the first Lok Sabha MP to be disqualified under the anti-defection law in 1988, was on Friday disqualified as a member of the Mizoram assembly for defecting to the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM). Announcing his dis-

The banners also denounced the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and stated that ILP is the mechanism that can protect the interest of the indigenous people of Meghalaya. Recently, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had met Home Minister Amit Shah and impressed upon him on the need to implement ILP in Meghalaya . He also reminded Shah about the resolution passed by the State Assembly. However, the central government has replied that it’s examining the matter. The powerful Khasi Student’s Union, which has been demanding for implementation of ILP in Meghalaya for several decades now, has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking for his intervention to implement the ILP in the State.

Lamphrang Kharbani, whose organisation Hynniewtrep A’chik National Movement is part of the CoMSO, said that the Centre should respect the resolution passed by the State Assembly which has sought for the implementation of the ILP in the State. “The Centre should respect the sentiments and the aspirations of the people of the State and implement ILP in Meghalaya,” Kharbani said, adding that if the Centre can implement the ILP in Manipur, why the same rule can’t apply in Meghalaya. He also said all the 60 MLAs in the State should collectively demand from the Centre to implement the ILP. The HNAM president further added that the two BJP MLAs (AL Hek and Sanbor Shullai) should seek their party’s help in implementing the ILP. He said that the black flag and banners were hoisted to remind the Centre that the people are waiting for the implementation of the ILP. “If the Government doesn’t respond to our demand we would intensify our agitation after December 4,” Kharbani said.

BSF-BGB IG level meeting held in Tripura

BGB and BSF officials during a meeting, in Agartala, Friday. (PTI)

Agartala, Nov 27 (PTI): Border Security Force (BSF) and Bangladesh Border Guards (BGB) on Friday agreed to initiate pre-emptive measures to ensure peace along the international border and prevent border crimes, a senior officer of the paramilitary force said. A host of bilateral issues like construction of single-row fence in many places along the Indo-Bangla border were also discussed at the two-day IG level border coordination conference which ended at the BSFs sector headquarter at Salbagan here on Friday, Inspector-General (IG) of BSF Tripura Frontier Sushanta Kumar Nath said. “We exchanged views, ideas and concepts on border- related issues in a very friendly environment with an aim to further strengthen the already robust and good relations. “We discussed some

important border issues at length and affirmed to act against all sorts of crossborder crimes. Both delegations agreed to amicably resolve all pending issues and strengthen bonds of friendship, trust and cooperation,” Nath told reporters. India and Bangladesh share a 4,096 km long semiporous border, out of which Tripura shares 856 km, parts of which are still unfenced in patches. Additional Director General of BGB Khondoker Farid Hassan said, both sides have expressed zerotolerance towards border crimes such as smuggling of drugs, explosives and human trafficking. “Both the forces have agreed to initiate preventive action against such crimes and maintain vigilance in vulnerable areas and enhance confidence-building between BSF and BGB by holding regular meetings,” he said.

COVID: Night curfew re-imposed in Mnp Correspondent

IMPHAL, NOV 27: In its bid to break COVID-19 spread in the state, the Manipur government on Friday announced re-imposition of night curfew in the entire state with immediate effect. State chief secretary Dr Rajesh Kumar who is also the chairman of the State Executive Committee of the State Disaster Management Authority today ordered the re-imposition of the night curfew from 6pm till 4am. There will be relaxation to the movement of essential services, goods trucks and officials on duty during the curfew hours. Fur ther, hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, dispensaries and all chemists and pharmacies will also be exempted from the curfew, it added. The chief secretary, in his order, directed district magistrates of all the districts of the state to issue necessary orders on the re-imposition of night curfew The order also re-imposed restrictions on gathering of more than 20 people at social and customary ceremonies. “Social and customary ceremonies should be organised for family members only and in case some other

persons are required to attend the ceremony or function, the size of the gathering should be restricted to 20 or less persons strictly”, the order stated. Manipur witnessed rapid surge in the COVID-19 infections among the general populace in the last few months despite various restrictions imposed to break the chain of spread of the virus. The daily update of the state health department on COVID-19 status showed seven COVID-19 related casualties and 222 fresh infections in the last 24 hours (till 4pm of November 27). The deaths of seven patients in the past 24 hours was the second biggest single-day COVID-19 casualty recorded in the state ever since spread of the disease in the state in March last. Earlier, nine deaths in a single-day was recorded in the state on November 2 last. The death toll due to the pandemic in the state rose to 256 on Friday. The infection tally of the state also rose to 24,514 after 222 fresh cases were reported during testing of 2,521 samples in the past 24 hours. So far, a total of 4,13,240 samples have been tested in the state till date. As per the daily update report, of the 222 new infections reported on Friday,

qualification, Speaker Lalrinliana Sailo said that Lalduhoma has ceased to be a member of the state legislature for violating the anti-defection law by defecting to a political party after getting elected as an Independent in the 2018 assembly polls. A former IPS officer, he was once in charge of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s

security. He won the Lok Sabha election in 1984 uncontested as a Congress candidate. Lalduhoma, who lost his Lok Sabha membership after he resigned from the Congress, also became the first MLA of the state to lose his membership for defection. “After a thorough study of the case and hear-

ing the statements from the respondent (Lalduhoma) and the petitioners, it is clearly verified that the MLA has joined the ZPM in theory and practice, which the respondent himself admitted in his declaration on September 19,” the speaker said. Twelve MLAs of the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) had petitioned the

speaker, seeking the disqualification of Lalduhoma for allegedly violating Para 2 (2) of 10th Schedule of Constitution. The speaker said that Lalduhoma has forsaken his character as an Independent and defected to the ZPM, which was clearly indicated by his actions. “Now, therefore, on

the basis of findings, I have no other option but to carry out my solemn duty under Constitution against the MLA, who was elected independently and was not set up by any political party. The petitions filed by the petitioners seeking the disqualification of the MLA are allowed and therefore Lalduhoma has been disqualified from be-

Of the seven COVID fatalities reported on Friday, four were from Imphal West and three from Imphal East district. Except a 32year-old woman from Imphal East, others deceased were males. Meanwhile, 208 more patients recovered on Friday, pushing the recovery tally to 21,006. The recovery rate was 85.68 per cent. The numbers of active COVID-19 cases in the state stood at 3,252 on Friday which includes 306 were CAPF personnel Meanwhile, the state health authority has identified four districts as COVID-19 hotspot regions of the state where serosurveillance will be initiated from November 30. Addressing the weekly press briefing on COVID-19 status, state principal secretary health Vumlunmang Vualnam named the four COVID-19 hotspot districts as Imphal West, Kakching, Ukhrul and Churachandpur districts. “We will start serosurveillance in these four districts, targeting to collect 4,600 samples, from November 30,” he said.

Jihad against love

linding themselves with ‘Islamophobia”, BJPruled states have taken up ‘Love Jihad’ as a national issue and have either enacted or in the process or amended previous legislations to curb what they believe is fraudulent conversions of Hindu girls to Islam through marriage. The term ‘Love Jihad’ is xenophobic and attests crime when Muslim men marry Hindu girls, who then get converted to Islam. It may be true in some cases but not in every case. Ironically, there is no bar nor sin nor crime in Hindu men marrying Muslim women who get converted to Hinduism. Interfaith marriages are valid and the only means of stopping them has been through physical intervention by groups such as the Bajrang Dal and various Hindu Senas. Since it is practically impossible to prevent all inter-faith marriages between Muslim men and Hindu women, Hindutva leaders have discovered a more effective way: preventing such marriages by enacting a law. Significantly enough, in this endeavour, they are being encouraged by the judiciary. Thus, Yogi Adityanath chief minister of UP became the first chief minister to declare that he would enact a law to stop ‘love jihad’. The Yogi government has approved the Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion Bill 2020 that seeks to bar ‘forceful religious conversions’, including for marriage. He cited the September 23 judgment of the Allahabad High Court which held that conversions only for the sake of marriage are not valid. Ironically, the case involved a Muslim woman who had converted to Hinduism to marry a Hindu. She urged the court to protect her from her parents; the legality of her conversion was not the issue before the court. Uttarakhand, also led by a BJP administration under Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, had brought a similar law in 2018. Trivendra Singh Rawat, a prominent RSS member, enacted the Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion Act, 2018. It became the first anticonversion law which lists ‘marriage’ alongside other fraudulent means of conversion. Himachal Pradesh, another BJP-ruled state led by chief minister Jai Ram Thakur, followed suit by amending the state’s 2007 anti-conversion law in 2019. The law is more or less a reflection of the one in Uttarakhand. The UP ordinance also appears to have adopted its basic structure from the Uttarakhand legislation. India has practically given up the claim of being secular through enactment of various laws that violate the right to Freedom of Religion as enshrined under Article 25,26,27 and 28 of the Indian constitution. As one can find so many religions being practiced in India, the constitution guarantees to every citizen the liberty to follow the religion of their choice. However, this right does not seem to apply to minorities. Today majoritarianism sweeping across India means there is only one religion for one nation. Those wishing to convert from Hinduism to other religions have to fill in forms of declarations at offices of district magistrates two months ahead and be subjected to probe by police. Then those priests or pastors will also be subjected to probe. The anticonversion law amended to include marriage will not be applicable to those from the majority religion. ‘Love Jihad’ is thus, BJP’s jihad against love marriage and another religious terror word like ‘cow protection’ being used to demonise a religion and weaponise another. A day may soon come when India’s secular tapestry would be obliterated.

DailyDevotion The Consecration of Spiritual Power

…by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. —Galatians 6:14 If I dwell on the Cross of Christ, I do not simply become inwardly devout and solely interested in my own holiness— I become strongly focused on Jesus Christ’s interests. Our Lord was not a recluse nor a fanatical holy man practicing self-denial. He did not physically cut Himself off from society, but He was inwardly disconnected all the time. He was not aloof, but He lived in another world. In fact, He was so much in the common everyday world that the religious people of His day accused Him of being a glutton and a drunkard. Yet our Lord never allowed anything to interfere with His consecration of spiritual power. It is not genuine consecration to think that we can refuse to be used of God now in order to store up our spiritual power for later use. That is a hopeless mistake. The Spirit of God has set a great many people free from their sin, yet they are experiencing no fullness in their lives— no true sense of freedom. The kind of religious life we see around the world today is entirely different from the vigorous holiness of the life of Jesus Christ. “I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one” (John 17:15). We are to be inthe world but not of it— to be separated internally, not externally (see John 17:16). We must never allow anything to interfere with the consecration of our spiritual power. Consecration (being dedicated to God’s service) is our part; sanctification (being set apart from sin and being made holy) is God’s part. We must make a deliberate determination to be interested only in what God is interested. The way to make that determination, when faced with a perplexing problem, is to ask yourself, “Is this the kind of thing in which Jesus Christ is interested, or is it something in which the spirit that is diametrically opposed to Jesus is interested?”

India’s expectations from Biden Presidency

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi has personally congratulated President-elect Joe Biden on his success and used the occasion to emphasise on the importance of strategic partnership between the two countries. There is little doubt that the change of regime in the US will not affect the tested foundations of this friendship that were in fact laid with Obama administration declaring India as a major defence partner of the US. The deep convergence that Modi government struck with the US in the Presidentship of Donald Trump on most matters relating to security and economic development established a bench mark in Indo- US relationship and this will have to be sustained by the two sides through a new set of interactive meetings at various levels. Much water has flown down the bridge since the times of Obama-Biden rule in US and the government of Dr Manmohan Singh in India -the geo- political changes revolving round Xi Jinping’s China and the transition of ‘war on terror’ to a broader global conflict between Islamic radicals and the US -led West, warrant a new effort by the two nations to steer the democratic world towards greater safety and security. India would keenly watch President Joe Biden unfolding his foreign policy agenda. So far he has not spoken on Pakistan or on the rise of Islamic militancy on the latter’s soil. Also, his approach to China may be firm without replicating the hard line of Trump while in respect of Putin’s Russia- with whom Trump seemed to have an even tie - Biden’s view is that the former superpower is an adversary that should be made to pay for its alleged interference in the last US election. Unlike Trump who was cool

towards Europe, Biden wants to restore American ties with it- this fits in with his attitude towards Russia. Biden does not share the visceral dislike of Islamic militancy that Trump displayed through his tenure. The stand of the Democrat President on Pakistan, China and Afghanistan will therefore be of great strategic interest for India. The President elect has in his statements and write ups focused entirely on the domestic scene that prevails in the US in the aftermath of a bitterly contested election and pledged to unite the nation, get on with the effective handling of Covid and work for restoring ‘decency’ in America’s socio-political life. It is a fact that the political divide has been sharpened by ideological, demographic and class polarisation cumulatively caused by the appeal of America First, economic downturn resulting from the pandemic and the tensions on the street generated by the campaigns. Some analysts term this as the after effect of ‘Trumpism’ on American politics. The democratic environ at home will reestablish itself with passage of time but for the world outside, particularly India, Biden’s foreign policy package would be eagerly awaited as that would have to define the new regime’s stand on a vast spectrum of global hot spots like America’s trans- Pacific policy, security of Indo- Pacific, trade imbalance between US and China, peace in Afghanistan and climate change. President Trump would be remembered for breaking from the traditional polity to confront the new challenges of the present, for shifting the focus from the international politics to the economic situation of Americans at home and for being straightforward about not letting the growing threat of Islamic

militancy reach the US soil again. An area of possible strain for India could crop up in the Biden administration at some point of time because of the ideological proneness of a Democrat dispensation to getting easily influenced by the motivated campaign of liberal lobbyists who had lately become active also against Modi government in India -particularly in its second spell. A politically inspired combine is forming in India around the so called left liberals including Maoists, practitioners of minority politics who ran down nationalism and some sections of the opposition, with the aim of somehow pulling down the Modi rule. This axis is rapidly linking up with forces outside - led by the Pak lobby against Indiaand building a narrative that human rights were in jeopardy in the Modi regime. It is significant that this anti-Modi ‘alliance’ has suddenly assumed a high profile in Kashmir well after the completion of an year since the abolition of Articles 370 and 35A of the Constitution by the Indian Parliament. It comprises the pro-Pak separatists, the valley based politicians seeking to benefit from an anti- India stance and some forces in the national opposition. They are inclined to invite the intervention of the Sino-Pak alliance to keep Kashmir separated from India. Somewhere these desperate elements might be thinking that a democrat regime in US - unlike the Trump presidency- would be easier to influence with a narrative of ‘suppression of Kashmiris’. If the past conduct of Pakistan is an indicator a desperate attempt would be made by that country also to precipitate violence in Kashmir to draw attention of the new US President. India will no doubt take an early opportunity to convey it to

the Biden administration that the problem in Jammu and Kashmir- that was an integral part of India -was one of infiltration of Mujahideen by Pakistan from across the LoC and not of democratic prodevelopment governance of the state that the Centre was now ensuring. If necessary Biden-Harris leadership would have to be reminded that there was no room for a third party intervention in the affairs of Kashmir. The big picture about the likely course of IndoUS relationship under Biden regime is that the strategic partnership between the two countries will remain undiminished at the level of complete interoperability and exchange of military intelligence that had already been reachedthis is primarily because the two largest democracies do share a common threat from an ambitious China. However, in respect of the forces of radical Islam which considered the US as their prime enemy, ambiguities may arise if the Democrat leader underestimates the potential for global disruption that Pakistan- known to be harbouring Islamic extremists and radicals on its soil- carried today. The old legacy of American administration looking at Pakistan as an ‘ally’ who had ensured success of the anti- Soviet armed campaign in Afghanistan and therefore ignoring the Pak mischief of unleashing cross border terrorism against India in Kashmir, might play out again because of the reliance Biden might still put on the ‘helpful’ role of Pakistan in Afghanistan. Indian diplomacy is on test on Afghanistan since Pakistan with its special relationship with Taliban could regain its say at the cost of democratisation of that country and to the detriment of India’s strategic interest there. It is good that former

T

President Barak Obama has in his just published book revealed that Pakistan Army knew of the hideout near Abbottabad where Osama bin Laden was living before the American SEALs took him out in a covert operation conducted at the back of that army. Indian diplomacy has this challenge of counselling the new policy makers in US of the increasing hold of radicalisation in the Muslim world- enlarged by the trio of Pakistan, Turkey and Malaysia acting as its patron and doing this at the cost of US-led West, ultimately. The threat of faithbased terror arising from within the Muslim world should not be allowed to be diluted - the experience of Europe in recent times and the play of Islamic card by Pakistan in South Asia should be taken note of. Interactions between US and India at the official level as also through credible think tanks must adequately focus on this danger of the future facing the democratic world. Once it is understood that the problem in Kashmir was caused by the plan of Pakistan to replicate the Afghan Jehad there to lay claim on the territory and also by the communal agenda of the valley based parties to join hands with the pro- Pak separatists to gain political power, it would become clear that the repeal of temporary Art 370 was necessitated by the desire of India to give the state its due as an integral part of the nation. The valley- based parties have never condemned Pakistan for infiltrating terrorists in Kashmir and China for illegally occupying a large part of undivided J&K and their expression of support for these enemies of India has finally exposed them for what they are- a set of anti- India leaders not deserving of any latitude from this nation. India should be prepared to face a situation where Biden presidency

is fully geared to dealing with Chinese aggressiveness in Indo- Pacific region militarily through QUAD but is not able to see the threat of Sino-Pak collusion against this country with the same alarm. India has to continue building its defence forces to counter any joint mischief by Pakistan and China on our borders even as our military level talks with China for disengagement on LAC in Ladakh are kept up. Also, India has to use all international forums to warn the democratic world against the grave threat of terrorism that it faces on account of the spread of radicalisation not only in the Islamic countries but also in the countries that had significant Muslim minorities. It is also necessary to expose the trend developing in India of proPak lobbies working with the left liberal- anti-Modi opposition combine to play up Minority politics here on issues ranging from CAA to Kashmir. The political calculation that drives this trend is that so long as the majority community was divided in multiple ways the minority was a match winner in an electoral contest. This is the time for reaching out to the minorities with assurances of development without discrimination and equal protection of law to everybody in India on one hand and coming on with a ton of bricks on those who filled the community with exclusivist and communal thoughts and even disparaged the idea of nationalism as a uniting factor for the country, on the other. Biden-Harris team must understand that India puts all citizens on the same footing regardless of creed, class or region and that this was an example other democracies would do well to follow. D.C. What is true education?

he world is full of knowledge; we see everywhere the amount of information spread in full swing. Thoughts put into our brain and travel like a storm inside our brain and build our life. Sometimes we thought using our consciousness and sometimes without focusing on the mind. so these thoughts must not be digested in our whole life because we do not get a proper education throughout our life. So what is our true education? It means information that we got throughout our life must be useful for ideal life making, character building and which inculcate the idea of Patriotism amongst us. If you comprehend any of the above three ideas then you grasped more education than others. So we need some practical education that is to be focused to build a great Nation. Many people consider themselves as they are more educated because with the thought that they have passed a number of examinations and Secure good marks in them. The education must help the common people to put forward the best in them that is to

shape their character. As the marks in the examination does not teach the courage of a lion and struggle for existence that to be built inside. Real education is one who allows us to stand on our feet. Today’s education is not focusing on the idea of inner awakening. If you learn this then definitely your strength of the mind will be increased, you feel calm and cool throughout your day and you do not feel any kind of burden or pressure on you. It all together makes you real intellect with ideal character required for the society. We do not want students as the learned parrots. Nowadays students are learning so many subjects during the particular year they only assimilate the knowledge But they do not want to know how to apply this knowledge for the betterment of the society and for their character building because we never talked about these facts in our day to day life. So I urge you it’s our moral duty to teach our child about character building, responsibility towards society and one of the most important thing is patriotism which is required to build a great Nation. TRNYF resolves to stop trade ties with Assam DIMAPUR: After a crucial DC level meeting between Mokokchung district and Jorhat district to diffuse the economic blockade called by Assam based organisations against Nagaland ended in stalemate, the Tsurangkong Range Naga Youth Front (TRNYF) resolved to stop all trade and commerce activities with those areas in Assam that were enforcing the blockade if the blockade continues. TRNY also appealed to the neighboring and adjoining Naga areas of Tsunrangkong to show solidarity and initiate measures to stop trade in the border areas as a sign of resentment on the lackadaisical attitude of the Assam government. In a statement, TRNYF president Bendangwati and secretary Shiluyongdang cautioned that it will not be responsible for those workers in Tsurangkong, who are from the areas in Assam enforcing blockade and presently engaged in various industrial units in Tsunrangkong. It stated that the forum will be no longer in a position to protect them since the patience of the people was running out. The forum claimed that the stalemate was due to the illogical and unreasonable demands made by Assam at the meeting. TRNYF claimed that authorities in Assam were engaging in pressure tactics using various proxy organizations in and around New Sonowal. To support its claim, the forum stated that district authorities of Jorhat have neither tried to stop the earlier blockade nor there was any information of sou-moto FIR against those

toral College system used to pick US presidents. Biden’s tally is far more than the 270 needed to win the race for the White House, and he also leads the popular vote by more than six million. In his Thanksgiving Day remarks, Trump, however, said it will be a mistake if the Electoral College were to elect Biden. “It’s going to be a very hard thing to concede,” Trump told reporters when asked during a press call at the White House what he will do if the Electoral College elects Biden. “If they do, they made a mistake,” he said. On his plans for his last Thanksgiving in the White House, Trump said, “You can’t say what’s first or last.” It might be the “first one of the second term,” Trump, who is continuing his legal efforts to upend his victory. Earlier this week, Trump allowed the official start of Biden’s transition to power without conceded defeat. Biden due to be

sworn in as president on January 20. However, election officials in key battleground states have declared Biden the winner, giving him an unofficial 306-232 edge in the Electoral College that determines the outcome of US presidential contests. “This was a massive fraud,” Trump said of the election. “We are like a Third World country,” he said, referring to the voting infrastructure. “No one wants to see the kind of fraud this election has come to represent,” he added. State officials have said they do not have any evidence of large-scale voter fraud. “I don’t know what is going to happen. I know one thing, Joe Biden did not get 80 million votes,” Trump said, adding that Biden didn’t beat former president Barack Obama’s vote total with black voters. Trump’s efforts to challenge the results in key states in courts have so far failed.

UK PM warns of third new year lockdown L O N D O N, N OV 2 7 (IANS): UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has warned of a potential third “new year national lockdown”, if England eases up on coronavirus restrictions. Addressing a Downing Street briefing on Thursday, the Prime Minister said: “If we ease off now, we risk losing control over this virus all over again, casting aside our hard-won gains and forcing us back into a new year national lockdown with all the damage that would mean.” He said there was “no doubt the restrictions in all tiers are tough” but admitted previous tiers “were never quite enough”, reports the BBC. Insisting that this was “not continuing the lockdown”, the Prime Minister further said: “Across all tiers, shops will be open, hairdressers, personal services will be open, gyms will be functioning, places of worship will be open for communal worship as well, so this is a very different thing. “And I’m convinced that by April things genu-

WASHINGTON, NOV 27 (PTI): US President Donald Trump said for the first time that he will leave the White House if the Electoral College declares Joe Biden as the winner, but made clear he is not prepared to “concede” the election. Trump, a Republican, has refused to accept defeat in the November 3 presidential election, and told reporters on Thursday that it would be “hard” to concede to Biden, a Democrat. “Certainly I will, and you know that,” Trump said when asked by a reporter about leaving the White House if Biden is declared the winner on December 14. “I will and, you know that.” “It’s going to be a very hard thing to concede because we know there was massive fraud,” Trump said, once again repeating the unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud. The 538-member Electoral College is scheduled to meet on December 14 and is expected to formally declare the 78-year-old former vice president as the 46th US President. Under the US electoral system, voters do not directly choose the president. Instead, they vote for 538 officials, who are allocated to American states based on their population size. ATK Mohun Bagan beat East Bengal 2-0 in ISL

ATK Mohun Bagan players celebrate their goal against East Bengal during the ISL match on Friday.

PANAJI, NOV 27 (AGENCIES): Second-half goals by Roy Krishna and Manvir Singh gave ATK Mohun Bagan the victory 2-0 against East Bengal in Indian Super League's first Kolkata derby on Sunday. The Red and Golds showed a lot of promise on the field but couldn't beat the Bagan defence which stood strong till the end. At the other end, Krishna's

quality came to the fore and proved to be a big difference between the two teams. Antonio Lopez Habas made three changes in the ATK Mohun Bagan lineup that beat Kerala Blasters 1-0 in the season opener. Jayesh Rane and David Williams came in place of Pronay Halder and Edu Garcia and Subhasish Bose replaced the injured Michael Soosairaj. Robbie Fowler's side

commanded the game for most of the first half and attempted to be fluid in their forays forward. Anthony Pilkington came close to scoring the opening goal in the seventh minute when he received a through ball from Matti Steinmann inside the box. The former Norwich City winger did well to go past Pritam Kotal but delayed his final effort and allowed Tiri

to intercept and clear. The only proper chance ATK Mohun Bagan had was in the 36th minute when Javier Hernandez received the ball inside the box from a corner. He kept his shot on target but Debjit Majumder did well to parry the ball out for a corner. Roy Krishna finally broke the deadlock in the 49th minute with a clinical finish. Jayesh Rane initiated the move with a

pass to Javier Hernandez at the edge of the box. The Spaniard took a touch and squared the ball for Krishna who found the back of the net with a quality strike. Fowler tweaked his tactics after conceding the goal as he East Bengal shifted to a four-man defence and introduced Abhishek Ambekar on the left flank. In the 83rd minute, Pilkington unleashed a cracking shot on target from the edge of the box but Arindam Bhattacharya pulled off a brilliant save to deny the winger from scoring on his debut. Two minutes later, Manvir Singh sealed the fate of the game with a quality goal from a solo effort. The forward went past Narayan Das on the right flank before cutting into the box and finding the back of the net with a swerving shot. ATK Mohun Bagan bagged the bragging rights and also climbed to the top of the league table after today's match with six points from their first two outings.

Lewis Hamilton top in Bahrain Grand Prix first practice SAKHIR (BAHRAIN), NOV 27 (AGENCIES): Lewis Hamilton, in the first race since becoming the most successful driver of all time, dominated first practice at the Bahrain Grand Prix, reports BBC. Hamilton was 0.449 seconds ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas in second place, with Racing Point’s Sergio Perez in third nearly a second off the pace. It was an unrepresentative session, not least because the teams spent some of it assessing 2021specification tyres. In addition, it was held in daylight with qualifying and race in the dark. The test tyres added to the complexity of the session, with Hamilton and Bottas using the 2020 medium tyres to set their fastest times, while others used soft tyres or the test tyres, which were 2021spec medium compound tyres. For what it was worth, McLaren’s Carlos Sainz was fourth fastest, ahead of Alpha Tauri’s Pierre Gasly and the Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Alexander

Albon. T h e Fe r r a r i s o f Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel were 11th and 12th fastest. The second session, held at the same time as qualifying and race, is likely to be more representative as teams simulate qualifying and race performance. Racing Point, McLaren, Ferrari and Renault are locked in a close fight for third place in the constructors’ championship, with millions of pounds at stake for each position gained, with three races to go this season on consecutive weekends in the Middle East. Meanwhile, Perez, Leclerc and Renault’s Dan-

iel Ricciardo are disputing fourth in the championship behind Hamilton, Bottas and Verstappen. Unusually in the desert, there were spots of rain at various times during the session, and a number of incidents. Haas driver Romain Grosjean had a high-speed spin at Turn Six, destroying his tyres and narrowly avoiding the barriers, and Leclerc also had a less dramatic rotation at Turn Two. And Bottas struggled early on with locking his inside front wheel at Turn 10, which has a tricky entry zone in which drivers have to brake and turn, destroying his first set of tyres and damaging his second.

Grand Slam box ticked, Dominic UEL: Arsenal, Hoffenheim qualify; emotional win for Napoli Thiem targets Tokyo podium

L O N D O N, N OV 2 7 (AGENCIES): Having fulfilled his dream of joining the Grand Slam winners club by taking the U.S. Open title this year, Austrian Dominic Thiem is setting out his goals for 2021 and hopes to be standing on the podium at the Tokyo Olympics. The 27-year-old lost three Grand Slam finals before finally winning at Flushing Meadows in September, becoming the first player outside the trio of Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic to win a major since 2016. Thiem skipped the Rio Olympics in 2016 and was set to miss Tokyo due to scheduling issues before the Games were pushed back to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While next year’s tennis calendar has yet to be confirmed, the men’s world number three said Tokyo was pencilled into his plans. “I am going to partici-

pate at the Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo starting on July 23!” Thiem said in a post on his website. “I have been thinking about it for a longer period of time, and next year it eventually fits into my tournament schedule.” Thiem is coached by Chile’s Nicolas Massu, who won both the singles and doubles gold medals in Athens in 2004.

“And I am looking forward to it to compete for a medal. My coach Nicolas Massu won two gold medals in Athens in 2004, he told me about the incredibly wonderful emotions,” he added. “I want to feel these kind of emotions myself. For an athlete the atmosphere at the Olympics must be unique, I want to soak it all up.”

M O L D E ( N O RWAY ) , NOV 27 (AGENCIES): Arsenal’s record signing Nicolas Pepe got back in manager Mikel Arteta’s good books with the opening goal in his club’s 3-0 win at Molde on Thursday that sealed his side’s place in the Europa League knockout stages with two games to spare. Arteta’s side might be struggling in the Premier League but they are 100% in Group B of the Europa League, making them one of only two teams to have won their opening four games. The other is Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim who beat Slovan Liberec 2-0 away to qualify from Group L. On a hectic night of action across the continent there were many tributes to Argentine great Diego Maradona whose death rocked the soccer world on Wednesday. Nowhere was his passing felt more keenly than in Naples where Napoli, the club where he is adored, beat Rijeka 2-0 to top Group F. On an emotionallycharged evening, Napoli’s

entire team took the field wearing number 10 shirts with Maradona’s name emblazoned on the back, while a photograph of the idol stared down from the electronic scoreboard. Arsenal’s win against Molde was sparked by Pepe who was sent off in the Premier League at the weekend for a headbutt Arteta described as unacceptable. But the Ivorian made amends with a well-taken opener meaning he has been directly involved in 9 goals in his 10

Europa League games for Arsenal. Reiss Nelson converted Joe Willock’s cross to make it 2-0 before 19-year-old substitute Folarin Balogun rounded it off. Leicester City also qualified for the last 32 after an enthralling 3-3 draw away to Sporting Braga in Portugal. Fransergio looked to have won it for Braga in the 90th minute but Jamie Vardy struck late in stoppage time. Leicester are top of

Australia outscore India, take 1-0 lead in ODI series

S Y D N E Y, N O V 2 7 (IANS): Australia defeated India by 66 runs in the first One-day International at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday to take a 1-0 lead in the three-game series. Though there was a rearguard action from Hardik Pandya, who got his highest ODI score (90 off 76 balls) and added 128 runs for the fifth wicket with opener Shikhar Dhawan (74 off 86), Australia’s total of 374 for six wickets in 50 overs, their highest against India in one-dayers, proved too daunting. India finished at 308 for eight wickets in 50 overs. India lost their first three wickets inside the first 10 overs to lose momentum. Both Agarwal and fellow opener Shikhar Dhawan had given India a turbo-charged start with a 53-run opening stand in just over five overs. But then Hazlewood struck with three short-pitched deliveries to dent India’s march, picking Mayank Agarwal, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer. Earlier, skipper Aaron Finch and Steve Smith scored centuries to lead Aussie charge, after Australia won the toss.

Finch made 114 from 124 deliveries with the help of nine 4s and two 6s while Smith scored 105 off just 66 balls -- with 11x4s and four 6s -- as the hosts took heavy toll on hapless Indian bowlers who had no option to fall back on. Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was the most severely hit, going for 89 in his 10-over spell. He could

pick just one wicket. Chahal’s are the most number of runs conceded by an Indian spinner on ODIs, going worse than 85 that another leg-spinner, Piyush Chawla, conceded in his 10 overs against Pakistan in 2008. Electing to bat, the hosts started steadily with both Finch and David Warner taking their time to ad-

just to the pitch. However, once they got settled, there was no looking back as the pair shared a 156-run opening wicket partnership in 27.5 overs. During the course of the partnership, Finch became the second-fastest Australian to score 5,000 ODI runs (126 innings, 11 more than Warner). India got their first

breakthrough as Warner got out against Mohammed Shami after playing a well-rounded 69-run knock, with the help of six 4s. Smith, who came in next, started right from the word go and scored runs quickly, adding 108 runs with Finch. Finch, the Australia skipper, was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah after he got to his 17th ODI hundred. Glenn Maxwell, who had failed miserably in the IPL, came good and smashed the Indian bowlers. Maxwell used switchhit and reverse sweep to good effect as he scored 45 runs off just 18 balls (five 4s, three 6s) before getting caught at the long-on boundary off the bowling of Shami. With Mar nus Labuschagne getting dismissed soon after, former Australia captain Steve Smith ensured that he kept his team on course for a big total. He stuck to one end, kept scoring boundaries at will and brought up his 10th hundred in just 62 balls -- the third fastest by an Australian in ODIs. The former Australia skipper was bowled in the final over of the innings, but not before inflicting huge dam-

age to the Indians. Among India bowlers, only Mohammed Shami could go for under six runs an over. In reply, India got off to a horrible start losing three wickets, Agarwal, Kohli, and Iyer, in the first 10 overs. They then lost KL Rahul in the 14th over. However, Pandya and Dhawan kept the hopes alive. Pandya scored very quickly and was particularly severe on the spinners. However, the pressure got to them. Dhawan fell to a dismissal, giving a catch off Adam Zampa to short mid-off and a few overs later Pandya too fell to Zampa, holing out to long on. At the time of Pandya’s dismissal, India still needed 128 in 11 overs and they had no batsman, other than Jadeja (25 off 37) to take them. Eventually, they fell short by 67 runs. Brief Scores: Australia: 374/6 wkts in 50 overs (Aaron Finch 114, Steve Smith 105; Mohammed Shami 59/3) beat India: 308/8 wkts in 50 overs (H Pandya 90, S Dhawan 74, A Zampa 4/54, J Hazlewood 3/47) by 66 runs.

Group G with 10 points with Braga second on 7. AEK Athens have 3 points. AS Roma also sealed a place in the knockout round after a 2-0 win away to Romanian side CFR Cluj kept them top of Group A. MILAN HELD In Group H seven-time European champions AC Milan were held to a 1-1 draw by Lille after a wellworked Jonathan Bamba goal cancelled out Samu Castillejo’s effort for the Italian side.

Lille are top with 8 points, one ahead of Milan, with Sparta Prague still very much in the hunt on six after beating Celtic 4-1 for the second time in the group. Premier League leaders Tottenham Hotspur boosted their hopes of reaching the knockout phase as two goals by Carlos Vinicius, his first strikes for the club, helped them to a 4-0 win over Bulgarian side Ludogorets in Group J. Royal Antwerp beat LASK 2-0 to stay top although they and Spurs both have 9 points. In Group C Bayer Leverkusen look poised to reach the last 32 after a 4-1 win over Hapoel Beer-Sheva left them on 9 points, alongside Slavia Prague who beat Nice. Benfica came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Rangers in Group D. The Scottish club led with goals by Scott Arfield and Kemar Roofe. However, an own goal by James Tavernier threw Benfica a lifeline before Pizzi scored a brilliantly-worked leveller.
