D I M A P U R , N OV 1 (NPN): In a befitting response, Lotha Hoho has come out with a strong message that sacked parliamentary secretary Mmhonlumo Kikon “ is a leader of the Lothas and the Lotha people will stand by him as long as he does right for the Lotha people” in response to the reports that chief minister T.R. Zeliaing removed him because of failure to convince LH to withdraw its PIL against NP&NG Regulations and Rules 2012. Lotha Hoho through a joint statement issued by its chairman Mhao Humtsoe and general secretary Er. Mhondamo Ovung, reiterated that Kikon was elected by the Lotha people to stand for their rights, protect them and lead them and not to be “the errand runner of someone” and called on all Naga MLAs to note that each of them were representatives of a constituency and thus, all were basically equal. LH clarified that though it has no political interest nor was it against T.R. Zeliang so long interests of Lothas was not undermined

NSCN (I-M) reacts to K. Mulatonu DIMAPUR, NOV 1 (NPN): Reacting to the statement made by GPRN/NSCN convenor of National Political Advisory Council and kilonser, Kughalu Mulatonu that talks between Government of India (GoI) and GPRN/NSCN was on the cards and likely to start by March 2017, NSCN (I-M) said there was nothing new about such repeated empty claims. In a press note, MIP said all that they discussed “since 2007 was confined to ceasefire extension, whereby they have accepted to be disciplined under the Indian laws as signed in their ceasefire agreement”. MIP said Naga people know that the GPRN/ NSCN has been telling invented stories in order to collect taxes from the people from time to time, for the sustenance of their campers. The MIP stated that GoI had repeatedly told Kehoi campers that “there will be only one solution for the IndoNaga political issue”. It pointed out that the ongoing Indo-Naga political talk with Government of India and NSCN representing Naga people is inclusive and final. Hundreds of cadres from the GPRN/NSCN have been switching sides and joining NSCN (I-M) to strengthen the ongoing

but it was displeased to learn that Mmhonlumo’s sacking was related with the PIL it filed. LH clarified that Mmhonlumo had not discussed the issue of anomalies of NP&NG 2012 Regulations and Rules with it nor was he in any way connected with the filing of PIL. LH demanded the chief minister to justify why he sacked Mmhonlumo since no reason was given when he was sacked. If the reason was due to the PIL, then LH said it failed to understand why the present DAN ministry was hell bent on having the PIL withdrawn. It pointed out that the Supreme Court had ruled that once a PIL was filed, it cannot be withdrawn till it reached logical conclusion. Therefore, LH asked why unnecessary efforts and resources should be spent to entrust people to convince it (LH) to withdraw PIL?. After experiencing pressure exerted on it through numerous agencies, entrusted by “unscrupulous authorities, to withdraw the PIL”; LH said this was due

Goswami resigned from the post as he wanted to start something on his own, said sources. The channel, however, is still showing teasers of Newshours with Arnab. It was also said that Goswami might join Fox News, the popular UK news organisation. However, Indianexpress. com could not verify the reports. Goswami started his career at The Telegraph in Kolkata. Further LH asserted that its PIL was not against any political party of in any way, undermined or hindered the interests of anyone be it Nagas or stakeholders, but only for the rights of landowners be it Lotha or any other. “PIL is purely for sustaining the provisions of Article 371A” maintained LH and questioned why would anyone be so keen to undo its initiative to safeguard Naga landowners “unless there is hidden agenda with vested interest?” LH also asked Metropolitan Oil and Gas Private Limited (MOGPL) why was it particularly targeting Wokha district only and not starting work in Peren where it was also issued permit for exploration and development works? Further, LH raised the following points and urged upon Naga intellectuals to analyse them and arrive at logical conclusion:

KOHIMA, NOV 1 (NPN): Government authorities used water cannon to disperse the SSA teachers who were staging sit-in protest at directorate of school education here on Tuesday. SSA teachers under the aegis of Nagaland SSA Teachers Association (NSSATA) 2010 & 2013 batches consisting of around 2600 teachers began their phase-II agitation against non-payment of salary and demanding fourpoint charter of demands. The water cannon was fired after the protestors attempted to prevent directorate staff from entering from another entry point since the main gate was gheraoed by the teachers and did not allow the staff to enter. It was learnt that aggrieved teachers did not give any prior information to the staffs that they would not be allowed to enter the office. The agitators refused many staffs to enter office even after displaying their identity card. After a daylong protest, the teachers said they have decided to intensify agitation on the second day by restricting the directorate staff to enter office, saying the state government could

The governor further called upon the people to change their perception towards women and daughters, who he said were often regarded as liabilities. He urged upon the wealthy people to come forward in helping out in various social services and also to the Nagas residing elsewhere, to come and help their people. “It is them who can make the state a better place and that they shouldn’t wait for someone else to do it on their behalf,” he added. During the event, the Governor inaugurated the college magazine ‘Pranab Vision’ while his wife, Kavita Achraya inaugurated the ‘Wall Magazine’. Earlier, Padmashree Sentila T Yanger was felici-

tated for her achievement. In her short speech, Sentila encouraged the women folks to work harder to achieve their goal, saying “their fight was not over yet”. She lamented that disparity between men and women still persisted in the society and opined that the state assembly clear the 33 percent reservation for women. She said that women were trapped in the patriarchy and that had been keeping them from coming out and realizing their full potential. Meanwhile, the programme was chaired by Themneingah Hanneng, introductory speech was made by PWC joint secretary Swami Chinmayanandajee Maharaj while the principal Uma Bhowmick delivered the welcome address. It may be mentioned here that since its inception in the year 1991, the college has produced more than 2,000 graduates so far.

According to action committee convener Huzeng, the state government could not offer concrete assurance except a verbal assurance that the teachers would receive their salaries soon. On their demand that salaries of SSA 2010-2013 teachers to be paid from nonplan revenue, the convenor said government responded that as long as SSA funding takes place, there was no provision from the state government that the salary of the CSS would be made

from non-plan. On the third demand to strictly adhere to the national mission (SSA) guidelines and funding procedure in order to avoid instalment lapses and delays in the payment of salaries, he said government has assured to try its best that such things did not happen in future. With regard to the last demand to pay salary regular from state fund and to retrieve during the release from the Centre, the convenor said the finance department maintained they did not have money in their account. Taking all those responses seriously, he said the aggrieved teachers have decided to continue agitation till demands were met. (More on p-7)

Total overhaul in education system needed: Acharya versities were luring youths with mere degrees instead of equipping them with skills. This he said has rather created more educated unemployed youths and termed it as “act of crime”. Such universities depend solely on government funds and lack productivity, resulting in students hunting for jobs desperately with some even going to the extent of paying bribes, he said. He highlighted Centre’s initiative under the leadership of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which had earmarked Rs 12,000 crore, to impart skill oriented education. The scheme, to be implemented in all the colleges (sixth semester), would equip graduating students to be independent once they pass out from their institutions. DIMAPUR, NOV 1 (NPN): Refuting GDRN/NNC (NA)’s claim that “both civil and army wing” was officially dissolved,” MIP NNC/GDRN (NA) Tuesday clarified that the statement was only to create confusion among the public. Laying foundation stone of the rail project in 2004 and covering mere 22 km of rail track construction work in 11 years are clear instants of Congress party’s agenda of drawing public sympathy without delivering justice, he alleged. While asserting a rapid progress in the construction work after the BJP led NDA government came to power two year back, he claimed that an additional distance of 33 km was completed within two years of the NDA government. H e c o nve ye d t h a t Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made it a point to ministries concerned for expediting projects and strive to complete them within the shortest possible time. While expressing scepticism on the state government’s commitment on the proposed extension of the rail project from Imphal till Moreh, he asserted that the state was yet to settle land acquisition disputes for the Tupul-Imphal sector of the project. The Centre has already sanctioned requisite fund for the Tupul-Imphal sector but controversy on land acquisition is worrisome, he added.

Itanagar, Nov 1 (PTI): Even as the heat and dust of electioneering for November 19 bye-election to Hayuliang Assembly seat is gaining momentum, the Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has alleged the NEDA government in the state of “deliberately” holding the resignation letter of the Congress candidate who wants to resign from a government post to contest the election. Public Health Engineering and Water Supply (PHE&WS) department chief engineer Lapalum Kri who, the official candidate of the Congress for the byepoll, has applied Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) but till date the state government is yet to give its approval, APCC president Padi Richo alleged. Richo said that Congress high command has approved of Kri’s candidature and accordingly he had applied for VRS on September 5 last requesting the state government to accept it with effect from September 30. “Surprisingly, the state government is yet to approve of Kri’s VRS request, in spite of getting all the clearances, including vigilance. The Union minister, who arrived at Imphal on Monday on his two-day visit in the state, flew back to New Delhi on Tuesday. During his visit, he inspected the progress of the railway line construction in Tamenglong district. Addressing a news conference before leaving Imphal today, he said that with 57.8 per cent of the Jiribam-Tupul section already completed, the remaining work was being targeted for completion within 2018. “As the rail track distance from Tupul to Imphal is only 27 km it is inevitable that Manipur will be technically linked by rail route in a little over two years”, Rajen said. Rajen said the Centre held in high esteem the role played by Rani Gaidinliu in India’s freedom movement and was keen to name some important bridges or tunnels after the legendary figure. However, he assured to consult people of Manipur before any decision was finalised on naming the project structures. The Rural Development Ministry has also cleared about Rs 12,581 crore outstanding of the last year. For smooth operations of the programme this year, the ministry has sought additional Rs 10,000 crore over and above the budgetary allocation, the source added. According to sources, the demand for work is higher this year as there are some regions which are still drought affected. MNREGA, which was the flagship scheme introduced under the previous Congress-led UPA government, is a demanddriven wage employment programme. Not less than 100 days of employment are provided to registered workers upon receipt of their demand. Congress has alleged that the scheme was being stifled by the NDA government, which denied the charge. MNREGA provides a supplementary means of livelihood for the rural people, primarily during the lean periods and is not a substitute for all other employment opportunities.

SIMI encounter: NHRC notice to MP govt, DGP NEW DELHI/BHOPAL, NOV 1 (PTI): The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to Madhya Pradesh government, police and prison authorities over the killing of eight SIMI activists in an alleged encounter after they had fled from a jail in Bhopal. The Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report on the case and observed that it has always been “concerned” about deaths in police and judicial custody as well as in police action. The NHRC has issued notices to the state’s Chief Secretary, Director General of Police and the Director General and Inspector General of state prison department, and sought detailed reports in six weeks. Eight SIMI activists pulled off a daring prison break and escaped in the wee hours yesterday after killing a security guard at the Bhopal Central Jail. Within hours, they were hunted down and killed in an alleged police encounter on the city outskirts. The Commission has always been “concerned about the deaths in police and judicial custody as well as in police action. Specific guidelines have also been issued by it, which have been conveyed to all the States/ UTs for compliance in the matters of encounter,” the NHRC said in a statement today. “Reportedly, the under trial prisoners escaped the jail after killing a guard. Three of these under trial prisoners had escaped from the Khandwa jail three years back and were nabbed again in the state of Odisha, this year. The under trial were

Voters have right to know edn qualification of candidates: SC NEW DELHI, NOV 1 (PTI): Voters have a fundamental right to know the academic qualification of a candidate and any false declaration on this count can warrant rejection of nomination papers, the Supreme Court has held. “Every voter has a fundamental right to know about the educational qualification of a candidate. It is also clear from the provisions of the Act, Rules and Form 26 that there is a duty cast on the candidates to give correct information about their educational qualifications,” a bench comprising Justices A.R. Dave and L Nageswara Rao said. The apex court also ruled that if there are only two candidates in the fray and it is proved that the returned candidate’s nomination papers have been “improperly accepted”, then the one who lost the poll does not need to produce proof that the election has been materially affected. The verdict came on two cross appeals filed by Mairembam Prithviraj

alias Prithviraj Singh and Pukhrem Sharatchandra Singh against each other challenging the judgment of the High Court of Manipur. The High Court had declared as “void” the election of Prithviraj, who had contested the 2012 polls on a Nationalist Congress Party ticket against Congress nominee Sharatchandra from Moirang Assembly seat in Manipur. It was alleged that Prithviraj, in his nomination papers, had said he was an MBA, which was found to be incorrect. Upholding the High Court verdict, Justice Rao, writing the verdict for the apex court bench, said it was not “in dispute that the Appellant did not study MBA in Mysore University” and the plea that it was a “clerical error” cannot be accepted. “The contention of the Appellant that the declaration relating to his educational qualification in the affidavit is a clerical error cannot be accepted. It is not an error committed once. Since 2008, the Appellant

LH backs Mmhonlumo

(From p-1) LH pointed that as per media reports, Mmhonlumo was appointed as parliamentary secretary on April 27, 2015 in order to pressurise it (LH) to withdraw PIL. LH said it was ridiculous since it filed the PIL on October 3, 2015 and so how could Mmhonlumo commit himself to withdraw the PIL which had not been filed at that time (April) five months after his induction? LH also asked whether it was being taken as a commodity for marketing by making numerous agencies to pursue it to withdraw the PIL? LH also asked if the sacking of Mmhonlumo was a “visionary step” so that Lothas can be suppressed in border issues without him,who had held the portfolio as parliamentary secretary?

was making the statement that he has an MBA degree. The information provided by him in the affidavit filed in Form 26 would amount to a false declaration. The said false declaration cannot be said to be a defect which is not substantial...,” the bench said. The bench also dealt in detail the legal question whether it was necessary to “plead and prove that

the result was materially affected when the nomination of the returned candidate was found to have been improperly accepted, more so, when there are only two candidates contesting the election.” “There is no dispute that an election cannot be set aside on the ground of improper acceptance of any nomination without a pleading and proof that the

result of the returned candidate was materially affected. “The point to be considered is whether the law as laid down by this Court relating to the pleading and proof of the fact of the result of the returned candidate being materially affected, applies to a case where the nomination of the returned candidate is declared to have been improperly accepted,” it said.

More questions cropped up today on the killing of eight SIMI men in Bhopal even as the police asserted that it was a genuine encounter and Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and other BJP leaders decried attempts to “politicise and communalise” the incident. Congress leader Digvijay Singh led the opposition charge saying that the NIA probe should be court-monitored and called for a separate judicial probe into “why only undertrial activists of SIMI and Muslims were involved in jailbreaks” in Madhya Pradesh. BSP chief Mayawati, CPI(M) and RJD also made a strong pitch for a judicial probe into the encounter while casting aspersions on the official version in view of the “evidence” that has appeared so far including purported video clips. “What is the reason that SIMI activists, who are Muslims involved in jailbreaks and not Hindu prisoners. Earlier it happened in Khandwa jail and now Bhopal, why Muslims are only involved and not Hindus in jailbreaks,” Digvijay Singh said. Alleging that these were “cold-blooded” murders, lawyer of the SIMI activists Parvez Alam said their families have decided to approach the Madhya Pradesh High Court seeking a CBI probe. “The families of the deceased have come to me and are weeping inconsolably for justice. We are going to move the MP High Court for a CBI probe into the entire incident,” he said. “The TV grabs show police and ATS firing. There is no evidence that the accused fired. This is a fake encounter and (these are) cold blooded murders,” he claimed and contested the claims by police that the inmates had escaped from the jail and were armed. However, Inspector General Yogesh Choudhary remained firm on the police version and said it was a genuine encounter. He added that they will probe

the authenticity of the videos or other “evidence”. “I have not seen the videos. If there are any video or other evidence, their veracity as well as their usage would be taken into consideration. “I would like to reiterate that we have recovered four firearms and three sharp weapons from these people. We have recovered two 315 bore countrymade pistols and two 12 bore ‘Kattas’ from which around six rounds were fired. He said police will probe whether the SIMI men got some external help. “Between 2 and 3 AM and at 10:3011:30 AM when the actual confrontation took place, the main point and the road map of investigation is that what happened in between and from where did they get help. Did they get any external help or they had something on their own is one of the main points of investigation,” he said. “I am very clear that the incident as I have depicted has happened the way it has happened. Three of our men had injuries from sharp weapons,” he said. Slamming the critics, Chouhan and Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu alleged that some leaders and parties were playing “dirty politics” and attempting to communalise the issue which dealt with the country’s security. Singh reminded that the slain men were “dreaded terrorists” who could have wreaked devastation after fleeing the prison. Government and BJP said while the facts will come out clearly after the probe, doubts should not be raised on the action of security and armed forces as it lowers their morale even as they called upon everyone to speak in one voice on issues of national security. The eight SIMI activists were killed in an alleged encounter with police on the outskirts of Bhopal hours after they escaped from the high-security Central jail there killing a security guard yesterday.

Nagaland Post Vol. XXVI NO. 326 Dimapur, wednesday, November 2, 2016

From parrot to poodle

F

ormer Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, received a big reprieve when a special CBI Court acquitted him along with his two sons, son-in-law and nine others in a corruption case pertaining to the period 2008-11 and thus , giving a boost to the political fortunes of the BJP leader ahead of 2018 Assembly polls. The corruption case related to illegal mining in Bellary that allegedly involved a bribery amount of Rs 40 crore. The CBI had filed a chargesheet in October 2015 against Yeddyurappa, his sons B Y Raghavendra and B Y Vijayendra and sonin-law Sohan Kumar, a Bellary-based private steel company and a Shimoga based Trust run by the family of Yeddyurappa for alleged abuse of official position and corruption. The case also saw Yeddyurappa spend about three weeks in jail in October 2011 in connection with the case before he was granted bail. The verdict has given an impetus to Yeddyurappa, who was appointed state BJP chief in April this year ahead of the assembly elections due in 2018. The Congress hit out at the CBI for doing the bidding of the union home ministry and described the agency as the latter’s “performing poodle.” The way the case was thrown out by the lower court had infuriated Congress party especially as the state is to go to the polls in 2018 and the verdict having taking the wind off the sails of the party. Party spokesman Manish Tewari said it was clearly and open and shut case with no doubts about the involvement of Yeddyurappa and his kith and kin. He also hit out at the CBI for letting the accused persons free through an inept handling of the case, which provided the court with a justification to throw it out. Tewari also said the “caged parrot” which was used to describe the CBI by the Supreme Court has today become a “pet performing poodle” of the central government. He expressed apprehension that the CBI would not even appeal against the decision. The particular case has again brought the CBI under scanner and also ironically under the BJP regime in the centre. The agency has always been at the receiving end of political parties. When in opposition, politicians slam it but once in power and able to mis-use it, the then CBI becomes either a caged parrot or a pet poodle. The BJP used to slam the CBI when in opposition and at times, used very harsh terms. The Congress failed to counter charges and the UPA was vilified and defamed by the opposition and the media. The inability or disinclination or unpreparedness of the Congress in meeting the attacks from the opposition had also led to a perception of it being totally corrupt. Even the Supreme Court had passed strictures on the Manmohan Singh government for using the CBI to close cases of corruption on politicians. Every party, when in opposition, demands that the CBI should be made independent but this is conveniently forgotten when they come to power. An independent CBI can only be achieved if all have a political will. Appointment of CBI director should be through a collegium, including the prime minister, the home minister, Leader of the Opposition, the Lokpal, the CVC and Chief Justice of India.

DailyDevotion “You Are Not Your Own” Do you not know that…you are not your own? —1 Corinthians 6:19 There is no such thing as a private life, or a place to hide in this world, for a man or woman who is intimately aware of and shares in the sufferings of Jesus Christ. God divides the private life of His saints and makes it a highway for the world on one hand and for Himself on the other. No human being can stand that unless he is identified with Jesus Christ. We are not sanctified for ourselves. We are called into intimacy with the gospel, and things happen that appear to have nothing to do with us. But God is getting us into fellowship with Himself. Let Him have His way. If you refuse, you will be of no value to God in His redemptive work in the world, but will be a hindrance and a stumbling block. The first thing God does is get us grounded on strong reality and truth. He does this until our cares for ourselves individually have been brought into submission to His way for the purpose of His redemption. Why shouldn’t we experience heartbreak? Through those doorways God is opening up ways of fellowship with His Son. Most of us collapse at the first grip of pain. We sit down at the door of God’s purpose and enter a slow death through self-pity. And all the so-called Christian sympathy of others helps us to our deathbed. But God will not. He comes with the grip of the pierced hand of His Son, as if to say, “Enter into fellowship with Me; arise and shine.” If God can accomplish His purposes in this world through a broken heart, then why not thank Him for breaking yours?

T

he two issues, namely, Gaidinliu’s memorial hall in Kohima and Rongmei recognition as a tribe in Nagaland have been dominating the controversial arena emanating substantial amount of communal aroma ever since so introduced by DAN Govt. Both the issues are likely to continue its occupation of the controversially prominent positions as both for and against are relentless. Both the issues have deep rooted religious and political agenda backed by political authority in hobnob with obvious potent armed group. The street fighters for the agenda are few as I can note those individuals like Gwanphun Gangmei, Jagdamba Mall, the Governor B.P. Acharya and the recent entrant Kanpatlung Pamei, and yet they have the zest and force with the support of incendiary elements. To those who are ignorant or insensitive to common interests may accuse that few of us boldly opposing the agenda are making mountains out of anthills, and yet these two issues have immense socio-religious and political ramifications and therefore ignoring such impositions will have fatal implications on the future of Nagaland. The Gaidinliu issue is the religious agenda of Hinduism which is being promoted by RSS agents under the advantage of BJP’s rule in the country. Many tend to ignore the signs of danger elicited earlier on how the elements of RSS used to attempt to penetrate their tentacles into Naga Christian society. During early 1990s, the RSS picked up few leaders of the animism remnants from Chizami area and took those ignorant few to visit some Hindu temples in the country. The treatment was intended to brainwash those simple animists that Hinduism has common background with Naga animism. Believing that establishment of a Hindu school in the area would have faster penetration of Hinduism into Christian community, an RCC building was erected in the area, and a school began to run in that building. Reasons known better to strange and ghost sponsors, the school lived its life faster than expected. The association of

those animists and Hindu activists ended too perhaps along with the closure of the school. The Naga woman Gaidinliu from Manipur is found to be the better option for RSS, VHP and Bajrang Dal (the BJP pillars) to propel the Hinduism agenda aiming at Nagaland. In their venture, progress of penetrations have been made particularly in two areas as I know. The Heraka movement is intensified in Peren area and Ms. Yahoi Konyak from Wangti Village has successfully launched the same movement in Chen area of Mon District. Reportedly known that not less than 4 Heraka following Villages have been established bordering Myanmar. The two prominent traits of the followers of Heraka in Chen area are the men folks without haircut and restriction of pork eating by both sexes. “Christianity is a faith-cult of following Christ, the Jewish socioreligious reformer.” “Basically, Heraka’s faith is the worship of the almighty Holy God. It is the instinct faith of the Nagas even during the age of Naga animism like that of the Judaism of Old Testament” stated by Gwangphun Gangmei under the caption ‘Naga Chrsitianity and Heraka faith: Theological perspective in view’ as appeared in Eastern Mirror in May 2016. I would have reacted to this assertion at that time, but I gave chance to particularly Naga theologians who can give authentic reaction based on Bible to such misconception and distortion. None bothered as either one failed to notice the article due to negligence or they preferred to remain neutral or suffering from phobia. I, for one, do not accept the interpretation of Gwangphun that Christianity is a ‘cult’. Christianity is the faith of a person who is convicted by the Holy Spirit of God to believe in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, His life, His death and His resurrection. Jesus Christ is the only Son of the living God Jehovah, the Creator of the universe. God Jehovah is the only Holy God and beside Him there is none who is holy. Christian faith is the believe in the Trinity, the Father God, the Son God and the

Holy Spirit. ‘Herakaism (believers of the God of Heaven) is the endearing reformed faith of the Zeliangrong Nagas in particular’ claimed Gwangphun. Yet, I will insist that the Heraka god is not holy. Well, Gwangphun tried his best to draw inflated similarities between Christianity and Heraka cult but it can never be proved since Christianity is never a cult whereas Heraka is definitely a cult. I am also not convinced that animism is akin to Heraka. Fortunately, just on time, Kanpatlung Pamei with cut throat punctured the assertions of Gwangphun by spilling the beans. Kanpatlung, with ease, confirmed that Heraka cult founded by Jadonang and Gaidinliu is intrinsically linked to Hinduism. He said, “Hindu regards her (Gaidinliu) and worshipped her as one of the goddesses” in his article appeared in Eastern Mirror on 23rd Oct. 2016. ...”she (Gaidinliu) was believed to be an incarnation of Charachamdinliu-the daughter of Lord Vishnu, the supreme godhead”. “She was believed to be an incarnation of goddess Durga by some Indian devotees.” In the lengthy article, Kanpatlung cited several instances of how Gaidinliu was venerated by RSS, VHP and Bajrang Dal stalwarts and how she and her cult followers have been associating with the Hinduism organisations all through these years. Kanpatlung quoted several findings of Jagdamba Mall who once wrote ‘nothing noble about the Nobel (Prize) awarded to Mother Teresa’ in his undermining the internationally renowned philanthropist who was posthumously declared Saint by Vatican recently and which act was officially acknowledged by Union Govt. led by BJP. The interception of Kanpatlung Pamei has therefore put the confusion doctored by Gwangphun Gangmei that there was kinship between animism and Heraka or between Christianity and Heraka to rest. I also found that Kanpatlung Pamei was so agitated with the grand elderly citizen in the person of Mr. Thepfulhouvi Solo in regard to latter’s exposures of the crimes and misdemeanours committed

by Gaidinliu and her Herakaians. Despite of the personal attack on the antecedents, Mr. Thepfulhuovi coolly and confidently reacted to Kanpatlung as to how he found the evidences of his disclosures about Gaidinliu from written records and living testimonies. Can anyone undo the historical records? Initially, the Governor of Nagaland B.P. Acharya considered his profession as RSS pracharak to be more important to his holding the gubernatorial post. The 15 minutes NLA session is going down to the annals of NLA history, so also the zealous pracharak Governor who ended his Assembly address with ‘Bharat Mata ki jay’ and the printing of Kohima Raj Bhavan’s Call at Home program with Bharat Mata picture on it are the few very unexpected and un-Governor’s Hindusim and RSS filled actions which drew flak from NGOs and individuals that made him sober today with a grudge in his lecture at Mayapur temple, West Bengal. This is how Hinduism activists are making effusive attempts to penetrate into Nagaland with its one nation one religion agenda. Whereas, Rongmei tribal recognition is the grand political agenda of the combined force of NPF DAN and Nagas (may not be all) from Manipur. The overwhelming rejections of Rongmei recognition by the tribal bodies of Nagaland miserably failed to prick the mind of NPF led DAN Govt., so the issue will probably remain unresolved till 2018. I wish anyone who volunteers to participate in the debate on this topic, better prepare one’s lesson in conformity with factual records so that we are not led to have our time wasted ruminating as if chewing the cud as one Temjen Ao, Researcher, Hyderabad University wants to reopen the chapter as appeared on 1.11.2016. Nevertheless, I feel that Nagas of Nagaland should be left alone without any more attempt of those individuals or group to impose its agenda on Nagaland as it is tired of carrying extra baggage all through these years. Enough is enough. Z. Lohe

NC/GDRN (NA) under the dynamic and humble leadership of Kimukam the President and Hetoi Chophi Ato Kilonser. Apropos to the news item ‘welcoming the home comers’ publish in the local daily on 1st Nov 2016 by the breakaway group with leader Kumchu and Hamping zealing. The following points are here by made for the public clarification:1. It is good to hear that breakaway group finally gave up their immature political crises with the President of NNC/GDRN (NA) and have joint with NSCN (IM). 2. As the NNC/GDRN (NA) do not believe in violence outcome but is endeavored to serve the Naga Nation through cooperation and mutual dialogue. Whatever decision the breakaway group has taken is their own decision and there is no hurt feeling against them. 3. The NNC/GDRN (NA) does not have any ill feeling towards anybody in our venture to the national cause but we firmly believe in nonviolence policy of achieving our common goal. Hence, forgiven even the rouge elements who attempted to kill our respectable and loved president Kimukam. 4. The NNC/GDRN (NA) shall remain alive till our long cherished goal is achieved and appeal to all stakeholders not to confuse with the news of the breakaway group statement which read as ‘NNC/ GDRN (NA) shall no longer exist and that it has been officially dissolved’ is uncalled statement. It does not arise at all. It is the statement they made only to confuse the public and therefore the MIP would like to make it clear that the NNC/GDRN (NA) is quite safe under the leadership of its President Kiumkam and will keep striving for the betterment of the Nagas under the banner of NNC/GDRN (NA). Response to Iralu’s ‘reply to Silverstein’

n an article by me titled, “Life versus truth and justice,” appearing in The Morung Express on October 12, 2016 and in the Nagaland Post on October 13, 2016, I stated, early in the article, “I consider Kaka Iralu a friend..... [W]hen we met near the end of June, 2016, at The Hotel Vivor in Kohima, I found him to be a warm, caring, and openminded man, a man who obviously loved his fellow Nagas very much.” I now have serious doubts about what I said in the last clause of the above sentence, that Iralu “obviously loved his fellow Nagas very much.” In the face of my allegation, which he has never denied, that, whether the Nagas deserve a separate sovereign nation or not, the government of India (GoI) will never agree to such a nation, he writes article after article using words like the ones he closed with in the article I am now responding to: Political suppression with economic gifts by India is what is destroying Nagaland today. Here, I will fight the political suppression rather than fight to have a lion’s share of the economic gifts. [Iralu is referring to my pointing out that most Nagas have taken advantage of the “gifts” offered under the Indian constitution and statutes to a “scheduled tribe.”] As far as I am concerned, only a TOTALLY UNPATRIOTIC MAN with no sense for the dignity of his national and geographical identity would WALLOW in the enemy’s gifts of seductions to subjugate him. I will not collaborate with the enemy, when the enemy has NULLIFIED MY VERY RIGHT TO LIFE, FREEDOM AND

LIBERTY even within the territories of my own country. [My caps – that is, my emphasis.] Earlier in his article he states, “...I am not interested in my enemy’s gifts of even the whole state with its entire infrastructure WHICH HAS LULLED MOST NAGAS TO SLEEP FOR OVER SIX DECADES. For me, this state is just a farce and a shadow of the real image of a truly independent country.” (My emphasis, again.) And yet in an article I wrote that appeared in The Morung Express on October 27, 2016, titled, “Reply to Kaka Iralu’s ‘The desecration of political truths and justice in Nagaland’,” he, over the same lunch that I mentioned in my opening paragraph, agreed with me, that Nagaland, were it to ever become a separate sovereign nation, would “simply be a poor corrupt nation instead of a poor corrupt state.” The reason he agreed with me when I stated that is because he had just informed me that corruption was such an intimate and integral part of Naga society that it could never be eradicated. Now it is time to focus on what all of the above means, putting Iralu’s words together, words that are contradictory and incoherent. He shows complete contempt for all the Nagas who “wallow in the enemy’s gifts....” Is it “wallowing” to want your children to have a good education and a good job? Are all the individuals who accept these things “totally unpatriotic”? That is what he says. He shows no empathy for all the men and women who want their families to have all the benefits that many of them never had. He puts his principles before his

fellow Nagas. He does not deny that I am right in saying that the GoI will never allow the Nagas a sovereign nation. He in effect states that, whatever may happen, they are “unpatriotic” fools if they do not accept his priority of a sovereign nation over the “gifts” of education and jobs, even over life itself. I have stated, in previous articles, that to continue to push for a sovereign nation will lead to the destruction of the Naga people. I will not repeat all the reasons for that, but Iralu has not denied that I am right. What is clear is, he rather be dead than under the Indian constitution, dead rather than compromise. That’s all fine and good for HIM, but he has made it clear that if he has to drag all Nagas to their deaths for his goal of a sovereign nation, that is fine with him. After all, to do otherwise would concede that it is all right if the “enemy has nullified my very right to life, freedom and liberty ….” Iralu is not interested in asking “most Nagas” whether they view their present situation as one in which the GoI is depriving them of their “very right to life, freedom and liberty,” and he will NEVER ask them, because he knows that they may disagree with him. They may in fact agree with me that the loss of life and liberty in the Naga communities of Nagaland, Manipur, and elsewhere is more the fault of the corrupt and violent NSCN-IM and their corrupt and cowardly partners in the state assemblies and elsewhere than the GoI. Remember, Iralu agreed with me that a free and sovereign Naga nation would just be a poor and

corrupt Naga nation instead of a poor and corrupt Naga state. And those who are corrupt and violent now would still be the same ones who bleed the Naga people of their lifeblood in a new Naga nation. I recommend to Iralu and all who read this article that they read, “Bitter Wormwood,” by a Naga writer, Easterine Kire. It is an excellent novel about the Naga relationship with the Indian soldiers and the terrible conflicts and atrocities over the decades. But the most significant thing in the book to me is her Appendix V, a real speech given by a

namesake of Kaka Iralu, Niketu Iralu. Kire has a note to the speech, titled, “Historical Rights of the Nagas and their Quest for Integration,” in which she says, “The best analysis of the struggle: author[.]” May the wisdom of Niketu Iralu’s words be passed on to my friend Kaka Iralu and to all others who read them. Here they are: ....Delhi is in no position at all to talk on sovereignty, not because the Naga case is wrong or legally and politically invalid, but because India is too young a democracy still in a chaotic state of formation to handle

the issue. And Nagas have done virtually nothing to speak to the minds and hearts of the Indian people whose understanding alone can solve the problem. [Page 262.] If Nagas are prepared to negotiate for something other than sovereignty despite the full legal legitimacy of their claim for it, because they understood India’s difficulty on the issue, it should be not too difficult for Delhi to accept what Nagas mean by “honourable, acceptable settlement.” [Page 264.] Robert A. The government & the Nagaland ssa teachers

Sir,

This is viewed and explained from my own perspective. The Government is fully geared up to reply to the aggrieved SSA Teachers even before they stage a protest therefore, no positive outcome of today’s agitation . The SSA Teachers on the other hand, fully prepared to negotiate the Government for their rightful claim. The action of the Government trying to disperse the peaceful gathering is a direct insult to the Indian Democratic system and the Constitution [Article (1) (a) & (b)]. The esteem Government should and must act as a father to all populace and bring amicable solution rather they acted as an anti-social by dispersing the peaceful gathered crowd using unhygienic water. As seen from my perspective I appreciate the peaceful agitation by SSA Teachers. Their demands are genuine. Their demands are true. This is a generation where all items in the mart have shoot-up tremendously and it is very hardening that the Government cannot repay the wages of the sincere teachers discharging their duties; when fund sharing pattern of CSS (Centrally Sponsored Scheme) is 90:10 i.e., 90% by Centre and 10% by State Government in NE states. On the contrary, the Government’s firm and consistent assertion on teachers by adhering “NO WORK, NO PAY” appears ludicrous and immature decision, when they are entirely aware who are seriously affected by long pending salaries. If the Government cannot feed the recruited teachers they should have never advertised the posts in the first place. I can understand the pain of the aggrieved teachers as I once being the victim of this and had the first-hand experience of myriad suffering and struggle waiting my long unpaid salaries. If the agitation prolongs all the Government schools run by these SSA teachers will be drastically affected. And as the concerned citizen I appeal the high Government to disburse long pending salaries and let teachers perform their duties and uplift the children and society at large. Concerned Individual. Angelo Pfithu, Meluri Town

(From p-1) Concerned Citizens of Nagaland (CCN) has expressed “shock” at use of water cannon on SSA teachers who were “peacefully staging a protest” outside the directorate of school education at Kohima on Tuesday. In a press release, media cell, CCN, stated that it was “thoroughly appalled” at the manner in which the protest was handled by spraying water upon the aggrieved teachers in the chilly Kohima weather. “The teachers are not protesting for fun. They are protesting to demand their God-given right of being paid their pending salaries which they have worked hard for,” CCN said. Further, CCN questioned the government authorities whether they would be able to function normally if they were to be deprived of their salaries for even a month. “Would the authorities then realise that their own medicine tastes bitter?” it asked. CCN also queried if the authorities even cared for the morale of the teachers and the welfare of the children who were being deprived their basic right to education as guaranteed by the Constitution? “This is tantamount to anti-Constitutional on the part of the Government,” it maintained. The concerned citizens said using water cannon on aggrieved protestors has only tainted the

incident. They stated that every citizens of the society have the right to demand their due share for their contribution to the society. It therefore, reminded the government that when it has imposed “no work no pay”, the stakeholders also have the right to counter the government “no pay no work”. However, AKMWP said the SSA teachers were being deprived of their sacrifices and their patience ran out since they have been struggling since last six months without salary. AKMWP also questioned the ministers and bureaucrats whether they would realize the bitterness if they were denied of their salaries and perks just for a month? And what it public took enough courage to shoot our law makers with water cannons? In this regard, AKMWP asked the government to realize the problems faced by the teachers. It also hit back at the state government for not taking the issue seriously. Instead, AKMWP said that when the debt of the teachers have increased many fold through borrowing from other means for their survival, the Nagaland legislative met for only 15 minutes and declared the assembly sine die. Therefore, AKMWP appealed to the government to deliver justice to the aggrieved teachers.

sacred ideals of democracy, adding that one cannot help but “surmise that the very government has turned anti-democratic by attempting to silence the genuine cries of suffering employees through forceful suppression.” Asserting that the government action was akin to dictatorial style of functioning, the CCN said it vehemently condemned the actions of the government, which it alleged has become “highly intolerant towards any voice of dissent.” CCN also termed as “unfortunate” that the government was living in “selective dreams” where it fantasises that everything was functioning normally but in reality, there was dissent everywhere “which can be gauged from the multiple news reports appearing in the local newspapers on a daily basis.” The concerned citizens said it was high time for the government to wake up to the miseries of the common people and do their job for which they were elected. AKMWP: Association of Kohima Municipal Wards Panchayat (AKMWP) in a condemnation note said that the action of the government using its machineries on the teachers has threatened and deprived the fabric of the democracy. (From p-1) peace talks, after realizing the truth that they have reach a dead end, MIP said. In this regard, MIP said Mulatonu, in order to further prevent emptying their camps, has come out with a better idea of befooling the Nagas by stating that political talks with GoI would begin by March 2017. MIP noted that much before March 2017, the IndoNaga political talks would have resulted to a final solution and that “the question of even the existence of the GPRN/NSCN would not arise by then”. Stating that it was good to dream within the ambit of possibilities, MIP wondered whether any would believe in his sound mind that government of India will have “political talks with non-existence or dissolve organization?” MIP urged upon “Nagas not become easy victims of political gimmicks of some jokers”. “Since the NSCN is in the talks representing the Nagas, we are the one who knows the actual position and therefore urged our people to be patient and supportive to the on-going political talks which will usher in final solution that is inclusive, honorable and acceptable to both the parties that we assured,” MIP asserted.

SKK: All Sumi Students Union (SKK) in a press note by president Ninoto Awomi and gen. secretary Vikai Yepthomi has also appealed the government for early release of teachers salary, stating that teachers sacrificing for 6 to 9 months without salary cannot be taken for granted determining the duty performed by the teachers. SKK strongly reminded the government that the academic session which was at the end year should be focussed seriously without any delayed tactics. SKK also asserted that any untoward incident prevailing within due failure of the government, the sole responsibility would be shouldered by the concern department and the govt. KSON: KSON has extended solidarity to NSSATA on current imbroglio with the state govt over the non-release of salary and other service conditions. KSON president, Paotinsei Khongsai appealed the government and NSSATA to come to a logical conclusion and agreement at the earliest so that the welfare of the teachers and students community at large was not put at stake.

all the pending salaries of the NSSATA teachers has left many govt. schools in the district with a single teacher or two, hampering thousands of students career. USSC expressed displeasure over the lukewarm attitude of the government when there was lot of hue and cry from the teachers, asserting that the conference cannot be a mute spectator when thousands of students across the district are stagnated. USSC urged the state government to release all the pending salaries at the earliest so that all the aggrieved teachers report to their respective postings and perform their duty normally. It further cautioned that in the event of the same trend in future the conference would be compelled to take its course of action. ANSTA Zunheboto: All Nagaland School Teachers’ Association Zunheboto unit in a press note by president Y. Shikato Sumi and general secretary, Kivika Zhimomi expressed displeasure at the casual manner in which the government was treating some section of its members (Teachers) by not releasing their salaries for many months and feels it as a disgrace on the part of the government toward the people responsible for one of the most important roles in the society. Association therefore, appealed the concerned authority to expedite in every possible manner in releasing the salaries to the aggrieved teachers at the

co-convener, M. James Tungoe stated that the concerned authorities were not only harassing the teachers and students alone but also the entire future generation of the society. It stated that when it came to quality education, the government wanted the best qualified teachers in the state with B.Ed and all DIET Exams passed, whereas in reality the qualified best teachers were not being paid their due. ACAUT Wokha unit once more appeal to the government to justify their stand and to release all their pending salaries at the earliest. Organisations appeal for teachers’ pending salary

DIMAPUR: Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has drawn the attention of the chief secretary to the matter of non payment of salary to SSA and Hindi teachers (CSS). In a representation to the chief secretary, the NSF editor Miiphato Nyuthe and secretary education, Imtiyapang pointed out that teachers under SSA scheme and Hindi teachers (CSS) had been working without salary for the pass several months, in spite of appeals and representations to the government and concern department. It stated that in spite of teaching community selflessly rendering their services for quality education and improvement of human resources, they were not being paid and rather made to face untold hardship. In this regard, NSF has urged upon the chief secretary to take up the matter with utmost seriousness and address the matter at the earliest. It cautioned that failure would entail NSF to resort to its own course of action. ACAUT Wokha unit: ACAUT Wokha unit while extending its support to the ongoing SSA/Hindi teachers in their fight against the government’s apathy and arrogance has questioned the government as to delay in release of pending salary to the aggrieved teaching community. An output sub-index, which measures overall production, was at 57.2 in October, the highest since December 2012, and up sharply from 53.3 in September. The acceleration in output came after a surge in new orders, a sub-index measuring both domestic and external demand, which mirrored the main PMI and rose to its highest since December 2014. Bengaluru, Nov 1 (Agencies): Indian factory activity expanded at its fastest pace in almost two years in October, boosted by a surge in output and new orders, but it came alongside a sharp rise in input costs and some pass on to end-consumers, a survey showed. Tuesday`s data should help reinforce views Asia`s third largest economy is growing at a robust pace, but it could also point to risks of inflation gathering steam and crimping the Reserve Bank of India`s room to ease policy further. The Nikkei/Markit Manufacturing Purchasing Managers` Index shot up to 54.4 in October, a 22 month high, from September`s 52.1, marking the biggest monthly jump in almost five years. Naidu also said that the legislation will help regulate the real estate sector and there will be no scope for exploitation and cheating. “All these rules have been notified and states will also make their rules. We will try to be more consumer friendly. There will be no scope for exploitation and cheating,” said Naidu. “The act is really going to help us regulate the real estate sector, to improve the sector and also help the helpless consumers who have been harassed so far,” he added.

confidence,” Assocham President Sunil Kanoria said. He said unlike the previous surveys, the latest round indicates a slight uptick even with regard to capacity utilisation going forward and the order book. However, generation of new employment and improvement in wages is still some distance away. The confidence was quite pronounced at the level of individual firms’ level, as about 89 per cent of the respondents expressed optimism about better days ahead. The majority (55.6 per cent) of the respondents feel that there is an increase in sales volume during September quarter and also expect more sales during October-December 2016. “The power to increase price on the part of producers and service providers would remain constrained till there is some more improvement in the consumer demand,” Kanoria said.

industry. As majority (55.6 per cent) of respondents believe that employment condition will not improve in the coming days. Besides, 38.9 per cent of the respondents feel that their profits may not change in the short term, October to December. The second best driver for the optimistic outlook are effective policy reforms followed by a stable foreign exchange rate of the Indian currency despite global head winds like uncertainty on account of the Federal Reserve’s next policy move and the most bitterly fought US Presidential elections. While a big chunk of Bizcon Survey participants felt the present economic situation appears to be in a better shape than the previous six months on several parameters, the optimism is more pronounced for the second half of 2016-17. “Good thing is, there is a clear turnaround in business confidence, which holds the key to new investment and consumer

New Delhi, Nov 1 (PTI): Indian economy is expected to fare better in the second half of the current fiscal backed by uptick in sales and improved capacity utilisation, though fresh investments and new jobs creation may be a concern going forward, according to an Assocham report. Besides, an increased spending on infrastructure development, largely by the government, is seen as the most important driver for a turnaround in the economic outlook for the period between October and March this fiscal, it added. Over 66 per cent respondents polled in the Assocham Bizcon Survey expected improved sales and capacity utilisation during the second half of the fiscal, but remained uncertain on fresh investments coming in. However, in the short horizon, the survey indicates that there will not be any change in the employment scenario in the

Pakistan SC orders probe against PM Nawaz Sharif

ISLAMABAD, NOV 1 (Agencies/IANS): In a setback for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif+ , the Pakistan’s Supreme Court+ on Tuesday ordered a probe into the Panama papers scandal involving corruption allegations against the family of the beleaguered premier. The larger fivemember bench headed by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali and comprising Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, Justice Amir Hani Muslim, Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Ijazul Ahsan conducted the hearing in presence of several cabinet ministers, lawyers of petitioners, senior PTI leaders and media. The apex court said it was ready to appoint a probe commission headed by a judge and armed with powers of the Supreme Court. The court also ordered the government and petitioners to present their Terms of Reference (ToR) for the probe panel. It court will decide to harmonize the ToR if the parties could not come up with the agreed set of ToR. Before its adjournment till Thursday, the court also expressed willingness to hold hearings on a daily basis. Reacting to the court’s ruling, Imran Khan+ said the planned anti-government rally will now be marked as

a day of thanksgiving in Islamabad. Addressing a press conference outside Bani Gala, Khan thanked those who were part of his struggle against corruption. “Go home and rest,” Khan told supporters, “You have to return to Islamabad tomorrow to celebrate thanksgiving at Parade Ground.” “I am elated that the investigation into Nawaz Sharif ’s (alleged corruption) will begin day after tomorrow.” PTI had announced the rally in Islamabad to force Sharif to resign for a fair probe into the scandal. According to the Panama Papers, three of Sharif ’s four children - Maryam, Hasan and Hussain were owners of offshore companies and “were owners or had the right to authorise transactions for several companies.”

Sharif and his family have dismissed the allegations of money laundering and denied any wrongdoing but the opposition is demanding an independent probe. Meanwhile the Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party to submit their views on formation of a commission to probe the Panama Papers scam. The court adjourned till November 3 the hearing of five constitutional petitions on the Panama Papers revelations about corruption, which allegedly involves Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ’s family. The petitions seek disqualification of Nawaz Sharif, and the PTI especially is hell bent on his ouster as the Prime Minister. “The commission will report to the Supreme Court,” the Chief Justice said, adding that the commission will have the same authority as the apex court. “SC has decided to resolve the issue of Panama Papers leaks,” Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali said while asking both the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to “show restraint”.

N E W YO R K , N OV 1 (AGENCIES): In newly released Clinton campaign emails disseminated by WikiLeaks, the Washington Post reports that then-CNN contributor and DNC official Donna Brazile — who is now the DNC’s interim chair — shares more detail about a forthcoming question at a Democratic debate and promises more information before a separate town hall. The emails don’t indicate where the information came from— CNN has denied supplying her with questions, and there is no evidence it did— but it now seems clear that Brazile was getting information beforehand from somewhere and sharing it with the Clinton campaign. In response to the revelations, CNN said Monday that Brazile, who had been on a suspended contract since she assumed the lead-

ership of the DNC earlier this year, had resigned on Oct. 14, after a previously released email raised similar questions. CNN also said it was “completely uncomfortable with what we have learned about her interactions with the Clinton campaign while she was a CNN contributor,” according to Politico. In an email released Monday morning by WikiLeaks, Brazile provides details to top Clinton aides about what Clinton would be asked at a CNN debate March 6 in Flint, Michigan, by a woman whose family had lead poisoning. “One of the questions directed to HRC tomorrow is from a woman with a rash,” Brazile writes in the subject line of an email to Jennifer Palmieri and John Podesta. In the body of the email, she adds: “Her family has lead poison and she will ask what, if anything, Hillary will do as president to help the ppl of Flint.” The description matches Flint resident Lee-Anne Walters, a debate questioner who had previously talked about her family’s rashes and showed her own to a photographer. Her question was different, though. She asked if Clinton would “make it a requirement that all public water systems must remove all lead service lines throughout the entire United States”.

Seoul, NOV 1 (Agencies): The woman at the centre of a political scandal threatening South Korea’s president has been detained. Choi Soon-sil, a longtime friend of President Park Geun-hye, is accused of influence peddling and interfering in state affairs. Prosecutors have 48 hours since her detention on Monday to decide if they will formally arrest her. On Monday, eight banks were raided in connection with the scandal, South Korean media reported. The Yonhap news agency said the authorities were looking to confiscate documents related to Ms Choi’s financial transactions. Ms Choi has been accused of embezzling money and of pressuring companies to donate to foundations she benefitted from, on the basis of her closeness to the president. She also stands accused of involvement in high-level presidential decision making, despite lacking the security clearance required to handle classified documents. She was placed under emergency detention late on Monday with prosecutors saying they feared she may destroy evidence. “She has fled overseas in the past, and she doesn’t

Choi Soon-sil

have a permanent address in Korea, making her a flight risk,” a prosecution official told Yonhap. “She is also in an extremely unstable psychological state.” Ms Choi had told reporters on Monday that she “committed a sin that deserves death”. On Tuesday morning, a 45-year-old man who said he wanted to “help Choi Soon-sil die” drove a construction vehicle into the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ office. Ms Choi was not inside the building, but a security guard was injured in the attack and the building was damaged. Ms Choi has been accused of embezzling money and of pressuring companies to donate to foundations she benefitted from, on the

basis of her closeness to the president. She also stands accused of involvement in high-level presidential decision making, despite lacking the security clearance required to handle classified documents. Last week, Park publicly apologised, admitting “certain documents” had been shared with Choi and she had been allowed to edit political speeches. “Choi advised me on expressions in my speeches and public relations during the last presidential campaign and she continued to help me for a certain period of time after I took office,” Ms Park said. “I deeply apologise to the people”, she said, before bowing to the camera.

Additional reports allege she misused money from nonprofit organizations after pressuring businesses into donations.

BERLIN, Nov 1 (Agencies): Germany’s prolific Miroslav Klose, the all-time World Cup top-scorer, announced his retirement on Tuesday at the age of 38. Germany’s leading scorer with 71 goals in 137 internationals was without a club after his Lazio contract expired last season and he will now join the national side’s coaching team. Klose hit a record 16th goal in World Cup finals during the 7-1 semi-final thrashing of hosts Brazil two years ago, which saw him overtake former Brazil star Ronaldo. Germany went on to win the title. Klose now plans to join Germany’s coaching staff after an invitation from head coach Joachim Loew. According to a German FA (DFB) statement, Klose will complete an individual training programme with the goal of embarking on a coaching career. He will be on the Germany bench alongside Loew

NEW DELHI, Nov 1 (PTI): With the Indian men’s hockey team delivering some fine results under his tutelage, Roelant Oltmans’ contract as chief coach is set to be extended till the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Oltmans has helmed the team to the Azlan Shah Cup silver medal and most recently the Asian Champions Trophy gold. India defeated Pakistan in the final to lift the trophy in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday. The side had also done well to make the Olympic quarterfinals under him. “Yes, we got a request from Hockey India asking about renewal of Oltmans’ contract till 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Looking at the team’s progress and his performance, the Sports Authority of India doesn’t have any problems. So, we have forwarded the file to the Ministry. So you can say it’s in progress,” a top SAI source told PTI.

Stoke City beat Swansea 3-1

Stoke striker Wilfried Bony took just three minutes to open the scoring as he found the back of the net against his old side.

Lo n d o n, N ov 1 (Agencies): Ivory Coast striker Wilfried Bony ended a 10-month goal drought with a brace against former club Swansea City as Stoke City’s revival continued with a 3-1 win in Monday’s Premier League clash. Both goals for the 27-year-old Manchester City loanee were set up by another former Swansea favourite, Joe Allen, with Alfie Mawson also putting through his own net as Stoke claimed a third win on the bounce. Swansea, who had

levelled in the first half through Wayne Routledge, have made their worst start to a Premier League season with just five points from 10 matches. It is also the first time they have gone nine games without a win. Stoke are unbeaten in five matches and climb to 12th, five points clear of the relegation zone, while Swansea are second from bottom and five points adrift of safety. It took less than three minutes for Bony to make his mark, pouncing to

Colombian defender Mina on Man City radar

Gambhir likely to be picked for Eng series

Rio de Janeiro, Nov 1 (IANS): Manchester City are reportedly considering a move to sign Colombian defender Yerry Mina in the next European football transfer window. Mina has impressed the English Premier League (EPL) club’s scouts with his form for Brazilian Serie A leaders Palmeiras and the Colombia national team, reports Xinhua. According to the Sambafoot news portal, the 22-year-old has three years to run on his Palmeiras contract and a 30 million euro ($32.9 million) release clause.

M um b a i , N o v 1 (IANS): All eyes will be on the Delhi duo of opener Gautam Gambhir and pacer Ishant Sharma, when the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) national selection committee meet here to choose the team for the England Test series on Wednesday. Gambhir, who made a comeback in the justconcluded New Zealand series, gave a good account of himself by scoring a half century in the final Test at Indore before accumulating 147 in Delhi’s last Ranji Trophy match against Odisha. Ishant, on the other hand, was picked for the the opening Test against

prod home from inside the six-yard box after Allen’s mishit half-volley for his first goal in 23 matches for club and country. However, the Swans levelled within five minutes as Routledge did brilliantly to head home Gylfi Sigurdsson’s superb cross. The hosts were impressive going forward and Scotland international Charlie Adam - making his first Premier League start of the season - hit the post with a fantastic curling effort. Stoke suffered a blow

in the 26th minute as Swiss playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri had to go off injured and was replaced by Egyptian youngster Ramadan Sobhi. Adam then conjured up another splendid effort but was this time denied by the other post. The woodwork was proving to be a very effective 12th man for the visitors as it once gain came to the rescue after Allen’s astute pass found Marko Arnautovic, who rounded goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski only to see his effort cannon back off an upright. Bony blazed over after being teed up by Arnautovic at the start of the second half but 19-year-old Sobhi was the creator as the hosts restored their advantage in the 55th minute. Sobhi produced a delightful piece of skill inside the box after a superb pass from Irish veteran Glenn Whelan and his shot was diverted into his own net by Mawson. It was another brilliant Stoke move which produced the killer third goal 17 minutes from time. Arnautovic delivered a sublime back-heeled pass to find Allen, whose shot was saved by Fabianski. However, the Welsh international reacted brilliantly to help the ball across to Bony, who applied the finish.

the Kiwis at Kanpur but could not play any part in the rubber after being down with chikungunya. Though Ishant did not look match fit in Delhi’s Ranji game against Karnataka at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the seasoned campaigner bowled more than 40 overs at good pace in his two domestic outings. With opener Lokesh Rahul still nursing a hamstring strain and seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar dealing with an ankle injury, Gambhir and Ishant will be the likely options when the M.S.K. Prasad-led selection panel picks the side. No other major

Bumper Madrid deal banks Bale over 115 mn euros

Gareth Bale

MADRID, Nov 1 (Agencies): Gareth Bale’s new six-year Real Madrid contract will see the Welshman reportedly rake in well in excess of 115 million euros ($126 million) as the Spanish giants bet on Bale to lead another glorious era at the Santiago Bernabeu. Bale, who has won two Champions League titles in three years in Spain, solidifies his position as one of the highest earners in football along with the likes of Real team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona duo Lionel Messi and Neymar. The flying winger, 27, is set to take home as much as £350,000 a week after tax, according to British media, though figures vary wildly. “That’s for me to know and no one else to find out, sorry,” said a smiling Bale

when quizzed on his new salary. However, Ronaldo looks set to retain his status as top dog of the pay packets at the Bernabeu with the Portuguese expected to become the latest Madrid star to extend his deal in the coming weeks. Real have already handed lucrative renewals to Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Lucas Vazquez to hold onto their key men with a one-year transfer ban imposed by FIFA to come over the next two transfer windows. Madrid and arch rivals Barcelona have embarked on a fleet of renewals to ward off interest from the cash-rich Premier League, backed by a £5 billion ($6 billion) domestic TV deal. Bale joined Real for

a then-world record fee of just over 100 million euros from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013. That figure has since been eclipsed by Paul Pogba’s 105-million-euro move to Manchester United in August. “It’s Real Madrid, it is the biggest club in the world,” Bale added, rejecting any notion he could return to England, where he was crowned Premier League Player of the Year in for the 2010/2011 and 2012/2013 seasons. “When an opportunity to play for Real Madrid comes up, you don’t turn it down.” Madrid have topped the Deloitte Football Money League for the past 11 years as the highest earning club, but were overtaken last season by Barca. Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu confirmed at the club’s annual general meeting on Saturday that contract negotiations with Luis Suarez and Messi are also under way after Neymar recently extended his deal to 2021. Despite the desire to keep 31-year-old Ronaldo at the Bernabeu for the rest of his career, Real president Florentino Perez has long believed Bale is the man to succeed Ronaldo as Real’s best and most marketable player.

changes are expected in the Virat Kohli-led side, which whitewashed the Kiwis 3-0. The Indian squad is set to assemble on November 5 at Rajkot, which is set to host the series opener from November 9 to 13. The other Tests are slated to be held in Vishakapatnam (November 17 to 21), Mohali (November 26 to 30), Mumbai (December 8 to 12) and Chennai (December 16 to 20). The five-match series will be a litmus test for the No.1-ranked home side, with England having won the last three Test series between the two nations -- two in England and one in India.

Inter, traditionally one of Italy’s three biggest clubs alongside Juventus and city rivals AC Milan, appointed the 46-year-old De Boer on Aug. 9, two weeks before the start of the season, after Robert Mancini left by mutual consent. The former Netherlands defender had no experience of playing or coaching in Italy. He had previously been in charge of Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam for six years during which he won four league titles. His overall record of five wins, two draws and seven defeats included shock losses to Hapoel Beer Sheva and Sparta Prague in the Europa League and at home to Cagliari in Serie A.

Having got off to a strong start, Indian eves defended well throughout the game, not allowing

the Malaysians too many forays into their D and constantly keeping them at bay. In fact, right till the end, the Malaysian team was denied an opportunity to seek penalty corner. Though the opponents took desperate attempts at field goals, they were palmed away rather brilliantly by the Indian custodian Rajani to help maintain the team’s lead. The Indian eves con-

tinued to put up an inspired show as they came back stronger after the halftime, when Deepika converted a penalty corner in the 45th minute. Until then India had three failed attempted at converting penalty corners despite trying different variations. Murray finally has a chance to become No. 1 Paris, Nov 1 (Agencies): By the end of the week, Andy Murray could become the top-ranked player in the world for the first time in his career. Ever since he first reached No. 2 in the tennis rankings seven years ago, the 29-year-old Murray has been trying to catch the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. The No. 1 ranking is finally within touching distance, and he will replace Djokovic at the top if he wins the Paris Masters and Djokovic fails to reach the final. Murray is trying not to think about it too much. “It’s not in my control. Even if I win all of my matches this week, I still might not get there,” Murray said Monday. “It’s in Novak’s hands. “I don’t feel any differently now to how I did six, eight weeks ago. My goal wasn’t to finish No. 1 at the end of this year,” Murray said. “There (was) a lot stronger chance of doing it in the early part of next year, which is what I (had) targeted – rather than this week.” Murray and Djokovic both have won seven titles this season – a career-best for Murray. If he does reach the top, Murray would become the oldest first-time No.

1 since John Newcombe achieved it at the age of 30 in June 1974. “I do deserve to be there,” Murray said. “(The) last four or five months I have played the best (tennis) of my career.” Murray, who lost to Djokovic in last year’s Paris Masters final, faces Fernando Verdasco in the second round. He leads the Spaniard 11-1 overall. Murray won the Erste Bank Open in Vienna on Sunday for his third straight tournament win while Djokovic’s stellar form has dipped since winning the French Open for the first time in June. The top-ranked Serb lost in the third round at Wimbledon to Sam Querrey and in the first round of the Olympics to Juan Martin del Potro. After that, Stan Wawrinka rallied to beat Djokovic in the U.S. Open final, and two weeks ago Djokovic lost in the Shanghai Masters semifinals to Spanish player Roberto Bautista Agut. “Wimbledon was obviously a bit of a surprise,” Murray said. “Maybe one or two losses you wouldn’t expect.” But Murray smiled when viewing Djokovic’s slump from a different perspective. “He’s been in the final

Andy Murray

in New York, won (the Rogers Cup) and (reached) the semis of Shanghai,” he said. “He’s doing all right.” Wawrinka, who lost to Djokovic in the Paris Masters semifinals last year, is excited about the ongoing fight for No. 1.

“I’m looking forward to see what’s going to be the result of Andy and Novak here, and in London (at the ATP finals),” Wawrinka said. “Novak just lost three matches in three tournaments. People talk. But for the rest, he always won.”
