Farmers reject Centre’s offer; threaten to block Delhi

New Delhi/Chandigarh, Nov 29 (PTI): Rejecting the Centre’s offer to hold talks once they move to the Burari ground, the farmers who are protesting at Delhi’s borders for four days against the new farm laws on Sunday said they will not accept any conditional dialogue and threatened to block all five entry points to the national capital. As the standoff showed no signs of easing, PM Narendra Modi again batted for the new laws in his monthly radio address, saying these reforms have given the farmers “new rights and opportunities” and have started mitigating their problems in a short span of time. Home Ministry too assured the farmers’ organisations that a high-level team of Union Ministers will talk to them once the protesters move to the designated site. A meeting of over 30 farmer groups was held to discuss Union Minister Amit Shah’s offer for talks before the scheduled date of December 3 once they move to Burari in the city, but the thousands of protesters refused to budge and prepared for spending another night in the cold at the Singhu and

Tikri border points. Their representatives said Shah’s condition that they shift the protest is not acceptable and claimed Burari ground is an “open jail”. Opposition parties too pressed the government to initiate an unconditional dialogue with the farmers. “The condition laid down by Home Minister Amit Shah is not acceptable to us. We will not hold any conditional talks. We reject the government’s offer. The blockade will not

end. We will block all five entry point to Delhi,” Surjeet S Phul, Bhartiya Kisan Union’s Punjab president, told reporters. “The condition put for talks is an insult to farmers. We will never go to Burari. It is not a park but an open jail,” he added. Gurnam Singh Chadhoni, Haryana unit president for the Bhartiya Kisan Union, said they were ready to talk “but will not accept any condition now”. Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla in a let-

ter to 32 farmers organisations sent on Saturday cited the cold conditions and the COVID-19 outbreak and said the farmers should move to the Burari ground where adequate facilities have been made for them. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had on Saturday said that a delegation of the farmers has been invited for a discussion on December 3 but as some of their unions have demanded that talks should be held immediately, the central government is ready to do so as soon as the

ASU opposes ENSF demand for 45% reservation in NSSB

D I M A P U R , N OV 2 9 (NPN): Eastern Sumi Students’ Union (ESSU) has expressed disappointment on the non-completion of GPS Hoshepu under SDEO Aghunato and appealed to the responsible authority to take up the construction work without further delay. ESSU president, Hokato V Yepthomi stated that the work order was approved and sanctioned in 2010-11 and the entire amount of Rs. 14,68,665.58 has been released but the construction work has not been undertaken till date. ESSU stated that it raised the matter through local dailies in August this year but department has not taken any initiative. It therefore, appealed to the responsible authority to take prompt initiative and start the construction by intimating the union office without further delay.

DIMAPUR, NOV 29 (NPN): Close on the heels of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) expressing disapproval of ENSF demands on 45% job reservation in Nagaland Service Selection Board(NSSB); Angami Students’ Union (ASU) has also aired its opposition to the ENSF demand for 45% reservation in Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB). Terming the demand as “totally unreasonable, unfair, selfish and arrogant”, ASU president Vizokho Zashümo and general secretary Petekhrietuo Kiewhuo in a press release termed it as “absolutely unacceptable”. ASU said that such a “detrimental factor” cannot be allowed to be implemented, the Union maintained that such a destructive policy would destroy “our very fragile society”. ASU has called for reflecting morally the fact that every mother sweats to see the triumph of her children and emphasised that no mother was less important. ASU also asserted that it would resort to every possible democratic action against the implementation of the ENSF’s demand by the

State government. Further, ASU said reservation and quotas among “our people” was a useless measure and required to be done away with and dumped in the waste bin for good. According to signatories, no coercive force should decide the fate of “our people” in any case. ASU also reiterated that its desire was to ensure that no one was suppressed, at the same time, none having merit should be denied either. “Human civilisation has evolved with time, situation and reality. No civilisation evolved overnight. Naga society is still in the process of developing since the introduction of education by American missionaries in the 18th century. Some evolved late, others later as part of the undeniable truth of life,” ASU added. It may be recalled that earlier, the NSF had expressed deep concern over the ENSF’s 45% reservation demand in NSSB . NSF had questioned whether “the very purpose of the exorbitant demand” was to sabotage and derail the long-drawn effort to constitute the board into a reality.

protesters shift to the ground in Burari. The central government has reached out to the farmers underscoring its willingness to hold talks with them. It has also asserted that concerns expressed by some farm bodies about the new laws are misplaced, asserting that existing support measures like the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and state-run ‘mandis’ will remain in place. In his monthly ‘Mann Ki Baat’ broadcast, Prime Minister Modi said “correct information, away from rumours and confusion of any kind” is a big strength for people in any field, as he spoke about a couple of farmers involved with innovative practices in the field. “The demands, which were made by farmers for years and regarding which every political party at some point of time had made promises, have been fulfilled... These reforms have not only freed them of various shackles but also given them new rights and new opportunities. These rights have begun mitigating farmers’ problems in a very short span of time,” he said on the new farm laws.

D I M A P U R , N OV 2 9 (NPN): Expressing concern over the disbandment of Legislative Forum on HIV&AIDS, Network of Nagaland NGOs on Drugs and AIDS Organisation (NNagaDAO) has appealed to Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) speaker Sharingain Longkumer to continue providing political leadership in dealing with HIV/AIDS and other public health issues in the State. In a representation to the speaker on behalf of 48 organisations, NNagaDAO observed that Nagaland continues to have one of the highest prevalence rates of communicable like HIV, viral hepatitis, TB, etc, and non-communicable disease like cancer, mental ill-health, poor sexual and reproductive health among the adolescents, which was a matter of a serious concern and required urgent intervention and redressal. A 40-year-old Chennaibased man had alleged that he suffered serious side effects, including a virtual neurological breakdown and impairment of cognitive functions and sought Rs. 5 crore compensation in a legal notice to Serum Institute and others, besides seeking a halt to the trial, reports BusinessToday. The legal notice was sent to Serum Institute, the world’s largest vaccine maker, which has collaborated with Oxford University and Astra Zeneca, for manufacturing of the vaccine, ‘Covidshield.’ The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), one of the sponsors besides SII, and Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research, which administered the vaccine to the man, was served with the notice.

ship and engagement by the elected members of NLA. Hence, given the multifaceted challenges confronting the State, NNagaDAO, urged Longkumer to continue providing political leadership in helping address public health issues. As public health issues and problems had increasingly shown an adverse impact on the health of people in Nagaland, the representation emphasized that the State required an urgent action with political leadership to accelerate and scale up the response. Having gained much learning from COVID-19 pandemic, especially on the importance of political leadership in formulating guidance, monitoring and evaluating the response, NNagaDAO said it was equally important to have such involvement of the MLAs on public health issues. The organisation called upon all the legislators to provide matured political leadership to address public health and save precious lives and protect the vulnerable population of the State.
