Civic polls to go ahead: Zeliang
OROP suicide row: Kejriwal, Rahul detained by police SAYS ELECTIONS IN PLACES WHERE THERE ARE NO OPPOSITION NEW DELHI, NOV 2 D I M A P U R , N OV 2 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister T.R. Zeliang has said that elections to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) would go ahead in places “where there is/are no opposition” to implementing 33% women reservation and therefore requested public to extend cooperation with the state government on the ground that development of small townships that do not come under village or municipals have been lagging behind. The chief minister said this while inaugurating the newly created Chozuba Town Council under Phek district on Wednesday afternoon, a press note from the Chief Minister’s Media cell informed. It may however be pointed out that the chief minister continues to ignore the September 22, 2012 Nagaland Legislative Assembly resolution wherein the amended 2006 Act pertaining to women reservation was made inoperative. Holding of civic polls can only be done after the state assembly takes cognisance of the 2012 resolution.
KDCC objects to draft E-roll for municipal councils DIMAPUR, NOV 2 (NPN): Kohima District Congress Committee (KDCC) has raised objection to the ongoing exercise on “draft electoral roll for Municipal/ Town Councils”, saying that the draft electoral roll for Municipal/Town Councils was that of the latest e-roll summary revisions made for assembly elections. While reacting to an order that the present summary revision of e-roll of the 19 wards in Kohima, should be completed within 10 days starting from November 1, 2016, KDCC said that e-roll for ULBs should be done from 2004 till date so that sufficient time was granted to the electoral registration officer to ensure that all eligible electorates registered in the democratic exercise. In this regard, KDCC president Kevi Vizo urged the State government and the responsible department to implement the municipal guidelines in letter and spirit and immediately order complete revision of the e-roll for all the wards and colonies under the Municipal and Town Councils. According to Vizo, as per “The Nagaland Municipal Election Rules, 2003” summary revision of e-roll for Municipal and Town

Zeliang hit out at those opposing the 33% reservation when he claimed that menfolk were agreeable to 33% women reservation through nomination and full voting rights. He however said: “If any amendment required to be made in the Act, we can always do which is not good for the citizen of the town/ city.” Zeliang pointed out that as per the Village Council Act elections to village councils were done as per customary law. However, for the town council elections, it would be done as per the

(IANS): In an unprecedented move, police detained Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, his deputy Manish Sisodia and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday after a veteran committed suicide over a scheme to equalize pension for ex-military personnel. Rahul, detained twice during the day, was let off at night. Kejriwal and Gandhi were detained amid demonstrations in the heart of the capital after they tried to meet the grieving family of Ram Kishan Grewal, who ended his life on Tuesday evening here. Sisodia was detained in the morning after he met the dead man’s son at a hospital. “I went to meet the family, not to stage a dharna. What’s wrong with that? What kind of system is this, Modiji,” Sisodia asked, targeting Narendra Modi. Grewal’s son Jaswant said he, his younger brother and brother-in-law were beaten and taken to a police station when they tried to meet Gandhi. Demanding justice, he said he had never witnessed such police conduct (Cont’d on p-7) vis-a-vis veterans’ families.
mits fee etc. were mainly for development of towns and to pay the salary of the workers. Unlike other taxes like CST or Nagaland Sales Tax, he said there was no central share or state share in such taxes collected by the Municipal or Town Councils. He also said the government had recently decided not to accept any land donated to the Government with condition from the land owner, but to acquire the land with direct purchase. On Naga political solution: The chief minister has urged upon “every Naga citizen to support solution for permanent peace”, saying Nagas have had enough of armed confrontations and that it was high time to find a peaceful solution through dialogue and negotiations. “Let us make this land free of armed conflict, which is the only way to take our state towards progress and development. It is also my desire that this spirit of unity and consensus prevailing at the state level should also percolate down to the grassroot level,” said Zeliang.
Amend Act before holding civic polls: APO D I M A P U R , N OV 2 (NPN): Angami Public Organisation (APO) has taken a stand over the raging controversy regarding the cabinet decision to go ahead with civic polls with 33% women reservation. In a statement, APO joint secretary information and publicity Khriekhotuo Mor sounded the alarm over the “reverse impact by the introduction of the case system” in the state through section 23A of the Nagaland Municipal(1st Amendment)Act 2006 in the ongoing debate on 33% women reservation. APO joint secretary information and publicity Khriekhotuo Mor pointed out that as per the above 1st Amendment: “seats in every municipality should be reserved for the Schedule Castes and the Scheduled Tribes, Women including women from the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe” as per provisions contained in clauses(1) to (3) of Article 243-T of the constitution. He further pointed out that the legal position is that no presidential order has been made in terms of
Article 341 with respect to the schedule tribes in two north eastern statesNagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. He also said the present “Nagaland Municipal Act had included a community (Scheduled Caste) in respect of which the Presidential Order is non-existence”. APO recalled that the NMA has claimed that 33% of seats in civic bodies were exclusively reserved for women a point he said, was supported by the state chief minister and his cabinet committee.APO however pointed out that as per the Nagaland Municipal Act 2006, there was a clear provision that 33% was reserved for SC, ST and Women and which was inclusive of women from ST category and that the remaining 34% seats were left open without any reservation. If only 34% remained, APO asked where is the space for the Nagas. APO said the issue is now between indigenous tribes of Nagaland verses other communities and the government of Nagaland.

CM not obligated to justify Govt has no moral authority to continue: ACAUT, CCoFA sacking of Mmhonlumo: CMO DIMAPUR, NOV 2 (NPN): Reacting to the statements published in the local dailies demanding that the chief minister give out reasons/justify the sacking of BJP legislator, Mmhonlumo Kikon from the post of parliamentary secretary, chief minister’s office media cell has said as per the Constitution of India, and as per the conventions being followed in parliamentary democracy, the appointment or sacking of any minister is the prerogative of the chief minister. The same is the case with parliamentary secretaries and advisers, CMO added. Referring to Mmhonlumo’s case, CMO asserted that the chief minister was “not under obligation to give any reason or justification for such actions; and it is not normally done also”. It further reminded that in the case of any disciplinary action taken by any political party on suspension or expulsion from the party against any minister, parliamentary secretary, adviser or MLA, show cause notice is always served, and the concerned person is given an opportunity to de-
fend himself, or to rebut the charges or allegations against him. However, in this case CMO said sacking or dropping of a minister, parliamentary secretary, advisor etc from the council of minister was not a disciplinary action, saying “no such procedures need to be followed be it in the State or Centre”. Portfolios reassigned: Following the removal of BJP legislator, Mmhonlumo Kikon as parliamentary secretary Labour & Employment, Skill Development and Border Affairs, the chief minister has reassigned the following departments among the Advisors, both BJP legislators with immediate effect. According to the notification issued by cabinet secretary R.B. Thong, Imtilemba Sangtam, advisor who has been holding the charge of Cooperation has been given additional charge of Relief & Rehabilitation. Meanwhile, Dr. T.M. Lotha, advisor, who has been holding the charge of Relief & Rehabilitation and Treasuries & Accounts has been relieved of Relief & Rehabilitation and given charge of Labour & Employment and Skill Development.
DIMAPUR, NOV 2 (NPN): ACAUT Nagaland has sought the intervention of Nagaland Governor on the “absolute gross mismanagement” taking place in the state, stating that the government has no moral authority to run the affairs of the state anymore. ACAUT media cell while slamming state government of using “draconian brute force” to suppress NSSATA teachers on their demand for rights, instead of resolving the genuine grievances of the people, said that the elite looters have been exalted to high status and the down trodden marked as villains. It stated that the action of the government was “politically motivated” and has “numbed” and shocked the entire state. ACAUT said that the “habitual attitude” of the government to dismiss the genuine grievance of the teachers was uncalled for and highly condemnable, when SSA, RMSA and Hindi teachers were not paid for more than

ACAUT also stated that it was absolutely reprehensible on the part of the government to claim that it has no money to pay the salaries of its own teachers, when it siphoned thousands of crores of wheat, rice and SK oil. In addition to this, ACAUT claimed that the government was spending crores or rupees to buy luxury cars (See table) but could not pay the salaries to the teachers, whom the future of thousands of students depend.

The project is being implemented by the Parisbased French NGO Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development (ACTED) along with Guwahati-based North East India Committee on Relief and Development (NEICORD) which in partnership with local NGO Team Metamorphosis (TM) is responsible for field implementation, Bangalorebased Public Affairs Center (PAC) which is tasked with the research component, and the Guwahati-based Nanda Talukdar Foundation (NTF) as its media advocacy component. The project seeks
to achieve three main results- to encourage demand for improved service delivery, improved access to and quality of public services particularly for the most marginalized and women, and to enhance transparency of service providers for 10 central government flagship schemes: IAY, JSSK, ICDS, MDM, MGNREGA, RKVY, NBA/TSC, RGGVY, NSAP, and TPDS. JSSK was launched in June 2011 by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India under National Health Mission with an aim to encourage all pregnant women to deliver in Public Health Facilities to fulfil the commitment of achieving cent per cent institutional deliveries, and to help reduce Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR). The scheme is estimated to benefit more than 12 million pregnant women who
access Government health facilities for their delivery. Under JSSK, all pregnant women going to government health institution for delivery and all sick infants (below one year of age) going to government health institutions for treatment are entitled to: free and zero expense delivery and caesarean section; free essential diagnostics (blood, urine tests and ultra-sonography, etc); free drugs and consumables; free diet during stay in health institutions (up to 3 days for normal delivery and 7 days for caesarean section); free provision of blood (on replacement basis); free transport from home to health institutions; free transport between facilities in case of referral; drop back from institutions to home after 48 hrs stay; exemption from all kinds of user charges; and diet for mothers during stay of sick children in hospital for 5 days.

Catholics observe ‘All Souls Day’ DIMAPUR: On the occasion of ‘All Saints Day’ on Wednesday, Catholics of the diocese of Kohima flocked to their own respective parishes and then went to the cemeteries and places where their departed ones are buried to pray for them for God to grant them eternal reward. Fr. George Punnolil, the financial administrator of the diocese, presided over the Eucharist at Mary Help of Cathedral Church, Kohima. The liturgical celebration ended with special prayers and blessings at the tomb of late Bishop Abraham Alangimattathil, first bishop of the diocese of Kohima. In his homily, Fr. George explained the importance of praying for departed souls. It may be mentioned that ‘All souls Day’ is celebrated on November 2 every year just after the feast of All Saints Day on November 1. All Souls Day is a holy day set aside for
honouring the dead. According to Catholic belief, the soul of a person who dies can go to one of three places. The first is heaven, where a person who dies in a state of perfect grace and communion with God goes. The second is hell, where those who die in a state of mortal sin are naturally condemned by their choice. The intermediate option is purgatory, which is thought to be where most people, free of mortal sin, but still in a state of lesser (venial) sin, must go. In the diocese of Kohima, the bishop has declared holiday on November 2 for all the Catholic Schools to facilitate priests to avail their service to bless the tombs of the faithful departed of their community members in the cemeteries and places of burial and also facilitating the Catholics to attend Holy Mass in the Church and visit the cemeteries.
KIDIMA: St Francis Xavier’s Parish of Kidima observed the day with Reverend Father Thomas Muttathil, parish priest on November 2, at its church premises. Father Thomas Muttathil in his introductory speech noted that the feast was to remember and pray for the departed souls on the auspicious day. Parish priest said through people’s prayer the departed souls could attain heaven that was the duty of Christians and the plan of God. Parish priest in the intersession asked forgiveness and mercy for the souls in need for purification. Thomas Muttathil asked faithfuls to pray for the souls as the angels and saints were praying from heaven for God’s children on earth. Franciscan Sisters of Saint Mary of the Angels (FSMA) and faithful people from different communities joined together for Eucharist celebration.

Mizoram starts identification of Reang refugees zoram since October 1997 after they fled their homes in western Mizoram following ethnic violence in the northeastern state. Despite several initiatives by the Mizoram government to bring them back, the refugees have been reluctant to go back to their villages unless their demands for food and security are met. Congress protests against state government’s silence I tanag a r , N ov 2 (PTI): Congressmen today staged a dharna on the last day of filing nomination to the November 19 bypoll to Hayuliang constituency protesting against the Arunachal Pradesh government’s alleged “deliberate attempt” to curtail the democratic right of a candidate by not yet giving its approval to the Congress nominee’s VRS request. The party also submitted representation to the Election Commission for its intervention on this issue. Hundreds of Congressmen led by Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Padi Richo, holding placards and banners, staged the dharna in front of the state civil secretariat in the morning

The measures came in wake of the Supreme Court’s directives about the repatriation, and the roadmap submitted by Mizoram on how it plans to rehabilitate the displaced people. Mizoram Home Minister R. Lalzirliana said in Aizawl earlier this week that the state government would not concede the demands of the MBDPF as a precondition of the refugees’ repatriation. “It would also be impossible for the state government to allot the five hectares of land to each repatriated tribal family. Authority to allot land is not vested with the state, but with the village councils. “The repatriated refugee families also would have to wait for allocation of land for construction of houses and for farming in accordance with the guidelines of their respective village councils,” the minister said while addressing a meeting of ruling Congress party workers.

Nepal gives Pranab a warm welcome
Nepalese President Bidhya Devi Bhandari, centre right, shakes hand with President Pranab Mukherjee on his arrival at the Tribhuwan international Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal, Wednesday. (AP/PTI)
K AT H M A N D U, N OV 2 (AGENCIES): Nepal on Wednesday pulled out all the stops in welcoming President Pranab Mukherjee as he began a three-day state visit, the first by an Indian head of state in 18 years aimed at cementing bilateral ties. Breaking protocol, President Bidhya Devi Bhandari received Mukherjee at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan international airport with vice president Nanda Bahadur Pun and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda”. After a 21-gun salute and a guard of honour presented by a contingent of the Nepalese Army, Mukherjee and Bhandari travelled in the same car to the president’s office, Shital Niwas, where they held bilateral talks. People lined up at sev-
eral places on the road from the airport to the president’s office to welcome Mukherjee by waving the flags of both countries. Mukherjee’s visit is expected to give a boost to high-level political contacts, and he will receive an honorary doctorate and be feted at two separate civic receptions. The two presidents discussed a wide range of issues and expressed satisfaction at the current status of bilateral ties while underscoring the importance of regular interactions among the top political leadership, said Nepal’s foreign ministry spokesperson Bharat Raj Poudyal. Mukherjee told Bhandari he is eager to host her in New Delhi soon. He also thanked Bhandari for promulgating Nepal’s new Constitution, the foreign ministry said. Mukherjee
is the first Indian President to visit Nepal after the new Constitution was promulgated last year. Relations between the two sides hit a low after key border trade points on the border were blockaded by groups in Nepal’s Madhes region opposed to the statute. Nepali is hoping Prachanda’s recent visit to India and Mukherjee’s trip will help restore ties to an even keel. Tough the visit is being described as a “goodwill trip”, Mukherjee is an old Nepal hand and has long-standing contacts with all sections of the country’s political leadership. The visit is also an opportunity for Nepali leaders, including those from agitating Madhes-based parties, to seek moral support for their demands, including the amendment of the new Constitution. After the meeting with Bhandari, Mukherjee went to the Indian embassy to participate in a reception hosted by ambassador Ranjit Rae. Vice president Pun, senior political leaders, officials, chiefs of security agencies and members of the business community attended the reception. The government announced a public holiday in honour of the visiting Indian President, who was scheduled to hold separate meetings with vice president Pun and Prachanda.

Don’t attack PM: Fadnavis to Sena
Devendra Fadnavis
MUMBAI, NOV 2 (PTI): Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has asked ally Shiv Sena to stop attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cautioning that it will only boomerang on it. However, he asserted that their alliance is intact and the government will complete its full term, despite frequent taunts and digs from Sena. “Speaking about Modiji will only put the Shiv Sena
in bad light and people do not like it at all. As far as I am concerned I am ready to face and give them a proper reply. So I do not care. “Governance and politics are two different things. The Sena should refrain from criticising the Prime Minister, but I am ok with their criticism,” Fadnavis told PTI in an interview. Fadnavis (46), who heads the first BJP-led Government in Maharasshtra which has sailed into its third year, also dwelt on other current issues like the campaign by the Maratha community for reservation, the Vidarbha issue and the controversy regarding his intervention in defusing the stand-off over Karan Johar’s film “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’. On the film row, the Chief Minister said that in hindsight, he feels the issue could have been handled in a better way.
Manohar Parrikar visits Uri LoC, reviews troop preparedness
SRINAGAR, NOV 2 (IANS): Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday visited the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district. This is the Defence Minister’s first visit to the Valley after the Indian Army carried out surgical strikes against terror launching pads across the LoC in the state. The Indian Army chief, General Dalbir Singh and other senior army commanders accompanied the Defence M Minister during his visit to the LoC and the Brigade headquarters in Uri garrison town. Eighteen soldiers were killed by Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) jihadi militants in Uri on September 18. The Defence Minister was briefed about the latest situation on the LoC arising out of frequent ceasefire violations by Pakistan. He also reviewed the preparedness of the troops who are defending the country’s borders under extremely difficult weather and terrain.
Slain SIMI activists were shot above waist, says lawyer
BHOPAL, NOV 2 (PTI/ IANS): The eight SIMI activists killed in an alleged encounter on Monday sustained gun shots in the head and chest, their lawyer claimed today citing the post-mortem reports. “They were fired upon from the front and all of them sustained injuries in their head and chest, above the waist,” lawyer Parvez Alam told PTI claiming that he has seen the postmortem reports of the slain SIMI men. Repeating his claim that it was a fake encounter, he said that according to a Supreme Court ruling, police should fire below the waist. Alam said that he will petition the local court for medical examination of the remaining members of the banned organisation lodged in the jail here and alleged they were assaulted. He also claimed that there was threat to his life. The activists were killed on the city outskirts at Malikheda following their escape from the highsecurity jail after slitting the throat of a security guard and scaling the 32-ft wall using bedsheets in the wee hours of October 31. “I am going to move the Bhopal Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court today seeking to conduct medical examination on 20-odd so-called SIMI members in jail,” he said. “I have learnt that they have been brutally beaten,” he alleged. “Besides, I am
going to meet MP Director General of Police and seek security for myself,” Alam said. “As I am openly speaking against the encounter, now I fear for my life and family members after the cold-blooded murder of my clients,” he added. Yesterday, bodies of seven of the eight SIMI activists, who were killed in the encounter, were buried in different parts of Madhya Pradesh amid tight security. While the last rites of Amjad Khan, Zakir Hussain, Mohammad Salik, Sheikh Mehboob, Aqueel Khilji, Mohammed Khalid and Abdul Majid were conducted in the state, the body of another deceased Sheikh Mujeeb was taken to Ahmedabad by his family members. All the bodies were handed over to the kin after post-mortem here. While taking custody of the bodies, the relatives questioned the genuineness of the police encounter. However, police has dismissed criticism over the encounter killing of the SIMI activists, saying there was heavy exchange of fire in which they were felled and four countrymade guns and some sharp-edged weapons were recovered from them. IG Yogesh Chaudhary has maintained that all questions raised over the encounter were a matter of investigation as the
series of events over seven hours between their escape and killing were still being probed. This came soon after a controversy raged over the police action following the daring pre-dawn jail-break, as TV channels showed footage purportedly from the encounter site in which a policeman is seen pumping bullets into a man from close range after some unidentified person takes out what appears to be a knife said to be in a plastic cover and places it back.
SIMI men were not armed: MP’s ATS chief
Madhya Pradesh’s antiterror squad chief Sanjeev Shami on Wednesday stood by his earlier statement that the eight SIMI activists shot dead in Bhopal on Monday were not armed when they were killed. “It is well settled in law when police can use force and take life. These men were dreaded criminals. If the police sees the possibility that such men can escape, they can use maximum force... Even if the police are not being fired at,” Shami told NDTV. On Tuesday, Shami was quoted by media as saying that the eight Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) men were unarmed when they were killed. “I stand by my earlier statement,” Shami told the TV channel when asked for his comments.
JAMMU, NOV 2 (PTI): For the border residents in Ramgarh sector of Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir, it has been raining bombs and bullets as Pakistan Rangers target several civilian villages along the International Border in the sector. Many border residents say that they have been witnessing death closely since the repeated ceasefire violations by Pakistan. “It rained bombs and bullets on our villages during the day. It was like a war is being fought and we were caught in between, we witnessed death from close quarters,” Kamlesh Kumari, a relative of Mara Ram, who died yesterday in the intense shelling by Pakistani forces, said. 60-year-old Mara Ram, a resident of Rangoor village, succumbed to injuries at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC) after he along with his son and 14-month-old granddaughter were injured in the firing. While majority of the injured are not in a condition to speak, their relatives recount the horror they went through after Pakistani side targeted their village at a time when they were getting ready for routine
chores. “We were aware that the situation was tense, but we never thought that our village would be attacked like this, if we had an iota of information we would have already shifted to safer place,” Harbans Lal, another relative of Mara Ram, said. The border residents say yesterday’s firing from across the border was so intense that people were unable to rescue their injured relatives as it continued unabated. “It was like Pakistani side was deliberately targeting civilian areas, they fired on the same spot again and again. My father was injured as he received splinter in the neck and as I tried to save him there was another blast and I was injured in the leg, my daughter Pari was also injured in the blast,” 31-year-old Rakesh Kumar said. A 14-month-old girl, Pari, who has sustained injuries in her neck and spine is also undergoing treatment at the GMC. Doctors attending the victims of cross border firing say that while most of the injuries were not life threatening, Pari might need to stay in hospital for long as her injuries would take longer to heal.

Trump vrs everybody
B
arely a week before the voters of the United States choose their electoral college to elect the 45th president; the battle for the White House get hotter as both Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton continue the last lap of the completion. The US presidential election this time has the most controversies, personal insults and the most unpopular candidates ever. As both candidates prepare for their last lap; the months of gruelling campaign will be most remembered for the manner in which the American liberals and the establishments have probably exposed themselves as never before. The US presidential election this time is all about a war of sorts waged by the present occupant of the White House, corporate, the powerful elites, media moghuls, immigrants, Muslims and Hollywood against the most unlikeliest and surprising of all candidates- Donald Trump. The USA has been exposed during the campaign and this is all because every one of those who believe in the status quo don’t want Donald Trump to win. When this happens, every bit of negative aspects even including those that are lies about Trump, are being given the widest publicity in the American media. On the other hand, Hillary Clinton’s worst offences such as lying to House committee about the email scams, feigning ignorance as US Secretary of State about security threat on US embassy in Libya where terrorists killed U.S. Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens and U.S. Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith. Her lifetime reputation as a serial liar and crony capitalist only amplifies this. It’s hard to believe she really means it when she makes such outrageous proposals as her confiscatory capital gains plan that could cause a Depression. Why Hillary is not in jail for offences that has landed many in the past; is chiefly because of US President Barak Obama who has ensured that his Justice Department provide the shield that Hillary needed. In turn, Hillary has promised to appoint first lady Michelle Obama if she becomes the next US president. The battle that Trump faces is not only from the powerful forces arrayed against him as mentioned above but also from key Republican officials and governors who have publicly announced their opposition to Trump. Trump has attracted the ire of Republican leaders because they could never come to grips with the fact that a man like Trump won the party ticket. The other is that Trump is not a status quoist like Hillary. In fact Trump is unpredictable and totally unconventional. Trump is famous for being famous, an egoist who makes often-outrageous statements, picks fights, and chases publicity, good or bad. What Trump lovers love to love the most about Trump is the fact that he hates political correctness so much and viciously tramples on other people’s sensitivities. Whether Trump wins or not remains to be seen but those who have already lost are those who have sunk to their lowest while trying to put down Trump. Many in the US are raising uncomfortable questions about the powerful elites, liberals, pseudo non-racial leaders and those who have been playing vote bank politics.
DailyDevotion Obedience or Independence? If you love Me, keep My commandments. —John 14:15 Our Lord never insists on obedience. He stresses very definitely what we ought to do, but He never forces us to do it. We have to obey Him out of a oneness of spirit with Him. That is why whenever our Lord talked about discipleship, He prefaced it with an “If,” meaning, “You do not need to do this unless you desire to do so.” “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself…” (Luke 9:23). In other words, “To be My disciple, let him give up his right to himself to Me.” Our Lord is not talking about our eternal position, but about our being of value to Him in this life here and now. That is why He sounds so stern (see Luke 14:26). Never try to make sense from these words by separating them from the One who spoke them. The Lord does not give me rules, but He makes His standard very clear. If my relationship to Him is that of love, I will do what He says without hesitation. If I hesitate, it is because I love someone I have placed in competition with Him, namely, myself. Jesus Christ will not force me to obey Him, but I must. And as soon as I obey Him, I fulfill my spiritual destiny. My personal life may be crowded with small, petty happenings, altogether insignificant. But if I obey Jesus Christ in the seemingly random circumstances of life, they become pinholes through which I see the face of God. Then, when I stand face to face with God, I will discover that through my obedience thousands were blessed. When God’s redemption brings a human soul to the point of obedience, it always produces. If I obey Jesus Christ, the redemption of God will flow through me to the lives of others, because behind the deed of obedience is the reality of Almighty God.

he Radiance is a weekly journal of the Jamaat-i-Islamia, a fundamentalist organization. It carries on its front page an article which says: First, you give us account. Apparently, it means the Hindus. The article is on the triple talaaq. The Hindu Personal Law came into being after first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s intervention. Marriages used to be a sacrament for life and the Sikh or the disabled had to go through the rigours of marriage with no relief. It was Nehru who introduced divorce in the Hindu religion for the first time. He was strongly opposed by Dr Rajindra Prasad, who was the chairman of the constituent assembly and widely respected leader throughout the country. Nehru had his way because he controlled the government machinery. The Muslims have faced a similar challenge for a long time. The triple talaaq has no Quranic sanction but it has been there for a long time. Some women challenged it in the Supreme Court which has said that

there should be an equality of gender. The government thought of issuing a questionnaire to find out the consensus but refrained from doing so. The Muslim Personal Law Board vehemently opposed this move. It has no woman member and continues to dictate terms without any consultation with women. This has been resented by the women themselves but the Muslim Personal Law Board continues to follow a policy which doesn’t even entertain their opinion. The question is bound to come up before parliament because the different sections of the Muslims community and even others are agitated over the situation. Muslim men continue to dominate and even though they grant that the Prophet wanted both men and women to be equal. However, when it comes codify this idea, the Board doesn’t care. Most Muslims countries in the world, including Pakistan and Bangladesh, have banned triple talaaq. But the male chauvinism in India is so strong that even a debate on the subject is not

In fact, his sister Priyanka Vadra has a better popular touch than him. It is a shame that a secular democratic country has been living with the practice like triple talaaq fearing the annoyance of the community. Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi bungled by bringing in legislation to ensure a stipend for the Muslim widow. It unnecessarily fuelled the anti-Babri Masjid agitation and during the P.V. Narasimha Rao government the mosque was demolished. The rest is history. In the same way, triple talaaq cannot continue because it goes against the grain of what is enshrined in the constitution. In fact, it is surprising that it has lasted so long despite the directive principles to have a common civil code. The successive governments since independence have evaded the question. The Modi government may also do the same. But this is not the solution. The
triple talaaq will have to go, sooner or later. The Radiance article has erroneously made the question as they and we, Muslims and Hindus. This is a matter which the Muslim community has to sort it out. But it cannot stay hanging as it has been the case since independence. Whatever the Muslim Personal Law Board’s objection, the questionnaire must be issued to find out how the community and the rest of people feel about. Probably, the winter session of parliament will witness a discussion on the subject. But even if it is not slated, it should take place. No doubt, the community has to decide but it hasn’t happened so far. And it looks odd that a secular democratic country feels helpless to do away with an anomaly that has been prevalent for over six decades. However reluctant the Modi government may feel it has to face the reality and find a solution. It is not Hindus versus Muslims; it is some outdated thinking which does not fit into the letter and spirit of the constitution. Visit My Website: www.kuldipnayar.com

Showdown at CM corral
is hands hung loosely on his sides as he walked up the street towards me. For some time now, I knew this moment would come when the two of us would meet up face to face. It was inevitable. Our fates were decided the day we met Nancy, the most popular woman in the NETbourhood. I watched him approach. There was no hurry in his steps. The afternoon sun shone directly on his face, and I could see there was sweat on his brows. A horse neighed somewhere. Else, all was quiet. The Bartender came out of the bat wings and leaned against a post to watch. This was nothing new for him. He had seen it all. He had dragged many a lifeless body from the dusty floor of his Bar to Boot Hill. Men had come and gone. And many had simply fallen dead from the gun shots and had to be dragged away to meet their Maker. From the corner of my eyes I could see people moving out of the way. For when bullets fly fast and furiously, the wise know it is best to get out of the way. The initial shots are mostly true to their targets, but the fingers of a dying man could squeeze off shots not knowing where the business end of their gun is pointed. A fly buzzed near my face, but I did not swat at it knowing any sudden move on my part would precipitate the fight. I wanted him up close so that I could look into his eyes when I shot him full of holes. I could also be shot, but I knew I would surely get my chance to pump my bullets into him. Ever since I was knee-high, I have hunted with a rifle I could scarcely lift off the ground. But when I took aim, my shots rarely went off the mark. Bullets were hard to come by in our small frontier town, and those times when I came back home without any game, Pa would scold me for wasting precious bullets and made me go to bed without dinner. And those times when I came back home with several squirrels, Pa would scold me for shooting at the bodies wasting precious meat. By the time I grew waist-high, I had mustered the art of barking squirrels, as we called it. We would should at the bark near the squirrel or birds and splinters of wood would knock out or stun the small animals and birds. That’s the way to go

about it, Pa would smile and pat my head. I was mighty pleased to have made my Pa happy and come morning, I would light a shuck to the woods again to bring home bigger game. “You shoot very well,” Ma used to tell me when she realized I had not wasted a single bullet in years. And I was determined not to waste any bullet now that I have grown up to stand on my own feet. No Siree, I won’t miss my target now that some darn fool feller is out to get me. I have learned that it is not important who shoots first, but it is important who can take shots, stand his ground, shoot straight and keep on shooting till his opponent is down on the ground kicking dirt on the throes of death. He stopped about twenty paces from me, flexed his fingers and got ready to draw. The afternoon grew deadly quiet. Out on the outskirts of the town, a dog barked and a cow mooed. People stopped dead on their feet on the sides of the street. Very soon, one of us would bite the dust, or both of us could be down on the ground bleeding to death and none of the bystanders would give a hoot. I looked into his eyes and I could see that he was dead serious to shoot at me. “Look here, feller,” I called out to him. “It is not too late fer ya to turn back and hightail it to the next town. Look at the far, blue mountains. There are cool streams running throughout the year and there are game a-plenty. Ya could foller the trails, go deep into the forest and live yer remaining God-given years with the wild animals that seem to have sired ya.” “Ya shut your stinking, tobaccochewing mouth,” he said. “Ya talk too much! Take a look around ya very carefully because that is the last thing ya will see before I write my initials on yuh belly. I have come to town to take a shot at ya and shoot ya I will.” Saying that, his hand dropped to grab iron. Boy oh boy, he was fast, I must admit, as fast as lightning. Before mine cleared leather, he had taken a shot at me! But I stood my ground, and determined to take my own shot, I grabbed my camera and shot a picture of him checking out the result of his photography. “I also got you, Richard,” I said as he departed for his next assignment. Response to Silverstein
will respond to your article on my stand as published in the Nagaland Post on Nov. 2, 2016 through the following points: 1.If India, as you believe, will never agree to a Naga nation, that is India’s problem and not our problem. A nation exists on the basis of its own history and geography and not on the agreement or approval of another nation. Our existence as a nation is therefore, not subject to India’s agreement or approval. As for ourselves, we know that we are a nation and will always be a nation whether India or Silverstein or even the whole world disagrees with what we know about ourselves. On this issue of independent existence, we also do not require any “outsider’s” opinion as to whether we should or should not live under India or Burma. Please also do not ever think that we are asking our independence from India or Burma. We are not asking our Independence from anybody including the UNO. As far as we are concerned, the declaration of a peoples independence over their own territories is a prerogative right of any nation on earth. As for India, we Nagas had already declared our independence on 14th August 1947 before India was granted her own independence on 15th August 1947 by the British. Therefore, the question of we asking independence from India does not arise at all. Whether India recognizes it or not, we have always been an independent nation in history. And we, as a people, have never ever thought that without India’s approval, we cannot have our independent existence as a nation. Please also note
that whereas India was granted her independence by her former British colonial rulers, we Nagas declared our own independence because despite 115 years of conflict with us, the British were able to set up their administration only in 30% of Naga territories. 2. As for your allegations that I am putting my own principles above the welfare of my own fellow Nagas, I wish to state that it is rather my fellow Naga leaders who have put this principles on me and I am just following their principles because they are honorable and worthy of my following. For example, our leader A.Z. Phizo was first offered to be the Chief Minister of the then un-fragmented Assam under which Naga hills was just a mere District. But he refused the offer though he could have become the most powerful man of India in what is now called the whole of North east India. In his own words he said: “I refused because I love our Naga people more than anything else in the world.” He was next offered to become a Cabinet Minister of the Indian Parliament. This too he refused. He was next offered to become the Ambassador of India to Malaya. Even when this was refused by him, he was next offered a blank cheque by Shri Prakasa the then Minister of Natural resources and Scientific research. Prakasa offered Phizo sayng: “Phizo whatever you want, we shall give you. Just make a list and give it to me. Money is not the question, we shall give you anything.” (For details, see “Reminiscences of Correspondences with A.Z. Phizo, by S.C. Jamir, p. 22).In my own small way, I too have been offered many
Some precautionary measures
iphupar village is one of the cleanest villages in Nagaland and also one of the most populated villages in Asia. It is conveniently located just a few kilometers away from Dimapur town. Many important places and institutions such as Dimapur Airport, NEZCC Complex, Agri-expo Centre, CIHSR Centre( Referral Hospital), Central Jail, Green Park, etc., to name a few are located right here. Keeping these important places and institutions in mind, people from all over the districts of Nagaland rush here to settle or buy land and
that keeps the price or value of the land extremely high. The most lucrative business at Diphupar these days is to sell the land. I have no right to interfere in what they do but being a permanent resident of Diphupar for so many years what saddens me the most is that our local people, taking the advantage of high price knowing or without knowing the consequences, are selling their precious land to the “Outsiders’’ especially people from the neighboring states of Nagaland. These outsiders or lookalike tribes or people come with lots of money and
they are ever-ready to pay whatever the sellers want. I do not have any objection people coming here and live but Nagas of Nagaland should know that one day these people will dominate our areas and perhaps, even take away our rights and by the way, not surprisingly, they even have their own colony. I am not so familiar with the village council rules and regulations but one thing I know for sure, correct me if I am wrong, is that selling our land to outsiders is against our customary laws and practices. This is going to have a negative
impact in the future if we do not check now. It is up to the people and the responsible council whether to let it go or take some precautionary measures before we become a microscopic minority in our own village and areas. The above lines are just my personal observation and in no way intended to hurt any person or public, if so I apologize, nevertheless, it is a matter of great concern for the kind of environment we have created for ourselves. things but have consistently refused these offers because I do not want to betray my own people and “wallow in the enemy’s gifts”. 3. As for your claim that I have agreed with you that “a free and sovereign Naga nation would just be a poor Naga nation…” I believe you have misunderstood me. We did talk about corruption in Nagaland and if I remember correctly, I told you that when I am talking about a free and independent Nagaland, I am not talking about a Utopian Nagaland where absolute justice will reign and there would be no corruption whatsoever. I remember saying that free or under India, there will always be corruption in fallen human societies anywhere in the world and that Nagaland will also not be an exception to this reality. As for our national wealth and assets, I know many things which I have not disclosed to you. By this , I mean our oil reserves, our mineral reserves, our precious stones including our Gold and diamonds and on top of these untapped wealth, the vast agriculture, horticulture, herbal and floral wealth etc that our nation possesses. In the light of all these assets, I for one am completely convinced that we do not need even one Paisa from India for our economic survival. Lastly, for your information, Niketu Iralu and Easterine Kire whom you have advised me to refer to, are my uncle and wife. Niketu is my father’s fourth brother and Easterine and I are temporarily separated though both of us are writing on the same political conflict in our land. Kaka D. Iralu

Shower of blessing bestowed to SSA teacher Sir,
It pains me as a common person to see how SSA teachers were welcomed by the deptt. of Education yesterday. I can’t resist but to express my deep sincere feelings for the teachers who had been suffering for the last 7-8 months without salary. It is fact and impossible to survive without money and it is the right of every individual as an employee to ask for their hard earned money at the right time. Sentimenla Aier, Dimapur

The victim told the media persons that on October 25 early morning, the police officer appeared and abused him even after he pleaded his innocence. He said the officer in an attempt to let him admit beat him up saying he was caught on CCTV footage stealing the bag. The victim said when he had asked the officer to show him the CCTV footage, the police officer started to bash him up with his hands tied. He said the police officer even accused him of being a murderer and that he would kill people if he was released. The victim claimed that the police officer in an inebriated condition slapped him several times. Further, the victim alleged that the police officer beat him up with lathis for almost an honour and in the process six to seven lathis were broken. The victim said that there were other police personnel at that time. After bashing him, he said the police officer fed him food. The victim’s aunty
said they were not aware of the whole situation until they reached the police station to bail him out after the teacher told them FIR has been withdrawn. Later, they took the victim to hospital, where he is still under treatment. M e a n w h i l e, t h e Swurotsomi Clan of Thenyizumi Village, which has taken up the case, has written a letter to the district child protection officer Kohima. The Swurotsomi Clan after narrating the incident has sought justice according to the Constitution. They have demanded a video footage copy of torture by duty officer, arrest and handing over of complainant to the youth organization and interpretation and justification of the juvenile as per the constitution/human rights. Failing to respond to its demand within 10 days, the clan warned that they would exercise the rights of their own choice. The clan also attached the birth certificate of the victim for age proof.
Civic polls to go ahead: Zeliang
(Form p-1) Zeliang said “negotiation through peaceful means is the only way to resolve the Naga issue and once it is resolved, gun culture will be a thing of the past.” Laying emphasis on having more unity and consensus at the Village Council and Town Council levels, Zeliang said this way “Nagas can really march forward as one people,
in our endeavour to find peace, progress and prosperity”. Lauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his determination to find a permanent peace to the protracted Naga political problem, Zeliang said both the Prime Minister and the Naga People’s Front believe in non-violence and to find a peaceful solution through peaceful means, pointing out NPF’s motto of Fide Non Armis--
By Faith, not by Arms. He further noted saying, “if Nagas were to wait any longer, more faction might crop up adding to the already 9 factions that we have today and that ultimately, the people would suffer”. Nagas were now fortunate, with the help and blessings of the Almighty God, of having a government at the state level without opposition he said, adding “on the Naga political
issue also, we are hopeful for an early peaceful solution, acceptable to the Naga people.” He also expressed optimism that even NSCN (K) would come back to renew the ceasefire ag reement with government of India. The chief minister was accompanied by NLA speaker, Chotisuh Sazo, Home minister Y. Patton and School Education minister, Yitachu.
(From p-1) Councils should be separately prepared for each ward of the municipality in accordance with the rules. KDCC has threatened to approach the court for legal action if their appeal was not pursued in all earnestness. Kohima District Congress contented that if eroll for assembly election was to be followed, then almost half of the electorates for urban local bodies will not get opportunity to exercise their franchise as the last municipal election in the state was held in 2004 with the creation of separate e-roll. It stated that with urbanization, thousands of electorates are migrating into the town areas, however since the Election Commission of India has strictly ordered “One Man One Vote” thousands of electorates with a view to maintain their names in the e-rolls in their respective villages do not have the registration in the erolls in Town areas despite being resident of colonies and wards.
Amend Act before holding civic polls: APO (From p-1) APO said it was of the firm belief that empowering Naga women indigenous tribes was not objectionable but acceptable to all provided the discrimination policy or hidden agenda for accommodation of all races were deleted from the above mentioned Act. In view of the above, APO has therefore appealed to the state government to make necessary amendment to the Act before conducting civic polls to reflect the actual legal position of SC and ST in Nagaland.

Further, MIP said that unless we learn to forgive each other, reconcile and unite and move forward together, our common dream will just remain a dream. Therefore, MIP observed that the need of the hour was not to seek positions but to put the national goal and aspiration above everything including ideological differences for the sake of our motherland.

condemned in the highest terms. CCoFA further said that “the brutality and high handedness of the government using water canon on peaceful demonstration led by NSSTA teachers who were only demanding that their salary, was the gravest of injustice meted out by a democratic government, acting more in an autocratic mold”. CCoFA said although the government may have promised to pay the aggrieved teachers for now, it may be only a temporary reprieve after which the teachers will be again forced to resort to agitation in order to get their salary.

In a press note, CCoFA media cell said the government has failed to respond adequately and justly to the growing grievances and discontentment of the general public in all spheres of life. Of late, the response of the government in addressing these issues by resorting to usage of brute force upon peaceful protestors was indicative of the nervousness of the government on issues of misappropriation and corruption in the government, CCoFa stated. KOHIMA, NOV 2 (NPN): In what could be termed as “extreme high-handedness” of the law enforcers, a police officer has been accused of brutally beating up one 17-year-old boy in police custody in Kohima on October 25 last. The minor student, a class-XI student of Siekhazou government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Kohima, was falsely accused of stealing bag containing academic documents along with Rs. 40,000 cash belonging to one graduate teacher. Narrating the incident to media persons, who visited the victim at his paternal uncle’s place in Kohima Wednesday evening, the victim’s aunty said the boy was innocent and he would not commit such offence or would ever steal anything that did not belong to him. She said on October 24 last, the victim visited his neighbour’s place where a house construction was on. The graduate
teacher who filed FIR was staying at that place for a month now to oversee the construction. She said on October 24 morning, they were told that the bag containing Rs. 40,000 cash and academic document was lost and accused the juvenile of stealing the bag. In spite of guardian pleading innocence of the boy, the teacher lodged a complaint with North Police station, which the victim’s guardian learnt only in the evening. Subsequently, she said the police team arrived and arrested the juvenile on October 24 evening even after they told the police that he was innocent. Upon his arrest, the victim’s guardian rushed to the North Police Station to claim his innocence, but the police reportedly informed that he has to be in the custody since interrogations were to be made. Victim’s uncle requested the police officers not to beat him or harass him as he was innocent and left the police station.

There is no cause of alarm.” Asked about the interest of state-owned Life Insurance Corporation which is among the biggest stakeholders in Tata Group firms, he said not just LIC but “lot of people are involved. There are concerns of investors, global investors because they have a major role in economy”. “There is no need to be worried. Tata group itself is a respectable group and they will solve their internal issues themselves,” Meghwal said. “And if the issue comes up before the government and regulators, (they) will take action whatever rules are there. We are still keeping watch,” he added.

New Delhi, Nov 2 (PTI): Government is keeping a “close watch” on the Tata-Mistry feud as developments at the USD 100 billion conglomerate can have implications for the economy, Minister of State for Finance Arjun Ram Meghwal said today. The government, said Meghwal, who is also incharge of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) - where corporate disputes eventually land up, will steer clear of the row as “it is an internal affair of Tata Sons”. “The government has nothing to do with it,” the minister told PTI, adding that Tata is a USD 100 billion group and the developments can have implications for the economy. “We are keeping a close watch on the basis of whatever is coming in the media and whatever information we are getting from sources,” he added. Meghwal further said the matter has so far not been referred to MCA. “Nothing in writing has

Mumbai, Nov 2 (PTI): The benchmark BSE Sensex crashed by 288 points and the NSE Nifty dipped below 8,600 mark in early trade as investors cut down their bets, tracking a weak trend in global market after a new US presidential poll showed Donald Trump ahead of market favourite Hillary Clinton. The 30-share barometer plunged 288.06 points or 1.03 per cent at 27,588.55 with all the sectoral indices led by metal, realty and oil in the negative zone, falling by up to 1.73 per cent. It had lost 64.90 points in the previous two sessions. On similar lines, the NSE Nifty cracked below 8,600-level by dropping 94.75 points or 1.10 per cent to 8,531.50. Brokers said market mood took a hit largely in tandem with global sell-off sparked by an opinion poll that put Donald Trump slightly ahead of his democratic rival Hillary Clinton in the US presidential race.
a maximum of Rs 1 crore, customers will have the facility to avail a minimum 10 per cent of the total amount as term loan and maximum 90 per cent as overdraft. ICICI Bank said the interest on term loan would be charged as per the equated monthly instalment, while on the overdraft the charges will be only on the utilised amount for the period the funds are used. On a Home Loan of Rs 50 lakh, reduction in interest rate by 0.15 per cent by SBI will help a home buyer to save Rs 542 per month and approximately Rs 2 lakh during the loan tenure of 30 years, SBI said. According to SBI, value of the savings on EMI of Rs 542 per month, if invested in a recurring deposit, will be approximately Rs 6 lakh at the end of the loan tenure.

New Delhi, Nov 2 (PTI): Gold price today zoomed to one- month high of Rs 30,950 per 10 grams, up Rs 250, tracking a solid trend overseas amid increased buying by domestic jewellers on wedding season demand. Silver ready went past the Rs 44,000-mark by jumping Rs 900 to Rs 44,100 per kg on speculative buying, while silver weeklybased delivery rallied by Rs 1,015 to Rs 43,725 per kg. Traders said buying sentiment became strong after gold rose for the fifth day to the highest level in almost a month overseas as the dollar weakened ahead of US Federal Reserve’s interest-rate decision. Globally, gold rose 0.35 per cent to USD 1,292.30 an ounce in Singapore today. Besides, persistent buying by jewellers following pick-up in demand for ornaments, at the domestic spot market, driven by ongoing wedding season propped up the upside, they said. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent purity climbed Rs 250 each to Rs 30,950 and Rs 30,800 per 10 grams -- a level last seen on October 3, when it had stood at Rs 31,200. It had gained Rs 50 yesterday.

SBI has further slashed interest rates by 0.15 per cent for its home loans up to Rs 75 lakh, while ICICI Bank is offering overdraft facility along with home loan. SBI Home Loans are cheapest in the market and provide an excellent opportunity for both new home buyers as well as those who wish to switch over their home loan to SBI to save on EMI, the bank said in a statement. SBI home loan would be available at 9.15 per cent while women borrower will get at 9.10 per cent. Another market major ICICI Bank is offering the

Haider al-Abadi Tu r k i s h m i l i t a r y sources said on Tuesday that tanks and artillery were being send to southeastern districts near the Iraqi border. The 30-vehicle convoy left Ankara for Silopi, the sources told AFP news agency, adding that it was now close to Adana province in southern Turkey. Fikri Isik, Turkey’s defence minister, said the deployment was part of Turkey’s preparation for “important developments in the region”, referring to Kurdish fighters inside the country and events in Iraq. “Turkey is preparing in advance for whatever happens [and] this is one element of that,” he was quoted by the official
Anadolu news agency as saying. Just over two weeks into the ongoing offensive to retake Mosul, ISIL’s last major stronghold in Iraq, soldiers managed to push within city limits. The Iraqi army said its forces have advanced to the eastern edge of Mosul for the first time since the ISIL, also known as ISIS, overran the city more than two years ago. The country’s Joint Operations Command said in a statement on Tuesday that its forces had entered Judaydat al-Mufti, an area on the outskirts of Mosul, about 3km away from the city’s airport. M e a n w h i l e, I r a q i State TV reported that the 9th armoured brigade had entered the district of Dweikhlah, in an attempt to open up a separate front in the battle against the armed group. Mosul was the biggest prize captured by ISIL when it swept through much of Iraq’s north and west in the summer of 2014 and declared a “caliphate” across those lands and the ones it captured in Syria.

Bag h da d, N OV 2 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : I r a q ’s prime minister has warned Turkey against provoking a confrontation while saying he does not want war. Haider al-Abadi made the comments after Turkey deployed tanks and artillery near the Iraqi border and insisted that any Turkish involvement would be a violation of national sovereignty. Turkey wants a a role in the battle to retake Mosul from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group, by virtue of being a member of the anti-ISIL coalition. However, Abadi rejected this assertion and repeatedly called on Turkey to withdraw troops it has deployed near the northern city. “The invasion of Iraq will lead to Turkey being dismantled,” Abadi said in a televised news conference on Tuesday. “We do not want war with Turkey, and we do not want a confrontation with Turkey. “But if a confrontation happens, we are ready for it. We will consider [Turkey] an enemy and we will deal with it as an enemy.”

no further applications for transfer to the UK will be handled in Calais. Their cases could now be investigated individually by UK officials once they have been transferred to reception centres in France, French President Francois Hollande told La Voix du Nord newspaper on Tuesday. France and the UK have argued over where the migrant children should go, with France urging the UK to take in more. The UK has so far taken in about 270 of the children who have relatives
in the UK or are deemed particularly vulnerable. The others will be looked after in France, Mr Hollande said. The first bus to leave Calais was headed to Carcassone in south-western France, the second to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer near Montpellier in southern France, La Voix du Nord reported. No-one will be allowed back into the dismantled camp, a staging post for irregular migrants fleeing war and poverty and trying to cross the Channel to the UK, Mr Hollande said. The final shelters in Calais were destroyed on Monday after an operation to move some 7,000 people to centres elsewhere in France. On Tuesday night riot police were called to the camp when fighting broke out between Eritrean Christian and Afghan Muslim teenagers. Police said about 100 youths were involved. Dozens of Eritreans reportedly took sanctuary in a makeshift church.

aylor Swift is the highest-paid woman in music, according to Forbes’ annual list, having earned more than double her nearest competitor Adele. The 26-year-old pop star has amassed earnings of $170m (£137.8m) over the past year, mainly thanks to a world tour named after her recent 1989 album. Adele is ranked second with estimated pretax income of $80.5m (£65.2m). Madonna comes in third place with estimated earnings of $76.5m (£62m), with Rihanna following closely behind. Beyonce is placed at five, with pre-tax income estimated at $54m (£43.8m), according to the magazine. lamour magazine has been criticised for naming U2 frontman Bono on its annual Women of the Year list. The magazine said he was the first man to be included on the list because of his campaigning for women’s rights. Bono said he was “sure he didn’t deserve it” but the battle for gender equality couldn’t be won “unless men lead it along with women”. He is on a list that also includes Gwen Stefani, actress and campaigner Zendaya and Olympic gymnast Simone Biles.

Russian athletes may be cleared for Euro Athletics
Moscow, Nov 2 (IANS): The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) may allow Russian athletes to take part in the European Athletics Championship in March next year based on personal applications, a senior Russian sports official said on Wednesday. “We are waiting for new admission criteria, which will be sent soon,” Dmitry Shlyakhtin, the president of the All-Russia Athletics Federation (ARAF), said, reports Tass. “We believe that at the 2017 European Championship we will be participating based on individual applications.” Last year, the World Anti-Doping Agency ( WA DA ) I n d e p e n d e n t Commission carried out an investigation of the activities of the ARAF, the Moscow anti-doping laboratory, the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) and the Rus-
sian Sports Ministry, and announced the results of the probe on November 9. The commission accused certain athletes and sports officials of doping abuse and involvement in other activities related to violations of international regulations on performance enhancing substances. Eventually, the IAAF decided to suspend ARAF’s membership in the global governing body of athletics and put forward a host of criteria, which the Russian ruling body of track and field sports was obliged to implement to restore its membership in the global federation. In mid-June, the IAAF Council ruled it was still too early to restore ARAF’s membership in the international organisation subsequently extending the suspension of Russian athletes from all international tournaments, including the 2016 Rio Olympics in August.

Ganguly expects whitewash against England Ko lk at a , N ov 2 (IANS): Former skipper Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday cautioned England from getting whitewashed in the upcoming five-match Test series, starting November 9 at Rajkot, when they face an in-form Indian side. The legendary southpaw expects India to continue their superb form at home which they displayed during their 3-0 clean sweep of New Zealand in the recently-concluded Test Series. “India are playing superb cricket. I am expecting another whitewash like the one against New Zealand. They (England) should be worried,” Ganguly told reporters here. Ganguly’s comments echoed former England captain Michael Vaughan, who on Tuesday had said England are bereft of topclass spin bowlers and their batsmen have struggled to combat the turning ball against Bangladesh. Vaughan said England need to ‘park the bus’ in order to stave off the threat from the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. Meanwhile, hot on the heels of Bengal’s backto-back outright victories in the ongoing Ranji Trophy, Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Ganguly welcomed the boys home with a high tea session here. Mumbai, Chennaiyin play 1-1 draw in ISL
Mumbai City players celebrate after Leo Costa scored the equalizer, Wednesday.
C hennai , N ov 2 (IANS): Substitute Leo Costa scored a screamer just two minutes from time as Mumbai City FC rescued a point against Chennaiyin FC with a 1-1 draw in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) football tournament here on Wednesday. Je j e L a l p e k h l u a ’s second-half strike seemed like it would be enough for Chennaiyin FC to edge past Mumbai City FC and move joint top alongside Atletico de Kolkata at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
Mumbai never seemed into the game until Costa came off the bench to score a wonderful long ranger in the 88th minute to win Mumbai’s first ever point in the ISL against Chennaiyin FC. The draw left Mumbai City on the second spot with 12 points, the same as leaders Atletico de Kolkata, while Chennaiyin FC have 10 points in their kitty and are sandwiched between Delhi Dynamos in third and NorthEast United FC in fifth, both with the same
points. In four previous clashes between the two teams, Chennaiyin FC had emerged triumphant in all games and for most part of their last clash, seemed like the better side. With chief coach Marco Materazzi suspended for this clash for his ‘misconduct against opponents or persons other than match officials’ as defined by the AIFF Disciplinary Committee, the defending champions took it upon themselves to continue their dominance
Rio inaugurates 2-day state level kung-fu championship
Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, NOV 2 (NPN): Two-day 29th annual State Level Tournament 2016 of All Nagaland Shaolin Kung-Fu Association (ANSKA) got underway after it was declared open by Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio here at Badminton Indoor State Stadium, Wednesday. Rio in his speech dispelled the wrong notion surrounding martial arts saying martial art is an exercise to balance the mind and body; to synchronise heart and brain and therefore shouldn’t be perceived as violent. He urged upon the practitioners to utilise the art to defend and protect the weak.
The former chief minister remarked that Nagas were impulsive-we cannot control our anger, our emotions- and highlighted how martial arts could help in having control over oneself. Rio also pointed out the positive attribute of martial arts-discipline, healthy lifestyle, character, mental and physical strength. He emboldened the participants to learn with dedication and become masters in the art. Rio exhorted the participants that Shaolin KuhgFu would make them a better person thereby a better society. In his concluding remark, Rio reminded the players that their participation was equally important regardless of whether they
win or lose and urged them to uphold the true spirit of sportsmanship. He later declared the tournament open. The participants (Kohima Branch) displayed spectacular stunts and moves in their demonstration. St. Joseph Orphanage Home performed the opening demonstration. Earlier, the function was hosted by Caroline, invocation by Rev. Fr O.C. Abraham, while dy. grand master chief general ANSKA, Neivo-o Nicholas Soru delivered the welcome address. Hundreds of martial artists’ from across the state are taking part in the twoday event which will culminate Thursday.
over the visitors. For the opening 45 minutes, Chennaiyin FC dominated but could not break the deadlock. Maurizio Peluso was in fine form up front and seemed to create the best chance for Jeje in the 14th minute when he slid a ball to the Indian striker but Gerson Vieira did well to come from behind and clear the ball. Peluso then had Mumbai goalkee per Albino Gomes at full-stretch to keep a free-kick away in one of the six shots that
Pratul Joshi wins maiden title at Bahrain Challenge
NEW DELHI, NOV 2 (PTI): Young Indian shuttler Pratul Joshi clinched his maiden international title by notching up a hardfought win over Aditya Joshi in the finals of the $17,500 Bahrain International Challenge badminton tournament at Segayya in Bahrain. In a fiercely fought battle between siblings, it was 22-year-old Pratul who emerged as the winner after he prevailed 21-17, 12-21, 21-15 over Aditya in the summit clash which lasted for an hour on Sunday. In the semifinals, Pratul, seeded third, had beaten compatriot Siddhar th Thakur 21-16, 22-20, while fourth seed Aditya stunned top seed Anand Pawar 21-19, 21-7.
Chennaiyin had in the first session. Mumbai City did not have any shot on target in the first session but marquee player Diego Forlan did come close in the 36th minute. The veteran Uruguayan striker made space for himself just outside the box and let go of a powerful shot which Chennaiyin FC goalkeeper Duwayne Kerr did well to tip over for a corner. Chennaiyin FC had their noses in front in the second session. Peluso’s corner-kick should have been cleared by the Mumbai defence. But two defenders simply watched and another one missed the flight of the ball, allowing Jeje space to head the ball past the goalkeeper in the 51st minute. The defending champions should have killed the match in the 72nd minute but Dudu Omagbemi missed from close range. Jeje had shown remarkable composure to win the ball, hold on to it and then slide it for Dudu who could not beat the onrushing goalkeeper. Mumbai City made the best use of that let-off and found the equaliser in the 88th minute. Leo Costa took the ball from about 25 yards out and launched a powerful left-footer which found the top corner of the net, past a diving Kerr.

India draw Iran 1-1 in AFC U-19 Qualifiers
HANOI, NOV 2 (PTI): A spirited India on Wednesday played out a 1-1 draw against Iran in the first Group D match of the AFC Women’s U-19 Championship 2017 Qualifiers. Kashmina gave India the lead in the 59th minute while Mokhtarifar got the equaliser for Iran in the 81st minute. India were down to nine players on the field at that moment
as Shetty and captain Ratanbala Devi were being treated outside the playing arena. K a s h m i n a ’s g o a l came straight out of the text book. It was a counter-attack from which Shetty sped past her marker on the right flank and essayed it for Kashmina in the box. The nippy striker took her time, sidestepped, and
neatly placed the ball into the net.\ Kashmina, however, should have finished the match off when she beat the off-side trap and found herself in a one-toone situation with rival Goalkeeper Sefati in the 87th minute. But the goalie managed to get her palm on the way as the ball missed by a whisker. India next play hosts Vietnam on November 4.
Pandya handed maiden Test call-up
Hardik Pandya
NEW DELHI, NOV 2 (AGENCIES): The unavailability of KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan has extended Gautam Gambhir’s lease on life as an international cricketer, but the BCCI selectors sprung a surprise by including the uncapped Hardik Pandya in India’s 15-man squad for the first two Tests of the five-match series against
England staring November 9 in Rajkot. A thigh strain to Rohit Sharma, which reportedly will keep him out of action for six to eight weeks, has apparently forced the selectors to include Pandya as an all-round option. MSK Prasad, the chief selector, said of Pandya’s inclusion: “Pandya’s pace has increased, he is moving
the ball, his batsmanship has improved. He is one allrounder we thought is an equally competent bowler and batsman. And a good fielder too, much quicker and better bowler than Stuart. With form and fitness, Hardik is a better option.” Pandya, 23, made his ODI and T20I debuts this year and has been included for the first time in India’s Test squad. The Baroda allrounder has played 16 first-class matches, scoring 727 runs at 27.96 with a best of 90 and 22 wickets at 33.72, with a solitary five-wicket haul. The uncapped pair of Haryana allrounder Jayant Yadav and Karnataka batsman Karun Nair - who came in as replacements for Ishant Sharma
and Dhawan against New Zealand - have been retained. This means that Virat Kohli has four spinners to choose from, with Jayant Yadav’s offspin following R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra. Gambhir, 35, made a return to international cricket after more than two years when he was drafted into the Test squad for the second match against New Zealand in Kolkata last month, as replacement for the injured Rahul. India squad: Virat Kohli (capt), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Amit Mishra, Cheteshwar Pujara, Gautam Gambhir, Ajinkya Rahane, Karun Nair, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Ishant Sharma, Murali Vijay, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Hardik Pandya, Jayant Yadav.
Atletico, Arsenal win; Man City beat Barca in CL Madrid, Nov 2 (IANS): Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Paris SaintGermain all won their respective matches to assure themselves of berths in the knockout stages of the 2016-2017 Champions League with two matches left to play. What remains to be determined is the order of the finish, reports Efe. Atletico, who remain unbeaten and untied, lead Group D with 12 points, three ahead of Bayern. Arsenal and PSG are tied in Group A with 10 points each, though the Gunners have the edge on goal difference. Barcelona, meanwhile, will have to wait to qualify after losing 3-1 to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, where they came from behind to get a measure of revenge for the 4-0 drubbing they suffered at Barça’s hands two weeks ago in Camp Nou. City, under the direction of former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola, went into Tuesday’s clash badly needing points as insurance against an early exit from the elite European competition. Guardiola stuck to his highpress strategy and while that contributed to Lionel Messi’s strike for Barça 20 minutes in, the approach eventually paid dividends. Recent acquisition Ilkay Manchester City’s Aleksandar Kolarov, right jumps to head the ball with Gundogan equalized for the hosts just before half-time and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi in Manchester, England, Tuesday. (AP/PTI)
Kevin de Bruyne put City up 2-1 early in the second. Gundogan added an insurance goal with 15 minutes left in regulation to boost City to 7 points from four matches, 3 ahead of Borussia Mönchengladbach, who conceded late against Celtic and had to settle for a 1-1 draw. Barcelona have nine points. French international Antoine Griezmann scored both goals -- the second in stoppage time -- to give Atletico a 2-1 home win over a surprisingly resilient Rostov side. The result leaves last year’s runner-up with 12 points, compared with 9 for Bayern Munich, who beat PSV Eindhoven 2-1 on Tuesday with a pair of goals from Robert Lewandowski. Arsenal fell behind 2-0 to Ludogorets in the first 15 minutes of the game in Sofia, but pulled even by the end of the first half, though the winning goal came only in the 88th minute, when Mesut Özil eluded the goalkeeper and two defenders to make it 3-2 for the visitors. PSG, like Atleti, needed a goal in stoppage time to prevail 2-1 over Basel. In Group B, Besiktas held visiting Napoli 1-1 on Tuesday to tighten up the race for the top two spots. The Turkish squad climbed to 6 points, one behind the Italian side and Benfica, who each have 7. The Portuguese club beat Dynamo Kiev 1-0 in Lisbon.
