Acharya graces Tokhu Emong ‘Time to showcase Nagaland as a vibrant state’ D I M A P U R , N OV 7 (NPN): Nagaland Governor P.B. Acharya on Monday said it was now high time to showcase Nagaland as a vibrant Nagaland, since God has blessed the state with all the talents not only dance and drama but in every aspect of life. He said this while addressing the Tokhu Emong festival at Wokha as chief guest, where it was celebrated with pomp and gaiety. Governor said Nagas were second to none in every aspect of life, but added that at present they were known only because of their rich culture of dance and drama. He also called upon the people to, as they celebrate, thank the farmers for the wonderful agricultural produces and the Almighty for all his blessings. Acharya said if people understood the real significance of festival then their strength to march ahead will be more meaningful.

CNA not a Naga organisation: NPO DIMAPUR, NOV 7 (NPN): On the expiry of deadline served on Council of Naga Affairs (CNA), Myanmar to substantiate the allegation, the Naga Public Organization (NPO) Myanmar has declared that from now on it would not consider CNA as Naga organization so long as the “painted/non-Naga is involved in the setup.” CNA had alleged that NPO was carrying out activities that were detrimental to the unity of Naga people at the behest of RAW and IB of India, and in Myanmar, they were closely supported by the embassy of India and junta-backed USDP. In a press release, NPO chairman, Harti Yangli, and general secretary, Jojo, said the Naga Public Organization, which focuses on the pledge of rural populace and grounded on the mandate of all seven Naga major tribes of Myanmar, would never be moved by such cheap allegation. NPO said its stand and commitment was to serve Nagas “unconditionally and without any reproach”. The organisation stated that on October 21, 2016, CSA information and public relation officer, Kejung Tangshang, called NPO chairman and told him that he resigned from the Council in August.

He also maintained that Wokha was blessed by God with plenty of natural resources and wonderful places. “If we make best use of the area and given natural resources we can make the society prosperous,” Acharya said. For any society or the nation to be prosperous, he said three important things -- education, electricity and employment – were very important. To address the needs of the state, the governor said the most important thing

was peaceful. The governor appealed to the Lotha Hoho and all the Hohos at this crucial hour to come together and be united and see that permanent peace comes to Nagaland. He also reminded of the Prime Minister’s assertion that unless North East developed India cannot progress. Earlier, the chief guest released a booklet on the significance of Tokhu. On the occasion, Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) vice president

O.Shilu Jamir also delivered a short speech. The Lotha Hoho also submitted at request memorandum to the Governor declaration of GolaghatWokha-Bokajan Road as National Highway. Home ministry to use ‘Daesh’ instead of ISIS NEW DELHI, NOV 7 (AGENCIES): The Home Ministry will use ‘Daesh’ for the dreaded Islamic State terror group instead of ISIS in all its correspondence. An in-principle decision has been taken in this regard and necessary instruction will be issued soon, official sources said. Daesh is an acronym for the Arabic phrase alDawla al-Islamiya al-Iraq al-Sham (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant). Essentially, it is another word for ISIS - which the terror organisation does not favour. The word is similar to the Arabic words ‘Daes’, meaning ‘one who crushes something underfoot’ and ‘Dahes’, translated as ‘one who sows discord’. Daesh or ISIS has become one of the most brutal terror groups in the world which killed hundreds of people after occupying a large area in Syria and Iraq in recent times. Several Indians have also joined the group while some other Indians were radicalised or recruited online by it.

Trained teachers needed for quality education: Yitachu Correspondent

KOHIMA, NOV 7 (NPN): Minister for School Education and SCERT Yitachu in a startling disclosure on Monday said 42% of around 24,000 government teachers in Nagaland were untrained while 15% of government schools numbering 172 primary and middle schools were being run by single teacher. This has been a major stumbling block to provide quality education, said Yitachu while addressing the two-day national seminar, sponsored by Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), on “quality teacher education: issues and challenges of two year B.Ed programme” organized by department of teacher education school of humanities and education Nagaland University, Kohima held at Meriema campus. He also said it would take 10 to 15 years to train up all untrained teachers since the current intake for B.Ed course in the state was less than 1000 seats annually. Yitachu said it is a serious matter that recruitment

of unqualified teachers in education department has only become like a source to solve the unemployment issue, compromising the careers of students. On the other hand, he lamented that though Right To Education (RTE) policy of the Central government has improved infrastructures besides upgrading and opening of new schools, the enrolment in 622 schools were below 30 students. Yitachu also expressed concern that the No Detention Policy has affected the education system in the state, where students get promoted to higher classes despite their dismal perfor-

Dengue cases: 54 persons I&B Ministry puts NDTV India ban on hold test positive in Dimapur Correspondent KOHIMA, NOV 7 (NPN): Dimapur district has recorded an alarming rise in the number of Dengue cases when a total of 54 persons were tested positive during the last two weeks alone. This was disclosed by State officer, Vector Borne Disease Control Programme, Dr. Kevichusa who informed Nagaland Post that out of a total of 334 persons suspected of being infected, the blood samples tested confirmed that 54 were positive. Dr. Kevichusa said the officers of the department were on their toes to spread awareness and also to collect reports/samples of suspected Dengue cases in private hospitals and clinics under Dimapur district. On receipt of such information about patients suspected of having Dengue, he said blood samples were collected and sent for Rapid Card Test to the Sentinel Surveillance Site Lab, District Hospital, Dimapur with the ELISA Test for confirmation. Till date, he said there was no official confirmation of any Dengue related death. Dr. Kevichusa also pointed out

that any deaths caused by Dengue or Malaria needed to be investigated before making any such conclusion. He also added that to tackle Dengue virus there was no particular medicine for treatment. However, since Dengue patients normally survive if sufficient care was taken, he expressed optimism that the required facilities should be available in all hospitals. Dr. Kevichusa also informed that there was no report from other districts about Dengue except Dimapur till date. He also disclosed that all the 54 patients, tested positive for Dengue received required treatment and were recovering. He also informed that entomologist were doing in-depth study for the mosquito (Aedes) in all the colonies or areas that are infested by mosquitoes. In the entire north east, he said Assam and Meghalaya were still under severe grip of high incidence of Dengue. Minister of health and family welfare P. Longon, when contacted admitted that he was not aware of the latest situation but was confident that the officers involved were keeping the matter under control.

NEW DELHI, NOV 7 ( AG E N C I E S ) : A m i d widespread condemnation over the one-day ban imposed on NDTV India, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) on Monday decided to put on hold its order against the prominent Hindi channel, according to news agency PTI. The decision was taken following a meeting between I&B Minister M Venkaiah Naidu and NDTV promoter Prannoy Roy. Earlier in the day, NDTV has challenged the one-day ban by the government after an inter-ministerial panel concluded that the channel had revealed crucial and “strategically sensitive” information when the terror attack on Pathankot IAF base was being carried out. The channel has moved the Supreme Court

in this regard. In a report on its website, NDTV has said that it refuted the allegations and “pointed out that other channels and newspapers reported the same information”. The ban is supposed to be implemented from 00:01 hrs on November 9, 2016 till 00:01 hrs of November 10, 2016. This is the first ever such order against a TV channel over its coverage of a terror attack, the norms regarding which were notified in 2015. The Editors’ Guild has condemned the ban and demanded that the decision be withdrawn immediately, saying it was reminiscent of the emergency period. “The ostensible reason for the order as reported is that the channel’s coverage of Pathankot terror attack on January 2, 2016 that the government claims gave

out sensitive information to the handlers of terrorists. NDTV, in its response to a show cause by the government, has maintained that its coverage was sober and did not carry any information that had not been covered by the rest of the media, and was in the public domain,” the statement read. It added that the decision to take the channel off air for a day was a violation of the freedom of media. The government, however, has defended the ban, saying freedom of press is important but the nation comes first. “We support freedom of press in a democracy but the nation comes first. There cannot be any compromise on national security,” BJP national secretary Shrikant Sharma said. The decision drew sharp condemnation from the Opposition.

mance. In order to tackle the issues, particularly to provide quality education, he said the state government has taken the initiative to train the untrained teachers, wherein in-service teachers are given the opportunity to take up B.Ed training. Despite the need for more institutions to accommodate in-service teachers to be trained, he said the government would not be able to encourage opening of more B.Ed colleges in the state, keeping in mind that institutions would only become commercialized and not focussed on imparting quality training. He urged upon the teachers to be truthful, sincere and to change their attitude to bring in positive change with commitment. Dean faculty of education S.V University AP, Prof. P.A. Reddy in his keynote address maintained that in order to sustain growth and development, quality education was a must and which placed great responsibility at the hands of teachers. He however added that the goal could only be achieved with trained teachers. (Cont’d on p-7)

India cannot afford corruption: PM Modi NEW DELHI, NOV 7 (AGENCIES): Asserting that a poor country like India cannot afford luxury of corruption, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the State should be policy-driven and not based on whims of an individual. Addressing the valedictory function of vigilance awareness week organised by CVC, he emphasised on use of Aadhaar and other information technology-based applications to check corruption. “When we make rules and if there is any ambiguity in it which is open to people’s inference then it opens door for corruption. That is why State should be policy-driven...” he said. Modi said if the government emphasises on policy-driven State then there will be less scope for interpretation by an individual. In an advice to government departments, Modi said people must be involved while making draft laws for any governance- related matters. “While making laws if we use many minds then the law would be good. Secrecy does not matter in this,” he said.

Can’t impose yoga on anyone, says Supreme Court NSCN (K) warns 3 against

NEW DELHI, NOV 7 (PTI/IANS): The Supreme Court on Monday said that it cannot impose yoga on anyone or frame its curriculum as it declined to entertain a PIL seeking direction to make yoga a part (Cont’d on p-7) of school syllabus. A lawyer, who sought making the teaching of Yoga compulsor y in schools, fumbled when the Supreme Court put him to test on his knowledge about the ancient exercise. “Which is the last ‘aasana’ in Yoga,” asked a bench headed by Chief Justice T S Thakur. As the lawyer fumbled, the bench said, “it is ‘shavasana’. You espouse the cause of Yoga when you do not know this.” The bench asked him to withdraw his plea seeking framing of a ‘National Yoga Policy’ and making Yoga “Our politicians are more compulsory for students at home talking of political of Class I-VIII across the solution than economic country and directed him solution.” to intervene as a party in a

pending similar case. “You (lawyer) withdraw your petition here and file an intervention application in the pending case,” the bench, also comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud and L Nageswara Rao, said. But senior advocate M N Krisnamani, representing lawyer and Delhi BJP spokesperson Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay who has

filed the PIL, sought issuance of notice on the plea. Krishnamani said “the fact that I do not practice ‘Yoga’ should not come in the way of a right cause.” The bench then referred to the prevailing situation in Delhi and adjoining areas and, in lighter vein, said “does anyone do yoga in this polluted atmosphere”. At the outset of the

hearing, the bench expressed its unwillingness to entertain the PIL saying “we cannot impose Yoga on anyone. You go and persuade people to do it. We cannot be framing curriculum.” It is for the government and academicians to decide what should be included in the school curricula, the bench said. At the end of the brief hearing, it

however allowed Upadhyay to seek intervention in a similar plea pending before a bench headed by Justice MB Lokur, which would hear it on Nov 29. Upadhyay, in his plea, had sought a direction to the Ministry of Human Resources Development, NCERT, NCTE and the CBSE to “provide standard textbooks of ‘Yoga and Health Education’ for students of Class I-VIII keeping in spirit various fundamental rights such as right to life, education and equality. “‘Right to Health’ is an integral part of Right to Life under the Article 21. It includes protection, prevention and cure of the health and is a minimum requirement to enable a person to live with human dignity. State has a obligation to provide health facilities to all the citizens, especially to children and adolescents...,” the plea said.

View citizenship issue from compassionate stance: Joy

Correspondent

Diphu, Nov 7: Howraghat MLA Joy Ram Engleng has said that Bengali Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, Jains, Sikhs and other religiously oppressed communities of Bangladesh seeking asylum in India will not be of any threat for the country. Talking to reporters, he said “when British India was divided on the basis of religion in 1947 many non Muslim people preferred to stay back in Pakistan, Bangladesh (then East Pakistan), Afghanistan but later they became victims of radical Islamic law of these countries”. In contrast, he asserted, Muslim population of India feels that India is most secured country for them. Present BJP government is committed for the well being of these people and this won’t be a threat for the people of this country,

he added. “The suffering Bengali Hindus, Christians, Jains and Sikhs of Indian origin will not damage the culture, language or the demography of any state of India including Assam. Rather it will help in retaining symmetry of demography where a particular community has amplified very speedily and has overwhelmed all other community. One should, therefore, view citizenship issue from compassionate stance keeping aside the political end. Assam will never be burdened by these people. Once they are given citizenship, they are free to settle in any place of India” said Joy. Talking about development, he said that it will not be right to judge the performance of the new Assam government which has assumed power just for few months.

BJP has ‘notorious goondas’, says Mayawati LUCKNOW, NOV 7 (PTI): Stung by unrelenting barbs of BJP chief Amit Shah, BSP supremo Mayawati today hit back saying the saffron party has “notorious goondas” and everyone was aware of Shah’s history as well. She also trained guns at the Samajwadi Party government, saying in the interest of the state, the chief minister should rise above oneupmanship and family feud and look after law-and-order situation of the state. She also said any move by SP to enter into a grand alliance proved that it had accepted defeat even before the polls. “BJP mein itney namigirami goonday hain...main naam ginaney lag jaoon... aur iski shuruwat Gujarat sey hoti hai...Amit Shah ka kya itihas raha hai yeh aapko pata hai (BJP has a number of notorious criminals...If I started counting names...The list starts with Gujarat...You already know Amit Shah’s history),” she told newspersons here.

Neighbouring states of Haryana and Punjab also put the blame on Delhi. “Stubble burning is 20 per cent of the problem. Delhi’s responsibility is 80 per cent. Burning of petrol/diesel, coal, wood, dry leaves and of garbage at a waste disposal ground led to pollution in Delhi. Burning of crackers can be added to that as well,” Dave said. Focus on env in smart city plans: Naidu NEW DELHI, NOV 7 (PTI): With national capital region grappling with heavy smog, Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu today strongly pitched for keeping environmental aspects in mind while framing smart city plans. Stressing that the severe pollution level in the NCR region is due to neglect of environment over a long period of time, he said everybody needs to do “their bit” to tackle the situation. “We have to be cautious about the environmental aspect also (in smart cities). Environment and development must go hand in hand. If you neglect environment what will happen you have the example now. But this is not a one day affair,” he said. “Environmental issues that have come up now are not a political issue or a oneday affair. Every one of us from citizen to the Centre, from cities to states, everybody has to do their bit to tackle the issue,” Naidu said while addressing ‘DoPT inservice training programme on smart cities’ here.

NEW DELHI, NOV 7 (PTI): The Supreme Court today granted four more weeks to the Centre and six states to file replies on a plea seeking action against so-called cow vigilantes who were allegedly indulging in violence and committing atrocities against Dalits and minorities. The apex court granted time to the Centre and the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Jharkhand to file their replies to a plea filed by Congress leader Tehseen S Poonawalla, which also sought direction to them to take action against the alleged violence by these vigilantes. The court had on October 21 agreed to examine the plea filed by Poonawalla which said violence committed by these ‘Gau Raksha’ groups have reached such proportions that even Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently declared them as people who were “destroying the society”. The plea alleged that these groups were committing atrocities against Dalits and minorities in the name of protection of cows and other bovines and they needed to be “regulated and banned in the interest of social harmony, public morality and law and order in the country”.

CWC recommends Rahul’s elevation as Congress president NEW DELHI, NOV 7 (PTI): Rahul Gandhi’s appointment as Congress president today appeared imminent with members of the Congress Working Committee, its highest decision making body, unanimously voicing “strong sentiment” for his elevation for the first time at a meeting which Sonia Gandhi gave a miss. The new system has come into place as the Commission has digitised over 1.5 lakh files with it, allowing people to file appeals and complaints online without any requirement of hard copy. “Government must be sensitive, corruption free and accountable to people of the country. Earlier, speaking on the occasion, Minister of State for Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh said although there is no pendency, the filing of such grievances has gone up from about two lakh annually when the new government was formed to eight lakh now. Quoting a couplet of Mirza Ghalib, Singh, while taking a veiled dig at UPA government, said people file grievances because they have hope of them being resolved.

the elevation would happen before UP assembly polls. Sonia Gandhi has created a record by being at the helm of the 130-year-old organisation since early 1998 succeeding the late Sitaram Kesri who was ousted by the CWC. “It is for the first time that the CWC is making such a recommendation. We are sure that the Congress President would give it proper care and attention”, Antony said replying to a volley of questions on the issue. Surjewala said senior CWC members would personally meet the party chief as a “follow up” action regarding their recommendation for Rahul’s elevation. NEW DELHI, NOV 7 (PTI): Union Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave today said Delhi is responsible for the 80 per cent of the worsening air in the city and that there is a need for ending the blame game over the issue. At a meeting of the environment ministers of Delhi-NCR states to find a solution to combat the problem, he said crop stubble burning contributed just 20 per cent of the pollutants.

problem at hand. “I always make an attempt to put an end to blame game. Sensationalism and blame game have become a strategy. People get affected by this. They are having trouble breathing. Deal with that first. I want that the states carry out their responsibilities,” he said. The minister said an “Environment Protection Calendar”, listing measures to be adopted by all states on a monthly basis, will be prepared in January. Haryana Environment Minister Vipul Goel said vehicular emission was the root cause of the problem. “It is definitely not due to stubble burning. Moreover, its rate has dropped to extremely low levels. There is neither wind nor pollution in the areas where the stubble is being burned. “Pollution in Delhi is due to traffic in the NCR region. On our part, we have banned construction activities in Gurgaon and Faridabad, and intensified drive against old vehicles,” Goel said.

rorism in all its forms and manifestations, and stressed that there can be no justification for acts of terror on any grounds. They shared the view that there should be zero tolerance to terrorism, the statement said. Acknowledging that terrorism and violent extremism posed one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, Modi and May called for concerted global action against them “without selectivity”. They pitched for urgent measures to counter and prevent the spread of terrorism, violent extremism and radicalisation. The two Prime Ministers affirmed that the fight against terrorism should not only seek to disrupt and bring to justice terrorists, terror organisations and networks, but should also identify, hold accountable and take strong measures against all those who encourage, support and finance terrorism, provide sanctuary to terrorists and terror groups, and falsely extol their virtues. The statement also noted that both India and the UK had suffered the human cost of terrorism and now worked in partnership to tackle the threat terrorism and violent extremism posed.

India, UK denounce terrorism NEW DELHI, NOV 7 (PTI): India and the UK today agreed to start a strategic dialogue on home affairs issues covering areas like visas and organised crime even as they voiced concern over terrorism, which they saw as threat that was not a “limited security challenge” and whose arc spread “across nations and regions”. After holding extensive talks which covered a wide range issues including trade, investment, security and defence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his British counterpart Theresa May called for Pakistan to bring the perpetrators of the November 2008 terrorist strike in Mumbai and 2016 Pathankot attack to justice. Addressing a joint press event with May, Modi said they discussed ways to purposefully work together to combat the growing forces of radicalisation and terrorism. “We agreed that it is not a limited security challenge. Its arc of threat spreads across nations and regions. Terrorists move across borders with ease and endanger the entire humanity. “I conveyed our deep concern to Prime Minister May regarding cross-border terrorism and the need for

elhi has been plagued with its worst smog in 17 years with hundreds of people, especially children suffering from breathing problem. This has prompted the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), a green body to ask the Delhi government to issue health alerts and convey that children should stay indoors as there is a state of health emergency due to peaking air pollution. The visibility in the national capital has also reduced to a haze while sunlight has been blanked for days together. According to environmentalists the smog comprises of a complex mix of pollution from human activities (vehicle emissions, industry, construction and residential fuel burning) as well as natural sources like dust and sea salt. The bursting of pre-diwali crackers days ahead had raised the pollution level very high with the atmosphere covered with smoke across all roads and streets and which percolated to homes. The cracker smoke caused burning sensation on the eyes and causing coughs. The level of cracker pollution shot sky high on October 30, diwali and the continuous sounds would have probably caused many heart patients to suffer tremendously. While the pollution from the usual vehicle and industrial emissions were bad enough, the burning of paddy and rice stalks across Punjab, Haryana, UP and Delhi contributed greatly to the rising health hazard when Delhi and nearby areas were covered under a thick blanket of smog. Pollutants cause respiratory disease like Asthma and cardiac-vascular problems. High temperatures encourage the spread of infectious diseases like dengue. Meteorologists explain the phenomenon as a condition where the winter, cool air causes “inversions” that stagnant the air and trap man-made pollution close to the ground. The densely urbanized regions of Punjab and Haryana where farmers burn the straw in their fields added and pull this pollution into Delhi. The concerns over such conditions are not restricted to Delhi or other metro cities. The signs of pollution and the consequent dangers exist in many towns and cities. Even the biggest city of the north east-Guwahati- has growing environmental problems which are not being addressed with due seriousness. Man-made pollution is the number one cause for the problems that humans faced today. Beyond exhausts, man has also cause grave danger to the water by oil spills, acid rains, gas emissions and dumping of dangerous chemicals and effluents into the underground soil. The pollution of water both over and under ground pose serious threat to health of humans, and animals. Polluted water is the biggest health risk of the world and poses threat to the quality of life and public health. Rivers get polluted from the run-off which contain toxins, chemicals and disease carrying organisms. The multi-faceted problems due to migration of population from high density urban areas to low density rural areas continues to rise as more people from rural areas migrate to urban areas. This has created urban sprawls which also cause land degradation, increased traffic, environmental issues and health issues. The ever growing demand of land displaces natural environment consisting of flora and fauna instead of being replaced. The condition in Delhi is a serious warning to urban dwellers and the measures are proving to be too little and too late.

DailyDevotion The Undetected Sacredness of Circumstances We know that all things work together for good to those who love God… —Romans 8:28 The circumstances of a saint’s life are ordained of God. In the life of a saint there is no such thing as chance. God by His providence brings you into circumstances that you can’t understand at all, but the Spirit of God understands. God brings you to places, among people, and into certain conditions to accomplish a definite purpose through the intercession of the Spirit in you. Never put yourself in front of your circumstances and say, “I’m going to be my own providence here; I will watch this closely, or protect myself from that.” All your circumstances are in the hand of God, and therefore you don’t ever have to think they are unnatural or unique. Your part in intercessory prayer is not to agonize over how to intercede, but to use the everyday circumstances and people God puts around you by His providence to bring them before His throne, and to allow the Spirit in you the opportunity to intercede for them. In this way God is going to touch the whole world with His saints. Am I making the Holy Spirit’s work difficult by being vague and unsure, or by trying to do His work for Him? I must do the human side of intercession— utilizing the circumstances in which I find myself and the people who surround me. I must keep my conscious life as a sacred place for the Holy Spirit. Then as I lift different ones to God through prayer, the Holy Spirit intercedes for them. Your intercessions can never be mine, and my intercessions can never be yours, “…but the Spirit Himself makes intercession” in each of our lives (Romans 8:26). And without that intercession, the lives of others would be left in poverty and in ruin.

or years and years the government put off the decision to make varakh, silver leaf, by machine on the grounds that no machines were available. Finally, this year a historic decision has been taken and the FSSAI notification has come that no varakh can be made except by machine. The person responsible for this change (apart from me!) is Surendra Karnavat, a diamond jeweller in America. He and his wife were members of the Rajasthan Association of America and came to India in Vasundhara Raje’s first term as Chief Minister, lured by the promise that they would get all help to start a machine based varakh industry. He was given none of the promised assistance and could only start in a very small way. However, he did not give up hope and started by supplying only a few shops in his own area. I heard of him, and met him, while campaigning to have varakh made in a vegetarian way. Then, when the FSSAI started to take the matter seriously, he came in to show them how it could be

done properly. The varakh industry is a huge one. India uses over 300 tonnes of silver leaves in paan, chawanprash, tobacco products, ayurvedic medicines, mithais and temples. It is used in Germany on food (the food number is E 175), France on photo frames. In Japan it is everywhere – interiors, tea, instruments, frescos, temples. In fact, Kanazawa has a Gold Leaf Museum. The whole of Southeast Asia uses varakh, to pay homage to Lord Buddha. It is used on chocolates, cocktails and liquors – German Goldwasser and the Swiss Goldschlager are examples -- soups, salads, ice creams, coffees. Now, gold leaf has become a part ofanti-ageing creams, face packs and foundations. The use of the gilded leaf is endless. Gold leaf has been used for jewellery, for art decorations, picture frames and gilded art. We have used it in our glass paintings. But we don’t export it, because we make it in a dirty – and now illegal – manner. ABP News has done a piece on it, which is doing the Whatsapp rounds so you

Major employment area can see it. 300 tonnes translates like this: one kilo of silver has 225 gaddis (bundles). One gaddi is 150 sheets of silver varakh. That means, 6.75 crore gaddis every year. The world market asks for 300 kg of gold varakh every day Till now, the varakh makers are in slaughterhouses. They are all a sect of Muslims called Pannigars. They select cattle by feeling their intestines while they are alive, and then having them cut and extracting the intestines while they are hot. These intestines are made into pouches, and silver is beaten in between them till it is thin enough to be sold. The method is filthy and certainly not pure silver. When you eat it, you place yourself at risk. The second method

that is used by most mithai sellers – who will pretend that they are getting the varakh from vegetarian sources (which is what the president of the mithai association claimed to me) – is to beat the silver between plastic sheets. However, this is also a filthy meat based method, as the plastic is coated with animal fat for lubrication and is also then covered with leather. The varakh that emerges is also not hygienic or fit for eating. Karnavathas replaced leather / animal fat with a specially engineered paper which is translucent and smooth. This paper is fed into a machine and the process of making varakh is completely mechanized, without coming into contact with the sweaty human hand. The leaf has a

thickness of 0.18 microns in silver and 0.1 microns in gold, making it of international standards even for gold fillings and ayurvedic medicines. The machine has taken 15 years to develop and meets the guidelines of the US FDA. He is one of the very few people in the world who has the knowledge of producing varakh paper (also known as interleaf paper or carbon coated paper). He wants to help low cost machines to be produced and installed, and train unskilled labour – perhaps even the same people who have been sitting for years at slaughterhouses and taking out the intestines of freshly killed buffaloes and cows. He believes there is scope for at least 2 lakh people to be employed, and that this is the only way for the varakh industry to become a clean, hygienic, well managed organized sector, instead of being a filthy unorganized secretive sector that operates in the shadows of butcheries. This could also be a major employment area for women, as gold and silver leaf have to be transferred from inter-

leaf paper to tissue paper, and this delicate exchange can be best handled by a woman. Gold and silver leaf can be major exports from India and earn foreign exchange. Karnavat was invited by the Chinese government to establish a unit and train the Chinese. He refused because he wants to make India the silver/gold leaf hub of the world. This seems to me to be an excellent potential industry and, now that Mudra loans are available to small businessmen, this should be taken advantage of. In fact, if you are a large mithai maker you should establish your own ancillary varakh leaf factory. If you want to get in touch with him to start it in your own area, and to make sure that no mithai or paan is being made from cattle intestines in slaughterhouses, this is his address: Surendra Karnavat 9-A Takhteshahi Road, Jaipur-302004. Dimapur-Kohima 4-lane road: Can this be a reality?

he Guwahati-Shillong 4-lane road has given immense facelift to Meghalaya. Similarly, when the ongoing 4-lane road between Dimapur and Kohima is completed, the face of Nagaland will be changed. This is my cherished dream that one day I also may ride a 4-lane road in Nagaland, and Dimapur-Kohima road is now in the process to have that standard of road hopefully. If this road is successfully completed, it may become a catalyst for improvement of other State roads. Seeing the beginning of the formation cutting at few locations, I feel elated as though I am already riding a 4-lane road despite of the bumpy journey. Seeing people working on road, I used to feel that I am somewhere else and not in Nagaland and yet indeed it is in Nagaland. Seeing the alignments for formation cutting made above the road, it gives me hope that yes, Nagaland can also have development after a long wait. As the formation cutting has begun at few locations, the two major perspectives are the concern. The first is the quality workmanship. We all know that the contractors have agreed to execute the works as per the written specifications provided by the Union Road ministry. The contractors are therefore bound to follow the agreement from formation cutting to finishing touch. If the contractors are found compromising the quality work in respect

of any item, they are punishable under the terms of agreement as I know as layman. The road once completed should be very lasting unlike other roads constructed or repaired by Nagaland PWD or BRTF. The second is the timely completion of the project. We all know that the contractors are given time schedule within which they should hand over the road to the people to enjoy. So, now the questions are how to ensure quality workmanship and its completion on time. When Shillong is linked with 4-lane road, can’t Kohima be linked with the same category of road? There is no question that the project will be hampered for want of sufficient fund. The Union Road Transport Ministry has approved to give this road to Nagaland, and I am sure till it is completed the Ministry will neither leave it on halfway nor will there be dearth of fund. I am also confident that the Union Ministry will insist on timely completion to avoid cost escalation. Meanwhile, it is encouraging to note that the Western Angami Public Organisation(WAPO) and the Chakhro Public Organisation (CPO) under whose jurisdictions the road passes through have given their cooperation publicly to the contractors who are given the works by the Union ministry. In the context of Nagaland, the public support, particularly those of the land owners, is the basic requirement for development. It is

also a challenge to those Villages through whose lands the road passes, whether undue and unwarranted interferences from bad and anti-people elements be freely allowed to harass the workers at sites or hamper the progress of the work within their jurisdictions. As the WAPO and CPO have given their declaration to support the contractors, it is now the duty of everyone to extend cooperation for the success story. Nagaland desperately needs this road after 53 years of Statehood. The general public are anxious to have this 4-lane road in reality and not in news papers. Yet, the project has to be executed in Nagaland and not in Assam or Meghalaya. Therefore, this project can meet the same fate as the 4 nos. of 2-lane road under SARDP-NE faced. The future of the 4 roads is now in the ICU of the Supreme Court of India. The worry is that those who harmed the 2-lane roads in question are still around and in a position to highjack the project. The site at those few spots where formation cuttings are on tells the story as we see the presence of security personals guarding the work sites. I intentionally stopped and asked one such on duty, and the reply was ‘Ami khan aha pichete dikdar nadiya hoishe, koi’. Be it any project in Nagaland, it becomes like carcass in African zoo which attracts wolves, foxes, crocodiles and vultures. (I am compelled to use

unpolished vocabularies suiting the actions of those who were responsible for destroying developments.) These animals were largely responsible for stalling the progress of the 2-lane roads. The contractors of the 2-lane roads may not be perfect, and yet had the Govt. of Nagaland been determined much better achievement would have been made. Be it politicians or bureaucrats, barring few God fearing ones, the rest have become so immersed with greed that they do have so much gut to squeeze their share of commission out of the project that comes on their way. Beside, may not be all, but many cadres in NPGs are experts in extracting percentage from development funds taking that role to be the sole purpose for which they are enrolled as national workers. Therefore, the combination of these forces which are craving to make money illegally out of any project may prowl on the 4-lane which is much stronger than those forces in the periphery desiring to have the project through. A time will come when the contractors may not be given congenial atmosphere at work site unless those animals are satisfied. A time will come when the contractors fail to get cooperation from the nodal authorities less huge commissions are doled out of their payments. All these illegal extractive mechanisms can be inflicted on the contractors whereby the quality workmanship is compro-

mised or the work is placed under controversy and therefore delayed or abandoned. There is also another tendency whereby the innocent and magnanimous landowners or Villagers are incited to claim compensations unreasonably if the history is to be repeated here. To avoid embarrassment I will not reiterate mentioning the location, but some Naga officers, once upon a time, guided the landowners to convert the waste lands into costly orchard overnight ahead of inspection for the purpose of compensation. Some of those experts may still be around or the wisdom might have been passed down to their juniors who may like to make hay in the 4-lane sunshine. Should there be such spirit of competition amongst the landowners to take undue advantage on the project, the question will finally arise as to whether importance be given to road project or to pay compensation by the Union Ministry. This factor will too impede the progress of the work. The question is therefore whether the 4-lane DimapurKohima road will become a reality or will it be left abandon like the 4 nos. of 2-lane roads. Because of our greed, because of our casualness and irresponsibility, if we fail to complete this project successfully this time, it may never come in near future. The project deserves to have the attention of all the right thinking citizens. Z. Lohe

Reservation of single vacancy post for backward tribe

Sir,

In the recently published advertisement by NPSC, for filling out of vacancies in the Nagaland government, through Combined Technical Services Examination 2016, and Common Educational Services Examination 2016, some of the vacancies are exclusively reserved for certain backward tribes. Some of which are 1. Corrigendum/Notification No. NPSC/ADVT1/04 dt. 26.10.2016: i) 1(one) post of SDO (Class-I Gazetted) Item No. 3 (a) under Irrigation and Flood Control Department is reserved for B.T. Sangtam. ii) 1(one) post of Asstt. Mechanical Engineer (AME) (Class–I Gazetted) Item No. 6 under Works & Housing Department is reserved for B.T. Yimchunger. iii) 1 (one) post of Dy.SP (NPTO) (Class-I Gazetted) Item No.10 under Home Department is reserved for B.T. Sangtam. 2. Corrigendum No. NPSC/ADVT/EDS-2012 dt. 26.10.2016 1 (one) post of PGT- Economics at Item No-30 under School Education, Department is reserved for BT.Chang. Will the NPSC justify or explain under what circumstance or legal ruling these single vacancy positions are 100% reserved for a particular tribe? Shouldn’t reservation be only done in case of more than one vacancy in the same post? This is grave injustice to the eligible candidates from “forward” tribes and other backward tribes as well. tions. Mukherjee also advised the parents that they should not scold the children or accost them when they share some absurd questions or dream about a utopian situation with them. “We often scold or accost our children when they ask an absurd question or dream a utopia. But have not the most remarkable progress been made by minds that could think ahead, dream big and make what seemed impossible at one time fully realisable,”

he asked. Underlining tendencies of some parents to provided instant solutions to their kids, Mukherjee said children should be allowed to develop the habit of thinking on their own. “Spoon-feeding at every step should be avoided. Well intentioned grooming by elders sometimes restricts the creative impulse of the child. “Such minds will not add to the start-up revolution which requires unleashing the entrepreneurial potential of our youth. BHOPAL, NOV 7 (PTI): The Madhya Pradesh government today issued a notification appointing retired High Court judge S K Pandey to probe the daring jail break by eight SIMI activists and their alleged encounter killings. The alleged encounter is mired in controversy as doubts are being raised about its genuineness by opposition Congress and other parties amid surfacing of a video clip and audio tapes that reportedly raised a question over the police version of the incident. “The single-member commission has been mandated to complete the probe within three months and submit its report to the state government,” the notification stated. The Pandey panel has been directed to probe the “circumstances in which the SIMI members escaped from the prison and the officials responsible for it”. “ H ow a n d u n d e r what circumstances the encounter took place at Manikheda village under Gunga Police Station limits on the outskirts of Bhopal in which all eight prisoners were killed...Whether the action taken by the police is justified under prevailing circumstances,” the notification asked.

Gold drops Rs 300 on weak global cues

has surged this year after an asset quality review ordered by the Reserve Bank of India uncovered more than previously calculated. The central bank has set a March 2017 deadline for the sector to fully disclose and make provisions for those. ICICI’s provisions, which include charges for bad loans, jumped to Rs. 7,083 crore in the September quarter from Rs. 2,515 crore three months earlier and more than seven times higher than a year earlier. The bank said total provisions in the second quarter included extra provisions of Rs. 3,588 crore which it took to strengthen its balance sheet.

Mumbai, Nov 7 (Agencies): ICICI Bank Ltd, India’s biggest private sector lender by assets, reported a 2.4 per cent rise in second quarter net profit on Monday due to lower tax expenses while its provisions surged more than seven times. Standalone net profit rose to Rs. 3,102 crore ($465 million) for the three months to September 30 from Rs. 3,030 crore a year earlier, well above the Rs. 2,565 crore average of 26 analyst estimates, according to Thomson Reuters data. Bad loans as a percentage of outstanding loans rose to 6.82 per cent at the end of September from 5.87 per cent at the end of June. Indian banks were saddled with $138 billion of stressed loans as of the end of June. While state-owned lenders account for bulk, ICICI has the highest proportion among private sector banks. New Delhi, Nov 7 (PTI): After five sessions of gains, gold prices today fell by Rs 300 per ten grams to crack below the 31,000-level and silver by Rs 450 to Rs 43,600 per kg at the bullion market on easing demand from jewellers coupled with weak global cues. Sentiment took a hit after gold tumbled overseas amid positive developments on the US election front, strengthening the dollar and diminishing appeal of the precious metal as a safe-haven, bullion traders said. The FBI has given a clean chit to Hillary Clinton, saying she should not face criminal charges after a review of new emails, an 11th-hour respite for the Democratic presidential candidate that could be a game changer in the tight race for the White House. Globally, gold fell 1.29 per cent to USD 1,287.20 an ounce and silver by 1.17 per cent to USD 18.19 an ounce in Singapore. Besides, fall in demand from jewellers and retailers at prevailing levels at domestic spot market fuelled the downtrend in the precious metals prices.

New Delhi, Nov 7 (IANS): India and Britain on Monday signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) on intellectual property rights (IPR) and ease of doing business following delegation-level talks led by Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Theresa May here. “Advancing business through agreements. The two leaders witness exchange of MoUs in Intellectual Property and Ease of Doing Business,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted. The MoU on IPR envisages establishing a mechanism for furthering cooperation between the intellectual property offices of India and Britain in the field of intellectual property and related information technology services,

ing of best practices and technical assistance for effective implementation of the initiatives of GOI to improve its ranking in the ease of doing business. Important areas of cooperation include support to businesses and start-ups, tax administration, regulatory regimes, and competition economics. Earlier on Monday, Modi and May addressed the India-UK Tech Summit here. This is May’s first bilateral visit outside of Europe since she assumed the Prime Minister’s office in July this year. She took over the prime ministership after David Cameron resigned following the historic referendum in June in which Britain voted to exit from the European Union. Cameron rooted for Britain to stay in the EU.

publicans on the House Oversight Committee. The Republican nominee cried foul after learning about the law enforcement bureau’s decision. At a rally in the Detroit suburbs, Trump insisted it would have been impossible for the FBI to review as many as 650,000 emails in such a short time. “Right now she’s being protected by a rigged system. It’s a totally rigged system. I’ve been saying it for a long time,” he told supporters in Sterling Heights, Michigan. “Hillary Clinton is guilty, she knows it, the FBI knows it, the people know it and now it’s up to the American people to deliver

justice at the ballot box on 8 November.” Comey’s letter was the culmination of a fastpaced review of the newly discovered e-mails, law enforcement sources said on Sunday. “We went through this as fast as we could,” a senior law enforcement official told CNN. The e-mails, thousands found, were mostly duplicates of what had already been seen and personal e-mails, law enforcement officials said in explaining how the conclusion was reached so quickly. The laptop which was found was around a decade old, with lots of personal content on it not relevant to the

investigation, according to one source. It’s impossible to know before results are tallied what impact Comey’s actions -- first raising a vaguely worded red flag, and then lowering it two days from the election -- will have on the contest. But the news could help Clinton put to rest a controversy that has dogged her in the 2016 race’s closing days, helping her rival Donald Trump narrow a polling gap nationally and in key battleground states. While Clinton herself did not address the FBI director’s letter on the trail, her campaign said it was always confident she would be cleared. on Sunday, she said the country was facing “a moment of reckoning” and Americans must choose between “division and unity”. In July, the FBI said she had been “extremely careless” to handle classified material on a private email server as secretary of state from 2009-13, but it had found no evidence she committed a crime.

Dhaka ‘hero’ to get Mother Teresa Award China bars elected Hong Kong lawmakers

Mumbai, Nov 7 (IANS): The Harmony Foundation on Monday named the braveheart of the Dhaka terror attack, Faraaz Ayaaz Hossain, for this year’s Mother Teresa Memorial International Award for Social Justice, an official said here. The award will be conferred posthumously upon Hossain, who was gunned down during the terror strike at a restaurant in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on July 1-2. Some 29 persons were killed in that attack, said Harmony Foundation President Abraham Mathai. “On July 1, Hossain courageously stood up against the terrorists, refused to let his Hindu friends bear the brunt of the terrorists’ ire by standing up for them, earning him the title of a ‘hero’,” Mathai told IANS. Hossain’s devastated parents will arrive in Mumbai to receive the award on

BEIJING, NOV 7 (Agencies): At least nine people were killed and 43 others injured on Sunday in multiple pile-up accidents along an expressway in Shanghai as heavy smog engulfed several cities in China. Several road accidents were reported along the S32 expressway in Pudong New Area due to foggy weather. In one accident, two people were killed when a tanker hit four people who had got off a minibus. Another accident occurred three kms away on the expressway when a van was hit by two heavy vehicles, killing five people, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Two more accident victims died in a hospital. So far 43 people have been admitted in hospitals in Pudong, Zhoupu and Shuguang cities.

Democracy (FAD) called the elections a “farce”. The FAD, which had urged voters to boycott the election, alleged that more than 70% had abstained from voting. They were contradicted by the electoral authorities which put voter participation at 65.8%. International observers were not allowed to monitor the vote. Washington, Nov 7 (IANS): FBI Director James Comey told lawmakers the agency has not changed its opinion that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton should not face criminal charges over her use of a personal e-mail server during her stay in the State Department, after a review of new e-mails. The statement prompted rival Donald Trump, Republican candidate, to accuse the agency of impropriety. Comey had dropped a bombshell ahead of the November 8 election when he informed Congress that the FBI had discovered e-mails in its separate investigation of Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of top Clinton aide Huma Abedin, that could be connected to its investigation of whether Clinton mishandled classified information by using a private e-mail server, CNN reported. “Based on our review, we have not changed our conclusions that we expressed in July,” Comey said in a letter to top Re-

sion-making with Mr Ortega and could become president if her 70-year-old husband were to bow out. The vote was seen as the most one-sided election in Nicaragua since the overthrow of dictator Anastasio Somoza in 1979 - a process that Mr Ortega himself was involved in. But Nicaragua is sharply divided over the 70-yearold former guerrilla. Many feel that the elections were a farce, that with this, his third consecutive term, there is growing autocracy in the country and the role of his wife as runningmate is too much of a family affair. The fact remains, though, that he was the most popular candidate by far. Overseeing Nicaragua’s stable economic growth and the lack of violence compared to the problems of its neighbours El Salvador and Honduras in recent years have cemented him as the best option for many Nicaraguans.

With two-thirds of the votes counted, the left-wing leader had secured an irreversible lead with 72%, election officials said. His closest rival, centreright candidate Maximino Rodriguez, only had 14.2% of the vote. Ortega had been widely expected to win both due to the popularity of his social programmes and because he faced no obvious political challenger. A former left-wing rebel, Ortega has led Nicaragua through a period of economic stability which has made him popular with Nicaragua’s business sector and foreign investors. Messi inspires Barca comeback

Barcelona’s Messi challenges Sevilla’s Sarabia for the ball during their La Liga soccer match at the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium, in Seville, Spain on Sunday. (AP/PTI)

S e v i l l e , N ov 7 (Agencies): Barcelona moved to within two points of La Liga leaders Real Madrid after coming from behind to beat Sevilla 2-1 in a pulsating contest on Sunday night. Lionel Messi scored Barcelona’s first and created the second for Luis Suarez after Vitolo handed Sevilla a deserved lead. Suarez’s winner ensured Barcelona became the first side this season to beat Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium. The result leaves Sevilla in fifth, while Barcelona head into the international

break in second behind Real, who won 3-0 earlier in the day thanks to a Gareth Bale brace. A vociferous home crowd were spurred on by Sevilla’s blistering start, with Luciano Vietto forcing a smart save from MarcAndre ter Stegen early on. And while Luis Suarez went close with an effort moments later, all the early pressure came from Sevilla, and they were rewarded for their efforts after 15 minutes. Pablo Sarabia played the ball beyond Sergi Roberto for Vitolo to run on to, and the striker carried

the ball into the box before stabbing it past Ter Stegen. The hosts were happy to sit back and pose questions to Barcelona after taking the lead, with the visitors struggling to create any clear-cut chances. Vitolo could have had his second later in the first half, but the Spaniard shot wide after Sevilla capitalised on a mistake when Barcelona attempted to play out from the back. Moments after Vitolo’s chance, Barcelona made Sevilla pay - a typically flowing counter-attack saw Neymar shimmy past a couple of defenders

SA beat Australia by 177 runs in Perth

South Africa have now won three successive Test matches at the WACA in Perth.

Perth, Nov 7 (Agencies): Australia slipped to a fourth successive Test defeat as South Africa won the opening Test of their three-match series by 177 runs in Perth. Set a notional 539, the hosts were bowled out for 361 shortly before tea on the final day thanks to 21-year-old pace bowler Kagiso Rabada’s 5-92. U s m a n K h aw a j a made 97 and Peter Nevill an unbeaten 60 for Australia, who lost 3-0 in Sri Lanka in August.

Victory was South Africa’s third in a row at the Waca, after 2008 and 2012. It was completed without Dale Steyn, the world’s number tworanked bowler who was ruled out of the series on Friday with a fractured shoulder. Australia, 169-4 overnight, survived for 119 overs in total in the fourth innings on a pitch featuring large cracks. However, their firstinnings collapse proved costly, slipping from 158-1 to 244 all out in response

to South Africa’s 242. JP Duminy made 141 and Dean Elgar 127, putting on 250 for the third wicket in South Africa’s second-innings 540-8 declared. The second Test in Hobart starts on Saturday and the final Test in Adelaide on 24 November. Australia batsman Joe Burns will replace Shaun Marsh, who suffered a broken finger in Perth, for the second Test, while the uncapped Callum Ferguson has been added to the squad.

Michael Clarke, Mitchell Johnson slam DRS

Perth, Nov 7 (IANS): Close on the heels of Mitchell Marshs controversial leg before dismissal during the opening cricket Test of the three-match series against South Africa at the Western Australia Cricket Association (WACA) ground here, former Aussie skipper Michael Clarke and pacer Mitchell Johnson termed the Decision Review System (DRS) as a “failure. Marsh, on the fifth and final day of the match, was originally given not out after he was struck low on the pads of a Kagiso Rabada delivery. However, the decision was over-turned when the ball-tracking technology showed it to be hitting more than 50 percent of Marsh’s leg stump and he was sent back to the pavilion. Following his dismissal, the DRS came under fire, with Johnson, former Australian captains Clarke and Mark Taylor all criticising the ball-tracking technology. “I was certain that was missing the K Y M C

stumps. When you look at that replay, I thought it was definitely swinging too far and missing the leg stump. He’ll be really disappointed with that. It has clipped his toe, then clipped his pad, and then got onto the bat, Clarke said while commentating on Channel 9. Both he and Taylor questioned the accuracy of the technology’s ball path, Cricket Australia (CA) website reported. “He was given not out so the technology has to prove that he was definitely out to overturn the decision. It almost looks like the ball seamed back a little bit and just done enough for 50 percent to hit the outside of the stump, meaning the not out call was overturned, Taylor said. “I reckon the ball is going to flick the stumps at best. But to be overturned, Mitchell Marsh is very unlucky. Echoing similar views, Marsh’s batting partner Usman Khawaja questioned the on-field umpires.

before laying off to Messi, who calmly placed the ball beyond Sergio Rico from the edge of the area. Questions were asked as to whether Ivan Rakitic was blocking Rico’s view from an offside position when Messi took his shot, but the goal stood and Barcelona headed into the break all-square. It was Barcelona who shone in the second half, and a breathless 15-minute period saw Rakitic and Messi both go close. Just after the hourmark, Barcelona’s persistence paid off, with Messi bursting forward before picking out Suarez in the area, who finished coolly beyond the advancing Rico. Suarez could have put the game beyond Sevilla on a couple of occasions, but Rico was on hand to prevent Barcelona from moving further ahead. As the clock ticked towards 90, the yellow cards began to rack up for both sides - most notably for Messi, who was cautioned for time-wasting after losing his boot following Steven N’Zonzi’s tackle. The hosts failed to create a telling chance and Barcelona held on to claim all three points and end Sevilla’s 100 per cent record at home in the league this season.

Federer falls out of top 10 in rankings London, Nov 7 (Agencies): Roger Federer has fallen outside the world’s top 10 for the first time since 2002 but he could still win another grand slam title, according to former great Stefan Edberg. While Andy Murray’s rise to world number one was the main talking point of Monday’s new ATP rankings, 17-times major champion Federer’s slide to 16th was largely overlooked. The Swiss ended his season in July in a bid to recover fully from knee surgery, although he is aiming to be fit for the Australian Open in January. At 35, however, logic suggests Federer’s days of challenging for silverware may be numbered. His last grand slam title came at Wimbledon in 2012. But former world number one Edberg, who has coached Federer, disagrees. “I thought in the past years he would have won one, he was so close, sixtimes major champion Edberg told Tennis World.

Mohun Bagan were dealt a blow following the injury to defender Dhanachandra Singh who was playing for Chennaiyin FC in the ISL. Dhanachandra played for Mohun Bagan in the last I-League. The left-back has been ruled out for the season and remains doubtful for the ILeague starting January 7 next year. In order to shore up the rear guard, Mohun Bagan coach Sanjoy Sen is said to be looking at Rocha, 34, known simply as Ruben who started his footballing career in Spanish heavyweight Real Madrid’s youth academy. After a handful of appearances with Real’s senior team and loan spells with Borussia Monchengladbach in Germany as well as with Albacete in Spain, Ruben made a switch to Racing Santander in 2006.

Proud after reaching world No 1: Murray Paris, Nov 7 (Agencies): Andy Murray has revealed that he felt the world No 1 ranking was not within his grasp up until the last couple of years. Reaching the final of the Paris Masters - after Milos Raonic’s withdrawal from their semi-final - coupled with Novak Djokovic’s quarter-final exit to Marin Cilic, means 29year-old Murray will take over from the Serb at the top of the world rankings on Monday. And Murray, who first reached the No 2 spot in 2009 and has held the position for 76 weeks in total during his career, admits that it became a goal that edged closer the further up the game he got. “I’m very proud to have done it, he told Sky Sports. “It wasn’t something I dreamt of a kid. is by far the hardest one to reach and it’s been a long time. I thought about it a bit this year and last year, but before that it wasn’t something I felt that close to. It’s only been the last few months that I got close, as Novak was 7,000-8,000pts ahead of me after the French Open, so it’s been a great few months. The Scot becomes the the oldest first-time No 1 since John Newcombe in 1974 and had often spoken ranking as a goal for next

season. Murray has also been adamant that it would be reward for a sustained period of success and effort, and he reserved praise for his coaching team. “It’s a lot of hard work, he added. “Many, many years I have been on the tour and not got there and I’ve always been behind Novak, Roger [Federer] and Rafa [Nadal], who are three of the best players of all time, without question.

Zlatan, Pogba score as Man Utd win

Ibrahimovic, who had failed to score in any of his last six games, drives the ball into the net from outside the area.

L o nd o n , N o v 7 (Agencies): A brace from superstar striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic inspired Manchester United to a comfortable 3-1 victory over Swansea at Liberty Stadium. Paul Pogba put United ahead with a fine solo effort before Ibrahimovic added two more before half-time to end the game as a contest. S wa n s e a g o t o n e back in the second period through Mike van der Hoorn but it was far too little too late for the Swans. Jose Mourinho’s Unit-

ed climb to sixth in the table following the win. Swansea remain rooted in the bottom three in 19th with Bob Bradley still looking for his first win in charge. Wayne Rooney almost had one on the scoresheet just three minutes into the tie, fooling the defence on the edge of the area before looping an effort from 20 yards at goal and putting it just wide. United didn’t have to wait much longer to break the Swans rearguard. The ball fell to Pogba at the edge of the area and the France international fired a sensational strike into the

top corner. With Swansea all at sea it should have been two when a ball found Marouane Fellaini unmarked in box and the Belgian poked his effort just wide. And it was two moments later as Ibrahimovic got his first of the day. Rooney played the big man onto the ball 22 yards out before he unleashed a superb shot to the back of the net for his first strike in 43 shots on goal and the 25,000 goal in Premier League history. Rooney should have added another soon after as he was given far too much space in the box but his ef-

AIFF may decide on ISL, I-League merger early next year New Delhi, Nov 7 (IANS): The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is looking at a February-March 2017 timeframe in finalising a roadmap for the proposed Indian Super League (ISL), I-League merger, involving 10 or 11 teams, but insisted on Monday on a patient, comprehensive approach rather than a swift and messy unification of the two domestic tournaments. The planned composite league with all the eight Indian Super League (ISL) and select I-League teams has been in the pipeline for sometime with the AIFF also formulating a rough sketch of the merger with ISL becoming the top-flight tournament and the I-League, to be renamed League One, becoming the second tier event, which has met with

ample criticism and confusion. Former champions Salgaocar have already declared to skip the impending I-League, to start in January next year. Fellow Goan clubs are also reportedly mulling the same route but are yet to make public their intentions. The AIFF originally pushed for a 2017-18 unveiling of the new-look league. The governing body is looking to stick to its original deadline. But for that to happen all contentious aspects have to fall in place by FebruaryMarch next year. “If we don’t arrive at a amicable plan for the stakeholders, then the plan will be moved back for the 201819 season,” AIFF general secretary Kushal Das said, on the sidelines of a book launch named Back To The Roots, written by global

football body FIFA’s regional development officer Shaji Prabhakaran, here on Monday. The new league will ideally comprise 10 teams the eight ISL franchises and two I-League clubs, reigning champions Bengaluru FC and runners-up Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan reportedly better placed at making the cut. But the AIFF is also open to a 11-team format with another Kolkata heavyweights East Bengal also in the fray. “The number of teams to participate in the league is yet to be decided,” Das added. Accommodating the contrasting demands and ideology and legacy of traditional I-League clubs and the corporate franchises of the ISL have come in the way of the AIFF’s ambitious plan.

fort went across the face of goal and wide. Wi t h o n e o n t h e scoresheet Zlatan was hungry and smashed in a second minutes later. Rooney dinked a ball into the box for the target man to ease past Angel Rangel and finish home as Swansea crumbled to pieces. Fellaini had another chance to further extend United’s lead when Zlatan chipped through for the Belgian in the box but Fellaini’s effort was blocked away by Alfie Mawson. With 20 minutes to go Swansea gave themselves a lifeline. Gylfi Sigurdsson played a cross into the box and Van der Hoorn rose highest to head past David de Gea. United went on the offensive to re-establish their three-goal cushion with Rooney bursting into the area and pulling back for Juan Mata to have a strike on goal, curling wide of the far post. Swansea could and should have reduced the deficit to one when Jefferson Montero broke down the left to cross deep for Modou Barrow; however, the best Barrow could do was scuff his effort from ten yards leaving De Gea plenty of time to get down and snuff out the danger.
