NEW DELHI, SEP 30 (IANS): With COVID-19 set to enter its ninth month in India after the country reported its first confirmed case on January 30, there is a likelihood of increased transmission of the novel coronavirus during the winter months, health experts warned Wednesday. The coronavirus that has traversed winter, spring, summer, monsoon and now creating havoc in autumn has proven to be an allseason virus. “Based on our knowledge of other respiratory viruses, it may be possible that the coronavirus infections might rise in the coming winter months,” Dr Richa Sareen, Consultant, Pulmonology at Fortis Hospital told IANS. “Most respiratory illnesses like SARS, influenza, etc show a seasonal variation, with cases spiking in winter months. Viruses tend to survive longer in a cold and dry climate,” she explained. She said lack of sunshine in winters also depletes Vitamin D levels, thereby decreasing immunity, making people more susceptible to infections.
definite economic” bandh on Dimapur took effect September 28, a joint meeting convened by Dimapur Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) in Dimapur on Wednesday has called for lifting the bandh. On the other hand the Public Action Committee of Dimapur along with Kohima District Truck Owners and Drivers Union-- have expressed full support to the demands of the truckers association. It may be mentioned that five truckers’ associations including Dimapur District Truck Owners’ Association, Dimapur Truck Drivers’ Union, Dimapur District Truck Drivers’ Welfare Trade Union, Lahorijan & Khatkhati Truckers’ Welfare Society and Bokajan Truck Owners’ Association began their “indefinite economic blockade” from Tuesday morning. In a press release, DCCI president Akashe K Zhimomi said that the joint meeting held on Wednesday was attended by Dimapur Goods Transport Association, Dimapur District Truck Owners’ Union, Dimapur District Truck Drivers’ Welfare Trade Union and Dimapur District Truck Drivers’ Union. DCCI informed that the joint meeting “took serious note” of the agitation that has affected supply of essential goods and live-saving drugs into Nagaland amid Covid-19 pandemic. DCCI said the joint meeting noted that the “chakka jam” was creating fear psychosis among general public and resolved that various transporters and truck unions of Dimapur should immediately resume operation to normalise the transportation (Cont’d on p-8) and supply chain.
Committee (PAC), Dimapur has expressed its solidarity with truck owners’ and drivers’ unions for their economic blockade that began on Tuesday. Extending its support to the transporters’ grievances, the committee in a statement demanded that these should be addressed without delay to avoid causing hardships to citizens. It also appealed to peaceloving citizens and organisations to support the transporters who have not only lost money, but also a driver on September 22. Asserting that “mafiadom had no place in a democratic State”, PAC vehemently condemned the killing of the truck driver and demanded that the assailants be apprehended and given punishment. PAC said it could feel the pulse of truckers who were always at the receiving end as it had always stood against multiple illegal collection of money at various locations. PAC said it had conducted market surveys in Dimapur long time back and found that goods-laden vehicles entering the town were levied multiple illegal taxes by various quarters, which was one of the main factors for price escalation. PAC reminded that during its “Operation Check Gate”, it had collected hard evidence to prove that a single item was taxed (Cont’d on p-8) multiple times.
LUCKNOW, SEP 30 (PTI): Twenty-eight years after the Babri Masjid was razed, a court here acquitted all 32 people – including BJP veterans LK Advani, MM Joshi, Uma Bharti and Bajrang Dal founder Vinay Katiyar– accused of being involved in the demolition of the mosque they believed occupied the spot where Lord Ram was born. In a judgment that ran to 2,300 pages with enclosures, the special CBI court on Wednesday said there was no conclusive evidence against the 32 accused of being involved in any conspiracy to bring down the disputed structure in Ayodhya.
Delivering the verdict on the day of his retirement, special Judge SK Yadav did not accept newspaper reports and video cassettes as evidence. The court also observed that the late VHP leader Ashok Singhal wanted to save the structure because Ram idols were inside. The 16th century mosque was demolished on December 6, 1992, triggering riots that left hundreds dead in the country and widening rifts between the communities. 26 of the accused were present in the Lucknow court when the judge read out the operative portion of the verdict. DIMAPUR, SEP 30 (NPN): Assam Sand Suppliers and Truck Owners Association Dimapur (ASSTOAD) Wednesday announced imposition of “total ban” on sand supply with effect from September 30 evening. Announcing the ban at a press conference held at Saramati hotel, here Wednesday, ASSTOAD president, Anito Shohe, said that the decision to impose ban was based on the issue of price hike of sand supply and illegal transportation of sand within the state. Shohe said that the ban would continue till the matter was resolved amicably. The association has approached the district administration, police and forest department to extend cooperation, he said. ASSTOAD finance secretary Deon Swu informed that the association’s “main concept” was to have a joint meeting with the mahaldars association in Assam so as to take into account the concerns of both suppliers and buyers in the state. He said that the association spearheading the negotiations for the price hike of sand would have a joint meeting with the main parties in Assam until then the association would impose ban on the sand supply.

The Ram temple trust president was also tested positive last month. The judge took his seat at 12.10 pm and spent five minutes reading out the operative part of his judgment. As he pronounced them not guilty, some of the accused
chanted “Jai Shri Ram” in the court. As did Advani, a key figure in the Ram temple movement, at his home. “It is a very important decision and a matter of happiness for us. When we heard the news of the court’s order, we welcomed it by chanting Jai Shri Ram,” he said in a video message. The verdict comes less than a year after the Supreme Court’s historic judgment in the related Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute that paved the way for the construction of a temple at the Ayodhya site. The apex court verdict had called the demolition an “egregious violation of the rule of law.” But combined with the ‘bhoomi pujan’ for the Ram temple only last month, the verdict in the demolition case has come as boost to the BJP. It also helps bring the temple issue centre stage just weeks before the party faces assembly polls in Bihar. DIMAPUR, SEP 30 (NPN): ACAUT has termed as unfortunate the State government’s bid to remove the Lokayukta, who it said was seen as someone determined to cleanse the rot in the system. Reminding the government that unhindered corruption cannot continue and that it must reconcile to this new reality, ACAUT pointed out that even governor RN Ravi in a recent letter alluded to CAG reports on siphoning of funds with impunity across various departments while raising the issue of law and order. Admitting some of this could be attributed to demands by various NPGs as stated in the High Powered Commission report, ACAUT alleged that misuse of substantial amount of development funds could be attributed solely to rampant corruption. It also felt that the writ petition filed by the state government in Supreme Court was devoid of sound
judgement and asked how an Upalokayukta could hold and exercise powers and functions of Lokayukta when the former did not possess the required qualification and criteria as per the Lokayukta Act. It hoped that the popularly elected government would make tangible allegations against the accused, if any, based on justifiable and objective allegations, rather than personal habits and eccentricities. Po i n t i n g o u t t h a t ACAUT was successful in getting the Lokayukta Bill passed after a long-drawn battle, it however regretted that the statutory body had been rendered toothless in the face of issues raised by the governor. In order to ensure that people’s trust in the institution did not meet an untimely death, ACAUT urged the State government to appoint a full-fledged registrar for Lokayukta. Also calling for strengthening Lokayukta police,
Kohima District Truck Owners and Drivers’ Union (KDTODU) has extended “full support” to the ongoing indefinite economic bandh called by five truck associations. KDTODU president Rüvese Sokha and secretary Küvethi Puro condemned the “dastardly killing” of a truck driver Jiten Gogoi.

Despite a steep rise in the (Cont’d on p-8) number of Covid-19 cases in the country, the home ministry has made it clear that there would be more relaxations and fewer restrictions, though local administrations in some states are heavily relying on voluntary curfew, local lockdowns etc. For re-opening of schools and coaching institutions, state governments have been given the flexibility to take a decision after October 15, in a graded manner. especially investigation wing, ACAUT said that Lokayukta or directorate of Vigilance and Anti-corruption in most States were headed by officer equivalent to the rank of ADG or a senior IPS officer who has been in service for least 25 years. Assuming that the CAG objections needed to be probed, ACAUT pointed out that the current staff strength was minuscule and Lokayukta Police required offices in other districts, with each establishment being headed by a DIG/SSP with a commensurate staff for investigation and support. Mentioning that the Lokayukta did not have framed rules, ACAUT demanded that this be done by the government on a priority basis after due consultations with the Lokayukta and civil society organisations. It also said that eligible candidates with impeccable integrity without any political leaning be selected to various vacant posts without further delay.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2020
HC issues notices to Centre, Police paper leak: Assam CM contradicts party Gauhati Assam, OIL for drilling inside forest
Guwahati, Sep 30 (PTI): Assam's BJP Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday termed the question paper leak in state police recruitment examination as a "scam", which is in contrast to the party's stand of calling it an "anomaly". Question papers of several exams under various governments have been leaked in the state since 1952 but this is the first time that the administration has acted so expeditiously and transparently to institute an inquiry, Sonowal said. His statement came hours after the state Congress alleged that the Chief Ministers Office and BJP leaders were involved in the scandal and Sonowal should resign. Four more persons were arrested in connection with the scam, taking the total nabbed to 24. The police have also announced a reward of Rs one lakh for any information leading to the arrest of each of the two key accused - ex-DIG P K Dutta and BJP leader Diban Deka. "Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that state government has instituted an inquiry into the
Sarbananda Sonowal
sub-inspector (unarmed branch) recruitment scam as the investigating agency has been asked to conduct the inquiry impartially without any compromise," a release from the Chief Minister's Office said. At an official function here, he also said that the police would definitely track all the persons accused in the "scam" and arrest them. Addressing a press conference on September 27, state BJP Chief Spokesperson Rupam Goswami had said, "The paper leak of the police examination is not a scam, but an anomaly
only." Goswami's statement evoked sharp reactions from different quarters. Political parties and activists alleged that the BJP-led government in the state is trying to hush up the episode, which has taken place about six months before the Assembly polls. Sonowal also said that once the findings of the investigation are out, all aspects of the scam will come to the fore. "He also maintained that the inquiry ordered into the scam was not the result of any complaint. Within 15 minutes of the
reported leak of question papers, the state government has cancelled the examination, the CMO release said. The question paper of the written examination for 597 posts of unarmed subinspectors in Assam Police got leaked on September 20, and the test was cancelled minutes after it had commenced across the state. "In sync with the state government's principle of 'zero-tolerance' against corruption, Chief Minister Sonowal said that no leniency or compromise would be tolerated in the inquiry process, the release said. Meanwhile, the Nalbari district police arrested three more persons and the Guwahati Police's Crime Branch nabbed one accused, senior officials of the respective forces told PTI. The Congress' Assam unit alleged that Chief Minister's Office was involved in the police recruitment question paper leak scam and demanded resignation of Sonowal. Rajya Sabha MP and state Congress president Ripun Bora claimed that the name of a lady stenographer of an OSD in the
CM's office is coming up in the scandal, but she has not been interrogated as of now. The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) also recently alleged that the entire scandal is a result of a "nexus between the CM, BJP and the RSS", and so a probe by the CBI or a sitting high court judge, instead of the ongoing police investigation, is necessary to unearth the truth. Diban Deka, a key accused who identified himself as the National Executive Member of the BJP's Kisan Morcha in Facebook said in a post on September 24 that he was involved with the examination process and now he has "left Assam" as he might be "killed anytime" because "many big and corrupt officials" of Assam Police are involved in the scam. Eight days before the recruitment examination, the State Level Police Recruitment Board that conducts the test had also issued a notice cautioning candidates against touts after an audio clip that promised job in sub-inspector posts against a payment of Rs 4 lakh in cash went viral.
Guwahati, Sep 30 (PTI): Gauhati High Court on Wednesday issued notices to the Centre, Assam government, Oil India and different agencies in a case related to granting permission to the PSU to drill seven wells inside DibruSaikhowa National Park, which is adjacent to Baghjan well tragedy site. Hearing the PIL filed jointly by advocate Mrinmoy Khataniar and mountaineer Amar Jyoti Deka, a HC bench comprising Chief Justice (Acting) N Kotiswar Singh and Justice Manish Choudhury directed the 14 respondents to file their affidavits within two weeks and fixed October 20 as the next date. The bench considered another PIL filed by another advocate Gautam Uzir along with it as both were filed on the same issue. “On the earlier date, the Court had asked the opposing parties to reply to the PIL. However, no one replied except Oil India. So, the Court today issued notices to all the respondents and gave two weeks’ time,” the petitioners’ advocate Rakhee Sirauthia Chowdhury said. She said although OIL
has replied to the Court’s earlier direction, the notice was issued to them on an additional affidavit filed by the petitioners. The petitioners made 14 respondents in the case -- Government of India (GoI), Secretary to GoI, Assam government, Principal Secretary, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Head of Forest Force and Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife). The National Board of Wildlife, State Board of Wildlife, Oil India Ltd (OIL), General Manager, The Deputy Commissioner, Commissioner and Secretary, Central Pollution Control Board and State Pollution Control Board were also made parties in the case. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC)
had accorded environmental clearance to Oil India Ltd (OIL) for drilling and testing of hydrocarbons at seven locations under Dibru-Saikhowa National Park, north west of Baghjan in Tinsukia district. Fire is raging at OIL’s Baghjan well site since June 9 following a gas blowout from well number five since May 27. Two firefighters were killed in the blaze. `The Assam government had said earlier this monththat two more months are likely to be taken by the experts to douse the flame. The PIL was filed against the Centre’s approval to OIL for drilling inside the forest, which is very rich in biodiversity, by amending existing norms like public hearing under the draft Environment Impact Assessment Notification 2020.

UP Police bury rape victim in dead of the night
HATHRAS/NEW DELHI, SEP 30 (PTI): The body of the 19-year-old Dalit woman, whose brutal gangrape and death spotlighted once again the vulnerability of women in India, was cremated in the dead of the night on Wednesday with family members alleging they were forced by police to hurriedly conduct the last rites. “The cremation was done around 2.30-3 in the morning,” her father told PTI, a day after his daughter, who suffered critical injuries when she was allegedly gangraped and tortured by four upper caste men a fortnight ago, gave up the battle for life. As protests broke out in several parts of the country and political leaders and activists voiced their protest over the manner in which the funeral was conducted near the woman’s home in a village in Hathras, a local police officer said it was carried out “as per the wishes of the family”. In the moments preceding the cremation of his sister in what seemed to be a night without end, the teen’s brother told PTI from his home, “Police have forcibly taken the body and my father along with them for

cremation. When my father reached Hathras (from New Delhi), he was immediately taken (to the crematorium) by the police.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and said strict action should be taken against the culprits, according to the Chief Minister’s Office. The chief minister constituted a three-member SIT to probe the case and asked that the trial be conducted in a fast track court. The SIT
has been asked to submit its report in seven days, an official said. Adityanath also spoke to the father and assured him strict action against the accused. Recalling the horrors of the Nirbhaya case, the Dalit teen was allegedly sexually assaulted by the men on September 14 and referred on Monday to the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi with spinal injuries, paralysis and cuts in her tongue. She died around 3 am on Tuesday. The men alleged to be
involved in the crime are under arrest and will now face charges under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code, according to Hathras Superintendent of Police Vikrant Vir. The family left Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi on Tuesday night amid heavy police deployment and reached their village in Hathras, about 180 km from the national capital, after the body of the young woman, claimed a family member. Family members said the body of the woman, the
youngest of five siblings, arrived in an ambulance after midnight in the village. The vehicle was parked on a road near the house and not taken to the family’s home but straight to the crematorium, they alleged. Another relative said 30 to 40 people accompanied the woman’s father, who sells milk for a living, to the crematorium. Senior police and administration officials were present at the crematorium, an official said. Purported visuals from the site showed flames from what appeared to be a pyre lighting up the sky and heavy police presence with some personnel in anti-riot gear keeping the media at bay. Anguished cries from family members broke the silence of the night. “I wanted my daughter to come home first… At least we could have applied ‘haldi’ on her body. This was her last goodbye. She won’t come back now,” her mother said in a video, sobbing uncontrollably. However, Hathras Joint Magistrate Prem Prakash Meena said the final rites were carried out according to procedures and with permission and support of the family in order to maintain
law and order. “The situation in the village and in Hathras was normal,” he said. The young woman’s sexual assault two weeks ago, her death yesterday and the details of her middle-ofthe-night cremation led to nationwide outrage, protests and calls for justice from all sections of society. While scores of Left and Congress leaders were detained when they staged protests against the Yogi Adityanath government near the UP Bhawan in Delhi, opposition leaders questioned the circumstances and the timing of the cremation. Tagging Adityanath in a tweet, she added, “RESIGN. Instead of protecting the victim and her family, your government became complicit in depriving her of every single human right, even in death. You have no moral right to continue as chief minister.” Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati said her party strongly condemns the “wrong attitude” of the police. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav alleged that the cremation was done in the middle of the night to erase evidence.
5 India test fires BrahMos supersonic cruise missile NEW DELHI/BALASORE, SEP 30 (PTI): India on Wednesday successfully test fired a new version of the surface-to-surface supersonic cruise missile BrahMos having a range of around 400 km from an integrated test range at Balasore in Odisha, officials said. The missile, featuring a number of indigenously developed sub-systems, was flight tested from a land based mobile launcher for a designated range at 10:30 am from the integrated test range in Balasore. The range of the new land attack version of the missile has been extended to 400 km from the original 290 km, the officials said, adding its speed has been maintained at Mach 2.8 which is nearly three times that of sound. India has already deployed a sizeable number of the original BrahMos missiles and other key assets in several strategic locations along the de-facto border with China in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh. The test firing of the missile comes at a time India and China are locked in a bitter border standoff in eastern Ladakh. “BrahMos surface-to-
surface supersonic cruise missile featuring indigenous booster and airframe section along with many other ‘Made in India’ sub-systems was successfully flight tested for designated range at 1030 hours today,” the defence ministry said. In a statement, it also said the successful launch has paved the way for the serial production of the indigenous booster and other indigenous components of the powerful BrahMos weapons system. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated all the team members of Defence Research and Development Organisation and BrahMos for the mission. “Congratulations to Team @DRDO_India and @BrahMosMissile for the successful flight testing of #BRAHMOS Supersonic Cruise Missile with Indigenous Booster and Air Frame for designated range. This achievement will give a big boost to India’s #AtmaNirbharBharat Pledge,” he tweeted. BrahMos Aerospace, an India-Russian joint venture, produces the supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or from land platforms.
Will not allow any damage to Shocking, say Muslim leaders on Babri demolition case verdict eco-sensitive zone via mining: SC
NEW DELHI, SEP 30 (IANS): Chief Justice of India S.A. Bobde on Wednesday said the Supreme Court will not allow any damage to the eco-sensitive zone and if an area falls in an eco-sensitive zone, then neither the Centre nor state will have the right to mine it. A bench, headed by the Chief Justice and comprising Justices A.S. Bopanna and V. Ramasubramanian, said as far as exploitation of natural resources is concerned, the court cannot rely on either the Centre or the state government. “When it comes to nature, there is always an attempt to make money out of it. If the eco-sensitive zone is hampered, we will not allow it,” said CJI Bobde as the bench heard a suit filed by the Jharkhand government challenging the Centre’s
decision to auction coal blocks in the state for commercial mining. The bench noted that prima facie, the Centre is entitled to auction coal blocks in the state, as it is not a scheduled area, and asked the Centre to file an affidavit within a week clarifying whether in the area under question is ecosensitive or not. The CJI noted that Jharkhand is claiming immunity from the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act. “Politics and law are connected, no doubt about it, but we don’t consider it a part of law,” he said. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing the state government, submitted that 53 per cent of Jharkhand is forest areas and the state is challenging the auction, which, he insisted, is “contrary to
public interest”. As the CJI asked if he was saying that mining lease cannot be granted in an ecosensitive zone, Singhvi said it can be done in a small area far away from such a zone. The CJI then sought evidence be placed on record that the area under coal blocks is an eco-sensitive zone. Senior advocate Fali Nariman, also appearing for the state government, said the government has put forth full details on the areas in eco-sensitive zones. Attorney General K.K. Venugopal, representing the Centre, said that 2 weeks before the filing of the suit, the state filed a writ petition asking the Centre to hold back the coal block auction until global investment climate improves, which would help the state to maximise returns on natural resources.
N E W D E L H I / LU C KNOW, SEP 30 (IANS): After the verdict in the Babri Masjid demolition case was pronounced acquitting all the 32 accused, Muslim organizations and political leaders called it injustice and shocking. Congress leader Ahmed Patel said, “The Babri verdict is shocking, it goes contrary to principles of natural justice and even the SC’s observation.” The AIMIM said it is a sad day for the Indian judiciary. “Today is a sad day in the history of Indian judiciary. Now, the court says there was no conspiracy. Please enlighten me, how many days or months of preparations are required to disqualify an action from being spontaneous?” asked AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi. President of the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind Maulana Syed Arshad Madani

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) too demanded that the CBI should appeal against the Lucknow CBI Special Court’s verdict acquitting all the 32 accused. Senior IUML Lok Sabha member P.K. Kunhali-

said that the Babri Masjid was demolished in broad daylight, the world had also seen under whose patronage the mosque was brought down and who was in power in UP at that time. Despite this, the decision of the CBI Special Court is astonishing. Maulana Madani added that on November 9, 2019, a five-member constitution bench of the Supreme Court, while de-
livering its judgment on the Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute, had said that the Babri Masjid was not built by demolishing a temple. Therefore, it was considered a criminal act to place an idol inside the Babri Masjid and then demolish it, and it was also said that the people on whose behalf this act was carried out are also guilty. “Is it justice or is it
kutty told the media: “One wonders if justice has been delivered in this case.” “Even the apex court of the country had earlier said that it was an unlawful act what happened then.” The CBI Special Court hearing the Babri Masjid demolition case of December 6, 1992, acquitted all the 32 accused on Wednesday saying it was spontaneous and not a planned move.
Muslim Personal Law Board to challenge Babri verdict in HC The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) said that it will appeal against the special CBI court verdict in the Babri Masjid demolition case in the high court. AIMPLB Secretary Zafaryab Jilani said that the judgment pronounced on Wednesday by the special CBI court in the case was wrong. “We will appeal against
the judgment in the High Court,” said the lawyer, who was also part of the Babri Masjid Action Committee. Prominent Sunni cleric and AIMPLB member Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahali said everyone knows how the “Babri masjid was demolished in full public view” and the “law of the land was shredded to pieces”.

Curious twists and turns
W
hat was to have been an investigation by a high profile agency-CBI- into Bollywood actor late Sushant Singh Rajput’s death on June 14 has gone totally off track as the late actor is no longer the focus but the Bollywood-drug angle. The case of Sushant Singh Rajput’s unnatural death was handed over to the CBI after the Centre on August 5, accepted the Bihar government’s recommendation for a CBI investigation. Expectedly or not, the CBI taking over the case initially made the headlines and many expected some breakthrough. The family’s suspicion of foul play was re-strengthened when family lawyer Vikas Singh claimed that an AIIMS doctor told him that Sushant’s death could be due to strangulation. However, according to media reports, this was shot down by Dr Sudhir Gupta, head of the AIIMS forensic panel, who rejected the allegation of strangulation. The AIIMS forensic team claims it has prepared its report, but the CBI is unwilling to accept this report. It is because of this Sushant’s family members have doubts about the probe. There has been little or no headway in the probe since the agency has given no updates. The CBI has yet to act on the claims of two psychiatrists who treated the late actor. The two psychiatrists who were treating Sushant Singh Rajput have made claims that completely contradicts his family’s. The mental health professionals in their explosive revelations revealed that Sushant had been battling bipolar disorder symptoms since he was 20, and also showed signs of Attention Deficit Disorder. Dr Susan Walker and Dr Chavda told CBI officials that the actor suffered through symptoms in early childhood. It is time CBI should come out clean and reveal the status and progress made so far in its probe. However, the case has taken a new turn after the Narcotics Control Bureau(NCB) got involved in the case, when an alleged narcotic drugs angle cropped up in the case. After Rhea reportedly admitted to doing drugs, she along with her brother Showik Chakraborty, Sushant’s staff Dipesh Sawant and Samuel Miranda and Showik’s friends have been detained by the NCB. Based on her “confessions”, there is now a line-up of Bollywood actors like Deepika Padukone, Sara Ali Khan and Shraddha Kapoor before the NCB. With the NCB having taken centre stage, the CBI which was to focus on the suicide or murder angle, has been keeping a very low profile. Now the NCB’s daily interrogations have hogged the limelight explosive and this has led the late actor’s family to rightly believe that the case was veering off track. In her bail plea, Rhea said the late actor did drugs and admitted to it. However, a court in Mumbai rejected the plea and extended her judicial custody further till October 6. Family members talking to media, have expressed helplessness on what is the actual status of the CBI probe. Earlier, from subsequent allegations of murder and embezzlement, then claims of a “Bollywood drug mafia” have brought media focus to the so-called narcotics racket – a potential thriller that could even turn out to become another Bollywood blockbuster.
DailyDevotion The Assigning of the Call
I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church… —Colossians 1:24 We take our own spiritual consecration and try to make it into a call of God, but when we get right with Him He brushes all this aside. Then He gives us a tremendous, riveting pain to fasten our attention on something that we never even dreamed could be His call for us. And for one radiant, flashing moment we see His purpose, and we say, “Here am I! Send me” (Isaiah 6:8). This call has nothing to do with personal sanctification, but with being made broken bread and poured-out wine. Yet God can never make us into wine if we object to the fingers He chooses to use to crush us. We say, “If God would only use His own fingers, and make me broken bread and poured-out wine in a special way, then I wouldn’t object!” But when He uses someone we dislike, or some set of circumstances to which we said we would never submit, to crush us, then we object. Yet we must never try to choose the place of our own martyrdom. If we are ever going to be made into wine, we will have to be crushed—you cannot drink grapes. Grapes become wine only when they have been squeezed. I wonder what finger and thumb God has been using to squeeze you? Have you been as hard as a marble and escaped? If you are not ripe yet, and if God had squeezed you anyway, the wine produced would have been remarkably bitter. To be a holy person means that the elements of our natural life experience the very presence of God as they are providentially broken in His service. We have to be placed into God and brought into agreement with Him before we can be broken bread in His hands. Stay right with God and let Him do as He likes, and you will find that He is producing the kind of bread and wine that will benefit His other children.

Post-mortem
Geriatrics –the new medical speciality for the elderly “To care for those who once cared for us is one of the highest honors”- Tia Walker 1 st October is celebrated as “International Day for Older Persons”. The theme for the year 2020 is “Pandemics: Do they change how we address age and ageing” Geriatrics is a specialised branch of medicine dealing with care of the elderly. The older adult has a tendency to accumulate diseases, disabilities and deformities over the years unlike the younger adult. Until recent years, the elderly were treated the same way as the younger adult. Today, recognition of the unique differences of illnesses in the elderly, the advancement of medicine and the development of newer approaches has yielded a new speciality, the Geriatrics. The care of the elderly requires patience and participation of the patients and family caregiver and a structured team approach for both short-term and long-term care is the need of the hour. Geriatrics in India: India, along with developed and developing countries has been promoting elderly care (Geriatrics) under the National Program for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE) since 2010. As the program requires proactive roles in all aspects of promotion, prevention, curative and rehabilitation services, Public Private
Partnership (PPP) between the Government and the Private Institutions may bring better and targeted outcomes. What makes Geriatric Care different? Elderly Care (Geriatric Medicine) is a multi-disciplinary care anchored by a Geriatrician, who also do the follow up and long-term care using holistic approach. Just as young adults are different, the elderly are different physically, mentally, socially and spiritually. Age brings changes; some of which are good whereas some may be challenging and adapting to new changes may be difficult. Many of the elderly problems need support and care rather than jumping to medication. The illness presentation can be different from young people with typical clinical features; in fact, most elderly may present illness atypically. Some abnormal findings in an elderly may even be normal. Hence, follow up and close observation are beneficial. Careful and planned intervention can prevent or minimise the subtle changes with potential disastrous outcome. Geriatrics Care – how it is done? Geriatric Care, like any other branch of medicine provides promotion, prevention and curative aspects of care.
The approaches are built to suit the elderly health needs. Prevention of the GERIATRIC GIANTS (Goliath like threats to the elderly) including fall, frailty confusion, infection etc. need special attention. Preventive measure and enhancing activities by means of physiotherapy, treatment of chronic illness, dealing with multiple medications (polypharmacy) and the use of prophylactic measures by means of medicine or non- medicine or both and many others are incorporated in Geriatric Care. The Geriatric Practitioner may suggest modification in prescription of any speciality to suit the needs or purpose of a patient. All focus is on the wellbeing of the elderly. Life expectation is calculated; treatment risk and benefits are discussed with patient and family for any procedure that involves substantial amount of risks. The success of Geriatric Care lies in educating the caregivers at home and systematic home visit by the Care Team. The elderly should be evaluated adequately but not overtly burdened with batteries of investigations and assessment. Therefore, sorting out the problems which need immediate attention and other contributory co-morbidities that can be evaluated and treated later
India’s shame! Dalits anger!
H
is also a concern. Overall, Geriatric Care aims at improving the quality of life and maintains independence in activities as much as possible. When is Geriatric Care applicable? Deciding which age is the right age to be included into the elderly category is difficult and differs from country to country. A commonly accepted one is 60 years and above. Some countries, consider 65 years as the retirement age. However, it is not that everyone ages the same way. An elderly adult can be strong and healthy till the final stage of life. In the early phase of six decades, one may be strong and doesn’t seem to have any age related health issues. But the healthy adaptation, healthy habit formation and preparing for the difficult days ahead have to be incorporated into the care protocols well in advance once a person reaches 60. Whatever the age may be, everyone benefits from the adoption of a healthy lifestyle, avoidance of harmful habits, modification on diet and nutrition, fall prevention and other preventive measures including immunization against infectious diseases and medical therapy. Therefore, if any six decade adult wishes to be seen under the Geriatrics Care Clinic, it is
C
acceptable and appropriate. What is focused / done in Geriatrics Clinics? The following common issues faced by the elderly are: Memory problem (Dementia, Delirium, Depression); Movement and mobility disorders (Parkinson’s disease, Parkisonism Syndrome); Low mood/ Anxiety (Late life depression, Anxiety disorders and Adjustment disorders); General weakness & difficulties with performing Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) (Frailty, failure to thrive); Too many different medicines (Polypharmacy); Fear of fall, history of fall with/without fractures (Fall prevention, Fragility fracture); Immunization; Difficulties with urination and stool control; Pain/ Palliative Care especially in terminally ill patients. Sometimes Home based care may be best suited for the elderly with slow progressive illnesses like Dementia, Parkinson’s disease, Rehabilitations, End of Life Care (EOLC), Stroke and other bed-ridden patients for various reasons. Geriatrics Emergency: Ageing is a slow process and does not happen overnight! Therefore, any rapid deterioration of function, sudden fall (unless cluttered and slippery environments), confusion, immobility and changes
of behaviour should be a trigger to seek medical attention. The joy of caring for the aged! Elderly care is very rewarding, both in terms of quality and quantity. There are evidences of decreased number of fall, decreased number of hospitalisation and improved quality of life with longevity with elderly care. Preservation of functional independence, restoring lost function or enhancing the activity of daily living (ADL) improves quality of life for the elderly patient. The elderly people are full of wisdom, gratefulness, humour and having readiness to bless the younger generations. The presence of elders in the community reflects the advancement and progress of the society. The one highest virtue of a society, a community or a country lies in the values and care of the weak, widows or widowers, women and children. So, let us arise and be involved; pray and contribute to the care of our older people, who has been a source of blessing, wisdom and joy to us. Dr Nepuni Athikho, DNB Family Medicine, Fellowship in Palliative Medicine, PG Diploma in Geriatric Medicine, Eden Medical Centre, Dimapur

SC refuses to postpone civil services exam
public. According to the plea this 7-hour offline exam, will be taken by approximately six lakh aspirants at test centres in 72 cities. “Conducting the aforesaid examination across India at such perilous time, is nothing else but putting lives of lakhs of young students (including Petitioners herein) at utmost risk and danger of disease and death. Also, the natural calamities like flood, incessant rain, landslides etc. are likely to directly affect the life and health of the Petitioners and many similarly situated students”, it said. “Hence, the impugned Revised Calendar is utterly arbitrary, unreasonable, whimsical and patently violative of the “Right to Health” and “Right to Life” of the Petitioners herein and lakhs of similarly situated students, under Article 21,” the petition stated. The plea said the Civil Services Exam, being a recruitment examination, is altogether different from an academic examination and in the event of its postponement; there would not be any question of delay or loss of any academic session. It said that due to nonavailability of exam centres in their home towns, many aspirants are facing “unimaginable” hardship due to non-availability of or unsafe health conditions in, the PG accommodation/ hostels/ hotels etc., where they are forced to stay with their family members, once they are travelling to an outstation Examination Centre.
NEW DELHI, SEP 30 (PTI): The Supreme Court Wednesday refused to postpone UPSC civil services preliminary exam, to be held on October 4, because of COVID-19 pandemic and floods in several parts of the country. A bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar, B R Gavai and Krishna Murari asked the Centre to consider granting one more chance to those aspirants who may not appear in their last attempt allowed for the exam due to the pandemic. It also refused to consider the plea for clubbing of this year’s exam with that of 2021 saying “this will have a cascading effect”. The bench was hearing a plea seeking postponement of the Civil Services Exam for two to three months, so that the flood/ incessant rains recede and the COVID-19 curve flattens. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) opposed the plea saying all necessary precautions have been taken and adequate arrangements have been made for holding the exam. The bench said that as some public exams have recently been conducted successfully by the authorities by observing proper protocols, it is possible to conduct the UPSC preliminary examinations. It added that the grievance of lack of transport facility at 72 examination centres and sub-centres have not been substantiated by the petitioners. Dealing with the grievances of the aspirants that due to the COVID-19 situ-
ation students could not take the coaching and other facilities, the bench referred to the availability of facility of online study material to them. The top court said that it has impressed upon ASG SV Raju, appearing for the Centre, to explore the possibility of giving one more opportunity to such students who fail to take up the exam in their last attempt. It said that a formal decision can be taken by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) expeditiously. On allowing suspected COVID-19 aspirants to take up their exams, the bench said that it is not possible to enter into this arena as a matter of fact medical SoP required that a patient is needed to be quarantined as it may result in exposure of other candidates. It noted that UPSC has made separate arrangements for students suffering from cough and cold. On September 28, the top court had asked the UPSC to apprise it about the “logistical arrangements” made for conducting civil

ISRO to launch its Venus mission in 2025, France to take part: CNES will be flown on an Indian exploration mission,” CNES said in a statement. However, there was no comment from ISRO. After the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan) and Moon missions Chandrayaan-1 and 2, ISRO has set its eyes on Venus for carrying out its inter-planetary mission. France and India share a robust collaboration in arena of the space. It is one of the three nations with whom India collaborates in the strategic sectors of
nuclear, space and defence -- the other two being the US and Russia. In March 2018, the two countries also issued a ‘Joint Vision for Space Cooperation’. India and France are also working on ISRO’s human space mission Gaganyaan project, which aims to send three Indians to space by 2022. Since September 2018, CNES and ISRO have set up a working group focused on cooperation in the field of human spaceflight, the French agency said.
NEW DELHI, SEP 30 (PTI): The BJP on Wednesday sought to scotch speculation about differences with Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party, asserting that all the three National Democratic Alliance partners will fight Bihar assembly polls together. After a long meeting of party leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah and president J P Nadda besides those from the state, BJP general secretary Bhupender Yadav told reporters that talks with allies on the seat-sharing arrangement will be completed in a couple of days. Yadav is the party’s in-charge for the state’s affairs. “A lot of development work has happened in Bihar and the NDA will fight the polls on the basis of this under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The BJP, JD(U) and the LJP will fight the polls strongly along with Jitan Ram Manjhi, who has joined hands with JD(U), and will form government again with a three/ fourth majority,” he said. Shah’s presence in the meeting at Nadda’s residence indicated that the BJP has virtually given a final shape to its position on the seat-sharing deal before it enters into the final round of talks with its allies. Official sources said the final seat-sharing arrangement is likely to be announced soon and the list of candidates for the first phase of polls will be out by October 4 or 5.

NEW DELHI, SEP 30 (PTI): India and China on Wednesday held another round of diplomatic dialogue on the border standoff in eastern Ladakh, and emphasised the need to implement the decisions arrived at the last round of military talks to avoid misunderstandings and maintain stability on the ground. After the virtual talks under the framework of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on border affairs, the Ministry of External Affairs(MEA) said the two sides reviewed the current situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and “positively evaluated” the outcome of the sixth meeting of their senior commanders last week. “They emphasised the need to implement the steps
outlined in the joint press release issued after the last meeting of the senior commanders so as to avoid misunderstandings and to maintain stability on the ground. In this context, the need to strengthen communication, especially between the ground commanders, was emphasized by both sides,” the MEA said in a statement. Corps commanders of the two sides held a nearly 14-hour-long meeting on September 21 following which they announced a slew of decisions to deescalate the tense situation. The decisions included to stop sending more troops to the frontline, refrain from unilaterally changing the situation on the ground and avoid taking any actions that may further complicate matters. On Wednesday’s talks,
the MEA also said the two sides reviewed the current situation along the LAC and had frank and detailed discussions on the developments since the last meeting of the WMCC on August 20. “They also noted that the agreement between the two Foreign Ministers should be sincerely implemented to ensure disengagement at all the friction points along the LAC,” the MEA said. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi had held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation(SCO) meet in Moscow in the backdrop of a deteriorating situation in eastern Ladakh triggered by a fresh confrontation between the armies of the two countries.

(From p-1) It stated that the general public and businessmen including transporters have incurred heavy losses in the past six months due to Covid-19 pandemic. At this juncture, the meeting affirmed that “we cannot afford another bandh or agitation.” The meeting also urged upon the state government to take up the issue with its Assam counterpart and exert strong pressure on the latter, since the agitation has impacted the smooth flow of supplies. DCCI pointed out that due to the bandh truckloads of essential commodities and perishable items were rotting and getting damaged. It asked who will be responsible for the losses and payment of compensation? DCCI has also appealed to the commissioner of police Dimapur to communicate with Assam police to improve police escort for safe passage of trucks and transporters crossing the inter-state border. The meeting also lauded the Dimapur police for the prompt action in pursuing the case of the September 22 killing of a truck driver (Jiten Gogoi) in Dimapur. The joint meeting affirmed confidence that Dimapur police would expedite the investigation to its logical conclusion. The meeting also appealed to the responsible authority to compensate the family members of the slain truck driver.
(From p-1) Pointing out that surface transport was one of the major means through which goods were shipped to Nagaland and, which solely depended on other States for all its needs, PAC said the burden of lackadaisical attitude of the State government in rooting out illegal collection was ultimately borne by the layman who feels the pinch the most. It demanded that the government should ensure that goods-laden vehicles entering/passing the State’s commercial hub should not face any harassment and given safe passage from the town to Khuzama. PAC also reminded the government that the deadline was ticking and added that it would not shy away from the desire of the society for peace, justice and equality.

While at Apollo Gleneagles we have successfully carried out liver transplants for many years now, the need of the hour was to have a dedicated team of surgeons capable of conducting liver transplants. Trump, Biden clash over several issues in debate
WASHINGTON, SEP 30 (PTI): US President Donald Trump and his Democratic rival Joe Biden fiercely clashed over a number of issues, including the COVID-19 pandemic, racism, economy and climate, during the first presidential debate, marked by angry interruptions and bitter accusations. During the first of the three presidential debates in Cleveland, Ohio, on Tuesday night moderated by Fox News anchor Chris Wallace, 74-year-old Trump and his 77-year-old rival Biden also traded barbs about each other’s families, making it one of the most chaotic White House debates in years. “The fact is that everything he’s (Trump) saying so far is simply a lie. I’m not here to call out his lies. Everybody knows he’s a liar,” Biden said. Tr ump responded, saying Biden is a liar and graduated last in his class. in the US, Biden said the president has “no plan” to fight the deadly disease and he lied to Americans. “He still hasn’t even acknowledged that he knew this was happening, knew how dangerous it was going to be back in February, and he didn’t even tell you. He is on record as saying it. He panicked or he just looked at the stock market, one of the two, because guess what, a lot of people die and lot more are going to die unless he gets a lot smarter, a lot quicker,” he said. Trump hit back, saying, “don’t ever use the word smart with me.” “When you talk about numbers, you don’t know

how many people died in China. You don’t know how many people died in Russia. You don’t know how many people died in India. They don’t exactly give you a right number. Just so you understand,” Trump said, defending his handling of the crisis. As the two rivals c l a s h e d o n m e d i c a t e, Trump said the Democrats were planning socialising of medicine. Biden replied, “What this clown is doing?” Trump also justified his administration’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate deal, saying the agreement was a “disaster”. vowed to rejoin the historic accord if voted to power. They also clashed over the issue of racism in America during the debate wherein the Republican leader hesitated to condemn white supremacists. “Are you willing, tonight, to condemn white supremacists and militia groups and to say that they need to stand down?” the moderator asked Trump. “I would say almost everything I see is from the left wing, not the right wing,” Trump replied. “I’m willing to do anything. I want to see peace.” When pressed further, he said, “Give me a name”, to which Biden chimed in, “Proud Boys”, referring to a far-right outfit that has been designated as a hate group by the nonprofit legal advocacy organisation, Southern Poverty Law Centre. “Proud Boys -- Stand back, stand by,” Trump responded and then moved attention to the left-wing anti-fascist movement known as Antifa. Biden alleged that Trump has used everything
as a “dog whistle” to try to generate racist hatred and division. Defending his record as president, Trump attacked Biden for his role in crafting the 1994 crime bill. “I’m letting people out of jail now,” he said to Biden. “You’ve treated the black community as bad as anyone in the country. You called them superpredators and you’ve called them worse than that.” “I never said that,” Biden responded. The former vice president was also critical of Trump’s handling of the events after the death of African-American George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis. Trump also asserted that he paid millions of dollars in income taxes and dubbed the recent New York Times report that he paid just USD 750 in income tax in the year he was elected US president as “wrong”. Biden described Trump as the “worst president America has ever had.”
Pakistan government to push for Nawaz Sharif’s deportation from UK ISLAMABAD, SEP 30 (PTI): Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has asked relevant authorities to take steps to bring back PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif from London, where he has been staying since November 2019 on medical grounds, and to ensure that the former premier faces the corruption cases pending against him in various Pakistani courts, according to a media report. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, the Dawn News reported, quoting a Cabinet member whose identity was not revealed. Khan asked the authorities to pursue the matter vigorously, the report said. According to the Cabinet member, the government had earlier sent a request to the British government for the Pakistan Muslim LeagueNawaz (PML-N) leader’s repatriation. However, it would again send a fresh application now. Besides a normal application, a formal request

for his extradition would also be made. “Although we have no extradition treaty with the United Kingdom, wanted people can be repatriated under special arrangements as we had also handed over some people to the UK,” the member said. The Islamabad High Court on Wednesday said that it needs to be determined if Sharif was evading court proceedings on purpose. The federal government told the court that the non-bailable arrest warrants issued for Sharif earlier this month were not received at his residence in
London. Additional Attorney General (AAG) Tariq Khokhar said that the arrest warrants were sent to Sharif ’s residence through Royal Mail Special Delivery but a person named Waqar Ahmed refused to receive the delivery. On September 15, the Islamabad High Court issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Sharif who failed to surrender before it despite clear warning by the bench. The court said the onus was on the federal government to bring back Sharif from London to stand a trial in Pakistan. The PML-N had said it honoured the court decision, but the party supremo would return once his health permitted him. The three-time premier, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Muhammad Safdar were convicted in the Avenfield properties case on July 6, 2018. Sharif was also sentenced to seven years in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills case in December 2018.

B RU S S E L S, S E P 3 0 (IANS): After a wait of 493 days since the last federal election, Belgium got its new Prime Minister Alexander De Croo on Wednesday. De Croo is set to lead the country’s 7-party Vivaldi coalition of Flemish and Francophone socialists, liberals and greens. De Croo will spearhead the Vivaldi coalition in steering the country through the aftershocks of the pandemic, and is set to face fierce pushback from the Flemish opposition parties, sidelined from the incoming administration despite making big gains in the election, reported Brussels Times. The choice of De Croo follows calls for the country’s new Prime Minister to be a Dutch-speaker, since the last PM to lead a full-fledged government, Charles Michel, was Francophone. As De Croo’s fellow government formator, the Francophone socialist Paul Magnette, who leads the largest party within the Vivaldi coalition, was also tipped for premiership. Talks are ongoing

Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said Armenian forces started shelling the town of Tartar on Wednesday morning, damaging “civilian infrastructure” and wounding people, while Armenian military officials reported that Azerbaijani forces were bombing positions of the Nagorno-Karabakh army in the north of the war-torn region. Common cold in past may provide protection from COVID-19: Study
P
eople who have had a bout of seasonal or common cold in the past may get some protection from COVID-19, according to a study which suggests that immunity to the disease is likely to last a long time -- maybe even a lifetime. The study, published in the journal mBio, is the first to show that the COVID-19causing virus, SARS-CoV-2, induces memory B cells, long-lived immune cells that detect pathogens, create antibodies to destroy them and remember them for the future. The next time that pathogen tries to enter the body, those memory B cells can hop into action even faster to clear the infection before it starts, according to the researchers from the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) in the US. Because memory B cells can survive for decades, they could protect COVID19 survivors from subsequent infections for a long time, but further research will have to confirm this. The study is also the first to report cross-reactivity of memory B cells -- meaning B cells that once attacked cold-causing coronaviruses appeared to also recognise
SARS-CoV-2. The researchers believe this could mean that anyone who has been infected by a common coronavirus -- which is nearly everyone -- may have some degree of pre-existing immunity to COVID-19. “When we looked at blood samples from people who were recovering from COVID-19, it looked like many of them had a preexisting pool of memory B cells that could recognise SARS-CoV-2 and rapidly produce antibodies that could attack it,” said study lead author Mark Sangster, a research professor at URMC. The findings are based on a comparison of blood samples from 26 people who were recovering from mild to moderate COVID-19 and 21 healthy donors whose samples were collected six to 10 years ago -- long be-
fore they could have been exposed to COVID-19. From those samples, the researchers measured levels of memory B cells and antibodies that target specific parts of the Spike protein, which exists in all coronaviruses and is crucial for helping the viruses infect cells. The Spike protein looks and acts a little different in each coronavirus, but one of its components, the S2 subunit, stays pretty much the same across all of the viruses. Memory B cells can’t tell the difference between the Spike S2 subunits of the different coronaviruses and attack indiscriminately, the researchers said. They found that was true for beta-coronaviruses, a subclass that includes two cold-causing viruses as well as SARS, MERS and SARSCoV-2. (PTI)

ilm director Anurag Kashyap has been summoned by the Mumbai Police to appear at Versova Police station at 11 am on Thursday in connection with the sexual assault case filed by an actress. On September 23, the actress had accused Kashyap of rape, outraging her modesty and wrongful confinement in 2013. Seeking help from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she had claimed that Kashyap had also behaved inappropriately with three other actors. An FIR was registered against Kashyap the same day after the actress and her lawyer approached the Versova Police station. He was booked under Indian Penal Code Sections 376 (I) (rape), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman

with intent to outrage her modesty,), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 342 (wrongful confinement), the official said, adding that further investigation is underway. Kashyap, who has been outspoken against certain policies of the central government, had issued a statement denying the allegations and called the actress’ claim an attempt
to “silence” him for his outspoken views. After the actress’ allegations, several female actors who had worked with Kashyap in the past came out in his support, including his ex-wife Kalki. On Sunday, the actress and her lawyer Nitin Satpute had visited Versova police station to demand that the complaint be investigated as a matter of priority. She had also threatened to begin a hunger strike unless the police arrested Kashyap soon. On Monday, the actress met Republican Party of India chief Ramdas Athawale. The Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment later announced that the RPI would launch an agitation if Kashyap wasn’t arrested within a week. (IndianExpress)

Kelly - who has sixyear-old River and fouryear-old Remington with her ex-spouse - being sued comes as she’s been having a tough time of it of late as her life has ‘’been a little bit of a dumpster’’ over the last few month because of her divorce from Brandon. She said: ‘’I mean, it’s no secret. My life has been a little bit of a dumpster ... personally, it’s been a little hard the last couple months. I’ve been talking to friends that have been through divorce. I don’t know how people go through that without having some kind of outlet because it is the worst thing ever for everyone involved.’’ However, Kelly previously insisted she won’t
discuss her divorce for the sake of her kids. The ‘Piece by Piece’ hitmaker said: ‘’I am a very open person, but I’m not going to be able to be truly open about this in certain aspects because there’s kids involved ... I think that I will navigate a way in which to be open and honest about it eventually, probably via the show, and it’ll probably, I’m assuming, happen organically when someone says something in conversation or something. It definitely wouldn’t be planned ... But my children and his older children - there are a lot of little hearts involved in this and while people feel, ‘Oh my gosh, what a loss ...’ imagine how it is in the epicentre of the storm. It’s a lot to process and deal with, just as a family. So because it’s not just me, I probably won’t go too deep with it.’’ (Contactmusic)

Warne is also impressed seeing Steve Smith open the innings in T20 cricket for the first time and he has started well with two half-centuries in as many games. “I liked it, him (Smith) coming to open the innings,” opined Warne on Smith’s 69 and 50 in the first two games. “I am always a big believer in your best player having the opportunity to face the most amount of deliveries, so for me you know Jos Buttler, Steve Smith and Sanju are one, two and three, respectively,” said the king of leg-spin bowling. In fact, Warne feels that Smith and chief coach Andrew McDonald shouldn’t tinker with the top three, come what may. “Steve Smith and Andrew McDonald might have different ideas but I would always want my best players facing the maximum number of balls. We’ve got so many good players who could play so many different roles, but I personally like Steve Smith at the top,” Warne said. Add Ben Stokes to it and Warne feels Royals would be a formidable opposition on any surface. Stokes is missing the first part of IPL due to his father’s illness but a possibility remains that he would be available during the later stages. “ H o p e f u l l y, B e n Stokes would play a part this year, he’s a big loss and our thoughts are with him, but you know, add Ben to the team that played the other night and it looks a very very, good side,” Warne added.

Find playing style that suits your players: Dennerby
New Delhi, Sep 30 (IANS): Indian U-17 women’s football team head coach Thomas Dennerby believes it is very important for the coaches to first understand the attributes of players and then accordingly devise the playing style. Speaking to coaches across India at the ongoing international virtual coach-
ing conference organised by the All India Football Federation (AIFF), the highlyexperienced Swedish tactician on Wednesday said: “When I arrived in India in October 2019, we had a goal -- success at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. People would ask what style my team would play even before I had met the players. However, when you arrive
to work with a new team, you try to get an overview of the various things you need to know, such as the tactical, technical, fitness and mental aspects.” “Then, you try to find a way that suits the team best. You have to find your own playing style and vision.
Football is like philosophy, there is no wrong or right. One has to try to improve the way you want the team to play while seeing what is best for the players,” he added while speaking on the topic ‘Current playing style of the U-17 World Cup team’.

Aston Villa sign Ross Barkley: on season-long loan STAMFORD BRIDGE, SEP 30 (AGENCIES): Aston Villa have signed England midfielder Ross Barkley from Chelsea on a season-long loan, reports BBC Sports. Barkley, who has 33 international caps, has been at Stamford Bridge since moving from Everton in January 2018. The 26-year-old has played three times for Chelsea this season, scoring once. “Capturing a player of Ross’s quality is a real coup for our club and I am certain he will thrive here and improve our team,” said Villa manager Dean Smith. Barkley left boyhood club Everton following 179 appearances and 27 goals for the Toffees. The attacking midfielder has fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea after the signings of forwards Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and winger Hakim Ziyech and is yet to start in the Premier League this season. He scored in Chelsea’s 6-0 third-round thrashing of Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.

New Delhi, Sep 30 (PTI): Of all the talented cricketers that Shane Warne has seen over the years, Sanju Samson is the one that strikes him as “something else” and the Rajasthan Royals mentor feels that the big-hitting batsman would become an India regular in all formats if this IPL goes well for him. The clamour to have the enormously gifted Kerala batsman play regularly for the national team has grown over the years and knocks of 74 (32 balls) and 85 (42 balls) for RR in the ongoing IPL have only amplified the noise. Warne, the IPL-winning former Royals captain and brand ambassador, believes the day is not far away. ‘’I hope Sanju has a consistent tournament this year. If he has a consistent tournament this year, I think you will see him representing India in all forms of the game,” Warne told PTI in an exclusive interview. The legendary Australian is impressed with Samson’s maturity and his evolution as a batsman, who is taking way more responsibility in this edition. “He’s (Samson) such a talented player. I have seen a lot of talented cricketers in my time but watching Samson bat in the nets, being around him, speaking to him over the years and now watching him evolve, I mean he is something else,” he said. “He is a very special talent and I hope he hit the international stage very soon,” added Warne, who is currently in the UAE.

Clinical KKR beat Royals by 37 runs
Dubai, Sep 30 (PTI): India’s 2018 Under-19 World Cup-winning pace duo of Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti led a clinical bowling display to help Kolkata Knight Riders register a comprehensive 37-run win over Rajasthan Royals in their IPL match here on Wednesday. Mavi and Nagarkoti, who battled injuries in the last two seasons, claimed two wickets apiece, while Varun Chakravarthy also got two to restrict the Royals to 137 for 9 in 20 overs while chasing a target of 175. This was after star Australian pacer Pat Cummins (1/19 from 3 overs) dismissed Steve Smith (3) as the Royals crumbled on a tricky run chase to suffer their first defeat after two successive wins. For KKR, this was their second successive victory and they jumped to second spot behind Delhi Capitals. The margin of defeat would have been much bigger but for Tom Curran who remained unbeaten on 54 (from 36 balls) for a lost cause. The casual and carefree manner of batting by the Royals top-order was baffling after Smith opted
deck hard and clocked the fastest delivery of the tournament (152.1 kph) in a fiery spell, taking two key wickets of KKR -- in-form opener Shubman Gill (47 from 34 balls) and skipper Dinesh Karthik (1). Archer dismissed Gill three runs short of a second successive fifty. In his next over, Archer dismissed Karthik with a beauty, full of pace that went straight with a bit of inswing and the KKR skipper was forced to play, edging straight to Jos Buttler. Andre Russell was finally promoted up at No. 5 but the star Jamaican became victim of Ankit Rajpoot while trying to accelerate the scoring rate. Women’s Challenger series to be held in UAE from Nov 4-9: IPL sources New Delhi, Sep 30 (PTI): The much-awaited Challenger series, popularly known as women’s mini IPL, will be held in the United Arab Emirates from November 4 to 9, a senior IPL official confirmed the development on Wednesday. Women’s cricket in India has come to a grinding halt because of COVID-19 pandemic and there was a lot of criticism directed at the BCCI even though president Sourav Ganguly had consistently maintained that the threeteam tournament will certainly take place which has now been confirmed by a senior official currently in the UAE. “Yes, the dates of the tournament has been finalised. It will be held from November 4 to 9. There will be single round robin league between the three teams Trailblazers, Velocity and Supernovas along with the final. In all four matches will be held,” a senior IPL official privy to the development told PTI on conditions of anonymity. “The final has been slotted on November 9 as we didn’t want to schedule on the the day of the men’s final. There is enormous in-
terest for the women’s event and its only commercially prudent that it is separated from men’s event,” the official said. Only last week, the BCCI has announced the new women selection panel under former left-arm spinner Neetu David, which has now been entrusted to pick the three squads. It is expected that the teams will be flying to the UAE by the second week of October and will undergo a six-day mandatory quarantine period on arrival unless the health safety rules change. “The girls haven’t had training for such a long time and they would need to be given adequate time for net practice,” the source said. It is expected that all three teams will have
more Indian girls this time considering the fact that for health safety reasons, teams need to carry more players. Also top players from Australia and England will not be available due to the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), where they have already signed prior contracts. The dates of WBBL are clashing with Women’s Challengers. Three Indian players Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur were expected to feature in WBBL but now they will not be a part of the cash rich women’s franchise league. The four matches are likely to be held in Sharjah or Dubai considering that Abu Dhabi has separate quarantine rules.
skipper Shreyas ONE Championship to return to action on Oct 9 Sports Minister Rijiju unveils new DCfined Rs 12 lakh logo of Sports Authority of India for slow over-rate
Kiren Rijiju New Delhi, Sep 30 (PTI): Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday unveiled the new Sports Authority of India (SAI) logo, which has been changed for the first time since the apex sports body’s inception in 1982. The new logo highlights ‘SAI’ in bold letters with depiction of an athlete’s flight to success in the background. The logo was unveiled in a brief ceremony
organised at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here, which was also attended by Sports Secretary Ravi Mittal, SAI Director General Sandip Pradhan and Indian Olympic Association President Narinder Batra among others. Speaking on the occasion, Sports Minister Rijiju said that soon after taking charge of the ministry, he proposed to change SAI’s logo and make it more
simple and meaningful. “The new logo is small but it’s meaning and goal is big. Logo is the identity of any organisation. SAI has been promoting sports in India for long but it’s old logo looked long and cluttered to me. So, I thought of a short logo where SAI’s name is more visible. The new logo is a thought of simplicity,” he said. “The new logo would be easier to display and would easily get imprint in anyone’s mind.” Rijiju reiterated his vision to witness among top 10 countries in 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. “In every work (we do), aim and objective is very important. There should be a target in mind and our target is to finish in top 10 in 2028 Olympics. “But to achieve that target, you need time and so we have taken a eight-year target. I have no doubts we can achieve our goal,” the minister said.
ABU DHABI, SEP 30 (PTI): Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer has been slapped with a fine of Rs 12 lakh after his team maintained a slow over-rate against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match here. Given that this was his first offence of the season, Iyer was fined Rs 12 lakh under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offence. “Delhi Capitals Captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their Dream11 Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Abu Dhabi on 29 September 2020,” an IPL release stated. “As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mr. Iyer was fined Rs 12 lakh,” it added.
NZ earn consolation win over Aus in final T20I
With the win, White Ferns also ended a 13-match white-ball losing streak against their trans-Tasman rivals. B r i sba n e , S e p 3 0 (IANS): New Zealand women’s team registered a five-wicket win over Australia in the third and final T20I of the three-match series played at the Allan Border Field on Wednesday. They, however, lost the series 1-2 having lost the previous two matches. The White Ferns first
restricted the hosts to 123/7 and then chased down the target with three balls to spare. For Australia who were put into bat, Ashleigh Gardner and skipper Meg Lanning made noticeable contributions of 29 and 21. For the visitors, Amelia Kerr starred with the ball as she returned with
figures of 2/18 from her four overs. Star trio of Sophie Devine, Lea Tahuhu and Amelia Kerr did the bulk of the damage as they removed five of Australia’s star-studded top six between them and restricted the hosts to a below par score. Skipper Devine made
a crucial 25 at the top of the order to begin the run chase, Australia fought back through a quick double-wicket blow. However, Amy Satterthwaite and Katey Martin put on a 52-run partnership to get the Kiwis within touching distance of the target. However, just when the visitors seemed to cruising towards the target, Australians again fought back with two quick wickets. Towards the end, allrounder Kerr hammered Megan Schutt down the ground and then over midwicket to secure a well-deserved win for the visitors. With the consolation win, White Ferns also ended a 13-match white-ball losing streak against their trans-Tasman rivals. The two teams will now contest in a threematch ODI series at the same venue beginning Saturday. Brief scores: Australia 123/7 (Ashleigh Gardner 29; Amelia Kerr 2/18) lose to New Zealand 125/5 (Amy Satterthwaite 30; Georgia Wareham 2/19) by five wickets.

New Delhi, Sep 30 (IANS): In far reaches of the interiors of Bankura district in West Bengal, football is a sport that enjoys immense popularity. Matches between local teams often draw a wholesome crowd. It would not have been more than a decade ago that a young boy named Jiten Murmu would go to these matches to support his favourite players. Hailing from a tribal community, he was introduced to the sport early on and is now set to lead the lines for Bhawanipore FC in the I-League Qualifier slated to begin from October 8. “It is incredible, now that I look back at my journey. We did not have a lot of means back then, but it was our belief and the love that my community shares for football, that eventually got me to where I am,” Murmu said while speaking to i-league.org. “We used to play with kids a few years older than us and that is how we quickly learnt how to make our way around the pitch.
