Today, all of you are Today, all of you are carrying on with immense
patience, celebrating the festival with restraint…. and hence, in our ongoing fight, our victory too is assured.” He requested people to be more cautions as many more festivals are on the way in the days to come. He called people to remember lockdown times when they got to know those close associates of society without whom their lives would have been very difficult. “Sanitisation workers, housekeepers & guards were with us in difficult times, now in festivals, we’ve to take them along. I earnestly urge you to ensure, in whatever way, in making them a part of your celebrations.” he said while also urged people to remember India’s brave soldiers, who are guarding borders even in these festival times. “We must celebrate only after remembering them. We must light a lamp for these brave sons & daughters of Mother India. The entire nation is with them,” he said.

Participating at the event, leaders of various organisations expressed their grief and horror at the incident. Delivering a shor t speech on the occasion, Dimapur Lotha Students’ Union (DLSU) president Benthungo Jungi said the programme was organised to show public support and solidarity to the family of the deceased. He also described the deceased as an innocent and obedient student, and was also a member of DLSU family. Terming the incident as “disheartening”, Jungi asserted that such reprehensible deeds had absolutely no place in the society, even as he conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family. In his speech, Lotha Hoho Dimapur chairman YL Jami quoted a verse from the book of John 3:16,

DIMAPUR, OCT 25 (NPN): Despite strict guidelines being issued by the government, hordes of people were seen flocking around puja pandals in Dimapur Sunday evening with little or no regard for social distancing norms while may were seen without mask. be, the scene on the ground was totally the opposite in Dimapur as there was no check or safety protocols being followed. Many were seen thronging the stalls setup along the roadsides, while people made bee-line outside designated pandals. The government had issued specific guidelines like disallowing temporary pandals on and by the side of any street, ban on setting up of mela/food stall or stalls selling any items etc. Dimapur has been the worst COVID-hit district in the state, with more than half of the cases being reported from the district. Recent festivals across the country– such as Ganesh
Chaturthi in Maharashtra and Onam in Kerala – have seen a considerable Covid spike. State Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) department on Saturday expressed serious concern that most of the COVID positive patients did not have travel history or known contact with a positive case-- a clear indication towards community transmission. The department also categorically stated that the state was witnessing uncontrolled spread in closed settings like offices, restaurants, bakeries, religious communities, increasing risk elsewhere. This, it said has increased the risk of spread in the community, adding “these are settings where super spreader events happen.” According to the department, “super-spreader events” are non-technical terms used to describe persons and events where the spread of COVID19 is much than under normal circumstances. Taking note of the uncontrolled spread in the state, the Health department warned of every possibility of re-imposing total lockdown in the State.
DIMAPUR, OCT 25 (NPN): The court of Civil Judge(Senior Division) Dimapur has ordered restraint over the newly installed team of Naga Council Dimapur(NCD) from functioning as executive officers of NCD, till further orders. ` In the October 19,2020 order, the court further stated that the restraint order was issued in the light of “continuous breach of rights” which has manifested as the core issue of the main suit over the action of installation of NCD office bearers while the matter was sub-judice. The learned judge observed that earlier while the case was still sub-judice, the respondents had it vacated under a questionable manner and published in a section of the media that “the case was settled” in order to mislead the applicants as well as the general public. Earlier, the court dismissed the plea of the petitioners that the new team was installed when the matter was still in court. The judge said the court vacated the July 19,2020 ad-interim injunction on August 13, 2020 and after which the new NCD team was installed. While not taking up contempt proceedings against the respondents (ex-president NCD and others), the court also took serious note of “misreport and misconception” on the interlocutory application and the main civil suit as published in a section of the press.
Strengthen PDA’s hands: Mmhonlumo Correspondent
KOHIMA, OCT 25 (NPN): State BJP on Sunday said that the by-elections have come at a crucial time when chief minister Neiphiu Rio was in pursuit to resolve the Naga political issue. The party, therefore, appealed to the people to strengthen the hands of the ruling PDA coalition. Speaking at a by-election campaign meeting for NDPP/PDA consensus candidate Medo Yokah, at Kitsubozou panchayat hall on Sunday, IT, S&T and NRE adviser and BJP national spokesperson Mmhonlumo Kikon opined that the Naga political issue could be solved not only by NPGs or Government of India, but also by the 60 legislators representing the
public through their contribution and leadership. Mentioning that an important outcome of the October 15 consultative meeting was its stress on “one solution”, he claimed that as a witness to instability during the pre-ceasefire days, it was the endeavour of the government that the present generation saw real peace and development. Lauding 14 Southern Angami-1 constituency for electing an educated and compassionate person like late Vikho-o Yhoshu, the adviser appealed to the electorate to vote for Medo Yhokha as he was young and had leadership qualities. State BJP president and minister H&TE and Tribal Affairs, Temjen Imna Along claimed that the PDA had been providing a stable
government for the past 2 years and seven months. Admitting that though there were rooms for improvement like providing better roads to the people, he further claimed that road conditions have improved in the State after the PDA government came to power in March 2018. He said that the electorate had a lot of power, he urged them to vote with their mind and not emotionally and vote for the right candidate. He said Medo Yhokha has the mandate and confidence of the chief minister and PDA. Himanta rejects museum for Muslims Guwahati, Oct 25 (IANS): The Education and Finance Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Sunday rejected the Congress proposal to set up a museum for the Muslims living in Char anchal (riverine area) of the state at the famous Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati. Congress MLA from Baghbar constituency (under Barpeta district), Sherman Ali Ahmed, who also belong from the Bengali Muslim community, last week proposed the Assam government to establish the museum for the Muslims living in Char-Chaporis (Riverine Islands) of the state at the famed Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati. Congress’s Lok Sabha member from Barpeta Abdul Khaleque strongly supported the proposal and criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government Minister for rejecting the proposal. Rejecting the proposal of setting up of the museum in Char-Chaporis (Riverine Islands), Sarma said that there is no separate identity and culture of the Muslims living in Char Anchal (Riverine areas) of Assam as most of the people had migrated from

Assam groups threaten to block entry into Meghalaya’s Garo Hills from Oct 29
TURA,OCT 25 (AGENCIES): As many as 40 organisations from Assam have threatened to block all routes going into Garo Hills in Meghalaya from October 29 after the stalemate in discussions over allowing entry to Assam traders and businessmen, reports The Northeast Today. The organisations include -- All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), All Moraan Students Union (AMSU) and other trade associations. The organisations, which met this week at Krishnai in Goalpara district of Assam, have promised to block all routes if the two states fail to hold discussions and ease restrictions imposed by the state of Meghalaya on traders and businessmen from Assam due to the scare of the pandemic. “When the entire
country has opened up for trade and movement, why is Meghalaya still making special restrictions? The MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs) has very strictly directed states not to impose restrictions on trading and movement of people, so why is the Meghalaya government adamant?” asked the organisations. The organisations added that the restrictions imposed were only on residents from Assam and outside. However, there were no such restrictions in place for residents of Meghalaya to travel through Assam. “It is unfair that they can come and we can’t go. If they want to impose a ban on entry, their residents should also not enter the state of Assam. We will stop all vehicular movement from Meghalaya coming into Assam between Daranggre and Agia (limited to Goalpara district for now),” said the

organisations. The organisations stated that the restrictions imposed by Meghalaya have hit small businessmen between the two states and given rise to a new wave of middlemen, who take goods from Assam and sell in Meghalaya for a much higher price. “The common man in both states is suffering due to these restrictions. You can feel it in the skyrocketing prices in Meghalaya for common goods. Here the tourist vehicle industry has been hit along with traders who have shops in Meghalaya but have not been able to run their shops as they are denied entry. How will the government compensate these losses?” they asked. The organisations had earlier threatened a complete block in the route but had not done so due to the Durga Puja festival. This time, we are determined to make good on the promise and stop all Meghalaya vehicles from coming into Assam through Goalpara district, the organisations threatened. They had also met the Goalpara district administration with their grievances and had been assured of a common ground being worked on.

Shillong, Oct 25: Former Meghalaya Assembly Deputy Speaker and BJP legislator, Sanbor Shullai on Sunday wrote to Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma seeking his intervention into the withdrawal of an FIR filed by Cachar BJP Youth Morcha president Amitesh Chakraborty against Khasi Student's Union (KSU) president Lambokstar Marngar. Shullai has requested Cachar BJP Youth Morcha president Amitesh Chakraborty to withdraw the FIR filed against Marngar in connection with the incident at lchamati after the murder of Khasi Students Union (KSU) member Lurshai Hynniewta. “The matter is a state affair and involvement or influence of elements from outside the state is not required. The matter is a local concern and should be best resolved peacefully by involving all the stakeholders of the state," Shullai's letter read. He said the lchamati incident “still continues to be the centre of attention and the reason for the current unpleasant and unwanted developments.” “An incident like this,
Sanbor Shullai
that unfortunately happened at Ichamati should have been prevented and avoided at all costs. This has led to an uneasy calm in the city of Shillong,” Shullai mentioned. Shullai informed Sarma that all genuine nontribals of the state have always been supportive of all local issues and have been living in peace with the tribals for generations. Stating that the Northeastern states are all raising their concerns for the influx of illegal migrants, Shullai said: “A misunderstanding on such fragile issue can jeopardize the peace among the generation old genuine non-tribals of the state.” The non-tribals of the state have been living in harmony with the Khasis,
Jaintias and Garos tribes, who themselves, are highly peace-loving by nature, the MLA said. “Thus as a responsible MLA of the BJP, I would request the president of BJYM Cachar District, Assam to kindly withdraw the FIR in best interest of the people of the state,” Shullai said in the letter. Shullai has also requested Chakraborty to withdraw the FIR filed against the KSU president Lambokstar Marngar “in the best interest of the people, state and the party”. “The matter is of serious concern and would require your kind intervention to ensure that peace and communal harmony prevails in the state,” Shullai informed Sarma.
RNSOM opposes ATSUM’s proposed 48-hour bandh Correspondent Imphal, Oct 25: A tribal based student body in Manipur on Sunday strongly opposed calling for bandh at a time people were reeling under COVID19 lockdown woes. The student body announced that it will not support the 48-hour inter-state bandh due to commence on October 26 proposed by the All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM). ATSUM, on Saturday, announced that the apex body of tribal based student bodies will go ahead with its proposed 48-hour inter-state bandh and banning implementation of national projects in the hill districts after a failed talks with the state government. The apex body has been pressing the Manipur government to announce the schedules of the elections to the autonomous district councils in hill districts and it has set October 25 deadline to address their demands. However, a talk with the government at the level of the state tribal affairs and hills Vungzagin Valte on Saturday failed to arrive at a consensus. As such, the apex body decided to go ahead with
its proposed stir from Monday (October 26) after consultation with its federal units. However, Rongmei Naga Students’ Organisation Manipur (RNSOM), in a release today, declared that it will not support the proposed stirs of ATSUM. As such, there will be no bandh along NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam section of NH-37) in Tamenglong and Noney district, it announced, Giving a bandh call in such a time while people of both hills and valley were reeling under post prolonged COVID-19 lockdown was “inappropriate, irrational and untimely,” RNSOM stated in the release. It stated that the people of the state were having a hard time on account of COVID-19 pandemic both in hills and valleys. Thousands of public were struggling to meet their daily requirement while the state’s economy was just gaining momentum tardily post prolonged lockdown. As such, “RNSOM resolved not to support any bandh at this point of time including the 48-hour inter-state bandh and ban on construction work of national projects in the
state from 26th October 2020 as declared by ATSUM,” it added. “The declared bandh is considered inappropriate, irrational and untimely,” the student body added. R N S O M h oweve r supported ATSUM’s call for early conduct of the elections to six ADCs in hill districts and urged the state government to expedite and conduct the ADC elections at the earliest “best opportune time” in larger interest of the people and as per the Manipur (Hills Areas) District Council Act, 1973. RNSOM will monitor the work progress of all the national projects within the proposed 48-hour interstate bandh. “The general public, all national project contractors may execute their respective normal activities without any hindrances and restrictions,” RNSOM declared. There will be no bandh on national projects and NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam highway) under Noney and Tamenglong districts, it declared. The ATSUM has been pressing the state government to conduct the due elections to the six ADCs in hill districts by October/ November 2020 as sched-
uled by the government. The state has 10 hill districts out of which five were newly created. However, all the districts are still covered by the six ADCs –Churachandpur, Chandel, Ukhrul, Senapati, Tamenglong and Sadar Hills. The terms of the ADCs expired in May last. A cabinet decision of the N Biren Singh government had deferred the elections till October-November by extending the terms for six months. When the state government allegedly failed to take up necessary steps to hold the elections as per the schedule, ATSUM recently submitted memorandums to the state governor and chief minister, drawing their attention towards holding the elections in time. Alleging that no positive response has come up till date, ATSUM announced that the apex body decided to go ahead with the proposed stirs from October 26. Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO) and the Zeliangrong Students Union Manipur (ZSUM), a Tamenglong based student body had already given go ahead signal to the proposed stirs of the ATSUM.

Overdue admission
N
agaland’s COVID-19 tally of around 8600 as on October 25,2020 seems fairly high for some but low for others. In Arunachal Pradesh, the tally has crossed 14,000 while in neighbouring Manipur the COVID-19 tally stands a little over 17,000 in the same period. Presently, COVID-19 cases in Nagaland dip or rise but continue to steadily add to the overall tally. The official statistics issued by the department of health & family welfare(DoHFW) over COVID-19 cases after June had given rise to concerns that transmissions beyond the quarantine facilities have been largely under reported. The fact that transmissions beyond quarantines were showing a rise had caused apprehensions especially since many had no travel history nor contact with known source(s) of COVID19. This fulfilled the criteria for describing ‘community transmission’. The fears of community transmission was voiced out during the month of July by many organisations. However, the DoHFW chose to toe the line of the ministry of health & family welfare(MoHFW) that there was no community transmission (in India) but a stage between local transmission and community transmission. By October, COVID-19 cases in India had crossed 78 lakhs as on October 25,2020. It may be recalled that when national lockdown was imposed on March 25,2020 the total number of COVID-19 cases in India was just 564. For whatever reason, the MoHFW has been playing down or underreporting on COVID-19 cases probably to justify that the lockdown has been totally successful. That may not be debatable but the fact that the figures have been trimmed does not make sense in a country with over 130 crore people. In order to grab headlines, the MoHFW has also cited the decline in COVID19 cases from the high at around 90,000 cases per day in September to just around 60,000 per day in October. Even months before the pandemic, an IISc study by a group of noted scientists predicted that by January 1, 2021, India would have possibly reached close to 3 crore infected cases (over 60 lakh ‘active’ cases and 10 lakh fatalities). They also predicted that the pandemic is not expected to ‘peak’ before March 2021. Finally, after months of denial, Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan on October 18, had to admit that India is witnessing “community transmission”. However, by habit or requirement, he added a rider that community transmission has taken place only in districts within some states. Community transmission is not like a flood since it has already infected lakhs of people across India. The state DoHFW also admitted that transmissions were spreading but stopped short of acknowledging community transmission. The DoHFW disclosed that the positivity rate of 8.5% in the state was higher than the national average of 7.9%, while symptomatic cases have also increased to 4% and positive cases among people with comorbidities has also increased to 0.4%. With Unlock 5:0 many restrictions under Lockdown have been relaxed. This has resulted in “uncontrolled spread”of the virus in closed settings like restaurants, bakery, markets and religious community gatherings. These were dubbed as “super spreader events” where “super-spreading” , incidents of transmission where a large number of people can become infected from a common source occur. It was a clear vindication of what eminent scientists, medical specialists, epidemiologists and virologists have been saying all along since the month of May, that community transmission has already taken place in India.
DailyDevotion Submitting to God’s Purpose
I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. —1 Corinthians 9:22 A Christian worker has to learn how to be God’s man or woman of great worth and excellence in the midst of a multitude of meager and worthless things. Never protest by saying, “If only I were somewhere else!” All of God’s people are ordinary people who have been made extraordinary by the purpose He has given them. Unless we have the right purpose intellectually in our minds and lovingly in our hearts, we will very quickly be diverted from being useful to God. We are not workers for God by choice. Many people deliberately choose to be workers, but they have no purpose of God’s almighty grace or His mighty Word in them. Paul’s whole heart, mind, and soul were consumed with the great purpose of what Jesus Christ came to do, and he never lost sight of that one thing. We must continually confront ourselves with one central fact— “…Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2). “I chose you…” (John 15:16). Keep these words as a wonderful reminder in your theology. It is not that you have gotten God, but that He has gotten you. God is at work bending, breaking, molding, and doing exactly as He chooses. And why is He doing it? He is doing it for only one purpose— that He may be able to say, “This is My man, and this is My woman.” We have to be in God’s hand so that He can place others on the Rock, Jesus Christ, just as He has placed us. Never choose to be a worker, but once God has placed His call upon you, woe be to you if you “turn aside…to the right or the left…” (Deuteronomy 28:14). He will do with you what He never did before His call came to you, and He will do with you what He is not doing with other people. Let Him have His way.

Collapsing private education may cost Rs 1.75 L crore a year
Digital teaching fails. Education nobody’s baby ndia’s private school education is collapsing. Thousands of schools have closed down, many others are gasping and it may cost the nation over Rs 1.75 lakh crore a year. The lockdown has harmed the education sector immensely. Private education conjures up an image of spunky public schools with their high fee structure. These also are in crisis. Worse are the virtual budget schools, charging a fee of Rs 1,000 or less penetrating the rural, small town or low-income areas of metros, according to the State of the Sector Report on Private Schools by Central Square Foundation (CSF). There are about 15 lakh schools, with 26 crore students, according to World Edcuation News and Reviews (WENR). The recently released Household Consumption on Education in India Report, the aggregate household expenses are on private schools, about Rs 1.75 lakh crore, almost equal to the e-commerce sector. Though almost all are under stress due to lockdown the worst sufferers are virtual informal schools with a government recogni-

tion or not but serving the hinterlands of the country. It has improved school enrolment especially in rural areas, where the number of students attending private schools has increased from 4 percent in 1993 to 26.6 percent in 2017-18. The CSF report says the struggle is intense for survival of the private education. In normal circumstances, it is not easy for private schools to attract students and during covid19 times it has worsened as parents refuse to pay fees. Weak and digital footprint has made online unaffordable. So most such schools have either closed down or facing closure as they are neither able to pay their teachers nor afford infrastructure costs. Some had planned expansion in early March and taken loans. Many have gone into severe debt and even after closures are in distress. Most of these are entrepreneurial ventures by innovative individuals. In Fatehpur, UP, a shopkeeper’s son started a school at Re 1- a-day pay concept. Since the students are not coming to school, entrepreneurs like him have little option but to close down the operations. The impact on the society is severe. These em-
ploy mostly jobless youth at low salaries or payment on daily wage basis or as in Chennai on hourlypayment system. But each school sustains at least 100 persons on an average. The youth prefer to opt for such jobs for sustenance as well as the prestige they enjoy in the neighbourhood. In villages or semi-urban areas such schools have become the choice for parents, as they are perceived to be better than government schools, may not be in pedagogy but in overall care that a child is given. Teachers trained or not, since from the neighbourhood, are considered Shivaji de[emdable. This is making education more mass based as the official system has many limitations and despite some recent efforts suffers from delivery problems. Recruitment of teachers itself is flawed as the disclosures from VYAPAM in Madhya Pradesh or recent disclosures by UP government has shown. The UP government also found that the district officials interfere in Basic Shiksha schools and issued orders for severing these from the district administration. The orders stated that no district official
should intervene in any such schools. But online education has come up largely as cropper in all such schools. The pandemic has given a sudden rise to the need of having a digital infrastructure and due to their low budgets, the unaided private schools claim that they are neither able to match up with elite schools nor with the state-run schools for which the content is aired through televisions, radio, and other government-run platforms. Parents do not consider it to be education. They do not pay to the schools beSarkar cause their wa r d s a r e not going there. Apart they find online – mostly mobile phones – teaching expensive for the high internet costs. Another problem they face is that each child should have a smart phone, which they cannot afford. Many children too do not find online interesting as it interrupts too often and teachers find themselves limited for lack of eye contact. Students mostly put off video because of the poor network across the country as also to reduce unaffordable data use. Digital, which
the telecom companies are trying to promote for a revenue model, is collapsing the education system. At kindergarten and primary level it is burdening the parents, mostly mothers, as they have to remain present continuously during online classes that in many cases have become the norm in metro cities. The parents complain that children do not consider “laptop teaching” as education and pester them to allow them to go to schools. Another aspect that has not been taken into account that home education has become cumbersome, more expensive and uninteresting as in many families a child at home is a resource for family work or business. The pandemic panic is mostly being taken as holiday and the society is complaining of apathy of the schools. The students and their parents find being physically at school more affordable and at least fruitful because apart from the books they learn etiquette, interaction with peer groups, use of library and social behaviour, even if they quarrel or fight there. So the society despite the low incomes does not mind paying for education and that is heavy. As per
MoSPI report Indians are paying 12 times the money for pre-primary education at a private school. The number decreases to about three times at higher secondary level. The majority, 70.8 percent students pay less than Rs 1000 monthly fee, while 45.5 percent pay less than Rs 500. The monthly median fee an in an elementary unaided school is Rs 958 in urban areas and Rs 500 in rural India. Schools complain that at least one-third of the parents default in paying that also. The New Education Policy has also ignored the basic aspect of survival of private education, elementary to higher. The idea that greedy capitalists use it to shore up their bottom line is impractical. They have to survive on low fee and also pamper the policemen, government officials, panchayat pradhans and sundry others. Many in the business even in national capital are keen on exiting. The shutdown of private schools can adversely impact ‘education for all’ and multiply unemployment. With apathy, low government allocation and highhandedness education is becoming nobody’s baby.
Post-mortem The future of healthcare Message from the virus investment in India T
he ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has proved to be a testing time for all sections of the economy, including the healthcare sector. The latter is at the epicenter of this unprecedented global crisis and the virus has highlighted the lack of readiness to fight against and overcome new viruses. The current state of this sector and the scope of improvements have been highlighted by domain experts periodically. According to the 2019 data of the National Health Profile, there are only 7,13,986 government hospital beds for a population of approximately 137 crore people, which amount to 0.5 beds per 1,000 people. Even if beds from private, general, specialized hospitals and rehabilitation centres are considered, the number goes up to 0.7 beds per 1,000 people. India has one doctor for 1,457 people, which is far lower than the World Health Organization norm of 1:1000. This sector is facing an acute crisis in terms of a shortage of relevant healthcare infrastructure, especially in rural and sub-urban areas. The Indian healthcare sector is one of the largest sectors in terms of revenue and employment generation. It includes hospitals, medical devices, health insurance, telemedicine, clinical trials, medical tourism, and medical equipment. Growing cases of lifestyle diseases, the demand for affordable healthcare, technological advancements, and penetration of health insurance are some of the key growth drivers for this sector. Key insights from the government’s Invest India portal regarding the healthcare sector are: The healthcare market size is expected to reach $372Bn by 2022. The hospital industry is 80 per cent of the total healthcare market, growing at a CAGR of 16-17 per cent and is set to reach $132 Bn by 2023. The diagnostics industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 20.4 per cent and is set to reach $32 Bn by 2022. There is a 370 per cent increase in health expenditure from 2000 to 2014. The government has allowed 100 per cent FDI for all greenfield projects under the automatic route. Emerging trends are telemedicine, artificial intelligence, mobile and wearable devices, and robotic surgeries. According to the last budget of the government (FY 2020-21), $9.87 Bn has been allocated to the health sector which includes $915.72 Mn for the PMJAY health scheme. About 8,059 private and 7,980 public hospitals are covered under this scheme and they have been providing treatment to eligible patients under the Ayush programme. The Centre is also planning to increase its healthcare spending to 3 per cent of GDP by 2022. The healthcare sector is witnessing an expansion by existing hospitals in terms of new services through technology platforms, the use of next-generation tools for diagnosis, tie-ups with insurance companies, geographical expansion, and a focus on pharma.
The sector is also attracting fresh investment by domestic and international investors to fund expansions by existing large hospital chains as well as for greenfield projects. Foreign investors are taking a keen interest to participate in this investment opportunity to develop hospital chains, diagnostic labs, and medical equipment. According to the department of industrial policy and promotion (DIPP), the hospital and diagnostics sector has attracted FDI of $6.8 Bn from April 2000 to June 2020. The following points highlight why the healthcare sector will continue to attract investment: Health insurance penetration – The past few years have witnessed an increased awareness of health insurance products and has seen the launch of affordable products in the market. The Indian government has also launched the world’s largest government-funded healthcare programme. These developments are likely to enhance the affordability of medical expenses. Hospitals and related infrastructure – The huge shortfall in terms of the number of required beds coupled with the availability of advanced diagnosis equipment is creating a tremendous demand for large hospital chains, speciality centres and other facilities to create the related infrastructure to cater to the growing demand. Online consultation to manage the shortfall of medical professionals – Online technology platforms facilitating consultation to remotely located patients is in high demand especially in the scenario where the availability of medical professionals is limited. The Indian Telemedicine market is expected to grow at a 20 per cent CAGR to reach $32 Mn by 2020. Medical Tourism – The Indian healthcare sector is also attracting a lot of foreign patients due to quality medical services available at urban centres at a lower cost compared to the developed world. The continuous flow of foreign patients will contribute to the development of the overall economy of this sector. Opportunities in tier-2 and 3 cities – Increase in per capita income over the last decade across geographies has increased the spending power for quality healthcare. Unlike Tier -1 cities, where availability and utilization of health infrastructure is high, Tier-2 and 3 cities are providing a huge opportunity to set up the entire infrastructure. Many large chains of hospitals have already started expanding in small cities by creating small centres and partnering with local reputed doctors. With these latest developments and changes in the priority of the government, the healthcare sector as an investment opportunity is promising and getting bigger each day and is likely to benefit all the participants. he Covid-19 crisis has highlighted, around the world, the need for national resilience in the immediate context of the pandemic. Equally, it draws attention to humanity’s global interdependence that is critical both to shortterm security in areas like health and medicine and to long-term prosperity through trade that supports employment. Indeed, the crisis has brought home, in John Donne’s resonant meditation composed four hundred years ago, that “no man is an island”. A virus that likely leapt from a bat to a pangolin to a single human just a few months back, rapidly took wing across the world, causing unprecedented loss of lives, and the toll continues to mount. This pandemic is a harsh reminder of humanity’s collective vulnerability, especially in an age of seamless global interconnectivity. This is a wake-up call that we’re reaching the limits of what the planet can sustain. Going forward, business and commerce cannot be viewed in isolation, divorced from nature or the physical environment. For instance, the behavioural shift towards WFH and reduced business travel needs to be made lasting, also on account of its beneficial effects on the environment. A common enemy can be a powerful galvanising and unifying force. There has never been a comparable struggle in human memory that has united the whole world against a singular adversary. Covid-19 has underscored the need for us to collectively prepare for future events, from disease outbreaks to climate change, that could take an even greater humanitarian and economic toll if left unaddressed. The imperative for collaborative multilateral responses and initiatives must be embraced and institutions upgraded or created to facilitate such collective action. The pandemic has brought into focus the need for quality healthcare for all, as well as for rapid and coordinated measures to contain infectious outbreaks. It has re-emphasised
the importance of the WHO and of cooperation among national disease control agencies. Global safety nets – health and economic – are essential. The value of timely, publicly available information and robust protocols has become increasingly clear. As the world confronts Covid-19, a major problem that emerged is the shortage of key pieces of equipment, including masks, test kits, and ventilators. At a national level, this situation has highlighted the need to build strategic reserves of equipment, medicines, and other essential items. A nation’s collective health security is as important as geopolitical security. Business and social infrastructure and transactions are moving to the cloud, at a scale and speed not seen before. The pandemic has exposed the compelling need for the development of robust infrastructure and improved logistics. These will enhance the overall productive capacity of the economy and its global competitiveness. There is also a need to develop innovative financing solutions, placing emphasis on collaboration and shared responsibilities across public, private and non-governmental organisations. The risks of single source supply chains have now become painfully evident. In order to emerge stronger from this crisis, supply chain resilience and
agile business models will be imperative. A silver lining for India is the opportunity that the diversification of global supply chains presents for enhancing levels of inward investment and employment generation. The unfolding crisis has also triggered introspection and debate around the theme of global versus local – and about the dialectics of self-reliance versus global interdependence. These need not be perceived or pursued as the false dichotomies they seem to suggest at first glance: this is not a zero-sum game. Regional supply chains can enhance the resilience and competitiveness of global supply chains. The journey towards ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ can be traversed harmoniously alongside the goal of creating manufacturing capacity that makes India more competitive, enabling greater integration with global supply chains. Such an approach will have significant positive knock-on effects on job creation and economic prosperity. In the closing lines of that poem, Donne says “send not to know for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee.” Indeed, we are all in this together, all countries, all peoples, the haves and the have-nots. The message that this virus has conveyed to us is that our individual security and welfare are fundamentally and indissolubly dependent on our collective welfare and security globally. Arun Kumar
Reader’s Post
Sir,
Become wiser people
The pandemic has created a lot of changes not only in terms of following the SOPs as laid down by the government, but it has also invaded family social outings and way of life. While it is good to stay at home and be safe, it is also very disappointing that many festivities had to be observed according to protocols. This Puja season has come and is going without any merriment in the state and elsewhere. Children have been denied of not only attending school but also participating in various social festivities. The pandemic has truly been teaching us all a lesson to keep everything down to a minimum and return back to simple living. Let us all become wiser people and nation. Light a lamp for soldiers guarding our borders: PM India should be bigger than China in the smallest of tasks. The prime minister said on Patel’s birth anniversary, he will attend many events to be held in and around the historic Statue of Unity in Kevadiya, Gujarat. Modi also remembered former prime minister Indira Gandhi, whose death anniversary is on October 31. He wished people on Dussehra and said that with various festivals coming up, they need to show patience and follow health guidelines in celebrating these auspicious occasions during the COVID times. “Today, all of you are carrying on with immense patience, celebrating the festival with restraint… and hence, in our ongoing fight, our victory too is assured,” Modi said. He asked people to keep the ‘vocal for local’ resolve in their mind and give priority to local products while shopping for festivals. The world is taking note of India’s products, he said, citing the example of rising popularity of Khadi. Modi talked about Khadi being popularised in
Narendra Modi Mexico’s Oaxaca by a person named Mark Brown, who has made it a brand there. Highlighting the growing popularity of Khadi, he said Khadi masks had become popular during COVID-19 times and that on Gandhi Jayanti, the Khadi store in Connaught Place here had witnessed purchases of over Rs one crore in just a day. In his 30-minute address, the PM also hailed the contribution of soldiers and their service to the nation. “We must also think of our braveheart soldiers who are firmly stationed on our borders in the line of duty, even during these festive times… all in the service and security of Mother India,” Modi said.
“We have to light a ‘diya’ (lamp) at home in honour of these brave sons and daughters of Mother India. I would also like to assure our brave soldiers that despite they being away at the borders, the entire country is with them, wishing well for them,” he said. The prime minister hailed the sacrifice of those families, whose sons and daughters are at the border. Modi’s remarks come amid a border row with China in eastern Ladakh. Both sides held a series of diplomatic and military talks to resolve the row that began on May 5, following a violent clash in eastern Ladakh. However, no breakthrough has been achieved to end the standoff. In his address, the prime minister also talked about indigenous sports and pointed to the growing popularity of Mallakhambh in countries like the US, Germany, Poland and Malaysia. Mallakhambh is a traditional sport in which a gymnast performs aerial yoga postures and wrestling grips in concert with a
PM ‘decided’ date of war with China, Pak: UP BJP prez later released the video. In his address, Singh compared Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party workers with “terrorists”. When asked about the remarks, local BJP MP Ravindra Kushwaha said the leader made them to boost the morale of party workers. But the reported comment
appears to deviate from India’s stated stand. On Sunday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reiterated that India wanted an end to the border tension with China while asserting that it will not allow “even an inch” of land to be taken away by anyone. “Amazing,” Shashi

BALLIA (UP), OCT 25 (PTI): In a controversial remark, BJP’s Uttar Pradesh chief Swatantra Dev Singh said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has “decided” when the country would be at war with Pakistan and China. His remarks on Friday came amid tension at the Line of Actual Control between India and China, where the two countries have massed troops over recent months. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor reacted Sunday by taking a dig at the prime minister for “planning a war” against an enemy which he said Modi has refused even to name. The UP Bharatiya Janata Party leader linked his war-with-China claim to the beginning of construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya following a Supreme Court judgment, and the abrogation of special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Constitution. “Like the decisions on Ram Mandir and Article 370, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided when there would be war with Pakistan and China,” he is heard saying in a video clip on social media. “Sambandhit tithi tai hai,” Swatantra Dev Singh said in Hindi, claiming that a decision has been taken even on the date. Singh was speaking at an event at the home of BJP MLA Sanjay Yadav, who

vertical stationary or hanging wooden pole, cane, or rope. During the radio broadcast, Modi spoke with a person named Pon Mariyappan from Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu and lauded his initiative of converting a small portion of his hair cutting salon into a library. The prime minister hailed several initiatives of people running mobile libraries in states like UP and Arunachal Pradesh. Talking about the upcoming birth anniversary of Sardar Patel, Modi said one will come across few people whose personality has so many elements -depth of thoughts, moral courage, political genius, in depth knowledge of the field of agriculture and spirit of commitment to national unity. “He (Patel) worked for the integration of the Princely States with our nation. He was invoking the mantra of ‘unity in diversity’ in the mind of every Indian,” the PM said. Modi also hailed the efforts of his holiness Adi Shankaracharya and the Bhakti movement for promoting unity.
power and scope: RSS chief Bhagwat
NAGPUR, OCT 25 (PTI): Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday said India needs to be more powerful than China in terms of military preparedness, adding the world is aware of that country’s expansionist designs. Speaking at the Sangh’s annual Vijayadashami rally, which this time was limited to an indoor event attended by 50 ‘swayamsevaks’ due to COVID-19 guidelines, Bhagwat said India needs to be militarily better prepared against China. Many countries are now standing up to China, he said. Claiming that China was shocked at India’s response to its intrusion, Bhagwat said, “Our defence forces, government and people responded sharply to China’s efforts to encroach on our territories.” “We dont know how it will react. So the way forward is to be alert and prepared. We should be more powerful than China in terms of military preparedness, economic conditions, international relations and also relations with neigh-

The gover nment should forge an alliance against China with immediate neighbours like Nepal, Sri Lanka and others, he said. “India needs to grow bigger in power and scope than China,” he added. “China encroached on our borders amid the pandemic,” he said, adding the world knows the expansionist nature of that country. He cited Taiwan and Vietnam as examples of the Chinese expansionist designs. “ We i n t e n d t o b e friendly with all. This is our nature. But mistaking our benevolence for weakness and attempts to disintegrate or weaken us by sheer brute force is unacceptable. Our detractors must know this

The truth is China has taken our land and GOI & RSS have allowed it.” Bhagwat said India is a Hindu Rashtra and Hindutva is the essence the country’s selfhood. “When the RSS says Hindustan is a Hindu Rashtra, it does not have any political or power-centred concept in its mind,” Bhagwat said. He said the term Hindutva has been distorted by appending a ritualistic connotation to it. The Sangh believes the term is applicable to all 1.3 billion people in the country who call themselves the sons and daughters of Bharatvarsh...and who are proud of the heritage of their ancestors, he said. On the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), Bhagwat said it is not against any particular religious community, but “some people misled our Muslim brothers” claiming it was aimed at restricting their population.

In his monthly ‘Mann ki Baat’ radio broadcast, Modi also made a strong pitch for unity in the country while remembering Sardar Patel whose birth anniversary will be marked later this month on October 31. “Unity is power, unity is strength, unity is progress, unity is empowerment, united we will scale new heights,” the prime minister said. “There have also been forces which continuously try to sow the seeds of suspicion in our minds, and try to divide the country. India wants end to border tension with China: Rajnath Nitish Kumar will be behind bars
NEW DELHI, OCT 25 (PTI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said India wants an end to the border tension with China in eastern Ladakh, but at the same time asserted that Indian soldiers will never allow even an inch of the country to be taken away by anyone. The defence minister made the remarks after performing “Shastra Puja” -- the customary worship of weapons -- at the Suknabased headquarters of the Indian Army’s 33 Corps in Darjeeling district of West Bengal on the occasion of Dussehra. The defence minister was scheduled to perform the puja at Sherathang, a high-altitude border area near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China in Sikkim, but could not go there due to inclement weather, officials said. “India wants an end to the ongoing border tension with China and restoration of peace. This is our objective. But at times, some nefarious incidents keep happening. I am very confident that our soldiers will never allow even an inch of our land to be taken away by anyone,” Singh said after performing the “puja”.
Defence Minister Rajath Singh performs ‘Shastra Puja’ on the occasion of Dussehra festival, at the Sukna Army Camp in Darjeeling. (PTI) Chief of Army Staff Gen. MM Naravane and several senior officers of the Army were present on the occasion when the defence minister performed the “puja” at the key military base, which is responsible for guarding the LAC in the Sikkim sector. After performing the puja, Singh inaugurated a new road in Sikkim through a videoconference from Sukna. “I can say with confidence and on the basis of concrete information that the courage and deeds of Indian soldiers during whatever has happened at the India-China border in Ladakh recently will be writ-
ten in golden letters by the historians,” the minister said without elaborating. Twenty Indian soldiers laid down their lives while valiantly fighting a group of Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh on June 15, an incident that had significantly escalated the border tension between the two countries. China is yet to disclose the number of its soldiers killed and injured in the clash, though it has officially admitted to have suffered casualties. According to Indian officials, China suffered “heavy casualties” in the incident. Indian troops also oc-
cupied a number of strategic heights in the Mukhpari, Rezang La and Magar hill areas around the southern bank of the Pangong lake in eastern Ladakh, after the Chinese military attempted to intimidate them in the area on the intervening night of August 29 and 30. Both sides held a series of diplomatic and military talks to resolve the row that began on May 5, following a violent clash in eastern Ladakh. However, no breakthrough has been achieved to end the standoff. The defence minister’s “Shastra Puja” at the strategically important military base was a message to In-
dia’s adversaries, a military official said. Singh has been performing “Shastra Puja” during Dussehra for the last several years, including during his tenure as the Union home minister in the previous NDA government. Almost all formations of the Indian Army along the LAC are on a very high level of alert in view of the border row with China in eastern Ladakh. The defence minister arrived at the Sukna-based headquarters of the 33 Corps on Saturday. In an address to a group of soldiers at the base on Saturday evening, Singh said India always tried to maintain good relations with its neighbours, but situations arose from time to time when its armed forces had to make supreme sacrifices to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country. The defence minister also reviewed the combat preparedness of the Army during a high-level meeting at the military base. The Army has significantly bolstered deployment of troops and weaponry along the nearly 3,500-kmlong LAC, including in the Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh sectors.
if voted to power: Chirag Paswan
PATNA, OCT 25 (AGENCIES): Chirag Paswan, while addressing an election rally on Sunday, claimed Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will be behind bars if the LJP comes to power. National president of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), Chirag Paswan has refused to field candidates against one part of the NDA alliance in Bihar while opposing the other. The son of former union minister late Ram Vilas Paswan, Chirag Paswan has been vocal in his opposition to JD(U) and its tallest leader, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Without explaining how since the BJP is fighting the Bihar elections allied with the JD(U), Chirag has claimed that there will be a BJP-LJP government in Bihar once the dust settles. He made the sweeping remarks during an election rally in Dumraon in Bihar’s Buxar on Sunday. “That chief minister who is corrupt, anti-youth, destroys Bihar, forces youth to get away [from Bihar]. Should such a chief minister stay chief minister? Such a chief minister should be changed or not?” Chirag Paswan
Chirag Paswan and Nitish Kumar. (File) asked during his speech. Referring to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s 2015 poll plank where he made seven commitments to the people of Bihar, Chirag Paswan asked, “What should we do about those who have done corruption in saat nischay? Sent to jail? Sure?” He went on to add, “Chirag Paswan promises to you today. I have written this in my manifesto that in saat nischay, whatever corruption has been done. Whether by any official or the chief minister, a probe will be launched once LJP’s government comes into power and those [found guilty] will be sent to jail.” LJP national president Chirag Paswan’s remarks come on the same day as
RJD leader and mahagathbandhan’s chief ministerial candidate Tejashwi Yadav told reporters that the people of Bihar have now developed “hatred” towards Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Chirag also alleged that the illicit liquor is being widely sold in Bihar despite the ban and that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is “receiving kickbacks”. He has now issued a call for a “Nitish-free government” in the state of Bihar. In a tweet on Hindi, Chirag Paswan said, “I request you to please vote for LJP candidates to implement #Bihar1stBihari1st. Everywhere else vote for BJP. The coming government will be a #Nitish-free government.”

Prez Trump understands the power of Indian American: campaign official
Pakistan could be next polio-free country: WHO
PHILADELPHIA, OCT 25 (PTI): Indian Americans have become a force to reckon with in the US and President Donald Trump understands their power, said the president’s re-election campaign official Saturday. “You, the powerful Indian Americans are a force to reckon with today. You have not realized your own power, but President Trump understands your power,” Al Mason, co-chair of the Trump Victory Indian American Finance Committee said at an event organised by the Indian Voices for Trump. Indian Americans, particularly in the battleground states, can play an important role in getting Trump re-elected, he said, adding his recent survey in these battleground states reveal that the community members are moving towards the president in a big way. For the first time in the
stan’s National Directorate of Security intelligence service claimed on Twitter to have killed him in Ghazni province. Al-Qaida did not immediately acknowledge al-Rauf ’s reported death. The FBI, the U.S. military and NATO did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Afghan raid happened last week in Kunsaf, a village in Ghazni province’s Andar district some 150 kilometers (90 miles) southwest of Kabul, two government officials said. Amanullah Kamrani,

history of presidential elections, more than 50 percent of Indian American Democrats are moving towards the Republican party because of Trump, he said, adding the vote of the community will contribute to the victory of the president. Explaining the reasons, Mason, based on a survey, said Trump has respected the community and Indian leadership in a way no other president has done in the past. “Trump has elevated India’s stature on the world stage -- the India-US relationship has been rock solid.
Kudos to the brilliance of both President Trump and Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi for cementing the bond between India and US,” he said in his remarks at the event. In 2019, Mason explained, when the world was against Modi on the Kashmir issue and world leaders were criticising him on this issue, the only man “who had the guts to stand” by him was Trump. “The president went to the Howdy Modi event in Houston (last year) and never once injected himself into Kashmiri issue ... never once interfered into the internal affairs of India…. Kashmir is a very sensitive emotional topic for every Indian American,” Mason said. During his India trip early this year, Trump said America loves India, America respects India and America will always be faithful and loyal friend to Indians.
ISLAMABAD, OCT 25 (IANS): A top official of the World Health Organization (WHO) has said that Pakistan could be the next polio-free country, after years of continued efforts to eradicate the crippling disease. The remarks were made by the WHO’s Country Representative Palitha Mahipala at an event on Saturday to mark World Polio Day, reports Dawn news. Mahipala said that the polio eradication programme and partners have affirmed they will remain undeterred in Pakistan. “Due to enormous challenges such as misconceptions about vaccines and the Covid-19 lockdowns, the efforts against polio have been affected. “The polio programme, with its partners, has now been able to ramp-up activities which are vitalised resolve to end polio in Pakistan, as recently done by Africa,” he said.

Deeply value friendship with India: Biden WASHINGTON, OCT 25 (PTI): Slamming President Donald Trump for his comment on India’s air pollution, former vice president and Democratic Party’s presidential nominee Joe Biden on Saturday said he and his running mate Kamala Harris deeply value America’s partnership with India. “ P r e s i d e n t Tr u m p called India ‘filthy’. It’s not how you talk about friends and it’s not how you solve global challenges like climate change,” Biden said in a tweet, two days after Trump during a presidential debate accused China, India and Russia of not taking
care of their “filthy” air. “Look at China, how filthy it is. Look at Russia. Look at India. The air is filthy,” Trump had said during the final presidential debate with Biden in Nashville, Tennessee on Thursday. “Kamala Harris and I deeply value our partnership and will put respect back at the centre of our foreign policy,” Biden said in a tweet Saturday as he retweeted his op-ed in the latest issue of ethnic India West weekly. “The Obama-Biden years were some of the best we’ve ever had between our two countries. President, I will continue what I have long called for: The US and India will stand together against terrorism in all its forms and work together to promote a region of peace and stability where neither China nor any other country threatens its neighbours,” he said. “We’ll open markets and grow the middle class in both the United States and India, and confront other international challenges together, like climate change, global health, transnational terrorism and nuclear proliferation,” said Biden.

On Friday, Sudan became the third Arab nation after the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain to normalise relations with Israel in the past three months. US President Donald Trump made the announcement at the White House with Netanyahu and Sudan’s Sovereignty Council chairman Abdel Fattah alBurhan and Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok on the phone with him. Sudan, which is recovering from civil unrest and the civil war before that which led to South Sudan seceding from it, will be the fifth Arab country to have normal relations with Israel. The normalising of Israeli ties by the three countries this year ends 26 years of stalemate since Jordan reconnected with it in 1994. Egypt normalised ties with Israel in 1979.

His only son, Jae-yong, is widely expected to take over the rein of Samsung Group, but he has been embroiled in a high-profile succession scandal. Lee was indicted on charges of accounting fraud and stock price manipulation for the merger of the group’s two units to facilitate his succession from his father. The senior Lee holds a 4.18 percent stake in Samsung Electronics and a 20.76 percent in Samsung Life, and interests in numerous affiliates, with his assets estimated at up to 20 trillion won. The sheer assets held by the senior Lee means that his heirs may pay hefty inheritance tax, estimated at over 10 trillion won. Lee is survived by his wife, Hong Ra-hee, and only son, Jae-yong, and two daughters, Boo-jin and Seohyun. Jae-yong currently serves as vice chairman of Samsung Electronics, while Boo-jin leads Samsung’s hotel arm, Hotel Shilla Co., and Seo-hyun is in charge of Samsung Welfare Foundation.

Benjamin Netanyahu
TEL AVIV, OCT 25 (IANS): Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the recent normalisation deal between his country and Sudan under the auspices of the US, saying the move was a “result of a clear policy”. Addressing the media on Saturday evening, Netanyahu said an Israeli delegation will visit Sudan later this week to finalize the agreement, reports Xinhua news agency. “This is a major change. Israel was completely isolated and is now connecting to the entire world,” the Prime Minister said. “This is a result of a clear policy, not luck or coincidence,” he added. Netanyahu further said that “we are changing the map of the Middle East”, adding that more countries are expected to sign similar agreements with Israel in the near future.
SEOUL, OCT 25 (IANS): Lee Kun-hee, who had transformed Samsung Group into one of the world’s major tech giants from a small trading firm, died at a hospital in Seoul on Sunday at age 78, leaving a thorny succession challenge for his children. The chairman of the flagship Samsung Electronics had been bedridden since May 2014 following a heart attack. “Chairman Lee passed away on October 25 with his family, including Vice Chairman Jay Y. Lee, by his side. Chairman Lee was a true visionary who transformed Samsung into the world-leading innovator and industrial powerhouse from a local business,” Samsung said in a statement. Lee officially inherited the Samsung crown in 1987 at the age of 45 when his father Lee Byung-chull, founder of the present day Samsung Group, died. In 1993, Lee Kun-hee announced his first trademark business philosophy, the “New Management Initiative,” which has been embraced by Samsung like a doctrine to date. The most famous line from that philosophy, which took shape through nearly three months of meetings

That deal saw the Taliban agree “not to cooperate with groups or individuals threatening the security of the United States and its allies,” which includes al-Qaida. Federal prosecutors in the southern district of New York filed a warrant for al-Rauf ’s arrest in December 2018, accusing him of providing support to a foreign terrorist organization and being part of a conspiracy to kill U.S. citizens. The FBI put him on the bureau’s “Most Wanted Terrorists” list, which now includes 27 others. The red-headed alRauf, believed to be born in 1958, is an Egyptian national. An al-Qaida-issued biography said he joined the mujahedeen fighters who battled the Soviet Union in 1986. He has served for years as al-Qaida’s media chief, offering audio statements and written articles backing the militant group. After years of remaining silent following the acknowledgement of Taliban founder Mullah Omar’s death, al-Rauf re-emerged in 2018 in an audio statement in which he mocked President Donald Trump and those who preceded him the White House.

KABUL, OCT 25 (AP): Afghanistan claimed Sunday it killed a top al-Qaida propagandist on an FBI most-wanted list during an operation in the country’s east, showing the militant group’s continued presence there as US forces work to withdraw from America’s longest-running war amid continued bloodshed there. The reported death of Husam Abd al-Rauf, also known by the nom de guerre Abu Muhsin al-Masri, follows weeks of violence including an Islamic Stateclaimed suicide bombing Saturday at an education center near Kabul that killed 24 people. Meanwhile, the Afghan government continues to fight Taliban militants even as peace talks in Qatar between the two sides take place for the first time. The violence and alRauf ’s reported killing threatens the face-to-face peace talks and risks plunging this nation beset by decades of war into further instability. It also complicates America’s efforts to withdraw, 19 years after it led an invasion targeting the Taliban for hosting alQaida leader Osama bin Laden after the Sept. 11 attacks. Details over the raid that led to al-Rauf ’s alleged death remained murky, hours after Afghani-

Stokes, Sanju star to give Mumbai Indians a ‘Royal’ hiding; CSK knocked out
Abu Dhabi, Oct 25 (PTI): Ben Stokes’ spectacular hundred overshadowed Hardik Pandya’s six-hitting spree as Rajasthan Royals spiced up the IPL play-offs race with an emphatic eight-wicket win over Mumbai Indians here on Sunday. Stokes, who plundered 14 fours and three sixes in his unbeaten 60-ball 107, found an able ally in Sanju Samson (54 not out off 31) as their unbroken 152-run partnership allowed Royals to make short work of the 196-run target. They cantered to victory in 18.2 overs. Mumbai had put up an imposing 195 for five courtesy a 21-ball 60 Hardik Pandya, who smashed seven sixes and two fours. It was the fourth loss for Mumbai , who remain in comfortable position at the top of the standings. The comprehensive win over defending champions not only kept Royals alive in the tournament, it also eliminated Chennai Super Kings from the competition. The night belonged to Stokes, who tore into the Mumbai attack after RR lost opener Robin Uthappa (13) and Steve Smith (11) early. But Rajasthan pulled things back by dismissing Kishan, Surya and Kieron Pollard (6) in quick succession as Mumbai slipped to 101 for four. Kishan perished courtesy a one-handed blinder from Archer at third-man, off Tyagi, and then Gopal removed Surya and Pollard in the 13th over. Young Ruturaj Gaikwad (65 not out off 51 balls) showed his potential with a maiden fifty but skipper Dhoni wouldn’t be wrong in thinking that it came too late in the day when the ‘Yellow Brigade’ is all but out of the play-off reckoning. Gaikwad and veteran Ambati Rayudu (39 off 27 balls) added 67 runs in 8.2 overs for the second wicket to finish off a chase in style although it might have been too little too late. However, with CSK’s m a x i mu m a c h i eva b l e points tally set to be 12, a victory for KKR in their next game against Kings XI Punjab on Monday, will officially end the campaign for Dhoni’s brigade. KKR are currently on 12 points while Mumbai Indians (before Sunday evening game), Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore are all on 14 points. On Sunday, CSK looked purposeful in their pursuit of a small target. Gaikwad, one of the most talked-about young players in this league, finally had a good day in office, hitting four fours and three sixes. He looked assured while choosing the loose deliveries as he swept Yuzvendra Chahal for a boundary and came down
the track to loft Moeen Ali for a six. Fittingly, a hooked six by Gaikwad brought CSK’s much-awaited win. Rayudu, at the other end, used Navdeep Saini’s pace, as he slashed him over backward point for a six and then again showed intent by charging down the track for a boundary. Earlier, the celebrated pair of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers were briefly entertaining but Chennai Super Kings managed to restrict Royal Challengers Bangalore to 145 for 6 in their stipulated 20 overs. Sam Curran was once again brilliant up-front and also at the death, finishing with figures of 3/19 in three overs. Credit to the CSK bowlers as they conceded only 20 runs in the last three overs and managed to take four wickets. IPL’s most prolific batting pair of Kohli and De Villiers added 82 runs with some great technique against CSK spinners Imran Tahir (1/30 in 4 overs) and Mitchell Santner (1/23 in 4 overs) who kept a tight leash during the middle overs. Deepak Chahar was once again steady, finishing with 2 for 31 in his four-over spell. Kohli scored 50 off
43 balls with a four and a six while De Villiers helped himself to a polished 39 off 36 balls. De Villiers hit four boundaries. The CSK bowlers did well enough to take the pace off the ball which made it difficult for RCB batsmen to score. Yet, Kohli and De Villiers did manage to take control of the proceedings but failed to finish with a flourish. However, whenever Tahir flighted the ball, his country-mate De Villiers was quick to reach to the pitch of the deliveries to drive elegantly through the covers. Kohli had one bowler’s backdrive off Tahir and for a good measure lifted Ravindra Jadeja for a straight maximum which was his 200th six. Kohli’s off-side play was another lesson for all youngsters as he would just adjust his wrists at the last moment to hit those insideout shots off the spinners. With ball stopping and coming off the surface, Kohli never looked out of control during his third half-century of the season. It took a tremendous diving catch at long-ff from Faf du Plessis off Sam Curran to dismiss Kohli as RCB fell short of 150-run mark.
Khabib Nurmagomedov calls Pujara, Hanuma, to join team Kapil Dev discharged from time on undefeated MMA career in UAE ahead of Aus tour hospital after angioplasty
On Saturday, Nurmagomedov defeated Justin Gaethje with a second-round triangle choke submission to claim a 29th win and unify the 155lb title.
NEW DELHI, OCT 25 (IANS): Khabib Nurmagomedov has drawn curtains on his mixed martial arts career after retaining his lightweight title at UFC 254 in Abu Dhabi. On Saturday, Nurmagomedov defeated Justin Gaethje with a secondround triangle choke submission to claim a 29th win and unify the 155lb title. Following his victory, the 32-year-old said he had
honoured the memory of his father, coach and mentor Abdulmanap, who died in July following complications arising from Covid19. “It was my last fight. There’s no way I’m going to come here without my father,” BBC Sport quoted him as saying after the bout. “It was the first time after what happened with my father, when the UFC
called me about (fighting) Justin, I talked with my mother for three days. She didn’t want me to fight without father, but I promised her it was going to be my last fight, and if I give my word, I have to follow this. It was my last fight here,” he added. Many believed that Nurmagomedov would chase his 30th professional win before contemplating retirement. But following the win, he asked his teammates to cut his gloves off before quitting at the Octagon. Re c e n t l y, I n d i a ’s MMA star Ritu Phogat had stated that she is hugely motivated by Nurmagomedov. “I have been very motivated by him and I watch a lot of his videos. I like his fighting style a lot and I am inspired by him. I aspire to be like him some day,” Phogat said ahead of her fight against Cambodian MMA sensation Nou Srey Pov at ONE: INSIDE THE MATRIX on October 30 in Singapore.
NEW DELHI, OCT 25 (PTI): With the Indian team support staff for company, Test specialists Cheteshwar Pujara and Hanuma Vihari are leaving for Dubai on Sunday to join rest of the squad members for the tour of Australia. H e a d c o a c h R av i Shastri is expected to join the others on Monday, according to a report in ESPNCricinfo. Apart from Pujara and Vihari, batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar will be travelling alongside the duo before the tour of Australia. On reaching UAE, the group will have to follow the the same standard operating procedures put in place by the BCCI for the IPL, including a six-day quarantine in Dubai and COVID-19 tests at regular intervals. However, the group won’t be a part of the IPL bio-bubble and will be staying separately.
Sydney and Canberra are set to host the whiteball leg of India’s tour of Australia after the New South Wales government allowed the visiting team to train during its mandatory quarantine upon arrival. India are scheduled to play three T20s, three ODIs and four Tests in Australia. The squads for the tour are yet to be announced by the Indian selectors. “It is understood that the selectors did not want to finalise the squads without a final approval from the BCCI to the CA schedule,” the report stated. “ T h e s e l e c t o r s, though, are understood to have already had informal discussions and are expected to meet early next week to finalise the three squads,” it added. Pujara and Vihari are the only two first-choice Test specialists who are not participating in the ongoing Indian Premier League in UAE. The duo will join the rest of the Indian players selected to travel to Australia.
NEW DELHI, OCT 25 (IANS): India’s first World Cup-winning cricket captain Kapil Dev was on Sunday discharged from the hospital after undergoing a successful angioplasty. He was admitted to the Fortis Escorts Heart Institute in South Delhi after suffering a cardiac arrest last Thursday, following which he had undergone angioplasty surgery as a treatment. Angioplasty is a procedure to restore blood flow through the artery. “Mr. Kapil Dev got discharged today afternoon. He’s doing fine and can resume his regular daily activity soon. He’ll be under regular follow-up consultation with Dr. Atul Mathur,” a statement from the hospital read. He was admitted to the hospital at around 1 am on Friday, and Dr Atul Mathur, Director of Cardiology Department successfully performed an emergency coronary angioplasty. record for most Test wickets (434) for over six years until it was broken by Courtney Walsh of the West Indies. The other big achievement of Kapil was to lead India to World Cup triumph in 1983, when the team was considered minnows in limited-overs cricket. EPL: Southampton ends Everton’s unbeaten record Mizoram leads gender equality with Baby Leagues
Southampton have taken 10 points from their past four games.
SOUTHAMPTON, OCT 25 (AGENCIES): The last remaining unbeaten record of the Premier League season was ended as leaders Everton crashed to defeat against an impressive Southampton at St Mary’s, reports BBC Sports. James Ward-Prowse beat Jordan Pickford with a ferocious finish before Che Adams doubled the lead with the help of a deflec-
tion, Danny Ings involved in both goals. Everton went into the game having taken 13 points from their first five games but missed injured captain Seamus Coleman. Stand-in skipper Gylfi Sigurdsson struck the bar from 20 yards when the game was goalless, but the visitors struggled to seriously test keeper Alex McCarthy and finished the
game with 10 men. Full-back Lucas Digne was shown a straight red card after a nasty challenge on Kyle Walker-Peters, the second successive game in which Everton have had a player sent off after Richarlison’s dismissal in last week’s Merseyside derby. Everton have won many plaudits for the start they have made to the season but Carlo Ancelotti’s
side were very much second best against Saints. Without the influential Coleman, Ben Godfrey started as a makeshift right-back but struggled on his first league start for the club. He was not alone during a lethargic team performance, Sigurdsson lasting less than an hour wearing the captain’s armband before he was replaced. Pickford, who came in for intense criticism following his challenge on Virgil van Dijk in last week’s Merseyside derby, was almost embarrassed late in the game by Ings after a back-pass by Yerry Mina. Substitute Bernard added some much needed energy to the midfield when he replaced Alex Iwobi at the start of the second half. But Everton failed to force McCarthy into one serious save, Dominic Calvert-Lewin managing just two touches in Southampton’s penalty area as he struggled for service.
New Delhi, Oct 25 (IANS): Amidst all the debates over gender equality, a remote village of Mizoram, Champhai -- some handshaking distance away from the Indo-Myanmar border -- is silently taking a firm stride forward towards establishing gender equality through Golden Baby Leagues. The Golden Baby Leagues project is a long-term player development initiative of All India Football Federation (AIFF) that aims to grow a new generation of players, boys, and girls, who start playing football from a very young age. “We started the Golden Baby Leagues with mixed-gender matches and it had a magical response from parents in the locality. At the end of the season, you won’t believe, the highest scorer was an 8-year-old girl,” Prakhar Soni said as per an AIFF media release. The Young Legends League Golden Baby Leagues, the brainchild of 8one Foundation, was one of the first Baby League programs across the country. Over the last two years, they had unearthed some talented kids who were, in the process, roped in by the likes of Bengaluru FC, Reliance Foundation Young Champs, Bhaichung Bhutia

Football Schools. “Champhai has produced national level players like Robert Lalthlamuana, Lalruatthara and many more. That’s one of the main reasons why we zeroed down on this district. Mizoram’s grassroots football structure has been exceptionally robust. The District Football Association of Champhai has provided us with their database so we could kick-off the YLL Golden Baby Leagues program,” Soni stated. The foundation has also signed a 10year-long MoU with Mizoram state football association in order to kick-
off the project which provided them with the opportunity to flag off the same in Champhai. The matches are organised on Saturday so that the academic curriculum of the kids is not affected. “Creating a footballer is not our solitary target. We have always stressed on the holistic development of the kids as well as others who are part of the entire project. We appoint senior boys or girls as referees so they can hone their decisionmaking as well as technical skills,” Soni said.
