land issue: ANCSU tells CM

DIMAPUR, OCT 29 (NPN): All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) has appealed to chief minister Neiphiu Rio to set up a high powered commission (HPC) to look into the longpending land issue of Kohima Science College, Jotsoma (KSCJ) and include all stakeholders of the college as its members. In a memorandum to the chief minister, union’s president Vimeyiekho Vitso and general secretary Imnameren N Jamir called for setting up the HPC within one month and that it should submit its report for necessary action within two months from the date of its formation. Insisting that the commission should formulate policies, provisions and action plan on how to settle the land issue once and for all, they demanded that the State government must implement the HPC’s recommendation within one month from the date of submission of its submission. The memorandum reminded Rio of the State government’s

assurance of August 14, 2018 to solve the KSCJ’s land issue and acknowledged the land survey carried out in this regard. On receipt of the land survey report, ANCSU said it made several appeals for settlement of the land issue, but regretted that the government did not bother to listen to them. It recalled having submitted letter to chief minister’s office on November 20, 2019 and another letter to chief secretary on February 21, 2020, appealing for a joint meeting with all stakeholders, but did not receive any response till date. According to ANCSU, KSCJ is a premier college of the State and attracts both national and international academic minds. However, it regretted that the unattended land issue of the college has hindered its growth. The union hoped that Rio would not disregard the issue and commit to bringing in permanent settlement to the land issue for the welfare of student community.

DAYO condemns forced closure of transport agency

DIMAPUR, OCT 29 (NPN): Condemning the alleged forced closure of East India Transport Agency run by two Sumi sisters at Golaghat Road here by anti-social elements on October 19, Dimapur Ao Youth Organisation (DAYO) has appealed to all civil society organisations (CSOs) not only to condemn such crimes but also try and check them, report to government agencies and control growth of such evil practices that hampered the growth and well being of “our society”. DAYO said it was high time that everyone unite and fight the syndicate system that was stalling economic growth and creating fear psychosis in the minds of entrepreneurs and public. Pointing out that the two Naga lady entrepreneurs were forced to close their shutters due to non-compliance of syndicate’s dictates and notices, DAYO termed this as “very alarming” and had come at a time when citizens of the State, especially Dimapur, are voicing their support for peace and trying to attract investors from outside, besides promoting local entrepreneurs who are trying to start business for self sufficiency and economic independence. DAYO said such anti-social elements were a menace and the biggest hindrance to build Dimapur into a better city and demanded that the government take this matter seriously and bring the culprits to book and punish them by putting behind bars forever. “It is the duty of the government to protect citizens and provide a welfare State where everyone can live in peace and harmony,” the release stressed.

Public health response to COVID-19: Campaign for covid–appropriate behavior

T

he latest MHA guidelines cast additional responsibilities on States as they have been authorized to permit reopening of schools and social/ cultural gatherings and also to issue detailed SOPs. On the need for concerted action across the States and the urgent need to instil a sense of discipline and ownership amongst citizens for successful unlocking it is vital that some points are emphasized with perseverance which are highlighted here below. Primarily, in view of the forthcoming festive seasons and impending onset of winter, it is likely to impose significant challenges, as well as the speculated K Y M C

increase and rise in the number of COVID positive cases in the State. In this regard precaution is better than cure and COVID- appropriate behaviour will ensure effective prevention, which mainly entails The 3C’s & 3Ws: Avoid Crowded places, Closed contact settings and Confined or enclosed spaces, Wear masks, Watch distance and Wash Hands. Scrupulous adherence to SOPs in respect of Respiratory Hygiene and Environmental Sanitation will be vital. COVID Appropriate Behaviours: 1. Greet without physical contact 2. Maintain 2 meters/ 6 feet physical distance

3. Wear washable mask at all times 4. Avoid touching eyes, nose & mouth if your hands are unclean 5. Use a tissue or handkerchief or your bend elbows while you cough or sneeze. 6. Wash hands with soap & water frequently. 7. Do not chew tobacco, khaini etc or spit in public places. 8. Regularly clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces. 9. Travel only if urgent or unavoidable. Take all precautions during travel. 10. Do not discriminate against anyone. 11. Discourage crowd. Encourage safety. 12. Do not circulate

social Media posts which carry unverified or negative information 13. Seek information on Covid-19 from credible sources. 14. Seek professional counselor for stress or anxiety. 15. Helpline – 1800345-0019, National toll free :1075. Early testing and treatment has become the need of the hour to prevent morbidity. Late treatment of COVID positive cases leads to complications and residual damage such as lung fibrosis especially amongst younger patients and patients without co-morbid conditions. Therefore, reinforcement of strict adherence

to testing is very crucial and should be imposed attentively as well as Special emphasis on care for senior citizens, elderly and children. Discrimination is another factor that contributes to the rise of alarming cases. Also because of fear of stigma many cases are concealed without testing and increase in resistant testing which lead to transmission of cases /uncontrollable situation. Negative impact of Stigma and Discrimination: 1. It leads to resistance or low number of testing which results in late treatment for positive cases that determines complication/ dead.

2. Problems faced in contact tracing due to incorrect/invalid personal information given by the patient. 3. Localized containment (sealing of houses) which is another preventive measure of transmission has also become an issue of social discrimination. 4. Creates unnecessary psychosis and false information that prevents timely intervention to protect against COVID. It is crucial to be optimist, support and encourage each other without Stigma and discrimination. Miking in all levels from village to State level should be encouraged as much as possible. Accompanied by senior civil and police officials, Singh reviewed the law and order situation in the wake of a bomb blast in a school located at Khulicherra area close to the Assam-Mizoram inter state border on October 22, said a government release. Singh said the explosion at the school was possibly the handiwork of miscreants out to terrorise the local people. Gauhati High Court not legally entitled to be included in the NRC,” the order said. The affidavit will not be confined to Nalbari district only, but contain details of all other districts across the state as well, the Bench said in its October 19 order which was uploaded recently. “An issue of great importance is noticed in the present case. It is not a solitary instance, inasmuch as, in a number of cases we have noticed and recorded similar issues appearing,” it added. The Bench noted that

the name of the petitioner appeared in the NRC even when proceedings against her had been initiated and continued on the basis of reference made by the Nalbari superintendent of police (border). “Such insertion of name is against the law ... As indicated above, this is not an isolated case,” it added. Rahima Begam was declared a foreigner by the Foreigners’ Tribunal No. 3 of Nalbari district on November 8 2019 and she had filed a writ petition

in Gauhati High Court on August 14 this year challenging it. The final NRC list was released on August 31, 2019 by excluding the names of 19,06,657 persons. A total of 3,11,21,004 names were included out of 3,30,27,661 applicants. As per the rules of the NRC, names of persons belonging to the categories of declared foreigners, ‘D’ (doubtful) voters and against whom cases are pending in Foreigners’ Tribunals cannot be included in the historical document as well as with their descendants. On October 13, the NRC state coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma wrote to all the deputy commissioners and the district registrars of citizen registration (DRCR) directing them to issue “speaking orders” for deletion of “ineligible” names from the final NRC as many of them and their descendants were included in the list. Though the letter did not mention how many

Meghalaya CM woos voters in by-poll bound Manipur Correspondent IMPHAL, Oct 29: NPP national president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma who kickstarted his party’s campaign for November 7 by-poll in Manipur on Thursday claimed that his party is the only common political platform for the Northeast people. Almost all national and state level party leaders took part in the flag hoisting ceremony cum election rally of the only NPP candidate Khuraijam Loken who is in the fray from Wangoi Assembly constituency of Imphal West district. Loken is in a triangular fight with state agriculture minister O Lukhoi of BJP and Salam Joy of Congress in this constituency where BJP leaders were concentrating to win the seat. The NPP national president arrived here to blow the by-poll bugle of the party candidates today along with his cabinet minister James Sangma and NPP national general secretary Thomas Sangma. All the four MLAs of the NPP in the state including deputy chief minister Y Joykumar and party state unit president N Kayisii were among state leaders of the party who attended the party rally. Addressing the rally, the national president claimed that NPP is the

people’s names will be excluded, sources close to the development claimed that around 10,000 people have been identified whose names were “wrongly included” in the final NRC and will now be excluded. Though the final NRC list was made public last year, it has not been notified by the Registrar General of India yet. This leaves the historic and controversial document without any official validity. After the publication of the final NRC, almost all stakeholders and political parties had criticised it as a faulty document alleging exclusion of indigenous people and inclusion of illegal migrants. On August 31 2020, state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary told the Assembly that the Assam government had submitted an affidavit in Supreme Court for reverification of 20 per cent names in districts bordering Bangladesh and 10 per cent in the rest.

only national level political party that originated from the region. “NPP is the right party of the Northeast people. NPP is the voice of the people of the region. NPP is the only party that will serve the people of the region wholeheartedly,” he said. Sangma alleged that BJP O Lukhoi was not a worthy people’s leader. If he happened to possess the quality of being a people’s leader, he should have thought of the people first, he said. If he happened to be the true leader of the people, he has no reason to abandon his assembly membership at this juncture where people were put at the limit of their woes (due to the COVID-19 pandemic), he said. Sangma then urged voters of the constituency to choose a leader they trust who will never betray them. He confidently expressed that the NPP candidate will register a thumping victory in the constituency. By-polls to four Assembly constituencies spread over three districts will be held on November 7. The NPP is fielding only one candidate who will be locked in a battle with BJP and Congress. Including the lone NPP candidate, 11 candidates –four Congress, three BJP and three independents- are in the fray.

She was 95. “She passed away at 11.30 pm on Wednesday night after a long illness, but she died peacefully at her residence in Domiasiat village,” Spelity’s daughter, Smerela Lyngdoh Langrin, said. Spelity has been suffering from various age-related diseases, but has not been able to get much of medical attention due to the nonexistence of a health centre in the village. “Yesterday, we visited the Primary Health Centre at Wahkaji and requested a doctor to come and examine my ailing mother-in-law. Tripura reports 273 COVID cases, 1 more death Agartala, Oct 29 (PTI): At least 273 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Tripura on Thursday, pushing the tally in the state to 30,566, a health department official said. The death toll rose to 342 after one more patient succumbed to the infection, he said. West Tripura district, of which state capital Agartala is a part, has accounted for 178 of the 342 COVID19 deaths, the official said. On Wednesday, 170 people were discharged from G B Pant Hospital, the main referral facility in the state for COVID-19 patients, he said. Tripura currently has 1,699 active coronavirus cases, while 28,502 people have recovered from the disease and 23 migrated to other states, the official said. ill-health,” Norman Donald Syiem, the Secretary of Domiasiat village and Spelity’s son-in-law, informed. “The doctor told us that he won’t be able to specify the disease that my mother-in-law was suffering from without undergoing a thorough diagnosis,” Syiem said. Wahkaji is around 34 kilometres from Domiasiat and the villagers are yet to see an all-weather road. Spelity, the matriarch of Domiasiat became a household name when she rejected a lucrative offer from the UCIL to sell her land after the Atomic Minerals Directorate had undertaken exploratory drilling for uranium deposits in 1993. “It was in 2002 when UCIL officials came to meet my mother-in-law and offered her Rs, 45 crore to sell off her land for mining of the uranium. However, my motherin-law outrightly rejected the lucrative offer due to the frequent deaths of children and strange illness of villagers following the exploratory

mining,” Syiem recounts. “Money cannot buy me freedom,” Spelity had said to eventually motivate locals against the “environmental ills” of uranium mining.Meghalaya is the third uranium-rich state in the country after Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh. It has an estimated 9.22 million tonnes of uranium ore deposits. In 2016, the Meghalaya government revoked its agreement to lease a land measuring 422 hectares in South West Khasi Hills to the UCIL. A year later, UCIL also decided to temporarily close down its establishments in Meghalaya since the government-owned mining company did not receive mining lease and statutory permission from the state government. Moreover, the Atomic Mineral Directorate stopped its exploratory drilling in South West Khasi Hills district after its officials were attacked and machines used for taking sub surface samples were also set on fire.

Will even back BJP to defeat SP: Mayawati

Suspends seven of her party’s MLAs for anti-party activities NEW DELHI, OCT 29 (PTI): BSP chief Mayawati on Thursday suspended seven of her party’s MLAs, who had opposed the nomination of its official candidate Ramji Gautam for the elections to the Rajya Sabha, for anti-party activities. Amid speculation that the MLAs could switch sides in Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati also said to ensure the defeat of Samajwadi Party candidates in future MLC elections, her party will even vote for BJP or any other party’s nominee. The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said as soon as the rebel MLAs join any party, the BSP would take action against them under the anti-defection law. She also said the party organisation has been informed that the suspended legislators should not be invited to any BSP function. Those suspended are Chaudhary Aslam Ali, Hakim Lal Bind, Mohammad Mujtaba Siddiqui, Aslam Raini, Sushma Patel, Hargovind Bhargava and Bandana Singh, according to a party statement. She said the suspended lawmakers would not be fielded by the BSP in any future election. People from the castes and religion of the suspended MLAs would be fielded against them. BSP would continue to nurture people

Mayawati from the castes, communities and religions the suspended MLAs represented, Mayawati said. “Their communities would not be punished for their deeds.” Mayawati said her party would leave no stone unturned to defeat SP candidates in the future even if it meant voting for candidates of the BJP or any other party. Any candidate who dominates over the Samajwadi Party’s second candidate will get BSP MLAs’ vote, she said in a statement. In a jolt to the BSP on Wednesday, six party MLAs reportedly met Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and later threw hints that they may switch sides. Four of the group of rebels also filed an affidavit, saying their signatures on the party candidate Gautam’s nomination for the Rajya Sabha polls had been “forged”. The move turned out to be futile with the Returning Officer still accepting Gautam’s nomination as the Bahujan Samaj Party candidate for the November 9 biennial elections for the

10 Uttar Pradesh seats that are falling vacant. Mayawati claimed that when the Samajwadi Party fielded its senior leader Ram Gopal Yadav, BSP general secretary Satish Misra tried to contact SP chief Akhilesh Yadav over phone but failed. He later contacted Ram Gopal Yadav who said the SP would not field another candidate. By ignoring Misra’s attempts to contact Akhilesh Yadav, the SP has not only insulted the BSP leader but the entire Brahmin community of Uttar Pradesh, she said. The BSP chief also said she was of the view that in case Akhilesh Yadav fields his wife Dimple Yadav, then the BSP should not field a candidate. But the SP betrayed BSP by fielding an Independent, she said. Mayawati said that dropping the 1995 guest house case against the Samajwadi Party and having an alliance with it in the Lok Sabha polls was a “big mistake”. The decision was taken in a haste, she said, adding had the party thought about the issues in-depth, the mistake would not have been committed. She alleged that in June 1995 an attempt was made on her life, but it failed. As soon as the alliance was decided, SP leadership was pressing for the withdrawal of the case, Mayawati said, claiming, “The SP once again betrayed the BSP, which his (Akhilesh’s) father (Mulayam Singh Yadav) had been doing all along.”

Military talks with China have no link with ‘any extraneous issue’: India

Aarogya Setu issue: IT Ministry to take action

NEW DELHI, OCT 29 (IANS): The Centre has issued an ordinance, making pollution an offence with a jail term, which can go up to 5 years and a penalty up to Rs 1 crore. The ordinance, was issued on Wednesday night after the approval of the President. According to the ordinance, a Commission for Air Quality Management will be set up for the National Capital Region (NCR) and adjoining areas in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. “Any non-compliance of this Ordinance, rules made there under or any other order or direction issued by the Commission shall be an offence punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend up to five years or with fine which may extend up to one crore rupees or with both”, said the ordinance. The chairman of the Commission will be selected by a committee headed by minister for environment and forest and it will also comprise ministers for transport and commerce, science and technology as well as Cabinet secretary, as members. The 18-member Commission will be headed by a full-time chairperson who has been a secretary to the government of India or Chief Secretary of a state. Out of the 18 members, 10 will be bureaucrats while others are experts and activists. The commission will be a central body for all purposes.

NEW DELHI, OCT 29 (PTI): India on Thursday said its military talks with China on the border row have no connection with “any extraneous issue”, comments that came in the backdrop of recently concluded Indo-US 2+2 dialogue during which the two countries discussed Beijing’s military belligerence in eastern Ladakh and Indo-Pacific region, and inked a strategic defence pact. About the next round of corps commander-level talks with China, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said the two sides have agreed to maintain dialogue through military and diplomatic channels, and arrive at a mutually acceptable solution for disengagement as early as possible. “Let me make it clear that there is no connection between this and any extraneous issue,” he said at a media briefing while replying to questions on the Sino-India boundary row, and whether China has delayed the next round of military talks due to signing of the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (BECA) between India and the US during their 2+2 dialogue. On Tuesday, India and the US inked the BECA that provides for sharing of highend military technology, classified satellite data and critical information. “As regards the recent 2+2, ...the external affairs minister had stated that the

Indo-Pacific region was a particular focus of our talks. We reiterated the importance of peace, stability and prosperity for all countries in this region,” Srivastava said. “This is possible only by upholding the rules-based international order, ensuring the freedom of navigation in the international seas, promoting open connectivity and respecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all states,” he said. China’s military belligerence in eastern Ladakh and Indo-Pacific region figured during the 2+2 strategic dialogue with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo strongly affirming that it stands firmly with New Delhi in its efforts to defend sovereignty. In its reaction, China urged Pompeo to stop sowing discord between Beijing and other countries in the region. In his briefing, Srivastava also referred to the last round of military dialogue between Indian and Chinese armies on 12 October, saying it enabled in-depth discussions between the two sides resulting in enhanced understanding of each other’s positions. “The two sides had agreed to maintain dialogue through military and diplomatic channels, and arrive at a mutually acceptable solution for disengagement as early as possible,” he said. The MEA Spokesperson said the two sides agreed to implement the understandings reached by the leaders of the two countries

NEW DELHI, OCT 29 (PTI): The Ministry of Electronics and IT has taken a serious view on lapses made in providing information about Aarogya Setu app, and issued directions to initiate suitable action against concerned officers, government sources said. The ministry is committed to furnish all the information sought under the Right to Information (RTI) Act to the applicant, and comply with the directions of Central Information Commission (CIC), the sources added. CIC had pulled up National Informatics Centre (NIC) for providing an “evasive reply” on Aarogya Setu app, and had issued show cause notice on the issue. Following this, the IT Ministry, in a statement on Wednesday evening, clarified that the NIC in collaboration with volunteers from industry and academia developed the Aarogya Setu app in the “most transparent manner”, and there should be no doubt about the app and its role in helping contain COVID-19 pandemic in India. Meanwhile, the sources told PTI that the ministry has taken the lapses made in providing information on Aarogya Setu app very seriously, and has issued directions to initiate suitable action against the officers responsible for the same. The ministry has also directed NIC and National E-Governance Division (NeGD) to take suitable action against the officers dealing with the RTI query in their organisations, the sources added.

in not to turn differences into disputes, and jointly safeguard peace and tranquility in the border areas. “Accordingly we have maintained communications with the Chinese side with a view to arrive at a mutually acceptable solution to the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh and restore full peace and tranquility,” he said. The two sides have so far held seven rounds of high-level military talks on the border row. However, there has been no breakthrough on the disengagement of troops from the friction points so far. India has been maintaining that the onus is on China to carry forward the process of disengagement and de-escalation at the friction points in the mountainous region. Following the sixth round of military talks, the two sides announced a slew of decisions including not to send more troops to the frontline, refrain from unilaterally changing the situation on the ground and avoid taking any actions that may further complicate matters. The sixth round of talks took place with a specific agenda of exploring ways to implement a five-point agreement reached between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi at a meeting in Moscow on September 10 on the sidelines of a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation(SCO) conclave.

AHMEDABAD, OCT 29 (PTI): Former Gujarat chief minister Keshubhai Patel died here on Thursday after prolonged illness, family sources said. Patel (92) was the state chief minister in 1995 and again during 1998-2001. Narendra Modi had succeeded him as Gujarat chief minister. Patel was a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly six times. He quit the BJP in 2012 and floated the Gujarat Parivartan Party, which performed poorly in 2012 Assembly polls and merged with the BJP in 2014. Born in Visavadar town of Junagadh district in 1928, Patel joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1945 as a pracharak. He started his political career as a worker for the Jan Sangh. KOLKATA, OCT 29 (PTI): The ruling Trinamool Congress Thursday hit out sharply at West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar for his alleged “partisan” approach calling him “a disgrace to the Raj Bhavan” and accusing him of acting like a loudspeaker” of BJP. Dhankhar, who is presently in New Delhi and met Union Home Minister Amit Shah this afternoon, has criticised the worsening law and order situation in the state while speaking to newsmen there later. He also questioned the role of senior IAS and IPS officers of West Bengal. TMC secretary General, Partha Chatterjee, who is also the state parliamentary affairs minister, accused Dhankhar of trying to tarnish the image of the state and acting as a spokesperson of BJP. Dhankhar and the Mamata Banerjee’s TMC government have been at loggerheads ever since he assumed office over a year ago and the governor has often expressed concern over the law and order situation in the state. The governor should look at the lawless situation in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh before pointing fingers at West Bengal. He is working as the BJP spokesperson to politically help the saffron camp,” he told reporters here. Echoing him, party colleague and MP, Kalyan Banerjee accused the governor of being the loudspeaker of BJP and “a disgrace to the Raj Bhawan”. The Governor of West Bengal @jdhankhar1 is a loudspeaker of BJP. Did he go to meet the Home Minister, or did he go to meet his BJP leaders? He has done it around 99 times, so this must be chapter 100. Once again, he went to Delhi with his garbage of lies,” he tweeted.

COVID lexicon

o doubt that the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is the authority over medical health and related issues all over India while it is another matter that it chooses to follow government guidelines over the present COVID-19 pandemic. The ICMR is funded by the Government of India through the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The governing body of the council is presided over by the Union Health Minister. For state governments, whatever ICMR says is sacrosanct. The ICMR has chosen to follow government interests rather than health interests by following the path of dependence. The ICMR has fumbled with the crucial issue of the stage of COVID-19 transmission in India as well as COVID-19 cases. First, the ICMR according to the report in The Telegraph as carried by The Print, on September 21, placed COVID-19 figure at around 86,000 on May 15 whereas the ICMR’s own sero survey report had placed the figure to around 60 lakhs. According to the portal, the ICMR had under reported COVID cases. Next on the issue of transmission, on March 28, the Health Ministry acknowledged that there was “limited community transmission” of the novel coronavirus in India. On April 9, the ICMR and Health Ministry researchers - some of them are national task force members for COVID-19 - in a journal paper, provided evidence suggesting the prevalence of community transmission in 36 districts across 15 States. The health ministry’s own admission that there was “limited community transmission”, a newly created phase between Stages 2 and 3, was again retracted. After admitting that “community transmission” has taken place in some states ICMR soon retracted it. The cat was out of the bag, when a guidance document released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare inadvertently gave out India’s best kept Covid-19 secret- that as early as April, community transmission had happened in India. The health ministry’s own admission that there was “limited community transmission”, a newly created phase between Stages 2 and 3, was again retracted. Finally, after months of denial, Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan on October 18, had to admit that India is witnessing “community transmission”. It was clear vindication of what eminent scientists, medical specialists, epidemiologists and virologists have been saying all along since the month of May, that community transmission has already taken place in India. However, by habit or requirement, the minister added a rider that community transmission has taken place only in districts within some states. Close on the heels of the missteps by ICMR and MoHFW, the state’s DoHFW also explained that transmissions were spreading but stopped short of acknowledging community transmission. Rather the DoHFW opined that this because many restrictions under Lockdown have been relaxed. It said this had resulted in “uncontrolled spread” of the virus in closed settings like restaurants, bakery, markets and religious community gatherings. These were dubbed as “super spreader events.” The DoHFW has coined a phrase “community spread” which, by WHO’s definition, is neither local transmission nor community transmission. The ground reality is that since July, many cases were not from quarantines and had no travel history nor contact with COVID-19 infected. However, the state H&FW department is satisfied to coin it as “community spread”; a lexicon which, perhaps WHO could consider worth researching along with COVID-19.

DailyDevotion Substitution

He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. —2 Corinthians 5:21 The modern view of the death of Jesus is that He died for our sins out of sympathy for us. Yet the New Testament view is that He took our sin on Himself not because of sympathy, but because of His identification with us. He was “made…to be sin….” Our sins are removed because of the death of Jesus, and the only explanation for His death is His obedience to His Father, not His sympathy for us. We are acceptable to God not because we have obeyed, nor because we have promised to give up things, but because of the death of Christ, and for no other reason. We say that Jesus Christ came to reveal the fatherhood and the lovingkindness of God, but the New Testament says that He came to take “away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). And the revealing of the fatherhood of God is only to those to whom Jesus has been introduced as Savior. In speaking to the world, Jesus Christ never referred to Himself as One who revealed the Father, but He spoke instead of being a stumbling block (see John 15:22-24). John 14:9, where Jesus said, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father,” was spoken to His disciples. That Christ died for me, and therefore I am completely free from penalty, is never taught in the New Testament. What is taught in the New Testament is that “He died for all” (2 Corinthians 5:15)— not, “He died my death”— and that through identification with His death I can be freed from sin, and have His very righteousness imparted as a gift to me. The substitution which is taught in the New Testament is twofold— “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” The teaching is not Christ for me unless I am determined to have Christ formed in me (see Galatians 4:19).

Violence against women in India: ‘Her experiences of pain’

(“No nation can ever be worthy of its existence that cannot take its women along with the men. No struggle can ever succeed without women participating side by side with men. There are two powers in the world: One is the sword and the other is the pen. There is a great competition and rivalry between the two. There is a third power stronger than both that of the women.”--Muhammad Ali Jinnah)

C

enturies have come and centuries have gone but the plight of women is not likely to change. Time has helplessly watched women suffering in the form of discrimination, oppression, exploitation, degradation, aggression, humiliation, crimes against women are a social menace and a costly public health problem. It can take the form of threats, verbal abuse, battering rape and murder. Violence against women is simply not a women’s rights issue but a human rights issue. Many women victims of domestic violence live in fear of pain and death. They tend to blame themselves for what is happening and they try to explain away the bruises and broken bones. It might not be easy to identify domestic violence at first while some relationships are clearly abusive from the outset; abuse often starts slowly and gets worst over time. Therefore, violence may be defined in various ways. Simply stated, violence is words and abusive, that hurt people. Their actions are often justified by existing norms, values, belief system, culture and social structure of societies. The World Health Organisation (WHO, 2002) defines violence as: The intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, that either results in or

I

has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment or deprivation. Some of the instances where women have experienced crime against them in India: 1. The Hathras Rape Case: A recent brutal attack on a 19 year old Dalit woman was tortured and allegedly gang raped by four upper caste men in Hathras district in North India state of Uttar Pradesh. The body was severely brutalized, her tongue was cut, limbs fractured and spinal cord damaged. The woman succumbed to her injuries in a hospital in New Delhi a fortnight. The deceased parents begged for her dead body for proper cremation but the police refused and forcefully cremated at midnight. 2. Women locked inside toilet for over a year by her husband: A woman, who was allegedly locked inside a toilet for a year by her husband in Pisphur village, was released by women protection and child marriage prohibition officer, Pajni Gupta along with her team. 3. Woman went online for Helplines: On April 18 a women went online to search for helpline for survivors of domestic violence. Her husband had always been abusive verbally, emotionally and at times even physically unable to bear the abuse and beating. She decided to seek help. She found

a Facebook page run by “Invisible Scars”, a support group and contacted them. 4. A woman gangraped by 5 policemen: A 20 year old murder accused has alleged she was raped by 5 policemen for 10 days in lock-up in May in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district. The incident came to light in October 10, after an additional district judge and a team of lawyers inspected the prison. She said a woman constable tried to stop the policemen but was reprimanded by seniors. Rape was used as a weapon during colonization and is being used increasingly as a weapon of war and in conflict situations as a political weapon of repression and torture of the weak. It is also used to exercise power and dominance. It is considered an effective method for debasing women, who are seen as men’s property and to defile purity of race by producing offspring. Rape can never be mistaken for an impulsive act of passion. It is often premeditated and meticulously planned. It is not an expression of an uncontrollable sexual urge but an act of aggression motivated by the need to express power, authority, hatred of women and a desire to humiliate them, and take revenge. Vi o l e n c e a g a i n s t women in its various forms is a violation of human rights the very nature

of which deprives women of their ability to enjoy fundamental freedoms. It is a serious obstacle to equality between women and men. Violence against women remains hidden in the culture of silence. The causes and factors of violence against women include entrenched unequal power relations between men and women the foster violence and its acceptability, aggravated by cultural and social norms, economic, dependency, poverty and alcohol consumption etc. In India, where the culprits are largely known to the victim, the social and economic cause of reporting such crimes are high. General economic dependence of their families and fear of social ostraciziation act as significant disincentives for a woman to report any kind of sexual violence or abuse. Therefore the actual incidence of violence against women in India is probably much higher than the data suggests and because of this most of the women’s experiencing violence and living its consequences. There is need to break the silence and ensure that violence against women is not just a woman’s issue but primarily a political, social, economic and cultural issue that concerns man as well. While men represent the majority of the perpetrators of violence against women, they have an important role to play in preventing and

combating violence against women. Because of their role models as fathers, husbands, brothers and sons, men and young boys should be part of the solution and thus be involved in eliminating violence against women. If men felt involved, they should help promote changes in attitudes among other men. It is not women or men working alone to end gender based violence that yields the best results. It is the partnership between them that has the greatest impact and reach. Church Response: The issue of overcoming violence involves collaborative action and work among members of societies and churches. In fact, there are religious and contextual approaches to overcome violence. These models depend on the willingness and cooperation of those involved in the process. Approaches must be holistic in nature and in essence so that they reflect God’s life-giving purpose for all creation. The church must live out the prophetic, and shepherding role in the church which includes counselling, healing, nurturing, caring, fellowship, peace and reconciliation etc. the main focus is to restore life and bring about justice. Therefore, as a church we have responsibilities or rather obligations to initiate, educate and trained them. Our church desperately needs creative, courageous action. In a spirit of prayerful discern-

ment, we must consider; what constitutes a faithful response, both individually and collectively? We must risk a first step on the journey. Trust each question enough to follow it, one step forward and then another. Only then can we forge a more authentic way of beingfemale and male, a human community together. Out of many some of the positive actions plan that could be taken in a secular country like India is as follows: 1. The church foremost responsible is she should be the agent of love, hope, peace, justice and reconciliation. 2. Train women to be released from concepts of self-sacrifice, to own power and use it responsibly. 3. Put gender on all planning and activities agendas and revise constitutions, laws, regulations and directives to be gender just. 4. Churches, NGOs and government could collaborate in addressing issues violence against women. 5. Follow up on instances of rape to ensure that legal action takes place, and the victim receives adequate support to overcome the trauma. 6. Hold seminars on marital and family life. 7. Highlights the issues in local Newspaper to build up a resistance network. Nokchunger Longchar, D. Min, DBC-PTCA

NIA raids NGOs, trusts in Kashmir, Delhi

SRINAGAR, OCT 29 (PTI): After choking the funding of separatist groups, the NIA carried out fresh raids for the second day on Thursday on some more organisations as part of its investigations into NGOs within and outside Jammu and Kashmir that are allegedly being used as modes for “terror funding”. In continuation of the searches carried out on Wednesday, seven more locations in Srinagar, Baramulla, Anantnag and Kulgam in the union territory and two locations in Delhi were raided, National Investigation Agency (NIA) spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General Sonia Narang said in a statement. She said the searches were conducted in connection with a case pertaining to certain registered and unregistered NGOs and Trusts raising funds in the name of charitable activities and then using those funds for carrying out secessionist and separatist activities in Jammu and Kashmir. The case was registered

by the NIA on receipt of “credible information” that certain NGOs and Trusts are collecting funds domestically and abroad through donations and business contributions in the name of various welfare activities such as public health and education. The NIA alleged that these funds are sent to Jammu and Kashmir through various channels such as hawala and cash couriers and are used to carry out and sustain secessionist and terrorist activities in the erstwhile state. Among those raided by the NIA on Thursday were

JK Yateem Foundation at Srinagar and Kulgam, The Salvation Movement at Srinagar run by Zafar Akbar Bhat, Human Welfare Foundation at Delhi and Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir Voice of Victims at Baramulla run by Abdul Qadeer, Falah-e-Aam Trust at Budgam run by GM Bhat and Charity Alliance at Delhi run by Zafar ul Islam, who is also former chairman of the Delhi Minorities Commission. The NIA spokesperson said several incriminating documents and electronic devices have been seized

during the searches. Reacting to the raids, Khan said his home and offices were raided by the NIA this morning from 7-11 am during which the officials took many papers, all laptops, hard disks of all desktops, cash found etc. “They showed me an order on their mobile, issued by one Yadav of NIA to conduct the raid linking me and my NGO with Kashmir terror,” he said. Khan said he had “no relationship or even contacts with Kashmiri militants and have not even visited Kashmir for many years. “It seems an attempt to implicate me in some terror or riot case,” he tweeted. He said he has been “thrown to stone age. No laptop, no mobile, no desktop. The NIA people said order for raid came from the very top and they were woken up at 4 am for this great task of raiding a journalist. They had no patience. They jumped the wall to enter my house like they did with (P C) Chidambram.” The People’s Alliance

for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) also strongly condemned the NIA raids at the offices of prominent English daily Greater Kashmir and a number of NGOs in Kashmir. Terming the raids by the NIA as part of political vendetta against the people, the PAGD cautioned the Centre that the raids were “unwarranted” and “unjustified”. “The consequent harassment is bound to deepen uncertainty and alienation of the people and urged it to desist from such vindictive measures,” the amalgam of seven mainstream parties, including the NC and PDP, said. Meanwhile, the Kashmir Editors Guild (KEG) expressed concern over the pre-dawn NIA raids on Greater Kashmir’s premises in Srinagar’s Press Enclave. “Though the NIA after a five-hour wait said the raid was on GK trust, the GK management said the investigating agency checked the computers and took away the hard drives,” the KEG said.

Violent protesters target police over Munger firing; EC removes SP, DM PATNA/MUNGER, OCT 29 (PTI): The Election Commission has removed the District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police of Munger over the violence during a Durga Puja event early this week, even as a group of protesters went on the rampage in the town on Thursday, setting some police stations and outposts on fire and ransacking the SP and the SDO offices. The poll panel Thursday also ordered an inquiry into the firing and stone-pelting during the immersion of an idol of goddess Durga late Monday night in which one person had died and several others were injured. The Election Commission has asked Magadh Divisional Commissioner Asangba Chuba Ao to complete the probe within a week. Strengthen testing, tracking, treatment Parl panel grills Google executives strategy: Centre tells Delhi, Kerala, WB NEW DELHI, OCT 29 (PTI): The Centre on Thursday advised Delhi, Kerala and West Bengal, witnessing a significant rise in coronavirus cases, to gear up the testing, tracking and treatment strategy during the festive season and put an additional thrust on public awareness as well as enforcement of COVIDappropriate behaviour. A review meeting on the status of COVID-19 infection in Delhi, West Bengal and Kerala was held by Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan in presence of V K Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog, and ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava on Thursday, according to a Health Ministry statement. West Bengal has registered 3,924 new cases in a day with average daily cases recording a 23 per cent increase over the last four weeks, it said. The state has 37,111 active cases, its case fatality rate stands at 1.84

per cent and the positivity rate at 8.3 per cent. “There is one per cent increase in positivity rate over the last four weeks. Darjeeling, Nadia, Medinipur West, Jalpaiguri, Hooghly are the top districts showing an increasing trend in cases. Also, Murshidabad, Nadia, Coochbehar, Kolkata and Darjeeling have registered an increase in weekly deaths last week. The tests per million population stand at 41,261 whereas the national average is 77,220,” the statement said. The ministry said the state authorities were advised to strictly follow the ‘test-track-treat’ strategy and not to compromise on testing, keep the level of daily tests at a higher level with a greater proportion of RT-PCR tests. “It was advised to ensure a proper standard of care and early identification as well as early hospitalisation of cases. It was also

suggested to regularly monitor symptom development and hospitalization trend amongst patients in home isolation,” it said, adding Bengal has also been told to focus on rapid contact tracing and effective isolation. COVID-19 cases in Kerala are also showing a rising trend. The state registered 98,778 cases in the last 14 days, while in a 24hour period it recorded the maximum 8,790 instances of the infection. “Thrissur, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Malappuram are the top districts showing an increasing trend in coronavirus cases. The state has demonstrated better results in terms of COVID fatality. The fatality rate stood at 0.34 per cent, although there has been an increase in weekly deaths in Thrissur (133 per cent), Kollam (75 per cent), Alappuzha (31 per cent), Ernakulam (30 per cent), and Kannur (15 per cent),” the health ministry said.

NEW DELHI, OCT 29 (PTI): A parliamentary panel on Thursday questioned “neutrality” of Google when it is engaged in both advertising and content, and asked was it not violating fundamental rights of users by “controlling” their choices. Top executives of the search engine appeared before the Joint Committee of Parliament on the Personal Data Protection Bill and responded to queries related to data security. Gitanjali Duggal, Google’s director and head of legal in India; Aman Jain, head of government affairs and public policy; and Rahul Jain, manager of public policy and government relations, deposed before the panel, headed by BJP MP

Meenakshi Lekhi. “They themselves are the platforms, sellers and news agencies. And Google itself has the control button to which information will come first, which will come later or which news will flash and which will be suppressed. So how it can be a neutral platform?” Lekhi told PTI after the meeting. Members of the panel, including Congress MP Vivek Tankha, BJP MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar and BJD MPs Bhartruhari Mahtab and Amar Patnaik, posed a number of queries to Google representatives. According to sources, some panel members asked them the search engine is “controlling the choices of your users, isn’t it violation of fundamental rights?”

NEW DELHI OCT 29 (PTI): The first phase of the Assembly elections in Bihar recorded 55.69 per cent voter turnout, the Election Commission said on Thursday. A total of 71 assembly constituencies of Bihar went to polls on Wednesday in the first of the three-phase elections amid tight security and with COVID-19 guidelines in place. As compared to corresponding assembly constituencies which went to poll in the 2015 assembly elections and the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the turnout this time was higher. In the 2015 assembly elections, the turnout was 54.94 per cent in the corresponding constituencies. In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls -- with the same assembly seats mapped to parliamentary seats -- the turnout was 53.54 per cent. “So turnout in phase one is higher than both the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections,” a spokesperson said.

Official sources said the agitators went berserk and also tried to set kotwali and Kasim bazar police stations on fire, but there they faced a strong resistance from the policemen who fired in the air to disperse the mob. The protesters burnt tyres near Rajiv Chowk in the Munger town, demanding action against the SP and the police personnel responsible for allegedly opening fire during the idol immersion procession. Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) Jitendra Kumar told PTI-Bhasha in Patna that extra police force has been sent to Munger. Kirloskar Motor launches Women street vendors felicitated in Kohima itsToyota first regional stockyard in India

Correspondent

KOHIMA, OCT 29 (NPN): Secretary (Judicial) Justice & Law, Nino Iralu said that street vendors form an integral part of urban economy by providing access to wide range of goods and services in public spaces. She was speaking as the special guest during the felicitation of women street vendors achieving 10K thrift-cum-training on digital transaction and financial literacy under PM SVANidhi organized by Entrepreneurs Associates (EA) supported by Capri Global Capital Limited at Red Cross conference hall, today. Iralu pointed out that street vendors create jobs not only for themselves but for porters, transport operators, storage providers etc. She said that street vendors generate revenue for the government by paying tax and license fee. Iralu further lauded the street vendors for keeping the city clean, safe for customers by providing them friendly personal services. Encouraging to strengthen the community, she said that street vendors provide main source of income for the household, bringing food for families, paying school fees for their children. Appraising that as per the law for every right there is a corresponding duty, Iralu urged the gathering that

the duty during COVID-19 pandemic was to maintain clean environment, wash hands regularly and wear mask in public places. She said that street vendors (protection of livelihood and regulation of street vending) Act 2014 might slowly be implemented in the state which guarantees rights, protection and facilities to street vendors. The Secretary felicitated 54 women street vendors for saving Rs.10,000 and 5 women street vendors for highest savings of 1 lakh

and above. Delivering an introduction to the program, Advisor EA, Neikule Doulo informed that training on financial literacy to women street vendors started in 2017. Stating that the goal is to reach all districts in the state, she said that the training started with 16 women street vendors has reached more than 2,000 women across 7 districts in Kohima, Phek, Mokokchung, Wokha, Dimapur, Tuensang and Peren. Doulo said that the rea-

son the training started was because a lot of women vendors after working for 10-15 years were unable to grow beyond selling vegetables by the roadside. One major finding was a lot of women did not save for the future, she said that the training gave financial empowerment to women vendors, some has saved more than Rs. 1 lakh over the past three years, while few of them bought land and some planning to buy land. Appraising that there

are three categories of people involved in street vending, Doulo said that some street vendors buy wholesale from the wholeseller, some sell only their own farm produce and some buy from other farmers and sell it in towns. Lamenting the lack of proper toilet facilities and drinking water for the street vendors, she said that travelling from interior places to the towns to sell their produce was also a difficulty observed while training in Phek and Tuensang. She therefore announced that EA will be launching a bus which will be taking only street vendors from interior parts to town, first route from Phek to Kohima and Dimapur. Since COVID-19 pandemic has affected the income of the street vendors, Doulo said that EA under the programme “pay back environmentally” has encouraged street vendors to grow saplings. She further announced that EA will organize a street vendors’ summit on April 2021 since street vendors have never been organized in such manner, where they can come together and deliberate on problem. On the session II, admin co-ordinator EA, Yutho Sangtam gave an introduction to Aadhar Micro ATM for easy transaction and working session on the usage of micro ATM.

Pak minister admits Pakistan’s France cartoon row: What you need to know role in Pulwama terrorist attack

BERLIN, OCT 29 (AGENCIES): The outcry over remarks about Islam by French President Emmanuel Macron and cartoons of Prophet Muhammad has escalated. Muslim nations are protesting with calls to boycott French products. How did it get to this? French President Emmanuel Macron has invoked the ire of Muslims worldwide after he pledged to fight “Islamist separatism” and defended the right to publish religious caricatures. The row has led to protests, boycotts and condemnations. Macron’s statement: Macron delivered a spirited defense of free speech and secular values after a French high school teacher was beheaded for displaying caricatures of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad. He vigorously defended the controversial cartoons, saying they were protected under the right to free speech. He later added that “we won’t renounce the caricatures.” Macron’s government is also planning a new bill to combat “Islamist separatism.” Macron has said that Islamists have created a parallel culture in

France that rejects French values, customs and laws. He also said that Islam is “a religion that is in crisis all over the world” and that Muslim positions are “hardening.” On Friday, the offending cartoons were projected onto government buildings in France. As part of a class on free speech, history teacher Samuel Paty showed his students some caricatures of Muhammad that had been published by the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in 2015. After community complaints about this lesson, Paty was killed and beheaded outside his school by an 18-year-old Chechen extremist. The cartoons in question have inspired many Islamist attacks, including the slaughter of 12 people at the Charlie Hebdo offices in 2015. Depictions of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad are offensive to many Muslims. It is not explicitly forbidden by the Quran, but some accounts forbid Muslims from depicting him. In France, the Charlie Hebdo cartoons have become icons of a secular tradition that dates back to the Revolution.

Islamic world reaction: Many Islamic count r i e s h ave c o n d e m n e d Macron’s defense of the cartoons and called for a boycott of French goods. Turkey has led the charge, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan saying Macron needs a “mental health check” and accusing him of running an antiIslamic agenda. “You are in a real sense fascists, you are in a real sense the links in the chain of Nazism,” he said of Europe, comparing the treatment of Muslims in Europe to the Nazi treatment of Jews. “Never give credit to French-labeled goods, don’t buy them,” Erdogan said on Monday during a televised speech. Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, has said it rejected “offensive” images of any of Islam’s prophets. Traders in Jordan, Kuwait and Qatar have removed French goods from store shelves, while Qatar University has canceled French culture week. There have also been protests held in Iraq, Syria, Libya, the Gaza Strip, and Bangladesh, the last of which attracted tens of thousands of demonstrators and

included burning effigies of Macron. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan said Macron was encouraging anti-Muslim sentiment and was deliberately provoking Muslims. Egypt’s Al-Azhar University has denounced the cartoons. The Abu Dhabi-based Muslim Council of Elders said it was planning to launch legal proceedings against Charlie Hebdo and “all those who insult Islam.” The Foreign Ministry in Iran has summoned the French charge d’affaires to strongly reject “any insult and disrespect to the prophet of Islam,” according to state media. Libya’s UNrecognized Government of National Accord has “firmly condemned” Macron’s comments and demanded an apology. There was also condemnation from the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, the Taliban in Afghanistan and the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah. Europe response: European leaders have rallied around Macron and criticized attacks on him, particularly from Turkey. In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokes-

man Steffen Seibert said: “They are defamatory comments that are completely unacceptable, particularly against the backdrop of the horrific murder of the French teacher Samuel Paty by an Islamist fanatic.” The prime ministers of Italy, the Netherlands and Greece also expressed support for France. Several EU officials have slammed Erdogan’s comments. Domestic reaction: In the aftermath of Erdogan’s comments, France on Saturday recalled its ambassador to Turkey. The French Council of the Muslim Faith said in a statement that Muslims are “not persecuted” in France. “France is a great country, Muslim citizens are not persecuted, they freely construct their mosques and they freely practice their religion,” it said. France’s largest trade association, Medef, also said it supported the French government. Association head Geoffroy Roux de Bezieux told French broadcaster BFMTV: “I call on the companies to resist the blackmail and unfortunately to endure this boycott for the time being.”

ISLAMABAD, OCT 29 (PTI): In a sensational admission, a senior Pakistani minister on Thursday admitted that Pakistan was responsible for the Pulwama terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir in 2019 that killed 40 CRPF personnel and brought the two countries to the brink of a war. “Humne Hindustan ko ghus ke maara (We hit India in their home). Our success in Pulwama, is a success of this nation under the leadership of Imran Khan. You and us are all part of that success,” Science & Technology Minister Fawad Chaudhry said in the National Assembly during a debate. Chaudhr y, a close aide of Prime Minister Imran Khan, made the remarks a day after Opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Ayaz Sadiq said that Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in an important meeting pleaded to release Indian Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who was captured by the Pakistani Army on February

27, 2019 after his MiG-21 Bison jet was shot down in a dogfight with Pakistani jets. In the early hours of February 26, 2019, the IAF jets bombed the Jaish-eMohammad (JeM) terror camps in Balakot in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa of Pakistan and avenged the Pulwama terrorist attack that claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel. “Legs were shaking and forehead perspiring, and the foreign minister (Qureshi) told us, ‘For God’s sake, let him (Varthaman) go back now because India is attacking Pakistan at 9 PM in the night’”, Sadiq said, recall-

ing the high-level meeting which was also attended by Army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, and added that “India was not planning to attack...They just wanted to kneel before India and send back Abhinandan.” Chaudhry, who was the information and broadcasting minister at the time of the Pulwama attack, criticised Sadiq’s remarks and termed them as “inappropriate”. The international community led by the US has pressed Pakistan to deny safe haven to terror groups operating from its soil and bring the perpetrators of the Pulwama attack to justice.

A landslide leaves a trail of rocks and mud in Phuoc Loc district, Quang Nam province, Vietnam Thursday (AP/PTI)

HANOI, OCT 29 (AP): Landslides set off by Typhoon Molave killed at least eight people with 42 others missing in central Vietnam, state media said Thursday. Rescuers dug up eight bodies in Tra Van village in south central Tra Van in Quang Nam province where a hillside collapsed on houses, the official Vietnam News Agency reported. In Tra Leng village, several kilometers (miles) from Tra Van, another landslide buried several houses occupied by about

45 people, including four who managed to survive. Rescuers have recovered three bodies and were scrambling to save others. The initial death toll reflect the ferocity of the typhoon, which Vietnamese officials feared may be the worst to hit the country in 20 years. The typhoon slammed central Vietnam on Wednesday with destructive force while at least three provinces were still recovering from recent deadly flooding that killed more than 100 people and destroyed hundreds of houses early this month.

calm amid “skyrocketing” infection rates. “It is the beginning of the cold season and we find ourselves in a dramatic situation”, she said. “This affects all of us without exception. Winter will be difficult; four long, difficult months. But it will end.” While dismissing those who pedal disinformation during the pandemic, Mrs Merkel was careful to reinforce the country’s commit-

ment to vigorous democratic debate. “Critical debate does not weaken democracy, it strengthens it,” she said. Mrs Merkel said she sympathised with the “frustration” many felt regarding the new rules, but reinforced their necessity to the public. “Freedom isn’t being able to do whatever you want. Freedom is taking responsibility,” Mrs Merkel said. The chancellor defended the strict measures as being “appropriate, necessary and proportionate”.

“If instead we, dear colleagues, waited until the intensive care units were full, then it would be too late.” Bars, restaurants, gyms and entertainment venues will be closed for a month from Monday, while travel and meeting in groups is set to be heavily restricted. AfD parliamentar y group leader Alexander Gauland criticised the lack of parliamentary involvement in deciding upon the measures, equating Mrs Merkel’s leadership with “a coronavirus dictatorship”.

WASHINGTON, OCT 29 (PTI): US President Donald Trump has accused both the mainstream and social media companies of blocking serious charges of corruption against his rival and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, saying the situation was causing America to experience suppression of the press. Trump said the media was not willing to write against Biden and his family. “Here is a guy who gets caught and the media doesn’t want to write about it. You know what they call it not freedom of the press but suppression of the press,” Trump said during his election allies on Wednesday in the battle ground State of Arizona. Trump was referring to the allegations of corruption

Such interjections are rare in German parliament, with house speaker Wolfgang Schäuble threatening the hecklers with calls to order and criticising their “dangerous” behaviour. Mrs Merkel called for

and you know what they have a corrupt party and all of this work being done by Big Tech and being done by the media that should be considered a major, massive billion-dollar campaign contribution because that’s what it is,” he said at a political Rally in Bullhead City of Arizona. Trump alleged that the mainstream does not want to look at the information being made available from the laptop of Hunter Biden. “It’s called the laptop from hell. This is the greatest laptop I’ve ever seen. This thing is gold. It’s gold except for the news that doesn’t want to look at it. They refuse to look at it,” he said. Tr ump alleged Joe Biden and his family received money from China, Ukraine and Russia. “The money from China, Ukraine, Russia... the wife of the mayor of Moscow gave him (USD) 3.5 million, the son. The son had no job, no nothing, got USD 3.5 million. They put him on the board of Burisma, USD 183,000 a month and I understand a USD 3 million upfront payment,” Trump claimed, alleging that China gave him USD 1.5 billion.

BERLIN, OCT 29 (AGENCIES): Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, was heckled by opposition MPs during a speech to parliament on Thursday, while taking aim at groups spreading “lies and disinformation” as the country continues to battle the coronavirus crisis. The speech, which took place the morning after Mrs Merkel announced a range of sweeping reforms to tackle the spread of the pandemic, warned that the German people find themselves in a “dramatic situation”. Is Jeff Bezos considering SEVENTEEN’s Hoshi Donates Khloe Kardashian purchase of CNN? shares she is Covid positive Scholarship To Alma Mater

R

eality TV personality Khloe Kardashian has come out and spoken about testing positive for Covid-19. She confirmed being infected by the coronavirus in a recorded clip from isolation. “Just found out that I do have corona. I have been in my room. It’s gonna be fine, but it was really bad for a couple days,” she said in the video. The news of Khloe testing positive is confirmed on an upcoming episode of the reality show “Keeping Up With The Kardashians”, reports mirror.co.uk. Reality TV star and Khole’s sister, Kim Kardashian West, shared that the entire family was waiting to know if she had contracted the virus after she showed symptoms. Khloe was vomiting, shaking and having hot and cold flashes. She also shared that she had a burning cough and was having difficulty in speaking. Kim had said: “I mean, my gut tells me she does, just because she’s so sick. That really scares me for her, ‘cause I can tell that she’s now getting scared and that she’s really nervous about it.” Their mother Kris Jenner then talked about how Khloe had called every doctor in town to get a test. Khloe’s news comes after Kim’s husband, rapper Kanye West, shared that he had the virus earlier this year. (IANS)

A

mazon CEO Jeff Bezos already owns the Washington Post and now there is some buzz in the investment banking world that he could be interested in buying one of AT&T’s top assets, Cable News Network (CNN). Although there is no official confirmation of even the start of any formal or informal talks for such a potential deal from any party, some media investment bankers feel that the sale of CNN to the world’s richest person would make sense for both the parties, FOX Business reported on Tuesday. Rich Greenfield, a partner and media and technology analyst at independent research firm LightShed Partners, earlier tweeted why purchase of CNN by

Bezos makes sense. He recently said that ViacomCBS and Comcast, the parent of NBCUniversal, could be possible buyers of CNN, besides Bezos. The FOX Business report noted that even though Bezos has not yet expressed any real interest in such a deal, speculation in the investment banking world often serves as a catalyst for deal making even before talks actually start. The speculation comes at a time when AT&T is required to reorganise its operations and shed parts of its empire following the $85 billion purchase of TimeWarner, said the report. The 2016 deal which was not completed until 2018 left AT&T with tens of billions of dollars in debt, it added. (IANS)

I

t was revealed that member of SEVENTEEN, Hoshi, made a donation to his alma mater! On October 29, a source from Maseok High School in Gyeonggi Province shared, “Hoshi donated 23.1 million won (approximately $20,370) as scholarship for the school’s students.” Hoshi’s parents delivered the donation in his stead, and they stated, “It wasn’t easy for our son to complete his education because we were not well off.

Thanks to the consideration shown by the principal and his home room teacher, he was able to graduate and achieve his dreams. Hoshi has asked for his donation to be used to help students in families that are struggling financially so that they can achieve their dreams.” Hoshi reportedly also gave signed SEVENTEEN CDs to members of the high school’s dance club as gifts. Maseok High School’s principal Kim Byung San said, “Hoshi has constantly

been donating quietly without making it public. We hope that Hoshi’s sincere donation will be made widely known and have a positive influence on the students.” Meanwhile, SEVENTEEN made a comeback recently with their special album “; [Semicolon]” and the title track “HOME;RUN.” The group received the Prime Minister’s Commendation at the 2020 Korean Popular Culture & Arts Awards. Apple iPhone 12 has ‘secret’ reverse wireless charging Letitia Wright: All-female ‘Avengers’ film will happen soon

T

he new iPhone 12 series may have a secret wireless feature to charge an external device like upcoming AirPods and the long-expected Tile-like item tracker AirTags, reports claimed on Thursday. Citing a series of US Federal Communications K Y M C

Commission (FCC) filings first spotted by VentureBeat, the report said that the iPhone 12 “supports a built-in inductive charging transmitter and receiver.” Apple has not officially announced any such functionality yet. “In addition to being able to be charged by a

desktop WPT [wireless power transfer] charger (puck), 2020 iPhone models … also support WPT charging function at 360 kHz to charge accessories,” one of the documents read. The list includes iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone

12 Pro Max. The FCC documents said that “currently the only accessory that can be charged by iPhones is an external potential apple accessory in future” and that reverse charging currently “only occurs when the phone is connected to an AC power outlet.” Apple has officially introduced MagSafe in iPhone 12 series phones, offering high-powered wireless charging and an all-new ecosystem of accessories that easily attach to iPhone. The MagSafe Charger makes wireless charging a cinch. The perfectly aligned magnets attach to your iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro and provide faster wireless charging up to 15W. The MagSafe Charger maintains compatibility with Qi charging, so it can be used to wirelessly charge your iPhone 8 or later, as well as AirPods models with a wireless charging case, as you would with any Qicertified charger. The magnetic alignment experience only applies to iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro models, according to Apple. (IANS)

ctress Letitia Wright says an all-female Avengers film will be a reality soon. The 26 year old star played Shuri in “Black Panther”, besides in two “Avengers”. Asked about the possibility of a female team-up, Wright said: “I don’t think we have to fight for it. (Producer) Victoria Alonso is very strong about spearheading it, alongside (Marvel chief) Kevin (Feige). It’s only a matter of time before they do it.” Wright also opened up about how special it was to feature in the “Black Panther” cast.

“It was always a dream of mine to play someone that can be impactful not only for black women but also just for women around the world and young people, too. To be able to have a combination of people and audience members who are so thrilled and appreciative of Shuri is a good feeling. I feel like I contributed something positive in the world,” she said in an interview to Yahoo! Entertainment, according to a contactmusic.com report. Last year, “Captain Marvel” star Brie Larson had revealed that she and her castmates approached Feige

about the possibility of an all-female superhero film. “I will say that a lot of the female cast members from Marvel walked up to Kevin and we were like, ‘We are in this together, we want to do this!’ What that means, I have no idea. You know, I’m not in charge of the future of Marvel, but it is something that we’re really passionate about and we love and I feel like if enough people out in the world talk about how much they want it, maybe it’ll happen,” Larson had said. Rijiju assures aid to Olympian MP Singh

New Delhi, Oct 29 (IANS): Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday assured a group of wellknown hockey players that Olympian Mohinder Pal Singh, who has damaged both his kidneys, would be provided assistance under a relevant scheme of the ministry, and also asked Gautam Buddha Nagar member of Parliament to further chip in to help the ailing star who lives in his constituency. Singh, 58, lives in NOIDA, which falls under Gautam Buddha Nagar constituency, from where Mahesh Sharma has been elected to Parliament. During the meeting, at which the wife of Singh was also present, Rijiju called up Noida MP Mahesh Sharma and requested him to provide urgent assistance, according to those present in the meeting. Sharma, they informed, gave a positive response. Singh, a former penalty corner specialist, has been looking for a kidney donor for about a month, and has circulated his request on social media. The retired Air India employee was admitted to Apollo Hospital in south Delhi

for dialysis, and was discharged on Tuesday. He has since returned home, but will be visiting the hospital thrice a week for dial ysis, until a kidney donor is found. “The response of the minister was positive. He said he would do all he could. Regarding finding a kidney donor also he said he would help my husband,” Shivjeet, wife of Singh, said. The other members of the delegation were well-known former India players Maharaj Krishan Kaushik, Vineet Kumar, Romeo James, and Arvind Chabbra, and former India coach Harendra Singh. Kaushik, a Dronacharya Award winner, was also hopeful that assistance would come soon. “The

minister gave a positive response to six of us who met him at his residence. He said he would do whatever was possible as per the rules of the sports ministry. He also suggested that the local member of Parliament could also help, and he called Mr Mahesh Sharma during the meeting itself and requested him to help Mohinder Pal. We are confident that assistance would come,” the 1980 Olympic gold medallist told IANS. Harendra concurred with Kaushik. “The minister told us that he had already instructed his people about MP Singh’s case, and apparently his file is already moving. I am satisfied with the outcome of the

meeting. MP Singh’s wife, Shivjeet, was also present and she said that they don’t have any one in the family who could donate a kidney to her husband and requested the minister to help in finding a donor as well,” said the Dronacharya Award winner. “When the ministry heard this, he said that he would talk to a hospital - he did not say which one -- to help in finding a donor for MP Singh,” said Harendra. Under Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons (PDUNWFS), the ministry provides assistance “to outstanding sportspersons of yesteryear, living in indigent circumstances, who had brought glory to the country in sports”. Up to Rs.10 lakh can be granted as assistance for medical treatment under this scheme. Singh, who attended St. Mary’s School in Meerut, captained India at the Junior World Cup in Kuala Lumpur in 1982 and the same year he played his first international. He went on to play in the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games and the 1986 World Cup in London.

Indian football in right direction: Adil Khan

NEW DELHI, OCT 29 (PTI): National team defender Adil Khan feels Indian football is headed in the right direction even though a World Cup qualification remains far-fetched. India could not clear the first round qualification hurdle for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to be held in Qatar, having managed to play good football only in patches. Adil, nevertheless, expressed optimism. “Indian football is growing in a good way and is on the correct path. I just wish it keeps growing the way it has been and tries to maintain the quality,” the 32-year-old defender said during an AIFF TV interview. He praised the authorities for being able to resume footballing action in the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “It is great. After more than seven months without any football activity, we’re back to the pitch once again. “I followed the Hero I-League Qualifiers closely and have noticed the positive buzz around it – that’s fantastic. Kudos to the AIFF for bringing back sports, let alone football, move one step closer to normalcy.”

The incident appears to have occurred during Mumbai’s chase of 165 on Wednesday evening when Morris gave Pandya a send-off after getting him out caught in the 19th

over to which the Mumbai batsman responded rather angrily. Both players admitted to the charges levelled against them, Morris to the Level 1 offence 2.5 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct and Pandya to the Level 1 offence 2.20 of IPL’s Code of Conduct, the IPL statement further read. Mumbai Indians are currently placed at the top of the table with 16 points and on the verge of qualification, while RCB are at the second spot with 14 points from 12 matches.

Manchester United’s Alex Telles IPL betting tests positive for Covid-19 racket busted in Delhi, 3 nabbed

Alex Telles

Manchester, Oct 29 (IANS): Manchester United defender Alex Telles has tested positive for novel coronavirus, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed. Telles missed Wednesday’s 5-0 victory over RB Leipzig. The full-back was absent for the victory, and last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea, but Solskjaer revealed after the Champions League triumph that the left-back was unavailable due to illness. “He’s been out now for a little while,” Solskjaer told MUTV. “He’s tested positive for the coronavirus. But he has no symptoms; he’s fine and we can’t wait to get him back.” K Y M C

Telles had joined United on deadline day earlier this month and made an impressive debut for the Reds in last week’s 2-1 victory over Paris SaintGermain. The Brazilian, who signed from Portuguese outfit Porto, played 67 minutes at the Parc des Princes and his delivery from setpieces was one of the numerous stand-out moments from his United debut. United’s win over Leipzig has taken them at the top of Group H after two games, three points ahead of Paris-Saint Germain (PSG) and RB Leipzig, with a doubleheader against Istanbul Basaksehir up next.

New Delhi, Oct 29 (IANS): An Indian Premier League (IPL) gambling racket was busted and three persons were arrested by Delhi police in Kotla Mubarakpur area of south Delhi. The police on Wednesday received a tip-off about an IPL betting racket operating at Saini Basti in Kotla Mubarakpur. “At nearly 10.33 p.m. a raid at a house in Saini Basti was conducted after complying with all the legal aspects,” said Atul Thakur, DCP, south Delhi. Three persons were apprehended on the spot while they were operating the gambling racket through their phones. The apprehended persons were identified as Ashish Gupta, Yogesh and Himanshu Rawat. “As many as five mobile phones, three registers with entries amounting to Rs 60,000 and Rs 26,000, previous entries worth more than Rs 3,50,000 and a pen were seized. IPL teams for betting included Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore,” the police official added.

Guardiola won 179 of his 247 games in charge of Barcelona and won 14 major trophies with the club, including three La Liga titles and the Champions League twice.

Ajay, Shubhankar out of SaarLorLux Open amid COVID scare; in isolation

Lakshya Sen, Subhankar Dey and Ajay Jayaram.

Saarbrucken (Germany), Oct 29 (PTI): Indian shuttlers Ajay Jayaram and Shubhankar Dey were on Thursday forced out of the SaarLorLux Open after being put in isolation owing to contact with COVID positive father-cum-coach of defending champion Lakshya Sen, who has already withdrawn. The 19-year-old Lakshya withdrew on Wednesday after his father D K Sen returned a positive test for the dreaded virus. D K Sen is asymptomatic at this point. “BWF can confirm three players have been withdrawn from the SaarLorLux Open 2020 as a precautionary measure

for all participants after they were in contact with a member of their team entourage who tested positive for COVID-19,” the Badminton World Federation said in a statement. “The three players: Lakshya Sen, Ajay Jayaram and Subhankar Dey will not compete further in the tournament, which began on Tuesday,” it added. All three players and the team entourage have been placed into isolation “in line with directives from tournament organisers, local health authorities and BWF tour nament health protocols.” Lakshya, Jayaram and Dey had tested negative ahead of the tournament.

Lakshya, who claimed five titles in the senior circuit last year including two BWF World Tour Super 100 top honours SaarLorLux Open and Dutch Open, received a bye in the opening round along with Dey. Jayaram had won his opening-round clash on Monday.

Ashley Kratzer

LONDON (AP) : A 21year-old Californian who once earned a U.S. Open berth by winning the U.S. Tennis Association’s national girls’ championship was given a four-year doping ban after testing positive at a tournament. Ashley Kratzer’s punishment was announced by the International Tennis Federation on Thursday. Kratzer was provisionally suspended in March for her test result at a WTA event in Newport Beach, California, in January. The ITF said an in-

dependent tribunal determined Kratzer “had not discharged her burden of rebutting the presumption of intentional use” and ruled that she is ineligible to compete until March 2024. She can appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Kratzer won the USTA’s 18s championship in 2017, which gave her a wild-card invitation to that year’s U.S. Open, her only Grand Slam main-draw appearance. She lost in the first round to Tatjana Maria.

BARCELONA, OCT 29 (AGENCIES): Barcelona presidential frontrunner Victor Font wants Pep Guardiola to return to the club and has “no doubt” Lionel Messi will stay, reports Sky Sports.com. Cur rent president Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned earlier this week, along with his board of directors, ahead of an expected vote of no confidence next month. It comes after months of widespread criticism over the club’s worsening finances and the team’s decline on the pitch, which came to a head with their 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals in August. Font has quickly become the frontrunner to succeed Bartomeu and exclusively told Sky Sports News he has a clear plan to bring back the glory days to La Liga giants involving the old Barca dynasty breathing new life into the current one.

96 percent athletes report at SAI CSK put big dent on KKR’s chances of playoffs centres, provided air and train tickets

DUBAI, OCT 29 (PTI): Ravindra Jadeja smashed consecutive sixes in the final over as Chennai Super Kings put a big dent in Kolkata Knight Riders’ chances of reaching the IPL play-offs with a thrilling six-wicket win here on Thursday. With his team needing 10 off the final over, Jadeja (31 not out off 11) dispatched the young Kamlesh Nagarkoti for back-toback sixes to pull off another consolatory win for CSK, who are already out of the play-offs reckoning. Opener Ruturaj Gaikwad set up the chase nicely for CSK with a sublime 72 off 53 balls, his second straight fifty-plus score. KKR had made a competitive 172 for five courtesy opener Nitish Rana (87 off 61) and some crisp hitting in the death overs from Dinesh Karthik (21 not out off 10). Not only the loss made things tougher for KKR, it also sent Mumbai Indians into the IPL playoffs with the defending champions becoming the first team to qualify. Gaikwad played some delightful shots during the course of his knock and a few audacious ones included a sweep off pacer

Lockie Ferguson. CSK scored 44 runs in the powerplay overs with Gaikwad outscoring the veteran Shane Watson. His straight six off spinner Varun Chakravarthy was the best shot of his classy innings. Wa t s o n ( 1 4 , w h o came into the side for Faf du Plessis, struggled to get going before an attempt to hit his way out didn’t come off to give Chakravarthy his first wicket. Sheffield Utd player rejects new contract

John Lundstram

BRAMHALL, OCT 29 (AGENCIES): Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder says it is “frustrating” that midfielder John Lundstram has rejected a new contract offer, reports BBC Sports. Lundstram, 26, is in the final year of his current deal and is now set to leave Bramall Lane. He has started all six of the club’s Premier League games this season. “We have offered him a very good contract that is

up there with the top players at the club. He doesn’t want to sign it,” Wilder said. Wilder confirmed the Englishman, who has been with the Blades since signing from Oxford United in 2017, remains available for selection, but that the club now expects to sell him in January. “It is a very good offer but there are always two sides to every story and John and his agent feel that they maybe want to nego-

tiate elsewhere, so that’s where it’s at,” Wilder said. “I am very frustrated about that. Cards on the table, I believe John should have signed it.” He added: “He most likely wants to run his contract down, so we will invite offers for a very good player who did well for us in the Premier League last season.” United, who are yet to win this season and sit 19th in the table, host Manchester City on Saturday.

tournament. His attempt to make room and play a forcing shot saw him play all over the delivery and lose his stumps. Earlier, a late burst helped Kolkata Knight Riders get to a competitive total. Following Rana’s 61ball effort, cameos from skipper Eoin Morgan (15 off 12) and Karthik allowed KKR to put up a competitive total. CSK, who pulled things back in the middle overs after a fine start from

KKR openers Rana and Shubman Gill (26 off 17), leaked 66 runs in the last five overs. Lungi Ngidi (2/34) was the best bowler for CSK while Sam Curran also bowled well early on. The KKR innings was built largely on Rana’s knock which comprised 10 fours and four sixes. The southpaw mixed caution with aggression and overcame a sluggish period in the middle overs with some lovely shots. Rana hit three consecutive sixes off Karn Sharma in the 16th over to up the ante as KKR looked for quick runs. Sent in to bat, KKR got off to a solid start with Gill and Rana putting on 53 runs for the first wicket. Gill looked in good touch and hit four boundaries before falling to leggie Sharma. Sunil Narine (7), sent in at number three, smashed the second ball for a six and fell four balls later, unable to clear a Mitchell Santner delivery with Ravindra Jadeja taking the catch. KKR decided to send Rinku Singh, who was picked for the first time this season, ahead of Morgan at number four.

NEW DELHI, OCT 29 (PTI): Athletes reporting back to training at Sports Authority of India’s centres of excellence are being provided with air and train tickets with some of them being allowed to join after Diwali due to the situation arising out of COVID-19 pandemic. The SAI has made transport arrangements for the athletes travelling to their respective national centre of excellence. “Athletes who have to travel beyond 500 km are provided with an air ticket while those who are stationed less than 500 km may travel by train in 3rd AC,” SAI said in a statement on Thursday. With Tokyo and Paris Olympics in mind, a vast majority of athletes have resumed training at SAI’s centres of excellence after months of inactivity due to the pandemic. Athletes joining the camps will be in mandatory quarantine and take the RT-PCR test. “For athletes training for 2024 Olympics, 96 percent of trainees have already reported to their respective SAI NCOEs

and Training centres in Aurangabad, Bhopal, Bangalore, Delhi, Lucknow, Rohtak and Sonepat,” SAI said. Trainees, once inside the NCOE bio-bubble will not be allowed to leave the camps, owing to safety issues. Therefore, athletes were given the option of joining on Nov 1, 2020 or after Diwali. “Our Tokyo-bound athletes are already training and I am happy that in this phase too so many athletes have also joined the camp,” sports minister Kiren Rijiju said. “This shows that athletes have complete confidence in the SOP prepared by SAI to resume sporting activities and have therefore reported to training camps with great eagerness. “The safety of our athletes is of primary im-

portance and all measures will be taken to ensure they can train in a safe environment.” Some trainees could not join immediately and will be reporting to their respective SAI centres after Diwali. As per union health ministry guidelines and state health protocol, elaborate safety measures have been put in place, including colour coding and zoning of the centres to ensure that athletes do not come into contact with outsiders. Efforts have been made to ensure that athletes have a safe environment to reside and train in. Additionally, the nodal sports body’s authorities reached out to all athletes and their parents to apprise them about the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that are in place which have to be followed prior to and after joining the SAI centres. “Athletes and parents who have been contacted have been positive about the measures that are in place for themselves and their kin,” SAI said in the statement.

India likely to back New Zealand’s Hyderabad FC, Marbella FC Greg Barclay for ICC chairman’s post announce strategic tie-up NEW DELHI, OCT 29 (PTI): The BCCI is likely to back the candidature of New Zealand’s Greg Barclay over Singapore’s Imran Khwaja in the elections for the ICC chairman, a post vacated by India’s Shashank Manohar after two terms in July this year. Barclay and Khwaja are the only two candidates contesting for the chairman’s post and the 16member all-powerful ICC Board is set to vote in the first week of December. While hectic backchannel talks are on to find a unanimous candidate and put up a picture of unity among the Board of Directors (mostly comprising of member nations), it is highly unlikely that Khwaja will have the backing of the Indian cricket board. “The BCCI is more aligned with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) and those who matter in Indian cricket board find Barclay as a more suitable candidate for the post. Also Khwaja’s policy positioning isn’t exactly in favour of Indian cricket,” a senior official, privy to developments in

Greg Barclay (File).

ICC board, told PTI on conditions of anonymity. “But one month is a big time in cricket’s administrative politics. If Khwaja can come around and probably be on the same page with the BCCI, you never know. Barclay, with his focus on bilateral cricket, is more acceptable to India,” the veteran administrator, who has seen many a board room battles, said. There are a few issues due to which current ICC deputy chairman Khwaja won’t find favour with the BCCI. Firstly, the role played by him along with Manohar to roll back the proposed revenue model in which India, England and Australia stood to gain

more. The matter was up for vote and Khwaja and Manohar, had back then, gathered enough votes to crush the BCCI. Secondly, the ICC in 2019, had drawn up a rough calendar for the 2023 FTP cycle and till 2028, each and every year, there was a senior men’s flagship event kept in that, the revenues from which would have benefitted the smaller nations. It is understood that the white paper that ICC prepared had Khwaja’s tacit support. In fact, BCCI had strong objections to such a proposal. However, in the post COVID-19 world, each and every board, which has had multiple bilateral series cancelled, would like to squeeze in as many of them as there is handsome revenue generation through broadcasting rights. That Khwaja will not have BCCI’s backing is also a given considering his proximity to Pakistan Cricket Board head Ehsan Mani. The BCCI and PCB have had their share of differences in the ICC board.

H y derabad, O ct 29 (PTI): Indian Super League side Hyderabad FC on Thursday announced a three-year strategic tie-up with Spanish club Marbella FC. The Andalusia-based club currently plays in the Segunda División B (second division), having narrowly missed out on promotion last season. Hyderabad FC coowner Varun Tripuraneni said, “Marbella FC has one of the top infrastructure facilities in not just Spain, but entire Europe. “This tie-up allows us to explore a lot of opportunities which will help Hyderabad FC on the technical side of the game. For starters, the top young players in our first and reserve team will head to Marbella for an extended training period, once travel opens up.” Through the tie-up, Hyderabad FC shall be at liberty to avail the facilities and infrastructure of Marbella FC for conducting preseason for HFC’s first team players, and will also

have the opportunity of utilising their medical personnel and facilities. “The facilities and infrastructure will offer a great level of exposure for our players and the idea is to provide medium to long term training experience and not just a short camp,” added Tripuraneni. Marbella FC general manager Hector Morales said, “This alliance will allow us to be in contact with one of the most important clubs from an emerging football market. “We are convinced that this will bring great benefits for both clubs. We are already working with Hyderabad FC to start this new adventure together as soon as possible.” Apart from gaining their sporting and technical assistance, Hyderabad FC will also have access to Marbella FC’s global network to scout players. Options also exist to loan players, as well as sign and invest in them strategically as part of the tie-up for both sides.

Srikkanth slams Manjrekar for questioning KL’s Test selection Vaughan hits out at Marlon Samuels New Delhi, Oct 29 (IANS): Former batsman Kris Srikkanth has criticised cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar for questioning KL Rahul’s selection in India’s Test squad for the upcoming Australia tour. Rahul, who has been in scintillating form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), has been recalled for the BorderGavaskar Trophy scheduled to be played in DecemberJanuary. According a Manjrekar, a bad precedent is set when a played is recalled for Test on the basis of his IPL performance and it “massively motivates” players playing the Ranji Trophy. “ I t’s Sa njay M a n jrekar’s job to question stuff, so leave him alone,” Srikkanth said a video posted on his YouTube channel ‘Cheeky Cheeka’. “Questioning KL Rahul’s selection in Tests? He has played well in Tests. I

Srikkanth advised Manjrekar to think of cricketers who are coming from other parts of the country and not just focus on players from Mumbai.

won’t agree at all. Just because Sanjay wants to question something, I don’t think I’ll agree. You shouldn’t question something just to create a controversy. KL Rahul has done brilliantly in all formats. Go through his Test record.” Rahul has so far played 36 Tests for India in which he has scored 2,006 runs, including five hundreds and 11 half-centuries.

“What Sanjay Manjrekar is talking is all rubbish. I’ll not agree,” he said. “Rahul might have been inconsistent but the same KL Rahul made his debut in Australia and made a century. He’s a good player of fast bowling. Let’s understand, he’s a very good player of fast bowling,” Srikkanth said. Rahul was dropped from India’s Test squad after

a forgettable series in West Indies last year, where he aggregated 101 runs from four innings. He was not even included even in the A side for the tour of New Zealand earlier this year. In the last five Test series, Rahul has scored 101 runs against the West Indies (2019), 57 runs in three matches against Australia (2018-19), 37 runs in two Tests against the West Indies

(2018-19), 299 runs in five Tests in England (2018) and 54 run in lone Test against Afghanistan (2018). Srikkanth further advised Manjrekar to think of cricketers who are coming from other parts of the country and not just focus on players from Mumbai. “Sanjay Manjrekar cannot think beyond Bombay. That’s the problem. We are talking neutral. Manjrekar cannot think beyond Bombay. For people like Manjrekar, everything is Bombay, Bombay and Bombay. They have to think beyond Bombay,” said the 60-year-old. Virat Kohli-led Team India will begin the title defence of the BorderGavaskar Trophy with the pink-ball Test in Adelaide from December 17, followed by Tests at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (December 26), the Sydney Cricket Ground (January 7) and the Gabba (January 15).

New Delhi, Oct 29 (IANS): Former England captain Michael Vaughan has hit out at West Indies’ Marlon Samuels for his expletive-laden rant against Ben Stokes. Samuels had insulted Stokes’ wife on his Instagram account and said that he had a “superior skin tone” to him. “This is appalling Marlon Samuels... we are trying to stamp out racism...!!! A bit of banter by Ben Stokes should not lead to this...,” Vaughan said in a tweet. For mer Australian spinner Shane Warne also criticised Samuels and tweeted: “I’ve just been sent what Samuels has posted re Ben Stokes and I. It’s a very sad situation as he obviously needs serious help - but has no friends at all and not even his ex-teammates like him. Just because you were an ordinary cricketer - no need to be an ordinary person. Get help son.” Samuels’s tirade had come in response to Stokes

Michael Vaughan

saying that he wouldn’t wish the experience of undergoing quarantine for Covid-19, even on his worst enemy before naming the West Indies batsman. “I posted a few Instagram stories and some of the England boys were messaging me asking what it’s like and I was saying it wasn’t the most enjoyable thing you ever have to do, I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy,” Stokes had said in a recent podcast with Test Match Special. He was asked about undergoing quarantine while visiting his

ailing father in New Zealand halfway through the Test series against Pakistan and later when he arrived in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). “I texted my brother saying the same thing, and my brother asked: ‘You wouldn’t even do that to Marlon Samuels?’ I said ‘no, it’s that bad’ -- that’s how tough it was,” the England all-rounder joked. Sportspersons have been coming out in open and speaking more about racism since the death of African-American George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police personnel in May earlier this year. Cricket joined hands with the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement for the first time when both England and the West Indies teams, along with the match officials, took a knee earlier this summer during their threematch Test series.
