Oil slick in state politics STAYED COURT ORDER ON OIL OPERATION HAUNTS NAGALAND GOVT

Kohima,Oct 30 (NPN): In the aftermath of the sacking of BJP legislator Mmhonlumo Kikon from the post of parliamentary secretary skill development and border affairs by chief minister T.R. Zeliang, the three line-order signed by cabinet secretary and acting chief secretary R.B. Thong on October 28, contained nothing to indicate possible reasons for such a drastic step which has taken the state BJP aback and surprised central BJP about the entire episode. Surprisingly, the state BJP, till Sunday, has not issued any statement over the sacking of its legislator and its total silence on the matter has only encouraged speculations. The BJP has been a long time ally of NPF since 2003 in the DAN and despite hiccups along the way, both have managed to sustain the alliance. Efforts to have comments from the state BJP president Visasolie Lhoungu on the issue were received with a curt reply to contact
the state BJP spokesperson. However the spokesperson James Vizo refused to answer persistent calls or respond to text messages. As reported earlier, some NPF sources had cited the probably reasons as being “anti-DAN” activities; meaning that Mmhonlumo was acting against the ruling DAN by being close with former chief minister and Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio. Another BJP leader however expressed shock at the development. It was also learnt that the central BJP has asked for details about the entire episode. From various indications, it is evident that the BJP legislator from 40 Bhandari has been made the scapegoat for his inability to have the Lotha Hoho to withdraw its PIL against the NP & NG Regulations 2012. DAN sources claimed that Mmhonlumo’s appointment as parliamentary secretary with a ‘lucrative portfolio’ was with the understanding that he would engage with the Lotha Hoho to withdraw its PIL filed in
the Gauhati High Court. According to informed sources, state chief minister T.R.Zeliang had reportedly told a delegation of BJP legislators and party office bearers who had gone to meet him in Kohima, that Mmhonlumo was sacked because he failed to make Lotha Hoho to withdraw the PIL. It may be recalled that Lotha Hoho had filed a PIL in the Gauhati High Court against the MoU signed by the state government with Metropolitan Oil and Gas Private Limited with regard to certain clauses contained in the NP&NG Regulations 2012. The Gauhati High Court had on October 8, 2015 stayed the permit issued by the state government to Metropolitan Oil and Gas Private Limited(MOGPL) in 2014 till the case was disposed off. This was a huge setback for the MOGPL, a firm that was incorporated only on 14 September 2012, just a few months before submitting its EoI for bidding for oil zones in Nagaland. What is also of inter-
No question of ruling out integration: Zhehoto Awomi DIMAPUR, OCT 30 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) Sumi Region organized a consultative meeting on October 27 with the public of Suruhuto Town on the Naga political issue. In a press note secretary Sumi Region, Mulho Achumi said the main speakers at the meeting were Avuli Chishi Swu executive, steering committee and Zhehoto Awomi, kilonser of health. Stressing on the August 3 Framework Agreement, Zhehoto Awomi said though the exact time and date for the final settlement cannot be predicted, but it would be soon as the government of India was serious on the Naga issue. He also reiterated that the “Framework was a preamble of Nagas based on co-existence of two separate powers”. Answering to some questions raised by the public, Awomi reminded that the GoI had already recognised the uniqueness of Naga his-
tory, therefore the question of ruling out integration does not arise. He further noted saying “there will be no solution without integration”. It was stated that Avuli Swu, as a living witness spoke on the struggles faced during and after the formation of NSCN/ GPRN led by late Isak Chishi Swu and Th. Muivah. “It was only by the grace of God, we have reached thus far,” Avuli Swu said, and appealed all to “commit oneself more towards God to achieve our goal”. Meanwhile, addressing the public CAO caretaker Sumi Region Khehoshi Chishi sent out a clear message to the public and Sumis “not to be confused, as sovereignty of Naga lies with the people”. The meeting was attended by over 200 people including Suruhuto Area GB association, Village chieftains, STH, Church leaders, student leaders, elders and public leaders, Mulho stated.
est is that MOGPL had revealed that it has already incurred expenditure of around Rs.10 crore for the project. It may be recalled the MOGPL was awarded Changpang and Tssori oil fields under Wokha zone besides Peren district. The oil and minerals belong to the Naga people and which has been clearly mentioned under Article 371A of the constitution of India. A legislator who did not wish to be named, said that the issue is not about whether or not to operationalise oil activities but whether the matter can be rushed in haste for short term gains and invite long term losses. He also said if expenditure was incurred by MOGPL then people have a right to know the details. It may also be recalled that Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), while hitting out to a statement from independent legislator Thomas Ngullie, had countered that if he felt so strongly about Article 371A, why can’t he convince the Lotha community to withdraw its PIL on oil operations. Give up arms, fight democratically: Rijiju’s appeals North East ultras Correspondent
IMPHAL, OCT 30: Union minister of state for Home, Kiren Rijiju on Sunday called upon all insurgent groups of the North Eastern region to shun violence, give up arms and come to the main stream to fight for their rights democratically. Rijiu, who is on a twoday visit to Manipur to kickstart the BJP election campaign, reminded the ultra groups that “any problem can be resolved through dialogue”. “Violence is not the solution. Every problem should have solution and it can be resolved through talks,” he stated. To a query on antiIndian activities from Myanmar’s territory, Rijiju said: “There is good cooperation presently with the government of Myanmar and government of India. About the security operation, I cannot lay out the details but we have good understanding. In future too, any anti-India activity will not be promoted in Myanmar territory and leaders of the country came.” Meanwhile, talking to reporters on the sidelines
Okotso firing: NPMHR hits back at AR DIMAPUR, OCT 30 (NPN): A day after Assam Rifles clarified on the alleged desecration of a Church by its troopers, the Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) Sunday hit back saying that desecrating of religious places was not new to the Indian armed forces. Desecration of religious place by security forces took place not only in Christian Churches, but can be witnessed in “Operation Bluestar” carried out by Indian military forces and many others across India, said NPMHR in a press statement. NPMHR also recalled the incident of July 11, 1971, where four teenage girls (all below 18 years) were alleged to have been tortured and raped from the pulpit of Yankeli Baptist Christian Church, under Wokha district by secu-
rity forces. The October 22 incident was a reminder to the Nagas, how 28th Assam Rifles forcefully occupied the Mekokla Baptist Church and its guest house, and carried out attacked on a group of Naga army, who were in Ceasefire truce with the government of India. The human rights body also dismissed AR’s claim that they “have immense respect for all religions and will never take any step or action to disrespect any religious place of worship”, and said that the perpetrators were nonother than the AR. In this regard, NPMHR questioned AR that whether there was any other higher level of arrogance that adds salts to fresh injury and insults human intelligence of the highest degree? The right body argued
that the recent forceful occupation of religious places at Mekokla was a grim reminder that the war against Naga people was taking place every day in all kinds. It stated that these kinds of human rights violations and psychological abuses have rekindled horrible memories in India’s occupational war against the Nagas for nearly a century. Instead, NPMHR claimed that the “occasional so-called Ceasefires and Peace Talks”, have given full freedom to the Indian military to do anything and everything with full impunity under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act. It stated that AR’s motto “Friends of the Hill People” was the biggest insult to all peoples of North East India.
Kiren Rijiju (File)
of a BJP programme held at Kalapahar in Manipur’s Senapati district, Rijiju rubbished the accusations that the Central government gave “free hands” to NSCN (I-M) to carry out the attack on Manipur chief minister. Refusing to make any further comments on the incident, Rijiju said how can anybody allow them— NSCN (I-M), to carry out such illegal and subversive activities. “The central government and state government should come together to ensure that this kind of illegal activities do not take place,” Rijiju added. “I will not pass any comment unless official report is available because it is a sensitive matter and I should not comment on it for the time being,” Rijiju said to a query from a re-
porter. The Union minister fervently appealed to the people of the region to live peacefully and maintain communal harmony in order to usher in development. On Sunday, Manipur police claimed to have arrested another cadre of the NSCN (I-M), allegedly involved in the Ukhrul incident. Manipur police PRO said the NSCN (I-M) cadre Honpam Jajo (48) was among those involved in planning the attack against Manipur CM at Ukhrul. Once Chinese make hand grenade was seized from his possession, PRO informed. “Investigation revealed that he is a member of village authority of Kangkhum village and also a member of the Naga People’s Front (NPF) Phungyar Assembly Constituency,” Manipur police PRO said in a communiqué. PRO said Jajo was involved in planning the attack besides providing information of movement of security forces. Police further said Jajo was involved in extortion from various transport/travel agencies, businessmen.
MDTOA temporarily suspends ‘chakka bandh’
D I M A P U R , O ct 3 0 (NPN): Following an appeal from Mokokchung district administration, the proposed “chakka bandh” called by Mokokchung District Truck Owners Association (MDTOA) has been kept in abeyance, informed Mokokchung District Commercial Vehicles Owners Association (MDCVOA) in a press statement on Sunday. Irked over deplorable condition of MokokchungMariani road (NH 702 D), the MDTOA resolved to impose the bandh from November 1 in all the NHs connecting Mokokchung. The decision to this effect was taken at the joint meeting of MDTOA and commercial vehicles owners’ organization including Pick-Up Truck Owners Union, All Nagaland Taxi Association Mokokchung (Cont’d on p-7) District and Private Bus
Owners Union Mokokchung on October 30. Earlier, at the meeting with district administration on October 28, ADC Mokokchung requested for an extension of the deadline till November 20, with an assurance that the department of National Highway would undertake “substantial repairs of the road to make it motorable and safe for all vehicles.” In this regard, the association cautioned that it would impose lightning bandh any day without any pre-information if the authorities fail to start the repair works by the first week of November. In the event of the authorities fail to keep their words, the lightning bandh will also be imposed by the commercial vehicle owners associations in the whole of Mokokchung district for an indefinite period as notified earlier.
Cancer hijacks common immune cell weapon to promote spread ENCSU cautions state govt NEW YORK, OCT 30 (AGENCIES): Our immune system is our first line of defense against nasty pathogens and, thanks to some remarkable biological weapons, it saves us again and again from disease. Among the footsoldiers on this front line are the neutrophils. These common white blood cells can deploy a toxin-laden net made of their own DNA that acts like a spider’s web to trap and kill invaders like bacteria and yeast. Now, a new study reveals how cancer cells hijack these DNA nets - potentially using them to cut holes in tissue so they can migrate through the body. In the journal Science Translational Medicine, researchers from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) in New York and the DanaFarber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts, describe how they used electron microscopy to observe
cancer cells hijacking DNA nets, and how they experimented with ways to overcome this process in mice. Neutrophils are a group of white blood cells that are among the first to confront potential enemies. First, they try to gobble them up and digest them. However, some pathogens can get around this, so neutrophils have another weapon at their disposal. They can deploy toxin-studded nets - appropriately named neutrophil extracellular traps, or NETs - to trap and kill the enemy. The NET is ejected from an activated neutrophil when the neutrophil detects a threat. It is a lattice made of the white blood cell’s own DNA and studded with tiny toxic enzymes that chemically attack and digest the trapped pathogen. Led by Associate Prof. Mikala Egeblad, the CSHL researchers used live-imaging technology to look
at how cancer cells hijack NETs to promote their ability to spread. They used a mouse model of triplenegative breast cancer - a cancer known to be most aggressive in humans, and notorious for spreading and relapsing. The authors note in their paper: “Using intravital imaging, we observed NET-like structures around metastatic 4T1 cancer cells that had reached the lungs of mice. We also found NETs in clinical samples of triple-negative human breast cancer.” Although they did not uncover the precise mechanisms involved, the researchers believe the makeup of the NETs helps cancer cells migrate through tissue by literally eating through the protein-scaffolding that forms the tissue structure. They suggest the NETs create small holes and crevices for the cancer cells, thus helping to promote new
colonies away from the primary tumor. How to stop NETs helping cancer cells: The team also investigated the question of how to stop NETs helping cancer cells. An obvious dilemma is if you stop the process altogether then you could cause enormous harm, as the body relies on neutrophils deploying their NETs to keep it safe. For some clues on how to proceed, the team looked at a treatment used in patients with cystic fibrosis, a disease that prevents the lungs from clearing infections. The lungs of cystic fibrosis patients are burdened with too many NETs from neutrophils trying to fight the infection. Cystic fibrosis patients can inhale a drug that includes a DNA-dissolving enzyme called DNase to eliminate the NETs. Up to this point, the work was being done in
Prof. Egeblad’s lab at CSHL. The next challenge was how to develop a mechanism that might be used in cancer patients to deliver something like DNase into the affected tissue. Prof. Egeblad describes what happened next: “We are incredibly lucky to have the help of Dr. Michael Goldberg and his team at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. We were explaining our discovery at a conference and mentioned that we were lacking a way to get DNase to work inside tissues and Dr. Goldberg said he might be able to help.” Dr. Goldberg and his team had found a stable way to deliver enzymes such as DNase by attaching them to nanoparticles that can be injected into humans. The researchers saw this as promising because as the DNase would be on the outside of the nanoparticle, its cutting action could begin on contact with the DNA NETs.
DIMAPUR, OCT 30 (NPN): Eastern Nagaland College Students’ Union (ENCSU) has reaffirmed that the union would standby by the July 26 & October 29 ultimatums demanding four MMBS seats to six backward tribes of Eastern Nagaland. In a press note, ENCSU chairman Longre Chang and jt. secretary Nokchem Angth warned that if government failed to fulfil their demands immediately, the union would be “compelled “to revoke its temporarily suspended agitation in consultation with the ENSF”. ENCSU said it was shocked to learn that “some non-Eastern tribes, who were showing lukewarm attitude, were treacherously benefited out of the union’s fight”. “If other tribes can benefit double out of our cry than why not the six backward tribes?”, ENCSU stated. The union also pointed saying “if the government could give two/three seats than there was no problem in giving four seats”. Even after the lapse of 96 days, ENCSU said the government wanted to compromise the issue by allotting two seats. This offer cannot be accepted until there were some conditions to safeguard the two still missing seats, the union added. It said manipulative game played by some people, trying to disintegrate the unity among the Eastern Nagas should be avoided before the things become unhealthy, the union cautioned. Eastern Nagaland College Students’ Union further demanded that those students, even after being allocated the seats, should be admitted safely by the government and the department concern and should avoid any confusion that will hinder their career. Tribal community safe under Modi government, says Johnny G Rengma Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, OCT 30 (NPN): National BJP VicePresident for Scheduled Tribe Morcha, Johnny G Rengma Sunday said tribal communities in India were safe under prime minister Narendra Modi’s government. Rengma was briefing media persons in Dimapur after attending the National Tribal Carnival in New Delhi which was inaugurated by prime minister Narendra Modi. He informed that more that around 28000 tribal delegates attended the carnival which was held from October 25 to 28 in New Delhi. According to Rengma, two cultural troupe- Arts and Culture Department and State BJPtook part in the carnival. When asked about the sacking of BJP MLA Mhonlumo Kikon from the post of parliamentary secretary, Rengma main-
tained the chief minister is accountable to the people as advisors and parliamentary secretaries holds office of public scrutiny. In this regard, he said the chief minister has the prerogative to keep/drop any MLA in accordance to their performance. Rengma added there should be no reason to drag the mater into political angle. On the relationship between BJP and NPF post sacking of Mhonlumo Kikon, Rengma said NPF was one of the oldest surviving regional parties and that the BJP has been maintaining stable relationship with the BJP since many years. “Our relationship with the NPF remains stable under the presidentship (NPF) of Shürhozelie Liezietsu and T.R. Zeliang as the chief minister of DAN government,” Rengma stated. He added that the relationship was unlike
when Neiphiu Rio was the chief minister of Nagaland which, he said, experienced “flip-flops” as Rio used to extend issue based support to the Congress led UPA government at the centre. With regard to the framework agreement visà-vis 2018 state election, Rengma said the Modi government has broken all past records in dealing with underground outfits by coming up with the framework agreement which, he maintained, was the laying of a foundation stone to resolve the protracted Naga political issue. “Previous gover nments also engaged in negotiations but no solid foundation was laid,” he contented. He also informed that the party was ”fully engaged” with the Manipur elections. “I am happy that my state unit are fully preparing to win the coming election in Nagaland,” he added.

Assam bypolls: Sonowal, Sarma face litmus test New Delhi, Oct 30 (Agencies): Bypolls in Assam slated on 19 November is likely to be the BJP’s litmus test on the issue of Citizenship Amendment Act. The ruling NDA’s move to pass the amendment has faced stiff opposition from various groups in Assam. Winning the bypolls may be deemed as a green signal by the BJP to accept the much-debated bill. On the other hand losing might make BJP think twice on it. Assam is heading for bypolls on in the Lakhimpur parliamentary constituency and Baithalangso Assembly constituency. “In recent time BJP has seen a downfall in its popularity graph in Assam due to the move taken by BJP-led NDA government at the Centre to grant Hindu Bangladeshis Indian citizenship by a new amendment in the Citizenship Act. Hence this election may be like testing the waters about how to go ahead with the bill, for the party,” says Naba Thakuria of Patriotic People’s Front Assam. Assam has a strong
Himanta Biswa Sarma and Sarbananda Sonowal trend of linguistic identity politics by dint of which Asom Gana Parishad rose to power in the state twice. Pressure groups and political parties subscribing to the ideology of linguistic identity politics have along been demanding that Bangladeshis those who have infiltrated into Assam are to be extradited irrespective of their religious affiliation. BJP’s stance to grant citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis have been stiffly
resisted by these groups. Lakhimpur Lok Sabha constituency had no representation after Sarbananda Sonowal, its representative rose to be the Chief Minister of Assam. The vacancy in the Baithalangso assembly constituency occurred after its MLA Mansing Rongpi resigned from Congress to join BJP. In the 2014 general election, the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha constituency saw more than 50 percent of its voters swinging in
favour of BJP candidate Sonowal, who is seen as an Assamese national hero for his effort to repeal IMDT Act, which was seen as a legal protection to Bangladeshi infiltrators. Whether the voters in Lakhimpur constituency will support the BJP the same way this time as it did in 2014 General Election, especially when Sonowal’s heroic image is weaning after the Citizenship Amendment Bill was placed in Lok Sabha, is an important question for the party. For the party is soon going to face another election in Manipur early next year, and the amendment to the Citizenship Act is opposed by many in that state also. “Certainly this election is going to be a litmus test for BJP. This is the reason why the party is trying to woo the voters by declaring mega projects,” says Apurba Kumar Baruah, an Assamese intellectual. Recently Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Shipping announced projects worth Rs 1 lakh crore in roads and transport sector of Assam, which this time is going to
be the BJP’s election plank for not only in the bypolls but also in all the other upcoming assembly elections in the northeastern region. Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently declared to establish a Hills University in a bid to win the voters in the Boithalangsu constituency, an assembly seat in the Karbi Anglong Hills. The upcoming bypolls puts the popularity of Chief Minister Sonowal as a national hero and that of Sarma as a born achiever in a re-test. The miracle of 2016 assembly election in which BJP asserted its glory in Assam, happened mostly because of the perception the voters had about these two leaders. The success of the central leadership of the party lies in roping in Sonowal with his clean image and Sarma with that of a doer. But recently both the leaders had to burn the midnight oil to do the homework just to retain their support bases. For a number of decisions taken by the new dispensation led by them faced stiff protest from the public.

(Agencies): The gambling of dice during Diwali is common in parts of the Northeast. So, when a District Magistrate (DM) in Arunachal Pradesh did not grant permission for it to a market welfare association in state capital Itanagar, it enforced the closure of shops in the town on Saturday and also set a three-day deadline demanding his transfer. The Papum Pare (capital) district authorities on Friday dismantled some structures, which were erected allegedly for the purpose of gambling of dice during Diwali, in Itanagar. The DM, SK Singh, told Express that the association was venting its ire against him as he did not grant permission for it. “It’s an issue of gambling. On Friday, we received information that the Itanagar Market Welfare Association was illegally issuing permits to individuals to organize the gambling of dice in public places. They tried to portray market and public areas as their property. So, the police demolished the structures this (Saturday) morning,” he
have played dice in Itanagar and elsewhere during Diwali. But in 2012, the state government enacted a law that prohibited gambling in the whole of the state. That’s the reason why permission was not granted since. The association wants to run a parallel government which we cannot allow because the rule of law has to be followed,” Singh added. But the market association rubbished his charges. “The structures were erected to sell sweets. Diwali is a big Indian festival and we all celebrate it. Also, we’re not a government body and therefore, the question of issuing permits for gambling does not arise. If we had issued any, that would have gone viral on the social media,” the association chairman Yumlan Achung asserted. He said the commercial establishments would remain closed for three days. “We want the DM to go as he is acting against the interests of the people. If he is not transferred out by Monday, the shops could remain closed for a longer period,” he warned.

GUWAHATI, Oct 30 (Agencies): The ban on Chinese fireworks in the city proved to be a boon for Barpeta as manufacturers of local fireworks in the district did brisk business this Diwali. The All Guwahati Traders’ Association said even though most firecrackers sold in the city were manufactured in Tamil Nadu, the absence of Chinese crackers had helped local fireworks makers immensely. Locally made flowerpots - one of the most important articles in anyone’s Diwali arsenal - were most in demand as their Sivakasi counterparts were costlier. Some of the long-lasting firecrackers made by manufacturers in Barpeta gave even their southern counterparts a run for their money. “Crackers manufactured in Barpeta are known for their quality and durability. The prices of flowerpots made in Barpeta and Sivakasi are almost the same. In case of some high-performance fireworks, the price of the Barpeta-made articles is higher,” Sourav Das, a firecracker-seller said.

Activist blows whistle on dog meat trade
MUMBAI, Oct 30 (Agencies): Two stray dogs in Meghalaya were saved from being clobbered to death after a Mumbaibased animal rights activist alerted the police in the northeastern state on Friday about the impending savagery. Activist Meet Ashar, who works for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA India) in Mumbai, learnt that a man had captured two stray dogs and kept them at a house to kill them and sell the meat. “I contacted the police chief of Meghalaya, SK Jain, who then directed his men to take prompt action. It led to the arrest of one man and the rescue of the dogs,” said Ashar. “We’re thankful to the Meghalaya police for their cooperation.” Police chief of East Khasi Hills dis-
Medical College, where Roy died on Tuesday. Preliminary investigation revealed this was not a case of road accident. It was clearly an attempt of murder but the motive is not known yet, Saptarshi said. A number of civil society organizations, however, have criticized police for its failure to ensure road safety. The manner in which the decision to consider cases of running over as murder cases was taken has also not been appreciated. The organizations have blamed poor traffic management and an unprofessional attitude as being responsible for the increase in road accidents. “Take paddle rickshaws, for instance. While we think paddle rickshaws and battery-operated rickshaws are good as non-polluting modes of transport, the conversion of paddle rickshaws to motor rickshaws is a problem. They do not follow any traffic rules. Police have not taken any action against them for years. It has now become a terror for city-dwellers,” leading social activist KK Roy said.
trict, Vivek Syiem, told TOI that with help from a local NGO, Stray Animal Rescue Society, they raided the spot and arrested a Shillong resident, Ropeklien Hmar, and weapons used to kill dogs were seized from him. Ashar said that the accused often clobbered dogs with a hammer and sell the meat. “The local police sent a decoy customer to inquire about dog meat prices. He was told by Hmar that he could get one kilo for Rs160 or an entire dog’s meat would cost Rs1,000. This was clandestinely recorded on video with the help of local activists,” said Ashar The Meghalaya police are likely to make more arrests in the case. A criminal offence has been filed under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act for illegal dog meat trade.

(Photo-ANI) 1 New Delhi/Shimla, Oct 30 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday wished the nation in his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on the occasion of Diwali, and said this is a festival associated with cleanliness. “Diwali is a festival that is also associated with cleanliness. Ever ybody cleans their homes,” Modi said. In his Mann Ki Baat remark, the Prime Minister said Diwali gives the message to move from darkness to light. Diwali, the festival of lights, has been inspiring the world community to move from darkness to light. “Diwali is a festival that is being celebrated world over,” Modi said. Wishing the citizens well on the occasion, Modi said “India is a country where festivals are celebrated on all 365 days”. Meanwhile Modi on Sunday celebrated Diwali with soldiers in a remote and strategic area in Himachal Pradesh, adjoining the Chinese border. Modi also made an unscheduled trip to a village, Chango, and said he was “deeply touched by the
impromptu reception and their joy”. Dressed in olive green, the Prime Minister interacted with men from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the Dogra Scouts and the army at Sumdoh. Sumdoh, some 330 km from Shimla, is located on the border of Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts. Mingling freely, Modi went up to the soldiers holding a plate of sweets. At least one soldier offered him a sweet in return, much to the joy of everyone. He was accompanied by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and the Army chief, General Dalbir Singh
Suhag. The Prime Minister also met personnel of the General Reserve Engineering Force (GREF), a wing of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) that maintains highways, at Sumdoh, an official said. Modi then spent some time with the locals in Chango village in Kinnaur district, known for its delicious apples. Villagers taken aback by the Prime Minister’s arrival raised slogans hailing him. Dressed in warm clothes, Modi spent time with the residents of the village including women and children. He also posed with everyone in a group photograph, with the mountains providing a majestic background. The Lahaul-Spiti district, spread over 13,835 sq km, is a place of remote, untouched beauty with just 31,528 people. The climatic conditions are harsh as much of the land falls under a cold desert where the mercury drops below minus 20 degrees Celsius during winter. The Prime Minister had celebrated his first Diwali after coming in power in 2014 with soldiers posted in Siachen. In 2015, he was at the India-Pakistan border in Punjab.
Odisha creates 55,567 jobs in MSME sector Bhubaneswar, Oct 30 (IANS): The Odisha government has created 55,567 jobs through new Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by September this year, said an official on Sunday. The state government has set a target to generate 3.30 lakh jobs by setting up 66,000 new MSME units during 2016-17, and the MSME department has facilitated setting up 17,741 units to create 55,567 jobs by the end of September. said the official. The state government has drawn a district industries centre wise plan to achieve the objectives, but the department has failed to achieve the set target in 2015-16. While it had set a target to generate three lakh employment through 60,000 new MSMEs, it could only set up 53,895 units that created 1.75 lakh jobs in 201516, said the official. Meanwhile, the state government has decided to engage a project management agency for development MSME clusters in the state. There are about 1.5 million MSME units in the state providing jobs to 3.3 million people, said sources. Sources also added that entrepreneurs are facing problem to set up their MSME units as the national banks are not extending loans to them.
Migratory birds keep tryst with Kashmir Hokarsar (Srinagar), Oct 30 (IANS): Undeterred by the prolonged unrest in Kashmir, hundreds of migratory birds are reaching this wetland reserve daily to keep their annual tryst with the Valley. The avian visitors come to the Valley every year from far off Siberia, Eastern Europe, China, Japan and the Philippines to ward off the extreme cold of their summer homes. Despite the vicissitudes of its history, Kashmir has always provided a sanguine, peaceful environment to the migratory birds, who spend over five months in various water bodies of the Valley each year. “Early arrivals have already started. We have over 10,000 birds in this wetland reserve these days. The birds that arrived here first are the teals, mallards and gadwalls,” Kashmir Wildlife Warden (Wetlands) Rouf Zargar told IANS. “By the middle of November, we will have coots, pochards, pintails, wigeons and finally the greylag geese”, he added. Zargar said many birds of passage, like the cormorants and sandhill cranes, also spend some time in the Valley in early winter and early spring each year. “A bird of passage is a migratory bird that spends just a small period during its migration at a certain station,” Zargar said.
Hundreds of migratory birds are on its way to Kashmir. (Internet) 3 With an efficiency unmatched even by the best human navigators, the migratory birds travel thousands of miles between their winter and summer homes. “All the arduous travel is navigated by instinct. These visitors have fixed resting spots en route to their final destinations. “For example, thousands of these migratory birds spend a night or so at the mountain lakes of Gangabal, Vishensar and Gadsar each time they shuttle between their summer and winter homes,” said the warden. The extreme conditions of the travel undertaken by these birds, according to experts, can be judged by the fact that a greylag goose that weighs six pounds at the beginning of migration, weighs just three pounds on arrival.
“If the travel takes longer than scheduled or if the bird’s journey is halted by a snowstorm or other unfavorable weather conditions, after having lost all fat it had stored for sustaining the travel and its energy requirements, the bird starts losing its muscle which is often fatal,” Zargar pointed out. Maintaining the water bodies in the extremely difficult law and order situation is a challenge the department is finding hard to meet. “We are doing our best to maintain the optimum conditions inside water reserves. We have to build embankments to ensure that the water level is adequately maintained. Supervision and maintenance is an essential exercise to ensure that the avian visitors remain healthy and fit to feed and fend inside the water body,” Zargar explained.
Kerala: Gold coins for culling stray dogs Indian physicist feels vindicated on universe expansion study
THIRU V A N A N THAPURAM, OCT 30 (Agencies): The alumni association of a prominent college has announced gold coins to the civic authorities which would kill the maximum number of stray dogs till December 10 in Kerala where four persons have lost their lives and over 700 have been injured in canine attacks in the last four months. In the wake of increasing stray dog menace in the state, office bearers of Old Students Welfare Association of Pala-based St Thomas College said the “gift” would be given to the heads of panchayats and municipalities across the state where most stray dogs are killed. The outfit had hit head-
lines recently for providing air guns at subsidised rates to deal with violent dogs. Earlier, cash incentives were also offered by a state-based industrialist for culling dogs. “We are planning to give the gift to panchayat presidents and municipality chairmen in the state who lead in killing maximum number of stray dogs. Our aim is to ensure the safety of people from violent canines,” James Pambaykkal, Association General Secretary, said. Accusing the government of inactivity on the stray dog issue, he said the association was attempting to end the menace with the participation of people. The gold coins would be bought with the con-
tributions, collected from the representatives of the 1200 member-association, he said. The weight of the coins would be decided according to the total amount collected, James, a physics post-graduate who passed out from the college in 1984, said. He said the civic authorities, who apply for the gold coins, should submit day-to-day figures of the culled dogs. The stray dog issue in the state came into limelight again after the gruesome killing of 90-year-old Raghavan who was mauled to death by a pack of street dogs at Varkala on October 26.
Bengaluru, Oct 30 (IANS): Indian astrophysicist Abhas Mitra, whose revolutionary theories challenging the existence of “black holes” and “dark matter” remain uncontested till date, again feels vindicated. Mitra is former head of theoretical astrophysics at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and now adjunct professor at the Homi Bhabha National Institute in Mumbai. He says the prediction he made four years ago that the universe may not be undergoing accelerated expansion -- contradicting the view of mainstream cosmologists -- has now
found support from an independent study reported by physicists from Oxford University. Under the prevailing cosmological model, the universe created after the Big Bang is not just expanding, but the expansion is actually accelerating -- a discovery for which the Nobel Prize in Physics was given to three astronomers in 2011. This discovery was based on an analysis of “red shift” or unexpected “dimness” of light from supernovae -- the stunning thermonuclear explosion of dying stars -- picked up by the Hubble space telescope and large ground-based tele-
Abhas Mitra scopes. This reported “red shift” was attributed to the existence of a mysterious substance named ‘dark energy’ and led to widespread acceptance of the idea that the universe is dominated by this “Dark Energy”, driving its expansion with accelera-
tion. But in a series of peer reviewed publications since 2012, Mitra had shown that there is no dark energy at all and “must be an artifact for explaining a complex inhomogeneous universe by an oversimplified Big Bang model”. In his publications Mitra had shown that because there is no dark energy, there can be no acceleration of the universe. “But nobody listened to my exact theoretical results questioning the existence of the dark energy,” Mitra told this correspondent. That situation seems to have now changed with the publication of a new, more detailed, study by
Oxford University researchers in “Scientific Reports”, a sister publication of the reputed journal Nature. The Oxford team, led by Subir Sarkar, has also cast doubt on the standard cosmological concept of accelerating expansion of the universe, lending strong support to Mitra’s prediction. The researchers analyzed the emissions from a staggering 740 supernovae and concluded that the evidence for an accelerating universe is “flimsy”. They have admitted that their work “serves to demonstrate that a key pillar of the standard cosmological model is rather shaky”.

Cracking the whip
W
hether it can be described as a sign of boldness on the part of state chief minister T.R. Zeliang or just a something which he was compelled to do under extreme compulsion and also only with the fore knowledge and full backing of the party leadership’s organisation; the sacking of BJP legislator Mmhonlumo Kikon from the council of ministers has come as a surprise to many but not those within the innermost within the sanctum of power. The order issued by cabinet secretary and acting chief secretary R.B.Thong IAS did not mention any reason(s) for removing Mmhonlumo and was it mandatory. What is known is that Mmhonlumo was among three of the four BJP legislators who had backed the NPF majority group (21 out of 36) who had demanded change of legislature party leadership. On the other hand the lone minister of the BJP remained with the NPF legislature led by chief minister T.R. Zeliang (15 out of 36). Since the demand for change of leadership emerged within the dominant party the NPF; it should have been resolved within the party’s legislature. Anyway, the internal matter/crisis within NPF was made into a DAN issue where alliance partners got themselves involved in who the NPF legislature party leader should be. As a consequence of non-NPF getting involved in the internal affairs of the NPF when seven of the eight independent; eight Congress and one each from JD (U) and NCP legislators eventually saved the day for the beleaguered T.R. Zeliang government. What began as an inner party move for change of leadership evolved into a free-for-all mustering of majority in the house that transcended beyond the boundaries of the ruling alliance when the opposition Congress also took the bait to opt for the minority T.R. Zeliang government after languishing in the opposition bench for ten years. After the trust vote on February 5, 2015 all members of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (59 excluding the Speaker) voted in favour of the government headed by chief minister T.R. Zeliang. The reconciliation within NPF has cast doubts when two MLAs including former chief minister and Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio were suspended by the party. Whether it was a post-suspension or simply a strategy to send a strong message to known or suspected dissidents is not known but one can say that it has only solidified the schism that lies exposed. Now the sacking of the BJP legislator could be taken as a bold move by the chief minister T.R. Zeliang. That cannot be ignored since the sacking is certain to raise hackles in some section of the BJP. There have been only two instances where two ministers were sacked in the past. However, the recent episode has nothing to do with conduct or corruption. It is also indicative of the intolerance to dissent within NPF and which does not auger well. Having said that, what now needs to be looked into is how T.R. Zeliang will respond to public about various issues. Press statements alone cannot hide the fact that the ruling government has cannot justify some decisions. On the other hand, it would be extremely fantastic if the government takes action against some very corrupt bureaucrats so as to send a strong message across. But unfortunately, corruption does not appear to be an offence anymore.
DailyDevotion Faith Without faith it is impossible to please Him… —Hebrews 11:6 Faith in active opposition to common sense is mistaken enthusiasm and narrow-mindedness, and common sense in opposition to faith demonstrates a mistaken reliance on reason as the basis for truth. The life of faith brings the two of these into the proper relationship. Common sense and faith are as different from each other as the natural life is from the spiritual, and as impulsiveness is from inspiration. Nothing that Jesus Christ ever said is common sense, but is revelation sense, and is complete, whereas common sense falls short. Yet faith must be tested and tried before it becomes real in your life. “We know that all things work together for good…” (Romans 8:28) so that no matter what happens, the transforming power of God’s providence transforms perfect faith into reality. Faith always works in a personal way, because the purpose of God is to see that perfect faith is made real in His children. For every detail of common sense in life, there is a truth God has revealed by which we can prove in our practical experience what we believe God to be. Faith is a tremendously active principle that always puts Jesus Christ first. The life of faith says, “Lord, You have said it, it appears to be irrational, but I’m going to step out boldly, trusting in Your Word” (for example, see Matthew 6:33). Turning intellectual faith into our personal possession is always a fight, not just sometimes. God brings us into particular circumstances to educate our faith, because the nature of faith is to make the object of our faith very real to us. Until we know Jesus, God is merely a concept, and we can’t have faith in Him. But once we hear Jesus say, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9) we immediately have something that is real, and our faith is limitless. Faith is the entire person in the right relationship with God through the power of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.

Cyber frauds rob Indian banks of $ 4 bn a year
T
he bankers’ recent move to put a check on 3.2 crore credit and debit cards have sent alarm bells ringing across the country. It was done to curb cyber frauds on the banking system. The move also exposes how insecure the online banking is. Credit/ debit card frauds are rising across the globe and cyber experts say India is one of the most vulnerable. The system does not have the exact numbers of the victims but it definitely is in millions. It includes the elite class, journalists, lawyers, senior officials, students and who not. The mobile banking is stated to be more vulnerable. Another easy and novel method to defraud is to call up people in the name of largely a private bank, ICICI, and say that they want to transfer some amount to their cards. In the name of verifying card numbers they seek all the vital data and people have found that soon after money has been swindled away from their accounts. The phone numbers are never accessible after the fraud. Many such numbers are stated to be based in Maharashtra, though the police say these are linked to international network and
“difficult to trace”. India is stated to be less prepared to meet it. The police are reluctant to register FIRs saying the card holders themselves are responsible as they share card details. It shows the lack of preparedness to check the massive banking fraud. The banks have shown their laxity in giving large loans that have added up to over Rs 10 lakh crore NPAs and now lack of steps to check cyber frauds may shatter trust in the system. Banks are fully liable to any loss to the customer and the banks must compensate them. While banks like ICICI and others have failed to realize the bad loans, they have now started penalizing the card holders for extreme trivialities like delay in payment by a day or two. But when they keep excess amount for over 40 days, they do not pay the card holders a penny. The banks in many cases are acting irresponsibly. Their customer care numbers are difficult to access. They do not give emails for making complaints. Their CEOs do not respond and branches say they do not have mechanism to receive complaints. Indeed it is strange
that the banking system did not listen to the wake-up call that emanated from the heist of a Bangladeshi bank in February 2016. Cyber thieves attempted to transfer $ 951 million and successfully transferred $ 81 million to a bank in The Phillippines, never to be traced again. It sent shock waves across the global banking community, Shivaji both for the amount of money that was swindled and how the heist leveraged the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) system, the backbone of international finance. The recent data breach is being probed by National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI), a RBI wing. But NPCI seemingly does not have the numbers that has affected the people at large. It says the complaints of fraudulent withdrawals are limited to cards of 19 banks and 641 customers as their ATM linked to the service providers’ swtitch were compromised. But there are reports that over 85,000 sites in India have faced external attacks in the last four years or so, related to core government, academic, banking or even science
institutions. The success of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India depends on cyber security. The continued adoption of alternate channels such as ATMs, kiosks, internet, mobile, cloud, and social media technologies have increased opportunities for attackers, as also the increasing trend towards outsourcing, Sarkar offshoring, and thirdparty contracting, which may have further diluted institutional control over IT systems and access points. Cyber criminals have demonstrated their ability to exploit online financial and market systems that interface with the internet automated clearing house (ACH) systems, card payments and market trades. They put a skimmer in an ATM to collect card and personal identification numbers (PIN). Similarly, point of sales terminals (POS) and mobile phone systems are targeted for stealing personally identifiable information (PII). This has compromised millions of cards across the globe. In reality, as of now digital transactions are neither secure nor secret. Even reports say Aadhar num-
bers are compromised and misused. The Chinese National Security Council, with its 1.25 lakh cyber security experts, is stated to be a potential challenge to India’s cyber security, says Cheri McGuire, vice president, global government affairs and cyber security policy, Symantec Corporation. In contrast, India has a mere 556 cyber security experts. If hackers managed to destroy India’s bank data, there would be financial chaos. As per the RBI, India’s banking system is worth $190 billion, ranking it third largest among the BRICS countries and 15th in the world. A financial disruption wouldn’t allow people to get their money, know whether they had it or if they had made payments. At stake is India’s US$ 2.1 trillion GDP, power grids, telecommunication lines, air traffic control, the banking system and all computer-dependent enterprises. Cheri says, the year 2014 saw 317 million malware variants globally or nearly 1 million new malware daily. In India, “We saw targeted attacks in businesses dealing with critical infrastructure par-
Post-mortem
KU appreciates Rio for adopting Longwa as ‘Adarsh Gram’
T
he Office of the Konyak Union (KU) extends its utmost appreciation to the Hon’ble Member of Parliament (MP) Shri. Niephieu Rio and the Governor of Nagaland Shri. PB Acharya for adopting Longwa village as MP model Village under Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojna (SAGY) which was officially launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri. Narender Modi on the birth anniversary of Jayaprakash Narayan, on 11th Oct 2014. Longwa village is one of the Pongyin/Pongwen Village amongst the Konyak where its Anghdom spreads across Myanmar and Arunachal Pradesh. Interestingly, the international border that cuts through the village had never been accepted by the people of the village living on either side. The Angh House which is situated right at the border signifies and symbolizes its state of
dominion till date. Today, Longwa is one of the most attracted tourist destination where 100s of tourist flock in annually. Interestingly, Longwa village was once declared as International trade centre (ITC) between India and Myanmar however, there is no sign of investment or development on the so-called ITC site till date. The Konyak Union (KU) in-tuned with the Governor’s press statement, places its quires before the state Government as to why the proposed ITC project at Longwa is left unattended with just a glimpse of a torn tin roof. The office of the Konyak Union (KU), hereby appeals the State Government to immediately execute its project in-tune with the act east policy of the nation without delay. Today, the adoption of Longwa village as Adarsh Gram or a model village had been considered as a right-
ful initiative in promoting cultural ties and tourism in the region. Longwa village is also a unique amongst all other Indian Villages needs special attention and investment from both the State and the Central Govt. Only through efficient investment, the proposed ITC project can be materialized. Such venture would clearly mark its concept upon the Look/act east policy of the central Government. While contemplating upon the objective of the scheme (Sansad adarsh gram Yojna, that aims to ensure “holistic development” of identified villages in all aspects – personal, human, social, economy and environmental development as well as provision of basic amenities and services, social security and good governance, the Office of the Konyak Union (KU) also aspires that in accordance to the contours of the Scheme, all schools in Longwa should be felici-
tated with Smart Schools, Pucca Houses for the homeless, universal access to basic health facilities, universal PDS for eligible families, e-governance, etc. such noble investment/ initiative would definitely foster up in bridging up a great divide that exist in our society today. One major factor which needs to be applauded is that the Scheme lays emphases on “personal development” by inculcating “hygienic behavior”, “Physical exercise”, “reducing risk behavior”, including alcoholism, smoking and substance abuse. Hence the Konyak Union (KU) extends its utmost support to our noble initiator Shri. Neiphieu Rio, the Hon’ble Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) in cradling up his dream project in a small corner of a Konyak soil. S. Manlip Konyak, President & Honang Konyak, General Secretary
Celebrating the 499th anniversary of Reformation
T
he 16th Century Reformation sought to reform the Roman Catholic Church which resulted in the establishment of Protestantism. Even before the German monk Martin Luther came on the scene, there were men who stood for the true gospel and had to suffer severe repercussion. John Wycliff, an English theologian and Oxford professor was condemned as a heretic in 1415. John Hus, a priest from Bohemia was burned at the stake in 1415 for his opposition to the Church of Rome; also an Italian friar named Girolamo Savonarola was hanged and burned in 1498. These are citations of a few faithful martyrs for the true faith. The climax of Reformation took place in the 16th century in the person of Martin Luther. At this time, the Church was at its lowest ebb. The selling of indulgences was openly practiced. The purportedly idea of souls in purgatory being freed in paying a huge amount of money was taught. It was said: “As soon as the penny jingles into the money-box, the soul flies out (of purgatory).” This ideology of buying one’s way into the kingdom of God was outrageously opposed by Martin Luther in his 95 Theses. Along with this, the monopoly of papacy, the teachings of faith plus works equal to
salvation, equalizing the humanbased traditions with Scriptures were some of the thorns in the flesh of Martin Luther. This sketch of the 16th century Reformation will be obvious and familiar to many readers. But the fact of the matter is: Martin Luther’s work of 95 Theses which was nailed on the door of castle Church in Wittenberg dated 1517 commemorated the initiation of the Protestant Reformation. In this 95 Theses, Luther boldly pulled down the curtains of superstitions, exposed the superficial façade of papacy orders and the lies of human traditions. He firmly engraved the sufficiency of the Scriptures for faith and salvation of every individual who trust in Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9). At this farce step of Luther, the Roman Catholic authority responded fiercely. Luther was put on trial before the Church and the court forced him to recant. Luther did not back down and made this famous proclamation: “I cannot choose but adhere to the Word of God, which has possession of my conscience; nor can I possibly, nor will I even make any recantation, since it is neither safe nor honest to act contrary to conscience! Here I stand; I cannot do otherwise, so help me God! Amen.” Now, the core value of Protestant reformation revolves
around these “Five Solas”(Sola is a Latin word meaning “Alone”). The five quintessential doctrine of the Protestant doctrine are hanged on these Solas: Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone), Sola Gracia (Grace alone), Sola Fide (Faith alone), SolusChristus (In Christ alone), and Soli Deo Gloria (For the Glory of God alone). In the year 1521, Pope Leo X excommunicated Luther from the Catholic Church and declared him a heretic. Death warrant was issued against Luther. However, God’s mercy came to his rescue in the person of Prince Frederick of Saxony. In the castle of Frederick, Luther began his translation work of the Latin Bible into German language. At the end of ten years, the work was finally completed. The word “Protestant” was a popular term identifying the supporters of Luther who stood against the Church of its malpractices and corruptions. Martin Luther died in the year 1546 and his 95 Theses gave the bedrock foundation for what we know today as the Protestant Reformation. As we celebrate the 499th anniversary of Reformation, May we remember the past saints and reformers who gave their life and sacrifice for our faith and heritage. Happy Reformation Day! ticularly in financial sector, communication, transportation – thus underpinning the national security and economy. Among these attacks, 60 percent were on large enterprises”.Some Indian experts say that cyber system within the country is secure but the SWIFT and other international gateways have problems. Money in the modern world is just an entry on a computer rather than gold and hard currency. According to a rough estimation, every year India is subjected to $ 4 billion loss due to cyber attacks, a majority of which is stated to originate from China. Cyber security is less debated, sporadically written about, and rumoured at best in India. Because of this apathy and despite India’s grand stature in the cyber world, India is vulnerable to the cyber snarls. The government needs to restrict the individual account/card holders, the most vulnerable, from dealing in cyber transactions for 90 days. Large houses should be asked to transact through banks. During this time foolproof system should be created. Prevention is better than cure despite some jerks in the system.
Rejoinder to ‘Assam Rifles claims’
W
ith reference to the shooting incident on Oct 23, 2016 in the Okotso area, I wish to give the following rejoinder to the Assam Rifles denial of occupying the Church and its guest house at Mekokla village and deriding our protests as “A blatant lie.” 1. Whether it was a joint operation or not we do not know, but the facts are very clear that on the night of 22nd October 2016, there were two Assam Rifles (A.R.) operations in the Okotso area of the Lotha region. One of these two parties arrived at Okotso village and slept in the village Community Hall. The other party came and occupied the Church at Mekokla village. We can also believe that some of the troops who stayed at Okotso village were Christians and did not desecrate the Church premises of Okotso village. We are not protesting against this A.R. group who bivouacked at the Okotso Village because they were doing their own duties which we cannot object to. 2. Our protest is however with the A.R. group who entered and occupied the Church premises at Mekokla Baptist Church on the same night of October 22, 2016 and even said all those arrogant words to the Pastor of the Church when he protested. As for this incident, the Lotha Baptist Church Council had made an on the spot verification before the protest was registered in the local papers. Please therefore do not use one incident to cover up the crimes of the other incident with so many religious and Christian words of piety. Kaka D. Iralu

Sir,
Respect teachers’ agitation
The teachers fraternity who are denied of their rightful daily wages for Seven and Eight months, yet the aspiration and hope are not reduced. But is this not a serious crime being committing by the government and department of School Education, while the implementing agencies are propagating for quality education. What can a country expect from the Teachers at this rate without any wages. It is painful to see many hardworking teachers being made like beggars due to non payment of salaries for the last 7-8 months. As a lady teacher and Mother it makes me to think over and over again, why because I was by default posted in my own native village where I can somehow survive and manage my day to day life but for fellow teachers who are posted at Town and to other remote villages, I wonder how they manage their live as we all know the era where we live need a penny for every single day. The profession of teachers who are supposed to be one of the most respected profession, is now considered the most embarrassing profession as the teacher no longer effort to feed themselves and are left bankrupt. As the festive seasons comes closer and schools nearing final exams, the teachers with no option left resort to resentment towards the government’s unfaithful attitude towards the teachers’ community. It may sound awkward and the teacher fraternity knowing that we will be warned with intimation and threat from many agencies but we felt our sentiments should also be respected, as we continue serving sincerely without wages for nearly a year. And we too have tools to defend and justify our plea. I wish every single individual and specially student organizations comes forward to rescue both the students and teachers. Because it is our collective responsibility to bring up the children’s education and we as teachers cannot go on surviving on empty stomach. As a suffering and marginalized employee of a government it is a humble appeal to all the citizens, student communities and parents that the teachers resorting to any agitations be respected. Though it contrary act to our professional ethics, we are committed to No Pay No Work and agreed with no work no pay. Aya Kath, Hindi Teacher, Tseminyu

USSC serves ultimatum Okotso firing: NPMHR hits back at AR on School Education
D IMAPUR , O C T 3 0 (NPN): United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC) Sunday served 15day ultimatum on the department of school education for creation of SDEO office at Longkhim. USSC executive secretary Yangdipi Sangtam in a press statement cautioned the government that failure to respond on their demand, the conference will take its own course of action and any untoward incidence; the government will be solely held responsible. The conference blamed the state government of failing to meet their demand even after the department in its order dated November 14, 2014 had approved their demand and proposal. It had also submitted memorandum to minister of school education and chief minister last year on the issue. USSC said that on the directive of director of school education it had arranged temporary building for SDEO office at Long-
khim, as it was not possible to construct new building immediately at that time. The government also assured them that it would arrange teachers under Longkhim-Chare as SDEO staff for a time being and for which USSC said it was paying the rent regularly for the last two years for the said office. Since, the assurance was not fulfilled, USSC said it resorted and launched a phase wise agitation. However, the agitation was temporarily suspended after minister of school education intervened with a written assurance on June 4, 2016, that their demand would be taken up in restructuring and revamping of the department which was in progress. But after a lapse of five months, there has been no positive response from the department despite cooperation extended by the USSC. Therefore, USSC appealed to the department to take cognizance of the demand.

And in the judgement (NPMHR and others Vs union on Febr uar y 14, 1983), the Supreme Court

Dubai, Oct 30 (PTI): India is expected to see a significant uptick in mobile subscriptions, broadband and connectivity with almost a billion unique mobile subscribers expected by 2020, marking a period of rapid development of the country’s mobile economy, a new study has revealed. The new report, ‘The Mobile Economy: India 2016’ by GSMA Intelligence, noted that at the end of June 2016, 616 million unique users had subscribed to mobile services in India, making it the second-largest mobile market globally. India also overtook the US in 2016 to become the world’s second-largest smartphone market with an installed base of 275 million devices. New Delhi, Oct 30 (PTI): Gold prices drifted lower by Rs 100 to Rs 30,650 per 10 grams in special ‘Diwali Muhurat’ trading at the bullion market today in the absence of worthwhile activity. However, silver held steady at Rs 43,000 per kg on scattered buying support from industrial units and coin makers. Traders attributed the fall in gold prices to absence of activity as jewellers kept buying restricted. They, however, added that token buying activity on the auspicious occasion of ‘Diwali’ and the beginning of Hindu Samvat Year 2073 capped the fall. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent purity fell by Rs 100 each to Rs 30,650 and Rs 30,500 per 10 grams respectively. It had gained Rs 160 yesterday. Sovereign, however, remained steady at Rs 24,500 per piece of eight gram. On the other hand, silver ready ended flat at Rs 43,000 per kg. Silver weekly-based delivery followed suit and finished at its previous level of Rs 42,540 per kg. Silver coins also remained unaltered at Rs 74,000 for buying and Rs 75,000 for selling of 100 pieces.

However, when it found that not many customers changed their PINs in response to the SMSs sent, the bank decided to block these cards (read: How did the crisis unfold). Customers who approached their respective bank branch in mid-October were told that it will take a fortnight to a month to get their cards replaced, adding to the account holders’ frustration. The customers, however, are delighted to get the cards sooner than expected. Nidhi, a teacher from Delhi, had earlier told TOI that she was caught unawares by the card-blocking exercise. “I had applied for a new debit card on October 19 and I got it yesterday.” Agarwal said the bank did not wait for its customers to apply for a new one, but instead got the replacement request generated on the back-end. The bank also made the process of generating a PIN easy. “The customer has to send an SMS with account number or card number to a predefined number. The customer gets a temporary password, which can be used once. After the first transaction, the customer is required to change it.

E-cigs banned in check-in bags over air safety concerns NEW DELHI, Oct 30 (Agencies): After Samsung Galaxy Note 7 and 2, electronic cigarettes have emerged as the new fiery fear for air safety. India on Saturday banned the item in check-in bags, while reiterating that the inflight smoking ban extends to the estick as well. This means smokers will have to carry them in hand bags, but not smoke or charge them in aircraft. Giving the reason for the ban on checking-in this item, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) says: “International Air Transport Association in their guidance on e-cigarettes notes that ‘several incidents have been reported involving electronic cigarettes overheating by way of their heating element being accidentally activated, resulting in a fire in checked baggage’.” It adds that “spare lithium batteries and e-cigarettes must be put in carry-on bags. In addition, recharging of e-cigarettes and/or batteries on board the aircraft is not permitted.”
that Mistry’s removal was not illegal but was done in the ‘long term’ interest of the company and as per Articles of Principles. The Tatas also termed Mistry’s letter ‘unforgivable’, a political drama and an emotional outburst. Meanwhile, Ratan Tata, taking over as the interim chairman of the company on Tuesday asked CEOs of group firms to focus on their business and not be distracted by the change in top leadership. The interim boss also asked all the CEOs to concentrate on enhancing returns to shareholders and then appointed Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) CEO & MD N Chandrasekaran as additional directors into the board of holding company.
PUNE, Oct 30 (Agencies): Over 6 lakh customers of State Bank of India (SBI) will get fresh debit cards soon as the bank moved swiftly to contain the damage caused by a recent malware-related security breach. It has been dubbed as the biggest card replacement exercise in the history of Indian banking. Over 6.29 lakh cards have been dispatched already. “A total of 95.5% of the total blocked cards were dispatched by October 26. For the rest, we are trying to get their addresses and contact details because they failed to update their info with the respective branch,” Manju Agarwal, deputy Managing Director, Corporate Strategy & New Business, SBI, told TOI. “Such customers can also approach the branch to get their details updated and get a new card,” he added. The TOI had reported on October 19 that the SBI had blocked over 6 lakh cards following a malwarerelated security breach in a non-SBI ATM network. It subsequently came to light that as many as 32 lakh cards from 19 different banks have been hit by the breach. Not all banks, however, blocked their customers’ cards, but instead sent out messages to change the four-digit ATM PIN immediately. Even the SBI did not block its customers’ cards

with 18.4 percent share. In one of the biggest shocking news that took the corporate world by surprise, Cyrus Mistry was on October 24 removed as the chairman of Tata Sons. No credible reason was given by the Tatas about the sacking of Mistry, a move which the ousted chairman termed as ‘shocking’ and ‘illegal’. Following his removal, Mistry wrote an explosive five-page letter wherein he accused Ratan Tata of interfering in decision makings of the company and pushing him into the status of a ‘lame duck’ chairman. In the letter, Mistry termed his removal as illegal and said that he was “shocked beyond words at the happenings at the board meeting of October 24, 2016”. Tatas hit back stating

Saudi-led raid kills 60 at Yemen prison
Rebel rockets kill 38 civilians in Aleppo: Monitor A L E P P O, O C T 3 0 (Agencies): Syria’s regime and rebels were locked in fierce clashes on Sunday on the western edges of Aleppo, where 38 civilians have been killed in two days of opposition rocket fire, a monitor said. Among those killed over the two-day period were 14 children, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Another 250 civilians have been wounded in heavy bombardment by anti-government factions since Friday morning, according to the Britain-based group. The barrage is part of a major assault by rebels and allied militants to break a three-month government siege of Aleppo’s eastern half, where more than 250,000 people still live. “Rebel fighters have launched hundreds of rockets and shells onto the western districts from positions inside the city and on its western edges,” said Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman.

while others remained stuck under the rubble. One of the strikes directly targeted the building, the witness added, bringing it down over the heads of the prisoners, while two others hit the gate of the complex and nearby administration buildings. A spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The air attack was one of the deadliest among thousands of bombings

Italy quake: Powerful tremor near Norcia destroys buildings No r cia , O ct 3 0 (Agencies): A strong earthquake has struck near Norcia in central Italy, destroying numerous buildings. It comes nearly two months after a major earthquake killed almost 300 people and destroyed several towns. The quake early on Sunday measured 6.6, larger than August’s quake and aftershocks last week. It is thought to be Italy’s most violent in decades. At least 11 people have been hurt but no deaths are reported so far. Many locals left after last week’s quakes. Nine people have been pulled alive from the rubble, Italian media say. Tremors were felt in the capital Rome, and as
far away as Venice in the north. It was at a depth of only 1.5km (0.9 miles). The US Geological Survey said the epicentre of the quake was 68km southeast of the regional centre of Perugia and close to the small town of Norcia. Monks at the monastery of San Benedetto, an international Benedictine community in Norcia, tweeted an image of the Basilica of St Benedict destroyed by the earthquake. “The monks are all safe, but our hearts go immediately to those affected, and the priests of the monastery are searching for any who may need the Last Rites,” the monks said later in a statement.

Lo n do n, O ct 3 0 (IANS): Oceans may be responsible for making the Earth move in and out of ice ages every 100,000 years, finds a study. According to the study published in the journal Geology, oceans sucking carbon dioxide (CO2) out of the atmosphere may have triggered this phenomena. Dubbed the “100,000year problem”, this phenomena has been occurring for the past million years or so and leads to vast ice sheets covering North America, Europe and Asia. By studying the chemical make-up of tiny fossils on the ocean floor, the team discovered that there was more CO2 stored in the deep ocean during the ice age periods at regular intervals every 100,000 years. This suggested that extra carbon dioxide was being pulled from the atmosphere and into the oceans at this time, subsequently lowering the temperature on the Earth and enabling vast ice sheets to engulf the Northern Hemisphere.
Seoul, OCT 30 (Agencies): South Korean President Park Geun-hye has accepted the resignations of her top presidential aides, including the chief of staff, the presidential office has said, amid a deepening political crisis. Sunday’s departure of the top presidential officials comes as Park is grappling with a recent influence-peddling scandal involving an old friend, Choi Soon-sil. Choi returned to South Korea from Germany on Sunday as the political crisis engulfed Park over allegations that she allowed Choi to use her friendship to exert improper influence and benefit personally. Jeong Yeon-guk, a spokesman for the presidential office, announced on Sunday that three long-time Park aides had also stepped down. Park has been facing calls to reshuffle her office and cabinet after acknowledging on Tuesday she provided long-time friend Choi Soon-sil drafts of her speeches for editing. There’s also media speculation that Choi, who holds no government job, meddled in government

can have so much influence over the state of affairs.” The resignations come after thousands of South Koreans hit the streets on Saturday evening calling for Park to step down. Holding candles and signs reading “Who’s the real president?” and “Park Geun-hye step down,” the protesters marched through downtown Seoul after holding a candlelight vigil near City Hall. Police estimated about 9,000 people turned out for the biggest anti-government demonstration in Seoul in months. “Park has lost her authority as president and showed she doesn’t have the basic qualities to govern a country,” Jae-myung Lee, from the opposition Minjoo Party and the mayor of the city of Seongnam, told the protesters from a stage. Despite Sunday’s resignations, there are still more protests planned over the next few days, Fawcett reported. Park’s ruling party has also considered calling for a national unity government, which would effectively sideline their own president.

HODEIDAH, OCT 30 (Agencies): Arab coalition warplanes bombed a security complex near the Yemeni port city of Hodeidah, killing 60 people including inmates of a prison on the site, a regional official, relatives and medical sources said on Sunday. The prison in the city’s al-Zaydiyah district was holding 84 inmates when it was struck three times late on Saturday, Hashem alAzizi, deputy governor of the Houthi rebel-controlled Hodeidah province of the same name, told Reuters. Local officials said the site lies within a security complex for the area guarded by Houthi militiamen but that only prison security guards were present during the night-time air strike. The Saudi-led coalition has been fighting Yemen’s armed Houthi movement since March 2015 to try to restore the internationally recognized President AbdRabbu Mansour Hadi, who was driven into exile by the Iran-allied group in late 2014. A Reuters witness at the security complex said the entire building was destroyed and medics pulled about 17 bodies away - many of them missing limbs -

ritish singer Adele is planning to get engaged to long-term boyfriend Simon Konecki after five years and one son together. The star is said to have quietly agreed to marry Konecki, the father of her son Angelo, reports mirror.co.uk. “They’ve decided it’s the right time to think about making that step. They won’t make a big song and dance about it, that’s not the way either of them are, and you won’t see Adele walking around with a huge diamond on her finger flaunting it,” said a friend. “But they’re ready to take the next step and both very excited about the prospect. Adele has had an amazing time on tour and is enjoying performing to fans -- but she’s looking forward to spending some quiet time at home with her family after 10 months on the road,” the friend added.

he cover of the picture book Charlie the Choo-Choo by Beryl Evans, illustrated by Ned Dameron, is splayed with a glowing blurb from horror great Stephen King: “If I were ever to write a children’s book, it would be just like this!” Normally, we’d do well to take book blurbs with a grain of salt, but this one couldn’t be more true. That’s because King did write Charlie the ChooChoo, under the pen name Beryl Evans. In fact, both the book and Evans appear in the third installment of King’s
Dark Tower series, The Waste Lands, published in 1991. In true King fashion, the anthropomorphized train, Charlie, ranges from spooky to dolorous throughout the book. Even cheery Charlie, hard at work as a locomotive and besties with his engineer Bob, seems a bit, well, off. For one thing, he has so many pointy teeth that Little Red Riding Hood would feel compelled to comment on them. In The Waste Lands, Jake Chambers buys the book at a bookstore called the Manhattan Restaurant of the Mind and reads it. Despite the positive depiction of Charlie, he reacts with suspicion: “Jake found that he did not trust the smile on Charlie the Choo-Choo’s face. You look happy, but I think that’s just the mask you wear, he thought.”

sure back on to the champions earlier on Saturday as Cristiano Ronaldo hit a hat-trick in a 4-1 win at Alaves. Luis Enrique’s men were hardly emphatic in
response as Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez drew a rare collective blank. It was left to Rafinha to continue his quietly impressive goalscoring form in the Spanish top flight this season – the Brazilian midfielder’s acrobatic volley early in the second half his fifth in six league games. Granada remain winless, with three points from 10 matches, and showed limited ambition throughout, but coach Lucas Alcaraz will at least take solace that a repeat of the 7-1 thumping at Atletico Madrid earlier this month was avoided and never appeared to be on the cards. Luis Enrique continues to grapple with a lengthy injury list and made three changes from last weekend’s dramatic 3-2 win at Valencia, with Denis Suarez in for injured captain Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets rested on the bench ahead of Tues-
‘India has infrastructure, not enough coaches’ Bengaluru, Oct 30 (PTI): Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal today said India has adequate infrastructure for badminton but don’t have enough coaches and academies. “There is no problem on infrastructure front, but what we don’t have enough number of academies and coaches, like the Chinese have,” she told PTI. Saina has been practising here after recovering from a knee injury which had affected her progress at Rio Olympics. She had lost her second group match against Ukraine’s Maria Ulitina to crash out of the mega event. “India should at least have 20 to 30 coaches in major cities of the country. Unfortunately, though we have at the most two to three coaches,” said the 26-year-old, who is eyeing a comeback at the China Super Series Premier (November 15-20) and Hong Kong Open Super Series (November 22-27). “What we don’t have enough is the number of players and academies. If you see China, there are 30,000 to 40,000 players in cities there. They have four

to five coaches for every event and that is how they produce champions. “You can never underestimate China because they can anytime produce champions. It is very easy for them because they have number of players and coaches with them,” she added. Saina said other associations including the Badminton Association of India (BAI) are working on making their sports as big as cricket, which the BCCI did wonderfully well. “Cricket did not become big in two or three days. It took lot of time for them also to be here. I salute the Board of Control for Cricket in India because they have made the game so
big. Other associations are working on it, I feel,” said Saina, who won bronze at London Olympics. Saina said BAI has been doing a good job by conducting Premier Badminton League, which inspired many to take up badminton. “I definitely feel BAI has been doing wonderful job by conducting PBL, which has inspired people to take up badminton. Ten years back, we saw only two or three players, now we have many players playing the sport, and hence there is an improvement there. It will happen slowly, though,” she said. Praising the Indian government’s initiative to promote sports, Saina hoped such support should be extended for next two to three Olympics. “As far as badminton is concerned, we are getting very good support from the Government of India. I hope that support continues for another two to three Olympics to get right players and team, besides a good support staff including coaches. It will help a lot players in all sports,” she said.
day’s Champions League trip to Manchester City. Barca’s feted front three were all present and correct – Luis Suarez having received the European Golden Shoe for his exploits last season before kick-off – and Messi had a seventh-minute shot blocked. The hosts were struggling to turn their possession into clear chances by the time Neymar steered an angled attempt off target in the 19th minute, while Ivan Rakitic glanced wide from a Messi centre shortly afterwards. Luis Suarez looked to bear down on goal but a poor first touch allowed goalkee per Guiller mo Ochoa and the Granada defence to smother the danger. Guillermo pushed a low 25-yard shot to safety from Luis Suarez 10 minutes from the end of a half where he might have expected to be much busier.
Barcelona eye permanent deal for defender Marlon Rio de Janeiro, Oct 30 (IANS): Catalan football giants Barcelona are set to secure Brazilian center-back Marlon on a permanent deal, according to media reports. Marlon has impressed with the Barcelona B team since leaving Brazilian club Fluminense on a six-month loan in June, reports Xinhua. A spate of injuries has prompted the Catalan club’s head coach Luis Enrique to call up Marlon to the firstteam squad. The 21-year-old was an unused substitute in Barcelona’s 1-0 home victory over Granada in La Liga on Saturday. He is also expected to be included in the Blaugrana squad for their trip to Manchester City in the Champions League in Tuesday. Brazil’s Lance news portal said the deal between Fluminense and Barcelona included a clause that allows the latter to secure Marlon on a permanent deal for two million euros ($2.19 million).

World champion Australia have already won the ICC Women’s Championship and with it became the first side to book a ticket for next year’s World Cup, while England, West Indies, New Zealand, South Africa, India and Pakistan are fighting for the remaining three automatic spots in the pinnacle women’s 50-over event.

Reds beat Palace to stay among EPL pacesetters
Roberto Firmino (right) celebrates with Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane after scoring Liverpool’s fourth goal.
LO N D O N, O c t 3 0 (Agencies): Liverpool kept pace with Premier League top two Manchester City and Arsenal with a dramatic 4-2 success at Crystal Palace on Saturday. A breathless first half saw both sides take advantage of defensive errors, with Palace twice levelling through James McArthur after Liverpool took the lead with goals from Emre Can and Dejan Lovren. Joel Matip’s 44th-minute header gave the visitors a half-time advantage and Roberto Firmino’s secondhalf effort secured a win that left Jurgen Klopp’s men behind City and Arsenal on goal difference. While the Merseysiders’ vibrant display show-
cased their attacking talents -- assisted by a generous Palace defence -- lapses at the back again raised questions about their ability to sustain their title challenge. Liverpool have kept just one clean sheet in 10 league games this season and Lovren’s failings in particular complicated what should have been a routine victory. Initially the game had the look of an uneven contest when a typically incisive move, orchestrated by Philippe Coutinho, brought about Can’s opening goal after 16 minutes. Coutinho picked out left-back Alberto Moreno, whose volleyed cross was turned home by Can with a first-time shot from 10 yards. Already things looked bleak
for Pardew’s side, but within two minutes they were gifted a route back into the game. A long clearance by Palace goalkeeper Steve Mandanda was headed on by former Liverpool striker Christian Benteke. The flick should have been dealt with comfortably by Liverpool’s centrebacks, but Matip squared for Lovren, whose mishit, looping pass allowed McArthur to nip in and head the ball over the advancing Loris Karius. That was the first time Palace had threatened and should have given the home side the chance to settle into the game. Instead, they were undone in similarly routine fashion in the 21st minute
India reclaim Asian Champions Trophy
Kuantan, Oct 30 (PTI): Favourites India prevailed 3-2 over archrivals Pakistan to reclaim the Asian Champions Trophy hockey, presenting a perfect Diwali gift to the nation here today. Goals from Rupinder Pal Singh (18th minute), Yousuf Affan (23rd) and Nikkin Thimmaiah (51st) helped India surmount the challenge from Pakistan, who rallied from two goals behind through strikes by Muhammad Aleem Bilal (26th) and Ali Shaan (38th) in the title clash of the fourth edition of tournament.
This was the first time the teams were meeting in the final of a continental tournament since India dethroned Pakistan as the Asian Games champions in Incheon, South Korea in 2014. India had won the inaugural edition of the Asian Champions Trophy by defeating Pakistan in the final in 2011. Pakistan reversed the result in the title contest the next year and went on to retain it in 2013 by defeating Japan in the final. World No. 6 India were the favourites going into the tournament,
but were without several seasoned players who had been rested to recuperate from injuries. India went into the title contest at the Kuantan Hockey Stadium without ace custodian PR Sreejesh, who was rested due to pulled hamstring and Akash Chikte took the position under the bar. India earned their first penalty corner in the seventh minute, but failed to make it count. Ace flicker Rupinder was on the spot, but Jasjit Singh Kular was allowed to take the shot in a tactical move. Jasjit’s shot went wide of the left and posed no threat.
when Lovren made amends for his error by easily rising above Palace skipper Scott Dann to head past Mandanda from Coutinho’s corner. The move was familiar: a ball lifted towards Benteke, whose headed flick found Wilfried Zaha wide on the right. When the winger delivered a cross towards the near post Lovren was flat-footed and McArthur nipped ahead of him to head home. Fortunately for Klopp’s side they were facing an equally vulnerable side whose defence appeared on the point of collapse whenever threatened. The fact that the diminutive Coutinho was allowed to win a header unmarked spoke volumes about Palace’s problems and it took an excellent save from Mandanda to push the Brazilian’s effort against the post. Sixty seconds later Sadio Mane sliced a first-time shot over the bar when he had time and space to pick his spot. The second half continued in similar fashion, albeit with fewer glaring defensive errors, with Mane again guilty of failing to make more of a clear chance while Benteke was denied by a fine save from Karius. But Firmino’s welltaken chipped finish from Jordan Henderson’s through ball in the 71st minute ensured Liverpool could see out the final stages in relative comfort.

ries finished 1-1. England needed their highest successful run chase in Asia and looked well set after a century opening partnership between Alastair Cook and Ben Duckett but lost all 10 wickets in 22.5 overs in the final session. Duckett (56) scored his first Test half-century but was bowled by Mehedi with the first ball after tea, prompting the stunning collapse - the worst by a team who had been 100-0 in Test history. Joe Root was out lbw in the following over to Shakib, before Gary Ballance and Moeen Ali were
dismissed in the same Mehedi over shortly afterwards. Cook made 59 but, despite successfully overturning one dismissal, the England captain was caught off Mehedi by Mominul Haque at silly point. Shakib then dismissed Ben Stokes, Adil Rashid and Zafar Ansari in quick succession. Fittingly, Mehedi took the final wicket of Steven Finn to finish with six in the innings, 12 in the match and 19 in the series. Openers Cook and Duckett, who batted together for the first time in the first Test in Chittagong,
Bale extends Real Madrid deal to 2022 M A D RI D, O c t 3 0 (Agencies): Gareth Bale tied his long term future to Real Madrid on Sunday by extending his contract with the Spanish giants to 2022, the club confirmed. “Real Madrid CF and Gareth Bale have agreed an extension to the player’s contract, keeping him at the club until the 30th of June 2022,” Madrid said in a statement. Bale, 27, joined Real for a then world record fee from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013 on a six-year deal and has won the Champions League twice in his three full seasons in the Spanish capital. The Welshman is just the latest of a series of Real stars to agree contract extensions in recent weeks as the club prepares to serve a one-year transfer ban imposed by FIFA should a final appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport fail.
SE PA N G , O c t 3 0 (Agencies): Andrea Dovizioso won his first MotoGP race in seven years Sunday, pulling away from motorcycling legend Valentino Rossi late in the Malaysia Grand Prix to take the checkered flag for Ducati. Starting from the pole position, the Italian fell back early as a number of riders appeared to struggle with a rain-soaked track. But he steadily reeled in his compatriot Rossi, taking the lead back with six laps to go and quickly opening up a gap as Rossi was slowed by tyre issues.
had only managed a best partnership of 26 in their previous three innings. Duckett, 22, impressed with an aggressive 56, hitting seven fours and a six, and played a number of reverse sweeps and pull shots. Bangladesh bowled all four spinners in the session leading up to tea but they took no wickets in helpful conditions. Cook had scored four, 12 and 14 in the series but also batted fluently in a period that seemed to swing the game in England’s favour. England will rue their failure to take early wickets as Bangladesh added 116 runs in the morning session and Cook’s side dropped four catches. Imrul Kayes scored 78 but was dropped at leg slip by Cook off the bowling of Ansari, and then by Root off Moeen in the first 10 overs of the day. Both were difficult catches but Duckett dropped a simple chance at deep mid-wicket later in the session with Shakib the batsman to benefit. Kayes’ innings and 41 from Shakib helped Bangladesh to 268-7 at lunch, but Stokes (3-52) and Rashid (4-52) helped England knock over the tail in 26 balls after lunch.
Cibulkova claims WTA Finals crown Singapore, Oct 30 (Agencies): Dominika Cibulkova completed a remarkable turnaround at the WTA Finals as she defeated top seed and world No 1 Angelique Kerber to claim the title. The Slovakian world No 8 lost her opening two round-robin matches in Singapore to Kerber and Madison Keys and appeared set for an early exit from the tournament. However, the 27-yearold squeezed into the semifinals by defeating Simona Halep and she followed up her victory over Svetlana Kuznetsova in the last four on Saturday with a 6-3 6-4 win over German Kerber in the final. Cibulkova’s achievement matches that of 2015 winner Agnieszka Radwanska, who also captured the title with a 1-2 pool record. Kerber, who beat defending champion Radwanska in the semi-finals, had actually helped seventh seed Cibulkova to progress from the Red Group when she saw off Keys 6-3 6-3 in her final round-robin match on Thursday.

Russian duo Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova claimed their first WTA Finals doubles title with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 victory over Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. The Olympic champions were broken when they served for the opening set at 5-4 but regrouped in the
tie-break to edge ahead of the third seeded AmericanCzech partnership before a single break in the second set proved enough to seal the title. Left-hander Makarova finished off the contest on the pair’s fourth championship point when Mattek-Sands could only get the frame of her racket to a booming serve out wide.

Dhaka, Oct 30 (Agencies): Bangladesh claimed their first Test win over England as the tourists lost 10 wickets for just 64 runs after tea on day three of the second Test in Dhaka. Chasing 273, England collapsed from 100-0, with 19-year-old Mehedi Hasan taking 6-77 and Shakib al Hasan 4-49. They had earlier dismissed the hosts for 296 after four dropped catches. Dovizioso, 30, finished 3.115secs ahead of Rossi for his maiden win of the season and first since 2009. Rossi, meanwhile, clinched second place in the 2016 world championship over his Yamaha teammate Jorge Lorenzo, who finished third Sunday at the Sepang International Circuit. “Well, it was in 2009, a long time,” a clearly relieved Dovizioso said of the extended wait for a win.“It’s really nice to come to this moment. time in his career. Mishra, with 15 wickets in the New Zealand series, was also adjudged as the man of the series, shares the 12th spot in the bowler’s rankings with South African Dale Steyn. The other India bowlers who have made progress in the bowling charts include paceman Umesh Yadav and youngster Jasprit Bumrah. Yadav’s eight
wickets in the series have taken him to 35th spot while Bumrah has climbed up 29 rungs to secure career-best 57th position. New Zealand pacemen Trent Boult continues to lead the bowler’s rankings followed by West Indies’ Sunil Narine at second and South African Imran Tahir at third. While Indian bowlers have enjoyed a rise in their
stocks, the case isn’t the same with their batsmen. India openers Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane have both fallen two places to be placed ninth and 20th respectively. Though Virat Kohli, the leading run-getter with 358 runs, continues to be the second best behind AB de Villiers, he has cut down the South African’s lead from 48 to 13 points.

Mourinho bans Schweinsteiger from reserves
L ondon , O c t 3 0 (Agencies): Jose Mourinho is alleged to have completely ostracised Bastian Schweinsteiger at Manchester United, with the German allegedly blocked from playing for the reserves having already been banished from the first team. The Mirror reports that the 32-year-old outcast had hoped to keep up his match fitness ahead of finding a new club by playing some minutes for United’s other sides, after being told he was not in Mourinho’s first-team plans. However, it looks like Schweinsteige r has again been foiled despite the Sunday People claiming reserve boss Warren Joyce had requested for the World Cup winner’s services in the Under-23 Premier League.
