Jayanthi Natarajan (File)

NEW DELHI, SEP 9 (AGENCIES): The CBI on Saturday registered a corruption case against former Union Environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan and raided her premises in Chennai in connection with clearance given during her tenure for diversion of forest land for mining in alleged violation of laws. The CBI alleged that Natarajan, as the environment minister during UPA rule , abused her official position while giving clearances to Electosteel Casting Limited, a private company in Jharkhand, in violation of the existing mining laws, environment laws and directions of the Supreme Court. “Jayanthi Natarajan accorded the approval for diversion of 55.79 hectares of forest land for non-forestry use to ECL, though the same had been rejected by the earlier minister of state ... without any change in the circumstances after rejection,” the CBI FIR said.

The central anti-corruption probe agency had registered five Preliminary Enquiries (PEs) in 2015 to probe alleged irregularities committed by Natarajan and others while giving clearances to several projects. After the anomalies became public, Natarajan was removed as the environment minister by the Congress. She had written an explosive letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi alleging that it was on Rahul Gandhi’s directives that she had red-flagged big-ticket projects in the environment ministry. The Congress even went on to say that the timing and content of Natarajan’s letter indicated that she was under pressure from corporate houses linked to BJP to write against Rahul. The CBI sources said that the former director of Electosteel, Umang Kejriwal, has also been named in its FIR. Sources added that Natarajan would be called for questioning very soon. The CBI had registered two PEs in October 2014 against unknown environment ministry officials, Jindal Steel and Power Ltd and JSW Steel. The agency later registered another PE to probe clearances to Rungta Mines in Ghatkuri Reserve Forest of Jharkhand and two more enquiries. Some of Jayanthi Natarajan’s decisions were contradicted by her Cabinet colleague Jairam Ramesh.

DIMAPUR, SEP 9 (NPN): In the light of the July 26, 2017 landmark Supreme Court judgment, the Nagaland Public Rights Awareness and Action Forum (NPRAAF) appealed to Governor of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, PB Acharya, to “act constitutionally” on the “unconstitutional appointments” of parliamentary secretaries and advisors. NPRAAF information & publicity cell termed as “very unfortunate” that the governor still allowed the two state governments to retain unconstitutional post of parliamentary secretaries and advisors defying the Supreme Court judgement. The forum stated that the governor should not remain oblivious to the issue, saying his sole role was to protect the constitution and not run the government. NPRAAF maintained that the “credibility of the governor” would be enhanced if he acted before the “ultimate judgement” of the Kohima Bench of Gauhati High Court, which it said was bound to be in line with several High Court and Supreme Court Judgments. In this regard, NPRAAF has urged the governor to act upon fearlessly in tune with the Constitution of India to instil peoples’ confidence in the governor’s office. According to NPRAAF, it has also submitted a representation to the governor through his special officer on September 9, 2017 to quash the unconstitutional appointments of parliamentary secretaries and advisors before the Kohima Bench of Gauhati High Court verdict.

want to give adequate time to taxpayers,” Jaitley told reporters after the meeting. “There are transient challenges in technology. The Council decided to appoint a committee, the composition of which will be announced in a day or two. It will consist of ministers who will interact with GST to ensure a smooth transformation,” he said. The decision was taken after the Council reviewed the functioning of the GST Network platform. A detailed presentation was given to the members by GSTN officials. Jaitley said the portal did face technical glitches on two-three occasions due to overload. He also said that in consonance with the recommendations of the fitment committee, the tax

rates on approximately 30 goods of common man’s utility, including raincoats, rubberbands and batter for idli and dosa, have been reduced. Khadi fabric through Khadi and Village Industries Commission Act of 1956 (KVIC) stores will now be exempted under GST. Talking about the increase in cess rates on automobiles, he said that while status quo has been maintained for small cars (petrol and diesel), hybrid cars and 13-seater vehicles, the Council decided to increase the cess rates for some segments. Goods and Services Tax cess on mid-segment cars has been increased by 2 per cent, for large segment cars it has been increased by 5 per cent and for SUVs by 7 per cent, he said.

Security upped along Indo-Myanmar border Correspondent

IMPHAL, SEP 9: Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Saturday said that security along the Indo-Myanmar border on Manipur side has been beefed up to check possible influx of the displaced Rohingya Muslims. The steps have been particularly taken up along the borderline at Moreh in Tengnoupal district and Biyang of in Churachandpur district, he added. Over 270,000 Rohingya have fled northern Myanmar in the past two weeks and most of them have landed in Bangladesh. More than 1,000 people have been killed in the violence, according to media reports. Meanwhile, more Muslim based bodies in Manipur have condemned the killing of Rohingya Muslims. All India Tanzeem-e-Insaaf, Manipur State Council alleged that since October last year till date over 1,70,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar and were taking shelter in Bangladesh.

DIMAPUR, SEP 9 (NPN): Nagaland Press Association (NPA) has expressed shock over assassination of Gauri Lankesh, a senior journalist and Editor of the weekly Gauri Lankesh Patrike, outside her home in Bangalore on September 5. Gauri Lankesh’s weekly, which had been described as an ‘anti-establishment’ publication, was known for being not just a critic of right-wing Hindu extremism but also raised voice against powerful organisations. NPA said Gauri paid the price for standing up for her beliefs. Stating that violence and killing was not the way to confront our differences, NPA said in a democracy, which we have adopted, dissent is legitimate and part of free speech. “If there is anything that is contrary to the spirit of our democracy and rule

of law, the judiciary is there to address grievances and give justice,” it added. Resorting to violence is not only undemocratic but it makes us unworthy as humans-- valuing life and order, NPA said with the firm belief that dialogue remains the best way forward to resolve whatever differences people may have. Meanwhile, NPA said it stood with the rest of the media and human fraternity in demanding that the guilty be brought to justice. NPA also expressed concerned by the manner in which the issue had been politicized even to the extent that the media was divided along “so called ideological lines”. “The media is acknowledged as the fourth pillar of democracy and we should remain conscious of our duties-- to stand for truth, fairness and dialogue,” NPA asserted.

GPRN/NSCN condemns news report DIMAPUR, SEP 9 (NPN): GPRN/ NSCN has vehemently condemned the news report published in a local daily on September 8, 2017 under the headline-“GPRN/NSCN to start political talk with Centre”. GPRN/NSCN through its MIP has said that the reporter who reported the news had crossed all boundaries and ethics of journalism by concocting an article attributed to GPRN/NSCN leaders C Singson and Hokato Vusshe. MIP said that C. Singson, advisor to collective leadership of GPRN/NSCN got a call from the reporter, H. Chishi on September 6 and a friendly chat between two individuals took place after a long time. Singson had shared his casual views without any intention or without a hint that his friend on the other end would go to the media, MIP said. However, it said “a personal view in the capacity of GPRN/NSCN official was inflated with great negativity”. MIP said that the reporter did not express prior request for a media interview either in person or through telephone. On the same day, MIP said that the reporter also spoke to kilonser Hokato Vusshe over the phone to clarify on the prejudiced, inflammatory and personal

comments which the reporter posted on the Sumi social media platform. Since there was never a word uttered on the current political situation, MIP expressed surprise as to how and from where H. Chishi quoted Hokato Vusshe on political matters. Though there was no question of infringing upon the freedom of the press, MIP however said the improper practice must be pointed out since the reporter had tarnished the good image of the media fraternity of Nagaland.
