Another defense scam under scrutiny of govt

NEW DELHI/SAO PAULO(IANS: For the Modi government, the Brazilian probe on Embraer Aerospace company for alleged payment of bribes for a three-aircraft deal to India in 2008 during the UPA rule, has come as another unexpected gift that would be used as weapon against the Congress in the upcoming campaign in Uttar Pradesh. The defence ministry has lost no time to seek more information from Embraer Aerospace, which has also set aside $200 million to pay fine following investigation by US authorities. According to media reports in Sao Paulo, Embraer is being probed by prosecutors in Brazil and the US Justice Department over commissions allegedly paid to a UK-based defence agent for clinching the 2008 deal. In Delhi, the principal spokesperson of the defence ministry tweeted: “ DRDO+(Defence Research and Development Organisation) to seek explanation and details from manufacturers of Embraer aircraft on media

reports on deal for the aircraft signed in 2008,” The deal, inked by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, involved the purchase of three EMB145 planes for $208 million. The first aircraft was delivered in 2011, and the other two were delivered later. The DRDO is fabricating the indigenous AEW&C (Airborne Early Warning and Control) systems that are being mounted on the Embraers, which the IAF will operate. The system is still not ready as the DRDO has missed several deadlines. It is now scheduled to be completed by December. The DRDO has said it is not aware of any commissions being paid for the deal. A few months ago, there were allegations of commissions and middlemen in what has come to be known as the VVIP chopper scam. Responding to queries, BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said: “Whatever corruption happened during 10 years of the UPA government, we are acting firmly on it and will continue to do so.”

Pres hopes GST Council is set up soon

CHENNAI, SEP 10 (IANS): President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday hoped the central government would set up the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council to fix the tax rate while praising former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan for taking steps to solve the situation in the banking sector. Speaking at the centenary celebrations of Karur Vysya Bank Ltd, Mukherjee said the GST Bill has been passed and it has been ratified by 20 states qualifying for the Presidential asset. Hoping the Union Finance Ministry will take appropriate steps to set up the GST Council to fix the tax rate, he pointed out that it is GST Council’s responsibility to have one uniform rate of GST tax to be introduced all over India. It will not only be one uniform rate of taxes, but it will also be single point taxation and not multi-point taxation and therefore the cascading effect of that will not be very serious, Mukherjee said.

Dimapur, Sep 10 (NPN): Sumi Hoho has declared its dissociation from the Naga Hoho and further recalled all Sumi representatives from the Naga Hoho with immediate effect, in pursuance of the resolution of the Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC). This was stated in a joint press communiqué by Sumi Hoho president Toniho Yepthomi and general secretary Vihuto Assumi on Saturday. Sumi Hoho reminded that CNTC was endorsed by apex organisations of three tribes- Ao Senden, Lotha Hoho and Sumi Hoho- and launched on December 8,2012. Again, with the approval of the three tribal apex organisations, CNTC was elevated to state-level apex organisation on March 12, 2016, SH said. Further, Sumi Hoho pointed out that on July 22, 2016 CNTC held a meeting with the apex organisation of the three tribes, at Khehokhu village and deliberated on the recognition of Rongmei as an indigenous tribe of Nagaland. In the meeting, the three apex bodies and CNTC resolved to serve a 30-day ultimatum on Naga Hoho to withdraw its endorsement given to the

government of Nagaland on September 22,2008 to recognise Rongmei as an indigenous tribe. Sumi Hoho said again on August 24,2016 the CNTC with the three apex organisations resolved that in the event Naga Hoho failed to comply with the demand to withdraw endorsement to the state government on recognition of Rongmei, the three (Ao Senden, Lotha Hoho and Sumi Hoho) will dissociate from the Naga Hoho . This was subsequently reported in the local dailies on September 1,2106 said Sumi Hoho. Therefore being a constituent tribal organisation of CNTC, Sumi Hoho reaffirmed its full endorsement of the resolution of CNTC and decided to dissociate from Naga Hoho. It may be recalled, that Lotha Hoho had on September 5, 2016 issued a public declaration of dissociation from Naga Hoho and had also made known that there is no representative of the Lotha tribe in the Naga Hoho. There has been no official response till date, from the Ao Senden, regarding its stand over the resolution of the CNTC on the expiry of the 30-day deadline issued on the Naga Hoho.

LKM on ‘clean election’ news in brief

Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, SEP 10 (NPN): Following the September 3, 2016 adoption of 13-point resolution aimed at pursuing clean election in the three Assembly Constituencies of Lampangkong range, the Clean Election Campaign Committee (CECC) appointed by the Lampangkong Students’ Conference (LKM) organised a press conference at Press Point Conference Hall here on Saturday and apprised media persons of its plans and efforts towards implementing the resolutions. The CECC members stated that the campaign’s objective was to reach every individual of the range by implementing the resolutions through village councils. The committee plans to educate and empower the village councils and villagers through various means of mass media and interactions for which, CECC informed, it would be visiting all the towns and villages. With regards to financing of the campaign, CECC informed it will open an account under LKM CECC for donations. Through a PowerPoint presentation- prepared for the campaign- CECC informed the campaign would include a pledge where voters will pledge not to sell their vote, abstain from proxy voting and violence, and to vote on elections day.

The campaign also aims to educate voters towards choosing the right candidate and in this respect the CECC has formulated ‘parameters’ which would help identify the right candidate. According to the CECC, a candidate should not be an alcoholic, immoral, uncultured, a bad representative who couldn’t highlight people’s problems in public platforms, persons with selfish motives, and a violent/arrogant person without moral identity. The committee stated it would encourage voters to elect a God-fearing-well-cultured individual who is knowledgeable, patriotic, and selfless; someone who can effectively represent his constituency in any platform. Moreover, CECC informed it would also encourage village councils to restrict the number of election campaign vehicles entering a village. CECC also informed that it would be approaching the Election Commission for cooperation towards implementing the resolutions. Also, maintaining that the campaign was a moral and spiritual effort/appeal aimed at reforming the prevailing election system, CECC opined the campaign would significantly cut down the election expenditure of a candidate. Further, CECC appealed for cooperation from all concerned towards making the campaign successful and making clean elections a reality.

Stating that security challenges go much beyond conventional borders and threats in the international arena including a sizeable diaspora, he said, “India requires young men and women to take up the challenge of navigation through troubled waters and work tirelessly and selflessly even at the peril of their lives in the service of country.” “Our security challenges in fact go much beyond conventional borders and conventional threats in the international

arena including a sizeable diaspora to protect in unstable regions in the world, energy security issues and protection of maritime sea lanes,” he said. Addressing the officers on the occasion of review of the passing out parade of the summer term at officers Training Academy (OTA), Mukherjee said the country has reposed faith in armed forces in internal crisis situations, both manmade and natural. This is the third time in the 53-year-old history of the OTA, that a President of the country is reviewing the Parade. “All these challenges demand a capable and responsive armed Forces to ensure stability and peace, so vital for our country on its path of peace and prosperity for all its citizens,”

Andhra shutdown over special status

Ban Gaurakshak samiti, they are spreading terror: Yechury

V I JAYAWA DA , S E P 1 0 (IANS): The day-long Andhra Pradesh shutdown called by the opposition parties on Saturday to protest denial of special category status to the state evoked near total response, affecting normal life. The shutdown was total in some parts of the state while it was near total in other regions. The day witnessed street protests and large-scale arrests. Public transport was affected in all the 13 districts as activists of Yuvajana, Shramika, Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) stopped buses from plying. The opposition workers staged sit-in at Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) depots since early Saturday to prevent buses from coming out. However, police arrested scores of protesters. APSRTC was initially running buses in some districts with police protection but services resumed in many places in the afternoon. Shops and business establishments and educational institutions also remained closed in Vijayawada, Guntur, Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, Kurnool, Anantapur and other towns.

Modi’s ministers to criss-cross globe NEW DELHI, SEP 10 (PTI): Ministers of the Modi government will criss-cross the globe in the next three months as part of an outreach programme that will cover 68 countries to achieve the target of NDA ministers having visited all the 192 nations with which India has diplomatic relations. Home Minister Rajnath Singh will travel to Hungary, which is among the countries not visited by any minister in the Modi government. Apart from Singh, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will visit Estonia and Latvia and Chemical and Fertiliser Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar will be heading to Tongo, while BJP ally Lok Janshakti Party leader and Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan has been assigned to travel to Mauritius. The entire exercise is likely to be over by the year end. Noting that by 2016-end, the government will not leave any country where Indian Ministers have not gone, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, in letters to the ministers, said her Ministry has identified 68 nations yet to be visited by them.

Sitaram Yechuri

JAIPUR, SEP 10 (PTI): CPI(M) today accused the Centre of promoting Gaurakshak Samiti (Cow protection groups) to gain “political advantage” in 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls and demanded a complete ban them, saying volunteers of such organisations were spreading terror and have become law unto themselves. “Gaurakshak Samiti are spreading terror in the name of protection of cows. States have legislations for protection of cows. There are police and administration to deal with such matters but such Samiti are acting like a law unto themselves,” CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechuri told reporters at a press conference here. He also attacked RSS and organisations associated to it for creating an atmosphere of fear in the name of Gauraksha (protection of cows) and said, Dalits were being targeted and this would not be tolerated. “Dalits are being targeted in the name of Gauraksha and this will not be tolerated. A demonstration will be held in Delhi on September 16 and our party will support it,” he said. On the issue of RSS being

responsible for assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, he said RSS as an organisation may not be responsible but an individual associated with it was. “Sardar Patel had said about RSS that activities sponsored by Sangh and atmosphere created by it has claimed many lives with latest being Mahatma,” he said. Yechuri accused the the Narendra Modi-led NDA government at the Centre for failing to control inflation and handle issues of farmers and labourers. “BJP had promised that minimum support price higher would be fixed higher than the input cost incurred by the farmers, but the decision has not been implemented yet, which is one of the major issues of the peasants,” he said. The suicide rate of farmers has increased 26 per cent since 2014 “but the government seems to be not concerned about it”. He said Modi government has written off bad debts of Rs 1.12 lakh crore of corporate sector in two years, but when it comes to waiving loans of the farmers, the government refuses to do so saying “it has no resources”.

BJP-Congress spar over Zakir Naik donation; Zakir claims innocence

NEW DELHI, SEP 10 (IANS): The Congress on Saturday accused the government of lying after the BJP alleged that controversial Islamic scholar Zakir Naik had paid Rs 50 lakh donation to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. Cabinet Minister and BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said the Foundation - which has Congress President Sonia Gandhi as chairperson - had taken the donation from Naik’s Islamic Research Foundation (IRF). Prasad called it a “bribe”. When the Congress said the money was later returned, Prasad demanded to know why this wasn’t done in 2012 itself when security agencies gave a negative report about Naik’s Peace TV. The Congress said the BJP and the central government were spreading lies with “mischievous and selective news plants”. Cong ress spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala said the money was not given to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF) but to the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust (RGCT). “RGCT received a donation in conformity with law and norms and the same was returned in view of the controversy surrounding the IRF and Naik,” he said. “RGF is a distinct, separate, unallied and independent legal entity from RGCT and has never had any donation/ funds from IRF and has no connection whatsoever with IRF,” he added. Surjewala accused the Narendra Modi government of running a “diabolical agenda to slender, malign and defame through ‘Goebbelsian lies”. “What is utterly shocking is that a Cabinet Minister, who has sworn by the Constitu-

tion, is asking questions about documents and facts which are (with) the government and are being leaked by them mischievously.” He said in 2011 the RGCT received “one single unsolicited stray donation of Rs 50 lakh” from IRF, which was directly deposited in the RGCT account by Naik’s IRF by cheque. “In early July this year, when the IRF/Naik controversy became public, RGCT refunded this money to IRF. RGCT also took a decision that after the refund, RGCT will have no engagement of any type with IRF,” he said. Meanwhile, Naik said the campaign against him was an attack on Indian Muslims and a “murder of democracy”. “If IRF and I are banned, it will be the biggest jolt to the country’s democracy of recent times,” he said. “I do not say this just for me but because this ban will set a precedence of unspeakable injustices against the 20 crore Muslims of India.” Describing himself as the “biggest name and the most popular figure” among Muslims, Naik said: “If you can bring down and demonize this figure of the community, the rest becomes a cakewalk. Amid growing calls that his IRF should be banned, Naik, in a 2,000-word open letter, urged the government to be “fair” in its investigation and be “truthful with facts”. He said he was ready to be punished for any wrongdoing but this should be on the basis of concrete evidence and not hearsay. He said he had spent 25 years promoting peace and spreading greater awareness of Islam besides talking about similarities between religions, and the last two months had been a rude shock.

DUSU polls: ABVP bags 3 top posts

ABVP candidates Amit Tanwar, Priyanka Chabri and Ankit Sangwan celebrate their victory after winning the post of President, Vice President and Secretary in the 2016 DUSU elections in Delhi on Saturday. (PTI) NEW DELHI, SEP 10 (IANS): The BJP-affiliated ABVP on Saturday won three top posts of the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU), leaving one to the Congressbacked NSUI. The ABVP had swept all four seats both in 2014 and 2015. Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad’s Amit Tanwar, Priyanka Chhawri and Ankit Sangwan were elected the DUSU President, Vice President and Secretary respectively. Mohit Garid of the National Students Union of India won the Joint Secretary’s post. Tanwar defeated NSUI’s Nikhil Yadav by 4,290 votes, receiving 16,127 votes. Priyanka worsted the NSUI’s Ar jun Chaprana by 2,455 votes. Sangwan defeated the NSUI’s Vinita Dhaka by 1,683 votes. Garid defeated the ABVP’s Vishal Yadav by 2,466 votes. Hundreds of ABVP supporters celebrated the victory in the Delhi University campus, one of the oldest in the country. “It is a great feeling to have been selected as the President of the University,” Tanwar told the media. “We

have various plans such as opening of more hostels and other infrastructure problems will be dealt with.” Priyanka said she would work to set up more hostels exclusively for girl students. NSUI members protested outside the election office saying there was no transparency during the vote count. “We had asked for machine wise and college wise data of the polls. But they haven’t provided it saying they don’t maintain it,” NSUI National Secretary Deepak Negi told IANS. “We always had doubts. We knew there would be no transparency. We will now demand recounting,” he added. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad had swept all four posts in 2014 and 2015, defeating the National Students Union of India and - last year -- the Aam Aadmi Party student wing CYSS too. The Left-leaning All India Students Association (AISA) failed to make any impact this year. The CYSS did not contest the election held on Friday. There were a total of 1,23,421 voters in Delhi University.

Cycle is not moving; Rahul takes jibe at SP JAUNPUR, SEP 10 (PTI): Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi today took a jibe at the Samajwadi Party (SP), saying “the cycle (SP’s poll symbol), voted to power by the people (in the last Uttar Pradesh Assembly election), was not moving”. “You removed the elephant (BSP’s poll symbol) and brought the cycle...but the cycle is stationary,” he told a gathering at Khetasaria here. “Do not know if it (the

cycle) has a puncture or is tied from behind or broken, but it is not moving,” he added. The Gandhi scion, who is on his ‘Deoria to Dilli yatra’ to connect with the masses in the run-up to the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, took a potshot at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “frequent” foreign visits. “Modiji apni duniya mein mast rehte hain...jaisa mainey kaha tha ‘janata trast, Modiji

mast’ (Modiji is happy in his own world. As I had said earlier, the public is in trouble but Modiji is happy)...his attention is either in America or Japan. “He made tall promises that everyone will get Rs 15 lakh in their bank accounts, the youth will get employment and bullet trains will be run. When will they get Rs 15 lakh? When will the youth get employment and bullet trains? Even the regular train fares have been hiked,”

he said. Rahul, who had lunch at the Guraini madarsa and took part in a road show, explained the motive behind his 2,500-km yatra to the people. “During the two years of the Modi government, Rs 1.10 lakh crore have been waived off. This was for the 15 richest people of the country whereas, during our tenure, we had waived off Rs 70,000 crore of farmers and the poor,” he alleged.

Leftist alliance sweeps JNUSU polls In a major assertion of Leftist politics in Jawaharlal Nehru University, the All India Students Association (AISA) and Students Federation of India (SFI) alliance has swept all the four posts of JNU students’ union elections. In a closely watched contest between a Leftist alliance and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the AISASFI alliance emerged as winner following a 60 per cent voter turnout on Friday. However, the result figures suggested the emergence of the two-year-old Birsa-Ambedkar-Phule Student Association (BAPSA) as a significant player in the polls. In fact, the main fight for the post of JNUSU president was witnessed between Mohit Pandey of AISA-SFI alliance and BAPSA’s Rahul Sonpimple. The Left’s victory in JNU achieves significance in the backdrop of February 9 incident in which three JNU students including former JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested for sedition. As soon as the final results were announced, hundreds of JNU students broke into celebrations and sloganeering against ABVP. IN THE HON’BLE COURT OF SRI. N.K DEKA BARUAH, ASSTT. Doubletalk

ndia probably sees much on the recent warning by US to Pakistan to ‘rein in’ terror outfits and associates of the Haqqani network which has been branded as the ‘veritable arm’ of the Pakistani Inter Services Intelligence(ISI); or else face the same fate as Al Qaeda head Osama Bin Laden. The US government’s stand was stated by White House Press Secretary Jay Carney to media persons in Washington. Carney also went on to clarify that both the USA and Pakistan have a complicated but important relationship in joining hands against Al Qaeda. The present Obama administration is on its way out and by January 2017 a new administration will assume office. It is not known whether there will be a marked shift in case the Republicans regain the White House or if there won’t be much changed if the Democrats retain the White House. Pakistan is not one country that anyone can lean or rely on without a quid pro quo. Pakistan’s intelligentsia have a vested interest in keeping the country afloat with Islam on one side and China and the US on the other side. The practical aspects of Pakistan’s clever ability to be Islamic to Islamic nations, a friend to the Chinese and an able ally against terrorism to the US is indeed noteworthy. Though the US has been rather honest in assuring India of its total commitment to fight terror even those sponsored from across Pakistan; yet America cannot and will not jettison its ally. There is every reason to believe that Pakistan, as usual has played its cards well and notwithstanding India’s belief, the US has made no bones that it is with Pakistan all the way the fight against terror. Both Osama and the Talibans are the creations of the US in its proxy war against the then USSR’s occupation of Afghanistan. The US not only created a Frankenstein but also helped Pakistan to cement its relations with various terrorist groups fighting against the USSR forces in Afghanistan. The covert war against the Soviets in Afghanistan also meant promoting Saudi terrorist elements like the Ladens as well as other Islamic jehadi groups formed of which ISIS is one of them .Now the Frankenstein of terror in the form ISIS has come to haunt the US. The Pakistani intelligentsia know the US needs Pakistan more than the other way around. The US is now left flirting with both India and Pakistan though the latter finds a bigger space and attention. The Wikileak cables had revealed the true feeling in the US government where Saudi Arabia , its staunchest ally in the Arab world, is seen as the biggest financer of Islamic terrorism and would not be inclined to stop the flow nor act against financers and promoters of terror. In a way, the USA has become the victim of bitter truth-its assessment on other nations and the revelations of these assessments. Perhaps the US will learn a lesson that sleep talking can be a fatal disease. No country in the world has been able to deal with terrorism effectively like Israel. The tiny Jewish state has had to fight several wars against Arab neighbours possessing as much as ten times more men that its army possesses including thousands of jehadis willing to kill, maim or destroy any Jew or western allies of Israel.

DailyDevotion Missionary Weapons (1) When you were under the fig tree, I saw you. —John 1:48 Worshiping in Everyday Occasions. We presume that we would be ready for battle if confronted with a great crisis, but it is not the crisis that builds something within us— it simply reveals what we are made of already. Do you find yourself saying, “If God calls me to battle, of course I will rise to the occasion”? Yet you won’t rise to the occasion unless you have done so on God’s training ground. If you are not doing the task that is closest to you now, which God has engineered into your life, when the crisis comes, instead of being fit for battle, you will be revealed as being unfit. Crises always reveal a person’s true character. A private relationship of worshiping God is the greatest essential element of spiritual fitness. The time will come, as Nathanael experienced in this passage, that a private “fig-tree” life will no longer be possible. Everything will be out in the open, and you will find yourself to be of no value there if you have not been worshiping in everyday occasions in your own home. If your worship is right in your private relationship with God, then when He sets you free, you will be ready. It is in the unseen life, which only God saw, that you have become perfectly fit. And when the strain of the crisis comes, you can be relied upon by God. Are you saying, “But I can’t be expected to live a sanctified life in my present circumstances; I have no time for prayer or Bible study right now; besides, my opportunity for battle hasn’t come yet, but when it does, of course I will be ready”? No, you will not. If you have not been worshiping in everyday occasions, when you get involved in God’s work, you will not only be useless yourself but also a hindrance to those around you. God’s training ground, where the missionary weapons are found, is the hidden, personal, worshiping life of the saint.

Post-mortem

Why is the USDA buying shotguns, drones, helicopters, and bombs? I

Rich in Personal life but poor in community life

T

oday, some disturbing details about the growing power of the Deep State. But first an update from the ranch... It snowed a little this morning...just a few light flakes. We lit a fire in the woodstove in our office and put on a pot of coffee. For a moment, it seemed calm and pleasant. Then the ranch foreman came to give his report... ‘I Was Completely Surprised’ Gustavo is a nice, thoughtful fellow. He aims to do his best. But he, like your editor, is completely out of his element in politics. To make matters worse, he is too young and too new to the job to have much authority with the local people. Gustavo is Jorge’s replacement. Jorge knew everyone. Everyone respected his judgement. He and his wife, Maria, made the ranch work. But Jorge retired, after a lifetime of running the ranch. And once Jorge was out of the way (he moved to the city to be closer to his children), the trouble began. ‘Tell me what happened,’ we told Gustavo. ‘I was completely surprised. About a week after you left, I got up in the morning and got ready to go to work. We were going to move some cattle up to Compuel [a high pasture]. But a group of people showed up. They gathered in front of my house. They said the land up there belonged to them and that we couldn’t take our cattle there. ‘I tried to talk to them, but they wouldn’t listen. I used the radio to call the city. I asked them to send the police. ‘Then they moved their animals onto the field in front of the secret garden where we keep our bulls. And they put a gate on our road with a lock on it so we couldn’t pass. ‘Samuel [one of our ranch hands] knocked down their gate and got in a fight with one of them. But I didn’t think that was a good idea. I tried to calm the situation. ‘It is very difficult for me. Their ringleader is like a brother to me.’ ‘It’s Like They Wanted War’: ‘It’s like they wanted a war,’ Gustavo continued. ‘They meet at night at one of the houses near the school and

figure out their next move. I think they’re trying to goad us into doing something stupid.’ The ‘Originario War’ has divided families. As you would expect, those who work for the ranch are against the originarios - the local indigenous people claiming title to our land. Others aren’t so sure which side to take. Brothers, sisters, aunts, and uncles - they are forced to choose between kin and cause. ‘You know old Francisco, Samuel’s father, died last week,’ Gustavo went on. ‘I think they didn’t look after him properly. He sided with us. But his wife and the rest of the family sided with the originarios.’ Francisco was an old man. And he was blind. ‘He got sick. And it was very cold. Either they weren’t paying attention or they just didn’t care about him.’ Which leads us to: A ‘Short Treatise on Government in the Context of the Originario War.’ ‘I Am the State’: ‘I am the state,’ said Louis XIV, who ruled France for 72 years. ‘The government is all of us,’ says Hillary Clinton, who hopes to become the next president of the United States. Neither is true. Louis, for all his big talk, could do nothing without the support of thousands of apparatchiks, fixers, and functionaries...not to mention his bone-breakers and executioners. At any moment, his entourage could have cut him down...his army could have turned against him...or the plain people could have revolted and upset the whole apple cart. Hillary, if she is elected, will be in roughly the same position, but much more powerful. Louis had no spy agency capable of monitoring everyone’s movements and conversations. He could send no drones to murder people. He couldn’t imagine going on TV and lying to the whole world at once...or confiscating half his subjects’ wages...or invading countries half way around the world. Hillary (or Donald Trump, for that matter) will have more people working for her in the Department of Energy than Sun King’s entire bureaucracy. If elected, she will become the most powerful person in

the history of the world...backed by the planet’s most lethal army, its most productive economy, and its biggest, most aggressive bureaucracy. Shotguns, Drones, and Bombs: In fact, a single agency, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), one of many under the umbrella of the US Department of Agriculture, would be a good match for Louis’s whole army. According to the Wall Street Journal, between 2004 and 2015, APHIS spent $4.8 million buying ‘shotguns, .308 caliber rifles, nightvision goggles, propane cannons, liquid explosives, pyro supplies, buckshot, LP gas cannons, drones, remote-control helicopters, thermal cameras, military waterproof thermal infrared scopes, and more’. (If the rutabagas go on the attack, the APHIS is ready for them!) And contrary to popular myth, Hillary won’t be backed by ‘all of us’. Nor will ‘all of us’ decide the important issues that affect all of us. We will not all govern, in other words. Only some of us will. The rest will be governed. The idea of the ‘government is all of us’ is absurd. We can’t all tell each other what to do. And if we all agreed, there would be no need for government. As it is, you could argue that there may be a need for it. But government fast reaches the point of declining marginal utility. That was the subject of our last book, Hormegeddon. And it is why Thomas Jefferson noted that ‘the government that governs least, governs best’. Hillary’s governors will be the same sort of people who backed the fourteenth Louis...and every other monarch, dictator, president, emperor, jackleg, and jingo-slinging commander-in-chief from Nebuchadnezzar to Barack Obama. The nomenklatura...the insiders...the elite...the Parasitocracy - Hillary will be backed by the people who matter...the real deciders...and the Deep State. Those are the people who really control the government and most of our largest institutions.

Appeal to the railway minister, Delhi (Objection for the shifting of divisional office from Lumding to Tinsukia)

W

hile drawing your kind attention with reference to the subject cited above, allow me to bring to your notice that a proposal for shifting of divisional office of NF Railway to Lumding to Tinsukia has been tabled in the railway board for its approval. In this regard, I, as a member of ZRUCC from Nagaland state vehemently oppose such a decision in the larger interest of the people from both Assam and Nagaland. My opposition is backed by astounding valid reasons. Firstly, the distance from Dimapur to Tinsukia is a lengthy one compared to Lumding which is just one and half hour distance, whereas, distance from Dimapur to Tinsukia is 7-8 hours. It will naturally create problem for staffs stationed in Lumding and Dimapr who will have to be compensated with higher TA, DA allowances and it will not be possible for the staff since they will have to hurdle for four days at a stretch. Secondly, another contention is that DImapur being the only railway station in the entire state of Nagaland till date though proposal for other new station has already been sanctioned in your esteemed tenure and we are greatly honoured for your presence to inaugurate the proposed new railway route to Zubza. However, till now Dimapur Railway station serves as an important railway gateway for both Nagaland and Manipur. However, even when Lumding being so close to Dimapur with the divisional office in Lumding, Dimapur station did not witness any significant development, though Dimapur railway station is the top revenue earner in Lumding division if it is shifted to Tinsukia it will give a big blow to Lumding division and Nagaland will not benefit an

T

iota from it. Thirdly, Tinsukia is a sensitive and insurgent prone area which will cause security concern for the railway officials. Fourthely, it will flare up political issue since Naga political solution is underway for a significant positive change, any such decision which will not benefit the people of Nagaladn may cause political upheaval which will not only tarnish the image of the railways but also the ruling government at the centre. It is also pertinent to bring to your kind notice that shifting of divisional office from Lumding to Tinsukia will bring innumerable problems to the catering and vending contractors as well as licensed porters as they will have to spend huge time, energy and money for resolving small issues and will become a big burden on them. Therefore, it is my urgent request to your esteemed office to introspect this matter with utmost urgency and half the shifting of divisional office from Lumding to Tinsukia for the benefit and the interest of everyone before it is too late to flare up any political upheaval in Nagaland. Therefore, I would remain ever gratefull if you kindly consider my request and officiate necessary procedural formalities to stop order of shifting Dimapur to Tinsukia division and if at all there is need for expansion of Tinsukia division then extension of its area of operation can be made up to Khatkhati or Bokajan the station which fall under geographical area of Assam and located just at border of Nagaland. P. H. Tripathi, Member ZRUCC, Nagaland.

Reality about NSEE II and stand of ENCSU

1. The Supreme Court in its judgment has directed the beneficiary States/UTs to conduct it’s own exam except the state/ut sitting for All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT). Thus, there’s nothing as direction to follow MCI rules as insisted by Technical Department. 2. If at all, the state wants to follow Medical Council of India (MCI) guidelines, the Department has to implement it strictly by following points (a) MCI has not given any authority to any states to conduct an Exam by the State Board of Education (e.g. NBSE in our state). So the Exam should be conducted by the Central Board of School Education (CBSE). (b) The MCI has also nothing said about setting up Common Selection Board (CSB) but the Nagaland state did headed by Parliamentary Secretary, Technical Education. So this body is an unauthorized. (c) If the Department has selected the candidates based on MCI than who gave them to give 15% reservations to the BTs of Nagaland when there’s nothing as such in the same rules? This is totally against the MCI rules. (d) according to MCI guidelines, students need to get 40% in 10+2 exam in PCB (Physic, Chemistry and Biology). 3. As directed the Nagaland state has also conducted its own exam known as Nagaland State Entrance Exam II by its own framed rules. 4. Since the state conducted its own rules MCI guidelines has nothing to do with the NSEE II

GDRN/NNC (NA) on impeachment of Kiumukam Yimchunger

he GDRN/NNC (Non-Accord) is compelled to issue this statement once again before the Nagas. All the statements which was published by MIP GDRN/NNC (Non-Accord) in local dailies are based on truth with full proof and evidence which can be verified at GDRN office at any time. The recent impeachment of Mr. Kiumukam Yimchunger was not only on the charge of extortion but also misused of power and misused of government official writing pad which is spread all over the business establishment in Dimapur, Kohima and even in his region. Therefore, he was impeached through democratic means as GDRN/NNC (Non-Accord) cannot compromise Naga issue to corrupted and extortionist leader.

The statements of so called Deputy in-charge MIP (as claimed) of Kiumukam Yimchunger supporter which appears in local dalies are full of lies, termination after termination just to make his points which clearly depicts his image and his nature. At no point of time kilo kilonser nor MIP kilonser was terminated from GDRN. If it happened, when, where, who terminated these kilonsers? come out with full proof and evidence in local media because Nagas wants to know from your claims. All those who are praising Kiumukam Yimchunger today has put him in their bowl with no where to go and also made him to earn good image of ‘impeachment’ and ‘extortionist’ leader, for their sole intention is to fulfill their greedy desire.

Together, they will shakedown the rest of us from sea to shining sea. But the racket works even better when people think it is their civic duty to cooperate. That is the advantage of ‘participatory democracy’: It makes it easier for the governors to squeeze more blood out of a population of turnips. HRC put some lipstick on it on Saturday: The power of American democracy comes from the fact that no one is left behind - no matter where they come from, what they look like, or who they love. That’s what I mean when I say that we’re stronger together. What she really means: The deciders are better off when they are able to dupe the masses into complicity. Useful Idiots:That’s how Napoleon was able to conquer ten times as much territory as Louis IX. Louis had subjects; they grudgingly went off to fight their monarch’s battles. Napoleon had citizens who were willing to sacrifice lives and property for La Patrie. Participatory democracy draws almost everyone into the spectacle. (Here in Argentina, for example, voting is compulsory, if you want to receive welfare and other benefits.) But 95% of the participants are what Lenin called ‘useful idiots’. Either they have no idea what is going on. Or like trustees in a concentration camp, they keep each other in line, and hope to get an extra crust. Naturally, sensible and honest men ‘everywhere and always’ despise government. They have contempt for democratic politics, too. They know is it nothing but manipulation and grandstanding - a sad, but greatly entertaining, spectacle of mountebanks and scoundrels, each pretending to be less bad than the other. Nevertheless, it was to the government we turned to protect our ranch when the originarios invaded. Cynical readers may detect a whiff of hypocrisy We deny it. More tomorrow... Bill Bonner

n the other states of India, we see the parallel of the rich in personal life and community life. We see many beautiful cities, beautiful possessions in personal life and community life. Roads are very large and beautiful, and in the middle of two roads different kinds of flowers are well planted and decorated, at night street lights are just like the stars in the sky. But in Nagaland we see the rich in personal life but poor in community life. We don`t see any beautiful and good condition of community`s properties. It is because of corruption in the community. Corruption is like an incurable disease and it brings/causes many social and economical evils in the community, it damages the moral and ethical fibres of the civilisation. Corruption breeds many evils in the community. Today, Naga community is in a pathetic condition. Though we are rich in personal life we are very poor in community life. So, until and unless we improve/ progress the community life we will be behind of the other states of India in this advancing world. For which, we the Nagas need to give our best effort to eradicate all kinds of corruptions in our land for improving our community life. First priority should be given to improvement of the roads; the roads of the Nagaland are full of Potholes. In many places vehicles are playing through the effort of the public and NGOs, even Churches are repairing the roads. Deplorable condition of the road pulls down the economical life of the people, because the fare and hire of the vehicle is charged on the Kilometres and the condition of the road. In today’s, world vehicles are very important, rich peoples are using different kinds of vehicles, even poor people need to have at least two Wheeler’ or bicycle. There are more than one lakhs different kinds of vehicles in Nagaland, so, how much Nagas` economical life is pulling down by the deplorable condition of the roads, Therefore, right thinkers of the Naga leaders should be serious in improving the Naga community life, especially for solving the economical life of the Nagas pulling down by the deplorable condition of the road. P. Inaho Yeptho, Pastor Nikiqhe Village

Infact, it is true that the present situation was created through some public like him(claim as) Deputy In-charge MIP where the situation started as soon as his entry to GDRN from NPGN, but no official appointment nor his enrollment was recorded in GDRN ,as his past remarks makes collective leaders to place him under Probation. Therefore, he is adviced not to interfere in the affairs of NNC/GDRN(NonAccord) as this issue is national issue and shall be solve by national workers not mere public like him and also advice not to spend too much, trying to convert this episodes in support of Kiumukam. As Nagas knows you through your write up. MIP GDRN/NNC(Non-Accord)

exam. 5. In state rules, there’s nothing as such mentioned 40% cut off mark that require by the candidates but they have only spelled out that “required minimum qualifying mark” so what is mean by “minimum” for them? According to this clause of the state rules, any candidates who appeared/ sit for NSEE II exam 2016 is qualified to study MBBS & BDS courses. 6. Since state rules is standing, we can’t take MCI guidelines and we can’t allow two rules in one exam to enforce. 7. There’s a reservation for Backward Tribes however the cut off mark is same for both General and BTs which shows that in reality the reservation has no meaning. 8. As per the MCI rules it has empowered the state with a DISCRETION power to lower down the minimum mark in consultation with the Medical Council of India (MCI), if the maximum number/s of the respective category couldn’t reach the minimum qualifying marks. (9) The ENCSU also wants to let the World aware of 2014 scenario, When there wasn’t State Level Exam but only AIPMT, so unfortunately only 1 Naga could reach the so called 40% cut off mark so what the government did, they conducted another exam to fill the unfilled seats in the form of Nagaland State Pre Medical Test (NSPMT) but here too only 22 candidates could reach the the required numbers. Again to fill the remaining 20 plus vacant seats, the government and department has used another mechanism by compiling the marks of AIPMT &

NSPMT and send the Students to study the MBBS & BDS courses. So why not the same mechanism be applied when the candidates from BTs couldn’t reach the cut off mark? They can do for others but not for people who had enough of discrimination, deprivation and struggling to reach the par with rest of the society? (10) It is also surprised to see an arrangement of NSEE II Results. The Common Selection Board (CSB) had put the Students who secured more marks in Backward/ reserved category whereas the Students who secured less mark are in merit list. ENCSU therefore appeal the general public to analyse the results carefully and judge accordingly. (11) Therefore, we humbly appeal all not to pull the issue in Tribal line or shouldn’t take it individually because what we are doing is for future. Manipulation and deprivation has amounted Corruption in our system. Whatever situation comes, the ENCSU will not compromise with our stand until 4 missing seats are given back. With the above cited reason/s, the ENCSU is being fighting for justice because above points has clearly show whether the Department has done justice in the selection. Therefore, the ENCSU once again appealed the general public not to misjudged the stands of the ENCSU. And the Union also ask any individual having doubt on our stands to come forward and clarify the confusion. Longre Chang, Chairman, ENCSU & Nokchem Angth, Jt. Secy, ENCSU

Shahabuddin walks out of jail, calls Lalu his leader

Mohammad Shahabuddin being greeted by supporters after being released on bail after 12 years of imprisonment in Bhagalpur on Saturday. (PTI) BHAGALPUR (BIHAR), SEP 10 (IANS): Former RJD MP and criminal-turnedpolitician Shahabuddin was released from prison after 11 long years on Saturday to a tumultuous welcome by hundreds of cheering supporters. And soon after he walked out of the Bhagalpur Central Jail, Shahabuddin stirred up a row by saying that his leader was RJD’s Lalu Prasad, not Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. “My leader was Lalu Prasad, my leader is Lalu Prasad and my leader will be Lalu Prasad,” Shahabuddin

told the media. “Nitish Kumar changes his stance according to the situation,” he said. “He is not my leader. Lalu will always be my leader.” Senior JD-U leader Shayam Rajak countered that Nitish Kumar was the leader of entire Bihar. Shahabuddin claimed that he was framed in criminal cases and politics had nothing to with the bail the Patna High Court granted him four days ago in a case related to the killing of a murder witness. He is facing 35 criminal cases including murder,

extortion and kidnapping. He was convicted in seven cases. State BJP President Mangal Pandey said: “Shahabuddin’s release has vindicated our stand that the state government is keen to leave the state at the mercy of criminals. BJP won’t let this happen.” According to police, Shahabuddin came out of the jail at 7 a.m. and he left immediately for Siwan, his home district, in a convey that included hundreds of SUVs. A large number of RJD supporters greeted him on the

way. His car first stopped in Khagaria district where slogan-shouting crowds greeted him. In Samastipur, a massive crowd showered him with flowers and garlanded his vehicles. Shahabuddin said it was wrong to describe him as a terror-monger. “It was the court that sent me to jail and it is the court that has granted me bail. All this is part of the judicial process.” Celebrations erupted in his native village and other places organised by his supporters, mostly local RJD leaders and workers. RJD legislator Hari Narayan Yadav said: “Bihar ke log unhe Bhagwan maante hain.” (People of Bihar feel he is a god). Shahabuddin’s wife Hina contested two Lok Sabha elections when he was in jail from Siwan but without success. Before his arrest in 2005, he was a Rashtriya Janata Dal MP - and a law unto himself. He was four times the RJD MP from Siwan - from 1996 to 2009. Shahabuddin’s rise as a muscleman began when he was elected an independent legislator. His terror in Siwan lasted for over two decades. But many also saw him as a Robin Hood. He gained popularity after ordering Siwan’s doctors and lawyers in the mid 1990s to stop charging patients and clients exorbitant fees.

All NGOs must fall on line and work under law: Rijiju NEW DELHI, SEP 10 (PTI): Amidst the ongoing crackdown on NGOs, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju today said all voluntary organisations must fall on line and abide by law and no genuine organisation should be fearful of government action. Rijiju said thousands of NGOs, which were registered under the Foreign Contribution Regulations Act were functioning in a very casual approach and disregarding law. “When we started monitoring their works, they started accusing us of harassing them. But we made it clear that the NGOs must end the casual approach. They must fall on line and follow law. “No genuine NGO doing legitimate work should be worried as we are making the whole FCRA registration process online and transparent. If an NGO is not doing any wrong, why should it be fearful,” he said addressing a seminar on ‘International terrorism - how we are being affected’. The Minister of State for Home’s comment came amidst the ongoing crackdown of NGOs for their alleged illegal activities. FCRA licence of 14,255 NGOs were cancelled between 2006-07 to 2011-12 fiscals. Consequently, registration of 4,138 associations was cancelled in July 2012 and 10,117 in March, 2015. Recently, registration of several NGOs run by high-profile public figures like Teesta Setalvad were cancelled.

NEW DELHI, SEP 10 (PTI): The Delhi Police, which is conducting a preliminary enquiry into the allegations of phone tapping of politicians, bureaucrats, industrialists and many other highprofile people by corporate major Essar Group, today questioned the complainant in the case Suren Uppal for over two hours. Uppal was called for questioning by the special investigation team constituted by Delhi Police at its headquarters at around 11 am and was asked questions on a wide array of issues including his allegations and the evidences he claimed to have in support of his charges of phone tapping by the corporate major, sources said. He was asked by the SIT officials led by a Special Commissioner rank officer about documentary evidences including log books, handwritten notes as well as recordings of some top politicians and other high-profile persons he claimed to possess, they said. Uppal said he was questioned by a team of five officials for over two hours and he agreed to provide all evidences he has with him in support of his allegations. “I was questioned for over two hours by the officials.

NEW DELHI, SEP 10 (PTI): BJP leader Ram Madhav today favoured tough action to control the current unrest in Jammu and Kashmir and said separatists should give up the agitational path and consider dialogue. The party general secretary also said the PDPBJP government in the state would last its full term as long the two parties abide by the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) and tackle the situation in an appropriate manner. “There is a concern, that we probably have not tackled it (situation) effectively. We have allowed certain things to drift. Time has come for us to act tough and control the situation in the larger interest of the people of the valley as also the larger interest of India’s integrity,” he told Karan Thapar on India Today TV. On the national mainstream parties’ demand for talks with Hurriyat, Madhav said they were free to talk to the state government as the CMP says that the state government was ready to talk to all stakeholders including the separatists. “Ver y much. They should give up their agitational politics which is not going to yield them anything. I am telling them very clearly,” he said to a question whether the ball was in the Hurriyat’s

court. Madhav said even though some members of the all-party delegation had approached separatists, their response was negative as they seem only interested in instigating violence. “These leaders (separatists) are not really interested in peace, not interested in dialogue. They are interested in violence, getting children killed. “The message from our side has gone through the (allparty delegation’s) visit. But this adventure (the snubbed outreach to the separatist leaders ) that happened as a side show definitely conveys to a large section of Kashmiri people that these leaders are really not interested in any dialogue or solution. They only want to perpetuate the disturbance and violence in Kashmir,” he said. On the issue of autonomy, he said “my party’s stand is very clear. That there is enough freedom and enough laws to help the state.” “Whatever is there is enough. But anything more that they demand needs to be there within the framework of Indian Constitution,” he said, dubbing as “political posturing” the demands made by Congress leader P Chidambaram and CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury for more autonomy to be given to the state.

JAMSHEDPUR, SEP 10 (PTI): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today claimed the ban imposed on sale of liquor by his government has checked incidence of domestic violence in the state and expressed hope it will help improve purchasing power of the people. “There is no political goal behind the decision to impose ban on sale of liquor in Bihar, but to bring in social reform,” Kumar, who was in the Steel City to take part in Karma Mahotsav organised by a social organisation of Kurmi Community ‘Kurmi Sena’, said. “Liquor consumers have been spending Rs 10,000 crore, which is now saved and will help improve their purchasing power,” Kumar told reporters here. Liquor had ruined many families and the state had witnessed violence due to it before the ban was imposed by his government, Kumar said, adding peace prevailed and family atmosphere has improved ever since the ban. “We did not have any political goal behind imposing the ban on sale of liquor,

good work going. “It will not only motivate the good-doers, but the youth will be inspired for self-employable initiatives,” the Union Minister said. He also called upon the media “not to dilute” the country’s rich culture and heritage. “Social consciousness is very important for media... Obscenity, vulgarity and violence are causing havoc in our society... It must be avoided... It is not in our culture and media organisations must not dilute our culture and heritage,” he said.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar welcomed by party workers at Birsa Munda international airport, Hinoo in Ranchi on Saturday. (PTI) but wanted to bring in social reform, which is now being witnessed in the state,” he said. “I have raised the issue after people of Jharkhand, particularly women from Bokaro and Dhanbad, requested to take up the issue of imposing liquor ban in the state, but the state government is not listening,” he said. “It is not because of any political rivalry, but an advice for the benefit of the society,”

Kumar said. “Around Rs 5,000 crore revenue was being generated on account of excise/value added tax (VAT), but we preferred to forgo it for a good social cause,” the Bihar Chief Minister claimed assuring that the revenue loss would be compensated. Regretting that expected development had not taken place in Jharkhand during the last 16 years, Kumar said the the mineral rich state should have been number one.

NEW DELHI, SEP 10 (IANS): On a day Andhra Pradesh saw a shutdown after the central government announced a special package for it rather than the special status it was demanding, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday met a delegation of BJP leaders from the state and urged them to work for its development. “A BJP delegation from Andhra Pradesh met the Prime Minister,” said a brief tweet from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The Andhra Pradesh leaders thanked Prime Minister for the special package, party sources said. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday announced a special economic package for Andhra Pradesh, clarifying that the state will get monetary advantage equivalent to what it would have got if it was accorded the special category status. Jaitley had, however, said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement made in Rajya Sabha on February 20, 2014 for according special status to Andhra Pradesh cannot be implemented as the 14th Finance Commission has recommended that the special category status can be given to only hill and northeastern states. “A total of Rs 22,113

BHUBANESWAR, SEP 10 (PTI): Noting that the media in recent times has become “aggressive” to get high television rating points (TRPs), Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting M Venkaiah Naidu today said self-regulatory mechanism adopted by the media should be fair and strict. Addressing a CSR conclave here, Naidu said media should carry development news to the people for overall growth of the society. “Unfortunately, media, particularly the electronics media, has becoming aggressive. Self-regulatory mechanism adopted by the press should be fair and strict,” he said. Stating that media’s role should be “constructive and positive” instead of making it a practice of serving sensational stories aiming high viewership, Naidu said news channels must dedicate some space for developmental stories. “Sensationalism and yellow journalism can erode the confidence of news consumers. The responsibility of the media sector is not just providing news, but providing factually correct news. It should be of utmost importance that the news provided is not biased and partitioned,” he said. He said if the media maintains quality, TRP should not be a problem for it. “Social media is playing an extremely important role and is competing with

Also, net profits of the banks have come down from Rs 79,465 crore in March 2015 to Rs 32,285 crore in March 2016, he said. Rising NPAs is “not a desirable situation,” he said, adding those resources must be available for commercial disbursement. Rajan, who completed his three-year term as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India on September 4, had forced banks to recognize the true state of their bad loans. This culminated in a six-month asset-quality review that led to banks reporting a surge in bad-debt disclosures and higher losses this year. Mukherjee said Indian economy and its banking system has done reasonable well considering “indiscretion of a private bank (abroad) could create such an international financial crisis from which world is yet to recover.”

On the other hand, gold held steady at Rs 31,150 per 10 grams in scattered deals. Traders said besides weak trend overseas, reduced off-take by industrial units and coin makers in local spot market pulled down silver prices. Surana added the current slump in the oil market will not dampen the company’s expansion plans. “We may be surplus now and the trend will continue for some time. But at some point, it is expected demand will take over demand,” he said. India’s current refining capacity is at 230 mtpa and the country is projected to require 329 mtpa of refining capacity by 2030. The company will also spend Rs 26,160 crore on its marketing business. “We are going at a faster rate in adding our marketing capacity and it will always be ahead of our refining capacity,” Surana added. On its expected marketing margins, J Ramaswamy, director-finance, HPCL, said, “Marketing margins grew at five-six per cent year-on-year and we are hopeful it will continue.” On its planned Rs 37,000 crore Rajasthan refinery, HPCL said it continues to remain at the discussion stage and expects more clarity on this project’s feasibility in the next two-three months. “A committee has been formed and we expect a conclusion in the next two-three months,” said a company official. For its retail business, the company plans to add another 500 retail outlets by the end of this financial year (FY17). The company currently operates more than 13,802 retail outlets.

KOLKATA, Sep 10 (Agencies): The Reserve Bank of India has urged people to go for a fact checking before investment as cases of people being duped by misleading advertisements are on the rise. This comes a day after investors of Senco Jewellery Palace Abhusan claimed that they were lured by such advertisements. Investors like Madan Koley, who had invested Rs 10 lakh with the company, said advertisement was the trigger for investment. “Such schemes are quite common with the jewellery industry. There were advertisements in newspapers and on television. I never imagined landing up like this,” he said. Anita Adhikari, a resident of Sonarpur had invested Rs 2.5 lakh with the company through monthly investment scheme (MIS). She had seen advertisements and hoardings for the two schemes ‘Dhanvriddhi’ and ‘Swarnatrisha’ floated by the company. The entire amount she deposited with the company two years ago was not refunded to her. According to RBI, misleading advertisements promising abnormally high returns have already played a havoc. So far, there have been 200 cases where companies have put out such false advertisements and amassed money from investors.

Chennai, Sep 10 (PTI): Just retired RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan’s clean-up of more than USD 100 billion of stressed assets on the books of banks today came in for praise from President Pranab Mukherjee who felt rising NPAs are not a desirable situation. “Of course more than often you listen to NPAs of banking system, which is no doubt a matter of concern. And Governor of RBI who has just retired, Mr Rajan, took many appropriate steps to put the system in the right direction,” he said at the centenary celebrations of Karur Vysya Bank here. The stressed advances to gross advances of scheduled commercial banks have increased from 10.90 per cent in March 2015 to 11.40 per cent in March 2016, he said, adding the aggregate provisions for NPAs has increased from Rs 73,887 crore to Rs 1,70,630 crore.

2-3 a kg. The Centre in June had extended the 25 per cent import duty on wheat for an unspecified period. Traders and mill owners said a sharp drop in availability due to less production and tight market conditions was pushing up the price. Private traders have already imported about 600,000 tonnes of wheat; more is expected if the duty is lowered. Commodity expert Tejinder Narang told Reuters news agency last week he expected private wheat imports to be four to six million tonnes, as the domestic crop is lower than earlier estimated. In a sign of tightening supplies, the government had last month lowered the quantity of wheat that private flour millers could buy through open market sale to 500 tonnes, from the earlier 5,000 tonnes.

These are meant to improve their supply, particularly during the festival months of October to December. Officials said a formal announcement would be after the proposals are cleared by the Union Cabinet. The issue of price increase in wheat and edible oils was discussed recently by top officials. United Nations, Sep 10 (PTI): The UN Security Council has threatened to impose a new raft of sanctions against North Korea as it strongly condemned Pyongyang’s fifth nuclear test, terming it a “threat” to international peace and security. The 15-member powerful UN body held urgent consultations here yesterday to address the “serious situation” arising from Korea’s atomic test - believed to be its most powerful ever. Strongly condemning the test, the Council said it is a clear violation and in flagrant disregard of Security Council resolutions and of the non-proliferation regime and “therefore a clear threat to international peace and security continues to exist.” The Council members said they have previously expressed their determination to take “further significant measures” in the event of another nuclear test by North Korea. “In line with this commitment and the gravity of this violation, the members of the Security Council will begin to work immediately on appropriate measures,” they said. The US and France

urged the Council members to push ahead with new sanctions against North Korea, saying its repeated tests show “complete disregard” for international law. Terming the latest nuclear test as “more than brazen defiance”, US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power said the Council must send a “clear, united and strong message that the international community will never accept a nuclear North Korea. The Council must take further, decisive action that forces North Korea to change its calculus.” Power said the Council will take additional significant steps, including new sanctions, to demonstrate to North Korea that there are “consequences to its unlawful and dangerous actions.” China’s UN Ambassador Liu Jieyi told reporters that “all sides should refrain from mutual provocation and any action that might exacerbate the situation.” French envoy to the François Delattre said the latest nuclear test by North Korea is more than a grave provocation. “North Korea will have to bear the consequences of its acts and provocations,” he

Al-Qaida chief threatens ‘thousands’ of 9/11 attacks DUBAI/Washington, Sep 10 (Agencies): AlQaida chief Ayman al-Zawahiri threatened the US that the September 11, 2001 attacks will be repeated “thousands of times”, in a video marking the 15th anniversary of the deadly assault. Addressing the United States in a video message posted Thursday on YouTube, Zawahiri blamed 9/11 on “your crimes against us”. He said that if these continue, 9/11 “will be repeated thousands of times”. On September 11, 2001, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were struck by hijacked aircraft, claiming 2,753 lives. Further deadly attacks that day were carried out against the Pentagon and on a third commercial aircraft that crashed in rural Pennsylvania. In the video, Zawahiri cited Washington’s policies towards Arab and Muslim countries, its “occupation” of lands in their countries, and support for their “criminal and corrupt” governments. His threats come as American officials say the United States has become hardened against such welldeveloped plots as 9/11 but remains vulnerable to small

and home-grown attacks. The 9/11 attacks spawned Washington’s socalled war on terror, which initially focused on al-Qaida and the Taliban, before later targeting the Islamic State group which has seized territory in Syria, Iraq and Libya. Bill passes allowing 9/11 victims to sue Saudis, despite White House veto threat

The White House on Friday reiterated that President Barack Obama would veto a bill that would allow the families of the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks to sue Saudi Arabia’s government for damages. The House of Representatives was expected to vote on the bill on Friday. The Senate passed it unanimously in May. “We are in the same place we were the last time,” the White House official said on Friday. Both Obama and a White House spokesman said in April the president would veto the bill.

WASHINGTON, Sep 10 (PTI): Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has accused former secretary of state and his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton of committing greatest foreign policy blunders, triggering massive global disorder. “Hillary Clinton has presided over the greatest series of foreign policy failures and blunders anyone has ever seen. Her policies have produced massive global disorder,” Trump said at an election rally in Florida. Clinton, who served as the secretary of state in the first term of the Obama Administration, handed Iraq over to ISIS, unleashing that terror group onto the world, he alleged. “She helped destabilise Egypt by supporting the ouster of President (Hosni) Mubarak in exchange for the Muslim Brotherhood. Fortunately, President El-Sisi is now in-charge, but terrorists have gained a foothold in that country. She helped push Syria into a prolonged civil war by pushing regime change in that country too - without any plan for the day after,”

Dhaka, Sep 10 (PTI): At least 25 people were killed and over 70 injured, many critically, in a huge fire triggered by a boiler explosion at a packaging factory in Bangladesh today, in one of the worst industrial accidents in the country since 2013 when a building collapse claimed more than 1,100 lives. The fire broke out following a boiler explosion at the four-storey Tempako Packaging Factory this morning in Tongi industrial area, north of Dhaka, said Gazipur Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Assistant Director Akhtaruzzaman. The blast was so powerful that a part of the building collapsed as the blaze - aided by strong winds - razed until afternoon despite frantic efforts by firefighters to contain it. About 100 people were inside the food and cigarette packaging unit when the explosion occurred and the fire spread quickly because of flammable chemicals stored in the building. “A part of the building collapsed and we fear some people could be trapped inside,” a fire department official said. The workers at the factory were to go on leave for a weeklong holiday for Eid festival after their work today. “The Eid is ruined for

And of course, Hillary Clinton failed with her Russian Reset. She gave up missile defense in Poland and the Czech Republic in exchange for nothing in return. Then, she gave up 20 per cent of US uranium to Russia -while those who benefited from the deal gave money to the Clintons,” he said. “Let’s not forget, Russia went into Crimea on President (Barack) Obama’s watch. Unlike Clinton and Obama, we will negotiate with Russia from a position of strength not weakness. And weakness is all we get from President Obama and Hillary Clinton,” he said. “The difference between me and my opponent on Vladimir Putin, and in all negotiations, is that I negotiate by creating leverage so I can extract a good deal for the United State,” Trump said, adding that Clinton negotiates but never gets anything of value for the United States. “Putin laughs at our

leaders, and takes them to the cleaners again and again. That is why we will rebuild our military, strengthen our economy, and regain our position of leadership in the world - so we can negotiate from a position of great strength once again,” he said. Trump said if he cannot get a good deal for the US, he will follow the example of Ronald Reagan and walk away. “I will end this legacy of failure and strongly defend the interests of the US,” he said. “But I will also keep focused on the ultimate goal. We will not seek endless conflict and hostility; we won’t get trapped in the failed approaches of the past. A future where America can find common ground with countries like Russia and China is a better future for our children,” Trump said. He said Clinton’s policies have produced only death and destruction, not diplomacy. Baghdad, Sep 10 (AFP): Two bomb blasts outside a shopping mall in central Baghdad claimed by the Islamic State group killed at least 13 people, security and medical officials said today. The bombings were the latest in a series of deadly attacks at Baghdad shopping centres this year that have been claimed by IS, including one that killed more than 300 people in early July. The jihadist group issued an online statement on the attack, saying it targeted Shiites and was carried out by two Iraqi suicide bombers, one of whom wore an explosive belt and another who drove an explosives-rigged vehicle. IS and other Sunni extremists consider Shiite Muslims to be heretics, and frequently target them in bombings. The statement said the bomber who drove the explosives-rigged vehicle was from Fallujah, a city west of Baghdad that was retaken from IS in late June. The blasts, which hit just before midnight last night, shattered windows at the multi-storey Nakheel Mall on Palestine Street in the city centre, and damaged a fence surrounding it.

Colombo, Sep 10 (PTI): Sri Lanka’s new constitution is for all Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims, President Maithripala Sirisena said today as he stressed on the need of achieving reconciliation based on communal harmony. Addressing an event to mark the 70th anniversary of United National Party (UNP), Sirisena recalled that the UNP’s founder leader, D S Senanayake, had called for a Sri Lankan identity built on the support of all communities, seventy years ago in 1946. “The new constitution is for all Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims,” he said.. “Over the last 70 years we have not been able to build that Sri Lankan identity,” he said. “We are still trying to achieve reconciliation based on communal harmony”. Sirisena’s unity government formed with the UNP is currently in the process of formulating a new Constitution to replace the existing 1978 statute. Sirisena said the opposition led by the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was spreading rumors and misinformation about the new Constitution.

I s l a m a ba d, S e p 1 0 (PTI): Pakistan government has come under fire from the opposition which accused it of hiding the details of the probe into Pakistani nationals’ involvement in the Pathankot terror attack, prompting Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to announce that the findings would be made public. The Express Tribune reported that the senator accused the government of misleading the Senate by deliberately concealing information from them and went to the extent of alleging that the government was patronising militants. “Why else did the government not share details of the investigation into the alleged involvement of Pakistani nationals in the Pathankot attack with the House?” He said government had failed to respond to question asked four months ago.

said, adding that more importantly, new sanctions are “indispensable.” UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also strongly condemned the underground nuclear test and said, “This is yet another brazen breach of the resolutions of the Security Council.” “This unacceptable act endangers peace and security in the region and is another vivid reminder of the urgent need to strengthen the global nuclear test ban regime,” he stressed. Comprehensive NuclearTest-Ban Treaty Organisation CTBTO Executive Secretary Lassina Zerbo called the tests a frightening, unfortunate and serious breach of the norms adopted by the international community. International Atomic Energy Agency DirectorGeneral Yukiya Amano called it a “deeply troubling and regrettable act”. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein also designated two independent human rights experts to support the work of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in North Korea Tomas Ojea Quintana.

He disclosed that the film which is shot in Hindi and Nagamese dialect will have subtitles of different languages like English, Japanese, Korean etc. Lama recalled how he got motivated to work in the Northeast and during that time he came across the inspiring story of Mhonbeni which propelled him to initiate a research on the girl. He sent his cousins to locate the girl and after necessary paperworks were completed, he personally came to survey the locations where he can shoot and during that time he even visited Dzßkou valley. He narrated that although he really wanted to shoot the film at Dzßkou he could not get the clearance to land choppers in the valley which forced him to scrape the idea and change the location to the neighbouring villages. Wrapping up the shooting in 10 days with five cameras which otherwise would have taken more than 20 days, Lama said the post production would now take minimum five to six month as it would determine the output and its possibility to be screened at international film festivals. Answering to a query, Lama said he wants to come back to Nagaland in the future for more projects. Proprietor of Find Studio Production House Mumbai, Rebecca Chanakija, who did the casting for Nani Teri Morni, said the state government needed to play more active role in facilitating visitors so as to attract more of such projects to the state. The film is expected to be a dominant children’s movie which would even attract international buyers. (Staff Reporter)

my best.” Djokovic will attempt to win his third US Open and 13th Grand Slam title on Sunday, while Wawrinka - who beat Djokovic in last year’s French Open final - is going for a third major victory and first at Flushing Meadows. Djokovic had spent only six hours and 24 minutes on court in reaching the semifinals, thanks in part to one walkover and two retirements, and he was within sight of another swift contest against Monfils. He led by two sets and a break as Monfils spent much of the first hour hitting the ball at half-pace, barely moving during, as well as between, points and at one stage limping theatrically. However, he raced forward to collect a drop shot and break back in the third set, sparking a run of five straight games. Djokovic’s fortunes took a nosedive, first as he called for treatment to his left

shoulder and then as three break-back points slipped by, and with them the set, prompting him to rip his shirt in frustration. Monfils, 30, was back in the match but he was hardly fizzing with energy, calling for the trainer early in the fourth set, bending double at every opportunity and even drinking a Coca-Cola at one changeover. Djokovic handed another break of serve straight back with a double fault, but after a second medical timeout - this time for his right shoulder - the two-time champion clinched victory with a winner on match point that flew past an almost stationary Monfils. Wawrinka and Nishikori played out another gruelling contest as the temperature and humidity remained brutal for the second semi-final, with the Swiss proving just the stronger. Nishikori looked sharper for the best part of two sets but was pegged back by Wawrinka

with a break at the end of the second. The Japanese player appeared to be suffering for his four-hour quarter-final win over Andy Murray but he recovered from 4-1 down in the third to level, with play interrupted briefly as rain forced the roof to be closed. A relieved Wawrinka let out a huge roar when he saved a break point at 4-4 and powered through five straight games to move a break up in the fourth. There was one final push from Nishikori, who broke back when Wawrinka played a woeful service game at 3-2, but the former French and Australian Open champion reeled off another three games in a row to clinch victory. “Kei is a tough player and he played well from the beginning,” said Wawrinka. “I had to wait and fight and make him a bit uncomfortable and he started to get tired. That is when I put my game to be aggressive. To be in the final is something crazy.”

City edge United in Manchester derby

Ibrahimovic (second left) tries to find space between City defenders Nicolas Otamendi (left) and John Stones during their EPL match on Saturday. London Sep 10 (Agencies): Kevin de Bruyne produced a midfield masterclass, as Manchester City beat Manchester United 2-1 in the derby at Old Trafford on Saturday. The Belgium midfielder, sold by then Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho in 2014, showed the Portuguese just how much he misjudged his talent by delivering on the big stage as City extended their 100% Premier League win record to four matches. Pep Guardiola’s side top the Premier League table with 12 points from four matches, while United slip to third after dropping points for the first time this season.

City blew United away in the opening stages, and took the lead in the 15th minute when de Bruyne took advantage of some poor Daley Blind defending to nip on to Kelechi Iheanacho’s flick on before steering a cool finish past United goalkeeper David de Gea. And the Belgian set up the Nigerian youngster for the second on 36 minutes, the 19-year-old tapping in after de Bruyne’s angled shot had hit the post to become the youngest goalscorer ever in a Manchester Premier League derby. United were being overrun in midfield, with Jesse Lingard and Wayne Rooney

anonymous and Henrikh Mkhitaryan completely off the pace in his first Premier League start. Jose Mourinho may have lost the tactical battle, but United were thrown a lifeline on 42 minutes, when City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo dropped a Wayne Rooney free-kick into the box, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic arced his body Cantona ‘96-style to drive home into the empty net. The Swede’s goal means he becomes the first player to score in the Manchester derby, the Milan derby, the Barcelona derby, El Clasico and the Derby D’Italia.

Mourinho made two changes at the break, admitting his selection error by replacing Lingard and Mkhitaryan with Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera. And it was Rashford, the academy graduate from Wythenshawe, who again revitalised this expensively-assembled United team, setting up a chance for Ibrahimovic on 48 minutes then seeing a 71th-minute goal chalked off for offside after the Swede got a slight touch on his shot. United were equally inspired by the travails of Bravo, who looked all-at-sea at being thrown into a Manchester derby on his Premier League debut. The City goalkeeper, signed for £17m from Barcelona in August, almost gave away a penalty on 57 minutes after his heavy touch gave Rooney a chance to nick the ball back, but referee Mark Clattenburg ruled the Chilean’s flying challenge on the England captain was a fair tackle. But City regained their composure as the second half wore on, and were denied a third by the woodwork with 15 minutes to go, as de Bruyne’s shot from substitute Leroy Sane’s pass hit de Gea’s post and rolled along the goalline. Zurich, Sep 10 (IANS): World football’s governing body FIFA’s Ethics Committee has announced the suspension for life of former Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) president Jeffrey Webb for taking bribes. Webb, who will also be fined $1 million, can never take part in any soccer-related activities at national and international levels, the Ethics Committee, chaired by HansJoachim Eckert declared on Friday, reports Efe. “The adjudicatory chamber of the Ethics Committee chaired by Hans-Joachim Eckert has banned Jeffrey Webb, former president of CONCACAF, vice president of FIFA and president of the Cayman Islands Football Association, for life from all football-related activities on a national and international level,” FIFA said in a state-

ment. “The ban comes into force immediately.” The investigation against 51-year-old Webb was opened on May 27, 2015 by Cornel Borbely, chairman of the investigatory chamber of the Ethics Committee, after an indictment from a United States District Court. Webb was arrested in Switzerland last May and extradited to the US. He was part of an indictment of nine football officials and five marketing executives over a $150m bribery and kickback racket. He was accused of soliciting and accepting millions of dollars in bribes from marketing firms and executives in exchange for sponsorship and media rights for regional tournaments. On November 23, 2015, Webb pleaded guilty to one count of racketeering conspiracy, three counts of fraud and corruption and another of money laundering.

The 21-year-old Thangavelu, who was merely five-years-old when his right leg was crushed by a speeding bus while he was on his way to school, joined Murlikant Petkar (1972, swimming) and Devendra Jhajharia (2004, javelin throw) in the Indian Paralympics gold club. Thangavelu won the yellow metal with his best jump of 1.89m, leaving behind world champion Sam Grewe of the USA who registered 1.86m. Bhati’s best effort was also 1.86m but he had to settle for the bronze medal on count-back, making it the first

instance of two Indians finishing on the podium in the same event of a Paralympic Games. The T-42 classification is for athletes with lower limb deficiency, leg length difference, impaired muscle power or impaired range of movement. In the same event, there was disappointment for another Indian athlete Sharad Kumar who failed to finish on the podium. Kumar had led the pack at one stage after clearing 1.55m and 1.60m but his best jump was only 1.77m which placed him at the sixth position overall. The event witnessed massive competition as six out of the 12 para athletes cleared the 1.74m mark in their first eight attempts. In his 10th attempt, Thangavelu jumped 1.77m successfully, along with three others – Poland’s Lukasz Mamczarz, China’s Zhiqiang

nis squad including 14-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal and World No.13 David Ferrer for the contest. World No.5 Nadal will headline a strong squad also including doubles specialists Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez.

Zhing and countrymate Kumar. In the later stages with the contest being reduced to only three competitors, Bhati set the tone with a jump of 1.83m mark along with Thagavelu. However, just when it looked like India would fetch a gold and a silver, the American cleared 1.86m to grab the top spot but the Indians also equalled the height to make it even. Eventually, in a nail-biting finale, Thangavelu grabbed the top honours by finishing with a jump of 1.89m. In other events, Sandeep and Narender Ranbir finished 4th and 6th resepectively in F-42 Javelin Throw competition with personal best throws of 54.30m and 53.79m.

No request from Brazilian police to interview Bach: IOC Rio de Janeiro, Sep 10 (IANS): The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said that it has not received any request from Brazilian police to interview its president Thomas Bach in relation to an Olympic ticketing racket. In a statement on Friday, the IOC said: “Neither the IOC nor the IOC President have been contacted by any Brazilian authority concerning a request for information. The IOC is in this respect only informed by media,” reports Xinhua news agency. On Thursday, the Brazilian police announced that they wanted to interview Bach for his alleged links to a ring that sought to illegally sell tickets at a marked-up cost during the 2016 Rio Olympics. According to Ronaldo Oliveira, a senior police officer, the investigation would call on Bach as a witness to clarify certain allegations found in emails that named him as part of the ring. On August 17, police arrested Patrick Hickey, who was president then of the Irish

Olympic Committee, and Irish businessman Kevin Mallon in connection with this ticketing scandal. During the Games, police seized 781 tickets which they alleged were going to be sold on the black market. The investigation has also found an e-mail from Hickey to Bach, asking for 500 extra tickets to various events. While no reply was made to that specific e-mail, shortly after, the IOC delivered a further 296 tickets to the Irish committee. On Friday, Rio’s Police Commissioner Aloysio Falcao clarified at a press conference that Bach would be called as a witness if he came to Brazil but added “this does not make him a suspect in the case”. Earlier this week, the IOC announced that Bach had no plans to attend the Paralympic Games, being held from September 7-18 in Rio, stating that he was to attend a ceremony in honor of the deceased former German president Walter Scheel.

New York, Sep 10 (IANS): The unseeded duo of Germany’s Laura Siegemund and Croatia’s Mate Pavic defeated the seventh-seeded American pair of Coco Vandeweghe and Rajeev Ram 6-4, 6-4 to win the US Open mixed doubles tennis title. All four players were seeking their first major title, while Vandeweghe was the only player who had previously played in a Grand Slam final, having finished runner-up in the 2014 Australian Open mixed doubles event. The Americans dropped serve on an unforced volley error by Vandeweghe in the ninth game, giving Siegemund and Pavic the opening they needed to wrap up the first set in 36 minutes, although not before squandering a 40-0 lead in the final game. The second set began with Ram and Pavic both losing their serves, although the Croatian made amends with some outstanding volleying that put Vandeweghe under constant pressure. Pavic’s play at the net paid dividends when the European duo broke Vandeweghe’s serve to go ahead 4-3 in the second set. A few games later, the Croatian confidently served out the match to secure a winners’ check of $150,000, which is to be divided equally between the two. Ram, who won the mixed doubles silver medal at the Rio Olympics along with partner Venus Williams, and Vandeweghe will share $70,000 in prize money.
