PM Modi’s silence attracts ire ROW OVER SOCIAL MEDIA ON KILLING OF JOURNALIST NEW DELHI, SEP 10 (AGENCIES): Brutal murder of a senior journalist-activist, Gauri Lankesh, which was subsequently cheered by right-wing trolls on social media, has sparked vociferous debates about journalistic freedom in a country that prides itself as the world’s largest democracy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi too has come under fire for keeping mum on the attack while following some of those Twitter trolls who posted spiteful and abusive messages on the microblogging site rejoicing over the journalist’s death. What drew, even more, anger was the fact that just moments after the murder, many self-proclaimed “nationalists” and supporters of the right-wing groups started celebrating the horrifying act on social media with some using disparaging remarks to describe the slain journalist, CGTN report stated. A particular Twitter account, which is followed by

Gauri’s fate awaits you, Kerala Hindu group leader warns writers

GUWAHATI, SEP 10 (AGENCIES): Former Assam chief minister, Tarun Gogoi has asked the BJPled government to make its stand clear on the vexed Assam-Nagaland boundary problem. “The Central government can give whatever it wants to the Naga groups... but all should be confined within Nagaland’s boundary,” Gogoi added. Referring to reports that the final agreement to the Naga issue may be signed before Christmas, Gogoi said making a hue and cry after the accord is signed would be of no use, The Assam Tribune report stated. “We need an assurance from the government now that the State’s boundary would not be altered. We want a solution (to the Naga issue) but not at the cost of Assam,” Gogoi told a press conference here. Stating that the Congress would not accept the demand of the NSCN (I-M) for unification of all Naga-inhabited areas, which includes parts of Assam, Gogoi charged the BJP-led government for not putting up a strong case in the Supreme Court which was hearing the inter-State border dispute. The veteran Congress

leader said the then Atal Behari Vajpayee government had proposed to extend the ceasefire with the Naga group to areas in Assam, but he had opposed and thwarted that move. The Congress leader also took at a dig at the BJP for not mentioning the names of Mahatma Gandhi and first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in the general knowledge book, which was distributed among children recently. “The BJP is trying to distort the history of the country. They can name the first Deputy Prime Minister in the book, but not the first Prime Minister,” he said. Training his guns at Assam BJP, he described Sarbananda Sonowal as the “most impractical chief minister”. “He is giving deadline after deadline but nothing has been met by the departments concerned. He had directed repair of all roads within 15 days, but see the condition of the roads now. He had directed repair of all embankments by March... what happened? On one hand they say they have launched a crusade against corruption, on the other one after another accused is getting bail as police is failing to file charge-sheets,” he added.

Apex body of sadhus release list of 14 ‘fake babas’ ALLAHABAD, SEP 10 (AGENCIES): The Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad on Sunday released a list of 14 “fake babas” and demanded a crackdown on “rootless cult leaders” by bringing in a legislation. The parishad is a council of akharas, which are monastic orders drawing their spiritual lineage from 8th-century seer Adi Shankara, who is said to have established orders of martial monks with the aim of defending the Hindu Dharma. Giving out the list, which includes names like Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, Rampal, Asaram and his son Narayan Sai, the parishad’s president Swami Narendra Giri said, “We appeal to even the common people to beware of such charlatans who belong to no tradition and by their questionable acts, bring disrepute to sadhus and sanyasis.” He added, “We are going to send copies of this list to the Centre, the state governments as well as all the opposition parties with the demand that a strong legislation be brought to check the activities of these self-styled cult leaders.” (More on p-5)

copy Trojan has been detected in India which steals money through victims’ mobile phones, cyber security firm Kaspersky said in a report. Around 40 per cent of target of the malware has been detected in India. “Kaspersky Lab experts have uncovered a mobile malware targeting the WAP billing payment method, stealing money through victims’ mobile accounts without their knowledge,” the report said. Xafecopy Trojan is disguised as useful apps like BatteryMaster, and operates normally. The trojan secretly loads malicious code onto the device. Once the app is activated, the Xafecopy malware clicks on web pages with Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) billing - a form of mobile payment

bill. After this the malware silently subscribes the phone to a number of services, the report said. The process also does not require user to register a debit or credit card or set up a user-name and password. The malware uses technology to bypass ‘captcha’ systems designed to protect users by confirming the action is being performed by a human. In the captcha system, websites show a set of some letter or numbers which are required to be manually filled by the user. “Xafecopy hit more than 4,800 users in 47 countries within the space of a month, with 37.5 per cent of the attacks detected and blocked by Kaspersky Lab products targeting India, followed by Russia, Turkey and Mexico,” the report said.

ing that cyber criminals gang promulgating other trojans are sharing malware code among themselves. “Our research suggests WAP billing attacks are on the rise. Xafecopy’s attacks targeted countries where this payment method is popular. The malware has also been detected with different modifications, such as the ability to text messages from a mobile device to premium-rate phone numbers, and to delete incoming text messages to hide alerts from mobile network operators about stolen money,” Kaspersky Lab Senior Malware Analyst Roman Unuchek said. Kaspersky Lab, Managing Director- South Asia, Altaf Halde said that Android users need to be extremely cautious in how they download apps.

NEW DELHI, SEP 10 (PTI): Government is moving ahead with linking Aadhaar with mobile SIM cards and all unlinked phones will be deactivated after February 2018, said informed sources. The sources said Aadhaar mobile linkage is being done as per orders of Supreme Court passed February this year in Lokniti foundation case and all SIM cards have to be verified with Aadhaar within a year from the date of judgement, with all unlinked phones to be deactivated after February next year, so criminals, fraudsters and terrorists cannot use the issued SIMs. It said that biometrics cannot be stored by the mobile operators nor they have access to any of the other personal data. They said biometrics collected should be encrypt-

ed by telecom company and sent to UIDAI at that moment itself and any storage of biometric by a service provider is a criminal offence punishable with up to three years of imprisonment under the Aadhaar Act 2016. Central government had told the SC that it would put in place, an effective mechanism for verification of pre-paid mobile users who constitute 90% of the total subscribers. Asking the government to put in place the mechanism for the verification of existing pre-paid mobile connection holders “as early as possible”, the court disposed of the petition by Lokniti Foundation seeking the scrutiny of the subscribers so that those having pre-paid mobile connections on fake identities are weeded out.

airports against terror and security threats, will soon launch a trial of the new system at Amritsar, Chandigarh, Varanasi, Udaipur, Dibrugarh, Nagpur, Managalore, Trichy, Pune and Ranchi airports. The force, along with other aviation security stakeholders, had started the regime at the Jaipur, Guwahati, Lucknow and Trivandrum, Patna and Chennai airports from June 1. It has already done away with the system at seven other air facilities in

Delhi, Mumbai, Cochin, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Ahmedabad, since April 1. Sources in aviation security said two airports at Bhubaneswar and Bagdogra could also have been brought under the new regime, with the four airports of Coimbatore, Kolkata, Indore and Vadodara yesterday, but some “infrastructural issues” delayed the move. The trial at the ten fresh airports will ensure that adequate security gadgets and logistics are provided at these facilities so that tight security measures are in place once the stamping of the hand baggage tags procedure is discontinued. By having the stamped tags on the hand baggage, the security personnel used to be assured that no weapon or ammunition like material enters the aircraft. It also pin points the accountability on the CISF personnel who clear the baggage.

With the deployment of smart cameras and repositioning of security paraphernalia at the ten airports after the trial period, the same objective is being achieved. A committee comprising officials of the CISF, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and the airport operators has been constituted early this year by the government to smoothen the roll-out of this new protocol at all the 59 airports guarded by the paramilitary force. DG Singh had maintained that the new measure will enhance “passenger experience and provide hassle free security environment to them” while travelling through the airports. The new protocols are only meant for domestic passengers and those travelling to international destinations will have to get their hand baggage tags stamped as usual.

raid on Kitovi’s house

DIMAPUR, SEP 10 (NPN): NSCN/GPRN (Reformation) through its MIP has strongly condemned the “barbaric and cowardice act of 5th Assam Rifles for provoking the peaceful atmosphere by raiding the house of Naga leader N. Kitovi, who is heading six Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs)” on September 5 evening. MIP said incidents like this should not only be condemned, but needed to be countered squarely since such action was a road block for peaceful solution. NSCN (R) has asked AR to reveal as to what objectionable things/materials were found in Kitovi’s house. It reminded the AR that their leader, N. Kitovi was a peace loving citizen and not a terrorist. NSCN (R) further sought explanation to the people as to who had authorized AR to humiliate the Naga leader. NSCN (R) cautioned that the AR “cannot justify their uncivilized action by explaining the draconian law (AFSPA) because our leader is well–protected under Ceasefire mechanism.” It said that when government of India (GoI) was trying its best to resolve long standing political issue with the Nagas, “its security forces continue to provoke the peaceful atmosphere in Naga country”. Such action was not only objectionable, but undesirable at this crucial juncture. Citing several instances of brutal action by AR/security forces, NSCN (R) said that on July 6 at Khonsa, Arunachal Pradesh, Indian security forces had brutally murdered four Naga Army in cold blood and even inflicted multiple bruises after they were murdered.
