Oxford COVID vaccine trial resumes LONDON, SEP 12 (PTI): Biopharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford on Saturday said that clinical trials for their coronavirus vaccine have resumed in the UK after the Medicines Health Regulatory Authority’s (MHRA) confirmed that the trials were safe. The human trials resumed days after a pause had been announced in the trials after an adverse reaction in one of the participants. AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford, as the trial sponsor, said that they cannot disclose further medical information but confirmed that independent investigations concluded that the trials were safe to restart. “Clinical trials for the AstraZeneca Oxford coronavirus vaccine, AZD1222, have resumed in the UK following confirmation by the MHRA that it was safe to do so,” AstraZeneca said in a statement. “AstraZeneca is committed to the safety of trial participants and the highest standards of conduct in clinical trials. “The company will continue to work with health authorities across the world
India’s COVID cases cross 46-lakh mark NEW DELHI, SEP 12 (PTI): India’s COVID-19 caseload raced past 46 lakh with a record 97,570 infections being reported in a day, while 36,24,196 people have recuperated so far taking the national recovery rate to 77.77 per cent on Saturday, according to Union health ministry data. The total number of coronavirus cases mounted to 46,59,984, while the death toll climbed to 77,472 with 1,201 people succumbing to the infection in a span of 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am showed. The COVID-19 case fatality rate due to the coronavirus infection has further dropped to 1.66 per cent. There are 9,58,316 active cases of COVID-19 in the country which comprises 20.56 per cent of the total caseload, the data stated. India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23 and it went past 40 lakh on September 5. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a cumulative total of 5,51,89,226 samples have been tested up to September 11 with 10,91,251 samples being tested on Friday.

and be guided as to when other clinical trials can resume to provide the vaccine broadly, equitably and at no profit during this pandemic,” the company said. On September 6, the standard review process triggered a voluntary pause to vaccination across all global trials to allow the review of safety data by independent committees, and international regulators. UK committee concluded its investigations and recommended to the MHRA that trials in the UK are safe to restart. All trial investigators and participants will be updated with the relevant information and this will be
disclosed on global clinical registries, according to the clinical trial and regulatory standards, AstraZeneca said. AZD1222 was co-invented by the University of Oxford and its spin-out company, Vaccitech. It uses a replication-deficient chimpanzee viral vector based on a weakened version of a common cold virus (adenovirus) that causes infections in chimpanzees and contains the genetic material of the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID19 virus spike protein). After vaccination, the surface spike protein is produced, priming the immune system to attack the SARSCoV-2 virus if it later infects
the body. AstraZeneca, the biopharmaceutical giant in tie-up with the university to produce the vaccine, had described the pause as a “routine” one following what was “an unexplained illness”. Oxford University’s Jenner Institute team started working to develop a vaccine against SARS-CoV-2, or the virus which causes COVID-19 in January this year and says it has been working with “unprecedented urgency” in a race against the coronavirus. Phase I and II results proved positive as they showed that the vaccine induced strong antibody and T-cell immune responses for up to 56 days after they were given. T-cells are crucial for maintaining protection against the virus for years. During the study, participants who received the vaccine had detectable neutralising antibodies, which have been suggested by researchers as important for protection, and these responses were strongest after a booster dose, with 100 per cent of participants’ blood having neutralising activity against the coronavirus.

AB-PMJAY not user-friendly: Pvt Hospitals Correspondent
KOHIMA, SEP 12 (NPN): Leading private hospitals in Kohima have revealed that the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY)— flagship health assurance scheme of the Government of India— was not userfriendly despite the state having 2.43 lakh AB-PMJAY e-card holders as of September 5, 2020. With all the district hospitals designated as COVID-19 hospitals, the state government empanelled private hospitals, which were earlier not empanelled, to provide an alternative for hospitalized care to PMJAY beneficiaries. The leading hospitals in Kohima have, however, expressed dismay over the delay and mode of payment by the insurance company and the rates being very poor. They said the system of payment by insurance company was very poor, adding that pending bills in one hospital alone was more than Rs.30 lakh. In an interview with Nagaland Post, Dr. Kezhalezo Angami of M/S Bethel Medical Centre informed that Ayushman Bharat

DIMAPUR, SEP 12 (NPN): Nagaland COVID-19 tally breached the 5000-mark on Saturday after 118 fresh cases were reported from across the state. On Saturday, 113 cases were detected in Dimapur, 2 each in Kohima and Peren and 1 in Mon district, taking the tally to 5064 cases. Out of 5064 positive cases, the distribution across
various categories of people include 2377 cases from the Armed Forces, 1399 returnees, 317 frontline workers and 971 traced contacts. According to Health department’s weekly bulletin, positivity rate had increased in the last two week after a small decline. It further said that a total of 69,050 samples had been tested till date.
DIMAPUR, SEP 12 (NPN): The newly formed Political Affairs Mission (PAM) of the NPF has called upon all Naga Political Groups (NPGs) to unite in order to facilitate in bringing about ‘one agreement, one solution’ to the protracted Naga political issue. PAM also appealed to both NSCN (I-M) and the Working Committee of the NNPGs to “welcome each other with open arms as brothers” and to “stick to what has been agreed upon in the Framework Agreement signed on August 3, 2015 and the Agreed Position signed on November 17, 2017.” This was conveyed by PAM after the consultative meeting with the 7 NNPGs at Father’s House Church, Chumukedima which was chaired by opposition leader and chairman of PAM, TR Zeliang. At the meeting, PAM members explained that the motive of withdrawing from
PAM members and others with WC delegation, Saturday.
the Joint Legislators Forum (JLF) on Naga political issue was not to walk away from the mission of being a facilitator but rather to allow both PDA legislature party and NPF legislature party to work independently. PAM reiterated that the NPF stood for an inclusive, honourable and acceptable solution and that it would continue to promote peace and unity within the various NPGs while facilitating in opening doors for peaceful conclusion of the Naga issue with the Centre in letter and spirit. Urging the NNPGs to revisit the ‘Covenant of Naga Reconciliation’ signed at Chiangmai, Thailand and
to unite with other NPGs, PAM opined that there should be only one accord between the NPGs and the Government of India since the mission of all concern was also one. Meanwhile, PAM said that NNPGs during the meeting conveyed that the group was open for reconciliation, at the same time affirmed that it had no objection to round table talks with any group. NNPGs said it had maintained openness in all its dealings before the Naga people and expressed optimism that final inking to the peace talks would take place very soon for permanent peace and progress.
scheme was good for the poor, but it was not a user-friendly. Dr. Kezhalezo Angami that Bethel medical centre has been taking e-card holders since the last two years. However, he said that since the payment was not made on time, it has stopped for some time. However, with the outbreak of COVID-19, the hospital resumed to treat PM-JAY e-card holders, he added. Dr. Kezha said that the insurance company, which was supposed to pay the bill within two weeks, normally pays after delaying for months and that too in lump sum without specifying for which the bill was paid. He said government insurance companies must be given preference. Further, he said that many e-card holders were not well informed about when to use the card. Dr.Kezha said the patients mostly submit the card during the time of discharge leaving the hospital in tight situation. Mentioning about the poor rates, Dr. Kezha said suggestions were put forth to the health department for revised rates as the present rate was too poor for the hospitals to continue. Raising similar issue, Dr. Vikethonyü Kesiezie,
managing director Oking hospital and research clinic Pvt. Ltd, said the rates were “ridiculous”. He reminded that hospitals were not getting any profit out of the PM-JAY. However, since the hospital cannot afford to deny health services to the poor people, they have resumed accepting PM-JAY e-card holders. According to Dr. Kesiezie, after a gap of two/ three months the hospital received some payment few days back of about Rs. 14-15 lakh and about Rs. 30 lakh balance was yet to be paid by the insurance company. He said it was discouraging that dues were not cleared on time while the hospital, considering the poor condition of the patients, cannot deny them healthcare. Dr. Kesiezie also raised the issue of patients submitting e-card while being discharged and said they must be well informed about the usage of card. To queries, he said Oking hospital remained committed to serve the people, but regular payment by the insurance company would help the hospital treat many more patients. (Cont’d on p-6)
BAN urges govt to ban collection at check gates DIMAPUR, SEP 12 (NPN): Business Association of Nagas (BAN) has appealed to the state government to do away with collection of money at all check gates and highways and ensure safe passage to transporters entering/ crossing the state. BAN through its media cell said it has taken note of the warning issued by Karbi Anglong truckers that they would be compelled to block the National Highways to Dimapur unless the DC Dimapur reviewed the order of taking punitive action against overloading of goods vehicles under relevant MV Act. In this regard, BAN said that not addressing the demand of transporters would “greatly affect most Naga business firms in Kohima and Dimapur” especially at a time when business crippled by
COVID-19 pandemic had just started and was limping back to normalcy with great difficulty. The association said that transport trucks not entering state’s two main commercial hubs would bring business into a stand still. Stating that transporters carry excess load to meet the multiple collection of money at various points, BAN said that complying with the order would adversely affect the business fraternity with high cost of transportation. BAN said that the brunt of price rise would ultimately be borne by the public/ consumers. Meanwhile, expressing resentment over nonimplementation of GST norm, BAN said that tax for both central and state were paid, but transporters were subjected to pay beyond GST.
H&FW department obsessed with COVID: AMK India, China troops within shooting range ‘Patient dies at PMTI for want of emergency services’ DIMAPUR, SEP 12 (NPN): Taking serious note of an incident at Para-Medical Training Institute (PMTI) Kohima, where a patient seeking health care had died in the OPD, the Angamimiapfü Mechü Krotho (AMK) has slammed the Health & Family Welfare department for being more obsessed with COVID-19 than other emergency cases. In a statement, AMK president Kevinourheno Seyie and general secretary Shürhivino Nakhro, while not denying that the new disease (COVID-19) had caused unprecedented challenges to the health care system around the
world, expressed concern that despite several months into the crisis, no decisive strategy had been made to provide general health care to the poor especially in Kohima, forcing the poor patients to seek health care services in private hospitals, which was beyond their means. It pointed out that the Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) authority had issued an order on September 3 informing the public about the rollback of NHAK into normal public healthcare delivery service and also shifting of all Covid-19 sample testing, triage OPD/Flu OPD to TT stadium with effect from September 4. However, AMK said except shifting of the sample testing centre from NHAK, there was no resumption of general public health care services at NHAK. It said
that only OPD services, without emergency services, was operational at the Para-Medical Training Institute (PMTI). Reminding that it had also raised several issues regarding lack of emergency and in-patient care services in government establishments for poor patients including cancer care and dialysis for renal failure patient, AMK pointed out that it was incumbent upon the government to ensure that no lives were lost for want of services in the district hospitals. AMK said that after the death of a patient in the OPD of PMTI, it was learnt that PMTI was not equipped to deal with such emergencies. This incident has exposed a very tragic inadequacy and unpreparedness of the government healthcare facility, AMK
stated. To this, the Krotho wo n d e r e d h ow m a n y loss of lives would it take for the Health & Family Welfare department and the NHAK to resume the public healthcare delivery service? The Krotho further demanded to know as to why services were not resumed despite repeated declaration that were made including the principal director of Health department? While stating that it was not vilifying any individual in position of authority, AMK however asserted that accountability should be fixed and the concerned authority and the government must ensure that no further lives were lost for want of health care facility or lack of decisive planning to provide appropriate health care facility. The Chinese People’s Liberation Army made provocative military deployments at Spanggur Gap, which is between Gurung Hill and Magar Hill, from August 30 after Indian soldiers seized tactical heights on the ridge line on the southern bank of Pangong Tso near Chushul at the Line of Actual Control (LAC). “Seeing the Chinese PLA troop and guns mobilisation, the Indian Army too made mirror deployments at Spanggur Gap. They have been tasked to try and dislodge the Indian Army soldiers from the tactical heights. Indian Army has clearly reiterated that the forces will retaliate if Chinese troops make provocative
military moves. At the northern bank of Pangong Lake, sources said that even as PLA troops continue to occupy positions on Finger 4 mountain spur jutting into the lake, Indian soldiers have occupied some heights overlooking their positions. “Our troops have occupied some heights overlooking the positions occupied by PLA,” said a source. 3 new containment zones in Shillong
SHILLONG, SEP 12 (PTI/ Correspondent): The district administration has declared three areas here as containment zones to allow health officials to detect COVID-19 cases and map all influenza like infection (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) to arrest the surge of coronavirus death cases, officials said on Saturday. The East Khasi Hills district administration has declared Madan Laban, Riat Laban and Keating Road of the state capital as containment zones, they said. At least three deaths have taken place in Madan Laban area and in Riat Laban area in the past one week while over 35 COVID19 cases were detected from Keatinge Road area, they said. “Such deaths could have been prevented through early detection, therefore, in order to prevent further transmission among the susceptible population, early detection through active house to house search of cases, detection of persons with co-morbidities and detection of all ILI and SARI cases in the area is urgently required to prevent further transmission and deaths,” district deputy commissioner Isawanda Laloo said in an order. She said for effective house to house surveillance, complete containment of the area is required to ensure people stay indoors during
the active search of cases. “The survey to identify patients with comorbidities is on,” Director of Health Services Aman War said. The state witnessed a sudden surge in the number of deaths due to COVID-19 during the past one week. The death toll has risen to 24 as five more patients have died since Thursday. War said the spike in the number of deaths was mainly due to the delay by patients with co-morbidities in reporting to the hospital for medical treatment. “COVID-19 infection causes principal diseases to become severe. Therefore, we urge such patients to consider taking medical help even if they are having mild fever and cough,” he said. He said the statistics of patients with comorbidities will also be collected from all government and private hospitals including PHCs and CHCs across the state. Meghalaya had reported 3,447 COVID-19 cases till Friday.
15-year-old boy dies
A 15 year-old boy succumbed to COVID-19 infection in Meghalaya, taking the death toll to 25, even as 168 new positive cases were reporting taking the active cases to 1570 in the state on Saturday. Director of Health Services (MI), Dr. Aman War informed that Welldoneboy Marbaniang, who was brought from Mawpat
area to Dr. H. Post-mortem
Vol. XXx NO. 279 Dimapur, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2020
Internet superpowers
P
olitical parties in India have taken serious note of posts in Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc over abusive contents which were hurtful or defamatory on them. The political parties may not necessarily apply the same yardstick over fair observation of abusive contents in social media. The fact is ruling and opposition political parties are the ones who throw stones at others while living inside glass houses. Their subjective complaints have no relation with being fair on all. In India, political parties function the same way when in opposition as well as in power. However, in principle, the ruling government at the Centre appears to have made up its mind about the need to regulate content on social media. The government argues that unregulated social media promotes misinformation, hate speech, defamation, threats to public order, terrorist incitement, bullying, and antinational activities. All these appear to be reasonable policy in holding the unregulated and absolutely free social media forum accountable for offences under the law of the land. Recently, Facebook came into media focus for the contents and also for itself playing an interventionist role to favour the ruling party at the Centre. This had led the parliamentary panel on IT headed by Congress leader Sashi Tharoor to question Facebook’s India boss Ajit Mohan for more than two hours. The panel had summoned Facebook after The Wall Street Journal published a story last month saying Ankhi Das, the U.S. tech giant’s Public Policy Director for South and Central Asia, had opposed the taking down of posts by a BJP politician who labelled Indian Muslims traitors. At the hearing lawmakers from opposition parties, including the Congress, slammed Facebook for not taking down hate or inflammatory content posted by users with rightwing ideology or by accounts related to the BJP. Two expert witnesses invited by the committee said Facebook was not as content-neutral as it claimed to be, with “circumstantial evidence” pointing to “collusion” between the social media giant and the BJP government. Facebook’s policy director for India and South and Central Asia, Ankhi Das, posted messages of her support for BJP for several years on an internal group of the company’s employees, detailing efforts to help the party win the 2014 national election, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. In February 2018 India’s antitrust regulator- Competition Commission of India (CCI)-imposed a fine of Rs136 crore on Google Inc. for unfair business practices in the local market for online search. What has been exposed during the past few years merits serious study on how social media giants, who have exploited the unlimited reach of these platforms, bent the rule of every book for profit yet not paying taxes. In July 2020, top CEOs of well known social media giants- Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos; Apple CEO Tim Cook, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google parent Alphabet, were summoned to testify before the US House Antitrust Subcommittee. Governments across the world need to have a closer scrutiny at the social media giants whose invasive and unethical practises have the potential of turning them into super powers of the internet in the next few decades.
DailyDevotion Going Through Spiritual Confusion
Jesus answered and said, “You do not know what you ask.” —Matthew 20:22 There are times in your spiritual life when there is confusion, and the way out of it is not simply to say that you should not be confused. It is not a matter of right and wrong, but a matter of God taking you through a way that you temporarily do not understand. And it is only by going through the spiritual confusion that you will come to the understanding of what God wants for you. The Shrouding of His Friendship(see Luke 11:5-8). Jesus gave the illustration here of a man who appears not to care for his friend. He was saying, in effect, that is how the heavenly Father will appear to you at times. You will think that He is an unkind friend, but remember— He is not. The time will come when everything will be explained. There seems to be a cloud on the friendship of the heart, and often even love itself has to wait in pain and tears for the blessing of fuller fellowship and oneness. When God appears to be completely shrouded, will you hang on with confidence in Him? The Shadow on His Fatherhood(see Luke 11:1113). Jesus said that there are times when your Father will appear as if He were an unnatural father— as if He were callous and indifferent— but remember, He is not. “Everyone who asks receives…” (Luke 11:10). If all you see is a shadow on the face of the Father right now, hang on to the fact that He will ultimately give you clear understanding and will fully justify Himself in everything that He has allowed into your life. The Strangeness of His Faithfulness(see Luke 18:1-8). “When the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:8). Will He find the kind of faith that counts on Him in spite of the confusion? Stand firm in faith, believing that what Jesus said is true, although in the meantime you do not understand what God is doing. He has bigger issues at stake than the particular things you are asking of Him right now.

India and China might not want war
ndia and China continue to be locked in a tense stand-off, despite the meeting between Minister S Jaishankar, and Minister Wang Yi. India is right to stand its ground that the Chinese have violated existing protocols on the border. It is right to send a signal that it will not embolden China by ceding territory. But it is worth looking beyond the morality of the claims and counter claims, at the structural logic of the situation to see why India and China are now locked in this precarious embrace, where they might not want war, but will not be able to will peace either. The first is an issue of trust. Clearly, the Chinese actions have set back trust between the two countries by decades. But rather than think of trust as an attribute of character, think of the tactical logic of trust. Was the “trust” that kept tranquillity at the border largely a product of a perceived asymmetric relationship? Keeping a measured distance and disengagement made sense when both sides could assume that the other side either did not have the capacity or would not rapidly deploy troops in strategic
D
positions at the border. With the building of infrastructure on both sides, this trust was bound to break. The ground realities were shifting. So even if there is some temporary disengagement, both sides will now assume that the slightest diminution in military deployments could give the other side an opportunity to advance in a matter of hours. An infrastructurethick environment will require permanent presence and closer deployments. Chinese capabilities are probably greater than India’s in this respect. But with India ramping up infrastructure and capabilities, this fear will be tangible on both sides. The fact that at the level of the army, we seem to have consistently misread the PLA’s intentions, both in April and May when the first deployments happened, but also in June and July when disengagement was supposed to have taken place, will make trust nearly impossible. So, heavier deployment of assets is now a fait accompli. The closer the armies get, the greater the risks. But beyond the tactical logic, there is a political logic that does not bode well. Let us, for a moment, put aside
the moral claims and look at the self-reinforcing logic of perception. There is still speculation on why the Chinese are taking an aggressive posture. A distracted US gives an opportunity for Chinese assertion. But the very fact that we are not sure of Chinese motives means it is hard to know their endgame. We may not know their motives, but we can think about their fears. These fears make the situation precarious. At a basic level, they will want to secure their interests in CPEC. But on the most important matter, Tibet, the situation may be as bad as the 1950s. China has always wanted an aggressive territorial and cultural consolidation on Tibet. In the Fifties, it felt vulnerable on account of fears that India and Nepal could be a staging ground of resistance in Tibet, aided by the Americans. The importance of this structural issue has not diminished. Chinese interest in Nepal is less to encircle India. It is to ensure Nepal is not used in any way. With China intensifying its cultural consolidation in Tibet, Sino-US tensions rising, the fear of India being ground zero for
any resistance is high. On Tibet, India is in an awkward situation. At one level, India does not have to do anything and China will still see it as a potential threat to its cultural hegemony in Tibet, because of the presence of the Dalai Lama. Ladakh and Tawang are also important pieces in that cultural consolidation. The Sino-India modus vivendi was premised on keeping the Tibet issue in check, and India, in recent years, often against its own democratic instinct, clamped down on Tibetan protest. But just as we are not sure of Chinese motives, they may not be sure of our motives either. There is an ideological shift to a deeper authoritarianism in China; and authoritarianism by its very nature will require an aggressive nationalism to shore up its power. Chinese aggression is a problem for the world. But India has also announced that it intends to break the shackles of the past; its growing power means it needs a new paradigm of foreign policy. This policy will supposedly safeguard India’s interests more assertively. It wants to exchange the allegedly placid submission
of the past with a more sophisticated policy, where all options can be exercised. India may be right about its claims. But it does not take a genius to figure out that, if diplomatically not well managed, this posture also causes great uncertainty in the international system and makes it harder to assess motives. Our Pakistan policy is premised entirely on keeping them guessing on what we might do, including possible military options and altering the territorial status quo. We may think we were within our formal international rights to alter administrative status quo in Kashmir. But like China we are also signalling that we are not content with the status quo and would like infrastructural, territorial and cultural consolidation on our periphery. The government of India may paint a picture of diplomatic maturity. But the domestic ideological articulation of India’s position ranges from reclaiming PoK to Aksai Chin. We never weigh our own words carefully. We cannot abandon Tibetans. But it is not difficult to see that Ram Madhav attending a Tibetan
commando’s funeral fits into a narrative of uncertainty over our intentions. The point is not to impugn India’s claims. Between India and China there is no comparison on who is the more responsible power. The point is a simple analytical one that our own trumpeted departure from the past, without either the diplomatic preparation, domestic political discipline, and full anticipation of military eventualities, does not make it easy for others to understand our endgame. So there is a mutually reinforcing cycle of mutual antagonism. More than a tactical deadlock, there is now also a deeper psychological and political deadlock. Faced with a palpable threat, India cannot back down. But we are in uncertain territory in terms of the logic of escalation. Resolving this conundrum will require not routine political guidance but great statesmanship on both sides. Otherwise we are in a state of nature, where neither side can anticipate the other’s intent, and will take preemptive measures, heightening the risk of conflict. Pratap Bhanu Mehta
A brief sketch on the life of Rev. Dr. K. Imotemjen Aier
uring one of my many meetings and conversations with Shri Chubatemjen, former Minister Nagaland, I expressed my desire and eagerness to meet Rev. Dr K. Imotemjen Aier one day if God willing. Shri Chubatemjen is the co- brother in law of Rev. Dr K. Imotemjen Aier and he willingly made arrangements for our meeting. As planned, one day I went along with my son to visit the wonderful family of Rev.Dr Aier and were warmly welcomed by his wife Mrs Arenmongla Jamitsur of Ungma village. As we were pleasantly led inside the comfortable sitting room, Dr Aier also joined us from the adjoining room and we warmly shook hands for the first time. After exchanging some pleasantries, he started narrating about many things that I had never heard of earlier or learnt about and was surprised at his vast knowledge and experience. We continued our discussion over tea & snacks, then after praying together, decided to meet again. On my second visit, he gave me many invaluable documents and manuscripts collected from different sources. While reading through these, I found him to be a very sincere, sharp and hard-working gentleman. As I learnt more about him, I found him to be an extremely meticulous person, who bestowed everything upon God, and this led me to be even more interested to know further about this man of God. He is truly a God chosen leader for the Nagas and a great man who is immensely blessed by God. Therefore, I decided that I should write an article on him so that others may also be blessed. Rev. Dr K. Imotemjen Aier, son of Kariyongdang Aier and Tsuknungchila was born on 5th May, 1931 at Longjang village. After doing his early schooling in his village, he completed his Matriculation from Mokokchung in 1952. He then went on to study B.Th at the then Jorhat Bible College, presently the Eastern Theological College and later completed B.D at Serampore, Kolkata in 1961. The same year, he began teaching at the Bible School and High School, Impur. From 1963 January, he served as the Field Evangelist and also Chairman of the ABAM Executive Committee. During January and June
1963, he also served as the Acting Executive Secretary ABAM during the absence of Rev. Kijung. The same year in the month of December, he married Miss. Arenmongla Jamitsur at the Ungma Baptist Church. After obtaining World Council of Churches Scholarship, he went for further studies at the Colgate Rochester Divinity School, New York (USA) in 1964, and returned to India in 1965 after completion. While serving in Impur thereafter, upon the request of CBCNEI to ABAM for his services, he began serving as the Associate Executive Secretary, CBCNEI Guwahati. Later on, he continued serving in the CBCNEI as the General Secretary from 1968 to 1988. During these years, there happened a great transformation and revival in NorthEast India and thus resulted in many new Churches being established under the banner of CBCNEI. One of the most significant records during his 21 years of service at the CBCNEI was his appointment as the Vice President from India at the Baptist World Alliance. His leadership at the highest pedestal in the white men’s world was an achievement not only for the Nagas but Indians as well because Western world began to recognize the importance of CBCNEI at the Baptist International Ministry (BIM). Two major international events were celebrated during his tenure at the CBCNEI – the Centennial celebration of ABAM, Impur in 1972 where more than 40,000 delegates converged together to celebrate the 100 years of Christianity for the Ao-Nagas and Nagaland during which he was also the President of the Centennial Celebration. The second big event was the successful celebration of CBCNEI Sesquicentennial in Dimapur where more than 50,000 gathered to glorify His name. During his services with the CBCNEI, he also represented and served in the following organizations: 1. North East India Christian Council 2. Baptist Union of India 3. National Christian Council of India 4. Asian Baptist Federation 5. American Baptist Foreign Mission society (the present Baptist International Ministry)
6. Baptist World Alliance 7. Baptist Council of World Nation. After retirement from CBCNEI, his family was again invited by the Board of International Ministry (BIM) to serve as Missionary to the United States of America. As a Missionary for a couple of years in USA, he preached and travelled all across, reviving the people to Christ where the Churches were decaying. Thereafter, the BIM again commissioned him as India’s Residential Cross Cultural Missionary. His family was then based at Balasore Town, Orissa and administered in the BIM Mission fields of Bengal, Orissa, Bihar Baptist Church Association (BOBBCA). The American Baptist Foreign Mission Society which had established these mission fields hundreds of years ago, were unfortunately declining but he successfully introduced great revival to these areas and strengthened the Churches. After his services in these 3 Indian states, and as he was about to go for retirement, the erstwhile Baptist World Alliance, the present BIM, appreciating his sincerity, honesty and hard-work requested him to be the Power of Attorney to BIM properties in India. He said that this assignment was the biggest challenge in his life because he had to protect and preserve all movable and immovable assets of the BIM against all odds, including intimidation, wrong and willful accusations, insults and even court litigations. But with his prayers and strong faith in God, he was successful in the protection of properties worth crores of Rupees for the BIM and for which he was again highly appreciated and respected worldwide. And after serving God for all his life, he retired from the BIM Power of Attorney in 2018. And at his ripe age of 90 years, he is still physically strong without any major health issues, nor is his clear eye sight, ears, teeth and his mind affected and he is as young and healthy as any able-bodied person. It should be our prayer that our Almighty grants him a long life for the glory of His name and as a blessing to our people. He is not only a living legend and a very important personality for the Nagas or Indians but a very indispensable figure at the international level of BIM. He is the first person from
NEI to reach such a level of recognition, respect and honor, and I would like to request and advice younger generation to emulate and follow his footsteps. I am sharing this brief account of his life because I believe that we have much to learn from this great leader, and it is high time that we should make efforts to take
T
advice and blessings from him and also acknowledge his selfless contributions. He and his wife have been blessed with 3 very successful children. Their daughter Dr Limatula is the District Immunization Officer at Mokokchung, son Er Lanusungkum is the Principal System Analyst at the NIC Kohima and youngest
son Bendangyanger is a successful businessman at BBA CISCPO, California, USA. An autobiography of Gods’ warrior Rev. Dr K. Imotemjen. Aier is being written by renowned author Tiala Imchen, and we hope to learn and benefit much more after the book is released. May God bless you all. I Anungla Sanglir
Try to copy their insides
oday, because of the lockdown, a small group of our Ao community in our colony often conduct fellowships and services in Whatsapp. A few days back I was asked to talk on a particular topic for 3 minutes and send it to our Whatsapp admin. I am a graduate from Kohima Science College so I thought I’d better speak in English so that the message could reach more people. The next day my daughter came rather upset and said that my audio message was in some facebook and whatsapp group but for the wrong reason, that is because of my poor English accent or rather pronunciation, it seemed like some young people were making fun of it in the social media. My daughter asked me why I had to speak in English when the service was conducted only among our community and that now she was hesitant even to log in into her facebook. Well what can I say, I was born and brought up in Mokokchung in the 70’s, later married to an Angami lady and settled in Kohima. I just want to say something to those foreigners- type people having fun at my expense in particular and to the Young Naga people in general that I appreciate how fine you can talk English, it’s because you have been taught that way, I am also speaking the way I was taught. Now coming to my main point. Today many of you try
to speak like the British people, dress like the Americans and give extra efforts and try so hard to look cute like the Koreans especially while taking photographs. So apart from these, what else do you copy? 1. Their hard working nature? 2. Their cleanliness? 3. Their achievements in the field of sports, science, technology?. Today almost all the states in NE have players in the ISL (Indian Super League) earning them lakhs in just one season, why is it that we don’t have one player even after all these years. How many Nagas have ever qualified for the Common Wealth Games, Asian Games, Olympics etc. Has any Naga ever gone to the moon? Right from our kitchen to our toilets and to the street, we use things invented and discovered by others. The Koreans, Japanese, French, Russians, Germans etc all speak English but in their own accent and nobody mocks at them because they are achievers in themselves. So dear young friends, if you really want to imitate others, try to copy not only their outer appearances but try to copy their insides as well. I’ll be happy if Someday the world come to know about the Nagas through our successes and achievements in various fields, if it happens, I won’t be surprise if one fine day an American come to Nagaland and asks my Angami wife – “halo- Aanti…. wher…. are… yo.. koin ho..””? Oblivious during the Covid times Sir,
The recent news of lockdown being relaxed has calmed the minds of workers and daily bread earners as they are able to continue their work. However, it has come to the attention that most of the people going about their day to day activities have become less cautious about the seriousness of this pandemic and Covid 19 . People should be reminded that no vaccine has yet been developed, the process of which is on. Covid 19 is still a threat to the lives of people. People are randomly hanging about with no proper social distancing, no mask and no self awareness. A while back as I was travelling I saw children playing about in the open. As adults, parents should be aware of where the child is going and as to where he is. It’s not a time to be negligent. No virus would give a warning sign before it presents itself. A very saddening fact transpired that the society as a whole were being incautious. There are people in the front lines (Last Name) protecting and risking their lives for the society. Their family, their children are all living at the edge of tomorrow waiting for the day as to when their loved once would return home safe and sound. But here we as the citizens going on about as we like. With each passing days people have neglected and have given no particular importance to the growth of the pandemic which if not taken care of can be a threat to the whole human population. It is high time to straighten ourselves and be of service to the society and stand up for the betterment of the people by being a citizen who thinks and not by being a person who functions with no responsibility. Ranchi, Sep 12 (IANS): Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren met jailed Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad on Saturday to discuss the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. Soren met Lalu at the official residence of the Director of Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) here. Lalu Prasad who was staying at paying ward of RIMS has been shifted to Director’s residence due to Covid-19. “Met Lalu after a long time. Our party wants to fight the Bihar elections in alliance with Rashtriya Janata Dal. Who will play what role will be decided later,” said Soren, while addressing reporters after meeting the former Bihar CM. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) wants to fight for 12 Assembly seats, but the party has no legislator in Bihar at present. Soren is an executive president of JMM. He added that the party had one seat in 2005 Assembly polls.
NEW DELHI, SEP 12 (IANS): Advocate Prashant Bhushan on Saturday moved a plea filed in the Supreme Court seeking a right of appeal against conviction his in the criminal contempt case, to be heard by a larger and a different bench. The plea has been filed through his counsel Kamini Jaiswal. Bhushan has urged the apex court to issue directions declaring that a person convicted for criminal contempt by it, including the petitoner, would have a right to an intra-court appeal to be heard by a larger and different bench. The plea contended that the apex court should also issue directions to frame rules and guidelines providing for intra-court appeal against conviction in original criminal contempt cases, and the review petitions filed against orders of conviction by Supreme Court in original criminal contempt cases would be heard in open court by a different bench. On August 31, the apex court had convicted Bhushan for two tweets against the judiciary and imposed a token of Rs 1 on him. Citing inherent bias, the plea said contempt proceedings are one in which the injured party (Supreme Court) acts as the prosecutor, the witness and the
judge, thereby raising fear of inherent bias. “As a judge the power of the Supreme Court to convict and sentence the accused is unlimited and arbitrary...No one can be at once a suitor and a judge. Thus, there is a need for an intra-court appeal,” said the plea. The plea contended that in such cases, considering the fact that there is inherent unavoidable conflict of interest involved, and the fact that liberty of the alleged contemnor is at stake, it is of utmost importance that certain basic safeguards are designed which would reduce (though not obviate) chances of arbitrary, vengeful and high-handed decisions. The plea also argued that it is extremely important to minimise such decisions since they not only cause great injustice to the alleged contemnor, but also bring disrepute to the court itself and are likely to be harshly judged by legal historians. “That the right to appeal against conviction in original criminal cases is a substantive right under Article 21 and flows from principles of natural justice. The absence of such a right thus violates Article 21. This has been affirmed in judgements of this Court,” said the plea.
Bengaluru, Sep 12 (IANS): Realtor turned social activist Prashant Sambargi appeared before Bengaluru’s City Crime Branch (CCB) to provide alleged information and evidence he has on the drugs mafia links with Sandalwood actors. The CCB has so far arrested more than a dozen persons, including Kannada film industry’s stars Ragini Dwivedi and Sanjjanaa Galrani. Prashant has been in the forefront in the fight against drug mafia taking its roots in the Kannada film industry. After noted film director Indrajit Lankesh first raked up the drugs issue, Prashant started visiting several TV studios, claiming that he was an activist and knew more about drug addiction cases in Sandalwood. He named Galrani in this connection on TV

shows. He also alleged that former Minister and Congress leader BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan had gone to Sri Lanka to take part in a party to which Galrani was also invited. This had created a lot of buzz in media circles and resulted in Khan filing a police complaint against Prashant on Friday. Hearing his views aired on the TV, the CCB issued him a notice on Friday to appear before them to “disclose all information
and place every piece of evidence” before the authorities to help probe the matter in detail. Prior to appearing before the CCB, Prashant Sambargi dared Khan to disclose his travel details of June 8, 9 and 10 last year. “My only question to Khan is -- where was he on June 8, 9 and 10, 2019? Let him answer this question publicaly or else I will disclose in the days to come,” he said. Khan had gone to Colombo on these days, he claimed. “He was a Minister at that time. Why did he go there? What was the purpose of his visit? He must come out clean on this,” he asserted. It may be recalled that Prashant Sambargi came into public limelight when Kannada actress Shruti Hariharan launched a #Metoo campaign in 2018 against noted multi-lingual star Arjun Sarja.
Over 300 party activists marched from PCC headquarters to Wellington crossing here, shouting slogans opposing the ‘vilification campaign’ against Rhea.
KOLKATA, SEP 12 (PTI): Congress activists took out rallies in the metropolis on Saturday in protest against the alleged victimisation of actor Rhea Chakraborty, days after its Bengal unit chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury decribed her arrest in a drugs case as “ludicrous”. Over 300 party activists marched from PCC headquarters to Wellington crossing here, shouting slogans opposing the “vilification campaign” against Rhea in the name of investigation, and held placards that read “we will not stop till she gets justice”. Congress MLA Manoj Chakraborty wondered why she was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), months after boyfriend Sushant Singh Ra-
jput’s death. “Was it orchestrated by the Centre with an eye on the Bihar polls,” he said. He claimed that Rhea was being harassed and framed, which was a part of vendetta politics. “Pradesh Congress Committee will not accept such a revengeful act against a woman from Bengal, or against any woman in the country,” the MLA told PTI. On Wednesday, Leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had said Rajput was an Indian actor, but the “BJP turned him into a Bihari actor” only to score electoral brownie points. “Rhea Chakroborty has been indicted not for abetment of suicide or murder or any economic of-
fences; she has been arrested under NDPS, ludicrous,” he said. Similar rallies were taken out by the party in West Midnapore and West Burdwan districts. Parties cutting across the political divide in West Bengal on Thursday evoked Bengali sub-nationalism, asserting that the “vilification campaign” against Rhea “proved” Bengalis are a soft target of the BJP, which is looking to cash in on this narrative ahead of the Bihar Assembly polls. After three days of interrogation, the NCB on Tuesday arrested Rhea, 28, in a drugs case linked to Rajput’s death, following which she was sent to judicial custody till September 22 by a local court.

They are talking about a Delhi model. But they should understand that it was in fact the Union government that provided the facilities in Delhi to manage the outbreak,” Sawant had said without naming AAP. Days after AAP started an oxymitra campaign, which involved making oxymeters available to asymptomatic Covid-19 patients to take oxygen saturation level readings when in home isolation, the Goa government on Friday had launched a fresh initiative to provide Covid-19 essential kits (which include an oxymeter) to all patients who are in home isolation.

This is objectionable,” Goa Aam Aadmi Party spokesperson Suren Tilve said. “If that was the case, why haven’t Amit Shah and the Health Minister made any efforts to rein in the pandemic in Goa, which has assumed severe proportions,” Tilve said. New Delhi, Sep 12 (IANS): The Delhi Legislative Assembly’s Peace and Harmony Committee has summoned Facebook India Deputy Chairman and Managing Director Ajit Mohan over complaints alleging willful inaction in enforcing rules to curb hate speech. According to the committee, this allegedly disturbed the peace in Delhi. The committee headed by AAP MLA Raghav Chadha has served notice to Mohan to appear before the committee on September 15. Chadha said, “Facebook India has been issued summons on the basis of sharp statements made by key witnesses as well as material presented on their behalf.” Chadha said, “With regard to the strong evidence presented on behalf of the witnesses, the committee believes that Facebook should be charged as a co-accused in the Delhi riots investigation.” The committee, with

He said that this happened due to the migrant workers who returned from the cities to their native places and joined the workforce. “I am satisfied that under the PM Garib Kalyan Yojana, works worth about Rs 23,000 crore have been completed in many states, including Madhya Pradesh,” the Prime Minister said. Emphasising the functioning style of his government, he said that in 2014, after studying earlier experiences, the old scheme was first tweaked and then implemented with a whole new perspective in the form of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. “In this, transparency was given a priority -- from beneficiary selection to house allotment,” Modi said, adding that earlier people had to run behind officials and others, but now the schemes automatically detect intended beneficiaries.

There are about 4,500 to 5,000 dabbawalas who deliver two lakh tiffins every day from suburban areas to the heart of the city. “Never before in the 130-year-old history of the tiffin services, has there been a six-month break. Mumbai, Sep 12 (PTI): Mumbai’s dabbawalas or lunch-box carriers have urged the Maharashtra government to permit them to travel in local trains, which are currently running in a restricted manner in light of the COVID-19 outbreak, an official said on Saturday. Access to local trains will enable dabbawalas to resume their business with full capacity, said Subhash Talekar, president of Mumbai Dabbawala Association. At present, only people employed in essential services are allowed to travel in suburban trains. “Dabbawalas are also part of essential services are they deliver food to Mumbaikars. And since most officers are now functioning with reduced capacity, people have been asking us to deliver their meals,” Talekar said. Take your threats off the table: UK PM to EU
Boris Johnson
The government says it is needed to clarify the Northern Ireland protocol element of the Brexit deal it signed in January to protect free trade between the four constituent nations of the United Kingdom But European lawmakers said on Friday they would not approve any new trade deal unless the withdrawal agreement was fully implemented, while there is also talk of possible legal action. Both sides have set a deadline of the end of October for a deal, raising the prospect that nearly $1 trillion in trade between the EU and Britain could be thrown into confusion at the start of 2021 when a transition period ends. Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Johnson said a “great deal” could still be done but it appeared the EU were now taking an “extreme interpretation” of the Northern Irish protocol.
‘Saudi royals must answer questions in 9/11 lawsuit’
New York, Sep 12 (AP): Two members of Saudi Arabia’s royal family will have to answer questions about the September 11 attacks in what lawyers for victims call a turning point in a longrunning lawsuit, a federal judge ruled. US Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn in a written ruling unsealed late Thursday ordered Saudi Arabia to make the royals — and other Saudi witnesses, including current and former government official — available for depositions. It was unclear how and when the witnesses will be deposed, but the decision means “we can start uncovering what they know,” plaintiff ’s attorney Jim Kreindler said Friday.
4 dead in Karachi building fire
Karachi, Sep 12 (IANS): Four people were killed and seven others injured when a three-storey residential building caught fire in Pakistan’s Karachi city on Saturday, rescue teams said. The fire broke out in the first floor of the building in a densely populated area of the city due to a short circuit, Salman Qureshi, a rescue worker with the Karachi-based NGO Saylani Welfare Trust, told Xinhua news agency. He said that the fire erupted in the early hours of Saturday morning, but rescue work got a bit delayed because of congested roads. Four families were residing in the building. The victims were members of the family who lived on the first floor which was the worst-hit, Qureshi said, adding that residents of the other floors were safely evacuated by the rescue workers. The injured people were shifted to a nearby hospital where one of them who jumped from the third floor in panic, is in critical condition, the rescue worker said.

Washington has also complained about a lack of reciprocity in access to media, saying Chinese diplomats are able to put their views across US outlets while America’s representatives are shunned by Chinese state media. Most recently, the State Department protested over the refusal by the Communist Party’s flagship newspaper People’s Daily to publish an op-ed by Ambassador Terry Branstad. The paper responded that the piece did not meet its editorial standards. China responded by ordering the closure of the US Consulate in the southwestern city of Chengdu, a double blow because of the mission’s key role in monitoring activities in the restive Himalayan region of Tibet. The US also capped the number of Chinese citizens working for state media outlets in the US, leading to the effective expulsion of 60 reporters, and has reduced the length of visas for others from one year to three months. That has brought renewed pressure on US outlets in China, and Beijing has delayed renewing credentials for several of their journalists pending a positive response from Washington.

Beijing, Sep 12 (AP): China has announced new restrictions on the activities of US diplomats working in mainland China and Hong Kong, in what it called a justified response to similar measures imposed on Chinese diplomats in the US last year. In a statement posted online late Friday, a foreign ministry spokesperson said the rules would apply to senior diplomats and all other personnel at the American Embassy in Beijing and consulates throughout China. However, the spokesperson said China supported “normal exchanges and cooperation between all sectors of the two countries” and said the restrictions could be lifted if the US were to revoke the measures it imposed last October. “Once again we urge the US side to immediately correct its mistakes and lift the unreasonable restrictions imposed on the Chinese Embassy and consulates and their staff. China will make reciprocal responses to US actions,” the spokesperson, who wasn’t identified, said. No details were given about the new restrictions. US diplomats already face limits on what parts of the country they can visit and even access to college campuses. The US rules require Chinese diplomats to report

LO N D O N, S e p 1 2 (Agencies): Prime Minister Boris Johnson told the European Union not to threaten Britain on Saturday, saying a bill which would breach a divorce treaty with the bloc was needed to protect the country’s integrity. With the EU stepping up planning for talks on trade to end without a deal, Johnson has accused its negotiators of threatening to impose a food blockade between mainland Britain and Northern Ireland. “Let’s make the EU take their threats off the table”, Johnson said on Twitter. “And let’s get this Bill through, back up our negotiators, and protect our country.” British lawmakers will on Monday begin debating the Internal Markets Bill, which one minister has said would breach international law “in a very specific and limited way”.
“We never seriously believed that the EU would be willing to use a treaty, negotiated in good faith, to blockade one part of the UK, to cut it off, or that they would actually threaten to destroy the economic and territorial integrity of the UK.” Johnson’s bill also faces opposition from senior figures in his Conservative Party and some of his own lawmakers who are unhappy at the prospect of infringing international law. In a video conference call with his lawmakers on Friday he appealed for support for his bill and for them to avoid repeating the “squabbling” over the Brexit divorce deal which saw some quit the party and others thrown out. Michael Gove, one of Johnson’s most senior ministers, said the government had the support of its own lawmakers and those in other parties. But some were clearly unconvinced. “Unamended I cannot support this Bill ... (it) is damaging brand UK, diminishing our role-model status as defender of global standards,” Conservative lawmaker Tobias Ellwood wrote on Twitter. Pushed on whether Britain would be breaking international law, Gove said the bill was consistent with “the rule of law” and denied it was a negotiating tactic to put pressure on the EU to make concessions for a trade deal.

Arsenal beat Fulham 3-0 in EPL opener Thiem, Zverev in US Open final
Arsenal players celebrate after scoring a goal during their English Premier League opening match against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
Lo n d o n, S e p 1 2 (Agencies): Arsenal’s old and new faces starred as they beat newly-promoted Fulham 3-0 at Craven Cottage in the Premier League season opener. Arsenal got Mikel Arteta’s first full campaign up and running through Alexandre Lacazette’s tapin (9) as debutant Willian’s shot was parried by Marek Rodak, before Willian hit the post with a free-kick. Willian’s corner was then nodded home by fellow debutant and man-of-
the-match Gabriel Magalhaes after the break (49) before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang curled home a beauty from just inside the box from another Willian assist (57) to hand Arsenal a dominant opening-day win. Arsenal’s momentum and belief was clear to see, with Arteta claiming his 18th win in the last 30 games. The Premier League kicked off again just 48 days after the end of the 2019/20 season, but for Fulham it

was a 489-day wait to put things right following their relegation in 2019. Bernd Leno had to deny Aboubakar Kamar at his feet after a mix-up between himself and Gabriel early on, but Arsenal soon found their rhythm and were ahead with a soft opener from Fulham’s point of view. Granit Xhaka’s miscued attempt from the edge of the box fell fortuitously to Willian at close range after Tim Ream failed to clear, and after the Brazilian’s close-range shot on the stretch was parried
PSG’s Neymar cleared of Covid Paris, Sep 12 (IANS): Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) forward Neymar has declared that he is “super happy” to return to training which implied that he has recovered from coronavirus and moved out of isolation. The 28-year-old striker was one of seven players in the PSG squad who had tested positive recently. The other infected players include Kylian Mbappe, Mauro Icardi, Angel Di Maria, Leandro Paredes, Keylor Navas and Marquinhos, reports Xinhua news agency. “I went back to training, supper happy #CORONAOUT,” the Brazilian posted on his Twitter account on Friday. The absence of these key players had weakened Thomas Tuchel’s side significantly as the Ligue 1 defending champions launched their title defence with a shocking 0-1 defeat at newly-promoted Lens on Thursday.
by Marek Rodak, Lacazette pounced to tap home into the empty net. Arsenal looked relatively comfortable in the first half, with Fulham lacking bite, and the visitors were nearly 2-0 up as Willian’s whipped free-kick from 20 yards came off the foot of the post. Arsenal did get their second four minutes after the break as Gabriel rose easily above Michael Hector to meet Willian’s wicked corner, the ball going in off the defender’s shoulder. Under
Manchester, Sep 12 (IANS): Half centuries from Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh followed by some brilliant bowling effort from Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa helped Australia beat England by 19 runs in the first ODI despite maiden century from Sam Billings. Put into bat, Australia found themselves reeling at 123/5 at one stage on Friday. However, Maxwell and Marsh took the responsibility on their shoulders and from there on, they took the team’s score to 249/6. While Maxwell scored 77 off just 59 balls, Marsh contributed with valuable 73 runs and helped their team post a total of 294/9 in their allotted 50 overs. Chasing what would have been a record chase at the Old Trafford in ODIs, England found themselves in trouble rather quickly as Hazlewood claimed the wickets of Jason Roy

Dominic Thiem
New York, Sep 12 (Agencies): Dominic Thiem of Austria will play Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the US Open final for their first Grand Slam titles after they won their last-four matches in contrasting styles. Second seed Thiem ousted third-seeded Russian and last year’s runnerup Daniil Medvedev in a closely fought three-setter that was packed with powerful baseline rallies and impressive serving. The 27-year-old Thiem won 6-2, 7-6 (9/7), 7-6 (7/5) in 2hr 56 min inside Arthur Ashe Stadium to reach his fourth Grand Slam final. Earlier, Zverev came from two sets down to complete a remarkable comeback against 20thseeded Spaniard Pablo

It marked the first time in Zverev’s career that he came from two sets behind to win. Zverev made 36 unforced errors in the first two sets compared to just 12 for Carreno Busta as the nerves of the occasion seemed to get the better of him. But Zverev began to cut down on his mistakes in the third set, upping his service game and taking control of rallies with more powerful, accurate groundstrokes. Zverev becomes the first German man to reach the final of a tennis major
since Rainer Schuttler at the 2003 Australian Open. This year’s US Open field has been depleted by the absence of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. The tournament was blown wide open by the disqualification of world number one and heavy favourite Novak Djokovic in the last 16 for hitting a line judge with the ball. It means Sunday’s final will see a first-time Grand Slam champion for the first time since Croatian Marin Cilic won at Flushing Meadows in 2014. It also means there will be a Grand Slam champion other than Djokovic, Nadal or Federer for the first time since Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka won the third of his tennis majors at the US Open in 2016.

NBA: Celtics reach Eastern Conference finals
B o s to n, S e p 1 2 (Agencies): Jayson Tatum had 29 points and 12 rebounds, Jaylen Brown scored 21 and the Boston Celtics advanced to the Eastern Conference finals with a 92-87 win over the Toronto Raptors in Game 7 on Friday night. Marcus Smart added 16 points and Kemba Walker 14 as the Celtics set up a meeting with the Miami Heat in their third conference finals appearance in the last four seasons. Game 1 of the series will take place Tuesday. Fred VanVleet had 20 points to lead the Raptors, whose title defence came to an end after coming back from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits in the series. Kyle Lowry had 16 points, and Pascal Siakam scored 13 with 11 rebounds. Toronto turned the ball over 18 times, six coming in the fourth quarter. Still, the Raptors were within 89-87 with 1:21 remaining. Siakam got a breakaway with a chance to tie, but Smart blocked him
new handball rules, the goal stood, but would have likely been disallowed last season. And it was soon 3-0 through a superb team goal; Lacazette did superbly to hold up the ball on halfway, before Willian found Aubayemang galloping into the box with a diagonal. The Gabon forward did the rest, curling into the top corner from 15 yards. It means Willian is the first player to assist two goals on his Premier League debut for Arsenal since Ray Parlour in August 1992 against Liverpool. Aubameyang saw a shot from an acute angle cleared off the line by Hector after rounding the goalkeeper, but Arsenal did manage to keep Fulham out to earn their first clean sheet in four games, helped by the superb Gabriel on his first appearance since the £27m move from Lille. Arsenal looked welldrilled off the ball and assured on it throughout as Arteta looks to turn a work in progress into tangible success, while Fulham know they’ll have easier opponents as they look to succeed where they failed in 2019. Iran executes wrestler Afkari
Maguire to stay as Man United captain
Tehran, Sep 12 (AP): Iran’s state TV reported on Saturday that the country’s authorities have executed a wrestler for allegedly murdering a man after President Donald Trump asked for the 27-year-old condemned man’s life to be spared. State TV quoted the chief justice of Fars province, Kazem Mousavi as saying on Saturday, “The retaliation sentence against Navid Afkari, the killer of Hassan Turkman, was carried out this morning in Adelabad prison in Shiraz.” Afkari’s case had drawn the attention of a social media campaign that portrayed him and his brothers as victims targeted over participating in protests against Iran’s Shiite theocracy in 2018. Authorities accused Afkari of stabbing a water supply company employee in Shiraz amid the unrest. Iran broadcast the wrestler’s televised confession last week. The segment resembled hundreds of other suspected coerced confessions aired over the last decade in the Islamic Republic.
Lo n d o n, S e p 1 2 (Agencies): Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Harry Maguire will remain Manchester United’s captain this season despite his involvement in a Greek court case. Maguire was given a suspended 21-month sentence last month after the England defender was found guilty of assaulting a police officer, swearing, resisting arrest and bribery during an incident in Mykonos. United boss Solskjaer has made it clear he will not punish his centre-back by stripping him of the captaincy. “He’s handled it really well and, of course, I’ll be here to support him,” Solskjaer told United’s website on Saturday. “He is going to be our captain. We’ll just leave Harry and his people and the process to run.” Maguire was a key figure in his first season with United following his £80 million ($102 million) move from Leicester, which made him the world’s most
en ODI century but was unable to keep up with the rate, and eventually fell for 118 on the final ball of the innings as Australia registered a 19-run win to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The victory also helped Australia register their first points in the ICC World Cup Super League from their first match in the
tournament, moving equal with Ireland on 10 points. The two teams will now face each other in the second ODI on Sunday at the same venue. Brief scores: Australia 294/9 (Maxwell 77, Marsh 73; Mark Wood 3/54) beat England 275/9 (Billings 118, Bairstow 84; Zampa 4/55) by 19 runs.
