KOHIMA, SEP 17 (NPN): State BJP president and Higher & Technical Education and Tribal Affairs minister Temjen Imna Along has asserted that his party’s stand on Naga political issue was very definitive and claimed that party leaders were doing their best to give a solution to the Nagas. Delivering his presidential address at the semi-virtual celebration of the 70th birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at State BJP head office here Thursday, Along said the Government of India cannot choose what Nagas want, but it was up to the Nagas to decide. For reaching an honourable, acceptable and inclusive solution, he remarked it was for the Nagas to be definitive, and not the BJP leadership. Lamenting that

among the 16 Naga tribes, the solution could be acceptable to only one tribe but not acceptable to another, the minister urged the people of Nagaland to unite and give what is acceptable. Referring to the differing demands of Nagas vis-àvis territory, Along said “If we have fragmented vision, goals, attitude and desire, let us not blame the Government of India led by Modi for not being able to give a solution.” He observed that Nagas were proud of their tradition and culture, but
he stressed that they ought to have acceptability among themselves too. He lauded the consistent efforts of Modi in reaching a solution to the vexed Naga issue, which, according to him, was proof of his able leadership. Pointing to his relentless efforts at building a robust nation and bring all the deprived parts of the country together, he said a party with definitive leadership was assertive and goal-centric. A short biographical note on Modi was delivered by state BJP ST Morcha general secretary Lovili Swu, while a special prayer for the PM was delivered by KABA pastor Temjenmongba Sempo. Earlier, SABCK pastor Rev G Kiyeto Sema delivered the invocation prayer. The programme was chaired by minority morcha president Deep Kumar.

Kohima Police through its PRO clarified that it had only one checkgate at Khuzama, which is on the Nagaland-Manipur border. When confronted by Kohima senior superintendent of police (SSP) on the allegations, PRO claimed that both KDTODU president Rüvese Sokha and general secretary Küvethi Puro explained that they issued the press release on the basis of complaints by some truck drivers, though they could not pinpoint any specific incident. PRO said that the union’s general secretary had told the SSP that he did not attend the meeting and had no knowledge about the press release, even though it appeared in the media that he was a signatory. Harsimrat quits Cabinet over farm bills; too late says Capt NEW DELHI, SEP 17 (PTI): In a setback to the Modi government, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) member Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Thursday resigned from the Union Cabinet in protest against three farm sectors bills. “I have resigned from the Union Cabinet in protest against anti-farmer ordinances and legislation. Proud to stand with farmers as their daughter and sister,” she tweeted, barely hours before the bills were passed by Lok Sabha. Her resignation came soon after her husband and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal strongly opposed the bills in Lok Sabha, claiming that they will “destroy” the agriculture sector in Punjab, and announced that the Union minister will quit the government in protest. In her four-page resignation letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kaur said despite her persistent pleas and repeated efforts from her party, the Central government has not taken farmers on board regarding these bills. Asserting that every

member of her party is a farmer, she said the SAD is merely continuing its age old tradition of being a champion of farmers’ interests. SAD is the BJP’s oldest ally and the development highlights the frayed ties between the two parties over the agriculture reforms being pursued by the Union government through these proposed legislations. Reacting to Kaur’s resignation, Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amrinder Singh tweeted “Harsimrat Kaur’s decision to quit Union Cabinet is another in the long chain of theatrics being enacted by Akali Dal which has still not quit ruling coalition. It’s motivated not by any concern for farmers but to save their own dwindling political fortunes. Too little too late.”
