COVID-19 pandemic causing mental trauma

DIMAPUR, SEP 17 (NPN): A recent survey conducted by the state Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) department has shown that insomnia, anxiety and depression have gripped a sizeable section of the people of Nagaland during COVID-19 pandemic. The online mental health and psychosocial wellbeing survey was between June 12 and July 15 in the backdrop of COVID-19 pandemic. H&FW principal director Dr Vizolie Z Suokhrie said its objective was to assess the prevalence of insomnia (sleep disorder), anxiety, depression and somatization (anxiety leading to physical pain). It was an online survey where any person in Nagaland over the age of 16 years could participate. Standard questionnaires were used – Insomnia Severity Index for insomnia, Patient Health Questionnaire-4 for anxiety and depression, and Somatic Symptoms Scale-8 for somatization. The fear of COVID-19 scale was used to assess the level of the phobia associated with the pandemic. Altogether 1,127 respondents participated in the study of which 58.2%

were males. The mean age of the respondents was 32 years, while 80% of them were graduates or above, 65% were unmarried, 75% lived in urban areas and 82% were living with families. (See table) Among the respondents, 52% perceived to have low risk of COVID at workplace, 34% at moderate risk and 15% at high risk. While there were respondents from all districts, majority of them were from Kohima (40%) and Dimapur (35%) districts.

Statistical analysis showed that women and respondents with high fear of COVID-19 (as per Fear of COVID score) were found to have significantly higher risk of experiencing insomnia, anxiety, depression, and somatic symptoms. Also people in urban areas and people who perceived to have moderate or high risk of exposure to COVID-19 at work place had significantly higher risk of experiencing insomnia. cational qualification below graduation had significantly higher risk of experiencing depression. Frontline workers (medical and non medical) had lower risk of experiencing depression. Other factors like marital status, living with family/ staying alone did not significantly affect the risk of experiencing the common mental health conditions assessed in this survey. The study was done online with limited scope that aimed to only provide a baseline prevalence data on the common mental health conditions in Nagaland during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the COVID-19 pandemic, District Mental Health Programmes under H&FW department collaborated with All Nagaland Counsellors’ Association (ANCA) to provide telephonic counselling services for any mental health issues like stress, anxiety, depression, etc. People needing assistance can call the tollfree State helpline number 1800 345 0019 and choose option 2, or send a request message through WhatsApp to 7005251298 to avail the service.

KOHIMA, SEP 17 (NPN): State BJP president and Higher & Technical Education and Tribal Affairs minister Temjen Imna Along has asserted that his party’s stand on Naga political issue was very definitive and claimed that party leaders were doing their best to give a solution to the Nagas. Delivering his presidential address at the semi-virtual celebration of the 70th birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at State BJP head office here Thursday, Along said the Government of India cannot choose what Nagas want, but it was up to the Nagas to decide. For reaching an honourable, acceptable and inclusive solution, he remarked it was for the Nagas to be definitive, and not the BJP leadership. Lamenting that

Temjen Imna Along (NP)

among the 16 Naga tribes, the solution could be acceptable to only one tribe but not acceptable to another, the minister urged the people of Nagaland to unite and give what is acceptable. Referring to the differing demands of Nagas vis-àvis territory, Along said “If we have fragmented vision, goals, attitude and desire, let us not blame the Government of India led by Modi for not being able to give a solution.” He observed that Nagas were proud of their tradition and culture, but

he stressed that they ought to have acceptability among themselves too. He lauded the consistent efforts of Modi in reaching a solution to the vexed Naga issue, which, according to him, was proof of his able leadership. Pointing to his relentless efforts at building a robust nation and bring all the deprived parts of the country together, he said a party with definitive leadership was assertive and goal-centric. A short biographical note on Modi was delivered by state BJP ST Morcha general secretary Lovili Swu, while a special prayer for the PM was delivered by KABA pastor Temjenmongba Sempo. Earlier, SABCK pastor Rev G Kiyeto Sema delivered the invocation prayer. The programme was chaired by minority morcha president Deep Kumar.

Kohima Police refute KDTODU’s allegation DIMAPUR, SEP 17 (NPN): The Kohima District Police has dismissed Kohima District Truck Owners and Drivers’ Union’s (KDTODU) allegation of illegal taxation as baseless. Kohima Police through its PRO clarified that it had only one checkgate at Khuzama, which is on the Nagaland-Manipur border. When confronted by Kohima senior superintendent of police (SSP) on the allegations, PRO claimed that both KDTODU president Rüvese Sokha and general secretary Küvethi Puro explained that they issued the press release on the basis of complaints by some truck drivers, though they could not pinpoint any specific incident. PRO said that the union’s general secretary had told the SSP that he did not attend the meeting and had no knowledge about the press release, even though it appeared in the media that he was a signatory. Taking serious note of the allegations, the SSP has called for a meeting with KDTODU leaders at 11 a.m. on Friday for necessary clarifications.

Harsimrat quits Cabinet over farm bills; too late says Capt NEW DELHI, SEP 17 (PTI): In a setback to the Modi government, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) member Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Thursday resigned from the Union Cabinet in protest against three farm sectors bills. “I have resigned from the Union Cabinet in protest against anti-farmer ordinances and legislation. Proud to stand with farmers as their daughter and sister,” she tweeted, barely hours before the bills were passed by Lok Sabha. Her resignation came soon after her husband and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal strongly opposed the bills in Lok Sabha, claiming that they will “destroy” the agriculture sector in Punjab, and announced that the Union minister will quit the government in protest. In her four-page resignation letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kaur said despite her persistent pleas and repeated efforts from her party, the Central government has not taken farmers on board regarding these bills. Asserting that every

Harsimrat Kaur Badal

member of her party is a farmer, she said the SAD is merely continuing its age old tradition of being a champion of farmers’ interests. SAD is the BJP’s oldest ally and the development highlights the frayed ties between the two parties over the agriculture reforms being pursued by the Union government through these proposed legislations. Reacting to Kaur’s resignation, Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amrinder Singh tweeted “Harsimrat Kaur’s decision to quit Union Cabinet is another in the long chain of theatrics being enacted by Akali Dal which has still not quit ruling coalition. It’s motivated not by any concern for farmers but to save their own dwindling political fortunes. Too little too late.”

According to PAM, CNTC also stated unresolved issues be taken up in the future through a political means. While appreciating the stand of CNTC, PAM convenor Zeliang expressed the view that all tribal apex bodies should

in unison and work towards amalgamation of the various Naga political groups so that there was only one agreement and one solution. He said that with a collective effort “we can come to a common platform and achieve the much desired and aspirations of the Naga people.” Fur ther, Zeliang stated that Naga issue was sacred to all the Nagas and at this critical juncture, tribal and political colours should be shunted out “for the welfare and well being of all.

Mnp CM distributes loans to vendors

Manipur CM N Biren distributing loans to vendors in Imphal on Thursday. (NP) Correspondent IMPHAL, Sep 17: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Thursday distributed loans to vendors in the state hit hard by the COVID-19 induced lockdown. Loans were provided to 1269 vendors of different districts to help them resume vending activities which have been affected by the nationwide COVID19 lockdown. Of the total beneficiaries, 803 were street vendors and the loans to them were provided under the Pradhan Mantri Street Vendor’s Atmanirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi). The rest 466 were regular licensed vendors and loans to them were provided under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY)SHISHU. The loans were provided to facilitate working capital and opening up of

opportunities for the street vendors to move up the economic ladder during and post lockdown, the chief minister said on the occasion. Singh asserted that the state government understood the financial difficulties faced by the vendors during the pandemic. Assuring loans to more vendors hit hard by the lockdown, Singh informed that loans under the schemes would be provided to around 20,000 vendors from different parts of the state. The chief minister appreciated the efforts and support of the bank officials in providing loans to the street vendors and appealed to banks to disburse the loan amounts to the remaining applicants as soon as possible. Speaking on the grim COVID-19 situation of the state, Singh alleged that the rising number of Covid-19

cases in the state was due to the non- compliance of SOPs and protocols issued by the government from time to time. He warned of stringent action against those defying tprotocols under National Disaster Management Act”, while urging the people to strictly follow the guidelines and SOPs issued by the government. Mentioned may be made that the state government had already distributed loans to 817 vendors of different districts on August 25 last under PMSVANidhi of the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs. PM-SVANidhi is a special micro credit scheme for providing affordable working capital loan to street vendors affected due to the lockdown to resume their livelihoods. The scheme is valid until March 2022. Under

this scheme, the street vendors vending within the limits of an urban local body as on March 24, 2020, can avail working capital loan of up to Rs 10,000, which is repayable in monthly instalments within the tenure of one year. On timely and early repayment of loan, an interest subsidy @ 7% per annum will be credited to the bank accounts of beneficiaries through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) on quarterly basis. The scheme promotes digital transactions through cash back incentives up to an amount of Rs. 7100 per month. The vendors can avail the facility of escalation of the credit limit on timely / early repayment of loan. On the occasion, the chief minister also distributed awards to officials of Jiribam Municipal Council and Kakching Municipal Council for bagging the Cleanest City in NorthEast India and Best City in citizen feedback awards respectively under Swachh Survekshan 2020 of the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA). State CAF & PD minister Karam Shyam, PHE minister L Dikho, agricultural minister V Hangkhanlian, forest and environment minister Awangbow Newmai among others attended the occasion.

Bollywood teleserial

O

ver three months after the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput(SSR), allegedly by suicide when his body was found hanging in his Mumbai apartment on June 14, the incident has sparked nationwide shock with the media, especially the electronic media in hyper sensational gear and obsession-mode. The continuing SSR saga has at times even overshadowed the COVID-19 pandemic issue. Television viewers are bombarded with daily doses of the case, which is turning out to be like a tele-serial. Trial by media has also pushed the suspected ‘foul play’ in the death of SSR to the background and brought out two protagonists, both starlets of Bollywood- Rhea Choudhary (former girl friend of SSR) and the aggressive proponent of the abetment to suicide theory, Kangana Ranaut. Due to the over-obsession of the media, the case has also unexpectedly brought political parties- BJP and Shiv Sena in the fray. What has sparked intense inquisitiveness was the trial by the media, which questioned Rhea Chakraborty’s role in it from different angles – money laundering, drug abuse and abetment to suicide and which has led the case to become a web of bizarre theories and motivated speculations. Kangana joined the ‘justice for Sushant’ chorus and a gleeful media lapped it up to keep their prime time debates going and their audience gratified. Kangana Ranaut who has been raising voice against nepotism and mafias in Bollywood made shocking revelations about SSR’s case when she maintained that the late actor was driven to suicide by a Bollywood mafia. Kangana attracted controversy by criticising the Sena in comparing its coalition government in Maharastra to Taliban and followed that up by saying Mumbai felt like ‘Pakistan-controlled Kashmir.’ The Sena activists saw red and threatened her. In quick response, the centre provided Kangana Y plus security cover, quite unheard of for a non-VVIP. Undoubtedly, this left no doubt that Kangana is the celebrity face of the BJP’s behind-the-scenes fight against the Sena. Kangana made more enemies than friends in Bollywood with some describing her as having an enormous ego and a motor-mouth. Her tiff with several Bollywood stars and writers has even entered parliament when Jaya Bachchan reacted to Kangana for calling Bollywood a ‘gutter’. Kangana’s attacks may be dismissed as ranting by her critics but the government at the Centre has taken them seriously with sleuths of Enforcement Directorate, Narcotic Control Bureau(NCB), CBI raiding premises of various people. The other protagonist and media villain - Rhea Choudhary- was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on September 8 afternoon in Mumbai. The court remanded her to 14 days of judicial custody and rejected her application for bail. The entire SSR serial has also turned a political showdown taking on regional contours, largely driven by the electorate that forms their core voter base. In Bihar, the BJP and the Janata Dal (United) are invoking Sushant’s roots in the state in their calls for justice. In neighbouring Bengal, the Trinamool Congress and the Congress have weighed in on the controversy by citing the part Bengali lineage of Rhea Chakraborty. In Himachal Pradesh, the BJP has mounted a vociferous defence of “daughter of the state” Kangana Ranaut, who is now a major player in the entire controversy. Certainly, this is reel life imitating real life.

DailyDevotion Is There Good in Temptation?

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man… —1 Corinthians 10:13 The word temptation has come to mean something bad to us today, but we tend to use the word in the wrong way. Temptation itself is not sin; it is something we are bound to face simply by virtue of being human. Not to be tempted would mean that we were already so shameful that we would be beneath contempt. Yet many of us suffer from temptations we should never have to suffer, simply because we have refused to allow God to lift us to a higher level where we would face temptations of another kind. A person’s inner nature, what he possesses in the inner, spiritual part of his being, determines what he is tempted by on the outside. The temptation fits the true nature of the person being tempted and reveals the possibilities of his nature. Every person actually determines or sets the level of his own temptation, because temptation will come to him in accordance with the level of his controlling, inner nature. Temptation comes to me, suggesting a possible shortcut to the realization of my highest goal— it does not direct me toward what I understand to be evil, but toward what I understand to be good. Temptation is something that confuses me for a while, and I don’t know whether something is right or wrong. When I yield to it, I have made lust a god, and the temptation itself becomes the proof that it was only my own fear that prevented me from falling into the sin earlier. Temptation is not something we can escape; in fact, it is essential to the well-rounded life of a person. Beware of thinking that you are tempted as no one else— what you go through is the common inheritance of the human race, not something that no one has ever before endured. God does not save us from temptations— He sustains us in the midst of them (see Hebrews 2:18 and Hebrews 4:15-16).

Post-mortem

Children and Screen Time Effect: A Pandemic Concern A few parents comment that their children have become busier with the online classes than during the pre-pandemic when children used to attend physical classrooms. Their screen time has drastically increased during the Covid-19 lockdown with classes and recreations going digital particularly in the urban setting. There is increase in cases that children are easily agitated, angry, and moody; occasional argument with family members, shoulder pain complains, headache and mild fever; mentally drained and difficulty in concentration; showing moderate-severe anxiety; lack of sleep and exhaustion, fidgeting and restlessness. These are signs of screen use related stress and anxiety. A study on screen time which includes television, computers, smartphones, video games, and tablets reveals that higher screen time results in poor quality sleep. This in turn, has adverse effect on the behavioural health (Justin, 2016). Moreover, the sedentary lifestyle of children infront of the screen leads to the following symptoms such as “overweight and obesity, alterations in blood glucose and cholesterol, poor school performance, decreases social interactions, and lower levels of physical activities.” What is worrisome is that the health adverse impact may continue even into adulthood (Lecena, 2015). Furthermore, Stiglic and Viner (2019) did a study on children between 0-18 years and conclude that excessive screen use is associated with irritability, low mood and disturbs cognitive and socio-emotional development of a child. This in turn leads to poor educational performance. How much is too much? An online survey was conducted in 2013 on 2034 Australian adults to understand the screen time limit. This survey was restricted to watching Television and using Computer only. 68% of the respondents said children should not be exposed to 2 hours a day of screen time during school working days. These adult respondents mentioned that their leisure-related screen use increases by about 2 hours per day in the weekends. The same study also reveals that adults’ screen use can influence the

children’s screen time. Adults who uses screen less than 2 hours a day would want their children to set screen limits to less than 2 hours (Schoeppe, et al., 2016). Cassidy-Bushrow (2014), did a comparative study between the time spent on internet and adolescent blood pressure and concludes, “2 hours a day, 5 days a week”’ as a standard of measurement for all internet-related use. According to this study, there is a screen holiday of 2 days in a week. Using internet less than 2 hours a day and 4 days a week is considered light use. Whereas, using internet for 2 or more hours a day for full week is considered heavy use. We also see a slight variation between aggressive internet game play and non-game internet use. The American Medical Association marks that playing internet game for 2 or more hours a day is already considered heavy user [Clinton & Scalise, 2013]. The reason is because internet games are much aggressive in nature as compared to using screen for online classes or social media chat such as Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, etc. From the above presentations, we can see that whether it is online or offline screen use, exposure to more than 2 hours a day for full week is considered heavy use. Keeping this benchmark in perspective, the following data drawn from the contextual case study on the students’ online class during this Covid-19 lockdown period will raise several questions for extensive and comprehensive research. Lockdown Screen Time: A Case Study The screen time of 3 students were observed for ten consecutive days from 2-11 September 2020 during this lockdown period in relation to their online/digital classes. The individual screen time is extracted from the Digital Wellbeing Tool of their personal smartphones. The data indicates that a student is on the screen in an average of 5 to 7 hours doing school-related activities. Sometimes, the students are on the screen for about 10-11 hours doing school-related work. The chart is given below:

Churches to the rescue

This observation does not include screen time of TV, Computer, and Tablet which are used for non-study recreational purpose. In the case of Student 1 and Student 2, their respective smartphones are specifically used for study purpose during this lockdown, and the handset is not shared with other siblings for the same purpose. For Student 3, the Smartphone is a single-user and is occasionally used for other recreational social media activities. Student 3 also uses iPad as an alternative gadget for study purposes. The screen use for online and mobile game related activities, and the type of games played is not included in this study because it is a completely different subject matter. The above case study shows that children are exposed to digital screens, not double, but 3-4 times or more than the recommended safe limit during this Covid-19 pandemic. And this digital class phenomena has been going on now for about 5 months since the beginning of Lockdown, where there is unparalleled imbalance between physical and mental activities for the children. Some children are already getting lethargic to doing assignments through smartphones. While some are displaying signs of getting habituated, rather becoming dependent on the screen. Such children are finding difficult to detach from any form of screen-based gadget. One child uses the word “Jobless” to express the feeling when the person was asked to switchoff all screen-based gadgets such as personal smartphone, TV, and computer. Some children are showing lack of concentration and diminishing quality time for their studyrelated works. Way forward: 1. Standard Guideline for Digital School Work: The Government through its concerned Departments may bring out a Uniform Standard Guideline on taking online classes, sending assignments and conducting lectures through various digital platforms. We cannot leave this matter to individual schools alone nor be limited to Government Schools versus Private Schools or Urbanbased schools versus Rural-based school. The issue is not simply about when the school should re-open. A pin-pointed, objective-specific policy related to con-

ducting online classes and tests, tailoring out the primary and secondary subjects and lessons, percentage to be covered for completing academic requirements, etc. will allow concerned subject teachers to perform precise objective-oriented online classes and lessen the children from screen use. 2. Lifestyle Change: The subject on excessive screen use is a complex matter. The intervention programs are still at an experimental stage. Thus, the only way to help our children from excessive Screen Use Syndrome is to take preventive measures. This can be done by undergoing certain lifestyle change by tightening up family rules, values and expectations. The lifestyle change related to screen use must take top-bottom hierarchical process, meaning it must begin from the parents. 3. Family-Based Approach: Due to the multi-dimensional nature of the problem related to Excessive Screen Use, it is insufficient to focus on the concerned child alone for cognitivebehavioural change. The whole family members must get involve and journey together in the therapeutic process to bring change. 4. Screen Holiday: The best way to beat screen related stress, anxiety and behavioural change is to isolate oneself from screen use. At regular interval of time, power-off all screen related gadgets such as smartphones, TV, Computers, etc. for certain period of time. Replace your child’s activities with the conventional method of reading printed-bound books, play or do household chores. Conclusion The screen related stress and anxiety is already showing on our children. Therefore, the issue on screen-based behavioural change must be taken as community challenge. We cannot leave it as a personal choice anymore especially to our children. Neither should it be considered as an individual family matter nor a child’s problem alone. Loss in quality life will hugely impact our economy, skilled-based professions, and a generation suffering from various forms of mental disorders and physical ailments. Rev. NEW DELHI, SEP 17 (PTI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday asserted that no force in the world can stop Indian soldiers from patrolling the country’s border in Ladakh region. Making a statement in Rajya Sabha on the situation in eastern Ladakh, he said China has amassed troops on the border and in response India has made appropriate counter deployment. China, he said, made “provocative military manoeuvres” on August 29/30 in an attempt to change the status quo in the south bank area of Pangong Lake in the Ladakh region at a time when the two sides were engaged in military and diplomatic talks to de-escalate tensions. NEW DELHI, SEP 17 (AGENCIES): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday continued his relentless criticism of the Narendra Modi-led government over the rising unemployment in the country. Gandhi said that “employment was dignity” and wondered for how long would the government deny according this dignity to its citizens. “Massive unemployment has forced the youth to call today National Unemployment Day,” Gandhi said, referring to a campaign launched by the youth on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday, to lodge their protest against the government policies. “Employment is dignity. For how long will the government deny it?” The Congress leader also tagged a media report that claimed over one crore people registered on government job portals seeking employment opportunities, but that only 1.77 lakh jobs were available. Hours before, Gandhi wished Modi on his birthday. Meanwhile, the Congress also joined the National Unemployment Day campaign, which became the top trend on Twitter on Thursday. Twitter users used the tag to remind the

prime minister of the acute economic crisis and joblessness they are facing. In a series of tweets, the party criticised the government for its policies and blamed it for the economic devastation caused by the coronavirus pandemic. It said that the unprecedented unemployment crisis was a Modi’s “cruel idea of a return gift” on his birthday. “The unplanned lockdown of the Bharatiya Janata Party stagnated every Indian’s life and their economic activities; they were stripped of employment, they stopped working,” the Congress said. “But till now the BJP government has not been able to give any relief to the countrymen.” The party added that the looming crisis put the “future of the youth in jeopardy, the future of India in jeopardy”. “Of all the problems plaguing India

right now, Modi ji this one begs your urgent attention,” it said. “Please do your duty as the prime minister.” On Se ptember 12, Gandhi mocked the government and said its “well planned fight” against the coronavirus pandemic had put India into an abyss of historic gross domestic product reduction, loss of employment, stressed loans and globally daily highest cases and deaths. Earlier in August, the Congress leader had warned that the government would be unable to provide jobs to its youth within six to seven months. The Indian economy saw its worst ever contraction of 23.9% in the second quarter of April-June, as the lockdown imposed to contain the spread of the coronavirus upended livelihoods and businesses. The numbers reflect the onset of the deepest recession in India since 1996, when the country first began publishing its quarterly GDP figures. Since the pandemic shut businesses in March, unemployment in the country has surged sharply. On August 18, a report by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy said nearly 50 lakh salaried persons lost their jobs in July as a result of a partial lockdown.

NPF Tobu A/C seeks clarification Three militants, woman killed in Kashmir encounter from F&CS director DIMAPUR, SEP 17 (NPN): NPF party 55 Tobu A/C unit has sought clarification from director of Food & Civil Supplies (F&CS) why 3 kg of rice at the rate of Rs 5 per kg was being sold by fair price shops (FPS) in Tobu to ration card holders instead of 5 kg of rice at the rate of Rs 3 under Priority Household (PHH) as per the National Food Security Act, 2013. Alleging that people were not getting other essential commodities like dal, sugar, etc, barring rice, NPF’s unit president S Ngaubu Konyak and gen-

eral secretary P Shammaoh Konyak in a letter to the director wanted to know where were the remaining rice and other essential commodities and why Rs 2 was being charged extra. Further, according to the letter, the total number of PHH beneficiaries in Tobu was 4,150 till June this year. However, it claimed that the names of 1,330 households were removed from the beneficiaries’ list in July, August and September. The unit also asked the director to explain the reason behind the sudden and hasty decrease in the

number of beneficiaries and whether those 1,330 deleted beneficiaries were not Indian citizens and hence not liable to receive any privilege from the Government of India. Pointing out that FPS in Tobu charged for transportation of rice under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) in April, May, June, July and August, NPF also sought to know from the director whether the F&CS department was not responsible for transportation and, if not, who would pay the transportation charge and from which source.

So far this year, we have done 72 operations, in which 177 militants were killed, including 12 in Jammu,” the DGP said. He said 22 militants from Pakistan were among these 177, adding this “shows Pakistan’s direct involvement in terror activities”. “Most of the terrorists working in outfits like Lashkar and Jaish are from Pakistan. I hope the way the forces are conducting the operations, we will achieve more successes on the peacebuilding and operations front,” Singh said. He said the endeavour of the security forces was to avoid collateral damage in every operation.

We reject Islamabad’s obsession Modi turns 70; wishes pour in from across world with territorial aggrandisement: Govt

DIMAPUR: Former vicechairman of Tobu town Ad hoc Town Council (ATC) L Kaiba Konyak and former member of Tobu town ATC A Yenso Konyak have sought clarificatino from the chief minister Neiphiu Rio whether the state government had entrusted Department of Under Developed Areas (DUDA) adviser N Bongkhao to select/appoint members of Adhoc Town Council/ Urban Local Bodies, directly/personally without consulting the general public or the person/ward/ town concerned as well as the general administration. In an open letter to the chief minister, the duo demanded to know details of the official notification authorising the DUDA adviser for appointing members to urban local Bodies, if the government had indeed

entrusted him. They also attached the letter purportedly signed by DUDA adviser on his official writing pad, where it stated that 11 members were “temporarily selected” to render support and cooperation to the administration (ADC Tobu) for smooth functioning, until the official date of ULB elections was announced. Further, pointing out that the candidates awaiting declaration of results of the Town Council election too wished to know from the government relaxation of “null and void order”, they said if not then what action will be taken against Bongkhao for violation of government policy. Instead of confusing and fooling the general public, Kaiba and Yenso demanded that the chief

minister personally declare/ notify counting of election result, which has been kept in abeyance, especially for Tobu Town Council. Since urban local bodies (ULB) election was kept in abeyance, they said that the people of all wards had, after consultations with the administration, democratically selected their ward chairmen and representatives, excluding the candidates, to assist the administration in smooth functioning of the town led by vice-chairman and secretary. However, Kaiba and Yenso said it was unfortunate that DUDA adviser had personally selected/appointed new members without seeking public consent, which was totally illegal and against all democratic norms.

rival, the US ambassador to the United Nations, Kelly Craft, had lunch Wednesday with Taiwan’s top official in New York, a meeting she called historic and a further step in the Trump administration’s campaign to strengthen relations with the self-governing island that China claims is part of its territory. Craft said her lunch with James K J Lee, director of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, was the first meeting between a top Taiwan official and a United States ambassador to the United Nations since 1971, when the China seat at the UN was passed from Taipei to Beijing. “I’m looking to do the right thing by my president, and I feel that he has sought to strengthen and deepen this bilateral relationship with Taiwan and I want to continue that on behalf of the administration,” she told The Associated Press. The steps come at a time when Pakistan is working hard to comply with all the 27 points of the Action Plan given by FATF to see itself out of the ‘grey list’. Earlier this year, a Pakistan anti-terrorism court sentenced JuD chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed to five years and six months imprisonment in two cases, after finding him guilty of terror financing and association with other banned outfits. JuD’s other top leaders, at least 13 in number, were also booked in about two dozen cases of terror financing and money laundering during July last year. The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) registered the cases under the Anti-Terror Act in Lahore, Gujranwala and Multan against JUD, Lashkar-e-Taiba and charity umbrella organisation Falah-e-Insaniyat Foundation (FIF). It was revealed that the accused were raising funds under at least five trusts, namely the Dawatul Irshad Trust, the Moaz Bin Jabal Trust, the Al Anfaal Trust, the Al Madina Foundation Trust and the Alhamd Trust.

Suga’s Cabinet logged a support rating of 64% in a Mainichi newspaper survey released Thursday, exceeding the 52% support Abe had at the start of his government in 2012. Respondents cited expectations for Suga’s policies, as well as continuity and his personality for their support, apparently welcoming his reformist pledges and background as a self-made politician from a rural farming village, the Mainichi said. The telephone survey of 1,025 people aged 18 or older was conducted earlier Thursday, the paper said. It did not provide a margin of error.

Administrative Reforms Minister Taro Kono said he will immediately launch a hotline for people to report problems. Abe’s government had been criticized for appearing aloof and not listening to the concerns of citizens. Suga said his priorities are fighting the coronavirus and turning around an economy battered by the pandemic. He is also expected to continue Abe’s economic and diplomatic stance. Washington, Sep 17 (IANS): US President Donald Trump has claimed that mail-in voting posed a greater threat to the November 3 election than foreign interference, the media reported. Addressing reporters at the White House on Wednesday, the President said that “our biggest threat to this election is Governors from opposing parties controlling ballots, millions of ballots”, The Hill news website reported. “To me, that’s a much bigger threat than foreign countries because much of the stuff coming out about foreign countries turned out to be untrue,” he added. The President’s remarks came despite warnings from intelligence officials that China, Iran and Russia were all attempting to interfere in

Kabul, Sep 17 (IANS): A Taliban spokesman said that the militant group will not agree to a ceasefire unless the peace negotiators can discuss the main cause of the Afghan war, the media reported on Thursday. Speaking to TOLO News from the Taliban office in Doha, the spokesman, Mohammad Naeem, claimed that the Taliban has reduced the level of violence with the preliminary round of the intra-Afghan talks that started on September 12. But he said that the Afghan government has not halted its offensive operations. “It does not make sense to end 20 years of war in one hour. In our perspective, it will be logical to discuss the main aspects of the problems and the war and then finalize a ceasefire so that the problem is resolved permanently,” Naeem told TOLO News. “Suppose, if we announce a ceasefire today, but then we fail to reach an agreement at the negotiating table tomorrow, do we go toward the war again?” he queried. The spokesman further said that the Taliban wants the establishment of an Islamic system in which the values of people of the country are reflected. He said that the peace negotiation talks will have some ups and downs, but was optimistic about the outcomes. “We have entered the peace process with a strong will and determination, we want this problem finally to be resolved.

the upcoming election. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, many states across the US have expanded access to mail ballots. A record number of people are expected to vote by mail. While 10 states are sending out ballots to voters, others were sending out applications for absentee ballots, said The Hill news website report. Trump has made several remarks against postal balloting recently. Last month, the President said that universal mail-in voting would be “catastrophic” and make the country “a laughing stock”, while adding that he had no issue with absentee voting, which he himself uses. His remarks intensified after the US Postal Service in late July sent letters to 46 states and Washington, D.C., notifying them of possible delays in the delivery of mail-in ballots, which will result in the not counting of those votes in the November 3 presidential election. The letter warned that “certain deadlines for requesting and casting mail-in ballots are incongruous with the Postal Service’s delivery standards”.

Tokyo, Sep 17 (AP): Japan’s new Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga started his first full day in office Thursday with a resolve to push forward popular reforms. “I’m determined to work hard for the people and get results so we can live up to their expectations,” Suga told reporters as he walked into the prime minister’s office. Suga was formally elected Wednesday to replace Shinzo Abe, who announced last month that he planned to step down due to ill health. While Suga won the backing of fellow ruling party lawmakers with a pledge to carry on Abe’s policies and work on Abe’s unfinished goals, he is also pushing for some policy changes of his own. In a departure from Abe, Suga said he will discontinue cherry blossomviewing parties. Abe was accused of using taxpayers’ money to entertain constituents at the annual gathering. Suga told reporters Thursday that there will be no longer a budget for such events. Suga did not say if he planned to investigate if cherry blossom party funds were properly handled in the past. He also pledged to speed up Japan’s lagging digital transformation and appointed a special minister to promote digitalization in education, healthcare and businesses. Suga has also campaigned to lower cellphone fees and said he will seek further cost reductions. U n l i k e A b e, w h o floated grand goals such as

US Undersecretary of State Keith Krach is to meet Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and other senior officials, the island’s foreign ministry said on Thursday. Krach, who holds the portfolio for economic growth, energy and the environment, is the highest-level official from the State Department to visit the island in decades. His visit follows a highprofile visit in August by US Health Secretary Alex Azar, who was the highestlevel US Cabinet official to visit since the break in formal ties between the US and Taiwan in 1979, when the US switched relations to Beijing. However, the US has maintained unofficial ties with Taiwan since the official diplomatic break and is the island’s most important ally and provider of defence equipment. Ahead of Krach’s ar-

As per the the Interior Ministry, 907 of the frozen assets belonged to the JuD and 57 to the JeM. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan said that the provincial home departments had taken the action to freeze assets of the JuD and the JeM under the United Nations Security Council (Freezing and Seizure) Order 2019, issued by the Foreign Affairs Ministry. “A total of 611 properties of the JuD were frozen in Punjab, 108 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 80 in Sindh, 61 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (Pakistanoccupied Kashmir), 30 in Balochistan and 17 in the Islamabad Capital Territory,” he told the Senate, the upper house of the Pakistani legislature, about the government’s progress against proscribed outfits. “Eight properties of the JeM were frozen in Punjab, 29 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 12 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, four in the Islamabad Capital Territory, three in Sindh and one in Balochistan,” he added. PSG beat Metz 1-0 in Ligue 1

Players of Paris St Germain and Metz vie for the ball during their Ligue 1 match.

PARIS, Sep 17 (Agencies): Paris St Germain earned their first win of the Ligue 1 season as Julian Draxler headed home deep in stoppage time to give the depleted French champions a 1-0 home win over Metz on Wednesday. PSG’s disciplinary problems continued, however, as they had another player sent off after three were dismissed in Sunday’s ill-tempered defeat by Olympique de Marseille, including world record

signing Neymar. France striker Kylian Mbappe was also out due to testing positive for COVID-19 and Thomas Tuchel’s under-strength side struggled to break down Metz, whose goalkeeper Alexandre Oukidja made a series of saves with his feet to keep out the hosts. PSG were further frustrated by the sending-off of defender Abdou Diallo in the 65th minute for a second yellow card, which

was followed by an injury to full back Juan Bernat that left them with nine men as Tuchel had made three substitutions. B u t P S G, b e a t e n Champions League finalists last month, continued to search for a first goal of the season and finally got one thanks to the determination of Angel di Maria and the opportunism of Draxler. Di Maria trapped a long ball down the left wing and cut inside, pro-

ducing a stinging cross which keeper Oukidja spilled into the air. German Draxler pounced to head into the unguarded net, providing much relief to the home fans who were scattered across the Parc des Princes due to social distancing measures. “We missed so many great chances but the players showed a great mentality and they ran like crazy. We will savour this match for a long time,” Tuchel said. Moments before Draxler’s goal, Metz came agonisingly close to finding an unlikely winning goal when Youssef Maziz broke into the area but side-footed wide of the target. “From the start we knew this was going to be a very difficult match right until the end,” PSG defender Marquinhos said. “We are still recovering and we wanted to break them down long before we did but it was so important to win, especially as we were at home and after losing the first two games.” Having lost their first two matches of the campaign to Lens and Marseille, PSG are 15th in the Ligue 1 standings on three points after three games.

India drop to 109 in latest FIFA rankings Zurich, Sep 17 (IANS): The Indian men’s football team have dropped by one place and are placed at the 109th position in the latest FIFA rankings. India have 1187 points. India, amid the Covid19 pandemic, were ranked 108 from the November 2019 to July 2020 editions. However, there was no release of FIFA rankings in August this year. Meanwhile, Belgium remain at the summit ahead of France and Brazil, who complete the podium, while England continue to occupy fourth place. Portugal (5th,+2) have moved into the top five thanks to victories over Croatia (8th,-2) and Sweden (18th,-1). Other countries moving in the right direction were Spain (7th,+1), Italy (12th,+1), the Netherlands (13th,+1), and Germany (14th,+1), with each gaining one place in the global classification. Wales (21st,+2) climbed two rungs but remain outside the top 20. Russia, hosts of the last FIFA World Cup, are further back in 32nd but had the biggest gain in this edition, ascending six places courtesy of wins over Serbia (31st,-2) and Hungary (52nd, unchanged).

League Cup: Everton cruise ahead

Players of Everton and Salford City vie for the ball during their match.

Lo n d o n, S e p 1 7 (Agencies): Everton hit the woodwork five times on their way to defeating a spirited Salford City to set up a Carabao Cup thirdround visit to League One Fleetwood Town. Michael Keane’s firsthalf header, Gylfi Sigurdsson’s first-time finish and a late Moise Kean penalty secured victory for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Italy forward Kean (twice), Sigurdsson and Anthony Gordon (twice) had efforts that struck the bar or post in the second half as Everton had 32 shots throughout the 90 minutes. Having seen his side open their Premier League

campaign with win at Tottenham, Ancelotti made 10 changes for the visit of League Two Salford. And it was Keane, the only survivor from the side that started in north London, who broke the deadlock after meeting Sigurdsson’s corner, before the Iceland midfielder doubled the lead. Everton, who have invested about £60m to bring in Brazil midfielder Allan, attacking midfielder James Rodriguez and French midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure since the end of last season, lost 18-year-old defender Jarrad Branthwaite to injury in the first half. Portuguese keeper Joao

Virginia, 20, marked his senior debut for the Toffees with a clean sheet, while 19-year-old full-back Niels Nkounkou, signed in the summer from Marseille, also got an outing. Despite the result Salford, who are only in their second season in the English Football League, were not overawed by the occasion and came close to scoring themselves. At 1-0, Richie Towell should have equalised but shot over from about 12 yards. The Toffees wrapped up the tie when Gordon teed up Sigurdsson before Gordon was fouled, Kean slotting home the penalty.

Iron basketball board Australia beat England in 3rd ODI to win series inaugurated at Chetheba

Chetheba Ballers and others during the inauguration of the basketball board. Correspondent

Kohima, Sep 17: An iron basketball board dubbed as the ‘lockdown project’, Nagaland first iron basketball board was inaugurated at Chetheba Town on September 15. The initiative was taken by Chetheba Ballers. In the brief inauguration ceremony, Chetheba Town Baptist Church youth director, Vechutso Nyekha,

who declared the board and tournament open, appealed to the youth to work together for the welfare of the society. Constr uction team member, Zavekho Resu said the ‘lockdown project’ started in the month of July by basketball enthusiast including students and youths from Chetheba. With no budget, the lockdown project was initiated through

crowd funding. Marking the occasion, a basketball tournament was also organised where 11 teams participated including three women teams. Team Huskers was crowned champions after defeating Team Airballers in the final match. In the women’s category, Lady Ballers beat Old Defensive Team in the final match.

Manchester, Sep 17 (IANS): Glenn Maxwell and Alex Carey scored brilliant centuries as Australia won an exciting final ODI by three wickets against England and took the threematch series 2-1 at the Old Trafford. Chasing 303 on Wednesday evening, Australia were almost down and out of the game after losing five wickets for mere 73 runs. However, Maxwell (108) and Carey (106) shared a massive 212-run stand to help the visitors register a three-wicket win. The victory also ended a five-year streak in which England have not lost a home ODI series, with Australia also the last side to beat them, back in September 2015. Earlier asked to bowl, the Aaron-Finch led side started the game in the best possible way, with Mitchell Starc removing Jason Roy and Joe Root with the first two balls of the match. Jonny Bairstow, how-

ever, stood at one end even though England found themselves reeling at 96/4 following the wickets of Eoin Morgan (23) and Jos Buttler (8). Sam Billings, who came in next, shared a 114-run stand with Bairstow and the hosts looked to set up a big target before Billings top-edged a reversesweep shortly after reaching his fifty. Bairstow also fell just a few overs later having faced 126 balls for his 112, the opener’s longest innings in the format. However, just like the second ODI, England’s lower order contributed with crucial runs as Chris Woakes scored an unbeaten 39-ball 53* to boost the hosts to 302/7. Australia didn’t have the best of starts either and they lost Finch (12) and Marcus Stoinis (4) with just 31 runs on the board. The wickets slowed the innings down, and part-timer Joe Root’s introduction after the first Powerplay further slowed down the chase as

Australia’s Adam Zampa (2nd right) celebrates with teammates after taking a wicket during the third ODI match against England at Old Trafford in Manchester, England. (AP/PTI)

he claimed the wickets of David Warner (24) and Mitchell Marsh (2) before Marnus Labuschagne was run out by Billings for 20 to leave the visitors in all sorts of trouble at 73/5. Carey and Maxwell though proved to be their saviours as they both played positively and scored runs quickly to bring Australia back into contention. Maxwell in particular was destructive as he struck seven

sixes in his 108. Just when Australia looked to win, a late surge from England once again threatened to take the game away, as Maxwell and Carey fell in the 48th and 49th overs respectively, leaving Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins needing to take Adil Rashid’s last over for 10. However, Starc scored a six on the first ball of the over and then completed

the chase with a sweep for four with two balls to spare. Maxwell was adjudged the Player of the Match as well as the Player of the Series. Brief scores: England 302/7 (Jonny Bairstow 112, Sam Billings 57; Adam Zampa 3/51) lose to Australia 305/7 (Glenn Maxwell 108, Alex Carey 106; Chris Woakes 2/46) by three wickets.

Rome, Sep 17 (IANS): Top seed Novak Djokovic and defending champion Rafael Nadal reached the third round of the Italian Open after securing respective wins in their secondround matches of the ongoing tournament. Djokovic dispatched Italian wild card entry Salvatore Caruso 6-3, 6-2 to continue with his quest for a fifth Rome title and set up a third-round against countryman Filip Krajinovic. “It was a very good test for me. I’m very pleased with the way I handled myself in important moments,” said Djokovic. “I was in control of the match. I served well when I needed to come up with a big serve and moved well. I constructed the points as the clay courts demand, because it’s obviously com-

pletely different surface in terms of building the point tactically. Everything went well. I’m very pleased.” On the other hand, Nadal made a welcome return to the ATP Tour as he outclassed fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta 6-1, 6-1 in his first tour-level match for 200 days. “It’s good to be back on the Tour,” said Nadal, in an on-court interview. “I miss the crowds. I played a good match, maybe he was a little bit tired after all his matches in New York. It was a perfect start for me. It was solid, (and I hit) good shots on the forehand and backhand. I didn’t expect to play that well.” The Spaniard will next play No. 13 seed Milos Raonic or Dusan Lajovic in the third round.
