Controversy over India’s COVID data
New Delhi, Sep 21 (AGENCIES): In a startling disclosure a recent report suggests that the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)held back data on India’s COVID numbers in May to insist that no community transmission has taken place. A report in The Print which extensive quoted The Telegraph disclosed that India’s Covid numbers for the month of May were off by about 64 lakh, with only around 86,000 cases reported by May 15. However, the ICMR has dismissed reports that it hushed up data from the country’s first nationwide sero survey that found a Covid-19 prevalence of up to 48 per cent in containment zones as early as May. The ICMR’s clarification came after The Telegraph reported that the team behind the sero survey, conducted between May 11 and June 4, was asked by ICMR Director General Dr Balram Bhargava to either hold back the report from public release or remove the data on containment zones. The basis of the report was statements from seven of 74 researchers involved in the survey. The ICMR’s sero

DIMAPUR, SEP 21 (NPN): State-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) slashed diesel prices by 1415 paise across the metros for the fifth consecutive day on Monday even though globally crude prices remained steady. In the national capital, diesel was priced at Rs 71.43 per litre, down from Rs 71.58 on Sunday. After today’s rate revision, diesel price in Dimapur was lowered to Rs.77.34 per litre while in Kohima diesel price was decreased to Rs.78.05 per litre.

survey in question sought to determine Covid exposure by testing random blood samples from 400 people each in 70 districts, and 500 each from 10 cities: Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Kolkata, Delhi, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Mumbai, Pune and Surat. The survey found high prevalence in containment zones in these cities, including, 36 per cent in Dharavi, Mumbai, 48 per cent in
Ahmedabad, and 30 per cent in Kolkata. While releasing the results of the survey in June, Dr Bhargava had said the low prevalence shows that India is not in the stage of community transmission, and spoke to the success of the nationwide lockdown. However, The Telegraph report said, the survey findings finally released only disclosed the lower prevalence in districts, ranging between 0.62 and 1.03 per
cent, and a national prevalence of 0.73 per cent in early May. While the sero survey report was revealed in June, it was peer-reviewed and published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research earlier this month. The alleged withholding of data by ICMR has been questioned by experts. Noted scientist Dr.Anant Bhan, researcher in global health and biotics, in a report in The Telegraph said “Research findings, no matter what they are, need to be disseminated honestly all the time - and absolutely during a pandemic.” According to the report, Dr Bhargava had told the researchers that the council didn’t have the approval to publish data from hotspots or containment zones. In its defence on September 20, the ICMR said that “containment zones, that refer to a specific geographical area where positive cases of coronavirus are found, are dynamic in nature”. “They do not fit into nationally representative sampling,” it added. The ICMR also said the containment zone data was only for informational purposes for states to take effective measures.

8 suspended MPs refuse to leave parliament
NEW DELHI, SEP 21 (PTI): The sit-in protest by eight suspended MPs at Parliament premises that carried on late into the night on Monday showed no signs of ending with senior Opposition leaders coming in hordes to support them including Faroukh Abdullah, Deve Gowda, Jaya Bachchan, Ahmed Patel and Praful Patel. One of the suspended MPs told PTI as they sang patriotic songs, surrounded by placards hanging on strings with slogans in support of farmers. One of the main concerns for the MPs was the health of two senior leaders who are diabetic -- Congress’ Ripun Boren and CPIM’s Elamaram Kareem, who are both over 65 years of age. “We are making sure that we are all hydrated and we have enough water,” TMC MP Derek O’brien said. An ambulance is also on standby for emergency use in case any of the protestors fall ill. The protesting MPs are carrying not just their beddings with pillows and blankets but mosquito repellents as well to shield themselves from the vectors.
Dimapur CSOs back demand to Farmers bills: BJP supports, Cong opposes rollback COVID cess on petroleum Correspondent
DIMAPUR, SEP 21 (NPN): Naga Women Hoho Dimapur (NWHD), Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF) and GBs’ (Sadar) Union Dimapur under the banner of Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) have announced their support to the ultimatum served by Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) to the State government to revoke COVID cess from petrol and diesel. In a joint press statement, NCD vice-president Etsungmomo Kikon, NCD general secretary Thsapongkyu Sangtam, NWHD president Sungsabeni Jamio, DUCCF president Tsenthungo Nyamo and GB’s (Sadar) Union Dimapur president MY Ngullie demanded immediate rollback of the cess. They alleged that the cess on petrol and diesel by
the State government had increased prices of every item across the State, affecting everyone, especially the common people. Despite the appeals and demands from various civil society groups and students bodies to rollback the COVID cess on petrol and diesel, the leaders regretted that the State government had remained adamant and still persisting with collecting the cess, which was nothing short of adding salt to the injury of the entire general public who are already reeling under the COVID-19 pandemic. NWHD, DUCCF and GBs’ (Sadar) Union Dimapur therefore urged the government to immediately rollback the cess and warned of no longer tolerating this and remain a mute spectator. Western Sümi Hoho
(WSH) has also announced its support to the demand made by various organisations seeking withdrawal of COVID cess from fuel imposed by the State government. Mentioning that COVID-19 pandemic has affected normal lives of common people and brought countless sufferings on every front, the hoho however regretted that the government, instead of trying to lessen the burden of the people, brought them more hardship and thus left them with no option but to come out and agitate. WSH said it would give full support to the demand for withdrawal of the cess. It may be mentioned that the state government decided to impose COVID19 cess on petrol and diesel with effect from midnight of April 28, 2020.
KOHIMA, SEP 21 (NPN): While the Centre has been facing strong criticism from the opposition parties over the three farms bills, the BJP Nagaland state unit president and minister, Temjen Imna Along, Monday accused the opposition parties of spreading propaganda and lies about the bills and affirmed that the BJP Nagaland endorsed the bills in toto. On the other hand, NPCC president K.Therie has opposed the bills saying they were taking the nation towards capitalism. Addressing a press conference at his official residence here Monday, state BJP president and minister H & Tech Education and Tribal Affairs Temjen Imna Along maintained that the central government led by the Prime Minister has ensured that the three bills empowered the farmers and provide them protection.
Temjen Imna Along (NP)
Along said earlier mandis used to buy the farmers produce leading to delay in payment and uncertainty in prices. However, with the passage of the bills, that ministry of agriculture would fix the prices beforehand so the farmers could decide whether they would sell their produce at the mandis or outside the mandis where they get better price. He reiterated that farmers rights and their lands were ensured as no form of agreement with any of the private sector would be al-
lowed towards the land but only on the crops. He said that in case of any dispute, the settlement would be resolved at local level within 30 days. He said any agreement done with the sponsor of the crops cannot be a failure since, in case sponsor defaults on payment, then a penalty of 150% of the amount due can be imposed on the sponsor and would be payable to the farmer over and above the original due amount. He also said the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) was doing well and has not been removed from the bill. Along said farmers are given the opportunity to sell beyond the mandis so their products could be sold not only in the state but intra-state or beyond the country. Maintaining that Nagaland can envision producing cash crops and also get market connectivity, he
said farmers needed to be educated on the policies and schemes of the government to be paid in a better way. NPCC Opposes: Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K Therie said the party opposes the bills as this would taken the nation towards capitalism. Speaking to Nagaland Post, Therie said that the Bills that were passed even without discussion was unfair. Therie said that the Minimum Support Prices was not withdrawn but also not guaranteed. He said the Bills would enable the corporate houses to exploit the farmers as these would help the corporate houses acquire the agri products. In line with the nationwide protest called by the AICC over passage of the bills, Therie informed that a meeting is to be held on September 22, 2020 with opposition parties to protest against the bills.
Schools continue to remain closed in Dimapur Cyclone damages 22 houses in Mkg Staff Reporters/Correspondent
DIMAPUR/Kohima, SEP 21 (NPN): Even as the government allowed partial reopening of schools for students of Classes 9-12 on a “voluntary basis” from September 21, 2020 as part of Unlock 4, schools in Dimapur, however remained closed on Monday. Schools across the country have been closed since March due to COVID19 pandemic. Classes are conducted online and links to online study material are sent via WhatsApp, emails and SMS. District Education Officer (DEO) Dimapur, R Amongla Jamir, told Nagaland Post that reopening of schools was not compulsory and those willing to open have to follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) or precautionary measures. She said
that schools and colleges deciding to partially reopen should take the consent from the parents/guardian and allow students to attend their classes accordingly. DEO said in Dimapur there were 291 government schools, 223 private schools, three central schools and one tribal welfare schools enrolled as per UDISE+ (data as on September 30, 2019) imparting education to a total of 153862 students. She pointed out that government schools within Dimapur have been conducting month-wise activities in commemoration of 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi for the period from July to October under various themes. Meanwhile, Dimapur Naga Students Union (DNSU), president Sedevilie Angami, told Nagaland Post over phone that as long as institutions follow SOPs
and precautionary measures laid down by the central and state government, the union was not opposed to partial reopening of schools and colleges. DNSU president pointed out that partial reopening of schools and colleges was needed as most businesses and stores have already been opened. He, however, asserted that schools and colleges willing to partially reopen needed to strictly follow guidelines laid out by the government. He said students cannot only rely on online classes as both students and teachers faced inconveniences due to poor internet connectivity. DNSU vice president, Sentimeren Pongen, said that school authorities should take consent from parents before partial reopening of school for guidance and counselling. As per the SOP, students would
not be compelled to visit their school or college mandatorily by the authorities, but only voluntarily. A parent said she would not send her children to school even if the central or state government decided to re-open schools. A similar view was expressed by a student who said government should not be in a hurry to open schools and colleges as it would pose risk on the students. Govt undecided: Meanwhile minister of H& Tech education Temjen Iman Along said the state government has not yet decided on partial reopening of colleges. Speaking on the sidelines of a press conference, Along informed that four colleges were still used as quarantine centres. He said that due to the surge of COVID-19 cases it was difficult to make decisions and risk the lives of the students.

MLA RK Imo, who has been expelled from the Congress for six years for his anti-party activities, also accompanied the chief minister. The two saffron leaders of the state may also bring up the matter of reshuffle in the council of ministers. A source close to the party said that apart from removing two of the four ministers of NPP in the coalition government, the chief minister has been proposing Central lead-
N Biren Singh (File)
ers to replace some of the party’s ministers to induct new faces. The chief minister is likely to meet Amit Shah to discuss his proposal of offering a party ticket to the ex-MLAs and reshuffling his council of ministers. Regarding the dropping of two NPP ministers, the chief minister may take advantage of NPP’s recent announcement regarding fielding of party candidates in the upcoming by-elections, the source hinted. During his recent visit in the state, NPP national president who is also chief minister of Meghalaya Conrad K Sangma announced
that the party was actively discussing fielding party candidates in the by-elections. Naga People’s Front (NPF) also announced that the party will send out candidates in the byelections. Both NPP and NPF, who are part of the BJP led coalition government, however, has asserted that there were no formal talks with the BJP regarding seat sharing or fielding common candidates. The State Assembly had notified 13 out of 60 seats vacant after four MLAs were disqualified and nine (three BJP and six Congress) resigned. Election Commission of India (ECI) had recently declared five seats “clear vacant” due for by-elections. Sources said that election related cases were pending for the remaining eight seats. Political parties and intending candidates have already kick-started their campaigns for the by-elec-
tions amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Around a week ago, chief minister N Biren Singh had launched the party’s election campaign in Wangjing-Tentha Assembly Constituency in Thoubal district where Paonam Brojen, one of the resigned Congress MLAs is hoping to contest the by-election on BJP tickets. The NPP had also launched its campaign during the recent visit of its national president Conrad K Sangma in Imphal. NPF has also announced fielding party candidates in one of the Assembly Constituencies in Tamenglong district which is lying vacant after Congress MLA resigned. The ECI had already hinted that the by-elections to 56 Assembly Constituencies across the country including five in Manipur will be held around the same time with Bihar Assembly elections which would be held before the last week of November 2020.

Correspondent Shillong, Sep 21: The Joint Action Committee of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) comprising associations and unions of three stakeholders of teachers, students and nonteaching employees has appealed to President Ram Nath Kovind not to give even a single day extension to outgoing incumbent ViceChancellor on the grounds that Prof. S.K.Srivastava failed in all respects and thereby the University has been “brought down to the lowest level in all ranking assessments”. Since Prof Srivastava is an applicant for the second term, any extension given to him would allow him to exert undue influence on the selection process of the new Vice-Chancellor which is already under process, said the JAC. “In such a case of extending him, being an applicant, shall also be immoral and unethical
and unprecedented as in the history of NEHU, no incumbent VC has so far been given an extension,” JAC chairman, Prof. Xavier P. Mao, said. As per NEHU statute 2(A) (2), after the term of office of the incumbent VC is over, the senior most professor normally take over the charge of the office until a new one is appointed, stated the JAC. “Giving extension to Prof. Srivastava even after his non- performance and mismanagement, as raised by way of peaceful protests and demonstrations by teaching, nonteaching and students shall remain incorrect on moral grounds,” the JAC said. “Especially National Women’s Commission, State Women’s Commission are seized with enquiries into cases of harassment against Prof. Sriavstava. National Scheduled Tribes’ Commission too is investigating harassment case by a local indigenous woman profes-
sor against Prof. Srivastava. Even after four years of retirement, a professor filed an FIR with police on non-release of his gratuity and transfer transport allowance. Given all these serious breach of academic collegiality by Prof. Srivastava, any extension of him shall be highly immoral,” Prof. P. Mao iterated. While alleging that Prof. Srivastava’s regime has damaged the University beyond immediate repair, Prof. P. Mao asserted that offering an extended term to the outgoing VC would be direct encouragement of destruction of the sacred temple of learning meant for Meghalaya and Northeastern region. Therefore, the JAC shall not accept any such undue and morally incorrect extension to Prof.S.K.Srivastva and shall continue its peaceful protest to defend the interest of the University and the region, added Prof. P. Mao.

Nagaland Post Vol. XXx NO. 288 Dimapur, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2020
Mockery of democracy
E
ight opposition MPs of the Rajya Sabha were suspended on Monday by the chairman for the remainder of the session for creating unruly scenes in the house during the voting of three controversial farmers’ bills on Sunday. The opposition members had recommended that the controversial farmers bills be referred to a select committee of the house for scrutiny. However, the deputy chairman of the NDA Harivansh Narayan Singh was not interested in prolonging the passage and so the bills were pushed through dubious voice vote. The reason why the government decided to brush aside the demands for division vote was possibly due to fears that even some friendly parties could vote against it. Besides the known opponents, the bill was opposed by BJP’s estranged ally, the Shiromani Akali Dal while friendly parties such as BJD,TRS and AIADMK had also expressed serious concern over the bills and would have likely voted with the opposition if voting took through a division. It is not that voting through voice vote is dubious but has to be conducted fairly. On Sunday, amid the din and noise, the voting was rendered meaningless. In all fairness, the deputy chairman ought to have ensured that the voice vote was repeated or taken a head count if not, asked for division of votes. The demand of the opposition was therefore, not undemocratic though an exercise in futility since the ruling party alliance had the numbers. However, since bills were contentious in all fairness, the government ought to have given democracy if not the opposition an opportunity to air their views. True that the government has majority in the both houses of parliament and feel it has the mandate to carry forward its policies. However in parliamentary democracy, it is not only about majority but the principle of fairness. Every member has the right to be given an opportunity to be heard. The bills were passed through voice vote right after the house resumed business amid the ruckus and tumult. When the deputy chairman rejected pleas for holding, does raise very discomforting questions about Indian democracy. The Opposition has alleged that since many including BJP allies were not going to vote in favour of the bill, the Deputy Speaker Singh was “in a hurry” to pass the bills by a “frivolous” voice vote. The Opposition moved a no-confidence motion against Singh but it was not accepted. But, even if it was, the decision of passing the bills on voice vote would have remained unaffected. Now, can these bills be challenged in a court of law? To answer this, Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh has already said his government will challenge “unconstitutional, undemocratic and anti-farmer” moves by the Centre in the courts. The Bills can be challenged by states under Article 131, which allows for cases between the Centre and States in the Supreme Court of India. The bills may be controversial or contentious and for which the court will take the call. However, what matters is the manner in which parliament has been conducting itself. Be it some controversies involving the speakers or the unruly behaviour of the members. It is not the first time that such incidents have happened inside parliament and it won’t be the last unless the members resolve to behave themselves.
DailyDevotion The Missionary’s Predestined Purpose Now the Lord says, who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant… —Isaiah 49:5 The first thing that happens after we recognize our election by God in Christ Jesus is the destruction of our preconceived ideas, our narrow-minded thinking, and all of our other allegiances— we are turned solely into servants of God’s own purpose. The entire human race was created to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever. Sin has diverted the human race onto another course, but it has not altered God’s purpose to the slightest degree. And when we are born again we are brought into the realization of God’s great purpose for the human race, namely, that He created us for Himself. This realization of our election by God is the most joyful on earth, and we must learn to rely on this tremendous creative purpose of God. The first thing God will do is force the interests of the whole world through the channel of our hearts. The love of God, and even His very nature, is introduced into us. And we see the nature of Almighty God purely focused in John 3:16— “For God so loved the world….” We must continually keep our soul open to the fact of God’s creative purpose, and never confuse or cloud it with our own intentions. If we do, God will have to force our intentions aside no matter how much it may hurt. A missionary is created for the purpose of being God’s servant, one in whom God is glorified. Once we realize that it is through the salvation of Jesus Christ that we are made perfectly fit for the purpose of God, we will understand why Jesus Christ is so strict and relentless in His demands. He demands absolute righteousness from His servants, because He has put into them the very nature of God. Beware lest you forget God’s purpose for your life.

hen Indian elephants meet African elephants, they recognise that they are both elephants. So do Indian tigers meeting Siberian ones. But I have great difficulty recognising that I am of the same species as a person who attends a Wildfoods festival in New Zealand to drink shots of bull and horse semen taken fresh from animals that have had humans masturbate these animals. I suppose that if you eat meat it makes very little difference whether you eat the head, the shoulders or the anus. But there seems something so savagely primitive and ugly about people celebrating at testicle “festivals” held across America in which the testicles of turkey, pigs, bulls and lambs are fried and served. In the Middle East grilled testicles are served to honoured guests (along with eyes). In New Zealand they go one better : the young lambs on a farm are routinely castrated to make them fatter and their testicles are cooked and eaten for lunch at the farm in front of the animals. Rocky Mountain oysters or prairie
oysters are the name for the Canadian/ American delicacy made from bulls’ testicles. They are known as huevos de toro (bulls’ eggs) in Latin America and Spain, “ox treasures” in China, and in Greece you call them “unmentionables”. In Scotland they eat the testicles of deer. In Syria baidghanam or sheep testicles are grilled in lemon juice and garnished in parsley. Bull fries, are floured and breaded testicles prepared from the animals killed during bullfighting. Spaniards consider that eating the testicles of prized bulls is a great way to show their bravery and masculinity. Bulls testicles, pink with red veins running through them, called “Ngǻupín” in Vietnamese (which means electric battery) are common in supermarkets all over the world. Most of these testicles are from young animals whose private parts are simply sliced off without anesthesia while they live in pain for another few months/ years till they are killed. Another great favourite is penises. Bull penis cooked with bananas is a traditional dish in Jamaica and is considered an aphrodisiac. China
Nagaland Post, Dimapur TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2020
What horrible species we are and Korea eat them too to increase their own manliness. Chinese at the 2008 Summer Olympics munched on deer penises all the time. It reminds me of certain tribes in Africa who several hundred years ago used to eat parts of Christian missionaries in order to imbibe their “goodness”. There is no medical evidence that eating penises has any health benefit but they are frozen, dried and sold as Pizzles in the United States and eaten in diets that promote low cholesterol and high protein, minerals and hormones. In China, the country that gave the world the Corona virus because of its filthy eating habits, there are restaurants are specialise in animal penises and testicles.
A restaurant called Guolizzhuang, started in 1956 states that eating the penis from the head goat of a Mongolian herd will make women more beautiful and men more vigorous. It advertises the genitals of “horses, oxen, chicken, donkeys, dogs, deer, goats, sheep, and snakes.” The dishes are given poetic names such as “The Essence of the Golden Buddha,” “Phoenix Rising,” “Jasmine Flowers with 1,000 Layers,” “Look for the Treasure in the Desert Sand,” “Head crowned with a Jade Bracelet,” and “Dragon in the Flame of Desire.” The restaurant also sells stewed deer faeces, sheep foetus and peacock claws. They sell a hotpot of all these different male genitalia in one dish in order to boost the human
libido. After all what could be more energizing for a small thin Asian “man” than to eat the penises of every other animal? If you need to celebrate your great manhood, you can eat tiger penises soaked in water with herbs. It is officially banned in China along with Rhino horns but served openly. Seal penises are eaten in Canada and the Fur Institute of Canada in 2015 announced they were going to kill 1,40,000 grey seals to boost the seal penis market. These penises are also dried and sold as sexual enhancement products. They sell a beverage called Dalishen Oral Liquid to Asians, made from seal penis and testicles. Cow and pig uteruses are grilled and eaten in Vietnam by pregnant women and by everyone else in Japan. The Pig Uterus Dish is called Ringeru. In Taiwan pregnant women eat deer penises which are kept and fermented in large jars. Chicken ovaries are yellow and full of veins and make excellent chewsticks for snacking on in front of the TV. If you can eat the private parts of animals, you can drink them as well. In Iceland they
sell a beer called Hvalur made from smoking whale testicles with sheep dung. Fin whales are an endangered species and it is illegal to kill them. But testicle dungbeer is evidently more essential to the wellbeing of these humans. A beer is made from Bull testicles in the US as well. Sex Organ soup is popular in Hong Kong made from testicles, scrotum, penis and labia. Dick Soups (bull penises) are common in Malaysia. What a horrible species we are. Even researching and writing this piece has made me feel sick and disheartened about the future of our planet. But for a meat eater it is not such a difficult thing to imagine. After all, if you eat the other parts of a slaughtered animal, its genitalia is no big deal. And from animals the next step would be humans. On the Net there is someone who has eaten human testicles. This what he says about the taste “The testicles were hard on the outside and soft and glutinous in the middle, with a fishy or gamey taste.” To join the animal welfare movement contact gandhim@nic. in, www.peopleforanimalsindia.org
Post-mortem
COVID-19 decimated the dignity of the dead and living
H
umans, by and large, have the tendency to take care of their bodies well and keep them fit. For humans, the body-framesare the ones that instantaneouslycapturesthe attention and thus forms opinion. This is why everyone irrespective of gender want to nurture their bodies well by protecting and keeping each and every part of the body fit. Take for example, gladiators, soldiers, commandos, models, security and law enforcement personnel their very body structure poses fit, but often frightening. And yet, body-building is going on vigorously. Take for instance, the big and small parts of human body and its functions. They are unique, delicate and complex performing its function within aintricate and delicatesystem. Human body is the ultimate and the pinnacle as compared to all others that we developed and invented. Each tissue, nerve, blood vessels, and cells connected to the brain and heart and many parts have their uniqueness and grandeurs that makes the body—a beautiful frame. These parts though autonomous are perfectly integrated and linked with each other in such precision. Human body is the greatest creation and gift from the Creator and the most precious gift for those who are born as human beings. However, diverse views are worth revisiting: Bill Gates, one of the techno-giants and billionaires views that “The human body is the most complex system ever created. The more we learn about it, the more appreciation we have about what a rich system it is”. George Orwell who describes about “Human beings were behaving as human beings and not as cogs in the capitalist machine”—human body as an object of exploitation. Similarly, Mahatma Gandhi opines that “It is beneath human dignity to lose one’s individuality and become a mere cog in the machine.” In the last eight months, COVID-19, has taken human beings entirely to another levels. India is gradually moving to the top spot by touching five million. In two days, it jumped from four million to five million. The United States is on top followed by India. COVID-19 is gaining its momentum and striking the worldharshly with its second wave. It is predicted that the second wave could perhaps bemore severe and massive. Last six month in particular were filled with horrifying images and pathetic stories. We did view and read images and stories that went beyond our imagination and comprehension. Countries right across the world looked like a ghost town—deserted. Main lanes and by-lanes, massive production lines and supply chains were shut; travel and entertainment industries brought to a standstill; polity, economy, education and religious activities, festivities, every big and small human activities came to a naught—a grinding halt—terrifying everyone. Some of the scenes we witnessed in person and through live channels do linger before us and thus vividly present. Dead bodies covered in black plastic bags dumped in trucks and thrown into a 80-plus deep pits in Karnataka and in other places; dead bodies buried in lanes just by a few without name tags; due to the lack of space in the cemeteries hundreds of dead bodies laid in coffins waiting for its turns; dead bodies lying on the railway platforms and in public places showing scant respect; carrying the dead in cycle rickshaws and physically due to non-availability of ambulance services leaves a clear message that human body is taken care so well and once the body or the physical frame loses it life becomes dead obviously loses its sanctity.
COVID-19 has leveraged not only the naked reality of dead, but also those who are living. Those who have been tested positive rushed to the hospitals and the ways with which they have been treated—pushed and kicked from pillar to post shows the inhumanity inflicted upon them. These stories remind me of Steve Jobs who beautifully and realistically articulated that “Death in life must happen in this life if we are truly to live. We have to encounter an event that overturns our agenda our way of being in the …” These are the experiences of many. This is what is happening to those who are living with coronavirus fearing to go to hospital and also not disclosing due to social stigma. We have come across incidents wherein groups opposing burial of their own faithful with dignity. They refused dead bodies to be buried in the cemeteries who died of coronavirus. So, they had to take the dead ones to different places for burial. There were cases that those belonging to other faith offered burial in their burial grounds for Christians. There are those while livingcontinue to face death in life.COVID-19 has pushed many to encounter such situations. There have been many harrowing incidents. However, there are those defied wearing face masks and social distancing haveembraced death, out of their choice, but manydue their vulnerability have been facing death while living.COVID-19 has further unfolded the pandora box of life and death. The bodies humans adore and respect while alive contradicts the life humans dream to live. Accordingly, they care of theirbodies with dignity and believe that their dead bodies either to be buried or cremated in dignified manner, but coronavirus has subverted and crushed thehuman desires. We live totally in fluidity that prompts us to go deep into human nature. Steve Jobs sheds more light to our settings that “No one want to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has even escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out of the old to make way for the new.”Coronavirus has pushed the entire humanity both global and local to another level. At this juncture, we are mandated to think and ponder over about the Life and Death of the present and future of humanity. COVID-19 is now the life changing catalyst/agent. It has furthered us to shed out the old and to embrace or pave ways for the new levels of thinking and acting. COVID-19 a global pandemic is a life-changer because death is the destination, we all share, but when and how are the questions that looms at large. Coronavirus has pushed us to deeper levels in our thought processes and actions and thus prompted us to go beyond conventional conceptions and frameworks. India will have to swim against the tide
G
oing by the flurry of revisions in forecasts since the National Statistical Office (NSO) announced that gross domestic product (GDP) in the April-June period had shrunk by 24 per cent, a much deeper hit to Indian economy this fiscal appears certain now. We, for one, have revised our real GDP growth forecast for India this fiscal to (-) 9 per cent from (-) 5 per cent projected earlier in May. This revision, however, is not premised on first quarter data — our projection at (-) 25 per cent was anyway close to NSO’s estimate — as much as on the unfettered spread of the COVID-19 infections and the inadequate fiscal stimulus convulsing the economy. Besides, unless inflation climbs down below 6 per cent, the Reserve Bank of India would be constrained from cutting rates. As things stand, till the time a vaccine is found and mass distributed, forecasting the economic environment, and as a consequence, decision-making, will be dominated by what John Kay and Mervin King, in their recent book, refer to as “radical uncertainty” — a situation in which we know something but not enough to act with confidence. And that too when the stakes are high. If the experience of the last few months is any guide, it will indeed be a very complicated transition to what we regard as normal. High-frequency economic indicators till August-end show a recovery vis-à-vis the first quarter. But they remain in contractionary phase, indicating that the economic contraction will continue in the second quarter, though not as severe. We expect the economy to contract by 12 per cent in the second quarter. If the pandemic were to peak out by October, GDP growth could move into mildly positive territory towards the end of this fiscal. As was the case in the deep downturns in the past, 2021-22 could see a sharp mechanical lift from the deep trough this fiscal. Milton Friedman’s “Plucking Model” could be used to explain if such a recovery does take place next fiscal in the absence of a notable fiscal push. Friedman compares an economy to a string instrument — while recessions pluck the string down, it bounces back thereafter. This has been used to explain the economic recovery in parts of Europe post the global financial crisis (“The ‘Plucking Model’ of reces-
T
sions and recoveries” by Gregory Claeys and Thomas Walsh). Quite in sync, we see India’s growth rebounding to 10 per cent in 2021-22, on a very weak base and with some help from the rising global tide that will lift all boats. The key assumption here is the availability of vaccine in early 2021, in the absence of which, all bets are off. Even so, real GDP will merely catch up to the 2019-20 level in 2021-22. The economy will suffer a permanent loss of 13 per cent of GDP which works out to Rs 30 lakh crore in nominal terms. So a sharp recovery in 2021-22 can be highly misleading. The manufacturing sector is likely to recover faster than services with face-to-face contact (tourism, hospitality, and sports), which continue to be restrained by regulatory restrictions and a likely persistence of risk-averse behaviour of consumers till a vaccine is mass distributed. Countries such as China, which have already emerged from the pandemic, bear this out — demand for such services there is tepid even after opening up. This is also reflected in India’s manufacturing PMI rising faster than services in August. The rural economy, representing almost half of the Indian economy, appears to have held up somewhat better than its urban counterpart largely because of normal agricultural performance and the rural tilt of government’s support. This shows up in demand for products with rural footprints such as tractors, motorcycles and fast moving consumer goods. But rural wages remain depressed and remittances are likely to have been hit due to reverse-migration. Moreover, the pandemic’s rapid spread to rural areas can challenge the rural story. The critical question now is what happens to medium-term growth prospects after the next fiscal. Data till the 1990s shows that in most instances, growth in India has rebounded, and that the medium-term average growth has not gone majorly off-track even after a deep hit to the economy. During the global financial crisis, however, medium-term growth did slip to 6.7 per cent per year from 7.9 per cent in the preceding five years. But, world GDP growth also slowed by a similar magnitude to 3.7 per cent from the pre-crisis rate of 4.9 per cent. The pre-crisis phase was an indeed an abnormal one for the world economy and the excessive
leverage-driven fillip to growth could not be sustained with many economies expanding at half the pace post the crisis. The current crisis, however, has no parallel and brings with it massive uncertainty and lingering behavioural shifts not experienced in independent India. India is facing this crisis on a weak wicket, with growth slowing, investments falling, and a stressed financial sector — it has been hit the hardest among its contemporary. The manufacturing sector has been in recession since the second quarter of the last fiscal, long before the pandemic struck. Consequently, the share of manufacturing in gross value added fell from 18.1 per cent 2018-19 to 17.4 per cent in 2019-20. Given that investments are likely to take a substantial hit, with the government’s ability and the private sector’s willingness and ability to invest impaired, medium-term growth potential is likely to trend lower in the base case scenario. That said, India’s medium-term growth trajectory will be largely influenced by domestic factors as the global environment will be less favourable. The received wisdom is that in the post-pandemic world order, relentless pursuit of efficiency will take a back seat as other considerations such as resilience and reliability take precedence. And this, along with the accelerating trend of de-globalisation, could reduce reliance on supply chains in the current form. For developing countries such as India, the hit to global supply chains may limit the opportunity of industrialising through this route. India will have to swim against the tide to capture the shrinking pie of global trade. This requires fast-tracking reforms to improve the investment climate and attract investments, relocating away from China. Policymakers will need to take more steps to address the current pain by raising spending to support vulnerable households and small businesses and services that have been debilitated by the pandemic. This will strengthen the recovery process and may also help contain the damage to the productive capacity of the economy. Together with accelerated efficiency enhancing reforms, this can create conditions for a sustainable push to growth over the medium run. Fingers crossed. Dharmakirti Joshi

Frequent power cuts in Dimapur
Sir,
Of late, Dimapur has been witnessing a lot of power cuts in many localities. The weather in the city has been insufferable and to make things worse, the electricity has been going on and off every now and then. The department should look into this immediately as not many people own generators and inverters. Sama Nochet, Industrial Colony, Dimapur

Farm bills need of 21st century: PM
Narendra Modi (PTI)
of rules regulating the sale of their produce and stated that this needed to change, which his government has done. “After these historical changes in the agricultural sector, some people are losing their control of it. So now these people are trying to mislead farmers on MSP (minimum support price). They are the same people who sat for years on the recommendations of the Swaminathan committee on MSP,” Modi said, in an apparent swipe at the Congress. Describing the legislations as “very historic”,
the prime minister said if somebody says that government-regulated agriculture markets will be finished after these reforms, then he is “blatantly lying”. Noting that his government had brought the farm ordinances, which these legislations will replace, in June, he said farmers are already getting a better price for their produce in several states. Modi made the comments at a virtual ceremony to lay foundation stones of nine highway projects in Bihar and to inaugurate optical fibre internet services
Opposition parties urge prez not to sign farm bills
NEW DELHI, SEP 21 (AGENCIES): A huge gathering of the Islamic sect Tablighi Jamaat in March in Delhi, despite orders issued by various authorities after the outbreak of coronavirus, “also” led to the spread of the virus among “many persons”, the government today informed parliament. “As reported by Delhi Police, despite guidelines/ orders issued by various authorities in pursuance of the outbreak of COVID-19 a huge gathering assembled inside a closed premise; over a protracted period of time, without any semblance of social distancing or provision of masks and sanitizers. This also caused spread of Corona Virus infection amongst many persons (sic),” Minister of State (Home Affairs) G Kishan Reddy informed the Rajya Sabha in his written response to a question on whether the gathering was a “major reason” for the spread of coronavirus in Delhi and other states. Hundreds of people both foreigners and locals - were tested positive for coronavirus after they had either attended the religious gathering organised by Tablighi Jamaat at a mosque in Delhi’s Nizamuddin locality in March or had come in contact with the followers of the sect. The Home Ministry was responding to a question from Shiv Sena MP Anil Desai who asked the ministry to specify whether the spread of coronavirus in Delhi and other states was due to the assembly of people for the gathering. The Sena MP also sought details of the number of people who attended the gathering and the number of people arrested so far. The Home Ministry said that as many 2,361 persons of Tablighi Jamaat were evacuated by Delhi Police on March 29.
his microphone and heckled him over their demand for a division of vote on their motion to refer the legislation to a select committee. Sources said the opposition parties have described the manner in which the bills were passed in Rajya Sabha on Sunday as “murder of democracy” by the ruling BJP. They have also sought time from the President for a meeting, likely on Tuesday. The Shiromani Akali Dal leadership will meet President Ram Nath Kovind separately on Monday to urge him not to sign on the bills. Sources said the

THANE, SEP 21 (PTI): Thirteen persons, including seven children, died and 20 others, including a four-yearold boy, were rescued after a three-storeyed building collapsed in Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi town on Monday, police said. The 43-year-old Jhilani building caved in at 3.40 am, police said, adding a two-year-old boy is among the dead. Two civic officials have been suspended in connection with the collapse and an offence has been registered against the building owner, an official said. Personnel of the Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF) pulled out the fouryear-old boy, Ubed Quraishi, from the debris and fed him water. The building at Bhiwandi, a powerloom town around 10 km from Thane, had 40 flats and around 150 persons lived there, an official said. A civic official told PTI that the building,
located at Narpoli’s Patel Compound near Dhamankar Naka, collapsed while the residents were asleep. Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are at the spot. NDRF DG S N Pradhan said they used a canine squad to search persons trapped in the debris. A portion of the building collapsed and many occupants were trapped in the debris, a Thane Municipal Corporation official said. The building was not in the list of dilapidated structures of the BhiwandiNizampur Municipal Corporation (BNMC), he said. An eyewitness said local residents rushed to the spot immediately after the collapse and helped pull out some persons from the debris. The power supply to the locality was snapped as a precautionary measure, the official said, adding the injured have been admitted
to local hospitals. Bhiwandi DCP Rajkumar Shinde said offences under sections 337,338,304 (2)of the IPC were registered against the owner of building Sayyed Ahmed Jilani following a complaint by the civic officials after the collapse. The police officer ruled out any possibility of finding more people/bodies in the debris. Thane guardian minister Eknath Shinde said the collapse would be probed. He visited the site and announced a compensation of Rs five lakh to the kin of each victim. He said 102 “dangerous buildings” in the powerloom town have already been evacuated. The BNMC has suspended two senior officials in connection withthe building collapse. An official release said the then Assistant Municipal Commissioner Sudam Jadhav and an engineer and Verification Officer Dudhnath Yadav have been suspended.

NEW DELHI, SEP 21 (PTI): A day after two contentious farm bills were passed by Rajya Sabha amid a bedlam, a number of nonNDA parties wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind over the manner in which the government “pushed through its agenda” and urged him not to grant his assent to the proposed legislations. NEW DELHI, SEP 21 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted on Monday that the farm sector reform bills passed by Parliament were the need of 21st century India and again reassured farmers that the government purchase of their produce coupled with the minimum support price mechanism will continue. With opposition parties vehemently criticising the legislations as “antifarmers” and protests continuing in states like Punjab and Haryana, Modi again mounted a strong defence of these measures, saying farmers will now have the freedom to sell their produce at a place and price of their choice. Attacking critics, he said a “clique” of people exploited farmers for long as they remained in shackles
MSP and the purchase of farm produce, he said their quantity in the last five years and the five years before 2014, when he first came to power, are a testimony to this. “If I talk about pulses and oilseeds, then government procurement of pulses and oilseeds has been increased almost 24 times more than before,” he said. Two key farm bills, dubbed as the biggest reform in agriculture by the government, were on Sunday passed by Rajya Sabha with voice vote. The two bills were earlier cleared by Lok Sabha. Modi likened the proposed changes in the farm sector to dairy business, saying as dairies help people rearing cattle to sell milk and take care of their interests, similar changes will happen in agriculture. Noting that a majority of farmers have small landholdings, he said the changes will help them organise and get a better price of their produce.

through which all 45,945 villages in the state will be connected. Seeking to dispel concerns among a section of farmers, he said he wanted to make it clear that the bills are not against agriculture ‘mandis’ (agricultural markets) and they will continue like they always have. No government has done as much to boost MSP and government procurement of farmers’ produce than his dispensation, the prime minister said. During the coronavirus pandemic, a record purchase of wheat was made from farmers during the Rabi season, he said, adding that farmers were paid Rs 1.13 lakh crore at MSP for wheat, paddy, pulses and oilseeds. The money is 30 per cent more than the last year, Modi said, asserting that the government lifted a record amount of grains amid the pandemic and also made a record payment to farmers. Highlighting his government’s efforts to boost

The NIA sleuths on Sunday night conducted a raid at the house of Abu Sufiyan, one of the six arrested from Murshidabad, and questioned his family members, the officer said. They seized electrical circuits and other devices from a concrete-bunker found inside Sufiyan’s residence, he added. The NIA had on Saturday arrested nine terrorists associated with a Pakistansponsored module of alQaeda, the transnational terror outfit, after conducting simultaneous raids at several locations in Kerala and West Bengal.

Akademi (IGRUA), located in Amethi, its officials confirmed. The deceased pilot has been identified as Konkark Saran. He was a resident of Palwal in Haryana, a spokesperson for IGRUA said. “Saran had 125 hours of flying experience as a trainee, including over 52 hours solo. He was a skilled trainee pilot with a very good track record. Prima facie his aircraft got caught in the dense CB (cumulonimbus) clouds, which led to the incident,” the spokesperson told PTI. “He was flying a fourseater SOCATA TB 20 aircraft with fully equipped avionics and related instruments. The incident is most unfortunate and all due procedures are being carried out,” the official added.
Saturday. “The two are now on the run and a search for them has started,” the official told PTI on Monday. According to the NIA sources out of the six arrested, two are students having close links to some persons in Kashmir. A few SIM cards which were seized from their possession, the laptop and the mobile phones used by these two students, revealed their link to “unknown” persons in Kashmir. “One of the two is a second year undergraduate student of computer science at Basantapur Engineering College in Domkal, while another is a first year student in a college in Karimpur. The laptop and the mobile phones which these two were using showed several contacts in Kashmir, Kerala and other states. They were using several SIM cards.

The Navy deploys women staffers in logistics and medical wings on-board fleet tankers, but it will be for the first time they will be onboard destroyers and frigates. Last year, the Navy had appointed two women as pilots for its Dornier aircraft fleet. The crew of P-8I maritime patrol aircraft of the Navy too has women officers. KOCHI/NEW DELHI, SEP 21 (PTI): In a historic first aimed at ensuring gender parity, the Indian Navy has selected two women officers as helicopter crew for deployment on frontline warships on short and longduration missions, officials said on Monday. Sub Lieutenant Kumudini Tyagi and Sub Lieutenant Riti Singh have graduated as “Observers” (airborne tacticians) in the helicopter stream and would be deployed on warships as part of the crew, they said. The Indian Navy is yet to deploy women officers on board warships unlike navies from countries like the US, the UK, Australia, Germany and France. “In yet another first in the history of Indian naval aviation, two women officers have been selected to join as ‘observers’ in the helicopter stream. They would in effect be the first set of women airborne combatants who would be operating from warships,” the Indian Navy said in a statement. As observers, the two officers will be part of the teams managing various combat and tactical aspects of the operations of naval helicopters from frontline warships when the choppers are deployed on a range of missions. It is for the first time that a senior official from the MEA was part of the high-level military talks aimed at defusing the volatile situation in the mountainous region. Maj Gen Liu Lin, the commander of the South Xinjiang military region, is slated to lead the Chinese delegation. “The meeting is underway,” said a source. The gover nment sources said the agenda for the Monday talks was to chart a specific time-
arrangements to maintain the current level of troops and weapons in all forward areas in eastern Ladakh and other sensitive highaltitude sectors in the harsh winter months when the temperature drops up to minus 25 degree Celsius. They said the situation remained tense at both the southern and northern bank of the Pangong lake area as well as in other friction points. There have been at least three attempts by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army(PLA) to “intimidate” Indian troops along the northern and southern bank of Pangong lake area in the last three weeks where even shots were fired in the air for the first time at the LAC in 45 years. The situation in eastern Ladakh deteriorated after China unsuccessfully attempted to occupy Indian territory in the southern bank of Pangong Lake on the intervening night of August 29 and 30.

In an obvious reference to the powerful Pakistan Army, the resolution expressed “extreme concern” over the increasing interference of the establishment in the internal affairs of the country and regarded it as a “danger to the nation’s stability and institutions”. According to the resolution, the protests would start in phases. In the first phase, the Opposition parties will hold joint rallies in all four provinces in October. The second phase will begin in December during which the Opposition will hold huge rallies across the country. Finally, a “decisive”
long march towards Islamabad would start in January next year to oust the government. New Japanese PM holds 1st phone talks with Donald Trump TOKYO, SEP 21 (IANS): Japan’s new Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga held his first phone talks with US President Donald Trump since he took office last week, during which the two leaders agreed to further strengthen the security alliance between the two countries. During the phone call on Sunday night that lasted about 20 minutes, Suga and Trump also discussed the situation in North Korea as well as the response to the coronavirus pandemic, reports Xinhua news agency. Addressing the media after the talks, Suga, who was elected as Japan’s first new leader in nearly eight years in an extraordinary parliamentary session on September 16, said he told the US President that the alliance is the “cornerstone of peace and stability in the region”, The Japan Times reported. Trump was quoted by Suga as saying the alliance should be strengthened even further and that Suga is welcome to call him “24 hours a day”.
Yoshihide Suga and Donald Trump
Earlier in the day, Suga had a phone conversation with his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison, the first head of government he spoke to since his inauguration. After talking with Trump, Suga said he was willing to hold telephone talks with other world leaders, without touching on details. According to the Prime Minister’s office, Suga’s National Security Adviser Shigeru Kitamura will visit Washington next week to meet his counterpart Robert O’Brien. Suga replaced Shinzo Abe to become the 99th Japanese Prime Minister and also the leader of the
ruling Liberal Democratic Party after the latter’s abrupt announcement late last month that he was stepping down due to a recurrent health issue. At the age of 71, Suga will be the oldest Prime Minister to take office since Kiichi Miyazawa in 1991. His premiership will last through the remainder of Abe’s term as LDP leader until September 2021. In the run-up to his inauguration, Suga said he would continue to promote Abe’s policies, including his “Abenomics” of aggressive monetary easing, fiscal stimulus and structural reforms, to breathe life back into the recession-hit Japanese economy.

and constitutional option in and out of parliament, which include moving noconfidence motions and collective resignations from assemblies at an appropriate time,” the resolution stated. The joint resolution, JUI-F chief Rehman said, has also rejected any attempt to introduce a presidential form of government in the country and pledged to strengthen the parliamentary system of the country. Earlier, addressing the multi-party conference through a video link from London, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif said the struggle of the Opposition parties was not against Khan but against those who brought an “inefficient” man to power. The 70-year-old PML-N supremo has been living in London since November last year after the Lahore High Court granted him permission to go abroad for four weeks for treatment. On Friday, PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari talked to him over phone and invited him to virtually attend the conference. Sharif staged a political comeback by criticising
the country’s powerful military establishment for allegedly supporting Khan. “Our struggle is not against Imran Khan. Today, our struggle is against those who installed Imran Khan and who manipulated elections (of 2018) to bring an inefficient man like him into power and thus destroyed the country,” he said. He asked the Pakistan Army to stay away from politics and follow the Constitution and vision of the country’s father ‘Quaid-e-Azam’ Muhammad Ali Jinnah. “If change is not brought, it will bring irreversible loss to this country...We have made this country a joke in our own eyes and internationally as well,” Sharif said. The Pakistan Army has ruled the country for more than half of its 70 plus years of existence and has wielded considerable power in the matters of security and foreign policy. Before Sharif, former president Asif Ali Zardari also addressed the conference through a video-link and criticised the government, which he said was using the tactics to suppress the Opposition.
UNITED NATIONS, SEP 21 (PTI): As the United Nations marks its 75th anniversary amidst the devastating COVID-19 pandemic, Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Monday called for improved world governance, underlining that there is a surplus of multilateral challenges today but a deficit of solutions. Addressing the UN General Assembly ceremony, marking the world body’s 75th anniversary, Guterres said the coronavirus pandemic has laid bare the world’s fragilities. “We can only address them together. Today we have a surplus of multilateral challenges and a deficit of multilateral solutions,” he said. The special commemoration of the landmark 75 years of the world organisation will be largely virtual as world leaders did not travel to New York due to the COVID-19 pandemic raging across the world and that has in over six months infected more than 30 million people and will soon reach a grim milestone of over a million deaths. of Health said in its daily preliminary report. All imported cases had been placed on stay-home notice (SHN) upon their arrival in Singapore, it said, adding that rest of the cases were migrant workers living in dormitories while there was no case from the community. The four imported cases, reported on Sunday, came from the Philippines, Iran and Germany between September 8-15. They have been put under a 14-day SHN. The Sunday’s sole case from the community, a foreigner on work permit, was detected during the rostered routine testing of workers in the construction, marine and process sectors who are staying outside the dormitories, and was picked up even though he was asymptomatic.
nations must confront. To combat these challenges, Guterres said there is a need for more — and more effective — multilateralism “with vision, ambition and impact”. “National sovereignty — a pillar of the United Nations Charter — goes handin-hand with enhanced international cooperation based on common values and shared responsibilities in pursuit of progress for all. No one wants a world government – but we must work together to improve world governance,” he said. Guterres added that in an interconnected world, “we need a networked multilateralism, in which the UN family, international financial institutions, regional organisations, trading blocs and others work together more closely and effectively.” He also stressed on the need for an inclusive multilateralism, drawing on civil society, cities, businesses, local authorities and young people. Guterres told the General Assembly that the UN Secretariat marked the 75th anniversary with a global conversation that reached more than
a million people around the world, with a special focus on the voices of youth. Sharing their fears and hopes for the future, the respondents said international cooperation is vital to deal with today’s challenges, with the pandemic making such solidarity more urgent and underlining the need for improved health systems and basic services for all. Guterres said people are also fearful about the climate crisis, poverty, inequality, corruption and systemic racial and gender discrimination. “ T h e y see the UN as a vehicle to make the world a better place. And they count on us to meet today’s tests. That responsibility lies above all with Member States,” the UN chief said, adding that Member States established the world body and have a duty to “embrace it, nourish it and provide it with the tools to make a difference”. “We owe this to ‘we the peoples’. We owe it to the peacekeepers, diplomats, humanitarian personnel, and others who sacrificed their lives advancing common values,” Guterres said.

SINGAPORE, SEP 21 (PTI): Singapore has developed a robot that carries out nasal swabbing to diagnose COVID-19, in a bid to reduce healthcare workers’ risk of exposure to the deadly coronavirus. Clinicians from the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) and Singapore General Hospital (SGH) have partnered with Biobot Surgical, a firm specialising in medical robotics technology, to develop the SwabBot, Channel News Asia reported. The self-administered robot, that automates the taking of COVID-19 swab tests, will help reduce healthcare workers’ risk of exposure to the coronavirus, it said. The robot helps address the limitations of manual COVID-19 swab tests by reducing the need for trained manpower, standardising the consistency of the swabs taken and “providing greater throughput” of swab tests as the robot does not suffer from fatigue, the three groups said in a statement. The SwabBot is a “selfadministered” robot, meaning patients can activate and terminate the process at will. When a patient is ready,

IPL: RCB beat SRH by 10 runs
Dubai, Sep 21 (PTI): Young opener Devdutt Padikkal starred on debut before Yuvzvendra Chahal produced a crafty spell to set up a 10-run win for Royal Challengers Bangalore in their opening IPL contest against Sunrisers Hyderabad here on Monday. Padikkal (56 off 42, 8 fours) displayed his highly rated talent with a halfcentury before AB de Villiers (51 of 30) provided the much needed final flourish to take RCB to 163 for five after they were sent in to bat. Chasing 164 for a win, SRH were all out for 153 in 19.4 overs. The Sunrisers were on course for a comfortable chase with Jonny Bairstow (61 off 43) looking in ominous touch. Chahal (3/18) removed the Englishman and Vijay Shankar in successive balls in the 16th over to tilt the game decisively in his team’s favour. Bairstow perished in his attempt to hit Chahal out of the park while Shankar had no clue about the perfectly placed googly. That double blow led to a batting collapse, exposing Sunrisers’ inexperienced middle-order. Mitchell Marsh suffering an ankle injury while bowling meant he came at number 10 and could only last a ball. Pacer Navdeep Saini (2/25) and Shivam Dube (2/15) also returned tidy

figures but Umesh Yadav was expensive for RCB yet again, leaking 48 runs in four overs. Earlier, the class and calmness Padikkal showed in his first high-profile game was remarkable, so much so that Australian limited overs captain Aaron Finch (29 off 27) was happy to play second fiddle at the other end. Sunrisers pulled things back in the middle overs following a 90-run opening stand between Padikkal and Finch. De Villiers came up with crucial boundary hits towards the end to take the team score past 160. The 20-year-old Padikkal, possessing a near perfect
balance in the crease, played all around the ground, playing the pull and aerial cover drive with equal confidence. Padikkal got going with three boundaries in an over off left-arm pacer T Natarajan. The left-handed opener brought up his half-century with a slog sweep over the fielder at deep square leg. With the openers looking good, RCB cruised to 86 for no loss in 10 overs. However, both Padikkal and Finch fell off successive balls and that put the brakes on the scoring rate with RCB collecting only 30 runs from the next five overs. Skipper Virat Kohli
departed after scoring 14 off 13, leaving de Villiers to provide the final flourish. The South African star delivered once again, smashing his 200th six for RCB in the process. There was also an injury scare for Australian all-rounder Marsh, who limped off the field with an ankle injury after bowling four balls in his debut game for the Sunrisers. Luis Suarez cuts Barcelona contract: reports BARCELONA, Sep 21 (Agencies): Barcelona striker Luis Suarez has agreed a deal with the club to end his contract and settled on personal terms with Atletico Madrid, according to reports in Spain on Monday. The Catalans’ third top scorer of all time was told he was not wanted by new Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman and has been looking for a new club. Suarez, 33, who has one year to run on his Barcelona contract, agreed a deal with the club to cut it short, reports said. Mundo Deportivo said Suarez has fixed a contract with Atletico Madrid for two seasons, although the club will need to lighten their wage bill to accommodate the Uruguayan. Reports in Italy say Juventus are in talks with Atletico to re-sign Spain striker Alvaro Morata. Suarez had been heavily linked with Juventus but coach Andrea Pirlo said it was unlikely he would come to Italy because of the difficulty in obtaining an EU passport. Suarez finished as Barca’s second-highest scorer last season behind captain Lionel Messi and scored 198 goals in 283 games for Barca, after joining in 2014 from Liverpool.

Serie A: Juventus thump Sampdoria
Players of Juventus and Sampdoria vie for the ball during their Serie A match.
TURIN, Sep 21 (Agencies): Andrea Pirlo got his coaching career off to a winning start as his Juventus side began their quest for a 10th successive Serie A title with a 3-0 win over Sampdoria on Sunday. Dejan Kulusevski, signed from Atalanta, scored on his debut in the 13th minute with only his sixth touch of the ball in a Juventus shirt before defender Leonardo Bonucci and Cristiano Ronaldo added two more in the last 15 minutes. Former Milan and Juventus midfielder Pirlo had no senior coaching experience before he was surprisingly chosen to replace Maurizio Sarri in August, and only got his coaching badge last week. His first match pitted him against one of Serie
A’s most experienced and wily characters, 68-year-old Claudio Ranieri. United States midfielder Weston McKennie, signed from Schalke 04, also made his Juventus debut and Gianluca Frabotta made only his second appearance as Pirlo reshuffled the side. Like Sunday’s other Serie A matches, a smattering of fans watched the game after the Italian government authorised up to 1,000 spectators at matches for the first time since March. As expected, Pirlo’s side began with an aggressive high press and the pressure quickly paid off. Ronaldo burst into the Sampdoria area and, although his run was blocked, the ball ran loose to Kulusevski who curled a precise low shot into the far corner.
Ronaldo also smacked his shot against the crossbar and then sidefooted wide following a neat exchange of passes as Juve dominated possession. But, as expected from a Ranieri team, Sampdoria, who spent most of last season in the drop zone, were awkward opponents and it took Juventus until the last 15 minutes to finish them off. Sampdoria failed to clear a corner, McKennie’s effort was saved by Emil Audero, Bonucci snapped up the rebound and celebrated with his familiar gesture that suggests his critics should wash their mouths out. Ten minutes later, Aaron Ramsey released Ronaldo and the Portuguese opened his account for the season by drilling his shot into the far corner.
Halep claims Italian Open title Real Madrid held 0-0 by Sociedad in La Liga opener ROME, Sep 21 (Agencies): Top seed Simona Halep won her first Italian Open title on Monday after defending champion Karolina Pliskova retired while trailing 6-0, 2-1 in Monday’s final. World number two Halep, 28, was competing in her third Rome WTA final, having finished runner-up in 2017 and 2018 on the clay at the Foro Italico. Pliskova, the second seed, was playing with her left thigh bandaged, and required treatment on her lower back and upper leg after the first set which Halep swept in just 20 minutes. The Czech lost her opening service game in the second set, but broke back immediately for 1-1 to claim her first game after half an hour. But she called time in the third game, heading towards Halep to signify the end of the match. Wimbledon champion Halep’s 22nd career

title comes just a week before the start of the French Open which she won in 2018. Halep extended her winning streak this season to 14 consecutive victories. She won the Dubai title in February, before the coronavirus lockdown, coming back to claim vic-
tory in Prague last month having skipped the US Open. Former world number one Pliskova, now ranked four, had been having a successful week on clay after her disappointing second round exit in the US Open where she was the top seed.
SAN SEBASTIAN, Sep 21 (Agencies): Real Madrid had an underwhelming return to La Liga as they could only draw 0-0 away to Real Sociedad on Sunday in the first game of their title defence. The champions looked rusty and particularly toothless up front, barely creating any chances of note in either half as Karim Benzema found little support in Brazilian teenage forwards Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo. Sociedad looked more likely to score in either half, with Sweden forward Alexander Isak forcing Real keeper Thibaut Courtois to save with his feet before flashing a shot narrowly over the bar before halftime. Lively winger Ander Barrenetxea was inches away from breaking the deadlock early in the second period but fired just wide of the far post. footing as he rounded goalkeeper Alex Remiro and later saw a goal-bound shot blocked by a dive from Sociedad defender Aritz Elustondo. Madrid keeper Courtois said he was pleased
with his side’s performance all in all. “We’re happy with how organised we were and how we didn’t allow them many chances but the problem was that we couldn’t score, we strug-
gled to complete our final passes,” he said. “We were looking strong even though it was our first game, we played with a high level of intensity although we found it more difficult in the second
half but in general we can be happy with how our first game has gone.” Real spent their brief close season moving on a number of unwanted players such as Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez, Achraf Hakimi and Sergio Reguilon but the only new additions were returning loanees Martin Odegaard and defender Alvaro Odriozola. Odegaard started against Sociedad, where he had a highly successful spell last season, but Real were unable to properly command the middle of the park without Casemiro, who started on the bench before coming on in the second half. Substitute Marvin, 20, could have had a dream Madrid debut when a chance fell his way after coming on but failed to keep his composure. Sociedad’s David Silva made his first La Liga appearance in a decade when he came on as a substitute in the second half.

26.7 seconds remaining. Jokic’s basket in the lane put Denver up 103-102 with 20.8 seconds left. Alex Caruso missed a three-point shot with 6.9 seconds left but Green got the rebound and took another shot. That
one was blocked and the ball went out of bounds, setting the Lakers up for Davis’ game-winner. Game 3 takes place in the early hours of Wednesday morning. In the third period, the Lakers went up 70-54 after Green’s three-pointer less than four minutes into the quarter, but the Nuggets outscored the Lakers 24-12 the rest of the stanza to pull within 82-78 heading into the final 12 minutes.
