CNCCI, DCCI demand COVID cess rollback DIMAPUR, SEP 22 (NPN): Opposition against COVID cess on fuel are getting louder , even as Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) and Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) have expressed support to various organisation demanding its withdrawal. In a statement, CNCCI chairman Dr Khekugha Muru and general secretary Dr Seyievilie Mor said from day one they had questioned the State government on this and demanded its rollback, warning that the cess during COVID-19 pandemic would affect the already-struggling businesses on a scale incomprehensible and deeply pinch the general public. They said the trade body had even written an advisory letter to chief minister Neiphiu Rio and issued press release. But, considering the grim scenario of the health infrastructure that was in shambles at that time and with State government struggling to provide even basic PPE kits, they said the trade body preferred to wait and watch. However, instead of removing COVID cess, CNCCI said the govern-

ment put up a weigh bridge at Dimapur for outbound vehicles to other districts, limiting the load of transport vehicles. Clarifying that it was not against such a weigh bridge, the trade body said the government should ask itself whether there was any road in Nagaland that befits such a stringent step and suggested implementation of such “fancy theoretical concept” after the roads in the State were made to at least of bare minimum standard. According to CNCCI, due to imposition of the cess and weigh bridge, transportation cost of essential goods had shot up by 35-40% and warned that consequently prices of essential commodities would shoot up abnormally in coming weeks in many parts of the State, including Kohima. On behalf of the business community of Nagaland, CNCCI explained to the government and the public that the business community should not be blamed for the price rise. It appealed to the people to sympathise with the business community and make the government accountable. It also announced its

support to the ultimatum served to the government by civil society organisations (CSOs) seeking rollback of COVID cess from petroleum products. Meanwhile, DCCI in a press release announced its full support to the ultimatum served to the government by CSOs seeking withdrawal of COVID cess from petroleum products. The release reminded the government that CNCCI, along with DCCI and Nagaland Petroleum Dealers’ Association, were the first bodies to advice the government that extra cess on petroleum products would result in negative business environment and cause social unrest. Stating that the government should realise that the unpopular cess on petroleum products had impacted negatively both the business community and public alike, DCCI urged the government to rebuild the State’s economy amid the COVID crises, rather than be a stumbling block. It appealed to the government to immediately rollback the cess to avoid the impending crisis as the entire civil society and public were against the unpopular cess.

second national serosurvey had a national representative to estimate the burden, and the sampling was done for that. “The part that was not included in the publication was (on) the containment zones which are very dynamic. They change from day to day and week to week. “Also a very small sample size was done in the containment zones and the purpose of that was served by igniting the spirit of serosurveys in those larger cities and that was the purpose of doing these in the containment zones and that was effectively done,” he said. He cited the example of Delhi where three serosurveys were carried out in June, July and August end with results of 22 per cent, 27 per cent and 33 per cent, respectively. “So that was the purpose and once you estimate the statistical size, this will not be accepted in a publication if you add a little bit of data from a containment zone in that paper,” he said. ICMR had tweeted on Sunday it has been continuously communicating with the respective state authorities and the findings of the previous

India may have had 8.56 lakh cases in May

Adds Agencies: Earlier , in the second week of September, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) finally published its findings for the India’s first ever national level seroprevalence survey in the Indian Journal of Medical Research. The survey, conducted between May 11 and June 4, included testing blood samples from 28,000 individuals across 80 districts, and tested for immunoglobulin G antibodies using the COVID Kavach ELISA kit. DIMAPUR, SEP 22 (NPN): A total of 60 COVID-19 positive cases were detected on Tuesday—22 in Kohima, 35 in Dimapur, two in Mon and one in Tuensang— pushing the total number of positive cases in the state to 5,604. According to a health bulletin, out of the 5,604 positive cases, the total recoveries so far stood at 4,491, active cases at 1,072 and 10 deaths. As per the severity of

symptoms, 1,042 active cases are asymptomatic, 28 active cases are mild and 2 active cases are moderate. Further, out of the 5,604 positive cases, the distribution across various categories of people include 2,640 cases of Armed Forces/ Police, 1,454 cases of returnees, 1,182 cases of traced contacts and 328 cases of frontline workers. A total 523 persons are presently under Facility Quarantine.

the results of the survey, the ICMR estimated that during the month of May, 0.73 per cent of the population would have been exposed to COVID-19 amounting to a startling 64,68,388 adult infections, with 8.56 lakh of these present in ‘zero caseload districts’ (districts where no cases of the infection were found using tests). When considering that the Health Ministry had reported just 52,592 cases of COVID-19 as of May 7, it appears that experts’ fears of severe undercounting of cases were far from unfounded. What’s more, the survey results also lend credence to the contention that India’s nationwide lockdown had failed to achieve its effect, with the virus continuing to rampage through the country despite businesses being shuttered, inter-state travel suspended, and citizens confined to their homes. Potentially, the most important takeout of the study is that for every person that tested positive via RT-PCR kit in May and was added to the nation’s COVID-19 tally, anywhere between 81.6 to 130.1 people who were also positive, were being missed.

NEW DELHI, SEP 22 (PTI/AGENCIES): Findings from containment zones in 10 hotspot cities were not included in the first national serosurvey study paper published recently as the sample size was very small and the zones are “dynamic and change from day to day and week to week”, ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava said on Tuesday. His remarks come in the backdrop of media reports claiming that health researchers, apparently under instructions from senior ICMR officials, were not allowed to include data from containment zones in 10 hotspot cities in the first national serosurvey study paper published recently in the Indian Journal of Medical Research (IJMR). The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) had on Sunday said that the findings of the previous serosurvey from the dynamic containment zones in ten cities to assess the extent of COVID-19 transmission in those areas have been communicated to the states for further action. At a press briefing on Tuesday, Bhargava, while replying to a query, said the first and

DIMAPUR, SEP 22 (NPN): Western Sümi Hoho (WSH) Tuesday said it “fully supports and endorses” the resolution adopted by Chakhroma Public Organisation (CPO) not to recognise any non-indigenous inhabitant of Nagaland illegally acquiring landed property through sale or purchase under its jurisdiction and to treat such dealings as null and void. WSH through its media cell said it “totally agrees” with CPO that some nonindigenous inhabitant of Nagaland, who were prohibited to acquire or possess any land by way of transfer, exchange, lease agreement or settlement by the Nagaland Land Revenue Regulation (Amendment Act) 1978, had been “illegally acquiring” landed property through sale and purchase in Dimapur district. Stating that such dealings had also been taking place in Western Sumi jurisdiction, WSH said it would thoroughly check and nullify such dealings. Describing CPO’s resolution as “a very wise step” for posterity, the WSH said that it would also not recognise any past or future transfer of land by way of sale or otherwise. Further, WSH affirmed that setting up of any institution in Western Sumi jurisdiction would have to procure NOC from the hoho.

The final phase analysis of the survey is now underway and will offer a comparison with the results of the first survey,” it said in another tweet. To further aid in developing state intervention plans, following ICMR survey, states have also conducted their zone/city-specific surveys, the ICMR said.

DIMAPUR, SEP 22 (NPN): In a shocking incident, a truck driver was shot dead by unidentified miscreant near IMC Hall here in the wee hours of Tuesday. It was reported that the incident probably took place sometime after 3 a.m. and it was recovered by police at around 5 a.m. Speaking to Nagaland Post, the Commissioner of Police (CP) Dimapur, Rothihü Tetsoe, revealed that the victim, identified by his driving licence, was 31year-old Jiten Gogoi from Dhemaji, Assam. Tetseo said the victim was apparently driving the truck (NL 01Q 8316) belonging to Star Cargo transport agency from Guwahati alone and had reached the New Field check gate around 1:46 am after which the incident took place. The truck was partially loaded with items like candles, sanitary wares

NPF agrees with Lokayukta’s observations DIMAPUR, SEP 22 (NPN): NPF has expressed disgust over what it termed as alleged “callous and indifferent attitude” of chief minister Neiphiu Rio towards the order of the state Lokayukta Justice Uma Nath Singh over the complaint against deputy chief minister Y Patton’s reported speech filed by a vice president of NDPP youth wing. Press Bureau, Naga People’s Front, said the Lokayukta in a 31-page order on September 18, had observed that the chief minister “Keeps a veiled contempt for the Rule of Law”, by failing to assist the Lokayukta in a manner befitting his office for reasons best known to him. According to NPF, the Lokayukta in his observation implied that the chief minister has failed to rise above petty local politics and created an impression that the enquiry has been deliberately delayed to suit some political expediency. NPF said the order clearly reflected the poor state of

affairs in the entire government machinery where the “immoral practice of manipulation” of the system to the advantage of the people at the helm of affairs has reached its zenith. It stated that the PDA government had in August this year, sought to remove the Lokayukta from his office through a petition to the Supreme Court, citing impropriety and abuse of power as reasons. In the light of the Lokayukta’s order, NPF said it was convinced that the futile attempt through filing the petition was a pre-emptive effort by the PDA government to oust the Lokayukta from his office before he could make such scathing observations in his judgement on the deputy chief minister’s case. NPF said it concurred with the judgement and observation of Justice Singh, who pointed out the irregularities committed by Rio in particular and the PDA government in general. The opposition also asserted that the order was the

most recent in a series of deplorable episodes that proved that the government was not bothered at all about the welfare of the people and exposed the deep-rooted manipulation and corruption in the government. NPF emphasised that the Lokayukta’s recommendation against advocate general of Nagaland KN Balgopal must be taken seriously because the AG was a constitutional position, not political, and as such whoever holds the post ought to render his services fairly without any excuses. Observing that the opinion and recommendation against the advocate general by the Lokayukta was a poor reflection of the PDA’s image on how it was even misusing this constitutional position, NPF reiterated its demand that since the ruling coalition has failed to fulfil the aspirations of the people it should, hence step down on moral ground to pave the way for an alternative government for the betterment of Naga society.

and animal feeds. Mentioning that a police team discovered the body and took it to hospital, Tetsoe stated that as per preliminary probe, the victim was shot from behind with a .22 pistol. As the incident took place in the wee hours, there was no witness, he added. The CP said investigation was on and further details would be known only after it was over. NCD, CNCCI, DCCI, PAC flay killing: Naga Council Dimapur (NCD), Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI), Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) and Public Action Committee (PAC) Dimapur have condemned the incident. Petrol, diesel prices slashed DIMAPUR, SEP 22 (NPN): State-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) decreased prices of petrol and diesel by 7-15 paise across the metros on Tuesday. According to IOCL website, the rate of petrol in the national capital Delhi was slashed to Rs.81.06 per litre from Rs.81.14 per litre and diesel was cut to Rs.71.28 per litre from Rs.71.43 per litre. After today’s rate revision, petrol price was revised to Rs. 86.39 per litre in Dimapur while in Kohima price of petrol stood at Rs.87.29 per litre. Diesel price in Dimapur was lowered to Rs. 77.20 from Rs.77.34 per litre while in the state capital diesel price was decreased to Rs.77.92 from Rs.78.05 per litre.

incident as “gruesome and shocking”. He demanded that law enforcing bodies leave no stone unturned in arresting the culprit at the earliest and awarded befitting punishment as per law, while also ensuring a peaceful atmosphere to the citizens of Dimapur. NCD also expressed its deepest condolence to the bereaved family members. CNCCI chairman Dr Khekugha Muru and general secretary Dr Seyievilie Mor also expressed shock at the incident and demanded that the law enforcing agencies and Dimapur district administration leave no stone unturned to arrest perpetrators of the crime at the earliest. CNCC said the incident has smeared the long peace which the state was witnessing and reiterated that gun culture and killings would not be allowed to take over “our society again”.

SKK, AKM appeal NPGs to reconcile DIMAPUR, SEP 22 (NPN): Two apex student tribe bodies- All Sumi Students’ Union (SKK) and Ao Students’ Conference (AKM)appealed on NSCN/GPRN(I-M) and seven NNPGs to pave way for reconciliation in the interest of Nagas in general and younger generation in particular. SKK president Hutoshe Kits and AKM president Nungdokyanger in a joint statement informed that this was resolved at the consultative meeting held at the SKK office, Zunheboto on September 21, during discussion on the pertinent issue confronting Naga society. The signatories said both held serious and sincere deliberations on the ongoing Naga political issue between the Naga negotiators and the Government of India for an honourable, acceptable and inclusive solution. They however expressed sadness to note the prevailing situation in society where Naga national workers including Naga civil societies had differences

on many fronts while in pursuit of the main objective towards a permanent solution. Both urged upon the government of India to “genuinely assimilate” the desire and opinion of the general Naga public for attaining a lasting peace to the more than seven decades-old protracted issue, rather than “keeping the people in dilemma with assurances and promises without any breakthrough pragmatically.” Meanwhile, the two bodies reiterated that the current Delimitation initiated by the government of India should be put on hold in view of expected settlement to the Naga political issue. They said both viewed that Delimitation would be a wrong step at the present juncture as it would only have severe impact on Naga solution. They also made it clear , that Naga political solution was the foremost and urgent demand of Nagas and thus the government of India should first settle the Naga issue. K Y M C

Manipur minister interacts with NEP will help create ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’: Modi cancer patients on World Rose Day

Guwahati, Sep 22 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday the New Education Policy (NEP) announced by his government will play a key role in creating a self-reliant India and open up the education sector for facilitating greater global exposure for Indian students. Modi said holistic knowledge, of which science is an integral part, is the answer to all problems. The NEP, he asserted, will establish India as a global education destination. “Students, I firmly believe that the future of a nation is what its youth is today. Your dreams are going to shape the reality of India. That’s why this is the time to be future-ready and future-fit,” he said addressing the 22nd convocation of IIT (Guwahati) through a video conference from the national capital. Modi spoke about the importance of education as a key component for creating an “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) and said the NEP is for the youths of the 21st century who will lead the world and make India the global leader in science and technology. The NEP, which is de-

Narendra Modi signed to ease the burden of classroom teaching and examination on students, will play an important role in the country’s march forward, he said. “We all know that knowledge has no boundaries. The NEP will open up the country’s education sector. The intention is to open campuses of foreign universities in India and our students get global exposure here. “Likewise, research collaboration and student exchange programmes between Indian and foreign universities will be promoted. The credit acquired by our students will be counted in Indian institutions. The NEP will establish India as a global education destination,” the prime minister said. The “high performance

institutes” of India will also be encouraged to set up campuses abroad, he added. Noting that the policy has all those things which were on the top of youths’ wish list, Modi said, “The NEP has been made multidisciplinary with flexibility given for (choosing) subjects. Multiple entry and exit options have been offered. “And most importantly, the NEP will link education with technology, and will make technology an integral part of students’ thought process. That means students will learn about technology and will learn through technology.” The NEP has also opened up paths for the use of artificial intelligence and expansion of online learning, he added. The prime minister informed the virtual gathering that a National Education Technology Forum will be set up to promote the use of technology in the learning process, and the IITs have “infinite possibilities” in that. “To enrich the research culture in the country, a National Research Foundation (NRF) has also been proposed in the NEP. The

NRF will coordinate with all funding agencies and provide funds for research in all disciplines including science and humanities. “The potential research works with practical applicability will be recognised and implemented. For that, coordination and a close linkage will be established between government agencies and industries,” he added. Modi lauded the efforts of IIT Guwahati in adopting new technologies, especially for inventing new equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic, and appreciated the introduction of a two-year research programme on e-mobility. “I am also happy to know that IIT Guwahati is leading in the integration of science and technology in BTech courses. I am fully confident that interdisciplinary programmes will make our education all round and futuristic,” he said. The prime minister said Assam and the Northeast are full of possibilities, but floods, earthquakes, landslides and many industrial disasters plague the region. “To deal with these problems, a high degree of technological support and

intervention are needed. I request IIT Guwahati to set up a Centre for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction to provide expertise for dealing with the problems andto look at how to transform them into opportunities,” he added. Modi said the Northeast is at the centre of his government’s Act East Policy, and the region is the gateway to India’s relations with South East Asia. “The base of India’s relations with these nations have remained culture, commerce, connectivity and capacity. Now education is going to be a new medium of engagement. IIT Guwahati can become a big centre for this. Northeast will get a new identity. This will also result in new opportunities,” he said. Maintaining that holistic knowledge with science as an important ingredient is the remedy for all pain and troubles, the prime minister appealed to the students to link their research to the challenges faced by the region and the potential it has. Modi also advised the students to look at the bigger canvas of global technologies while focusing on local issues.

In denial mode

t was a clear vindication of what eminent scientists, medical specialists, epidemiologists and virologists have been saying all along since the month of May, that community transmission has already taken place in India. This was again reiterated in a report in The Telegraph which revealed that the team behind the sero survey, conducted between May 11 and June 4, was asked by ICMR Director General Dr Balram Bhargava to either hold back the report from public release or remove the data on containment zones. The basis of the report was statements from seven of 74 researchers involved in the survey. According to the report, Dr Bhargava had told the researchers that the council didn’t have the approval to publish data from hotspots or containment zones. On March 28, the Health Ministry acknowledged that there was "limited community transmission" of the novel coronavirus in India. On April 9, the ICMR and Health Ministry researchers - some of them are national task force members for COVID-19 - in a journal paper, provided evidence suggesting the prevalence of community transmission in 36 districts across 15 States. The health ministry’s own admission that there was “limited community transmission”, a newly created phase between Stages 2 and 2, was again retracted. According to the report in The Telegraph as carried by The Print, on May 15, the ICMR had put the COVID-19 figure at around 86,000 whereas the ICMR’s own sero survey report had placed the figure to around 60 lakhs. According to the portal, the ICMR had under reported COVID cases. One of several loopholes in the ICMR methodology was about sample testing. Several scientists pointed to a typical example of daily ICMR reporting – “a total of 2,74,599 samples from 2,58,730 individuals have been tested. Of this, 11,297 individuals have been tested positive among the suspected cases and known positive cases in India." They pointed out that above lack of details in the bulletin was a problem since it didn’t specify how many of these were asymptomatic or largely asymptomatic. What this means is that there are many more infections that are to be counted beyond the official figures. Even months before the pandemic, an IISc study by a group of noted scientists predicted that by January 1, 2021, India would have possibly reached close to 3 crore infected cases (over 60 lakh ‘active’ cases and 10 lakh fatalities). They also predicted that the pandemic is not expected to ‘peak’ before March 2021.This may be quite a figure to digest but which cannot be dismissed outright. Dr. Jayaprakash Muliyil, chairperson of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the National Institute of Epidemiology and also former principal of the Christian Medical College, Vellore and one of India’s foremost epidemiologist had said in April that the stage of community transmission (when the source of infection for a large number of patients cannot be traced to a confirmed case), has already set in the country, even though the government is reluctant to admit it. Overall, there is a sharp increase of cases all over the country and the epidemiologists and scientists are of the opinion that the government needs to take a strong stand and admit there is community transmission so that steps are taken to see that the epidemic can be brought under control .Since the enemy (virus) has been identified, its strength needs to be known if the battle is to be won. Unfortunately, the government continues to live in denial mode.

DailyDevotion The Missionary’s Master and Teacher

You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am ….I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master… —John 13:13, 16 To have a master and teacher is not the same thing as being mastered and taught. Having a master and teacher means that there is someone who knows me better than I know myself, who is closer than a friend, and who understands the remotest depths of my heart and is able to satisfy them fully. It means having someone who has made me secure in the knowledge that he has met and solved all the doubts, uncertainties, and problems in my mind. To have a master and teacher is this and nothing less— “…for One is your Teacher, the Christ…” (Matthew 23:8). Our Lord never takes measures to make me do what He wants. Sometimes I wish God would master and control me to make me do what He wants, but He will not. And at other times I wish He would leave me alone, and He does not. “You call Me Teacher and Lord…”— but is He? Teacher, Master, and Lord have little place in our vocabulary. We prefer the words Savior, Sanctifier, and Healer. The only word that truly describes the experience of being mastered is love, and we know little about love as God reveals it in His Word. The way we use the word obey is proof of this. In the Bible, obedience is based on a relationship between equals; for example, that of a son with his father. Our Lord was not simply God’s servant— He was His Son. “… though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience…” (Hebrews 5:8). If we are consciously aware that we are being mastered, that idea itself is proof that we have no master. If that is our attitude toward Jesus, we are far away from having the relationship He wants with us. He wants us in a relationship where He is so easily our Master and Teacher that we have no conscious awareness of it— a relationship where all we know is that we are His to obey.

C

ovid-19 caught the world off-guard. It is embarrassing. It is embarrassing that the economic distress is more acute in India than in the rest of the world, especially when India was projected by many as the emerging star. Published data indicates that GDP contracted by 23.9 per cent during the previous quarter, businesses have had to shut down, jobs are vanishing, incomes are stressed and with unfriendly taxation structures the expansion plans and investments by most businesses are on hold. Even as factories try to shore up production with the gradual unlocking, the efforts to make labour laws more employer friendly are stressing the labour market. Consumer demand has weakened, supply chains are disrupted, the MSME and the informal sectors are faltering and, as jobs continue to dry up, consumer sentiments are tanking. The road ahead is not easy. The future, as it is unfolding, is worrying. The VUCA concept, so familiar in the corporate world, is mild compared to the current state of the Indian economy.

T

India at the hairpin bend

The Niti Aayog had released a report in 2019 that more Indians have fallen into poverty, hunger and inequality in the past two years. The Covid19 lockdown will certainly have pushed many more into poverty. The unemployment rate in India, which averaged 9.21 per cent from 2018 until 2020, reached an all-time high of 23.5 per cent in April of 2020. It is as if India is on a mountain road and with the weather turning humid and sticky, the road ahead is expected to be treacherous. Continuing straight on the path will further destroy economic value. The option is to take a hairpin bend and change course to reach the destination. Many skilled navigators are recommending manoeuvring the hairpin bend before the road conditions get worse. The navigator must take a call. The choice requires good judgement. If it continues straight, India will consolidate nationalist pride and achieve the religious unification of the country. The loss of economic prosperity will probably be offset in the short term by the fervour of reclaiming the past that is so deeply embedded in

the complexed psyche of its people. It will take them back to the concept of destiny, uncomplaining and helpless resignation to fate. Religion is, after all, the opium of the masses. It will help if they are shackled to the past and continue hallucinating for a future, believing that the Gods will bless them for their patience. This route may appear simpler but in reality it is like quicksand and more treacherous. The hairpin bend, on the other hand, leads to tougher terrain and is much more difficult to navigate for laymen. It requires vision, professional expertise and willingness to identify and accept weaknesses to find solutions. It leads India to a scientific temper. It embraces a dream of equality and brahminization through economic upliftment and liberalism, questioning of religious dogmas and pursuing excellence. It radiates across five fingers -- agricultural reforms, industrial output, employment and jobs, national security and strengthening of democratic institutions. If India aspires to be a superpower then it has to demonstrate its ability to

Teachers too must learn

he NEP expects every teacher to develop a comprehensive perspective on life and living and follow an application-based module. For over six decades, one has never witnessed such a strong projection of the national resolve to implement a policy. This rare privilege goes to the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020. The President of India addresses the nation, the Prime Minister addresses twice within a week, the Union Education Minister and his team seem busy 24X7, conducting and guiding national-level webinars on specific topics that would require new initiatives and action at the implementation stage. It’s evident that the nation has realised that for equitable growth, progress and development, it has to be “education, education, and education.” India is now determined to create a pool of teachers who would not only be degree-holders but possess “personalities.” These would be people imbued with a comprehensive multi-disciplinary and multi-dimensional perspective. In fact, the new approach to teacher preparation would expect every instructor to develop a comprehensive perspective on life and living. They would internalise the higher goals of education. The focus, henceforth, would be on them believing in Sarva Bhut Hite Ratah. And as was the ancient tradition, they would be life-long learners, yavadjeevait adhiyate viprah. It is, in a sense, a revolutionary recommendation that by 2030 all teachers would be prepared in multi-faculty colleges and universities through four-year integrated programmes. As one goes through the various sections of the NEP, this expectation becomes evident to everyone. The objective of achieving scharyatwa would require a strong support system that must emerge from the establishment and society. There are clear indications to ensure that: “In order to improve and reach the levels of integrity and credibility required to restore the prestige of the teaching profession, the regulatory system shall be empowered to take stringent action against sub-standard and dysfunctional Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) that do not meet the basic educational criterion, after giving one year for the remedy of breaches. By 2030, only educationally sound, multidisciplinary and integrated teacher education programmes shall be in force.” This objective of restoring the credibility of TEIs is achievable. The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) had, during 1998-99, successfully exercised this authority, and certain well-known but sub-standard teacher preparation programmes were closed down. Once teacher educators accept this responsibility, they could transform the entire system. Let them never forget that the recommendations on teacher education arise from the expectations and aspirations of the young. But somewhere besides these is also the hidden pain and anguish which was recorded – with a heavy heart – by late Justice JS Verma: “A majority of standalone TEIs – over 10,000 in number – are not even attempting serious teacher education but are essentially selling degrees for a price.” One could mention it only with immense pain, as the first chairperson of the NCTE said, that all these 10,000 institutions selling degrees were certified by senior teachers, teacher educators, professors and other academics. The policy has done its part, no more stand-alone colleges. Now it is the responsibility of teachers, teacher educators and professionals in the field to ensure that in future regulatory mechanisms are not trivialised. This policy suggests alternative regulatory structures, which would transform the manner in which future multi-disciplinary teacher preparations institutions and universities would emerge. The responsibility of

teachers at every stage would grow multifold as autonomy would be the in-thing. When one goes through the various general recommendations in the policy, one finds serious concern for drastic change in teacher education in content and pedagogy, and the need to achieve an attitudinal transformation among aspiring teachers. It is now learning, learning and more learning. Examinations shall no more be days of nation-wide anxiety and widespread tension. The focus of assessment in schools shifts to application of knowledge gained and internalised. The present pattern of examinations was transplanted in this country by alien rulers. It had been discarded in Britain much earlier but we still adhere to it in India. Teachers, and teacher educators, have a tremendous task ahead in implementing curriculum load reduction, to ensure that textbooks and textual materials are neither deficient on new knowledge nor too overloaded with obsolesce content. Teaching and learning shall become more interactive, and much would transpire outside the closed classroom. Skill development and bringing in vocational education elements early in schools would require TEIs absorbing them in their own curricula. Those who know the story of Richard Feynman would find it much easier to visualise its great transformative and inspiring impact on the system as a whole. It would be possible only when the promises to ensure the assured recruitment process are put to practice, and the assurances on the professionally acceptable teacher-student ratio is implemented without any aberrations. One must not ignore considerable dilution in the quality of education and decline in the acceptability and credibility of schools funded by the public. The policy realises this. The ancient Indian tradition of knowledge quest spreads over four stages: adhyayan, manan, chintan and upayog. And its relevance is eternal. It is the essence of the process of transfer of knowledge to generations ahead. Every teacher, henceforth, would be expected to comprehend the essence of Indian philosophy of education that finds reflection throughout this policy. Let me recall three sentences of Sri Aurobindo; first being that the process must begin with “from near, to far”; and hence the mother tongue medium and other aspects. His second principle was that “nothing can be taught.” Every active, alert and vibrant teacher shall have to grasp its essence. It is “learning the treasure within.” It is the perfection within that the child is discovering, and teachers are assisting, supporting, guiding, and much more. When Sri Aurobindo states that the “mind must be consulted in its growth,” he is emphasising how pertinent it is to “know the child.” It is the comprehension of these basic principles that has led to the restricting of the school education system to 5+3+3+4. The most significant is the addition of initial three years, after the age of 3. India would need very specialised teachers for this age group. A couple of years ago, India had anticipated the importance of open and distance learning. That experience comes very handy as the global attention diverts to online learning. Creation of digital platforms and e-content had already begun in full swing and has come handy during the corona crisis, as children are confined to their homes. The pedagogy is undergoing unprecedented change, teachers associated with schools will have to gear up to learn new skills. While tools and techniques shall change – sometimes beyond recognition – the pedagogical principles would remain the same. JS Rajput

navigate the tough terrain. It needs to evolve beyond the identity of a unified religious nation. The Covid disruption is an opportunity to get back to the basics and to focus on economic prosperity which every individual needs and aspires towards. Subroto Roy, who studied economics at the Delhi School of Economics before becoming an RBI banker and then an entrepreneur, says: “We have to return to the Keynesian era of welfare economics. India is a young nation of 120 crore people who need food, work and income. In the post-Covid environment, the focus must be to ensure that everyone is gainfully employed as propagated by Keynes. The need is to create employment and put money in the hands of the people. If we rely only on the free market mechanism that insists on economic efficiency then companies will want to reduce liabilities to protect profits and return on their investments. The post-Covid situation will be exceptional and the government has to play a crucial role.” It is, after all, the leadership tasked with steering

the country to economic prosperity. The Covid Syndrome and its impact is perhaps the biggest crisis of the century and has thrown up several faultlines that we have ignored until now. Unless corrected, India is headed to a typical situation that the erstwhile BIFR would have classified as ‘Sick Business’ and in need of a turnaround strategy. A turnaround situation is amongst the toughest challenges that businesses face -- often, because they refuse to acknowledge that they need help and the remedial action keeps getting postponed. For a turnaround strategy to be successful, it presupposes an acceptance that the business has begun to self-destruct. Turning around a disrupted business is far more difficult than accelerating a successfully running business. India is facing all the typical challenges of a turnaround situation -dropping revenues (GDP), insufficient profits (growing deficit), cultural dissonance, demoralised and complexed employees (weakened institutions) amongst others -- and requires clear vision and policies that cut through clutter

to only focus on making the business healthy. The crisis is being accelerated by the systematic dumbing down of society which, in turn, is creating tunnel visions and discourages critical thinking. We seem to have switched off our minds as though on a roller-coaster ride in an amusement park, paying for the thrill and novelty, mistaking it for a momentary thrill and expecting things to be normal when the ride stops. We need to quickly get off the ride and accept reality. There is a growing gap between the euphoria of hope and the ground reality. The only ideology that will work will be the ideology of economic welfare. India needs to reevaluate its two routes to becoming a superpower. Either continue on the path of systematic social change at the cost of the economy or take the hairpin bend and focus on economic revival and social stability. Navigating the hairpin bend will be tough but if India does not course correct now then the revival will be even tougher. India will have been caught in the turnaround trap. Himanshu Manglik (IANS)

Farm Bills will give farmers greater choice

T

hose opposing the bills have either not read them or are just worried that an empowered farmer doesn’t fit into their scheme of vote bank politics. In 1947, when India gained Independence, the urban-rural income ratio was estimated to be 2:1. That ratio now stands at about 7:1. The decline came even as farm production grew to the point that India became self-sufficient in food production and also kept exporting some food crops. For 60 long years, governments kept ruling in the name of poor farmers and ensuring that they remain stuck in poverty. Even as India attained surplus growth in agro commodities, our policies remained anachronistic and did not factor in the variety of post-production activities. No thought was given to processing, value-addition or marketing, and trade of farm produce to make the Indian farmer self-sufficient. Less than 5 per cent of India’s food and agriculture produce is processed in contrast to over 50 per cent in developed countries. Over 50 per cent of India’s population, directly or indirectly, depends on agriculture, which contributes about 12 per cent to GDP, a fact that our budgetary allocations have chosen to gloss over in the Congress era of governance. Public investment in agriculture has been below 5 per cent resulting in low capital formation and low private sector investments, leading to poor agri infrastructure. No policies were drafted to allow farmers to market their produce and earn the profits that an open, competitive market would have allowed them to make. It is against this backdrop that the government has pushed for the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill. Together, these three pieces of legislation will create a system in which farmers and traders can sell and buy

agri products outside mandis. The Bills provide for a system that encourages intra-state trade and reduces transportation cost. The Bills formulate a framework on agreements that allow farmers to engage directly with agri-business companies, exporters and retailers for services and sale of produce. All this will be achieved by giving the hardworking farmers of India access to modern technology. India’s agricultural markets restrict farmers from selling directly to retailers and getting the right price for their produce. Also, the existing system forces farmers to pay undue commissions. The Opposition has misinformed people saying the Bills open the road for corporates to exploit farmers. In fact, these pieces of legislation bring uniformity into contractual farming rules and provide a framework for trade agreements on farm produce. Farmers cannot be forced to enter into any agreement. They will be free to choose who they want to sell their produce to and a regulatory framework will protect them. Concerns over contract farming are also misplaced. Contract farming is not antifarmer by its nature. As much as 66 per cent of poultry business in India is under contract farming. Once contract farming is mainstreamed, agribusinesses will be able to pool farmers, invest in their land and make the latest agri technology available to them. The Bills are part of the Narendra Modi government’s commitment to double farmers’ income and follow its credo of minimum government and maximum governance. They are designed to free the farmers from the hold of government-controlled markets. The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill makes provisions for the removal of items such as cereals and pulses from the list of essential commodities and attract foreign direct investment in the sector. Some sections have raised the fear that this will compromise on food security. They must know the Food Corporation

of India will continue to stock essential commodities such as wheat and rice, ensuring that India’s food security isn’t hit. Also, traditional mandis will stay. The proposed pieces of legislation will only remove trade barriers and allow digital trading of farm produce. A lot of misinformation is being spread about the Minimum Support Price (MSP). A fear psychosis is being created amongst farmers by telling them that with the passage of the Bills, MSP will be done away with. Parliament has repeatedly been assured that MSP will stay. Those opposing the bills have either not read them or are just worried that an empowered farmer doesn’t fit into their scheme of vote bank politics. During 2009-2014, the budget allocation for agriculture increased by a meagre 8.5 per cent. From 2014-2019, the Modi government took it much higher – an increase of 38.8 per cent. Today, the parties that are responsible for the poverty of those who feed us are questioning our commitment to farmers. Agriculture sector badly needs high-end technologies, digital tools, entrepreneurs and farmer organisations to provide services to farmers. The Modi government has already created 2,000-plus Farmer Producer Organisations (FPO) and 10,000 more are in the works with a budgetary allocation of Rs 5,000 crore. Over 1,000 agri start-ups, driven by young technology graduates, have been created and over 20,000 agri clinics have been made possible by agriculture graduates. None of this can grow if reforms don’t happen. India has given the newage farmer internet access. Nobody should now try to stop this empowered farmer from using the same internet to access markets to sell his produce. The Modi government will do everything to empower this new-age farmer; we owe this to the people who feed us. I hope the Opposition will rise above partisan politics for this cause. Bhupender Yadav

Reader’s Post Sir,

Give a better solution

The current pandemic has caused to the shutting down of educational institutions and so online classes were introduced. For some reason it is good that the institutions are trying it’s best for the educational continuation but also there are problems being faced by the students. There are many towns under our state that has poor network connection and electricity problems and so students face problems like: Jio tower disappears and so no network connection; Electricity goes out for like 2-3 days and phone battery dies; No high speed network which makes the online classes to glitch and not hear a thing. There are also many problems and I would like the concern network authorities to look into this and give a better solution. Shilu Jamir, St. Joseph University

Govt ready to discuss farm bills, says Naidu

NEW DELHI, SEP 22 ( AGENCIES): The government on Tuesday committed in the Rajya Sabha that it was ready for the extension of time to further discuss farm-related bills and also the division of votes on condition that the suspended members expressed regret about their conduct, reports The Tribune. They had been passed on Sunday by voice vote which has been opposed by the Opposition. Responding to Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said the government had comfortable numbers in the House with 110 against 72 member opposing Bills when they were passed. Azad said the Opposition will boycott the House for the remaining period the Monsoon Session till the suspension of the members were revoked, and a fresh Bill ensuing that agriculture produce will be purchased by private parties and government agencies at MSP rates were brought in the House. Rebutting the allegation that time was not extended, Joshi said the members resorted to uncalled for aggression no sooner than he had concurred for extension of time.

Venkaiah Naidu The Deputy Chairman, Harivansh Singh, had also agreed to allow division of votes provided the members go to their respective seats and restore order. Leader of the House Thaawarchand Gehlot condemned the behaviour of the suspended members. Joshi expressed concern at Azad for justifying the unruly conduct of the eight members of the opposition parties for their unruly conduct by “laying the blame on the chair”. He appealed to the members to express regret for their conduct as it was in the interest of all that the House should function. Azad said the behaviour of the members, though improper, was an expression of the pent-up feeling of Opposition on being not allowed sufficient time to express their views. He said the division of

votes on the Bills was not allowed by the Deputy Chairman Harivansh Singh, who was presiding the proceedings. He said the discussion should have been extended to discuss the Bills, as had been asked for by the Opposition. Azad wondered at the hurry displayed by the government to pass the Bills, and also expressed doubt if it had sufficient numbers to face division of votes. In order to diffuse the situation, former Prime Minister HD Devegowda among other leaders urged that way should be found to break the logjam. House Chairman Venkaiah Naidu also expressed concern at the developments that it had hurt the image of the House. He said he was ready to consider the action taken against the members provided they express regret for the conduct. “They are our own members,” Naidu said, regretting the Opposition action of blaming the Chair for the impasse. He noted that the suspended members have been justifying their unparliamentary conduct. He informed that Harvansh Singh prepared tea himself today morning and served it to the suspended members sitting on dharna in Parliament premises.

A world-class airport is coming up on 5,000 acres in Jewar area, he said. “Uttar Pradesh had just two airports till 2017, and one of them used to get flights occasionally. Now seven airports are functional and work is underway on 25. We are checking all corners. Airports are coming up at Azamgarh, Chitrakoot, Ayodhya also,” he said, according to his office. The Chief Minister said the area identified for developing the new film city is in the vicinity of Hastinapur of Raja Bharat. This film city would become the identity of India in time to come, he said. The Chief Minister said that it would just not be a film city alone, but a world-class electronic city will also come up there and a financial city is also proposed.

25 MPs test positive, including 17 from LS NEW DELHI, SEP 22 (AGENCIES): The Lok Sabha will be adjourned sine die on Wednesday ahead of the October 1 schedule in the midst of rising COVID cases and looming fear of infection, reports The Tribune. In the recent tests conducted to ensure safety of MPs and other people visiting Parliament for the Monsoon session, 25 MPs had tested positive, including 17 from Lok Sabha. Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Prahlad Patel tested positive merely a day or two after attending the first day of the session in LS on September 14 and later a Rajya Sabha MP who had attended proceedings a day before Vinay Saharabudhe also tested positive. The LS business advisory committee in its last meeting had a consensus on curtailing the session with all opposition leaders in agreement.

MUMBAI, SEP 22 (AGENCIES): Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar on Tuesday said that he had received an income tax notice, seeking clarification about the affidavits that he had filed for elections in the past, India Today reported. Pawar accused the Centre of deliberately serving the notices to Opposition leaders. “They [the central government] love some people,” Pawar about the tax notice at a press conference. The veteran leader added that the notices were served for the elections in 2009, 2014 and 2019, and that he will reply to them soon, according to Loksatta. The income tax department also served notices to NCP leader and Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and his son and minister Aaditya Thackeray. The four leaders were served the notices after the Election Commission of India reportedly reminded the Central Board of Direct Taxes of its request to investigate allegations that Thackeray, his son and Sule had filed false affidavits. The request had been made a month ago. The NCP chief said that he will fast for a day to express his support for the eight Rajya Sabha MPs who were suspended

from the House on Sunday for their “unruly behaviour” while protesting against the government’s farm bills, NDTV reported. The suspended MPs include Derek O’Brien and Dola Sen of the Trinamool Congress, Rajiv Satav, Ripun Bora and Syed Nasir Hussain of the Congress, Elamaram Kareem and KK Ragesh of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Aam Aadmi Party’s Sanjay Singh. “I will not eat anything today in solidarity with the protesting members,” Pawar, who is also a Rajya Sabha member said. The NCP leader also questioned the way in which the bills were passed. “I have never seen bills being passed like this,” he said. “They [the Centre] wanted to pass these bills soon. Members had questions regarding the bill. Prima facie it seems like they did not want a discussion. When members did not get a response they came into the well. Earlier in the day, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson Harivansh Narayan Singh met the suspended MPs, who staged an overnight protest outside Parliament against the farm bills. Singh also said that he would fast for a day to express his anguish over the “humiliating conduct” of Opposition leaders during the tumultuous session.

ECI hosts webinar on challenges of holding elections during COVID NEW DELHI, SEP 22: To mark one year of chairmanship of the Association of World Election Bodies (AWEB), Election Commission of India today hosted an international webinar on the Theme ‘‘Issues, Challenges and Protocols for Conducting Elections during COVID-19 : Sharing Country Experiences’. A press statement by the under secretary to the EC stated that, inaugurating the webinar, Chief Election Commissioner of India and Chairperson, A-WEB Sunil Arora spoke of how countries such as South Korea, Australia, Malawi, Taiwan, Mongolia and many others who went ahead with scheduled elections even as they put in place the enormous arrangements required to ensure the health and safety of people while conducting election. Arora highlighted how Covid19 exigencies and social distancing measures necessitated a revisit of ECI’s extant instructions. The maximum number of electors at a polling station was reduced from 1500 to 1000, and consequently, the number of polling stations jumped by 40 per cent, from 65,000 to 100,000. These changes have huge logistics and manpower implications. CEC mentioned that the Commission would take a decision within the next two to three days, on visiting Bihar. Ex-

plaining in detail the scale of the upcoming elections to the Legislative Assembly of Bihar, he mentioned that the total number of electors is 72.9 million. Chief Election Commissioner also mentioned that ECI has placed a lot of emphasis on extending facilitation to senior citizens, women, Persons with disabilities and in current circumstances, ensuring franchise to Covid positive voters and those in quarantine. In this context, the CEC mentioned how, beginning with the elections to the Legislative Assembly of Jharkhand in November-December 2019, and elections to the Legislative Assembly of Delhi in February 2020, the postal ballot facility was extended to voters who are aged more than 80 years, persons with disability and those who engaged in specified essential services. This facility of postal ballot has been extended to Covid positive electors who are in quarantine/hospitalized. Over 120 delegates from 45 countries across the world participated in the webinar. The Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB) is largest association of Election Management Bodies (EMBs) worldwide. At present A-WEB has 115 EMBs as members & 16 regional associations/ organisations as associate members.

The government further proposes to make Aadhaar cards a mandatory identification document for all office-bearers, directors and other key functionaries of NGOs or associations eligible to receive foreign donations. Opposition parties have taken strong objection to the proposed amendments, saying they are a means to “target those who speak against the government”. A clause in the bill states that it will allow for the central government to hold a summary inquiry to direct bodies with FCRA approval to “not utilise the unutilised foreign contribution or receive the remaining portion of foreign contribution”.

NEW DELHI, SEP 22 ( AGENCIES): The Narendra Modi government introduced the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2020, in the Lok Sabha Sunday, seeking to make significant changes to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), reports The Print. The bill, introduced in the Lok Sabha by Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, faced objections from leader of the opposition Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, his Congress colleague Manish Tewari, and Trinamool Congress’ Saugata Roy, who termed it a means to “crush dissent” and “concentrate powers in the hands of the government”. establishment, while the Indian delegation refused to comply with the Chinese army’s demand to pull out from the southern banks of the Pangong Tso, the Chinese declined India’s emphasis on disengagement at all friction points along the Line of Actual Control

Forward deployment through the region’s freezing winter will be a first for India and China, which have posted a large numbers of troops near the LAC in Ladakh backed by artillery, tanks and other equipment. However, sources added, both sides have agreed to continue with the talks at a later stage. Diplomatic sources said, like the dialogue Monday, all future meetings between India and China on the matter will include officials from the military as well as the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). This, they said, is to ensure that the Chinese do not get an opportunity to say that Indian diplomats and Army officials speak in different voices.

ed their demands. China wanted us to withdraw from the southern banks. Our demand has been the same from day one — disengagement has to happen on all friction areas simultaneously,” a source said. China has been peeved by India’s move on the intervening night of 29-30 August, when specialised units along with regular soldiers outflanked the Chinese and occupied crucial heights along the southern bank of the Pangong Tso. The continued stalemate indicates that tensions between the two Asian giants, which began in April, are likely to continue through the winter. There are also fears that current positions could be the new status quo for quite some time.

According to Sriram Iyer, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities, the Indian rupee depreciated against the US currency weighed by risk off sentiments amid concerns that fresh lockdowns in Europe to control surging coronavirus infections could impede a quick economic recovery. “The uncertainty surrounding the fiscal stimulus package and the elections in the US added to the wariness of the recovery of the economy and weighed on sentiments,” Iyer said. The rupee depreciated by 0.3 per cent this Tuesday, its biggest single-session decline since September 8, Iyer added.

Mumbai, Sep 22 (IANS): As SEBI’s recent change in norms regarding constitution of multi-cap funds continues to cause some discomfort among mutual funds, Chairman Ajay Tyagi said that the regulator is not forcing anyone to invest in mid or small cap companies. Describing the recent “confusion” as “unfortunate”, Tyagi said, “What we are saying and what we are trying to address here is ‘true to label’.” “So when we said that multi-cap should have some portion in small cap and mid cap, we are not really forcing anyone to invest in those caps, we are sayinga investment should be done in the best interest of the investors.”

Mumbai, Sep 22 (PTI): The rupee depreciated by 20 paise to settle at 73.58 against the US dollar on Tuesday due to forex outflows and a stronger greenback in the global markets. At the interbank forex market, the rupee opened on a weak note at 73.50 and fell further to a low of 73.64 as stock markets continued to fall for the fourth straight day. Renewed growth concerns following resurgence of coronavirus cases in Europe and subsequent restrictions weighed on investor sentiment, dealers said. The rupee closed at 73.58 against the greenback, registering a fall of 20 paise over its last close of 73.38 on Monday. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against

He pointed out that rural demand had remained strong because of absence of lockdowns, good harvest and good rains. However, the local lockdowns in states had created problems in the supply chain, which has now been taken care of by the central government. Mehta said that now the economy needed interest cuts to start the investment cycle. Sanjiv Bajaj, Chairman and Managing Director, Bajaj Finserv Ltd, said that the way to revive the economy was to prevent random lockdowns and keep the economy running with the necessary precautions. “It will take 2-4 quarters for things to normalize,” he said. He said that it would help to expand credit by opening 2-3 new banks each year for the next 10 years, and the distinction between banks and NBFCs had to go. “The incumbents cannot be protected forever,” he said.

Speaking at the 47th National Management Convention of the All India Management Association (AIMA), Kumar said that credit growth had been slow this year as capex was not happening at the usual pace. He pointed out that in the last crisis in 2008, banks had increased lending by diluting norms and the country had paid a high price for that, so banks were being prudent this time. If Biden wins, China wins, says Trump

Wa s h i n g to n, S e p 22 (PTI): Former US vice president Joe Biden has enormously harmed the US economy in his five decades as a politician, President Donald Trump has said, adding that if the Democratic leader wins the November 3 polls it would be a win for China. Biden, 77, and his running mate Kamala Harris are challenging incumbents President Trump, 74, and Vice President Mike Pence in the presidential election. “Joe Biden spent the last 47 years shipping your jobs to China and foreign countries. You know that. I’ve spent the last four years bringing the jobs back to our country and back to Ohio,” Trump said at a rally in Dayton, Ohio on Monday. The Republican leader described the November 3 polls as the most important in recent memory. “On November 3rd, Americans will decide whether we lift our nation to soaring new heights of prosperity or whether we will allow Joe Biden --Sleepy Joe -- to shut

down our economy, impose a USD 4 trillion tax hike, abolish Ohio clean coal, oil, natural gas, and ship your jobs in factories overseas to China and countries that you never even heard of,” he said. The democratic tax plans for the 2020 election lists a gradual increase in proposed taxes by USD 4 trillion in the next decade, placing a greater burden on the super-rich category. “Put simply: If Biden wins, China wins. If we win, Ohio wins and most importantly, in all fairness,

America wins. Because you finally have the president who puts America first, and I do put America first,” Trump said to applause from the audience. Trump has held election rallies in the last two weeks, notwithstanding the risks posed by the coronavirus. Thousands attend the events without masks and breaking social-distancing norms. Trump has called the rallies “protest against stupidity”. “You know this is really not a rally. This has to do with workers, programs,

all the things we love. And this is really what we call ‘a friendly protest’. You know what we’re protesting. We’re protesting stupidity, okay, because so many stupid things you see,” Trump said. Seeking a second term, Trump said the people know the terrible damage that Biden has inflicted on the economy in his near-50 years in politics. “Can you believe it? For 47 years Joe Biden shook the hands of American workers and then stabbed them in the back. He said ‘Washington vultures’ I mean, think of it,” he said. “He’s been doing it for 47 years. I’ve been doing it for three and a half years so he should be able to beat me I would think. He’s much more experienced. Oh! he’s great. Oh! he’s a beauty. But he betrayed you. He lied to you. He abused you. Which is why it’s time to retire Joe Biden. This is serious talk,” Trump said. Biden championed the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and China’s entry into the World

Trade Organization (WTO), Trump said, adding that the NAFTA had many adverse affects on the US economy and China’s entry into the WTO led them to go up like a rocket. The World Trade Organization considers China as a developing nation, Trump said. “No. They’re not a developing nation. By being a developing nation they get all sorts of advantages over us so we’ve been protesting it,” he said. As vice president, Biden did nothing even as China stole intellectual property, flooded the market with dumped goods, unfairly subsidised its industries, manipulated its currency, Trump alleged.“They poison our communities with fentanyl. 98 Afghan civilians killed in past 2 weeks Kabul, Sep 22 (IANS): Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry has said that at least 98 civilians were killed and 230 others wounded in Taliban attacks in 24 provinces in the last two weeks as violence has increased in the country amid the ongoing peace efforts. “The Taliban has inflicted the casualties on our countrymen in 24 provinces and the most casualties have been in Takhar and Nangarhar provinces,” TOLO News quoted Ministry spokesman Tariq Arian as saying. Security source said that an average of at least 30 security forces have been killed on a daily basis in Taliban attacks in the last two weeks and 50 members were killed in just 24 hours. The Taliban has however, rejected the figures provided by the Ministry. The increase in violence comes amid efforts by the negotiating team of the Afghanistan government in Doha to start direct talks with the Taliban.

‘Pak using terror groups to change status quo in J&K’

Washington, Sep 22 (PTI): Pakistan has used terrorist groups to change the status quo in Jammu and Kashmir, which has undermined every peace effort and impacted human rights negatively, a Barrack Obama-era diplomat has told US lawmakers. In a statement to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, and Nonproliferation, Alyssa Ayres, senior fellow for India, Pakistan, and South Asia at the Council on Foreign Relations think-tank, said the situation is complex and tragic in Kashmir. The committee is scheduled to hear on “Stemming a Receding Tide: Human Rights and Democratic Values in Asia.” There is documented history of Pakistan-based terrorists active in Indianadministered Kashmir, and Kashmiris and the Indian government continue to face a difficult challenge of border security and terrorism in this region, Aryes said.

“Terrorism has undermined every effort at peace in the last two decades and continues to create insecurity. I would also like to acknowledge the long standing suffering of the Kashmiri Pandits, a Hindu community driven from their Kashmiri homeland in the early years of the insurgency at the beginning of the 1990s,” she said. Ayres said the Indian government revoked Article 370 last year to tackle terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. “More than a year on, it is hard to see improvements on that front,” she said adding that the impact on democracy and human rights has been negative.

2 dead, 20 injured in Jakarta floods Russia to register second Covid vaccine by October 15

In West Java province’s Sukabumi district, flash floods killed two people with one remaining missing, and the search mission is underway, Ramli Prasetio, press officer of the Jakarta Search and Rescue Office, told Xinhua news agency. Hundreds of rescuers have been taking part in the search and rescue operation, including soldiers, police and those from the Jakarta search and rescue office, among others, he said. Jati said that the floods in the capital forced 15 persons to evacuate from their homes and take shel-

ter in safer grounds, but in Sukabumi district, 210 families took shelter after flash floods and landslides hit the area. The disaster lalso seriously damaged nine houses, 10 bridges in the district. A warning has been put in place by the meteorology and geophysics agency over the possibility of extreme weather on Wednesday. Residents are cautioned to be alert on the possibility of further floods, flash floods and landslides as well as whirlwinds, the agency said.

EU tells UK to ‘stop playing games’ on Brexit future trade relations, chaos is expected at the borders on January 1. Companies on both sides are set to lose massive amounts of money as new red tape and tariffs will fundamentally change business practices. Johnson’s proposed a bill earlier this month that would disregard part of the withdrawal treaty dealing with trade between Ireland and UK only added to the frustration. “Dear friends in London: Stop the games. Time is running out,” said Roth ahead of the meeting. “What we really need is a fair basis for negotiations.” Johnson is pushing ahead with plans to pass the bill into law in the coming weeks. Former Prime Minister Theresa May on Monday accused Johnson of acting “recklessly and irresponsibly, with no thought for the long-term impact on the standing of the United Kingdom in the world.” The EU has given Johnson until the end of the month to withdraw his bill or face EU action. That would further escalate tensions and dim any remaining hope of getting a trade deal ahead of October15, which Johnson himself has set as a deadline.

Brussels, Sep 22 (AP): The European Union is pleading with Britain to stop playing “games” as time is running out to clinch a free trade deal over the next month. The sides committed to a new meeting to discuss Britain’s plans to disregard part of the withdrawal agreement it had signed with the 27nation EU amid acrimony that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson would even contemplate to break an agreement he himself signed. EU countries’ ministers for European affairs met in Brussels on Tuesday and German chairman Michael Roth said the British plan was “extremely” worrisome since it “violates the guiding principle of the withdrawal agreement,” which officially allowed the United Kingdom to leave the bloc last January 31. A transition period now runs until December 31, during which time both sides are negotiating a trade agreement to replace the open and unfettered economic relations that are currently in place. The EU has repeatedly expressed its exasperation at what it sees as British stubbornness and refusal to compromise on some key points. Without a deal on

Dr. Dre’s estranged wife accused of embezzlement A

ttorneys for a company founded by Dr. Dre is accusing the rapper’s estranged wife of criminal embezzlement, claiming she’s draining that very company’s business account to line her own pockets. The company, Record One, now wants her to pay the money back or else it promises to take legal action. Back in 2015, Dre and Larry Chatman started Record One, a company operated by an LLC. Nicole Young, Dre’s ex, was reportedly a trustee and signatory on the LLC’s checking account. In the letter sent to Nicole, which was obtained by TMZ, attorneys for the LLC allege that Nicole wrote a $363,571.85 check to herself last month that “decimated the company’s bank account. The check was attached to the letter. The letter accuses Nicole of “blatant and unjustifiable criminal embezzlement of corporate funds, as well as a breach of her fiduciary duties,

TMZ says. Record One is giving Nicole until Sept. 29 to return the money. If she doesn’t, attorneys said she can expect a formal lawsuit. Nicole’s layer denied any wrongdoing on the part of his client. “This is just a lowgrade PR stunt by [Dr. Dre] and his team to try to change the fact that he

was caught red-handed and sued for trying to cheat Nicole out of community property to which she is entitled, attorney Bryan Freedman said. “There is no question that Nicole had both the contractual and the legal right to have taken this action and Andre’s team is well aware of this fact. Any suggestion she did something untoward is preposterous and

Jackie Stallone, Sylvester Stallone’s mother and astrologer, dead at 98

S

ylvester Stallone’s mother, Jackie Stallone, has died. She was 98. Jackie, an astrologer and an early wrestling promoter who appeared on the “Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling in the 1980s, died in her sleep, her son and Sylvester’s brother, Frank Stallone, confirmed on social media late Monday. “She died in her sleep as she had wished. It was hard not to like her, she was very eccentric and flamboyant person, Frank wrote on Instagram. A cause of death has yet to be revealed. She was the mother of Sylvester, 74, and Frank, 70, whom she shared with her first husband, Frank Stallone Sr. She was predeceased by her daughter, the late actress Toni D’Alto, whom

she shared with Anthony Filiti. She reportedly died of lung cancer in 2012 at the age of 48. Born Jacqueline Frances Labofish on Nov. 29, 1921 in Washington, D.C., Frank described his mother as a woman who “lived through Prohibition, the Depression and World War II. Frank said he would talk to his mother “for hours about the ‘20s, ‘30s and ‘40s. “It was a history lesson, he said in his tribute. “Her mind was as sharp as a razor till the day she died. She never wore a mask a true revolutionary gal. I guess I’m drowning in my emotions in tears and to much vino. But when you’ve known someone for 70 yrs it tough and sad. Jackie was known for

her fondness of working out even later in life. She often posted her daily workouts, including dance classes, on Instagram. Back in April, she shared a snapshot of herself lifting a medicine ball and a dumbbell in the gym, writing, “I’m staying fit, I am studying the accordion daily, đ&#x;¤Ť I think I know as much as my teacher does Frank said his “remarkableâ€? mother worked out “every day,â€? adding that she was “full of spunk and fearless.â€? In 1989, she released a book titled “Star Power: An Astrological Guide to Supersuccess.â€? In his tribute, Frank credited Sylvester for caring for her “like a Queen for all of her life.â€? pathetic.â€? The split between Dre, real name Andre Young, and Nicole has gotten incredibly contentious. In late June, Nicole filed for divorce from Dre, ending their 26-year relationship. Soon after, she’s alleged that she was forced to sign a prenuptial agreement (she also claimed Dre ripped up the paperwork a few years later, which he’s denied). Last week, she alleged that she co-owned some of Dre’s most valuable assets, including the Dr. Dre name, and said the hip hop mogul was hiding assets so that she can’t get to them. In her lawsuit, Nicole claims she “caught [Dre] secretly transferring valuable trademarks he owned with his wife ‌ to a newly created asset holding company that he created and controlled after he expelled his wife from their home, and before he threatened to file divorce.â€? The trademarks, she believes, are community property. (Wonderwall)

esy Nelson and her Little Mix bandmates are considering quitting social media due to its effects on their mental health. The Shout Out to My Ex hitmaker documented her struggle with body image and online abuse in last year’s BBC documentary Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out - and noted the group have often considered getting offline. BBC Breakfast host Dan Walker asked members of the band if they’d considered deleting their accounts and Jesy said: “We talk about it all the time. I think we’re a lot better with social media than we used to be. I think we’re not on it as much as we used to be - we’re not as obsessed with it. She went on to say that “mentally it’s not good for her to spend lots of time online. Discussing her relationship with social media, bandmate Perrie Edwards added: “I feel guilty when I don’t post enough. Because I don’t post an awful lot on Instagram and I feel bad for our fans that do want to see us post. It’s like trying to find a balance because, it’s just weird. (Music News)

Alex Runarsson

London, Sep 22 (IANS): Goalkeeper Alex Runarsson has joined Arsenal FC on a four-year contract from French club Dijon, the club has announced. The 25-year-old Iceland international joined the Ligue 1 club in July 2018 and made 13 appearances for them in all competitions last season.

Alex started his career with KR Reykjavik in his home country. He went on to join FC Nordsjaelland in Denmark, where he made 62 appearances during a three-year spell, before moving to Dijon. Head coach Mikel Arteta said, “We want to create healthy competition for places and we look for-

ward to seeing Alex bring further depth to the goalkeeping position.” “We’re very pleased to welcome Alex to our squad. We have been monitoring him for some time and from the analysis, he has strong attributes that we look for in a goalkeeper and as a person,” said Technical Director Edu.

Milan, Sep 22 (Agencies): Inter Milan have reached an agreement with Barcelona to sign Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal for one million euros ($1.17 million) on a permanent deal, the two clubs announced on Tuesday. Vidal, who joined Barca from Bayern Munich in 2018, will be reunited with Inter coach Antonio Conte, who signed him for Juventus in 2011 and where he stayed until 2015. “The Italian club will pay Barcelona 1 million euros in variables,” Barcelona said in a statement here. “Barcelona would like to publicly express their gratitude to Arturo Vidal for his commitment and dedication and wishes him all the best for the future.” Vidal made 96 appearances for Barca in two seasons, scoring 11 goals and providing 10 assists in all competitions, helping the Spanish side win the La Liga title in 2018-19.

He missed a chance for a third just after the hour mark following a counter-attack launched by Hakan Calhanoglu, but Lukasz Skorupski proved solid in the Bologna goal. Bologna were again saved by Skorupski at the end of the match, with the Pole pushing out a Hernandez volley. Milan keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma also won his duel against Andreas Skov Olsen while Federico Santander hitting the woodwork for the away side. Bologna finished a man down with Mitchell Dijks send off with two minutes to go but it made no difference to the match. “They had Ibrahimovic, we didn’t,” said Bologna coach Sinisa Mihajlovic. “Ibra made the difference, everything Milan created came through him. But it was a balanced game. Maybe we didn’t believe in ourselves enough, but the lads were in it to the end, we created two big scoring opportunities.”

SRH lost the game by 10 runs. “It seems a serious injury. I am not sure if he be able to compete in any of the matches,” a team source told PTI. The team has not yet officially commented on the extent of his injury. It will be a huge loss for SRH, who may now consider bringing in 37-year-old Dan Christian, who has the experience

of playing 40 IPL games during previous editions as a middle order batsman and a right arm seamer. World number one T20 all-rounder Mohammed Nabi could get a look in into the playing XI. SRH skipper Warner had praised his compatriot for coming out to bat despite being in pain. “It doesn’t look great. A lot of courage from him to walk out there and try his best, but it was unfortunate tonight,” Warner told Star Sports. “Obviously, what you saw out there, it was quite painful, he can’t put any weight on it.”

Spurs- Orient Carabao Cup match called off

Rome, Sep 22 (Agencies): Karolina Pliskova said she hopes to be ready in time for next week’s French Open after pulling out of the Italian Open final with an injury on Monday to hand Simona Halep the title. Top seed Halep claimed her first title in Rome after second seed Pliskova struggled with a left thigh injury, being bagelled in the opening set before she opted to retire when she was 2-1 down in the second. Pliskova blamed the sudden switch from hardcourt to clay and late matches giving her little time to recover. The Czech said she had been feeling the niggle since her quarter-final victory over Elise Mertens. “I have to see the doctor to see that it’s nothing... I really want to be 100% ready because if I want to go far in a Grand Slam, that’s two weeks of tennis,” Pliskova said. “I felt it from the match with Mertens and it was growing everyday... Kolkata Knight Riders to take on Mumbai Indians Abu Dhabi, Sep 22 (PTI): Grace and strength will be on one side while poise and killer instinct on the other when a revamped Kolkata Knight Riders take on Mumbai Indians, who have once again faltered in the beginning of the IPL, on Wednesday. Since 2013, MI have never won an opening game and the script didn’t change against Chennai Super Kings, who took control of the match during the last 10 overs of the first innings. They will be keen to bounce back while KKR would look for a perfect begining as it will be a battle between big hitters on both sides on a sluggish Abu Dhabi track. It will be Shubman Gill’s third IPL, the one where he would like to own the stage with his languid grace and effortless hitting, which he is so capable of. He can hit sixes over extra cover with grace and caress the ball through covers too. These are exactly the traits that made Rohit Sharma, the great white ball exponent that he is. Seasoned Rohit versus young Shubman is one for the keeps and makes this battle enticing. K Y M C

Kolkata Knight Riders players during a training session.

But it’s not just grace which makes T20 so appealing. The brute masculinity of power that sends the ball soaring into the orbit is what makes it so special. Hardik Pandya, who is back with a chiselled body.

There is no doubt that he can unleash his firepower against Sunil Narine and Kuldeep Yadav as well as KKR’s highest paid multi million dollar recruit Pat Cummins. The second pacer could be between Prasidh Krishana and Kamlesh

Nagarkoti. But Hardik will find his match in Andre Russell, easily the most destructive hitter in current T20 cricket. Russell had openly criticised the team management last year for sending

him down the order. He had hit 52 sixes during one of KKR’s worst editions. But this time, he has been promised a promotion to number three slot and this could spell doom for any opposition. KKR has Eoin Morgan, easily the best white ball captain in international cricket at the moment, who could advice Dinesh Karthik on how to tackle tense moments. Whether he would fit in among the four overseas players is the question as Knights have Narine, Tom Banton, Russell and Cummins, who walk into any T20 playing XI. For Mumbai, it is important that Nathan Coulter-Nile, with more all-round T20 utility compared to Trent Boult, gets fit to add more balance. Apart from pacers and spinners Krunal Pandya and Rahul Chahar, they need one more option in the bowling and that can be in form of Pandya and Kieron Pollard. Both Hardik and Pollard, who did not bowl against CSK can jointly share the responsibility of another bowler.

Dubai, Sep 22 (PTI): Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh is likely to be ruled out of the remainder of the IPL as the ankle injury he suffered during the game against RCB has turned out to be “serious”, team sources said on Tuesday. Playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Marsh was handed the ball by skipper David Warner to bowl the fifth over but he could bowl only four deliveries. Marsh, whose career has been marred by a series of injuries, twisted his ankle in the second ball while trying to stop a drive by Aaron Finch in his follow through

Croatia’s Ivan Rakitic ends international career

Mumbai, Sep 22 (IANS): Ace Indian archer Atanu Das is confident of a successful show at the Tokyo Olympics which will now be held next year. Das recently revealed how the setback of Rio Olympics, where he lost to South Korean Lee SeungYun, helped him reassess the way he trained and approached his game. “I was very excited for my first-ever Olympics in Rio. Unfortunately, I lost in the quarters. I was very disappointed after that loss. I didn’t want to talk to anyone for the first two months. I learned a lot from that loss,” the 28-year-old said while speaking with paddler Mudit Dani on the latter’s online live chat show ‘In the Sportlight’. Das, who is currently training at ASI Pune, has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics along with compatriots Tarundeep Rai and Pravin Jadhav in the men’s recurve team event following an impressive show at the 2019 World Championships. “I’m preparing very hard for the 2021 Olympics. Rio 2016 was my first one but Tokyo will be the best one and I will be a lot more prepared,” Das said.

Ivan Rakitic

ZAGREB, Sep 22 (Agencies): Ivan Rakitic (32) has played his last international for Croatia. The Sevilla midfielder has said goodbye to the Croatia national team, the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) confirmed on Monday. “Saying goodbye to the Croatian national team is the most difficult decision in my career, but I felt that this was the moment when I had to break and make that decision. I enjoyed every game I played for my homeland, and unforgettable moments from the World Cup will remain among my favorites,” Rakitic said. “I am convinced that

we still have a great team with a bright future ahead. I wish my friends and teammates all the sports luck in the world for the upcoming challenges, and they will have the biggest fan in me.” Rakitic, who earned 106 caps for Croatia and scored 15 goals during his career, talked about his decision with Zlatko Dalic, HNS president Davor Suker, and captain Luka Modric, and in the coming days, he will address the public with a statement. Born in Switzerland to Croatian parents, Rakitic played for Switzerland at youth level but decided to represent Croatia at senior level. K Y M C

Sharjah, Sep 22 (PTI): Sanju Samson’s effortless six-hitting exhibition along with Jofra Archer’s magnificent all-round show formed the cornerstone of Rajasthan Royals’ comfortable 16-run victory over Chennai Super Kings in an IPL match here on Tuesday. Rated as the weakest among eight teams, Royals without a Ben Stokes or a Jos Buttler in their playing

XI did most things right under skipper Steve Smith. On a placid Sharjah track, Royals amassed 216 for 7 largely due to Samson’s 74 off 32 balls that had nine maximums apart from a solitary boundary. He found an able ally in skipper Steve Smith, who opened in T20 cricket for the first time in his career and scored 69 off 47 balls without much fuss while making a comeback

to competitive cricket after a concussion break. But it was Archer’s four sixes off Lungi Ngidi in the final over that tilted the scales decisively with 30 runs coming off it. Even going by the easy nature of the track, scoreboard pressure was always there and CSK still managed 200 for 6 with Archer (1/26 off 4 overs) swinging it in favour of Royals with a decisive 19th over.

Rahul Tewatia (3/37 in 4 overs) also need to be credited for his wickets at the top of the order. It was always a catchup game for CSK and one imagined that their skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni would at least try and come up the order but he came at No 7 when the match was as good as over. The night belonged to Samson, a man rated for his talent but criticised for his lack of consistency. He always has one or two incredible IPL days every year. Tuesday was one such day when he was at his brilliant best. Piyush Chawla after a dream start to his IPL career was hit for three sixes in one over by Samson, all clean hits that landed several rows behind. His skipper also joined the six hitting competition hitting four himself adding 121 for the second wicket in just 9.2 overs. What stood out was the minimum effort he used in lofting the straight sixes as the bat looked like a mere extension of his hands. Chawla (1/55) and Ravindra Jadeja (0/40 in 4 overs) were targeted keeping short boundaries in

mind and 95 runs came off those 8 overs from slow bowlers. Just when it looked that a century was there for taking, Samson was holed out at deep extra cover trying to hit Ngidi for a six. Once Smith was out in the 18th over, a total of 200 that looked so imminent after first 10, started looking distant. Till Archer decided to use his bat like sword and scythed through a hapless Ngidi, who lost nerve and length simultaneously. Four sixes and 30 runs finally proved to be decisive. CSK did try at one stage with Faf du Plessis (72 off 37 balls) launching into Jaydev Unadkat (0/44 in 4 overs)’s final over hitting him for three sixes and seven in all. However Archer bowled a lethal short ball that grew big on Du Plessis to close in the match with Dhoni’s (29 off 17 balls) three sixes in final over were in a lost cause. Brief Scores RR 2 1 6 / 7 ( S a n j u Samson 74, Steve Smith 69, Jofra Archer 27*; Sam Curran 3/33) CSK 200/6 (Faf du Plessis 72, Shane Watson 33, MS Dhoni 29; Rahul Tewatia 3/37).

citizenship rigged, says prosecutors

Luis Suarez

ROME, Sep 22 (Agencies): Italian prosecutors said on Tuesday they had evidence that the language exam taken by Barcelona’s Uruguay striker Luis Suarez to obtain Italian citizenship ahead of a possible move to Juventus was rigged. Suarez, whose wife is of Italian descent, passed the exam last Thursday at the University for Foreigners in Perugia. It cleared the way for a fast-track citizenship approval which would mean Juventus could sign him without exceeding its permitted quota of non-EU players, but suspicions were quickly raised in the media that he was given preferential treatment. Perugia chief prosecutor Raffaele

Cantone said his investigations showed the questions had been agreed with Suarez ahead of the exam and it had already been decided what mark to give him, despite his scarce knowledge of Italian. Police searched the university on Tuesday looking for further evidence, Cantone said in a statement, while Italian newspaper la Repubblica reported that five university employees had been put under investigation, including the rector. Suarez himself is not cited among those under investigation. La Repubblica published alleged conversations tapped by police during their probe, in which a tutor preparing Suarez for the exam told a colleague

“he can’t speak a word,” and described him as an absolute beginner in Italian. Suarez, 33, obtained the intermediate B1 qualification required for citizenship in just 15 minutes, his examiner said after the test, and was only required to do the oral part of the exam. Other citizenship applicants taking the B1 exam on the same day in Rome, had to also complete a written paper lasting two-and-a-half hours. Suarez’s mooted transfer to Juventus now looks unlikely, as the Serie A champions have moved to sign striker Alvaro Morata from Atletico Madrid, while the Uruguayan international seems set to take Morata’s place at Atletico.

Djokovic completes 286th week as No.1 Man City kick off EPL campaign with win against Wolves

Novak Djokovic

Rome, Sep 22 (IANS): Novak Djokovic, who has started his 287th week at the number one position in the ATP Rankings, has gone past Pete Sampras (286 weeks) for second place in the all-time list of most weeks at the numero uno spot. Sampras, who was ranked number one for the first time on April 12, 1993,

spent a total of 11 stints in top spot, with his longest run of 102 weeks between April 15, 1996 and March 29, 1998. On Monday, Djokovic won the men’s singles title at the Italian Open after defeating Diego Schwartzman of Argentina in straight sets. He defeated Schwartzman 7-5, 6-3 to clinch a record-breaking 36th Mas-

ters 1000 crown, one more than Rafael Nadal. “Pete was my childhood idol growing up, so of course surpassing his record is very special to me,” said Djokovic as per the ATP Tour website. The 17-time Grand Slam champion, who began his fifth stint at the summit of men’s professional tennis on February 3, 2020, is now 24 weeks away from breaking Roger Federer’s record of 310 weeks at No. 1. If he continues to hold onto the top spot, he will pass the Swiss legend’s record on March 8 next year. “This is one of my two biggest professional goals,” said Djokovic. “To reach the record of, (and) surpass Roger’s record for longest (time at) No. 1 and win as many (Grand) Slams as possible. I have been saying that before, so I’m working towards that. I’m at a good place right now, in a good position. Hopefully I can stay healthy and continue to play well,” he added.

London, Sep 22 (Agencies): Manchester City got their Premier League campaign off to a flying start with a 3-1 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers thanks to first-half goals by Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden plus a late Gabriel Jesus strike on Monday. The result means there has not been a single drawn match in the opening two rounds of Premier League fixtures and the 44 goals over a single ‘game week’ is a record for the 20-team era. Wolves beat City home and away last season but Pep Guardiola’s side were full value for their victory despite a strong response from the home side after they went 2-0 down. Guardiola gave a debut to close-season signing Nathan Ake, the Dutch defender signed from Bournemouth, lining up alongside John Stones in the centre of defence. While City were given a rest in the first week of the season, due to their August involvement in the Champi-

ons League, they were sharp out of the blocks, quickly finding their rhythm. PFA Player of the Year, De Bruyne put City in front with a penalty in the 20th minute. The Belgian broke into the box and was brought down by Romain Saiss before getting up to convert the spot-kick himself. City’s trademark passing game was at its very best for their second goal just

past the half-hour, Foden ending a fine move with a clinical finish from a low Raheem Sterling cross. Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio did well to keep out a De Bruyne effort as City threatened to put the game beyond them before the break but it was a different story after the interval. Wolves’ Daniel Podence broke goalwards but his attempted chip went over

the bar and Raul Jimenez was then picked out by a low cross from Adama Traore but the Mexican side-footed wide from inside the box. The home side finally gained some reward in the 78th minute when Jimenez headed home a Podence cross, but in stoppage time Jesus made sure of the win for the visitors with a shot which deflected off Conor Coady.

The planned return of spectators to sports venues in England from October 1 could be on hold for six months due to fears over a second wave of coronavirus infections. Britain Prime Minister announced a range of restrictions, including those related to mass gatherings. “We have to acknowledge that the spread of the virus is now affecting our ability to reopen business conferences, exhibitions and large sporting events,” he said. “So we will not be able to do this from October 1 and I recognise the implications for our sports clubs which are the life and soul of our communities, and my right honourable friends the Chancellor and the Culture Secretary are working urgently on what we can do now to support them.” He said the measures being announced on Tuesday would remain in place for “perhaps six months”.
