Pak prepares operational plan: report

Select targets in India; to retaliate in case of aggression, surgical strikes NEW DELHI, SEP 23 (AGENCIES): Pakistan’s armed forces have reportedly selected targets in India in case the latter decides to move first with strikes against the country. In a Geo TV report, it is stated that an operational plan has also been prepared by the military establishment to retaliate against any possible offensive from across the border. Quoting sources placed in the defense establishment, the news report states that tar-

gets in ‘war-mongering’ India have been selected in case of ‘aggression or surgical strikes from the enemy.’ One such source has said that Pakistan is fully prepared to counter India. “Pakistan is fully prepared to meet any military challenge from India. Our operational plan is ready, quid pro quo targets are finalised and forces have been dedicated.” Another source is quoted as saying that regardless of the nature of developments in the

weeks to come, Pakistan forces will remain on high alert. “Whether it is a Cold Start or hot pursuit, we are ready. India is well aware of our capabilities and also knows the fact that despite the Pakistan Army’s participation in internal security issues, a military balance is well maintained to meet any challenge from across the border.” The source even went to the extent of saying that ‘in case of surgical attack from

India, Pakistan would immediately respond for which targets had already been set.’ Tensions between India and Pakistan have spiked since the terror attack on an Indian army base in Uri on Sunday. Four terrorists were gunned down but 18 brave soldiers also lost their lives, even as India came out strongly to condemn the incident and the entire terror network in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). international terrorism, Poe said “There is now a mountain of evidence against Pakistan. The reason is that Pakistan plays both sides”. “It takes money from the United States and some of that money lands up in the hands of the ISI, which then uses that to fund international terrorism,” Poe said. Asked if it would be accurate to describe Pakistan as an “Ivy League of Terrorism”, he said, “Yes, it will be a fair description of what Pakistan has become.” On the question of whether India should militarily respond to the Uri attack, which is the popular mood in the country, he said, “I shouldn’t advise what the Indian government should be doing but it is well within its rights to decide what it wants to do.” Ted Poe along with fellow Congress member Dana Rohrabacher have recently moved a bill to declare Pakistan a terror state.

European Parliament vice president Ryszard Czarnecki on Friday said the EU may impose sanctions on Pakistan if it doesn’t stop human rights violations in Balochistan. “We have bilateral, economic and political relations with Pakistan and if Pakistan doesn’t change their policy in Balochistan , then we will have Czarnecki (File) to change our policy towards Pakistan,” Czarnecki told news agency ANI. Czarnecki who attended a vigil in support of Baloch freedom fighters said,” There are some very brutal massacres committed in Balochistan by Pakistan. Not it’s time for us t act. We cannot accept it.” The European Union leader’s statement comes at a time when India is considering political asylum to Baloch freedom fighters exiled by Pakistan. Tripura assembly disrupted over CM’s remarks

A gartala , S ep 2 3 (IANS): The Tripura assembly’s proceedings were disrupted on Friday as opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislators accused Chief Minister Manik Sarkar of “humiliating” the country at a summit here and walked out of the house. A ruckus was witnessed in the assembly as treasury and opposition benches engaged in a heated exchange of words on the issue. The six TMC legislators, who recently quit the Congress and joined the party, then walked out. Responding to the charge, Sarkar said he had just advised the Indian government “not to show big-brother attitude with the neighbouring countries as we should help each other for mutual benefit”. “As an Indian, I have the right to advice the Indian government about the country’s foreign policy,” Sarkar told the house. Earlier, raising the issue, the TMC lawmakers led by Sudip Roy Barman told the house that the chief minister, while addressing the third ‘North East Connectivity Summit’ on Thursday, “humiliated the country” in the presence of foreign delegates by saying that “India has been acting as a big brother with the neighbouring countries”. “Pakistan has been alleg-

ing that India has been acting as a big brother. Sarkar’s comments are similar to Pakistan’s allegation against India,” said Barman, who was supported by other five TMC lawmakers. The three-day summit organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci) and supported by the Tripura government was attended by diplomats, officials and business representatives from Russia, Japan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. Congress legislators led by their leader Gopal Roy too staged a walkout over the rejection of a motion by Speaker Ramendra Chandra Debnath on the August 23 ethnic violence in Agartala. The Congress demanded a judicial probe by a high court judge into the ethnic violence in which 24 persons were injured and 17 vehicles damaged. Meanwhile, West Bengal assembly member Manas Bhunia, who quit the Congress to join the TMC, on Friday urged Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy to take action against Sarkar for his comments. “The TMC will come to power in Tripura in the 2018 elections, ending the 23year rule of the Left Front,” Bhunia said at a gathering organised by the TMC’s youth wing here.

He warned of befalling similar fate to other inter-state travel agencies if they continue to transport migrant workers into the state. Moirangcha reiterated that the ban on entry of nonlocals except students and government employees would be continued until Ibobi government introduces and pass a bill to check ever increasing influx of migrants into the state. He also warned that the JCILPS would be compelled to intensify its campaign with various forms of agitation like picketing at the residences of state legislators and public curfew to the non-locals etc if the government fails to convene a special session within this week. The JCILPS would also boycott any Union ministers visiting the state until government give a positive response to the demand of the JCILPS, Moirangcha added.

Itanagar, Sep 23 (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu today said all Advanced Landing Grounds (ALGs) in the state should be made fully functional for regular use at earliest possible. “We had several meetings with the Indian Air Force authorities regarding ALGs but a few issues are still unresolved. We need to move ahead with concrete decisions so that all the ALGs are made functional for regular use as soon as possible,” Khandu said. He was speaking in a meeting with IAF Chief of Eastern Air Command, Air Marshal C Hari Kumar here. The Chief Minister directed the state Civil Aviation Secretary to personally intervene and coordinate with the IAF authorities to sort out all pending issues, an official release said here. He sought a detailed report on this from his secretary by October 30. Seven ALGs in the state were handed over to the IAF for making them functional. AASTGA demand undisrupted LPG supply Jorhat, Sep 23 (Agencies): Over 300 activists of the All Assam Small Tea Growers’ Association (AASTGA) on Thursday blocked National Highway 37 at Jorhat for two hours from 11am demanding undisrupted supply of LPG. Hundreds of tea factories in Assam have been suffering from acute LPG shortage, leading to serious losses for the state’s tea industries. “We have demanded that the government take steps to provide LPG to the bought leaf factories in Assam soon. Due to the shortage of gas supply in the factories, over 1.2 lakh small tea growers have been incurring huge losses over the past one month,” president of the organization Durlov Borah said. The organization sent a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan to take steps to ensure adequate LPG supply to tea factories at the earliest. Life in Jorhat was disrupted due to the protest. Hundreds of buses to and from the upper Assam districts of Tinsukia, Dibrugarh and Sivasagar were stranded on the highway due to the blockade. Trucks and other private and public vehicles were also stranded, affecting traffic in Jorhat.

issues like encroachment and constructions around few of these ALGs remain a security concern that have to be resolved before fully operationalizing them, the statement said. Khandu admitted these concerns raised by IAF that cannot be compromised and asked officials to create awareness among the people and convince them to abide by the pre-conditions that would come with the much needed airconnectivity. He sought special attention of the officials on the ALGs of Ziro and Aalo that have major issues of air safety and air-space, especifically for use of fixed-wing aircrafts, as raised by IAF due to presence of civilian population in the vicinity of landing strips. Chief Secretary Shakuntala D Gamlin observed that confidence of the local populace, who have emotional and historical attachments with their habitations, has to be won and an amicable solution evolved in consensus with them. “We make it clear that we have no objection to a civilian terminus in these ALGs. It is upon the state government, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to decide how to go about it,” Air Marshal C Hari Kumar said.

Itanagar, Sep 23 (PTI): The high-voltage political drama revolving around the resignation of two Congress MLAs in Arunachal Pradesh came to an end today with Speaker Tenzing Norbu Thongdok restoring their membership in the sixth Legislative Assembly. The Supreme Court, while disposing off a review petition filed by Congress MLAs Wanglam Sawin and Gabriel D Wangsu pertaining to their membership in the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly, in its order had on August 24 had stated that parties to the litigation have agreed to the effect that the matter can be remanded to the Speaker so that it can be decided afresh after hearing the concerned parties. “We are sure that the Speaker shall decide the matter expeditiously, preferably within one month from the date of receipt of a copy of this order,” the apex court had said in its order and directed both Sawin and Wangsu to appear before the Speaker on September 19 so that the date of further hearing could be decided. The Speaker in his order

today said, “After the inquiry conducted by me by hearing the two MLAs on September 19 last and after careful application of mind to the material and law before me, I come to the conclusion that the resignation letters are not voluntary and are not genuine.” “I therefore reject the purported resignation letters of September 16, 2015. Sawin and Wangsu will continue as members of the Assembly from the date of their election as though nothing interrupted their membership in the House and they are entitled to their salary, allowances, pension and other amenities from the date they were denied these pecuniary and other benefits,” Thongdok said. With the restoration of Sawin and Wangsu as members of the Assembly, the number of Congress candidates rose to three in a House of 60, while PPA has 43 MLAs, BJP (11) and two Independent members. The Hayuliang seat fell vacant after Kalikho Pul committed suicide on August 9 last. Both the MLAs had submitted their resignations to the then

Regd. No. 210

Speaker Nabam Rebia on September 16 last year and it was accepted on September 30. Rebia had subsequently issued a notification on October 1, saying the two seats had fallen vacant and that the Election Commission of India (ECI) would be informed accordingly. The two MLAs had moved the High Court, which on October 9, stayed the notification that declared Kanubari and Khonsa East Assembly seats, from where the 2 MLAs were elected, as vacant. The court had also directed the ECI not to go ahead with plans for holding by-polls in the constituencies. Before filing their appeal in the High Court, Wangsu and Sawin, had in separate letters to Rebia, withdrawn their resignations stating that they were forced into it by the then Chief Minister Nabam Tuki and that the letters be treated as “invalid, null and void until and unless submitted in person”. The Speaker then filed a petition in Gauhati High Court which was accepted by the court and resignations of both the MLAs were accepted.

They have revealed their true colours. Nawaz Sharif has misused the UN platform. He was speaking like LeT chief Hafiz Sayeed. Pakistan should stop dreaming of Kashmir and think of saving Balochistan and Sindh,” Hussain told reporters here. Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to this coastal city for attending the BJP national council meeting where he is expected to speak on Uri terror attack, the BJP said Pakistan is the root cause of terrorism and it should change its name to “Athankisthan”. Raking up Kashmir, Sharif had glorified Wani as a “young leader” even as he expressed readiness for a “serious and sustained dialogue” with India for peaceful resolution of all outstanding disputes, especially Jammu and Kashmir.

Mumbai, Sep 23 (IANS): The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) on Friday gave a 48-hour ultimatum to all Pakistani cine and tele-artistes to quit India or face consequences. MNS Chitrapat Sena chief Ameya Khopkar told the media that there was “an anti-Pakistan” wave across India after the September 18 terror attack that left 18 Indian soldiers dead at Uri in Jammu and Kashmir. “The MNS calls upon all Pakistanis working in Indian tele-serials, films and other shows to leave the country within 48 hours. If they fail to do so, we shall deal with them in our style,” Khopkar warned. Among the Pakistani actors and singers known to be based in Mumbai or frequenting the city are Fawad Khan, Ali Zafar, Atif Aslam, Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Salman Ahmad, Mahira Khan and Ali Azmat. MNS Vice President Shalini Thackeray said that wherever films or teleserials were being shot with Pakistani actors, MNS activists would go and stop them after the 48-hour deadline lapses. “This is not a veiled threat… This is a direct challenge to producers like Karan Johar who promote Pakistani artistes. We are writing to all production houses asking them not to give work to Pakistani artistes,” Thackeray said. Another party Vice President, Vageesh Saraswat, said that in the past they had issued similar warnings and always stuck by them.

Scarlett case: Both accused acquitted, mother ‘devastated’ Panaji, Sep 23 (PTI): Eight years after British teenage girl Scarlett Eden Keeling was found dead on a beach in Goa, a children’s court here Thursday acquitted two local men accused of drugging, sexually abusing and leaving her to die on the shore. Goa Children’s Court Judge Vandana Tendulkar acquitted Samson D’Souza and Placido Carvalho of all the charges in the high profile case, which had cast a shadow on the coastal resort, a former Portuguese enclave. Carvalho and Samson were charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, sexual abuse and drugging. As the verdict was pronounced in a jam packed court hall, Scarlett’s mother Fiona MacKeown did not hide her deep disappointment. “I am devastated, I am shocked,” said Fiona, who waited for long for the verdict in the case as the trial dragged on for years due to several reasons, including withdrawal of the initial prosecutor and failure to get the deposition of a key witness from abroad. Talking to reporters outside the court here, Fiona, who flew down to Goa from Davon (UK) to be present in the court for the final verdict, said, “I am shocked. I was not expecting acquittal. I was expecting conviction. I will challenge the order.” Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar termed the judgement as “unfortunate”,

An upset Fiona Mackeown, the mother of British school girl Scarlett Keeling, comes out of the court after the verdict in her daughter’s rape and death case, in Goa on Friday. (PTI) but said it will not hamper the image of the coastal state. “I have just heard about the verdict, I have not gone through the entire judgement. I feel the outcome of the verdict is heartbreaking, it is very unfortunate. Unless, I go through the judgement I would not be in a position to detail my reaction,” he said. “It is a heartbreaking judgment...I feel that such a outcome of the case needs to be challenged in the higher court,” he added. The 15-year-old’s bruised and semi-nude body was found at Anjuna beach on February 19, 2008. After the body was found, Fiona stayed in Anjuna for a couple of weeks trying to

piece together the evidence in the case. Goa Police was accused of trying to hush up the case. The police had initially dismissed it as a case of drowning, but later registered it as culpable homicide, after Fiona pressed for a second autopsy, which found that the girl was drugged and raped. CBI, to which the probe was handed over later following repeated pleas made by Scarlett’s family, had filed its chargesheet in the case in 2009. The case had grabbed international attention as British citizens used to form the largest number of tourists visiting Goa.

India signs deal with France to buy 36 Rafale jets New Delhi, Sep 23 (IANS): India on Friday signed a deal with France to buy 36 Rafale fighter jets to meet critical operational requirement for a multi-role combat aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF). Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian signed the agreement in this regard here. The deal was preceded by tough negotiations over the price and is expected to cost India some 7.87 billion euros. The deal also has a provision for transfer of technology through offsets. Soon after the deal was signed, Parrikar said in a tweet: “Will significantly improve India’s strike and defence capabilities.” The tough price negotiations led to a delay in the finalisation of the deal, which covers delivery of 36 planes, spares and weapons. The fighter plane will be equipped with Meteor, a beyond-visual range air-to-air missile expected to considerably advance IAF’s capability in aerial combat. The Rafale aircraft would have advanced

features like advanced electronically scanned array radar, mid-air refuelling and advanced electronic warfare equipment. Informed sources said the jets would arrive in India in batches, with the first two coming in the next few months. A team from France was camping in New Delhi for

two different students who spotted the suspicious men at different times and described them similarly, security agencies took the tip seriously and informed the Navy. The Marcos commandos spoke to them as well as the police. “As per the reports, five to six persons were sighted in pathan suits and appeared to be carrying weapons and backpacks,” naval spokesman Cdr Rahul Sinha said in a statement. Soon after the Uran police learnt about the suspicious men, Navi Mumbai police commissioner Hemant Nagrale arrived with over 500 cops. Security was stepped up at the ONGC refinery and the naval base at Mora, and the combing operation began. Navy’s Seaking helicopters joined for aerial surveys of Uran town, its adjoining coastal areas and the eastern seafront of Mumbai, which boasts of vital installations like

BARC and the naval western command headquarters. The news about the suspected terrorists spread fast, resulting in the closure of schools and colleges in Uran and nearby areas. Shops too downed shutters for the day. The Uran court was evacuated. Additional chief secretary (home) K P Bakshi said the Centre had been briefed and national security adviser Ajit Doval was keeping a close watch on the situation, he said. The Navy has issued its highest alert, putting all its personnel on duty. “Under the State-1 alert level, the different naval establishments and bases in and around Mumbai are being meticulously checked and searched inch by inch. No chances can be taken,” said a Navy officer. “The girl student suspected the five-six men to be terrorists as they had firearms on their shoulders and backpacks that reminded her of terrorists. She also heard the men saying that they will split into two groups and attack ONGC and a school.Hence, she got scared and told the class teacher about it. Another boy student claimed that he too had spotted a man of similar description. Without delay, the class teacher informed me. The girl has been interrogated by several police officers, but her version has not changed. But now she is visibly scared,” said principal Swati Shiralkar of the Uran Education Society’s school. The witnesses have been moved to an undisclosed location.

hile India appears to be drawing closer to the US or it’s the other way around; there is no doubt that the events in the subcontinent where Pakistani backed terror groups have forced the Americans to have a serious relook at their once ‘reliable and long-time ally’. US considers Pakistan as its “major ally” and also financially aids it (by the millions). So isn’t it natural for India to have reservations against US? Another reason: once India populates its air force with US-made aircraft models, what is the guarantee that the US won’t arm twist India and blackmail it into doing things which suits their interests? It can stop supply of spare parts required for maintenance and repair. It has done it to Iran in the past. Having said that, India has to continue wooing US for non-military interests. This is because India needs continued FDI in non-military industries. No harm in doing business but why buy strategic military hardware? Doing business doesn’t mean that we have to toe the US line in every walk of global affairs. Russia, China, and to some extent France/EU are the only forces who are willing and have the capibilty to create a “multi-polar” world order. Whereas US & UK were always in the favor of a “uni-polar” world order. A multi-polar world is always healthy for global peace and stability. The Anglo-American geo-political strategy in the middle east in particular has resulted in the birthing of dozens of cold blooded murderers and thugs going under whatever name and also destroying the lives of millions, most of who have been forced to seek refuge or asylum in various countries. In an extraordinary situation, the relations between the quartet- India, Russia(USSR), Pakistan and USAappears to have been switched. After the Manmohan Singh government forged close ties with the then Bush administration; it was Modi who has gone further in cementing the ties with the Obama administration. Thus, today the Indo-US relations is on the high; far from the time when Americans were largely with their most trusted ally, Pakistan. Again, during the past few years, Pakistan has gone closer to the Russians as a counter. Today, relations between one time bitter foes who fought on opposite sides in Afghanistan are today good friends. Today there is more defense cooperation as both have signed an agreement on military technical cooperation in 2014. There have not been any arms purchases yet, but talks on four transport helicopters are mostly finished. Then, there were small-scale drills, and this year there will be joint drills in the mountains. Americans did give some aid to Pakistan in recent years, but these amounts didn’t make Pakistan dependent on Washington. Pakistan has other close friends, and China is one of them. From this point of view, Russia’s slight approach to Pakistan looks logical. Russia and Pakistan have common interests in economy and security. Russia also wants to work with different partners in the region and not be stuck with just one partner. In this regard, India would do well to retain its time-tested relations with Russia, which had stood by it during IndoPak wars in the past. America is a capitalistic nation with its own agenda of geo-politics that is driven by vested interests.

DailyDevotion The Missionary’s Goal He…said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem…” —Luke 18:31 In our natural life our ambitions change as we grow, but in the Christian life the goal is given at the very beginning, and the beginning and the end are exactly the same, namely, our Lord Himself. We start with Christ and we end with Him— “…till we all come…to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ…” (Ephesians 4:13), not simply to our own idea of what the Christian life should be. The goal of the missionary is to do God’s will, not to be useful or to win the lost. A missionary is useful and he does win the lost, but that is not his goal. His goal is to do the will of his Lord. In our Lord’s life, Jerusalem was the place where He reached the culmination of His Father’s will upon the cross, and unless we go there with Jesus we will have no friendship or fellowship with Him. Nothing ever diverted our Lord on His way to Jerusalem. He never hurried through certain villages where He was persecuted, or lingered in others where He was blessed. Neither gratitude nor ingratitude turned our Lord even the slightest degree away from His purpose to go “up to Jerusalem.” “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master” (Matthew 10:24). In other words, the same things that happened to our Lord will happen to us on our way to our “Jerusalem.” There will be works of God exhibited through us, people will get blessed, and one or two will show gratitude while the rest will show total ingratitude, but nothing must divert us from going “up to [our] Jerusalem.” “…there they crucified Him…” (Luke 23:33). That is what happened when our Lord reached Jerusalem, and that event is the doorway to our salvation. The saints, however, do not end in crucifixion; by the Lord’s grace they end in glory. In the meantime our watchword should be summed up by each of us saying, “I too go ‘up to Jerusalem.’ ”

Christian nominalism: Unspoken evil

T

hree years ago,a noteworthy study on religious belief and social well-being was published in the Journal of Religion & Society where a comparison was made ofthe 18 booming democracies from the U.S. to New Zealand, author Gregory S. Paul exposed that faith in a deity doesn’t necessarily strengthen society. The statistics found that secular societies have lower rates of violence and teenage pregnancy than societies where many people profess belief in God. This new study showed that Japan mostly consisting of atheistic population(over 80%) embraces evolution and fewer than 10% are certain that God exists. Despite its size – over a hundred million people – Japan is one of the least crime-prone countries in the world. It also has the lowest rates of teenage pregnancy of any developed nation. Next in queue are the Norwegians, British, Germans and Dutch. At least 60% accept evolution as a fact and fewer than one in three are convinced that there is a deity. There is less teenage pregnancy. Homicide rates are also low -- around 1-2 victims per 100,000 people a year. At the other opposite end comes America. Over 50% of Americans believe in God, and only 40% accept some form of evolution. The U.S. has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy and homicide rates are at least five times greater than in Europe and ten times higher than in Japan. Though statistic doesn’t prove that atheism is weightier than theism but it does leave us pondering as to whether the pills of religions is really assisting the world. Religion does more harm than good if it’s swayed by extreme radicalism and fundamentalist or irrational

propagandas. It emits poisonous smokes wherever it inhabits. It invokes fear and legalistic rules and norms whichbinds people. Christianity as a religion is growing clandestinely in the gospel-resistant populaces. Christian community boast about those growths. On another page, the so-called many Christian nations in the West and European nations have witnessed therise of Christian nominalism. The “Christian state/country” tagappears more a disrepute than repute because of innumerable points defying the Laws of God’s book. Christianity for most has become a matter of traditions, feastings, festivities and culture. They abused the freedom of power granted in their hands. But who am I to point finger when the rest of it is pointing right at my own face. Anarticle published recently on reviewing the tag “Nagaland for Christ” by one of our local astute writer was a pertinent point in the light of the despicable settings in which we find ourselves in. With 90% or more so claiming to believe in the life-changingreconciliation gospel, it has proved a disastrous testimony to the world. With unrestrained sexual immorality, religious disunity, fighting, greed, bigotry, internal dissidence, political mayhems and the like;we negate our Christianity. The Christian culture thing is really proving very unhealthy. Now Christianity has been reduced to a set of rules of “do’s” and “don’t.” Grant meto jot a few clichés and let’s face the fact head-on:Shouldn’t our society be the most transparent and least corrupted place in India? Shouldn’t our streets be the safest place for denizens to roam about inthe midnight

hours? Shouldn’t our roads be the best of all among the seven sister states? Shouldn’t our society be the most generous in helping the lost and broken if we claim to be who we are? And questions could pile up. But maybe we have a faulty assumption of what Christianity is!What we have married to is not Christianity but Churchianity! Nagaland has married the wrong bridegroom and it’s proving to be a fatal blow to all the institutions from top to bottom. I perceive that Christian nominalism is an unspoken evil that pervades our land. There’s not a town or village in our land where Church (building) is missing but the real Church (body of Christ) is rarely found. I’m not a perfectionist and I ain’t expecting that of the Church either. But is it not perplexing that a 90% Christianized population still stands unabashed today in the laxity and decadence of our moral, social, political and spiritual level? Would we request the demographists to reduce the level of Christian statistic in our land? Wouldn’t it be better if we call ourselves a pagan society and involves in the dirty affairs that we so love? Wouldn’t it exalt Christ more if we are plain honest about our indifference about His word and kingdom? There is no middle-ground in calling ourselves a Christian. Either you follow Him or you follow the world. Lukewarm attitude is repulsive is God’s sight.Christ said that. With that in mind, Christian nominalism has deep-seated roots in our land and it’ll be hard to pull it out. The so-called Christians should realise that a name-tag will not save them. The Christian life is about a total transformation of the life

lived in the realm of undivided attention to follow Christ. The church in Sardis wore a Christian label, but Jesus saw the truth behind the label: “To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead” (Revelation 3:1). Or, as the KJV reads, “Thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.” Greater responsibility comes with greater amount of knowledge gained. Nagas have learned much but done very less. None of the sermons preached on Sunday pulpits lack any difference from well-known preachers in the world. Our problem then, is not information but action. A Native American proverb reads, “You can’t wake a person who is pretending to be asleep.” This message rings loud to Christians who are hearing the call of God to stand up for justice but pretending to sleep and roving in sackcloth. The passivity of Christians in disengaging with the societal, ethical and moral issues will boomerang soon if Christians don’t act quickly. Don’t let the statistic deceive us from being complacent in evangelising and bringing Nagas back to God! Don’t boast about the outward statistic of our rotten “90% Christian” religious population! This religious statistic shouldn’t blind us from looking deeper into the real face of unregenerate minds and hearts of our people. At the moment, the need of our land is not revival but regeneration, quoting a scholar’s voice from Hyderabad University. God Bless my Nagaland! Vebu Khamo, Seoul Christian University, Korea

Vote for clean election or ticket to hell

A

peaceful periodic festival like election is a sign of a mature political system and Nagaland being a Christian dominated state should have been leading the way in setting up the benchmark for clean election for other states to follow suit but looking at the present political culture of our society it looks a distant dream. In fact election is a time where most of the good Christian tries to confirm their ticket to hell in advance. Our society being a Christian state is packed with events like revival, youth camp, spiritual awakening and not to forget the Wednesday, Saturday, women service and the Sunday church services. In all those services the topic usually revolves around peace, love, compassion, honesty, truthfulness etc and to spread the kingdom and gospel of God through our deeds but when the fever of election kicks in all hell break lose among the Nagas and the concept of peace, love, honesty etc are all kicked out of the window and the peace loving and cheerful Nagas let loose of their dark side and unleash it against our fellow Nagas, all in the name of tribe, money, jobs, land, vehicle etc taking pride in proxy voting, selling ourselves to the highest bidder and ignorantly convincing ourselves that God will ignore our deeds because its election time. In any examination good conscience students will not cheat even if they have the opportunity to do so which solves half of the problems for the invigilators and for those students who intended to cheat are prevented from adopting any unfair means, if the invigilators are vigilant and honestly fulfill their duties. Similarly the campaign for clean election will be successful only with the active support and participation of the public. Unlike other states majority of the voters are Christians and if half of the population pledge for clean election then half of our problems get solved and for the few percentage of people who will indulge in anti-social activities no matter how much preaching we may give can be taken care of by the Election commission who has various means at its disposal to check such people provided they are vigilant and act without any biasness. Kudos to all those organization, NGOs, pressure groups, religious organization, local artists etc who are voluntarily and tirelessly campaigning for clean election for the better future of our Naga society and to glorify God . Let the coming election be a time where we fulfill our duty as a responsible denizen of Nagaland and good children of God by pledging for clean election instead of confirming our ticket to hell all in the name of election. Women Reservation vis-à-vis Naga customary practices

W

hen the male dominated Naga civil organizations sing in unison that women reservation, with regard to Urban Local Bodies, is against the customary practices of the Nagas, they are right. Traditional and customary practices of the Nagas never granted equal rights or any kind of rights to women in any major decision-making process. At the village level, the village chief along with his council of advisors, all males and mostly fierce warriors, would decide for the village on all important matters; whether it is about war or peace, rituals and religious practices, cultural events or agricultural activities. At the household level, it is again the male head who makes the final call on almost everything that concerns the family. Therefore, when you hear your male elders saying that reservation is against the customary practices, show some respect, they are just trying to carry on the legacy inherited from their proud ancestors. Harsh but true. Those men are utterly embarrassed to openly admit that women

hold no place, traditionally, in decision making process. Therefore, the only alternative argument they could provide is to assert that Naga males and females enjoys equal rights and status and therefore,needs no affirmative policy.Sounds fair, but the improvement in status and welfare of Naga women were not brought about by the efforts of the Naga customary institutions. Most Naga tribes, if not all, do not even allow womenfolk’s to participate or go near the Morung, the traditional institution for learning and training and where major decisions were taken. Should a choice been given to those holding customary offices, they would have uphold their traditional belief and said no to things that empowers women like female education or franchise. One can imagine where we would be if such regressive practices were allowed to dictate our social, economic and political policies. Having said that does in no way mean to denigrate our customary practices. Many customary practices are useful and relevant today;

those should be preserved and be put into good use. Similarly, some have become redundant and outdated and have been discarded from social practices. The point of contention, however, is on the argument that women reservation is against the customary practices of the Nagas. If reservation is anti-customary, then Nagas enjoying ST reservation or some tribes availing backward quotas are also anti-customary. Not just the women reservation. Therefore, if women reservation have to be barricaded on the basis of anti-customary practices under Article 371A, the same yardstick should be applied for any kind of affirmative policy in the state to make things fair and square. Amidst such outpouring of opposition for women reservation from numerous civil organizations, what is deafening is the deafening silence of the women in our society. Had it been in other societies, women would be in the streets, holding placards, protesting and demanding for what they believe is rightfully theirs.American women fought for nearly a century

ith inviting reference to the subject cited above, the under signed begs to apprise that the W/C employees are suffering from untold miseries due to non release of monthly salaries since last 5 months w.e.f May to September, where as the employees of PWD (H) and PWD Mechanical are enjoying their salaries after every two months.

That sir, it is also pertinent to mention here that many schooling children are compelled to give up their studies because of non clearance of their dues in their respective schools by their parents and also their parents are unable to feed them in time. All these are happening due to non release of salaries by the government. In the light of the above

circumstances your venerable authority is beseeched to look into the matter meticulously and take prompt initiative for releasing the pending salaries within the 1st week of October, failing which the association will be compelled to go to agitation at Kohima along with all the W/C employees. to secure women’s suffrage. History is alive to remind us that any struggle for emancipation, opportunity and equality has never been easy. Their silence, however, could mean three things. First, they are indifferent, they don’t care or they may not even have an opinion. Secondly, they might have become so accustomed to men’s deciding for them. Thirdly, it could be an indication that women still don’t have a voice or that they are frustrated due to constant suppression of their voice. Whatever be the case, those signs are not healthy, not just for the women but for the whole society as a whole. Equality does not mean equal, for unequal’s cannot be treated equally. Therefore, ‘equality’ should be embraced according to facts and circumstances not in some random order. In the present Naga context with no female MLA since statehood, it sounds outlandish and hilarious to equate men with women, at least in the electoral politics. There is no denying that women are doing better in schools, their net enrolment ratios are improving and more female candidates are

cracking competitive exams. That happens because a system has been put in place though modern governance that provides a level playing field for men and women equally in terms of access, participation and opportunity. But such level playing field are missing in electoral politics because of the existence of social discrimination against female candidates. Between the period 1969 to 2013 only 15 female candidates has contested in state assembly election of which none gets elected, in contrast to 1960 male candidates (MoamenlaAmer, 2013). Such contrasting picture reveals the slim chance of women being elected even in the future, unless through some affirmative policies. Affirmative action, anywhere, do generates intense controversies, but such policies are intended to create opportunities to socially deprived groups or minorities. Though affirmative policies may have flaws, its goal is to break down barriers and glass ceilings, create a level playing field, and remove social disparities and inequalities. The gender unbalance in

representation to decision making bodies, in our case, can therefore, be corrected only through a process that recognize the realities and the vices of the social and political system that prevents women from assuming such offices. Hence, mere lip service that women enjoy equal opportunities as men will not lead to immediate correction of such blatant disparities. Lastly, the proposal for female nomination in the urban local bodies with voting rights may sound catchy, but will not serve the purpose of true representation, as those nominees will not be representing any municipal ward. A representative representing nobody cannot be termed as a representative. They will be, at best, a rubber stump representative without any assignments or delegation of powers. Moreover, nomination methods will create unnecessary politicization and dilute the system, as political parties will pick and choose such candidate to achieve their political goals, rather than to empower women. The division also acknowledges Union Urban Minister Venkaiah Naidu for selecting Kohima as smart city and stated it will go down in the history of Nagaland. Moreover, bringing great relief from traffic congestion for Dimapur and Kohima citizens in particular and public in general by getting sanction of Rs. 340 crore from central government for improvement of Highway from Dimapur to Chumukedima and Kohima check gate to Lerie, the division acknowledges Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang for the numerous development in the State. NPF Dimapur division reminds those firms to diligently execute the works as per the specification of work order. L.Choba Lotha, Gen Secretary & I.Nungsang Jamir, President

Sir,

Kohima smart city

The Chief Minister, T.R. Zeliang has succeeded to add Kohima in the Smart City list, despite the odds. As pointed out by H. Chishi in the Telegraph dated 22nd Sept 2016, Kohima is decorated with abandoned structures such as the NST Complex, Town Hall and Parking Complex; to name a few. The Chief Minister should not be let down by the stake-holders but could be frustrated by Natural factors, as remarked by his colleague Y. Vikheho Swu, the Minister for Roads & Bridges. Is it still a possibility for a change and shift of the Capital to nearer the Air-port, Rail-station and other amenities. The Chumukedima/Virazouma/Sukhovi/Vidima/ Razaphema/Pimla; joint valley might provide a probable plan City. This is a personal view nevertheless with common interest for the future generations. The total support extended by the government under the Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS) has been enhanced to Rs 23,500 crore per annum from the present Rs 22,000 crore, the commerce and industry ministry said in a statement. “Against the backdrop of the continued challenging global environment being faced by Indian exporters, the department of commerce has extended support to certain new products and enhanced the rate of incentives for certain other specified products under MEIS,” it said. It said 2,901 additional products falling under different categories have been added under this scheme. The items include traditional medicines like Ashwagandha herbs, certain marine products, sea feed items, onion dried, industrial products such as engineering goods, fabrics, garments, chemicals, ceramics, glass products, newspapers, periodicals, silk items, tubes, pipes and the like.

months, the government has raised the minimum support price of pulses to boost domestic production and control prices. It has also taken steps for creating a buffer stock of two million tonnes through local procurement and imports. According to the first advance estimate of foodgrain output released by the Agriculture Minister on Thursday, production of pulses is pegged at a record 8.7 million tonnes in the kharif season this year. The retail prices of pulses have risen sharply due to a fall in production in the last two years. Government sources said the country’s pulses output is estimated to increase to 20 million tonnes in the 2016-17 crop year (July-June) on account of good monsoon after two drought years. However, as requirement of pulses and domestic demand has shot up to 24 million tonnes, the production is still on the lower side. The Centre has taken steps to encourage farmers to focus more on cultivation of lentils, sources said. India is hosting the twoday 6th meeting of BRICS member nations on agriculture and agrarian development that began here on Thursday. New Delhi, Sep 23 (IANS): The central government on Friday urged BRICS nations to help meet the supply-demand gap in pulses and edible oils in the country. India will like to seek cooperation from other BRICS member countries (Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa) to meet production shortfall in crops like pulses and oilseeds, Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh said. Speaking at a conference of Agriculture Ministers of BRICS here, Singh said there is ample scope for cooperation in agricultural trade among these nations. This, he explained, will open better “business opportunities” for BRICS countries. “All must work together to enhance trade among our countries by resolving market access issues”. The minister said innovative working models must be developed, like contract farming and leasing of surplus land. Officials said the central government had started importing pulses through state-run Metals and Minerals Trading Corporation and even entered into an arrangement with Mozambique for long-term supply of lentils. Pulses’ production fell to 16.47 million tonnes in the 2015-16 crop year from 17.15 million tonnes in the previous year. Over the last three

Mumbai, Sep 23 (PTI): The rupee today closed almost flat at 66.65 against the US dollar as currency traders restrained from taking any major positions ahead of the weekend despite positive sentiment emerging out of US Fed meet outcome. Financial and currency markets across the globe reacted positively to US Federal Reserve’s monetary stance to keep rates on hold overnight. Moreover, country’s current account deficit (CAD) falling substantially in the June quarter to just USD 300 million also had its impact on overall trading pattern, a forex trader commented. The rupee opened lower at 66.69 against Thursday’s closing value of 66.66 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market and drifted further to 66.73 on fresh demand for the American currency from importers and weak local equities. It largely fluctuated between a high of 66.62 and a low of 66.73 throughout the day, due to uneven dollar demand and supply before ending at 66.65, revealing a mere 1 paisa gain. The domestic currency had soared by 36 paise, its biggest single-day spike in four months, to close at a two-week high of 66.66 yesterday.

Overseas, Asian stocks edged lower amid a slew of economic data. In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite settled 0.28 per cent lower, in Hong Kong, Hang Seng closed 0.31 per cent lower, while Japan’s Nifty moved down by 0.32 per cent. Indices in Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan moved up by 0.21 per cent to 0.53 per cent. Europe was also down after the euro zone flash composite PMI fell to 52.6 in September, from August’s reading of 52.9. Key indices in France, Germany and the UK fell by up to 0.50 per cent.

Washington, Sep 23 (PTI): An Indian-American physician and author has been presented with the National Humanities Medal, America’s highest humanities award, by US President Barack Obama for his contribution in the field of medicine. Currently a professor of medicine at the Stanford School of Medicine, Abraham Varghese has authored several acclaimed books including ‘My Own Country’ and ‘Cutting for Stone’. He was presented with the medal along with several other recipients at a ceremony held at the White House yesterday. “The 2015 National Humanities Medal to Abraham Verghese for reminding us that the patient is the center of the medical enterprise,” the citation of the medal read. “His range of proficiency embodies the diversity of the humanities, from his efforts to emphasise empathy in medicine, to his imaginative renderings of the human drama,” a military aide to the US President said, reading from the citation. “All of today’s honorees work in an age where the stories we tell and the technologies that we use to tell them are more diverse

of Rosetta, when it sank. It had waited at sea for many hours — perhaps days — for smaller wooden boats carrying migrants to arrive from different points along the Egyptian coastline. Survivors said that overcrowding caused the boat to capsize. The head of the local council in the area, Ali AbdelSattar, said that the currents have carried the bodies of the victims many kilometers

away from the site of the sinking. “Today, four bodies, including two Egyptian children, were found 20 kilometers to the east,” he told the AP. He added that many of the migrants are believed to have been “stored in the bottom of the boat, in the fridge.” “Those are the ones who drowned first, most probably stuck, and their bodies might not be retrieved

anytime soon,” he said, adding, “those we found are the ones liberated from the boat. I believe many are stuck and now laying in the bottom of the sea.” He said the boat may now have sunk to 16 meters (yards) below sea level. The UNHCR estimated that the boat was packed with some 450 people, while the state news agency MENA said earlier that the number might be as high as 600. “UNHCR is deeply sad-

Raheel Sharif turned the tide against terrorism primarily due to resilience displayed by the whole nation and professionalism of our security forces”. Diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan have been rising since the September 18 attack on an army base in Uri in Jammu and Kashmir that killed 18 Indian soldiers. Pakistan has rejected allegations of its involvement in the assault even as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif again raked up the Kashmir issue in his speech at the UN General Assembly session yesterday.

Then there was the abuse. Visited by the French news agency AFP in their village after their release, the girls had injuries and scars on their arms which they say were inflicted by their captors. “I have a scar from where an iron was stamped on my leg and a scar on my head as well,” one of the girls, now 16, told AFP. “This was a wound from a knife, because my cooking was not OK,” she said, showing a mark on her nose. The other girl, now 17, has burnt, twisted fingers - the consequence, she says, of them being broken deliberately by her captors as punishment. The allegations of mistreatment are shocking, but it’s the authorities handling of the case that has really enraged the Burmese public. Many see it as further proof of a judicial system stacked against the poorest and most vulnerable. On several occasions over the last five years, the girls’ families say they asked the Burmese police for help and were turned away. It was only when a jour-

nalist called Swe Win became involved that things started to move. He approached the police, who again refused to help, before taking the matter to the national human rights commission. To its credit, the commission did act, negotiating with the tailor for the girls’ release and for a payment equivalent to about 4,000 dollars (£3060) to be made, effectively as backpay. But there was public outcry when it emerged that no further measures were taken against the girls’ alleged abusers. “We figured at the time that we could solve the case satisfactorily to all parties involved with a compensation settlement,” U Zaw Win, a member of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission told an angry news conference in Yangon. With the girls’ story now front page news and reverberating around social media, the Burmese police were finally spurred into action. On Wednesday evening the tailor was arrested, along with her two adult children. They all now face charges related to human trafficking.

Aleppo pounded in new Syrian army offensive Aleppo, Sep 23 (AFP) Syrian and Russian aircraft pounded rebel-held areas of Aleppo today, a monitor said, after the army announced a new offensive aimed at retaking all of the divided second city. An AFP correspondent in the opposition-held east of the city reported intense bombardment both from the air and by ground artillery. It came after the Syrian army announced late yesterday that it was launching a new offensive to retake rebel-held parts of the city. A military source said the bombardment was in preparation for a ground operation. “We have begun reconnaissance, aerial and artillery

bombardment,” he told AFP. “This could go on for hours or days before the ground operation starts. The timing of the ground operation will depend on the results of the strikes and the situation on the ground.” An army officer in Aleppo confirmed that the ground assault had yet to begin. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported at least 30 strikes on rebel-held districts during the night and early today. The Britain-based monitoring group said at least 10 people had been killed, among them two children, and dozens wounded. It said more dead were feared buried under the rubble.

New York, Sep 23 (PTI): A terminal at New York’s busy LaGuardia airport was today evacuated after authorities found an unattended vehicle outside the terminal, causing confusion and security concerns among passengers. Terminal B of the airport was evacuated late last night (local time) after a man allegedly drove the vehicle to the terminal and ran way after abandoning it there, media reports said. Armed Security personnel and bomb squad arrived at the scene and investigated the vehicle. The NYPD bomb squad responded to the scene and found that the vehicle was safe, reopening the terminal after the nearly hour-long lockdown, a report in ABC 7 said. Port Authority had confirmed they were investigating an unattended vehicle at the terminal and everyone was evacuated from the area as a precaution about 11 pm. Bomb Squad swept the area and said the vehicle was deemed safe. The terminal reopened about 12:30 am. Those evacuated from the airport tweeted about the chaos at the airport during the shutdown, as some were seen in video walking towards Terminal C with their luggage. All traffic and in and out of LaGuardia Airport was also stalled during the investigation, but resumed after the terminal reopened. Last month, law enforcement authorities evacuated parts of the J F K International Airport here after

Yangon, SEP 23 (Agencies): The Burmese president has ordered an investigation into the case of two girls who say they were kept prisoner and tortured for five years in a tailor shop. The teenagers were freed last week after a journalist helped them, but their families say that the police had on numerous occasions refused their pleas to get involved. This Wednesday, with the case now generating headlines, the police finally arrested the tailor and two family members. The two girls were aged just 11 and 12 when they were sent by their parents to the commercial capital Yangon. For poor Burmese families it’s a painful but depressingly common decision. The United Nations estimates that at least a million Burmese children are forced to give up on education and go to work. These girls became maids in a tailor shop in the centre of Yangon. But what started as paid work allegedly turned into modern-day slavery. The girls say they were denied contact with their parents, were unable to leave and were no longer being paid.

He also directs the Stanford interdisciplinary center, Presence, which reflects these interests. Born in Addis Ababa in 1955, Verghese’s parents were recruited by Emperor Haile Selassie to teach in Ethiopia. He grew up near the capital and began his medical training there. When the emperor was deposed, Verghese briefly joined his parents who had moved to the United States because of the war, working as an orderly in a hospital before completing his medical education in India at Madras Medical College. dened by the loss of life after yet another boat capsized in the Mediterranean,” the U.N. refugee agency said in a statement. Of the 150 people rescued, UNHCR said that the majority are Egyptians, while the others are Sudanese and other nationalities, including Somalians and Eritreans. On Thursday, four people described as members of the vessel’s crew were arrested over charges of human trafficking and manslaughter. Egypt has been a traditional route for migrants travelling to Europe by sea. However, UNHCR said that since 2014 there has been a steady increase in the number of people intercepted while trying to leave. Over 4,600 people of different nationalities were arrested this year, UNCHR said, a 28-percent increase compared to last year. The EU border agency, Frontex, recently said more than 12,000 migrants arrived in Italy from Egypt between January and September this year, compared to 7,000 in the same period last year. At a small pier called el-Borg, hundreds of families had gathered Friday, hoping to identify the bodies of their loved ones. Women screamed and relatives pushed and shoved while swarming the ambulances heading to the hospital.

148 bodies retrieved in migrant boat tragedy ROSETTA (EGYPT), SEP 23 (AP): The bodies of 148 people had been pulled from the waters off the Egyptian coast by Friday, three days after a boat carrying hundreds of migrants capsized in the Mediterranean while attempting to head to Europe. Wahdan el-Sayyed, the spokesman of the Nile Delta province of Beheira, provided the latest figures and told The Associated Press that the search operation was ongoing. Dozens more are feared dead, Mohammed Sultan, the governor of Beheira, said earlier. Many of them are believed to be children and women who were unable to swim away when the boat sank. An AP reporter near the Nile Delta city of Rosetta saw between 20 to 30 bodies brought in by fishing boats early Friday morning and delivered to a group of waiting ambulances at the coast guard pier. Pictures posted on social networking sites showed dozens of bodies lined up in black plastic bags, and others floating near wooden fishing boats. Authorities have struggled to give accurate figures for the number of people on board the capsized vessel. The boat was located nearly 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) from the Nile Delta port city

season, but Klopp believes it would be unhelpful for the home crowd to get too edgy too soon if an early goal fails to materialise against a side Liverpool are expected to beat. “So many people think we have a problem against bus parking,” Klopp said. “I cannot remember a lot of space in the games we played against Chelsea or Tottenham (a 1-1 draw). “We have to find solutions,” the German added. “I think we all can improve - the team, coaches, manager and the crowd. “If you create chances against Chelsea, it’s positive.

If you miss, it’s still positive because you created a chance against Chelsea. If you miss a chance against Burnley, it’s seen as a negative. “That’s what we have to learn. No football game is easy. It is not easier against Hull, why should it be easier?” Liver pool have been thrilling going forward but not always so convincing at the other end and Klopp has a dilemma over his number one. Postiga played just 74 minutes last year before being ruled out with a hamstring injury. The Portuguese marksman bagged a brace in ATK’s 3-2 win over eventual champions Chennaiyin FC, whom they play in their opening game at the Rabindra Sarovar Stadium here on October 2. Postiga, 34, played for Rio Ave in the second half of the Portuguese Primeira Liga, the country’s top division. In 10 games, he scored five goals to help Rio Ave finished sixth in the league. Postiga has netted 27 times in 72 games for Portugal. “I am thankful for everything you gave me. I hope to play more games and score more goals,” he said. “I played for five months in another club in Portugal. I feel fantastic. I have had a great pre-season.

London, Sep 23 (Agencies): Wayne Rooney refuses to listen to the ‘rubbish’ criticism that has been aimed in his direction in recent months, preferring to focus on doing his best for Manchester United. Rooney’s place in the United starting XI has come under scrutiny in recent weeks with many suggesting that he should be dropped in favour of Marcus Rashford. United have lost three of their last four games and, while they ended their losing streak in the EFL Cup tie against Northampton, Rooney’s performance once again attracted negative comments. The 30-year-old is aware of the criticism but insists he is only concerned about listening to what his coaches and team-mates have to say. “I think I’ve had that my whole career - a little bit more of late, I think, but that’s football,” Rooney told MUTV.

NEW DELHI, Sep 23 (PTI): India were on Thursday drawn to play New Zealand at home in their next Davis Cup tie in the Asia/Oceania Group I competition, which is scheduled for February 3-5. It was after beating New Zealand 3-2 in an away tie that India qualified for the World Group Play-offs in 2015 season. India are back in the Asia Oceania zone after being whitewashed by five-time champions Spain in the World Group play-off tie. India captain Anand Amritraj said he’s hoping that top singles players, who have missed the last two ties due to injuries, will be back in the team. “It’s good for us that we are playing at home. Let’s hope that Yuki Bhambri and Somdev Devvarman get back to playing in the side. It’s still a few months away. I will discuss with AITA about the surface and venue soon,” Amritraj told PTI. Meanwhile, it has been learnt that Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association is interested in hosting the tie and is expected to send a letter to AITA, expressing intent to host the first round tie. In that case, Pune will be the venue. India have not lost to New Zealand in the last five ties played between the two teams. They emerged victorious in 2015, 2012, 2004, 2003, 2002 while losing three ties (1978, 1976, 1975) out of eight played so far.

Kolkata Sep 23 (IANS): Indian Super League (ISL) outfit Atletico de Kolkata’s Canadian striker Ian Hume on Friday targeted scoring a hatful of goals, being excited at the prospect of forming a lethal attacking partnership with the city-based football franchise’s marquee player Portugal’s Helder Postiga. “I hope me and Helder can hit the ground running. Last year he got two goals in one game before being injured out for the rest of the tournament. If he can add to that and I can continue in the same vein then it could be a great season for us,” Hume, who netted 11 times last season helping ATK reach the semi-finals, told reporters a press meet here. Along with Hume and Postiga, India centre-back Arnab Mondal and co-owner Sanjiv Goenka were also present at the launch of the official slogan of ATK named “Amar Buke ATK” and its theme song this season, sung by playback singer Papon. “Last season Helder was not there for much of the

tour of the United States. That gave Simon Mignolet the chance to start the season in goal - but now Karius is fit again, making his debut on Tuesday as Liverpool won 3-0 at Derby in the third round of the EFL Cup. “If I make a decision for the next game, it’s not that this is how it is for the next five years,” said Klopp, giving nothing away. “It’s a decision at a high level because I’m really happy with both of them. You’ll have to wait and see.” Adam Lallana and Georginio Wijnaldum will return to the squad after being rested for the Derby game to allow them to recover from knocks. Daniel Sturridge has also returned to training after a recent minor injury problem. These are uncertain times for Hull, who remain in continued takeover talks, while after almost a week’s deliberation, Mike Phelan is still to accept an offer to become manager on a fulltime basis after a successful two-month spell in caretaker charge since the departure of Steve Bruce. Stephen Clemence wants to see the managerial situation resolved as quickly as possible, and Hull’s reserve team coach said: “As far as I’m aware, there’s nothing new at present, but I think we’re all fed up talking about it. “The staff want him as the manager, the players do and the fans do. We just need to get it sorted.”

LIVERPOOL, Sep 23 (Agencies): Liverpool are building momentum after three successive wins in league and cup but manager Jurgen Klopp is pleading for patience when his team face Hull City at Anfield on Saturday. The score did not change after as rain rendered the field unplayable. New Zealand are trailing by 166 runs. The match could not be re-started in the absence of a super-sopper. To make up for the lost time, the third day’s play will begin at 9:15 am tomorrow to ensure that 98 overs are bowled.

Before the downpour, however, the Kiwis exhibited steely resolve with Williamson and Latham combining for a 117-run stand for the second wicket. Williamson took 115 balls for his 66, that had seven boundaries in it while southpaw Latham faced 137 balls, hitting five shots to the fence in the process. The two Kiwi batsmen were hardly troubled by either Ravichandran Ashwin or Ravindra Jadeja on a

Kidambi Srikanth

Tokyo, Sep 23 (PTI): Kidambi Srikanth fought hard before going down in a gruelling three-game men’s singles quarterfinal against experienced German Marc Zweibler competition to draw curtains on the Indian challenge at the Japan Super Series badminton tournament on Friday. The eighth seed, playing his first tournament after the Rio Olympics, suffered a narrow 21-18 14-21 19-21 loss to World No. 15 Marc in a 58minute battle. Srikanth came into the match with a 2-1 head-to-head record, having beaten Marc the last time at the China Open but

there was hardly anything to differentiate the two players as both fought tooth and nail. Srikanth had to push himself hard right in the middle of the opening game when after an initial neck and neck battle he found himself five points adrift of Marc at 10-15. But the Indian changed gears and reeled off eight straight points from 12-16 to surpass the German. Marc saved two game points before Srikanth grabbed the opening game to be 1-0 up. In the second game, Marc broke off at 6-6 and kept his nose ahead despite some spirited fight from Srikanth to level the score at 1-1. In the decider, it was another gruelling battle but Srikanth managed to keep himself ahead for most part after opening up a 6-2 lead. However, Marc produced a rearguard action to not only catch up with the Indian at 16-16 but turn the tables at 18-16. Marc managed to grab two match points at 20-18. Srikanth saved one but the German sealed it at the next opportunity.

NEW DELHI, Sep 23 (PTI): In a bid to give increased recognition to their achievements, the medallists from the Rio Paralympics will be recommended for the Padma awards this year by the Sports Ministry. “Sports Ministry will recommend the names of our star #Paralympians to the Ministry of Home Affairs for the prestigious #PadmaAwards,” Sports Minister Vijay Goel announced on his Twitter page. India won four medals two gold, a silver and a bronze - at the Paralympics in Rio earlier this month. Thangavelu Mariyappan (High Jump) and Devendra Jhajharia (Javelin Throw) won gold medals, while Deepa Malik (Shot put) had claimed a silver. Varun Singh Bhati (High Jump) had won a bronze medal. The para-athletes were welcomed warmly on their return from Rio and were hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence.

Green Park track which did not offer much assistance to the spinners. Except for the last few overs, the two Kiwi batsmen remained untroubled even though they survived a few appeals and two specific incidents where they almost lost their wickets. Williamson swept Ashwin often and also stayed on the backfoot, waiting for the balls to decide his stroke. Latham also remained solid against both the spinners and pacers. The visiting captain survived when he tried to sweep Ashwin, missed the ball that hit him on the back of the helmet, taking off the flap, which hit the stumps but bails were not dislodged. It happened in the 32nd over when he was on an individual score of 39. With strike bowlers not making any impact, Kohli asked part-timer Murali Vijay to bowl his offbreaks. He almost got Latham on a full toss, which the batsman missed and was struck on the pads, but umpire shot down the desperate vociferous appeal for LBW. This was after Murali beat both the left-handed batsmen and wicker-keeper Saha with a turning ball to concede four byes. There was more drama in the next over when Latham swept Jadeja from outside off stump and the inside edge bounced off his shoes to forward short leg fielder. However, the TV umpire ruled him not out since the ball had touched the helmet grill before KL Rahul caught the ball. 55 teams to take part in AIFF youth league New Delhi Sep 23 (IANS): As many as 55 teams from all over the country will take part in the U-16 youth football league, beginning on Saturday in Kolkata and Shillong simultaneously. The number of teams is the highest so far in any league in India, according to an All India Football Federation (AIFF) release on Friday. Teams from all I-League clubs and two teams from Indian Super League (ISL) franchises along with many academy teams will be fielding their sides for the top honours across 10 zones. The league, which com-

menced last season as the U-15 Youth League, has been refurbished as the U-16 meet keeping in mind the 2017 U-17 World Cup, to be hosted by India. I-League CEO Sunando Dhar said the increase in the numbers highlights the “urge among the clubs to perform”. “The numbers speak. Fifty five teams are participating in the U-16 youth league which is indeed remarkable. It proves the urge among clubs and academies to prove their mettle,” he told www.i-league. org on Friday. “I wish success to all the participating teams. The com-

petition will be intense and may the best team win,” he added. The teams from every zone will play on a home-away basis among themselves in the round robin stage and 16 teams will qualify to the national final round. Those 16 teams will be divided into four groups and the group champions will qualify for the semi-finals which will be followed by the final to decide the champions. Minerva Academy FC, champions from the last edition, have been clubbed with Youngsters Club, Lonestar Kashmir, Real Kashmir and Jammu and Kingdom Bank.

Radwanska, Wozniacki enter Pan Pacific semis

Tokyo, Sep 23 (Agencies): Defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska defeated Rio Olympics gold medallist Monica Puig on Friday to set up a semifinal showdown with Caroline Wozniacki at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. Second-seeded Radwanska, of Poland, smashed eight aces in overpowering the Puerto Rican 6-2 6-3. “In this level of match you have to play well to win by that kind of score,” said Radwanska, who also won this tournament in 2011. “I knew Monica was in great form, winning the gold, but you just have to go on court and play your game. I was serving great today and that helped me a lot.” Wozniacki appears back near her best after a succession of ankle, knee and bicep injuries; reaching the U.S. Open semifinals and continuing that form here. fier Magda Linette 6-4, 6-3. Wozniacki won 79 per cent of points on her first serve, including 90 per cent in the first set. She holds an 8-4 headto-head advantage against Radwanska. “With Caroline, we’ve played so many matches everywhere on every surface, it’s always a great challenge against her,” Radwanska said. “For me she’s still a top-10 player, even though her ranking dropped a bit. Hopefully I can serve just as well against

Serena eyeing WTA Finals IPL not spoiling budding cricketers: McGrath return in Singapore

Wuhan, Sep 23 (IANS): World No.2 Serena Williams is eyeing a return to action at the WTA Finals in Singapore after a nagging shoulder injury ruled her out of the Wuhan Open and the China Open. Serena announced on Friday that due to shoulder injury she will not compete in the upcoming Wuhan Open and the following China Open, reports Xinhua. “I am disappointed that I will not be able to compete at the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open or the China Open due to continuing issues with my right shoulder,” Serena said in a statement. “I have been practising and playing but my shoulder is still not fit for tournament play.” “I wish the tournaments great success and I’m sure the fans will enjoy some great tennis. I am focused on getting ready to compete at the WTA Finals in Singapore.” “I’m tired of playing tournaments unhealthy and

taking losses that I would never lose,” Serena had recently remarked in an interview. Serena has played eight tournaments this year, the fewest she has played in a season since returning from injury in 2011. She has won two titles out of Rome and Wimbledon and finished as runner-up three times, losing to Angelique Kerber at the Australian Open, to Victoria Azarenka at Indian Wells and to Garbine Muguruza at Roland Garros. In an interview wtih CNN, coach Patrick Mouratoglu called it “a bad season for her” adding that Serena has suffered from injury a great deal of the time. “For Serena any other result that is not a title is a bad result. The final at a Grand Slam is a bad result for her. We cannot be satisfied with one Grand Slam [title] and two finals lost,” he said. Serena has competed in nine WTA Finals, carrying home five titles thus far.

Glenn McGrath

New Delhi, Sep 23 (IANS): Popular Twenty20 tournaments like the Indian Premier League (IPL) became a rage across the country as soon as they were introduced, but controversies soon followed. Legendary Australian pacer Glenn McGrath says the new format is not spoiling cricketers, but warns budding sportsmen against gloating over their success. “I don’t feel it (IPL or BBL-Big Bash League) is spoiling budding cricketers. I think the important thing for budding cricketers is to always put in 100 per cent -- to continue to be your best, work hard, don’t ever think you are at the top of your ability, you can

always improve,” McGrath told IANS in an email interview. McGrath, considered one of the greatest bowlers in cricketing history, had, in an earlier interview, blamed quick money for spoiling fast bowlers across the world. Now, he thinks differently. Whether on or off the field, the McGarth saga is inspiring. A member of all three teams that enabled Australia complete a World Cup treble, he also holds the record for the highest number of Test wickets - 563 - by a quickie (average 21.64) in the 124 Tests he played between 1993 and 2007. He also turned out in 250 ODIs, scalping 381 victims. Now, he says he does not “miss playing cricket at all”, since he has “a wonderful family which takes up most of my time, along with the McGrath Foundation in Australia”. He is busy creating a place for himself outside the field of cricket -- be it through his association with wine brand Hardy Wines, handling the MRF Pace Foundation, Chennai, or as the co-founder and president of the

McGrath Foundation, a breast cancer support and education charity he founded with his first wife Jane, who died of the disease in 2008. “Since retirement, I have been given me the opportunity to spend time with my family. I have three children, aged 16, 14 and one. That is what is really important to me. I have also done a little commentating in Australia and am part of the MRF academy in Chennai,” he said. McGrath also said that he is proud to be associated with Hardys because of its history and heritage. “Their consistency and quality when it comes to winemaking has synergy with my cricketing career. So, it made a lot sense for me to represent them, especially in India,” he said, pointing to the country’s booming wine culture. McGrath, who was inducted into ICC Hall of fame in January 2013, said: “There are more people enjoying wine in India, they are interested in exploring new things and I think wine is part of that journey.”

Valencia end La Liga losing streak

Valencia, Sep 23 (IANS): Spanish football club Valencia, under interim coach Salvador Gonzalez, posted their first win of the La Liga, beating Alaves 2-1. After starting the campaign with four straight losses, the hosts looked much improved in the opening minutes of a contest here on Thursday that came barely 48 hours after the firing of manager Pako Ayestaran, reports Efe. By the 15th minute, play shifted in favour of Alaves, who began to dominate the midfield and sharply limit of-

fensive space for Valencia. But one of Valencia’s few forays into Alaves territory proved costly, as the home side went ahead 1-0 in the 28th minute due to an own goal. The gift didn’t provide the expected boost to Valencia’s morale and the visitors continued to dictate the flow of the match, but without producing any chance until. Just before the break, a header from forward Toquero brought the squads level at 1-1. While Valencia started the second half with a lot more intensity, they continued to

suffer from a lack of quality in the final third. The match then settled into a duel between a home side desperate for their first victory and an visiting team content to defend and wait for an opportunity on the counterattack. With three minutes left of regulation time, Valencia were awarded a penalty to Valencia after Zakaria Bakkali went down inside the penalty box. Midfielder Daniel Parejo converted from the spot to make it 2-1 and ensure the victory for Valencia.
