Army, NSCN (K) clash along Indo-Myanmar border area DIMAPUR/NEW DELHI, SEP 27 (NPN/ PTI): The Indian Army on Wednesday claimed that it inflicted “heavy casualties” on the cadres of the NSCN (K) during “retaliatory” fire along the India-Myanmar border on the Nagaland side in the early hours. Informing this through a communiqué, Eastern Command stated that a column of the Indian Army operating along the IndoMyanmar border was fired upon by unidentified rebels of the NSCN (K) around 4.45 am. Sources informed that the clash erupted between 21 (SF) para commandos and NSCN (K) cadres. Easter n Command said its troops suffered no casualties during the action. “Own troops reacted swiftly and brought down heavily retaliatory fire on insurgents. The insurgents then broke contact and fled from the spot. As per inputs, a large number of casualties were suffered by the insurgents. Own troops suffered no casualties,” the statement added.

It, however, did not tell about the number of insurgents killed or injured in the attack. The Army also asserted that Indian troops “did not cross the international border”. Responding to a question at a cabinet briefing about the incident, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said, “There are no two opinions that Myanmar is a friendly country. Whatever information we get, we will inform you about it.” However, PTI reports said that a Facebook post by Isak Sumi, a senior functionary of the NSCN(K) who is also on the ‘most wanted list’ of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), said the encounter occurred on the outskirt of Langkhu village located inside Myanmar occupied Naga area, 10-15 km away from Indo-Myanmar border. “The encounter started around 3 AM when the elite unit of the Naga Army detected a column of Indian Army approaching their temporary make shift camp in the outskirt of Lang-

khu village located inside Myanmar occupied Naga area, 10-15 kms away from Indo-Myanmar border. The exchange was continuing till the time of filing this report,” said Sumi, who is referred to as the PRO of the NSCN by the NIA on its website updated last year. He claimed that “three Indian soldiers were killed and an unconfirmed number injured but there was no casualty or injury on the Naga Army”. His post states that he is currently based in Yangon in Myanmar. Army sources have maintained that it was “not a surgical strike”. Its response came hours after Sumi’s post. The Easter n Command also tweeted, “Repor ts of casualties to #IndianArmy personnel factually incorrect. Firefight occurred along IndoMyanmar border at 0445 hrs today @adgpi.” In June 2015, the Army had conducted a similar operation against banned insurgent groups following the killing of 20 soldiers in Manipur.

ther side could fool the other, being frank and brutally honest on all contentious issues would be in the interest of both entities.” Despite the differences, WC said that Ravi hoped that the Centre and the WC would work as partners and deliver the best political solution for both the GoI and the Naga people. attempt on the life of L Doulo allegedly by NSCN (K) and attack on a Naga family by non-Naga youths at Chumukedima. According to the signatories, the joint coordination meeting was convened as citizens of Dimapur have been subjected to a number of criminal acts such as rape, killing, abduction, looting, extortion, intimidation or rampant taxation and other anti-social activities committed by underground factions and illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. In this regard, the NCD has appealed to all the factions to “take off the culture of killing, extortion, intimidation and hatred and put on the culture of love and harmony.” On influx of illegal migrants, the NCD stated that the state government, to give effect to provisions of the inner-line permit regulation

and for due enforcement, should frame guideline from time to time that ILP was required to be obtained by nonindigenous person to enter Nagaland. in Nagaland gains more support

DIMAPUR, SEP 27 (NPN): Association of Kohima Municipal Wards Panchayat (AKMWP), Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) and Kohima Baptist Pastor Fellowship (KBPF) have “unanimously” extended support to the public resolutions adopted on August 25, 2017 ACAUT mass rally in Dimapur, which demanded the passage of Lokayukta Bill in the state Assembly by September 2017. In a press release, AKMWP president, Neibulie Kiewhuo, and vice president, Khrielakuo Sekhose, stated that the decision to extend support was taken at joint consultative meeting of AKMWP, KBPF and ACAUT held in Kohima on September 26. The meeting, which was hosted by AKMWP, noted that corruption cannot be wiped out with a magic wand, but there was a “short cut” to check corruption, which is setting up Lokayukta in Nagaland. Further, the house observed that in a state government where there was no opposition and was a party-less government, a mechanism such as Lokayukta, which

was an independent institution to check corruption headed by a retired supreme court judge or a retired high court judge as the chairman, must be immediately constituted in the state of Nagaland. “Successive government will come and go, but when this Lokayukta is once appointed, it will stay whether a government is there or not,” the house maintained. The speakers at the meeting, which held on two-point agenda -- Corruption and Clean Election -dwelt on random unchecked practice of corruption, violating every system of guidelines and procedural function of both the Centre and the state. With regard to Clean Election, the house opined that any amount of planning or circulating DOs and DON’Ts through print media was not helping much. Therefore, the house suggested that the only option was to “Walk the Talk”. The meeting maintained that even as the NBCC was spearheading the clean election campaign, every civil society organisation such as NGOs, (Cont’d on p-8) churches,
