Indefinite economic bandh on
Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, SEP 29 (NPN): In the absence of any positive response from the State government to their demands, truckers under five truckers’ associations began their “indefinite economic blockade” from Tuesday morning. The indefinite economic bandh was called by Dimapur District Truck Owners’ Association, Dimapur Truck Drivers’ Union, Dimapur District Truck Drivers’ Welfare Trade Union, Lahorijan & Khatkhati Truckers’ Welfare Society and Bokajan Truck Owners’ Association. Banners and slogans that read: “Stop extortion in Nagaland”; “Stop illegal multiple taxation system in Nagaland”; “We want justice for late Jiten Gogoi”, etc, were hung at the New field Check gate. Police sources said that initially till afternoon several trucks entering Dimapur were provided armed escorts but by evening, no truck arrived. The sources said some volunteers in Karbi Anglong had reportedly stopped Dimapur-bound trucks from proceeding further.

The blockade has brought movement of all trucks to and from Nagaland’s commercial hub to a grinding halt between inter-state check gates at Dillai and New Field. The truck associations had demanded compensation for the family of the driver-Jiten Gogoi-who was shot dead in the wee hours of September 22 near IMC Hall Dimapur. They have also demanded that the district and state authorities resolve various problems faced by them in their ultimatum dated September 24. Meanwhile, speaking with Nagaland Post, Commissioner of Police (CP) Dimapur, Rothihu Tetseo disclosed that investigation was on over the killing of the truck driver and police have
identified the prime suspect besides interrogation of around 19 persons and also detained some underground cadres. He expressed the hope that the case would be cracked soon once the prime suspect was arrested. Tetseo also said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed for the purpose, headed by additional SP (crime). He also condemned the killing and said it “unfortunate” and which should not have occurred at this juncture, especially when the Naga peace talks were at the final stage. Regarding providing police armed escort to trucks till Dimapur town/Chümoukedima check gate, the CP said it was being provided even before the police commissionerate was
established. He also said police have been and will continue to provide any needed assistance. Recalling his meeting with representatives of the truckers’ associations on September 26, Tetseo said an appeal was made to the associations to observe their indefinite stir peacefully. Asked about complaints of extortions, Tetseo said 150 extortion cases were registered last year and that 160 persons were arrested under suo motu cases and investigations were also on, in which the police were complainants. The CP further claimed that not a single individual complaint had been received regarding extortion, and so urged upon public to cooperate. (Cont’d on p-8)

NPCC accuses PDA of double talk on solution DIMAPUR, SEP 29 (NPN): In a sharp attack, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) Tuesday accused the ruling PDA government of having turned “anti-Nagaland” and “once again successful” in delaying the deadline of solution. NPCC president K Therie said the “anti-solution forces are once again successful in delaying the dateline” by speaking for early solution before the people, but before the government of India they fight for delay in the name of inclusiveness. “I do not know how long it will be delayed again. Nagaland state government will know better,” Therie said, adding that 23 years of negotiations was itself enough. Stating that both the state and centre knew each other “perhaps more than husband and wife”, Therie said that the government of India had also spelt out “what is givable and what is not givable.” Assuring that the Congress stood by the demand of the stakeholders,

Consultations on top gear among various stakeholders Correspondent

JLF mulls inclusive meet: State Assembly speaker and chairman of the Joint Legislators’ Forum (JLF) on Naga political issue, Sharingain Longkumer disclosed that the forum was planning to hold an “inclusive” consultative meeting with all stakeholders. Maintaining that the Naga political issue was dear and important for the young Naga generations of the state, Sharingain hoped that leaders will make it convenient to resolve the issue and look forward to a new future if talks are resolved. Sharingain said that the JLF had recently held a consultative meeting with the Working Committee of the NNPGs. However, he said that the forum was yet to hold such meeting with the NSCN (I-M). Since NSCN (I-M), as the stakeholder of the Naga political issue, was currently engaged in talks with the Centre in Delhi, Sharingain was hopeful that as time permits, the JLF would hold a meeting with the NSCN (I-M) soon. Meanwhile, informed sources disclosed that chief minister Neiphiu Rio held a consultative meeting the representatives of the 14 apex tribal hohos of Nagaland during which he briefed them about his recent meeting with union

Solution: LPO rejects authorisation of LH DIMAPUR, SEP 29 (NPN): Lotha Public Organisation (LPO) has rejected outright the authorisation granted by Lotha frontal organisations to Lotha Hoho (LH) to represent the tribe in all consulta-

tions, decision making and signing of any document related to Naga political settlement. Reacting to a statement issued in this regard by LH chairman Mhondamo Ovung and jt. secretary Amos Odyuo, LPO alleged that the current hoho was an “unmandated, unapproved and unrecognized self-styled organisation” and did not have consensus from Lotha tribe. LPO chairman Sulanthung Humtsoe and vice-president Phyobemo Odyuo in a release further alleged that the two hoho leaders were only representing their own personal and individual interest, and not the interest of the Lotha people. They asserted that the current LH had no moral authority or devoir rights to decide or pass any resolution relating to Naga
political movement as the Lothas had their own Naga national workers to represent on behalf of their community. They said the meeting of all Lotha organisations on Naga political issue held at Wokha and convened by an “unmandated organisation” on September 23 was a mockery as it did not reach any consensus and did not the confidence of all “sensible and right thinking” Lothas. LPO recalled that then LH under the dynamic and visionary leadership of Nyanbemo Ngullie had during a general meeting on April 19 and 20, 2002 passed a resolution that Lotha tribe would welcome early settlement of the Indo- Naga political issue, provided the settlement was honourable and acceptable to the Nagas.
Stating that the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has come into force with immediate effect in the districts of Kohima and Kiphire, Aier said the code would be applicable in all areas under the two Assembly constituencies. He added that MCC would be applicable to all candidates, political parties and the State government, besides the Union government for the districts concerned. Sharing the broad guidelines issued by ECI while conducting the bypolls in the backdrop of COVID-19 pandemic, Aier said PPE kits, hand wash and hand sanitizers would be provided to all officials and electors. During the polling, he said the voters would have to come with masks, while hand gloves would be given to press the EVM button. (Cont’d on p-8)

Bring Assam CM into probe net of police exam paper leak: KMSS
Guwahati, Sep 29 ( P T I ) : Pe a s a n t b o dy Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) on Monday demanded that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who holds the Home portfolio, be brought into the ambit of investigation in the Assam Police recruitment question paper leak scam. Addressing a press meet here, KMSS president Bhasco DeSaikia said that a probe by the CBI or a sitting High Courtjudge, and not by the state police, is necessary in the case as, according to him, the entire scandal is the result of a “nexus between the CM, BJP and the RSS”. “One thing is getting clear that many top police officials are involved in this scam. The police come under the Home department, which is held by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. So, he should also be brought under the ambit of the
Bhasco DeSaikia probe,” Saikia said. “As per our information, three parties are involved in this scam. These are Dispur (Secretariat), Hengerabari (BJP headquarters) and Keshavdham (RSS state office),” he alleged. KMSS’ jailed Adviser Akhil Gogoi had on Saturday claimed that the question paper leak scam is much bigger than the Vyapam scandal that rocked Madhya Pradesh a few years back, and alleged that the BJP-led state
government is involved in it. The Vyapam scam refers to irregularities in exams held by the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board, also called Vyavasayik Pareeksha Mandal or Vyapam, for admission in professional courses and state services. On September 20, the question paper of the written examination for 597 posts of unarmed subinspectors in Assam Police got leaked and the test was cancelled minutes after it had commenced. Around 66,000 candidates had appeared for the written test in 154 centres across the state. Former deputy inspector general of police P K Dutta and senior BJP leader Diban Deka were the key accused in the case and both are absconding. A total of 20 people have so far been arrested in this connection.

GUWAHATI, SEP 29 (PTI): PSU major Oil India Ltd (OIL) on Tuesday said it will likely take overseas experts two more months to kill its damaged well at Baghjan in Assam, where gas has been gushing out uncontrollably for the last 126 days. Addressing a press conference after the company’s annual general meeting, OIL Chairman and MD Sushil Chandra Mishra said it has started taking action against employees responsible for the mishap, which has killed three persons. “The fire at the wellhead has been doused after we successfully diverted the gas on September 13. We are in the process of completely controlling the well and for that, a snubbing unit from Canada is likely to arrive within next three-four weeks,” he said. After the arrival of experts of the Alert Disaster Control with their equipment, it will take another 3-4 weeks to control and kill the well, Mishra said, adding, “a total of about eight weeks will be required to kill the well from now”. The company has spent around Rs 70 crore so far towards foreign experts in their efforts to douse the flame and control the well, the top OIL official said. On August 17, OIL had achieved the first successful step towards dousing the
Tuesday. The seeds were distributed under the area expansion programme of vegetables of MIDH 2020-21 to meet the emergent requirement of the prevailing situation due to COVID-19. The state horticulture and soil conservation department has selected 5940 farmers to cover 2970 hectares for this purpose. Addressing the occasion,Singh said that the state government was
blaze when it could place the Blow Out Preventer, a very heavy metal cover weighing several tonnes, in its third attempt at the mouth of the damaged gas well. Assam Commerce and Industry Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary had said in the assembly on September 2 that a team of experts from Canada were on their way to Baghjan and it will take them two more months to douse the flame. Asked about the findings of the internal probe on theworst industrial disaster of Assam, the CMD said a preliminary report has been submitted and the company has initiated action against “some people”. He, however, declined to share details and appealed toeveryone to wait for another four-five weeks for the investigations by a number of statutory bodies of the state and central governments. The company is at present reviewing and modifying its entire list of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) on account of modernisation, and changing conditions to boost the safety measures, he said. Talking about the loss incurred due to the Baghjantragedy, Mishra said, “The total gas loss has been 80,000 standard cubic meters. The loss due to the specific well is Rs 6 crore, while forced closures and blockades by
locals have cost us Rs 179 crore.” OIL also lost production of 84,000 metric tonnes of crude oil due to protests after the blowout took place on May 27. He said 22 wells were shut down by agitators in theBaghjan area at one point of time, but all are operational now except the damaged one. Mishra said the company will drill another well nearthe damaged one for producing gas, and look for more production in the area in future to compensate for the loss. “We have also initiated some austerity measures in thecompany. We are trying to reduce our expenses in the next one year to make up for the loss,” he said. On OIL’s internal Crisis Management Team to handlesuch blowout situations, Mishra accepted that the company once had a CMT, but it was not very active. “We have reactivated the CMT and this will be a priority area and a challenge. However, this blowout was so big that even the combined effort of ONGC and OIL teams has not been able to control it,” he said. Regarding compensation to the people near the Baghjanwell, Mishra said the company has deposited the money estimated by the Tinsukia district administration and theNational Green Tribunal after surveying 2,756 families.

NLSF appeals for smooth conduct of exam DIMAPUR: Nagaland Law Students’ Federation (NLSF) has appealed to the state government to immediately intervene and ensure smooth conduct of scheduled LL.B examinations. In a representation addressed to the chief secretary, NLSF president C Talimoa and education secretary Shenti Simon C said that with the tentative examination for 1st, 3rd and 5th Semester LL.B (offline mode) scheduled to start from October 5, 2020, the safety of students should not be compromised at any cost. The federation stated that COVID-19 pandemic has af-
fected the academic activity of the students of three law colleges in the state—Kohima Law College, Mokokchung Law college and City Law College, Dimapur—as semester activities were hampered and examinations remained uncertain putting the future of the students at stake. NLSF also stated that many students could face difficulties in numerous ways due to COVID-19 restrictions. Economic strangulation
I
t’s time that society, the district authorities of Dimapur and the state government take stock of the recurrence of ‘economic bandh’ imposed on Dimapur by various associations. These bandhs may be an extreme step compelled by situations or circumstances under the plea of seeking justice but such a step is certainly not conducive for creating the climate of progress. Bandhs invite huge losses in terms of trade and also make people suffer. The current 3-day bandh called by five transport associations-Dimapur District Truck Owners' Association, Dimapur Truck Drivers' Union, Dimapur District Truck Drivers' Welfare Trade Union, Lahorijan & Khatkhati Truckers' Welfare Society and Bokajan Truck Owners' Association- had the genesis in the shocking incident in the wee hours of September 22 when a driver of a local truck and hailing from Assam, was shot dead by unknown miscreants. The five associations had issued an ultimatum on the district and state government to nab those involved; ensure safety and security of truck drivers entering Dimapur from syndicates controlled by various elements and also rid Dimapur of the menace of unabated collections of every form. These demands may seem ordinary given the fact that the district authorities and the state government are supposed to be ensuring rule of law . However, for whatever reasons, the situation hasn’t changed during the decade despite huge public outrage against such activities that spilled over into rallies across the state. Thus, the demand of the truck associations is justified but the ‘indefinite economic bandh’ imposed on Dimapur poses a serious challenge on the people of the state and a slap on the face of the constitutionally mandated government. It also appears that the state government has left the district authorities on their own, to tackle the crisis. When such a serious issue as ‘economic bandh’ was threatened and which will certainly affect the state, the government ought to have responded immediately in order to avert the impending bandh. The complaint made by the truckers is neither rare nor new but a regular feature that has plagued the progress and development of Dimapur and the state. It is about illegal and multiple taxations imposed at inter-state check gates at Dimapur and many unauthorised and illegal toll gates or toll collection centres across the length and breadth of Dimapur. These activities are in addition to imposition of “personal/income tax, goods tax, shop tax, royalty tax” etc. Even as recently as September 13, two truck owners associations of Karbi Anglong- Lahorijan and Khatkhati Truck Owners Welfare Society Assam and Bokajan Truck Owners Association Assam- had threatened to stop allowing their trucks to ply to Dimapur and beyond unless trucks are provided with security escort till their destinations, by the district administration and state government. It may be pointed out that in 2019, the Gauhati High Court had explicitly and elegantly held, that road and rail blockades are variants of bandh, and thus illegal and unconstitutional. It said those involved should be prosecuted under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, National Highways Act, 1956 and the Railways Act, 1989. Conversely, the moot question is, what about those in authority who are responsible for dereliction of responsibility in preventing or averting economic bandhs?
DailyDevotion The Awareness of the Call
…for necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel! —1 Corinthians 9:16 We are inclined to forget the deeply spiritual and supernatural touch of God. If you are able to tell exactly where you were when you received the call of God and can explain all about it, I question whether you have truly been called. The call of God does not come like that; it is much more supernatural. The realization of the call in a person’s life may come like a clap of thunder or it may dawn gradually. But however quickly or slowly this awareness comes, it is always accompanied with an undercurrent of the supernatural— something that is inexpressible and produces a “glow.” At any moment the sudden awareness of this incalculable, supernatural, surprising call that has taken hold of your life may break through— “I chose you…” (John 15:16). The call of God has nothing to do with salvation and sanctification. You are not called to preach the gospel because you are sanctified; the call to preach the gospel is infinitely different. Paul describes it as a compulsion that was placed upon him. If you have ignored, and thereby removed, the great supernatural call of God in your life, take a review of your circumstances. See where you have put your own ideas of service or your particular abilities ahead of the call of God. Paul said, “…woe is me if I do not preach the gospel!” He had become aware of the call of God, and his compulsion to “preach the gospel” was so strong that nothing else was any longer even a competitor for his strength. If a man or woman is called of God, it doesn’t matter how difficult the circumstances may be. God orchestrates every force at work for His purpose in the end. If you will agree with God’s purpose, He will bring not only your conscious level but also all the deeper levels of your life, which you yourself cannot reach, into perfect harmony.

Post-mortem
Advantage agricultural reforms: A turning point for farmers
A
fter retirement from the army, my father took up farming at Village Shahpur, on the Pinjore-Nalagarh Road, in Haryana. After every wheat harvest, my mother used to cart the wheat herself on the tractor to the Chandigarh mandi. She used to wait for hours, sitting in the tractor, in the hot sun at the mercy of the 'Arthiyas' at the Mandi to purchase the wheat. It was harassment of the highest degree; the arthiyas would always blackmail the farmers. These arthiyas had converted the mandis into dens of monopoly. The mechanism which was created to protect the farmers ended up throttling them. Not much effort was made in developing any infrastructure for collection and the farmers were always at the receiving end. With the passing of the momentous Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Fa-
cilitation) Act, 2020 and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, the position will now change in favour of the farmers who will be no longer be at the mercy of the middle-men and arthiyas. The Modi government is on the path of transforming farmers into entrepreneurs with better incomes and quality of life. These reforms will greatly benefit farmers, processors and also the consumers. The reforms lay down stringent safeguards to protect the farmers from any blackmail or malpractices and will ensure competition and more efficiency in the market system and also give the freedom of choice to the farmers to sell their produce any-where in the country, since the country will now be one market. There will be competition to arthiyas who will now be in no position to
fleece the farmers, who will now have several avenues to sell their produce. There will be backward linkages with the food processing industry. Farmers will now be able to plan their investments in the shape of contracts with companies for contract farming, providing crop advisories and inputs with an assured buy back at assured prices. The Modi Government had already enforced a Rs 6,685 crore scheme for creation of 10,000 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPO) and recently created a 1 lakh crore Agricultural Infrastructure Fund. Farmer Producer Organizations will give bargaining powers to farmers and capacitate them to reap the economies of scale. The Agricultural Infrastructure Fund will enable them to invest in farm infrastructure and acquire better equipment for achieving better yields. The Government will also assist in promotion
Triumph of the conservatives
D
efying stiff opposition and threats from the obstructionist Democrats and Liberals, President Donald Trump finally nominated Amy Coney Barrett (ACB), a leading voice of the conservatives, to replace Late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg (RBG) as a new Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS). With a confirmation vote in a current Republican-majority Senate a matter of time and formality, the conservatives will now holds an unprecedented 6-3 advantage over the liberals in a 9-members Bench of Justices in the SCOTUS. This nomination of another conservative justice for the SCOTUS will reshape American politics and the world for decades to come as the interpretation by the highest court of the country of some high-stake issues confronting not just America but the human society as a whole will happen under the firm control of the conservatives. The stake is high for humanity as SCOTUS and its decision matters massively in directing the course of American history. It is this institution that abolished the right to pray in schools in 1962 severely affecting religious liberty and passed an infamous Roe v Wade ruling in 1973 that grant abortion rights in the country as a result of which during that last four decades since this ruling an estimated 30 million lives have been destroyed. The privilege of the citizens under the first amendment which protects individual’s right to life and religious liberty and the second amendment granting the right to self-defence will now be strengthen as these will be defended and will block any attempts in future to reinterpret these privileges. Abolishing these privileges of the citizens is the longstanding agenda of the liberals, and instead they seek to grant more power to government to regulates and dictate the life of an individuals. The conservative majority in the SCOTUS will help in the coming decades not only in defending conservative values in America but in promoting it through out the world. An extremely powerful woman, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg was at the centre stage of American politics for almost three decades and during which the antilife politicians and activists attained immense powers. Republican Representative from Georgia Doug Collins on her death tweets: “RIP to more than 30 million innocent babies that have been murdered during the decades that Ruth Bader Ginsberg defended pro-abortion laws”. Indeed Roe v Wade ruling
made a remarkable inroad in the country during her times. Such was the tragic and contested legacy she left behind in the world. She was part of the bitter ideological divide that torn the nation between those who value life and those who celebrate destroying life under the guise of “choice” and between those who champion religious liberty and those who worship government and use it to trample people’s right to life and religion. While promoting liberal cause, the biggest mistake of RBG was her refusal to accept the fact that time was running out for her. If she wants her legacy to continue she should have quit during Obama’s presidency itself considering her advancing years and health issue that she was facing at the time. The then President would have enough time to nominate a Justice of her choice to replace her and continue her legacy. Now the liberals cannot complain that the current President did not choose a new Justice of their choice. And it’s no surprising that the Democrats and its cohort had to resorts to all sort of dirty politics and unconstitutional means to block the President from discharging his constitutional obligation of nominating her successor. The most ridiculous thing that the Democrats did is the citing of RBG’s last wish to obstruct the President from nominating new Justice: that RBG wishes not to appoint her successor until the new term of President begins. Unfortunately that is not how new Justice for the SCOTUS is appointed. But what are more appalling are the Democrats’ inconsistency, and the way they politicized the wishes of their late leader. Apart from her wish about her potential successor, RBG had more important wishes for her country. That includes her opposition to Democrats’ proposal for increasing the number of Justices in the SCOTUS as “bad idea” and her disapproval of knelling during national anthem as “dumb and disrespectful”. All this does not matter to the Democrats, and they show no interest to work towards fulfilling her wishes. But when it comes to appointing new Justice the wish of Late RBG becomes such a big issue for them. Another baseless argument of the Democrats was the allegation that the President was not following the 2016 precedent where in that election year Obama’s nomination for new Justice of the SCOTUS to replace Late Justice Antonin Scalia was blocked by the then Senate. The appointment of a new SCOTUS Justice fol-
lowed a simple constitutional process. Article 2 Section 2 of the Constitution of the United States empowers the President to nominate a new Justice and present to the Senate for confirmation. In other words, for a new Justice, the President nominates and the Senate confirm. Nominating a new Justice for the SCOTUS is in fact among the most important constitutional obligation for the President. The President’s role here is more of obligation than an exercise of authority, and Donald Trump’s act of nominating Amy Coney Barrett without delay is nothing more than discharging his constitutional obligation. The same process was followed in 2016 which permit Obama to name his own nominee but his nominee was rejected by the Senate. And as Democrats are left with no options to block the President from nominating new Justice, they began to resort to mob and intimidation tactics threatening to change the constitution that would suit to their agenda and even went to the extent of threatening to “burn down” the Congress/Constitution if the President goes ahead with the nomination. Democrats seem to be on a mission for creating a rogue state and send strong message to the world about how the nature of their rule would be if they regain power. Nevertheless, the conservatives’ consolidation in the SCOTUS will able to control this Democrats onslaught. Amy Coney Barrett represents the best of the conservatives in the midst of the world of turmoil. Emerge under the shadow of Late Justice Antonin Scalia, a legendary conservative jurist, ACB has a brilliant records of defending life and constitution. For her, all lives, including black and the unborn, matters unlike those anti-life protesters/activists in the street who are shouting “black lives matter” but cruelly endorsing murders of unborn babies. The right to life and religious liberty are two inalienable rights of every human being that make life worthwhile and meaningful. Taking away these rights will make human being cease to be a human being. In the words of President Donald Trump these rights comes “not from government but from God”. It is therefore the moral obligation of the government to defend these rights on behalf on the people. And the good news for humanity is that the conservative-majority SCOTUS will be defending and promoting these rights in the coming decades. Dr. Nsungbemo Ezung Wokha, Nagaland
and provision of technology and advice as per the market demand to achieve better quality, quantity and profitability. With a large number of farmers registered under each FPO, farmers can enter in agreements with leading companies for better terms and conditions and, consequently, better incomes. The agricultural reforms, coupled with analyzing market trends and demands, will empower the farmers to shift to growing crops and fruits with increasing demand in lieu of or in addition to what they are already producing -- a great step to achieve an Atamanirbhar agriculture. The farmers will also get an opportunity to linkup with agri-businesses who will procure directly from the farmers and be able to run their operations effectively, eliminate system inefficiencies and reduce costs which will further result in higher farmer income as also a concomitant development
of agri-businesses. Greater diversification and innovation in business models like farmer management services, digital market places, warehousing and quality centers will attract investment and improve productivity, reduce costs and post-harvest wastages. Japan had, decades ago, treated agriculture like industry. Now we too shall be able to do likewise as market reforms will attract private capital inflow to give a fillip to the rural economy as also sectors like logistics service providers, warehouses operations and processing. Infusing technology in agriculture will lead to the much needed metamorphosis in Indian agriculture. Hence, using international best practices, relevant to us, India will emerge as a key factor in global food supply chains and a food export reservoir of the world in the future - the success of PM Modi's vision of Atmanirb-
har Bharat. Even though just 6 to 8 per cent of farmers in India benefit from the government minimum support price operations, the Prime Minister has reassured farmers that government purchase of their produce coupled with the Minimum Support Price mechanism will continue. The government has finally unshackled the clique of people exploiting the farmers. It is therefore clear that the so-called farmer agitations have been driven by vested interests; the gullible farmers are being misled by unholy alliances to agitate against these landmark reforms which are meant to benefit them and propel them into a new era of agricultural development. In fact, it is only after these historic reforms come into play will the lives of the farmers see a new sunrise of modernization and prosperity in a New India. R. K. Pachnanda (IANS)
The Global Naga Forum
(Forum for Nagas across borders) The Forum: The name of the forum is ‘The Global Naga Forum.’ It is a platform of Nagas from different walks of life living in different parts of the world. We are bind by our common aspiration and the desire to work for our people and the future. Through this discussion and dialogue among us, we wish to contribute towards achieving the political aspiration of our right to self-determination. The Objective: The objective of the forum is to; 1. Amplify the voice and stor y of the Naga struggle through various mediums and media. 2. Connect the Nagas across tribes and borders and also to the world through our story. Our story: The Naga story is of resistance and resilience of a people who continue to defend their ancestral land ever since it was affected by colonial expansion and, military expeditions and experiments by both British and India, leaving a chequered history and memory of war ravaging our lives. From the time of our ancestors (1830 onwards) till today we are still battling for our traditional sovereignty and rights over our land and future. Our contiguous land and people of more than 60 tribes with distinct culture and dialects have been split and placed under different political system and administration affecting and impacting our everyday relationship and fellowship. There is no Naga home that has not suffered for resisting a forced occupation. The Movement: The Naga movement started in the form of memorandum (1929, 1946, 1947), resolution (1950, 1957) plebiscite (1951), boycott (1952, 1953) besides continous call for dialogue to both British and India. These democratic expressions of the Naga
people to determine their own destiny was meted with brutality, militarization and repressive Ordinances and Acts, pushing the Nagas to organize into armed resistance. Efforts to establish peace and bring solution through various agreement, peace talks and accords have not been successful and today, the Naga movement is one of the oldest movements the world has. It is also now known for its longest ceasefire in the history of conflict. While the negotiations continue with glitches, there is no clarity on the process, power and the expected outcome of the political talks, the Naga political groups are engaging with the Government of India. But the impact of these protracted conflict, ceasefire and negotiation has cost us more than our homes and lives. It is beginning to affect the way we understand land and freedom. The imposed geographical borders and barriers have started to seep into our minds and conversations allowing differences to work against our collective vision for a free and dignified nation when we should be celebrating our differences as vibrant and distinct people. The Vision: We believe that we have a role and responsibilities towards these dynamics, peace, Justice, and healing in our land. Our collective aspiration to live as one can even in our differences be accomplished by remembering our history as a people and allow that to guide us towards our vision that does not discriminate and oppresses; knows justice; listens to the poorest to plan our national policies; allow youths to grow without being judged; give space to women to plant and practice democracy; let children grow without any form of violence and abuse; let men make fair decisions free from coercion
and prejudice; allow people of different race and religion live peacefully; allow compassion and humanity to grow as a virtue of every citizen. These are not written down but our values and philosophies around our traditional practices that have been passed down to us clearly reveal them, through our songs and stories, our forest and economy organization, and we must reclaim them as a people. The Process: The forum can be instrumental in consistently and strategically advancing our political aspiration and assertion in cohesion with the objective. We can build onto the ongoing efforts and of the past and actively campaign and advocate for our cause through; a. letters, memorandum, and petitions to the various leaders, organizations, and agencies. b. Appeals for solidarity and support from neighbors and struggling peoples. c. Organizing conferences, seminars, and talks on relevant issues. d. Commemoration of Naga historical days: January 10: Memorandum to Simon Commission: May 16: Naga Plebiscite Day, 14 August: Naga Independence Day e. Any other activity the group thinks appropriate with new development and changes. Working Guidelines: 1) There can be two or more coordinators to both moderate and anchor the discussion in the group. 2) In case of any events and programme to be organized a team may be formed for the specific tasks and disband after completion. 3) Every note/ document/ petition to be shared and agreed by the group before going public or viral. Sir,
Covid-19 affect on students
As the world is undergoing the impact of Coronavirus there was lockdown and unlock in student’s life, unlike other days, there is a very new method of learning which is online classes. Lots of poor students do not have access to smartphones, laptops and computers, which causes comparison between the students and some resist as it is strenuous for them to acquire those gadgets. Students are unable to join the class due to unstable network in many areas and some find it difficult to adapt themselves. Not only that, it affects the eye of students due to long hours in front of the blue screen. Additionally, there is lack of interaction between the teachers and students far from the regular classes. Surely there are lots of factors that affects student life like appearing exams at home, students are being assessed at home only. Students are missing days in schools and colleges. Hoping the government take good decision on education with clear instructions as early as possible to avoid the situation that occurred due to Covid-19 pandemic. Neksungnola, SJU Dimapur

Narendra Modi from GST, One Rank One Pension, Rafale deal, Statue of Unity, 10 per cent reservation for the poor and celebration of November 26 as Samvidhan Diwas. He said that this politics was the root of the frustration of a party which had ruled for four generations. “Frustration of a party which has ended up riding the shoulders of others despite wielding power for four generations is behind this politics of the opposition for opposition’s sake, Modi said. He said none of the leaders of the political party had till date visited the Statue of Unity, built to honour the memory of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel whose contribution to unifying the country is well known. “Why? Because they had to oppose,” he said.
He said people had seen for themselves the role Jan Dhan accounts played in direct benefit transfer schemes during the coronavirus pandemic and they could also remember how it was opposed while being introduced by the Centre. He said after opposing the Ram Mandir in the Supreme Court for decades, they even began opposing its foundation stone laying in Ayodhya. Without naming the Congress, he accused it of being neither with the farmers nor with the youth nor the soldiers and recalled that the the party had demanded proof of surgical strikes instead of praising the bravehearts who carried out the exercise. He also recalled how it opposed the purchase of Rafale fighter jets. “They did not do anything for years to strengthen the Air Force, ignoring its pleas for being better equipped and modernised. I am pleased to see that Rafale fighter jets are strengthening our Air Force today. He said the farm laws were meant to set farmers free from restrictions which they had suffered for decades. “They will have both MSP and the freedom to sell their produce any-
where in the open market but there are people who are spreading lies about the bills. “They only want middlemen to thrive and want the problems of farmers to be perpetuated. The real reason behind the ongoing protests is that yet another source of black money has been closed for them,” the prime minister said. Modi was inaugurating six ambitious sewage treatment plants in Haridwar, Rishikesh, Muni-kiReti town and Badrinath under Namami Gange through video conference. He said the process of empowering people, farmers and the youth, and making the country selfreliant through big reforms will continue relentlessly. Modi also attacked the previous governments for wasting too much money over Ganga rejuvenation, drinking water and irrigations schemes without any results, claiming there was no coordination between the government departments involved. “This led to further aggravation of the problems instead of resolving them. But today the work culture has changed and every penny is going into the implementation of the projects,” he said.
NEW DELHI, SEP 29 (IANS): Warning Beijing against advancing its untenable unilateral interpretation, India on Tuesday said that it has never accepted the 1959 definition of the LAC with China. In response to queries on a recent media report quoting a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement regarding China’s position on the LAC, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Anurag Srivastava, said, “India has never accepted the so-called unilaterally defined 1959 LAC. This position has been consistent and well known, including to the Chinese side.” Under various bilateral agreements, including the 1993 Agreement on Maintenance of Peace and Tranquility along the LAC, the 1996 Agreement on Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) in the military field, the 2005 Protocol on Implementation of CBMs, the 2005 Agreement on Political Parameters and Guiding Principles for Settlement of the India-China Boundary Question, both India and China have committed to clarification and confirmation of the LAC to reach a common understanding of the alignment of the LAC.
Farm laws have to be opposed for country’s future, says Rahul NEW DELHI, SEP 29 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said the new farm laws will have to be opposed not just for farmers but for the future of the country, as he alleged that they were like a “stab in the farmers’ hearts”. Interacting with a group of farmers from across the country, he said the GST and the noteban were also attacks on farmers, but these three laws will prove to be more detrimental. Gandhi also claimed that the new farm laws will foster an East India company-like culture and this time, a “West India company” has come in. “There is no difference between GST, noteban and these three laws. The only difference is that this is directly stabbing your heart with a knife,” he said during the virtual meeting with the group of farmers. “But I have clarity that this has to be opposed. Not for farmers, but for the future of India,” he told the farmers in a nearly 11-minute long video shared on social media. The Congress has opposed the new farm laws and party leaders and workers are protesting across the country, even as farmers’

Recalling the horrors of the Nirbhaya case, the Dalit teen was allegedly sexually attacked by four men on September 14 and referred on Monday to a Delhi hospital in an extremely critical condition with spinal injuries, paralysis and cuts in her tongue. She couldn’t survive the night and died at 3 am, Hathras Superintendent of Police Vikrant Vir quoted her family as saying. It has been provided that the use of handheld communications devices while driving shall solely be used for route navigation in such a manner that it shall not disturb the concentration of the driver while driving. NEW DELHI, SEP 29 (PTI): The present security scenario along India’s northern frontier is at an “uneasy no war no peace” status, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria said on Tuesday, referring to the festering border row with China in eastern Ladakh. Addressing a conference, Air Chief Marshal Bhadauria also said the Indian Air Force has responded to the situation with rapidity and is fully resolved to counter any “misadventure” in the region. “The present security scenario along our northern frontiers is at an uneasy no war no peace status. Our defence forces are prepared for any eventuality as you are aware,” the Chief of Air Staff said. The IAF is looking at inducting around 450 aircraft and helicopters in the next two decades, besides upgrading at least 200-300 planes during this period, Air Chief Marshal Bhadauria said. He also said the recent induction of Rafale fighter jets along with previous acquisitions of C-17 Globemaster aircraft as well as Chinook and Apache helicopters have provided the IAF with substantial tactical and strategic capability
enhancement. “Air power will be a crucial enabler in our victory in any future conflict. It is therefore imperative that IAF obtains and maintains technological edge over our adversaries,” he said at the conference on energising the Indian aerospace industry. Five French-made multirole Rafale fighter jets were inducted into the IAF on September 10. The fleet has been carrying out sorties in eastern Ladakh in the last couple of weeks. The IAF has already deployed almost all its frontline fighter jets like Sukhoi 30 MKI, Jaguar and Mirage 2000 aircraft in the key frontier air bases in eastern Ladakh and elsewhere along the Line of Actual Control.
NEW DELHI, SEP 29 (PTI): Bypolls to one Lok Sabha and 56 assembly seats spread across 12 states will be held on November 3 and 7, the Election Commission said Tuesday, but did not announce “at this stage” byelections to seven assembly constituencies in four others states. While bypolls to 54 assembly seats would be held on November 3, those for one Lok Sabha seat in Bihar and two assembly seats in Manipur would be held on November 7. The votes for all the bypolls will be counted on November 10, alongside the counting of votes for the general assembly elections in Bihar. Before announcing the schedule, the poll panel issued a separate statement

on Tuesday to say that it has decided not to hold “at this stage” assembly bypolls in seven seats across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and West Bengal. The decision has been taken based on inputs received from the chief secretaries and poll officials in these states, the poll panel said in the release. While there are two vacancies each in the assemblies of Assam, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, one seat is vacant in the West Bengal legislature. The term of the legislative assemblies of the four states would end on different dates between May and June next year. Besides the Valmiki Nagar Lok Sabha bypoll in Bihar, by-elections

are being held to 28 seats in Madhya Pradesh. Most of these 28 seats fell vacant when rebel Congress members resigned from the party and the assembly to join the BJP. After the resignations of the Congress members, the Kamal Nath-led government lost majority and the BJP returned to power. Earlier, the EC had said that bypolls are pending in 64 assembly seats. But the figure now stands at 63, including the seven seats in four states where the schedule was not announced on Tuesday. The reason is that the number of vacant seats in some states has changed due to various reasons, including court cases.

unions have launched a stir in Punjab and Haryana. “The voice of farmers has a lot of strength. It is with the help of this voice that India attained independence and once again India will become independent through the farmers’ voice,” Gandhi said. The former Congress chief said he had seen in Uttar Pradesh’s Bhatta Parsaul village during his padyatra in 2011 that big businessmen wanted the farmers’ land as well as their farm produce. “The first fight I fought was of land acquisition and the entire media attacked me,” he said. “They said this is a fight against black money but it was not true. The purpose was to weaken our unorganised sector and the poor, farmers and labourers,” Gandhi alleged.

Ta l k i n g t o h i m , Dhirender Kumar, a farmer from Champaran in Bihar, said farmers are being exploited in the name of these laws and they will be forced to commit suicide due to hunger. He said the 2006 bill abolishing the APMC Act in Bihar should be brought back and be implemented in the state once again. Ashok Bootra from Yavatmal in Maharashtra feared that no one would buy the farm produce at minimum support price (MSP). “I feel any farmer who protests will be put in jail. In 1840, the East India company used to put out the price of cotton from England and the entire world would buy at that rate. But the businessmen would know of the price in advance,” he said. “The way East India Company used to do business, I feel the same pattern is being followed again. Farmers and small businessmen will be looted. When farmers will not get the rates for their produce, suicide rate will increase,” Bootra said. Replying to this, Gandhi said, “You want to say earlier it was East India Company, now a West India company has come in.”

DEHRADUN, SEP 29 (PTI): In a scathing attack on those opposing the new farm laws, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said they wanted only the middlemen to thrive and referred to the burning of a tractor in Delhi by Congress workers as an insult to farmers. “They are opposing the freedom of farmers and want their problems to continue forever. By torching farming equipment, which the agriculturists worship, these people are now insulting farmers,” he said without naming the Congress. The Congress’ youth wing activists on Monday morning set a tractor ablaze near India Gate, a few hundred metres from the Rashtrapati Bhavan and Parliament, to protest the contentious farm laws. Modi said the opposition has only one way of doing politics in the country and that is by opposing things. Terming it “opposition for the sake of opposition”, the prime minister said that by resisting big reformative steps by the Centre such as the farm laws, these forces were making themselves irrelevant in the society and in the country. He accused them of challenging everything

“As resolved by the then LH chairman of Lotha Hoho declared the resolution in Bangkok in the 3rd Naga people’s consultative meeting”, LPO stated. Asserting that the Lothas uphold the resolution till today and treat it as ultimate, the organisation said the resolution was also submitted by then LH leaders on behalf of Lotha people to NSCN (I-M) at Hebron on January 21, 2005. Hence, LPO reasoned that it disapproved the new resolution at the behest of current LH leaders to represent Lothas in Naga political solution. LPO further asserted that it would not allow any disgruntled element and
people with vested interests to mislead the Lotha people and cautioned that if any individual or group on Lotha soil defy or derail the current political negotiations, he or she would be held fully responsible for any untoward incident thereafter. LPO urged the “right thinking and sensible” Lothas not to remain mute spectators and watch the dying of the community’s future generations under this “unmandated and unapproved” LH team leading the community to a dark world at this deciding times of Nagas. It called upon the Lotha people to raise their voice and think for the upcoming generations to live a peaceful and prosperous life in the future.

Mumbai, Sep 29 (PTI): The Indian rupee lost further ground on Tuesday, settling 7 paise down at 73.86 to the US dollar, tracking weaker Asian peers against the greenback. Besides, month-end dollar demand from importers too exerted pressure on the Indian currency. Tensions mount as Armenia, Azerbaijan continue fighting
YEREVAN (ARMENIA), SEP 29 (AP): Armenian and Azerbaijani forces accused each other of attacks on their territory Tuesday, as fighting over the separatist region of NagornoKarabakh continued for a third straight day following the reigniting of a decadesold conflict. Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said Armenian forces shelled the Dashkesan region in Azerbaijan, while Armenian officials said Azeri forces opened fire on a military unit in the Armenian town of Vardenis, setting a bus on fire and killing one civilian. Armenia’s Foreign Ministry “completely” denied reports of shelling the Dashkesan region and said in a statement that with those reports Azerbaijan was laying the groundwork for “expanding the geography of hostilities, including the aggression against the Republic of Armenia.” The previous two days of fighting killed dozens and left scores wounded. The Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Ministry reported 84 servicemen killed so far. Azerbaijan’s president, Ilham Aliyev, said Tuesday that 10 civilians were killed on its side, but he didn’t offer any details on the country’s military casualties. The heavy fighting broke out Sunday in Nagorno-Karabakh, which lies within Azerbaijan but has been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by the Armenian government since 1994 at the end of a separatist war.

The region in the Caucasus Mountains of about 4,400 square kilometers (1,700 square miles), or about the size of the U.S. state of Delaware, is 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the Armenian border. Soldiers backed by Armenia also occupy some Azerbaijani territory outside the region. The renewed fighting prompted calls to end the hostilities from around the world. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has pushed for “an immediate ceasefire and a return to the negotiating table” in phone calls with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan, her office said Tuesday. She told the two leaders that the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe offers an appropriate forum for talks
and that the two countries’ neighbors “should contribute to the peaceful solution,” Seibert said. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said during a visit to Greece that “both sides must stop the violence” and work “to return to substantive negotiations as quickly as possible.” Turkey is supporting Azerbaijan in the conflict, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan calling on Armenia to immediately withdraw from the separatist region. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Tuesday that Turkey is “by Azerbaijan’s side on the field and at the (negotiating) table.” Cavusoglu told reporters that the international community must defend Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity in the same way it defended the integrity of Ukraine and Georgia.
“They are holding Azerbaijan, whose territories have been occupied, on an equal footing with Armenia. This is a wrong and unjust approach,” Cavusoglu said after a visit to Azerbaijan’s Embassy in Ankara. Russia, which along with France and the United States co-chairs the Minsk group set up in 1992 to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, urged every country to help facilitate a peaceful resolution of the conflict. “We call on all countries, especially our partners such as Turkey, to do everything to convince the opposing parties to cease fire and return to peacefully resolving the conflict by politico-diplomatic means,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday.
‘120mn rapid Covid tests to be rolled out for poorer nations’ G E N E VA , S E P 2 9 (IANS): At least 120 million affordable, high-quality rapid Covid-19 tests will be rolled out for low and middle-income countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in an announcement. According to a statement issued on Monday, the organisations involved in agreement include the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND), Global Fund, Unitaid, and the WHO. The WHO and the leading partners will ahead with the project despite it not being fully funded yet.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
“As part of this comprehensive, end-to-end effort, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has executed separate volume guarantee agreements with rapid diagnostic test (RDT) producers Abbott and SD Biosensor. “These two arrangements will make available
to LMICs 120 million antigen rapid diagnostic tests (Ag RDTs) over a period of six months,” the WHO statement said. It further said that these tests provide results in 15-30 minutes, rather than hours or days, and will enable expansion of testing, particularly in countries
that do not have extensive laboratory facilities or trained health workers to implement molecular (polymerase-chain reaction or PCR) tests. An emergency-use listing was issued by the WHO last week for the antigen-based rapid Covid19 diagnostic tests which cost $5 each. “High-quality rapid tests show us where the virus is hiding, which is key to quickly tracing and isolating contacts and breaking the chains of transmission,” Monday’s statement quoted WHO DirectorGeneral Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus as saying. “The tests are a critical tool for governments as they look to reopen economies and ultimately save both lives and livelihoods.”
his government. The Opposition was anticipating strong reaction from the government following Sharif ’s attack on the military in the multiparty conference over a week ago. Sharif while addressing the conference via video link from London talked about the Army’s involvement in politics, saying in the country “there is a state above the state.” The powerful Army, which has ruled Pakistan for more than half of its 70 plus years of existence, has hitherto wielded considerable power in the matters of security and foreign policy. The Opposition is anticipating more arrests. The NAB has already issued a call up notice to JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman who is also leading the joint opposition’s campaign against the government in income beyond means case. P a k i s t a n’s m a j o r opposition parties have demanded “immediate” resignation of Prime Minister Khan and planned countrywide protests next month to oust his government.
China criticises proposed Quad Foreign Min meet BEIJING, SEP 29 (PTI): China on Tuesday criticised the forthcoming meeting of the Foreign Ministers of India, Australia, Japan and the US in Tokyo, saying it is opposed to the formation of “exclusive clique” harming third party’s interests. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will participate in the Second India-Australia-Japan-USA Ministerial Meeting on October 6, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement in New Delhi on Tuesday. Jaishankar will visit Tokyo from October 6 to 7 for bilateral consultations with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi. The two ministers are expected to discuss bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest, the MEA statement said. Asked by a Western media journalist for his reaction to the meeting of Foreign Ministers of India, Japan, US and Australia also known as Quadrilateral Security Dialogue or Quad, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a media briefing here that “peace, development and global cooperation is the overriding trend of today’s world”. “Multilateral and plurilateral cooperation should all be open, inclusive and transparent. No one should seek an exclusive clique,” he said.
BEIJING, SEP 29 (PTI): China on Tuesday voiced its opposition to India undertaking infrastructure development for military purposes in the border areas of Ladakh, and maintained that both countries should avoid any activities that might complicate the situation upsetting the consensus reached between them to ease the situation. “China has not recognised Ladakh Union Territory illegally set up by the Indian side”, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a press briefing here while replying to a question by a western media journalist that India was prioritising construction of high altitude road network on its border with China in the Ladakh region. It may be recalled that when China first expressed its opposition to India’s move to create a separate Union Territory of Ladakh, a day after the state of Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two union territories on August 5, 2019, the then External Affairs Ministry spokesperson had said India does not comment on the internal

affairs of other countries and similarly expects other countries to do likewise. “We are opposed to conducting infrastructure development for military purposes in the border area. Based on the two sides’ consensus no side should engage in the border areas in any activities that might complicate the situation to avoid undermining efforts by the two sides to ease the situation”, Wang said. To another question on reports that China has carried out massive development of border infrastructure, Wang said reports released by “some institutions” stating that China has built new military bases on its side is “completely false”.
“First some institutions once released the socalled information on new military bases or facilities China has built on its side. Such reports are completely false. They are driven by ulterior motives”, he said. “Second China consistently and strictly abides by the agreements signed with the Indian side. We are committed to maintaining peace and stability along the border with India and at the same time we firmly safeguard our sovereignty, territorial integrity and security”, he added. Wang said that for a long time China has been conducting activities on its side of the Line of Actual Control(LAC) and they have always complied with relevant agreements. “We hope the Indian side to work for the same purpose, together with China to achieve the cooling of temperature on the ground and to prevent adding complex factors to the concerted efforts by the two sides to ease the situation”, he said. India and China are locked in a nearly fivemonth-long border standoff in eastern Ladakh.

He said being the chief minister of Punjab province his decisions caused a loss of millions of rupees to the businesses of his elder brother Nawaz and his (Shahbaz) son Hamza in order to benefit the public. Following the arguments, the judge accepted NAB’s request for a 14-day physical remand of Shahbaz and ordered for him to be presented in the court again on October 13. The court directed that Shahbaz’s performance re-
be implemented whether he is in prison or outside. No one should be mistaken that such disgraceful tactics will make us bow down.” “Shahbaz’s arrest is unjustifiable and unacceptable. The Imran Khan regime has broken all records of injustice but we will not be cowed into submission by such tactics,” he said. PML-N Vice Presid e n t M a r ya m N awa z strongly criticised the arrest of her uncle and party president Shahbaz, saying he was being “punished” for standing by his brother Sharif ’s side. “Make no mistake. Shahbaz’s arrest comes just ahead of the planned protests next month by his party - the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Khan. The Imran Khan government last week filed the money laundering case against Shahbaz, who served as chief minister of Punjab province from 2008 to 2018, and his family. The anti-graft body has claimed that the assets of Shahbaz’s family ballooned from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 700 crores in the last 30 years, which they have failed to justify. Nawaz, who has been in London since November 2019 after securing bail on medical grounds in Al-Azizia Mills corruption case in which he was sentenced for seven years, strongly reacted to his brother’s arrest. Shahbaz, the younger brother of three-time former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, was taken into custody from the Lahore High Court’s premises on Monday after the court rejected his bail application in the Rs 700 crores (USD 41.9 million) money laundering case. The 69-year-old former chief minister of Punjab province was produced before the accountability court Judge Jawad-ulHasan on Tuesday. Shahbaz requested the court to allow him to present arguments in his defence instead of his lawyer. The court allowed him. Covid-19 may deteriorate men’s testosterone levels, says Study
n a major study on patients hospitalised due to Covid-19, the researchers found that the disease might deteriorate men’s testosterone levels. The findings, published in the journal The Aging Male, revealed that, as men’s testosterone level at baseline decreases, the probability for them to be in the intensive care unit (ICU) significantly increases. While it has already been reported that low testosterone levels could be a cause for poor prognosis following a positive SARSCoV-2 test, this is the first study to show that Covid-19 itself depletes testosterone. “Testosterone is associated with the immune system of respiratory organs, and low levels of testosterone might increase the risk of respiratory infections,” said study author Selahittin Cayan from the University of Mersin in Turkey, “Low testosterone is also associated with infection-related hospitalisation and all-cause mortality in male in ICU patients, so testosterone treatment may also have benefits beyond improving outcomes for Covid-19,” Cayan added.
The research team looked at a total of 438 patients. This included 232 males, each with laboratoryconfirmed SARS-CoV-2. All data were prospectively collected. A detailed clinical history, complete physical examination, laboratory and radiological imaging studies were performed in every patient. All data of the patients were checked and reviewed by the two physicians. The cohort study was divided into three groups: asymptomatic patients (46), symptomatic patients who were hospitalized in the internal medicine unit (IMU) (29), and patients who were hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU) (46). In this study, the mean total testosterone decreased, as the severity of the Covid19 increased. The mean total testos-
terone level was significantly lower in the ICU group than in the asymptomatic group. In addition, the mean total testosterone level was significantly lower in the ICU group than in the Intermediate Care Unit group. The mean serum follicle-stimulating hormone level was significantly higher in the ICU group than in the asymptomatic group. “We found Hypogonadism - a condition in which the body doesn’t produce enough testosterone in -- (51.1 per cent) -- of the male patients,” Cayan said “The patients who died had significantly lower mean total testosterone than the patients who were alive. However, even 65.2 per cent of the 46 male patients who were asymptomatic had a loss of libido,” Cayan added. The authors state future studies should look at the concentration levels of ACE2 (Angiotensinconverting enzyme 2) -- an enzyme attached to the cell membranes of cells located in the intestines -- in relationship with the total testosterone levels. Every little bit helps.” The latest donation from the band comes after they gave $295,000 in coronavirus relief grants in July. It followed from the $350,000 pledged by the foundation to fight the disease in April. In January, the band contributed $750,000 to the Australian bushfire relief effort. Meanwhile, Metallica’s drummer Lars Ulrich recently opened up on the one Metallica song that he never wants to hear again, after discussing the band’s trailblazing legacy in a new interview. (NME)

NASA targets Halloween for next manned SpaceX mission
N
ASA and SpaceX now are targeting October 31 for the launch of the agency’s SpaceX Crew-1 mission with astronauts to the International Space Station. The US space agency had earlier targeted October 23 for the launch of the mission which comes after the SpaceX Demo-2 test flight which flew astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley to the space station. The new target date which falls on Halloween will deconflict the Crew-1 launch and arrival from upcoming Soyuz launch and landing operations, NASA said on Monday. While a Soyuz capsule launch is scheduled for October 14, a Soyuz departure from space station is set to take place on October 21. NASA said the additional time is needed to ensure closure of all open work, both on the ground and aboard the station, ahead of the Crew-1 arrival.
The Crew-1 mission will take astronauts Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover, and Shannon Walker of NASA and Soichi Noguchi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to the station on the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft on a Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. The launch will be the first time an international crew will fly aboard a NASA-certified, com-
mercially-owned and operated American rocket and spacecraft from American soil. Following the launch, the Crew-1 astronauts are scheduled to arrive at the space station for a sixmonth science mission aboard the orbiting laboratory. NASA said it is in the final stages of the data reviews needed ahead of certification following the agency’s SpaceX Demo-2 test flight. (IANS)
How to manage marks during & post-pregnancy
Bollywood demands justice for gang-rape victim in Hathras
S
tretch marks are a common annoyance during and post-pregnancy and the easiest and most convenient way of reducing these marks is by following a pregnancy skincare regimen, health experts have said. Stretch marks often appear on the belly, thighs, breasts, and hips, during their second trimester as during pregnancy the skin undergoes several changes. Along with the appearance of stretch marks, the skin tends to sag and become dry and itchy due to lack of moisture. However, the best part is that with early intervention, these skin changes may fade or disappear after childbirth. “Skin tends to change during pregnancy, which means regular skincare routine probably won’t be very effective. Hence, understand the nourishment that skin requires during this phase and choose a regimen accordingly,” said Dr Prathibha Babshet, Ayurveda expert, R&D, The Himalaya Drug Company. For pregnant mothers, Babshet shared an essential two-step skincare routine
B for stretch marks during and post-pregnancy. First, massage gently before bedtime: A massage is the most effective way to reduce stretch marks. Indulging in a light massage every night before bed helps in building skin elasticity while increasing blood flow. “The increase in blood flow also results in a lightening of the marks. New moms can include this as part of their bedtime routine with an oil specially formulated for stretch marks; preferably olive, wheat germ, almond, and sesame,” she said. Then, moisturise after a shower. When the moisture level in the skin is maintained, it not only results in soft and supple skin but also helps reduce itchiness and the appearance of stretch marks, according to the expert. Babshet also added

that opting for a cream with a herb-oil-butter complex helps provide deeper moisturisation, especially when used after a shower. “A blend of almond oil, wheat germ oil, olive oil, mango butter, kokum butter, and shea butter, and herbs like centella, pomegranate, and licorice helps firm up sagging skin and reduces the appearance of stretch marks naturally,” she said. The experts also stressed that, apart from a good skin care regimen, it is equally important to take care of your health and body. “It is advisable to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly. Drinking enough water also helps keep the skin hydrated. Avoid eating junk food and eliminate caffeine from your diet,” Babshet noted. (IANS)

New Delhi, Sep 29 (PTI): The women’s national wrestling camp will finally begin at the SAI Centre in Lucknow from October 10, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) said on Tuesday, with a warning that the grapplers who miss it will not be considered for national team selection. The national camp was to begin from September 1 but postponed due the coronavirus pandemic. To m a k e m a t t e r s worse, the country’s two of the four Olympic-bound wrestlers -- Vinesh Phogat and Deepak Punia -- returned positive for the virus, creating more fear in the minds of many wrestlers. After assessing the situation and on the advice of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the WFI has finally made up its mind to start the camp in six Olympic weight categories -- 50kg, 53kg, 57kg, 62kg, 68kg and 76kg -- till December 31. Wrestling was among nine disciplines that the
SAI picked for resumption of activities from October 5, under its ‘Khelo India Phir Se’ initiative. “We are starting the camp from October 10 in Lucknow. The strength of the camp will remain same, three wrestlers in each of the six Olympic weight categories,” WFI Assistant secretary Vinod Tomar told PTI. The wrestlers will have to undergo a 14-day quarantine period and return negative test before they are allowed to begin mat training. Asked if all the top wrestlers have agreed to join the camp, Tomar said, “All will have to come. Those who will miss the camp will be replaced and will not be considered for selection.” Asked specifically if Vinesh has agreed to join the camp, Tomar said the WFI is arranging what she needs. “She wanted to train abroad but in current situation, we are giving her good partners to train with at the camp.”
Before the camp was postponed, 2018 World Championship medallist Pooja Dhanda had said that “we have to learn to live with Coronavirus”, indicating that she will have no issues in joining the camp whenever it starts. Meanwhile, the coach of an up and coming wrestler said his ward will join the camp but only because a place in the national team is at stake. “After speaking with the parents of the wrestler, we have decided to send her. But the fear of catching the virus is still in their minds. We can’t say no, we can’t afford to miss the camp because then the federation will not invite her for trials for national selection,” said a coach, who did not wish to be named. “Especially, after the news of Vinesh and Deepak contracting the virus spread, they are not comfortable training outside. They are satisfied with training at their coaches’ akharas but what do you do,” he said, expressing helplessness.
minutes and a tidal wave of attacks saw them ahead by the interval. Mane is the star of the show at Liverpool at the moment, outshining even Salah with his potent mixture of pace, work-rate and goal threat. The attacker may have rode his luck early on, however, when he caught Tierney full on with that raised arm and might have been very relieved to only see the yellow card produced by referee Craig Pawson. Liver pool’s squad strength was also on display, with new signing Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson missing through injury, they coped impressively and the icing on the cake was provided by Jota’s lively late cameo, in which he missed a great chance, had one taken off him by Salah and then scored in a moment which clearly delighted Klopp on the sidelines. The challengers will have hopes of depriving Liverpool of a second successive title - but on this evidence it will take some doing.
FIFA hands Marco Trovato life ban for

match fixing
Zurich, Sep 29 (IANS): FIFA has handed a lifetime football ban to Marco Trovato, president of Paraguayan club Olimpia, for match fixing. Along with the ban, Trovato has also been fined 100,000 Swiss francs (around $108,000), FIFA has said in a statement. FIFA’s disciplinary committee found the 41year-old guilty of “manipulation of football matches and competitions” and of failing to comply with his duty to collaborate during disciplinary proceedings. “The decision to sanction Trovato is related to a series of matches that took place between 2018 and 2019, while he was president of the club,” the world football governing body said on Monday without providing further details. It added that Trovato, who has been president of the Asuncion club since 2014, had 10 days to lodge an appeal.
We can finish in top 4 in Tokyo: Deepika
Deepika Thakur
New Delhi, Sep 29 (IANS): Former Indian women’s hockey star Deepika Thakur believes the current team, led by Rani, has a strong chance to finish in the top four in the Olympic Games scheduled to be held next year in Tokyo. Deepika, who was recently conferred with the Arjuna Award, feels the team has it in them to bounce back when international competitions resume after the Covid-19 break despite the fact that they have not been in competition for a significant part K Y M C
of this year. “I certainly believe the team can bounce back. They were in good rhythm after winning back-to-back tournaments last year and they had done well in New Zealand earlier this year.” “They were high on confidence too. This team is hungry to achieve success at the highest level and hence I am sure once competitions resume, they will bounce back and do everything in their capacity to finish top 4 in Tokyo,” she added. Moving forward,
Deepika feels the team should remain motivated and focused on their goal of doing well at the Olympic Games. “The current Indian side is very committed and focused. But when you have to be in national camps without competition, it is easy to feel less motivated,” stated the experienced defender. “Also, without competition, it is difficult to assess improvement. Hence, I would say it is a very crucial time for the team and each player should have her own yardstick and must
work on raising the bar,” she added. Deepika, who was part of the Indian ream at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and was a significant contributor to lift the Asian Champions Trophy title in 2016, further credited the team’s resurgence to Hockey India who according to her have ensured there are no setbacks in the team’s preparations despite the ongoing battle with the Covid-19 global pandemic. “I am happy that the team was able to resume activities soon after nationwide lockdowns ended. Even though there may not be any competitions this year due to the prevailing travel restrictions, remaining in the national camp will allow the players enough time to return to old form and keep up their fitness level,” she said. The defender, who has over 200 international caps, believes Hockey India has ensured that the women’s team gets “fantastic” exposure at the international level and planning the ACTC (Annual Calendar for Training and Competition) accordingly has been critical in the team’s resurgence.
WEST BROM, SEP 29 (AGENCIES): West Brom have agreed another season-long loan deal with Benfica for Croatian midfielder Filip Krovinovic. The 25-year-old Croat also spent last season on loan with the Baggies. Now the 25-year-old wants to prove he can be just as influential in the Premier League He made 40 appearances and scored three goals in the Championship as the club won promotion to the Premier League. “I know it took a little bit of time but now I’m here and that’s the most important thing,” Krovinovic said. “It’s an absolute pleasure to be back with family.” He added: “I said to my brother that it’s like coming back to school after the summer holidays. To see your friends is one of the best things in your life.” West Brom have begun the Premier League season with two defeats and a 3-3 draw with Chelsea at The Hawthorns, having led 3-0 at half-time.
There is now weekly testing in the Premier League.
Ten people have tested positive for coronavirus in the latest round of testing conducted by the Premier League - the highest number of positive tests since the season began. A total of 1,595 players and club staff were tested for Covid-19 between 21 and 27 September. Those who have tested positive - who have not been identified - will now isolate for 10 days.
The Premier League carries out weekly testing of staff at all 20 clubs. Last week West Ham confirmed that manager David Moyes and players Issa Diop and Josh Cullen were self-isolating after testing positive for the virus. The 2020-21 season started on 12 September after the coronavirus pandemic caused a delay to the completion of the previous campaign.

Liverpool were far superior but Arsenal will rue a great chance missed by Lacazette, who shot tamely at Alisson when he was clean through with the score 2-1 and their night was complete when Jota, making his Anfield bow following his move from Wolves, shot low past Leno from the edge of the area. Liverpool’s response to Arsenal taking the lead sent a powerful message to anyone with hopes of challenging Jurgen Klopp’s side for the Premier League title this season. In contrast to the collapse we saw from Manchester City once Leicester City took control at Etihad Stadium on Sunday, Liverpool simply went through even higher gears after Lacazette pounced to give the Gunners the lead. battalion organizes Bairstow, Rashid set up first win for SRH 78th‘FitCRPF India Freedom Run’
Abu Dhabi, Sep 29 (PTI): Opener Jonny Bairstow’s sublime fifty was complemented by a stellar bowling effort from Rashid Khan as Sunrisers Hyderabad outplayed Delhi Capitals by 15 runs to open their account in the 13th IPL here on Tuesday. Put in to bat, Bairstow (53 off 48) scored his second fifty of the tournament, while David Warner (45 off 33) and Kane Williamson (41 off 26) also came up with valuable contributions, helping Sunrisers Hyderabad post a competitive 162 for four. Defending the total, leg-spinner Rashid (3/14) returned with three crucial wickets, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/25) scalped two and T Natarajan and Khaleel Ahmed (1/43) claimed too chipped in to restrict Delhi to 147 for 7 in 2 for a deserving win. Delhi lost opener Prithvi Shaw (2) early in their chase but Shikhar Dhawan (34 off 31) and

skipper Shreyas Iyer (17) took them to 34 for one in the first six overs. Rashid got into the act straightaway, dismissing Iyer with his second ball and then returned to remove Dhawan with a wrong’un in the 12th over as DC slipped to 63 for three. Rishabh Pant then smashed two sixes on both sides of the wicket in the 13th over to ease the pressure. Shimron
Hetmyer (21) also joined the party, launching Khaleel Ahmed for successive sixes in the 15th over. However, Bhuvneshwar came back to dismiss Hetmyer, before Pant became the third victim of Rashid. Needing 59 runs from 30 balls, all eyes were on Marcus Stoinis (11) but he was done in by a well placed yorker from Natara-
Hamilton admits he ‘may not always get it right’
Lewis Hamilton leads Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas in the drivers’ championship by 44 points.
SOCHI, SEP 29 (AGENCIES): Lewis Hamilton has admitted he “may not always get it right” after accusing Formula 1 bosses of “trying to stop him” at the Russian Grand Prix, reports BBC Sports. Hamilton lost the lead of the race as a result of a 10-second penalty for making two practice starts in the wrong place. “I may not always react the way you want me to when tensions are high,” Hamilton posted on social media. “But I am only human and I am passionate about what I do.” He went on: “I’ll take my lessons and keep fight-
ing on to the next one. I may not always get it right in the face of adversity.” Hamilton was initially also given two penalty points on his licence for the incident, although these were later rescinded after Mercedes and Hamilton gave evidence that the team had instructed him that it was acceptable not to do his starts in the usual place. Immediately after the race, Hamilton was asked whether he thought the penalty was excessive. He told Sky Sports: “It’s to be expected. They’re trying to stop me, aren’t they?” A few minutes later, asked in the news conference for written media
whether he felt F1 bosses really were trying to hold him back, Hamilton said: “I don’t necessarily think it’s for me. “Whenever a team is at the front, they are under a lot of scrutiny. Everything we have on our car is being triple checked and triple checked. They are changing rules, such as the engine regs, lots of things to keep the racing exciting, I assume. “I don’t know if the rules in terms of what happened today was anything to do with it, but naturally that’s how it feels. It feels we’re fighting uphill. But that’s OK. It’s not like I haven’t faced adversity before.” In his message on social media on Tuesday, Hamilton said he was “learning and growing every day”. Hamilton posted the message of his own volition, BBC Sport has been told. He had not been contacted by F1 bosses over his remarks. Hamilton went into the race 55 points - more than two clear wins - ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas in the World Championship.
jan to end Delhi’s hopes. E a r l i e r, B a i r s t o w smashed two fours and one six in his innings and shared two crucial partnerships -77 off 57 balls with Warner for the opening stand and 52 off 38 balls with Williamson for the third wicket. Making his IPL debut, Jammu and Kashmir’s Abdul Samad (12 off 7) blasted a four and six in his useful cameo. Warner and Bairstow were circumspect with the pace trio of Ishant Sharma, Kagiso Rabada (2/21) and Anrich Nortje maintaining their line and length. The result was Sunrisers could only score 38 in the powerplay, which yielded just two fours and a six -- all hit by Warner. Bairstow picked his first boundary in the seventh over, launching a slog sweep for a six off leg-spinner Amit Mishra (2/35). The duo tried to make up for the lack of boundaries on the slow track with their excellent running be-
tween the wickets to keep the scoreboard ticking. Wa r n e r s e n t o n e straight over Ishant’s head for his second six and then picked a four off Mishra with a reverse sweep but the spinner had the last laugh as he had him caught behind with SRH reaching 82 for one in 10 overs. Mishra returned to dismiss Manish Pandey (3) before Sunrisers crossed the 100-mark in 14th over. Playing his first match of the season after recovering from an injury, Williamson smashed two fours in the 16th over to take SRH to 128 for two. Bairstow reached his fifty off 44 balls before holding out to Nortje in the 18th over. Williamson too was dismissed in the last over. Brief scores: SRH 162/4 in 20 overs (J Bairstow 53, D Warner 45; K Rabada 2/21) DC 147/7 in 20 overs (S Dhawan 34, R Pant 28; Rashid Khan 3/14) by 15 runs
I-League Qualifier: Garhwal FC are not underdogs, says Sayak New Delhi, Sep 29 (IANS): The 2020-21 footballing season will get underway with the I-League Qualifier 2020 as five teams - ARA FC, Bhawanipore FC, FC Bengaluru United, Garhwal FC and Mohammedan SC - will battle it out for the direct entry in the I-League 2020-21. Garhwal FC, who hail from the national capital, will begin their campaign against Kolkata giants Mohammedan SC on October 8 at the Kalyani Stadium and a key figure for them will be 23-year-old goalkeeper Sayak Barai, who has stated that his side is “not an underdog” for the tournament and that the team’s unity is a ‘big asset’ for them. “All five teams want to qualify for the Hero ILeague. Many might be considering us to be the underdogs but I don’t think it is correct. I am very confident about our team’s qualification chances as we are a strong unit. Other teams may have star names that draw focus but we are ready to spring a surprise,” he told www.i-league.org. “All the players in the side support one another. We are one team - unity is important for every team
and our team’s unity is one of our biggest assets. We are growing and improving as a team continuously,” he added. The side from Delhi stood atop Group A in the 2019-20 2nd Division League with 14 points in seven matches, thanks to a brilliant run of form. Barai stated that while the players are still working towards reaching “match-level sharpness”, they are in good shape due to extra efforts being put in by the coaches. “When we resumed training after lockdown, we were in good shape because of the plans given by the coaches. We assembled for a camp in Delhi and would train daily according to the match times,” he said. “We are still working towards match-level sharpness but the extra work being put in by the coaches is making it easier for us. We were all very active even in lockdown and the Delhi camp was very intense so as to make us ready for the matches,” he added. Garhwal FC touched down in the City of Joy on September 25 and are currently in quarantine in the ‘bio-secure bubble’ as they get set to resume training on the field very soon.

French Open: Pliskova survives first round scare Bengaluru’s Yash Aradhya set to
PARIS, SEP 29 (AGENCIES): Jelena Czech second seed Karolina Pliskova came from a set down to avoid an upset against Egyptian qualifier Mayar Sherif in the French Open first round, reports BBC Sports. World number four Pliskova, 28, had eight set points in the opener, before losing to Sherif - ranked 172nd in the world - in a tie-break. The 2017 semi-finalist wrapped up a quick second set against the 24-year-old after winning four games in a row. Pliskova came through a tense decider to claim a 6-7 (9-11) 6-2 6-4 victory. “It was super tough,” she said. “Especially after losing the first set after having set points. “She played a great game, especially in these conditions.” Sherif kept up an impressive level throughout and the pair exchanged breaks at the start of the second set. But Pliskova then won four games in a row, eventually holding serve to level things. The Czech was made to work much harder for the final set as she failed to convert five break points before winning the sixth to

go 4-3 up. She held serve and wrapped up the match after two hours and 15 minutes with an ace down the middle. Pliskova, who has never won a Grand Slam, will face Latvian world number 43 Jelena Ostapenko in the second round.
Ostapenko gets first French Open win since 2017 title
Ostapenko said she believes she can return to the world’s top 10 with a little more consistency in her game after securing her first French Open victory since lifting the trophy in 2017, reports france24. com. The Latvian, 23,
blasted 46 winners en route to a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Madison Brengle -- her only win at Roland Garros outwith her shock run to the title three years ago. Ostapenko’s raw talent and fearless approach powered her to a stunning French Open triumph that saw her become the first unseeded player to win the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen since Britain’s Margaret Scriven in 1933. However, Ostapenko admitted she struggled to cope with increased expectations following that fairytale run in Paris, and has added just two minor titles to her collection since beating Simona Halep in
the 2017 final. “After I won it was a tough time. I had to get used to the pressure but now it’s all gone, and finally I won my first match after two years,” she told reporters on Tuesday. “I feel like much better than the years before. I was practising a lot. I didn’t play the US swing and I was practising all the time on clay. “I was kind of waiting for this clay season. Finally, here we are. Yeah, just taking one match at a time, but really happy with my performance today.” Ostapenko reached a career high of fifth in March 2018 and made both the quarter-finals and semi-finals at Wimbledon in the two appearances directly after her French Open breakthrough.
Heather Watson loses as British singles hopes end on day three
Heather Watson was unable to prolong British interest in the French Open singles after losing her first-round match to France’s Fiona Ferro, reports BBC Sports. Watson, 28, was the final Briton in the draws after five of her compatriots were beaten on the opening two days. But the world number 56
lost 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 to Ferro, who is ranked seven places higher in the world. Watson’s defeat means she has lost six straight matches since the professional game returned in early August. The Guernsey player competed at a decent level against the inform Ferro - in a match delayed by rain and played in damp conditions - but their contrasting results coming into the Grand Slam event in Paris appeared to prove decisive. Ferro, 23, has climbed into the world’s top 50 for the first time on the back of winning a clay-court title at the Palermo Open last month. That added confidence is what seemed to give her the upper hand in a pivotal first-set tiebreak from which Watson could not recover. The pair continued to be evenly matched in the second set, but again it was Ferro who edged the crucial moments. Trailing 2-0, she broke back in the third game and then in the seventh to claim her first main-draw win at her home Grand Slam. Watson’s defeat means it is the first time since the French Open in 2013 that there are no British representatives in the second round of a Grand Slam.
