Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) has expressed serious concern over the recent spate of extortions and kidnappings particularly in Dimapur, and appealed to the state authorities to check the menace of unabated taxation, that has become unbearable for the citizens. CNTC through its media cell cited the recent incident where an employee of SymBios Pvt. Ltd was “reportedly kidnapped by a NPG group for his alleged involvement in selling off a stolen bike with forged documents”. In this regard, CNTC has appealed to all responsible to let the law take its own course of action. Also, expressing sympathy with SymBios Pvt. Ltd for “facing such unwarranted situation” during these difficult times, the CNTC has assured to extend its support. On the other hand, the CNTC, while taking a cue from the particular incident, stated that employers should also “check the antecedents and backgrounds of their (Cont’d on p-5)

Russian COVID vaccine safe, induces antibody response in small trials: Study MOSCOW, SEP 4 (PTI): Russia’s ‘Sputnik V’ COVID19 vaccine, approved in the country last month, produced antibody response in all participants with no serious adverse events in small human trials, according to the first peer-reviewed results of the preventive published in The Lancet journal on Friday. Results from earlyphase non-randomised vaccine trials in a total of 76 people show that two formulations of the vaccine have a good safety profile detected over 42 days, and induce antibody responses in all participants within 21 days. Secondary outcomes from the trial suggest the vaccine also produces a T cell response within 28 days, the researchers said. The two-part vaccine includes recombinant human adenovirus type 26 (rAd26-S) and recombinant human adenovirus type 5 (rAd5-S), which have been modified to express the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. The adenoviruses, which usually cause the common cold, are also weakened so that they cannot replicate

in human cells and cannot cause disease, according to the researchers. These vaccines aim to stimulate both arms of the immune system -- antibody and T cell responses -- so they attack the virus when it is circulating in the body, and also attack cells infected by SARS-CoV-2. “When adenovir us vaccines enter people’s cells, they deliver the SARSCoV-2 spike protein genetic code, which causes cells to produce the spike protein,” said study lead author Denis Logunov, from Gamaleya National Research Centre for Epidemiology and Microbiology, Russia. “This helps teach the immune system to recognise and attack the SARS-CoV-2 virus. To form a powerful immune response against SARS-CoV-2, it is important that a booster vaccination is provided,” Logunov said. The trials took place in two hospitals in Russia, and were open-label and non-randomised, meaning that participants knew that they were receiving the vaccine and were not assigned by chance to different treat-

ment groups. The trials involved healthy adults aged 18-60 years, who self-isolated as soon as they were registered, and remained in hospital for the first 28 days of the trial from when they were first vaccinated. In the phase 1 of each trial, participants received one component of the two-part vaccine -- four groups of nine participants were given the frozen or freeze-dried rAd26-S or rAd5-S component. In the phase 2, which began no earlier than five days after the phase 1 trial began, participants received the full two-part vaccine. There were 20 participants each in the frozen and freeze-dried vaccine groups, the Lancet study noted. To compare post-vaccination immunity with natural immunity formed by infection with SARSCoV-2, the authors obtained convalescent plasma from 4,817 people who had recovered from mild or moderate COVID-19, they said. Both vaccine formulations were safe over the 42-day study period and well tolerated, according to the study.

DIMAPUR, SEP 4 (NPN): Chümoukedima Village Council (CVC) has questioned the excise department in connection with the recent unearthing of an illegal spurious liquor manufacturing unit from 7th Mile Model Village by Assam Rifles and Dimapur police. In a press release, CVC chairman Razouvotuo Chatsu said the exercise has exposed the “sheer incompetence” of the excise department of the state. CVC said it was “baffling” that the responsible department was “oblivious of a nefarious racket of this proportion, set up and smoothly running right under their nose”. CVC said this has “only evoked presumptive questions on the credibility of the entire excise department by the public.” Further, CVC expressed concern that a few depraved

people were willing to play with precious lives by indulging in such unethical businesses. CVC expressed the view that the racket entails a thorough enquiry since it was “evidently clear that a bigger nexus is involved in it.” CVC demanded that the state government set up an investigation team led by capable and incorruptible officers to pursue the case and bring “all those criminals involved” to book and award stringent punishment as per provisions of law. Meanwhile, CVC has lauded the “successful operation” of 5th Assam Rifles. It also expressed gratitude to 5th Assam Rifles for the yeomen service in keeping the society safe from antisocial elements. CVC said the busting of illegal liquor unit has saved countless lives and reposed the faith of the public in the service provided by the security forces.

Governor, CM, others greet on Teachers’ Day BSL-2 lab in Tuensang begins testing DIMAPUR, SEP 4 (NPN): On the eve of Teachers’ Day, Nagaland governor RN Ravi, chief minister Neiphiu Rio and others have extended greetings to teachers of the State on Friday. The state government has cancelled this year’s statelevel celebration of Teachers Day in view of seven-day state mourning announced by the centre as a mark of respect to former President of India Pranab Mukherjee, who passed away on August 31, 2020. Gov: In a message, the governor expressed his heartfelt gratitude and good wishes to all the teachers for their lifetime of dedication and commitment to the great cause of educating “our youth.” He remarked that teachers have made outstanding contributions in building the society by shaping students’ personali-

ties and making them ideal citizens of the country. He said they guide and inspire people – both young and old – and executing the responsibility of creating awareness as well as opening the mind of people by instilling good values, morals and ethics. As a society, Ravi said “our goal” must be to create good citizens who are capable of preserving the good of the past and creating a better future, adding that in this regard the influence of teachers remained with the students for a lifetime. Obser ving that the extraordinary pandemic situation has created an unprecedented scenario and challenges for teaching, he said the teachers who feel inhibited by technology would have to learn online teaching and class management. He pointed out how the world was adjusting to

the new normal of distant teaching and learning. CM: In his message, chief minister Neiphiu Rio extended warm greetings to the teaching community of Nagaland on the occasion of Teachers’ Day that commemorates the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, former President of India and a distinguished philosopher, educationist and a teacher par excellence. H e s a i d t e a c h i n g, though very challenging, is one of the noblest professions and does not merely involve the process of teaching a child from books but also of inculcating moral values and life skills. He added that the impact of a teacher on a child lasts a lifetime. Mentioning that the relationship between a teacher and his pupil in the country has always been sacred

since ancient times, Rio said teachers have been always held in high esteem. As the whole world struggles with COVID-19 pandemic, he observed that the role played by teachers has also undergone a paradigm shift as teachers have been compelled to use various communications tools to reach out to students and impart education. “As teachers face these new challenges, I exhort them to keep themselves updated with the latest technologies, information and teaching techniques so as to better meet the high expectations of the students,” the message read. The chief minister also called for acknowledging the tireless efforts and sacrifices of all teachers, whom he wished good health, joy, peace and successful.

KOHIMA, SEP 4 (NPN): Seven days after its inauguration on 28 August, the State’s third Bio Safety Level-2 Integrated Molecular Diagnostic and Research Laboratory (BSL-2 lab) at Tuensang became functional from Friday as the first of the 266 samples was tested during the day. Sources from the Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) department informed Nagaland Post that one mentor for BSL Lab from North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Shillong conducted test trials, after which the report was sent to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) New Delhi for approval. The sources said ICMR (Cont’d on p-5) had approved the function-

ing of the lab on Thursday and stated that two scientists and three technicians would conduct the tests. The BSL laboratory at Tuensang could provide service to other farflung districts of Kiphire, Mokokchung, Zunheboto,

Longleng and Mon (Tobu). Most of those who had tested positive for COVID19 in Tuensang district were returnees. However, five persons from Shamator block tested positive without travel history, the sources added.

COVID patients still treated at NHAK

Meanwhile, even after the rollback of Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) from being a designated COVID-19 hospital to normal public healthcare delivery service, active COVID positive patients were still being treated at the hospital. When this Correspondent visited the hospital, it was learnt that the active COVID patients under the care of NHAK could not be shifted due to lack of adequate logistics and infrastructure. However, sources said pre-testing for COVID-19 would be conducted on all patients being taken to NHAK for admission for treatment of other ailments, adding that modalities were being worked out for the safety of patient and healthcare workers. It may be mentioned that all COVID-19 sample testing triage OPD/Flu OPD have been shifted to TT Stadium, Raj Bhavan, Kohima with effect from September 3 till further notice. K Y M C

government guidelines. The directions came on a Public Interest Litigation filed by lawyer Tanmay Jyoti Mahanta who told the court that the number of Covid-19 cases

Tickets for the event were priced at Rs 3,000 with the poster reading ‘Ladies walk-in free’. “It was a cultural

night, a get-together and I don’t think we need permission for that. Some people were invited, but it was not a ‘DJ Night’ as projected. We had a local singer at the party,” said Kirzom Ete, a law student and the organising secretary of the Bili Bolo Boys group. “The seating arrangement was done with 50 chairs and maintaining social distancing. Not everyone was wearing a mask, though.” Kirzom added, “A few of us were hoping to make some money for our admission into colleges by organising this event. Even though tickets were printed and priced at Rs 3,000 for entry, we accommodated people for Rs 500-2,000 as well.” Kirzom has now been quarantined at the resort along with 12 others. Arunachal Pradesh has recorded a total of 4,574 Covid-19 cases as of Thursday. There are still 1,399 active cases, while 3,167 people have been discharged at a recovery rate of 69.23 per cent. Gratitude of a nation

T

eacher’s Day on September 5 coincides with the birthday of India’s second President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (born September 5, 1888 ; died April 17, 1975), a philosopher, writer and a distinguished intellectual. The day is celebrated throughout the nation as Teacher’s Day. Unlike in the past years, this year, Teacher’s Day will not be celebrated through public functions in view of the pandemic. Nevertheless, it does not take away the importance of acknowledging those who have been instrumental in preparing generations of leaders, pioneers and inventors not only in India but throughout the world. Without teachers, the world today would be like the dark ages; ruled by ignorance and superstition. The different qualities of teachers has been categorised by William Arthur Ward, as the following- a mediocre teacher simply tells; a good teacher explains; a superior demonstrates while a great teacher inspires. A great teacher is a gem and has impacted generations. A teacher has to be well equipped with knowledge and also ability to communicate well. The challenges that a teacher faces in contemporary society is quite immense. As students have access to any information possible, they are also less inclined to be spoon fed with knowledge that is available everywhere or be taught with the concept of “one-size fits all” content. Today, teaching has become a very different profession unlike what it was some forty to fifty years ago. The world has undergone another huge transformation after the digital revolution ushered in SMS, Facebook, Twitter, Chats etc to a totally new and dynamic era. A teacher who is not digital literate stands to be outdated in today’s fast changing paradigms. This is well illustrated during the present pandemic where schools and educational institutions have had to go online. Also the subjects today are no longer restricted to text books but also include many other extra curricular interests on issues such as global warming phenomenon, information and technology, inventions,HIV/AIDS, internet and the like. In fact, today, students know so much more than what their predecessors knew some decades back. In a world of broken relationships, it is also important the teacher understand the value of building relationship with the students as well as parents and families. Mentoring is an attribute of a great teacher whose influence on the child helps in development of a healthy and balanced personality. A teacher in the true sense of the term loves to teach because it is a life’s mission and like a true gardener, tends to the tender plants with love and care and gets the special joy in seeing the flowers bloom. The state government would do well to accord recognition to pioneers of the teaching profession who have been instrumental in producing the great sons and daughters of Nagaland in the past. There are several pioneers of education in Nagaland and who have influenced society in Nagaland to a large extent and remained true to their professions such as - Mayangnokcha, Ruzukhrie, L.P.Godenho etc. As a tribute to teachers a befitting tribute may be used through the words of Sir Winston Churchill, “Never was so much owed by so many to so few.”

DailyDevotion His!

They were Yours, You gave them to Me… —John 17:6 A missionary is someone in whom the Holy Spirit has brought about this realization: “You are not your own” (1 Corinthians 6:19). To say, “I am not my own,” is to have reached a high point in my spiritual stature. The true nature of that life in actual everyday confusion is evidenced by the deliberate giving up of myself to another Person through a sovereign decision, and that Person is Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit interprets and explains the nature of Jesus to me to make me one with my Lord, not that I might simply become a trophy for His showcase. Our Lord never sent any of His disciples out on the basis of what He had done for them. It was not until after the resurrection, when the disciples had perceived through the power of the Holy Spirit who Jesus really was, that He said, “Go” (Matthew 28:19; also see Luke 24:49 and Acts 1:8). “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:26). He was not saying that this person cannot be good and upright, but that he cannot be someone over whom Jesus can write the word Mine. Any one of the relationships our Lord mentions in this verse can compete with our relationship with Him. I may prefer to belong to my mother, or to my wife, or to myself, but if that is the case, then, Jesus said, “[You] cannot be My disciple.” This does not mean that I will not be saved, but it does mean that I cannot be entirely His. Our Lord makes His disciple His very own possession, becoming responsible for him. “…you shall be witnesses to Me…” (Acts 1:8). The desire that comes into a disciple is not one of doinganything for Jesus, but of being a perfect delight to Him. The missionary’s secret is truly being able to say, “I am His, and He is accomplishing His work and His purposes through me.” Be entirely His!

Naga Hoho responds to Z. Lohe

here is nothing wrong with constructive criticism and from this we learn and better ourselves. We are not expecting anyone to be sycophantic in anyway, and this is certainly not our expectations. However at the same time, we do not take constructive criticism from people who have never constructed anything. It is a universal truth that everyone is free to express his/her views and opinions in a democratic society, however some organizations and individuals who have time and again critically questioned with malevolence over the legitimacy of Naga Hoho and its role, but it is noted with all seriousness that so far none are able to come up with a clear cut solution in addressing the core issues. The recent statements of Mr. Z. Lohe, who was once NSF President under whose leadership the Motto of NSF “For a greater Lim and glory of the Nagas” was coined and a seasoned legislator, has been on a spree of attacking Naga Hoho. Mr Lohe for reason best known to him has been painting the activities of the Naga Hoho in a very bad taste misinterpreting the activities and intentions of Naga Hoho. Therefore the Naga Hoho

wishes to make some relevant clarifications for the citizen to hear our side of the story. That NH at no point of time has changed its position in questioning the integrity and seriousness of Mr.R.N.Ravi who is an Interlocutor for the Indo-Naga Peace Talk representing the GoI. 1. When HK Zhimomi, President NH said “we have no connection with NSCNIM’s statement of favouring or not favouring “Ravi” as Interlocutor from our side” was only in reply to a query of a reporter who asked him “whether NH’s Representation to PM was in line with or an endorsement of the NSCN-IM’s letter to PM. 2. NH is not questioning any individuals or organisation’s expressed views, but only questioning the Interlocutor as to why he should term the Naga national workers as Underground and Armed-gang with whom he is holding peace talks for such long years. 3. NH’s intention was never to delay the Naga Political Solution but it is our solemn prayer to bring IndoNaga political settlement at the earliest possible time. 4. It is put on record that unlike Mr Z. Lohe, who

is fighting for strengthening the 16 Point Agreement within the perimeter of Indian constitution and a separate solution for the present Indian segregated Nagaland state, Naga Hoho stands for all Nagas irrespective of boundaries covering the contiguous Naga areas and inclusive political settlement once and for all. Further, the Naga Hoho is disturbed by the Nagaland Gaon Bura Federation’s (NGBF) letter to Hon’ble PM of India seeking solution within the union of India. What is more shocking is that GB’s failed to realise that, the Naga political struggle for the last more than seven decades is not just for the state of Nagaland but is inclusive of all Naga areas. In this, we acknowledge Mr. RN Ravi who had categorically stated that, Naga problem is not confined to Nagaland state, but it covers all Naga inhabited areas. He went on to say that, there is no reason to talk if it is all about Nagaland state. As such, there will be one agreement and one solution. No wonder, the NGBF is a government agent and it was established to assist the district administration. The Naga people were taken by surprise, when the GB started

to claim their credibility in the Naga political negotiation. It has become obvious that, the NGBF platform was misused by some people to meet their interest. It is unfortunate that, the NGBF has chosen to be part of the problem and not part of the solution. We remonstrate that Gaon Buras are never a custodian of Naga customary laws rather they are accountable to every Village Council and the state government and punishable under the provision of law in the event of GB’s failure to abide by the directives of state government. NGBF may express their opinion but they cannot claim ownership or stakeholder towards solving Indo-Naga political problem. Over the years, the Naga Hoho have been working persistently for unity and reconciliation in line with all compatible organizations and facilitating the Peace Process for an early IndoNaga political settlement. Successive leadership had contributed in strengthening the Peace process; however, solution is delayed thus far due to various reasons best known to the negotiating parties. The Naga Hoho has time and again appealed for unity and reconciliation so as

to strengthen the Negotiation for an acceptable solution. Unfortunately, Naga people are busy in framing diverse opinion with state-centric and regional interest coupled with unity and political solution. New concept of Peaceful negotiation with GoI have emerged which questions the historical foundation of the Naga movement. We have no reason to blame others but ourselves. The Naga people must own responsibility that we have destroyed the fabric of Indo-Naga Political Talks. It is in the interest of the adversaries that we have defeated ourselves and become enemies of our own selves. There is no doubt that tribes from Nagaland state have been dissociated from Naga Hoho for different reasons in different times, yet then nobody can claim that there is no legality or existence of Naga Hoho just because there is no representatives from Nagaland state. It has been functioning with the majority units and representatives from Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Myanmar and even support from people of Nagaland. Every organization has different objectives and directive principles. For instance, Nagaland Tribes Council

(NTC) which claims to be the apex body of Nagaland state is as same as CNTC having only three tribes, (Ao Senden, Lotha Hoho and Sumi Hoho) affiliated to NTC. Instead, Naga Hoho have never question the legitimacy of NTC and their activities at any point of time as we have different perceptive and device on the question of solving Indo-Naga political issues. Nevertheless, it is not our interest to exhibit our differences to the outside world. It is disheartening to note that our own Naga brethrens laugh at each other with the sign of fulfilment when the Indian agencies and reporters castigate our own political groups and civil organizations. Naga Hoho shall never be the one to indulge in petty issues and politicking against any Naga organization and we expect others to reciprocate in the same manner. In this backdrop, Naga Hoho is constrained to clarify its role and activities in the interest of the Naga people. Hence any misadventure in the process of lasting solution should be own moral responsibility by those who works to divide the Naga family. Issued by, Communication Cell, Naga Hoho.

oses, pens, beaming faces, shy faces we miss them all. Silent competition on who receives the most, a single rose wrapped in cellophane would brighten the halls When I was young, a procession by the students was carried out all over the small town where I lived. Placards hoardings made on cardboards hinged on wooden sticks read ‘LongLive, All The Teachers’. ‘God Bless, All the teachers ‘ Boys would call out in unison ‘long Live’ the girls equally robust would chime in ‘All the Teachers’ We came across the students of another school where they decided to go short and sweet ‘Long live Teachers Day’. They meant well and the teachers accepted with love.Holding the placards itself was considered a prestigious assignment. Thirty years gone celebrating this day changed as technology and modernity banished those simple days away. Today we don’t have children waiting patiently for teachers, entering a noisy class as they chorus their wishes and naughty

ones minding the class making sure no one upsets the teacher. If we are teaching the primary section, we would have received cards saying… “I love you,ma’am”.I remember an incident when teaching 3 grade, a boy came purposefully and left a shiny ring on my table and walked away shyly. It was casting rays purposefully like its benevolentgiver, on picking it up I started sweating because that was the only thing thatcould be done at thatmoment. “Momma’s favourite, so I brought it for you because you are also my favourite.” Remarked the child off-handed.On being asked, “momma has many, she won’t mind.” After a frantic call Mother brought a rose in exchange of the ring. How precious that was! I had a diamond from an eightyear-old boy and a rose from the Mom. the emerging cultic churches

he term ‘cult’ refers to a system of religious veneration and devotion directed towards a particular figure or object. All religions are cultic in nature, yet the object of worship is God. A diversion from this true worship leads to erroneous cult where human beings begin to take the place of God. To divert the attention of believers from worshiping the One True God, some people rise up to certain heights and claim themselves to be new gods or goddesses of this generation. While others claim themselves to have direct access to the divine world without fail. The lustrous appearances of such cult make hundreds of people to fall under their trap. Their teachings are almost heretical in nature. Some types of (invalid) cult exist in Nagaland under the guise of Christian churches – churches which are not true in themselves, those arising out of crisis of leadership and misunderstanding. These are the new cults in Nagaland which are harmful in themselves and for others. We have numerous churches of these sorts all for the glory of God.

We have learnt well to hide under the erected Cross. A group of people following their own versions of prayers and worship are not new to Nagaland. Although their object of worship is God, yet random emergence of churches under various names has become a type of ‘new cult’ or ‘new style’ in Nagaland. The search of highest leadership along with some misunderstandings bears fruits in plenty in the form of new churches in Nagaland. Should we call these new churches as cultic churches? There are numerous independent churches trying their best to please people in order to get more flock under their fold. Singing, dancing and loud prayers alone do not make a church. The Church is the body of Christ on earth. Some are trying to disfigure this body of Christ, while some are trying to present Christ in a duplicate form to appease the present generation. The young people in particular must not become prey to this type of churches. We must continue to keep our faith in God strong and healthy. We believe in freedom of religion, but this does

not mean we can segregate ourselves from each other as we like and build our own churches for the sake of survival. New churches which emerged out of nowhere are sufficient enough to confuse ordinary Christians as to what is and what is not a church. It is not necessary that every theologian starts a new church according to their whims and fancies. Today, we are worried about the cultic churches of China or other post-modern cultic churches which are negatively influencing the youth of Nagaland. But we are less bothered about the various churches which are fast emerging in front of our kitchen door. There is no wrong in forming new churches to serve the spiritual needs of the people. But random rising of new churches which resulted from crisis of leadership and misunderstanding must be checked at the right time. If not, a day will come a time when every family will own their personal church. We are not far from it. These are new cults (in different forms) in Nagaland. In my previous Article, “The Church and its virus in Nagaland”, I have men-

tioned the same sickness of the new emerging churches. ‘The time will come when there will be ANNUAL SPELLING BEE COMPETITION to name the different churches in Nagaland. There will be God church, Jesus church, Holy Spirit church, the only true, the more true church, the better church, the best church, harvested church, not yet harvested church, white church, green church, ripen church, paddy field church, jhum church, terrace church, Jer usalem church, Bethlehem church, Israel church, soul church, body church, head church, two feet church, two hands ministry church, etc…’ (if there are churches with such name, it is only coincidental. Therefore, no offence against any church bearing such name) There are numerous temptations that come our way, but those who are rooted in Christ will never waver. Jesus brings out the contrasting example of a wise man who built his house on rock and a foolish man who built his house on sand. Both men own a house, but the house of a wise man stood against all odds, whereas the house

of a foolish man collapsed. Listening and acting wisely is also a spiritual exercise of every good Christian. The more we learn about real Christian faith, the farther we depart from foolish pastures. The strength we derive from our spiritual communion with each other must be able to help us withstand all kinds of vices and evil deeds. Christian life is tough and the road we travel is narrow, but those who trust in God, everything is possible.

God’s blessings are best revealed when we learn to trust standing firmly on the solid foundation of prayer and good living. We must be on the constant lookout because a type of cult in the form of random emergence of churches is a threat to this generation. Yet the choice is yours. God bless Nagaland. Rev. Fr. G. L. Reader’s Post Online teaching not entirely feasible Sir,

While online teaching is the only option for teacher to conduct classes right now, it is not entirely feasible for the long run. Only a teacher can fully understand the challenges he/she faces. Not receiving full salary continues to affect teachers from smaller schools and there are numerous other technical challenges. If there is a decline in COVID positive cases in the following weeks, the Nagaland state government should brain storm and devise plans to reopen schools with proper SOPs in place. John L, Dimapur. KU refutes media report of taxation DIMAPUR, SEP 4 (NPN): Konyak Union (KU) has refuted a media report that mentioned that a written complaint was filed by some people to Charaideo (Assam) deputy commissioner accusing KU and Tizit Area Students’ Union (TASU) of indulging in illegal taxation and imposing bandh on Assam-Nagaland border that disrupted normalcy. Asser ting that the Konyak community had been actively supporting the Nagaland government in implementing the standard operating procedure (SOP) in fighting COVID-19 pandemic with its own resources, energy and time to ensure safety of the people, KU in a press statement said such unfounded news vilified the image of Mon district in general and hence warned that such acts would not be tolerated at any cost. The statement demanded a clarification and public apology from those making the allegation that defamed both KU and TASU through the media to clear doubt from the minds of the common people. It cautioned that if they failed to issue a clarification against the news report, KU would have no option but to file a defamation suit against the news report.

He said the Army officer, who suffered injuries, was undergoing treatment and his condition was stable. As the gunfight raged, two special police officers (SPOs) also suffered injuries, the police official said.

In his address at the combined meeting of defence ministers of SCO, Collective Security Treaty Organisation and Commonwealth of Independent States member states, Singh said: “I reaffirm today that India is committed to the evolution of a global security architecture which will be open, transparent, inclusive, rules-based and anchored in international laws.” We needed the institu-

tional capacity to deal with both traditional and nontraditional threats, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said at the SCO meet. “There is a need for a climate of trust, nonaggression and sensitivity towards each other key for peaceful, stable and secure SCO region. Respect for international laws, cooperation and peaceful resolution of differences is the only key for peace and stability in the SCO region,” he said. On the security situation in Afghanistan, he said it was a matter of concern. “India will continue to support efforts of people and government of Afghanistan for Afghan-led and Afghancontrolled peace process,” Rajnath said, adding: “The SCO contact group on Afghanistan is useful for exchanging notes among SCO member states.” He added that India was also deeply concerned about the situation in the Persian Gulf as well. “We call upon countries in the Gulf region to resolve differences through dialogue based on mutual respect and sovereignty,” he added. “India has vital interests and links of civilisation and culture with all States in the Gulf. In his address, he said the memories of World War II taught the globe the “follies of aggression” of one state upon another which brought “destruction” to all. “This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the World War II as well as the formation of the United Nations, which underpins a peaceful world, where international laws and sovereignty of states are respected and states refrain from unilateral aggression on another,” he said. NSF wished all the teachers success in the pursuit of all their noble endeavours.

from September 1-6, while NEET exams will be held on September 13. The review matters in the apex court are usually considered ‘in-chambers’ through circulation of petition among the judges of the bench. The judges then decide ‘in-chambers’ whether there is any merit in the review petition to re-examine the case in open court hearing. One of the review pleas was filed by ministers from West Bengal (Moloy Ghat-

ak), Jharkhand (Rameshwar Oraon), Rajasthan (Raghu Sharma), Chhattisgarh (Amarjeet Bhagat), Punjab (B S Sidhu) and Maharashtra (Uday Ravindra Sawant). The apex court had on August 17 dismissed a plea which had sought postponement of JEE (Main) April 2020 and NEETUndergraduate examinations amid spurt in number of COVID-19 cases. While refusing to interfere with the conduct

attend physical exams. It had also said the August 17 order is “cryptic, non-speaking” and does not discuss various aspects and complexities involved in a matter of this magnitude. The review plea had also said that only two reasons given by the court - life must go on and students should not lose an academic year - do not constitute an authoritative and comprehensive judicial scrutiny of the issue. It had said that JEE Mains is slated to be conducted over 660 exam centres with 9.53 lakhs students appearing for it, roughly 1,443 students per centre. Similarly for NEET UG, 15.97 lakhs students will appear in 3,843 centres across the country, nearly 415 students per centre, it had said. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had in August assured the top court that all safeguards would be taken while conducting the examinations.

In their review plea filed through advocate Sunil Fernandes, the ministers of six states -- ruled by parties like Congress, TMC, JMM, NCP and Shiv Sena -- had claimed that the top court order failed to secure students’ “right to life” and ignored “teething logistical difficulties” to be faced in conducting the exams during the COVID-19 pandemic. The plea had said the apex court order fails to satisfy the safety and security concerns of students who have to appear for the exams. NEW DELHI, SEP 4 (PTI): The Supreme Court Friday dismissed the pleas, including the one filed by ministers of six opposition-ruled states, seeking review of its August 17 order which paved the way for holding NEET and JEE exams. A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, B R Gavai and Krishna Murari, which considered the pleas inchamber, said there was “no merit” in the review petitions. The apex court also rejected the applications seeking listing of the review petition in the open court. “Applications seeking permission to file review petitions are allowed. We have carefully gone through the review petitions and the connected papers. We find no merit in the review petitions and the same are accordingly dismissed,” the bench said in its order. HYDERABAD, SEP 4 (PTI): Women police personnel can engage with mothers of children in Jammu and Kashmir to prevent the youngsters from taking the “wrong path”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, while lavishing praise on the people of the union territory, hit by the menace of terrorism. Addressing the 2018 batch of IPS probationers at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy here through video conferecing, he also cautioned them not to indulge in wrongdoings and said they would land in troubles with the latest technologies, which are also useful in better policing. Responding to a woman probationer, Modi heaped praise on the people of Kashmir, saying they are ‘lovely’ people and having special ability to learn new things. “I am very connected to these people. They treat you with so much love... All of us together, we have to work towards stopping the children from taking a wrong direction. “And this can be done by our women police officers efficiently. Geneva, Sep 4 (Agencies): The World Health Organization does not expect widespread vaccinations against Covid-19 until the middle of next year, a spokeswoman said on Friday, stressing the importance of rigorous checks on their effectiveness and safety. None of the candidate vaccines in advanced clinical trials so far has demonstrated a “clear signal” of efficacy at the level of at least 50% sought by the WHO, spokeswoman Margaret Harris said. Russia granted regulatory approval to a Covid-19 vaccine in August after less than two months of human testing, prompting some Western experts to question its safety and efficacy. U.S. public health officials and Pfizer Inc said on Thursday a vaccine could be ready for distribution as soon as late October. “We are really not expecting to see widespread vaccination until the middle of next year,” said Harris. “This phase 3 must

Sharif ‘unlikely’ to return by Sep 10 I s l a m a ba d, S e p 4 (IANS): Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is unlikely to return to the country by September 10 to face cases against him as his surgery in London is said to take place this month, the media reported on Friday. “Sharif ’s treatment in London is scheduled in a couple of weeks. How can he return home leaving his treatment in midway? Neither the Sharif family nor the party is ready to compromise on his health and they want him to return after completion of his treatment,” an informed source told Dawn news on Thursday. He said the Sharif family had been in consultation with its legal team and weighing options like filing an appeal against the court’s decision (directing him to return by September 10) or submitting ‘fresh medical reports and upcoming treatment schedule’ on next hearing of the case. The source further said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stalwarts had also requested the former premier “get well first” before making up his mind to return home to face cases and take part in politics. PML-N president and opposition leader in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif has also hinted at no “immediate plan to return”. K Y M C

take longer because we need to see how truly protective the vaccine is and we also need to see how safe it is,” she added. All data from trials must be shared and compared, Harris said. “A lot of people have been vaccinated and what we don’t know is whether the vaccine works... at this stage we do not have the clear signal of whether or not it has the level of worthwhile efficacy and safety...,” she added. The WHO and GAVI vaccine alliance are leading a global vaccine allocation plan known as COVAX that aims to help buy and distribute shots fairly. The focus is on first vaccinating the most high-risk people in every country such as healthcare workers. COVAX aims to procure and deliver 2 billion doses of approved vaccines by the end of 2021, but some countries that have secured their own supplies through bilateral deals, including the United States, have said they will not join.

Beijing, Sep 4 (PTI): President Xi Jinping put up a staunch defence of the ruling Communist Party, saying the country has witnessed “earth-shaking changes” under its leadership, amid strident criticism especially from the US that it pursued a totalitarian ideology. Commemorating the 75th anniversary of victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression on Thursday, Xi said Chinese people will not allow attempts by any individual or force to alienate them from the CPC. “Any attempt to distort the history of the CPC or vilify its nature and objectives, to distort or change the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, or to deny or vilify the Chinese people’s great achievements in building socialism will also be resolutely opposed by the Chinese people,” official media here quoted him as saying. Noting that the country has witnessed “earthshaking changes” since the victory of the War of Re-

sistance Against Japanese Aggression, Xi said that the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is ushering in a “bright future” as China is nearly completing its goals in poverty alleviation and building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, the state-run media reported. Regarded as the most powerful leader heading the CPC, the military and the Presidency with prospects of lifelong tenure in power, Xi in a veiled attack on the US said anyone and any force that tries to impose their will on China through “bullying tactics” and attempts to change the development path of the country, won’t be tolerated. Xi’s remarks come as China faces increasing political and economic pressure from the US, tension along its border with India and push-back from European countries and Southeast Asian nations over its economic and territorial ambitions. We ask everyone to rely on the facts.” Navalny is the most popular and prominent opponent of President Vladimir Putin, and the German announcement this week that he was poisoned by a nerve agent has raised the possibility of further Western sanctions against Moscow. Separately, a Russian

court said on Friday it had rejected a complaint filed by allies of Navalny accusing a top law enforcement body of inaction over what they said was his attempted murder. One of Navalny’s allies accused the Investigative Committee, which handles probes into major crimes, of inaction following a statement they filed to it on Aug. 20 demanding a criminal investigation be opened into Navalny’s attempted murder. The court said the Investigative Committee had passed on the statement by Navalny’s supporters to one of its regional branches in Siberia and asked for it to be reviewed. Kira Yarmysh, Navalny’s spokeswoman, said the court had said their statement had been treated as a “citizen’s appeal”, a legal nuance she said meant it could take up to 30 days for it be looked at. “Anything so they don’t have to start an investigation,” she wrote on Twitter.

The Democratic National Committee accused Trump of encouraging voter fraud and said the president was undermining confidence in the fairness of the election. “Let’s be clear: Voting by mail is a safe and secure way for Americans to participate in our democracy - and Trump should be working to make it easier to vote, not harder,” Reyna Walters-Morgan, the DNC’s director of voter protection, said in a statement. Many Americans vote by mail because they cannot make it to the polls. In 2016, nearly one in four voters cast presidential ballots by mail. The coronavirus pandemic is expected to result in a record number of mailin ballots this year as voters seek to avoid the risk of infection. Experts have cautioned the expected surge means a winner may not be clear on election night given the time it will take to count and verify all the ballots.

and in some states, including North Carolina, it is a felony not only to vote more than once but also to induce another to do so. State Attorney General Josh Stein, a Democrat, wrote on Twitter that the Republican president had “outrageously encouraged” North Carolinians “to break the law in order to help him sow chaos in our election.” Stein wrote, “Make sure you vote, but do NOT vote twice! I will do everything in my power to make sure the will of the people is

to vote early by mail and then follow up by attempting to vote in person. “On Election Day, or Early Voting go to your Polling Place to see whether or not your Mail In Vote has been Tabulated (Counted),” Trump wrote. “If it has you will not be able to Vote & the Mail In System worked properly. If it has not been Counted, VOTE.” Twitter Inc later placed warnings over the tweets for violating its rules on civic and election integrity. Facebook Inc also placed a new label on Trump’s post, in which it said “voting by mail has a long history of trustworthiness in the US and the same is predicted this year.” Facebook also said it would remove the video of Trump talking about voting twice, if people shared it without any captions or context, or in support of what the president said. A spokesman told Reuters on Thursday afternoon it had not yet identified or removed such versions of the video.

Washington, Sep 4 (Agencies): U.S. President Donald Trump has urged residents in the critical political battleground of North Carolina to try to vote twice in the November 3 election, once by mail and once in person, igniting a furor for appearing to urge a potential act of voter fraud. “Let them send it in and let them go vote,” Trump said in an interview on Wednesday with WECT-TV in Wilmington, North Carolina. “And if the system is as good as they say it is, then obviously they won’t be able to vote” in person. Trump has repeatedly asserted, without evidence, that mail-in voting - expanded by some states because of the coronavirus pandemic - would increase fraud and disrupt the November election, although experts say voter fraud of any kind is extremely rare in the United States. Voting more than once in an election is illegal

On Thursday, Germany started brightly on home soil and created the first chance of the game as Toni Kroos’ cross into the box allowed Thilo Kehrer to test Spain goalkeeper David de Gea in the 11th minute, reports Xinhua news agency. Spain responded with a big chance at the other end of the pitch as a misplaced return pass from Emre Can to goalkeeper Kevin Trapp allowed Rodrigo Moreno to intercept the loose ball. Both sides continued to exchange attacks after Leroy Sane unleashed a hammer on target to force de Gea into action once again six minutes later. Moreno remained in the thick of things and kept
