FLY ME TO THE MOON Did you ever think about leaving all behind to go somewhere where no one would bother you, just to spend quality time with yourself, and think about the past and the future, and how this would reflect on your present, review the decisions you took; how you regret taking some of them and how you regret not taking other decisions? Going somewhere where there is no stress, no people, no social media and no communication; just you and no one but you. I thought about it and decided to escape to the sea, but experiencing Sahel was not a relief, thanks to the fake atmosphere that surrounded me, I tried going home one day from work with nobody there and just lie on bed thinking and thinking, but again it sounded impossible as bed now is only for falling deep asleep after a long exhausting day to be able to carry on the next day with work, my kid and the daily routine. In a glimpse of having a chance to day dream, I thought of how would one escape everything and just click pause for a second. What if one could escape not just from home, the daily duties, pressure or the stress of his/her daily life, but from Earth in general!? Yes, I am talking about planet Earth now, I am not that pessimistic to say just die, but what if we can escape Earth and try another planet? Maybe our fate and life is associated and linked to the ground we live on, ‘Avatar

and Pandora planet concept..’ So, what if we can change the planet and “see what spring is like on…Mars.” Imagine leaving all behind; everything you’ve ever known, not just leave your comfort zone, your home, job or even country; leave the whole planet. It would be hell of an adventure, a true lifetime adventure, one that is worth living. Well enough imagining, get back to earth. NASA is still working on the team who will join this impulsive adventure and an Egyptian young man has already agreed to leave all behind and join. So, living on space is not a sci-fi movie anymore; be careful what you wish for. For now if you are like me not courageous enough to take the risk, read our well said this issue, where we give you, just for kicks, 12 reasons why you should live on Mars. At the end of the day, we live only once so, I am sure no matter the hardships, boredom or anxiety we feel, it is better than hazarding your one and only life to the unknown. Maybe having a nice trip, hitting the gym, going with your besties shopping, or buying a new red car is far easier to change your mood and help you refresh than packing to Mars. Earth is what we know, what we were raised knowing, and what embodies us, with all its people, conflicts, stress and even atmosphere, Earth is what we are created for, Earth is actually what we as humans deserve.

LA MER QUI DANSE

LOUNGE 14

How was the shift from computer engineering to fashion? A very successful one, I have always wanted to make that shift. I really admire what I am doing from the small detail to finishing the whole dress. Despite all the troubles that the Middle East is witnessing, they didn’t affect me as an engineer, on the contrary, I was progressing and working very hard, yet the feeling was nothing compared to that one after my first fashion show, seeing how people loved my collection, and how eager I was to learn more, develop my skills and expand my buisness as well as try new techniques and ideas.

LOUNGE 15

FASHION & TRENDS LOUNGE

How did your passion for fashion begin? I have always been into fashion since childhood, my mother is my first influencer, she loves sewing and I used to help her. I remember that I made a dress from small pieces of cloth to my sister’s doll, at that time I couldn’t imagine that I will be the person I am now. Getting out of your comfort zone and leaving your day job as an engineer to follow your passion, what was your wife’s reaction about that? I didn’t leave my job when first I started, I continued to support my small business to grow and learn how to manage it. I then came to a point when I couldn’t feel my selfworth anymore, I thought I didn’t achieve my own life goals, I am only working to achieve others’ goals, I looked at myself and started imaging myself in 5 years, and that’s when I had a very dark vision. I then decided to talk to my wife and started the business at that same day. After my mother’s support, Nada, my wife, was the one and only supporter, I couldn’t even think this could have happened without her, she gives me a push at the darkest moments and I take her opinion on lots of things, she loves what I am doing and she believes in it. Why did you name your collection ‘La Mer Qui Danse?’ I usually put names that can describe the collection and match the inspiration source for it, “Le Temps des Fleurs” is a Dalida’s song that I love and first dress from that collection came to my mind while I was murmuring it. “La Mer Qui Danse” or “the dancing sea” collection is the fourth one, which came from a song too when I listened to “Charles Trenet “La Mer,” the words gave me a vision of the whole collection, the flowy dresses, with the pastel colours and even used real sea nacres in embroidery, and waves like embr.oidery. What inspires you? Mostly music, architecture and fine art. What are your favourite fabrics? Personally, I like Chiffon, tulle and silk (anything flowy), but in each collection I use a new technique and a new fabric in order to challenge myself, in custom made dresses, I use whatever suits the client. Who are your favourite designers internationally and locally? I have many including, Alexander Mcqueen, Ralph & Russo, Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, sometimes it is not their work only, but what they added to fashion like Elie Saab, and how much he influenced the fashion industry in Lebanon.

FASHION & TRENDS LOUNGE

If you could describe your ideal client, what would you say? My ideal client is the confident woman who is able to see the beauty in herself before looking for it in what she wears because that’s what makes a dress look beautiful on her. She will be remembered by everyone with my dress in their mind. The usage of accessories in your designs is unique tell us more about that… I am not a jewelry maker, but when I have an inspiration, its units reflect on everything even jewelry. I love to set the complete look in my mind, so I decided to design a small jewelry and accessory collection to match its theme. What is the most challenging thing about being a fashion designer? Doing by yourself everything at the early beginning, spending lots of hours working, making mistakes and lots of hours later to correct them, knowing that every small action will keep an impression to everyone so you always worry about the end result. The small experience didn’t always lead to what in my mind, but this disappears by time and experience. Who are the celebrities you would love to dress? Queen Rania, Charlize Theron and Anne Hathaway. Locally, Nelly Karim, Ghada Adel and Sherine. What is your advices to emerging fashion designers? This is a very fast industry and trying to keep with that might not be easy, so try to focus on quality not quantity and learn from others. Practice a lot, help others and ask for help when you need, it is okay. Listen to your clients’ opinions, at the end they are the people who will buy and make you continue but of course, don’t lose your signature in what you are making for the sake of money. Keep the good manners with everyone. Work hard & dream big; believe in your dreams and it will just happen. Did your baby girl Jolie inspire you for maybe a children line? I did once a dress for my daughter “Jolie” on her baby shower, it was the greatest feeling I got when she wore it. I don’t know if I will do that professionally one day, I prefer to focus on haute couture for the time being.

LOUNGE 22

KEEP YOUR

RELATIONSHIP

ALIVE

ACCEPT THAT ALL RELATIONSHIPS HAVE THEIR UPS AND DOWNS

Just as you can’t expect to be happy all the time, you shouldn’t expect your relationship to be more than that. When you make a longterm commitment to someone you have to be willing to be with your partner in sickness and in health as well as in good times and bad times.

KEEP THE NOVELTY ALIVE

One of the positive aspects of being in a relationship with someone for a long time is that you really get to know each other. The

negative side of this is being bored after a while. However, there’s a way to keep the novelty alive like trying new activities together. That way you will create the excitement and the uncertainty that comes from the unknown, even if you’re with someone whom you know as well as the back of your hand.

CREATE COUPLES RITUALS

Creating rituals just for the two of you strengthen the bond and develops the relationships. Be it setting a fixed day every week to have coffee together, having to have dinner together everyday or spending an hour

talking about your day, your goal is to share some rules that can’t be broken and promise to do together.

SET GOALS TOGETHER

Act as a team and motivate one another to achieve the goals you’ve set together. Setting goals as a couple helps you move in the same direction and makes your wins their wins. Striving to achieve goals together creates happiness and adds meaning to the relationship.

DON’T GO TO BED ANGRY

Make it a habit to never postpone solving a conflict or talking about it. Fighting is healthy for a relationship, and it’s not the fight that creates problem, but the way you handle it. Promise each other to never go to bed unless you make up or at least discuss what is bothering you.

THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU SPEAK

During a fight people tend to become too

mad to take care of what they say, and words do hurt and cause pain, which can create bigger problems. By thinking before speaking you will not only avoid a bigger problem, but learn how to communicate with each other.

NO THIRD PARTIES IN A RELATIONSHIP

It became a habit that couples let a third party do the work for them by explaining and solving their conflicts. Whether the third party is your best friend, mother or close relative, still he can cause more damage. Keep what’s between you both private and learn to handle your own problems together.

DON’T COMPARE YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO OTHERS

Each relationship has its uniqueness, there is no relationship like the other and people are different and no one can be another version of someone else. Learn to see the positives of the relationship and work on the negatives without comparing your relationship or your

partner to someone else. Don’t forget that you chose to be with your partner and not someone else.

BE BEST FRIENDS

By learning to be good friends to each other you will create happiness in your relationship and avoid a lot of couple’s problems. Best friend talk to each other, tell each other everything, compromise and don’t need to have third parties. Learn to have these qualities in your relationship in order to make it flourish and develop.

UNDERSTAND THAT MEN AND WOMEN ARE DIFFERENT

It’s not that men are from Mars and women are from Venus, but it’s that both women and men handle situations differently, act differently, and perform differently. Put yourself in your partner’s shoes before any reaction, which will ease things and help you discover a lot about your partner.

The work performance review from your supervisor is mostly favourable. But, she did offer some criticism. What best describes your reaction? You feel hurt. Your eyes water up and you are on the verge of bursting out in tears. Smile nicely. Restrain from commenting. Inwardly you are seething and decide that your boss hates you. Disbelief. Become defensive or argumentative. Listen intently. You’re not happy about the review but you desire to improve your performance for future evaluations. You discover a hair (not yours!) in your food at a restaurant. What best describes your reaction? OMG. You snap your head around immediately to flag down your server and demand to see the restaurant manager. You don’t report it, but drop your fork and shove your plate aside. You’ve lost your appetite anyway. Not cool. You don’t make a big deal about it, but are disgusted by it just the same. You request some kind of adjustment on your bill from the server. You discreetly let your server know, and ask for a new plate of food. You have been invited to a party where you will meet new people. You are hoping to have a good time. What best describes your outfit? Fashionable. Something stylish, not too seductive, but not sedative either. I prefer not to blend into the crowd. Jeans. I’m no slouch, but comfort goes a long ways with me. Flamboyant. If I can’t draw eyes from the crowd when I make my entrance what’s the point of going? Sexy. Agree that it is for the best, but inside you are wondering “What’s wrong with that person?” Anger. What’s not to like about you? You want to know why, and ask your friend not to leave any details out. Relief! You ask your friend if she can find you a better match for another blind date.

You came in 2nd in a talent contest. What best describes your reaction? You graciously take the second place trophy but inwardly you feel cheated. Appreciative of the prize/recognition. Peeved. You just got home from the salon and your “new do” is not looking quite like you hoped. What best describes your reaction? You get on the phone for a “pity me therapy session” with a supportive friend. What are you talking about? I would never leave the salon unless my hair was looking fabulous. You vow to yourself not to leave the house until your hair grows out. Shrug it off. Everyone has a bad hair experience. Hair grows out. A friend suggests the two of you stay at home and enjoy a quiet evening together instead of going out on the town as planned? What best describes your reaction? No Way! You tell him you’re going out whether he wants to come along or not. You are disappointed, but agree without showing your disappointment. Okay by you. mira Tharwat talks to super star Ghada Adel about her latest role as Maha in this summer’s box office hit ‘Ahwak.’ The star reveals all about her first cooperation with Tamer Hosny, director Mohamed Samy and how close her real personality as a mother is to the character she played in the movie.

Back With Vengeance

This is the first time to see you with Tamer Hosny, how did you find it? I am really glad and overwhelmed with this experience, Tamer is an amazing person actually I was just texting him now to thank him for his amazing spirit that made the movie come out in such a great way. He is a giving cooperative colleague, he loves people who work with him. He is also humble and doesn’t act like a movie star. Weren’t you concerned about playing the role of a mother at the peak of your stardom? At all, the role attracted me so much, I believe that an actor should do any role at any age, if a young actor did the role of an old person we accept it, but when he does the role of a younger one he is subject to blame. However, I believe an actor is capable of presenting any role as we see in Hollywood, the other thing is that when an actress is already a mother like me she adds her personal life experience to the role.

How was the cooperation with director Mohamed Samy as this is your first time? I felt that I looked different this time and so was my acting style, even my husband director and producer Magdy El Hawary told me the same thing. He thought that my acting performance was totally different from my previous roles. Mohamed Samy was able to discover a new Ghada out of me and I read reviews like the rise of a new star while I’ve been acting for over 15 years so it is really funny, I enjoyed working with him a lot. When I watched the movie I was surprised from my performance, he is one of the few directors who negotiates with the actor each and every scene and tells him what to do. Also, because he wrote the movie with Walled Youssef he is aware of the characters; when I read the script I saw the exact scenes. The movie was full of interesting incidents behind the scenes, would you share some of them with us? (Laughs) I was shooting with a monkey for a whole day, he was friendly and nice, but the next day he suddenly became aggressive and he scratched my face with his nails, it was scary and since it was only the second day of shooting, I had to hide the scar all through the movie, luckily, it wasn’t visible, which reminds me of thanking head of photography Galal El Zaki for the amazing picture the movie came out with. Oh and at the end, I discovered that it is another monkey so maybe that is why he was scared and attacked me. Your last movie before ‘Ahwak’ was ‘Ala Ghosety,’ what was the reason behind your absence for a long time? Actually, I didn’t receive scripts in the cinema at that time; I think I only received about a couple of ones that I apologized for not participating in. I only got TV serials but not movies. In real life what kind of mother are you? I am like the movie, sometimes nice and sometimes crazy. When my kids watched the movie they told me you shout at your daughter in the movie the same way you shout at us! I go out with my kids and play with them, I live their age with them in order to raise them properly, I have 5 kids so I live childhood in all its forms till being a teenager. How do you manage your time between stardom and kids? I don’t really play a lot of roles so I give myself some space to be able to stay with the kids, that is why I apologized for the second part of ‘Saraya Abdeen’ because they wanted to start shooting right after the first part with only a month break, it was too exhausting for me as I like to have breaks between the roles I play to have time for my family. Have you seen the character you played in the movie in real life? I saw myself actually (laughs). I took parts from some mothers I’ve seen in real life. Also, when Mohamed Samy told me about the story I saw it exactly as you saw it, he made me see Rana’s character and predict how she acts and reacts in all situations, so he made it really easy to play the role.

I know you are a gym person, what are your favourite exercises? Going to the gym is a must especially when you grow older to stay in a good shape for the sake of life, career and my kids. My kids hate to see me not taking care of my appearance, they keep bugging me if I stay home not looking my best especially the boys. Back to your question my trainer is Mohamed Aboul Naga from Gold’s Gym, he tells me what to do but I don’t do certain exercises. Where did you spend the Eid vacation? In Gouna; just like the movie (laughs). What are you currently working on… I am on a break now, but I have a lot of scripts to read. NAGLAA HEDAYET EGYPTIAN CHILD’S JOURNEY to THE WHITE HOUSE l

osing a father is a very difficult experience especially when it happens in a young age, and it’s even more heartbreaking if he was a fighter who died in a war for the welfare of Egypt. This month we celebrate the 6th of October victory by paying tribute to all the martyrs of wars through taking you back in time and reliving the story of Naglaa Hedayet, the 14 years old Egyptian child, who was invited to the White House by Nixon the American 14 years old Naglaa with President of the United States Richard Nixon President to spread peace. Nixon then told my father if I ever became the president of the United States, I a fighter pilot at the Egyptian army, but life and her unforgettable trip to the will have the pleasure to have you as my first he had a task to take Richard Nixon United States. guest in the White House. At this time, I was and his wife by his plane to Luxor and Aswan. Back then, Nixon was only a mayor not a president. only 12 years old, dad was so happy with the trip and when he came back home he told us everything and was overwhelmed with the trip showing us the pictures and telling us about Nixon’s promise.“

The Tragic News

“My father meant everything to me, he was my best friend and the most loving person; however, in 1967’s war he was killed by the United States’ weapons that were sent to Israel. It was even during a seizing fire treat that he was martyred.” Receiving the news of his death was shocking, “it was beyond tragic. A representative from the army told my mother the sad news, she collapsed when she knew about it, I was too young so

I couldn’t understand at the moment why she was crying until I couldn’t find him around anymore and I was in a constant mood of crying. The doctors told my mom if I kept crying like that I might lose my eye sight.”

The Letter

In 1969, Nixon became the President of the United States. Naglaa knew about the news and while she was running through the pictures of her dad she found one where Nixon hugging her dad and his wife is

smiling. “I was in Lycée Francais School in Triumph Square,” said Naglaa. “I had the post office right beside my school. I decided to write Nixon a letter yet unfortunately, my English wasn’t good enough as I was in a French school, but I managed to write few lines with bad spelling asking him: Do you remember H.H. whom you promised to invite to the White House once you become the president? All that I can ask you for is to stop sending more weapons to Israel so we don’t get to have more widows and orphans like me. The letter didn’t even include an address, I just wrote on it Richard Nixon United States of America, the White House, and my name on the back of the letter and address as the sender.”

A Surprising Call

A couple of month later, she already forgot about the letter. The same day she was feeling sick and didn’t go to school was the same day she received a call from the American Embassy in Cairo saying that Nixon received her letter and a representative wants to give her Nixon’s reply in person. “The American Ambassador in Egypt came to my house with a representative from Al Ahram Newspaper and journalists with photographers taking photos of me while I was sick in bed, I didn’t even have time to change my clothes! I’ve never thought the letter would be received, and there was a lot of spelling mistakes as it was written by a child, and I’d thought they will just ignore it. Also, Egypt and the United States were not on good terms back then. I read the letter saying that “No matter how many soldiers and army officers we lose in wars, we will never lose a man as great as your father and I wish to send you the same invitation I gave your father and invite you to the White House.” I was in 3rd preparatory year so, I had to wait for the final exams. Al Ahram institute handled the flight ticket back and forth and inside of the United States, the Egyptian American Friendship Association handled the expenses and the organization of my trips inside the US. “

The Egyptian Intelligence Vs. The Israeli Mossad

Naglaa’s trip was going to cause a very positive propaganda to support the Egyptian case and show the brutality of war having a 14 years old child talking about the loss of her father and having the United States

president supporting this, inviting her caused the rage of Israel, which Mr. Ashraf Ghorbal the Egyptian Ambassador in the United States at the time stated saying that the Egyptian intelligence played a great role opposing to the Mossad to guarantee the success of the trip and protect the life of the young girl. “Personally, I didn’t encounter any incident, but this was behind the scenes and what supports this story is that when I arrived to Los Angeles we found an announcement from the airport that my mother and I shouldn’t board the flight. My mother accompanied me without security boarding with us for our own safety,” said Naglaa. “I met Mr. Ashraf Ghorbal during the trip and he organized a lot of meetings with me as well as some Egyptians who live there. I was astonished from the questions I received because some American’s didn’t know that Egypt is a developed country, they thought we wear Galabya and ride Camels with no electricity, I had to correct this vision.”

Gifts to the United States of America

I went to Khan El Khalili and brought him an Egyptian antique jewelry box with other souvenirs and an album with his pictures with my father. I used to play harmonica so when we met him I played it with him and we talked about my dad.

The Preparations And How Nasser Supports It

Back then, after my father was martyred I was depressed and became a very silent shy and antisocial child, this trip changed my life as I met a lot of journalists including Jews, and I had to answer their questions properly and be trained to do so. I met Mr. Mohamed Hasaneen Hekal, who was the head of Al Ahram. He told me that president Gamal Abdel Nasser wanted to meet with me before my trip, but they don’t want it to look like a child who is sending letters or using me as a mean of communication between both presidents, so Mr. Hekal said “keep it that way” you are a Peace Ambassador, don’t get involved in politics because they

I spent two days at the White House where I slept over and had dinner with Nixon and his wife and kids. When I first came I thought it will be a formal trip, where they will make me first meet the secretary, but what happened is that I met him personally right away. Until now, I still remember how he was warm and kind and I still can’t forget his red face and blue eyes that were full of tenderness and love, which reminded me of my father kindness. He held me and kissed me that broke all the ice. We had a very friendly conversation that he even asked the journalist that accompanied me from Al Ahram to leave us to speak more openly and make it more intimate (My mom and I with himself). When he personally took me in a tour around the white house he took me to a room and asked me to sit down and make a wish and he said whatever you wish I will fulfill it at once, like any kid he expected I would The letter that Naglaa sent to Richard Nixon after winning the presidential elections and her father’s being killed during the war in 1967.

ask for chocolate or toys I told him I wish peace and nothing but peace in the Middle East. He said I will do all my best to fulfill that, it was true as he was the first American president to visit Egypt. I also went on a tour to see Apollo 12, which was on its way to outer space. I saw the monkey that they sent and I wrote a small letter to be sent to space with very small Egyptian and American flags in size saying in Arabic and English “We have failed to maintain peace on earth so, we will search on the moon for a beam of light which could make peace return again.” Speaking of peace, Nagla couldn’t have left the U.S. without seeing the United Nations; I was supposed to give an olive branch as a symbol of peace to the Secretary General of the United Nations back then U Thant, they couldn’t find the olive branch, but they asked me to enter as the symbol of peace, I went inside and they made me sit in the big hall as the one who runs the conference it was an outstanding feeling. As a kid, they took me to a trip to Disneyland, this was just like in heaven. I learnt a lot from this trip, there was a little jealousy from my colleagues but my mother played a great role to make me get back to normal.

The 6th of October Victory

When asked about how she received the news of the victory of the Egyptian army and gaining Sinai in 1973 Naglaa said with eyes full of tears “I felt that my father didn’t really die or go away; I felt that we took revenge for my father’s death and that he and all the martyrs that died in the war are here with us witnessing and celebrating.”

Spread Love, Peace And Beauty

We couldn’t miss this chance without asking a person who witnessed all this for spreading peace about the current Egyptian situation, and how the very same country residence are hateful and some parties wish the death of the other one Naglaa said ”If we love

14 years old Naglaa receiving the reply of Richard Nixon to her letter and his invitation to the White House. one another, first we can solve everything. I won’t forget an American journalist, who told me in a press conference you are searching for peace here why you didn’t maintain peace between each other first as Egyptians.” This was in 1969 without all the hate and bloodshed we see these days. Whenever I see that on TV now I feel really broken hearted we must start with each other as citizens of the same country to coexist because the end of this hatred would be really painful.”

Where Is Naglaa Hedayet Now?

An exceptional person who had his share in history and representing Egypt and being invited to the White House at such a young age must have taken a political path, but when I asked Naglaa about it she said “Actually, I’ve always wanted to join faculty of economics and political science, but I got very high grades at high school so no one encouraged me in the family it was either engineer or Medical school so I choice medicine. However, I regret that now and I encourage everyone to study and join the subject of his interest to shine in it.”

A Message To All The Widows And Orphans Of Egypt

When I told her what she would like to tell kids of martyrs who die these days in Sinai fighting terrorism or any other areas in Egypt she said with eyes full of tears and love “I want to hold them all so tight, give them a

big hug and tell them your fathers are not dead they are martyrs in heaven and you will meet with them one day. I wish this generation’s time will be full of peace with no bloodshed or hate, your parents died for the welfare of this country so, you should work hard for its prosperity as well. I totally understand how you feel and I know that the pain and rage you have will never go away, you can just direct it in a positive direction to build and direct the coming generation to maintain peace by working hard and making Egypt a successful country. mira Tharwat speaks to Innovative Architect and Interior Designer Mohamed Badie, about his designing concepts, his inspiration and his plans to break the norms. The 26 years old Egyptian artist discusses his plans to reshape the interior design art in Egyptian homes and his call to broaden our horizons and thrive for change.

MOHAMED BADIE BREAKING THE NORMS Tell us more about you... My name is Mohamed Badie, I was born in Kafr Sakr, Shakria in 1989. My zodiac sign is Taurus. I moved to Cairo in 2005 to study architecture and upon graduating I worked in filmmaking as an art director and set decorator for two years. I then began working on my own path of design as an architect and interior designer. I worked on various projects and constructions including,

LOUNGE 40

apartment blocks, residential houses, and industrial and commercial projects. Would you tell us some of the movies you participated in designing its décor? El-Feel El-Azra, 1001 Arabian Nights, Aswar Al-Qamar plus several commercial ads. Your designs are out of the box tell us more about that… Growing up, I refused to be just another person that comes along, lives as told,

follows all traditions and that’s it. Somehow I found a way to leave the group, change my ways, breakaway from all ties and restrictions that our communities impose on us. I am in no way dismissing our culture and traditions; however, I do believe we need to develop, broaden our horizons and thrive for a change! As an architect and designer, I believe that the space one lives in, or functions in, is not only a reflection of

the user, but also reflects on the mood and well-being of the person. Living in a residence that follows every aspect of our traditions (the ”Modhab;” the big dining room with all furniture pieces we grew up with ”Niche” being the main one with all the china plates no one ever uses; the depressing brown wooden bedrooms; the typical kitchen; the list goes on and on!) without development or creativity will only nurture that, thus raising yet another generation that can only follow. I had to break that! And to be honest with you, it’s not easy, but I had to start somewhere. In our society this is considered out of the box; however, this is what design means, to create, to innovate, to imagine! Our society is still several steps away from accepting what is truly ”out of the box.” How do you manage to find the perfect ingredient for innovative designs and still be practical? With experience, I believe, I began learning how to combine both practicality as well as creativity. It involves a lot of research, sketching, thinking out of the box. For instance, when I start working on a project I begin by setting the functions of the different areas. I then move on to furnishing, and finally work on the design accordingly. I strip down the area to its basic elements and work my way from there, building blocks, beautifying with impressions and accessories, enhancing the design, and ultimately coming up with the final results that include all

functions in a creative way. Apart from the Egyptian stereotypical ‘Niche’ what are the other pieces that Egyptians should consider giving up when designing their home? The issue in hand is more of the use of space and design rather than just the furniture pieces. These pieces (buffet, niche, etc.) are used worldwide, but practically! People deal with the spaces available incorrectly. For instance, in a 120m2 apartment, a typical user would have all possible furniture pieces crammed in that small space, making it impossible to optimize functionality. In terms of design, the typical Egyptian household has become extremely depressing! You enter a house knowing exactly what it would look like, with the ”Modhab” room, the brown kitchens, the same dining room, the brown bedroom, etc.. One of the main reasons behind this is that when a couple starts building a home there is a lot of input and pressure from older generations regarding the design and furniture selection, resulting in yet another typical house. What are the biggest challenges you encounter being a creative interior designer? Well, the biggest would have to be clients that are not courageous enough to actually change the idea of a home. Clients usually approach me with a little fear of change, which is in the human nature, but is definitely something that needs to change. They are

supposed to be the reason we as designers achieve our creativity peaks, rather than prevent us from creating such designs. It takes a whole lot of time and effort to get some clients to agree to my designs. Another challenge I face is that workshops in Egypt are extremely poor in terms of resources. This only brings up weak craftsmen that affect me as a designer. A lot of time is wasted in coordinating with the craftsmen taking them step by step through the production of each and every piece, where as this time could be used more efficiently in other tasks. Who are your idols when it comes to interior designers? Frank Lloyd Wright, Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind, Frank Gehry, Karim Rashid. These are my idols in terms of design, not only for their designs, but also rather for their courage to change the world and the definition of design. I idolize them for that. What is your advice to emerging architects and interior designers? As an architect or designer, you are the one responsible for the people’s lifestyle. Live up to that. Your designs have got to live up to the 21st Century standards. Egypt is in desperate need of change, and as designers you have the power to do that. Utilize that! We need change in our homes, our architecture, our urban designs; we need that in every aspect. I advise you to work on an identity for yourself as a designer, don’t work on projects just for the sake of income. Create your

LOUNGE 41

OUT & ABOUT LOUNGE

interiors

identity and embrace it. This won’t be easy at the beginning, but it will definitely pay off when established correctly. Would you share with us some of your tips on how to get the most out of small spaces? Think simply, it’s as simple as that. Strip the space down from all unnecessary things, and stick to what you need. What is your biggest inspiration? The philosophy of architecture as well as the diversity of the Egyptian culture and people; their personal characteristics and traditions. The colours you use for your designs are very vivid and cheerful, is that part of your personality? Definitely! You can find bits and pieces of who I am in every space and product I’ve designed, this includes color and style. They tell you whom I am, where I’m coming from, they tell you about my dreams and ambitions. There’s always a reflection of life, as a space impacts on its users, so I aim to make that a positive one. So, am I a culture shaper? I don’t know yet, let’s check that in the coming years. Where do you see Badie designs 10 years from now? To put in a nutshell, ”I want to change the world.” Therefore, Badie projects and design must reach all around the world. I also plan on opening a design academy in order to support and nourish the creative minds and souls of our designers, to give them the power to change. Who is your ideal client? The dreamer; the only one who would give me the power to design, to grow, to explore the extremes my imagination can reach!

LOUNGE 42

If you can describe your designs in one word what would you say? Spirited What’s with the triangle!? Triangles; a whole science on its own. To me triangles express boldness and edginess, a reflection of our rapidly changing 21st Century. They symbolize the deconstruction design style unlike squares and rectangles. To your surprise a room or a building does not necessarily have to have four walls or sides. A whole building could stand on one single point; as a triangle. When it comes to me I deal with designs in that matter, in the way triangles are with their edges and angles, with the courage they voice.

Your professional skills are emphasized and, one way or another, your leader or organizer skills are used. You’re very driven, attract opportunities, and you can mobilize others to reach objectives. This month stimulates your mind and encourages you to be more flexible and open to novelty and changes. Intellectual or manual labour, travel, and communication are favored and bring you money. The last decan of November 2015 requires special attention for you regarding finances. During the first two decans of November 2015 you benefit from a lot of energy. Steer clear of gossip, secret enemies, and subversive activities!

Laugh with one eye, cry with the other. The first two decans of November 2015, there is a chance of dissatisfactions or disappointments. There is water, wherever there is water we gain. 1 can live, some scientists mentioned that There is no Egypt on Mars; don’t get this means that we are the second generation 5 me wrong Egypt is a great country, but of human beings or living thing so, who imagine not having countries at all and knows maybe we can find some species there who are kinder, more generous, more loving and more peaceful to coexist with. As we all know men are from Mars and women are from Venus so, good news for all the single ladies out there if you didn’t find your perfect match on earth, when you go to men’s homeland you will find the right match for you, and guess what!? Venus is still pretty far so you won’t have competitors. Scientists mentioned that there is a possible life on Mars yet, the atmosphere will be different along with many other physical traits our human body is used to so, maybe there is a slight chance that on Mars you can eat without gaining weight!? If so, moving would be totally worth it. If you’ve watched Far & Away movie you’ll know that owning a piece of land in the United States is easier than applying for a visa, on Mars first come first serve so imagine the amount of investment and wealth you will

forgetting about boundaries living as one nation or species. Enjoying our life without prejudice life would be more peaceful for sure. And for those who miss Egyptian men, we still have one guy along who might be among the group chosen to move there and explore life on Mars for the first time, at least he is adventurous, and he thinks out of the box, which is not common between living-onearth-Egyptians. There is neither television, yet, nor facebook or any means of communication so, you will live in peace and be able to have quality time with yourself and the surroundings (hopefully it will be ET kind of aliens; no Resident Evil or terminator kind of aliens). No traffic, no unemployment, no racism, no Muslim Brotherhood, and no one to judge how you look, wear or eat, as well as no pollution or diseases (yet).

Your life would be a reference for more 9 generations to come; suddenly every single detail you do or experience will be

the talk of town (ok not the whole town just NASA’s scientists, still worth it though). You will be able to express your emotions freely and tell people around you how much you love them without having to die or suffer a fatal illness. Imagine you are packing and going to Mars, your farewell party would be the most interesting one because you are moving to another planet and most likely won’t come back so, everyone will say what is on their head without worrying. You won’t be afraid of any alien invasion; I mean you left earth to face them in their hometown so you are courageous enough to do it. There is no Ozone hole; we don’t know yet if there is Ozone on Mars in the first place or not, but at least it’s a brand new planet hopefully no earthquakes, Ozone holes or pollution.
