WE’VE BEEN WORKING HARD TO DRIVE PROGRESS FOR OUR MEMBERS We’ve been working hard to drive progress over the last 12 months and, together with our members, we’ve celebrated some significant achievements: • We have provided detailed guidance to our members and regular FAQs throughout the last year in response to government policy decisions. This includes advice on managing Covid-19, professional issues, assessment, relations with other unions, mental health of pupils and a wide range of other topics • Took the first steps to commence judicial review proceedings against the DfE in order to challenge the government’s plans for a full return to school at the start of January 2021

www.naht.org.uk

• Secured some initial small-scale emergency funding support for schools in the most precarious financial position as a result of Covid through the exceptional costs scheme and the Covid workforce fund

6

• We continued to press DfE, and build public awareness of the cost of Covid through case studies, two published member surveys and support for an EPI survey publication • Ensured that the government cancelled all forms of primary statutory assessment in 2020/21

• Represented the views of our secondary members via the government consultation on GCSEs and A-Levels. Ensured teacher judgement remains at the heart of how grades are award in 2021 • Ensured that there will be no school level performance data published or used for accountability purposes in 2021 • Successfully ensured that there would be no return to routine inspection in the spring and summer terms 2021 and that monitoring inspections for Inadequate and double RI schools would focus on how well schools are educating pupils in the current circumstances rather than progress since last inspection • Took the first steps to commence judicial review proceedings against Ofsted in order to challenge the legal basis for their visits to schools in autumn 2020 • We issued detailed guidance on monitoring inspections advice for members on how to handle a call from Ofsted following a parental complaint about remote learning.

HERE’S WHAT OUR MEMBERS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT BEING PART OF THE LEADING UNION FOR SCHOOL LEADERS “As school business manager, it’s important I’m engaged with and surrounded by like-minded colleagues, not least because of the current political climate. So, after careful consideration and recommendations from other leaders, I happily joined. My goal is for everyone to see NAHT as the natural home of SBM colleagues.”

THE VOICE OF OVER

MEMBERS

“I joined NAHT as a deputy head because I wanted a union which would support and develop me as a leader. Colleagues highly recommended it and I’ve never been disappointed. NAHT’s always provided excellent professional advice and I highly rate their courses.” Grant Strudley, Head teacher, Crown Wood Primary School

“In times of change and uncertainty, it’s reassuring to be part of a union that keeps me abreast of policy and practice, and voices my concerns to affect change at a national level. Having the might of NAHT supporting me as a leader brings comfort and calmness to my professional life.” Dame Nicola Nelson, Head teacher

“I was seeking a union of strength and conviction. NAHT provided that, especially in the guise of Rob Kelsall. He was, and still is, immensely knowledgeable, tenacious and supportive. There’s real solidarity too, which is on full display, especially in times of need. On top of that I’ve made many friends from all over the UK.” Sarah Hewitt-Clarkson, Head teacher

Do your personal finances make the grade? A free financial fitness report could help you to make stronger plans. After a year of professional and personal challenges, it’s never been more important to make sure you’re looking after your own wellbeing. That includes feeling confident about your financial future. The good news is, our long-standing partners, NAHT Personal Financial Services, are here to help you check your arrangements. At a time when you’ve got a lot on your plate – like the considerable task of safely running a school during these extraordinary times – it’s easy to check where you are with your own money. It’s also completely free.

The support you need A free Financial Fitness Report could help you keep your finances on track. It all starts with a conversation, where you can talk to a member of the NAHT Personal Financial Services' friendly team about your arrangements. At the end of the chat you'll receive your free, personalised report to keep and use however you like. It’s packed full of helpful information. From outlining the things you may already have in place – to suggesting areas you might want to give more thought towards. There are moments in life that we look back on as the thing that changed everything. This free Financial Fitness Report could be that moment for you.

Let’s talk about you

Provided by

The chat will be shaped around you and what’s relevant in your world. But as a preview, these are the kind of things that might be covered. • Check the foundations you have in place. From thinking about those what-if dilemmas to how you’re building up your savings. • What are your priorities? Your short-term goals may well have changed a bit. But let’s look beyond that to the next few years and what’s just over the horizon. • Is your money working hard enough? There are all sorts of ways you could boost your plans. It’s worth thinking about whether you’re making the most of the opportunities available to you. • How are you planning for the future? Hopefully, the challenges we’re all facing at the moment will eventually seem like the distant memory. That’s why we shouldn’t forget our long-term goals. What you’re doing, or not doing, right now could go a long way towards shaping your lifestyle – especially in retirement. Your report will summarise how you’re getting on in these and other areas. Hopefully, your finances are in good shape. However, it won’t hurt to find out if you could still do more.

It’s easy to get started 1. Call NAHT Personal Financial Services now on 0800 012 1248* to arrange an appointment 2. Speak to one of the helpful team – you can chat through your plans over the phone, or better still they offer an award-winning video service, Skipton Link 3. Receive your free report and insights guide, outlining the fitness of your financial plans Whichever path you choose to take, you will never be pressured to make any decisions. Take as much time as you need. To be clear, the Financial Fitness Report won’t include any personalised advice or recommendations. If you decide to get advice, NAHT Personal Financial Services' recommendations could involve placing your capital at risk, as the value of investments can fall as well as rise and you may get back less than you originally invest. *To help maintain service and quality, some calls may be recorded and monitored. 0800 numbers are free from landlines and mobiles for consumers.
