Next Step in Public Library Architecture

Hoe kan de openbare bibliotheek haar klassieke, maatschappelijke opdracht waarmaken in onze geïndividualiseerde en soms gefragmenteerde samenleving? En hoe past zo’n bibliotheek in de stedelijke publieke ruimte, waarin het vooral lijkt te gaan om commercie en consumptie? Het vraagt om een vernieuwende architectuur, verbeeldingskracht en bereidheid om contracyclisch te denken.

In Imagination and Participation onderzoeken bibliothecarissen Rob Bruijnzeels en Joyce Sternheim de belangrijkste transities in het openbarebibliotheek werk. Zij spraken met deskundigen en Nederlandse toparchitecten die in binnen- en buitenland openbare bibliotheken hebben gebouwd. De gesprekken en de eigen inzichten en ervaringen van de auteurs leidden tot een nieuwe visie op eigentijds bibliotheekwerk, die vertaald is in uitgangspunten voor de toekomstige architectuur van openbare bibliotheken.

De auteurs houden zich al geruime tijd bezig met de transitie van het bibliotheekwerk en de gevolgen daarvan voor de architectuur en de inrichting van bibliotheekgebouwen. Zij maken deel uit van het Ministerie van Verbeelding, een ontwerpcollectief dat een aantal opmerkelijke bibliotheken ontwierp. How can the public library ful l its classic social mission in our individualized and sometimes fragmented society? And how does such a library t into the urban public space, in which commerce and consumption seem to reign supreme? This requires innovative architecture, the strength of imagination and the willingness to think countercyclically.

In Imagination and Participation librarians Rob Bruijnzeels and Joyce Sternheim examine the most important transitions in public library work. They spoke with experts and Dutch top architects who have designed public libraries in the Netherlands and abroad. These conversations and the authors’ own insights and experiences have resulted in a new perspective on contemporary library work that has been translated into starting points for the future architecture of public libraries.

The authors have been working on the transition of library work and its consequences for the architecture and design of library buildings for quite some time.
