Turkish construction companies en route to Dubai for The Big 5
Construction is one of the key sectors in Turkey, being one of the main drivers of private and public investments in Turkey. Today, Turkish construction and engineering companies are able to design, erect, build and operate almost all kinds of civil and industrial projects such as dams, hydroelectric and thermal power plants, industrial plants, airports and seaports, large scale petroleum and natural gas pipelines, fertilizer plants, petrochemical complexes and refineries, motorways, tunnels, bridges, large housing projects, hotels and all

kinds of sophisticated buildings. The investment environment in Turkey is becoming increasingly attractive for both local and foreign investors, and a positive growth rate in construction is expected in the years ahead. After a period of rapid growth in the 1980s, the two economic crises of 1999 and 2001 had a negative impact on the construction industry. The sector experienced the start of a recovery in 2002. Increased economic
stability, decreasing exchange and interest rates and attractive long-term loans stimulated a demand for housing, playing a major role in this process. The sector grew by 13.9% in 2002, 7.8% in 2003, 14.1% in 2004, 9.3% in 2005, 18.5% in 2006 and 5.7% in 2007. Suffering under the effects of the global crisis, the sector experienced 8.1% and 16.1% decrease in 2008 and 2009 respectively, but made a remarkable progress and grew
by 18.3% in 2010. The growth trend in the industry continued and realized 11.5% in 2011. In 2012, global and regional economic development slowed down and due to the impact of this deceleration on construction industry the growth rate increased only by 0.6% in 2012 and reached 7.1% in 2013 and 5.2% in the first quarter of 2014. The constantly growing global competitiveness of Turkish contractors and building materials producers, contribute significantly to the balance of payments of Turkey. In the period between 19722014/6 months, Turkish contractors have undertaken almost 7500 projects in 103 countries, with a total value of some 285 billion USD. On the other hand Turkey is among the world’s leading producers of building materials. The concepts of advanced te12 Construction Kasım 2015
As a result of economic reforms Turkey has established a large and strong construction industry in a short time. chnology, on-time delivery, quick response, high quality, use of reasonably priced Turkish labor and goods, and equipment and building materials of international standards have enabled the Turkish construction sector to compete with the world. Turkey is a major producer of basic construction materials such as cement, building steel, timber, bricks, PVC, polyethylene, glass, ceramic tiles and sanitary ware, being especially strong and competitive in producing construction steel, cement, ceramic and glass products.
BASIC CONTRUCTION MATERIALS Iron and Steel Turkey has a huge iron and steel industry, which produces major inputs for the construction industry. Turkey’s steel production rose 34.1 million tons in 2011. There are 29 firms, and more than 35.000 people are employed in the sector. 6.2 billion tons of long products exported in 2011, and major markets for long products are the UAE, Iraq, Singapore, Egypt and Israel. Turkey produces different types of iron and steel pipes / pipe fittings. Turkey’s iron and steel pipes / pipe fittings exports reached US$ 1.8 billion in 2011. Major markets for iron and steel pipes / pipe fittings are the USA, Iraq, The United Kingdom, Czech Republic and Romania. Cement Cement, which is the basic
construction material, is produced by 67 cement plants in Turkey. 19 of them are grinding units and the rest are integrated units. After the privatization program, capacity expansion and investments in technology in the sector accelerated. These positive developments has brought the quality of cement up to international standards. In 2010 Turkey’s cement export ranked first in the world. In 2010 the Turkish cement industry reached an annual production of 62.7 million tons. Turkish cement industry provides employment for more than 15 thousand employees. In 2011, export earnings of the sector reached US$ 914 million. In 2011 major markets for Turkish cement exports were Iraq, Syria, Russia, Brazil and Israel. Natural Stones Turkey’s total probable marble reserves are 5.1 billion m3
–13.9 million tons. Turkey has a 33% share in the world’s marble reserves. In Turkish natural stone sector, there are about 1.500 mines, 2.000 plants and 9.000 workshops. The sector has also more than 300 thousand employees. Total natural stone exports were US$ 1.7 billion in 2011. Processed marble ranks first with US$ 814 million exports in natural stone exports. In 2011 the main countries which Turkey exported processed marble to were the USA, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Canada, and France. Ceramic Ceramics are amongst Turkey’s oldest and best-known products. Turkey’s share in world ceramic tiles production rose to 3,2%. There were also 30 thousand employments in the sector. Ceramic tile exports valued US$ 521 million in 2011.
Turkey ranks first in Europe in the production of ceramic sanitary ware, as well. Sanitaryware production reached 17 million units in 2011. Sanitary ware exports were about US$ 178 million in 2011. Turkey ranks first in Europe in the exports of sanitaryware in 2011. Glass The glass industry is one of the most important and highly developed industries in Turkey. Today, a group of companies, namely, Sisecam, accounts for approximately 90% of annual production. There are about 20 large and medium-scale firms dealing with production in the sector other than Sisecam and a certain number of small ones are also involved in production. The glass sector has approximately 20 thousand employees. The Turkish glass industry has a highly intensive production technology and a vast accumu13 Construction Kasım 2015
lation of know-how combined with a high level of production capacity, good quality and wide sales services. Sisecam ranks 6th in Europe and 13th in the world in the glass production capacity. The industry has shown an increasing trend in production in recent years and building glass production capacity was approximately 2,9 million tons in 2010. Exports of the glass industry have been increasing continuously and totaled US$ 124 million in 2011. The major export countries are Iraq, Azerbaijan, Israel, Turkmenistan and Russia. Plastic-based Building Products The domestic production of basic plastic raw materials has naturally resulted in a strong plastic processing industry in Turkey. At present, there are about 5,000 plastics processing companies, which are mainly small and medium-scale. In the plastic sector, more than 200 thousand people have been employed. In 2011, US$ 1.1 billion worth of plastic building materials were exported. The plastic building

The Turkish plastic sector today has attained world standards as far as raw materials, semi-finished and finished products are concerned. Finished plastic products are expected to comply with the related Turkish standards (TSE), International standards (ISO) and the standards set by the EU. Paints and Coatings Parallel to the developments in the construction, automotive and marine industries of Turkey, the paints and coatings industry has also developed and has became one of the most dynamic sectors of the Turkish Industry. In 2011 the total value of paints
and coatings’ exports reached US$ 364 million. The paints and coatings industry products were exported mainly to Iraq, Iran, Azerbaijan, Romania and Georgia. The paint sector has reached world quality standards. The number of firms which have ISO 9000 certification is rapidly increasing in Turkey. The dyes and paints sector has adapted itself to ecological standards which are particularly developed in Europe. EXPORTS Building materials exports reached about US$ 19.7 billion in 2011 with 20% growth. Iron and steel products with an export value of US$ 10 billion were the largest product group in sector exports. Within this group, iron & steel bars, sections and wires (US$ 6.2 million) rank first, and pipes and pipe fittings (US$ 1.8 million) rank second by value. Insulated wires with an export value of US$ 1.5 billion were one of the largest product groups. Plastic-based building products exports also ranked high with a value of US$ 1.2 billion in 2011.

Continuing the investments in Turkish market and foreign markets non-stop, Export Manager of Sel Dış Ticaret ve Kimya Sanayi A.Ş. Amir Kavil provided us information concerning the company and the product range by answering our questions. Karavil said: “We are producing every type of mastic, silicone, foam and similar products for automotive and construction fields. We were established in the year 1991. “We started as importers and we used to import the silicones of a famous foreign brand into Turkey. In the second half of the 90s the exportation faded away and replaced by industry and domestic production. Since that day up to now we can say that we have been investing in our country. It is actually quite an important value for a market such as ours in which production takes place under the counter. “We produce every type of mastic, silicone, foam and similar products for automotive and construction fields” Instead of listing all the chemistry terms one after another, I would like to give an answer that can be understood by anyone. We
produce every kind of mastic, silicone, foam, glue and similar products needed for a construction of a building, for the assembly of the hardwood, carpet, glass, mirror and shelves of bathroom and kitchen. For the past 3 years we have been investing in the automotive chemicals. New products are added to our product range for the automotive sector every passing day. “Products against the case of fire gained importance” I would like to give an answer to this situation in terms of global market. Now the products that are sensitive to environment with a characteristic called “fire stop”, that is to say noninflammable, in case of fire of any kind began to gain importance which already started in the world and which is becoming important in our country as well. These are actually glorious gains for our environment, our country and our world if we look at it from a wider perspective. Imagine a project of a gigantic building, you are paying an extra difference and you can save lives of the many in a possible destruction. ction facility and culture. It is a product created by the masters that understand mastic, foam, glues, PU products from a distance of 100 meters. It is the packaged form of an experience presented to the people. It is a product with sensitivity to environment that pays great care not to pollute and dirty it. In fact it is the transformation itself. In time I think that it will be used more by the people and that we will see altogether the other products joining it in the future. Selsil’s position in Turkish market I believe the most important feeling a product can offer to its customer is trust. Trust can be measured in 2 ways. The first of these is related with quality. What is quality? Quality is a term that bears the possibility of settling in the perception of the customers in time. That means in practice receiving almost no complaints, the product explaining itself without needing any words or explanations. However, the customer must not ask for a product from everybody by going door to door. The same brand must come to the same company’s customer with various product ranges and must know to offer the same product in same level in same quality and again in same price with a competitive manner. Think football as an example, winning the match is not enough, you would want to be a champion as well; you 18 Construction KasĹm 2015
cannot be a champion with merely a good forward or defense or mid-field. You must be successful at every field and must perform a team-play. The other condition for trust is the matter of how easy the products of the brand can be sold and turned into money. This is completely a different subject. Selsil Operations Abroad We are a company that has been trying to move further for 25 years. We expanded overseas with the power we received at home 15 years ago. Today we are exporting 80 something countries. We are trying to represent our country in many countries abroad in the best way we can. I think there are many things we will do and we have to do. 2016 goals and expectations There is an air of uncertainty in the world. We have elections in November 1 in our country. I hope for better developments in our country, region and the world. Eventually, the crisis and uncertainty have always had bad impacts for stability. If everybody try to perform their part better, I believe that the world get better as well. I wish the best for Turkey. I wish for a better and happier 2016 for everyone. I hope that it will be a better year in which our economy gets better and our people become happier than the year 2015.

Wall, chassis, roof, truss and other building components belongs to construction designed during project process are formed with the combination of screws and nuts that produced from special designed Hekim Structure ROBOT machine lines. There are 3 main groups within the fiber cement product range: HEKIMBOARD large scale natural cement sheets, TURKSIDING fiber cement planks and FIBERCEMENTLAM sheets laminated with cellulose or PET based foil. Some of the advantages are as below: Totally produced from natural materials, so it is nature, environment and human friendly and in A1 class “Incombustible” material class. It is non-asbestos, waterproof, imperishable,

NPFA 5000 Fibercement Board Fire Resistance Document and Metal Cabins Product Document are the only in our establishment production. In this respect, producing the innovative products within the scope of international quality standards is our essential principle. It is necessary for an inspection institute of quality standards in the entire sector both for the companies that have TSE K 118 document, which is constituted by Turkish Standards Institute and the other companies that hasn’t the relevant document. Can you please give us information about your Research & Development studies? And your investments? How did you spend last year? It has been a productive year, we have implemented successful collaborations across the globe and as well as in the domestic market, we have undertaken important projects and we strengthened our organization with our initiatives. We continued to pioneer; we have once again demonstrated our strength in the industry with the initiatives of 8-storey light steel building implementations, which will be held for the first time in Turkey; our fair participations in the value of making a difference in overseas and domestically; our projects implemented in North Africa, Asia, in the Middle-Eastern countries. In addition, we have laid the way in the sector at Hekim Yapı A.Ş. 3rd HekimBoard Facility Inauguration and Launch of Brands held in Suada. We have displayed the innovations in the sector, different point of views brought to architectural structure unprecedentedly during the fashion show consisting of front and insulation materials. We are proud of mentioning that our growth figures have been increasing with acceleration since our foundation year and providing our continuity of our service quality in parallel to increasing turnover with 30% of capacity increase. an investment of 2.25 billion USD. When completed, The 3rd Bosphorus Bridge will be the highest suspension bridge with four pillars height over 322 meters in the world and widest suspension bridge with a railway system with a width
of 59 meters. With a span width of 1.408 meters, the bridge will contain 8 lanes of motorway and 2 lanes of railway PERI is proud to be a key partner of this highly regarded project. What are your works and targets for the exportation? Our exportation works beginning in 1980s have made progress since the beginning of 1990s. In the direction of marketing and introduction activities, we closely followed our target market and final consumers by participating to the prominent abroad fairs. We are targeting to introduce our new products, to reach them to our final consumers and to increase our selling by introducing our firm in the best way since approximately 20 years in the international market. As of today, 29 per cent of our selling has been conducted abroad. The prominent countries among the exportation market are USA, Israel, Canada, England, France, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Bulgaria, Turkmenia, Saudi Arabia and Libya. There are also some countries to which we newly connect instead of some countries which can’t be exported due to political disturbances in our geography. Turkey is prominent among many countries with the product quality, technology and service concept in the world and European ceramic sector. When regarding the exporting countries, Turkey is the fourth exporter and the ninth producer after Turkey, China, Italia and Spain. The Turkish ceramic sector is in the good position in the world. We are aiming to present continually new products against our consumers in the bid international fairs such as CERSAIE, BATIMAT and COVERINGS which we attended and will attend during the year. A Great Threat For Polyester Sand Filters (WATER HAMMER)
Water hammer arises from the sudden changes in the velocity of the water inside the pipe system. Sudden change in the kinetic energy of water turns into potential energy and it generates shock waves accompanying a great loud noise. Pressure waves, knocking and vibration continue to expand to the every section of the plumbing until the energy is completely absorbed. In this situation, the system is in a great danger. Each components in the plumbing are effected from it. But the one that is effected most is the polyester filter which has

the greatest volume in the system. Waves create pressure when they are in positive direction and create vacuum effect when they are in negative direction. The filter which can resist the pressure proportionally is exposed to the vacuum which it has no resistance right after the pressure. It corrugates like in a suction of a plastic bottle. If the water hammer is huge enough, the explosion of the filter is inevitable. The water hammer demolishing each components of the system should be definitely prevented. How does water hammer occur ? 1. Due to the sudden movement of the static water in the plumbing, If the pumps are running when the control valves on the suction and discharge sides are in turned-on position, the static water suddenly gains kinetic energy and so the water hammer occurs. Whole pump manucturers recommend to bring the control valve on discharge side to turned-off position before running the pump and so it should be. In this position the electric motor consumes minimum energy. The pressure
in the pump is at maximum level when the valves are turned-off. But do not let it to mislead you. Because the pump does not consume energy as it’s not discharging. The motor does nothing more than shaking the water, self friction and internal leakage. When the pump reaches to full speed the valve should be turned on gradually to release the water to the system. We would like to emphasize it one more time; the suction side control valve of the pump should never be turned off. This valve is only used for uninstallation of the pump in case of a malfunction. If a flow rate adjustment is needed, it can be done only through the discharge side control valve. If you forget to turn on the discharge side valve after running the pump, the water will overheat as aresult of continuous swash and friction and this will damage the pump. If there is a danger of forgetting, both sides of the discharging valve can
be by-passed with a small diameter pipe and a valve. 2. Due to the the sudden stoppage of the water in motion in the plumbing, hile the system is running, turning a valve, a check valve off or shutting the pump down causes the air in the system to run out and so water hammer occurs. Time is a very important factor herein. It’s the change speed of momentum in question. How short the time is so intensive the water hammer to be. If you turn the valve off gradually you should be slower when you get 20% close to turned-off position. So that water hammer will not occur. If the pump is needed to be shut down, first the control valve on discharge side should be turned-off gradually. After it was turned-off completely the pump should be shut down. The case is that : The water flowing through the plumbing has a kinetic energy and it is formulated as (m.v²/2). In this formula “m” refers to volume and “v” refers to speed. That means ; as the volume and speed of the water increase the amount of energy increases too. Speed is a much more effective factor as it increases the energy proportional to its square.
How to prevent water hammer? The operator who performs according to the points mentioned above will prevent the water hammer substantially. The knowledge and experience of the operator can not prevent water hammers arising from the project designing of the plumbing or power breakdowns. Measures that will lessen the effects of water hammer, should be taken yet in project stage. Water hammer is a complex system containing valves and lots of other equipments. It can be necessary to consider malfunctions and operating under vacuum status. Enlarging pipe diameter can be taken into consideration to lessen the effects of water hammer to decrease the flow speed in the system. Air expansion tanks seems to be best solution as a pulse damper for swimming pools.
Technical Issues To Be Taken Into Consideration While Choosing The Filter The most important issues, which should be taken into consideration while choosing a sand filter, are the surface where water touches the sand and the height of the sand in the filter. The flow rate of water increases in a filter whose hub is wide and the upper side is narrow. In addition, if the height is low, the large hub diameter of the filter is of no importance. In order for the particles to be kept in the filter, the flow rate of water should be minimized as much as possible. Slow rate and high sand level are sine qua non conditions for fine filtration. For example, in a conical filter whose hub is Ø1600 mm and upper side is Ø800 mm, while the rate in the wide section is 50 m³/h, it will be 100 m³/h in the upper
section. Particles can not be kept at this rate and the dirt accumulated in the upper section is pushed to the sand ground. A significant pressure is formed against the water flow and the flow rate decreases significantly, and the water circulation time nee-
ded for the pool increases. It will be a more accurate approach to deem such a filter as a filter of Ø800mm. It is a known fact that the said conical filter is not accepted in any of the developed countries and it is a non standard product.
