FASHION

By Georgiana

W

hat would fashion be without trends? Just like a cake without the icing or a top without the cherry, it would be boring, confusing and so predictable! Luckily this is not the case, and designers understood long ago that true fashionistas need to be surprised every season with something new and challenging. So here we are, bringing you the 10 most coveted Spring-Summer 2013 trends that you should embrace in order to get those fashionable compliments you are lusting for:

4

Classy Checkmate This is one logical yet playful trend that wants us to wear clean checks and grids. Not as sophisticated and intricate as plaid, the geometric print (especially the black and white one) is big this season, as seen in the Louis Vuitton, Marni or Balmain collections. The only option is to pair your checkered outfits with accessories in black, white or a mix of both, because any other hue would clash, and would spoil the great optical effect. If you think a dress or a suit is too much, opt for checkered separates, and wear them with a high dose of confidence.

Dazzle with nonchalance in the new metallic trend that has taken fashion by storm this season! Whether you opt for pastel high-shine fabrics, brocade embellishments or mirrored effects, you need to sparkle this season in this nearly sci-fi trend. Burberry even gave us the option of the metallic trench coats, DNKY proposed reflecting pencil skirts, and Alexander Wang definitely designed his collection with the space-age in mind. Take the biggest challenge this season and sparkle in day time as well!

Stripes &

Stripes There is no doubt about it: the cell-worthy stripes have created a real fashion craze this season! Either horizontal or vertical, thin or thick, the stripes have a lot to say this season. Dolce & Gabbana, Michael Kors and Moschino are just a few brands that stylishly placed us ‘behind bars’ with their designs, and truth is they do look cool. Just keep in mind that horizontal stripes tend to make us look slightly wider than we are, and the vertical ones – longer. The choice is all yours!

Ruffle Blossom It cannot get more girlie than this! The fussy ruffles (or call them frills, if you like) are back with a vengeance, trying to conquer our summer wardrobes. In case you don’t have a problem looking like a seductive Flamenco dancer (who would??) you should try at least once this fantastic and über-feminine trend! Wear ruffles in every possible way: on the hem of a dress, on a oneshoulder top, or just around a sassy décolletage as seen at Balenciaga, Givenchy and Gucci.

Tux it Up 6

It’s androgynous, sexy and empowering and yes, we are talking about the modern tuxedo - the new party dress for bold women. A well fitted tux will make sure you stand out in any crowd, at any time, so if you love to have all eyes on you seek for inspiration in the sexy outfits seen at Saint Laurent, Just Cavalli or Celine. A slick tux jacket will add polish to any party look, so just do it like a lady in masculine attire!

Flower Me Bad The invasion of bold florals is already out of control. Flowers blossomed on catwalks, and we could nearly study Botanics watching close-ups of this season’s designs. Roses, daisies, chrysanthemums and other exotic flowers with impossible to pronounce names are demanding their space in our wardrobes, promising to give us cheerful and optimistic summer looks. Check Gucci, Etro and Marni for inspiration, they seem to know a thing or two about this romantic trend.

Punchy Hues

Flaunt that Midriff Or better said, those abs in case you are one hard-working lady that never misses one gym session. It’s finally time to flaunt your hardrock obliques wearing crop tops and thinking that all that hard work is finally paying off. The trend screams ‘90s, but this summer it looks more sophisticated and edgy, and the designs of Peter Som, Michael Kors or Louis Vuitton look rather cool than daring. Pair it with high waists and sit up straight!

Candy-colored outfits are the sweet side of this season’s fashion trends. Fresh mint, flaming red, intense purple, burning orange or sunflower yellow are ready to create a trendy rainbow in our summer wardrobes. Gucci mastered a great palette without fault, while Versace and Oscar de la Renta showed us we don’t necessarily have to wear black to look sexy. Don’t be afraid of wearing strong colors - they are meant to put you in the best of moods!

7

Summer Leather If you think you are going to be boiling under the blazing sun channeling this trend well, think again! Designers showed us great consideration when they launched leather as a summer trend, making it paper thin, cutting it into surprising shapes, and draping it in a feminine way. Plus, there is no limit for the colors: this summer, leather comes in the most unexpected and bold hues. Take a look at the collections signed Marni, Proenza Schouler or Fendi, and dare to be cool!

Lace Symphony An oldie but goldie, the lace trend brings once again the immediacy of supreme femininity. This summer the sheer fabric is dipped in bright colors, clearly stating that naĂŻve is the new naughty. Paired with tough leathers or masculine separates, it will give you a sophisticated look, without screaming femme fatale. Nearly all the designers showcased a little lace this season, but Saint Laurent, Roberto Cavalli and Valentino have truly outdone themselves.

Trends may come and go, and it only depends on you which ones you will embrace. Confidence and good taste are key no matter what you are wearing, so either you want to sparkle in metallics, seduce in lace or provoke in flirty cutouts, just make it look tasteful! Be the one who wears the trends, and not the other way round, and don’t forget about that fashionable smile!

MUSIC By Sophie Russell

T

hey say there’s something about a woman’s charm. Some unexplainable, subtle draw that is impossible to resist. If the tale is true, then Maggie Eckford is nothing less then captivating with her harmonies that haunt you and melodies that stay inside your head for days. It’s no wonder this Mississippi born singer-songwriter, who has long been infusing the pop genre with her southern roots, has already developed a faithful following of fans. “I think there’s something really valuable about staying true to your roots. I’m not a country singer, but there’s something about being Southern that still leaks through in my music.”

30

A writer and pianist since childhood, Maggie’s musical journey has taken her from Dixieland to Aussieland and back. “I attempted the college life for a few years, and I just had this epiphany one day that I was pursuing my plan B in life and not my plan A. Music was always my passion, and I knew if I didn’t pursue it whole-heartedly then, I may not ever. I had never been outside the country, so naturally I decided to quit college and movie to Sydney, Australia. Pretty practical, right?” While in Australia for 3 years, Maggie worked hard on cultivating her writing skills and even stumbled upon her current Canadian producer. This foundational season abroad helped Maggie reach her artistic stride; resulting in a sound that is all at once sunny and spirited, raw and innocent. “He believed in me (my producer), and told me if I could get my butt to Canada during the Christmas holidays, he would help me create my first record. The fact that someone believed in the songs that much in their barest form really gave me the push I needed. I made it happen, and I can honestly say that it was kind of a match made in heaven. His musicianship really brought my songs to life…it was the first time I was able to feel like my songs had the depth and the personality I wanted them to. Experiencing that for the first time was surreal.”

Maggie’s debut album “For What It’s Worth” was released in summer of 2010 and showcased her chameleon like ability to tackle any genre and maintain a common artistic thread. “I really didn’t have any expectations when I released my first album. I was just happy to put something out there that I was proud of.” She was able to land a licensing deal right off the bat with a Canadian company who saw how tv/film friendly her sound was. “I think the craziest thing that happened that year was getting contacted by the music directors from Apple. They asked me if I would be willing to let them use one of my songs ‘For What It’s Worth’ for an ipad commercial in Japan. Obviously the answer was yes…I still wonder how on earth they discovered my music.” Aside from the ipad commercial, Maggie’s music has since been heard on shows like Degrassi, The Ringer, The Fosters, Mob Wives, Teen Mom, MTV’s I Just Want My Pants Back, and more. Her music also plays regularly all over the country in places like Gap, Forever 21, Panera Bread, Pinkberry, etc. Maggie also placed 2nd in the International Songwriting Competition in 2012 amongst some 14,000 entries.

31

Since returning to American soil, Maggie has been hard at work. And what better place to settle in the states for a southern singer/songwriter than Nashville, Tennessee? “Honestly, it feels like home. I couldn’t be happier here. There is such a great community of writers and musicians… it’s a really inspiring place to be, and it still has a southern feel to it.” After successfully launching a kickstarter campaign to help fund the production process, Maggie released her sophomore album, entitled “Show and Tell” in October 2012. “I’ve released everything independently, and to be honest, it’s not cheap. I was a bit scared to ask my fans and supporters for help, but doing the kickstarter campaign was such an incredible experience for me. It really felt like my fans were a part of the entire process, and that they were championing me through it. I was so grateful to have so many people want to be a part of what I was doing. It made releasing the album that much more significant.” How does “Show and Tell” differ from Maggie’s first album? Well, we asked Maggie to describe it. “It’s a bit more upbeat...a bit more aggressive than the first album. It still has a folk feel to it, but songs like ‘Come and Go’ and ‘Two Worlds’ display a little bit of my rock and roll side. ‘Show and Tell’ has more of a quirky feel to it, and I love that. I think the album really illustrates a great variety of emotion while still staying within the vein of sound. It’s a good representation of me in that I’m inspired by multiple genres, and I think that my music and this album especially exemplify that.” 2013 has already been a year of transition and progression for Maggie. She recently signed a publishing deal with Razor and Tie Publishing in Nashville, and is currently focusing on her songwriting. “I think it’s important as an artist and songwriter to always be improving your songwriting ability. It’s a skill like anything else, and it is worth perfecting your craft. I listen to everything because I want to write everything. I want to better understand what qualities find their home in each genre, and what makes each genre unique. Of course my sound is my own and I will always stay true to who I am, but I find that artists and musicians can learn from each other in a lot of ways. It’s not a competition. It’s a community.

32

I will always push for that. The sooner we learn to respect each other’s art, the more our own art will speak for itself…I really believe that.” Maggie does plan on releasing another album or EP, but no dates have been solidified yet. “I think that the direction my music is headed in will happen naturally. I’m just writing tons right now-for myself, for other artists, and for tv and film. I’m just enjoying this season, and I think that the right songs for my next project will come.” Maggie plans on hopefully doing some small touring in the fall as well. “I’m excited about the future. I think my next project will be a little more electronic… possibly a bit more pop, while still staying true to who I am as an artist. The beauty of music is that it’s a huge world to be explored. I don’t necessarily agree with keeping yourself in a specific box. I really enjoy allowing my music to transition and form as I do throughout the different seasons in my life.“ While you would think Maggie’s talent in music alone was enough to keep our ears occupied, she also has a passion and quite the eye for fashion. She does a bit of wardrobe consulting on the side in Nashville and hopes to dive deeper in the world of blogging more this year. “I’m working on getting my own blog up and going soon, and my passion is really to help inspire practical, everyday outfits that are easily accessible and affordable. I love putting pieces together, and I want to create a blog that allows people to ask questions and get fashion advice. It’s all in the development process, but you can follow my instagram and/or twitter under Maggie Eckford for updates on new music, shows, and fashion.” We asked Maggie what her advice would be for young aspiring artists. “Honestly, do what you are most passionate about. Life is too short to settle for doing anything less than that. Don’t expect anything to fall in your lap. You have to work for it. If you want to be an artist or songwriter, work on your craft. Write all the time. Also know that your identity isn’t in what you do. My success as a singer/songwriter doesn’t define me…it’s your personhood and your heart that matter most. Music is a part of me, but it isn’t everything. People that get stuck in that mindset will just get disappointed and frustrated when things don’t happen. I still remind myself of that. It’s a good lesson to learn when you’re young.”

“The sooner we learn to respect each other’s art, the more our own art will speak for itself…I really believe that.”

Let Naluda Magazine take you into the world of UCLA record holder and Minnesota Vikings punter

By Sophie Russell

34

F

lashback to the three days of the NFL Draft. Prospects and former college standouts are getting selected left and right. As the third day of the draft rolls around, a small unit of draftees begin their anticipation. NFL hopeful punters and place-kickers begin to start checking their phones for any unknown phone numbers calling them, praying it is an NFL team. For many, it is a day of just that- hope. For others, such as former UCLA Bruin Jeff Locke, the day becomes one that will be forever sacred to them. Locke was chosen 155th overall in the draft. The first punter taken overall, and the first specialist at that, is already attracting some very encouraging and complimentary quotes from some of the NFL’S heavyweight’s. NFL. com’s senior analyst Gil Brandt says that “Locke is every bit as good as Bryan Anger,” the punter selected in the third round by the Jaguar’s in the 2012 draft. Furthermore, CBSsports.com’s Rob Ray believes Locke is a “legitimate NFL player.” For a first year rookie punter, these quotes will come as a bit of a relief, considering that until the day of, no one knows exactly how the draft will pan out. The several months between the player’s final college game and the draft are extremely difficult. Intensive work-

outs and physical advancement are coupled with interviews, workouts and phone calls with NFL coaches and executives. Jeff was always aware of Minnesota’s interest, but never quite sure where he would end up. The four year starting punter for the UCLA Bruins was not just a one-trick pony. Locke was also the career record holder for kickoff touchback percentage, which is ironic considering that Minnesota has those duties fulfilled from second year standout Blair Walsh (who interestingly enough came through the same kicking camp system as Locke, Chris Sailer Kicking). Even with all this attention and sudden fame, Jeff Locke never waivered from the character and drive that led him to draft day. From a very early age, loyalty and integrity were instilled in Jeff by his father, who served for over twenty years in the Air Force as a fighter pilot. Growing up in a home where being an alpha was in his blood, Jeff quickly became a standout in both soccer and football. However, once high-school came around and Jeff began to realize his ability punting the football, he knew where he needed to be. The comradery, intensity and competitiveness of the game was a natural draw for him.

35

On top of his father, another inspiration for Jeff is former NFL punter Jeff Feagles. Locke said, “I have studied every piece of film that there is on Feagles.” With his hard work studying Feagles, and working tirelessly with his private punt coach Coach Ignacio Brache, who Jeff has trained with for the last seven years, its obvious to see why Jeff Locke is soon to become one of the most talked about punters in the NFL. With all of the glitz and glamour of playing in the NFL, we asked Jeff what the best part of his job was. And as a true selfless and dedicated team player, he answered “being in a locker room with amazing team mates who create a great winning atmosphere.” Best of luck to Jeff and the Vikings this season!

Here are few of Jeff’s favorite things, Car - BMW 3 SERIES Food - Chocolate almonds Drink - Gatorade Vacation - New Zealand, as he is a big Lord of the Rings fan Book - Anything about Steve Jobs Color - Blue

he 2013 Vans US Open of Surfing is officially a wrap! Congratulations to Alejo Muniz and Carissa Moore, the 2013 Champions and Kolohe Andino and Courtney Conlogue, this year’s Runner-Ups. Today’s Highest Heat Score and Wave Score in the Womens World Tour event was by Courtney Conlogue, a 16.07 and a 9.27 in SemiFinal1. Today’s Highest Heat Score and Wave Score in the Mens Prime event were by Alejo Muniz, a 16.23 and an 8.43 in the Final.

Alejo Muniz

Wins ASP Prime Vans US Open of Surfing

A

lejo Muniz (BRA), 23, has won the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime Vans US Open of Surfing over Kolohe Andino (USA), 19, in peaky one-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at Huntington Beach Pier. The Vans US Open of Surfing is the fourth of eight ASP Prime events on the 2013 calendar, offering crucial points towards surfers’ ASP World Ranking and a coveted US$100,000 first place prize purse. Muniz would get the best of an opening exchange with Andino, belting a 8.43 for a series of seamless frontside turns. The Brazilian would quickly backup the ride on his backhand, scalping a 7.80 on a left breaking in to the pier to solidify the victory. “I’m so happy, I can’t believe it,” Muniz said. “Today marks the four-year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing and I’d like to dedicate this win to him. This is the biggest win of my career and it’s the biggest crowd I’ve ever surfed in front of. I knew I had to get scores and the waves were dying a little bit with the high tide and the ocean really cooperated with me today.” Muniz, who entered the Vans US Open ranked No. 24, had struggled to find a big result throughout the first half of his ASP season, but vaults to No. 15 on the rankings compliments of his win in Huntington Beach today. “I’ve been really focused because I hadn’t really had big results coming in to this event,” Muniz said. “I was putting everything in to this event and the work paid off. I focused more on myself rather than who I was surfing against and what scores they were getting. I’ve been getting good scores, but losing heats for some reason. I knew inside that I just needed to get the good waves and surf how I could. I’m stoked that I was able to do it this week. I think I surfed smart all week and it’s been amazing.”

60

Kolohe Andino was the last Southern Californian remaining in men’s competition and was in dangerous form entering the final. The progressive regular-footer would open his final exchange with a 7.77 but was unable to find the second score needed to surpass Muniz, finishing runner-up overall. “Congratulations to Alejo,” Andino said. “He surfed amazing all week. It would have been nice to win, but I just couldn’t find a second wave and I’m happy that I made the final.” Bede Durbidge (AUS), 31, unloaded signature power-surfing throughout Vans US Open, besting fellow ASP WCT standout Michel Bourez (PYF), 27, while advancing to the Semifinals. The Australian was unable to surpass Andino in the Semifinals, but hopes to take his success in Huntington Beach to the back half of the year. “Not many people would have picked me to make the Semifinals in this event so it was a good result for me,” Durbidge said. “I came over here to just get back to winning heats and I got four or five wins under my belt and I’ll just take that momentum in to the back half of the year.” Matt Banting (AUS), 18, proved to be darkhorse of the 2013 Vans US Open of Surfing, besting a flock of the world’s best surfers on his way to an incredible equal 3rd place finish. Banting went on to eliminate Jordy Smith (ZAF), 25, in the Quarterfinals, but was unable to surpass Muniz in their Semifinals clash. Banting’s result launches him from from 92 to 41 on the men’s ASP World Ranking. “I’ve dreamt of that heat against Jordy (Smith) my whole life and to surf against him and to beat him, I’m so happy,” Banting said following his Quarterfinals win. “I was just wishing that no waves would come and to just better that 3.77 on my final wave. I’m just frothing. I’m not trying to qualify just yet. I’m taking it heat-by-heat and to beat Jordy, anything after that would have been a bonus.” MEN’S FINAL RESULT: 1 - Alejo Muniz (BRA) 16.23 2 - Kolohe Andino (USA) 14.54

Carissa Moore C

arissa Moore (HAW), 20, has won the Vans US Open of Surfing over local favorite Courtney Conlogue (USA), 20, in peaky one-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at Huntington Beach Pier, taking the No. 1 position on the ASP Women’s World Title Race. Stop No. 6 of 8 on the 2013 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour (WCT), the Vans US Open of Surfing plays both a crucial role in deciding the 2013 Women’s World Champion and qualification for next season’s ASP Top 17. Moore got off to a dominant start in her final clash, earning an 8.17 and 7.83 to launch out to an early lead. The talented Hawaiian would hold on to the win despite a late-heat rampage from Conlogue, solidifying her third ASP Women’s WCT event win this year. “To be honest I’m a little shocked right now because I thought Courtney (Conlogue) won when the crowd erupted on that last wave,” Moore said. “I let her go and I had priority and it was a bad decision, but I’m stoked that it worked out in my favor. I was happy to be in the final and Courtney’s in the title race and I had fun, but I was definitely nervous at the end of that heat. It’s such an honor to win this event in front of this big crowd. I feel amazing!” Conlogue put in an amazing showing in front of her hometown crowd, besting then ratings’ leader Tyler Wright (AUS), 19, in the Semifinals. The regular-footer would fight hard to surpass Moore in the back half of the heat with her best two rides coming in the last five minutes. Unfortunately for the Californian, she was unable to surpass Moore’s opening heat efforts, finishing runner-up overall. “It was definitely an amazing heat and Carissa (Moore), she’s been surfing really well,” Conlogue said. “With everyone screaming and the crowd on the pier I was definitely wanting to win. I was trying to be progressive and surfing the best that I could.”

62

Wins Vans US Open of Surfing, Takes ASP WCT Rankings Lead Conlogue, who now sits at No 3 on the ASP Women’s WCT, is hoping to carry her momentum in to the final two events of the season in an attempt to rally for the 2013 ASP Women’s World Title. “It feels really good to get second and I’m looking forward to going back to Europe,” Conlogue said. “Going to Hossegor is going to be exciting so it’s nice to get a result here and I’m looking forward to it.” Tyler Wright (AUS), 19, was dominant throughout the Vans US Open of Surfing, earning her careerbest result in Huntington Beach. The talented Australian’s run would end in the Semifinals, as she was stopped short by in-form local Courtney Conlogue, finishing equal 3rd overall. “I did the best I could with what I had out there and Courtney (Conlogue) caught the best waves,” Wright said. “A 3rd is the best result I’ve ever had here at the US Open and I’m happy with that.” Pauline Ado (FRA), 22, matched her career-best result and crucial points towards her requalification campaign with an equal 3rd place finish. Ado put in a stellar performance throughout the Vans US Open of Surfing, but was unable to surpass Moore in their Semifinals heat. Ado now sits No. 10 among the ASP Top 17 due to her efforts. I’m a bit disappointed with my heat today,” Ado said. “I couldn’t find any good waves and feel like I didn’t surf my best, but I’m stoked on the result overall. I’ve had a great week at this event and a 3rd is putting me in a better position before the last two events in Europe.” WOMEN’S FINAL RESULT 1 - Carissa Moore (HAW) 16.00 2 - Courtney Conlogue (USA) 15.27

By Todd Spear

T

he Tesla Model S has turned the automotive world on its head since its retail debut in mid-2012. The Silicon Valley automaker seems content to defy every possible expectation normally associated with modern car building. From its unabashedly lux looks and trailblazing electric powertrain, to its pricing structure and available finance options, and its dealerships and garages, Tesla Motors is cultivating a brand image that is every bit as innovative as its famous namesake. The Model S was named Motor Trend’s 2012 Car of the Year and scored an outstanding 99/100 rating in Consumer Reports the same year. A series of recent, favorable quarterly earnings reports from Tesla Motors’ CEO, Elon Musk, have made the company one of the fastest rising stars on Wall Street.

71

In light of the success of its Model S, Tesla has flooded the mainstream media, and has managed to wow even the most skeptical of automotive enthusiasts in a way that no other electric has before, including the once-venerable, now-floundering Fisker Karma. Tesla has broken the mold, it would seem, to establish itself not only as the most notable electric luxury car so far, but also, as the most celebrated thing to come from America on four wheels since the original Mustang inspired a legion of pony cars, nearly fifty years earlier. But can the Model S live up to its own hype?

amazing battery can be charged anywhere that has an outlet, including public charging stations, adding up to 100km per hour (when on a high amp 240V socket) to the range of the vehicle.

CHARGED WITH STYLE Unlike the Fisker Karma, the Model S looks like a ‘real’ car. Its body panels have spent serious amounts of time in the wind tunnel, allowing the Model S to have the second-lowest drag coefficient in its class, behind the Mercedes-Benz CClass.

ELECTRIFYING SPECS The Tesla Model S starts at $62,400 and features an all-electric design that provides an effective range of up to 285 miles on a single charge. The car is offered with a choice of either a 60- or 85-KWh computer-controlled, lithium-ion battery powering its single-piece electric motor, and displacing 362- or 416hp, respectively. There’s also a Performance model ($87,400) that boosts speed from light-to-light (0-60mph in 4.2 seconds) and tops out at 130mph.

The car’s cabin is topped by an all-glass panoramic roof that blocks out sunrays and heat. The roof opens up wider than any other sedan to let the sunshine in on those perfect, blue sky days. One of the most talked about aesthetic features of the Model S is the recessed door handles that protrude only when the key-holder approaches the vehicle, aided by the included high-tech key fob.

Under the hood there is no transmission – at least, not as most people understand the word ‘transmission.’ The motor features a single, fixedspeed gear in place of a traditional gearbox. A 110/240V charging port hides beneath an unassuming fuel cap, and provides 10Kw of charge per hour, when plugged-in. The Model S’s rather

72

Some drivers might be disappointed that the Model S suffers from ‘wind tunnel syndrome.’ It carries on the troublesome trend that the average car is starting to look strikingly similar from one maker to the next in this age of wind tunnel and computer-aided design. Glancing at the Tesla from its side profile makes it hard to differentiate the model from recent designs by the likes of BMW, Honda, and even Kia. It would seem that all that aerodynamic R & D

testing is leading the world toward a singular form factor for the four-door sedan, and the brave designs of Tesla Motors are clearly not exempt. Then again, futuristic stylistic nods have done little to help the ill-fated Karma.

STEP INTO THE FUTURE Inside, the Model S lives up to what one would expect from an ultra-modern, all-electric luxury vehicle. The dash is adorned with a particularly scifi-looking 17-inch touchscreen display, providing the driver with diagnostics, infotainment, and GPS (the latter of which is powered by Google Maps). Various power monitoring modes are also presented on-screen, so the driver can always know when it’s time to charge the battery.

The Model S accesses online content and can browse the web thanks to the inclusion of 3G wireless support. The car’s side mirrors contain Wi-Fi antennas that can tap into localized wireless networks, and the car itself can function as a hot spot. Beyond its robust electronic complement, the Model S’s interior is dressed all in hide, with wooden trim pieces and soft, futuristic backlighting. The cockpit’s design strikes a unique balance of creature comforts, luxurious materials, state-ofthe-art digital integration, and appealing stylistic minimalism. If the exterior may rightly be considered stylistically safe by some, the interior is pure post-modernity in terms of design, and the result is exceptionally easy on the eyes.

73

THE ROAD TO OWNERSHIP Tesla Motors is forging ahead through uncharted territory when it comes to purchasing a Model S, too. The company has cut out the middle man – the independent dealer – that virtually all other manufacturers employ, opting instead to take orders online and at a handful of company-owned dealerships. Such outlets are popping up at highend shopping malls in major cities. These dealerships usually house only a couple of cars for test driving, with buyers plopping down $2,500 to place an order, only to take delivery some time later, as there is a growing waiting list.

74

For those looking to finance a Model S, Tesla has partnered with a variety of lenders who will stretch the hefty payments out over as much as 72 months. Tesla touts that the Model S can be had for $580 per month, including fuel savings, a figure it calls the ‘effective monthly cost.’ The actual number – not factoring gasoline savings – is closer to $900 a month.

WHAT ABOUT THE ALL THE HYPE? Fortunately, when it comes to engineering and performance, the Tesla delivers on everything it claims about the Model S. It’s a (comparatively)

long-range electric vehicle with a strong dose of luxury styling that still retains a noticeable dollop of practicality, cementing the Model S as a legitimate competitor for marques like MercedesBenz, BMW, and Audi. The only area where the Model S falls short is when it comes to the true cost of ownership.

Sure, owners won’t spend a dime on gas, and will be eligible to receive anywhere from $7,500 to $15,000 in tax rebates (in the USA); but everyone would still be happier if Tesla would just keep it honest, and let the truth of the nearly $900-amonth payment be told, so as to not belie the hype the Model S – perhaps the greatest EV thus far – has otherwise earned.

first time spa experience can be intimidating for anyone, but it seems that men are especially daunted by the notion that their first spa treatment could result in embarrassment due to not having a full grasp on the protocol for attending the spa.

The Experience When you arrive at the Blue Spa you immediately notice the unique Theater entrance, so from there its quite an experience almost as if your going to the movies. Previously the building was the La Reina Theater. Moving into the magnificent reception area and being greeted by the very friendly staff i then proceeded to filling out all my documentation,I then felt ready and relaxed for my spa experience. I first went into a small room where the consultant explained to me the different vitamin shots I could receive and which one’s were the best for me, I went with the Vitamin Power shot and I didn’t even feel it, and yes they were two shots. Then i went to another room for the Metropoliman Facial and I just can say WOW. I mean I went there with the idea of being at a Spa,but when your in L.A. and the traffic is chaotic and every day life just eats you up there is nothing better than just escaping to the this ultimate experience with amazing results. This facial gives you an extraordinary exfoliation that smoothes and tone’s the face for a healthy glow without any girly shine. Naluda magazine has put together an etiquette guide that can be applied to almost anyone, but focuses particularly on the concerns men have before treating themselves or being treated to a great day at the spa!

Etiquette Tips for Men: Arrive early

Turn your cell phone off

It is best to arrive 15 to 20 minutes before your treatment. This gives you time to enjoy the facilities that might be available to you.

Keep your mobile on silent or turn it off completely. Although you may not be bringing your phone into the treatment room, it is still best not to have it buzzing or ringing.

Shave before your facial To get the full benefits of a facial it is best to give your aesthetician full access to your face. A clean shave will allow for your entire face to be treated with the same care. Areas that are prone to irritation from razor burn and ingrown hairs are issues that your aesthetician can treat during your facial.

For more information on their treatments and services go to: www.bluespa.com

FITNESS By Dara Sandrini

What do you do for exercise?

S

ome of us enjoy trail running on a beautiful mountain or hillside. Others of us feel alive and full of stamina in the weight room. And others find energy and vitality though yoga. What is your fitness vice? Whatever you choose to do to stay in shape, you deserve a round of applause! Any form of proper exercise serves the body well; decreasing stress in our daily lives, increasing our immune systems, preventing disease and enhancing our fitness potential. So before I make any further recommendations, let me first say, “Keep up the good work!” Now... Are

your ready for the Total Fitness Package?

If you REALLY want to achieve your full fitness potential, consider incorporating all four of the following forms of fitness, into your overall weekly workout regimen:

Strength Conditioning / Weight Training The benefits derived from weight training are numerous. As we grow older, our bones require exercise to build them and make them stronger. Weight training maintains bone density and helps to burn fat. By building your muscles through weight training you are strengthening bones by the muscles and tendons, which produces bone growth. Women in particular run the risk of osteoporosis and weight-bearing exercises are proven

82

to decrease that risk. Further, this form of exercise treats diabetes, heart disease, metabolic syndrome and more. And of course, with weight training comes increased self-esteem! It’s an excellent form of exercise that keeps us mentally and physically fit. We love to see the muscle definition come in, the pounds drop off, and we feel more confident about our outward appearance. Even better, we feel great on the inside! Weight training is a very important part of achieving one’s full fitness potential. It’s time to pick up those weights!

Cardio Conditioning/Endurance Training Cardiovascular exercise is crucial. Simply put, “cardio” is any movement that gets your heart rate up and increases blood circulation throughout the body. Fat loss happens when more calories are burned than consumed, and cardio burns calories. It’s that simple. But burning fat and calories is not the only reason cardio is so crucial to your exercise regimen. Cardio helps your heart. By getting the blood-flow pumping, you are strengthening your heart muscle so you can achieve a much healthier lifestyle. You are also increasing your metabolism. Adding intense interval sprints (known as HIIT) will really speed up your metabolic rate helping further your weight loss. Cardio exercise also fights off fatigue and stimulates the hormones in your body known as the “feel good hormones.” Studies have shown that cardio exercise reduces depression and people who do regular cardio exercises have a more positive outlook on life! Being positive is a good thing.

83

Flexibility How flexible is your body? Can you bend over and touch your toes? Flexibility is often overlooked in our fitness regimen. We get lazy and we don’t always stretch. I am here to tell you, flexibility is a crucial ingredient to reaching our full fitness potential. Flexibility enhances performance and reduces your risk of injury. When and how to stretch is always an important consideration. There are two types of stretching: dynamic stretching and static stretching. As a general rule, dynamic stretches are used as part of a warm-up, while static stretches (or PNF flexibility training) is used for increase of motion. Static stretching, such as stretches done through a yoga program, effectively increases range of motion of joints over time, thereby reducing risk of injury. Other benefits from this form of exercise include increased lubrication of the joints, ligaments and tendons, muscle toning and peace of mind.

Balance Ah! The final factor necessary to achieve your full fitness potential. Balance. As we grow older we tend to lose our balance. One in three persons over the age of 60 will experience a fall. Balance exercises are required to improve your body awareness, alignment, control complex movements, and react and respond to the environment to avoid falling. Adding resistance exercise training and flexibility exercise training to your workouts (as already mentioned) will improve your ability to control muscular forces needed to maintain balance. Equipment is readily available at most gyms, designed to combine balance and conditioning exercises. The bosu ball for example, is an excellent tool for practicing balance while strength conditioning. So, there you have it. The Four Factors you can incorporate into your workout regimen, to reach your full fitness potential. Go get ‘em!

Celebrity Golf Tournament July 15th 2013 alexthomasfoundation.com by Daniel Zahoul

- INTERVIEW What’s your background? I was born in Brisbane, Australia and moved to Ireland at the age of 16 to pursue an Irish dance career. Two years later I toured with Michael Flatley in his new show “Celtic Tiger”, where we played venues such as Madison Square Gardens- New York and Wembley Arena- London. I later moved to Los Angeles to live for 6 years, and now currently reside in New York City. What inspired you to create “IRELAND- The Show”? After years of touring with Irish shows such as Lord of the Dance, I decided it was time to pursue a more challenging career, so I went into producing. I like being my own boss, and overcoming business obstacles. What do you feature in the show? “IRELAND- The Show!” is a two-hour music and dance presentation featuring some of the world’s best talent. The show has solid group numbers as well as solo performances from each cast member. We don’t have any principal dancers… everyone is the “star” at some point during the performance.

86

Tell us about the music The music is 100% live. We use no prerecorded music or click tracks in the show, which keeps it authentic. We’ve brought Irish fireside traditions to the international stage. It gives me great pleasure to keep tradition alive. Tell us about your cast IRELAND- The Show features some of the worlds finest Irish Dancers, Musicians and Singersmost of whom are World and All-Ireland Champions. In order to maintain an impeccable standard, we recruit only the world’s very best talent. We currently have cast members performing in our show from Ireland, England, Australia, Canada and the United States. If we are to succeed against our competition, it is only logical that we cast the pinnacle of talent in our production. Starting a show this size, what would it all cost? As with any live production, the upfront costs can be enormous. Our costumes alone were extremely expensive, and we’ve just ordered a new stage set, which is being manufactured in China. Then there is cast wages, travel, accommodation and insurance to be taken into consideration- all of which cost a fortune. We had several investors in the beginning, including myself who financed the show.

87

How long has the show been running and which cities is it touring? The show premiered at the Granada Theatre in Santa Barbara, California in July 2011. We will be embarking on a US tour from November followed by a tour to Australia and New Zealand. I’m particularly excited to be bringing the production to Brisbane, my hometown in Australia. Where are you based, and how many miles have you travelled since this all started?

he predicament: your significant other, best friend, etc.

asks to go out to dinner, but you’ve been trying to change your lifestyle and get fit…So what are you to do??? Do you cheat? Try to eat before, so you’re not hungry then? Can you order just a water? Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be a catch 22, or even stressful. You can eat out and still keep to your goals! The following 10 tips are ones that I adhere to when dining out. Don’t stress! Use these tips on your road to a happy healthy meal!

HEALTHY

Look at the calories!

California restaurants must provide the calorie and macronutrient counts in all of their dishes, whether it is in the menu or on a separate guide. Once you have glanced at them, re-evaluate. Is that meal really worth it? The answer doesn’t have to be “no” either. I have tips for that too!

Split the meal

Does your dining partner want the same thing? If so, split it! That 1000 calorie dish is now 500 for you. Not so much of a cheat! If splitting isn’t possible, ask for a box and immediately box half. Have the other half the day after! 2 meals for one!

Are you planning on dessert?

Coming from a girl with a crazy sweet tooth, this is the pinnacle question! If you’re planning on having a dessert, plan your main dish around it. Maybe a salad with a lean protein is a better option. Save those carbs on a good brownie!

Modify your meal!

Sometimes a salad at your favorite restaurant can have more calories than the burger! Ask for modifications! Your server is happy to accommodate your needs. If ordering a salad, consider your dressing and have it on the side. Having dressing on the side helps you monitor how much you are really eating. Other salad modifications include: no cheese, no croutons, grilling the protein (instead of frying it), and using lemon or balsamic vinegar as a dressing substitute. If ordering a burger or sandwich, consider leaving the top half of the bun off of the burger. Your burger will be just as delicious with fewer calories. Other burger modifications include: ordering a grilled turkey/chicken burger instead of beef, no cheese, sauce on the side (so you can monitor the amount of mayonnaise or BBQ sauce you use), or having it lettuce wrapped.

Side Dishes You order a dish with a couple of sides. Instead of mac n’ cheese, try finding a good carb and some grilled veggies as side dishes. Unless you really have a craving for mac n’ cheese, and you can afford that cheat! Some good carb dishes include: boiled red potatoes, sweet potatoes, brown rice, and quinoa. Bread Basket Dilemma If you know your meal is going to be pretty carb heavy, forgo the bread basket or chips and salsa. Ask your server not to put it on the table, so you aren’t tempted. You won’t miss those extra calories when you know you’re getting a delicious dish instead!

Ordering multiple appetizers Appetizers are a great way to try multiple things and in small amounts. They force you to eat a little slower and by doing that; you give your brain a chance to catch up to your belly. You’ll know you’re a comfortable full, instead of a gut-busting full!

It is OKAY to cheat!

That’s right! I said it! It is okay to cheat!!! This is actually the most important idea. Don’t stress if you really want that plate of steak enchiladas and an extra side of guacamole. If you’ve not had a cheat or two that week, it is fine to give into that craving. There is no need to torture yourself or feel guilty when you have been eating very well the entire week. Move on from the meal and get back to your eating plan right after!

Drink your water! Most people forget to drink water at meal times. Most hunger is actually misplaced thirst. Aim to drink a glass before dinner so you can enjoy your food and know what you’re eating is out of hunger and not dehydration. A lot of restaurants use a ton of salt to season the food, so the extra water will help flush that out of your system. Walk!

92

Try walking before or after your meal. Maybe try a local restaurant you can walk to. You’ll enjoy some real conversation on the way! If the restaurant is further away, suggest a walk post-dinner to get that metabolism going.

Most importantly, put your phone down during the meal! Enjoy some human interaction and give your dining buddy the attention they deserve. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Live Journal, and what have you will still be there when you’re finished. Enjoy your meal and relax!!!

THE FEED

I

t’s been a few months that my friend has been single. My friend, in this situation, is not some metaphoric friend that is really just me hiding behind a mask of shame. This friend is a real person who I have seen roll through a plentiful amount of emotions. Upon the abrupt ending of his relationship, he was forced to comprehend a new way of life, which proved to be difficult, with the pain being eased only by a mix of friend’s advice, and cork-popping. I’m sure has kind of situation is difficult for everyone, as well, considering we all have been through a breakup before. What I have come to notice in the months preceding summer is that people were jumping ship from their relationships a bit more frequently. Maybe they spent a good chunk of time at the gym so their beachready bodies are ego boosting them to believe they will find someone better? Or, maybe they have reached their limit, and something in the stars or the weather or a happenstance meeting at Ruby’s made them shift their focus and make an adult decision? Regardless, remember that we’re dealing with humans here, kids. Emotions. We live to love and love to live (well, we eat to live, but I love to eat, so it’s pretty much the same). It seems that I’ve reached an age where lots of landmarks are happening for people. I’ve seen a lot of graduates (Congrats on that, by the way, because I graduated from fashion school in 2009 and forgot that the rest of my peers didn’t do the same). I’ve seen a lot of babies, which shocks me to think that someone can have a birthdate of 2012 and be alive. However, most frequently do I see the varying partnerships people experience, that is then shared to the world on Facebook. I thought about discussing the frivolous handling of a specific relationship, but really, everyone has those moments. We go through these crazy situations where you’re waiting on a text from someone hoping that the next buzz isn’t going to be your mother asking if you need anything from the supermarket. Then you spend years with the person you so heavily courted, or depending on the situation, courted you. In this time, you see the best, worst, and everywhere in between of this person, their family, and their friends (who just aren’t as cool as yours, don’t worry). We are

all geared toward the social goal of marriage because at one point, your partner of 8 years needs to freakin’ commit himself to you already! Obviously, I don’t speak for the people who don’t need marriage to validate their relationship, but you don’t count because you’re from Mars, or even more neutral - Norway. Anyway, when you get to a stage in your life where you need to figure out the next step, sometimes people can’t wrap their mind around a stagnant position of personal growth as themselves paired with someone else, so they bail, presumably thinking, “if I don’t want to be with you forever, why should I be with you now?” It’s not the clearest way of thinking, but who am I to correct the way a person reaches a deal with themselves? We live and we learn, and their decisions, though irrational, do not define you or your relationship. Now, if you were a dick, that’s different, and you deserved it. There are times, in fact, when a relationship was just not meant to happen. Where the proof is in the pudding - you hate the way they do their hair, or that they bite their toenails (seriously? clippers are like, fifty cents at Target), or even the way they fold their underwear. You’ve probably been percolating with these pet peeves for the longest time, but the partner is such a good person! Maybe they’re just not right for you. So they need to go find the person that will accept them as the scrunchie-wearing, toenail-biting mess they are. That way, you can spend your time more wisely searching for the person that will be the yin to your yang; the nutella to your ANYTHING (you know I’m right). We have a short time in this life, and in no way should it be spent on something wasteful. You should be free to do as you please, with the joint support and cooperation with your partner so that you can coexist happily and let the two lives merge into one naturally. When that time seems to be an impossible goal, make the mutual decision to love and let go. That is, unless we’re talking about George Clooney, then don’t you DARE let that go. Relationships are gorgeous and exciting and irritating and stupid and great, all at the same time. We spend days single wondering when the next person to find us will be, regardless of if it’s for the

night, or for ever. However, relationships are also like DNA, each one very different and represents the owner. To grade each relationship on a scale to that of someone else is difficult, if not impossible. The best we can do for each other is to support our friends as they make their way through a seemingly murky swamp of douchebags to the other side, where the grass is greener, and there will already be a cute picnic or something waiting for you to arrive (don’t forget the Pinot). I find that nobody will be perfect, nobody will be exactly what

you need, and nobody will be you. Everyone has their idiosyncrasies, and we all need to live for ourselves so that when the time comes to meet the person of our dreams, we will be happy, open, and ready to fit into something to wear to the Oscar’s.
