The body is a complex organism that has the ability to heal itself—if only you listen to it and respond with proper nourish-ment and care.In spite of all the abuse our bodies endure whether through exposure to environmental toxins, poor nutrition, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, or inactivity they still usually serve us well for many years before signs of illness may start to appear. Even then, with a little help, they respond and continue to function. The human body is the greatest machine on earth. Nerve signals travel through muscles at speeds as fast as 200 miles per hour. The brain puts out enough electric power to light a 20-watt lightbulb. If your leg muscles moved as fast as your eye muscles, you could walk over fifty miles in one day. According to scientists, bone is among the strongest building materials known to humankind.

Think of your body as being composed of millions of tiny little engines. Some of these engines work in union; some work independently. All are on call twenty-four hours a day. In order for the engines to work properly, they require specific fuels. If the type of fuel given is the wrong blend, the engine will not perform to its maximum capacity. If the fuel is of a poor grade, the engine may sputter, hesitate, and lose power. If the engine is given no fuel at all, it will stop. The fuel we give our bodies’ engines comes directly from the things we consume. The foods we eat contain nutrients. These nutrients come in the form of vitamins, minerals, en-zymes, water, amino acids, carbohydrates, and lipids. It is these nutrients that sustain life by providing us with the basic materials our bodies need to carry on their daily functions.

OCTOBER 2020 - 001

Individual nutrients differ in form and function, and in the amount needed by the body; however, they are all vital to our health. The actions that involve nutrients take place on microscopic levels, and the specific processes differ greatly. Nutrients are involved in all body processes, from combating infection to repairing tissue to thinking. Although nutrients have different specific functions, their common function is to keep us going. Research has shown that each part of the body contains high concentrations of certain nutrients. A deficiency of those nutrients will cause the body part to malfunction and eventually break down—and, like dominos, other body parts will follow. To keep this from happening, we need a proper diet and appropriate nutritional supplements. Brain function, memory, skin elasticity, eyesight, energy, the ratio of lean-to-fat tissue in the body, and overall health are all indications of how well the body is functioning. With the help of the proper nutrients, exercise, and a balanced diet, we can slow the aging process and greatly improve our chances for a healthier, pain-free—and possibly longer—life. If we do not give ourselves the proper nutrients, we can impair the body’s normal functions and cause ourselves great harm. Even if we show no signs of illness, we may not necessarily be healthy. It simply may be that we are not yet exhibiting any overt symptoms of illness. One problem most of us have is that we do not get the nutrients we need from our diets because most of the foods we consume are cooked and/or processed. Cooking food at high temperatures and conventional food processing destroy vital nutrients the body needs to function properly. The organic raw foods that supply these elements are largely missing from today’s diet.

The past decade has brought to light much new knowledge about nutrition and its effects on the body, and the role it plays in disease. Phytochemicals, also known as phytonutrients, are one example of the results of this research. Phytochemicals are compounds present in plants that make the plants biologically active. They are not nutrients in the classic sense, but they determine plants’ color, flavor, and ability to resist disease. Researchers have identified literally thousands of phytochemicals and also have developed the technology to extract these chemical compounds and concentrate them into pills, powders, and capsules. These are called nutraceuticals the newest type of dietary supplement. Your body’s nutritional needs are as unique to you as your appearance is. The first essential step toward wellness is to be sure you are getting the correct amounts of the proper nutrients. By understanding the principles of holistic nutrition and knowing what nutrients you need, you can improve the state of your health, ward off disease, and maintain a harmonious balance in the way nature intended. This magazine should provide you with a clear understanding of the vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, phytochemicals, and other nutrients you need, as well as important information on natural food supplements, herbs, and products that enhance nutrient activity to keep your Immunity strong. Eating a healthful diet and supplementing your diet with appropriate nutrients will help to assure that your organs, cells, and tissues get the fuel they need to operate properly and to keep your Immunity well. The nutrients suggested in this magazines promote healing and wellness by allowing the body to heal and reinvigorate itself.

Immunity The mind, in addition to medicine, has powers to turn the immune system around. Immunity is the buzzword today and rightly so.Clearly how strong our body’s disease fighting system is what determines whether we will succumb to myriad infections, and also decide just how fast we are able to get out of it and with least damage to milder symptoms. We are all born with an innate immunity, but this needs to be propped up on an everyday basis to keep it fighting fit.Immunity is not built overnight but it takes minimum 6 months . From my view, healthy and robust immunity is built on the following 4 pillars: Lifestyle habits, Exercises, Attitude, Nutrition Lean is the way to be healthy and disease free!!! Lifestyle habits:Ensure having a consistent sleep schedule that helps you in maintaining your cardiac rhythm.Do left nostril breathing for good sleep. Exercises:Due to covid if you cannot go out ,walk at home with a music,do breathing exercises like paramshavas and Parmanan, even simple stretches or floor exercises are good. Attitude have a positive mind and for that you can do meditation ,listen to music ,read books and develop hobbies to make you feel happy.

Nutrition It is important to understand the factors which play a role in regulating and boosting Immunity is Gut health: About 80% of our immune system begins in the gut! So, taking care of your gut health is taking care of your immune health. Paying attention to the gut, as well as the other three pillars, is the main way we maintain a healthy microbial community (microbiomes). These healthy bugs are disease fighting and help keep our immune system strong. To promote a good gut we should eat traditional foods like beetroot and carrot kanji, leftover rice fermentation, homemade dahi, idlis and dosas, pickles, include cereals ,legumes and rainbow colour vegetables on your plate. Some more foods to improve our immune system are foods rich in antioxidants and minerals are Rich in vitamin A Cereals, legumes, yellow and orange coloured vegetables and green leafy vegetables Rich in Vitamin B (B6, B9, B12) : Cereals, legumes, green leafy vegetables, fruits, nuts, soy milk, dairy products fish, chicken and egg Rich in Vitamin C Orange, lemon, guava, kiwi, gooseberry, cauliflower, tomato, capsicum and mint Rich in Vitamin E Nuts, green leafy vegetables and vegetable oils Rich in Vitamin D Egg, fatty fish, milk and its products Exposure to sunlight is also help improve Vitamin D levels ,exposure to sunlight between 11am to 1pm Rich in iron: Cereals, legumes, dry fruits ,like munakka and black rasins fish, and chicken Rich in zinc: Wheat germ, dried beans, nuts, tofu and Sea foods Rich in selenium: Cereals, nuts, mushrooms, meat and chicken Rich in antioxidants, condiments and spices: Garlic, onion, ginger, pepper and green tulsi or mint tea.Just to review, big take homes here:good nutrition and good sleep . “WE ARE WHAT WE EAT AND WE ARE WHAT WE THINK”. IMMUNITY & SKIN IMMUNITY has become the 'IN' word today, as the World is grappling with THE COVID-19 pandemic since half a year now. The pandemic situation has been instrumental in making us aware and realise all the more, the importance of having a good immunity, better health and adequate fitness. Awareness and knowledge of many things medical, whether about the current Covid 19 virus, about vitamins, medicines, Oxygen treatment, ventilation, vaccination etc, is reaching the general population via newspapers and social media. It would be prudent if medical data is sought from scientific books and official websites too. So, hope readers excuse when a little liberty has been taken to also include few medical words and data in this write-up, so as to get a better understanding on the topic of immunity and how the skin and immunity are linked, in more ways than one. Do you all know? Origin of the word 'Immunity' is from Latin word 'Immunis': meaning exemption or protection from something harmful, unwelcome or a liability.

It is defined as ' the ability of an organism to resist a particular infection or toxin ‘. Thus, the significance of our inherent immunity to protect us from infections, including the novel Covid 19 virus, cannot be emphasized enough. Immunity works through specific and non-specific ways. The non-specific component of immunity is by the protective shield bestowed by the skin layer. The specific component of immunity is by the action of specific antibodies or sensitized white blood cells generated by the immune system of our body. Let us see few more details about skin and how skin is significant and relevant to the topic of immunity.

Skin is the largest organ of the body, measuring 1.5 – 2 sqm and comprises 1/6th of the total body weight. It serves vital function of a physical barrier between the internal environment of our body and any external stress caused by injury, microbial invasion, Ultra-Violet irradiation or environmental toxins. It also serves other crucial functions of maintaining temperature and fluid electrolyte balance, sensation of touch, synthesis of Vitamin D in the presence of Sunlight, excretion of toxins through sweat, etc.

OCTOBER 2020 - 004

We can appreciate better the value of an intact immune function and integrity of skin, which, when challenged, will hamper this homeostasis, making way for diseases or infections. E.g. in burns, where one suffers damage to the skin to a large extent, may result in complications of infection, temperature and fluid imbalance and sometimes even death. Other than being a protective barrier, skin also has its own immune system, in addition to that of the inner body. It has certain lymphocyte cells within its layers, which are responsible to capture the antigen of the invading environmental microorganism or toxin and present it to the inner immune system of the body. The activated T-cells, specific to the exposed antigen, then cause inflammation and eliminate the pathogen.

See how crucial the role of skin in immunity is!!! Let us also review some interesting literature in the history of immunity and vaccines, as much has been said and written about them, especially about the most eagerly awaited Covid 19 vaccine. Earlier it had been the belief that diseases were being caused by ill-deeds or bad air. It was the great scientist, Louis Pasteur, who explained through his ‘Germ theory of disease’, how disease is caused by specific bacteria and how, following infection, the human body gains the ability to resist further infections.

This is the basis for naturally acquired immunity, where a person gets exposed by chance to a live pathogen and develops a primary immune response giving long term protection, sometimes life-long. Immunity can also be artificially acquired, that is, by deliberate introduction of antigen into the body, eliciting the protective immune response, through vaccination. Birth of active immunotherapy may have begun with Mithridates VI of Pontus, when he worked to induce active immunity for snake venom. It was Edward Jenner, who in 1978, developed the concept of vaccines and created the first vaccine, the Smallpox vaccine. This was against the cowpox virus, Variolae vaccinae, thus came about the terms: vaccine and vaccination. Louise Pasteur in 1881, to honour Jenner, proposed that the term, vaccine, should be extended to cover all the subsequent protective inoculations specific to disease causing pathogen, e.g. Polio vaccine, Measles vaccine etc.

There is scientific consensus that vaccines are a very safe and effective way to fight and eradicate infectious diseases. Sometimes they can fail or give inadequate protection due to many different variables but they still benefit by decreasing the severity in case the infection does occur. OCTOBER 2020 - 005

Immunity: Friend and Foe What does this mean? How is this possible? Our immunity is like our friend to help us in need, right? Then how can it be our enemy too? like a double-edged sword? Let us see the answers to these questions and understand how the immune system works in different ways to be our friend and foe. Usually the immune system is programmed to recognise foreign substances like pathogens and toxins, then react to defend against them and protect the body and aid healing. At the same time, it is also programmed to recognise our own body cells as ' self ' and not to react, called as ' Immune-tolerance'. Thus, health is a physical state, where the self is spared and what is foreign, is immunologically eliminated. Disease can arise when what is foreign cannot be eliminated or what is self is not spared. Sometimes an immune reaction is misdirected at our own healthy tissues causing autoimmune diseases. Or the immune system sets off an intense inflammatory response and excessive release of cytokines by the activated T-cells, resulting in damage to our own body organs. 'Cytokine storm', a word being read around in many posts, as causing organ damage in the Covid 19 infection, is one such example. At one end, skin acts as a barrier and protects us. At the same time, it can also be involved in a variety of such immune reactions to give a rash, a condition, where the skin becomes red with altered texture and associated mostly with discomfort of itching and painful, irritable skin. To name a few autoimmune skin conditions, they are: vitiligo, alopecia areata, SLE and other auto-immune collagen vascular diseases and blistering

conditions, which, then require specific immuno-modulating treatments. Many internal diseases and illnesses can manifest or present in a variety of skin, hair or nail problems, which then help to give the Dermatologists clues to diagnose the internal medical issue. Skin, hair and nails thus serve as a mirror to our inner health. Would like to pen down few additional points paramount to having a good immunity and achieve better fitness. It is so very important to pursue a consistent and disciplined healthy lifestyle, focusing on 3 main factors: a balanced nutritious diet, a regular optimal exercise routine combined with rest and a sound peaceful sleep.

This can have an analogy to the ‘Tripod metaphor’. A tripod is used to mount the camera and is beneficial to take clear proper photographs or videos. The 3 legs of a tripod enable it to stand stable. Even if one leg breaks, it will no longer stand tall and stable, ruining the picture or video quality. OCTOBER 2020 - 006

Same can be extrapolated to our health. If any one of the 3 factors get neglected or disturbed, probability of suffering from any disease, catching an infection or the severity of any illness will be more. Plus, we need to take cognizance of an additional factor and that is: ‘Our mental well-being’. To remain stable, level-headed and have strong emotional health. Last but not the least, a simple but pertinent message to the readers: Cherish and value yourself and all around you! Live life to the fullest! To quote Bill Keene: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the present” Dr Vaishalee Kirane

Dr. Major Nalini Janardhanan IMMUNE SYSTEM & IMMUNITY Immunity is the ability of our body to resist attacks of micro organisms like bacteria, virus, fungus and parasite causing infection. The Immune System in our body protects us from infections. It can distinguish ‘self’ from ‘non self’ that is, our own tissue from foreign tissue of organisms. The immune system which is our body’s defense against infection is made up of many parts and the function is complicated. Now let us know about the basic facts of immune system and immunity. White blood cells or Leucocytes (WBC) play an important role in immunity. They circulate in blood vessels and lymphatic vessels and are stored in various places like Thymus gland, Spleen, Bone Marrow and Lymph nodes. There are mainly 2 types of white blood cells: 1) Phagocytes: These cells surround, absorb, eat or kill pathogens (microorganisms causing diseases). There are various types of phagocytes: a) Neutrophils: These are the most common cells which fight and kill pathogens. b) Monocytes: These are the largest cells and have multiple roles. c) Macrophages: These cells remove dead and dying cells.

OCTOBER 2020 - 007

d) Mast cells: These cells have several roles. They help to heal wounds and defend against pathogens. 2) Lymphocytes: These cells help our body to remember previous invaders and recognize them if they come back to attack again. There are mainly 2 types of Lymphocytes-B Lymphocytes (B Cells) and T Lymphocytes ( T Cells). Lymphocytes begin their life in bone marrow. Some stay there and develop into B Cells. Others go to Thymus Gland and become T Cells. B Lymphocytes: These cells help in finding targets and sending defense to attack them, by alerting T cells. When our body senses a foreign substance (antigen) B cells make antibodies which stay in our body and help to fight the same germ again. T Lymphocytes: These cells destroy compromised cells in body and also alert other white blood cells like phagocytes. There are 2 types of T cells-Helper T cells and Killer T cells. Antibodies These are a type of proteins (immunoglobulin) made by B cells. They recognize and lock on to specific antigens and destroy them with the help of T cells. They stay in our body and help to fight the same germ again. Vaccines given during immunization introduce the body to an antigen. It will help the body in making antibodies. Antibodies can 1) Neutralize toxins (poisonous substances) produced by different organisms. 2) Activate a group of proteins called complement which helps to kill bacteria, viruses or infected cells. Immune system recognizes certain foreign invaders which could be dangerous. The response could be general and nonspecific. Thus immune system has many parts, cells and substances which help to protect our body against diseases and infections. This protection is called Immunity.

There are basically 3 types of immunity-Innate, Adaptive and Passive. 1) Innate or Natural Immunity All of us are born with innate immunity. It includes the external barriers acting like the first line of defense.eg: Skin, mucous membranes of throat and gastro intestinal tract which act as a barrier to block germs from entering our body. 2) Adaptive or Active Immunity This type of immunity develops throughout our lives when we are exposed to diseases (Naturally Acquired immunity) or when we are immunized against diseases with vaccines (Artificially Acquired Immunity). This can last long term or even lifelong. a) Naturally Acquired immunity: A person exposed to a live pathogen as in diseases develops a primary immune response leading to immunological memory. b) Artificially Acquired immunity: This type is induced by a vaccine. A vaccine contains antigen. It will stimulates a primary response from the body against the antigen without causing symptoms of disease 3) Passive Immunity This is borrowed from another source and lasts for a short time only. Example is Maternal Passive Immunity which can be a) Maternal antibodies passed through placenta to fetus during pregnancy and b) Antibodies in a mother’s breast milk which gives temporary immunity to baby against infections. We should boost our immunity to get protection from various infections and diseases by staying away from smoking, alcoholism and drug abuse, having balanced diet, regular exercises and following a healthy lifestyle Dr (Major) Nalini Janardhanan

Immunity: Basics and Recent scenario Since long we have learnt from our elders ‘physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness’ and if disease is our enemy than immunity is our weapon. Immunity is resistance exhibited by the host towards injury caused by microorganisms and their products. If I explain in simple words, it is the ability of body to defend itself from foreign bodies. Years back people were more immune compare to our generation and the reasons are change in dietary habits, more mental stress, environmental variations and other physico chemical changes. It is also necessary to understand basic types of immunity and is classified mainly in two types. Innate immunity that possesses by virtue of genetic and constitutional makeup. Adaptive immunity that human acquires during life. When immunity is developed as a result of antigenic stimulus it is known as active immunization and if we transmit it to a recipient in a readymade form it is passive immunization.

When we talk about immunity it’s essential to know when and why we need to increase it. As we know our body creates specific antibodies when exposed to pathogen but when our body is exposed to unknown microorganism our innate immunity shows limited defence and so we need to immunize the person by means of vaccination. Now let me illuminate the role of immunity on current COVID 19 pandemic situation. We all hear and talk about boosting our immunity as vaccine is not available for this new virus and all what we can expect to recover from SARS CoV2 depends on our immunity. Apart from that we can use immunity of others by plasma therapy in which the specific COVID 19 antibody IgG act as passive immune therapy that might neutralize viral particles and activate complement system that can lead to viral elimination. But if immunity is our friend it can be foe in certain ways. Now you will be surprised how can this be possible! So the answer is CD147 is transmembrane protein of immunoglobulin family but recently it is demonstrated that CoV2 also binds to CD147 so the immune system itself could be an entry way of SARS CoV2. In addition it seems that innate immunity, characterized by neutrophils and proinflammatory cytokines in the form of cytokine storm, try to limit the inflammation and overcome the virus, however it leads to an excessive inflammatory response rather than harming the virus causes lung injury and life threatening edema that unfortunately causes severe respiratory failure and death in severely affected patients. We know ‘a coin has two sides’ same way immunity plays an important role in fighting COVID 19, paradoxically it could also be harmful.! FENY A. SUCHAK Final BDS (GDCHJ)

SALONI CHAUHAN PG IN DIETETICS

Nutrition and Immunity As we all know that the immune system is our body`s defence system against infection. Immune system helps us keep HEALTHY. Nowadays the common person also awares about immunity due to this pandemic situation of COVID-19. Our immunity is very essential for our survival. Without immunity our body would be open to be attacked from Bacteria, viruses, parasites etc. Everyone’s immune system is different but as a general rule it becomes stronger during adulthood. That's why teens and adults are lesser prone to illness. Remember one thing that immunity can`t be built overnight. There are no medicines which can boost your immunity overnight. But lifestyle and diet can help to boost immunity. How to enhance immunity. Healthy diet (more fruits and vegetable) Do walking,Exercise,Yoga,Pranayam Proper sleep Reduce your stress load Get some sunshine for vitamin D

As per Harvard universit research,Eating enough nutrients as part of diet is required for the health and function of all cells, including immunity cell. Certain dietary patterns may better prepare the body for microbial attacks and excess inflammation. Examples of nutrients that have been identified as critical for the growth and function of immune cells includes Vit-C,Vit-D,Zinc,Iron,and protein. They are found in a variety of plants and animal foods. Diet, which has lower nutrients , high refined sugar, red meat and low portion of fruits and vegetables can promote disturbances in healthy intestinal microorganisms and associated suppressed immunity. 5 Easy ways to Build Sustainable Immunity Immunity building is an exercise exclusively for the body but can't be built alone by our cells. It is a combined effort by our mind, body and most importantly our Soul. Immunity means to be in a state of health and being able to combat all the external impressions without being affected by it. There are many food articles, yogasans and medicinal substances which can enhance this state, however if one intents to build it from within and make it as a natural state the following are the 5 most effective ways build immunity. This has come from my 20+ years of practicing Homoeopathy and assessing numerous patients and analysing their lifestyles and choices … Get some sunshine for vitamin D Easy ways to build Immunity: 1. Body: Understand your body, listen to the signals, and get to know what suits you and what doesn’t. Our body is our best friend and it’s the only HOME you will ever reside in! Our body’s natural state of being is “perfect health”. So if you just choose to stop abusing it, maintaining high level of immunity is a child’s play.

2. Thin or Fat? Being thin or fat is no yardstick for health, so don’t waste your energy on losing weight. Simply shift your focus from unhealthy choices to the healthier ones. e.g. rather than taking sugar loaded ketchup take a freshly made home-cooked chutney. Rather than taking a vehicle, walk for short distances. 3. Exercise routine: Simple, Light and Regular – this is the mantra of maintaining and exercise routine. If you attempt anything complex or heavy exercise, the next day you aren’t able to persist. To maintain good health you need regular exercise and not sporadic ones. 4. Diet: It is not rocket science when I say “eat a balanced diet”, isn’t it? We all know what it means and sometimes we are running after creating this balanced diet but mostly miss out. So my simple solution is to go back to original, authentic, traditional Indian recipes. Simply eat food like our mom used to feed us in 80s. Who doesn’t like “maa ke haath ka khana?” because that was the authentic balanced diet. 5. Mind, Body and Soul connection: Our body inherently has a capacity to heal itself. We just have to make effort to connect the dots and decipher the signals which our soul keeps sending us via our body. Illnesses or physical complaints are the real language through which our body speaks to us. Mind is nothing but a river of E-Motions = Energy in Motion and like any river if stagnated the water gets contaminated. Similarly if our emotions get stuck it stagnates life and causes problems. Hence we must allow emotions to flow and body to speak. If all the 3 – Mind, Body and Soul remain in equilibrium our immunity would be optimum. Immunity is not just absence of disease but an ability to combat adversities and enjoy life to the fullest Stay Safe! Stay Healthy!! Stay Happy!!!

Dr. Rajesh Chavan MBBS, MS Head Medical & Health Services AAMBY VALLEY CITY

Dear Self, There is a lot of discussion going on about immunity nowadays, as corona has settled here and it is here to stay. People around me asking me , when this is getting over ?? which is a hilarious question. I always say or think WHEN YOU ARE GETTING OVER ? People think this is some yearly condition which is getting over by 31st Dec 2020. Why no one is thinking that they have limited period of time to live on this Earth. and whatever the time they have , they should spend it happily n being healthy. If health is good then of course you are going to enjoy your BEING ! IMMUNITY is a trending word now ! Have anyone heard about it in our childhood ? we use to drink water directly from municipal taps , we used to play in mud, we used get our cricket ball from the Gutter !! and still we have come so far ! we had our pandemics of FLU , BIRD FLU , SWINE FLU , ETC. But as our immunity was good and it is good that's why we are here.

Immunity of a person comes from basic 5 elements WATER , AIR , FIRE, EARTH, SPACE !! Just think about it , we are made up of these 5 elements. most of us don't know that !!!! Are we consuming enough of these ??? One must have enough water as our body is made up of 70% water ! one must have fresh Air One must have Spontaneity ,inspiration , intuitions n passions as Fire. one must understand the solid nature of matter eg soil , mountains etc one must understand the importance of Space as everything happens here. NOW good nutritious food ,ample water , enough sleep or rest and top of it all is physical exercise !!! you will be surprised that I'm not talking about any medicines , protein supplements or energy drinks etc I firmly believe in ... Find 3 Hobbies 1. One to make you money 2. One to keep you in shape ie. Fit 3.One to keep you creative Immunity is Physical and Mental. and in these corona times we need stronger Mental Immunity. As Virus is not deadly but the FEAR is !! If one conquers FEAR OF DEATH then your physical immunity will help fighting any disease. Eat Well Sleep Well Exercise Well Be Happy n Cheerful You will Have abundant Immunity. Dr. Rajesh Chavan OCTOBER 2020 - 012

Dr. Rehana Rao Craniosacral Therapist (Cst) Distance Craniosacral Therapist(DCst) BDS

Immunity & Craniosacral therapy Probably, the only time when you were reminded of your immunity earlier was when you caught a cold or a fever or the weekend flu, and had to miss work or school or you didn't want to miss something that you had most awaited. 2020 has changed that realization for all of us. The good side to this realization is that you get to focus back on waking the health in your body do a job it can do best i.e., help you retain your strength and energy by fighting external virus/bacteria , in other words, IMMUNITY. So, does building a strong immune system come from just the physical body? I used to wonder about this until I saw many people in practice where someone had a tiff in the family, or a break up or trouble with finances, and from nowhere they had a crash in their health. This is where a wholistic understanding of the body dawned upon me that I could relate to soldiers of your health.

The beauty of the body is it has a rhythm for everything- beating of the heart , breathing, coordination of the muscles towards movement, your emotional response, and so on. These rhythms are connected to functional coordination of all the organs and systems in the body. When ever this rhythm is off beat in an unnatural way, due to the external system thats when the it really affects the immune system the most. The body also has back up system in case of minor problems . We usually come out of these sooner than we know. In chronic problems, we are often attempting to connect the dots and restart the whole immune system again. As a craniosacral therapist, I have been working with people of various issues from simple headaches to depression to cancer. Typically, restoring the rhythmic balance in the body restores health in the body. This in turn allows the body to resolve the overwhelm of the imbalances due to the external situations. Its quite simple. So if you had the question of how ‘’ exactly’’ do I work on my immune system or how do i ensure the rhythms in my body are balanced? , here is the answer.. For the physical body, make sure you exercise, take a walk , eat consciously, sleep sufficiently For your mind, meditate, be mindful, keep life simple, go easy on yourself For your emotions sing, dance , create, laugh and once in a while do consult a craniosacral therapist to help you find a wholistic balance. Remember that the source of ill health is outside your body, nourish yourself to guard your body’s health well ! Dr Rehana Rao

Immune Cells at Work Immunity is the Defensive System of our body which is vital for one’s survival and good health. Immune System must be active 24 x 7 like our heart to fight against antigens [microorganisms like bacteria] and cancer cells too. Immunity is the Defensive System of our body which is vital for one’s survival and good health. Immune System must be active 24 x 7 like our heart to fight against antigens [microorganisms like bacteria] and cancer cells too. Immunity is of the following types: Innate Immunity: Inborn from Birth Acquired Immunity: We acquire it as we grow Based on the how we develop Active Immunity: Permanent in nature. The individual’s own immune system is the cause of the immunity. Antigens are deliberately introduced in a vaccine. Passive Immunity: Temporary in nature. Immunity is transferred from another person or animal. Administration of Antibodies against Snake Venom is an example of Passive Immunity.

Immune system comprises of White Blood Cells, Lymphatic System, Antibodies and Complement System. WBC’S includes a) Neutrophils: These are first to act against an antigen b) Eosinophils: It rises during Allergic reactions and also effectively fights against parasitic infections. c) Basophils: It signals the Neutrophils and Basophils about the antigen’s presence d) Macrophages: These are cell debris cleaner; fights against antigens and helps in maturation of RBC’s e) Monocytes: Present in the bone marrow and blood circulation. When these enter the tissues then they become Macrophages f) Natural Killer [NK] cells: Function is cell mediated cytotoxic innate immunity g) T Lymphocytes: These are again divided into h) B Lymphocytes: Responsible for producing antibodies against the antigens in our body Primary Lymphoid Organs are Red Bone Marrow and Thymus where lymphocytes are generated and undergo development and maturation. Secondary Lymphoid organs are Spleen; Lymph Nodes and Mucosa Associated Lymphoid Tissue [MALT] where the mature lymphocytes interact with antigen. Lymph Nodes act like sieve and filters the lymph to detect the antigen. Enlarged lymph Nodes indicates presence of infection or Tumor Metastasis in a person. Signs of a Weak Immune System: I. High Stress Levels People with high stress level have decreased number of lymphocytes, WBC’s that help to fight infection. II. Wounds are slow to heal III. Frequent Infections IV. Feeling tired all the time OCTOBER 2020 - 014

Person’s Immune System can also be Weakened by the following: Smoking Alcohol Consumption Poor Nutrition Frequent lack of Sleep A Complete Blood Count {CBC} evaluates the number of White Blood Cells and Antibodies in return helps to test a person’s immune system. Ways to Boost One’s Immune System: 1) Balanced Diet including Vitamin E and Vitamin C 2) Get Enough Sleep 3) Manage your Stress levels by engaging with your hobbies. 4) Stay Hydrated 5) Exercise Daily Cells at Work! [Anime]

CELLS at WORK is an Amazing Anime which perfectly depicts the immune response of a person’s body. It also accurately depicts the various types and functions of the immune cells like the WBC’s; T lymphocytes; Macrophages; Dendritic Cells and B lymphocytes.

The level of detailing like Neutrophils acting First on Antigens; Dendritic cells helping in maturation of immature T lymphocytes and Macrophages Action makes this anime more relatable and enjoyable by the people with interest in Science. It is also highly informative to the general public as it teaches them about their immune system components and cells efforts to maintain optimum health. It also focuses on various conditions like food poisoning; heat stress; Injury and various infections that we face in everyday life. This Anime is a Perfect combo of Learning; Fun and Imagination which can be used to educate the general public and the younger generation too. R. Chendhur Thumilan

Short communication Undesirable of Effects of Mobilephone’s radiation on Central Nervous System Mobile phones have become an essential tool for us in everyday life but its rapid growth in popularity since the 2000s has sparked many concerns of its safety. Its emittance of radio frequencies (RF), electro magnetic fields (EMF) and close proximity to the brain has given reason for exploration into its effects on sleep, glucose metabolism, cognitive functions and other brain activities. Electromagnetic radiation is a type of adiofrequency radiation that can be emitted in different frequencies and wavelength measured in hertz (Hz). The higher the frequency of EMF, the more ionizing it becomes. Telecommunication devices such as phones, televisions and radios use “the frequency of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation [that] ranges from 30 kilohertz (30 kHz, or 30,000 Hz) to 300 gigahertz (300 GHz, or 300 billion Hz)” of which can be absorbed by the brain when positioned close enough. Specific absorption rate (SAR) is an estimated measure of the amount of RF-EMF absorbed in watts per kilogram of body weight (W/kg) (Institute, 2018).

A longitudinal cohort study (Mohler et al., 2012), where subjects were followed up over time, on exposure to RF EMF on sleep quality was done by means of questionnaires to 955 middle-aged participants and 119 other subjects in a nested study. Participants were questioned about their sleep patterns; daytime sleepiness and mobile phone use was collected. Their exposure to RF EMF was measured using a prediction model. The nested study participants were given actigraphs, a small non-invasive device used to measure sleep and activity cycles and their RF EMF was measured in their bedrooms using an exposimeter. The results showed no true association with sleep and exposure to RF EMF supported by the nested study. This study helped add to the evidence that everyday use of mobile phones has no affect on sleep quality. Another study was conducted using a double blind trial design on 48 participants who were exposed to a RF EMF from a sham or active MP at an SAR of 1.4 W/kg for 3 hours. After exposure, subjects had a full night of sleep at a sleep laboratory where a polysomnographic recording was taken using an electroencephalogram (EEG). These measurement techniques allowed the researchers to study the brain waves during sleep and showed that there were disturbances to normal sleep patterns in stage 3 and 4 on the EEG, which “indicated moderate impairment of slow-wave sleep” (Lowden et al., 2011). Further cohort studies were undertaken, on of which was done on 286 young people and medical students who were questionnaires designed to collect information about their health and MP use. From analyzing the results, it was found that the subjects used their MP frequently and also reported health complaints such as fatigue, headaches, sleeplessness and even sensations from the heat of mobile phones near the ear.

OCTOBER 2020 - 016

This allowed the researcher to conclude that excessive mobile phone use could be detrimental to the neuropsychiatric health of developing young people and so should be considered for further studies or raise in awareness amongst medical students. (Khan, 2008) Researchers have conducted many more cohort studies to identify the effects of exposure of RF EMFs on the brain with different aims and using different methods in measuring brain activities. The results show a range of different relationships between RF EMF exposure and neurocognitive functions. However some of these works contradict and are inconsistent in their results but “it is argued that the heterogeneity in results may be due to methodological differences, statistical power and interpretation criteria.” (Zhang et al., 2017) Studies have not only been done on human subjects but on rats too. Mobile phone RF EMF exposure has shown to cause “neural damage in the cortex, hippocampus, and basal ganglia in the brains of exposed rats” (Salford et al., 2003) When the rats were exposed to different frequencies of RF EMF in TEM-cells, which is a structure that would allow the RF EMF from a mobile phone to be distributed uniformly across the chamber where the rats were placed in for 2 hours. After exposure, the rats were observed for 50 days for any “neurologic and behavioral abnormalities”. They were then sacrificed and brain sections were taken, analyzed by staining DNA/RNA and albumin antibodies were added to stain the albumin molecules. From previous experiments by (Leszczynski et al., 2002, Schirmacher et al., 2000) whose work outlined the increase in permeability of membranes in the blood-brain barriers to sucrose by activating specific proteins in rats exposed to an RF EMF of 1.8GHz. From this, Salford et al continued their work to focus on albumin leakage into the cerebellar brain tissue and whether this

may cause damage to neurons and brain tissue. From the results obtained and images from the stained brain sections, it was visible that there was more albumin in exposed rats compared to the normal brain section. “Exposed animals usually showed several albumin-positive foci around the finer blood vessels in white and gray matter” References: (1)INSTITUTE, N. Motivational Speaker I YouTuber Holistic Wellbeing Holistic wellbeing is the need of the hour owing to the rampant lifestyle diseases in today's times. It is an approach to live a happy and balanced life. It is an integration of all aspects of our lives. The most important and primary aspect of holistic wellness is physical wellness. Physical health is basically taking care of our bodies in the best optimum way. To ensure that, we should dedicate some time to physical exercise daily, be it as simple as a walk in a park or jog or yoga, but sticking to a workout routine is important. Along with exercising, eating healthy and keeping our bodies hydrated is also necessary. Other crucial factors for a healthy body include sound sleep, to rejuvenate our mind and body, and spending some time admiring nature's beauty and getting a good dose of Sunlight. The next prominent element for holistic wellness, which is equally important as physical wellness is mental health. To achieve a rational state of mental health we should keep our mind as calm as possible by practising meditation and taming our negative emotions.

Keeping our minds busy by improving our aptitudes or learning new skills and engaging time to pursue our hobbies not only keeps us away from the depressive moods but also helps us in improving our personality. If required do not shy away from seeking help in the form of counselling or consultation from experts. At the same time be considerate and mindful towards others mental needs too. The next facet which is of paramount importance is our emotional well-being or emotional health. It is basically the ability to deal with whatever comes our way in life and the steps we need to take to maintain our emotional health. First and foremost we should be aware of our own emotions. Look inside and ask yourself 'Am I worried? depressed? concerned? angry? fearful? etc... Spend time introspecting your emotions to get clarity of thought, write down your emotions and the actions you want to take to tackle the situation so that next time you don't react but respond to the situation. Surround yourself with people who love you and add good Vibes.

OCTOBER 2020 - 018

After mastering physical, mental and emotional well-being the next in line is spiritual well being. It is the connection you have with something greater than you. It is finding a purpose for your life and working to contribute to the welfare of society in whatever way you can. Practice gratitude for all the blessings. Note them down in a gratitude journal every day to enhance positive outlook towards life. Remember It is rightlysaid 'Human beings cannot make much difference but Being Human certainly can. The next significant element of holistic wellness is energetic wellbeing. Our thoughts feelings and emotions have a different and unique vibration. If there is an imbalance in our emotions and feelings it will create an imbalance in our vibration

and this, in turn, will affect our energy. Our internal self is reflected in our outer behaviour so be centred ,calm, happy, peaceful and take care to protect your energies. To cut the long story short I would say that it is extremely vital to take good care of each and every aspect of our life to live a holistic life. Have oneness and harmony with ourself and the entire Universe and in the process create a better world for ourselves and others. Baljeet Kaur Anand

Rahul Suri Passionate Writer Immunity in Covid Times There is much about the COVID-19 pandemic remains uncertain, we know how it will likely end: when the spread of the virus starts to slow (and eventually ceases altogether) because enough people have developed immunity to it. At that point, whether it’s brought on by a vaccine or by people catching the disease, the population has developed “herd immunity.” “Once the level of immunity passes a certain threshold, then the epidemic will start to die out because there aren’t enough new people to infect,” said in Delhi University While determining that threshold for COVID-19 is critical, a lot of nuance is involved in calculating exactly how much of the population needs to be immune for herd immunity to take effect and protect the people who aren’t immune. At first it seems simple enough. The only thing you need to know is how many people, on average, are infected by each infected person. This value is called R0 (pronounced “R naught”). Once you have that, you can plug it into a simple formula for calculating the herd immunity threshold: 1 − 1/R0.

Let’s say the R0 for COVID-19 is 2.5, meaning each infected person infects, on average, two and a half other people (a common estimate). In that case, the herd immunity threshold for COVID-19 is 0.6, or 60%. That means the virus will spread at an accelerating rate until, on average across different places, 60% of the population becomes immunity At that point, the virus will still spread, but at a decelerating rate until it stops completely. Just as a car doesn’t come to a stop the moment you take your foot off the gas, the virus won’t vanish the moment herd immunity is reached. “You could imagine that once 60% of the population is infected, the number of infections starts to drop. But it might be another 20% that gets infected while the disease is starting to die out,” said That 60% is also the threshold past which new introductions of the virus — say, an infected passenger disembarking from a cruise ship into a healthy port with herd immunity — will quickly burn out. Herd immunity differs from place to place, and many factors influence how it’s calculated. 31 It’s not easy to figure out when a disease will stop spreading through a population. Just as a car doesn’t come to a stop the moment you take your foot off the gas, the virus won’t vanish the moment herd immunity is reached.

Diagram showing how it becomes harder for a disease to spread if more people are immuneity “It doesn’t mean you won’t be able to start a fire at all, but that outbreak is going to die,” However, things quickly get complicated. The herd immunity threshold depends on how many people each infected person actually infects — a number that can vary by location. The average infected person in an apartment building may infect many more people than the average infected person in a rural setting. So while an R0 of 2.5 for COVID-19 may be a reasonable number for the whole world, it will almost certainly vary considerably on a more local level, averaging much higher in some places and lower in others. This means that the herd immunity threshold will also be higher than 60% in some places and lower in others. “I think the range of R0 consistent with data for COVID-19 is larger than most people. Now our country has accrossed to 364957 Active cases in Covid. Take care of yours self . Warm Regards Rahul Suri Passionate Writer
