Baby Samuel Baby Shihole The Welwitschia Private Hospital in Walvis Bay and Cottage Mediclinic in Swakopmund were beaten hands down yesterday when the two state hospitals respectively in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund saw seven leap year babies into the world. The two private medical facilities had no babies delivered, meaning they will have to wait until 2020 to have a go at it again. Leap year occurs every four years, meaning these babies would have one numerical birthday only every four years, as opposed to normal year babies who becomes numerically older every year. Namport completes railway upgrade The Namibian Ports Authority recently upgraded the Permanent Ways (railway) infrastructure in the Port of Walvis Bay for the first time since Namport was established in 1994. The rail upgrade project was done at a total amount of N$20 million. Namport owns and maintains all railways inside the Port of Walvis Bay. As part of a planned maintenance program, the relevant sections of rail in the Port of Walvis Bay were earmarked for complete rehabilitation more than 5 years ago. The sections of railways that were rehabilitated now include the main feeder line into the port as well as the line feeding the existing container terminal and the two staging lines in the container terminal, a total length of 4,5km. Certain sections of the rails in the port still consisted of old 30 kg/m and 40 kg/m rails. All rails were now upgraded to 48 kg/m rails. Most sections had to be totally reconstructed, which included complete track and sleeper replacement and reballasting. Although of relatively small value, this project was significantly complex due to the requirement for minimum operational interruption to the track which is in
daily use. The work now completed is only stage 1 of the complete Port of Walvis Bay Railway Rehabilitation project. Subsequent phases of the project will see other sections of track being rehabilitated. Future stages of the project will also involve rehabilitation of the track founation, or layer works, by a process that involves chemical stabilisation/ strengthening of
the subsurface ground by the injection of chemicals into the ground. This chemical injection technology avoids the downtime created with complete reconstruction of the foundation. The recently completed stage 1 of the railway upgrade project leaves the Port of Walvis Bay with a state of the art railway network that can serve the Port of Walvis Bay well into the future.

Nampol's operation Omake Sharlien Tjambari was a success The Namibian Police in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay had what they call “Operation Omake” on Friday evening, whereby they drove through the suburbs to see if there was any criminal activities taking place. According to Inspector Erick Nghaamwa of the Mondesa police station, they received a call about a shack break-in the DRC and when they arrived at the shack, the footprints of the thief from the shack he had broken into led them to his own shack and inside they found all kinds of goods, from gas bottles to rolls of toilet paper. Nghaamwa said it seems like the thief had an operation from home where he sells stolen goods to the community. The community members are urged to go and identify their belongings at the Mondesa police station. Nghaamwa also said that same night they arrested a man in Saamstaan settlement in Mondesa when they found him with 14 mandrax tablets. On the same night the traffic department also issued 15 tickets within three hours to taxi drivers who were driving without driving licenses after hours. Nghaamwa said it seems like taxi drivers give their taxis to other people to drive for them after hours and warned that Nampol will confiscate these taxis and the rightful owners will pay for the crimes. In Walvis Bay, Nampol confiscated 82 tablets of suspected mandrax,13 big “bankies” of pure cannabis were also found plus an unknown white powder, 13 big blocks of suspected crack cocaine and one unknown pink tablet. N$541 in cash was also found with the drugs.

Mondesa taxi rank chaos Sharlien Tjambari The situation of serving passengers at the Mondesa taxi rank in Swakomund is becoming more of a nightmare every day, passengers told namib times this week. They are particularly worried over the driving conduct of taxi- and minibus drivers who act as if they own the passengers and have little regard for people's rights as paying customers. Vespa Muunda (pictured), the President of Namibia Buses and Taxis Association (NABTA) lashed at these arrogant taxi operators and said this is a problem as old as the taxi rank itself. Muunda said the rank is supposed to have only one entrance and one exit. Mondesa taxi rank has no such arrangement and taxis and buses have been entering from any direction as they please. Muunda said the Swakopmund Municipality have realised too late that they need to put access control mechanisms in place. Muunda also claims that the bus and taxi operators do not work together and this is why they fight over passengers: “There is no proper communication between the operators and when you try to talk to them they say NABTA is not their boss,” explained Muunda. According to Muunda, the bus and taxi operators sometimes load people without taking the passengers names and contact details and it is a hazard for the passengers because if they are involved in an accident it will be very hard to identify them. The namib times spoke to a passenger who preferred to remain anonymous and she said she commutes every day between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. It is very hard for her because the taxi drivers always “grab her and
pull” her around. She explained it is unbearable and it sometimes feels like a nightmare. According to Muunda NABTA is only able to control operators within the taxi rank and those who load passengers on the streets are not NABTA's responsibility, but that of the Swakopmund Municipality. Mr Simon Kambwa, who has been representing the bus and taxi operators said NABTA's administration and the operators do not work together. NABTA does not have clients at the taxi rank. “NABTA only owns the taxi rank but their clients are only three or four, nobody want to be represented by NABTA at Mondesa taxi rank because they feel that the money they pay to NABTA per trip is misused,” explained Kambwa as the root cause for the antagonism towards NABTA. Kambwa said every time the operators fill in the names of the passengers in the NABTA book, they pay N$100 per trip. When asked what the way forward is, Muunda said NABTA have established an advisory committee which will look at how to control the bus and taxi operators within the taxi rank and how the operation can grow into a success rather than chaos.

In Snoek we trust
Namibia’s Fisheries Minister Bernhardt Esau noted recently snoek producers in Walvis Bay had consistent good catches for the season, but added this species is highly migratory and maximum catch efforts must be made as long as snoek is available. The Minister made these remarks on Friday at his annual address of the fishing industry in Walvis Bay. There is no quota restriction on snoek catches. Snoek is produced in Walvis Bay through three methods - the first being snoek caught as by-catch in trawl fishing. This is sold by local fish shops in whole frozen form with the head and guts removed. Secondly, snoek is landed by ski-boat operators and sold freshly salted to the public by the ski-boat owners and operators.. The third method is the landing of snoek by long lining vessel and cured at sea. At two land-based factories in Walvis Bay the snoek is undergoing a second curing process and then packed for markets in Mauritius, Reunion and South Africa. On the picture above: workerS of Freddie Fish Processors are seen packing cured snoek for a Mauritian customer at the company’s recent commissioned factory. Minister Esau added to his remarks, requesting operators who catch and process snoek to optimise this windfall to sustain their businesses and help to cover cost when catches are low or snoek is not available.

Caught red-handed dumping waste Liesl Losper A man was recently fined N$1000 for dumping of waste and top of that it was discovered he was driving the vehicle (with which the dumping offence was committed) without a driving license, adding more to his run-in with the law. “We are not sure from which company the vehicle is. Furthermore, we warned this same individual minutes before, but he nonetheless proceeded to dump waste, thinking our officials have left,” the municipality said in a statement. The municipality also extended a warning that illegal dumping is viewed in a very serious light and “we will step up action with fines and even criminal conviction in court if a fine does not have the necessary deterring effect,” it was added. The spokesperson further explained there have been courteous leniency in the past over dumping, but said many other acts lead to Walvis Bay looking unsightly: these include failing to remove election posters within the time frame provided after elections, littering, loitering, spitting in the streets, urinating in public or any other acts that contribute to the negative image of our town environment.

Growth in abnormal load cargo through port The Port of Walvis Bay continues being a dominant logistics hub in southern Africa, having seen an increase in imported goods to the value of N$5.1 billion in the first quarter of 2015. Des Müller: This is exactly why our Government should attend to the state of our roads!! It has become almost impossible to drive on Namibia's roads these days. Every roads authority scream safety but what are they prepared to do in regard to this matter? People drive like mad just to escape all the bloody trucks on the road, sometimes paying for their lives. Silas Bundje: We seriously need to take those trucks of the roads becuz they are finnishing us. Those goods from the ports should be transported by trains. Importing ,importing, importing, what about exporting, exporting exporting, africa is losing money by importing importing. Claudia Lühe: The roads to and from Swakop are to to small. Of course I hoped to see more of the fierce cast members make an appearance on the red carpet tonight, but seeing the film's marquee stars Charlize Theron in a red Dior gown and Oscar nominee Tom Hardy looking ever so dapper, I was left pretty satisfied. Hailed as a masterpiece of feminist cinema, Mad Max: Fury Road turned the action movie genre on its head by delivering a powerful female cast led by Oscar winner Theron as the fearless road warrior Imperator Furiosa. Together with Zoë Kravitz, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Riley Keough, Abbey Lee, and Courtney Eaton, Theron's Furiosa navigates through a punishing desert landscape in search of survival. The film received 10 nominations at the 2016 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director (for George Miller), and Best Visual Effects. The stars of Mad Max: Fury Road cast showed up at the Oscars and absolutely slayed the red carpet. Ixa gives life performance in Narraville Liesl Losper Once again Narraville was treated to a show with IXA wooing the crowds with his hits, including his NAMA entry single "Silwer Randjie".
(Fltr) Jeffrey "Mr Producer" Jobb - IXA 's "Musical Partner In Crime, Chris "Chris-Crauss" Hardnick a young and upcoming rapper, Ike "IXA" Adonis, Harold "Mr Magic" Davids - Manager and Burton "DJ SYLANCE" Taljaard - boyhood friend and Ixa's DJ partner
What would've been an ordinary quiet Saturday in Narraville soon turned out to be "One for the Books" with the renowned DJ SYLANCE on the decks for IXA. This all was made possible through the vision from the boyhood friendship between Ike and Burton Taljaard as well as the support of G&D Sports Bar owner Garven Theron. Ike was also ably supported with performances by his ever - present luitenant and "musical partner in crime" from the days of Brazze Fani Mic, Jeffery "Mr Producer" Jobb and young and upcoming Chris Hardnick that had the crowd bowled over with their rhymes and beats. His quick silver talent on display drew the admiration from old fans and new ones alike and the Fan base "Masekinez" grew exponentially, even to the extent that pledges of financial support were agreed to on the spot. “Rumours that did the rounds at the event have it that big things might be in the pipeline in the near future with regard to an opening act for a certain SA artist to soon hit the coast as well as being an ambassador for CLOVER SA in Namibia. “But none-the-less any of that we maintain our pose like our song says: “Kop HOOG Voete Opi Grond,” said Harold Davids who is the manager for Ixa. The community of Narraville was thanked for their continued support.

Lagoon Park Flea Market sets new public trend Residents of the lagoon suburb in Walvis Bay organised themselves in recent months to upgrade its public park into an attractive, child friendly public open space.
It consolidated this initiative over the weekend with the first Lagoon Park Flea Market of which the proceeds from the letting of the stalls goes towards future maintenance of the park. Equally did all stall vendors donate their proceeds to charities which include the Cancer Association of Namibia or to raise funds for their respective schools. Pictures on this page show the numbers in which people from across Walvis Bay turned out on Sunday morning for this first-ever event, the variety of stalls and the general atmosphere of peace and friendship that underlined the day. “The organisers of this event and the community who beautified this park in recent months and undertook to uphold it in future must be commended. It is certainly an initiative we all can just learn from, one of the visitors told the reporter. The next flea market at the park is scheduled for the last Sunday of April.

Walvis Bay Private High School News At WBPHS the new grade 8 learners go through an orientation process in order to build spirit amongst them, to welcome them to the senior phase, and teach them about teamwork and team spirit, discipline and selfdiscipline and to promote a positive attitude towards the school.
The Grade 8 Orientation period includes get to know one another activities, a “Guppy concert, an informal gathering and it is concluded with the Anchor Ceremony. It is the fourth year since we started with the Anchor Ceremony, where the new grade 8's have the opportunity to strike the Anchor as symbol that they are now letting down their Anchors at WBPHS and staying with us for the next five years. Thank you for your support with all the activities and thank you for attending the concert and the Anchor Ceremony. May each Grade 8 learners experience a year of learning, and working towards their final goal to complete their High School years successfully.

Rossmund Golf News Wednesday's competition was well supported with some nice Olive Oil/Olive Hampers on the table.
The 9 Hole competition was contested over the back nine - believe it or not there was a countout won by Rina Knight over Bertie Saunderson with 20pts - well played to both of you - these two are really showing their metal on a Wednesday. The 18 Hole competition was won by one of our old stalwarts, Piet Bierman with a well played 40pts - Shorty van der Walt taking 2nd place on 37pts, winning a countout over Gary Knight and Willie van Zyl. Must have been that 4 for 4 on number 18 that sealed the plot. Whilst we thank everyone for their support of the Wednesday Competitions can we please ask that players ensure that they have completed their golf timeously - as we would like to have prize-giving at 18:00 lastest.
Saturday saw the real golfers plying their wares at the Monthly Medal. The field was a fair size considering all the big competitions going on in Windhoek and Walvis Bay, whilst some of our single handicapped regulars have gone to represent Namibia in the SA Amateur Tournament. There were some very good scores posted keeping everyone on their toes. As there were no lady players in the field the fish was auctioned off in support of the Junior Development Programme thanks to Lynnette Swarts for her N$350 donation. Thanks also to Roberta for being there to distribute the catch. We had 2x 2clubs: Helmut Ndjendja No.12; Clive Lawrence No. 7. Winners: Overall Gross; Kevin Wentzel 74; Overall Net: Willie van Zyl 70; "A" Div: Dennis Haimbondi 73; "B" Div: Helmut Ndjendja 73; "C"Div: George Murasiki 70; Junior: Wayne Profitt 79. The Burger Bash after/during prizegiving seemed to have gone down well
LHU Blue Water 4th place The past weekend Blue Waters beat Mighty Gunners 3-1, and on Saturday they beat Citizens with 2-0. Eleven Arrows lost their second match of the weekend, going down 2-1 to Citizens. Below is the results and the standings up to Round 23.

with the players and visitors alike. Coming-up: Wednesday 2 March - Advertising Displays/ Gerhard Byleveld will be the sponsor. Saturday 5 March - Langer Heinrich will have their annual Corporate Day - as in the past players wishing to play on Saturday should please give their names in at the club and they will be allocated a place in a team.
Squash Notes Summer league. Well So far so good. The tussle goes on. One thing's for sure there is no love lost on the courts. Those 20 minutes is all about making points, but as soon as the alarm sounds the end of play the camaraderie is back, sweat drenched and weary, the socialising over a much needed cold liquid refreshment is the ideal way to end the evening… The results for last week were as follows:Monday 22nd. NBF Elects New Board Members The Namibia Boxing Federation (NBF) on Saturday elected a new executive board during their Annual General Meeting (AGM). Benjamin Rebang of Khomas Region was elected as new NBF President, to be deputised by Jeremia Ndjembo from Oshana Region. Memory Manasse (Khomas Region) was elected Secretary-General and Hira Katjepunda (Khomas Region) took the Treasurer position, while Robert Haihambo also from the Khomas Region became the new Public Relations Officer (PRO). They will be in charge of NBF for the next four years. Speaking to Nampa after the election, Rebang expressed his happiness for being put in charge of the NBF. “It feels good to be dully elected. This role comes with responsibility and it allows you to take actions with authority.” Namibia National
Olympic Committee (NNOC) President Jesse Schickerling, who supervised the election, told Nampa that the process went smooth. “Most of the new board members were part of the interim board, which showed the general confidence people have in them,” noted Schickerling. Some of the new NBF executive board has been serving as an interim board since December 2015 when previous board members stepped down after failing to meet the Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) standards. Interim board members included Rebang, Ndjembo and Manasse. Hira Katjepunda replaced Kenneth Muatara as treasurer while Robert Haihambo replaced Lisias Hangula as PRO Rebang said the interim board was established because the previous board were in power for 22 years from 1994, which is against the AIBA standards of the board serving in 4-year

cycles, while being in control of both amateur and professional boxing is also against the international organisation’s rules. Kelly Nghixulifwa and Joseph Kaperu stepped down as president and secretary-general respectively. Beside the election of the executive board members, the AGM deliberated on some pertinent issues such as financial support for the development of amateur boxing in the country and the decentralisation of boxing developmental programmes.
