Ocean Life Washes Up at Mole Following Swakop River Flow

Residents and visitors in Swakopmund recently observed an unusual phenomenon. OctopusesandsmallfishwashingashoreneartheMolearea. Thiseventcoincidedwiththe SwakopRiverreachingtheAtlanticOcean, arareoccurrencethatsignificantlyimpactsthe localmarineenvironment.

The Swakop River is an ephemeral watercourse, meaning it flows only after substantial inland rainfall. Its path to the ocean is infrequent. Priortothisevent, theriverlast reached the Atlantic in 2022. When the river does flow into the sea, it brings a surge of freshwater, sediments, and organicmaterials.

Thisinfluxcanleadtoabrupt

changes in water composition, including reduced salinity and oxygen levels, which can distress marine organisms. The sudden introduction of freshwaterandsedimentscancreate hypoxic conditions, areas with decreased oxygen levels, in coastal waters. Marine species suchasoctopuses, lobsters, and various fish may become disoriented or suffocate, leadingthemtowashashore.

When the Swakop River flows into the ocean, it introduces a significant amount of freshwater, sediments, and nutrients into the marine environment.

This sudden influx can lead to several ecological phenomenaaffectingmarine life. Hypoxia (Low Oxygen Levels) - The decompositionoforganic mattercarriedbytheriver consumesoxygen, potentiallyleadingtohypoxic

conditions Such environments can cause stress or mortality among marine organisms. Stratification - The layering of freshwater over denser seawater can prevent oxygen from mixing throughout the water column, exacerbatinghypoxia.NutrientLoading and Eutrophication - Elevatednutrientlevelsfromriver discharge can stimulate algal blooms. The subsequent decay of these blooms further depletes oxygen, impacting marinespecies.
