Grand entrance taking shape The Swakopmund branch of Metro Cash & Carry was destroyed by a fire early on Monday. An adacent business, Klimas Glass, was also affected when a garage on the premises caught fire. The fire broke out between 03:00 and 04:00. The Swakopmund Fire Brigade fought for three hours to bring the fire under control. Swakopmund's fire chief Adri Goosen said yesterday an investigation into the cause of the fire will start today. Late yesterday the fire brigade was still at the scene to extinguish “hot spots where the smouldering ruins

again flared up to flames. It was clear yesterday that the remains of the building where Metro has been conducting business for many years has to be demolished, as the damage is simply too big. The fire yesterday morning brought back

the memories of a similar fire last year which gutted the Dolphin Pharmacy in Swakopmund's central business district. It also reminds citizens of the old saying; fire is a patient servant, but a fearful master and that every caution should be taken to reduce fire risk.

Build Together takes tough stance on poor performers Beneficiaries of the Build Together Scheme at Swakopmund who are dragging feet in completing construction of their low-cost houses, are given twelve months to being complete construction. Those who do not comply risk their incomplete houses repossessed by the Swakopmund local authority and redistributed to the next batch of people qualifying for the Build Together Scheme. This decision was made public by the Swakopmund Town Council on Wednesday. The Department of Community Development Services will be meeting with current beneficiaries on the issue in the foreseeable future.

People who risk losing their houses if they fail this twelve months deadline are those who are employed. The argument is there is a n u rg e n t n e e d f o r affordable housing and when a person is employed he can do more

to complete his/her house. Unemployed people whose homes are also incomplete fall under the same risk group, but alternative ways will be found to accommodate these people to complete their houses, it was said.
