Can Walvis Bay post office explain why there was no mail in the boxes for fourteen days? Cassinga Day:

Locker vom Hocker See Report on page 2

Liquor sales on Monday is not public holiday a public holiday Namibia commemorates Cassinga Day tomorrow, 4 May 2019, as a public holiday. Cassinga Day is in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the Angolan town of Cassinga when on 4 May 1978 South African forces attacked the town leading to the loss of several hundred lives. The South Africans charged Cassinga was a base for combatants of Swapo’s People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) and the opposite argument is that Cassinga was a refugee camp and the 4 May 1978 attacks led mainly to the loss of lives of children and women. As Cassinga Day falls on a Saturday, Monday 6 May would be a normal work day. It is only when a public holiday falls on a Sunday, than the next day is then regarded as a public holiday.

Public frustration is growing with the operating hours of two night clubs situated in Walvis Bay’s 6th Street, and also similar frustrations by residents in Kuisebmond over shebeen owners not operating within the hours provided for in the Liquor Act. With Cassinga Day regarded a public holiday, liquor outlet owners and operators are cautioned that the following is applicable: On Cassinga Day, all holders of liquor store and retail liquor licenses are not allowed to sell liquor. Holders of special liquor licenses including shebeens and clubs, as well as all other special license holders, are only allowed to operate from 10:00 till midnight on Saturday. Night club and club operators in particular are reminded liquor can only be sold to patrons when consumption takes place on such premises. The selling of liquor per unsealed bottle, pack or case is not permitted.
