NHE houses falling apart Isaac Chikosi A single mother of Kuisebmond in Walvis Bay fears for her and her children's lives, as their NHE low cost house is literally falling apart and could collapse any time soon.

What started as a small crack escalated into a gigantic gap where you can see through the wall and even the ceiling is tearing apart under structural stress.

This is one example of many.

All three players are former Kudus Rugby Club players with well established roots in the harbour town.

These three deserve a standing ovation when on Saturday Namibia plays the Southern Kings in a final preparation game for the World Cup. They play the match on the stadium of Walvis Bay Private High School.

What is this?

An employee of the municipality of Walvis Bay stopped in Union Street over the weekend to take a leak right there in public. He was driving with an official vehicle of the municipality at the time and the person who saw him says the man was also driving at high speed. The vehicle’s registration mark is N19510WB and the municipal number on the door is N355. It is also interesting to note a passenger in the vehicle - is that a colleague also working for the municipality?

The Namibian Police reported over the weekend its Operation Kalahari is yielding positive results.

During joint operations over the weekend throughout the region with members of the Police, Namibian Defence Force, Correctional Services, Municipal Traffic and Community policing members, ten Okapi knives were seized, one firearm was confiscated, and two people were charged with possession of drugs.

Several spot searches were conducted on persons and vehicles as well as at ad hoc roadblocks. Social order was maintained, resulting in a calmer month-end weekend.

According to the acting Regional Crimes Investigations Coordinator Ileni Shapumba, 10 people were charged with violating road rules with some liquor outlets being issued warnings for excessive noise levels. One person was reportedly stabbed with an unknown object in Mondesa at a local shebeen and another stabbed with a knife in Narraville during a domestic dispute. Alcohol related crimes remain a major concern in Mondesa and Kuisebmond.

Police warn individuals who buy second hand goods to verify the ownership of such goods so as not to perpetrate crime by purchasing stolen goods. “We express our thanks to the local public for the general conduct – indeed we are achieving social order”, said Shapumba.

Continued from page 1 There is grave concerns over the deteriorating state of fairly recently built National Housing Enterprise (NHE) houses under the Mass Housing Scheme in Walvis Bay's Kuisebmond area. House owners in Bathfish Street contacted the Namib Times after their complaints to the relevant authority fell on deaf ears.

The two-bedroom houses were built by a South African contractor. The houses are of a sub-standard quality and are cracking and could soon fall apart. Cracks from the floors all the way to the ceiling are evident, leaving little doubt that these problems are starting at these homes' very foundations.

Anemarie, a single mother who lives on erf 6964, showed the Namib Times the huge cracks on the kitchen and bedroom wall of her house.

“This wall keeps moving”, she explained, Referring to the bedroom wall.

“The cracks are getting bigger every day. One day my house will just fall apart.”

Anastasia Tsowases, the owner of erf 6934 in the same street, says she was tired of complaining and decided to fix some of the cracks herself. To no avail, as the cracks keep returning and it actually worsens. Tsowases confirmed she contacted the NHE office in Walvis Bay to complain about the growing cracks and was informed that the problem may be with the foundation.

According to her, no work could be done on the foundation as a scrapped vehicle in the yard would need to be removed first. Although an apparently simple feat, the deregistered vehicle supported by bricks is not easy to move for the single mother.

A little stretch further down on erf 6937, Theresia Gaoses said she was unhappy with the quality of her house. Besides gaping cracks that have compromised the stability of her doors and windows, there is an issue with the plumbing. Damp marks on the kitchen- and bathroom walls show evidence of leakage.

The damp walls are of great concern to Gaoses who lives with her 17-yearold son who struggles with sinusitis. Gaoses believes the cracks and damp walls are just the tip of the iceberg of her problems. Adding, a while back a team from the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development visited her house to inspect it after her complains. That was allegedly the last she heard from them.

Residents living on erf 6940 said the cracks resulted in the kitchen win-dow falling out. “One day I heard a loud sound and when I ran to the door I noticed it was the wall that cracked wide open”. The window was gone. She is left rattled, specifically over the safety of her household. ”What then is to become of these house owners whose hard-earned investments are sinking into the ground before their very eyes? The contractor is yet to respond to questions by the Namib Times.

Did someone mentioned Spring?

Although large parts of the interior is currently bathing in warm temperatures, the weather is not yet ready to play the Spring game at the coast. On Sunday, despite pleasant weather the winter fog was at a tug-of-war with the sunny weather for the greatest part of the day.

Yesterday (2 September) the coast was covered in a fog blanket as seen here from the Walvis Bay Waterfront. The sun did stick out its neck towards 15:00 but the weather remained unpredictable at its best.

A reflection of Swakopmund by a former resident (now living in the U.S.) Perhaps the most reliable reflection one can have is that from an outsider who has a bird’s eye view. Recently a former resident of Swakopmund visited from the United States of America and in what follows his reflection from the holiday town which serves both as compliment, but also reflects what still has to be done. In what follows what Mr. Boris Erlank had to say (he was also a regular contributor to Namib Times in earlier years): “We recently traveled from California to celebrate my mother's 90th birthday in Swakopmund.

Family converged from Germany, Cape Town, and elsewhere for this occasion.

There was much talk with local friends about the “good old days” and the inevitable lamenting about things not being quite the way they used to.

I will concede that it's embarrassing to have the flags in front of the police station in tatters; it is unpleasant to have people begging whereever you go; and north of the town centre Swakopmund sports its fair share of architectural missteps. It is also noticeable that the Department of Education is allowing buildings in prime locations to decay into eyesores. The saddest thing is to see decades old palm trees dying in the school grounds be-

cause nobody can be bothered to water them. If one cannot trust the department to nurture a few trees, how can one trust them to nurture the children of the nation?

But many things are as good as ever – the bread at the Hansa Bäckerei, Hartlief sausage, cake at Café Anton, and Kabeljou at The Tug. What really impressed us though are the things that are getting better, and that form a foundation for competing in the global tourism market. Swakopmund has a great service culture and a visible commitment to ecofriendly, sustainable living. The centre of town is becoming ever prettier and more interesting with redevelopments like Bonus Mark and quaint hidden courtyards to explore. This is so much more interesting than your average American town with a bland strip malls.

Our toughest decision every morning was

where to have breakfast. We experienced great coffee, and uniformly friendly service, at Bojo's, Slowtown, Cordes House, Krisjans, and others.

The medical facilities at the Cottage Hospital are spotless and Swakopmund is blessed with a disproportionate concentration of dedicated doctors, dentists and medical staff.

It's the personal touch that sets the town apart – the waitress who greets you like a friend on the third day here; the young guys at Supatronix who helped us with the complexity of topping up data for internet; the barmen at the Hansa putting on a show to flambé Colonial Coffee, or the friendly people at Riccis who made blinds for our apartment – they all exude a genuine care and willingness to help. Our favorite new addition is the Strand Hotel; a perfect sundowner setting in any weather.

The service is out-

standing. When the manager saw us struggle to squeeze luggage into Mum's old Atos, he offered to help us out with his personal “bakkie”. You don't get that at a Marriott or Hyatt Hotel.

In terms of sustainability the Municipality of Swakopmund must be commended for employing a small army of people to sweep the roads, and to maintain the gardens from the Jetty all the way out to Vineta.

Swakopmund can show the world, and especially America, a thing or two about sustainability. The town has recycled water for decades, it is bicycle friendly, solar panels are becoming more prominent, and in California we certainly don't have the facility to cut down on plastic by re-filling water

bottles at the supermarket.

At Peter's Antiques purchases are placed in bags made from old newspapers and, at the monthly craft market, we could buy home made everything from rusks to hand-sewn shopping bags and beautiful decorations made of succulents and drift wood. (Pity those can't be shipped.)

My hope and prayer for Swakopmund is threefold: a) that the people of this town don't become complacent about tourism.

It's a fickle business and you are competing for Euros and Dollars with everyone from Bali and Croatia to Alaska and Mexico.

Those people aren't standing still and keep building on their unique advantages to improve their service

offerings. b) that Namibia Telecom will do something to make telecoms better and cheaper.

Namibia has just about the most expensive telecoms in the world.

This isolates the country and is an obstacle to everything from banking to booking a hotel room. c) most importantly, that the Department of Education will get off its butt and provide the young people of this country with an education that allows them to compete in the global, digital economy. If people in India and the Philippines can provide computer services for Europe and America, why shouldn't Namibians do the same? With the right education Swakopmunders definitely can do more than be carguards or street swee-

pers.

I look forward to the day when one can enjoy all that Swakopmund has to offer, and work remotely for a digital start-up in Johannesburg, California, London, or Frankfurt – that would really be the best of all worlds!

The big clear-up has started at CHEC What goes up must come down. This not only confined to the principle of gravity, but also in the event of large deployments such as that of China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) which constructed the container terminal on reclaimed land in the port of Walvis Bay. Construction lasted just over five years.

The company occupied a large part of the southern end of the port of Walvis Bay since 2013 where construction materials, machinery and plant were applied 24-hours a day for seven days of the week to complete the 40 hectares container terminal.

And now that the terminal has been completed, CHEC has to pack up and rehabilitate the area to the same as pre-occupation. One of the biggest jobs lying ahead is the dismantling of the batching plant where concrete was mixed from cement and aggregate (sand and stone) for construction. The Also a large shed and countless smaller items in the form of spent vehicles, cranes, pipes and all other equipment related to the project.

A very impressive wooden structure is taking shape at the Walvis Bay Waterfront under the watchful eye of a master in his field, Mr Kallie van Wyk (pictured). Mr van Wyk over many decades made a name for himself in the local carpentry industry, more specifically shipwright.

He now lives in South Africa and now take some time in Walvis Bay to supervise this impressive wooden office building for Sunsail Catamarans in the Walvis Bay Waterfront on behalf of the Rock Group

Workers began setting up the stage last week with the biggest night in Namibian music just days away. This year the 9th edition of the NAMAs will be hosted at the Dome in Swakopmund on Saturday 7 September. The stage is expected to be completed by today (Tuesday).

“This year we are going big. We are always about raising the bar”, said Fikameni Mathias, MTC's corporate communications practitioner. The audience can expect spectacular stunts and other surprises on the night. A total of 36 performing artists will grace the stage. Performances will be accompanied by a live band.

Music experts, judges, artists and nominees will meet Saturday morning for a masterclass to discuss how to handle the pressures of the music industry. Household names such as South African legendary artist Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Namibia's own Axali Doeseb will also speak to

nominees about life after winning.

“Looking at the nominees, it is clear to see the industry is growing. You have these upcoming artists who are just as good as the big names in music.”

Mathias emphasised how important it is for the artists to see their fans and feel their support urging all music lovers to join the celebration and recognition of talent. The theme is “Glitz and Glamour/ urban chic”.

Dr Stander said one must remember the acronym FAST: F - Does one side of the face droop? Ask the person to smile. Is the person's smile uneven or lopsided? A - Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? S - Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. T - Time to act. If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms are temporary, call ER24 to get them to a hospital immediately.

She further said a crucial factor is prevention. “High blood pressure, high blood cholesterol levels, lack of regular exercise – these are all lifestyle factors that could eventually lead to a stroke,” explains Dr. Stander.

This September, Mediclinic is inviting everyone to take advantage of free blood pressure and cholesterol tests at one of their participating hospitals and to share the message on maintaining a healthy heart with friends and family.

Coastal Sages “chip – In” For Cancer The Coastal Sages Branch held their Monthly Competition on Sunday 18 August at Rossmund.

Rossmund Golf Club used the opportunity to hand over an amount of N$12 000 that was collected during 2018, to the Swakopmund Oncology Center - to be used for the benefit of the coastal community as a whole.

This is the second year that the Sages have managed to make a difference for local cancer patients at the coast. Sister Lucinda Visser attended the handover ceremony on behalf of the Swakopmund Oncology Center, thanking all the Sages for their generosity.

Achmet Abrahams – Chairman of the Coastal Sages in turn thanked her for their hard work in making a difference at the coast.

Coastal Welwitschias emerge on top Rudi Bowe The Coastal Welwitschia XI emerged as the winning team for the second year running in the Cricket Namibia Under-19 national schools week sponsored by Africa Personnel Services (APS).

Six schools teams that competed in the tournament were: the Coastal Welwitschias, Pro-Ed Academy, Windhoek Gymnasium, Windhoek Afrikaans Private, Windhoek High School, School, and an APS Invitational side made up of players from various other schools.

The Welwitschias, who did not lost a game throughout the tournament, happily beat Windhoek Gymnasium with by eight wickets two overs to spare.

Opening batsman Dian Neethling scored an unbeaten 78 runs off only 53 balls (7x4 2x6). Neethling and Scott Winborn (28 off 27 balls) built a partnership of 65 before Winborn was caught out.

Gold for Olivier and Fouche Rudi Bowe at African States Namibia's Men's Lawn Bowls Pairs team, comprising Cabous Olivier (20) and JP Fouche (17), recently caused a big upset when they beat South Africa in the final of the African States Tournament, to win gold.

The African States Tournament (AST) took place every second year and this year it was held in Nairobi, Kenya with six competing nations, namely the hosts Kenya and Botswana, Namibia, South

Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The two Namibian youngsters, Cabous Olivier and JP Fouche played Pairs, while Johan Jacobs, Ewald Vermeulen and Poena Olivier played the Triples. Both teams had a

very good first day, with both teams winning their games.

Olivier and JP Fouche beat Zambia 24-14, while the Trips men beat also beat Zambia 24-12.

In the afternoon session, Olivier and Fouche beat Kenya 16-13, while the

Trips team narrowly beat Kenya 15-14.

The second day went well again for the Pairs as they drew against Zimbabwe 17-all and beat Botswana 18-14.

However, things did not went too well for the Trips trio as they lost 1221 to Zimbabwe and by

one shot against Botswana 16-17.

In the final round, Namibia came up against the favourites, South Africa.

The trips lost 12-25 while the Pairs team had a resounding win as they beat South Africa 26-13 to walk away with the

gold medal in the Men's Pairs section.

Cabous Olivier played in the Men's Singles section where he defeated defeat South Africa 21-7lost Zimbabwe 17-21,defeat Botswana 21-17 and defeat Zambia 21-4. In the last game he lost to Kenya to end second in the singles

section.

In the Men's Fours section Namibian team that consist of JP Fouche, Johan Jacobs, Ewald Vermeulen and Poena Olivier lost against South Africa 12-22,Zimbabwe 1220, lost Botswana 1321, Zimbabwe 12-20 and Zambia 21-19.

Le Tour delivers top notch cycling The Marathon Sugar Tour de Narraville 2019 once again succeeded to deliver top notch cycling adventure in the Narraville neighbourhood.

About 200 athletes registered for the 10 km running and the 10km, 25km, 65km and 70km cycling distances in the this year's tough competition.

The architect of Le Tour de Narraville Danny Beukes said “A lot has changed and improved since the first event in 2013, making this event one to be reckoned with.

Some of the significant changes include a 70 km night ride that was held on Friday night before the main event. Time of the racers was taken for the first at the Tour de Narraville to give athletes an indication of how well they did. Recognition was given to

the fastest riders with custom made trophies.

A complete paperless entry system was introduced by Boza Technologies.

On the day West Coast FM broad cast live from the venue. The 65 km route included a short, yet tough, single track.

Friday night, riders were really challenged the first half of the route, and only the brave showed up but all the riders finished.

Saturday saw great cycling but was not an easy ride for the athletes, especially the one's that took up Friday night race as well.

Nathan Snyders was the youngest cyclist on the 65km route, and at the tender age of 11, he cycled every single one

of those km's. This was the youngest person to ever have completed an officially timed race of such a distance. Lenay Du Plessis finished ahead of all riders, including the men, on the 25 km route. At the young age of 15, this is quite an achievement.

A great vibe could be felt throughout the event, on both night and day races.

Asked what he thinks was the recipe for the success of the 2019 Le Tour de Narraville, Beukes said: “It was a team effort, everyone pulled their weight” and that “it was only possible through the generosity of the sponsors” for the Tour, of which some were approached at the last minute…and they were not disappointed.

Athletes from the coastal towns were very excited about the tour, and the athletes coming from as far as Windhoek and Otjiwarongo as well as Karibib and Henties Bay to take part in this event. Everyone that was interviewed expressed their excitement about next year's event.

FNB Endurance a great success for Namibia The recent Africa Endurance Championship, the largest and most important FEI competition on the calendar of NERA (Namibian Endurance Riding Association), has again been a huge success with about 130 endurance riders competing this past week in Walvis Bay. All of the horses’ condition and fitness was in top

shape and the panel of 12 veterinarians overall was very pleased with the horses and the ride.

The pass rate of 72% who completed their distances is excellent considering that this route is described as one

of the toughest in the endurance world.

Extreme weather conditions in the desert and along the sea, as well as the terrain which includes some of the highest dunes in the world, require a great deal of technical skill and planning and place high demands on riders' fitness.

Namibia's endurance race can boast that it competes against South Africa every year and never returns emptyhanded. This year, Namibia won three of the four team competitions, by winning the standard, lightweight and junior categories.

Always a highlight of the awards ceremony are the

awards for the best prepared horses, which are selected by a panel of veterinarians according to certain criteria.

In the young rider section, Maya's best-prepared horse prize was won by Atashi Sky. The lightweight winner was Justus Afrikaner with Wiejandie Lafras, the heavyweight class was Pierre de Wit with Aracos Nabil, and standard weight was Melisa Boehme (RSA) with Kalharabi Janie (owner George Wessels).

Between these four, Melisa Boehme also won the coveted title as "best of the best prepared horses".
