On 26 September, Namibia joined the rest of the maritime world in celebrating World Maritime Day, which is an initiative of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) – a specialised agency of the United Nations (UN). This Day is celebrated annually during the last Thursday in September. An official UN day, World Maritime Day provides an opportunity to focus attention on the importance of maritime transport and other activities in the maritime domain and to highlight a particular aspect of IMO's work. The theme for this year is 'Empowering Women in the Maritime Community' and its objective is to raise awareness on the importance of gender equality, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and to highlight the important contribution of women all over the world to the maritime domain. Maritime domain refers to the ocean space and everything related to it including activities such as maritime transport and ports, fisheries, marine mining and energy, marine and coastal tourism, information and communications technology, marine bio-prospecting as well as education and training, conservation and naval defense. Planned national activities to celebrate this important day in Namibia for the 1st time ever, have been scrapped. This is rather unfortunate considering that Namibia seeks to leverage the enormous potential of the maritime domain to

SFC won Swakopmund traffic dept. Fistball boasts new response cars B league The Swakopmund Municipal Traffic department received 8 brand new Volkswagen GTi's yesterday (Thursday). The cars were handed over by AutoHaus Swakopmund at the municipality building. According to council's spokesperson Aili Gerbhart, the new vehicles will augment the current fleet and assist traffic officers to respond timeously. A short training course is underway to familiarise the officers with the operation of their new vehicles.
