Swakopmund to get rickshaws Erwin Leuschner Swakopmund might soon get an exciting, new tourism activity to add to the already large array of attractions being offered in town: Tours on a rickshaw. Town Council approved an application by resident Corne du Plessis during its last meeting, who wishes to offer these tours in the town centre and the surrounding areas. The submission by Corne du Plessis was made in February this year. In a letter addressed to the CEO of the Swakopmund municipality he motivates his idea. Rickshaw type vehicles were once common worldwide, but eventually have been replaced by automobiles and other forms of self-propelled transport. “The rickshaw typically has three wheels and (can) be described as a bicycle or tricycle designed for propulsion solely by

means of human power to ferry people on a public road,” it states in the Agenda of the meeting. In his application du Plessis requests Council to operate rickshaw tours in areas such as the aquarium, jetty, museum and naturally the historical buildings that Swakopmund is blessed with. “These (tours) would range from one hour to a half day and full day to allow a variety of different packages to suit all budgets for locals as well as foreign tourists,” he

argues. It is his intention to ideally employ only females, as they are a minority and are often overlooked when it comes to employment opportunities. “The women would be trained and be required to pass a basic exam on the history of Swakopmund buildings and areas of attractions,” he states in his application. The rickshaws themselves he intends to import from Asia. “We would work closely with the Swakopmund traffic depart-
